The nice guys (2016)
A budy cop type movie. Strong and genuinely funny first half. Has a dash of intrigue, drama and comedy lead by the two charasmatic leads. Funny comedy! Not that fast talking, loud, observation type babble a poster on this site recently made a thread about. This comedy is at times subtle, softly spoken and edgy.
The second half really delves into just comedy....to its detriment. Imagine if the original classic lethal weapon forgot its dramatic and action roots half way through and became somewhat of a slapstick jumble of happenings...much like the lethal weapon sequels.
It should have stuck to being more than a comedy. It should have taken itself more seriously but maybe the plot and plot holes would have made than impossible.
I did enjoy my time but I feel like the leads were wasted. A good time, worth a watch, not a classic and more of a could have been than a been.

VERY much appreciated! Always enjoyed your posts and very cool to see you again. Another grand sign that summer is here ;)
As I mentioned, my mentions don't work, so I missed you. I maybe wouldn't have seen it at all if I didn't figure out a way to see them afterall. Yoda, you have one less worry in your life now. ;)
You're welcome. :) And thanks. :) Yeah, us two have one more thing in common - we were both born in summer. Summer is the best. :)
Unbelievbable coincidence, as this was gonna be my next in "what are you listening". Well, maybe not. Afterall summer is here.

I've been off this site a while so I'm just gonna rate the last few films I went to the theater to see.

Star Wars: the Last Jedi (2017) 2
Wish this was the LAST Star Wars film. So many plot holes, forced plot points and such a waste of a very talented cast. Mary Sue is still very much a Mary Sue with no struggle to get to where she eventually gets to in end of film and there is no explanation for how she is so amazing at everything other than "Just deal with it she's the new lead of this franchise". So many uncompelling characters and the few compelling characters are wasted in the end. *cough*Andy*cough*Serkis. Also would like to add idk who this old hermit was that they had Mark Hamill portray in this film but that wasn't Luke Skywalker. *rant ended* I could rant about this film all day but I will stop for now. Can't wait to watch the other apparent train wreck that is Solo.

A Quiet Place (2018) 4
One of the best horror films I've seen in a quite a while. Whole cast was great.

Black Panther (2018) 2.5
Saw it twice (only because I was forced to go again with this girl and a group of her friends the second time) and liked it even less on the second viewing. Easily one of my least favorite marvel stand alone films. Michael B. Jordan and Andy Serkis were great villains wasted against Black Panther who is easily just as boring a character as Captain America.

Avengers: Infinity War (2018) 3.5
Easily the best Marvel film I've seen in years. The whole cast was great and Thanos was actually a decent villain.

I Spit on Your Grave (1978) (Dir. Meir Zarchi) 3
https://i.imgur.com/Nm1BhqV.jpg?1
A lot of it is really stupid, particularly how the inciting attacks are staged separately, but between the odd decisions and bad acting there are a handful of powerful images/sequences. The silent journey back home after the inciting incident as well as the shower after the traumatic experience are both unmistakably artful. Our avenger's musical respite after the bath tub slashing is angelic. These moments in particular almost definitely planted the seed for Ms. 45 to arrive a few short years later.
Of course Abel Ferrara improves on the idea in every way imaginable, but I Spit on Your Grave is definitely more watchable than Wes Craven's nearly incomprehensible The Last House on the Left. Where most would be turned away from the rape scenes, I'd argue they're rightly disgusting and hard to watch. Perhaps the most disagreeable scene is when the lead antagonist seems to momentarily persuade our broken avenger with arguments that she brought the attack upon herself. Thankfully, this argument is not entertained for very long.
Seeing Jennifer Hills evolve from a naive out-of-towner into a cold blooded harpy turns into a cathartic, somewhat cartoonish experience by the very end. It's a keystone exploitation film, but unlike something vaguely similar such as Coffy, a heroin undertaking revenge by using her sexuality as a lure, it edges much closer to the realm of horror which makes it all the more intriguing to somebody like me.
I Spit on Your Grave (2010) (Dir. Steven R. Monroe) 3
https://i.imgur.com/FKpELEU.jpg
A ballsy re-imagining of Meri Zarchi's seminal rape revenge flick which drives the story deeper into horror territory, strongly embracing the more fantastic elements of the original. In this reboot, once Jennifer Hills is assaulted, she takes to the shadows, haunting those who did her wrong. Utilizing her character in this fashion, as a borderline supernatural slasher villain for a significant stretch, makes a lot more sense than the immediate transition Hills makes in the original. That evolution taking place off screen makes it more digestible. In this iteration, the realism it has to skirt to tell the story works for the atmosphere instead of against the immersion.
Some other significant improvements made here include the emphasis on the power dynamics of rape, the Cronenbergian marriage of sex and violence visualized by incorporating firearms into the attack, as well as indictment of the artist by way of the character who tapes the violence suffering the same fate as those commiting it. On the last point, while the film critiques empty depravity, it reclaims brutal filmmaking when the victim assumes control of the camera and documents her revenge.
Steven Monroe's go at this iconic property definitely blazes its own trail and doesn't rely on the source material beyond a foundation. Though they share narratives and characters, they diverge greatly in tone and purpose as films made in different eras about an ever-evolving issue should. Despite what it gets right, I Spit on Your Grave (2010) drags its feet a little more than the original and somehow ends up more convoluted despite somehow being both more grounded and outlandish in certain regards. It isn't all that much "better" overall despite how interesting its different aims and styles are. It's not as important a movie in building your cinematic lexicon, but that isn't its fault.
I recommend both to those interested in brutal cinema. This one certainly approaches the bar set by foreign entries into the subgenre such as the various French Extremity pictures and South Korean revenge thrillers that appeared throughout the aughts.

