I've been short for time but this is the 3rd excellent 50's noir I've seen in the last month. Very cool with an unexpected ending.

The Collector (2009) - Marcus Dunstan
Like so many modern horror movies this is really well made but not actually very good. I don't really get the whole "torture porn" thing and this wasn't a particularly good example of the genre. It was lacking in creativity and was very poorly thought out. It was basically all in one house with traps set everywhere - but if you actually see a window turned into a guillotine chop a cat in in half ... Well, you could just walk over to the window, open it, climb out, and walk away ... Judging horror movies on silly parts of the plot is probably pointless but they should at least try to avoid being dumb. Overall I've rated it higher than it really deserves because I was actually pretty impressed with how it looked - nice use of colours.

Sure, the plot is predictable and the animation isn't the greatest, but I enjoyed this film more than I thought. It has legends, it has all the cool fantasy legends, and I grew up reading a lot of books about King Arthur and Merlin. Btw, Merlin > Gandalf + Dumbledore

Well it wasn't ****, which was a relief. It's weird I can't hate movies starring The Rock because he is just so likable. He still needs to work on his emotional chops, there is a certain scene in here that felt very forced. Other than that him and the rest of the cast was alright. I am one of those people that didn't hate 2012 like most did, it was an okay Disaster movie with obviously errors and such but I enjoy those movies purely for the spectacle. Obviously this movie is much better than 2012. For one this movie was a little bit more realistic than 2012. (And I'm using that term loosely) Nothing special but not crap either.

Freebie and the Bean (1974)

Raucous action-buddy-cop-comedy, starring James Caan (Freebie) and Alan Arkin (the Bean), who go to any lengths to get their guy. They'll chase 'em down on foot, in car, on motorcycle, running into every car in the way, damaging property, driving the wrong way down the highway, crashing their car into the third story of an apartment building, chasing another car into a parade where the bad guy runs into band members, causing traffic pileups and crashes, all in the name of getting their guy.

They confront a killer in the men's room while he's sitting on the toilet and when they see he has a gun, open up on him with four guns, riddling the door with holes and collapsing the door on his corpse. It's amazing that their bosses let this slide but that's part of the fun. One of the bosses is holding a card he ain't showing so he lets Freebie and Bean go out of their way to get the job done.

There is an attempt at something bittersweet near the end that ends up being another chance at hilarity and it succeeds. This movie never stops moving and Caan and Arkin are almost like a married couple, bickering all the way through, while obviously being the best of friends. Good, never-boring 70's fun. Loved it!

Easily the most depressing Pixar film since Toy Story 3. :bawling:

I don't know. It was well made but not very likable. Maybe I had the wrong expectations going in, I thought it was going to be funny. There was the odd sly adult joke which I appreciated, and I liked the glimpses into other characters' heads (but I wish there had been more of that).

Mardaani (2014) - Pradeep Sarkar
An Indian movie about human trafficking that appears to be be well thought of as far as I can tell ... but I thought it was terrible. It seemed like it was trying to be a gritty Hollywood crime movie but it was overly manipulative with a terrible script that was full of lines that were really just there to explain what was going on to the viewer. It is all topped off by an ending that I assume was meant to be somewhat "positive" with the woman who had been kidnapped exacting their revenge but it ended up being really unpleasant. Overall, this is just bad.

Batman & Robin (1997) - Joel Schumacher
Schumacher's decision to incorporate the tone of the TV series into a modern Batman film will obviously go down in history as one of the worst ever but I thought it was worth pointing out that Uma Thurman was the only one who seemed to actually get it - she was great and was the only worthwhile part of the film. Everything else was rubbish.

I don't really know how to rate a film like this. Sure, it's hugely influential and was ahead of its time but I'm in no position to really judge those things. So, I just rate films according to how much I like them. This is a collection of four stories about intolerance taken from different periods in history. It looks great and is truly an epic but it was way too long and two of the stories weren't particularly interesting. It's place in history makes it "great" but for me personally it was just "good".

Motel Hell

(1980, directed by Kevin Connor)

rating_3_5

More and more these days... I hate horror movies. But this is a horror movie from 1980 -- the beginning of the '80s. And a picture of a pig headed killer in flannel and overalls wielding a chainsaw was on the cover of a famous issue of Fangoria. I like chainsaws... I like '80s horror... I liked this movie. Basically. It's no Texas Chainsaw Massacre or Nightmare on Elm Street. It's really quite crappy. My rating is high for it. But I managed to get through it without turning it off. Barely. I liked the cast, though. Nancy Parsons, the mean gym teacher from the Porky's movies, was great as a horror villain. And Paul Linke was hot as the good cop who happens to be the brother of the cannibal killers. This one wins a little because it was kind of funny and "out there." I hope Captain Spaulding sees it.

Well, if you remember I gave a certain Fulci film a "rather" low rating. Look in your favorites if in doubt which one. :p

I just thought you'd be happy to see such high rating for the kind of exploitation "trash" that you said wasn't my thing. It is, but either it's good for me or really bad. Zombie Flesh Eaters might be my favorite exploitation...

Zodiac (2007)

An excellently crafted thriller from the master of them, David Fincher. I kinda had my doubts with this since it was 2 hours 40 min long and I didn't do so well with the last couple 2 and a half hour plus movies I've watched. This was one of those movies though that was very well-paced with no scene feeling like was too drawn out or getting boring.

Love the look of this movie also. 3 terrific performances from Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr, and Mark Ruffalo as well. Pretty much everything was very well-done!

