I just watched one of the film's on the list of 'Ebert's Greats,' The Terrorist (2000), but wish I hadn't.

It's a pretty lame directorial effort from seasoned Indian cinematographer Santosh Sivan about a 19-year old girl, Malli, on a suicide mission somewhere in Tamil-speaking South Asia. It could be South India; it could be Sri Lanka.

Very early it's clear that the only thing that will maintain the dramatic tension for the running time of 95 minutes is some twist that will make this highly trained and committed girl question her mission. To achieve this, Sivan, who also wrote the script, turns the plot in a ridiculous direction that ruined the film for me.

When Malli arrives from the jungle in the town/city where she is to carry out the suicide bombing, her comrades take her to stay in the home of Vasu, a verbose, inquisitive yet poetic man. Staying with Vasu and his tiny family stirs up in Malli an interest in the wonders and possibilities of life that her militant existence has hitherto denied her. Eventually, Vasu informs Malli that she is pregnant, a fact that had escaped her. So here we have:

Ridiculous point 1: Through flashbacks we realize that the father of Malli's unborn child is a wounded comrade she met lying on the field of battle. She comforted him and, instead of trying to get him to safety, apparently had sex with him. He was promptly discovered by government troops, beaten, and bit into his cyanide capsule to dispose of himself.

Ridiculous point 2: In any realistic scenario, Malli's comrades - who clearly have a sophisticated network - would take her to a safe house for the few days until her mission. This is a girl who has been indoctrinated all her life in the importance of the cause. It is nonsense to believe that, in the run-up to perhaps the movement's most important mission ever, they would take her to a stranger's house. In addition to the nosy Vasu, two dodgy men visiting Malli every day to iron out the details of the suicide bombing runs a much greater risk of being exposed than holing her up in one of their own houses.

This nonsense blows a far bigger hole through Sivan's movie than any bomb could.

The movie's strong points are its often aesthetically pleasing cinematography, all filmed in natural light. Ayesha Dharker is well-cast as Malli, but Sivan overdoes the long, searching close-ups of her beautiful face and haunted eyes.

There are poignant reminders in several scenes that, although these girls and boys are well-versed in death and killing, they are hopelessly naive about many other aspects of life.

These points, however, are far outweighed by the film's many irredeemable weaknesses: ridiculous plot points; the unnecessary use of slow-motion sequences and an oppressively heavy-handed soundtrack that set a nauseatingly melodramatic tone; and highly amateurish overdubbing.

Sivan should stick to cinematography. Maybe he'd be ok as a director with someone else's script, but clearly not his own.

Although the film is obviously geared towards having Malli choose life over death, I have to admit that half-way through I was wishing that she'd just get the horrific deed over with to spare everyone concerned - namely myself - further agony.

After finishing the movie I read Roger Ebert's review and can't disagree with him more. He seems to have misread some plot points and either overlooked, forgiven or succumbed to all sorts of mediocre, or simply poor, film-making (except for much of the cinematography).

I'd be interested in what other MoFo members think of the movie, but I can't recommend that anyone else watch it.

4.5/10

I also posted this in the Roger Ebert's Great Movies thread to warn anyone who might be seduced into viewing this film by Ebert's list like I was.

So I finally watched this movie. I will admit I remember seeing the trailer for this movie and it looked confusing and extremely boring. OH BOY was I wrong! The trailers did not do this movie any justice. I thought the dream like sequences within Jim Carry's mind were very good and very cool to look at. I liked how they showed that a relationship is hard work, and that with on you get the good as well as the bad. And while the bad hurts like hell, the good is stuff you really really want to hold onto.

Psycho: Didn't hold up as well as the first time I watched it. Knowing everything that will happen makes it a much less entertaining film, given it depends on plot twists. Still I think it deserves a 4_5.

The Big Lebowski: It had been a few years since I last saw it. Still holds up very well. In fact, it might be among the best movies out of the 12 movies in the MoFo Hall of Fame list. Deserves a 4_5+ or maybe even a full rating.

Bloodsport

I am a sucker for Van Damme movies, only in the 80's and 90's though. Well what can I say the acting is pretty bad, it is basically a movie full of cheese but at the same time it is pretty enjoyable to watch. Van Damme basically shows off his martial arts abilities while trying to act out a scene.

Finally watched this classic. Why do some people say this movie is too slow, or boring? I wish it lasted 2 hours more. I really, really liked what I saw, a truly awe-inspiring film. But I cannot give a definite rating right now, because I feel this film is too complex, and I should wait for it to sink in.

I initally thought Bowman was going insane when he encountered HAL (it started to seem like a psychological thriller at that point), but then I realized it's far more complex than that. The ending totally blew me away.

"The Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia". A documentary that follows infamous White family of West Virginia. I'm already a cynical misanthrope, so I probably shouldn't have watched this movie. It's fascinating how much of a toll cigarettes, drugs, and alcohol can take on the human body. The male members of the white family look like the standard product of trailer park inbreeding, but the women are a sight to behold. I guess you can only smoke so many cigarettes, so much pot, and snort so many prescription drugs before a woman's voice deteriorates and sounds like some sort of cave beast. After watching this film I support abortion, forced euthanasia, and eugenics.

Prometheus

First thoughts after viewing last night:

It seemed a bit disjointed to me; I'm a big fan of the first 2 Alien movies -- maybe they cowtowed excessively to the fans with the surgery scene and the invasive creepy monsters and David the robot's fate. But we all expect that, right? Not a big fan of the albino aliens and their lofty shenanigans though.

Loved the spaceship and all the tech stuff. The sets are fantastic, as usual. I though David was an interesting character.
Charlize in black and all uptight was nice too ;)

Gotta give it a second watch though....

It's been a little while now, but I watched Grizzly man last Sunday.

I didn't have too much hope put in this because Herzog is a director I tend to deal with disbelief after being utterly disappointed with his acclaimed masterpiece Aguirre, the wrath of God and not that big into Fitzcarraldo.

It surprised me, though. Maybe I am going to be more into the documentarist Herzog than the storyteller Herzog, after all. The editing of the found footage reveals how careful this director is at his work.

On the content, it is obvious to me that this documentary deals with a very eccentric character who feels outside of his reality; it becomes clearer as the footage develops and his narcissistic and nonsensical bursts get more and more frequent. I don't really believe that Timothy's choice is really a solution, rather it becomes an added problem as it unfocuses the question, claiming that he understands the bears by judging them as humans and building an alternative fairytale story around it, which at points turns just ridiculous (when he reacts dramatically towards natural predation).

