Despite a rather formulaic plot and structure, Southpaw works due to a dedicated performance from Gyllenhaal. A more realistic take on boxing than anything you'll find in a Rocky movie, this film tries to be authentic. For the most part it works, even if it gets a little too heavy handed with throwing rocks at our main character when he is down.

You're right, he looks like an animated character.

Yeah, he should play Michael in a live action Anomalisa going by that picture.

Good film i see why it gets the praise it does. Was supposed to be watching this with my nephew while watching him, but he has a cold so his mum has stayed to watch him instead, too bad because i think i would've rated it higher if i watched it with him because he would have cracked up at certain bits i didn't making the experience more enjoyable for me. Well he is bringing over Home On The Range on Sunday to watch with me since his mum bought him it a few days ago and he hasn't seen it yet, thankfully i haven't either.
Anyway i did like the animation mostly, but i don't know there were certain parts that just didn't gel with me. The scene Hopps is travelling to Zootopia was stunning even though the song was really annoying. Hopps was really adorable and i liked her spirit she reminded me of Joy from Inside Out a bit except a lot scrappier which is something i always appreciate, funnily enough i knew nothing about this before watching it and i thought the fox was the main character like the poster i posted implies, obviously that is just a size thing which is funnily enough a point made in the film.
I overall liked the idea of a western society depicted with animals, this is of course not an original idea but i think they went further than most films; at least western animated films have. A few of the things did make me roll my eyes a bit, not because the scenes were bad but because they were making such obvious jokes like everybody who works at the DMV are sloths. The thing that i really hated about that joke is that it doesn't work both ways/ for all audiences like it is intended to. Kids may find the sloths pretty funny initially but i doubt it is going to be a notable moment that will stick with them. Adults may give a slight chuckle "ha, the DMV is slow", but it is not going to be a great bit of observational humour that cracks them up. I know i'm dwelling on one scene which wasn't supposed to be amazing or anything but there were a few during this which i groaned through and that one stuck out the most. I've noticed a few bits like this in Disney/Pixar films that just seem to me like the writers are saying adults this is for you and the kids LOL *wink*, some of them work really well but there are always a few that make me roll my eyes.
Anyway yeah good film, best of 2016 so far. FIlms i've seen from 2016

Can finally say I've seen a good non-Toy Story Pixar sequel. While the plot was fairly predictable, the likeable characters, great voice acting (especially from DeGeneres), and great animation made up for it, not to mention it hit plenty of emotions.

This movie has a lot going for it, and I think some members would love it. Musically and visually, it is very beautiful, and it has an elegant and charming way. I just couldn't get into the narrative.
What have you thought of Vittorrio De Sica so far Cricket? Just wondering because i have Umberto D and The Bicycle Thieves ready to watch, and you and Mark are the only ones here i know that have seen everything ever :p

Had this on my watchlist for ages.
It's very similar to Gansel's Die Welle where a social experiment goes wrong! What's great about this movie is that it's so realistic. Nothing happens that it couldn't happen on real life with real people on a situation like this one.
I love how every type of personality is transformed into a character and how can things go out of the control so fast!
The germans really know how to make great cinema!

Martha Marcy May Marlene/ Rewatch
I love this movie,I was surprised to go online and see that people didnt share my excitement for it.
Martha is a young girl, who after a few years without contact suddenly calls her sister in panick, asking her to come get her.
As they try to reconnect we slowly get to know more about Marthas experience living with in a cult and her disconnection to the real world. The movie only touches on the surface but takes us along from when she first joins to the day she finally breaks free-and the consequenses of leaving. The movie also depics her sisters struggle to understand her and make amends for the time apart.

A few things that keeps it from getting the highest score but contains spoilers
The only thing that really bothers and me about this movie is the sister and brother in law not trying harder to find out where she was or who she was with the time she was gone.Although it fits with the movie it seemed unnatural to not try harder when someone seems as troubled as Martha.
Also at the party at the end she (thinks she) meets someone from the cult,It seemes strange that when someone is screaming "we have to leave, hes out there" etc and acting like shes genuinly scared- the solution is not to ask who or what or try to figure out what is happening but to give her pills so she falls asleep....
I wasn't crazy about Martha Marcy May Marlene as a whole, but Elizabeth Olsen gave one of my favourite performances of the decade so far.
I agree, she really surprised me given who her sisters are
What didnt you like about? apart from the way too long and confusing title?
I think my fascination of cults plays a part of me liking it so much though, but i really like the tone of the movie.

I thought the fact that it only scratched the surface was a nice move. We get enough to understand what's happening but we don't get all the necessary pieces, so it leaves us with a sense of unease. That feeling is in my opinion what allows us to be more so immersed in the story and fully connect to the characters. We're ultimately taking that ride along side them instead of just spectating. At least that's my take on it. It's a great film.
Yes i felt the same thing!!
I only mentioned it because i see alot of people have criticized it for not going deeper

Glad to have finally watched this i loved it as i expected. This was visually spectacular like most Wes Anderson films, fantastic use of colour and gorgeous sets. As charming and quirky as all Wes films but with a slight darker tone than usual that i wasn't expecting. Ralph Fiennes was really amazing, i think he probably should have won the oscar out of those that were nominated at least. It wasn't just him though, the film had an amazing cast overall possibly the best this decade, i think everybody in it did a good job. Overall it was a very fun, funny film that looked stunning and had an interesting story and characters. Pretty much the standard for Wes Anderson

