I don't know if this would be your cup of tea, Citizen Rules, but it turned out to be quite an unexpected pleasure for me:
Can You Ever Forgive Me? (2018)
Tells the story of two eccentric NYC characters who scam book sellers by forging letters by famous authors. And it is based on a true story, from a book written by the forger herself.
After failing to make a hit with her last biography, writer Lee Israel is up against a rock and a hard place. She has gotten herself fired from her day job by insulting her boss and is scolded and left hanging in the wind by her supercilious, cold, arrogant agent - played to PERFECTION by Jane Curtin , in a role that was tailor made for her. Lee is a grouchy, disheveled, hard drinking New Yorker whose one of two joys in life is ambushing anyone in range with scathing insults. - the kind of person who you'd cross the street to avoid. Her only other joy is her cat, who she adores with all her heart and well above any human being she encounters, including her ex girlfriend and a waif like possible new love interest who she winds up selling forgeries to.
She also winds up as a friend - of sorts- and co conspirator with a gay male companion, of self described charm, and who has enough self destructive tendencies to fill a small planet. And indeed these two are in a sort of insular planet of their own in 1990s NYC.
Lee, out of work and (oft by her own mechanisms) out of friends, is unable to pay her rent and facing the possibilty of becoming the bag lady she appears to be. So she hatches a plot to sell 'letters' of famous writers to book sellers and collectors, and takes a perverse pride that she is a skilled enough writer to forge them, and fool all these high toned rarified book dealers.
And, most surprisingly to tthis viewer, she winds up gaining our empathy and understanding. We come to root for her struggle to survive the hardships of being a single artist in a time and place in history where high rents and gentrification are driving out the very people - artists, writers, musicians, etc. - who gave the city its creative zeal. And part of that empathy is that when Lee's scam is about to be discovered and revealed to the authorities and she's facing some serious consequences, all the dealers who were ( perhaps not so unwitting) accomplices in this ruse seem to escape unscathed. I will not spoil the movie, but there's a scene of good and realistic irony at the end when Lee lets a dealer know she's on to him.
The movie is also terrifically funny as it propels us through a unique and quirky world that I don't believe we often see in films about a great cosmopolitan city. Melissa McCarthy turns in a top of the line performance as the grouchy, eccentric, yet likeable Lee Israel.
Really enjoyed his movie - a crime drama that's somehow a comedy. I didn't expect to like the cfaracters at all, but wound up enjoying this 'too odd to be true ' true story, and its surprisingly winsome two main characters.

My theory on the above...
I thought that at first, but a lot of people have suggested that Ben actually sells pretty girls into trafficking and that's why he was so wealthy and didn't seem to have a job. When his friends come over, he may be showing off his latest girl to sell to them.
However, he probably puts it in a more exciting way to the women themselves, telling them he is going to help them build a new life. They don't realize until it's too late and they are taken away for prostitution or organ trafficking. That's why Shin Hae-mi calls Lee Jong-su at the last minute, when she is being subdued by the kidnappers. Then Ben must have turned off her phone, tidied up her apartment and taken in her cat.
As for the items left in his apartment... it's normal to forget things and leave them behind when you're in relationships. So either Ben has a habit of quietly snatching these items when the girls aren't looking, or he just collects them after he sells the girls, because they would leave some things behind at his place.
What a wonderful theory. Makes sense actually. My mind forgot about that last phone call.

I'm a huge fan of Marton Csokas, liked the down to earth character he played. Charlotte Gainsbourg is one of the best actresses alive, the role was made for her. Not sure why Jim Carrey decided to make this movie, but okay. Very exquisite film, vulgar sex, vulgar thoughts, cold behavior, the actors were well chosen, with the exception of one, maybe.

Liked the picture especially, it's the most important, or one of the most important things in this kind of movies, because they are made out of our curiosity, and since I don't have the curiosity most people have about the future I'm stepping on unknown territory.

The plot will have a especial meaning for those who live in the Iberian peninsula, Italy, France, Greece because it shows how the underground world of criminality interact with the puppets (politicians) we see on television. It explains how/why politicians are moved to certain companies, why politicians create there foundations. It gives a interesting perspective of how the European politics work. Americans should learn a little bit how to make action scenes with this Italians, not bad.

Best of this directors work I've seen. Relies on the performances of the main actors and that's no problem at all...Gibson, Vaughn and Kittles (especially) are excellent.
Nothing new or groundbreaking but a well made solid modern thriller.

3rd Re-watch...Above all, this movie is a testament to the directing genius of Ron Howard. Apollo 13 is surely his masterpiece, but this film is definitely #2...this is cinematic storytelling at its best. Anchored by a near brilliant screenplay, Howard crafts a taut nail-biter that rivets the viewer to the screen with almost unbearable tension...I love the edgy elements of the story that raise it above the average kidnapping story...I love that Tom Mullen is partly responsible for his child's kidnapping...I love that the kidnappers are not the cohesive unit that they should be...I love the way Tom makes a move at the halfway point of the film that turns the entire story on its ear...Howard creates some terrific cinematic pictures here as well...I love Tom watching his son's science project flying away or when he runs across the street and almost gets hit by the van carrying his son. I love at the moment when little Sean is grabbed he is behind a stone column and we don't actually see him being grabbed...Howard did everything right here...this is also one of the few movies where an extra ending totally works and has the viewer pulling their hair out...the performances are superb down the line...Mel Gibson has never been better and Gary Sinise brings the ugly to Jimmy Shaker that the story requires. I don't know why this film has been nearly forgotten, but suspense fans who have never seen it should treat themselves.

A Dark Place (2018)
Originally entitled Steel Country, neither title is apt-- the incongruity of which speaks to the lack of steam taking the film into its final chapter in a movie that otherwise is fairly enjoyable.
The picture's story is a familiar whodunit, where we're shown the murdered young boy at the beginning, then left to follow along the plot as they gradually discover the murderer and its coverup.
In this case the "detective" is a youngish sanitation worker who is either retarded, afflicted with a neurological condition, or is perhaps suffering from PTSD. That's not made clear. But he becomes obsessed with the cause of the little boy's death, presumably because the boy used to wave at the garbageman from his doorstep.
There are only two worthwhile aspects of this picture to recommend: the first rate acting by Andrew Scott (and also by his character's partner, Bronagh Waugh), and the wonderful atmospheric photography by Marcel Zyskind.
The production itself is not without merit --it even has a certain comfortable feel about it-- but it is the weak screenplay that tarnishes the effort. The show was only 89 minutes, but it felt longer. The fact that we're left to wonder why the protagonist has taken such an unnatural interest in the boy's death removes a chunk out of the story's believability.
Still, the film is worth a watch for the acting and cinematography. It's also interesting that it's a UK film starring mostly Brit actors, shot in Georgia; but none of that is noticeable, as it feels like an American production.