Can Charlotte Gainsboroug tell any jokes or do impressions? Acting aint her bag. Decent little movie that Jim Carrey excels in. Pretty flat to represent the Polish authorities of the time I guess,
Chapeau again to Charlotte, the only "actress" that made me give up on von Trier.
5/10
Really? She's one of the greatest actresses alive in my opinion. Brave, uncompromising and totally engaging on screen.

This is probably the most serious Troma film I've seen, and only the second one I've really liked besides The Toxic Avenger. A Vietnam veteran who was captured and tortured returns home to complete squalor. The wife is on his ass, he's got a deformed baby, and another on the way. Everyone he knows is a degenerate and he'll only be able to take it for so long. It's a very ugly movie with a surprisingly decent lead performance.

I own the DVD. Only watched it once, years ago but its a difficult one to forget. Especially that ending

I Walk Alone (1947) is more than just the first of seven films that Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas would star in together; it's the cinematic death roar of the explosive Cagney-esque tommy gun wielding gangsters of the 20s/30s, contrasted to the "legit", calculating, syndicate gangsters of the noir period.

I liked Deadpool (2016), so to keep with the tradition of comic book movie sequels (looking at you MCU), I was expecting and received more of the same with Deadpool 2 (2018). But unlike Deadpool's MCU counterparts, Deadpool's meta self-awareness never gets stale. The X-force bit was hilarious, I really enjoyed Josh Brolin as Cable, and the whole movie is worth sitting through for a really well timed Green Lantern (2011) joke. Though it could be unexpectedly sweet at times, you know what you're getting with Deadpool 2.

Thsnks, Marco. :) I wasn't even aware it existed. But so cool it does. Maybe I'll even buy it one day, but you know what a problem money is.
No probs Beatle, the extras disc is superb. I went looking for it there to remember that I lent it to a mate who now lives ~100 miles away ha ha ha!! Available used on Amazon for around 6 quid though so not a biggie.
Really? She's one of the greatest actresses alive in my opinion. Brave, uncompromising and totally engaging on screen.
There we go, vive la difference. i find her incredibly annoying. Voice, mannerisms the lot. No offence ScarletLion.

X-Men Wolverine: Origins. Fairly mediocre Wolverine movie. Started well but got increasingly meh, with many ludicrously unconvincing CGI action scenes (they couldn't even be bothered to give him convincing looking razors this time - so fake! Grin). It was also impossible to take the Deadpool stuff seriously, esp after Deadpool 2!