Pensavo Fosse Amore Invece Era Un Calesse, Massimo Troisi, 1991.
I wonder if this movie is at all known outside of Italy. Massimo Troisi is probably best known for his role in The Postman, which I have actually never seen, before that he made a number of nice comedies in which he outlines his type of humor. Humor which is kinda hit or miss since it's very peculiar and relies heavily on his body language and his strong Neapolitan accent. I personally love his humor, and his take on life. This was not my favorite movie of his but it's still nice and funny, and offers a nice take on what love is. The title literally means "I thought it was love, but it was a horse cart instead", and as Troisi himself explained, stands for all those love stories which after a while reveal themselves to be...just not love. Something else, something entirely different. It could have been a chair, a door, a phone. So why not a horse cart? It's the story of a guy who doesn't really care about his girlfriend, up until the moment she breaks up with him. Then he does everything he can to win her back, only to realize, when he succeeds, than he doesn't love her anymore. Simple, but really well executed, even though the movie seems to be a little dragged along in some parts.
6/10

A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night, Ana Lily Amirpour, 2014.
Visually, this movie is stunning. Amirpour knows where to put her damn camera, knows how to move it around (or not move it at all), knows where to place the actors. The problem is that, if most of the times her competence leads to superb scenes (the one where the Girl follows people around, the one in front of the power plant, the in the Girl's room with the record playing), there are other times in which the movie is just plain boring, to be honest. It's like the movie is lacking a heart, and they tried to switch the heart with a beautiful, polished, silver replica of a heart. Neat, but still not a heart.
Still totally worth watching though. Again, some scenes are terrific, the setting is perfect, and the cat is the best.

THE LONGEST YARD (1974)

Guards vs the inmates. Classic prison film, also at the top of my sports films next to Rollerball (1975). Two movies that get sports right, hard-hitting & rough around the edges. Burt Reynolds, washed up pro quarterback, goes to prison for stealing his girlfriends car, resisting arrest, & generally being an azzhole. Burt rejects an offer to coach the prison guard semi-pro team, instead talking the warden into an exhibition game of prison inmates vs the guards

Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia (1974)

Finally got to see this cult classic. I found the beginning a little slow and uninteresting but man it sure does pick up the last hour or so. It was pretty much non-stop thrills and suspense all driven by a very unique plot. The second half made me appreciate the first half more after it was over. Great movie, just another reason why Sam Peckinpah is one of my favorite directors.

The Hawks and the Sparrows, Pier Paolo Pasolini, 1966.
Pasolini takes on an endless and aimless walk through many different aspects of italian society of that time. I really enjoyed up to after the part set in the 13th century. Especially the very beginning, with Toto' and Ninetto just walking and walking and walking talking of important things like life and death, is absolutely brilliant. After that I found its episodic structure to be a little annoying.
As usual, I can't decide if I like when directors use "real" people from the street to act in their movies. I understand the natural and spontaneous feeling they give to the movie, but it's not really for me.
The opening credits are definitely worth mentioning too.

Just about as great as I expected. The writing and the acting are top notch. The movie also looks fantastic with amazing camera work. The panning shots are spectacular. The only exception are the two or three car scenes, but I have to forgive them in older movies because everyone was doing it. Incredible how the story makes us think about the way we judge people. Very thought provoking and profound film. Probably already my second favorite movie surrounding the Holocaust.

Battle Royale, Kinji Fukasaku.
Uuuuuhm. I know it is considered a great movie. The fact is that, the way I see it, Kenta Fukasaku (the guy who wrote it) had a lot of good days and a few bad ones, and Kinji Fukasaku had a lot of bad days and a few good ones.
There are so many great ideas that are so poorly executed, some scenes that could have been great but look ridiculous because of how they were directed. I am not saying it was easy. Part of the greatness of the screenplay (I haven't read the novel) is how it tries to balance the absurd situation which the students (for the 2 or 3 people who do not know what this movie is about, it's where The Hunger Games came from. For the 1 or 2 people who do not know what The Hunger Games is, it's young kids killing each other) are forced into, and the normal, teenagerish conversations about high school crushes they still have despise all the killing and dying that happens around them.
Some of the students are even glad they can kill their peers, so they can take revenge on a boyfriend who has been stolen.
You need a really good director to balance out these elements, and in my opinion Fukasaku failed at it. The more so action scenes are pretty bad too, with one of the guys chasing people everywhere with an UZI and missing them from 2 inches away.
Such a pity, since when Kinji and Kenta good days collided, the results are admirable. The beginning of the Battle, when the students are still in the classroom and are just shoved away with a backpack and nothing else, certainly none of the glory they are teased with in The Hunger Games, is impressive. A shot of a hand shooting one of the students is pretty cool. Kitano is perfect.
Oh well!
5.5/10

Matthew Broderick plays a captain in the Civil War. After he gets injured in battle, he gets promoted to colonel, and he's put in charge of the first all black squad. Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman play two of those soldiers.

I don't think Broderick is a great actor, but I usually like him, and I think he's at his best in this. Washington and Freeman are terrific as usual. There's some great battle scenes in this movie and it's filmed very well. What makes it great though is how it shows the black men getting their chance in a white world. The colonel's support of these men, and how the men respond to him, makes the movie uplifting, and gives it it's emotion.

The characters and score are on another level and are what make this movie so great. It also has Leone's great settings and atmosphere. I think the story is a bit weak in spots and is what keeps me from going from love to one of my all time favorites.

I just finished watching Marketa Lazarová (Frantisek Vlácil, 1967). It was a nice, but quite difficult and dense, ride. In fact through the whole second hour of this film I remained two steps behind whatever thing that happened, the amount of characters, and subplots, and unclearly defined locations, makes the story difficult to follow, let alone appreciate. It gets better at the last 30 minutes, when I can finally catch up and enjoy it in the level of the fascinating first hour.

