But they are not metal. Nirvana is closer to metal than Slipknot as well as being more popular, well, the difference is perhaps that the guys from Slipknot explicitly claim to be metal, but to my ears that is not metal as well as for people who are into metal (metal archives does not list Slipknot there, Kai Hansen and other European or South American metal musicians also don't regard any of those American bands like Slipknot as metal).
They should have interviewed more European bands like Candlemass, Hellhammer and Helloween, as they said the biggest metal community in the world is in continental Europe around Germany but they didn't interview a lot of those bands. Still that was the best part of the documentary.
I guess that's a perspective thing. Sam Dunn certainly seems to think that Slipknot are at the very least relevant enough to the current concept of metal that they are worth giving screen-time to in his metal-themed documentary regardless of whether or not certain other metalheads think that they don't qualify as metal. This feels very similar to the people who claim that electronic music doesn't count as "real music". In any case, I guess there's only so much you can do when your documentary ends up being about 100 minutes and you might need to hook people in using popular groups like Slipknot. It does make you wonder just how much got left on the cutting-room floor and how the film might have been better served by becoming a TV series or something.
Anyway...
It's a Wonderful Life - 3.5

I love the earlier films of Resnais as N&F, Hiroshima Mon Amour but his films after The Last Year At Marienbad... Not my cup of tea (except My American Uncle). Providence describes the writing process of an alcoholic and sick writer. It's a real boring mess. The actors, the music... are excellent. There's an oniric atmosphere but it's hard to find an interest in this film.

I haven't but I plan to watch that, I am binge watching documentaries these days.
Sam Dunn did the best job it seems he could do, he doesn't really delve too much into anything, it seems like he's scared to do more than scratch the surface of a genre that is so deep and intricate. The film itself is good for people that want an outside look in, but to anyone who actually lives/lived that life, it's a joke. Myself, I lived the black metal lifestyle and wore the "uniform" for a decade plus. There is a big difference between casual fans(who this movie was likely made for) and fans who do the work themselves.
And I thought it was funny how he tried to make Varg out to be this mystical black metal villain. And to be honest European Black Metal and Death Metal are hardly the most extreme of there genre. Canada and the US are leaps and bounds ahead in that sense.
And no, Slipknot, Mudvayne, SOAD, Mushroom Head, Coal Chamber ETC are not metal and are not considered as such by "kvlt" metal fans.

Rewatching Harry Potter, sadly I have finished the last one I actually enjoyed, I will watch the other 3 again (I didn't even bother with Part 2 but I will finally watch it now), but mostly just to finally rate them all on here. Many say the newer ones are the best but I actually find it the opposite, after the fourth one It just seems like the magic (figuratively ofcourse lol) was gone. I never felt wonder or any enjoyment, even when they have those sort of scenes in the newer ones. Harry Potter also started something that now every....single.....****ing.....movie directed towards the teen audience does which is split the last book into two movies. This is why I quit watching Hunger Games after Catching Fire (Also thought the series was getting bad) and I have not even bothered with Divergent or Maze Runner and don't even talk about Twilight, I watched the first one and I was immediately finished with that series.

Heaven's Gate 4.5
Monumental.
Uh, it honestly makes me sad that a film of such striking ambition and scale has garnered such a negative reputation since its release. Heaven's Gate is appreciated in certain circles, but it still does not receive the proper recognition it rightfully deserves. Cimino was a great filmmaker, always was, and his remarkable talent is especially prevalent here.
It has flaws, for sure, but they aren't enough to diminish the greatness of this film.

Didn't like it. A couple of good lines, a lot of time dedicated to watching three men sleep. I gave it a 5, which I grade as "breaking even" partly because I've been trying to watch this movie for a year, but I heard the same exact complaints on here that were going through my mind while I was watching it I'm sure.

Unoriginal and unlikable animated movies like Boxtrolls and Sponge Out of Water get 75 % and 79 % on RT respectably while a movie with some originality and likability gets 46%. Maybe that random IMDB user (http://www.imdb.com/user/ur0077225/) was right when he said today's critics have "shown no critically faculties." ;) (though not in the examples he gave.) Joke Mode - No offense to today's critics, I thought it was a good joke to make. http://www.ew.com/sites/default/files/styles/tout_image_612x380/public/i/2015/08/17/joy-poster_612x380.jpg
First, the bad news. Joy has schizophrenia. Not the character but the movie itself. It transitions between a magical fairytale and a paint-by-the-numbers overcoming-adversity biopic whenever it wants. There is no method to its madness which I could discern. Add to that, the fact that the overbearing social message is spelled out in the prologue before being driven home with a G.I. Jane haircut. Emphasizing your trendy humanitarian goals as a director that strongly is a good way to turn me cynical. No need to pat yourself on the back for being prowomen. It's 2015, and this special episode of Shark Tank isn't exactly a bra burning.
Now, the good news. This is David O. Russell's most convincing picture of late, proving he can still craft a narrative that isn't just a thinly veiled vehicle for Oscar noms. Jennifer Lawrence will probably get one anyway and I won't be terribly upset about it either. All in all, it might not have succeeded on every front, but it tried something daring where it could have played it safe. It has balls, and yes, that's the patriarchy talking.
P.S. Never go for the royalty. Mr. Wonderful is taking you for a ride.

