Performance (1970) 2.5
I thought it had it's moments, and I liked the attitude and the characters. It also helps that I love The Rolling Stones. On the flip side, I'm not that big into weird, and I generally like a more cohesive storyline.

(Paul Greengrass, 2013)

Incredibly intense. Emotionally captivating. Excellent performances. Superb direction. Great writing. Easily one of the best movies I've seen from last year. I was on the edge of my seat during the entire runtime. Tom Hanks gives one of the strongest performances of his career. With magnificent poise and confidence, he balances being a leader and a relatable everyman, running the gamut of emotions from beginning to end. He deserved an Oscar nomination for his performance. Rookie Barkhad Abdi is equally excellent--- no matter what he goes on to accomplish in his acting career, this will be the performance to which he'll forever be linked. Greengrass made the right decision to cast actual Somalians instead of familiar faces. If Don Cheadle or someone had been cast instead, the film would've lost much of its authenticity and realism. Surprisingly, I empathized with the pirates and their increasing sense of desperation, which is a testament to the strong writing and performances. Greengrass directs in a way that makes the audience feel as if we're right there with the characters. We feel what the characters feel, whether it's panic or adrenaline or claustrophobia. By the time the credits rolled, I felt as emotionally exhausted as Captain Phillips himself. Powerful stuff. Highly recommended.

The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) 5
A great adventure classic with the perfect amount of humor and romance. I can't believe this has eluded me all this time. Fun from start to finish, and filmed in brilliant technicolor, the closest comparison I can think of is Raiders of the Lost Ark. It's something I would recommend for people of all ages. Errol Flynn is perfect as Robin Hood with ton's of charisma; I can't picture anyone else in the role. The rest of the cast is perfect as well. After watching mostly dark or weird movies, I needed something like this.

I actually really enjoyed this movie, the visuals were great, the story was pretty good and the actors worked well together. It was a bit cliché especially the ending but overall it was a good movie. I would have loved to have seen it at the cinema.

great flick, Errol Flynn was my favorite actor early on in my film-viewing days. if you want to watch something else like this, try out Captain Blood (1935), it is Flynn's first starring role and DeHavilland is the co-star
i still think they have the best chemistry i've seen as far as a romance stories are concerned
i also read that at one point, Gone With the Wind (1939) was to star Errol Flynn as Rhett Butler and Olivia DeHavilland as Scarlett O'Hara... i still loved Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh in those roles, but in alternate universe-mode i'd have liked to see the Flynn and DeHavilland version of Gone With the Wind

I thought this was an interesting movie; pretty sick and even darkly funny at times. I don't usually like weird, but it was weird in a realistic way. It could've used a little more life at times, but it's a good flick.

I cherish that movie. Top 5 movies for me. I remember the first time I saw it I didn't think much of it, of course I was really young, but it has grown on me every time I've seen it since. I can quote the whole movie for you. Clooney is my man he has made some of my favorite movies and I always like a good Coens flick. If it was your first time watching it go back and revisit it in like a month. It will be better I promise. It was based of the Odyssey if you like Greek mythology.
If you don't give it a higher rating next time I attribute it to you being a FOP guy.

Monuments Men - 2014
Well since I was on my spill about a Clooney movie, the last movie I actually saw was a Clooney movie. When this was announced I had high high hopes for it. So much talent and my boy Clooney. Admittedly he has been so-so as a director. I've seen 3 movies he has directed this one, Leatherheads and Ides of March. Ides was decent and Leatherheads was the worst movie I've seen Clooney in, such a bore. Anyways my hopes for this were considerably lowered after they moved it from awards season into the abyss of the beginning of the year.
Clooney just never really finds the right tone in the movie. Not that it is a goofy movie but the tone of the movie just aided in me not being as emotionally attached to the characters as I should have been. The beginning of the movie felt rushed into as well. If he would have went grittier with the tone I think the movie would have faired much better. Now was it a totally bomb? No. I enjoyed it, who can't with these actors in it? You could watch them all paint for a whole movie and be entertained. I'd recommend it for a red box night then be done with it. Nothing that will leave a lasting impact to me. Also Cate Blanchett has the best performance in the whole movie but is only in it for 15 minutes. She kills it.
I would give it a 2.5/5

http://www.shmee.me/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/hansel_gretel_witch_hunters.jpg
Bought this DVD a while back and was fairly certain I would like it. The premise just seemed right up my alley. And I was not disappointed. It's just loads of fun, with action, humor, gore...all the makings of a good time. :)
Starring Jeremy Renner, Gemma Arterton, Famke Janssen, Peter Stormare, and a beauty I've never heard of, Pihla Viitala. The title tells all you need to get you to watch this (or not, if you don't like this sort of movie), but there are twists and added things to make the story very interesting, such as the various forms of witches in the film. I admit to laughing at most of the gore in the movie, whether it was meant to be funny or not...it's just that kind of movie. And having two of my favorite beauties, Gemma and Famke, in the movie is just sugar on top, Plus a new favorite, Pihla Viitala. A real fun time.

