Watched It 2 and it changed something. I'm completely giving up on popular movies. I remember many people saying like 7 years ago how modern horror is ****, but nah this is next level. This is like epitome of trash and everything wrong with horror and movies in general. It's funny that it's not part of comedy genre. That's straight up lie. Besides that It 2 is one of the worst movies I have ever witnessed. I'm sorry about random rant.

Very cool silent picture. It's on youtube in fully restored 2K copy, and it looks great. But what really stood out was the realistic jungle sets and the amazing clay, stop motion animation dinosaurs. Casino (1995)
A continuation of my recent Scorsese streak, I finally made it to this amazing film. I absolutely loved the whole experience of it. Everything about this, from the look and feel of every scene, to the fantastic performances from De Niro, Pesci, and Stone, all pulled me into an extremely engaging and entertaining masterpiece of cinema.
This feels like such an underappreciated gem in the grand repertoire of Scorsese, where I'm used to the big name of Goodfellas being the king of his gangster flicks.
Definitely will rewatch both this and Goodfellas again to see how I feel about them, but for now I am glad to have finally seen this and I don't need a rewatch to know it was phenomenal.

Adoption (1975)
Directed by Marta Meszaros, who was the first woman to win Berlinale's Golden Bear award, for this cold but sublime melodrama. A 43 year old battle-hardened woman factory worker, tells the married man she is having an affair with, that she wants a baby. As you can imagine, this doesn't go down well and problems arise from this.
A cold but heartfelt film from Hungary, this is a really powerful film. My first from Meszaros but certainly not my last.

'The Heiresses' (2018)
https://i.imgur.com/xzCCait.gif
It's hard to believe this is Marcelo Martinessi's first feature. Which he also wrote. It is a beautifully crafted film which delicately tells the tale of Chela and her long term partner Chiquita. Chela is played by Ana Brun who gives an amazingly real performance. We follow her struggles as she tries to cling on to her quite well off life in Asuncion, Paraguay - during which her partner gets incarcerated.
Chela faces uncertainty, poverty and loneliness. But she doesn't tell us this at any point. The audience is able to get a feel of Chela's struggles simply from the wonderful performance from Ana Brun, and Martinessi's directing. Her world has been turned upside down, and she must make some big decisions.
There is also some subtext surrounding class, desires, wealth and the social environment of Paraguay, but at it's heart, it is all about Chela.
This film deserves to be seen.

Originally serialised with an often increasingly fanciful plot that although providing a reasonable level of Saturday matinee style entertainment can become a little tiresome when watched as a single entity .... so imo almost certainly remains best watched in serial format (also still not sure whether Mazamette's character is an overall asset or liability to enjoyment tbh)

About sisters trying to make it on Broadway, and it wasn't a bad watch. I'm not the person to make a judgment on a musical but I thought it was ok. The first talkie best picture winner, and I would assume one of the first musicals. It probably took home the Oscar because it was something new and different; how else to explain 35% Rotten Tomatoes and 5.7 IMDb.