However, the perspective put by Herzog makes me feel a little bit of admiration around this figure at the same time it looks nasty and annoying; not because of his defense because the director is very high voiced against the methods and ideals of his portrayed character. But because being able to live according to a philosophy of choice, and defining himself and his objectives in such a clear way, is something I can't help but find inspiring in Timothy. He probably didn't achieve anything, and maybe even became a burden for the ecologist movement, but still, there's a point of respect in the narration as Herzog portrays the way he seems to enjoy and find a meaning to his life through this path. And it is very effectively transmitted.

Sorry, but this was my second time watching it and i liked it even less.

this movie suffers from what I call "road runner syndrome" whereby seeing the coyote fall off a cliff and survive unharmed, all suspense is immediately drained out of any future calamities.

there was never any sense of danger. I don't know what it was, maybe this was meant for kids? the whole movie felt like it had giant novelty boxing gloves on. We were told about how scary and dangerous the place was but I was never shown. even when no face, who we're told is some demon starts eating people the girl somehow surmises "oh it must be the bathhouse making him crazy" instead of the fact that he might just be a demon? but of course she is correct, because this movie has no sense of danger. and yay he is friendly the whole time just like everyone else once you get past their rough edges. ugh.

the friend I was watching this with got up and left when there was only 10 minutes left. i guess he couldn't stand all the nonsense anymore because he kept trying to look for some sort of allegory.

jal90
04-24-13, 04:51 AM
Well, it was meant for kids after all (said by Miyazaki).

But I don't think the question lies in there. No Face may be a lot of things, I didn't reach a fully satisfying answer after many viewings, but what I'm sure about is that he is not a demon, and even if it was, that wouldn't make a "demon" as the Western audience defines it. More like an empty shell, a wandering being searching for an identity. There is also the fact that he establishes a brief relationship with Chihiro before; even in the case he was actually badly-intentioned, Chihiro would have defended his case.

On the feelings of danger, I guess they might come from very specific moments because overall Spirited away is not a tense movie, but a very calmed one; once the craziness of the beginning is set, Chihiro is supposed to have grown during her stay and be able to control her emotions, understand how thinks work in the world (the fantasy setting is, paradoxically, an allegory to make her understand how the real world is), and set priorities. The danger here is more of an underlying one. How did those people get there, where they human and their aspect gradually changed as they forgot their names and real life identities? What about the little girls that are seen cleaning the floor with Chihiro? Did Kamaji renounce to his last chance? Is Lin a lost case? Just by the fact that Chihiro is able to escape, we see what could have happened with her through the amount of characters that don't make it.

I usually don't try to watch movies that didn't impress me on first viewing. Maybe you tried to watch it again because people keep praising it.

The first time I watched Spirited Away it became my favorite movie of all time instantly. That's why I watched it again later. Still, over the 23 months since I first watched Spirited Away, I have watched it only 4 times. I wait until I forget some of the movie to not reduce the dramatic impact.

this movie suffers from what I call "road runner syndrome" whereby seeing the coyote fall off a cliff and survive unharmed, all suspense is immediately drained out of any future calamities.

there was never any sense of danger. I don't know what it was, maybe this was meant for kids?

Miyazaki said that the target audience of the movie were 10 year old girls, at the brink of adolescence. However that didn't prevent it from being considered one of the top movies of the decade. Miyazaki said that movies for children that are actually good are also good for adults but the inverse is not true (i.e. Once Upon a Time in America is good for adults but not very good for children).

The target audience of My Neighbor Totoro was 5 year olds, but I consider that it is possibly the greatest work of art of the 20th century.

the whole movie felt like it had giant novelty boxing gloves on. We were told about how scary and dangerous the place was but I was never shown.

Well, you have to fill in some of the movie with your own mind. Spirited Away send shivers down my spine every time I watch it while others said that they didn't understand anything.

I found 2001: A Space Odyssey to be terrifying while others found it to be a bore.

even when no face, who we're told is some demon starts eating people the girl somehow surmises "oh it must be the bathhouse making him crazy" instead of the fact that he might just be a demon? but of course she is correct, because this movie has no sense of danger. and yay he is friendly the whole time just like everyone else once you get past their rough edges. ugh.

The traditional Hollywood formula of protagonist versus antagonist is not used in Miyazaki's films, specially in this one. If you try to watch his movies using the traditional Hollywood glasses you will not understand Spirited Away or most of his other movies.

There a few exceptions in his filmography though.

the friend I was watching this with got up and left when there was only 10 minutes left. i guess he couldn't stand all the nonsense anymore because he kept trying to look for some sort of allegory.

I think that the problem lies in that you have build up expectations about it. Spirited Away is not a conventional Hollywood movie. Don't try to engage with it like a conventional Hollywood movie.

Spirited Away is a 125 minute symphony of sound and color. I found it terrifying at parts and extremely moving at other parts. However, it is Miyazaki's least rational film and one of his most complex works. It is more of an art film than any of his other movies.

I think that Castle in the Sky might be a much better Miyazaki film for you. It has antagonists, it has a well define story structure and it is very much like conventional Hollywood adventure movies, just much better.

Indeed. The non-melodic music used with the monoliths is also a contributing factor for that effect. They represent the unknown and as we known, man's greatest fear is the unknown.

there was never any sense of danger.

I find it surprising that, as I interpret what you say, you didn't enjoy the movie because you were expecting danger and suspense, more or less, and there was none. I never thought it was scary or meant to be so, maybe a little creepy and unsettling for the young girl, but I never even conceived that as being a main point of the movie until you mentioned your disappointment in that aspect. Maybe this is why you didn't enjoy it at all??? Just found it interesting to hear that point of view/opinion.

spirited away.. 2/5 haha I know that is going to irk some people.
Sorry, but this was my second time watching it and i liked it even less.

this movie suffers from what I call "road runner syndrome" whereby seeing the coyote fall off a cliff and survive unharmed, all suspense is immediately drained out of any future calamities.

Isn't that always the case when you watch a movie for the second time? So every movie is weak the second time you watch it because all the 'danger' is gone?

I don't agree with your explanation at all, honestly.

