I thought it was pretty good sci-fi. Its questions about what constitutes identity and "life" are increasingly relevant, and the question of whether humanity and mortality go hand in hand is interesting.
Good sci fi isn't just about asking questions, you also need relatable characters to whom these questions are relevant. That way you show how the questions are relevant to us. Every good sci fi story has that: Book of the Long Sun, Blade Runner, 2001, Solaris, or even mixed sci-fi like Idiocracy or vidya like Deus Ex. You name it. When your characters are these unfeeling automatons with just one personality trait that's explained to you outright instead of shown through their actions, the questions will feel pointless. Symbolism of reflections and children's bodies falls flat too.

As for the imagery, I was referring to the bit where the MC tries to rip apart the spider tank (you know what I'm talking about). I really could've lived the rest of my life without seeing that.

Widely acclaimed as a masterpiece, it's hard to disagree. An intense character study and an exploration of America's two most powerful forces at their most unrestrained; Capitalism and Religion, greed and God. Forever bound together, grappling with each other, opposing and complimenting each other. Towering performance from Daniel Day-Lewis who dominates the film. Paul Dano is also excellent. Solid work from the whole cast actually. There's a stark beauty to the cinematography and the music compliments the film perfectly. This is only my second viewing but it is a film that demands a lot more to fully appreciate it.

Overall an exceptionally crafted motion picture. Intelligent, compelling and unsettling. Is it a masterpiece? Quite possibly.

Documentary by Jim Jarmusch about The Stooges....proto-punk pioneers. Excellent interviews and footage that gave me an insight into a band I've been into since I was young. Its a docu so follows usual format on interviews/footage but the human side of some of the band members passing away is really well captured. Needless to say...bitchin' soundtrack!!! :p

Film: Rocky
Watched: 22nd August 2020
Year of release: 1976
Format: Blu-ray
Directed by: John G Avildsen
Run time: 2hrs
Starring: Sylvester Stallone, Talia Shire, Burt Young, Carl Weathers, Burgess Meredith
Rating: 5

The best picture winner of 1977, Rocky is about a journeyman boxer from Philadelphia that gets a surprise shot at the heavyweight title.

Rocky is my favourite film of all time. It stands out a mile from the rest of the franchise. The other films are increasingly about the opposing fighter and overcoming adversity, but the first one is about so much more.
In this film - the result of the fight pales into insignificance compared to other things and this is beautifully captured in the final scene.

https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/c_fill,g_auto,h_740,w_1100/v1555360304/shape/mentalfloss/rocky_primary.jpg?itok=fjm8_n3Z

The story of Rocky is one of beauty, it's an underdog story with depth.
Rocky's career matches his life - he tries his best but doesn't seem to get beyond just getting by.
Rocky is a love story masquerading as a sports drama, and that could be argued about the whole franchise.

The characters are superbly crafted, and each has been shaped by the toughness of the Philadelphia streets, and this is shown brilliantly. Each shows the scars of their journey.
The acting is simply tremendous - Stallone is quality and convincing as the tough, simple and vulnerable Rocky, but for me Talia Shire is the standout in her role as Adrian, SHe captures the character perfectly and uses silence more effectively that words, it really is incredible.

The score is simply outrageous, and for me, 'Going the distance' is the greatest piece of music ever written for a film. Goosebumps every single time.

The cinematography of this film is equally as excellent too, and often overlooked, but it wonderfully mirrors the tough Philadelphia streets and the lives of the characters spectacularly.

I won't argue that most of the characters were deeply developed. But I did like the character of the Puppet Master. For me, the mystery/thriller element of it was compelling enough.

As for the imagery, I was referring to the bit where the MC tries to rip apart the spider tank (you know what I'm talking about). I really could've lived the rest of my life without seeing that.

Gotcha.

I just think that there's enough technical ability in the film paired with a decent (if well-worn) sci-fi premise to merit much more than a failing grade.

Not sure how accurate this is but it's an entertaining look at the run up to the making of and production of "Psycho"..I really enjoyed it with the Studio battles and star casting backwards and forwards. The performances all ring true especially Helen Mirren as Alma Reville who contributed so much to her husbands success. Scarlett Johansson is also ultra-lovable as Janet Leigh.

Should have bundled these all together in same post like some of our more learned MOFOS:)

Steady film about the Serbian-American visionary Nikola Tesla. I knew about the tussles with Edison and the patent issues he had. Basically Edison had the press and Tesla did not. Portrayed here by Ethan Hawke (a great choice) it puts together the efforts of Tesla to bring his vision to the masses whilst being rooted in innovation not advertisement. Liked it, could have been a few hours longer to delve into the entire tale (Elactrical Engineer myself :))

Low key and interesting British drama. A trainee vet comes home to her dads farm after a family tragedy to realise that things are worse than she had imagined. About respective responsibilities. A bit of a something in the woodshed idea and the performances are strong enough to pull you to the conclusion. Better than average.

Johnny Guitar, 1954

Loved it.

Vienna (Joan Crawford) owns a saloon in a small town in the West. An old flame of hers, the titular Johnny Guitar (Sterling Hayden), arrives at her behest. Vienna faces a lot of hostility from the locals, in particular a man who owns a ton of land and a woman named Emma (Mercedes McCambridge) who is jealous because her crush--the Dancing Kid--has a thing for Vienna. When the Dancing Kid and his little gang make trouble, the town jumps on the chance to make Vienna guilty by association.

How did I love this movie? Let me count the ways:

1) I am a total sucker for a "pacifist" western. Something like Destry Rides Again where avoiding violence is seen as being more desirable than just shooting anything that moves. In this film, both Vienna and Johnny have this element to their characters. Vienna prefers to talk her way out of trouble and make peace (without backing down). Johnny doesn't even carry a gun. Vienna is repeatedly clear about not wanting to initiate violence/killing, and Johnny himself does his best to avoid it. In fact, one of the most important things that Johnny does doesn't even involve a single punch.

2) Related to the above, the film does a great job of skewering the stereotype of what it means to be a man, and the idea of violence being "manly". One of the main ways that the film signals a character being immature or a villain is that they quickly jump to violence. Bart, a hotheaded member of the Kid's gang, is quick on the draw. And the youngest member of the gang, Turkey, tries to show that he's "a man" by drawing his gun and shooting things.

3) Related, again, to both points above, the film does something really cool and progressive: namely, it espouses universal values that aren't connected to being a man or a woman. It's not like "Men should be rugged and brave and women should be comforting and patient and loving." Instead it admires bravery, intelligence, loyalty, and toughness in male and female characters; and on the flip side it condemns selfishness, violence, greed, and jealousy in both male and female characters.

4) I loved the character of Vienna, and I loved the way that the film helps us to understand that she is the main protagonist. Early in the film, Johnny gets in a brawl with Bart outside of Vienna's saloon. You expect the action to stay with Johnny--the swaggering cowboy who just rode into town--but instead the camera goes back inside for a long conversation between Vienna and the Kid. We see the result of the brawl, but the message has been sent: Johnny is a supporting character and Vienna is the main show. Vienna is just a boss character. She's not without her flaws--namely not wanting help unless it's on her own terms. But she is smart and loyal--when she is threatened she closes out her bank account to give her employees enough money to survive on for half a year and sends them away to safety. I also love that she refuses to be shamed about her past work (presumably as a prostitute) that allowed her to earn the money to build the saloon. She has a great speech about how a man can do all sorts of things, including killing, and move past it, while a woman can sin once and forever be a "tramp". At this time, how else could a woman earn enough money to own her own business? I loved that Vienna would not be shamed about her actions or treat it like a dirty secret. And I also loved that Vienna's past never was presented as something that should come between her and Johnny--with the exception of one scene where he "doesn't want to know" how she earned her money and she's like "Well you are going to listen!". Vienna also hangs out almost exclusively in male clothing and it does nothing to diminish her attractiveness. The one time that she does put on a really girly dress, it ends with her catching fire. In a fabulous little touch, Johnny helps her rip her clothes off . . . so that she can put on a shirt and some pants.