Who's That Knocking at My Door (Martin Scorsese, 1967) 2.5
Evidently a couple of ideas strangely edited into one for whatever reasons, but a lot of promise in the film. A great performance by Harvey Keitel, in particular in the religious relationship storyline.
Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (Martin Scorsese, 1967) 3
A stronger effort here, with a couple of great performances. Really interesting to see Scorsese tackle a strong female character at the centre of the film. Kris Kristofferson has such a strong screen presence, I could watch him all day.
The Color of Money (Martin Scorsese, 1986) 2
Really had high hopes for this as I am a massive pool fan and player (albeit British 8-ball, blackball rules), and love The Hustler, so I was hoping this would be an underrated favourite. Unfortunately not, the characters including Newman's are just standard caricatures, and the plot and screenplay are very weak, the ending story and resolution left me very disappointed.
Phantom Thread (Paul Thomas Anderson, 2017) [Cinema] 3.5
Loved the cinematography of this film, the camerawork up close and personal. Lots of close-up and shots focussed on fine details and objects, and the movement of the camera between the various rooms and switching between characters helped build the power dynamics. It reminded me of Hitchcock in films like Rebecca and Notorious, and Max Ophuls too who has obviously had a big influence on Anderson. Another great Greenwood score too. The story was a bit weak I thought, and I never truly felt gripped or enthralled by it, I wish Anderson would make another Boogie Nights.
Call Me By Your Name (Luca Guadagnino, 2017) [Cinema] 2.5
A film definitely worth the watch because of the two central performances. Chalamet and Hammer are absolutely superb. At the beginning I thought the plot could potentially irritate me, and its easy for films tackling subjects like this to come across as insincere, but through the two performances it was very believable and affecting, I completely bought their two characters. The intentions and thoughts of both of them did not need to be expressed through dialogue, but through their physicality and interactions, their thoughts, desires and concerns could be implicitly expressed.
I felt about an hour in the film started to meander and the director was not sure what direction to talk it. That's the difficulty with something so sensual, when you start to introduce more plot it can be difficult to know where to go. I didn't think the direction was overly interesting, there was nothing new or innovative to elevate the content, it was more like usual smart-modern stylistic art affair with flashy colours and pop music.
Araby (João Dumans and Affonso Uchoa, 2017) 3.5
Wonderful Brazilian film that my friend had kept recommending me. A look into working class Brazil, with a look into the life of Cristiano - a man with ups and downs, with love and loss. It was very reminiscent of Bresson in its use of light to create wonderful images, in its muted naturalistic performances and its heightened use of diegetic sound.
Ad Astra (James Gray, 2019) [Cinema] 4.5
I have heard great things about James Gray from a number of people online whose opinions I really respect on film, but I had not seen a film from him before this. Someone told me that he was one of few modern directors to understand "film spatiality" so I was curious as to how what approach this artistic director would bring to a mainstream marketed film.
Wow was I blown away. What a film. It might sound like hyperbole but I really do think this is one of the most beautiful films that I have ever seen. Every frame and scene is gorgeous, the use of space, colour, the editing, everything is perfect. There is nothing about the composition of the shots that I would change. Amazing to see such a considered film get a big budget and backing. I really was in awe throughout the whole film, I felt like I was watching it with my jaw wide open throughout. There are just so many stunning sequences but even the little scenes and moments are just perfect.
I've written a full review of the film here - https://screen-hopping.co.uk/film-reviews/ad-astra/
Now I want to see more films from Gray!

I liked this a lot. My only problem was not knowing all the sides, because I'm reading subtitles, and there's the pro and anti-Bolsheviks, and then you add Hungarians, and both sides speak the other language at times. It was a personal war movie. It seems like most of the movies that take place over 100 years ago spend too much effort emphasizing the dress, costumes, speech. And then I think "This was made about 10 years after the USSR invaded Hungary".

Parasite (2019) - 4.5
I usually like to make sure the films I give this rating to are at least a year old. Since I'm confident enough that this one will stay this high though, I'm going to leave it like this. Like Burning, another recent South Korean film which I love, this one is best to go into without knowing much about the plot, so I'm not going to say too much about it. What I will say though is that it's a multi-layered, fascinating film which took the themes of another one of Joon-ho Bong's films which I consider to be great and actually managed to perfect them to something far more shocking and enthralling as multiple developments of them are daring to the point that the film constantly runs the risk of falling apart, yet thanks to Bong's direction, everything is held together quite flawlessly and, as a result, the entire film makes for a truly breathtaking feat. With that out of the way, I'll also add that the comedy is well-written and funny, yet it never manages to undermine the more serious elements to the film, the cinematography/framing is quite good, the final act is outstanding, and the final minute or so is truly sublime. Make sure to keep an eye out for this one.

I enjoyed this quite a bit but it felt a little off to me, no surprise with it being a Coen movie. Their movies are usually love or hate for me. This ended up being somewhere in the middle. Until his last couple of scenes, Matt Damon (or his character) brought the movie way down whenever he was on screen. I generally like him but thought he was a bad fit. Josh Brolin was ineffective in his small role when he finally appeared. Jeff Bridges and the girl, and their relationship, was the strength of the film. No surprise when I saw Steven Spielberg's name in the credits as producer, and I think he had good and bad influences. Overall an uneven experience.