****SPOILER ALERT BELOW****
Sort of.

I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. It had two things I am not a big fan of - Sci Fi and Tom Cruise. The reason I am not a big fan of Sci Fi is also probably the reason I didn't rate it higher, that and the fact that I thought it was ending about 6 times and it wasn't, it just kept on going (which was fine at first, but then I just got annoyed). But let me explain about the Sci Fi aspect and why it affects my opinion...

I like a lot of science fiction movies, I do. But they tend to bother me because I am a very logical and realistic person, especially when it comes to movies, and I feel that science fiction tends to make up things to make sense of the plot. Granted, these science-fiction-facts may be possible in some way with the right about of bullcaca theoretical evidence that is based on known fact, even if it's only a single statement/idea that is taken out of context.

So one of the main reasons I couldn't enjoy this movie to its full extent (besides Tom Cruise, even though he rarely bothered me during this film) is because I had to keep asking questions, and even when I got the answers, it didn't make sense to me, and I couldn't fully follow the movie. But, this happens with me and sci-fi.

Regardless, it was a great movie. Would've got 8.5 if it weren't for these extenuating circumstances.

Poultrygeist is one of the more recent Troma movies released that has been directed by Lloyd Kaufman, the same man behind The Toxic Avenger. The movie is another campy horror movie with lots of practical effects. Only this time the movie does not deal with hideously deformed creatures of super human size and strength, it deals with zombie chickens! The food at a local KFC parody becomes infected after being constructed on the Tromahawk Indian burial ground in the lovely town of Tromaville New Jersey. And the native spirits seek revenge by possessing all who eat the infected chicken meat and turning them into undead chicken zombies! It is really campy, funny, gory, silly and just plain fun. Lots of practical gore effects, plenty of nudity, and more then enough crude humor for any fan who can stomach such things. If you like weird, I think you will like this movie.

^I couldn't get through that one. I blind bought it because the title and the premise were so ridiculous that it sounded awesome, but it just struck me as stupid. Also, it's a musical which is a huge strike in my book.

There are only really three musical numbers in it. All in the beginning. After the zombie chickens attack there are not any songs.

My first meeting with Mr Tsai. It's apocalyptic erotic and existential musical comedy-drama about watermelons.

Prudent rating:
3.5

Now I have to see his other films.

^ The only Tsai film that I truly hated. Catchy musical sequences aside, the rest is porn. The ending is laughably atrocious.

I'm not really fond of it either. I think it mistakes quirkiness with plain ridiculousness.

Still looking forward to the rest of his filmography, but...

It's not porn. It has some erotic elements, though. It's sometimes referred to as the worst Tsai film. If that's true I can't wait to see more!

Pretty sure it's my favorite. I've never seen such an outlandish expression of connection/lack thereof before, it was really, really interesting, and not in a "one-watch-only" way.

I watched the Director's Cut, and I will say first and foremost this movie is LONG. I'm pretty exaughsted, actually, after watching it, so I'm just going to say pros and cons.

The win for best editing was appropriate, very well done. The directing, photography, and editing all together were really well done. The acting was impeccable, absolutely awesome. The guys mustache when they go to the restaurant near the beginning, definitely a point plus. The evolution of the story was good. And of course the main theme and idea of the movie was fantastic.

The length was too much for the content and lack of stimulation. Maybe this is just true for the Director's Cut, I don't know. By the time the ending speech/closing argument was being said, I felt like I should be heart-wrenched, but I just wasn't because I was no longer really involved in the movie. And it wasn't anything special. I think the idea it is based on could be expanded into a much more philosophical manner. But it did a good job of showing more or less the biography of Jim Garrison during this time period.

I only gave it the extra half point (instead of settling at 8) because what was good, was REALLY good.

I watched Shutter Island last night. With all the hype I thought it would be pretty good. But it seemed to not have much direction, the acting was mediocre, parts of it were rambling and disconnected. I liked the way it ended, but mostly it didnt impress me much at all.

Harlequin aka Dark Forces (Simon Wincer, 1980) 3
Intriguing political thriller/fantasy with some hokey effects and an impishly amusing performance from Robert Powell. It's a modern day interpretation of Rasputin and I enjoyed it quite a bit.

Watched Days of Heaven yesterday. This will sound largely negative but overall it was very good.

Some may see this as blasphemy but I really think Malick should focus on directing - and leave the writing to someone else. This was a brilliant movie ... with a second rate story and an average script. As soon as the plot was revealed, I knew exactly what was going to happen. In itself, that's not a bad thing if there is an engaging script that gets you to that obvious ending. That didn't exist IMO.

I felt the same about Tree of Life and to a lesser extent, Badlands. I felt like they should have been great experiences but they were only very good due to some parts of what should create a great movie being essentially overlooked.

I'd give this 8/10 but should have been 10/10 as it was visually stunning.

Argo - 9/10

I really want to give it 9.5, but I absolutely hate to give out anything better than a 9 to movies where I didn't go "I f***ing love that movie".

Two reasons I don't give it a higher rating: the end was ultimately predictable, to me, about a third to half way through the movie. I will say no more in fear of giving anything away. This said, I was on the edge of my seat for most of the last 20 minutes, the suspense was extremely well played.

Reason number two is Ben Affleck bothers the crap out of me! Not because I think he's a bad actor, because I like him in a lot of movies, I like the movies he both acts in and directs/produces. What bothers me about him is that I know he has emotion, I KNOW he does, because he shows them when he is in a comedy role, but not when he's in a dramatic role, where he needs to use them more. I do not understand this. I think maybe he is more comfortable in comedy roles and therefore the little things come out because he is not so stiff. Whatever, so I thought he could've done a much better job acting.

Other than that it was absolutely incredible, superb, top notch, all the way around. I didn't leave me at "I f***ing love this movie", but it definitely had me at "That was a good f***ing movie" while nodding my head. Highly recommended.

Indeed. :) It holds up with each and every viewing.

Bridge on the River Kwai

It's a movie that's always been on my list of things to see, and I think I've even seen the ending once.

And it confused me a little - as it was supposed to, I think. And during the entire last hour, my pulse quickened - for reasons I couldn't possibly explain as it appeared that very little (action-wise) was occurring in the film. But I could feel it all coming to this moment. We kept building and building and finally - I knew it - something would have to snap. I think that anticipation just made me want to watch more.