5) The villains are really good. Emma makes for an excellent villain. While the whole love triangle element is a bit cliched, it's clear that Emma hates Vienna in part because she resents her success. Emma has played by the rules. She's been a lady. So you can understand why seeing a woman who broke the rules (working as a sex worker) being successful makes her angry. And instead of being mad at the stupid system, Emma turns her anger on Vienna. Both women have short haircuts and wear outfits that either are male clothing or evoke it. How many Westerns are clearly leading up to a shootout between two women? It was a really thrilling dynamic to see two women actually duke it out true Western style--gathering a posse, burning things down, guns, hangings, etc. What's more--there almost at times seemed to be an implication that Emma might be attracted to Vienna herself. Maybe that's too subversive of a reading, but there's a LOT of staring between the two women and I think only a single scene that involves Emma and the Kid. Ernest Borgnine is perfectly hateable as the weaselly Bart. And the third villain, in my opinion, was the town full of mostly weak-willed men (interestingly, I believe that Vienna and Emma are the only women we see in the film) who allow themselves to be bossed around and manipulated by the land baron and Emma.

6) There are several plots going on: the town hating Vienna, the Kid's gang planning a heist, Johnny and Vienna's unrequited love. The movie interweaves them beautifully, and for every action you can see how it might play out in the different subplots.

Overall I was kind of blown away by this film. Westerns, honestly, can be some of the worst offenders of sexist portrayals of female characters and almost never puts women at the center of a narrative--and I can't think of another pre-1990s Western movie where there was a female lead and her main story wasn't about romance (I'm sure someone can probably name a few, but none are coming to mind for me). It was really cool to see a film so masterfully subvert Western convention while at the same time telling a really compelling story that includes many Western tropes (the bank robbery, the lynch mob, the saloon scenes, the shootout, etc). And like I alluded to earlier, the film empowers its female lead without that power coming at the expense of the male characters. In fact, Johnny's acceptance of (and even attraction to) Vienna's character speaks to his own strength--he doesn't feel threatened by her and he gets his own chances to show his bravery and intelligence.

Yeah, pretty great. Maybe wish there was more of a denouement, but what you gonna do?

I too loved "Sheba". Shirley Booth was phenomenal, and it was really her film. Lancaster was good, but it was a difficult part I think. Interesting that he was a Chiropractor-- one of the earliest instances in film of a physician being written as a Chiropractor. And also AA was at the time just starting to be ubiquitous. Having started in 1939, its spread was pretty steady. Very memorable film.

I started to watch this about a year ago and got interrupted and never got back to it...thanks for the reminder that I need to get back to it.

I like how the woman who stays in the shadow throughout most of the film calmly maintains control of the situation, plays the two men like the children that they are, and comes out the winner in the end.

Loved the tight plot, the tensions bubbling underneath the more or less civil facade, the subtle dynamic between the three characters, and on top of it all, the absolutely beautiful, crisp black-and-white cinematography by Jerzy Lipman (who also worked with Andrzej Wajda). A classic, deservedly so.

A Russian horror with typical Russian problems. As usual, it's heavily influenced by recent western productions (this time mainly IT and Dark - I'm also getting some Stranger Things vibes but I'm pretty sure I should be thinking something else, something I just can't remember now). There's quite a lot to like but the lack of original ideas and a rather weak acting weigh heavily against it. I just can't give it a higher rating while there are moments I'd like to.

A teen deals with an unwanted pregnancy, not much of a story and even though I didn't see anything original or memorable about it, it was pretty good. I think it could've used a little more balance with it's portrayal of how women are treated by men. The director is probably a liberal feminist.

I could talk about how this is a pretty lame horror movie with tons of predictable jumpscares, paper-thin characters and the fact that they have no reason whatsoever to be carrying around their devices during a life or death situation, but first of all (1) This was made by amateurs during a pandemic in the space of twelve weeks, which is pretty impressive (Most bad horror movies would be EVEN WORSE if made in this scenario, so maybe this could've been alot better if it wasn't for the pandemic), and second of all (2) I get a thrill out of these types of horror films, no matter how poorly made they are, so my rating reflects how entertained I was.

But for real, I really wanna see one of these computer screen movies where it's just a group of friends arguing on Discord and it slowly tears their friendship apart, with no horror elements at all.
I could try and make it but my friend group is about as organized as a rubix cube in a waiting room lol.

Tender Mercies (1983, Bruce Beresford)
3.5
A very simple, very low-key but also a very heartfelt family drama about a washed-up alcoholic country singer trying to leave his old life behind and start a new one while inevitably having to grapple with the ghosts of the past that keep haunting him. It didn't blow me away or anything but it was very good - short, sweet and to the point. Robert Duvall's beautifully understated performance in this film won him an Academy Award for Best Actor.

I DVRed Tender Mercies from PBS over the weekend, but I haven't had a chance to watch it yet. I've heard great things about this movie, so I'm looking forward to it.

Thriller about 3 environmentalists who bomb a dam that they believe is ruining their immediate environment and the repercussions of their actions. Well plotted and paced and a bit of an open ending. Maybe a bit unrealistic in that the idealists (bar the Peter Sarsgaard character) seem terribly naive about the punishment they will receive, if caught, till after the incident. Surely they would have known the gravity of blowing up a dam!

Yes, I know I'm alone in this but I trully see greatness in this movie.
Emily Blunt's character was the weakest part of the first one imo (naive cop cliche that doesnt understand the war). Now, only the strong characters remains. It's all I wanted and more!

I totally agree that full appreciation of the brilliance of this film requires more than a single viewing.

I think that the idea is that they weren't planning to hurt anyone. The difference between destroying property and killing someone is big and brings a lot more scrutiny to what they did.

I think that the guy dying definitely makes it "real" for the activists. I think that they genuinely believe they will get away with it, and the combined anxiety about getting caught and the guilt of having killed a person is what brings them back to reality.

The Burnt Orange Heresy(2019)

Although the trailer was interesting, I was a little skeptical of the film due to its mediocre ratings. But surprisingly it was a bit of a diamond in the rough, likely foiled in its release plans due to the covid mess.

Featuring a well put together cast of Claes Bang, Elizabeth Debicki, Donald Sutherland, and Mick Jagger (who was actually very good), the story presented an art critic of questionable morals (and a lover/girlfriend of questionable background), who is summoned by a famous art collector with questionable scruples, who wants to acquire a painting by a famous artist whose recent work is of questionable existence.

The story holds one’s interest, but there were several demerits from me. First, much of the dialogue between the artist and anyone else, and likewise some of Jagger’s dialogue was pretentious. No one speaks conversationally in perfectly formed sentences full of formalized or “delicatessen” vocabulary. Second, the story jumped ahead a little quickly, e.g. the critic evidently had a speed pill habit which eventually caused him to commit some fairly horrific crimes. One had to understand that in order to accept the action.

But the acting was first rate, and the chemistry between Debicki and Bang (who is Danish) was palpably authentic, especially on her part. Debicki is a giraffe-like statuesque beauty, who at 6’ 2” probably has trouble getting romantic parts. Happily Bang is 6’ 4”, so it never became a noticeable issue. Jagger astonished me by seeming to be a pro actor, and it was good casting for his part as well. Sutherland mailed in his eccentric artist role, replete with the silly scarves he likes to wear. He did manage to rise above his dialogue, and bring off the part.

The movie transforms into a crime thriller in it’s last third, and finishes up with a nice little twist ala Hitchcock: a surpisingly watchable film.

Doc’s rating: 6.5/10

Rumble Fish 1983
Filled a gap in my FFC list. Very cool movie. Mickey Rourke was effortlessly awesome. And Diane Lane - wowzers. Must watch The Outsiders now. 4

Girlhood 2014
Celine Sciamma is one of the best directors working today. I've now watched her complete filmography, and whilst this isn't as good as Portrait of a Lady, it's directed so well. Sciamma captures the big moments of youth so well. Those huge moments that make memories - she did it so well in Tomboy and Water Lillies and again here - Girlhood depicts the dilemmas and struggles that come with being young and poor. Great film. 4

https://beforethecyborgs.com/wp-content/uploads/never-rarely-sometimes-always.jpg

A teen deals with an unwanted pregnancy, not much of a story and even though I didn't see anything original or memorable about it, it was pretty good. I think it could've used a little more balance with it's portrayal of how women are treated by men. The director is probably a liberal feminist.

Best film of 2020 for me. The long take scene I thought was extraordinary. Sidney Flannigan has never acted before this. Unbelievable.

Agree but there was some giveaways...

I think that they were just naive about the situation.

From their point of view, they are morally right. Frankly I think that a lot of middle class white people in the US just have no conception of actually being involved in the criminal justice system, especially if you don't hurt someone. The reality of years in prison is something that I don't think they'd genuinely considered, even for property damage.

There's definitely an ego-centrism involved, as well, and you really see that in the very end.

Dark and atmospheric noir however Danny was really hard to like and acting was over the top.