Shadows of Fear: The Death Watcher (TV, 1971) – 6/10
My first experience of this series; it was the subject matter that attracted me – a scientist trying to prove that spirits can communicate with the living. It's a different slant on the concept, and has some unsettling moments, but overall I found it a bit lacking. Judy Parfitt was the best thing about it I felt, and it stars John Neville a year before he left for Canada. An interesting technique, and something that amused me, was the regular use in flashback of the smug, know-it-all husband.

Shadows: Time Out of Mind (TV, 1976) – 7.5/10
Very good, this. Very good. Some visual tricks that I can't remember seeing before and I know this era pretty well. The first thing we see is the teenage main character, Liz, daydreaming. She imagines herself in place of the subjects of different photographs in a shop window. This was achieved seamlessly and makes today's Photoshop jobs look really terrible. The next effect is the girl imagining a series of different buildings, including a castle, taking the place of her home. Eventually, during a visit to a museum, Liz is literally projected into a turn of the century doll's house, assuming the form of the maid and interacting with versions of her own family as her 'betters'. What I particularly enjoyed here is the production design – again, I've never seen anything like it. The rooms of the period house are done in such a way as to retain the sense of being inside a miniature, I would say through certain 'imperfections', such as the wallpaper and the hand drawn scenery through the windows. Fascinating stuff. The only part of the story that seemed silly was that Liz is pretty much dragged to the museum by her mum despite showing an enquiring mind as well as an interest in history during the opening sequence :p:).

Matt Damon (who I like) was awful in this. Stilted. Takes some doing out woodening Glen Campbell. The film was good though and more should have been made of the bond between Rooster and the lass. Such a patchy movie.

All kinds of fun, not in the class of the original King Kong, but much better than the last couple of Jurassic Park movies. Of course the effects are archaic, but I sure didn't mind. Pretty good characters too.

Really bizarre film that actually works as a horror-comedy, where as a lot of todays simply do not. Manages to mix some funny moments with genuinely well made death scenes. Really enjoyed Price in this one.

This film was made with a lot of public money. Wich means, my (and my brothers) fu****g money. Not only that, this guy (the director) uses our money in an illegal way to make his films. Good **** they can't jail the guy 'cause this country is ****ed up.
Also, this film is left-wing — I believe there are some great differences between right and left in USA/Brazil (?)

The Brazilian left is still the old school "Lenin was a cool guy" Marxist left that thinks the world is divided into "good guys" and "bad guys". The US left is left liberal (except Bernie), which would be center right in Brazil.
Anyway, I will pass this one.
I was disappointed because the movie started out very good and then became super moronic ideological propaganda.

Wesley Snipes' character is really unlikable and the secondary story of crackhead Samuel L. Jackson is a lot more interesting than the interracial romance that is the primary story. The film makes some bold statements about bigotry but the primary story never really gels. It's never boring though.

An absolute triumph for Clint Eastwood, who was robbed of Best Actor and Best Director nominations for his work. Eastwood is superb as a bigoted, recently widowed Korean war veteran whose accidental friendship with a pair of Asian teenagers who live next door to him gets him involved with some serious gangbangers. This is appointment movie viewing, especially for fans of the star...upping my original rating.

The director of White Men Can't Jump and the writers of Splash are responsible for this winning comedy about a trio of buddies who take a vacation participating in an actual cattle drive. I had forgotten how funny this movie is...the screenplay is surprisingly intelligent and I love the way it never lets the viewer forget that even though these guys are playing cowboy, they are regular Joes who have issues back home. Crystal is perfection and even though he is not billed, I'm pretty sure he had a hand in the screenplay. My favorite scenes are the stampede Crystal causes with his coffee maker, when the three guys talk about the best and worst days of their lives, and of course, Crystal's assistance in the birth of a baby calf which he names Norman. Palance is a lot of fun as Curly, but the performance is hardly Oscar worthy, his Lifetime Achievement award really should have gone to Tommy Lee Jones for JFK, but I understand the win. Severely underrated movie comedy.