What really struck me about this movie, however, was Sir Alec Guinness. He amazed me, really. What a strange character to play, with so many little quirks and hidden character traits that we never really get to see fully come to light. We got the best glimpse of Colonel Nicholson during the final bits of the movie - as he's standing on the bridge looking out at the setting sun.

I'm a sucker for scenes like this - these sappy little moments when a character sits and analyzes himself and the world around him. When he finally comes to grips with what's going on and takes the time to settle down and just think. And I'm a sucker for sunsets. I mean, c'mon. The evidence is all around us. What made me a Star Wars fan? The twin sunset scene on Tatooine - and it's essentially Luke taking a moment to reflect on his life and where it's going--or not going, at that point in time--oh and lightsabers...and Vader.

I digress.

But what a strange character to be thrown into the boots of - Colonel Nicholson, British commander turned POW, attempting to make the best of his situation and to help his men feel like soldiers instead of slaves in the midst of their capture. And in the process, he loses sight of the big picture - falling prey to the cause. And in the end, he realizes just what his place was in this world around him...just as he pondered on the bridge in the setting sun.

How hard it must be to play a role of that magnitude. I think that's what I realise more and more when I see characters like this - characters who are dealing with strange circumstances. Or pain - physical or mental. Suffering, agony. Fear, honesty, treason, resentment, anger, hurt, happiness, love, loss.

All of these emotions are so familiar to us that sometimes we reduce them to only words. "How are you today?" we ask...only to hear the answer, "Oh, I'm fine." But what is fine? Really, what are we? Do we reduce our emotions down to the base words and forget all of the joy and confusion that there is in their true form?

We're never just one thing at one time. At least, that's how I feel.
What I suppose I'm really trying to say is that acting is trying to express the sum of our emotions - not just one emotion. It's rounding out your character to be human, to be real. And that's the best way to connect with an audience. That's what draws a character to me. There's something in their movements and words and actions that develop them as a whole person in my mind - and not just a simple portrayal of an emotion.

Anywho, I found Bridge on the River Kwai a beautifully crafted film with great depth of emotion, and sublime acting from Sir Alec Guinness. Well deserving of the praise it garners.

I didn't like this movie as much as I thought I would. I liked the idea, but I expected to love the movie, and I just didn't. I love Jim Carrey as an actor, but I feel he was miscast here. Kate Winslet was great, though. I don't know, my opinion about this movie could change in the future. For now I give it a 7, and I feel I am being generous.

This film is very simple, and it works. My favourite scenes were the last scenes (the ones that show the places they visited), and those scenes made me realize that I would've actually liked the movie a lot more if it was different. With different, I mean melancholic. It had more energy than it should've had, imo, especially the Ethan Hawke character.

Love it!

The first "great" Kung Fu film post Bruce Lee era.

Yeah the sound effects and acting are basically bad but the story is legendary. The idea that there could be a martial art based on being totally pissed, and the more you get pissed the better you get.

Kokuhaku (Confessions)

I thought it was only Korea that could do a good vengeance movie but apparently Japan can too.

This was, quite simply, mesmerising. A near perfect film from start to finish. One warning - it's dark. Story of a teacher's tragic loss and how she gets revenge on the students responsible.

Is now one of four films that I class as the best I have seen. 10/10

Sun Faa Sau Si (Biozombie)

From the sublime to the ridiculous. Hong Kong Zombie movie. Combines my two great loves - Asian cinema and zombie movies.

Looks low budget (although my partner said some of the actors are well known in Hong Kong) but was quite entertaining.

Before Sunset is better than Before Sunrise, just how I was expecting and was hoping it to be, and I am so glad it was. The acting here is better (I liked the Hawke character more than in the first movie), the pacing is better (there were quite a few long takes, from Before Sunrise I cannot recall many), the direction is better, and everything is better. Before Sunrise was full of energy, excitement, and laughs, Before Sunset was different and this is exactly why I liked it more.

I'm really looking forward to Before Midnight now.

Le piel que habito (2011)

I believe this is the most morbid movie I have ever seen and definitely no other left so unpleasant feeling. There’s no gore, no common horror scenes, just events and characters which make sure that you don’t forget them soon.
Almodóvar is great filmmaker and he proved that once again and this is a must see for all thriller/horror lovers.

8/10

Hodejegerne (2011)

Very interesting and dynamic but with few major goofs. Works like a pure thriller with a lot of suspense what, although very unrealistic at first sight, look natural and possible at the end. There are also some comedy elements, a little bit of drama and romance and nice amount of action in typically dark and anxious Scandinavian atmosphere.
It’s far from being a must see and Nesbø definitely deserves better screening but it’s above average crime-thriller and good entertainment.

Swiri (also known as Shiri)

Korean action movie with Kim Yunjin (Lost) and Choi Min-sik (Oldboy). Do you ever have times where you see reviews of a movie or look at the rating on IMDB and then, after watching the movie, wonder what the hell people were thinking? This was one of those times. When you have scene where a good guy and a bad guy fall out the window of a building, stand up pointing guns at each other ... and another person who was in the building with them is also standing there ... then the bad guy grabs a hostage in broad daylight ... then suddenly they are somewhere else and it is night time ... well, you can't give a movie like that more than 3/10. But reviews of this movie are generally positive and it is rated at 6.6 on IMDB.

The rest of the film is only just OK but I was pretty bored even before that ridiculous scene.

3/10

Slumdog Millionaire

I was really disappointed with this. I have liked all of the other Danny Boyle movies I have seen but this was just shallow. One dimensional characters, the most negative characterisation of a nation of people since Midnight Express and a situation set up to drive the story (the game show) which actually made little sense.

I'm not one to scream racism in regards to movies so the negative stereotype created by every adult in the movie being a bad person doing bad things doesn't bother me too much - it's the fact that it's really lazy film making that is the problem.

Freida Pinto was very likable despite her character being completely under-developed and I like what the film tried to do so I'll give it 5/10 but that's perhaps slightly undeserved.

Last night was movie night in the Dash household. With a film pick each my son and I settled in for an evening of entertainment; accompanied by the obligatory munchies of course--

***

Sometimes, even when things seem grim and darkness is setting in, if one tries real hard, one can find some light - however faint - in the darkness...

There is something noble and true when it comes to hope. Hope requires determination and dedication and a conscious choice to set oneself up for pitfalls and trials and tribulations. Even in the midst of despair and depression, hope can still shine. The light might be dim and it might be distorted, but even the action of continuing to live despite the pain and misery contains hope.