The 16th Episode (Jerome Cohen-Olivar, 2019): Three YouTubers attempt to gain more viewers for their adventure channel, only to find one of them possessed by a demon and the other two must find a way to help their friend. While there are tense moments, the duo of Einar Kuusk and Cody Heuer find themselves giving each other beats of comic relief as an outlet for both the fear and anger they endure along the way and it works quite well. It brings something fresh to the demonic possession genre.

This movie have many questions, but we have enough evidences to support the rich guy killed her: the girls watch in Ben's bathroom, the cat responding by being called by name. The scene where Lee Jong-su burns a small piece of the green house is to give the viewers the idea of how fast the plastic would have burned. We now know that Ben was lying saying, it would need gas and ten minutes to burn a entire green house, what would need gas and ten minutes would be Shin Hae-mi body.
What really got me was when I saw the theory being floated that
Ben is not actually a serial killer/human trafficker but helped Hae-mi disappear and leave her unsatisfactory life behind (dead-end job, debts piling up, the previously loving Jong-su flat-out calling her a whore after the topless dancing scene) - considering that she had already become unrecognisable via plastic surgery once, it can be inferred that Ben is a plastic surgeon, which not only explains his wealth but also his ability to help them disappear by making them look unrecognisable. Jong-su chooses not to confront this possibility by instead constructing the narrative where he is the avenging hero and Ben is the unambiguous villain, therefore justifying his investigation and eventual vengeance to the point where he doesn't even try to accuse Ben of this crime before straight-up killing him. This much is reflected in the sub-plot about Jong-su trying to help his father avoid jail time for a violent crime - not only is it about getting the neighbours to sign a petition about the dad's upstanding nature that they don't personally agree with, but it also implies the possibility that Jong-su has the same capacity for needless violence that his father has already demonstrated (to say nothing of how his parents had already split up and he'd grown up with said father). Considering how many other instances there are of the truth being rendered questionable (e.g. Hae-mi supposedly falling down a well that never seems to have existed), the idea of the film reaching an unquestionable conclusion regarding Ben's guilt seems too easy. I don't think it's necessarily wrong to reach that conclusion, but I do think the rest of the film's ambiguity should at least factor into its ending as well.

Iroquois - that's a good one. If Ben isn't a "villain" then that makes the most sense considering how popular plastic surgery is in Korea.
What about the girls though, why would he have a relationship with them? Is he still just trying to gain their trust so that they will give him their money?

Shazam (2019)
Everything about this film was weird. It felt like a movie from the 1980s but set in 2019.
Part of it is that I really don't like the "kids magically becoming adults" storyline. I think it's creepy. Why couldn't he just be a superpowered teenager like Spider-Man?
Besides that, the "supervillain" was boring, there was no interesting conflict or character growth with anyone... and the monsters would be too scary for young kids, so this wasn't a "family" movie. Who is it supposed to appeal to, 12-15-year-olds only?
Idk. I just kind of find it hard to believe that a film like this becomes a major blockbuster in 2019.

My third from Sorrentino and all 3 have been excellent. Might be a stretch to call it a mafia film with a difference but we'll run with that. Sorrentino favourite Toni Servillo brilliantly plays the main character Titta, a loner with a dark past. The camera work is amazing and its such a stylish movie right up until the end, which feels a bit random. Good movie though.

This 52 year old comedy still provides solid entertainment thanks to a sophisticated and witty screenplay by future TV icon Norman Lear, sharp direction by Bud Yorkin, and terrific performances from Dick Van Dyke, Debbie Reynolds, and Jason Robards...Van Dyke is a real eye-opener here, nailing a character who is light years away from Rob Petrie and Bert the Chimney Sweep. This was actually his first post-Rob Petrie film project.

Dawn of the dead (2004)
Difficult to remake what many people view is a truly great movie. George Romero knew a thing or two about making zombie movies (I need to watch the trilogy again) I imagine he was taken back by how good this was. I’ve no embarrassment in saying this is the greatest zombie movie I’ve viewed. Character arcs, difficult situations that would definitely occur, lots of shotguns, sprinter zombies, and of course the zombie celebrity lookalike gets shot by a sniper mini game. 9/10

Better than I expected. A blind man (no, don't think Bird Box) and an expecting police officer find themselves working together to survive a zombie outbreak in their small Ontario community. Good job from the leads Liv Collins and Adam Seybold.

The Commuter [2018] ⭐️⭐️
Liam Neeson stars in this action thriller, as an insurance salesman who is caught up in a criminal conspiracy on his commute home from work. I thought this film showed some promise in the first 30 minutes. Neeson's character seemed to get a bit of development and the mystery woman on the train provided a good level of intrigue but unfortunately, I thought the film fell apart from that point.
I didn't find the plot engaging and the middle part of the film was a bit dull. I found it hard to muster any enthusiasm for the other commuters we got to know and who out of them were the possible suspect/witness. And Neeson striding up and down the train got a bit repetitive. There were a couple of good action scenes but it just didn't live up to my expectations.

Snooze factor = Zzzzz
Film had a lot of problems, apparently including Val Kilmer who couldn't speak during the filming due to cancer treatment, and it showed. Also changed a few things from the book that could have made the film more interesting.
[Snooze Factor Ratings]:
Z = didn't nod off at all
Zz = nearly nodded off but managed to stay alert
Zzz = nodded off and missed some of the film but went back to watch what I missed
Zzzz = nodded off and missed some of the film but went back to watch what I missed but nodded off again at the same point and therefore needed to go back a number of times before I got through it...
Zzzzz = nodded off and missed some or the rest of the film but was not interested enough to go back over it

What I like the most about the original Godzilla is that, not only does it carry a profound message with plenty of social commentary - it tells a simple and very humane story in a very believable, at times almost documentary manner. The special effects may look dated by today's standards, but to me, it only adds to the movie's unique visual charm. Absolute classic!

Bagdad Cafe (1987)
This charming, off beat indie picture has the same appeal now as it did in 1987. Done the same year as the Coen Brothers' Raising Arizona, it's not quite as zany, but every bit as enjoyable.
Directed by Percy Adlon, a German national who relocated to the U.S., the film stars Jack Palance, Marianne Sagebrecht (popular German dramatic actress), and CCH Pounder. "Bagdad" refers to the whistle stop village in the California desert between the CA border and Barstow, although nearby Newberry Springs, CA was used as the film's locale.
A German lady (Sagebrecht), after a row with her tourist husband, leaves him in a huff, and walks to Bagdad. There she meets a cast of off beat characters anchored by a black family who tries to eke out a living in their small cafe, motel and gas station. Palance plays a retired Hollywood studio set painter who lives on the property in a small mobile home, and has turned to portrait painting.
This sets up plenty of interaction between the unusual characters, and culminates in a very satisfying ending. The only weak part is a lengthy amateur show tune sequence which feels out of place, and strains credulity. Still, this is basically a comedy, and the take-away is very warming.