This movie centeres around a young french girl trying to come to terms with her sexuality. Her surroundings at school are not very gay friendly, and Adele herself seems rather confused about it all. She then meets a blue haired girl that cast all doubts aside.
now this one is difficult. On one hand you have a beatiful raw film,a beautiful love story,an amazing cast and settings. I dont know if its taken any inspiration from ****ing Åmål/Show me love-but its very similar. And considering thats one of my all time favourite movies thats not a bad thing. But then midways it decides to throw all of that out the window with a tacky porn scene.
I dont know if they thought the only way they would get people to see a movie about lesbians were to put on some girl on girl action but it could have been done in a different way.I dont know about you but i didnt go from virgin straight into the 69 postition. They also then cut straight from her being in school to her working which i found odd, considering the movie seemed to be based on her struggle with peoples unaccaptance-how did the rest of the time at school go? she obviously wasnt treated well the last time we saw her there?
this COULD have been a very high rated movie-possible one of my faves had they not ruined it midways.
But i hope to see Adele Exarchopoulos in more movies.she was definitly the highlight

If you haven't seen this Top-5 Vietnam war movie, you are living under a stone. I waited a long while to watch this movie again, and it still fu#!ing rocks.
The first 30 minutes or so demonstrates the sheer awesomeness of vociferously fierce Gunnery Sergeant R. Lee Ermy. Although his performance has been "memed" in bits and pieces a million and a half times, you must watch this again to fully immerse in the brilliance of this man and his performance.
Just one of many outstanding performances, particularly Vincent D'Onofrio as "Gomer Pyle", Adam Baldwin as "Animal Mother", Matthew Modine as "Joker", and Arliss Howard as the charismatic "Cowboy".
I honestly can't find anything negative about this film, it is just about perfect. For the maybe 1 of you out there who hasn't seen it, DO.

Yeah this was garbage pretty much. Fully deserving of the hate it gets, there are plenty of Disney films i don't like but i usually see that they were trying at least, this felt like one of those bad no effort Dreamworks films. One thing i didn't expect to dislike that much was the animation but i hated it, the film looked horrible. Every scene looked the exact same, really bad use of colour. Most of the jokes were really bad and actually pretty insulting, that they thought these were funny for toddlers even really pisses me off. Man Disney was in a bad way at this time, i can't believe they made something worse than Chicken Little. I don't mind Roseanne Barr but her voice acting wasn't good, i think even her fans would admit her voice can get a bit annoying i think she plays that up for laughs in her comedy sometimes like Jerry Seinfeld, or like Jimmy Carr's fake laugh. So it baffles me that they'd choose her to voice a main character in one of their films. I quite liked Jennifer Tilly's voice acting though, she has such an adorable voice that's were most of the 1 comes from. That and the fact that it was really short, surprised they managed to stretch this to 70 minutes even. The character were not good some of the weakest villains in any Disney film IMO. Not much of interest to be found in the story either. I mean what even happened? Maggie
appears at the farm makes a few dumb jokes then she's off on a journey to save the farm, some more dumb jokes and empty bonding scenes, Maggie belongs somewhere now for some reason the end  And oh god the songs .
My nephew liked it better than me, he is 3 though and i can tell he didn't love it or anything.
Glad he gave me an excuse to watch it because i've wanted to watch the Disney Animated Classics i haven't for a while now, next week we are going to watch Treasure Planet which i haven't seen yet.

Warcraft: The Beginning
Now I went into this expecting it to be terrible (Mortal Kombat Annihilation terrible) however I was surprised that I didn't hate it. This is not to say it is without its problems but all in all it was a solid video game to movie adaptation. The story is pretty basic but nothing worse that some of the medieval stories out there. The characters were likable and they served their purpose well, the actors also did a solid job making you actually care for some of them. Now onto the so so areas, the CGI and video capture was decent however there were times I looked and thought that they skipped over some of the editing. I also think that people who did not play the game may not enjoy it as much. I personally played some of them when I was young so I understood the characters and references they placed in to movie.

This was excellent. A pretty standard comedy-drama with a lot to like. I think if there was ever a truly awful character who is incredibly sympathetic then it is Steve. I felt for him that much at times that i think me using the word awful may be a bit harsh. His behaviour is pretty terrible, i think it does partially come from his mothers own behaviour around him, his disorders and his dad dying. I swear i almost broke down myself during the scene he was finally confronted. I absolutely adored the way Steve and his mum talked to each other, not talking about when he calls her a bitch or a whore or whatever when he is losing his mind. When there is nothing malicious behind it i love the way they talk and argue, it is still pretty hostile but some incredible closeness manages to come through during those times. Their relationship is pretty creepy at times but i must say i expected it to be a lot worse going from the title and the posters i've seen, that dancing scene when he starts feeling his mum up was pretty... yeah, it's nuts how Kyla reacts to it, just a few laughs then she joins them obviously. Great scene. My favourite character was Steve but i think the actresses playing his mum and Kyla gave the better performances. Actually i really loved Diane's character too. I really liked Diane's subplot of trying to get a job, there were so many "life isn't fair" moments there, the scene were she was walking home with a few groceries and her bag bursts then a neighbour who knows her comes out was just perfect. Those last 20-30 minutes were great.
Overall i loved this, funny and heartbreaking at times with interesting characters and some excellent dialogue.

