All I knew about this film was 'Marilyn Manson'(who I'm a fan of) had a role in it but for some reason I thought this film was about a religious cult with 'Marilyn Manson's' character as the leader and was looking forwards to that a lot but it turned out to be a totally different film and unfortunately he wasn't in it much but when he was it was worth watching.

I dont know his music but from a doco I saw he comes across as a super smart guy which impressed me. I just found his acting very flat. Fortunately his role was over before SoA completely nosedives in the final season. Dont take my word for it, though. You might like him. I;m just very picky, especially when it comes to Kurt Sutter's stunt casting with singers.

Popcorn. An elaborate student-organized horror movie marathon night at a local cinema proves the perfect stalking ground for a madman out for revenge in this early 90s tongue in cheek horror flick that essentially serves up a post-modern slasher parody five years before Scream. Not that it's as good as that, mind, but it's an entertaining and good natured flick starring late 80s/early 90s Scream Queen Jill Schoelen.

I'll be honest, as much as I thought The Graduate was an important piece of history, and had some nice moments, I could never buy the story. Seemed not only far fetched, but kind of despicable. I'm sure I'm not the first to say that haha.

The Elephant Man (1980) (Dir. David Lynch) 4
https://i.imgur.com/RtduDin.jpg

David Lynch travels back to the pre-code era to pay homage to such forebearers as James Whales' Frankenstein (1931) and Tod Browning's Freaks (1932) with a keen eye for the filmmaking style of the period. The affectionate hand by which the character of John Merrick is drawn speaks to the paradox of David Lynch himself, a gentle soul intimately in touch with the darkness of the human heart. The Elephant Man may take place in the same Lynchian void as Eraserhead, an industrial, nightmarish hellscape muffled by the whirring of machinery and the cries of souls, but instead of being consumed by this peculiar purgatory, Lynch dictates an account of a man who transcended it, if only briefly. It's not as impenetrably personal an experience as Lynch's debut, but Merrick's ability to find catharsis in art, in theater, and in connection with others is clearly a sentiment shared by both the author and the subject.

The Mummy. The 2017 version, where Tom Cruise battles an undead woman with nasty powers who wants to... I don't know, cause general chaos. Or something. Really, who the hell cares? This got massively panned and while I kind of wanted to like it as I don't mind Cruise and I sometimes have a tendency to wildly disagree with some whiny critics on some films (T5 and the recent The Circle being prime examples), I thought this deserved a drubbing and then some. Lifeless, lazy runaround CGI boreathon. In the immortal words of Monty Python, it's a piece of s***, when you look at it.

Hell or High Water (2016)

A fine movie about crime and law in Texas, filmed in New Mexico and perfectly captured on film by a director from Scotland, David MacKenzie! Written by talented actor/writer/director/producer Taylor Sheridan, the movie tells the story of two differing pairs of men: one pair are bank-robbing brothers, the other pair are Texas Rangers on the brothers' trail. The movie works most excellently paralleling the two sets of men and their likenesses and differences. The movie takes its time letting us really get to know these men and how they work together and sometimes clash in their styles. That's the real joy of the movie, the compare and contrast of the relationships. Bringing the roles to life are Chris Pine and Ben Foster as brothers Toby and Tanner Howard respectively, and Jeff Bridges and Gil Birmingham as lawmen Marcus Hamilton and Alberto Parker, also respectively. Toby is the more of a step-back and think type of man, while his brother Tanner, recently released from prison, is the loose cannon. Marcus is more gung-ho, despite his near-retirement age, and Alberto is the calmer thinker of the two.

When the Howard brothers mother dies, their childhood ranch home is jeopardized, with the bank threatening to foreclose, especially since oil has been found on their land. Time is of the essence, so the brothers go on a bank-robbing spree in small, quiet towns within a certain radius of their home. To really spotlight how Tanner can put the brothers in a perilous predicament, there is a scene where the two brothers are enjoying a meal at a small town diner, when Tanner excuses himself. While Toby is still relaxing at the diner, Tanner goes across the street and executes an unplanned robbery at the local bank across the street. This of course distresses Toby mightily. On the other hand, Good old boy Ranger Marcus has fun picking on Alberto's Native American blood. You'd think this would drive them apart but you can tell that Alberto doesn't take true offense because he can give as good as he gets and the Rangers care about each other. As do the outlaw brothers. And they are headed for a meetup.

The action is spread throughout the movie with the various bank robberies, a fight that occurs when a couple of young punks stupidly taunt one of the brothers at a convenience store, and car chases as the brothers speed out of town. The lawmen's scenes are more laid-back but never dull as their priorities in life come out during their conversations. Their styles of working a case somewhat differently come out during their road trips and their stops along the way. The supporting characters are all great, some providing wry humor, especially the crabby old waitress the lawmen meet up with. The cinematography is beautiful all along the way, whether it be in the scrub brush riddled countryside of Texas (actually New Mexico), or the small, sleepy towns along the way, with the beautiful paintbrush of the photography really bringing the color of these locations to vivid life. The soundtrack, with the hard-edged country songs playing, are perfect for whatever is happening onscreen, whether the lyrics go along with the scene or not...the music is the key and it's perfect. There's nary a wasted moment in the movie. Every scene adds to the story from start to finish. A great movie.

