- One of the most badass cinematic experience ever. Keanu Reeves is just a beast this guy is astounding is so many ways and he make his own stunts. I hope I could be that badass at 54 years old (I can dream). Storyline is pretty simple but the choregraphy and the fighting scenes are amazing. I want moreeeeeee and I can't wait for the 4th one. Love it.

This isnt the best version of Arthur and his knights but damn I love the choice of actors. At the time of the film, all but Clive Owen and Keira Knightly, were new upcoming actors to American cinema. My heart <3 goes to Mads and Stellan.
Us (2019) N
Watched this couple of days ago but had to give it some time to figure out my rating. For the most part I liked it quite a bit but there are elements that annoyed me immensily (e.g. the explanation of events and the way film got almost goofy at times). There are also moments that seem to scream "Look at me, I'm artsy" and serve no other function.
On the plus side the visuals are good, it kinda has that twisted nightmare feel to it, it's somewhat unpredictable at times and lots of great little moments every now and then. During these two days Us has certainly grown on me. I'm still little unsure of the rating but considering how I've again started to lean too much towards the low end I'll round this one up.

Vampire Circus (1972) r
Mediocre Hammer horror that has some good and maybe even little ambitious scenes but around those good moments it's very standard and somewhat dull. I wonder if the original uncut version would have been better but as far as I know it no longer exists.

The Man Who Feels No Pain (Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota): A fun Bollywood action-comedy about a man who was born with a rare genetic condition that allows him to feel absolutely no pain. As a boy, his grandfather turns him onto VHS movies of action films and it is when our hero Surya sees Mani, a one-legged karate master, beat 100 men in a Kumite, Surya is determined to be a martial arts hero...with hilarious and disastrous results. Some the gags are quite funny and the action, choreographed by the awesome American duo of Eric Jacobus and Dennis Ruel, is exciting to watch. Some of the moves are repetitive, but who cares? This is overall a funny action film and I enjoyed it.

I really struggled with this in the beginning, mostly with the secondary storylines that went back in time. Then again, I haven't been watching many movies lately because my focus and motivation aren't what they normally are. The result is that I'm probably overrating my overall viewing experience, but I think the movie is deserving of at least that rating. After the rough start everything started to work for me, and I always enjoyed the most modern tale. The spectacle of the rest became just too grand to not be taken by it, and what once seemed like a chore to get through suddenly felt like a movie moving at breakneck speed. It's certainly a movie with something to say, even if I'm not sure how profound the final result is. I do appreciate the effort with that and I'm certain there was plenty I missed.

Theodore Huff, one of the 20th Century's premiere film historians, stated that Intolerance was the only film up to that time which deserved to be considered equal to Beethoven's 5th Symphony, and Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel as an artistic achievement. The film was way ahead of it's time in 1916, and it's still a little ahead of it's time. One of Griffith's masterpieces.

The movie that put Tim Burton on the map and proved that Johnny Depp was an actor to be reckoned with...Burton's mad genius is in serious overdrive here and the color schemes document an eye for color that rivals Vincente Minnelli...and Kathy Baker is a total scene-stealer in this movie.

I've watched this movie many times. I like the premise of the movie and the characters and their interactions. The movie suffers a great deal from an over-abundance of poor-quality CGI. Only the lighting seemed really good (a glowing effect on faces and hair). The movie might have been better either as an animated film, or if it had been done later with better CGI. I really enjoyed it's era, with the art deco and pulp feel of it.

This is being reviewed better than Bohemian Rhapsody. Taron Egerton is apparently better than Malek in his role. Yet, traditional award movies don't usually get released in this window.
I wonder if this is more counter-programming to all of the summer fluff.

There are certainly fewer lame moments than in Bohemian Rhapsody, the film embracing a sort of musical/fantasy approach for some of the time helps. But it is very similar in a lot of ways. Taron Egerton is fine, but his performance didn't really stand out as award-worthy.

I'm surprised by the amount of praise this has been getting. I found it totally predictable and cliché, the dialogue was at times awful and the worst was watching Vince Vaughan try and fight like an ex boxer! Honestly, they might as well have used footage of Frankenstein fighting. His punches were so slow he was almost going backwards!
So much of it didn't really make that much sense to me but it had enough violence (which at times was poorly done) to keep me from turning it off.

The Physician
(2013)
4/5
You enjoyed The Physician more than did I, SL. The picture is definitely a throw back to the epics that were made in the '50s and early '60s. And had I seen it then I'd probably have liked it more.
I've always believed that the best length for a commercial motion picture is 2 to 2-/12 hours. If there's not enough meat in the story to fill up that amount of time, then why bother? So in that regard "TP" was good. And the technical stuff was all first rate: costuming, photography, and props/settings. But the film was not weighty enough to warrant its run time.
To be sure, S. Skaarsgard as The Barber, and B. Kingsley as the famous physician, Ibn Sina were commendable, especially Skaarsgard. But even the great Kingsley could not save this lightweight script.
Tom Payne as the lead, and Emma Rigby as the love interest were not effective in their roles. Whether it was their lack of depth, or whether it was the writing, it's hard to say. However it's doubtful that these roles are going to cause people to flock to their follow-up films, although there may be some appeal for the puberty/adolescent audience. Even the film score was not memorable, although it might have been dragged down by the ineffectual writing.
As a period piece it was interesting, as was the historic references to the development of medical practitioners, but The Physician was all smoke and no fire.

A blot in the Takeshi Kitano copybook in my estimation. Predictable storyline and whereas his normal long shots and sparse dialogue lead to interest they just seem there for style reasons here. it's not awful, it's watcheable, it's just not that good. Omar Epps is fine as are the rest of the cast. I read that "Beat" was unhappy with the finished article and I can believe it but the truth is he probably wanted bigger exposure and was willing to compromise for that.