Even when we believe hope to be gone, it's still there. Because truly if it weren't none of us would be here. None of us would move to get out of bed. We wouldn't eat. We wouldn't sleep. We wouldn't do anything.

Because what would be the point? What would be the outcome? If every single one of your efforts was for nothing, why would you even draw a breath?

You wouldn't. You'd die. Either from your own hand or simply by having that light of expectation extinguished, your life would be over.

At it's core The Shawshank Redemption is about hope...Hope, and the resilience of the human spirit.

Despite his bleak and ofttimes intolerable surrounds, Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) a man--who steadfastly proclaims his innocence--serving a life sentence for the double murder of his wife and her lover finds hope. Not in brilliant, Broadway spotlight packages, but in small, albeit defining and significant ways; a beautiful piece of music, the establishment of a library for his fellow prisoners, teaching...and in the process retains his humanity and shines a light of hope for other prisoners.

"... hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies."

The Shawshank Redemption - my film pick

Everything in Australia wants to kill you. The flora, the fauna, and even the forces of nature. Stung, bitten, poisoned, washed out to sea with a rip or munched and crunched, whatever it might be, Australia wants you dead.

A hardy bunch those Aussies. Not fazed by their lethal surrounds. Not even by those prehistoric killing machines, the saltwater crocodile, after all they only eat the tourists...or so the running joke in the land of Oz goes.

However, not everything in life is predictable, and especially the crocodile; no one told them that tourists are the only thing on the menu. When served up an aluminum package of human snacklets cresting on a wave and a ripple who is going to be discerning? With accompanying screams and gurgles, tourists and natives alike are gobbled down as a satisfying treat.

For the appeasement of later tummy grumbles there are those lucky souls who are treated to the stash and snack later crocodilian philosophy.

I didn't want to like this cheesy monster movie about a rogue crocodile, but dare I say it...I loved it. Sad, but true. A guilty pleasure now perhaps?

There Will Be Blood 2-

I watched this once before and was nearly bored to tears. I keep reading all this fantastic stuff about it so I gave it another chance.

Well, I'll give it two stars for the spectacular cinematography. But the rest? I really, really don't understand this movie's popularity. Am I missing something? I saw a movie about a greedy, selfish man who alienates and destroys everybody around him. But neither he nor the people he destroys are really bad or good enough for me to care about their fate so once again I was bored.

Larry Crowne - 7.5/10

This was a second viewing, and I liked it a lot better this time than I did the first time. Though many of the subsequent characters were still corny/superficial/cliché, the two main characters (Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts) had more of an effect on me. I especially liked the character of Larry Crowne a lot more, who is an gentle, optimistic man who finds himself in an unfortunate societal situation. I always liked the Mercedes character. And for some reason, the happy ending didn't make me want to puke :)

The movie itself is a lot like the character Larry Crowne in the sense that you're given the bad circumstances, but as the movie progresses it works through the issues with optimism, determination, and persistence. Which, as it turns out, is really important when succeeding in higher education. (For those who don't know, the main character goes to college at about 40 years old.)

I thought it was a good movie, but it didn't do anything extra for me, and certainly wasn't special. It was typical, but I still enjoyed myself.

Zelig (1983)

Very interesting Woody Allen's mockumentary about Leonard Zelig, a man who changes his physical appearance in order to fit in.
It’s great idea presented in best possible way. It's interesting and funny but also a great caricature review of a modern man and his uncontrollable need to fit in. Too bad that most Woody Allen’s films are average romantic dramas/comedies because film like this are really necessary to the modern cinematography and Woody is obviously capable to make the.

Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis (2008)

Great comedy, great drama, great story, great screenplay and great acting. There aren’t many things in this movie that aren’t great, except maybe, totally forced and unneeded love story but it didn't made too big problem. This type of humor based on regional prejudices maybe isn’t for everyone but the ones that have similar situation in their country or region will definitely love it.

Beautiful movie. Maybe the 5th Miyazaki movie I've seen and my favourite by a long way. I felt like creating a movie obviously targeted at young children forced him to concentrate on the simple parts of the movie making process - like story and characters. Some of his others felt forced to me, particularly in regards to the fantasy elements. Here they were just there to help deliver the story.

The Thin Red Line (1998)

One of the strongest anti-war movies ever. Concentration isn’t on battle at Guadalcanal itself but on the consequences that bloody conflicts like that leave on people involved.
Directing is phenomenal, Malick did a great job. This is one of best directed movies ever. An average shot length of 8 seconds speaks for itself. Visual impression and atmosphere are at the top of the genre, a little behind Apocalypse Now or Full Metal Jacket.
It's tiring and sometimes hard to watch but that's the point and it's definitely must see of the war genre.

Police Academy (1984)

Police Academy is one of the guilty pleasures. We all know it's bad but we all have seen it, had a few laughs and when we see it on TV we watch at least a bit of it. Some of us even tried to watch the sequels but that’s complete different category of guilty pleasures.
The best part of movie is main music theme. It stays in your mind forever and always brings good feelings. Everything else is just bad. So bad that it became hilarious and at the end it became cult movie and a queen of trash comedies.
Police Academy is a bunch of stereotypes, exaggerations and caricature characters in situations and dialogs that have no sense at all. But that's the charm of it.

Argo (2012)

Not sure if it's one of my favorite films of 2012 yet, but it's definitely one of the most intense I've ever seen. A terrific cast, a wonderful premise based off true events, and it kept my heart pounding right up until the end. I have virtually no problems with this film, honestly, other than a few trite lines here and there. One of the best of 2012, from my objective standpoint. From a personal view, it was heartfelt, sincere, and kept me interested all the way through.

4/4 stars

Lincoln (2012)

A film that's really all about the man: Abraham Lincoln. He had an enormous battle in front of him, trying to pass the 13th Amendment, and this film portrays his inner conflicts and the racists he faced to have the amendment passed. Some historical inaccuracies bother me, but the story is riveting, the writing superb, and the acting downright flawless from all directions, especially from Daniel Day-Lewis (the man completely disappeared into the role) and Tommy Lee Jones (a firebrand performance all the way through). Definitely a must-own, even if the history flaws bother you.