My Cousin Rachel (2017)
3.5

It's very pretty and Rachel Weitz is very good but it doesn't really work as a "mystery". Basically it's the story of a man/boy who takes in his cousin/father's wife believing her to be some sort of monster. Though really it's more of a character study in psuedosexual politics of the era. It doesn't hit the same heights as say a Rebecca, Gaslight or Jane Erye but it is good and watchable.

A father and son set of coroners are given the task of dissecting and investigating a strange body. As the story continues strange things happen. It's a high concept horror film that feels like a really good Twilight Zone episode stretched to an hour and a half.

This was a blind buy for me at the local second hand video store. Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee star in this mystery about a group of trustees that end up dying one by one. It's a strong concept but the execution is a bit faulty. Somewhat of a waste but if you are a lee/cushing fan it's worth tracking down.

Good Time

I just saw this in theaters, and it was brilliant. I was interested because it was a cannes selection and the trailer looked decent, but it vastly surpassed my expectations. The plot was so unpredictable. The way they delivered the opening credits was unlike anything I've seen before, dispersed through the first act. Some movies have an opening scene and then credits, but this kept dispersing them gracefully over multiple scenes. I never knew where the plot would take me next. I never expected how a single scene would unfold. It was a very intelligent and creative film. There were a few camera shots that perplexed me. How did they film the car driving from a helicopter view for so long? Did they rent a helicopter? But the shot started lower, went up high, and followed the car a while. I don't know how they filmed it. Overall it was a great movie, extremely realistic, emotional, and beautiful. The music sometimes reminded me of The Neon Demon.

Viceroy's House

Lord Louis Mountbatten was given the unenviable position of being the final viceroy of India under British Colonial rule, interesting from a historical standpoint with many real life figures including Gandhi, a sub plot of a Sikh/Muslim romance I felt was a bit watery and added on, Gillian Anderson is good as Battens tireless wife who want's India to remain one nation.

IT. A bunch of kids in the late 80s come to the terrifying realisation that their small town plays home to a demonic entity that feeds on children in part one of an intended 2-part adaptation of the Stephen King horror bestseller. IT has been filmed before, of course, as a TV mini-series back in 1990 (27 years ago, rather deliciously the same length of time in which IT hibernates between each killing spree). What worked then were the kid cast and Tim Curry as the Pennywise the Clown manifestation of IT; what didn't work as well were the adult cast playing the older version of the kids and the general execution, which was was often a bit TV Movie lame. The good news is the new kids and the new Pennywise live up to their predecessors, while the film leaves out the adult aspect entirely (presumably for the second film) and the execution is undeniably just all round better, classier, and scarier. The late 80s setting and vibe is also very nice. All in all the new IT is a more than worthy effort and a very entertaining horror flick.

A VERY dark and sleazy film. Which I do greatly appreciate in any film I watch. There are a few issues though. They are minor and can be easily ignored by most. But not by me.

First this movie is set in Dallas. It however was no filmed in Dallas. Hell I don't even think this was even filmed in Texas; it looks more like Louisiana. Thanks to the Blu Ray I purchased and a fairly large screen TV I saw a highway sign with I-10 on it (which does not run through Dallas) with directions to both New Orleans and I believe the other one was Biloxi Mississippi. Though to the film's credit they do reference Harry Hines Blvd which is in the west part of Dallas.

For "West Dallas" there is a significant lack of Hispanics.

For "West Dallas" there is an unnatural amount of poor White Trash.

There is no Celestial Bodies Gentlemen's Club in Dallas (but one Celestial Bodies club was closed just south of I-10 in Louisiana just after the movie completed being shot).

While they got the Dallas Police uniforms and squad cars about as close as they could, they were not authentic. The badges were noticeably different from DPD issue; McConaughey's badge number is WAAAAY too low, and the "West Dallas Station" does not exist. Just trust me on those details.

But you know what? F**K the gripes! McConaughey was a complete sociopath and the ending was amazing! Just do yourself a solid and pretend that this takes place in the Deep Grove part of Dallas an the movie becomes all the stronger!

4.5

I loved near everything about this, from Robert Wise's tight direction and Bernard Herrmann's score to the tasty special effects and the beautiful black-and-white cinematography by Leo Tover. For a sci-fi movie made in 1951, I think it's aged really well (the Blu-ray transfer is fantastic).

I just cannot enjoy the message this movie delivers. It is safe to say this movie is against war, yet it portrays Japan as the only 'victims' in the movie. For god sake, they started the war and they were like animals killing people out there in WW2. The message is unbelievably hypocritical.

The War for the Planet of the Apes 4.5++ A truly excellent and poignant ending to the trilogy with some fun references to original characters I actually got a kick out of.
The trilogy is a very hard watch, emotionally, for me, but, MY GOD, what an excellent revision of a childhood favorite. This could have easily gone the all action/no intelligence route and it DIDN'T. There is depth to the characters and far more going on to the story then merely pitting apes against humans.

there are a number of losses of family and of hardship for Ceaser and others during this and through the trilogy. Prisoners (2013)

As the final credits were rolling, I couldn’t shake my feeling of
grateful surprise over the absence of what I’d been expecting in Prisoners. Having seen the shock ending of Villeneuve’s Enemy, along with some lesser surprises in his Arrival, and even after reading a review, I had anticipated some weird plot turns orjarring events to pop out of the narrative.