Moebius (Kim Ki-duk, 2013)

The jarring editing and digital look took a short time to get used to, but combined with the lack of any dialogue and expressive acting, it became this rhythmic thing that was fully engrossing. One could argue it amounts to nothing more than a technical exercise, but I think that's underestimating it.

I really liked Starred Up, and it's definitely a "keep an eye on this one" performance from Jack O'Connell (yes, I know he'd been in quite a few things, but this was the first I'd seen of him where he really popped as an actor). And then he did '71 right after!

Easy to see how this was likened to Come and See. Its a bleak and cruel tale pretty much from start to finish of a young boy travelling through war torn states. Gorgeously shot in black and white it really reflects the depressing atmosphere of the time. Plenty of disturbing scenes so its not for the faint hearted but its a fantastic watch.

Never seen it before. Excellent movie on several levels. Must have been amazing on the big screen.

Does anyone know? Never mentioned (probably on purpose) in the director’s documentary, but did Tom really fly those planes? I know he’s a daredevil & has flown planes in movies before, but did he fly the fighter plane himself?

Good comparison. This was only my second from Reichardt after Night Moves. Thought I had seen Wendy and Lucy but mustn't have. Yes their friendship was great to watch, just listening to their mundane conversations were a joy.

Planning to see all your recent movies.

You have to see Wendy & Lucy, Meek’s Cutoff and especially Certain Women, which might be my favorite. Loved almost everything this director has done. Night Moves might be my least favorite.

Also, I think you would like this Scottish movie very much. Very powerful. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0471030/

First viewing. Directed by Chris Columbus, the same guy who made Home Alone, and starring that girl from The Karate Kid, overall, a light funny film that felt like a John Hughes movie -I wouldn't be surprised if John was the ghostwriter here. it was even shot in Chicago, Hughes' hometown and the setting of pretty much all of his movies. The movie is probably the only one where the beautiful Elizabeth Shue starred in the leading role. The other films she was in during the 80's were in secondary roles such as The Karate Kid, Cocktail, and the Back to the Future sequels. I find that highly criminal.

The Peanut Butter Falcon, 2019

A young man with Down Syndrome, Zak, escapes from the retirement home where he's being kept, making a run for a wrestling school run by a larger-than-life personality called the Salt Water Redneck. At the same time an unsettled fisherman named Tyler rouses the ire of several men when he pulls from their crab traps. After a mild act of vandalism on Tyler's part goes wrong, he ends up on the run with Zak. The two of them are pursued by Eleanor, the woman in charge of Zak who has been tasked with returning him to the nursing home.

This movie, above all, is full of heart and compassion for its various characters. Featuring a character with a disability is a tricky thing. There's the trap of over-sentimentalizing the character (making them a wise saint) and the opposing trap of feeling like you are mocking the character. The movie was supposedly written specifically with the actor who plays Zak in mind, and the script is tailored to his interests. This allows for a very natural flow to the film, and an authenticity of the character.

Zack Gottsagen and Shia LaBeouf have really excellent chemistry. I know that LaBeouf has had his various struggles over the years, but I've been pretty impressed by everything I've seen him in (including his work in the Elastic Heart music video). He has an incredibly natural rapport with Gottsagen that reduces the gap between "experienced actor" and "first timer". LeBeouf does some heavy lifting with an almost entirely internal subplot about the death of his character's older brother and the guilt that Tyler carries. Bonding with Zak brings out a lot of emotions in Tyler, both positive and painful. It's a really powerful performance.

The supporting cast is pretty excellent. Thomas Hayden Church as Salt Water Redneck; Jon Berenthal as Tyler's older brother; Dakota Johnson as Eleanor; Bruce Dern as Zak's nursing home roommate; and John Hawkes as one of the men pursuing Tyler.

My only real complaint was what I felt was a lack of development in Eleanor's character. She's the only main female character (heck, or secondary character), and she's written as incredibly reactive. The film has a great conversation between Eleanor and Tyler about the way that she treats Zak. Despite her good intentions, she infantilizes him, and Tyler rightfully points out that this behavior hurts Zak just as much as some of the slurs and cruelty he encounters. But after this speech about giving Zak more autonomy, her character doesn't change much. And she doesn't . . . do much. She was already pretty ineffectual, and her being convinced one way or the other doesn't change her impact on the plot. It feels like she's there to be the love interest, and it's to Dakota Johnson's credit that the character feels dimensional. It doesn't quite seem right that there's never a real conversation between Eleanor and Zak.

This movie put a huge smile on my face and on the faces of the people I watched it with. We all work with young people or young adults with severe disabilities, and this was an affectionate and natural portrayal of the wonderful relationships that you can form if you aren't biased by assumptions about what someone can do or feel. A real pick-me-up with an endearing optimism at its core.

IN THE TALL GRASS
(2019)

An original concept that invokes dread about getting stuck in an uncomfortable situation (losing your path and getting lost in a field of tall grass), but the concept loses it's path halfway through (pun intended) and ends in an uncomfortable but familiar way. It's not a great movie with stellar performances (far from it), but it's worth a watch.

I was also pretty impressed with Gerald's Game, and I agree that Gugino's performance is absolutely fantastic. I'm a big fan of Mike Flanagan's direction (things like Oculus, Hush, and Before I Wake. I feel as though in the horror that he makes he is always on an empathetic frequency with his protagonists. He manages to portray situations with vulnerable people without it feeling exploitative.

I think that what's so masterful about Gerald's Game it is the way that it explores such a range of fears and frightening situations.

Everything from being with a person in a sexual situation where they can overpower you and don't care about your consent, to a wild animal, to potential starvation/dehydration, to a monstrous creature/person. It sounds totally outlandish, and yet the film makes it all work and interweaves the elements so well. And when you layer in the question of what's real and what isn't, it only gets more interesting and complex.

Also, aside from allowing herself to be handcuffed (which, to be fair, it was her husband, she was trying to be a good partner, and he sprung his rape fantasy on her with no warning so her character was kind of in shock, etc), I didn't feel like she did anything "wrong". The movie addressed pretty much everything I could think of--the phone, trying to break the bed, etc.

My only mixed feelings were about the epilogue-style ending. On one hand it gave interesting information and brought the story to a certain degree of closure. But on the other hand I found it a bit jarring after spending 99.9% of the movie in that bedroom.

Beat the Devil, 1953

An interesting film from John Huston, starring Humphrey Bogart, and slightly defying my attempts to describe it in a nutshell.

Bogart stars as a man named Billy who is a member of an international gang of criminals planning to pull off a huge scam involving land purchases in Africa. Their ship faces an unexpected delay, and the gang is stranded for several days in Italy. Also stranded are a married couple, Gwen and Harry Chelm. Gwen quickly becomes infatuated with Billy, and Billy's relationship with the Chelms adds complications to the gang's plot.

This film was a total jumble of comedy, romance, thriller, and action. Bogart grounds the film with his typical cool disinterest, while Jennifer Jones as Gwen brings a sort of cheery, manic unpredictability to the story. The supporting cast (including Peter Lorre as one of the gang members) add their own dose of comedy and/or menace. The film is very quirky, and switches between comedy and thriller elements from scene to scene.

I had a good time with the movie, with my only complaint being that at time it felt a bit disjoint. There were moments where Gwen's character teetered on the line between "quirky" and "annoying", something that I mostly chalk up to the writing. There's a very dated portrayal of Arab characters that was a bit painful to watch. It also struggles a bit with the ending, and it's a bit of a wobbly landing.

I'm a bit surprised that this isn't a movie that was on my radar. It's one from Ebert's great movie list, and I was able to watch it on Prime.

I think this is one of Spike Lee's finest moments. A strong cast and a thrilling tale that keeps you on your toes till the very end. Mekhi Phifer is wonderful as "Strike", the wrong-doing sibling (the other being the great Isaiah Washington). The police side (Harvey Keitel and John Turturro is interesting and the street-side also. A very interesting soundtrack (more soulful than rap) enhances this no end. The Delroy Lindo character is both admirable and **** scary!!! Good piece of movie-making. Many shades of black and white and grey.

Perfect watching for a Sunday afternoon. Nice light touch in the directing and the story was engaging. Dean Martin could certainly act and all the cast did well. Satisfying, I think is the word.

Long Day's Journey into Night (2018) - 3.5
an interesting journey with a quiet astounding visual feast, the director Bi Gan gave some kind of modern rendition of Tarkovskian touch while still left some originality from his delicate vision; in part, I do love the surreality in the second half but regard the main story everything just on a fine level if not the stylization. maybe sometimes, the 3D?