The definition of sleaze. Bronson makes a pimp eat his rolex, has racist rants against Japanese people, rapes a pedophile with a giant dildo and eventually has him put in a prison cell with a 450 pound, bear-looking rapist. Bronson ends the film with the line: "now that's justice!" They don't make them like this anymore! Lol

(2015)
A modern American newspaper drama, Spotlight features brilliant performances and an engaging plot about the Boston Globe's uncovering of the Catholic Church's cover-up of priests involved in child molestation cases.
It's great seeing Michael Keaton back to playing serious roles after last year's Oscar nominated performance in Birdman. However, the highlight performance in the film belongs to Mark Ruffalo.

David Benioff, D.B. Weiss
Just finished watching the second season of GoT. Although I did like it a bit less than the first one, it's still very captivating and does a good job at bringing new elements in the story to keep it interesting and surprising. The new characters are great, and so are the visual effects. The acting is on point, and the second season still has the same ''just one more episode'' feel to it (and that's awesome). On to the third one now.

The Hateful Eight (Quentin Tarantino, 2015) 5
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/d4/The_Hateful_Eight.jpg
So I was going to post this rating with half a star less, but I have seen it a few times now and I do think this is a masterpiece. I've talked to Cobpyth about this a few times and we both love it. When I first saw it I was unsure what to think of it in terms of where it would fit into my rankings of Tarantino's filmography, but it has to be right up there near the top, on every viewing I have thought more of it.
First viewing, more focused on plot. The first hour and a half is excellent in terms of character writing, all we know about what these characters is what they say, but we don't trust anyone. I honestly had no idea what on earth was going to happen, but I loved watching it. I won't go talk about the plot really because the less you know the better.
Performances are all superb, Kurt Russell and Michael Madsen are probably the most "standard", but they do their parts well. Tim Roth is f*cking hilarious (so is Mexican Bob) and if it was Waltz in the role he would have an Oscar coming his way again, he has so many great lines "It sure ain't Buster", "Good luck mate" etc., Jennifer Jason Leigh is perfect, her eyes are haunting, so ugly yet there's something hypnotic about her, she nails the psychopathic role without ever having to push it too far. Cobpyth mentioned to me about how good Dern is, at first I thought his performance was quiet a straightforward grumpy old man with not much to say, but repeat viewings and closer attention reveal to me some fantastic acting, the desperation and cutting-ness of his voice, the desperation in his eyes.
The Walton Goggins and Samuel L. Jackson relationship is great. Tarantino really knows how to create great relationships. There are so many moments that I think remind us of similar moments in his other films, we still have similar themes and ideas of different sides yet the moral structure that hold things together, justice, the law, honour, respect, etc.
The soundtrack, superb. Subtle at times, but always really effective, especially in some of the more claustrophobic and/or tense moments. The very final song as the credits it is a fantastic choice. The whole final scene is absolutely perfect, almost brought atears to my eyes all three times. I don't get the complaints about Tarantino being racist, sexist, whatever... to me his characters maybe, but the underlying message is one of progress and empowerment, but I don't want to get too involved in politics.
I could go on and on, there's a lot to talk about, but most of it would be ramblings and I don't want to discuss certain parts too much because of spoilers, but I've had some really great chats with Cobpyth about the film so far.
I can understand why people dislike this maybe. I think certain people go in to the film looking to come out disappointing, but I also think the films different in that there's no clear hero (like Django), it's very dark and nihilistic at times, perhaps has some of Tarantino's most shocking scenes, but I really think that these aren't weaknesses. Maybe he did make it more deliberately f*cked up and grim, maybe some of the scenes are a bit OTT, but I could have watched this for hours more, the writing is great, II think this might be one of Quentin Tarantino's most personal and political film, there's so much going on underneath, the whole thing feels maybe it's like he's trying to say "f*ck you America", I definitely think there's a lot of analysis going on in terms of law, race etc. definitely complex.
Anyway, ramblings over, I hope people enjoy the film. Maybe watch it a couple of times if you weren't sure about the first viewing, I think expectations can be misleading, especially in mysteries. I loved it the first time, enjoyed and appreciated even more on the next two viewings :)

Great Write-up Daniel! I'm still not sure what to think of that movie, but I already want to watch it again. One thing I don't think I mentioned when I first wrote something on it, was that I restarted it an hour into it. I enjoyed that first hour more the second time around.

On my second viewing I skipped the first hour actually, watched it all on the third viewing and I thought the first hour flew by in comparison to my first viewing. Maybe because more the first time I was trying so hard to listen to the conversations, I was so suspicious and focusing so hard on these first four characters. I was able to be more relaxed and observe other details on my last viewing.

I don't get the complaints about Tarantino being racist, sexist, whatever... to me his characters maybe, but the underlying message is one of progress and empowerment, but I don't want to get too involved in politics.
True words. I'm amazed at some of the critical attacks towards this film regarding those themes (even by critics like Matt Zoller Seitz, whose opinion I usually respect a lot). They just seem so odd and misguided to me. I think Tarantino actually makes great use of the themes Daniel is naming there.
If anyone disagrees with me, I'd definitely be wanting to have a large discussion about that particular thematical aspect of Tarantino's more recent work, because I think it's one of the most ridiculous criticisms against him out there. If anything, he actually deserves praise for it instead of hate.
Anyway, as Daniel already mentioned, I also really loved the film. It might be one of Tarantino's best to date for me (which says a lot). It's brilliantly written, it's full of memorable sequences, the underlying themes are meaningfully used and above all, it's an extremely entertaining cinematic ride! Tarantino delivered yet again and his filmography keeps getting more impressive. Can't wait to see where his genius takes us next!