But in retrospect I was evidently conflating the director with the writers, each of whom had been very different in previous Villeneuve pictures. As it turns out, Prisoners is an enjoyable, rather classic thriller/kidnap yarn that benefitted from keen direction and photography.

The interesting cast was first rate: Jake Gyllenhaal, HughJackman, Paul Dano, and an unrecognizable Melissa Leo (who had stand out roles in the old “Homicide: Life on the Streets” series, and as Laura Poitras in Snowden). Viola Davis, at her age, was miscast as a mother with youngish children. And in fact the story line of the close friendship between the white and black families didn’t feel natural; unlikely at best.

I’m not a fan of kidnapping films (the category has gotten trite), or those with palpable suspense. Yet Prisoners was satisfying without being horrific or repulsive. In fact, but for the obligatory torture scene, it could have been rated PG-13. One of these days I’ll watch it again to enjoy it without having to anticipate something dreadful.

Doc's rating: 7 of 10

Little Evil (2017) rating_2 (Did not finish)

Little Evil is funny in parts and has some excellent moments, and my not liking this flick may have boiled down to personal taste. However, I would not recommend this to a friend, since I perceive that its main problems wrest on the fact that it feels like the whole movie is one large third act. Since everything in the movie feels like the ending, it makes the moments in between the action a pure slog to sit through. There is also a problem with Samantha (Evangeline Lilly) alternating between being conniving and ignorant, but I am unsure if it is the fault of the writing or Lilly's acting.

People who like good humored gore, or Adam Scott comedies will probably enjoy it. Available exclusively on Netflix streaming.

Baskin (2015)
Director: Can Evrenol
3.5

Here's a movie that blew me back a few seats. I've always thought most horror films just parade about with the typical minimalistic low bass synth drone score and add stinger cuts with sound that seem to rip off the opening titles from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I've also been quite tired of horrors not being scary or even creepy aside from a sometimes well placed jump scare which never really decorates the film as being horrifying. "Baskin" is as close to being genuinely scary as I can remember a horror film being.

You have a group of police officers getting a call to an unfamiliar section of town and when they get there things happen.

The level of sadistic blood, gore and disturbing content is the highest I think I can tolerate, and it's pretty damned high. I don't have a weak stomach. I wasn't scared but I was very disturbed, and felt like hell was literally washing over and through me. I'm going through a rough patch in life these past several months and this movie almost seemed supernatural to me and my own personal situation. I can only speak of this film in a semi biased manner because of this, but I will say that if I were to have seen this picture at any other time in my life, I believe I'd feel very similar because it certainly becomes something of a nightmare that any thinking person could consider. I almost want to say this is spiritual horror film making. It is a cautionary tale for the worship of power and also of speaking out of turn about things you really don't know anything about

What if the shepards of darkness were as calm and assuring as a nursery rhyme, but what they could do to you and your soul was as vicious as anything you could imagine? This whole experience was unexpected because it goes from a small town at night diner film with some slightly suspenseful agitation, to a reminisce of Dagon with a folk lore atmosphere, to a full blown journey to the center of the earth and the fire belly of man's ego and dark animal.

I won't be seeing this anytime soon but I am glad I rolled the dice on it. This movie is completely whacked out. Super weird and circular, and leaves enough to ponder afterwards for a simpleton like myself. I still can't totally understand what happened but it's one of those films where I don't mind. I'm not going into a think tank to try and figure it out.

To watch only if someone likes animations and superheroes. A delightfully presented film in the Batman universe, where (in my opinion) no Batman plays a major role. The film brought a lot to the character Harley Quinn, insulated her image. There are a lot of funny scenes in the movie and it is stuffed with sexuality. I've seen better animations, but the movie has its own style. 6/10

IT (2017)

I wasn't dissapointed. IT was decent, rarely has a movie surpassed a great book and IT is a great book IMO. The exception would be LOTR. So this was the case...some scenes could have been shorter and others elaborated but maybe you can only think/decide even notice that by reading the book. Maybe one of the better horror movies this year but it comes nowhere near how scary, intriguing and just plain good/great the Conjuring 1 and 2 felt. IT has "borrowed" some elements from the aforementioned, one of which involves a painting, which mind you, doesn't appear in the book.

Very strong opening scene though, gave me tingles. Then it's decent and enjoyable with likeable characters, more of a one time watch though. I'm left with...a wish, that they had made this into a big budget HBO type mini series given the magnitude of the book which details intimately the characters, the town and the.....horror. But thats a dream and we have a great book and a decent movie.

IT (2017)

Probably not the most well made movie this year, but its the one I had the most fun watching, I had a grin ear to ear at the very beginning out of pure excitement. I feel like this is about as good an adaptation of a book the size of a bible could be, and Bill Skarsgård knocks it out of the park bringing such a memorable and disturbing take on Pennywise to screen, the guy had the look, the laugh, the voice. He brought such a presence and stole every scene he was in(duh), which really got me wishing we had gotten more of him in contrast to the other forms IT takes as they stood out as being significantly less interesting and refined. I loved the little things about him like how his eyes would randomly go cross eyed, or he'd just let drool slobber down his chin paying no mind because, why would he? He's an inter-dimensional fear monster, he has no idea people like, maintain that. The kids were great, the movie wouldn't have worked so well without them being able to bounce off of each other so well, and most got ample screen time with the exception of the character Mike, who had literally nothing to do in this movie. I liked their way of incorporating the deadlights. Man, I enjoyed it a heck of a lot. There's a little ramble. I'll give it a 5 because it did what I wanted it to and more so even if it wasn't brilliant it did more than I wanted it to. WHY NOT!