Plot considerations aside that may get clearer in a proper rewatch, every scene of this movie is a joy to watch and feel through, with some astounding cinematography and a great soundtrack that hits the right notes every time... I guess I would have enjoyed it more if the issues I had during the second hour trying to follow a continuity in the set of events hadn't been so damn distracting and frustrating.

Anyway, it sounds fine as a rating_3_5

Bloodsucking Bastards, Brian James O'Connell.
Yet another take on vampires, luckily a thoroughly entertaining one this time. In an office where everyone is lazy and absolutely unwilling to work, the best solution the managers can come up with is turning everyone into an hard working vampire. Only a couple people will manager to not be turned, and of course they will have to fight their way to beautiful 5 pm.
There are some pretty funny scenes, and Pedro Pascal plays a really good villain. The main guy is meh, but he has the right face for this kind of flick.
Time flies and the movie is over pretty fast, thanks to a fast pacing that never wastes time. The only complaint I have is about the gore level. Maybe because of the low budget, I feel like it could have been so much better under that aspect, especially considered the great idea of having the vampires explode after they are dead ("Wikipedia didn't mention that", one of the characters will say when this happens for the first time.). Instead, we only see the regular axe in the head and gallons of fake blood splashing on the actors.

Oh well, at least before the movie started they played the trailer for Deathgasm, which seems really promising under every aspect.

Rossellini strips away affection and nonsense melodrama, crafting a war film that feels objective rather than subjective. Most war films are cursed with a sense of jingoism or take the easy way out by presenting one side as victims and the other side as one-note villains. This director's ambivalence of perspective is shown, not just here-but in the other film of the trilogy Germany Year Zero. He shows sympathy for both the Italians and the Germans, the latter film showing how the German people suffered post-war. Of the Italian neo-realism giants, I prefer Rossellinin to Di Sica. The latter director, while talented, is too reliant on heavy-handed melodrama; to the extent, that many sequences ring false.

The Gift (2000)

This movie to me always seemed a bit underrated to me and I never saw this when it came out originally. The concept of the film is great and touches into areas which I don't think many people knew about back in 2000. Now it seems that most rural police departments use psychics, Cate Blanchett did well in the lead roll as well as Greg Kinnear. Odd casting choice with Keanu Reeves and Katie Holmes, both are very monotone actors and even though they played a different role of being a disliked character it still seemed bland. Overall the movie was pretty good and I was surprised Sam Raimi directed although you can see a few of his touches in it.

My rating may be slightly generous by maybe half a popcorn, but I had a lot of fun with it, even though it's kind of dated and the drama and writing is forced at times. I did like the story and characters, and the two worlds colliding worked very well. I was actually laughing a few times too. I think some people expect too much because they know what Capra is capable of. But this is a harmless little tale and whatever weight it doesn't have it doesn't want either. Good fun in my opinion.

Anatomy of a Murder (1959)

Super fine courtroom drama with James Stewart defending a soldier (Ben Gazzara) who killed the man who raped his wife (Lee Remick). Stewart is low key at first, playing the small town lawyer with the ease that totally fits Stewart's screen style. But when he gets in the courtroom, watch out! He does everything possible to defend his client and makes quite a ruckus in court, testing the judge's patience. Opposing him as as the district attorney is actor Brooks West whose character seems to be a bit in over his head. So, he asks the Assistant State Attorney General (George C. Scott) to help him out. And Scott is a fireball, getting right in the witnesses' face when he feels like it.

The beautiful Remick plays her character as very flirty and upbeat, hardly acting like a recent rape victim. Gazzara's character supposedly has a hot temper and it's put to the test twice in the movie. This could have been the end of the trial for Stewart but with the help of his assistant, played by a wonderful Arthur O'Connell, and the aide of his secretary, played by a whimsical Eve Arden, he prevails. He also has the important help of the murder victim's daughter, played by the lovely Kathryn Grant, also known in real life as Mrs. Bing Crosby.

The movie is filled with a lot of character actors you'll recognize, including Murray Hamilton, Orson Bean, and Ken Lynch. There is a great jazz soundtrack by Duke Ellington who also appears in a cameo as a pianist named "Pie Eye." The direction by Otto Preminger is very tight and concise...the end of scenes are not allowed to linger, the movie quickly moves on to the next scene, making sure that the 160 minute run-time never drags. Great movie and highly recommended.

Opposing him as as the district attorney is actor Brooks West whose character seems to be a bit in over his head. So, he asks the Assistant State Attorney General (George C. Scott) to help him out. And Scott is a fireball, getting right in the witnesses face when he feels like it.

Well, how to describe this?
Bale's performance is out of this world. What he did here is probably one of the best single performances of the last 50 years.
The script is also really good, with lots of potential to create a masterpiece. That doesn't mean I love the movie. I don't.
The direction is just a mess, despite some good moments. I never read the book but I can imagine it being a lot better than the movie. The story line is never clear, it just tries to confuse you just for the sake of it never letting you truly enjoy what you're watching. If that's the idea, sorry, doesn't work for me.
Any other actor instead of Bale in the main character and this would be a horrible movie. With Bale, it's decent at least.

And that ending? Nah...

It's been twelve years (apparently) since I last saw this, but I remember Monster being a really good film, with two great performances from Theron and Ricci. I'm pretty sure I'd seen both the Broomfield documentaries by then, though the second came out that year (I think) so it might've been close.