Decided to watch this because the concept sounded intriguing and I was wondering how they would do it in a way that was young adult friendly. Very fun movie that is to be taken lightly. Some strong acting especially from Jennifer Lawrence helps the movie a lot. Definitely became a follower of the movies after seeing this.

Hockey, with its fistfights and missing teeth, its constant momentum and its slams against the glass, is a tough, violent, blue-collar sport, and I think Slap Shot captures that spirit better than any other hockey film I've seen. (Not that I've seen too many. Miracle, Goon, and The Mighty Ducks movies are the only ones that come to mind.) Paul Newman is as effortlessly cool as always, and the movie contains some great scenes. It's very much a "guy's movie,"--- you can practically smell the farts and beer and jock straps--- and I enjoyed the camaraderie and the locker-room language. Overall, it's a solid, entertaining sports flick, but not quite as funny as some people make it out to be.

Back in 2004, when I watched the remake, I remember liking the concept even though the film itself kind of sucked. Unlike the remake, however, which tried to be a comedy, the original is much darker, more satirical, and overall just a much better movie. Small things, like a repeated phrase or a man sketching a woman, carry sinister undertones. The dread slowly builds until the big reveal and the ending is especially haunting. If I didn't already know the twist, then I'm sure it would've made more of an impact, but it's still creepy. The movie may no longer be as timely as it was in 1975, but I think there's still quite a few chauvinistic men out there who would gladly swap their real wife for a Stepford wife. My only complaint of the film is the overly languid pace. Ten-to-fifteen minutes could've easily been shaved from the runtime, resulting in a stronger viewing experience.

Cries and Whispers (1972) 4
Going into this movie, all I knew about it was the basic synopsis. Based on that synopsis, I was afraid that this would be a snoozefest. I give the director a lot of credit, for not only making an excellent movie, but for keeping it at 90 minutes long and not dragging it out. I may be off base a little, but I didn't feel like this was that far off from being a psychological horror film. I don't know if I'd have much of a desire to watch it again, and I don't know who I'd recommend it to. I did not find it to be at all pleasant, or entertaining, but I did find it to be extremely effective, and as a result, pretty great.