This is a 5/5 film.
Performances are brilliant both from James Spader and Maggie Gyllenhaal, they managed to exploit the full potential of this film.
I've read a lot saying that it is a romantic comedy but honestly to me being on the submissive spectrum I do not see this film comedic at all, of course it has a few giggles but it is in general very cautivating and serious.
It shows the struggle of accepting who you are and turning it into a healthy thing rather than pushing it down and letting it completely take over when you explode.
Eitherway, good film :popcorn::popcorn::popcorn::popcorn::popcorn:

Classic alien invasion movie from the '50s, with dated (but fun) special effects and a whole bunch of cold-war/atomic age paranoia.
Not scary at all and often childishly silly to the point of being an insult to H.G. Welles' legendary novel, but taken on its own terms, it's still decent enough to be entertaining.

It is an interesting experience to watch something that is so devoted to one band or era. Two of my favourites, Career Girls (1997) and Butterfly Kiss (1995) create a similar atmosphere, with the Cure and the Cranberries dominating respectively.
I thought Elliott Tittensor was very good in the lead role. Lesley Manville was great as usual too.

A wonderful film. I recall vividly seeing it when it came out. While watching, I felt certain there was no way to defeat the aliens-- a pretty demoralizing thought..:(
To me, this film, along with Forbidden Planet, are the two best space films of the '50s.
The more recent version had a lot more going for it technically, but it may not have had the same impact on the public as did the original.

Not many know but at one time I was a big fan of Jim Sheridan. I loved all his movies until he did "Get Rich or Die Tryin". I thought, "What is this Irish director doing making American gang films!" and I just stopped watching his films. I ran across "Dreamhouse" on cable and watched it and thought "This isn't as bad as everyone says". Today is the day he has redeemed himself as a director of extremely good historical Irish films. This story is about a woman and the three men involved in her life. A search for long lost love and family.

Like the poster says, the most talked about movie of 1987. After this umpteenth viewing, I am not only convinced that Glenn Close was robbed of the Best Actress Oscar of 1987, I'm thinking that Adrian Lyne might have been robbed of the Best Director Oscar as well. His work here is absolutely sublime. Dan and Alex having sex in the elevator...that juxtaposing of Dan and Beth and their BFF's bowling while Alex sits home alone switching that lamp on and off with the MADAME BUTTERFLY tickets sitting next to the lamp... that unbearably tense scene where Dan comes home to find Alex and Beth talking...this is all the work of a masterful director, one of the most underrated in the business. This movie ranks up there with some of Hitchcock's best work...hasn't aged a bit since 1987.

Miss Sloane (John Madden, 2016)
An unethical political lobbyist does whatever it takes to sway Senator's votes on an upcoming gun control bill. CR
Director John Madden (Shakespeare in Love 1998) serves up an intriguing story premise in 2016's Miss Sloane, that unfortunately is saddled by contrived dialogue and feels more like a Showtime TV show than a hard hitting movie about the sleazy insider world of D.C. lobbyist.
While the lead Jessica Chastain is capable don't expect a performance like the one she gave in the riveting Molly's Game (2017). While both Miss Sloane and Molly's Game have similar themes about a hyper driven woman who will succeed by deceit, underhandedness and self control...Miss Sloane fails to deliver any heart felt emotions. The films pathos is austere as a stainless steel office and as cold as a D.C. winter.
I blame the coldness of the film on it's attempt at slickly written dialogue that's suppose to sound like insider lobbyist 'speak'. Maybe that sounded good in the early stages of production, but what appears on the screen is all style with little substance. I kept wishing the movie would shift gears and tell a compelling story like Spotlight (2015) had done, but nope as the film dragged on about the only thing of interest was Jessica Chastain's wardrobe. Sure Jessica looked great, but I can't say I though much of her 'goon squad.' Who in the hell thought it was a good idea to pack her high roller lobbyist team with a bunch of goofy rejects from TV's Friends. OK, they weren't really cast as extras on Friends, but they had enough inane quirkiness to have been extras on some TV sitcom.
Miss Sloane needed less 'clever'...aka...contrived written dialogue and much more story narrative. A healthy dose of character and world building would've helped lift Miss Sloane to something worthy of it's subject matter.

I have but I cannot remember it well. I saw it when I was watching a lot of noir, and unless it was something I loved, a lot of them blend together. I do love Jeanne Moreau though.

One of the most rawest, most human, brilliantly realistic and tragic films I've ever seen. A short silce of time in the lives of a few neglected souls in the USA.
Harmony Korine is a great film-maker.

Camerawork is marvelous, acting is superb, the script is... well, it's Die Hard but with airplanes. Honestly, I love this movie, it's my 'marvel' film or maybe just another guilty pleasure.
Jerry Goldsmith's soundtrack is cheese, patriotic and suspenseful at times, perfect for the movie. Gary Oldman rocks, the man is terrifying.
Initially, I rated it 3 out of 5 but I'll be lying to myself with this rating, so:
★★★★
I love a lot of things in this film, including the old CGI :p

Yeah, I had a hard time rating it tbh as up to when the slide set in I was actually really enjoying it but after that point it started to irritate me more and more. Could easily have rated it as low as a 2 but opted for a somewhat generous rating in the end because of those first twenty-something minutes.

More a love story featuring gangsters, than gangsters featuring love. Not packed with action and not hard to follow but its a great movie. The acting stands out, in particular the two leads, who share great chemistry. There is a really tragic scene, which I'll not go into but it definitely stayed with me.

Annabelle Comes Home has quite a bit in common with Godzilla King of the Monsters in the sense that this is a film about a collection of ghosts tormenting a group of young people over the course of the night.
The non-CGI horror is very good (The Ferryman is a huge standout for me). I also enjoyed how the film takes place over the course of a single day and evening which is a great framing device for the film. It has it's issues but at the end of the day I'll give it three stars

A really biased "documentary" on Brazil's impeachment. It is a well-made narrative from a technical standpoint although it is not a real "documentary" which is supposed to portray facts. Instead, we get a terribly biased narrative that denies the enormous number of crimes committed by Lula and his cronies, instead of presenting him and his cronies as victims of the "evil elite". It shows the problems with the Brazilian radical left: these people simply deny reality and live in a fantasy bubble. Although I would not recommend this movie to people that do not follow Brazilian politics (as they will get brainwashed).