I barely give this a passing grade and wouldn't recommend it to most others. It's the depravity of it that kept me interested and also a great performance from Scott Haze. He plays an almost animal like man who lives in the woods on the outskirts of a small town. To say he is sick would be an understatement. Despite the movie being decent for me, I am not at all impressed with James Franco as a director.

I really enjoyed this one. However I can't help but think about the comedy/humor that was both a good and bad thing for this movie. The dialogue between the kids were at times hilarious, and some of the jokes had the whole theater laughing. However, I can't help but think that this isn't a great "horror" movie because there was a little TOO much comic relief. This movie falls into the modern trend of movies today that, even though they're not comedies, they try to make you laugh every 2-3 minutes. For that I consider it more of a horror-comedy like Gremlins or Krampus (which both I like, don't get me wrong) as opposed to some of the straight-up horror classics like The Shining and Halloween. It does has its scary parts, but like I said there was so much comic relief that it even started to leak into the scary parts and would literally take me out of "horror mode".

All in all, it's definitely worth checking out, I just felt like I needed to ramble about that a bit.

IT (2017) - rating_3+

This was quite the disappointment for my mother, who was expecting something substantially scary. While this adaptation looked better to her, especially from a special effects stand-point, she didn't think it did enough to distinguish itself from the 1990 mini-series. She still thought it was a fairly good movie, just nowhere near what she was expecting.

While I thought the film struck a good balance between originality and familiarity, I definitely agree with her assertion that it wasn't at all frightening. I didn't think the atmosphere was creepy enough, but I might've thought differently if I was watching it by myself at home. I find that the theatre setting kills that kind of tension for me, so it's hard to judge that accurately. I am, however, and incredibly jumpy person (especially when it comes to loud musical stings), but none of the film's jump scares managed to shake me either.

I think this film definitely has a better narrative structure than the mini-series, with the story unfolding more organically, rather than having to rely on flashbacks. Unfortunately it did feel even longer than its already substantial runtime, though I'm not sure what could've been cut to improve that. I'd personally get rid of the plot with the bullies, but as I understand it, that type of murderous delinquent is a signature character in a lot of Stephen King stories.

Even though neither myself nor my mother thought it was outstanding, IT is still a very solid film, and probably one of the more universally appealing King adaptations. I'd definitely be interested in seeing how Part Two would play out, so I'm hoping the film-makers go that route instead of making a prequel.

This is the first great car chase scene, which blew all of us away at the time. But of course 3 years later Friedkin came up with the best one ever in The French Connection..;)

Stephen King terrified people with IT, his second longest novel next to The Stand. Bringing kids fears to life with the embodiment of Pennywise the dancing clown. In 1990, the 'epic' story was turned into a two part TV-Mini series starring Tim Curry and John Ritter. As a kid, that film was terrifying due to the performance of the friendly clown with a sinister undertone. Looking back now, it's incredibly cheesy and 'of the time'. So an update was needed and Stephen King has had a huge year; with The Dark Tower, Netflix's Gerald's Game and a new tv series The Mist, he's back in the spotlight.

In the town of Derry, Maine, kids go missing. So much that the rate is six times the national average. One of those kids is Georgie, a little boy who disappeared down the sewers. His brother Bill, has never stopped looking for him. Along with his friends, he plans to search the sewers, hoping to find at least a body. Along with his friends, known as The Losers Club, they make it their mission this summer...but when they find out the answers lead to a child killing clown, their nightmares become a reality.

IT was going to be a big success, but no one anticipated how big a success. After a massive weekend at the box-office, people are looking to be scared again, in R-rated territory no less. The road to the finish line was a long one for the film, with Cary Fukunaga wanting to write and direct. Those plans fell through and his reasons were that the studio wanted to make a generic 'jump scare' film, where he wanted to tell a deeper story about the kids. The finished film, courtesy of Mama director Muschietti manages to balance those two aspects quite well. The decision to split the film in two and use the first half to focus on the kids only was an interesting move and one that let the story breathe a little bit more. We're already being pulled in plenty of directions with the numerous characters, to have to be pulled into their adult version too would be too much.

The story has been "updated" and takes place in the 80's. Hot off the heels of Strangers Things, IT plays into some nostalgia here and it works. The kids look and act the parts very well and all have great chemistry. I was particularly impressed with Sophia Lillis who plays Beverly. She looks like a young Amy Adams and has enough charisma to have a career in the industry. With just enough sass, but obvious fear lurking under the surface, she has the most to engage with. Her nightmare sequence in the bathroom might be a tad bit of overkill and doesn't feel as sinister as the 1990's tv version. Something about the father touching the blood on the sink irks me more from the tv version than him simply not noticing the room completely covered in it in this film. It also makes the 'clean-up' part a little bit less believable here. Bill, our defacto lead character, is tormented by the loss of his little brother, this is his defining characteristic. These two characters get the most attention while we just float around the rest of the kids stories. The one with the least amount of screen time has to be Mike, who is the outsider of the group. These kids made me laugh and made me believe in their friendship, which makes the film work and connect.