Loved this, and I was laughing my head off at Scary Terry's incessant and often out-of-place uses of "bitch" (surely a reference to Freddy vs. Jason). The dog plotline was also brilliant.
Shortly after becoming a fan of Rick and Morty I discovered that it was partly based on Doctor Who, but it would be interesting to find out exactly what era/Doctor the creators first saw, or the one that proved the most influential. The scenarios and the science fiction ideas are frequently as imaginative and the situation of Rick and Morty escaping into the dreams of a chain of characters was very like my onetime favourite programme.

Wow. I've been on an Eastern European binge, and was a little surprised that I stumbled upon one in German, but it caught my attention quickly. It's considered avant-garde experimental, stylish, art-house, but don't let this push you away. It's also a great story, one I've never seen in a movie, a character who is a kleptomaniac (which you find out in the first 20 seconds), but it's just so great, and she's great. She wrote, directed, AND starred. For some reason I thought of Vincent Gallo and "Buffalo '66" and then I just find out she also did everything herself, like he did. I also found out that they both never made any other movies that were given any attention, but I'll look. Both movies are also very good, without being pretentious, no waste. I hate when the counter-criticism of watching paint dry is defended as "artsy".

This was easily the movie from the Silent Era I was most looking forward to, and for good reason. The original version is 9 hours long and mostly lost. There's a 4 hour restoration out there, but Captain Spaulding recommended the 140 minute version. I couldn't find that so I watched a widely available 110 minute version on YouTube. Pretty much all of the silent films I've been watching, I could describe them with the caveat that they're this or that for their time. This movie is timeless, just as meaningful as it was 95 years ago, and startlingly real. The performances are superb, and it's a must see, especially if you're sending in a list for the Pre-30's countdown.

1st Re-watch...this luminous coming of age story seemed even better the second time around. Saoirse Ronan's contemporary Molly Ringwald earned her a richly deserved Oscar nomination and I still think Laurie Metcalf was robbed of the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her richly layered work as Lady Bird's mother. I found it a lot more interesting than Allison Janney's one-note performance in I Tonya. Greta Gerwig really found her niche in this business behind the camera as the writer and director of this gem.

I didn't knew this would be a Jackie Chan movie where people actually laugh more at the credits. Matthew McConaughey is alright, alright, alright, the acting in the end is fine. Keanu Reeves, hype'est man of the moment is always interesting to see. And that's it, we get a minute, two minutes if we're lucky of what we want to see, the rest is just, an ex-fat funny man going around somewhere trying to find famous people, when he finds them, half I didn't knew who the f*ck they were, all to in the end get his own late night talk show, to reject it.

Fans of Guillermo del Toro will no doubt appreciate this, as there is a huge influence shown here. It's a fantasy horror drama set in Mexico, dealing with crime, death, ghosts, loss and hope. We follow a group of kids who have all suffered loss as they try and fight their way through the gangs and cartels. There are some choreographed moments in the final act that are a little too convenient, but the performances of the children are very decent, and there are a couple of violent acts I didn't see coming.

7.6/10
I watched this few days ago as well. I thought it was pretty good too (gave it 4/5 so pretty much the same rating as you). It's actually better than most del Toro films so influences were put to good use.

I thought it drew on alot from The evil's Backbone and a bit from Pan's Labyrinth. The budget was limited and I think it was Lopez' first film, so it is overall a good effort.
What dd you think was the symbolism behind the very last shot? I think it can be read 2 ways.

Way Down East (D.W. Griffith 1920)
By far my most favorite pairing of D.W. Griffith and Lillian Gish. Way Down East is a dramatic, heart felt tale of a teen age girl who's abused by a rich womanizer older man and then abandoned to fend for herself. This was a really touching and though provoking film, it's bittersweet and happy all at the same time. The iceflow scenes on the frozen winter was one of the most dramatic endings I've seen in any movie.