Get Out [2017] ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Jordan Peel's director debut and a critically acclaimed high rated Rotten Tomatoes score really made me curious to see this film and it didn't disappoint. This mystery thriller focuses on a young black man, Chris who goes to meet his white girlfriend's family for the first time, but their keen interest in him takes a dangerous turn. This film very effectively built itself up, the tension was created well as the mystery of what lay beneath the genteel facade of the Armitage family really ignited the film and brought it to life. As the revelations came to the forefront, there were plenty of thrills to be had.

The End of Evangelion (1997) - Double Rewatch on DVD and Netflix 4.5
So I've been watching Neon Genesis Evangelion on Netflix over the past few nights; this was actually my first time seeing the series to completion because of the absurd prices the now out-of-print DVDs tend to fetch. I knew tonight would be when I reached the end of the series as well as the follow-up film, End of Eva. I wanted to have Manga Entertainment's 2002 English dub fresh in my mind to compare the brand new 2019 VSI Group/Netflix dub to so I pulled out my 2002 non-anamorphic Manga DVD and rewatched it before watching it on Netflix after finishing the series. So how do the two stack up? Both are pretty solid if you want my opinion, but I think I like the Manga dub a little better in spite of its flaws. Sure, there are times when you can tell Michael Ross and Keith Burgess are just reading as Fuyutsuki and Hyuga, but they're not in the film long enough to destroy it and the Manga dub still has some of the voices this Eva fan knows and loves, namely Spike Spencer as Shinji, Tiffany Grant as Asuka, and Allison Keith as Misato. Comparing the two, Casey Mongillo is pretty good as Shinji. He doesn't "sound like an actual girl" as some have claimed. With that said, Spencer, who had consistently voiced the character in English until Netflix made this decision, captures the character's soul with aplomb and nails his development. On top of that, Spencer's screams blow Mongillo's off the table. To me, Spike Spencer is Shinji Ikari. It's that simple. Stephanie McKeon is pretty good as Asuka, too, but I still prefer Grant's take. Grant simply nails it and she perfectly captures this character. I mean, Grant's German blows McKeon's off the table. Just like Spencer as Shinji, Tiffany Grant is Asuka Langley Soryu as far as I'm concerned. Some have claimed Grant "sounds like an old hag," but I disagree. Grant sounds like an actual teenager and so, too, does McKeon. Carrie Keranen is solid as Misato, but Keith simply commands the screen when Misato appears. I mean, just compare the conversation between she and Shinji by the elevator. There's way more emotion and force behind Keith's, "So f--king what if I'm not you?!" You've probably guessed by now that if you ask this Eva fan, Allison Keith is Misato Katsuragi. Tristan MacAvery and Ray Chase are both pretty good as Gendo, Shinji's father, but John Swasey bests both as far as I'm concerned. So too are Amanda Winn-Lee and Ryan Bartley as Rei Ayanami, but this Eva fan prefers Brina Palencia. Same with Sue Ulu and Erica Lindbeck as Dr. Akagi, but I prefer Colleen Clinkenbeard. And I prefer Caitlin Glass as Maya Ibuki over Amy Seeley or Christine Marie Cabanos. While neither dub script is completely natural, the Manga dub's is more so. The Netflix dub has this idiotic "Third children" crap going on, which is wholly awkward and unnatural. It's not the perfect dub I'd hoped we would get with the Rebuild dub cast - which includes Spencer, Grant, Keith, Swasey, Palencia, Clinkenbeard, and Glass - and a completely natural dub script. It's not the dub we deserved and it's not the dub Eva deserves. I guess with next year being the 25th anniversary and the final Rebuild film about to finally hit, all we can do is hope it won't be terribly long before Funimation finally gets the rights to Neon Genesis and End of Eva and produces that dub. Moving on, the HD transfer Netflix got a hold to is a massive upgrade in video quality, though Shiro Sagisu's excellent musical score is more powerful on the old DVD's DTS 6.1 track. With all that said, the film itself is still a rewarding one in spite of its own flaws, an unflinching look at the dark side of the human condition and what makes life worth living. Shooo... I think I'm gonna go to bed now. I feel drained after writing all that.

A unique film that is both very funny and thought provoking. Although some of the gags do verge onto slapstick, it still manages to have a quite serious tone based on an estranged father-daughter relationship. It is a long movie at 2hours 42mins but there's nothing wrong with the pacing at all. I loved the performances from Ines and Toni, you could really feel the tension between them and the two party scenes were the highlights.
Probably not a film for everybody but sure what is. I loved it.

Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson
15 minute short / music video starring Thom Yorke and featuring his music (2 songs). It's very interesting to look at. Reminded me of Mishima in places. It's based on some Jungian philosophy about the routineness of the male human conscience and how it only evolves once it's found it's female counterpart (or something along those lines).
A must for fans of PTA and / or Radiohead.

For those of you who love fine painting and their artists, Wyeth is a "must see". Seasoned director/writer Glenn Holsten's magnificent and fascinating documentary about Andrew Wyeth --one of America's finest painters-- puts us inside Wyeth's mind, his studio, his family, and his life-long use of his native eastern Pennsylvania for subject material.
Director of photography, Phil Bradshaw, captures such beautiful landscapes and interiors that they would be absorbing alone as pictures. His artistry beautifully compliments Wyeth's paintings and story. The narration is very tasteful, never pushy.

A Raisin in the Sun (1961)
One powerful drama! and a film classic. Based on the stage play, this is all about intense dialogue, fervent emotions and brooding drama that grows and grows until it reaches the boiling point. In that way it reminded me of A Streetcar Called Desire.
I'd give the first hour a solid 5/5 for it's dynamic character interaction and powerhouse dialogue. The second hour goes more broader in it's character's actions and I preferred the more tightly focused 1st hour. I'd give the second half 4/5
The film broke new cinema ground bringing to the screen for one of the first times the issues of black identity and cultural awareness. A must see film for both it's place in cinema and for it's historical hard hitting expositions.