But I suspect in comparison that Vaughn more than made up for "99" in Dragged Across Concrete. I thought his work was top shelf in that role.

A shame you didn’t like it. I really enjoy this director’s films. And I thought Vaughn was pretty great. Took me 20 minutes or so to adapt to his new look and style, but it worked for me...
The violence is done intentionally bad though. Zahler’s work are clearly grindhouse-ish inspired b-flicks with some pulp mixed into it. I would say it’s definitely an acquired taste though. Very heavy on style.

There is nothing I don't love about Cuba.
We Cubans can be thankful, I don't know, to the Man up there... that we are the way we are. If we cared about possessions, we would have disappeared long ago. But we Cubans are very fortunate. We're a small country. But we're very strong. We've learned how to resist... the good and the bad.

Happy you enjoy Tomahawk at least!
Yeah, I think it’s pretty good but Concrete is definitely his most polarizing yet. I have no idea if you’ll like it or hate it. I was disappointed but maybe it’ll grow on me. I think though that if you have a problem with his dialogue or more self-indulging aspects you’ll probably not like Concrete.
It’s really long but If you prepare yourself I think you’ll have a fine enough time If you are willing to embrace it. But yeah I don’t know.... it really feels like Zahler trying to make a cult classic gritty cop movie but the ambitious nature kinda falls down several places. As you can here I really don’t know how I feel about it yet. In one way it’s awful. In another it feels like something greater. Who knows.

The Highwaymen (2019)
Due to the mediocre to poor reviews, and with some trepidation, we screened The Highwaymen. Surprise and appreciation gradually grew as the film went along. This is actually a pretty good movie.
The chief strong point was the first rate acting by Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson. They not only worked well together, but separately they looked and acted their parts convincingly. Particularly enjoyable were a few of Harrelson's light comedy lines. But they both felt like grizzled ex Texas Rangers who were determined to eradicate Bonnie and Clyde.
The settings and feel of the 1930s was palpable-- a neat trick in the 21st Century. So many films of that era are too glossy and trite. It really felt like we were glimpsing true life in 1934. So the props and settings people were outstanding. Ditto for the photography. Thomas Newman's score was tasteful, and resisted any tendency to caricature the era with overwrought hillbilly music.
A minor detraction was Kathy Bates' casting, and her dialogue, as Texas Governor "Ma" Ferguson. It's true that Ferguson was governor, following her governor husband's conviction of corruption charges, but the real life "Ma" was much different in looks and personality. John Carol Lynch did a jounryman's job as Feguson's advisor.
It's likely that some of the negative reviews stemmed from the love of the Beatty, Dunaway, Hackman, Parsons film Bonnie and Clyde. Those of us who were blown away in 1967 with that milestone film came away feeling that B & C were heroes, and were unfairly gunned down. Yet it's also true that they were vicious psychopathic killers-- a point that was adequately driven home in "Highwaymen". But that lingering impression probably influenced some of the older reviewers.
The violent demise of these two historical gangsters was a forgone conclusion, and was addressed accurately in the film. It was interesting that no screen time was given to the pair of outlaws, except at a distance, and then only to establish their ruthlessness. Kudos to Emily Brobst and Edward Bossert who played the pair; and for their good work in the final scene.
Doc's rating: 7/10

I know these places and these people, Mullen is simply heartbreaking as the alcoholic trying to make the best of things. Acting-wise, for me, this is up there with Loach's best productions. Its affecting and also poignant. Drawing into the mixture what one is doing for oneself to feel better. Rather than the good deeds one seems to be doing for others. Billy Elliots Dad is good in it too :)

This is why Korean cinema is the best in the world. The movie goes from bumbling gangster fun to utter emotional devastation within an hour.
It's a film that just gets better and better until the viewer is left to pick up the pieces in a stupour. A quite amazing performance by Choi min-Sik..I thought he was brilliant in Oldboy, then I saw this.
Two tragic characters that barely cross paths, are at the centre of an extremely simple tale that is just crushed by Director Hye-sung Song. He absolutely smashes it out of the park. Korean cinema does that better than any other - makes beautiful, heartfelt tales out of simple plots.
There are some flaws - mainly actions by periphery characters. But it doesn't affect the flow and tone of this beautiful film.

A couple different directions to go with this rating... If you are looking for a good movie, look elsewhere. It's too long and takes awhile to gather steam. If you are just looking for a fun time, this is pretty cool to watch but there are too many lulls to be worth a rewatch in the future.
The Perfection (2018) N
Other than acting (which was pretty good) The Perfection felt quite amateurish. Before the first "twist" I was hoping it wouldn't be what it was but of course it was (actually it's pretty much the same with the second "twist" too). I'm under impression there's been some hype around this but I don't see any reason for that. A bit like New French Extremism but without the extremity.

Oasis (2002)
What a brilliant film and an amazing story. Performance by So-ri Moon who's character has severe cerebral palsy, is honestly astonishing. One of the best Korean films I've seen so far.
rating_4_5
WOW! I took your recommendation and watched Oasis last night. It's easily one of the best films I've experienced in the past couple of years. I can see why this film won so many awards, and in specific how the female lead, So-ri Moon, won the Marcello Mastroianni award at Venice!
Ironically I almost bailed after the first 5-10 minutes, thinking that I had no interest in a tale about some simpleton. But all of a sudden the story drew me in, and by the time he encountered the disabled girl, I was hooked.
It's not my usual cup of tea to volunteer for emotional connection with sorrowful or unfortunate characters. But Moon's overwhelming portrayal of Gong-ju Han, a young woman with severe spastic cerebral palsy who has been more or less banished to a small apartment by her family so that her brother can cheat the welfare system, grabbed me pretty hard.
The other breathtaking performance was by Kyung-gu Sol, who plays a mentally disabled free spirit who was just released from penitentiary for a crime he didn't commit, but who seeks out the family of the person killed in an auto accident by his brother. In a way Sol's portrayal was even more invested than was Moon's.
The actions of each of the pair, along with their interactions together, are some of the finest and most moving portrayals that I've seen.
The writing and direction by Chang-dong Lee is of the highest caliber, as is the film's immediate supporting cast. My only minor detraction would be the ending, which could have been resolved differently, but yet was acceptable. In fact one could imagine a sequel, but since the film was from 2002, that's very unlikely.
Based on this work, I'll be investigating other pictures by Lee, Moon and Sol.
I agree with your rating, SL: 9/10 from me.