Finding Dory - 3.5
In MovieBob's Jurassic World review, he mentioned that the very first Jurassic Park was part of the "Three-Star Spielberg Club". I feel a similar sentiment about Monsters, Inc., Finding Nemo, and even Up to a certain extent. Finding Dory falls somewhere in between the "Three-Star Pixar Club" and Inside Out, Pixar's recent seeming attempt in returning to its former glory.
Speaking of which, whenever people talk about Pixar nowadays, they would always mention how Pixar has fallen from grace, as if Pixar always had a stellar track-record that doesn't only apply to Toy Story movies. They forgot about A Bug's Life for starters, and as mentioned, both Monsters, Inc. and Finding Nemo in hindsight were merely average animated movies, not as fantastic as The Incredibles or as groundbreaking as Toy Story 2 (or 3, depending on your perspective). I could name the few movies that are truly deserving of such high praises on one hand (counting the Toy Story trilogy, Ratatouille, The Incredibles, and MAYBE Inside Out, but that's too soon to really soak in retrospection). I personally had fell into this delusion myself in my younger days, but having recognized the tired cliches and run-of-the-mill cartoon gags plastered over every Dreamworks Animation movies these days, it's really hard to stay a loyal fan blindly defending blatantly average movies. I would still prefer Pixar's down-to-earth smart writing over Dreamworks' "let's make cartoon characters do goofy things" routine, of course, but being better than a pile of **** is hardly a worthy accomplishment.
And that's another thing about movies that I've come to realize. I appreciate the value of money, as I don't earn much myself. So if I'm going to throw my hard-earned cash at movies, I expect to have a great time, like "Empire Strikes Back" great time, not a "Return of the Jedi-eh-it-was-okay" kind of experience. There are countless movies coming out every year. I can't just blindly throw my money at whichever and hope that it might remotely entertain me, and reviews by the so-called "professional critics" are becoming more subjective the more I view those reviews in how I ended up disagreeing with them. Which is why this movie is making me take yet another step towards not paying money to movies I think I might not have a great time watching. Why support an industry that pull a half-assed effort? If Hollywood thinks that it can just churn out mediocre movies like the feminist Ghostbusters and "I would go see it anyway", they've got another thing coming. James Rolfe's sensibilities about not watching a movie and not giving Hollywood the ammunition are in the right place.
Also, one last thing before I finally get on to the movie: bad movies are fun to make fun of, great movies are fun to watch, but mediocre and boring movies are in an especially terrible place because there's no redeeming value.
That said, most of the stuff I just written had nothing to do with Finding Dory than it has to do with my feelings about paying for 3-star movies, which Finding Dory kinda is. But even so, it's actually a pretty solid sequel that adds depth and layers to the predecessor while having laughs and whimsies along the adventure... for the first viewing. The thing is, much like many animated movies out there today, Finding Dory relies heavily on humor. To me, comedy is really a hit-or-miss genre. Some comedies are funny the first time but become shoulder-shrugging during a second or third viewing, especially if their purpose is more to distract the audience rather than having anything meaningful to add to the plot. Those comedic scenes are good for individual viewing when you look them up on YouTube, but it can be trying to sit through the entire movie and watch them again. Finding Dory's jokes, while some of them are kinda clever in the Pixar tradition (not to mention having the traditional adult humor snark hidden in them), I do feel that they take away from the impact of Dory's emotional predicament rather than add to it, the same reason why I didn't think Finding Nemo was all that amazing.
However, it's probably an inevitable writing style anyone would have fallen into when writing a story as potentially dark as this. And yes, Pixar teased how dark such a story can really become in the first five minutes of the movie. No punches were held, and Andrew Stanton practically told the kids that there's no Santa Claus and Easter Bunny. Dory's backstory was difficult to sit through, especially if you suffer from mental conditions yourself. In that, it's a far more mature story than it might seem. And that's also where the problem comes in...
There were many times when Dory would flashback to her younger self when she remembered her parents. The whole idea of how sad and terrible it was for Dory to lose her parents was hit over your head over and over again, flashback after flashback, till the point it became a little melodramatic. The worst part is that the anti-climatic ending didn't pay off. It didn't measure to the kind of stakes the film was building itself up to. The pacing for the final act just derailed the film into a generic Dreamworks cartoon where the characters do stuff humans would do but in a goofy fashion. It's like Stanton didn't know how to end the story, so he instead just winged it and threw in a last minute action sequence.
And the story was incredibly contrived, relying on 'fate' and 'destiny'. This is a more debatable point in terms of its effectiveness of telling the story, however, as it does fit into the overarching theme of the plot, the whole irony of the situation. For me though, I feel it's sloppy and messy. It was a good attempt and I could see what they were trying to do in terms of coincidences and ironies, but the writing's a bit clunky.
All that taken into consideration, I still had a pretty good time, I'd admit, and most of the returning fans who grew up with the first movie would enjoy this. There were so MANY allusions to the first film, constantly teasing about that thing that happened back then in Finding Nemo with a wink to the audience. It's fun and nostalgic to look back at them, but I can't say fanservice like that makes for a very good story. This is the equivalence of Han saying "Chewie, we're home" in The Force Awakens. Again, debatable whether if such entertaining value makes for a good movie. I feel that it's only good for the first viewing and forgettable and even annoying in the consecutive ones.
Wow. Seems like there were a lot more problems with the movie than I had initially thought before writing this.
In the end, however, I can't stress enough that this is an important sequel to the first movie, because despite all the little problems clogging the script, it took the characters from Finding Nemo and added compelling layers to them like what a proper sequel should do. Marlin reflects on his mistakes as a parent, and Dory's constant forgetfulness can sometimes be more heartbreaking to watch than it is amusing. Nemo kinda just tags along for the ride, but he plays an important role to Marlin's character development due to having a disability as well like Dory, albeit a physical one. There's a lot of heart to be found in this movie, and that ending shot is both a satisfying resolution and a melancholic reminder of what was lost in the very first scene of Finding Nemo. It's a perfect bookend like Toy Story 3 in the traditional Pixar style.