The Perfect Storm
https://images.metadata.sky.com/pd-image/3f52e658-1afe-4e23-b6ad-d8724ac15fad/16-9
★★★★
The first point that caught my attention in this film was the 'fishing' - which I find a terrible and cruel thing, and here is portrayed in a realistic way, all the impiety before the fantastic beings that inhabit the seas of this planet — from swordfish to sharks — being horrible killed, I confess that this realism made me uncomfortable to the point of having to pause and do a quick search on the violence contained, I found a cozy truth, Petersen did not even use a real fish during the filming - and back to the movie ... even with that accurate information, everything was still incredibly terrifying, a great feat!
There is a lot of negative criticism about the filmy, especially the lack of backstory on some of the characters, of course, much more could have been explored in George Clooney's character, by far the most complex of all of them, but The Perfect Storm is not about their characters, but rather about an event. The English/Original name is much better than the one we got here, and I do not understand the reason for the exchange, after all, "The Perfect Storm" not only sounds better than "Sea in Fury" in portuguese, but also matches the events proposed by the narrative, including the phrase is sung at a certain moment.
In Air Force One the soundtrack, Jerry Goldsmith knew well to balance the patriotic moments and of the tension, however, in Sea in Fury, the trail of James Horner is pure hunting nickel! There is a lack of identity, a lack of accompaniment to the events on display - such as the climax, where the track insists on slow tones already used in excess during the most dramatic moments, and when finally it decides to follow the fast pace, the sequence ends.
More terrifying than fishing, it is the event, I recommend everyone to watch with the best image quality possible, because its special effects continue to holds up, without embarrassing moments like the Air Force climax. The sea in this film is scary, and sometimes beautiful: nine-meter waves; the tone darkened; the closes on the moist and frightened faces, the open plans of the boat, like an insignificant needle in the middle of the storm.
Petersen departs from the easy protagonism formula, and adds some other characters (all linked somehow to catastrophe), some work, like the crew aboard of another boat; the drama of the rescue team; the slight participation of the man of time, astonished by the storm itself; the character of Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio (she's very good here)... and a few others, do not work, is the case of all the arc of the character of Diane Lane and those who are waiting for news about their loved ones.
The Perfect Storm is a staggering experience, as I said, this is a film about one event, and although not perfect, this storm deserves to be rediscovered. It's one of Petersen's great films.

I can't help compare it to Hereditary. And the bottom line is - it is not as good.
Hard to really review it without spoilers. There are flashes of great cinema with some lovely visceral shots and shocking imagery. Florence Pugh is great. But there is just too much here of a derivative nature and too much that doesn't really feel like it makes any difference. I sense there were alot of discussions over the final cut - as I'm pretty sure there are scenes that are in the trailer that didn't make it into the film. That tells you all you need to know about the pacing, and the middle of the film just felt too long.
That said, it is worth watching and has some very memorable scenes.

The Mule (Clint Eastwood, 2018)
Clint Eastwood produced, directed and stars in this story of a 90 year old man who drove drugs across country for a powerful cartel. It's not an action packed thriller-chase movie, so if you go into this with that mindset you're going to be disappointed. Except for a few brief tension filled moments, the film is laid back and directed in the no-nonsense style that has became a hallmark of Eastwood. You won't find flashbacks and flash-forwards...you won't find three different time frames presented in the same movie...and you won't find shaky cam or 360 degree rotating camera shots. Like I said this is no-nonsense story telling, pure and simple.

The Burial of Kojo (2019)
This was presented through the eyes of a young preteen girl, who believes in magic and mysticism. I think that the audience should be able to grasp the truth of what happens, although it is still rather confusing because we aren't shown the outcome with the villain. It was nonetheless interesting to see a scenic snapshot of Ghana, as they make very few "cinematic" films (mostly settling for low-budget soap-operas that are released on YouTube).

Always saw this on people's top movies on here. Really didn't know much about it. Didn't even know it was a French movie. Very entertaining and quirky. Has a sweetness to it that was much needed. Visually stunning as well. Sitting there the whole movie trying to place the lead actress, she looked familiar. Looked afterwards, she was in The DaVinci Code. She was wonderful. She can really tell a story with her eyes. I am an introvert myself so her portrayal of one really hits close to home and will stick with me for awhile. I can make plenty of friends and have and people enjoy being around me, but I've always preferred being alone. Going sound like a big dumb American but I'm surprised this hasn't been remade in English/Hollywood. This would translate well for an American audience. I really enjoyed it but some things just get lost in translation to me when I watch a foreign flick.
Anyways I'd give it a 3.5 out of 5.

Lol well I finally figured out where "I am mad as hell and I'm not going take it anymore" finally came from. Man isn't this movie just as timely as ever. Very well acted all around. Some really great scenes in this movie. I can see why it is such a classic and won all those awards. But it suffers the same fate as many old classic movies I watch, from my perspective, it can drag. This is probably best saved for another post for another day but I just feel like Hollywood found a way to better keep your attention in the 80s and mastered it in the 90s. It's like they tighten movies up after that period. It's a rare feat for a movie prior to 1980 to not have me looking at my clock wondering when it's over. This sounds like I am killing it but I'm just from a different generation I suppose. Doesn't mean I can't appreciate its greatness, I'm just not wanting to jump back in and watch it again. Happy I watched it. Hard to explain. Bet anything this gets remade within 5 years because of its revelance.
Anyways I'd give it a 3 out of 5.

A frustrating film. Could have been a real gem but the script just isn't quite nailed - some of Bruce Dern's dialogue I found a bit hokey and some of the more melodramatic scenes felt a bit too forced and maybe rushed.
The positives are that it looks gorgeous, Gideon Adlon (Pamela's daughter) was pretty good with her limited screen time, and there are some lovely moments (the best of which is with real life convict horse advocate Thomas Smittle). The duality of Matthias Schoenaerts' character (Roman) being so similar to a wild Mustang in the horse program was done quite well. And I thought the ending was beautiful.

Well, what can I say? I'm a true fan of the original "The Wicker Man". I compare this film to the OTWM and Robin Hardy's "The Wicker Tree". Each film has developed over the age of the film. However, my heart still goes to the original pagan cult movie. There were similar aspects of this film to "The Wicker Tree" in this movie. I was expecting a bit more from this film. The gore was good but not great. The story was about the same as "The Wicker Tree". I enjoyed this and it made more sense to me than "Hereditary due to that I understand the rituals of Western Civilization Occultism vs Mid Eastern Occultism. Overall, it was enjoyable.
I really enjoyed seeing the face on the teen boys sitting not so far from me on certain scenes. It was laughable.