Is it? I don't agree, but is just an opinion.
I start to see the decay of a good project, a project started by the Castro's and there supporters. A project that only endured for so many years because Cuba doesn't have the oil resources most South American countries have. A project that gives a example to the world what health care, education and science should be all about. A society without competition that originated poets on the loose, what we should all be, not a piston easily replaceable competing for everything we do.

Honestly I have been putting away watching it until now as I find zombie movies very repetitive.
After watching it I feel split - was it scary? No.
I liked the acting though I found Cillian Murphy very convincing as a lead role - up until he turned into a ninja in the last 20 minutes of the film
All in all I'd give it a 2.5 out of 5 as a passable movie, and credits here for being so low budget - maybe if I had watched it earlier in the 2000s I'd find it better or perhaps it has not aged well.

My fifth film by Asghar Farhadi was a bit of a disappointment. I might have changed as a viewer, but i actually loved the hyped A Separation from 2011, but with Everbody Knows i fell set back to a generic psychological drama from Hollywood. All in all it fell too constructed with in my opinion to much drama and plot twists.

I never saw this short by Lloyd. I'll have to check it out. But judging from the poster picture, this may be where he got the idea for his iconic Safety Last (1923) a couple of years later, which is one of his best. That's the one where he's seemingly hanging off the hands of a big clock 7 stories above the street.
Haven't seen The Freshman either, although the description doesn't sound too fascinating. But I think you'd like Safety Last. Hope so, anyway.

'Christmas in August' (1998)
Directed by Jin-ho Hur
https://i.imgur.com/DTASQIo.gif
Yet another Korean drama. This one is highly regarded among many critics as being one of the finest Korean films of all time, and I can see why.
The film centres around Jung Won, a terminally ill man determined to enjoy his last moments of life. What we see is very minimalistic, with no obvious pointers as to needless melodramatic moments. Instead, Director Jin-ho Hur just uses simple short scenes and slices of time to convey Jung Won's love for Da-rim - a girl who appears in his life. The two share casual moments, no big sweeping love scenes. They don't even declare their feelings for each other - but we see the pain Jung Won is feeling, a couple of times in the movie. He tells nobody of his condition. He just wants to try and be good to people and enjoy the rest of his time. And the way Da-rim helps with this is very moving.
The first half is almost glacial in pace, but all the while showing the viewer how Jung Won is preparing and coping. There's barely a word uttered in the last 15 minutes of the film, yet it is heart-aching in it's beauty, and what is left unspoken is brilliantly played out on screen. It's a love story in essence, but it's also about death and closure.
This film won't be for everybody, due to it's pacing, sparse dialogue and vagueness. But it ends up being a really rewarding 90 minutes and a must watch for any fan of Asian cinema.

Few of the teen movies from the 80's so accurately captured real teen angst the way this one did...Blaine, Andy, and Duckie also clocked in at #1 on my favorite romantic triangles list. Annie Potts steals every scene she's in.

Woody Allen's dark tale of lust, betrayal, and self-preservation is one of his edgiest films. An ugly story mounted on a gorgeous canvas...the on location photography is gorgeous and don't be distracted by the British accents...these are the same twisted characters that you expect from the Woodmeister often doing serious dirt. Jonathan Rhys Meyers is effectively cast against type and I think this is Scarlett Johansson's best performance. This one actually gets me angry and the ending is a real ballbreaker, but it's absolutely riveting. Woody's Oscar-nominated screenplay is one of his best.

Affecting tale of a couple who love each other but seem on a downward spiral. Realistic and well written but, dare I say it, not that original. Another slight moan is that the back stories were not fleshed out enough (that could be as we only should see them as they see each other, I dunno).
David Dastmalchian's expressions give me the fear!

How silly. They never thought to just say he's like a mythological hydra from the outset. Gigan was my favourite in the original films :).

In fairness...
they don't refer to him as a hydra until after he's lost and grown back one of his heads, otherwise he's just a three-headed dragon
but yeah, that's a distracting detail. Then again, they really are coasting on the whole "let them fight" thing so who gives a damn.

Big Brother (Kam Ka-Wai, 2018): Donnie Yen takes a bit of a different route with this film. It's more Dangerous Minds combined with three action scenes. It's great to see Yen do something aside from his usual action routine and this has some heartwarming AND heartbreaking moments as well.

Mollywood (Morocco Vaughn, 2019): This directorial debut from music video director Vaughn has quite an interesting premise. On Chicago's mean streets, a serial killer disguises himself as a drug dealer and targets addicts through the use of a new drug he created. Meanwhile, a cop thinks the murders are connected to his brother's death and it prompts him to go after the local drug dealers in hopes to find the killer. Interesting visuals and in a twist, the serial killer himself is the narrator of the film.

Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale (2017) - First Time on Hulu rating_4_5
So, I recently finished seasons 1-2 of the SAO series on Netflix and decided to go check this one out. Like the two seasons that came before it, and arguably even more so, Ordinal Scale is rock-solid. It has a good story infused with enough mystery and and enough action, making it engrossing, so much more than you'd expect from a film about a video game, enough that its two-hour length isn't even within shouting distance of being a chore to sit through. The buildup is just amazing. A great cast of characters, the same characters the viewer becomes invested in over the first two seasons, helps, too. There's also the stunning animation and Yoki Kajiura's excellent musical score doesn't hurt, either. We also get a great English dub from Aniplex that features much of the same cast who dubbed the series. Bryce Papenbrook is once again excellent as Kazuto "Kirito" Kirigaya, an SAO survivor who, like in the series, serves as the main protagonist and also sets out to find out why SAO survivors are having their memories stolen. Minako Aino/Sailor Venus herself Cherami Leigh is also excellent as Asuna Yuuki, another SAO survivor who is now Kirito's girlfriend and pushes the plot forward when she forgets everything about SAO. Michelle Ruff also returns as Shino "Sinon" Asada ("There's no honor in murder! That's chicken s--t!"), who made her debut in season 2's Death Gun arc. Just for good measure, Kirk Thornton who voiced several characters in both dubs of The Castle of Cagliostro (and even the villain Count Cagliostro himself in the Manga dub) returns as Ryotaro "Klein" Tsuboi, as does Patrick Seitz as Andrew Gilbert "Agil" Mills, and we also get Colonel Shikishima himself Jamieson Price as newcomer Dr. Tetsuhiro Shigemura, all of whom are also excellent. All the side characters and such are also up to par and the dub script is completely natural. This one's a winner for sure; I'm definitely looking forward to season three.

InuYasha: Affections Touching Across Time (2001) - First Time on Netflix rating_4
Okay, so, it's not quite up there with the series' best episodes - there were a couple of times where it felt like maybe the story was padded just to reach 100 minutes and Menomaru isn't quite as threatening a villain as Naraku, at least not until the second half - but it's still solid. The InuYasha gang's battle against evil is a compelling one regardless. Kaoru Wada's musical score is still a perfect match. These characters are still so very entertaining to watch and easy to become invested in. The story is good in spite of its flaws. Of course, this being InuYasha, the animation is also up to par. The English dub is also a good one. Like Ordinal Scale and SAO, much of the cast that dubbed the InuYasha series has returned for this movie. Ranma Saotome himself Richard Cox is once again excellent as InuYasha, as are Moneca Stori as Kagome, Ukyo Kuonji herself Kelly Sheridan as Sango, Kirby Morrow as Miroku, Pam Hyatt as Kaede, and Willow Johnson as Kikyo. Vincent Gale isn't quite so threatening as Menomaru until the second half, but again, that's how the character is written rather than a criticism to place at Gale's doorstep. Venus Terzo, in quite the departure from her turn as Ranma's female half, is appropriately threatening as Ruri, one of Menomaru's lackeys who is all-too advanced in duplication magic and even copies the wind tunnel that Naraku cursed all the males in Miroku's family to bear. Everyone else is also good and the dub script is completely natural. With all that said, Affections Touching Across Time is solid and any InuYasha fan should watch it for sure.

'Starfish' (2018)
Directed by Al White
https://i.imgur.com/xkjj8nq.gif
Drama / sci-fi / soft horror. It looks fantastic. Sounds fantastic. But it's just soooo ambitious it sort of crumples beneath the weight of it's own determination.
Youngster Aubrey is grieving for the loss of her best friend. Throughout the film we see her state of mind question everything, ask for forgiveness and come to terms with death, and the apocalypse. First time Director Al White does a very decent job considering his day job is being in a band. He also wrote the screenplay and provided the score. Presumably he chose the music needle drops too as there are some fine entries (Granddaddy, Sigur Ros etc) The set design and shot composition really is something to write home about. Cinematographer Alberto Bañares does a great job of putting us inside Aubrey's head. Some of the scenery and images really reminded me of 'Buster's Mal Heart' . It's like a Brit Marling / Shane Carruth mashup film.
The problem is, the connection between the sci-fi and the reality was too much of a jump. The last act is tough to follow and make sense of. Plus there are a few predictable jump scares. There are metaphors about metaphors, and one massive meta moment, that made me say WTF out loud.
That said, while this might not be the most straightforward film, it is more interesting and curious than alot being made. So I hope the Director does more as he clearly has talent. And the little turtle guy is really cute. Want one.

The Catcher Was a Spy(2018)
This is one of those stranger-than-fiction true stories which really grabs a viewer's attention. Moe Berg was a retired major league baseball player, and who was also highly educated and multi lingual. He ended up working for the OSS (precursor to the CIA) in WWII, where he was tasked with meeting the top German scientist, Werner Heisenberg, who was thought to be working on producing an atom bomb for the Nazis. If found to be true, Berg was told to kill him.
The film has a veteran cast, including Paul Giamatti, Paul Rudd, Tom Wilkinson, Shea Whigham, and Jeff Daniels.
The plot certainly holds one's interest, but either the direction by Ben Lewin was lackluster, or the screenplay from the 1994 novel of the same name by Nicholas Dawidoff was slightly shallow. It seems to me that the film could have had a little more heft, although it was fascinating nonetheless. The subject alone would sustain even a lesser film.

InuYasha: The Castle Beyond the Looking Glass (2002) - First Time on Netflix rating_4_5
If the first one was pretty good, the second is even better. The Castle Beyond the Looking Glass never drags, the action is thrilling as always, Princess Kaguya is every bit Naraku's equal right from the very first second she is on-screen, and it also informs the show's lore by depicting how the InuYasha gang first meets Akitoki Hojo, who is an ancestor to one of Kagome's classmates. Kaoru Wada provides the musical score once more, again with excellent results. The story is a step up and the animation follows suit. The English dub is once again excellent. Richard Cox is excellent as InuYasha, Moneca Stori is pitch-perfect as Kagome, Kelly Sheridan is great as Sango, and so are Kirby Morrow as Miroku and Jillian Michaels as Shippo, as well as Willow Johnson as Kikyo. Nicole Oliver is suitably evil and threatening as Princess Kaguya, who Miroku's grandfather sealed into a mirror. It's interesting to note that Kagura (Janyce Jaud) suggests that maybe this Kaguya killed the "real" Princess Kaguya and stole her body since this is certainly not the same character Chloë Grace Moretz would later voice in Isao Takahata's The Tale of the Princess Kaguya. Matt Smith is also excellent as the klutzy and somewhat ditzy Hojo whose family Miroku's grandfather entrusted with safeguarding an item Kaguya wants. Everyone else is also excellent and the dub script is completely natural. It's everything an InuYasha fan could ask for.