Freaks (1932) 6/10.
I actually enjoyed the documentary in the special features more than the actual main feature. What amazed me was how close American Horror Story: Freak Show was based on this movie - the characters are very similar and there's one scene in particular near the end that appeared in AHS. This movie was banned for 3 decades - interesting how society's views change. If you are a fan of AHS: Freak Show, I recommend watching this.

Zoombies - 2/10 - I asked some friends for a bad movie to review, and they recommended this piece of crap. From the name, I thought this was going to be about running zombies, but nope! They're zombified zoo animals! Basically, they tried to make Jurassic Park but with zombified zoo animals and it failed miserably! Poor acting, terrible dialogue and story, and crappy VFX. As far as B-flick horror movies go, though, I definitely prefer it over the Sharknado sequels and most certainly over 13/13/13...a movie should never go full 13/13/13...

This was my 6th movie from the great Indian director Satyajit Ray, and it turned out to be my least favorite so far. I love how his films make me feel like I'm getting a little taste of a different culture, and that was no different with this movie. The ending was potent, but I was struggling to maintain interest for most of the runtime.

Good film, it is my least favourite out of the five Welles films i've seen so far. That surprised me i thought there was a good chance of this challenging Citizen Kane for my favourite since it really looked my type of film. The main thing was that i was really bored during the first half, i'm not sure why exactly i just found myself not following it properly because i was struggling to say interested. Thankfully it really picked up during the second half and overall i'd say i enjoyed it, loved the ending. Welles was the highlight for me, he played the slimy, scumbag police captain perfectly.

This movie I bought while browsing a video store's sale section. It caught my eye as a movie that could be decent, and it turned out to be enjoyable. I wouldn't say it's a great movie, but it does have a pretty compelling story and a sympathetic lead. I was emotionally invested, although some of the acting wasn't great and the cinematography was pretty horrible at times. Tilda Swinton plays a significant role (I hate her characters hairstyle), and Jim Gaffigan has a small role. The story is about a teenage girl who gave birth in a bathroom stall, and uncovering the truth behind the incident. Did she murder her baby?

If you're looking to watch a tale about people surviving mother nature's harsh elements, do not look to this film. If you'd rather watch a film where ego and stupid decision end up killing a bunch of people, watch Everest. I still think that horror films are the better choice when watching people making stupid decisions and dying, but Everest is up there.
The film details the summit of Everest in 1996, where several people lost their lives. Jake Gyllenhaal and Jason Clarke play two mountaineers who take civilians up to the peak. Of those civilians, two of them are played by Josh Brolin, a rich Texan and John Hawks, an older man trying for his third time to finally reach the top. Along for the trek is a journalist recording the feat. An impressive cast, which is rounded out by Sam Worthington, Robin Wright, Emily Watson and Keira Knightley, Everest isn't short on talent.
I guess my problem is that the film fakes you into thinking this is a tale about survival, and for a few people it is, specifically Brolin who is left outside to die by a few men who have taken shelter. I guess this might be my own fault for not knowing the story beforehand, but seeing people literally give up and accept death is hard. It's even harder knowing that their bodies are still up there, in the world's biggest open grave, frozen for all time. It's disgusting to know that some people take the trek and pass these bodies, to take selfies with them. Scott Fischer's wife has mentioned her hatred for this and it's easy to see why.
While the film is impressive to look at, the lack of characterization makes connecting with these people a little hard. We get basic personalities to tell them apart and even then, it is extremely difficult to know who is who when they are climbing. I felt bad for the people back home who had to receive phone calls that their loved one isn't coming home, instead he's dead on a mountain and you'll never be able to bury the body. So why do this? Why risk your life to reach the top? The most common response, "because it's there". Good enough for some people. Being in the elite few who have reached the highest point on Earth is an accomplishment.
Everest isn't like Vertical Limit, people are not jumping around on the ice, performing impossible feats, it's grounded in realism. The image on the poster of the man holding on to a ladder for his life is in the film. It's probably the only time some kind of cinematic action takes place. The rest of the film revolves around them climbing up, slowly, then climbing down slowly. Don't expect action, or excitement, expect a depressing look at the people who don't make it back to the ground and those that do, are sometimes scarred for life, literally.

Zootopia
This was one of my favorite movies in the past few years, I hated Frozen and thought Inside out was overrated. The only other two I can think of that I enjoyed was Big Hero 6 and Wreck-it-Ralph. I am an animal lover so this really pressed the right buttons for a animated movies for me. The characters were all likable and the movie quips they put into this were funny. The two main characters and their voice actors did a great job as well as the supporting voice actors. The only thing I will say is that I found it a tad predictable and I guessed the "bad guy" about half way through. There was of course the under lying tone of discrimination and stereotyping which I feel Disney have done a bit too frequently lately. I am not sure if I would want Disney to do a sequel of this movie as I love the characters but not sure how much more development they could do.