MANNEQUIN
(directed by Michael Gottlieb, 1987)
http://www.movieforums.com/community/attachment.php?attachmentid=14599&stc=1&d=1400103948
There's been a lot of filth spewed forth concerning the 1987 film, Mannequin, and I'm gonna clean all that crap up and get it straight and get this world balanced again.
People do not understand this movie. Worse, neurotic people holler that it's sexist and offensive and homophobic -- they are the ones who REALLY don't get Mannequin, and they are the worst because they've dragged this beautiful movie through their own dirty mud tracks.
Roger Ebert wrote an absolute BRAIN DEAD review for "Mannequin" (http://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/mannequin-1987) that I feel strongly proves that fat lunkhead was severely overrated as a movie reviewer and probably only did the job for free popcorn.
I've been a fan of this movie all of my life. I was probably three or four years old when I first saw it. I remember being enamored with the VHS of Mannequin when I'd see it on a shelf in a certain store. I had probably already seen the movie on television (I'm not positive) but I remember eventually getting that VHS and being very happy. Through the years, I watched it countless times. In 1991, at seven years of age, I jumped for joy when a TV spot for Mannequin: On The Move, the sequel to Mannequin, appeared on my television. The Saturday after the Friday it was released, my dad took me to the mall movie theater and we watched flamboyant, gay window dresser Hollywood Montrose do his thang again in Mannequin 2. Months later, I ordered it off pay-per-view and I set the VCR to tape it while I was in school. The cable went out during the day, ruining my attempt at recording Mannequin 2. It's a miracle I didn't have access to guns or I might have gone to school the next day and shot everybody due to my frustration and anger with what happened the day before.
Last night, I sat down and watched Mannequin again due to a big discussion of it recently in a thread here, started by the vile, confused Captain Spaulding. It's weird and spooky how this all played out because I had just had a dream about Mannequin days before. I swear I must have been predicting the future again through my dreams.
Interestingly, Mannequin also happens to be a movie that deals with mysticism and magic, the Gods, the creative force, the spirit of man. It is practically a religious movie, and watching it last night was like a religious experience.
http://www.movieforums.com/community/attachment.php?attachmentid=14600&stc=1&d=1400105654
The truth about Mannequin is that it's much more than a comedy. In fact, there's really not that many funny scenes (a big complaint from people about the film, I know) although I did find myself laughing at times -- surprisingly during moments I really didn't expect to laugh at, but I did because the moments just ... felt like "home" to me, I guess. I knew them well and enjoyed them. Some things were funnier to me just because the movie... felt kind of different to me.
Watching this movie last night, I worried I might be bored because I've seen the movie so many times before. What stunned me is how NOT bored I was. It almost felt NEW, although I knew every scene. It's really been some years since I've watched it all the way through -- I can't remember when the last time was. Not a LONG time ago, but... at least six years, maybe. I hadn't felt the urge to watch it much anymore. Partially, I think it's because even I have been sort of affected by the naysayers of Mannequin. Partially, it's because I've seen it so much that I can play it in my head anytime I wish to see that movie again, like how you can recite a song you know so well. Partially it's because I've wanted to explore new movies and didn't feel a need to return to Mannequin.
BUT NOW -- I have returned to Mannequin. I'm back there and GUESS WHAT?!
There's gold there.
http://www.movieforums.com/community/attachment.php?attachmentid=14601&stc=1&d=1400106691
Mannequin begins in Ancient Egypt. A young woman, Ema "Emmy" Heshire (Kim Cattrall) is hiding in a pyramid amongst some mummies, trying to avoid her mother. Her mother comes in and finds her. Emmy's mother wants to take Emmy and marry her away to some Egyptian guy who sells camel dung. Emmy doesn't love this guy or even really know him -- but it's Ancient Egypt and women are treated like cattle. They are given to men to serve as wives and they have no say in the matter. Emmy prays to the Gods to help her get out of this situation because she wants to be more independent and live her own life. She wants to basically live like a man -- she wants to INVENT THINGS. She wants to FLY. She has grand ambitions for her life, but unfortunately, her mother and the men of Ancient Egypt want to give Emmy only bondage and enslavement to other men.
After she prays to the Gods, the Gods LISTEN TO EMMY. And suddenly -- Emmy disappears from Ancient Egypt! Through an animated opening credits sequence (and later explained by Emmy in the movie), the Gods grant Emmy the power to live this life she wants. She ends up being a time traveler like Dr. Who or something, and she visits different time periods and she takes part in all sorts of adventures. She meets a lot of famous people, like Christopher Columbus and Michelangelo. Mannequin deals with Emmy's stop in 1980's Philadelphia, where she decides to meet Jonathan Switcher (Andrew McCarthy), a gifted artist leading a miserable life.
Now, really -- how does this sound sexist? How does a movie about a woman wanting independence and escaping male slavery sound sexist?
You know why people say Mannequin is sexist? I think I know -- nobody likes the fact that she's a wooden mannequin. People see a woman being portrayed as a wooden mannequin, being carried around and set up in window displays, and they idiotically think it's sexist. They pay NO ATTENTION to the other details of the movie. They make up bogus beliefs that they see fit for their own gross negligence.
http://www.movieforums.com/community/attachment.php?attachmentid=14602&stc=1&d=1400107569
Now, a moment ago, I said Mannequin isn't really that much of a comedy. If you're expecting non-stop laughs, forget it. If you find yourself laughing non-stop, fine. The thing is -- you wanna know what Mannequin is? IT'S A BIG GAY MOVIE. That's what it is. And that's probably a big reason, too, for why it's so devalued. There's something frightening about Mannequin to people. But look at this:
The movie's lead character is a very sensitive, soft man, played by Andrew McCarthy. His character, Jonathan Switcher, is like a gay man. The character isn't gay, but you could easily believe a person like him would be. When we meet Jonathan, he is getting fired from all kinds of jobs. The reason he gets fired is because he's so into art that he can't do complete assignments correctly. He doesn't do a job like a man -- GET R DUN! He takes his time. He works slow, like an artist, perfecting and perfecting and perfecting. Because of this, he pisses off the more macho bosses he always has, who want a job done fast. The first job we see him have is at a mannequin factory, where he builds the mannequin which will become Emmy. He feels it is his greatest work of art for some reason -- but he gets fired from the job because he took a long time making her. Later, drenched in the rain on his motorcycle, after being dejected by his girlfriend, Jonathan sees the mannequin in a window display. He runs up in the rain and talks to it, lovingly. Then he gets back on his motorcycle and rides off, telling the mannequin that he will see it again the next day. He's an artist IN LOVE WITH HIS WORK.
The next day, he goes back to the window display early in the morning to see his mannequin again. Estelle Getty, the boss of the store, arrives (after hitting a guy with a cab door -- another sign of this movie not being sexist since there's NON-STOP female power going on) and she strikes up a conversation with Jonathan. Stupid, careless construction men drop a heavy sign they're putting up in front of the building and it almost kills Estelle Getty (and Estelle Getty, by the way -- another sign of this movie's incredible gay friendliness -- since she's a Golden Girl and this movie actually feels very Golden Girls like) -- anyway, Estelle Getty is almost killed, but Jonathan saves her. Her pushes her out of the way and because of this, she gives him a job in the store.
He meets the turd of a vice president, Mr. Richards (James Spader), who puts him in charge of the women's lingerie inventory. But Jonathan is compelled to seek out his mannequin, finding it one of the window displays. While speaking fondly to it, he is caught by Hollywood Montrose (Meshach Taylor), a flamboyant gay window dresser who is filled with energy and style and pizzazz. And then later... Jonathan's mannequin comes to life. It is Emmy. She had decided to visit this time period and meet Jonathan. How, I don't know, but apparently she did.
Through Emmy, Jonathan finds faith in his abilities as an artist. He starts creating beautiful window displays with mannequins, which attract people to the store, which is just what the store needs because it's a failing business. Another department store, Illustra, which is nearby, and where Jonathan's bitchy former girlfriend works, wants to buy Jonathan's store, called Prince & Co., for 1/10th of the store's worth. But Jonathan appears like a magical saint and his window displays save the store and Estelle Getty's character couldn't be more thrilled. Eventually Mr. Richards is even fired and Jonathan becomes the vice president. But the evil people of Illustra want Jonathan for themselves, and when they discover that he's spending his nights talking and fooling around with a MANNEQUIN (Emmy turns back into a mannequin around other people -- only Jonathan can see her) -- all Illustra needs is some embarrassing photographic evidence of Jonathan with this mannequin to get him in their hands. IF that will work....