Godzilla King of the Monster 2
Massive step down from Kong Skull Island, actually I was frustrated with the choices Michael Dougherty made with this installment. One character from Kong Skull Island returns as an older version of said character but it's only a cameo. Meanwhile the heavy of the cast is Charles Dance who plays a disillusioned British ex-patriot, who for some reason can't be James Conrad the disillusion expat from Kong Skull Island.
Millie Bobbi Brown is very good however her parents are the two dead tires of the plot. Unfortunately this is a main cast of 12 (and a supporting group that pushes it up to 20) and only about a quarter of the main ones end up dying, deaths that are fairly absurd. It's a little sad when you care more about Mothra than any of the humans or you leave the theater wistfully thinking about how well The Meg developed their characters.
Still I did enjoy the visuals and the fights it doesn't quite look as good as Kong Skull Island and it's action scenes aren't as inspired as Godzilla (2015) but when we do get the fights and the action scenes they look fantastic.

Great to hear you loved it as much as I did doc! You are much better at detailing the movie than I would ever be so I am glad you posted this. With regards the ending, I didn't think Lee would go that route but am actually glad he did. For me it signalled a bit of hope. What would you have went for?

Re: Oasis (2002). Thanks for the compliment. But it's not hard to be detailed. Just pick out things you like or don't like, and explain why.
As far as the ending, I grew up in the "they lived happily thereafter" era, and to this day I much prefer endings that are uplifting and satisfying. Not sure what I'd like to have seen with Oasis. Definitely the two being together as a couple, although there would be certain practical considerations. She's in the main unable to take care of herself, and the guy is a simpleton. But as long as he could hold down a job, they could make it. I know: schmaltz...:)

InuYasha: Swords of an Honorable Ruler (2003) - First Time on Netflix rating_4_5
The third doesn't disappoint, either. Much like The Castle Beyond the Looking Glass before it, Swords of an Honorable Ruler never drags, the action is as thrilling as ever, the demon sword So'unga is a properly threatening villain from the beginnging in that it wants to destroy the world, possesses InuYasha for a time and reanimates a corpse to get it riled up against InuYasha and Sesshomaru, and it also provides some backstory on InuYasha and Sesshomaru's father who we don't know much about in the series aside from the stories other characters tell about him. The conflicted relationship between InuYasha and his older brother always made for good plot fodder in the series and that's the case here, too. With that in mind, the story is up to par without a doubt, exploring what it means to be brothers, how a son sees his father, and what it means to be family. In an interesting way, it posits that man is "more greedy and arrogant than any other creature" but also celebrates the human spirit when InuYasha, who once wanted so badly to become a full demon, later posits that this is why humans refuse to give up and that the human blood running through his veins is why he himself will never give up. Wada's musical score is, of course, amazing and the animation is amazing. The English dub is another good one. The principal cast is once again excellent, from Cox as InuYasha and Stori as Kagome to Sheridan as Sango and Morrow as Miroku to Michaels as Shippo. Cox and Sheridan's fellow Ranma ½ alumni Soun Tendo (father of Akane) himself David Kaye is also excellent as Sesshomaru, InuYasha's older brother who is jealous of InuYasha for the fact their father left InuYasha the Tetsusaiga, the sword that can take out 100 enemies with the Wind Scar, and has told Naraku many times that, "I've never considered that half-demon my brother." Yeah, he's clearly in denial. Want proof? Just watch the scene where he risks his own neck to block an attack meant for InuYasha. Then-12-year-old Brenna O'Brien is perfect in what she considers her favorite voice acting role as Rin, the human girl who is almost always with Sesshomaru, busting wide open the claim that he dislikes humans. Her interactions with Jaken are as entertaining as ever. Going forward, Don Brown, who also provides the voice of InuYasha's father and voiced a side character named Farmer Brown in an episode of Ranma ½, is laugh-out-loud funny as Jaken, Sesshomaru's whiny and cowardly servant who tries to act tougher than he actually is and is often subject to Rin's observations on this fact. A perfect example is in the latter half when she observes that he is trembling with fear and he denies it. Jaken is also the subject of some very amusing slapstick when he tries to put Sesshomaru off of working with InuYasha. He's in a protective barrier with Sango, Miroku, Shippo, Rin, and Myoga and everyone (excepting Myoga) beats the crap out of him. Ward Perry is appropriately sinister and threatening as So'unga, the evil demon sword that wants to destroy everything. Jonathan Holmes is also very good as Takemaru, the corpse who becomes So'unga's pawn. So are all the rest and the dub script is completely natural. All that said, this is another great chapter in the InuYasha story, certainly up there with some of the series' best episodes and as with the previous two, no InuYasha fan should miss it. Onto Fire on the Mystic Island.

Been trying to pile through as many movies as I can while I have the Criterion free trial. As you may already know the Most Dangerous Game is...people. Zaroff causes folks to shipwreck near his island then after taking 'em in, he takes 'em out. Pretty good action for a 30's film. Leslie Banks is very good as the insane Zaroff.