Her initials were magical, signifying the ultimate French sex kitten. She's perfect head to toe, and in any other possible way.
I've been long meaning to see this since it's such a famous movie. It's very French. I love it. It's got a jazzy atmosphere, that lovely St. Tropez, but overall the underlying theme suggested by the title.
That woman was created to destroy men.
It's got quick wit in phrases or dialogues throughout the movie. But overall, when it's finished, it leaves you second guessing it. Is it just a superficial little movie, far from some heavy melodrama? Or is there something you missed? And I think that's the ultimate point. Roger wanted you to second guess it. Even wilder, you wonder if he himself knows the answer.

I was listening to a Lynne Ramsey podcast yesterday and she said that the bit where Phoenix punches the drug dealer was totally unscripted and unrehearsed. The drug dealer was an extra and was just as surprised as the rest of the crew. :D:D

Interesting clown face they've used. It's also like an inverted, theatrical blackface.

211 (York Shackleton, 2018) :Writer-director York Shackleton did quite a good job at meshing the drama and intensity of the film revolving around a standoff between police and a group of ex-military turned bank robbers with Bulgaria doubling for the American small town of Chesterford, MA (I was convinced let's put it that way). I interviewed Shackleton (https://worldfilmgeek.com/2018/06/05/bringing-the-211-an-interview-with-writer-director-york-shackleton/) about the film and it is safe to say I would recommend this to anyone who wants both a good low-budget action film meshed with intense drama.

I didnt know her art before I watched the movie. I have to admit I am amazed with hers pics. I think its really hard to make interesting pictures of people. I mean random strangers (not your and your family, which are interesting only because portray lifes of people who you love). I have this theory Vivian wanted to be closer with other human, but she wasnt able. The only way to do this was making pic. She took a pic a of a couple - only their hands holding each other. It's very simple but very intense.

I got to catch a lot of her stuff early on since my former roommate and I both work as photographers. He actually bought a Hasselblad camera to be more like Vivian Maier ha.
As far as the legal battle goes, from what I know (and I could be very very wrong), I lean more toward non-commercialized publication. In my opinion, Vivian took the photos; she should get paid. However, she is unfortunately no longer with us. She doesn’t really have much of an heir besides a distant cousin (who odds are didn’t know Vivian or her photography).
I’d totally be fine with a little compensation going to those who set up the shows and develop the negatives for their time and effort. With that said, mass market commercialization for art you had no hand in making (and the author will have no say) strikes me as wrong.

Thor: Ragnarok
I mean, it’s a comedic mishmash of Flash Gordon and Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome that stars comic book versions of Norse deities but is, at its center, the story of a young generation dealing with the legacy of their forefathers and how they should move away from it and set out to create a stronger, kinder world even if it means discarding the old one and also robs any narrative weight that an actual, literal apocalypse may have because this movie has its feet firmly set on one side of the argument (the discarding one.)
Also, The Hulk fights a giant wolf on top of a rainbow.
I think you’re either in or you’re out.

It's also very sad in her story, coz she was very poor. If she shown her pics to the world, she might have been quite wealthy. In the end of her life she was searching food in street bins.
She had definitely complicated personality, that's why this movie is so good.

Yeah, for example she took children she was looking after, to the slaughteryhouse to make a pics of dead animals or abanded them on the street and after few hours police found them and brought back home.

First time watching this movie, and it actually holds up pretty well despite all the tech futuristic movies coming out now. I found the story itself often boring, but the concept was captivating. Jude Law's acting of his character was very well done. It was probably longer than it should have been (stretching to around 2.5 hours), as several parts could have been trimmed or cut altogether. Nevertheless, there were many moments that I think I will find memorable.