This movie instantly won me over with the first character of the movie being played by the Wicked Witch from The Wizard of Oz. I had never seen this actress in anything else, and despite her short lived screen time, I got a big kick out of it. I wasn't expecting much from this movie with the thought that it would be a corny romantic comedy. There's humor, and there's romance, but this ain't no rom-com. In fact, it gets fairly heavy at times for it's era. Cary Grant leads a splendid cast playing an unorthodox doctor, and there are two engaging storylines. Throw in some strong dialogue and this ended up being a big surprise. I think most members would like this.

I think People Will Talk is a very underrated movie, and a hidden gem. I like the storyline about Professor Elwell trying to bring charges of misconduct against him better than the romance storyline. Parts of the romance storyline don't really work for me, but the movie as a whole is terrific.

A hard one to rate. A vicious little shocker then genuinely did have me wincing in parts, which for a movie is pretty hard to do. Can become quite slow paced at times and I wasn't overly impressed with Gallo's acting. Dalle however is great and its no coincidence that the majority of the best scenes are with her. It's certainly not a film for the faint hearted and its easy to see why it has got panned so much but for fellow gorehounds, I'd recommend it, even just for shock value alone.

Independence Day: Resurgence (2016) - rating_1_5+
Unless you really want to see the big spectacle set pieces on the giant screen, save yourself the hassle, stay home, and watch the first Independence Day instead.
This movie lacks the charm the original ID4 had, and while it tries really hard to hit the same notes, it ultimately just falls flat. The younger characters are not interesting (and it was a mistake trying to get Half a Hemsworth to play a character similar to Will Smith's from the first film), the jokes mostly fall flat, and the final confrontation doesn't have the same weight and impact as the first Independence Day, despite having supposedly higher stakes.
The action is good overall, and the effects looked great in IMAX 3D, but it's worth noting that the theatre was practically empty. There was maybe 15 or so people there (including myself and my two room mates) on Friday evening, opening weekend. That's not a good sign.

This isn't a movie I would ever pick out if I wasn't watching randomly from various MoFo lists for the 50's countdown. It's a British comedy, very lightweight, somewhat amusing, and with a perfect runtime of less than 90 minutes. A big hook to the movie is having the lead actor play a male and female character. I'm sure it was uproarious back in the day, but it's old hat now.

I just had to go and brag about how much I liked John Goodman, didn't I? Well the shine got tarnished a little last night. His attempt at crazy consisted of looking to the side and squinting. Walter Sobchak was more menacing and believable than Howard was.
It didn't help his cause, that the script did him no favors. No spoilers, I just don't see a psycho in the corner reading a Doomsday Prepper weekly, while being oblivious to all that was going on around him. His motives were fuzzy or else it didn't make sense to me. Did he always have a penchant for doing what he did? Did he make a facility just for this activity, which happened to come in handy the day all hell breaks loose?
And the last act of the film. Do yourself a favor and just stop the movie.

Just saw Midnight Special, this is an exceptionally good film, ok perhaps not the most commercial film ever made so it lives somewhere between sci-fi and art-house, but well directed and well told story that captures you from the get-go mainly because the film leaves so much of the information out - and fills in the blanks as it goes. In fact I think the film has a lot in common with E.T. even if it's not obvious. 9/10

Did he make a facility just for this activity, which happened to come in handy the day all hell breaks loose?
I don't remember the exact quote, but he did state in the movie that everyone always thought he was crazy for having a doomsday bunker, and there is clear evidence that he's done something similar before:
He had previously abducted and murdered a high school girl. He claims that the picture and clothes he has in the bunker belong to his daughter Megan, but it's later revealed that they belonged to a missing girl named Brittany instead. Michelle finds a message reading "HELP" on an outside window, and when the perchlorate acid is brought out, it's pretty obvious what happened to Brittany.

That part I understood. What seemed muddled was what his intent for building the bunker was. Did he build it first for a doomsday or psycho activities. Did he finish it and think, "Well, I spent all this time and the world hasn't ended yet...might as well do this and put it to good use."
I may be barking up the wrong tree, but I needed more backstory. The consistent actions of the girl didn't vibe with how he handled them. It makes me feel he had a plan for them, but it was never explained or hinted at.

Clocking in at a quick 87 minutes, The Shallows never strays from what it knows it is, a heart thumping survival flick. The plus side to the film is that it deals with a shark and Blake Lively in a bikini for the majority of the film.