Evangelion 1.11: You Are (Not) Alone (2007) - Rewatch on Blu-ray rating_5
Many consider You Are (Not) Alone nothing more than a condensed version of episodes 1-6, but more discerning Eva fans will notice that even here, Rebuild is going in a different direction. For one thing, the oceans are red and the first shot of Rebuild is identical to the final shot of End of Eva, which makes the time loop theory interesting to consider. There is also the outline of what looks like a Mass Production Eva. The characters have also changed in subtle ways. Shinji doesn't isolate himself as much and he already has a cell phone where in Neon Genesis, he doesn't until Misato gives him one. Misato also knows everything about the secret hiding underground... and she's taller in Rebuild. On top of that, when Kaworu makes his brief appearance at the film's endgame, he speaks as if he's aware of the previous timeline. Hideaki Anno has changed the story somewhat, but it's still a great one and I for one find that the changes affect this outing for the better. As a result of the story happening in chronological order, the battle scenes, especially Shinji's first where Unit 01 goes berserk and Operation Yashima, are more intense and thrilling this go around, supplemented by Shiro Sagisu's excellent musical score, which comes across loud and clear on the Dolby TrueHD 6.1 track without drowning out the dialogue. The stunning animation has also improved and colors are more distinct, especially eye colors, which, in Neon Genesis, often looked almost black aside from Rei's. All of this comes across very well on the 1080p transfer. Funimation has also produced an excellent English dub and some of the cast who dubbed the original series has returned here. Spike Spencer is once again excellent as Shinji Ikari, the Third Child whose father has railroaded him into piloting Unit 01 to defeat the Angels, beings from outer space who want to obliterate mankind. Spencer has a way of capturing this character's soul, of making him likable, sympathetic, and easy to root for. Also returning is Allison Keith who is also excellent as Misato Katsuragi, Nerv's operations director who takes on the task of being Shinji's legal guardian. So too is John Swasey returning from the Platinum Collection DVD dub as Gendo, Shinji's father who is the commander of Nerv and hasn't been the same ever since they lost Shinji's mother, Yui, bringing more depth to the character than Tristan MacAvery and Ray Chase did. Brina Palencia is marvelous as Rei Ayanami the First Child and pilot of Unit 00, affording the seemingly emotionless character more depth than Amanda Winn-Lee and Ryan Bartley did. Colleen Clinkenbeard is also great as Dr. Ritsuko Akagi, a friend of Misato's who may or may not have a thing going on with Gendo. Haruhi Fujioka herself the great Caitlin Glass knocks it out of the park as Maya Ibuki, a computer tech who could easily get away with being Shinji's long-lost sister, finding an even keel that perhaps only Kendra Benham and Monical Rial could match of the other actresses who have dubbed the character. So too does ADR director Mike McFarland as Makoto Hyuga, another computer tech. Same with Phil Parsons as Shigeru Aoba, yet another computer tech. Justin Cook and Greg Ayres are also excellent as Toji Suzuhara and Kensuke Aida, who befriend Shinji at school, as are Kent Williams as Kozo Fuyutsuki, Gendo's right-hand man, and Jerry Jewell in his brief appearance as Kaworu Nagisa at the end and the dub script is completely natural.

Evangelion 2.22: You Can (Not) Advance (2009) - Rewatch on Blu-ray rating_5
Anno follows up You Are (Not) Alone with a worthy sequel. He has the story drift even further from NGE, but this helps Rebuild form its own identity which being a shot-for-shot remake certainly would not. I for one like that Asuka isn't fawning over Kaji like an idiot; even if only a little, it means Asuka is more mature in that regard, though of course, she's in just as much denial as ever regarding her feelings for Shinji. The battle scenes are also as thrilling as ever and the incident with Unit 03 is even more intense since Shinji knows Asuka is on board. It's also interesting that the memories of Second Impact shown here look a lot like Third Impact from End of Eva. And why does Kaworu call Gendo father when Gendo and Fuyutsuki find him on the moon? Is he perhaps Shinji's brother? And why does Mari look so much like Shinji and Asuka? I mean, she has brown hair with a red tint and blue eyes, the latter of which is a trait only herself, Shinji, Asuka, and Gendo are shown to possess in the Eva universe and there's also the fact that she has no trouble piloting Unit 02. It makes it pretty easy to see why some think she's Shinji and Asuka's daughter hopping around time. The animation is certainly up to par with the first one, stunning in every way possible, which Funimation has reproduced well on the Blu-ray's 1080p transfer, while Sagisu's musical score is once again loud and clear on the Dolby TrueHD 6.1 track, as is the dialogue and Megumi Hayashibara's Please Give Me Wings (Tsubasa wo Kudasai); on a side note, I've listened to different versions and no one sings it like Hayashibara. Funimation has produced another excellent English dub. The principal cast from You Are (Not) Alone returns here, including Spencer as Shinji, Keith as Misato, Swasey as Gendo, Palencia as Rei, Clinkenbeard as Dr. Akagi, Glass as Maya, McFarland as Hyuga, Parsons as Aoba, Cook and Ayres as Toji and Kensuke, Williams as Fuyutsuki, and Jewell as Kaworu. The big news here, though, is that Tiffany Grant returns as Asuka Langley Shikinami, the tough, cocky, and bullheaded Second Child and pilot of Unit Two who is a new incarnation of NGE's fan-favorite Asuka Langley Soryu in the character's introduction to Rebuild, with excellent results which is the rule rather than the exception when Grant is behind the microphone. Glass's fellow Ouran High School Host Club alumni Kyoya Ootori himself J. Michael Tatum also joins the cast as Ryoji Kaji, an old flame of Misato's who unexpectedly pops back into her life when Asuka arrives from Germany, and he is also excellent, perfectly capturing the character's cool-headed personality and somewhat twisted sense of humor. Trina Nishimura (who is actually of Japanese descent if her name didn't already give that away) is also excellent as Mari Makinami, the mysterious Fourth Child who may have closer ties to the main characters than they realize, and the dub script is completely natural.

Evangelion 3.33: You Can (Not) Redo (2012) - Rewatch on Blu-ray rating_4_5
Anno is back at it and he drifts even further from NGE. By the time Shinji meets Kaworu in this installment, he has been asleep for 14 years, the Earth has faced major destruction in his absence, and everything has changed as Shinji finds himself treated like a criminal and told he will die if he pilots an Eva in a world he no longer understands and faced with a Rei devoid of all personality who remembers nothing while he gets drawn into his father's plans once more. Another notable change is that Gendo didn't take Yui's surname in this timeline and we hear from Fuyutsuki that her maiden name was Ayanami. In this same scene, Fuyutsuki shows Shinji a photograph of his mother. If you pay close attention to the far-right side of the photo, you can see a young woman who looks a whole lot like Mari, which begs the question of what she was doing all the way back there, supposing it is, in fact, her. Though some may find it confusing and this outing is more dialogue-driven than it is focused on Angel attacks, the story is still up to par. The animation is once more stunning in every possible way on the 1080p transfer. Sagisu also provides yet another excellent musical score, though the Dolby TrueHD 5.1 track is somewhat subdued in comparison to the previous outing by the film's very nature. Funimation has produced yet another excellent English dub. Returning are Spencer as Shinji, Grant as Asuka, Keith as Misato who is now the commander of Wille, a new organization that has arisen to destroy Nerv, Swasey as Gendo, Palencia as Rei, Clinkenbeard as Dr. Akagi, Glass as Maya who is now a kick-ass maintenance chief giving the computer techs orders, McFarland as Hyuga, Parsons as Aoba, Williams as Fuyutsuki, Jewell as Kaworu who has a bigger role in this outing - though his role was no less pivotal to begin with, and Nishimura as Mari. Felicia Angelle is also excellent as Sakura Suzuhara, Toji's younger sister who is scarcely seen in the entire franchise aside from a brief shot in You Can (Not) Advance and the dub script is completely natural.