American Psycho is not a good film. Bale's not good and neither is the script. Not that it's helped by the source material. Other than that, I think I agree with you, neiba. :D

I often like most of the films I watch, as I try to stay focused on the movie and not trying to guess what's next all the time. I would annoy myself if I did that. Yet I'm very stubborn with watching new movies that people say are awesome. Most of the time they are, but it takes me years to actually say okay, let's watch it.

It's exactly what happened with The Illusionist. People were like blababla awesome blabla magical blabla great. I was like, bah just another movie about magicians, so I never watched it. Until today.

I think the director wanted something that would stay in your head, to be remembered. Well congratz, you made it happen.

And the plot twist, I mean probably most of the people saw it coming from a mile away, I didn't. As I said I like to be focused on the movie, not on what's about to happen.

It was great, the plot twist made me nod my head in approvation and smile. The whole movie was really entretaining and I found myself to be completly lost in it. Even more when the **** went down haha :)

Magicians are supposed to be fun, entretaining, surprising. I found all of that in this film and I love it. The actors were right on set, and Edward was perfect, I could not imagine another actor for this role.

I think I found another of my favorite movies right here. And I thought The Prestige was great, but I found myself to have enjoyed this way more.

For each a different color haha. And as BubbleBee said in their review, this movie is no trick, it's magic

La Haine (1995) *rewatch*

Just as captivating the second time as it was on my first watch. Probably my favorite urban crime film—it does just about everything flawlessly. Being in black and white was a smart choice and helped set the mood for the bleak atmosphere of the film. The relationship between Vinz, Said, and Hubert is very interesting to watch as well as the events that unfold during the film.

On another note, I was way overdue for an avatar change and thought what the heck I'll get a La Haine avy!

Still debating whether or not it might deserve a 3.5 as its admittedly familiar story is fleshed out with some decent performances, good cinematography, and the odd strong moment (such as the bounty hunter's campfire story), but then again maybe 3 is the new 3.5 for me these days.

I'm not much a fan of modern horror films but I enjoyed this. The idea to not make this as a remake or a sequel, but to set it in a world in which the original movie exists as a record of the original killings, was a good one and worked really well. It's also very stylishly directed which helped it to pay tribute to seventies slasher films. A surprisingly well made and entertaining film,

I find it difficult to judge a concert movie as a movie - it really comes down to whether I like the performer and whether they put in a good performance. Demme is a well known director but does he really play a part in whether someone likes this or not? I like Young and he performs well so it's a great movie ... Demme could make exactly the same film with Celine Dion and I would consider it to be one of the worst movies ever made ... Anyway, this is great. Young has such an amazing voice and is one of the great songwriters so I'd recommend it to anyone.

2/10 - Very disappointed. The worst film I ever saw on TCM, though it's still the best channel for film BY FAR. I'm especially disappointed because the theme of this film (dehumanization) is a theme very important to me. The description seemed great, and I put this film ahead of many others, and it was a total dud. I had the same feeling after the last film I saw in a (drive-in) theatre, "Elysium"

Where the hell is the script? Nixon wrote much of it himself (speech excerpts). This film is just "looks" and "special effects" - I just hope this film doesn't make me avoid sci-fi altogether.

Memento

Everything I wanted Inception to be. It's puzzling, twisty, and leaves you on the edge of your seat. This is finally an actual Nolan film that I can say I loved (Outside of the Batman movies, but that was mostly because of Bale and my love for the character). The way he told the story was just so perfect and finding out that he came up with this out of thin air was jaw dropping... or atleast knowing his brother did.

If you like thrillers, I strongly recommend this to you. I like to guess what the ending is, and I think I had 5 different guesses the entire movie and all 5 were completely wrong. I can already tell that it's going to still carry its weight after rewatches as I still can't fully understand everything that went on.

Surprisingly, Memento reminded me of American Psycho. It was a great character study, and by the end showed how f*cked up the main person really is. It obviously isn't as enjoyable to me as American Psycho.. atleast yet, but I can say that it was my favorite Nolan outside of the Batmans.

It's hard to give really high ratings to first watches, which is why usually i'd cap it at 4's if I really loved a first watch and then come back to it soon to get a true rating on how it held up after a 2nd watch.

My fourth Kurosawa. I am not admitting defeat yet but so far the man is not for me. This movie is all about the human condition, so it is primed for me to love it. I just find nothing to grab a hold of. The overacting bothers me. I find the characters and dialogue very dull. The plot itself is good and I like the setting of the temple in the rain. The final scene and the story from the dead man's point of view were okay for me. I am just not finding a lot compelling about Kurosawa's films but will keep watching a couple a year until something sticks.

Lynch has been a very mixed bag for me. A couple of his movies I think are pretty good and there are a couple I really disliked. This is my favorite by far. It is no surprise because it is all but a Twin Peaks prequel and I loved the first season and a half of that show. Hopper is outstanding. The music is really good and there are some great visual flourishes. The second half hour lost me a bit but it came back around in a big way. Will definitely check this out again and see if I can bump that star rating a notch.

Rio Lobo (1970)

Not my favorite John Wayne movie and certainly not my favorite Howard Hawks movie by a mile. This is his third take on basically the same story he told in Rio Bravo and El Dorado, but this is nowhere near as good as those. Still, after a slow, unnecessary first half hour involving some of the characters in the Civil War it takes a turn and gets better. Wayne is good, and Jack Elam is great once he appears. Almost all the other actors in the film are wooden as a stump. Sherry Lansing, who was once the head of Paramount Pictures, has a small part in the film and is not bad and was quite beautiful in her youth. I give it the rating I do because of Wayne, Hawks, and Elam.