Great story. I think they used the idea, and built a lot of mediocrity around it. Even during the non-satirical parts, the acting wasn't very good. I could see why this was remade. Would have liked to see more substance, less empty scenes with not-so-great writing.

I'm not sure if I was laughing to buffer myself from being exploitated emotionally, but I was definitely laughing. Whether profound or pretentious, I couldn't take it seriously enough to care. I will say, however, that it peaked too early. You have to save your crowd pleasers for the right moments. Xavier Dolan getting mowed down with a shotgun is a terrible thing to waste.

TRUMBO
(2015)
A terrific biopic directed by Jay Roach of Austin Powers and Meet The Parents fame, Trumbo stars Bryan Cranston in his best movie performance to date as blacklisted 50's screenwriter Dalton Trumbo who was jailed and banned in Hollywood for being associated with the Communist Party, but continued writing screenplays and winning awards under different names.
The movie also features brilliant performances by Helen Mirren, Louis C.K., and Diane Lane.

Prometheus (2012) 4
I actually really liked Prometheus. I liked the story they set up. The only big problems I had with this movie was some of the characters and the some of the dialogue along with some other minor things. Michael Fassbender and Idris Elba were the best parts of the movie for me. Noomi Rapace (really weird name by the way) wasn't bad but when I think about this movie I remember Fassbender and Elba over everybody else. Theron wasn't bad either but the character wasn't really explored that much or really entertaining to watch in any way to make her memorable.

It was difficult to understand as the accent was real strong, but I managed. The movie shows how the system dehumanizes people and when push comes to shove, creates monsters out of us.

Contempt 4
One of the best opening sequences...ever. The film's musical theme was lovely. The colors are beautiful and vibrant; the most beautiful of any Godard film. There's a clarity to the film's themes and ideas, all of which are conveyed brilliantly through well-written dialogue and rich character interaction. The script is smart, sharp, self-aware.
Great film. I'm overjoyed to actually be in love with a Godard film again! :D

- I think it's my 3rd rewatch of this flick and I dig it the same everytime. This movie is surround by many cliché of modern horror flick but it run well in this movie because the direction and the acting is perfectly on point. Scott Derrickson is not one of my favorite for nothing the guy always deliver for me, he never let me down. Soundtracks are also great (especially People Are Strange which is an awesome song). The mood and the creepy atmosphere is anothe thing Derrickson do well in each of his movie and I really appreciate that. Eric Bana is one awesome underrated actor and Olivia Munn is hot as hell. This movie is awesome.

THE HATEFUL EIGHT
(2015)
The highly anticipated Tarantino film is an instant western masterpiece. I will not give any of the story away, but what I can say is that it is filled with funny dialogue, extraordinary cinematography, brilliant performances by the entire cast, and a captivating musical score by Ennio Morricone. It's not Tarantino's best film, but it's one that will get better and more entertaining with repeated viewings.
The highlight performances in the film belong to Jennifer Jason Leigh, Kurt Russell, Channing Tatum, and, of course, Samuel L. Jackson.

Hello everybody. Apologies for my lack of activity. Work has stunk for the past month and I recently got a PS4 so my gamer side has been getting the venting its been wanting. I did however subscribe to that movie pass deal, so I have been going to the theater far more than I used to and I'm going to talk about the movies I've seen there and the one I watched at home.
Creed
rating_4_5
Though the romance subplot came off as sweet but a bit disposable and the impossible to avoid boxing clichés are obvious, Creed is a very well directed and acted film that stands strong not only among the classic franchise it's breathing new life into but on its own merits as well.
Krampus
rating_3_5
It felt a bit rushed near the end and that old cardinal sin of not being that scary rears its ugly head again (though I imagine it would be terrifying for children), but it's hard to deny that Krampus is a delightfully fun and great looking horror film that I feel could have been a bit more successful if not for it's misleading trailer.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens
rating_4_5
Rushed ending that could've had the last five minutes taken off of aside, like Creed, The Force Awakens reawakens (no pun intended) the same enjoyment of the original trilogy and progresses as well. With the dependency on CGI being left far behind, the introduction of fresh, well developed, and strongly acted characters, and the promise of big reveals coming down the line, it's an exciting time to be a Star Wars fan.
The Big Short
rating_4_5
Who says Oscar bait can't be entertaining? I think the acting clinics the leads and narrator were displaying and the fourth wall breaks made me enjoy this bittersweet docudrama more than I was supposed to.
Daddy's Home
rating_2
The power to make one laugh is a powerful one and is the only reason I feel I can't completely trash this movie because I did laugh a good couple of times (mostly at the slapstick) but the forced and unbelievable storyline, one dimensional characters, and shameless use of product placement (seriously they have like a fifteen second car commercial barely five minutes in) guarantees a non recommendation.
Moonrise Kingdom (The only movie I've seen all the way through at home since Thanksgiving)
rating_4_5
Since The Grand Budapest Hotel, I've required a new appreciation for Wes Anderson and his unique filming style and Moonrise Kingdom reinforced that. The cinematography in this film is top notch as well as the acting, writing, dialogue, and script.