I always remembered disliking the Batman film when I would watch it as a kid. (I loved Batman Returns as a kid, however.) I decided to watch it again (this would be the 4-5th time in my life, most likely) and I found that, while I found more enjoyment in it, I still don't covet it in high-regard. I'll do a full-scale review down the line, but here's are some quick thoughts:
- I really like Michael Keaton as Batman because I think he portrays him as more antisocial, absent from life, and closed-off than later incarnations, and that's the approach I think works best.
- I always thought I hated Jack Nicholson's portrayal as The Joker (I love Jack Nicholson, in-general, however), but I appreciated him more this time around and realized he isn't the problem I have with this film. This Joker feels very much like the comic-book and animated-series Joker I watched as a kid brought to life, and while he doesn't bring new found depth to the character, he's very enjoyable.
- The music implemented by Danny Elfman is great, but I think Prince's contribution is an off-putting contrast.
- I always thought it was weird that Alexander Knox and Vicki Vale had to "uncover" the mysterious fate of Bruce Wayne's parents. In this film, Vicki Vale is new to the scene, and so, maybe I could cut her some slack. However, the Wayne Family are billionaires and Wayne throws parties frequently that keep him in the spotlight, how would Alexander Knox not know the fate of Wayne's parents, two of the richest people in Gotham?
- I dislike the Red Hood origin for Joker. I also dislike anyone but Joe Chill being responsible for the death of Martha and Thomas.
- I think the last stretch of the film is what brings this film down for me, perhaps the novelty of it had started to wane-down, but I feel in the home-stretch, I no longer cared about the conflict at-hand. It doesn't feel like "Batman" builds up to its climax, but, more like it limps to it, and I feel it deflates a lot.
In the end, it's an alright film. Just don't love it.
Could be. I got the impression that she was simply an oddball eccentric..:) Great stuff.

This too, but stories telling by people, who met her as a children, point out she wasn't quite, hm, normal. I had the feeling, she was cold person, that's why she portrayed in her pics relationships - something, she wasn't able to create with other people. But it's only my presumption;)

I have to confess it's my fav movie about Batman. Everything I saw later wasn't even in 30% as good as this one. Batman here is exactly like you wrote - antisocial guy, not another celebrity. He kill people! Bad people, but doesn't it make him similar to criminals? Keaton shows the consequences of this kind of life.
Jack Nickolson as a Joker was brilliant. I'm surprised that his role as a Joker is so underrated in comparision to Ledger or Leto (sic!). He played sociopath, a man evil to his bones, who knows he hurts people and does it knowingly and intentionally. In case Ledger and Leto Jokers, I had the feeling, they are bored, spoiled teenagers, who wants to have fun. They were rather annoying than scarry.
So I rather appreciate the depth of characters than "firework", which associated to me with new versions.
Anyway, I'm glad you find it more enjoyable every time, you watch it:up:

You can try.
I don't mind to have converastions about docs here, because I don't watch them too many and sometimes I find interesting opinions about docs, searching this thread.
Eh, Nicholson’s Joker is fun but it’s just Jack being Jack.
Pre-Ledger, imo, the best bat-villain is DeVito’s Penguin. Trump by way of The Elephant Man.
Not at all:nope: He wasn't fun. Ledger was fun, Leto was... green:rolleyes: Nickolson was terriffying. De Vito was perfectly gross, exactly like he should be.
I guess it comes down to the individual and they’re all portrayals of a cartoon character but Jack Joker is too big and giddy a performance to instill... really anything in me other than a light chuckle here and there.
I also generally prefer Returns to ‘89 Batman for being more singularly Tim Burton’s movie.

This could have been so much better with a good actress in the lead and made her character less annoying. Also showing in the film how the world actually got to the way it was because I couldn't see how the 'event' in the film lead to a full blown end of the world unless I missed something...
And going by a few lines of dialogue ]in the art gallery scenes at the start about what you can see behind the ugliness of the painting you just knew the guy was going to end up being the creature at the end of the film... Saying that, I did like the way it ended and was a nice touch.

I thought Nicholson's performance was campy and fun, not terrifying in the least. I don't mean that as a jab either, it's true to how the character had most often been interpreted and presented, very much like how he was in the Batman animated series.