This film, which is well over 3 hours, is a compilation of four different sex tales directed by legendary Italian greats: Federico Fellini, Vittorio De Sica, Luchino Visconti, and Mario Monichelli. Enjoyable trio of comedy-dramas with some of the most beautiful and sexiest women: Sophia Loren, Anita Ekberg, and Romy Schneider. All the episodes combine humour, sensuality and light drama. Visually stunning with great lead performances. I must admit that I liked the second tale far and away the best: Fellini's "Le tentazioni del dottor Antonio" is the highlight of the film. Overall, worth a watch. 3

This was alright, i only watched it because it was 50's, it was on Netflix and it was on the Sci Fi list. I liked the story and i loved Gregory Peck's character and performance. Really didn't like Anthony Perkins at all though, disappointing since i adored him in the only other movies i've seen him in Pyscho (and Pyscho 2 and 3 actually) and The Trial.
Wild Strawberries - 4.5-
https://s32.postimg.org/q4nfuam4l/wild.jpg (https://postimage.org/)
This was amazing. I liked all three of the Bergman films i'd seen before this The VIrgin Spring, Persona and The Seventh Seal, i didn 't love any of them though and was starting to think Bergman was a director that i respect but i don't really love so i'm really glad to have watched this. Along with The Seventh Seal this seems to be Bergman's most praised 50's film so i thought i should give it a shot. Not gonna lie though from what i'd heard it was about i expected to not like this at all. So i was surprised to find an incredibly moving film with excellent performances. Victor Sjostrom gives a top ten perfomance for me. Really exceptional film, i think i remember Swan saying to me he hadn't seen this yet, knowing how much of a Bergman fan he is i hope he and everyone else gives this a try before sending in their 50's list.

This was a pretty good western, and not the coyboys/Indians type. I actually liked Gary Cooper more in this than I did in High Noon. He plays the main character, a doctor with a past, and not exactly a nice guy. Karl Malden is terrific, and I don't think there's anyone better at playing a weasel. George C. Scott has a small role in his first movie, and he's a scene stealer. The movie looks right and has a good theme song.

The Odd Couple (1968)
Up until now, I'd only watched the TV series but wanted to see the movie. For me, they are similar in story, but different animals. I truly loved this movie. Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon co-star in what would be their second of ten films together (although one featured Lemmon as director and Matthau as star, and one would have them not appearing in a scene together among an all-star cast). This one is truly funny, with the by-now familiar story of hypochondriac neat-freak Lemmon moving in with slob Matthau after Lemmon's wife throws him out. Things are fine at first until Lemmon's anal retentive ways drive Matthau up the wall and it's all-out war between the two. The supporting cast is fine but Lemmon and Matthau are the whole show. Great fun and great acting.

Tillie's Punctured Romance (1914)
The first film of famed silent-turned-sound actress Marie Dressler, who was a large woman who pulled some of the greatest faces in cinema. Here, her leading man is Charlie Chaplin, playing a character who looks a bit like his Tramp character, but is a con-man who runs away with Dressler because her dad is a wealthy farmer. He makes sure that the cash goes with them of course. His real girlfriend (Mabel Normand) is waiting for them in the city, where he proceeds to dump Dressler after stealing her money. She gets work in a restaurant. It turns out that Marie has a rich uncle who apparently dies in a fall down a mountain. She inherits his fortune and of course Charlie finds out and dumps Normand and runs off to marry Dressler. Lots of back-and-forth in the story, but the stunts and performances are what make the movie. Dressler, in addition to her great expressions, does a fantastic neck swivel when she's mad, and her and Charlie spend half the movie kicking each other in the butt. The last third of the movie is spent in her uncle's mansion with a huge party and dancing going on...or attempts at dancing going on. Then some shooting and a huge chase involving the famous Keystone Kops. At 90 minutes, it really never flags and it's a huge treat seeing Dressler and Chaplin in earlier roles. Highly recommended, especially if you like slapstick.

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014)
The second "Sin City" movie from Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller, and although the title infers that it's just one story, like the first film, it has several tales, most of which criss-cross each other. And Mickey Rourke's character, despite his tale finishing up in the first film, is back as Marv, the sometimes confused bruiser who helps out a couple of our characters here. Bruce Willis returns, despite his fate in the first film, although it's easily explained. The beautiful Eva Green is the "Dame" of the title, and she is indeed to kill for. Josh Brolin replaces Clive Owen as Dwight, this being a story before Dwight's tale in the first movie, which results in Dwight getting a new face, which here is supposed, I guess, to resemble Owen's but I'm not too sure. Dwight is the sucker who keeps going back to Green, with bad consequences. Her "protector" is the chauffeur Manute, played last time by the late Michael Clarke Duncan, this time by Dennis Haysbert. If you see a pattern of actors being replaced, it doesn't really change the tone of the movie or the enjoyment. Also returning in their original roles are Rosario Dawson, Jessica Alba, Powers Boothe, and Jaime King. New to the world of Sin City, in addition to the aforementioned actors, are the excellent Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ray Liotta, Christopher Meloni, Jeremy Piven, Christopher Lloyd, Juno Temple, Stacy Keach, and, ahem, Lady Gaga. And she is pretty darn good, to be honest. Just like the first film, there is the green-screen process for most of the movie which works fine in Sin City's world, the hard-boiled story-telling, and the Tarantino-like style of tales out of order or time. If you liked the first one, you'll more than likely dig this one, too.

I love action movies, and while there is some strong action in this movie, I'm not a huge fan of the war type. Give me Die Hard or Commando over this or Black Hawk Down all day. I would have also liked to have seen some name actors. There is certainly something to having a no name cast in a movie based on a true story, but it is a Michael Bay film after all. The only person I recognized was friggin Gail from Breaking Bad, which I watched about 15 minutes earlier. On a side note, there were an awful lot of beards in this movie. This was a pretty solid movie, but not exactly for me. My wife ended up liking it a little more than I did.

Except for a couple less than exciting episodes in the latter half, this was an amazing season. I am literally drooling all over myself in anticipation for more. That season finale, and the way it ended, "yeah".
I thought Season 3 was the best one.