Skarsgård had the difficult task of following in Tim Curry's footsteps. He does a really good job with Pennywise though. His otherworldly eyes were not CGI, he managed to move them in different directions himself and his creepy voice added to the sinister feel the character needs. One look at him and some audience members gasped. There are plenty of jump scares and the audience fell for almost every single one. Surprisingly enough, I didn't. I'll fall for a good jump scare any day of the week, but IT failed to get even one out of me. I don't know why, maybe it was the obvious horror beats leading to each one but the film didn't 'get me'. It felt scary, but not once was I scared, if that makes sense. Maybe because the whole film takes place during the daytime it adds a sense of security? I don't know, but plenty of people in the theatre seemed frightened.

Muschietti has a creative eye for the unnatural. Looking over Ben's shoulder in the library and seeing an old lady stare him down without him knowing is effective, as is the use of the stabilizing camera effects on Pennywise's face while everything else shakes wildly. Small camera movements, such as straightening a picture, are done creatively here and add to the immersive feel the film wants. Even though the film feels predictable in the horror beats, with each scare simply leading into more anticipation for the next one, the film as a whole works. IT does a great job of me wanting to see the next chapter.

A Master Builder (2013)
Director: Jonathan Demme
https://i.imgur.com/o4vhFLY.png

Based on an impenetrable play from a hundred plus years ago by Henrik Ibsen, Wallace Shawn translates and adapts a considerably more coherent and juicy screenplay in kahoots with long time collaborator/stage director Andre Gregory, and film director Jonathan Demme.
https://i.imgur.com/i0oqYdE.jpg

The story seems simple but soon turns into a blurred line between dream and reality when an aging architect on his death bed recalls a young woman he promised to steal away like a half mountain creature man when she was old enough to hop into the sack with him. Actually, it's more subtle than that, but not much more.
https://i.imgur.com/FkSFbwZ.jpg

Shawn does a nice stretch as a charismatic yet controlling portrayal of a master architect not ready to accept his fate of being obscured by a young upstart in the field. We spend most of the film in close up, right on the actors faces, and it's a wonderful experience because the acting is the highest form of acting there is. It lives and breathes in the kind of jazz precision we'd get from a well rehearsed ensemble, so much in fact, that the mere positioning of a bow to be stretched back, the simple act of it being an intention and not an action in motion, would have enough force to blow the theater lights out like a flame. Actually, it's not really like that. But it is good. The acting, that is. Who's writing this crap?
Sorry...
https://i.imgur.com/UKpe3xq.jpg

As welcome as Shawn's atypical performance is, it's Julie Hagerty and Lisa Joyce who really impressed me. Joyce's manic laughter turned intense focus and back again really had me on edge, and her delivery of every line was brimming with life and energy. Hagerty really, really goes against her usual typecast with a quietly brooding wife, damaged by her past and holding onto nothing in her current life. She uses her eyes in ways I haven't seen since I don't know when.
https://i.imgur.com/gFaTFtt.jpg

The writing is fantastic. Every word is clear and concise. There are no boastful elaborations or vocabulary gymnastics. The straightforward manner of the dialog, natural performances massaged into truth, cadence and tonality of all of this being manifested, has the same impressive poetry of the most difficult Shakespeare, and even moreso. It's the modern world we are living in, and within this modern world not once are we agitated by self important technology or common bulls eye phrasing. This is all very unpretentious and honest.

Jonathan Demme makes great use of the location we get with Master Builder Halvard Solness's home, and his choice to photograph everything with great detail, serving the performances, really takes this far and away from anything resembling the failure of a filmed play. As noted by many of the production's contemporaries, this is indeed a real film (shot with the Arri Alexa, digitally, of course, alternating between 30fps and 24fps respectively.) The alternating frame rates create the illusion of real life vs dream life, but everything still flows much like a cinema movie including a key scene of a car drive filming the tops of suburban houses and cupolas, as if to indicate a middle class work flow that positions Shawn's Solness character in a bit of a pretense as far as his lofty achievements and goals are concerned. Is this actually the case? Is he a Master Builder, or an architect of middle class housing for "people" to live in? I do not know, but it's an interesting juxtaposition to think about.
https://i.imgur.com/bMvYHxS.jpg

Would it be too bold to say that this is a masterpiece of a film? Maybe. I don't know. I wouldn't want to say just yet. I've seen this twice now, and this last viewing really had me appreciating all the care put into it. It absolutely transported me into another world, and that's what I want when I see a movie. But at the same time, this plays as a documentary of sorts. It's really a unique blend I haven't experienced before.

This is undoubtedly a strange movie, and probably an unlikely scenario to most people's prejudices, but I will say that everyone involved, and I mean everyone involved, sells their role. They are totally committed, as if life itself was to make sure that A Master Builder stood higher in the center of the clouds.