InuYasha: Fire on the Mystic Island (2004) - First Time on Netflix rating_3_5
So, there are a few missteps here that make this the weakest entry. These missteps mostly come in the form of certain plot mechanics. Why is it that InuYasha and Sesshomaru are both on this island at the same time, both have the mark of the Four War Gods, and they never once bump into each other? I know, they already worked together to defeat the evil in Swords of an Honorable Ruler, but that detail felt like it should have been fleshed out and explored more. And then there's Kikyo. Why is she even there if she's going to appear in two or three scenes and then drop out completely? Why is it that she says she can't just stand by and let the evil stand, but literally does exactly that aside from destroying a clone of herself that attempts to kill InuYasha? That also felt like the screenwriters should have explored it more. On top of that, the Four War Gods are even less threatening than Menomaru and their "Eeeeevil!" plans don't hold much weight since their bark is clearly worse than their bite. Aside from these flaws, though, it's a solid story. The action manages to be exciting, Wada's score is once again amazing as is the animation, and the English dub is another good one. Cox and Stori are once again excellent as InuYasha and Kagome. So are Sheridan and Morrow as Sango and Miroku, Michaels as Shippo, Kaye as Sesshomaru, and Johnson as Kikyo, making the weak storyline she's been given way better than it deserves to be. Kristian Ayre, Jason Simpson, Takewaki Kuno himself Ted Cole, Ward Perry (who voiced a certain demon sword in the previous outing) give it their best shot as the Four War Gods, a band of demons who want to regain their powers in order to slaughter all the children on the mystic island. Everyone else is also good and the dub script is completely natural. With all that said, Fire on the Mystic Island is still solid in spite of its flaws and it's certainly worth a look for InuYasha fans.

Movie about a professor of English diagnosed with lungs cancer, ironically he have never smoked, so he decided to enter in the fuc'it mode until he die. The message was: enjoy your life, which obviously raises the question of what is enjoying life, is so relative and arbitrary, but for the character point was that we should all strive to make/leave a mark in this world, and there was nothing worse than a insignificance/mediocre life, and he obviously didn't care about conceptions, so he could do anything. This is such a Western concept, it reminds me of the movie Serpico where his with all this artists types, they are saying: I'm a painter but I work in a restaurant, I'm an actor but I work in a office, this goes on for a while and Al Pacino says: I'm a cop and I work for the police department. The character also says we should find happiness, which is also very vague, in the West finding happiness depends on outside events, get the money, get the pleasures, you good... basically this. His also liberal, tolerant, which is a form of superiority, always be one up. I didn't though Johnny Depp would make such a movie, very honestly.

This was a tv movie I actually watched on the tv movie channel lol every once in a while I like these overly sentimental more simple productions and this one had Susan Sarandon in it which was a plus of course, she plays a cancer-stricken physician stranded at a South Pole research station who, under dangerous circumstances, and with the help of co-workers, treats her own illness. Its quite an inspiring story of ordinary people helping and of life in the pole and cant deny my eyes threatened to well up a couple of times towards the end

A Cure for Wellness (2016)
Does drag in certain places and quite predictable in parts too, of which are probably due to the overly long runtime. I still found it a fun film and something a little different to what I've seen in recent times. Performances were good and I liked the tense/paranoid atmosphere during most of the film. Its not scary but could possibly be compared with some of Cronenberg's work, so fans of him may enjoy. Does get a big thumbs up for the imagery though, some of the scenes were incredible to look at!

Train To Busan
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/9/95/Train_to_Busan.jpg
Simple character arcs with numerous characters, and zombies on a train... and a little twist at the end too.
Loved some of the characters in this as well.
The treatment is disparate with them which is cool: Bad father and husband with a kid in tow... father-to-be and mother-to-be... a couple young lovers, both of which are a little naïve... an antagonist who actually has a point...
... and they all go through a learning curve.
There's a 30 second scene that reminded me of the scenes from The Mist too when people on the train become 2 "factions"...
Fun to watch, and like the OP said in the Busan Thread, the aesthetic is like watching the zombies from World War Z... this is far better though. They also have a couple traits with the zombies with their sight and sound which is a super cool addition.
The special effects are also solid. Good CGI, good makeup effects and the zombie choreography is seemingly done using actual real and proper dancers, martial artists and gymnasts and stuff. They contort and move so weirdly, it has to be a profession.
Edit/addition: Kim Su-an as Su-an, the Daughter of the main guy... what a remarkable little actress. She's got a majorly successful future ahead of her :)
Not quite the 100% magic marker... some of it is "Seen it before" territory so it loses a few points.
But, with a zombie movie this good, in this day and age?
My rating: 94%

Very interesting documentary about the Flat Earther community. They are like a subculture of people who deny basic scientific facts because they believe that it is all a government conspiracy. People who are attracted to this are usually people who are to some degree social outcasts who disdain authority and who lack formal scientific education.
While it is easy to mock this kind of people we have to be aware that we all are to some degree flat earthers in the senses that: We believe in many things through our basic intuition or personal connections instead of actually researching the topic. We are also often dogmatic regarding many beliefs even when presented with overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

Interesting perspective. Do you have an example where this viewpoint applies to you personally? Meaning, what belief do you maintain regardless of any vast evidence contradicting that belief? If that is getting too personal, a no response is perfectly understandable you prefer to keep that to yourself.

I very much enjoyed the slow pace of this crime film. The very few action scenes are tense and thrilling rather than over the top. The story suits my taste and I liked how it played out. Kidman reminded me of Theron in Monster; unfortunately I don't think make-up and radical changes in appearance make a performance. I mean she was fine and all that, but nothing special as far as I could see. Just ugly and angry like a junkyard dog. Her fractured relationship with her daughter is about a fifth of the movie. Quite frankly I found these scenes boring and without them I could have loved this.