Mannequin.
There's SO MUCH MORE I could say, but I'm getting tired of writing this.
Sexist and offensive? Not at all. I haven't explained all the reasons, but I can explain in more posts. I did some already with Captain Spaulding, but I've noticed new things after watching the movie.
Mannequin is an original. One of the greatest movies ever. Very inspiring and uplifting if you can stop living in a pig pen for awhile. I encourage everybody to see it and open their eyes and hearts to it. It's outrageous how so many people -- so many KNOW NOTHINGS -- have vilified this movie. May the Gods do away with these people and get more people to appreciate Mannequin for the real movie it is. For so long, it's been trashed and accused of all kinds of hideous charges for which it is guilty of NONE.
Get this f**king movie right now and watch it.

This movie sucked! SUCKED! Schrader might of made some great movies back in the day, but this is not one of them. And Bret "American Psycho" Easton Ellis supposedly wrote this? This script is so bad and halfhearted I think he did it because he was behind on the rent. And the acting? What acting? Lohan can't act and is barely being out acted by a guy who does porn for a living. Yeah... THAT BAD!
Okay so the movie revolves around an affair Lohan's character is having with some generic dude while she is dating a generic spoiled brat trust fund douche played by porn star James Deen. For some damn reason generic dude and the porn star are both obsessed with Lohan's character. Why? I have no idea. She is bland and uninteresting, and whose defining characteristic is she looks good in yoga pants. Generic dude is in love with her. Why? I have no idea, bad taste I guess. Douche is obsessed with her and is furious she is cheating on him. Why? I have even less of a clue. Especially when he invites other men, women, and couples to bed with him and Lohan. HE HAS ZERO REASONS TO BE JEALOUS! This is not Jake Lamotta who was a rage filled sexually jealous animal who was his own unique character. This is a dime a dozen rich trust fund baby played by a far far inferior actor to De Niro with a very poorly written character.
To top it off, having very few sympathetic or even likable characters, and more then a few needless subplots and there is a reason this movie had the reputation it did. The few shots that looked like they were taken from Taxi Driver were nice, but only reminded me I could be watching a FAR superior movie from a time when Paul Schrader was involved with great movies. It seems like this movie was made just to get Lohan topless in the flick. But having read up about the movie has me remember that whenever Lohan was nude in front of the camera, Schrader was nude BEHIND the camera. Kinda kills it for me. Plus, Lohan is not that attractive. Pam Grier or Rosario Dawson she is not. Half the movie I was screaming "why is all this being done in pursuit OF LINDSEY LOHAN?!?!?!?!?" I mean really?
If this was anymore incompetently written and acted we would be entering The Room territory. At least the camera work is good. Save yourself 99 minutes and pass on this movie.

Just looking at the poster there and the credits. Does that say this film stars James Deen?
EDIT - Just checked on imdb and James Deen does indeed exist and what a prolific actor he is. He has starred in over 1000 films, though I don't think I've heard of any of them - Prime MILF, Squirt Gasms 2!, Screaming AssGasms, Game of Bones: Winter is Cumming..................

I am working on a long review over all of the Full Moon Pictures movie now, but I forgot to tell all of you that I watched this. It's a spin-off that happened either after Subspecies 2 or 3, I can't remember, but I have to say, I think it's a massive improvement over the first two. Full Moon's movies usually don't have much quality to them. I watch them for a reason that I have yet to uncover, but this one wasn't too bad. I actually kind-of liked it. Probably the best film that I've seen from Full Moon so far.

Looking for Mr. Goodbar (1977) 3*
This is a tough one to rate because I'm a big fan of movies like this. I love the era, style, and music, and this movie reeks of the 70's. Diane Keaton is very good as a promiscuous young woman cruising the bars for one night stands. A young Richard Gere is well cast as one of her conquests. I just felt that not quite enough happened in this 2 hour and 10 minute movie. The fact that she's a first grade teacher is a very nice touch, but do we really need that many scenes of her in the classroom? We also have the necessary interaction with her family, but that doesn't really lead anywhere. It sounds shallow, but I needed more of her in the bar scene; that's when the movie had a spark. I do think it was a pretty realistic movie, and that was an absolute must. Another important factor that it gets right is that it has a dark tone. I would probably say that it's a decent cautionary tale for young women. Although a disappointment, I enjoyed it because it suits my tastes very well, and it has a memorable ending. That doesn't mean I'd recommend it to someone else.