Starship Troopers: Traitor of Mars 6/10

Starship Troopers - Traitor of Mars is an animated film, but the animation is very good quality. Good sequel of original films, sometimes you forget that it's just animation, the characters are very well created. Metamorphosis of the main character goes too fast from the molluscs who get a heart attack - to soldiers who are in the middle of a fight to find time for joking and chatting.
I was very eager to watch this film from a great sentiment to the original series

I used to imagine what Stephen King's IT would look like as a proper movie (none of that 1990 miniseries which sucked). Andres Muschietti's vision isn't exactly what I pictured but thankfully IT still works really well. The exaggerated yet shocking visuals, the kids' performances, Bill Skarsgard performance as Pennywise, the cinemantography and the great attention to detail all make IT a great Stephen King adaption, something to wash away the foul taste of The Dark Tower.

My biggest wish for the sequel is they take a more subtle approach and priortise atmosphere/dread over jump scares which is how I orginally pictured IT in my head.

Kong: Skull Island (2017)

Finally got around to seeing this and I loved it. No surprise there as I'm a giant monster fan, in fact an "any kind of monster" fan, so this was a must for me. I went in with that attitude and "Kong" didn't disappoint. It's not far from most Kong movies with the story of there being a mysterious island that has been located that a main protagonist wants to get to. Although this time it's for a different reason, and one that I thought worked well. The movie is set in 1973 as our involvement in Vietnam is closing down, yet it still has a war-time feel to it. In fact, the greater bulk of the movie was filmed in Vietnam (also Hawaii and Australia) and the vistas are beautiful and add far more than if it had been filmed in a studio setup.

Of course King Kong is the main attraction and I'll get to him, but there are humans here also! :) John Goodman is the "researcher" who talks the government into financing a trek to the hidden island, with added military muscle in the form of Samuel L. Jackson and his platoon of soldiers who were just hours from going back stateside. But Jackson leaps at the chance for "one last mission." Also along are Tom Hiddleston as a tracker of sorts and Brie Larson as an "anti-war" photographer. A ship ferries in dozens of helicopters which carry the company through a storm wall into a peaceful-looking, beautiful island, which they immediately find out is anything but as Kong attacks every helicopter, killing dozens of men and leaving the rest stranded until they can get back to their scheduled extraction point. But things are not as clear as they seem, as other, evil creatures come forth and try to kill everyone.

The actors are all fine, but it's Jackson and John C. Reilly who carry the performance honors. Reilly is found on the island, having lived there since WWII, where he and a Japanese enemy crashed after fighting each other. They became friendly and found a tribe of people who are not native to the island unlike most Kong movies, but as Reilly says, "keep showing up over time." It's this fresh take on the story of Skull Island that helps make the movie seem newer than other Kong movies. Not saying that it's better than the others but is very good and the filmmakers found a reason to not just copy the previous films but to strike out on their own.

Hiddleston is basically the he-man of the movie and Larson is the beautiful lady (there is another beautiful lady on Goodman's team). But Larson is not Kong's love interest thank goodness. Kong is more interested in preserving life and acts as the island's guardian. His reason for attacking the helicopters was because of explosive seismic tracking charges set off, ostensibly, by Goodman's crew to measure the geological value of the island. But Goodman has other motives and Jackson is pissed when he finds out. Soon, it's Jackson going after Kong if you can imagine that.

The special effects are top notch, mixing monsters and people together seamlessly, against the beauty of the jungle and the surrounding mountains. Everything is expertly done and it shows. Be sure and wait for an extra scene before the credits really get rolling. It's essential for the future of the franchise and other films.

The Bye Bye Man

(Stacy Title)

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/b/bd/The_Bye_Bye_Man_poster.jpg/220px-The_Bye_Bye_Man_poster.jpg

1

A clumsy horror film that manages to mash a bunch of ideas from better films into one long drawn out mess that doesn't have enough originality or scares to warrant a watch. The Bye Bye Man is inept, the acting, story, pacing, direction and countless other aspects of the film all work against it, creating a dull experience one should steer clear from.

Elliot, his girlfriend Sasha and his best friend John move into a house not far from their college. It's a fixer-upper, but cheap and big enough that they can throw parties and live comfortably. Elliot finds a drawer with scribbles inside; "Don't think it, Don't say it" over and over. He tears away at it to reveal the name 'The Bye Bye Man' written underneath. During a seance, cause why not, he mentions the name. Now the legend has come to claim him and anyone else who has learned his name. The only way to stop this curse, is to stop the spread of people knowing his name.

This quasi Candyman update, has one thing going for it, Doug Jones. The go to man for lanky and creepy characters under heavy make-up effects. He does nothing here and that is the best part. Just stand in the corner here, point towards the camera there and you have the best performance in the film. The three teenagers are generic enough that they could be from any teen horror film at any point in time. Nothing they do stands out as interesting or worth paying attention to. If the job of the film was for me to not give a crap about these characters, mission accomplished. The script doesn't help them either as it meanders around in useless circles, not explaining things and lazily entertaining the idea of cheap thrills.

Stacy Title, the director, doesn't try to offer up any new scares and relies on the tired and cliché acts. Door opens here slowly, slams shut there quickly, noise here, shadow there...blah blah blah. Even the death scenes are bland. One sequence comes to mind when a character is in the passenger seat and sees a car accident on the side of the road. She yells at the driver to pull over so she can help the family in need. The driver yells back that she is hallucinating (you hallucinate things when you hear or say his name) but she runs after them anyway. The accident is next to train tracks and a train just so happens to be coming by. The conductor slams on his breaks well before she gets to the tracks. Once she gets there, she immediately stops, turns to the train and stares at it for a good few seconds before being struck. What? Also, when a guy with a gun is chasing after you and you run inside your house, maybe lock your door? Sure he can blow it open or kick it down, but at the very least lock the damn door. We as humans have mastered the ability to turn a door knob and enter a room. Ugh.