The Angry Silence (Dir. Guy Green) (1960) 1
https://i.imgur.com/pPHfgTA.jpg
Richard Attenborough stars in this anti-union picture in the role of Jesus Christ himself, crucified for his beliefs. Visions of John Proctor's "my name is my name" are recalled as Attenborough's character undergoes his titular struggle: his coworkers won't talk to him. Of course, they also throw a brick through his bitch landlady's window and kick him off the soccer squad. It's quite the tribulation. To be a little more fair, events do eventually escalate, and I think this film is certainly well made on a technical and dramatic level. I just don't believe that makes up for its agenda: to obfuscate what is in the best interests of the average worker on behalf of the powerful.
Consider the opening incident of the film. A women is nearly maimed by running equipment on the factory floor. The head of the union chapter relays the event to the boss saying they need to install safety rails to the machines. The boss responds that he likes the rails. They're rusting in the basement at the moment because because the workers themselves don't like how they hinder their work. Of course it's the workers who favor raw productivity over their own safety. This scenario isn't at all contrived to shift blame.
This begins the uniform pattern of the film in defending the dutiful worker while also defending his well intentioned employer who the film has the balls to claim isn't even a part of the core conflict. The film is careful to understand the plight of the most dutiful worker of all, Attenborough's character. It goes to great lengths explaining how he could feel victimized by the actions of coworkers but it ignores completely how strikers can feel cheated by a scab. It might portray their disdain, but it never pays the same attention to what drives it. We might see how a group action can conflict with individual circumstances, but not how individual action can counteract the sacrifice of the many. This selfishness goes unchecked.
This one-way understanding also takes place when examining motivations of the two groups in question. I have no gripe with portraying a man conflicted with financial stress unsure about any loss of work and how his family might suffer for it. Strikes are scary times wrought with insecurity I'd imagine, but the film doesn't show how the company is responsible for that financial insecurity and how that's a calculated tool to suppress any collective bargaining. The company supposedly doesn't play a role in any of this.
Their strike ends with the bosses up top caving immediately. After all, strikes are merely over trivial concerns like not having enough toilet paper. The boys can wait them out at the pub for a few days and do it over some pints. Thus sacrifice isn't really a sacrifice at all. Any respectable adult only needs the hardwork union. Only lazy thugs have the time to skip out on work over frivolous concerns. You can see how this uncharitable interpretation of collective action might spark skepticism. There's only one side worth rooting for here, and unsurprisingly it's the one backed by the powerful which is of course claimed to also be best for the average Joe. After all, a member of a democratic body becomes so equal [they're] nothing. Yes, that fascist sentiment is uttered in this film in a serious tone.
To be clear, I'm not somebody who believes unions can do no wrong. Any hierarchy is capable of evil. A majority's decisions aren't always dictated by the strength of their moral standing. I believe these very broad critiques are applicable to any number of institutions and are not specific to unions. They could certainly fuel a more even keeled film similar to this one. This specific film, however, is never after a multi-faceted view of a conflict driven by subjective perspectives and varying power dynamics. It's about unions for a calculated reason. It's a film that chooses a side from the outset, and proceeds to reinforce that foregone conclusion at every turn. This harrowing tale's protagonist never once considers his company's role in his precarious situation. His only enemy is those who place the last straw on his aching back. His betrayal sparks retaliation, and the film desperately wants you to focus on that retaliation.
Perhaps the greatest irony is that the strikers are portrayed as the ones who aren't open to reasonable discourse. Of course, striking is typically a last resort to opening a reasonable discourse, one driven by the silence of the management. Their silence however isn't very angry, and The Indifferent Silence wouldn't be as catchy a title.
http://dazedimg.dazedgroup.netdna-cdn.com/900/azure/dazed-prod/1230/8/1238244.jpg
Hereditary is a cautious vague horror film, can't really get into the plot. Basically the grandmother dies and things happen over the course of the next 2 hours. Enough threads are kept around to keep the story interesting over scary. It's not a classic, but if you enjoyed Killing of a Sacred Deer but wanted the story to be less pretentious this is a good pick for you.
The big strengths of the film are mostly practical effects and a long story. A number of the best parts of the story we're told about at different points. You also have a great mix of subtle scares, the central theme's manifestations work very well. Toni Collette is very good for most of the parts of the story...but she's got some weak scenes. And really that's the big issue with this film the core cast isn't very good. Some of the crying scenes seem very fake and that was frustrating because the story is so good yet it's not grounded with a great performance.
I think this is going to be a very polarizing film, someone fell asleep during the first act in the theater. Be warned if you see this in a crowded theater I can see some heckling. But for those that did make it to the end they were very shaken and confused.

Big fan of the whole series and I rate the last one highly but this was such a disappointment. The acting was really really bad, with zero chemistry between the characters. Horrible plot and some of the dialogue was cringe worthy, not to mention almost every idea has already been used in the previous films! Takes a long time to get into the film and it relies too heavily on jump scares. Also, don't get too excited about Goldblum, he's barely in it.
But my daughter liked it so its all good.