Despite the movie's gloss and sheen, it feels very amateurish. Tonally, it's all over the damn place. I think the movie tries on about fifteen different hats during the course of its runtime: drama; comedy; romance; action; crime; magical realism; coming-of-age. Not even the magnetic Mads Mikkelson was able to save the film. A waste of time.

Spielberg is arguably the most popular and beloved director of all time. I don't deny his greatness, but I'm not a fan. If I made a list of 100 Favorite Movies, for example, none of his films would make the cut. (And even if I expanded that list to include 200, the only film that might make an appearance is Saving Private Ryan, and even that's doubtful.) However, I've never seen a Spielberg film that is this bad or this messy. 1941 starts off with a parody/homage of the opening scene of Jaws, except, instead of a shark, we get a Japanese submarine. It's easily the best scene of the movie. The rest of the movie is a painfully unfunny, unfocused, screwball-style comedy that becomes increasingly irritating and annoying the longer it drags. The star-studded cast goes to waste. For a PG-rated movie, there was a surprising amount of sexual innuendo. (Not that I'm complaining.) My rating might be just a tad harsh, but I couldn't wait for this crap to end.

I've only seen Jaws once, and although I think it's a great movie, I don't have any particular love for it. I'm very worried that it will win the 70's Countdown, which will disappoint me greatly. I like several of Spielberg's films--- Saving Private Ryan, Jurassic Park, Minority Report, etc.--- but I've never fallen in love with any of his films. I think he too often plays it safe because he's a commercial director trying to appeal to the masses, and his insistence on sentimentality annoys me.

Of all of Wes Anderson's movies, I think this takes the cake for being his most whimsical. Overwhelmingly filled with a childlike feel to the narrative, headed by fantastic child actors, plus a strong adult cast makes this one of Anderson's best films easily. An excellent story of childhood love with all the usual quirks of a Wes Anderson film. And though I will still say The Grand Budapest Hotel is my personal favorite Wes Anderson movie this is definitely my second favorite of his films. I can't recommend it enough.

Man, It was not very good at all. I don't know how this thing is getting such great reviews. First off the characters were so thinly written it was almost embarrassing. I believe they are all good actors but the story just did them no favors. I know going into a Godzilla movie not to anticipate great character development but damn.
The other monsters were in it more then Godzilla, the story was just all over the place and pointless characters too. Ken Watanabe's character made the same freaking face in every scene, it was comical. Way way too many convenient moments too, that is a big pet peeve of mine in movies. The main character was always in the right spot at the right time yuck. One positive was some of the shots of Godzilla were really really neat thou.
I guess my biggest problem with the movie is it tried to take itself too seriously and it was just too silly to do that. I think why I enjoyed Pacific Rim so much compared to this is it didn't take itself nearly as serious. It knew what it was, a badass robots vs aliens movie so the focus was that. I can forgive some of the story and character flaws in it because the movie knew what it was. It didn't try to feel plausible, like Godzilla did.
Now with all that being said if you were a fan of the character Godzilla before heading into this you would probably enjoy it a lot more. Felt like more of an ode to the Japaneses Godzilla, they kinda give it heart to the monster. But I thought it sucked ha.

MANNEQUIN (1987)
as i pressed play, and the movie began, i couldn't help laughing out loud at this movie. but not in a bad way, in a good way. it was cracking me up. all at once as i watched, mainly early on, i heard SexyC's starship song ringing in my head from the 80's countdown, and his asian gongs, and the scenes were happening. and all of this was happening in a flash all at once as i watched. and it was hysterical. but as it continued, something happened. i was gripped by the story. periodically i'd still laugh out loud at stuff. like the way the characters carry around the mannequins. it's hard to explain. some people may watch the movie and get no laughs. i laughed out loud for like half the dang runtime. i'm still laughing right now as i'm typing
but i agree with Sexy, i don't think there's anything offensive about this movie. the movie starts out with 'a really long time ago.. in edfu, egypt... before lunch' or something like that, for goodness sake. i mean i don't understand how people could see that and then take what follows so seriously as to be offended by it
anyways, i liked it. and i don't think it matters what your sexual orientation is or anything like that. i don't think that affects the movie experience much
it was an absurdly entertaining story. and suspenseful. and weird. but i like weird. i guess if some people hated it i won't really argue with that. but i am kinda surprised it's rated so badly in places. like 22% by the rotten tomato critics, 55% by the rotten tomatoes audience. not that that stuff matters all that much, but it kinda makes me think that some people may have watched it with big ole sticks lodged up their rears or something. or maybe not, maybe people have legitimate reasons for hating it, i don't know
but i really did like it. i don't know exactly what to rate it. this is the kind of movie that keeps movie watching hilarious and interesting for me. bc sometimes watching the supposed masterpieces of cinema gets boring

Whether you like it or not is another thing (and I can understand people who don't like any of his stuff, I'm not a big fan myself) but it'll always be cinematic and it'll always be up there on the screen.