3.5/4 stars

Django Unchained (2012)

This film can only be summed up in one word: merciless. Merciless in its portrayal of slavery, the racism of the time, and its over-the-top violence. And you know what? It's still an awesome flick! Great characters (especially Calvin Candy and Dr. King Shultz), excellent writing, and a very long but satisfying story make this film one of my favorites of 2012, and earns a top spot on my top Tarantino films, right behind Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill Vol. 1 and 2.

Tagline: The next scream you hear may be that of the cinema manager!

Plot synopsis: Mild-mannered mother sets aside her abhorrence of all things Robert Downey Jr to take her beloved son to see a recently released comic book film. Being sensible of the fact that they are new to the region the mild-mannered mother rings around to find a cinema that is wheelchair friendly as the young boy is a paraplegic confined to a wheelchair. Finds wheelchair friendly cinema and makes arrangements to attend an evening showing of the film. Mild-mannered mother and excited young boy drive two hours to cinema...Accessing cinema complex easily only to be told that--despite prior arrangements being made--demand for ticketing for the particular session meant that the manager had placed (removable) seating in the area which accommodates wheelchairs when needed. Mild-mannered mother confronts cinema manager about the predicament, and is forthwith told that the now-dissapointed boy could come back another time or he could get out of his wheelchair and sit on the ledge that runs around the perimeter of the cinema. Mild-mannered mother is not going to let her beloved now-disappointed son be treated as such and verbal dresses down cinema manager. Cinema manager tries to placate mild-mannered mother and now-disappointed boy with 10 free movie tickets--salt in the wound. When this doesn't placate mild-mannered mother cinema behemothic (he was huge(!)) manager tries to intimidate by stepping into the personal space of mild-mannered mother. After some verbal tussling between mild-mannered mother and ignorant behemothic cinema manager the now-disappointed boy manages to convince his mother to leave before she goes all Tommy Riordan (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?p=891142) on the ignorant behemothic cinema manager's ass. Mild-mannered mother and still-disappointed boy go eat sushi and visit the planetarium.

I would have written a proper review (albeit in my usual off-centred way) if I had actually been able to see the film. Perhaps instead I shall leave you with what was almost the headline on the overnight newsfeeds:

A film that's really all about the man...Definitely a must-own, even if the history flaws bother you.
Two things. These sentences make no sense together. Also, it was definitely not all about the man, it was all about the amendment.

I have never acted so unladylike in public before...or have I ever wanted to punch someone so much. The man was an ignoramus.

Hopefully there will never be an occasion for a sequel or remake. ;)

Oh. D'oh!

I've been given an Iron Man 3 reprieve until it comes out on DVD. To make up for the disappointment my son now wants to inflict Star Trek Into Darkness (he's a Trekkie, I'm a Star Wars fangirl) upon me when it is released here next week.

Sushi was great, thanks for asking. :) Planetarium was the best part of the evening.

Blow 8/10 - Very entertaining story of George Jung, credited with being the man who helped create the cocaine culture in the USA in the laste 70s/early 80s. Great true story, whether embellished or not, light hearted for the most part with some emotion as well, and interesting (to me) subject matter.

The Cabin in the Woods 7/10 - 2nd time I have watched this so knew more what to expect. Very clever film full of nice touches for horror fans, (although no real horror or scares as such) and the mystery over what is happening also kept my non-horror guests entertained nicely as well! Not the genre changer it was hyped to be, but funny, gross and awesome monster fun :)

I wouldn't say I loved it, it is a movie I would gladly rewatch though. The fact that it is a parody is exactly why I liked it because I'm not really into horror anymore, as a matter of fact I now hate most horrors that I used to love when I was like 14, teen horrors in particular. Cabin in the Woods looked like it was going to be that kind of horror and full of cliches, but I got a pleasant surprise, like most people I would presume.

The elevator scene was truly awesome, I really loved that scene.

PaperMan - 8.3/10

I thought this was a great movie. And, I'm especially glad that the relationship of the two main characters did not get creepy. It still qualified as weird, but creepy no, and it fit perfectly actually. I can't really give it a higher rating because I don't think it was really anything special in terms of being a piece of art, but I'm going back and forth between 8 and 8.5 for it being a well done film, a great story, and extra points for being unique.

The Hours - 10/10

There is nothing I can find wrong with this movie, and everything is spectacular. This was a re-watch for me, so I knew the premise, but forgot the ending. I would like to know what men think of the movie, because I think it connects much more with women, but maybe I'm wrong. The idea that planning a party is a big deal, or being "the wife" in the 50's has unspoken responsibility or expectations, I feel like men may not really understand the impact of these circumstances. But like I said, everything was spectacular.

It's the seventh I've seen from Miyazaki and I think it may be my second favorite of his (I'm a huge fan of Spirited Away, so that one remains first).
I personally found it more charming than Princess Mononoke (which was also great). Porco Rosso and My Neighbor Totoro are also pretty close to that second spot, but Nausicäa has more substance.
I also enjoyed Kiki's Delivery Device and Ponyo, but I wouldn't rank those at the top.

Miyazaki is a fantastic filmmaker.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011) I really enjoyed this one. I liked the first one, but I liked this one more. The entire cast is fun, but Jared Harris almost steals the show as Moriarty, Holmes greatest foe. 8/10

The Presence (2010) I had never even heard of this film until today when it came on cable. Mira Sorvino is a woman who isolates herself in her old family cabin to write, while a silent ghost watches her every move. While it can be a bit daunting to see this ghost just stand and stare for a good portion of the movie, it does evolve story-wise and pays off in the end. It's not a "jump-scare" type of movie, but there are some creepy moments throughout. Mira's boyfriend shows up, and so does someone who is played by Tony Curran (an actor I really admire), whose agenda becomes clearer and clearer. The identity of the of the ghost is revealed eventually, and the ending is one I rarely see in more cynical movies these days. Slow-moving, to be sure, but worth it for the buildup to the end. 8/10

1989 is when John Le Carre's novel The Russia House was published. 1990 is when the film adaptation came out. Glasnost. Perestroika. A sea change both in the Soviet bloc and East-West relations. And this is the context of both the novel and the movie.

Le Carre worked for British intelligence before the success of his early novels enabled him to become a full-time author. For me, his earlier novels set during the heart of the Cold War (e.g. The Spy Who Came in From the Cold, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Smiley's People) were his best. In those books, masterfully and without sentimentality, he unveiled a taut world of lies, deception and moral compromise.