Independence Day (1996) - Rewatch on Blu-ray rating_4_5
Roland Emmerich won't go down in history as one of the greatest directors of all time, but he's made a few good movies with Independence Day standing out as one of his best, perhaps even his finest hour. I can't speak for anyone else and I know there are some who consider it a complete waste of film - though I have never understood and will never understand that logic, but I grew up with Independence Day. It's one of those films I remember fondly from watching it with Dad. Independence Day simply works as a pure popcorn muncher and a fun and exciting film. The story is way better than some make it out to be and the performances follow suit. Some (the ones who rag on him for everything, I've noticed) have criticized Will Smith's turn, but I always thought he did an excellent job in this film. So do Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum, Margaret Colin, Mary McDonnell, Vivica A. Fox, Judd Hirsch, Robert Loggia, Randy Quaid, and all the rest, including a very young Mae Whitman who would go on to play Amber in Parenthood. It's also absurdly quotable. "Welcome to Earth." "I could have been at a barbecue!" "Let's nuke the bastards." "Get some fighter jets and get us some G--damn pilots who can fly 'em." "Today, we celebrate our Independence Day." "I have got to get me one of these!" I've seen it dozens of times in the decade or so since I first saw it and for me personally, it never wears out its welcome. With that said, I guess it's no surprise I ended up double-dipping on the 20th anniversary edition when I ran across it in Big Lots for $5 even though I already owned the 2008 Blu-ray. The anniversary edition comes from a then brand new remaster and as someone who's seen Independence Day a whole bunch of times, the 2016 Blu-ray blows the 2008 Blu-ray off the table. The improvement in color and the uptick in detail is stunning. The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track seems to be the same one from the previous release, but that isn't a bad thing, David Arnold's musical score loud and clear with dialogue following suit. The new one is stacked with extras, too, so if you're wondering whether I recommend this release or not, you betchorass I recommend it. It's everything a fan of Independence Day could ask for.

Summer Wars (2009) - Rewatch on Blu-ray rating_5
Some films are simply magic. Such a film is Summer Wars, arguably Mamoru Hosoda's finest hour as a filmmaker. The story is an amazing one. Some have criticized Hosoda for melding two different kinds of films as one, but that's one of the exact reasons I enjoy it so much. Hosoda and co-writer Satoko Okudera frame the story around what happens when a virtual reality system is hacked, but it's about so much more than that. At its core, Summer Wars is a film about the value of family and human connections in an increasingly digital world, something all too easily forgotten and therefore all the more relevant in today's world. Matching up to the story is the amazing animation with character designs by Neon Genesis Evangelion co-creator Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, whom Hosoda has used on all of his films. Said animation really pops on the Blu-ray, too. Akihiko Matsumoto provides an excellent musical score, which is, like the dialogue and Tatsuro Yamashiita's Our Summer Dream (Bokura no Natsu no Yume), loud and clear on the Dolby TrueHD 5.1 track. Funimation has produced another excellent English dub here. Michael Sinterniklaas, who would later voice Taki Tachibana in the Your Name dub he co-directed with his co-star Stephanie Sheh, is excellent as Kenji Koiso, the math genius who ends up in way over his head after he solves the wrong problem. Fun fact: Ryunosuke Kamiki who voices the character in Japanese would also later voice Taki in Your Name. So is Brina Palencia as Natsuki Shinohara, the girl who puts Kenji on the spot by claiming he is her fiancé. Pam Dougherty is marvelous as Sakae Jinnouchi, Natsuki's soon-to-be 90 great grandmother who is arguably the heart of the film even though she makes her exit halfway through. So too is J. Michael Tatum as Wabisuke, the black sheep of the Jinnouchi family, using the same voice he used for Kaji. Credit also has to go to Maxey Whitehead as Kazuma, John Swasey as Mansuke, Mike McFarland (who also directed this dub) as Shota, Vegeta himself Christopher Sabat as Katsuhiko, Todd Haberkorn as Sakuma, Colleen Clinkenbeard as Noriko, Caitlin Glass as Nana, Bulma (and Renge) herself Monica Rial as Yumi, Shinya Kogami himself Robert McCollum as Yorihiko, and Patrick Seitz as Kunihiko and the dub script is completely natural. Shooo... I think all that writing made me hungry, so I'll see you guys later.

Hey guys! Long-time lurker, first time poster here.
I just watched the 2019 remake of "Child's Play."
Surprisingly, refreshingly, and most assuredly, this 2019 remake of the eponymous horror classic (directed by Lars Klevberg, the filmmaker behind the deplorable horror film "Polaroid") is not only perfectly acceptable, but honestly pretty good. A revisitation of narrative material that tries neither to completely replicate nor bastardize the original story in question, "Child's Play" offers just enough of the spirit and tone of the original without slavishly adhering to the exact story beats and offering nearly as many moments of fan-service that we've seen other remakes commit to as of late. Yes, some of the puppeteering and design work is suspect, but the kills, performances, and visuals? Shockingly enjoyable. This is a tight, well-realized horror thriller with a great personality and a ton of laughs. I honestly am stunned to say that I wouldn't mind seeing another.
7/10.

The controversial reputation is certainly deserved and I was in disbelief as to how it played out. The blackface is distracting as the characters don't look black at all but rather like dirty white people. It's even more striking with actual black people in the cast. It's still a very impressive movie loaded with terrific sequences. Having this and Intolerance come out in back to back years has to be one of the greatest achievements in film history for a director.

The scenes in "Midsommar" are on the same gore level as "Hannibal" (the tv show). NBC allowed them to really push the limits on that show.
The scene in Midsommar of the flayed man in the chicken coop is no different than Praying Angels (Blood Eagle) in the 5th episode of season 1

8/10.
This series is definitely lighter and more fun than the Tobey McGuire Spider-Man, though I haven't made up my mind yet if I like this series better.
I do find it a little too convenient that everyone close to Peter were part of The Blip, so they didn't age. You'd think if 50% of the world was Blipped that some of them would have aged 5 years. It might have been interesting to see how that would affect his relationship with a friend, for them to have aged 5 years and lived without Peter for that time...
Great cameo by J,K. Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson. He was born for that part.
The post-credits scene is worth waiting for. They chose a good song for the end credits too.

On the westerns list but I think it's more appropriate for the laughs list. The western aspect is just an excuse for Buster Keaton's comedic shenanigans. Either way I thought it was a great watch. It's only a little over an hour long and it moves by quick. It's quite entertaining.

I'll say it's better than Hereditary, which shows you how much I liked that movie given this rating. I bought into this one pretty well, but the last half hour took me out of it a bit. I understand some of the metaphors and real life comparisons, but it went off the deep end in an instance or two.
It's a bit artsy in terms of cinematography and such, so don't expect it to be an easy watch. However, there are some dots most people should be able to connect to consider it a good time once the credits roll.