There Will Be Blood (2007)
Hard to choose but at least 8.4 out of 10
I loved this movie. Especially the protagonist, or more like the anti-hero Daniel Plainview
I haven't read a lot about it but through the whole movie i felt that it was realistic, like this could happen. A little psychotic guy driven by ambition and greed makes his way through his life achieving the things he wanted and didn't care about who did he hurt, cripple etc.
Also why i rate it pretty high is the atmosphere. It's must be hard to capture the 1900's western america this good. I mean you could feel how hot it is there and when the smoke blocks the sunlight it is like its happening above you. Other than that is the music, it was really simple but it made the viewer feel the dramatic reality that our anti-hero felt.
And I also gave this movie an extra point for directing, how the scenes connected to each other. Like when Daniel slapped Eli and after a few scenes it happened again but with Eli slapping Daniel. Also than Eli makes Daniel confess his worst sin and in the end Daniel makes him do the same.

I always looked at Eli as the bad one... Daniel might be a metaphor for industrialism and greed, but Eli is also greedy. At least Daniel brought roads, schools, etc., while Eli did nothing to help the folks, instead he fooled them into giving him money, even when he didn't believe.

- Superb and visually stunning movie from this decade. I love the ''friendship'' and the co-habitation between the humain and the tiger throughout the movie. Some scenes were surrealist but so well-executed that it makes the movie 10 times better. The young actor Suraj Sharma give one hell of an awesome performance as ''Pi'' and the ending bring me tears to my eyes. Great Movie and great rewatch.

"I couldn't get past the 52nd minute of "The Hateful Eight" - what a piece of ****. Cliche after cliche, stupid "modern" parody and mockery. I used to champion free speech but I really admire discretion and talent. In today's economy, you'd probably have to work really long and hard just for a ticket to the theater. And I bet this will make a ton of money...
I've never seen Star Wars, but you know if it was a piece of ****, it would still sell close to a billion dollars...
I attribute "world problems" to the lack of art to fill the human heart, but I'm happy to live in an age where I can find music, film, comedy, etc., from before I was born.

Viewing this I couldn't help but notice how much influence it has had on the styles of numerous filmmakers: Scorsese, Ferrara, and Mann. Cassavetes' style is "loose", rough and with a sense of texture that no other filmmaker can replicate. Even though his style purposely lacks formality; there's still a sense of cohesion to the imagery. The way he shoots the darkness of the city streets or the fiery interiors of a shady night-club. Cassavetes is a master filmmaker.

Cathy Come Home - 10/10
Wow. Great film. The directing was very economical, no waste, no filler. Even during the everyday activity, there would be voice-over so that no time was wasted, so that every second counted. It's the kind of film-making I like - they don't milk things like death, sex, or anything exploitable.
Very socially conscious film. At times I was heartbroken; at times I was angry. Good. I'm guessing that was the point of this movie. I notice Ken Loach's theme - how the system turns good people into "bums" or "criminals" usually over something someone had no control over.

P.S. - Would like to thank Christine, Senso, and anyone else who recommended Ken Loach.

HBO documentary about a heartbreaking story. The title refers to a few of the last words of one of Diane Schuler's nieces, as Schuler sped the wrong way down a highway. The ensuing crash would take the lives of Schuler, her daughter, her three nieces, and three men in another vehicle. Schuler's five year old son was seriously injured, but would survive. Schuler's autopsy revealed high levels of alcohol and marijuana, but there seems to be a missing ingredient to the story. This documentary deals with other theories concerning the cause of the crash, and the grief of loved ones. The story is riveting, and I spent a couple of hours reading up on it when it was finished, but the movie doesn't help with finding any answers. One big negative about the film; it shows photos of Schuler's body on the ground immediately after the crash. I thought this was unnecessary and in bad taste.

Brave (2012)
Absolutely winning Pixar/Disney animated movie that works on all levels. The animation and vocal work are top-notch. The characters are great and the actors voicing them bring them to vivid life. Among the voice-workers are actors Kelly Macdonald, Billy Connolly, Emma Thompson, Julie Walters, Robbie Coltrane, Kevin McKidd, and Craig Ferguson. Five of these mentioned are Scottish-born and raised so that definitely helps in the voice-overs. Another plus is that this is apparently an original story not based on any existing fairy tale and that works in its favor as we don't know what's going to happen. It made a lot of money but I never hear any talk about it being a favorite, but it's definitely one of mine now.

Rewatching all of Tarantino's films before I go see the Hateful Eight, and I must say this is my second favorite. Pulp Fiction is a Hands down number one, but I love this film. Normally not a Jamie Foxx fan, but love him in this role.

I heard this one got disappointing reviews but wanted to watch it myself anyway, make up my own mind. I think I've liked all previous films I've seen from DOR to varying degrees, and the first half an hour gave me some hope that this would at least be a quirky misunderstood, personal film from him, but it just got worst from there. There's lost of issues in the film, but I think the main problem and comment that I have to make about it is that it was so dull and uninteresting, when it was other I just felt like "Meh, that was nothing...". The film fails to blend real life and quirky drama in an interesting way, and in cinematic/directorial terms that is about as uninteresting as it gets too, so standard, so plain... the script is lacking in almost every department, it sounds like a rough first draft that needs another hour worth of content to flesh out characters and createa narrative that actually makes sense and works. Another note, Bradley Cooper's character is so simply conceived, badly written and really is a waste of the actor's abilities.