Le Boucher (1970) 3
It took me an hour to pick up on what this movie is about, and I could still be wrong. For the first hour, I thought a lot of the scenes were drawn out and I couldn't figure out why the hot teacher was showing this dork any attention. I also thought it lacked tension for a movie about a string of murders. But then I suddenly got the thought that the movie really isn't about the murders at all. I came to the conclusion that the movie was about two individuals who were both lacking and needing something in life, and that's what brought them together. It's a theme I really like, and a central theme in some favorites of mine like The Wrestler and Leaving Las Vegas. I didn't enjoy the movie a huge amount, but after reflecting for a few minutes, I have to say I think it was a very good movie. I just wish I would've picked up on it sooner. I really liked the atmosphere and score.

I wrote a long review about it. If you want to read it. I have it in my link in my signature. If not, I'll just basically summarize my thoughts: (I'll post it on my review thread later as well.)
The movie had a capable cast and a capable director, (I liked his movie, Monster) but it didn't at all live up to my expectations. I went into this movie wanting to love it, but the characters were incredibly generic, and they didn't give enough time to the monsters at all. It's funny, Bryan Cranston actually had me more entertained than even the monsters did, but they basically shifted it away from him after thirty or so minutes.
I feel like every time that the monsters really got going, they went back to the human-characters and ruined it. I hope other people get more out of it than I did.

(Starring: Casey Affleck; Rooney Mara; Ben Foster; Keith Carradine)

A lovely, lyrical debut by first-time director David Lowery. Kind of like a modern-day Bonnie & Clyde by way of Terrence Malick. (In fact, it reminded me quite a bit of Malick's own debut feature, Badlands, which is a good thing, in my opinion, since that was before Malick crawled up in his own ass and thought he saw the meaning of life inscribed on his colon.) Ain't Them Bodies Saints is gorgeously shot. Numerous scenes could be framed and put on your wall. Rooney Mara has impressed me in every film in which she's appeared. This delicate, earthy, subtle performances might be her best yet. (Let's forget that she starred in the atrocious Nightmare on Elm Street remake.) The narrative takes a poetic approach, lingering on landscapes and often lit by a waning sunset. Dialogue is kept to a minimum, but when the characters do speak, the words slice through you like a bullet. The story is tragic and the ending is sad, but this is a tale of star-crossed lovers, so the outcome should come as no surprise. (After all, outlaws don't tend to fade into the sunset; they burn in it, instead.)

For some, Ain't Them Bodies Saints might feel a bit slight, much like the breeze that rustles the wheat in those gorgeously photographed scenes. For me, however, Ain't Them Bodies Saints is one of the most pleasant surprises of 2013: a moody, beautiful, romantic work of art that wouldn't have felt out of place among similar films of the 70's.

Thanks. It's not a movie for everyone, but I think a lot of people on this forum would appreciate it. Others might find that it's a little too slow or that not enough happens.
I loved it, personally, and I wanted to give it a higher rating, but I'm not sure if it's a movie that will really stick with me in the long haul. My only complaint, which I didn't mention in my write-up, is the ending. It felt too abrupt to me, but maybe that's because I was so emotionally invested in the characters and the story by that point that I just wasn't ready for it to end.

As a schizophrenic myself, I like to believe he actually suffered from the illness.

My interpretation is that
he's definitely ill and what happens at the end is basically the whole movie is summed up. If you noticed his wife's behavior during the rest of the film, then the final sequence will make perfect sense. It is no different from the rest of the movie.

I really have no desire to see this other then Miles. He is from a small county in Florida and went to our rival high school, graduated the same year as me. Only 3 public high schools and 1 private one in the county. I know a gang load of people who know him, one of my childhood friends is out in LA with him. Probably met him when I was younger and didn't realize it. He comes home like 4 times a year or something. Hoping to run into him and congratulate him on his success. My buddy that's out there with him was telling me months ago he was going get the fantastic 4 role, kinda cool to know that before everyone ha. Anyways I am really pulling for him, he is about to blow up big time.

I'm surprised at the way i've seen this rated here in the past, because it seemed most either thought it was average or disliked it. Anyway i loved it, it's now my favourite Woody Allen movie. I thought it was a great decision to shoot it in black and white, as it suited the rainy Manhattan landscape as well as some of the tones he was trying to set in the film completely.

From the top 100 laughs list, this movie was way more entertaining and funny than I expected. I thought the cast featuring Warren Beatty, Julie Christie, Goldie Hawn, Jack Ward, and Lee Grant were all perfect. With only a 6.3 rating on IMDb, it would appear that I enjoyed this movie more than most. I just really seem to identify with the movies of the director, Hal Ashby. This is the 4th 70's film of his that I have loved after Coming Home, The Last Detail, and Harold and Maude. I look forward to watching Being There in the coming days.

I was afraid going in that this film was award it's Palme d'Or by film snobs that somehow thought explicitness translated into it being artsy. Also since the most recent Palme d'Or winner I saw was Tree of Life (which sucked) I was afraid the jury had lost their minds in recent years. But no this was a very good film and well deserving of the awards it got.