I'm unsure why Demián Bichir was there as he did little (in my opinion) for the movie.
Jonas Bloquet was very charming.
All in all I'd give it a 2.5/5 as passable.
It (2017)
I loved everything about this movie - however I feel like they skipped very important bits from the books which made the film a bit too much like other scary movies - like why the adults didn't do anything? it explains it in the book (I believe they will explain it in the 2nd movie so I will refrain from spoilers here)
People seemed to not understand why Pennywise didn't kill the boys right away - there is little hints that he feeds by their fear and the more fear the stronger he gets - however it is not portrayed in the movie as much.
Unsure what else I can say without spoiling it.
I'm very excited for the 2nd part. Fun fact - the children from the first movie got to chose the actors that represent them in the 2nd so that will be even more interesting!
P.S Bill Skarsgård as Pennywise is brilliant - and probably my favourite shoot was his dance (which I would link but cannot yet q_q )

Fantastic little fable, seen this film before (more than once) and I love how you root for Dalton. It's a tad cheesy but forgiveably so..Swayze really looks the part in it and you can tell his dancing background helped in the fight scenes (which he had a major part in choreographing).

Kitty Foyle (1940)
This Sam Wood directed production won the Best Actress Oscar for Ginger Rogers. The film has a theme that's been imitated time and again, but it was fresh and innovative at the close of the 1930s.
A girl is torn between someone she is smitten with, but who harks from a higher class and a snooty society into which she knows she will not fit. Her other suitor is a young M.D. practitioner who loves her, but is just starting to find his way in life. If you guessed that she ends up with the struggling physician, move to the head of the class.
Because of the many imitations, the film is not as interesting as it was years ago. But Rogers is magnetic as America's girl next door who has high morals and standards (completely absent from modern cinema).
Her wealthy suitor is played by Dennis Morgan, who, although he probably had the whitest teeth and most unique smile in Hollywood, was never one of my favorites. His abilities were best used in the '30s, and his fresh preppie looks were popular in the era.
One of the writers was "Mr. CPUSA" Dalton Trumbo. The tasteful score was by Roy Webb.
This is a classic film, worth a watch for Roger's performance: an essay from the past.

Akira (1988) - Rewatch on Blu-ray rating_5
Martin Liebman of Blu-ray.com mentions in his review of Training Day that there are certain directors he is a fan of based on one movie. He mentions Antoine Fuqua based on Training Day (of course) and goes on to mention Wolfgang Petersen based on Das Boot and several others. When I got to thinking about it, it occurred to me that most probably have such a director. For me, it's Katsuhiro Otomo and the basis is Akira. I've seen the film about 40 times and it never ceases to amaze me or wears out its welcome. Like most of my viewings, this one also involved the 1988 Streamline dub, and my love for that old dub hasn't diminished, either. From the voice acting and the energy the actors put into it - you can tell Clarke and co. had fun dubbing it - all the way down to the script - I can probably quote it verbatim - it's one of my favorite dubs and always will be. Not to mention the story, the animation, and the Geinoh Yamashirogumi score. If you want a full-blown review, you can find that in my thread, but, suffice it to say, Akira is still a cracking sci-fi actioner.

Steamboy (2004) - First Time on DVD rating_4_5
As a fan of Otomo's, it probably goes without saying that I'd been interested in this one for a while. Boy, does it deliver. Let's just say that if and when I get enough money, there will be nothing to stop me importing the Blu-ray from Australia. With that said, let it be stated right up front that anyone expecting Akira 2 is going to be invariably disappointed simply because that's not the kind of film Otomo was trying to make here. With that said, if a fan of Akira goes in with the right expectations (or even none at all) and simply trusts Otomo to make something great, they'll most likely enjoy it. Or at least, that's what I did. The story is a great one; I'm sure Otomo would accept nothing less. The animation is stunning, especially during the destruction scenes because no one animates destruction like Katsuhiro Otomo. Also, even with the movie set in Manchester and London, you can still tell these are Otomo's character designs simply because he has a very distinct style that's impossible to duplicate. We also get a pitch-perfect musical score by Steve Jablonsky. It's not the Geinoh Yamashirogumi score and it's nothing like the Geinoh Yamashirogumi score. Anyone expecting that would, again, be invariably disappointed. But I guess that hardly matters since it's perfect for Steamboy and the kind of film it is. Akira is a cyberpunk story set in this very year we're almost halfway through and Steamboy is a steampunk story set in the 19th century, so it's important to keep that in mind before bringing in unreasonable expectations. With that said, the English dub from Sony is a really good one. It was so cool watching one of the special features on this disc, Re-voicing Steamboy, and seeing that Otomo was right there and sound designer Kei Momose came back to design the sound for the dub. Sheeta (and Amy Alden) herself Anna Paquin, in her second time dubbing anime after Castle in the Sky, is excellent as James Ray Steam, the 13-year-old protagonist who has to figure out what's really going on when his father and grandfather start fighting against each other and these shadowy company men want the item the father and son invented together. It's amazing how convincing Paquin is as a boy. She just nails it. It was also pretty cool hearing Paquin mention that watching Akira with her boyfriend at the time made her a fan of Otomo and anime. Lord Yupa (and Captain Jean-Luc Picard) himself Patrick Stewart, mere months after dubbing Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, is also excellent as Lloyd, Ray's grandfather who tells him his father is dead and insists his son has become purely evil. Two actors who have each dubbed one of my absolute favorite Miyazaki films dubbing an Otomo film. Am I dreaming? So is Alfred Molina as Eddie, Ray's father who is clearly wigged out from whatever happened to him in the film's opening - What the hell happened to his hair? - and has become at least somewhat delusional. Alongside all the live-action stars, anime dubbing and voice acting veteran Kari Wahlgren also nails Scarlett O'Hara St. Jones, a 14-year-old American girl who is often engaged in friendly bickering with Ray. So is everyone else and the dub script is completely natural. All things considered, I really enjoyed Steamboy and I can definitely see myself revisiting it many times in the future. Wow. Why doesn't Otomo make more movies? He's certainly got a knack for it.