Maybe the biggest mistake the film suffers from is a lack of mythology to the titled character. At least give us something to dive into or be interested in. Who is he, what is he, why does he do what he does, why is there a dog? I think the filmmakers were of the thought that the unknown is scarier....no....it's just irritating.

I didn't really like this all that much. The best thing about the film was definitely the visuals - those Utah landscapes were beautiful to look at. The story itself had some good potential but it didn't exactly go where I hoped it would, and fizzled out disappointingly toward the end. I also thought it was overly melodramatic at times - in a corny way, and the soundtrack was kinda cheesy, to be honest.

The garden of stones - Baghé sangui (Parviz Kimiavi, 1976) 2.5

Very austere and monochromatic, dull-looking mix of documentary and drama that explores the fascinating -on paper- life of Darvish Khan Esfandiarpoor and his decision to build a garden of stones. The result evokes far more indifference than it should, but it had the potential to deliver something really immersive and/or mystical and there's some traces of that. Not enough to make this experience less of a forgettable curiosity, though.

Hidden Figures

(Theodore Melfi)

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/4/4f/The_official_poster_for_the_film_Hidden_Figures%2C_2016.jpg

3

Hidden Figures is such a generic and non-memorable movie that I'm not shocked it was nominated for an Oscar. The thing about it is, it hits the right notes; which are very by the numbers. The film doesn't try to do too much, but tell a simple story of some pretty amazing people, but I didn't get to experience the struggle that much.

Hidden Figures tells the story of three African American women working for NASA during the space race, who try to navigate their way through racism and sexism to reach their goals of being treated equal.

Trying to tell 3 different biopics wrapped into one story might be difficult. Anyone of these ladies could have had their 'own' movie, but the film clearly favours Taraji P. Henson's mathematician Katherine Johnson. She's a genius, but will she ever have the chance to prove it to a white male dominated society? Once she is given that chance, she finds racist hurdles to overcome, she can't even go to the bathroom in the building she works at because it's designated whites only. While a truly sad thing to think about, the film unwittingly turns it into a piece of comedy when Kevin Costner smashes the 'Coloured' bathroom signs and tells people to pee wherever they want; "Here at NASA, we all pee the same colour". What a silly line to say and destroys any sense of human triumph that came before it.

Janelle Monáe plays Mary Jackson, whose story could also be a film on its own. Her storyline feels separate from the other two and ultimately feels short shifted because of that fact. Octavia Spencer is the third woman, Dorothy Vaughan, who sees an opportunity to learn about this new thing called an IBM computer and get a step ahead of the white women. She has a really great line that she delivers to Kirsten Dunst who says "Despite what you may think, I have nothing against y'all", Spencer's reply is simply "I know you probably believe that.”

The film isn't the in your face racism that we're really accustomed to. There is no KKK, burning crosses, hard language thrown towards people, but subtle racism behind a fearful exterior. That line I mentioned earlier encapsulates it. Asking a black woman why she is in a certain section of the library and not her own 'designated' area, then getting them thrown out when they say that their section doesn't have a particular book is a perfect scene to show what type of people we were, not so long ago. I appreciated this aspect to the story telling and it was probably the highlight of a really generic and by the numbers bio-drama.

I have never held the oscars in much regard, but that has to be the worst film I've ever seen nominated for an oscar. There was not one redeemable quality. Nice to see a bunch of Swedes all together (yay, Fares Fares!!!), but uh, ultimately quite "meh". It just made me want to watch Citizen X, tbh.

That's a shame. What a stellar line up. I love Fares Fares.

I love Paddy Considine, but that wasn't premium Considine. Fares was one of the better things about the movie.

"Child of God" 2014. James Franco film adaptation of a Cormack McCarthy novel. Pretty disturbing stuff, guy goes mental, retreats from society and gradually gets more debased. Have to say that I liked this, enjoy is the wrong word. The main actor (Scott Haze) did an amazing job. Got the recommendation on here, would like to try other similar movie experiences (apart from watching the main actor dropping a log :)) 7/10.

Hidden Figures was nominated for an oscar?

I have never held the oscars in much regard, but that has to be the worst film I've ever seen nominated for an oscar. There was not one redeemable quality. The acting, cinematography, script, music, and directing were all unremarkable if not utterly horrible. What a garbage film. 3 stars was generous Suspect.

It was nominated for 3.

Best Supporting Actress

Good Review US. I'm with you as I found this biopic had no teeth, really. It was pleasant enough though, but seemed like it had a child audience in mind. Which isn't a bad idea really. I could see this film being shown in schools as an inspiring influence. Considering all the racial stuff going on these days, it was probably the best way to handle it.

That being said, I would like to see the Tarantino remake where those 3 women take back NASA. The hard way.

Hidden Figures was a 2016 Best Picture nominee and Octavia Spencer was nominated for Supporting Actress...I can see Spencer's nomination but I really don't understand the Best Picture nomination.