Lighthearted spy spoof with a suave James Coburn as Derek Flint, who works as a spy for the government and stumbles onto a plot by an organization of women who plan to load a space platform with nukes so they can rule the world by threat. Lots of laughs and Coburn is loads of fun as the genius, martial arts wielding, dolphin-talking (have to see to appreciate) spy. And you have not lived until you've seen Lee J. Cobb in drag!

George C. Scott is the star of this extremely laid back comedy about a plan to rob a bank, which then turns into a plan to steal the bank because it's temporarily housed in a trailer while the actual bank is being repaired. Good stuff, with support from Joanna Cassidy, Sorrell Booke (Boss Hogg from "The Dukes of Hazzard"), Clifton James, Frank McRae, Don Calfa, (all great character actors) and a very young Bob Balaban. Neat to see George C. Scott do some fun 70's fluff.

Smiles of a Summer Night (1955)

4.5-

I didn't know anything about this movie except that it was directed by Ingmar Bergman, and it was labeled as a comedy. My expectations were very limited. Once again, I learned not to doubt a great director.

https://filmgrab.files.wordpress.com/2014/12/2522.jpg?w=370&h=

There's a few main characters in this movie. You have the older distinguished lawyer and his very young second wife. You have his son who is studying to become a minister, and who has a bit of a relationship with the hot Swedish servant. Then you have the lawyer's ex-girlfriend; a famous actress who he dated between his two wives. She is currently having an affair with a married army officer. So the lawyer and his wife, the son and the servant, the actress, her lover and his wife, all get invited by the mother of the actress to spend a night at their country home. Complications arise. I enjoyed all of the characters and performances, it's filmed beautifully, and has an excellent musical score.

https://filmgrab.files.wordpress.com/2014/12/5321.jpg?w=370&h=

This is the earliest Bergman movie I have seen to date. It is not at all like his other famous films that I have seen. I thought it was not unlike a classic Hollywood movie, except in a foreign language. I'm wondering if he had more movies like this, or if he just suddenly and radically changed his style. Either way, I now have even more respect for this great director, now that I have seen this type of variety. This is a highly acclaimed film; it's on the Ebert great movie list, and in 2005, Time magazine named it one of the top 100 movies since 1923. I am very curious as to how other members feel about this movie, especially big Bergman fans.

Il Sorpasso, Dino Risi.
One of my favorite italian movies of all time, it just never gets old. Trintignant and De SIca are simply perfect, it's funny, it's heart warming and heart breaking. You really can't ask a lot more from a movie. I tend to focus more on Trintignant's character but this time I tried to focus on outgoing, friendly De SIca, and he is such a deep character! The way he gets all serious when they are going to see his wife, how he hints at his loneliness every now and then, and then just tries and forget about it, his deep humanity. Sigh, I wish I were more like him (possibly without ending up...well, you know).
9/10

Nebraska, Alexander Payne.
I watched it right after Il Sorpasso and omg. It's like eating a dish your love, let's say lasagna, and having no room left for dessert but then you do not want to be rude and you accept the dessert anyway and you are amazed by it and you can't stop eating it.
So so so so good. I have watched other movies by Payne and I have always found them good but with something that annoyed me. In this case, I just loved it from its first shot to its last. What I found especially interesting was how brave they were to not showing us basically any moment in which the old man is less of an numb minded *******. So many times his son tries to dig some feelings out of him, but nope, nothing emerges. Jesus, the more I thing about it, the saddest it gets.
9/10

John Dies at the End, Don Coscarelli.
Meh. I am all in for weird, but not when it's all over the place. I don't think I should watch anything else from Coscarelli to be honest. I will always thank him for Bubba Ho Tep, and that's what I want to remember him for.
4.5/10

We Are The Best, Lukas Moodyson.
Awesome! A movie on friendship and teenage anger set at the very edge of teenagerhood. The two main characters are two 12\13 year old kids who are punk\act as punk\think they are punk. They know who Brezhnev is and they question the existance of God (but one of them believes only in ketchup), but deep down they just want to have fun and mess with their instruments and be the best. And they are, ******* it!
I like to imagine it as a prequel to SLC Punk, eheh.

Theodora Goes Wild (1936)

Irene Dunne and Melvyn Douglas star in this screwball comedy about a small-time goody-two-shoes, Theodora, and her two gossiping aunts who find their lives turned upside down when the scandalous romance novel that is being banned by the local library is found to have been written by Theodora herself. Melvyn Douglas is the artist for the cover of the book and he sees Theodora in the big city at the publishing office and is immediately smitten. So, he follows her to her hometown and is chiefly the one who upends her life. Soon, she follows him back to the big city to turn the tables on him. It's all very funny and Dunne is the unquestioned star of the piece, playing it straight, screwball, and even working in a song at the piano (she's got quite a nice voice). Good stuff and recommended.

Good John Wayne film set in the South Seas after WWII on an island paradise where Wayne and two war buddies (Lee Marvin and Jack Warden) who fought the Japanese on the same island years back have settled, with Warden raising the three children of his late island bride. Warden is also the island doctor and happens to be away on the other side of the island when his grown daughter from a prewar marriage announces her imminent arrival. Played by actress Elizabeth Allen, she is a Bostonian blue blood who is also very snobbish. Wayne, to help his friend Warden save face until he can return, pretends the doc's children are his. Of course, Wayne and Allen, despite their differing ways, begin to fall for each other. Allen is no dummy and she begins to suspect things are not on the up-and-up. Meanwhile, Lee Marvin, well he mainly gets drunk, trashes stuff and fights Wayne every chance he gets even though they're friends. It's directed by John Ford, so you know you've got to have a few scenes with fisticuffs. Also along for the fun is Dorothy Lamour, Cesar Romero, and massive Mike Mazurki whom you'll know if you look up his image. There is nary a dull moment in this one. Check it out.