With The Russia House we enter a new world, the beginning of sole American military and political hegemony. It was a brief window of time in which some hoped that resources which had long gone into the arms race would be diverted for more humanitarian purposes. A Russian physicist, Dante (Klaus Maria Brandauer), has information which, if made publicly available, would help turn these hopes into reality. Dante tries to pass this information to a middle-aged, hard-drinking, jazz-playing British publisher, Barley (Sean Connery), but it is intercepted by British intelligence.

http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcT1i4ZckEABEqf7YH0EpATBCHvsb7g9mQjzIZa7okN4RJ6qaUoJdA

MI6 convince Barley to liaison further with Dante, and by extension Dante's friend, Katya (Michelle Pfeiffer). This is another strong point of Le Carre's: portraying how random civilians get unwittingly drawn into the world of secrets and espionage (see also The Little Drummer Girl, The Tailor of Panama and The Constant Gardener). Connery does a fantastic job at playing the obstreperous, irreverent Barley, who is more inclined to follow his heart than national dictates. Pfeiffer's acting as the morally committed Katya is equally solid, with a fine, believable Russian accent that would make Meryl Streep proud. There are also fine supporting performances by Roy Scheider and James Fox as American and British spooks.

The movie contains good dialogue by Tom Stoppard and great location filming in Moscow and Leningrad. By creating a nexus of conflicting interests, including that of the U.S. military industrial complex, we are left wondering, till just before the end, how the chips will ultimately fall. Nevertheless, the film manages to finish on a flattish note - pat, almost sappy.

In my opinion, the end of the Cold War is around the time that John Le Carre's writing and storytelling began to suffer, and the film adaptation of The Russia House, particularly its final fifteen minutes, reflects this demise. Increasingly, Le Carre began to try to inject personal, ideological and moral messages into his novels. It doesn't matter if you agree with his assumptions and conclusions (I happen to agree with many of them). It takes a writer with a high degree of subtlety and finesse to weave those kinds of messages into a novel without hitting the reader (and the viewer, if the book is faithfully adapted into a film) over the head and having the story as a whole suffer. And while Le Carre is a very good writer, he apparently does not possess the capability to comfortably pull off such a feat.

Because I enjoyed the first 90 percent of the film I'll give The Russia House 7/10.

Yeah its a really good film and definitely one of Ghibli's best, only thing I have found with this one is it hasn't lingered around in my mind, even though it left a really strong impression on me at the time. Not knocking the film though, other great films have a similar impact initially, but seem to dissipate with time. Also, if you are open to other Ghibli films I would personally recommend Whisper of the Heart, Princess Mononoke and Nausicaa. You might also like Only Yesterday and Ocean Waves if you want another slice of life film. Probably best just watching them all though as they are all good :p.

The Breakfast Club4

Watched this for the first time a few weeks ago, really loved the film, it just hit all the right notes for me and really nailed the whole school atmosphere; hasn't dated either. Definitely recommend.

Salo - 0
Can understand why you'd give Salo that score. Hard film to watch with a sensitive eye and definitely not for everyone, particularly if you plan on taking a fairy loving Cinderella type girl on a date to watch it. Personally, I think its a masterpiece, probably helps that I find parts of Salo pretty funny in the darkest way possible.

I watched A Bronx Tale a couple nights ago, good film and probably a 3.5. Liked the message of the film, especially the rivalry of the two father figures played by De Niro and Palminteri; definitely the two best parts of the film imo. Only complaints, some of the dialogue is a bit bland at times and I think this detracts from the film a bit. The love story in the film is a bit lame, particularly when he skips up, punches the air and shouts Yippee like a high pitched little girl after being in a bar brawl a few minutes earlier; love story is a bit wooden and static in general, although I think this could have been done on purpose to build the theme of racial tensions at the time. Worth watching and probably on the same level as Carlito's Way or Donnie Brasco.

I think Pasolini had every right to make Salo the way he wanted, but I believe his methods prevent most film watchers from ever wanting to see it and thus getting the anti-fascist message. There is a certain fascination in watching all the depravity, but I found it too slow and the fascists to be almost clown-like which also greatly diminishes the power, and I don't believe any of it is intended as a black comedy. I won't go into why someone might have problens with it for aesthetic reasons.

And after reading the essay I now know where the director came from, but now I have to question if he could not have chosen a better way to reflect these feelings in the film.

I guess if the movie is going to be shocking, explicit, and exploitative, the movie had better be campy and or fun for me to like it.

The Royal Tenenbaums (2001) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0265666/)

A story about unusual family told on unusual way from the eyes of Wes Anderson.
It’s good family drama with many elements of comedy with strange and memorable characters directed in a wonderful, fairytale like, way.
It doesn’t deviate much from other Anderson’s movies. Directing is almost the same with similar type of characters and narration. Since it’s probably most normal of his movies I would recommend it to those not familiar with Anderson’s work.

8/10

Another Earth (2011) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1549572/)

Simple story about a mistake, tragedy, ruined lives and redemption with metaphorical Sci-Fi elements which only purpose is to highlight hope for different flow of life.
It’s a type of story seen many times before, even with that Sci-fi context but it always leaves hard impact on viewer like the true drama should do. This probably is enjoyable only to the drama lovers and although it is kind of Sci-fi it definitely isn’t for typical Sci-fi fan.

They have poor acting, bad scripts, little in the way of story and whilst the special effects are the only thing they have going for them, they still aren't great - far too cartoon like. Very disappointed.

In order 4/10, 4/10, 3/10, 9/10, 8/10 & 5/10.

In Time (2011) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1637688/)

You know that movies with good idea that you like at the beginning but at the end there’s actually no good sides of the movie that you can point out to someone who didn’t see it? Yes, In Time is one of that kind.
Development of characters almost couldn’t be shallower, there’s a few plot holes, acting of some supporting actors is terrible and so on, but all in all it isn’t all bad. It’s fun and mostly interesting and really enjoyable to Sci-Fi/Action lovers but to someone expecting new Gattaca this will be disappointing.

6,4/10

Three Coloros: Blue (1993) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108394/)

First part of Krzysztof Kieslowski's trilogy about French society concerns how the wife of a famous composer deals with the death of her husband and child in accident.
Somber and dark drama for lovers of good old European existentialism. You probably shouldn’t watch this if you’re in a good mood or you want the movie that will bring you in one but only if you want to watch people suffering and trying to cope with mayor life problems. Of course, that’s not something negative but watching it with wrong expectations and in wrong mood will definitely end with not loving the film.
It’s good drama with great atmosphere but there’s nothing to remember from it. Characters are plain and their relationships are strange, there are almost no happenings, dialogues often have no sense and when you combine that with negative emotions that this movie causes final impression isn’t best.
But there’s something in it that would make you watch it again. Something attractive. So I would say that if you are in a mood for hard and dark existentialism go for a Kieslowski’s trilogy, but only then.