I watched this because it has appeared on the 40's countdown. It's less than an hour an 20 minutes long and is a very nice watch. I thought it was creepy and macabre, yet I don't think you need to be a horror movie fan to enjoy it. Boris Karloff was great but I didn't get much from Bela Lugosi. I was surprised at how good the movie looked and how well done it was overall.

Cat, I pretty much agree with you although I gave it half a popcorn bag more because of the star wattage. Still, here's what I said about the film when I reviewed it a good ways back:

...And it drags. At 137 minutes, it could have used some trimming. I mean, it seems like less than a third of the movie is even dedicated to catching the killer. We are shown the killer about two-thirds of the way through but never get to know him much as a character (not that you'd want to know a child killer!), but in a movie like this, the success lies a lot on the evil of the character and the need for the audience to see him punished. But the director takes us in all sorts of different directions and the movie ends up really being about the characters played by Hardy, Rapace, and Kinnaman and the resolution to the case of the killer is almost an afterthought. Love the whole cast, especially Hardy but man, this show is heavy-going.

Okay, this is less impressive than the previous two, but it's substantially different as well. While The plea and The wishing tree were dramas, here we have a comedic fable filled with absurd and naivety. It is not hilarious, heck, even at times the comedy really falls flat, but it's really endearing to watch, colorful and enthusiastic. This was some really good fun and a joy to watch, though probably too light-hearted to be memorable. The music is amazing.

Move over Zuckerberg, there is a new jerk in town. Now I know Ray Kroc was around long before the Berg, but I didn't know his story. It appears that to make it in America, you need to steal the ideas of originators, pass it off as your own and make it grow. The Founder is a bio-pic that has a little more bite than the last bio-pic I watched, Hidden Figures. Despite the warm and friendly glow of the cinematography, the film is a look at the sinister persistence of one man who let greed get to his head and essentially make him a monster. How much of it is true, I do not know.

Ray Kroc is a sleazy salesman going from drive in to drive in hoping to sell some machines for a quick buck. It's not looking too good for him, until he receives a call for 6 of his mixers. Shocked, he decides to go see this little burger joint and discovers the birth of a giant. McDonald's, the worlds first fast food restaurant. Your food; burgers, fries and a drink in under 30 seconds...for 35 cents no less. He knows this is a game changer and he has to be a part of it, the trouble is the two brothers who run the place. They would rather run one perfect burger joint, than dozens of mediocre ones.

There is a moment in the film where I said to myself; "Now that is cold" and it was when Ray and his wife are at the dinner table and he casually says "I want a divorce". This comes a few scenes after he flirts with another man's wife too. It seems that Ray is a man of desire, what he wants, he is determined to get. He wants McDonald's and spoiler alert, he gets it. He wants a new wife, he gets it. Keaton delivers a performance of empathy at first, but it soon evolves into apathy. So much so, that when a journalist wants to interview him to get his story for the success of McDonald's, he simply hands him a card and walks away telling him to call the office. He never even looks at the guy, which is the exact opposite during the beginning of the film when he was the one begging for people to pay attention to him so he can make a sale.

Nick Offerman and John Carroll Lynch play the naive and gullible brothers. They have a business that works and they wanted to keep it working. Making this deal was a dream for them, but the dream became a nightmare. When the sale at the end of the film is taking place and they are granted 1% of the company based on a handshake and not a signed contract, you can tell the look of defeat on John Carroll Lynch's face. He seems to have accepted the fact that they won't win. They do it anyway. The film is very much about Kroc, the brother's play background characters that seem to be disappointed and unsatisfied with every step Kroc takes. More salt in the wound is when Kroc opens up a McDonald's across the street from their burger joint. Cold as ice.

The film fumbles the female characters here. His wife, played by Laura Dern, does nothing but look depressed the whole time. She is shocked and saddened by his divorce announcement, but maybe it's for the best since she clearly does not look happy with him. He is perfectly fine giving up the house, the car, everything except the company. He would rather die than give her one share of McDonald's. I don't know what she did to deserve that, but it further cements the fall into the greed cycle that Kroc finds himself in. Kroc's personal life doesn't seem to be of any interest to Hancock, but we spend quite a bit of time with it.

The Founder is a decent movie, overshadowed by a great performance. The film doesn't keep up with Keaton and I think the script deserved someone with a little bit more edginess than the director of The Blind Side and Saving Mr. Banks. Hancock's films are too nice, this story was mean.

Marvin's Room - 7.5/10

When I saw that this had an 80% on RT, but only a 62% Audience, I thought I had to watch this again. We had this movie, I saw it at around 16, and liked it then, probably liked it more..

The story is real good, very good relationships among the characters... Of course, BECAUSE it was good, it lost 11 million, even though it had a cast of Meryl Streep, Leonardo DiCaprio, Diane Keaton, Robert DeNiro..

The Ninth Configuration (1972)

I'm pretty sure it'll be a while before I see something like this again! Its labelled as horror comedy which for me was misleading. Granted, there is humour, sometimes downright hilarious but it is fairly dark and in essence, tragic. The acting was very good, particularly Stacy Keach and Ed Flanders and some of the dialogue was surprisingly great for the type of movie I was expecting. Id recommend first time viewers to go in blind like I did, as its a real mixed bag, with parts becoming philosophical whilst others flat out crazy! Especially the bar scene!!