From the Ebert list, this is one of the earliest epics and supposedly one of the most influential films. Costume drama is not my cup of tea but I have to give it it's due. Maybe because it's such an old movie everything seemed more authentic. The costumes and sets are terrific, and even the stunt work impressive. I wasn't completely immersed but it's a good movie and I liked it.

Fat City
(John Houston, 1972)
Gotta love the early 1970s for honest film dramas without pandering to the audience's emotions. That unique film making style would change after George Lucas's and Steven Spielberg's mega block busters hit the theaters in the later 1970s. But there was a time in the 70s when movie making was about something more than movies as amusement park rides...1972's Fat City by legendary John Houston is such a film.
Fat City is like a peak into the go-nowhere lives of people living hand-to-mouth and just trying to get through the day, while hoping for a better tomorrow. Tomorrow is fleeting and there's no grandiose mentor, no magic moments to lift these lost souls out of their doldrums. What we see isn't inspiring and it sure in the hell isn't uplifting, but it felt damn real.
A young Stacy Keach is perfectly cast as a has-been, small time boxer who goes through life where the currents take him. He's adrift without real direction. Susan Tyrrell is a 'train wreck of a bar fly' a juicer who's been drunk for years. Wholly crap! I believed she was an actual drunk and had degenerated into something that crawled out of the bottle and wants nothing more out of life than to stay at the bottom of that bottle.
Fat City was a Cannes Film Festival selection.

I saw the end of the film recently – not long after watching Line of Duty series 5, in which Stephen Graham appeared, though regrettably had no scenes with Vicky McClure. I could definitely see from that and This Is England why McClure called him a "powerhouse".

Low budget sci fi. Extremely nihilistic, bleak and in places quite shocking. Some performances better than others. It could be seen as a analogy of how we are doing irreversible damage to our planet, or a piece that shows how humans would behave given impending doom.
The limited budget does show in places, with most of the action taking place in everyday locations that are supposedly on board this spaceship that is taking passengers to Mars. And there's a clever technique of putting the film into another world, even though the technology used in the movie is a bit dubious. But pound for pound it is a very entertaining, thought provoking film.

Fighting With My Family 2019
A former wrestler and his family make a living performing at small venues around the UK while his kids dream of joining the WWE. Does a good job at feeling like a small working class British film and a "legit" American movie and turning stereotypes on their head.. with the likes of Dwayne Johnson (playing himself and producing) and Vince Vaughn. Based on the true story of WWE star Paige and written and directed by Stephen Merchant who has a minor comedic roll, I enjoyed it and had wet eyes by the end, quite a unique experience

I watched Midsommar last night. It was good: 8/10. It has, of course, a very Wicker Tree (a bit of Wicker Man, but a good bit more of Wicker Tree) kind of vibe to it, but it is more interesting since you are able to follow and see drastic changes in the protagonist which does not happen in either of the Wicker movies. Also, the cinematography is fantastic. The director who also did Hereditary was a unique visual style and tone. His transitions are quite different and sometimes seamless, sometimes jarring and sometimes both. The visuals while the kids are on drugs are truly freaky and interesting. I will purchase this on Blu-Ray or 4k.

Us (2019)
Ultimately, this feels like one of those sci-fi movies that throw a bunch of wacky, far-fetched notions at you, and expect you to think, "Wow, that's so cool/unsettling!" but doesn't bother explaining them. It's like Jordan Peele decided, "We're gonna go the Christopher Nolan route on this one, guys!" thinking that "ambiguity" and "hidden possibilities" can make a film a masterpiece. No, it won't, not if the filmmaker can't coherently line up all the plot points.
Now, it was entertaining and I had fun watching it, but like many viewers I was left disappointed. I'm fine with ridiculous storylines if the world of the film itself can make them seem plausible, but this one didn't.
I'm tired of new films and shows about identical doubles, especially when one is "evil." It's been a very popular theme over the past few years.
I'm also weary of the trope where there are mutant zombie-like characters. They aren't quite brain-dead cannibals but they are demented, monster people who just want to kill, torture or injure others for fun. You aren't sure if they're really "human" anymore (if they ever were) and you can't reason with them, so all you can do is try to protect yourself from their compulsively savage behavior. Typing that out, I realize it sounds like the villains in a lot of classic horrors, but you would have to watch this to get what I mean by suggesting Peele was borrowing from the "zombie" train.
It feels like Peele also tried to recycle some of the ideas he presented in Get Out (which was far superior, in my opinion), but looked around at contemporary pop culture and said, "What can we say here that could appeal to all the fans of these various genres?" Well, he definitely failed at impressing the vegans/vegetarians, haha... Not sure what rabbits are supposed to symbolize, although I bet lots of people have theories on that too...
I'm not saying that watching it was a negative experience. It had potential, but the film simply didn't make much sense. If you read people's comments you think, "Okay, so that would connnect some dots," but there's still too much that falls apart under scrutiny.
If you're curious because of the hype, watch it; however, if you are on the fence I would say you're not missing much if you skip it, or wait until it ends up on Netflix.

Blinded by the light (2019)
Let me preface this by saying I generally try to see positives in any film i watch and not all posts will be so negative, having said that I really did not like this.
Set in 1980s Luton (England) and telling the story of Javed, a Pakistani immigrant struggling with family issues and racism, who is inspired by the music of Bruce Springsteen to change his life for the better. Early scenes stop suddenly almost as if cut mid-sentence with the lines not given any time to breathe before moving to the next and the dialogue itself is often as subtle as a sledgehammer tied to a bulldozer (I actually laughed out loud a couple of times at how cliche some of the lines were).
There are a few musical numbers where characters burst into song which are so toe-curlingly bad I worried I would never be able to listen to Bruce again and songs are repeated more than in other recent films (Rocketman, Yesterday, Bohemian Rhapsody). Javed earnestly quotes lyrics at people who react as if he is some wise sage rather than an annoying teenager, although as a former annoying teenager myself, obsessed with Kurt Cobain, this did partly ring true. After around 90 minutes I thought things did pick up slightly, a genuinely funny moment and some real drama, but then it just would NOT end, rivaling Return of the king for number of endings.
Apologies again for the negativity, I genuinely wanted to like this film, hopefully future reviews will be more positive and cheerful.

Us (2019)
Ultimately, this feels like one of those sci-fi movies that throw a bunch of wacky, far-fetched notions at you, and expect you to think, "Wow, that's so cool/unsettling!" but doesn't bother explaining them.

I feel you're taking it too literally. The film is all about the USA. The current political climate. The current undertones of empowerment, and the rise of the right. The rise of the classes - being given a voice (Red was literally given a voice). The duality of people's real side is done brilliantly. It's a way, way better film than Get Out in my opinion.