I dunno, it just didn't work for me. It started with an interesting premise but then it went downhill for me pretty quickly. I just didn't like De Palma's direction, there wasn't enough suspense, it looked dated, the soundtrack was horrible, and the plot was kinda sloppy, contrived and annoyingly improbable at times (IMO), too much so for me to be truly invested in the story. The climactic scene at the end where Sally is killed was a perfect amalgamation of the utter ridiculousness of the film - the cheesy slo-mo melodrama lost me completely. The black humor twist ending was a cool finishing touch but unfortunately I was so disappointed by the rest of the film that I was mostly past caring by that point.
That being said, even though I felt the movie sucked as a standard, typical genre film, I do feel that it might benefit greatly from being approached from a 'meta' perspective because it does seem that it's not so much about the events that take place on the surface as it is about the psychological subtext of the movie-making process and the work of creative imagination -a "movie within a movie" type of narrative. Definitely more here than meets the eye, so I'll keep that in mind when I rewatch it next time - that's what rewatches are for, after all:).

This is a pretty enjoyable thriller featuring early performances from Humphrey Bogart and Bette Davis. Bogie dominates the screen but wasn't quite yet the actor he'd become. Davis was good but hadn't developed her bitchface yet. It starts off slow until wanted murderer Bogart shows up with his crew at a middle of nowhere diner/gas station. Davis is the waitress who is falling in love with a customer. It gets fun for a bit with interesting interplay within the group of hostages. When the big climax came, I thought that interplay became silly.

The Dawn Patrol (1938) 4+ Set during WWI with a strong cast: Basil Rathbone, David Niven, Errol Flynn, along with Donald Crisp and keep an eye out for Barry Fitzgerald. The film focuses on a very small division of flyers who's ranks are constantly refilled on a daily basis. A run isn't made that doesn't lose at least a few men and the replacements get younger and more fresh out of flying school.
While at first there seems to be a little bit TOO much good cheer among these young men who will die that day or the next, but the seriousness does come. Along with some rather good "live action" flights of these biplanes. Especially the final flight that mixes models and staged sets surprisingly well.
I would definitely put this up there with another favorite war film of mine with Flynn, Niven and Crisp; The Charge of the Light Brigade (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0027438/) and one worth checking out for those who enjoy such films for the coming 30's Countdown (https://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?p=1896180#post1896180).

Ultra slick and sometimes bordering on cartoonish is not usually for me but I enjoyed this. Charlize Theron is believable kicking ass and very convincing as a lesbian. The last movie I saw was The Book Club. Reason being, was to witness what took
decades to achieve, the pairing of the two acting titans, Diane Keaton with Jane Fonda.
And throw into the mix, Candice Bergen and Mary Steenburgen to increase the
attraction ratio. Then I was sweetly surprised with seeing RIchard Dreyfuss, Andy Garcia,
Craig T. Nelson, and Ed Begley Jr. in cameos.
The screenplay was pretty witty as well.
So I am sharing my opinion on this flick, and hope it leads to a resurgence of roles for
even more of the legendary players that have given us "memories, light the corners of
my mind."

Total Recall (2012)

I've heard so much about this movie, and I never saw the original. For some reason, I never got around to watching the whole thing in one sitting, since other times it was just a scene here or there. The premise immediately drew me in, but then I feel like that took a backseat to become just another action movie. I couldn't figure out whether the movie was going to have a 'it was all a dream' type of ending or a 'one man takes down a whole army' ending. The latter was what we are given, with no twists or true exploration of how cool this 'Total Recall' idea could really be.

Horror anthology from Mexico where each story has a connection to Mexican folklore. As with most anthology films there are some hits and usually a lot of misses and this was no different. Two segments stand out - the Troll and the homeless guy- not because they were so good but because they were so disgusting/brutal. Of the 8 films one was pretty good, four were ok because they were so disgusting/awful and 3 were bad. Not a good date or family night film.