Midnight in Paris (2011)
https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/61rCq1aa-AL._SY445_.jpg
I liked this for what it is - a lighthearted whimsical romantic comedy.
It's very obvious it's written and directed by Woody Allen after the first few minutes of dialogue - it's his style - and if he was younger I could see him playing the part of Owen Wilson's character.
It's also a time travel story without being a sci-fi (thus making it fantasy).
Most of the historical figures that show up are cameos of a few big Hollywood names - so that aspect was good too.
Clever and funny (but more quirky funny & witty as opposed to laugh out loud funny).
I'm still on the fence about Owen Wilson - sometimes I really like him and other times he's a bit annoying, but he was great in this, his style of speech just fit the main character.
A very easy & fun watch with great scenery and interesting concept - it left me feeling good.

Oh, cool! Did you review it here on the site?
Yes, it's Woody Allen-esque without being a Woody Allen movie (I guess since Woody isn't actually in it) if that makes any sense! :)
I was surprised when I found out it involved a time-travel plot (so of course I was hooked into it at that point) so it was like I was getting the bonus of a sci-fi element even though I wasn't watching a sci-fi movie. And I liked the little message of "these are the good ol' days" since everyone of every time thinks some previous era was the "golden age" while the present seems lackluster and boring.

Larry Clark's usual youth culture sex hopelessness fare. This film doesn't seem to have dated at all after 18 years and was a pretty great watch. Echoes of Gummo, Badlands, LA Haine and Clark's Kids are evident.
Clark doesn't focus on the bully, or the parents or the school but instead the boredom and aimlessness of the group and how mucked up they are because they've all been failed by some aspect of society.
The editing in this movie really stands out. The way shots and scenes are cut is very impressive. They make the film feel that much more "in the now" and real. There's one scene where the camera follows a conversation around the group in a circle like motion as if the characters are just billowing out a stream of consciousness because they do not know what they are doing. They think they do, but they are just lost. The ending was quite shocking given it is based on a true life story.

Sat down to watch this last night with a bowl of popcorn and a Dr. Pepper. About 20 minutes into the movie and I cracked a tooth on seed but that still wasn't the worst thing about last night. This movie was. A trailer trash couple decide to rob the woman's "sugar daddy" of 68 grand. The robbery doesn't go as expected and now the guy is on the run from his crazy girlfriend with the money. It tries to be funny but it isn't. There isn't a single likeable character. About halfway through (being generous) you're hoping they all just drop dead and the credits roll so you can get on with your life. I wanted to do the rare "walk out" but was a glutton for punishment after the popcorn incident.

I enjoyed the film, although not one of Allen's best. But for the life of me, I can't see the appeal of Owen Wilson. He's not a bad actor, but he just seems to be whining all the time. It's a mystery to me how he got popular.

Midnight in Paris (2011)
Director: Woody Allen
Writer: Woody Allen
Cast: Owen Wilson, Rachel McAdams, Katy Bates,Nina Arianda
Genre: Fantasy, Drama, Romance
Premise (spoiler free): A disillusioned Hollywood writer dreams of living in Paris in the 1920s, writing a great novel and meeting his literary heroes. At midnight he goes back in time and does just that.
Review: The film starts off with a black screen and a voice, it's Owen Wilson's voice and I think to myself, 'ugh...not the guy from Zoolander.'...I prepare to endure the film....But within 10 minutes I'm liking it! Midnight in Paris is a nice little fun film with a neat premise... what if you could go back to the past to visit your 'golden age', would you?
The golden age is a dream of nostalgia for some distant time in the past. For Gil (Owen Wilson), it's Paris 1920's among the 'lost generation' of American expatriates, writers and other artist. At midnight each night, a 1920's touring car rolls up and whisk Gil away to the Paris of 1920's. There he meets: F. Scott & Zelda Fitzgerald, Cole Porter, Ernest Hemingway, Gertrude Stein, Picasso, Dalí and more. But most notably Gil meets Picasso's girlfriend and falls head over heels for her.
Woody Allen does fantasy well in the film. He focuses on the people and the moments. He doesn't waste film on trying to explain the 'what ifs' of time travel, as it's unimportant to the story.
It's a great premise too. I liked seeing all the famous artist and 1920's Paris. Owen Wilson makes a great Woody Allen and shines in the role. Yes once again Woody inserts himself into the movie via the character of Gil, but this time I don't object, as Owen makes a good young Woody facsimile.
Production Stuff: The 1920's Paris sets and costumes are nicely done, very believable and great to look at it. The scene lengths, the composition, the direction, everything is very nice...except the damn yellow tint. At times Gil's blonde fiancee (Rachel McAdams) actually had yellow hair. Still this film made me smile and I do recommend it.