I think a lot of people make too big a deal of it's explicitness. It makes up less than 5% of the film... people should give more attention to it being a very compelling drama with fantastic performances, in my opinion.

My concern was not it's explicitness (I am not a prude), but that this would be overhyped because of it. I was happy it was not.

Wow, spot on
Watched 2001 Space Odyssey for the first time. Easiest 5/5 I have ever given. My instant favorite film. It does things and goes places that I haven't seen before. It's the movie I have been waiting for and the one I've been trying to conceptualize. It breaks a barrier.
I've recently watched the Shinning(X3) and Clockwork Orange. I love them both, particularly Clockwork Orange, but this was far beyond anything I've seen from cinema. And it may be the best experience I have had from any piece of art.

I've only seen it once and I wasn't impressed - largely due to some terrible acting by the children and some really silly parts of the story.
Having said that, I think it was probably much better than I gave it credit for - I just need to get past those issues. What is interesting is that it's very memorable - I still remember much of it whereas I watched Rambo about three days ago and remember nothing ;)
I'm planning on watching it again soon and I feel like, with a different mindset, I'll enjoy it more.

Pacific Rim (2013) 2
My big problem with this was that the action scenes were not clear. The big fight scenes at night, in the water, just looked like a jumbled mess to me, and they should look a little more realistic. Movies like Independence Day, Titanic, Jurassic Park, and King Kong(2005) may have their faults, but there's parts when I just say, wow, that was awesome. I didn't get that here. With a movie like this, I don't care about the story or the script, just give me some cheap thrills.

I will start off by saying I have not seen the 1934 version which I think more people enjoy also I have not read the book. Overall I like this movie and thought it was directed well, it is hard to fit in a 1200 page book into a 90 minute book and from what I have read gave the viewer the important parts. Jim Caviezel and Guy Pearce play their parts well and I really like Richard Harris in this (I think this was his final role before he passed away). I liked the adventure of the movie in the first half but did find the second half too crammed and seemed like I was watching fast motion. Everything was basically over in 30 minutes.

I at least give it credit for having a good amount of action, whereas I'm hearing complaints of not enough Godzilla in that new movie. I thought the trailer for Pacific Rim showed the action as a little muddled too, but I was hoping I'd see it differently during the actual movie. FREDDY VS JASON (2003)
fun opening, with Robert Englund giving the backstory to Freddy. and also the premise of Freddy being forgotten. parts of it were really entertaining. other parts, well, they probly could've been done better.
but it's freddy vs jason ! what do ya expect
liked this scene:

Black Christmas (1974) *rewatch
Easily one of the best 'slasher' movies that ive seen. Im surprised its not talked about more. - rating_3_5+
i'd bet the only reason it's not talked about more is bc it doesn't have the iconic masked killer ie Halloween, Elm Street, Jason, Scream, etc
agree that it's easily among the best slashers anyways.
love this movie

Nice clip, nostromo...I've only seen the very ending of Freddy vs. Jason and now I must watch the whole thing. I'd seen Jason X and no matter it's detractors, I found it to be fun. Isn't Freddy vs. Jason the direct follow-up to Jason X? I've seen pretty much all the Freddy movies, but I seriously need to catch up on the Jason flicks. I think I stopped after #4, then watched #10, so I need to see the in-betweeners.

I watched a couple of movies at a friend's house yesterday. It was really nice. He hooked up his projector and we just went outside and pointed at the wall. Stayed out there until like one or two in the morning. Good stuff!

We celebrated with two exciting movies from Charles Bands' Full Moon Features!
If you know anything about Full Moon, you know what to expect, this was just mindless fun, that is, oftentimes, a so-bad it's good feeling. That's what the first one had, it was so blissfully entertaining with its outlandishness and offensive characters. It's probably one of my favorite movies from the company, whereas the second one was just so-bad in a boring kind-of way. Probably one of my least favorite from the company.

Being There (1979) 3
I thought this was a pretty great all around movie. I just didn't totally love it I think because I didn't relate to any of the characters or situations. I enjoyed it about as much as Harold and Maude, but I prefer some of the director's other work. Nothing for me to complain about though.

Boogie Nights is trash. I'm lowering my score of the movie to 2 and I'll be getting rid of my DVD. I've done some thinking and I've decided the movie does nothing for me.
The funny thing is the gay character -- played by Philip Seymour Hoffman -- is much more ridiculous and offensive than Mannequin's Hollywood Montrose, since PSH's Scotty character acts like he's mentally retarded or something -- and has no sex life, no partner, no nothing. He just flounders along acting stupid.
Disgusting movie. Overlong, overrated, bloated, boring, obsolete. A piece of nasty, old meat slathered and smothered with '70s and '80s disco and rock music to make it appear edible. Only dull kiss-asses would praise that thing.

Loved it, it will be on my 70's list and i urge anyone who hasn't to watch it. Great performances from both of the O'Neals, and Tatum was adorable :) . After watching it i googled Tatum to see if she was in anything else that would interest me. I was saddened to hear of her heroin and crack addictions and problems with her father as she seemed like a genuine talent.