I believe this is an existential movie, although I can't confirm that since I don't know what it means. It is a new favorite for me when it comes to road and car movies. It's sort of like Easy Rider for cars but this doesn't have the striking moments. However, I thought this was more consistent. There's four main characters; music legends James Taylor and Dennis Wilson as the driver and mechanic of a souped up 55 Chevy, Warren Oates as the driver of a stock GTO, and some girl who plays some girl. The boys are just roaming from state to state and getting into races. I'm not sure what the story is with Oates' character, since he tells a different story to everyone he meets. Anyway, they meet up and become rivals, and also develope a sort of friendship. The girl just tags along with whoever. It's a very American movie, and I even had John Mellencamp's Pink Houses playing in my head. Minimal but suitable dialogue, and no real plot. It's an experience, and one I very much enjoyed.

Oh ok lol. That is true I think its because World war ii is more iconic overall especially with the nazis and such so its more appealing to make a film about.
Dude you should watch The Great war (1959) if you havent. Its Italian and its labled as a comedy but it still has a very realistic depiction of trench warfare and some very powerful scenes imo. One of my favorite films ever.

Speaking of which, I see Netflix have picked up 'The Staircase'. You seen that? They've added 3 new episodes onto the original documentary which was aired in 2005, but I think they've weaved new interviews into the original 8 episodes, so you have to watch them all for the new 3 to make sense.

Once Upon a Time in China (Tsui Hark, 1991): An instant martial arts classic that helped catapult Jet Li into an action star icon with his portrayal of real-life Chinese folk hero Wong Fei-Hung (1877-1924). Epic fight scenes, especially Li taking on Yen Shi-Kwan in a room full of ladders, which years later would be the influence for the Hong Kong-action inspired The Musketeer's climactic fight between D'Artagnan and Febre.

Violence at Noon (1966)
That's more like it Oshima! I watched Realm of The Senses recently and although I could and should have rated it higher, its an experience I don't think I'll ever forget. So naturally for me, its been going higher and higher in my estimation. After that , I watched said directors Gohatto, which really was a disappointment as I felt it was a bit bland. Violence at Noon however, was completely different! Tells the story of a murdering rapist, although it focuses more on two women who are both linked to him. Overall its a really heavy and bleak plot that is acted brilliantly by the 3 lead roles but what really impressed me was the style of filming. With flashbacks and non-linear approach, Oshima created what felt like a nihilistic Godard directing Last Year at Marienbad, which I also loved. The music was superb and cinematography fantastic. Its great that despite its harrowing subject matter, its a film that requires you to pay attention constantly and will not allow you to relax.
What a great film.

A Gray State
I've met a few people who are easily impressionable and delusional.. I think this guy got a chance, and discovered he might not be able to deliver the goods (his movie).. He volunteered for war, that's one.. He marries a Muslim woman who seems to throw it behind (notice there is none of her family interviewed or mentioned except one line), maybe his way of apologizing? I think he became more and more susceptible with every step.. He reminds me of many libertarians who seem to be overly paranoid, and who seem to emphasize most of their time on things that are irrelevant or have already passed.. Guns, religion, etc... And that "Allah Akbar" was probably a dig at his wife, and probably his desire for people to make a big issue out of it, a documentary perhaps. I also think making a movie, and then having access to Alex Jones, his audience, while also seeming to take advantage, might have also seemed to throw him closer to the edge, as well as any negative attention from strangers on social media... Add that with someone who talks libertarian, even though the family has to depend on the wife's paycheck. Another criticism would be the "Why?" question, and it didn't seem like anyone wanted to answer it.. David's father always seemed to lighten the situation, and insert his daughter-in-laws name any time David did something wrong, which seems normal for parents.
What a story! I'm curious what you all think about it...

My friend and I were in the car on the way home debating how good this movie was. We both agreed that it was better than The Shining, but we couldn't agree if it was better than The Exorcist. You know how the hairs on the back of your next stand up when you are creepily frightened? Well, the hairs on the back of my neck, arms and legs were all standing up during certain parts of this movie. It is brutal, it is tense, it is stark and it is unforgiving.
Most stories follow the three Acts of a play:
Act I: Put your hero in a tree.
Act II: Set the tree on fire.
Act III: Get the hero out of the tree.
This movie plays out like this:
Act I: Put your hero in a tree.
Act II Set the tree on fire.
Act III: Set the rest of reality on fire and watch it all burn.
Note: If Toni Collette does not receive at least an Oscar nod (and very possibly the Oscar) for her role here, then she will have been robbed at gunpoint.
I cannot recommend this movie enough. 4.5/5 stars.