The Bank Dick (1940)

W.C. Fields is awesome here as a loafing husband who lives with his wife, children, and nagging mother-in-law. He goes out, not necessarily to find work, but find it he does, first as the director of a movie (really), then as the "bank detective" of the title, a job he stumbles into by stopping a robbery. The big "plot" of this movie involves W.C. getting his future son-in-law (who works at the same bank as W.C.) into trouble money-wise and buying time so the son-in-law can refund the money he borrowed back to the bank. W.C. buys time with the bank examiner (a hilarious Franklin Pangborn), and has to fend off one of the original robbers who got away but doesn't give up so easily. There is a extremely funny car chase at the end and needless to say, all ends well for W.C. and company. A true comedy classic.

Not a bad movie but really really preachy...
The cinematography is beautiful, the acting is really solid, there are some sincere scenes, specially between Ian and Sofi (Michael Pitt and Astrid Bergès-Frisbey) and the script is well written.
Although I think the entire message was so artificially pushed against me, I felt as I was talking with some of my extremely spiritual friends who annoy me a bit whenever they try to talk me into doing reikiand stuff like that. It's an intriguing movie, overall, but it could be a lot better.

I feel embarrassed on the behalf of everyone involved with this film... Colin Farrell seemed to be the only one who "got it" and embraced the camp of this movie, which was far from succeeding as a serious movie in any way, anyway.

The romance was pathetic and cringe-worthy, the CGI was awful and overused, the wirework obvious and outdated, the story was bad and had no proper middle or end, it was poory written and sloppy directed.

The few reasons this doesn't get a lower score is mostly small insignificant little scenes or short moments and then Farrell as Bullseye. Rest was so bad it made me blind to the fact that it may be worse than I actually rated it.

I am a very big fan of Mike Birbiglia, and I think he is one of the funniest comedians today. I was surprised to see that this movie was actually based on a true story, and it made the movie much more interesting when you put it into perspective. Birbiglia stared in, directed, and wrote this movie, and he did a good job with all three. A very enjoyable movie.

Jimmy Stewart plays the title character, and he's good, but I'm having a hard time getting used to him in Westerns. I'm also having a hard time with these 50's Westerns after loving so many from the 60's. After a promising start, it was just ok for me.

Welcome To Me is possible ( no, definitely ) a Zero out of 10. The movie is a spoof , involving a humorous imitation of something; in this case characteristic features of mental illness are exaggerated for comic effect . Mean spirited, grossly inaccurate, stupid, annoying : some adjectives describing this piece-of-trash movie. If you're going to spoof mental illness then at least incorporate kindness.

The Wolfpack
(2015, d. Crystal Moselle)

rating_3

I'm not entirely sure what to make of this one. This documentary focuses on the story of the Angulo family, with specific attention paid to the six brothers of the clan. What sets their lives apart from the norm and makes them prime material for a documentary is that they have been near prisoners in their own home their entire lives. Their father basically turned their New York apartment into a prison, keeping them shut away from the world, and only allowing them outside on the rarest of occasions. And even then it was for brief spells of time and under strict supervision where they were not allowed to talk to anyone. For any given year you can count the times they ventured outside on one hand. In fact there was one year they didn't leave the house on a single occasion. It's not a million miles away from stumbling upon a tribe in the Amazon rainforest that had never had contact with any kind of outside civilisation. Except this tribe had somehow been living in the middle of New York, one of the most densely populated, vibrant cities in the world. It boggles the mind. The film details their sort of 'coming out' so to speak. For most people their act of teenage rebellion is to get their ears pierced or to get drunk. For the Angulo brothers it is to reject their father's tyrannical rules and step foot outside of their front door.

The story is fascinating. The subjects are extremely likeable. As for its merits as a documentary however I have reservations. The Wolfpack is a film that raises a lot more questions than it answers, resulting in a very frustrating experience. It marks the directorial debut of the lady behind the camera, Crystal Moselle, and you're left to wonder if a more experienced hand could have delivered a more satisfying chronicle of the story. A more seasoned documentarian may have been able to dig down and get more answers. On the other hand however a more seasoned individual may not have been able to get this access or tell this story to begin with. Given the dictatorial nature of the father and the isolated nature of the boys a more probing, confrontational approach may not have gone down well. However it doesn't stop you from asking numerous questions about what we're seeing; how exactly could this happen? What drove their father to undertake such drastic action? What was the father's initial reaction when Moselle showed up with her camera? There are just so many omissions. We never really get the story behind it all, having to settle with vague allusions to incidents such as physical abuse that the father doled out to his wife and kids, but it's never followed up on.

There's also some troubling, unsettling moments and implications to be found. When one of the boys talks about his relationship with his father he talks about how it's impossible for him to forgive someone who has done what he did. The way he talks, the words he uses and the look on his face certainly leads your mind to imagine some very dark connotations. As his 'sins' are never fully expounded upon we're left somewhat unsure exactly what to think of their father. Was he trying to do what he felt was right to protect his family and his judgement was just shockingly bad? Was he quite simply an evil despot? Or was there some element of mental illness involved? He certainly seems extremely paranoid about the threats of the outside world whilst also coming across as fairly delusional on occasion as he talks about being like God and how his power is making people do what he wants. Let's just go with the most 'positive' of those options and assume that he was merely well-intentioned but made a horrible misjudgement. Even after that you then have to ask where is the line between allowing a parent to raise their children as they see fit and having to step in to protect the children?