Ex Machina (2014) - 3
somehow I decided to look this one attentively back, after around five years now the topic does grab the two cents of me.
the setup quite solid, the build-up, but can't help that as once the feel of "i know where it's going" arose along the line, it kinda turns meh.
also, I think there something on me that not sitting well with Vikander's presence as an actress.

A great comedy that is a good introduction to people whom haven’t seen the show before, not everyone’s cup of tea but gives you a slice of what Canada is like.

Long Weekend (1978)

https://d2ycltig8jwwee.cloudfront.net/reviews/1559/detail.ab7e4bed.jpg

An Australian movie whose headline is something to the effect of, mess with nature and nature will fight back. A couple go camping and are disrespectful towards nature while they struggle to get along. The animals are watching. Decent atmosphere and sense of dread, but not good enough to make up for the lack of excitement.

I enjoyed it as a slow-burn. I know what you mean by "lack of excitement", but I loved some of the details like the dead group in the water or the dead(??) creature that kept appearing.

It wasn't bad but I kept thinking how awesome Wake in Fright is.

School starts tomorrow, thus this weekend has been filled with anxiety, and thus I have been watching (1) movies that I find upsetting and (2) the worst looking movies that have somehow ended up on my watchlist. Some quickies:

The Frozen Ground, 2013 (Rewatch)

This movie is so infuriating. Based on a true story, the film starts where you would normally imagine a movie ending: a young woman, bloodied and handcuffed, escapes from a man who intended to kill her. She reports that she's been raped and tortured, gives a description of the man (including details about his home, his car, and the fact that he owns a plane). And yet the police decide that because she's a sex worker she's making up a story, that the man she accused is a "good family man" (despite having several legal run-ins in his past, including two rapes!), and close the case. Vanessa Hudgens plays the victim, Cindy, who is justifiably cynical about the police helping her. Nicholas Cage plays a detective who is trying to solve the disappearance/murder of many women in the same region. John Cusack plays Robert Hansen, the killer. It's all very frustrating and the real life case is so depressing. I watched this movie for the first time around the same time I read the book The Lost Girls (which I see has been adapted into a film on Netflix). Both stories really highlight some of the biases and flaws in the criminal justice system. To the film's credit, it devotes most of its runtime to the police investigation and Cindy's ordeal. The real case had some pretty lascivious elements (the rapes/torture, the fact that he apparently hunted some of his victims like animals before shooting and burying them), and I appreciated that the movie doesn't wallow in those--it treats the victims as people and with respect.

I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore, 2017 (Rewatch)

Melanie Lynskey plays a woman who is constantly dismayed by the crappy way that people behave in the world. When her house is broken into, she is pushed over the edge and decides to pursue the perpetrators on her own. Elijah Wood plays her eccentric neighbor who agrees to be her vigilante wingman. But as the two chase their leads, they end up in over their heads.

This movie, even on a second watch, was very intense for me. Macon Blair (who made the excellent Blue Ruin) has a way of inserting startling and upsetting violence in his films. In this film it's mixed with comedy, but that almost makes it more unsettling? Anyway, it's funny and intense. The acting is really great. This movie makes me happy and unhappy.

The Man in the Trunk, 2019

(I did watch this while also working on lesson plans. Sorry.)

Better than I expected, though not without flaws. One night a man named Andrew opens his door to find a friend he hasn't seen in 5 years asking for help. He agrees to help him, and, well, you know that old saying "A friend will help you move, a good friend will help you move a body"? But soon things get complicated and Andrew must figure out what his friend has gotten him into.

This is one of those low budget films that benefits from mostly decent writing, pretty good acting (especially the lead actor), and a good pace. Heck, it gets half a star for having a scene where two men are fighting and the wife of one of them actually helps instead of cowering in the corner.

The only real complaint (because if a film's budget is like $10,000 I'm not saying a word about the acting or the sets) is that, like many low-budget thrillers, the film has a "twist" that it holds onto until the very end, but that should have just come out earlier in the movie. I wish that directors/writers would just have the confidence to tell a story without feeling like that have to have that one big last reveal.

The Fall

(I also watched this while working. Sorry!)

Just a case of about three too many ideas. A man named Tony is arrested for the stabbing murder of a priest. His brother, a rising politician/judge, agrees to act as his defense attorney. Everything is complicated by the relationships that the brothers have with their wives, a tragic incident from their past, and their fraught relationship with the church.

I consider myself a pretty savvy viewer, but there was just so much plot in this one--and so many times that characters alluded to things without actually just saying them--that it was hard to keep track. To be clear: there are some pretty decent ideas in here. But it feels like the writer just had to keep adding things in. The judge overseeing the case is blind! A homophobic, sadistic prison guard! A wacky, over-the-top cellmate! There were also a handful of scenes played for comedy that I just found confusing. The whole film is just kind of messy.

GET ON UP
(2014)

First viewing. In light of the recent passing of star Chadwick Boseman, I felt compelled to watch his portrayal of the Godfather of Soul after having pushed the film to the side for 6 years. The movie plays like your ordinary biopic. We get to see James Brown during his turbulent childhood and youth, and how he rose from under the rags to become the most influential figure in music history, and then we get to see his fall from grace before "getting on up" again. I believe that the well written script, the amazing soundtrack, and Boseman's captivating and spot-on performance all the way down to Brown's groovy footwork on stage elevates this movie into an excellently made biopic.

Next up on my list are Boseman's performances as Jackie Robinson in 42 and Thurgood Marshall in Marshall.

Postmark for Danger(1955) - not a bad little brit-noir that's kind of a throwback to The Third Man.

La isla mínima (Marshland) (2014) - 6.8/10. Another one of those nearly there thrillers. The movie revolves one murder not a bunch of them, so a lot of the movie deals with the investigation not a series of murders. It was a great build up till the end. Definitely recommended.

1st Re-Watch...last night's broadcast on ABC was my first re-watch...my re-watch didn't really change anything I said in my original review or my original rating. It is technically breathtaking, but the story is a little convoluted and takes a little too long to get where it's going for my tastes. The tragic passing of Chadwick Boseman doesn't change my opinion about the film.

American Dharma - 8/10
Worth the $3.99.... Besides the obvious, it also centers around Bannon's favorite movies, "Sergeant York" and others.

This isn't really a full review. Someone earlier in this thread posted about watching In the Tall Grass and I decided to check it out.

The concept is okay, but I was kind of frustrated by the film. Some of the writing/acting was a bit over the top.

Also, I feel like some of its most powerful imagery was just straight up lifted from Triangle, a much superior trapped in a time loop/time travel film

A few effective images and a noteworthy gross-out sequence didn't manage to lift it out of mediocrity. Not a bad movie, just overlong and lacking in punch.

The Odd Angry Shot 1979
D: Tom Jeffrey

Obscure Australian made film about a group of soldiers serving in Vietnam. An unusual and entertaining film, leaving politics and action mostly aside and focussing on the characters and their day to day living, which consists mostly of drinking beer and finding new and amusing ways to pass the time. I generally have quite a low opinion of the Australian film industry (being one myself), but this is really quite a good and enjoyable movie. Good performance from Graham Kennedy.

I hate what has happened to the found footage genre, Blair Witch has never been equalled, it has just turned into the ultimate in lazy film making and this is la z z z z y and I dont care if it was made in lockdown or made on. zoom, its still ****ing lazy..

Movie - a group of girl friends and one girly guy and a **** of a medium hold a seance on zoom and something is invited... because we all know movies so well, no explanation is needed, its an "entity" okay

Bad things happen, I didnt jump once then I looked at the time and there is only 15 minutes long, thank god this "movie" if you can call something that is 50 minutes long a movie, wow they couldn't even hit the hour mark

And what is with that medium... if anybody here can they please knock twice.. "knock knock" oh sorry that's my delivery guys hahaha it was meant to come yesterday and then a coat flies of her table and her internet is cut off.. about 20 minutes later they phone medium who's like "oh Im glad you phoned me" .. because she wasn't inclined to phone them in all that time.. its strange because she comes across as this caring empathetic person but is just a total c u n t

no extra marks because it was made in lockdown, sorry

[rating1[/rating]

1 rating because the actors could at least act a little bit which is quite rare in what has become found footage

Captive (2015)
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/35/Captive_%282015_film%29_poster.jpg
True story of escaped prisoner (David Oyelowo) who takes a former meth-addict single mum (Kate Mara) hostage after bolting from the courthouse and murdering 3 people in the process.