Before Sunset (2004)

Like its predecessor, a delightfully human and well-written film. Finds new ground and expands on it, yet remains sincere to the original. Its minimalist approach to story enhances the simplicity of the film, yet also develops the intricacy of both leads. Its conclusion almost felt abrupt in its pacing, and even somewhat underwhelming. Furthermore, I also thought 80 minutes was relatively short to tell this type of story. Nonetheless, a good film and slightly superior to the first.

Beyond its interesting documentary-like approach, this film was just empty and off-putting. Not even its relatively diverting story could make up for the monotonous characters and repellent pacing. In saying that, film noir has never been my thing, but this was definitely underwhelming.

I get that hardcore Trekkies can't stand the new series. But seriously, JJ Abrams nailed it on so many levels. The plot was so satisfying coming from someone who follows the older series but doesn't consider himself a Trekkie.

As Tears Go By

Wong Kar Wai is possibly my favourite director but this, his first film, is not great. All the elements that make his later films great are there but unfortunately they are surrounded by a pretty poor movie.

Reasonably standard Hong Kong crime/action story that is elevated to an extent by a love story involving Andy Lau and Maggie Cheung. Cheung is, as always, captivating and she is the highlight of the film. She is one of the great actresses of our time but unfortunately most in the west have probably never seen her in a movie.

Most unfortunate part of the whole movie is a cantonese version of Take My Breath Away being used for an extended scene in the middle of the movie. Just awful.

Wish I liked it more but too many bad scenes and an ending that made no sense.

Fairly endearing tale that explores some pretty radicals ideas, although needs much more than eighty minutes to develop them. It also seemed too quick-witted for its own good. Despite this, solid chemistry between both Segel and Helms and a poignant touching ending makes this good comedy/drama.

F**K YES! But the ending was brilliant! Even after all the sick and twisted stuff that is put on screen, at the end, hope for humanity. And I do not know what it is but there is something hypnotic about a David Lynch movie. I just can't look away. I want to take it all in.

This essay (http://www.criterion.com/current/posts/513-salo-the-present-as-hell) describes my thoughts better than I could if you're interested. It's less about "liking" it though, as there are multiple films I can watch under pretense of engagement with ideas rather than enjoyment. Perhaps I'm more predisposed to being open to bizarre stuff but I'm certainly not alone on this one.

Ideas rather than enjoyment? How about reading a non-fiction book about ideas?

Are you saying you enjoyed Battle of Algiers because massacres are entertaining? Or is it because the ideas behind the film were interesting?

Django Unchained (2012)

Fun film. I was afraid Tarantino was going to be too excessive with the homages, but he finds the right balance between telling his own story and staying true to the Western genre. Felt a little long and extravagant at times, but still a pleasant surprise, especially considering my rather ambivalent viewpoint on Tarantino as a filmmaker.

Safety Last! (1923)

Hugely entertaining slice of silent comedy from Harold Lloyd. Daring stunts, timeless gags and a genuine, compelling story at its heart makes this film a blast to watch.

A little too slow for my liking. Give me those Star Wars prequels over this any day. I can see clearly that it was based off a student film--it has that student feel. I don't like movies that seem like art for art's sake. Whereas I didn't enjoy 2001: A Space Odyssey the first time around, I feel a second viewing will change my opinion. With THX, however, I don't think I'll give it a second chance.

Room in Rome

Watched this for the LGBT Movie Tournament (it was matched with Hedwig and the Angry Inch). Went into it knowing absolutely nothing about it and having zero expectations, so I cannot say that I was disappointed. However, I can say that I was quite bored of it. I get that the movie occurs over one night in one room, but it seems like nothing happened. These two women - one straight, one lesbian, both in relationships with other people - meet, go to a hotel room and proceed to alternate between lying to each other about who they are and having sex with each other and the viewer is expected to believe that they fall in love. One or both of them is naked throughout nearly the entire movie and it just seems like overkill. I felt like I was watching bad softcore porn rather than a proper movie. The sex scenes themselves struck me as being mostly and even at times (bathtub scene) just downright silly.

I have seen the Soderbergh version, problem is I have not seen it in years, and it did not leave that much of an impression on me. :/ Then again I was a teenager then so much of how I view film has changed greatly. So I really cannot say.

As for the Tarkovsky version, I admit it started very slow, but as they movie went on it did get more interesting, but it is very mentally draining. I get the feeling this is one of those movies I would have to sit through more then once to truly appreciate. And I do feel I would want to watch it again in the future, which is more then I can say for other movies.

Food, Inc. - 7.5/10

That's being generous. They brought up a good idea/debate, however the way the movie was done was completely cinematic and not what a good documentary should be. As a skeptic going in, but also a full animal and nature lover and respector (granted I don't know if those are real words), I was disappointed by their lack of gaining my conviction. It was a Hollywood-ized propaganda which needs much improvement if it wants to convince anyone other than a small minded, emotional pushover. This being said, even though some of their points were not argued correctly, they surfaced some valid points which need to be looked at and not looked over. Also, though I did think it was skewed, I still think of it when I am eating my chicken and eggs, and eating and growing my veggies. So in the end, well played. Though I don't really believe most of what you said.

District 9 - 8.5/10

This is a re-watch, I saw it in theaters. Awesome movie, and I love the faux-documentary direction. I am not a big fan of Sci-Fi, or action for that matter, but this had both aspects but was much deeper. It used the science fiction to explore a new world, and the action to raise suspense, all the while having an incredible storyline and idea. I think it was the perfect balance of all of these things, not to mention the acting (though there were few main characters who had actual lines), which made the movie have the impact it did. I did forget how it ended, and I was expecting more resolution for some reason because of what I thought I remembered (I think I confused it with a scene from Transformers), but that's a personal pet peeve of not having a movie conclude when it ends. Still, it was a good ending. It did leave a few things unanswered, as well as an open-end, but these things did not take away from the enjoyment of the movie. So another "well played" in my book.