I don't have any time to go into it much. I thought it was an interesting story but I really didn't like the doc. It really didn't delve deep enough and just ended up feeling quite pointless, aside from the tragic incident. I found it really odd about his father and couldn't understand why he seemed so happy to talk about it?! I had never heard of this case so had no idea what was going to happen. Probably one of the most depressing endings I've experienced because of the kid.

The Life of Oharu (1952)
Had no idea this was going to be so depressing. Brilliant but so heart-breaking for Oharu, who was played breathtakingly by Tanaka. It is a long film and although its a rather cruel tale, it packs an emotional punch that still feels rewarding.

Tonight I saw Hereditary (2018) in the theater.

She'll do well to get a nod for a horror film released in the summer. Anyone would.

I don't get the hype of Magic Mike. Not enough interest to keep me awake.
Because it’s about, like, the economy and stuff. Like that other movie Soderbergh made with Sasha Grey*. I don’t know. I haven’t seen it but that’s all I hear about.
Other than stripper Tatum (which is the real draw, duh.)
*the show version of The Girlfriend Experience is actually pretty good tho.
I think Tatum is a good actor, but the movie was just dull for meat my age I need more than a six pack to hold my interest.
Lol. Pardon the Freudian slip

Gringo: The Dangerous Life of John McAfee
I liked this.. There was another rich guy who was allowed to murder who was eventually busted for drugs I think. I wish Netflix would recommend things you liked.
In fairness to McAfee...you don't kill four of your crazy neighbors dogs and then not expect him to go...y'know crazy.

There's a compilation advert here at the moment where they show a scene from that Ryan Gosling/Emma Stone film in which she sees his naked top half and says "It looks Photoshopped!" I love that :).

Snake in the Eagle's Shadow (Yuen Woo-Ping, 1978): Just before making this film, Jackie Chan was reaching the end of his rope after the numerous failed films with Lo Wei. Thankfully, Yuen Woo-Ping, who knew Chan from their days as stuntmen, recommended Chan to producer Ng See-Yuen and the end result is a stellar kung fu film with comic overtones that features Chan as a bullied young man who learns the Snake Fist style and combines a new technique he developed called Cat's Claw with Snake to take on the Eagle Claw villain, played by Hwang Jung-Lee.
Trivia: Hwang Jung-Lee, a grandmaster in Taekwondo, accidentally kicked Jackie Chan's tooth out during their final fight. At various points you can see the gap in Chan's mouth. Obviously, Chan had no worries as the two would reunite to fight each other in the more successful Drunken Master.

I was fortunate to see this double feature last night. The good thing about double feature was I was able to recap the first episode, on the other hand the not so good thing about double feature was that the 1st movie turned out to be more superior than the sequel. (This happened to me when I saw The Force Awakens & The Last Jedi double feature)
Incredibles 2
The story continued right after what we were left with 14 years ago, it's just nice to see those beloved heroes. The animation and technology seems to be better but not in a big margin. The score is as great as before.
Things I didn't like:
- Weak villain compared to the 1st one, and the motive is just stupid
- The super powers are not as magical as the 1st one, it reminds me of X-Men and Portal the video game. You won't really have a WOW moment watching this movie as we did 14 years ago.
- The intensity in most action scenes are not there, you won't have any real concern about our heroes, as we did in the first movie.
Final score:
The Incredibles: 4
Incredibles 2: 3.5
Don't get me wrong, I still enjoyed this movie, a lot. But it is not as magical as the original.

I wanted it to be more scary than it is. There are disturbing moments – to be honest I think the scariest the film gets is the family standing looking at the dark wood very early on. Good sound and music in that scene.
Also:
it really irritates me that they would be so stupid as to give the ending away on that poster. There's one young woman in the film so it's pretty clear what's being implied.

I quite liked the old English of Ye, Thee, Thy etc. Although the lead actresses American accent gives it away on a few occasions. But still well acted throughout.