Good and suspenseful enough with believable acting all round. Bit of the TV movie about it though.

Does anyone know? Never mentioned (probably on purpose) in the director’s documentary, but did Tom really fly those planes? I know he’s a daredevil & has flown planes in movies before, but did he fly the fighter plane himself?

Planning to see all your recent movies.

You have to see Wendy & Lucy, Meek’s Cutoff and especially Certain Women, which might be my favorite. Loved almost everything this director has done. Night Moves might be my least favorite.

Also, I think you would like this Scottish movie very much. Very powerful. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0471030/

All been added to my never ending watchlist Stirchley ;)

Ive actually seen Red Road and really liked it, thanks for the rec. Have you watched other films from Arnold? You've probably seen American Honey but you should catch Fish Tank if you haven't already.

With the caveat that I haven't read the book, I think that the 30s version of All Quiet on the Western Front is hands-down an excellent film and, next to Come and See, one of the best (if not *the* best) anti-war films.

Tenet. (2020)

It almost seems unfair trying to review this film after just one viewing. It demands and will no doubt reward repeat viewings. An enjoyable yet challenging, often confusing film to watch, made with Christopher Nolan's usual high quality. It's reassuring and a little surprising that movie studies are still willing to invest $200 million in a film as original, intelligent and ambitious as this. I think it will definitely be a love it or hate film for the general audience. I know several people walked out when I saw it at the cinema.

The strength of this film is definitely the high concept ideas and the mind-bending plot. Trying to wrap my head around what the hell was going on made for a refreshingly challenging experience that you rarely get from blockbusters. It's weakness was the characters, most of which were dull, one dimensional and underdeveloped. It seemed their main purpose was just to be cogs moving Nolan's complex plot machine along. Pattinson added some charm and charisma but the rest of them left me completely indifferent to their fate. The action scenes were also underwhelming for the most part.

A flawed and frustrating Nolan film still makes for a memorable and rewarding watch.

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE
(1996)

Re-watch. Directed with grace and elegance by Brian De Palma, and brilliantly written by David Koepp, the movie version of the famous TV show shines through; add to that the talented all-star cast and Tom Cruise's first notable venture into action, a turn that launched a successful career for Cruise as a modern movie action star. The one issue I had with the film was the climactic but bizarre finale on the train, that's where the film did not feel like a De Palma movie anymore, and was just way too over the top, but, overall, the movie was a captivating experience.

It's certainly a series with some ups and downs!

I really liked the first film

Really disliked the second film, mostly because I feel like Woo's style didn't gel as well with the world/characters. I saw it in the theater and was super disappointed.

The third film was pretty strong, and gets a lift from a pretty fantastic supporting cast. I remember seeing the trailer for the third film in the theater and being awed by the bridge sequence.

The fourth, fifth, and sixth films sort of blend together for me. The fourth movie has that infamous sequence where he climbs the tall building with the special gloves--I remember seeing that in the theater and feeling a little woozy!

It'll be interesting to hear what you think of the series!

Dead by Dawn, 2019

This movie has a 3.2 rating on the IMDb. I knew what I was getting into.

LuLu is a young woman with a real creep of a boyfriend. Leaving the house to go to her uncle's party, she ends up in an Uber-type car with a driver who is . . . also a creep. The film then jumps to a man, Dylan, who is contemplating suicide in a secluded cabin. A bloodied LuLu stumbles into his home and he agrees to help protect her from the trio of sadists (including the creepy cabbie) who are after her.

On the bright side, the actor who plays Dylan is pretty good, and all of the actors are at least clearly trying to bring energy to the film. Ironically, the most naturalistic actors (the women who play Dylan's wife and daughter--only seen in flashbacks) get the least amount of screen time. I will also give the film credit for keeping LuLu's rape/torture off-screen. She arrives at Dylan's cabin needing help (and eventually ready for revenge). Many low-budget films overindulge in scenes of violence and I appreciated that this film went the other direction.

On the down side, the film has an overall kind of stilted feel to it. The relationships between the three killers is really weird. One of them is the creepy cabbie. The other is his . . . lover? And the third is . . . LuLu's uncle?(!?!?!?!?). I'll admit that I wasn't 100% paying attention, but I didn't understand how the three of them connected, and what their original plan was.

There's some edgy/crude humor that I felt failed to land and took away from the more serious plotline of the film. It was hard at times to tell whether I was meant to be taking the story seriously or treating it like a comedy. It's not funny enough to be a dark comedy, and it has too much "comedy" to play as a straight thriller.

Still, it has some lizard-brain pleasures, like watching the bad guys take an arrow to the shoulder or a board full of nails to the face. Like I said, I knew what I was getting into.

I had meant to pm you beforehand but totally forgot! What scene are you thinking? Really enjoyed it, as much as a film like that can be enjoyed! Certainly didn't feel almost 3hours long anyway although may have been due to there being chapters, which I also loved.

The eyes scene was a bit ridiculous. Aside from that it's brilliant.

Stunning film. Scratchy eerie score. So atmospheric. The sexual tension is palpable. The images are jaw dropping. Extreme close ups, imaginative wide angles. The changing state of Japanese society as it arrives into the modern world is melded with personal existentialism and relationship trauma.

Simply one of the greatest films I have ever seen.

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 2
(2000)

First viewing. John Woo is a renowned action movie director, but his taking over of the helm for the sequel to Mission: Impossible following Brian De Palma was not the correct choice in my opinion. There's just so many slow motion jump kicks, round kicks, and flying in the air while shooting a gun that you can take before you say enough is enough. The plot seemed pretty straight-forward and bland with no twists, unlike its predecessor.

Overall, a mindless action film with little substance, unless the fictional Chimera virus is considered a "substance". Enjoyable? Very minimal. I just hope the rest of the series is much more exciting than this entry.

I don't think the US studios have ever let him make his own film have they? At least, when it comes to the action stuff? I remember interviews when he first went over where he's incredulous that they're arguing over how many gunshots/people being shot and how, etc they could show per scene/minute/whatever.

Yes, in one of my Van Damme blu-rays (I think it's in the Universal Soldier 2 extras) he says that most Chinese directors couldn't have full control of the project, he asked John Woo to direct Hard Target, and they were unable to make the film they wanted - so did Ringo Lam (Maximum Risk, Replicant and In Hell) and Hark Tsui (Double Team, Knock Off) . There is another interview on one of my John Woo DVDs, in which Woo himself says that he was so frustrated with the studios controlling his projects, that after Paycheck (2003) he decided to live Hollywood forever. I believe that Face/Off was as close as he got to controlling one film in Hollywood.

I felt that it was just more of the film's universe and Woo's style not being as natural of a mix.

When I think Mission Impossible, yes, there are explosions and shootouts. But the most memorable sequences tend to be things that are all about stealth or delicacy or deception.

Woo's strength, to me, is taking explosive and violent action and elevating it to something that could be over the top but instead feels very controlled and deliberate.

The leap from the fiddly "lowered into a room on a cable to hack a computer" vibe of the first film to MOTORCYCLE DUELS!!!!! in the second didn't work for me. The low point for me was when he lands on top of the female lead in the bathtub and (wait for it) it looks like they are having sex, LOL. The whole tone of the film was something I found actively off-putting. It ranks as one of my worst theater experiences.

I'm glad, in the spirit of the universe, that someone out there likes it. But it really wasn't my cup of tea.

Yeah I think Kenneth Branagh was totally miscast in that role. Robert Pattinson was the only one I looked forward to seeing, it was like a breath of fresh air whenever he came on screen.

Operator, 2015

Another "long week, dumb fun" watch.

Pam (Mischa Barton) is estranged from her husband Jeremy (Luke Goss). She works as a 911 operator while he is a police officer. One day a mysterious man (Ving Rhames) calls Pam at work and begins directing her to crimes that have not happened yet, using her kidnapped daughter as leverage.

I will say that the movie gets a 4/5 for "dumb" and a "3/5" for "fun".

The premise of a 911 or other emergency operator playing cat and mouse with a killer is always a decent premise. The film tries to get most of its emotional heft from the idea that Pam repeatedly has to dispatch Jeremy to dangerous situations while trying to figure out who is pulling the strings. Barton and Goss are both fine in their roles. Rhames, as the mysterious caller, does his best to liven up a performance that is 95% sitting at a desk on a phone.

Overall, though, the film is just a *little* too stupid at times. We are told that Jeremy is a "good and thoughtful man." Okay, but in the very first sequence his partner ogles a woman and says she has a butt "like a 10 year old" and then immediately pivots to talking about Jeremy's own 10 year old daughter. And Jeremy's response is like "Ha! Oh, dude!". It sets such a weird tone for his character.