I saw a bit of The Transporter Refueled last night and was very disappointed. I didn't think Ed Skrein had enough acting ability or presence to make the role his own, which is a shame. I have seen something of Chris Vance in the TV series and thought he did a decent job but neither actor comes close to Jason Statham's Frank Martin. I prefer Statham's look, physical shape and especially his voice.

I thought this was a mess. The dialogue was awful, attempts at humour not funny, the storyline itself ridiculous and all over the place. The direction was not interesting and I found it a chore to get through. I say this as someone who enjoyed the previous film to a degree.
Slacker (Richard Linklater, 1990) 4
What a great debut film. An absolute marvel considering the budget it was made on, from the very first scene it is evident the talent Linklater has. The script is so self-confident and so is the camerawork to go with it. The film has a great flow and feel to it, moving effortlessly between characters and conversations. For its entire length its engrossing and interesting, I'm glad I finally got round to this.
Searching for Sugar Man (Malik Bendjelloul, 2012) 3
The subject matter of the documentary is fascinating. The story really is bizarre, and makes for a fantastic feel-good journey, very surreal and moving in parts. I thought though that the structure was quite conventional and was left wanting more, the film could have used its format to explore some of the more interesting elements of the story, such as the character of Rodriguez himself.
A Scanner Darkly (Richard Linklater, 2006) 3
This one took a bit of getting used to, but by the end I was fully immersed in the nightmare would Linklater creates for Dick's novel. The rotoscoping creates a world that feels incredibly uneasy and nightmare-like, I see this as the antithesis to Waking Life in many ways in how the characters inhabit a living hell, a nightmare where they have no control. Like a really bad trip, this one puts you off ever doing drugs, the structure of the storytelling that at first feels disorientating all comes together for a powerful finale.
Even When I Fall (Sky Neal & Kate McLarnon, 2017) [Cinema] 2
A documentary about rescued slaves from circuses in Nepal, who come together and use their experiences to form a new circus in India, free of slavery, using their performances to promote their message and advance the lives of others they meet. A quite interesting story and a stark reminder of the horrors many people face across the world. I thought though that as an hour and half long film it struggled a bit, it needed more of a narrative focus to create a more interesting insight into some of the elements of the story instead of just feeling like an extended awareness video.
It's Impossible to Learn to Plow by Reading Books (Richard Linklater, 1988) 3
An interesting precursor to Slacker that in many ways couldn't be much further from it, instead of focussing on a multitude of characters and conversations, this film focusses solely on Linklater's character as he completes various mundane tasks in his usual day-to-day life. The film might as well be called "It's Impossible to make movies..." and works as a statement to the power of cinema in capturing life. Like Slacker, despite the films limited content, Linklater is able to display a fantastic degree of self-confidence as a writer and director.
Woodshock (Lee Daniel & Richard Linklater, 1985) 1
A short that Linklater and his friend made about a local music festival. More of a little home movie capturing footage and playing around with fast editing and some effects in a psychedelic style. Forgettable.
Torn Curtain (Alfred Hitchcock, 1966) 3.5
A film with so many great ingredients such as its international spy plot, interesting characters and some fantastic scenes with Hitchock's usual great direction. It is clear though that the film is far from the finished article and Hitch's best. I was not surprised to read that he didn't want to cast either main actor (Julie Andrews is particularly bland) and had problems with the script, the shooting schedule and Bernard Herrmann. Some of the sequences lacked the usual incisive feeling that the editing and sound of Hitch's films usually deliver. Trim this by ten to twenty minutes, replace Andrews with Eva Marie Saint, use Herrmann's original score and you'd be looking at something close to a really great film.