Ha, fair enough, but even for some of their more simplistic qualities or character simplifications, I find his other films to be entertaining, they have a spark that keeps me interested and caring for what happens, the films are fun, this was incredibly dull.

Cate Blanchett plays a middle-aged woman who is getting divorced from her husband and going through a custody battle over her daughter in 1950's New York City. She meets a young shopgirl and aspiring photographer played by Rooney Mara by chance and develops a romantic relationship with her.
The movie was not my cup of tea. The acting is terrific, though. I expect either Cate or Rooney will be winning this year's Oscar for Best Actress. Aside from that, didn't care for the movie that much.

There's Something Wrong With Aunt Diane - I think it was very redundant. The husband and sister-in-law (though she kept calling her sister) kept hearing "Toxicology shows high amounts of alcohol" - "No, I don't believe it" - very defensive. I think this was made for money only, there's nothing mysterious, the witnesses were very clear, and those are the ones I believe, they have no agenda. They made a documentary out of nothing.. I don't even think it's denial, I don't think they (husband and sister-in-law) are honest people. I'm guessing something was said, possible affair, something. Maybe she just found out and did what she did. Another exploit of a tragedy. So much talk about money, and a lot of "I don't have time for me" from the husband, and the sister-in-law, who is an ally saying "I have to work 14 hours and do all this, he's been off and he's complaining"
I started watching the beginning again... If I had to guess, maybe the husband had an affair with the sister-in-law. I hate to speculate, but oh well, everyone else did/does. Diane never talked to her mom. The sister-in-law says "I don't know why" but everyone else knew it was because the mother left the children, and then it's said the mother had an affair with a family friend next door, and Diane never forgave her. They (husband and sister-in-law) both seem so defensive, and unbelievable, but no one else says anything out of those affected. They hired experts, specialists, and they kept insisting "There was alcohol.. 0.19, ten drinks". Even their attorney said "they hired me so it could be public" - as if it wasn't public enough!

I actually felt a bit sorry for the Sister in Law, she seemed to me like a nice enough woman who was in denial that Diane could have done it. After the expert guy (can't remember his name) confirmed the Toxicology Report she looked defeated and full of doubt, i think more than anything she was doing it for the husband and Dianes surviving child. The Husband on the other hand was a big immature, obnoxious baby who got angry and neglected his son. From the sound of things Diane did absolutely everything and he seemed to be contemplating abandoning his son, hitting out with the completely ridiculous and selfish stuff like "i don't think my head is in the right place to take care of him" .
How ridiculous did it sound asking the expert guy if she could have lost control because of the pain from a tooth abscess? I'm sure he said something along the lines of "theoretically that could be the case, but the toxicology report clearly shows she was drunk". Then the husband somehow managed to take that as a victory while still denying that she was drinking  . Man the whole thing was a mess.
On the speculating part in your second paragraph, you lost me a bit there so i'm not sure if i've properly got what you were saying. If you are saying that Diane found out about an affair between the husband and sis-in-law then decided to kill those kids. Then no i personally disagree, i think Diane recklessly got drunk while driving home and this tragedy happened. I don't think this was intentional at all, the only suspicious thing was her pulling over and having that call with her brother before leaving the cell phone there. To explain that i'd say she was disoriented having more than likely self medicated her tooth problem with alchohol and stupidly got back into the car before losing control. Everything i've heard about that phone call seems like she wasn't acting right at all, and imo that's the best explanation for it.

Sicario - 2015
Didn't know what to expect heading into this movie. All the reviews have been glowing. One thing I did expect was there would be great acting with Brolin and Del Toro and they were both on their A game. Blunt was just as awesome however. I really enjoyed the flick it was a great thriller about the drug trade down in Mexico. Don't really want to say much about the plot without giving too much away. But it had some interesting twists and turns. The score really stood out to me. It was the best I heard all year, really gets your blood pumping. It's a movie that will stay with you long after you watch it. Certainly worht a watch.

I was just speculating on the last part about a possible affair. There were a few people who said "So what if something happened" - another few times there was something said, it was unclear, probably speculation..
I also noticed the face the husband made.. Of course everything is theoretically possible. It seemed kinda staged, just asking things to get a desired result. I agree the husband was very selfish.. It was just a constant "she wasn't drunk" and for some reason, I didn't believe that the husband believed that.

Re-watch. Probably one of my favorite movies. Everything is just told perfectly. My only concerns would be the cheesy beginning and some paradoxes you will never be able to explained. Here's a movie that's severely underrated.
AMERICAN ULTRA (2015)
I didn't know what to expect from this one going in, other than I knew that I enjoyed the first collaboration between Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart (Adventureland) and was hoping for something of similar quality. I ended up liking it quite a bit, even if just for the fact that it's a decent way to waste a couple of hours on a lazy afternoon. It's funny enough, with a few decent comedic scenes, but I have to admit that I was rather surprised at how violent the film was. Wasn't expecting that at all. In the end, Eisenberg and Stewart are fun to watch, the romance between them does a good job of driving the film forward, and at the end, it's simply a good movie, nothing more, nothing less.