And on Pam's side of things, she will send vague text messages to Jeremy, but like, if you are already sending a message why not be more specific?

The best "bad" part of the film is that Pam and the mystery man have the same conversation about four different times:

[Something bad happens]
PAM: I'm not going to help you anymore!
BAD GUY: Yes you are!
PAM: Why would I keep helping you?!
BAD GUY: Because . . . I have your daughter!
PAM: Oh, yeah. Okay, what do I do next?

Like, she seems to forget about every 20 minutes that they have her daughter!

Anyway, this was a fine way to spend some brainless minutes. I wouldn't exactly recommend it, but it's the kind of movie you put on while you vacuum or do other little chores around the house.

American Dreamer, 2018

(Am I slumming it a little after all the great stuff I've been watching for the 2020 Film Challenge? Maybe).

I was expecting something a little lighter from this movie, perhaps lulled into a bit of complacency by the presence of Jim Gaffigan.

Cam (Gaffigan) is a driver for an Uber-like company. His personal and financial life is a mess--divorced from his wife, dealing (or not dealing) with some mental health issues, and running perilously low on cash. One day a drug dealer named Mazz offers Cam some extra cash if he'll be on call for him. Before long he hatches a plan to kidnap Mazz's girlfriend for a ransom, but when that plan goes sideways he takes Mazz's infant son instead. Things only get worse and worse, and before long Cam is shuttling Mazz around in search of "the kidnapper".

I will credit the film with a consistent tone of foreboding, and the way that Cam's dual sense of entitlement and despair leads him to allow worse and worse things to happen. Another element of the film that I appreciated was that it never tried to make Cam a victim. When the film first introduced Mazz, it felt like the movie was going to use criminal characters to make Cam look better. Instead, you see that Cam is willing to cross lines that even hardened drug dealers wouldn't.

There's something missing in this film that keeps it from being completely satisfying. Maybe it's that Cam is such a creep from the beginning. We don't really see him go on much of a character arc. There are a few shocking moments, but since he already has a troubled past, I didn't necessarily feel surprised.

The most pleasant surprise of the film are the characters of Mazz and his girlfriend Marina. Despite the characters maybe being a bit thinly written, the actors give very strong performances, and you see the way that their anger and suspicion at each other keeps them from seeing what's right in front of them. The best sequences of the film simply involve Cam as a shocked bystander, slightly in awe of the carnage his single act has led to.

I'd actually recommend this one, though it's a bit of a tepid recommendation.

Hush Money, 2017

(Yes, I'm still in this particular corner--everyone gets kidnapped!!--of Amazon Prime low-budget offerings).

A man named Doug owes money to the wrong people. On the last day of his loan, a desperate Doug kidnaps Kennedy, the teenage daughter of a famous baseball player. You may be shocked to hear that things don't quite go as planned!!

Like many low-budget films, the main issue with Hush Money is an inconsistent tone. The first third of the film plays like a lighter thriller with some effective comic elements. There's a pretty good sequence where Doug tries to procure an asthma inhaler from an apathetic pharmacist; and another funny sequence where a delivery man accidentally catches sight of Kennedy and Doug has to then take him hostage as well.

I wish that the film had stayed in that lighter mode. There's a pretty decent rapport between the two leads, but when things get intense in the final act, the actor playing Doug goes to a more extreme place with the character and his younger co-star can't quite match his level (not skill level, just energy/emotional level). The middle third is sort of hard to describe, and the film goes on a very strange and improbably tangent.

This is also a case of a film that doesn't quite know how to stick the landing. Things get very convoluted in the last ~20 minutes, and some important stuff happens off-screen.

I did enjoy the movie for the most part. The first third in particular was pretty good. While sometimes hindered by clumsy dialogue, the two leads have pretty good chemistry. There's an overarching theme of parents wanting to protect their children, and I wish it had been explored a bit more. And for a low-budget film I thought that overall it looked pretty good.

Went into this apprehensively, like both Mel Gibson and Emile Hirsch but has had awful reviews.
A storm in Puerto Rico taxes the local police with moving the vulnerable to higher ground. Disgruntled officer (see where I'm going) gets there with his new partner to find 2 people, an aged ex-cop and a similarly aged unknown that they need to get out.

It's not great but it's not awful.

Fist time watching this Peter Greenaway drama. Highly stylised (like all his work) the story is about 3 female members of the same family (Mother, Daughter, Niece) taking their frustrations out of their spouses and using a (rather convenient!) Coroner to sign off the deaths as anything but murder. This because he has desires for all 3 ladies. Has good funny and dramatic parts and us never less than interesting. Also a ludicrous but intriguing ending that just.....*fits*.
Think this is my favourite Greenaway by some distance.

Feast your eyes on this, er, feast of garbage cinema! (This week's garbage selection all came from the keyword "kidnap" on IMDb, hence the common theme. For great garbage choices I also recommend "spy", "conspiracy", and "undercover".)

https://m.media-amazon.com/images/M/MV5BY2EwOGRhZDAtMWNlZC00MTM0LWE4ZTktMjY0NTcwMjEyYWM2XkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyMTk1NzUwMA@@._V1_SY1000_CR0,0,15 03,1000_AL_.jpg

Burden of Evil, 2012

Okay, this TV movie isn't necessarily garbage. It's more like . . . well, the last time I went to the grocery store I wanted a gentle meal and got some chicken and rice soup. I did not look closely enough and got chicken and rice soup without salt. It tastes like liquid nothing and a hint of carrot.

This movie is that soup.

A detective named Kate is called to action when the man who killed her husband kidnaps a senator's daughter. Unsurprisingly, it's personal! The two play a tepid game of cat and mouse. The kidnapper and his victim look like they are about 14 years old. It's fine. A not so surprising twist here. Some gentle menacing of the victim there. A lot of neutral colored clothing.

Wages of Sin, 2011

I mean, you see that picture.

I will say that Katharine Everett (playing the abductee) is really good. In fact, all three of the actors are pretty good. But the overall premise (a woman is abducted by a obviously closeted gay man and his moron religious girlfriend) never takes off. Much like Hush Money, the comedy in the first third is more effective than the "serious stuff" toward the end.

Recommended if you want to see a man try to eat ketchup covered french fries while wearing a paper grocery bag over his face.

Bite, 2015

A group of slumming actors, I mean, mercenaries are hired to kidnap a wealthy man's daughter. But upon entering the sprawling mansion, the entire house goes into a lockdown and the group realizes they've been led into a trap.

This is the real garbage of the trio. Horrible dialogue, line readings that had me cringing. The film pulls out all the lowest common denominator tricks (tons of uninventive female nudity, while the male actors are all kept modestly clothed). The soundtrack plays heavily over the film, at times obscuring the dialogue. I watch with subtitles, and I frequently saw "dialogue fades under music", "unintelligible conversation", or "unintelligible screaming".

A hot mess. It gets a point for the absurdity of a scene where the group are attacked by a baby vampire and the film inelegantly cuts between shots of the actors wildly swinging around a fake baby and then gently handling a real baby.

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE III
(2006)

First viewing. More action-packed than the first 2 entries, and unlike the action in the first 2, particularly the second entry where the action scenes were boring and lame, the action in this entry is cool and exciting. Action scenes aside, the best part of the movie is none other than Philip Seymour Hoffman as the main villain. Straight up, he makes a GREAT bad guy. The opening scene where Tom Cruise's character is held captive by Hoffman as Hoffman threatens to shoot Cruise's wife who is also held captive at the countdown of 10 if he does not reveal the location of the 'rabbit's foot' alone is extremely intense and earns this movie a full 3 stars, the rest of the movie earns the additional half star.

This is very close to how I feel about it. I also think that the sequence with Keri Russell is really strong.

Hoffman is the most memorable villain in the who series, and it's not even close.

Harry Brown, been meaning to watch this for ages and for whatever reason it always seemed to pass me by, lol. An enjoyable film and Michael Caine is very good in it. 3

The Aviator, Christopher Reeve plays a pilot who crashes with a passenger (Roseanna Arquette) and they end up lost in the wilderness. I love these sort of films and Reeves is a brilliant actor that gets forgotten because of his Superman films (in my opinion anyway.) 4.5

We Own the Night (2007)

Good acting all around from Wahlberg, J. Phoenix, Eva Mendes, and Robt. Duvall. The writing kind of let the film down, which sometimes is the case when there's a combination director/writer, in this case James Gray.