I loved most of it until the guys started to age and have makeup on. Eddie Murphy was king in the 80's; then he started doing either crappy or kid movies. This wasn't far from vintage Eddie and it was fun to watch. My wife kept commenting on how young he looked; then she kept commenting on why didn't I tell her the movie was 20 years old. Have always liked Martin Lawrence too, and they made a good pair. A funny movie with a nice way about it.

After watching the first 15 minutes,I found it so dry I skipped to the last act. It's almost as if the movie makers concentrated so much on historical accuracy that they forgot they were making a drama.
A remake is in sore need. Sure, we may not have the bombers anymore, but they could probably do a good job with CGI now.

Shadows: The Inheritance (TV, 1976) 5/10
A bit of a dip in form with this one but it improved as it went along. As with the episode The Dark Streets of Kimball's Green, history is haunting the present. I enjoyed the allusions to a symbiosis between the gamekeepers and the deer and a closer association with nature, represented in the horn dance. Dreams came into play but while the pay-off was satisfying I felt that the grandson's 'vision' should have also been in a dream. As shown it's unclear whether it's a daydream, from his imagination, or an actual apparition, so a lot of potential ambience is missed.
John Barrett was very familiar and it turns out he was Mr. Olthwaite, father of the eponymous Eric, in Ripping Yarns, who, in his son's presence, would pretend to be French just to avoid speaking to him 😁.

Loved the finale – so callous :p. There's a notable line in this where Rick tells Morty to hold his breath during the miniaturisation process. It struck a chord because miniaturisation featured a year later in the Doctor Who episode Into the Dalek – with maybe the Rickest characterisation of the Doctor. There, the miniaturees are advised to breathe normally, with breath-holding a definite no-no ;D.

Small story that I'd call more a black comedy than a psychological thriller. Seann William Scott is great as the new dad that's past and sense of "protecting his son" gets way out of order. I liked this and and am increasingly thinking Scott has a lot of strings to his bow.

Several folks have recommended this movie, and I just got around to watching it last night. It's a South Korean film directed by Joon-Ho Bong (Okja, Snowpiercer).
Advertised as a thriller, the movie is actually a wild ride, full of off-beat and wacky comedy, up until the abrupt change of pace in the finale that was very surprising. It includes first rate acting, and some emergent cinematography that grabs one's attention.
I've only watched half a dozen Korean films, and not one has been sub-par. It makes me wonder what they're doing over there to have such a high percentage of quality!

Reminded me of Baraka (1992), only with a lot more kinetic energy and delivered at a frenzied pace. The film isn't a story, it's a kaleidoscope of images blended together with some amazing film technique that must have been cutting edge for the time. It was fascinating to see, sort of an early art house film.

Possessed (1947)
A very enjoyable, if uneven, example of 1940s noir and psychological drama. Much of the dreamy quality of the film is enhanced by the black and white shading, the settings, and Franz Waxman’s evocative score.
Joan Crawford stars in the complex role of a woman obsessed with a lover (Van Heflin) who is indifferent, and grows to resent her clinging. At the film’s opening we are presented with Crawford wandering downtown Los Angeles in a semi-catatonic state, who ends up in a psychiatric emergency hospital where she gradually relates how she deteriorated into her mental condition.
Raymond Massey plays her wealthy domestic employer whose wife commits suicide, and his daughter (Geraldine Brooks) falls for the same caddish man who has jilted Crawford. Massey and Crawford are brought together, and steadfastly face the future after a particularly serious event by Crawford.
The direction by Curtis Bernhardt and the screenplay itself are a little mixed, and some of the plot and emotional transitions might have been better handled. Still, this is a fascinating watch, and a prime example of Crawford’s breadth as an actress.

Despite getting help from local dermatologist Dr. Crober (Barbara Crampton), she discovers that the only way she can stay beautiful is by killing young women and grafting their skin onto hers, which regenerates the cells. I was losing hope in both Jai Courtney and Nat Wolff but this film has brought redemption for both actors. Courtney plays a Marine who is also a by the book police officer who contends with his moral compass when his younger half-brother, played by Wolff, is imprisoned for the accidental death of his friend in a bar fight and on top of that, while imprisoned, he faces abuse from the guards on a daily basis. There is a great subplot involving Finn Wittrock's struggle with both his battle wounds and his relationship with an ex-girlfriend. The writers (Rubin and Sean Mullin) did their research and brings a sense of authenticity to the film.