21 Grams - 9/10 - Very well acted, directed, and written, but the editing was a bit all over the place for my taste. I know many movies tell a story out of order, but they do so in sizable chunks (see Pulp Fiction). 21 Grams would give 30 seconds to 2 minutes to a scene before moving to the next one. To be fair, it worked in its favor if the goal was to leave the viewer guessing until the end. Lastly, good lord, it was depressing!

Il Boom (1963) - Vittorio De Sica : A well written commedia all'italiana (the script was written by Cesare Zavattini, one of the most famous screenwriter of the Italian cinema) and one of the only comedy of V. De Sica. I really love all these comedies about the Italian economic mirable ("il boom economico") with a critical and ironic view and where we see the streets of Rome full of Fiat 500. Alberto Sordi is great to play the puerile parvenu bourgeois. A blowhard like the characters played by Vittorio Gassman in Dino Risi's films.

I had never heard of this movie until yesterday on the forum. The beginning of the movie is a harbinger of things to come, but then most of the movie is a Western before turning into something Eli Roth might have directed. Kurt Russel gives the best performance I've ever seen from him, and Richard Jenkins, Patrick Wilson, and Matthew Fox are also outstanding. This movie is an unusual mix of Western and horror, but it is tense, and it works. I loved it.

A multilayered and gripping drama set around the South American drug cartels. Emily Blunt finds herself caught up in a web of conspiracy as she and her FBI college are recruited by taskforce agents with questionable methods and objectives. The cinematography gave a realistic and gritty feel that I have not seen in a crime drama for quite a while. The ending was great and memorable and there were standout set-peices throughout the film, which are very Michael Mann. The best crime drama I've seen in a long time.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens - 2015
Well I finally saw it. Felt like me and my buddy were the last people to see the movie. I am no Star Wars geek, but I did get caught up in the whole thing. I hadn't seen the original trilogy since I was like 10. So I watched Episode IV a couple months back, then got around to watching Episodes V and VI around thanksgiving. I enjoyed them and can definitely see people being blown away by them in the late 70s early 80s. The dialogue was so cheesy I could hardly handle it. The stories really shouldn't have worked but somehow they executed them well enough it struck a nerve with everyone and stuck around all this time. Lucas and company created such an immensely creative atmosphere it forgive some of the films short comings to me. I don't think I'll ever bother to watch the prequels, maybe one day.
Anyways on to The Force Awakens. The new cast were really good, especially Boyega and Ridley. You could tell they haven't been jaded yet and really threw themselves into it. For the most part JJ did a great job with the practical effects and CGI, although some CGI didn't work. The atmosphere was really great and the first 40 minutes or so of the movie, introducing Rey and Finn I really enjoyed. It's when they introduced all the original cast it starts to derail, for me at least. Maybe it's because I don't hold the originals as highly guarded as a lot of people. I don't want to watch a 70 year old Han Solo in combat, it doesn't work. As I stated in the spoiler thread I thought this movie used the originals as a crutch instead of a push into a new direction. Where as Creed used the originals as a push forward. TFA was basically Episode IV with more diversity in the lead cast. I think when the new car smell wares off this movie the adrenaline of riding around with a new Star Wars will fade and this movie will take a bit more of a bashing then it is now. The grace period will be until Episode VIII and that movie will dictate how this one is remembered. This movie was basically a blank canvas for the new triology to take off. I am very optimistic about the next one however because Rian Johnson is not your prototypical blockbuster filmmaker. As long as Disney gives him a long leash he won't follow a formula.
It sounds like I was really hard on the film, but I did enjoy it more then I disliked it. And me not being as hardcore as most Star Wars fans probably hurt my opinion of the movie. It's just hard to forgive a movie that is basically the same exact movie as the original with different parts. I get it, they played it safe and hopefully this is all just a setup to help push the franchise into a bold new direction. I mean the box office results say they did something right. Be interesting to see where they take Boyega and Ridley going forward. It was an experience watching the movie.
I'd give it a very soft 3 out of 5.

Full of cliches but so what if it's done well. It's a movie that can make you cheer or make you cry. It's a great true story about the races coming together and the benefits of teamwork. Denzel Washington is great at playing a leader, so playing a football coach is a perfect fit. All of the other performances are spot on as well. Including four songs that I've nominated in MoFo song tournaments, the soundtrack is awesome. Even my wife loved this movie and anyone should enjoy it unless you in da Klan.

Watched two movies recently:
Hitman : Agent 47.
Just awful. As a massive fan of the games, these movies are so disappointing. The entire point of the games was to remain unseen, don't engage anyone unless necessary, complete the objective and leave with as little fuss as possible...the movies are just full blown, OTT action nonsense. The casting was awful too, they couldn't even make Rupert Friend look actually bald as 47 is. 2/10.
And...
Sicario.
MUCH better! What a movie. I thought Emily Blunt's character was a little shoehorned in just to have a female element in the show (not that I'm against strong female characters), but Brolin and especially Del Toro stole the show. The first scene grips you immediately, and it doesn't let up much until the very end. Some of the shots are beautifully executed, and the soundtrack is immense and fills you with the dread that something is about to go down. Highly recommend it. 8/10.