The story didn't seem realistic. Phoenix had to do a transformation of character type, which he really didn't pull off IMO. He's a great actor, but yet he's less effective when he plays a more straight type character role, whereas he so easily plays a stoner, a weirdo or a nut.

It's a watchable movie for sure, but I'd only give it 5/10.

Good, watchable and, affecting tale of growing up and relationships (sexual and familial) in the 1960s. I think for a broad film it's crystallised well down to the relationships between the two friends.

If you can get over the fact the characters are mostly all painted as rich pretentious dilettantes....it's a really good film. It holds it's strength over its time and is very enjoyable.

Dr. Sleep
6.5/10.

Dr. Sleep pales in comparison to The Shining (1980) so much that this film feels less like a sequel and more like a spin-off. The Shining is horrifying and mysterious; this film is like Twilight (2008) but without the romance. Unlike its predecessor, Dr. Sleep asks no questions and only provides bland answers.
A disappointing follow-up to one of the greatest horror films of all-time.
It's interesting to note too that the movie is again very different from the book.

Pretty good, especially for its somewhat traditional crime/action approach to the genre and the overall commercial package.

It's entertaining without leaving a feeling of being treated like the mindless consumer the makers of these types of movies usually don't bother much with hiding that they see you as. Must say I appreciate the effort, as it actually lets me, you know, enjoy the movie.

I dare anyone disagreeing with this review to point me to better examples of comparably "available" thrillers that manage to suck you in and, for the most part, give your anti Hollywood snob bone a break :D

Gloriously over the top 80s action movie, dripping with testosterone and 80s excess. Arnold is in full one-man-army mode, built like a tank, taking out bad guys with a kill count higher than a small war. Some great one liners, tight pacing and probably the least intimidating villain ever in Bennett who's basically an overweight middle-aged man going toe-to-toe with peak Schwarzenegger. It's ridiculous of course and completely unrealistic but that's all part of the charm.

They don't make 'em like this anymore. An action movie classic.

Early thriller outing for Mark Wahlberg and Reese Witherspoon playing teens from different sides of the track who hook up. With deadly consequences!

The story is ropey and some of the acting is too (Davids voice changing when with his friends or with his GF is bl00dy hilarious!) , it's predictable and laughable at points but still has a charm for all that.

Joker, 2019

I don't have a lot to say about this one right now, as I'm still working through my thoughts about it. Phoenix certainly gives a memorable performance and the film is very well written and directed. The 80s New York (sorry, "Gotham") that it evokes is a cold and harsh environment.

The main thing that I liked about the story is also the flip side of what I disliked, and that's the way that the film regards the main character, Arthur, a man suffering from mental illness and dealt cruelty after cruelty by both acquaintances and strangers.

So on the positive side, I appreciated the way that the movie portrayed the lack of resources and compassion for people with mental illness. There are people who have really severe mental illness who clearly need constant care. There are people with mental illness who can cope on their own. But a lot of people live in a horrible middle ground--too ill to cope on their own, but not sick "enough" to merit commitment. I have a friend whose mother struggles with schizophrenia, and they go through these horrible cycles involving 72 hour mental hospital stays, after which she is discharged, only to be found wandering the streets shoeless a month later. There is a systemic failure in our world (and certainly in the US) to support people with mental illness, and this is especially true in the 80s setting of the film. Arthur is told that he should seek help, but the government programs have been cut. I did appreciate that the movie showed that many people in the mental health system do mean well (like Arthur's counselor), but their power and resources are limited.

On the negative side, however, I felt that the film made an error in portraying Arthur as acting under a moral code. All of Arthur's violence in the movie is justified, and I actually found that to be kind of a problem. To begin with, people who are mentally ill do not precisely target only bad people. Their violence spills over into people they actually love and care about. Arthur becoming violent should be a tragedy, but the film muddies the waters by making all of his violent acts understandable (and, in certain cases, even something the audience would root for). Conveniently, all of the people he holds hostility toward but are not necessarily "guilty" are harmed by others. The film also conveniently withholds some of the justifiable concern someone might have about his behavior. I appreciated the scene with the neighbor, but generally when people in the film are worried about Arthur, the scene is framed so that they seem rude or uncaring. There are an unfortunate number of cases of people (and specifically "loner" men) who lash out violently because of a sense of rejection or having been wronged by the world--and despite Phoenix claiming that you aren't supposed to identify with Arthur, many parts of the film framed things so that the violence was his only choice or something that was justified.

I thought that the portrayal of Arthur's mother was actually a much better representation of mental illness. (MODERATE SPOILERS) She suffers from mental health issues. She may or may not have been taken advantage of by her wealthy employer (the part where she says that she signed an NDA rang true to me in a sea of other stuff that felt more ambiguous). She ends up with string of boyfriends who abuse her and abuse her son (notice that they say that she "let" the boyfriend beat her up and her son). She neglects her child, either intentionally or because of fear of her boyfriend. She tells herself a version of events that is probably some mix of truth and delusion. She is anxious, afraid, and she clings to the one person who shows her loyalty and love.

Good, but I need to mull over its themes a bit more.

Atlantic City, 1980

A woman named Sally (Susan Sarandon) lives in Atlantic City, hoping to become a blackjack dealer. Her loser husband, Dave, and his pregnant girlfriend arrive in town so that Dave can make a drug deal with cocaine he's stolen from some very bad people. An older man named Lou (Burt Lancaster) lives in Sally's building, mooching off of an elderly widow and pining after his glory days in Las Vegas. When Dave ropes Lou into his drug deal, Lou sees the opportunity to be a player once again and to pursue his interest in Sally.

Overall this was really good. It is strong in its treatment of the main characters and the development of the secondary characters (especially the widow, who at first seems like she might only exist to be the butt of jokes). Sally's plot arc is particularly compelling, as she strives to build a better life for herself despite repeated setbacks. Lancaster's performance is equally powerful as a man who idealizes a gangster lifestyle (drug dealing, murder, prison), despite never having achieved those things in any significant way. The almost childlike excitement he shows at the possibility of shooting someone is simultaneously endearing and chilling.

The only off-note for me was a pretty minor one. There's this whole plot element where every night Sally gets topless in front of her kitchen window and rubs herself down with lemon juice. I say again: a woman living in an apartment building that faces another apartment building routinely strips in front of an open window. She rubs herself down with lemon juice. It's revealed that this is because she hates the fish smell from the oyster bar where she works, which does nothing to explain why instead of washing her hands and arms, her entire routine is 90% breast focused. It adds this cheesy softcore element to the movie that made the whole thing feel like something that was made by an old perv, especially the second time we watch the entire sequence.

Very enjoyable and a totally satisfying narrative. I was worried about how the whole thing was going to wrap up, but it really sticks the ending.

Mon Oncle, 1958

This is easily my favorite of the Mr. Hulot films that I've seen (though I owe Playtime a rewatch).

The whole film looks like a living cartoon or graphic novel. It takes place is a hyper-technological alternate present. I LOVED the design of the house, which often had people looking out of those top windows so that it looked like two eyes with pupils.

This is maybe the most narrative and "personal" of the Hulot films--the main character spends much of his time visiting with his sister's family, hanging out with his nephew, and causing chaos at his brother-in-law's plastic hose factory.

I don't have much analysis of this one. It was pretty much a delight, though I did not enjoy the gang of sociopathic boys whose hilarious "pranks" always involved hurting people or getting people into confrontations.

MULAN
(2020)

First viewing. Definitely will be the last viewing too. I have never seen the original animated version of the film, so I had no frame of reference or an idea of what the movie was about. The story was predictable. The visuals were not groundbreaking. The acting was very bland. There were some enjoyable scenes. Overall, another forgettable live action remake that shouldn't have been made.

I have actually never seen the original :shifty:. Either that or I have and completely forgot I did. Might take time to watch it soon. This movie I have no desire to see. Wish they would stop remaking the old animated movies into live actions.

The original Mulan is a good time. I wouldn't say that it's great, but it has at least one catchy fun song and some decent comedy. I also have zero interest in the live action remakes (the nicest thing anyone ever seems to have to say about them is "not as bad as you'd expect" which . . .)

Just watched Mulan 2020 with the family.

The age appropriate/appreciation window is small here, but if you can put yourself into that mind frame I think this is a wonderful film.

On one hand the violence is a bit extreme for a Disney flick (ok it really isn't, but hey we should say it is). On the other hand the film is constrained to today's confining values on what a kid/young adult movie should be.