Whilst I understand what you're saying and, as you know, the character annoys me a lot and he's an idiot, etc, the point is he's a closeted gay man working in mainstream porn because, as with the rest of them, they're the only family he has. Or, more to the point, the only family that'll have him.

Masterpiece! 10/10
Italo: A normal man? For me, a normal man is one who turns his head to see a beautiful woman's bottom. The point is not just to turn your head. There are five or six reasons. And he is glad to find people who are like him, his equals. That's why he likes crowded beaches, football, the bar downtown...
Marcello: At Piazza Venice.
Italo: He likes people similar to himself and does not trust those who are different. That's why a normal man is a true brother, a true citizen, a true patriot...
Marcello: A true fascist.

Well he is a fantastic director. He was called the next Martin Scorsese by the man himself.
Yeah, Scorsese predicted Wes Anderson's succes from the moment he saw Bottle Rocket. He absolutely adored that film.
I personally appreciate Wes Anderson's cinema a lot. I think he's one of the most fascinating directors of our times.
He's not on the same level of PTA for me, but Wes is just getting better and better lately (his ambitions are also getting higher and higher). I still recognize him as a very high quality director and it will be interesting to see which director of that "late '90s generation" will ultimately be considered the 'greatest'.

@Swan: I agree. Stylistically they're very different actually. I think Scorsese just made that statement after he saw Bottle Rocket. He seemed genuinely in love with that film back in the '90s. Today I also hear him mentioning PTA a lot in interviews, so I don't think he has a personal favorite. He appreciates both Andersons.

I still have those issues with it, but I am liking the whole phenomenon of The Wolf of Wall Street more. Obviously something drove me to the book and now that I see that the book is so surprisingly good... well... I'm swept away by good writing. You have power if you can get me to keep turning the pages of your book. I salute you. I'll forget about the moral issues if I like what you're saying.

Yeah I am pretty sure he made that comment in the early days of Wes' career. Although I love the way both directors move the camera.

IDK, I liked Boogie Nights enough, but to be honest I am just not into PT Anderson. I much prefer Wes Anderson.
Boogie Nights is good, but neither of them make films that interest me enough to go and watch them. That said, I'm tempted by The Grand Budapest Hotel.

I love the movie. Give it a shot.

I felt like HK about Wes Anderson but decided to go see it (mainly because nothing else was on except superhero movies) and really enjoyed it. I'd recommend it too.

Little Miss Sunshine 8/10
A Serbian Film - 0/10
An all-around ****** film. I'd heard reviews online talking about how disturbing it is so I decided to watch it the other day just to satisfy my curiosity. (I'm not a big horror film buff myself, but most of the so-called "horror films" I see I just don't find that scary, since the emphasis is usually just on over-the-top gore versus an actually scary setting - so I was hoping this film would do the trick).
Unfortunately this film almost makes the Michael Bay Friday the 13th and Halloween films look like art in comparison. For one thing there's very little violence, it's just chock full of scenes of sex and nudity which are no more scary or disturbing than a low budget porn film you could find on Google. It's only claim to fame are a few scenes depicting child rape (but even these weren't that "scary" - just gross and unsettling).
Other than that there's not much to say about this film - the plot makes no sense, it tries to make up for the lack of any legitimate "scares" by just tossing in a bunch of stupid sex and nude scenes; and even including a child rape theme isn't enough to make this film scary so much as mind-numbingly stupid. - I'd like to send the director a bill for 90 minutes of my life, and for a few of my brain cells.
OK then. You may not be von Trier.

B-
A bit long and repetitive for what is essentially a thriller albeit with an underlying moral question superficially examined. Spielberg can't make a bad movie I suppose and the screenplay didn't help matters but this is far from his best. Could've used a lot more Geoffrey Rush.

Robocop 2014
The biggest problem with the film is it's not the original. People have said to me and did say to me when the film originally came out that I need to get over myself on this and not to think of it is a remake but as a re-imagining and so far I am able to do that but I know when I walk away away from it all I am going think is "yeah, but it is not as good".
I like the idea and I like that they are trying to make him more human and detect emotion, that this alters his work ethic and how he does things but I see none of the humour, none of the reason to root for him and none of what made me jump out of my seat that I saw in the original, it is simply for me, mediocre.

Stallone wrote the screenplay to this 80's throwback action movie starring our modern day Stallone, Jason Statham.
The action scenes were pretty cool, but that's all it had going for it.
James Franco was miscast as the antagonist. Winona Ryder had no business being in this. The story was boring and predictable, even at 80's throwback B-movie standards.

I like James Franco, but I end up thinking he's miscast in just about everything I see him in lately.

I can't think of him as anything but who he played in Pineapple Express.

I really enjoyed Franco in Milk and, of course, Springbreakers. I think he's a capable actor, he just doesn't seem to be very adept at choosing good roles. Or maybe he's just not fortunate enough to be offered them.

I was going to say that exact same thing. He seems a little nutty and that he'll take any role. I can't imagine any other A-list actor taking a role on a soap opera. Plenty of actors get their start on them but he is the only one I know of that did one after they became famous.