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/72/Nanuk_Port_Harrison_1920.jpg
This is a documentary that shows the life of an eskimo family and their daily fight for survival. What a tough way to live-like cavemen in freezing weather. This movie didn't particularly excite me, but I have respect for these early pictures, and there's a certain fascination with seeing another side of life. Watching them hunt and get their igloo together was pretty interesting.

It's nice having the day off with my wife, but I got sucked into this one. She would rather watch these made for TV Lifetime types of movies over any other kinds of movies. Familiar enough story for one of these; a young divorcee with a son meets the man of her dreams, but then he's not who he seems. I do get a kick out of these movies, and it is at least based on a juicy true story. It's very hard to buy seeing a housewife escaping a police station while in handcuffs and with the whole force on her tail. It was enjoyable but I never would have picked it out. With 20 minutes left, my wife realizes that she's seen it before WTF.

Spotlight - 2015
I was a big big fan of Tom McCarthy's Win Win a few years back. As I've state before if you can write and direct you own stuff you get extra credit from me. I was really interested in The Cobbler but it faded after the horrid reviews, still haven't seen it. I blame Adam Sandler ha. He returned to form big time with this flick however. Wow are you totally engulfed in this thing. You do not feel like you are watching a movie, you feel like you are uncovering this scandal right along with them. It is a ton of information to fit into a 2 hour film but they did a great job of compressing it as well as making it easy enough to follow along, which can be difficult with something like this. Everyone in the movie brought their A game it's hard to single out one actor. I think that will hurt it in the acting categories at the Oscars. However Directing and Best Picture are certainly in play for this thing.
The aspect I appreciated the most was the movie didn't have any flashy scenes that screamed Oscar. They all played it subdued which heighten the realism of it to me. A lot of times realistic movies like this have an actor react to something overboard and it sort of kills it for me. All the actors reacted like normal people to this if that makes sense. It is really touchy material they are researching so know what you are getting into before watching it if it offends anyone. I dislike all religion so I am for any movie that sheds a negative spotlight on any religion. (see what I did there...) The only bad thing is I thought the whole movie was taking place in the late 70s until like 3/4s of the way through when they referenced 9/11. The beginning was when Keatons character took over this section of the newspaper. There was something blocking the dates when I watched it. I figured it out though haha.
Anyways this was an awesomely subdued movie with great performances and direction that explored a tough subject. I think it's a must watch.

Winter Sleep (2014) 3.5/5
First of all, this is one heck of a long movie. Definitely not for the impatient - if you're not a fan of ultra slow moving films with profuse dialogue, steer clear of this one. Personally, I was intrigued by the way it progressed because I am very much drawn to films that challenge me and leave me with next to no clues as to what might happen next. Admittedly, at some point during the film I was on the point of being bored to death but I carried on till the end. Overall, I thought it was definitely worth it, although it didn't impress me all that much.
To me, the best thing about this film was the cinematography which was utterly beautiful. There were some fantastic shots and scenes, and the acting was great. But I have to say some of the conversations really tested my patience - but then again, I'm certain that was part of the intent as they helped reveal the delicate nuances of the characters' psyche.

It's funny, uplifting and so unbelievably far-out fantastic. It has a great start, a solid middle and a great end. The middle is kind of missing that uplifting feeling and the off-beat humor, but Ridley Scott still brings home one of his best movies in years...
Matt Damon is terrific and the cast is well-picked and varied. The visuals are beautiful and the CG is minimal. The soundtrack catches the hopeful and uplifting tone of the story, while also containing a layer of uncertainty and a feeling of the unknown.
I can't wait to watch this again already, definitely one of the best movies of last year.

Umberto D (De Sica, 1952)
http://i.imgur.com/X2jBNTM.jpg
The director of this film, Vitorrio De Sica, doesn't have a noticeable style compared to other directors of his generations. In De Sica's films there are no fancy long take shots or atmospheric lighting. Instead what he does is show post-war Italy as realistic as possible. Thus his use of relatively unknown actors is explained, because if there were big-name stars in a film like this it would be a major distraction. Umberto D is a heartbreaking story of a poor old man who only has his dog and a lonely housemaid. It's only 89 minutes long but by the end the surroundings around you will seem beautiful,

Wild - 6/10
Opens up with a great Simon & Garfunkel song "El Condor Pasa" and then one of my favorite childhood songs "Let Em In" by Paul McCartney and Wings.
I backpacked, but never stayed in a hotel or in a tent. It was either a hostel or camping outside without a tent, but still drew interest. The travel is one part of it, some of it for her was to get away from her past life, a way to start over, or as she says "Take a time-out". Don't wanna give anything away. There are some cliche about traveling, predictable stuff. It's not a very long movie, but seemed to take forever. I even had to take a shower to build more energy while I was in the shower thinking of my own scenarios.
On the writing, which is the most important to me, I felt they would start a great situation to write about, but then abandon it. Probably because it's difficult, but makes the overall piece great. Worth a watch if you only watch new movies.

Wild didn't delve enough into the heroin aspects. It just kept focusing on rape paranoia.
I was disappointed how most of the intensity from this film kept coming from her worry about being raped.
As far as I know she was never raped in the past. But for some reason the film just kept trying to amp up that rapey tension.