War, sexism, religion, ageism, etc... is difficult in most aspects, to try and make it fit into a film that kids can/should watch is difficult. I think the envelope was pushed with this film, but I also think it was pushed in a good way.

Really enjoyed watching this with the family.

Comin' At Ya!, 1981

What a fascinating mix of trash and treasure.

Two brothers who trade in kidnapped women storm a church, shoot the groom to be and take away his bride, Abilene. (By the way, if you've seen Kill Bill, the whole look of this scene will be VERY familiar!) The man, HH, survives the attack and sets out to save his love.

This movie was filmed in 3D. But not just 3D. It's like, insistent 3D. It's as if the filmmakers were afraid to let more than 3 minutes go by without reminding you of the whole 3D thing. The uses of the 3D range from the mundane (a man shucking corn into a barrell), to the awesome (a man dodges a flaming arrow which then comes straight at the camera), to the utterly bizarre (a naked baby's butt is lowered directly into the camera). I will not lie, I am a total sucker for slow motion sequences (especially in a grainy film), and I really enjoyed a lot of these parts.

The plot itself is pretty thin and basic. I felt that a bit too much of the time was spent on the kidnapped bride being menaced/abused by the kidnappers. There are a few memorable sequences. Some are pretty cheesy, like the women being attacked by what are clearly rubber bats on strings. But other moments are oddly effecting, like when the women are chased along a beach like a herd of panicked animals. There's not a lot of character development. Heck, there's not a lot of dialogue. From a story point of view there are few surprises.

I did, however, end up liking the overall style of the film quite a bit. It does have that grainy look, and at times it switches between color and black and white. In one sequences, a single character is in black and white as he walks through a world of color. The people making the movie definitely tried to do a LOT with the look of the movie and the use of different effects. It doesn't always work, but quite a bit of it did land for me.

It's definitely an enjoyable oddity.

I understand the reviews I've read so far now, where nobody seems to really love or hate this. It's pretty average all around, whether you view it as a comedy or drama. I never laughed really hard and the story is a bit winding and stretched too long. It's great to see Bill Burr on screen because I find him much more humorous than Pete Davidson, who I really don't see having much star power as an actor.

Good Time, 2017

A ne'er-do-well named Connie (Robert Pattinson) and his developmentally delayed brother, Nick (Benny Safdie) commit a daring bank robbery. During a botched escape attempt Nick is captured by the police. Over the course of a wild night, Connie goes to more and more extreme lengths to rescue his brother from jail.

I thought that this film was excellent.

To begin with, the performances are fantastic. The film is a mix of professional actors and first-timers, but everything flows perfectly. Rather than clunky line deliveries, the non-professionals add a vibe of realism. Holding the center is Pattinson as the scheming Connie. Connie's love for his brother feels genuine, but there's also a narcissism and brutality to Connie's love which means that he is willing to do some pretty horrible things to rescue Nick. Connie seems genuinely to not realize how messed up he is. In one sequence he berates another character for being a loser--then proceeds to list several attributes that we have seen from Connie himself. Connie's lack of self-awareness is also his superpower. He has the kind of charisma that comes from unwavering confidence, and it allows him to smoothly manipulate and draw others into his plans.

The supporting cast is also strong. Jennifer Jason Leigh is absolutely hilarious as Connie's much older girlfriend--a woman easily in her 40s or 50s who still lives with her mother and has some anger management problems. A sequence in which Connie tries to trick her into putting Nick's $10,000 bail on her credit card is amazing and one of the best in the whole film. I only wish that she had been in more of the movie. Benny Safdie (one half of the pair who also wrote and directed the movie) is solid as Nick. Much of what I wrote in my review of Joker kind of applies here: Nick is competent enough that he doesn't seem like he should be institutionalized, but at the same time he is suggestible enough and unpredictable enough that being loose in the world doesn't seem like the best thing either.

The movie looks great--there is a persistent use of hard and soft neon lights and tones (starting with a garish pink dye pack that explodes over the brothers during the bank robbery) that add a degree of surrealism and contrast with the grit of the surrounding environment.

The whole journey of the film and the character arc for Connie is fantastic. Connie's motives might be good (to rescue his brother from something Connie got him into). But backing up a step we see the way that Connie is basically a force of destruction. Everything he touches goes wrong--everyone who comes across his path ends up hurt. Yet Connie just keeps plunging forward, out of a sense of entitlement and out of a self-centered denial. I cannot say enough about Pattinson's performance and the brilliant way that the character is written. The movie never tries to romanticize Connie or even get us to root for him. It's more a question of seeing just how far he will take things, and how wrong they can go.

I'm genuinely kind of shocked that this film didn't get any Oscar nominations.

I don't think they called it "taking a stance", but Mulan was the first truly heroic female character (maybe aside from one of the mice in The Rescuers). As Ebert noted in his review of it at the time:

The message here is standard feminist empowerment: Defy the matchmaker, dress as a boy, and choose your own career. But "Mulan'' has it both ways, since inevitably Mulan's heart goes pitty-pat over Shang, the handsome young captain she's assigned to serve under. The movie breaks with the tradition in which the male hero rescues the heroine, but is still totally sold on the Western idea of romantic love.

But that break--having the woman be the heroic one--was significant. I can remember a male classmate at the time scoffing that it wasn't "realistic" that she'd be able to climb the pole at the training camp. It's hard to overstate just what a dearth of female action heroes (animated or live action) there were if you were a kid. Disney had quite a few plucky/opinionated female protagonists around that same time (like in Beauty and the Beast or Tarzan or The Hunchback of Notre Dame), but their main contribution to the plot was always to support a male character in achieving his goal. A woman triumphing through both physical ability and intelligence/strategy (instead of just because she is good or kind) was a new thing, even if they did still feel the need to shoehorn a romance in there.

Heaven's Burning, 1997

A man (Russell Crowe) driving for some criminals saves a woman they were going to kill and the two go on the run, pursued by the criminals, her psycho husband, and the police.

Decent, off-kilter premise. But the violence is a little too much and the film often feels like it's trying to be edgy (with scenes of torture and multiple instances of animal cruelty). The characters are all pretty one note, and the central romance isn't very convincing.

Yeah, it was not something I'd anticipated.

There's a "joke" sequence where the two detectives hit a dog that a woman is walking and keep driving. There's a sequence where a man on a motorcycle kills a kangaroo. And I feel like something also happened earlier in the film (I watched the first half over a week ago), maybe with someone killing a goldfish?

Anyway, it all felt incredibly tasteless to me.

Atlantic City was a wonderful film, with all the acting being first rate. Lancaster did few comedies, but he nailed this one.

As far as the "lemon" scenes, they were obviously prurient, but I think that was the point. Sally knew that Lou was watching her, which made their lustful first meeting that much more impactful.

I can't recall if I saw Mon Oncle. I did enjoy several of the Mr. Hulot movies as a kid, but the only one I can remember is Mr. Hulot's Holiday (1953). I suspect that many comedians were influenced by Jacques Tati, not the least of which was probably Peter Sellers in his "Pink Panther" roles. I think that Tati was an expert at physical comedy.

I'm okay with the idea that she was engaging with some intentional exhibitionism. What I question is why we as the audience had to see it twice. The second time around there's no new context, so it feels like the scene exists just to show off her body--a "meta" motivation that distracts from the reality of the film. Her answer that she uses the lemons because she hates the fish smell seems genuine, so I still think it's dumb that she never seems to rub the lemon on her hands or arms. Also, lemon juice is very acidic--something that would burn if she had the slightest cut or blemish--and the thought of rubbing lemon juice on any of my skin makes me cringe. Her character is otherwise very real feeling and grounded, so those sequences felt like the movie had suddenly been taken over by softcore land. The first one is sort of okay because it gives you insight into how Lou sees her. The second one . . .

I would definitely recommend it. The development of the family characters is really fun. There's a whole sequence with the wife installing a new garage door and the couple getting trapped inside. I liked it more than Mr. Hulot's Holiday because it felt like there was more character development, more of a story, and because I just loved the set design so much. It really makes the setting its own character--this very futuristic, manicured environment.

White King (2016)

Film about a boy and his mother living in a Dystopian community called "Homeland". The lad finds out that his father is not away working as he had been told but imprisoned for being a "traitor" to the Homeland. Good scrapes follow with the other kids in the community and attempts to contact/help the father through his parents (High up in the Homeland pecking order) and a corrupt lesbian General (Greta Scacchi!).

For its budget this does a great job and' whilst a bit simplistic, the characters are all believable and it carries its story strongly.