So there are certainly a number of dark alleys the film could have explored. Moselle instead chooses to push some of the more positive, life-affirming aspects of the story however. Chief amongst these is probably the importance and influence that movies can have on our lives, though for very few people will that have been as true as it is for these six brothers. It's often said that movies act as a form of escapism. I'm guessing that sentiment has never been truer than it is for these siblings. Given their entire existence basically consists of a single four-bedroom apartment it is through movies that they gain their main experience of the outside world. Outside of their own family, the people that these brothers know best are the likes of Vincent Vega, Jules Winnfield, Mr. Pink and Batman. The boys love their movies, even going to great lengths to re-enact some of their favourite movies; Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, The Dark Knight etc. Hell even their fashion sense appears to have been inspired by Reservoir Dogs; watching the six brothers strutting around in black suits and shades it's impossible not to be immediately reminded of Tarantino's directorial debut. As for recreating movies they go to great lengths to create terrific-looking props and costumes. Their Batman suit, made from cereal boxes and yoga mats, is particularly impressive.

Beyond that the film focuses on the growth of the brothers as we watch them gradually get out from under their father's control and begin to live their own lives. The boys make for extremely likeable subjects. As a result of their isolation they seem like rather naïve and gentle souls. We revel in each one of their victories, no matter how small it may seem to the average person. When they do venture outside the way that they see the world can be very endearing, and is frequently moulded by their cinematic upbringing. For example when they walk through a grove of trees they comment that it's like a forest from the Lord of the Rings films, while a beach evokes Lawrence of Arabia. And on their first ever visit to an actual cinema (to view David O. Russell's The Fighter) one of the brothers talks excitedly about how the money he paid for his ticket is going straight to Russell and Christian Bale. Their development also seems to inspire their mother who likewise seems to grow in terms of strength.

So as a story it's fascinating but the documentary itself is frustrating. It introduces us to an amazing story but then leaves you wanting so much more. I also found myself wanting to see a lot more of the brothers' impressive efforts at reenacting films. The brief clips they show from the likes of Pulp Fiction are great fun. It's also a story that is just begging for a 'where are they now' follow-up a few years down the line.

I thought I had seen this before but I had only seen parts of it. Didn't matter because it had been too many years anyway. Leone is a brilliant story teller in every single aspect. Visuals, sound, characters, and dialogue. Everything is as it should be. Still have two of his westerns to go, one is nominated for the HOF so I will be seeing it soon. I'm just blown away. This movie is very long so I don't know if I will get to it again soon, but I want to.

Political thriller about adultery and murder with Russell Crowe as a reporter, and Benny Affleck stretching himself as a cheating husband. The film's impressive cast also includes Hellen Mirren, Rachel McAdams, Robin Wright, Jeff Daniels, and Jason Bateman.

I think this movie probably has issues; for instance, it seemed to be directed and edited just a shade unevenly. The plot is fairly simple, although it doesn't play out that way from the start. It's ok though, because I didn't watch this like it was a Hall of Fame movie, meaning with a critical eye. It's Saturday night with the wife and a few drinks, and I just wanted to enjoy myself. Crowe deserves much of the credit. He's the big dog in this and he does an excellent job. I wouldn't call this a great movie, but I was thoroughly engrossed and entertained.

I think most people know what this is about, that a shy young man has a relationship with a sex doll. It doesn't go for raunchy humor, although it is humorous. It is sweet and touching, a little low-key for me to love it, but I think worth watching for most people. Ryan Gosling does a good job, as does the rest of the cast. The doll is actually pretty sexy, and I would certainly hit it.

I'm not a very big fan of Kubrick, and this is his only film to make my list. This is by far one of the smartest movies I have ever seen, and I have been meaning to read the original Peter George novel for a while. All of the performances in this film are fantastic, especially from Peter Sellers, who gives probably the greatest comedic performance of all time in this film. I like to see this movie as three stories (the plane, the war room, and the military base), all incredibly interesting in their own way. Each has great characters, memorable lines, and fantastic acting. This is defiantly one of the funniest, smartest, and most well-crafted movies of all time.

It takes a good while to get going, but suddenly it hits you like a hard snow storm and begins to elevate towards a climatic peak... Unfortunately the movie is never intense enough or daring enough and the emotions gets a bit lost in its own blizzard. It can feel forced at times, but thankfully the acting expertise keeps things authentic and intriguing throughout - especially towards the end. I really wished this wasn't just a black on white movie inspired by a true story, but it kind of falls flat as a whole.

That said, those exciting scenes in the extreme weather conditions and watching the mountain having the upper hand is truly intense when it's at its uppermost level - and watching it in IMAX makes those particular scenes feel like it is destined to be watched in that format and that format alone... I just wish the story would've dug deeper into the characters and perhaps made at least one character more central, instead of flying above the assemble and only pick a little in one or two characters, merely revealing the outer layer. Again, the acting and intense sequences saves it a bit, but it had more potential than what it fulfilled and it didn't quite reach the top for me.

A Streetcar Named Desire (1951)

3.5

I watched this not that long ago, and while I thought it was very good, I thought that I could or should love it. After my second viewing, I feel the same way.

This movie has good power, but I don't think I'm a big fan of movies based on plays, or at least movies that you can easily tell are based on plays. Vivien Leigh won an Oscar for her role, but her performance is uneven for me, maybe a little over the top at times. The rest of the cast; Brando, Malden, and Hunt, are terrific. The story is a huge strength.

I liked Olly Alexander in this but overall it was just too awkward, self-consciously hipster and irritating. At times it didn't really make sense. They should have just made a couple of music videos to go with the songs, because this didn't really work as a musical film.

I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. Now the writing ain't best and some of the character motivation makes no sense, but the comedic elements and the action made it quite enjoyable. It was a very....strange movie but it strangely worked for me. And Kristen Stewart was pretty good, shedding that Twilight shell.