Interesting perspective. Do you have an example where this viewpoint applies to you personally? Meaning, what belief do you maintain regardless of any vast evidence contradicting that belief? If that is getting too personal, a no response is perfectly understandable you prefer to keep that to yourself.
By definition I should be mostly unaware of such beliefs. That is, people do not know the stuff that is their dogma and the stuff that is not dogma but well stablished knowledge.
But if you want an answer I suspect that I am systematically wrong when I guess other people's information and beliefs but I often think I am right.

'The Beach Bum' (2019)
Directed by Harmony Korine
https://s3.gifyu.com/images/beach-bum-collage.gif
One of the few good things about this dreadful Trump era is that it's inspiring great art, as tragedies often do. Korine's new film is a wacky, hedonistic look into wealth, creativity and responsibility. Matthew McConaughey plays a wastrel with a rich wife. There are parts that are hilarious and parts that make little sense. It touches on flawed geniuses, anti materialism, and has a superb soundtrack. Snoop dog and Jonah Hill play periphery characters with funny lines. There are parts that resemble 'The Wolf of Wall Street', 'Pineapple Express' and 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas' There are some scenes I shouldn't have laughed so hard at. But that's the point. It also looks fantastic. Possibly the best looking film of 2019 so far. Like 'Spring Breakers' it dabbles in neon lights, the ocean and cityscape backdrops.
Some people will hate this movie. I enjoyed spending time in the chaos.

https://thelatestpictureshow.files.wordpress.com/2013/06/scarface.jpg
Brian DePalma and Al Pacino were the driving forces behind this incredible remake. This movie has established its own life to the point that people sometimes forget it is a remake. Oliver Stone's screenplay could have used a little trimming, but I never get tired of the "Goodnight to the Bad Guy" scene in the restaurant and the bomb under the car scene.

The only time Broadway legend Gwen Verdon was allowed to bring a character she originated on stage to the big screen. Ray Walston also is allowed to recreate his stage role as Mr. Applegate AKA The Devil. Tab Hunter is a bland leading man, but we still have Bob Fosse's incredible choreography...this is also the only movie where you can see Fosse and Verdon dance together in "Who's Got the Pain?" which is worth the price of admission alone.

Plus One (Jeff Chan and Andrew Rhymer, 2019)
Coming out this Friday, I got to see an early screening of this comedy about two lifelong friends who during a summer of weddings, decide to become each other's "plus one". Maya Erskine is hilarious in the film as the very blunt Alice and Jack Quaid (son of Dennis and Meg Ryan) is also great as Ben, who struggles with having to deal with his father's impending third marriage amidst the chaos. We kind of know where this is going to go, but these two's chemistry drive the film and make you want to go along for the ride.

Arrival -2016
Saw this on tv a couple days ago. Had been meaning to get around to it for a couple years. I actually really enjoyed the movie. Really neat visuals. The story held my attention the whole time. Well acted, especially Amy Adams. When the hell is she going get an Oscar? Denis Villeneuve is definitely a stud, my man can make a movie. Sicario was a very cool flick. Prisoners was good but ultimately sort of forgettable to me, I don't remember much from it. But Blade Runner 2049 was one of the coolest most beautiful shot movies ever. Definitely keep an eye out for his projects.
With this movie I was sort of just expecting some clunky alien movie that never showed the aliens and made some ambiguous point at the end. However I was surprised at the end how moved I was. The question it asks at the end and the way in which he directed it really hit me in the feels. I was pleasantly surprised how much I like it. I don't think I'll be looking to revisit it anytime soon but it was well done. Makes you remember there actual is some talent left out there in Hollywood trying to entertain you rather than preach to you.
I'd give it 3.5 out of 5. Probably give it a 4 if it felt more rewatchable.

My Cousin Vinny - 1992
Saw this movie on TV a couple days ago as well. It's one of those movies I should have seen but never got around to it. Always heard about it but literally knew nothing about it. I was honestly expecting sort of a serious crime drama in New York or something ha. Got a light hearted murder trail in Alabama lol. It was actually really refreshing to watch a light hearted take on a New Yorker in the South. Feel like if they made this today they would have to show how racist and backwards Alabama/The South is. They poke fun at both New York and the South. Feel like you couldn't make this in today's climate. It's only purpose is to try and entertain you rather than preach some message. Like I said refrshing. I miss the 90s.
Joe Pesci was really good in a lighter role. It was just hard to think Pesci could land a chick like a prime Marisa Tomei ha. They have chemistry and make it work well enough to forget she is out of his league ha. But I see why Tomei won her Oscar for this. She was amazing. She was beautiful, charming and confident in this role. She is still a fox but damn she was a major fox back then. That faucet scene still has me laughing.
It is a pretty goofy premises is really it's only detriment. It's pretty generic in it's outcome. But once you get the feel for the tone you forgive it then it charms you. It was refreshing to watch and I got a kick out of it. Some memorable scenes.
I'd give it 3 out of 5. Maybe will improve if I watch it again.

Well, I wasn't expecting that answer, especially considering people have been living in the Information Age for some time now. People being unaware of overwhelming evidence against their belief might have been more common before the seventies, but current times, it would be an isolated few that maintain a shield against any challenge that questions their belief.

Head Count (Elle Callahan, 2019): During a weekend visit with his older brother, a young man encounters a group of vacationers and instantly falls for the ninth wheel. During a night of telling campfire tales, he recites a poem he reads, which conjures up a creature known as the Hisji. First time director Callahan created the Hisji based on her experience of mythological creatures. Great twists throughout the film and eclectic cast of characters.