I ended up enjoying this more than I imagined, but some of the issues really seemed to derail the movie at times. I don't know where I would rank it in Tarantino's filmography, but it is not near the top.
The first problem was the dialogue. The early stagecoach scene was glaring to me with it's stilted delivery. If his attempt was authenticity, maybe it was justified. It just seemed to drag down things and lacked the fluidity I associate with Tarantino.
The bloodwork really left me shaking me head. It wasn't the volume or graphic nature, but the absurdly unrealistic depiction. It just seemed like schlock from someone who couldn't afford to do it in a better manner. Then again, who am I to question an auteur?
There were parts that I enjoyed immensely. The Minnie's haberdashery set was amazing and a gem to behold. Jennifer Jason Leigh was the top of the class here and SLJ surprised me (even though I really disliked the snow-walk scene).

Loved this. David Lean is starting to become one of my favourite directors, he has an incredible knack of making these mammoth films interesting throughout. At no time during this, Lawrence or Arabia or Doctor Zhivago (which i like quite a bit less than these two) was i looking at the time or hoping this would end. This is a great achievment for one film to be like this, but three to be like this despite their massive length for me anyway is amazing. I loved Guinness' character. His steadfast refusal to work because the Japanese weren't following international law and all the punishment he went through reminded me of Cool Hand Luke except he was doing it for a reason, something important. The scene when he finally wins and the soldiers run to congratulate him was great. When Saito tells him this and he just lets out a sigh of relief as if "thank god" before composing himself and buttoning up his shirt before proudly walking out in front of them was a nice touch. I wasn't as crazy about Holden's character but i did like his storyline. Colonel Saito was a good villain. He started off as a typical tyrant but you ended up seeing that he was just a member of a harsh regime under extreme pressure to complete this difficult task. Loved the ending and Nicholson's realization of what he has done and what this place has done to him. Anyway fantastic film which will make my 50's list. Kind of want to watch all of David Lean's films i haven't seen right now haha.

We Need To Talk About Kevin - 4
https://s32.postimg.org/xlsqy8or9/keving.jpg (https://postimage.org/)
Very good film. I really like Lynne Ramsay. Not seen Morvern Callar but i watched Ratcatcher a few months back which i liked a lot. Along with Andrea Arnold who i also like a lot i think she is one of the bet Female Directors and just directors in general i know about working right now. I felt terrible for Eva throughout she looked like a nervous breakdown on legs throughout. Her early struggles trying to bond with and understand Kevin as well as her meeting with him in jail were well done. You could really see her pain and frustration watching him get along with his dad so well. Tilda was fantastic, one of my favourite performances from this decade so far. It was scary who well cast the young Kevin was that kid could grow up to be Ezra Miller. Both were solid, they gave out a very cold and vindictive manner especially when you consider how well he acted around his father. That was the most terrifying thing about the film how she was the only one who sees any of this happen, it was almost funny at times like when he slams his yoghurt down on the table then 2 seconds later when his dad comes in he runs towards him "daddy how was work did you take any cool pictures?" :D
I'm glad it ended the way it did i was half expecting a loving mother and son moment which would've felt mushy and out of place. I liked how it basically Eva showing she still loves him while it was the closest Kevin would ever come to this which was still incredibly cold and emotionless. Really good film.

Spiderman 3 really isn't that bad, it's just got such obvious flaws that people like to poke holes in it. It's just corny at times and if you were to take out a couple scenes it would be a fine movie.
There are definitely holes big enough to poke.

This is a French movie from the Ebert list. A new young priest arrives in a small town, a bit on the quiet side, and not doing well emotionally or physically. For whatever reason the locals treat him like an outcast, and this is his story. I've been having trouble lately getting into the more challenging movies, and this was no exception. I still liked it and thought it was extremely well done. I would have gotten more out of it if I were on top of my game.

Yeah that's what I'm saying there are obvious holes, but a lot of the movie is salvageable. I think if they had done some re-shoots and a little bit of editing in some of the corny spots it could have been a passable film, instead we got emo-spidey and everyone hated it.

Lets see, it has a lot of good and bad elements happening at an easy pace. The protagonist was pretty lame (he cried like 3 times), and the acting was really bad, the best performance was the crazy Messiah in the park - great town, New York. The plot even gets kinda complex towards the end with the ghost of Christmas future thing but they've got it covered with the weak ending.

Independence Day: Resurgence (2016)
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/5/58/Independence-Day-2-poster.jpg
I really liked the 1996 original movie. Call it dumb entertainment or, in fact, call it whatever you want but for me it was not AN alien invasion movie, it was THE alien invasion movie.
It had everything. The special effects were great not only for their times, but I'd say they still hold up impressively today. The aliens were exactly the kind we are all programmed to have a healthy hate for. The story was simple but it did carry enough tension and emotion to get the viewer invested.
That last element is the only thing that is missing in Resurgence. After 20 years of waiting, a brilliant advertising campaign and good trailers we got the movie we were expecting but with a fatal flaw: it failed to evoke proper emotions in the audience. In fact, it was one of the quietest theater experiences I've ever had. Nobody said "Hell yeah!" after the aliens got defeated. Nobody went "omg" when the aliens destroyed half the planet. Nothing.
I walked out feeling emotionally unabashed and went on to check the critics' consensus on Rotten Tomatoes right after. They agree and so do I.
Somehow they've made a movie in which the end of the world is imminent and nobody gives a damn.