I thought the rape paranoia came naturally, it didn't feel to me like the film was "trying" anything. But I think it really works in the film's favor in my opinion, because to me it reflects the kind of world we live in, where that sort of (justified) paranoia does exist for women. Wild is one of my favorite films of 2014.

The director made a movie in college once and the death of his rich uncle left him with a sizeable budget. The screenwriter (his best friend and fellow 7/11 employee) read a couple of westerns and picked up the odd phrase to make people think that he had done this before. The actors showed up for a paycheck and later fired their agents. Nobody thought to hire an editor.
They rented out an old west tourist trap, stole a premise out of an obscure comic book, and fooled the internet into thinking they made a decent movie. *******.

And as for the soundtrack, oh yes, I just loved the way they used songs in the movie. The Waterloo sequence, in particular, was all kinds of awesomeness (the fact that I'm a big fan of ABBA definitely helped:)). They absolutely hit the ball out of the park with that one.

While it's fair to question how smart it is for a young woman to take on a trek like that, once she's there in the middle of nowhere, and comes across men she does not know, it is very smart for her to have concern and be on guard. The rape paranoia is there, but it's not ridiculous. A girl needs to think about her safety first whenever and wherever she finds herself alone.

Johnny Depp gets caked in make up and made look like Skeletor's long lost little brother to play a psychotic Boston crime king. Besides Depp's respectable performance and sinister appearance, the rest of the film felt like the creation of someone who has watched The Departed and Mystic River 500 times each. There's nothing new here, and everything is so bland. The Goodfellas style execution scenes were the only highlights. It's not a terrible film, there are just too many better crime films out there.

VERY VERY DISAPPOINTING. My friend basically described it perfectly when he called it "Anti-climactic" The whole movie is a slow build up to absolutely nothing worthwhile. With such a thinly veiled twist that you can see from a mile away, and if savvy enough you can discern the twist 20 minutes in. The Village remains the only M.Night Shamalamadingdong movie I can watch. Not impressed.

Gate of Hell (1953)

With fighting going on, a woman is used as a decoy to help protect an emperor's daughter, with a samurai assigned to protect her. He takes the woman to his home, and innocently falls in love with her. Upon their return, he asks the powers that be for permission to marry her. He is shocked to learn that the woman is already taken. His decision to pursue her anyway is the main plot point of the movie. This movie is only about 90 minutes long, and it takes a while to get going, but I thought it was very good once it did. Gate of Hell won the top prize at Cannes, and also won an academy award.

I would say that this movie is best known for it's visuals. The beautiful colors are very vivid, and the whole movie is a feast for the eyes. That doesn't necessarily mean that I liked how it looked. I am used to these samurai movies being in black and white, and it took me some time to get used to the striking color. Overall, it's a pretty good flick.

Same thoughts as when originally watched, good scenes but a mess overall.

Caught this on TV last night, seen it loads of times (obviously :p) but a great way to start the year with a favourite.

A while back I wrote that I could watch Kurt Russell in anything. Now I am eating those words.
Damn that's harsh.
I haven't watched it in awhile, but I've seen this movie many times and have always enjoyed it.

Third Person 3.5 sometimes going into a movie completely blind is a wonderful situation. With this one a little knowledge would have helped some of the turbulence. Still, good movie. Solid acting by all. Knowing the ending would make for a more enjoyable rewatch.

Sherlock; The Abominable Bride 4 the opening to Sherlock's fourth season was a little all over the place bouncing back and forth from present day to 1885, but it was a VERY, VERY fun romp all the same.
VERY excited about this season; has I have been for all them.

- What I need to say more about this flick... everything is just perfect with this movie. The characters are great, the dialogues are marvelous and the direction is top-shape. Adrien Brody is character is just awesome and it remind me of myself in many many way. I love the struggles scenes and every black and white scene with Brody talking to the camera is amazing. Definitely a favorite of mine and Tony Kaye is totally genius, I wish he can do more movies because the guy is simply brilliant.

Season 6 was alright IMO, agreed though 1-3 were the best. I was watching that non clip show - clip show today, and i cracked up at Jeff pointing out to Annie that they could put that music over anything an make it look meaningful, then we get an intimate Pierce and Abed montage

Strickland denies male fantasy with a quaint study of the dominant- submissive dynamic. This level of cold, clinical filmmaking approaches Haneke's The Piano Teacher though retains its humanity to the very end.

Pretty fantastic documentary on the making of Apocalypse Now, one of the most awe-inspiring films of all time. I had no idea that Harvey Keitel was originally in the role that ultimately went to Martin Sheen, or that Larry Fishburne was only 14 years old during filming. A must see for fans of the movie.

Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015) by J.J. Abrams
My first impression is that it is a rehash of the old star war movies. The recurrent thematics of father vs. son, abandoned Jedi and the Death Star (Starkillerplanet) is deeply unoriginal. The dialogue is even more cheasy than the old ones and we couldn't help to laugh at the final scene. The movie itself plays on sentimentality, nostalgia and recognition of the viewer and that is probably the reason for its commercial succes, but that does not make it a great movie by my standards. On the other hand its not as terribad as Episode: I-III which were abominations.

Frankenstein (James Whale, 1931) - 3.5
A beautifully shot movie with lots of atmosphere and some quite effective moments in the last third.