Life Itself (2014)

I'm not sure how good this documentary is if it's about somebody you have no interest in, but it's about a man, Roger Ebert, who I've always been a big fan of.

I grew up in Chicago, so I grew up with Ebert. I read his reviews in the paper since I learned how to read, and I've watched his shows for as long as I can remember. As cool as it was to get a glimpse of the man's life behind the career, it was equally as tough to watch his last days unfold. It was awesome seeing clips of his old reviews of movies like Full Metal Jacket and Apocalypse Now, and seeing how his rivalry with fellow critic Gene Siskel grew into a special friendship. The movie gives an insightful look at Ebert's early single days, all the way to his days as a family man. Ultimately, this is an emotional look at a legend.

Scream (1996) 4
In honor of the late Wes Craven, I'm rewatching my personal favorite slasher series of his. I didn't watch this one until I was about 6-7 so I was a little late to the party. I've always felt Matthew Lillard really shined in this movie, although when you rewatch it, it kind of loses its touch since you know whats going to happen. Still love the play Craven did parodying himself essentially, always love that when he does that during these films.

Scream 2 (1997) 3
This one was a step down imo, the twist at the end and Jaime Kennedy's character are probably the highlight of the movie.

Scream 3(2000) 3.5
I enjoyed this one much more than the second one, still not as good as the first though. The movie set wasn't a terrible change or anything but I just thought the tension was better, now the twist at the end of this one was meh to me but the overall atmosphere of the movie was just much better imo.

i'm gonna watch the 4th one here soon. I was also thinking of giving the tv show a chance if it is alright.

Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence - 3

Well, I didn't hate it. Like its predecessor, it's going to take a while to process. I am unsure whether or not the deliberate blending of CG animation and line-drawing animation works all that well in the film's favour.

The CG was pretty horrible indeed. I think it's one of the worst Oshii films. Still very good but not at the level of gems like Patlabor 2.

Miyamoto Musashi (1961) - Tomu Uchida
The first in a somewhat forgotten series of six films tracing the life of Miyamoto - a well known figure from Japan's history it seems. This film is basically about him learning to become a samurai and it's a role made for a Mifune or a Nakadai ... but unfortunately they aren't in it. The cast is still pretty good with, among others, Chieko Naniwa and Rentaro Mikuni who have had supporting roles in many classic films from that era. This is quite a restrained Samurai film and whilst it was well made it didn't really engage me. It was decent but nothing more.

Mogambo (1953)

Clark Gable stars as a game trapper in Kenya, who gets an unexpected guest at his camp in the (fine) form of Ava Gardner. They romance of course, and all of Clark's employees approve of the new arrival. But Clark doesn't want a woman hanging around (fool!) and sends her down river with the captured animals. So...along comes a documentary maker and his wife (Grace Kelly), who are all prim and proper British till Kelly falls for Gable, too. He starts to romance her behind the hubby's back, then Ava returns, her boat having run aground.
There's jealousy, snide barbs thrown by Ava, Clark punching out an incompetent worker, natives threatening to attack, animals threatening to attack, cute baby animals, attempts at catching baby gorillas for the zoo, clueless hubby unaware that his wife has the hots for Clark, and just tension, tension, tension. Directed by John Ford but far from his best. Still it's entertaining and when you've got the one-two punch of Ava Gardner and Grace Kelly, or vice-versa, you've got a winner.

Dumb and Dumber To (2014)

While nowhere near as good as the first movie, this sequel is nowhere near as bad as I'd heard. The 20-year gap in stories is explained at the first, with I thought was a fairly funny joke. The story concerns Harry (Jeff Daniels) needing a kidney transplant and getting Lloyd (Jim Carrey) to help him track down a daughter that Harry never knew he had. Again, as in the first movie, they run afoul of bad guys (Laurie Holden and Rob Riggle) who want to do away with them and the girl they're looking for so they can get Holden's husband's inheritance. Once again, the two stars' stupidity fouls up the plans of the villains. Plus, there's mistaken identity, a character who uses camouflage ala "skin art" where they blend into everyday surroundings like a rock wall or a soda machine without someone knowing they're there, the young lady in question they're searching for being a smoking young hottie, an 80's-90's star making an appearance as the girl's mom and a great death involving someone in a hearse.

I laughed quite a bit throughout this movie. I didn't feel it was just a cash grab. I like most Farrelly Brothers' movies so this one worked for me.

Across the Pacific (1942)

Take cast members of The Maltese Falcon, Humphrey Bogart, Mary Astor, Sydney Greenstreet, and the director, John Huston, and you've got all the elements for a winner. It's not a classic like their earlier movie, but it's still pretty compelling stuff. Set before WWII, Bogie plays a man who's kicked out of the American Army and refused service in the Canadian military because of his supposed theft of money. Is he really guilty or is he undercover? If you know Bogie, you know the answer. He gets passage on a Japanese steamer which is where he meets Astor and Greenstreet and few other characters who figure into the proceedings. It's mainly tension and espionage, with the big action saved for the final third. I liked it quite a bit, and I think if you like Bogart even a little, you'll enjoy it.

Entourage is one of my all-time favourite TV Shows so I was incredibly anxious to watch this!
It may have a empty plot, with almost no actual narrative happening during 100 minutes, but who cares? It made what I was hoping for, it kept the series spirit and that's the most important thing! Seeing all the group reunited again was amazing especially Ari, probably the coolest guy on TV recent history!
It may receive some extra points for nostalgy but I freaking loved it!

Also, that last scene after the credits... Sequel?