Important revolutionary figure Dr. Sun is coming to town -- one group is hell bent on killing him, and one group is hell bent on protecting him.
Very loosely based on the Xinhai uprising, which dismantled China's last Imperial dynasty, this is a bloody story of the sacrifices made. So many good cast members in this (Donny Yen even takes a back seat). Fantastic fighting, which when backed by a good story, makes it even better.
Despite some oddities, like Yan Xiaoguo's insanely funny war face, and lots of rickshaw madness, this is a fantastically dramatic and bloody tribute to the heroes lost during the Qing Dynasty revolution.
Long, but very satisfying.

FALLING FOR YOU (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=uGxryL_IsUc&list=WL&index=13)
The movie centeres around Meg Crane, played by Jennie Garth, who falls in love with a guy who just happenes to be a serial killar who likes to
throw his girlfriends out the window. She wakes up in the hospital but doesnt remember how she got there or who put her there. The police tells her what happened to her but she doesnt trust them after a cop had hurt her mother when she was younger.
She goes on television to give an interview-which means the killers finds out shes not as dead as he thought she was.
This is a 1995 made for tv movie-and you can tell. However its still a fairly good movie and really entertaining.
Its misses a few great opportunities to build tension-like when the two of them gets stuck in the elevator together-and it has some obvious flaws. I remember liking this when i was younger-maybe because, like every other teen,i was obsessed with beverly hills-but i still quite like it. If you have nothing better to watch then this isnt the worst you can end up with. bonus points for the ending.

Bridge of Spies (2015)
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/f/fa/Bridge_of_Spies_poster.jpg
My Polish teacher at school always said that the mark of a good movie is when you can sum the story up in one sentence. I say this is one of the reasons why Polish movies are rarely praised internationally.
So here's the sentence: a lawyer is given a mission to defend and then exchange a Russian spy for an American spy, but he decides to try and free a Yale student captured by the Russians as well. That's all there is to this movie.
So, all in all, my complaint is that not enough has happened in the movie, especially not enough to facilitate the 141 minute running time. As a result, the movie, especially the first half, was rather boring and only the good acting and cinematography saves it for me as a decent way to pass the time.

From the top 100 noirs list; it's an Indian movie, so right off the bat it was cool to see something different. The DVD print is not the greatest quality, but it turned out to benefit the atmosphere. There are sudden musical numbers scattered throughout, which caught me off guard. Maybe this is a Bollywood film? I cant believe this is real life. This is a very important movie as it reveals the major flaws in both humanity and the legal system-i hope it was a big deal when it was released.
I,at first, didnt think it focused enough on the legal matters-it seemed to kind of breeze past it even though it was mentioned alot. Later on it touched down on it again a bit harder-but i still think it could have spent a bit more time on it.I also felt like it was a bit too fastpaced and messy at times-too many shots and people speaking over eachother when it should have been making a point of what was being said. But its still hard to criticise as obviously its a friend making it,trying to come to terms with what happened.I definitely cried-several times.i was not expecting the ending.

I thought this movie was expertly done, and for a good portion of the runtime, virtually faultless. However, it's done in a little bit of a safe manner preventing it from being especially memorable or truly great. I also thought it got a little sappy towards the end, which was fine for me since I generally don't care for spy related films. To just be entertained on a Saturday night, I thought it was fantastic.

I haven't seen this yet. I was worried about it being another one of those "quiet horror" films that actually have nothing that resembles horror. I'm still watching it, but it's a bit disheartening if my predictions are true, considering your review.
Del Toro doesn't consider it a horror film. It's a gothic romance featuring ghosts.

This is a documentary done in the same style as Dear Zacharcy-a friend filming interviews with friends and family, sharing pictures, stories and old videoes.
the only difference is the story behind it and this time its 15 years later.
Matt Shepard was a 22 year old boy who was beaten to death for being gay-and while his parents were trying to have a funeral for him anti gays were protesting outside.
This documentary offers interviews from his parents, his old friends, his newer friends, the police officers and the priest of the men who murdered him.

The Shallows: 4: A very fun summer movie. Blake Lively has a career best performance, the film is tense in parts, and the use of color is striking. Not realistic in any way, but if you know what you're getting into its highly enjoyable.
Lucy: 0_5: Historically awful. Holy **** this was a terrible movie. Bad acting, painful screenplay, pathetic over-editing, mediocre action. It's the kind of blockbuster that's too self-serious to be fun and far, far too stupid to be anything else. I don't really care about the 10% thing, this fake scientific rumor that drives the plot, but the film is just completely awful at everything. There's no real plot, there are absolutely no characters, and it doesn't seem to have a genre. If it was trying to be an action movie, it fails because there is only one action scene. If it was trying to be a thriller, it fails because the protagonist is (by design) invincible, so there's nothing to emotionally care about or build tension. If it was trying to be a philosophical sermon, it fails because it mixes very obvious symbolism and very basic themes about humanity with blatant incorrect science. I like plenty of movies because of the "feel" of them, even though they don't contain a plot or characters, but Lucy is not unique or stylized enough to get by on that. If you like this movie, I genuinley want to know why, because I cannot think of a single positive aspect of it.

The Verdict (1982) - 4.5
A tragic film about grief, pain, and the compelling search for the truth and it's absolutely beautiful.