Probably called firecracker because everytime someone gets hit during a fight it sounds like someone lit off a pack of firecrackers. POW-POW-POWPOW-POW. A martial arts film where the heroine (a black belt) goes to an Asian city to find her missing sister which inevitably leads to her discovering a Mafia led drug ring and a martial arts tournament to the death. She investigates and kicks ass (no mention of bubble gum, but I'm fairly certain that she's out of it). Sometimes, while fighting, she slowly loses articles of clothing until... yep, naked Kung Fu (that's probably where the alternate title Naked Fist comes from.) For what it is, a bad movie, it's not too bad.

The Poison Rose (2019)
This is a "B" picture with "A" potential. If you're a fan of '40s noir, as am I, the mood and style are very appealing.
Starring John Travolta and Morgan Freeman, the story set in 1978 is accompanied by frequent narration from Travolta's character, a former football star who is now a private eye. He's hired to leave L.A. and return to his former home town --Galveston-- in order to investigate a missing persons case in a city now controlled by underworld chief Morgan Freeman, which leads to plenty of dirty dealing and plot twists.
The story and development are interesting enough, but some of the dialogue and presumably the directing are what let this movie down. Travolta, who's been in some stinkers, is surprisingly believable in his role as a PI with a Texas accent. Freeman, in his 50th role this year, is first rate as always; and manages to take a trite character and make him interesting.
There is fine character acting from Brendan Fraser, who plays a creepy drug dealing psychiatrist; and from Peter Stormare as "Slide".
Although there are several groaner moments in the film, it holds one's interest. With better direction and fewer "chiefs", this could have been a much better picture.

I might be rating this too early, because I feel like my rating could go up or down considerably in the next few days thinking about this movie. It was beautifully shot, but the plot didn't grip me like it should have. It borrowed elements from movies like Interstellar and Blade Runner, but it didn't seem to really follow through on standing on it's own.

Hollywood on Trial. (1976).
This is a fantastic documentary about the Hollywood blacklist and its repercussions, with actual interviews with many of those involved. Great documentary, nominated for an Oscar in that category.

Call Me By Your Name (2017)
This is far from the films I would usually watch and enjoy so I wasn't really expecting much. Only ever seen Chalamet once, in Beautiful Boy (in which he was amazing) and was never a fan of Hammer but I thought this was truly exceptional. Both actors were fantastic, along with Stuhlbarg, who's speech at the end was something else. The whole movie felt so authentic, from the setting to the soundtrack. What a great film.

I've had movie thurst :yup: for a while and this seemed like a good choice to end the drought. Unfortunately, nobody is talking about it. Your sentiment seems to mirror what I heard. "Looks amazing, uninspired."

It's great isn't it. Felt like it belonged in the 1960s classic bracket or something. The way Chalamet captured his true feelings is fantastic. (the end scene as he's facing the camera - sniff).
When Sufjan Steven's Mystery of Love played and they were just ambling about on the mountainside I was just overcome with how beautiful the film was. The camerawork and ambience when they are in the town square too - amazing.
Superb film.

That was a great scene. I also loved the dance party scene, I think it was Love My Way, was playing, with Chamalet sat on the seat watching, so simple yet so much going on right there. Fantastic.

Yeah that is just great Direction. There's alot to be said about the absence of dialogue in this movie. Helps if you have actors as good as Chalamet though.
I love that Psychadelic Furs song too - always have done, when it came on I was like....

Greed (1924)
Maybe one of the greatest films that never was. Greed had a hard time making it to the silver screen. Director Erich von Stroheim shot 85 hours of film and spent 2 hours filming in Death Valley for what would end up being only a 20 minute segment. Stroheim spent a year editing the film down to an epic 8 hour length and that was a year of his life he wasn't paid for as his contract stipulate he wouldn't be paid for post production work.
Only 12 people on the planet ever saw the completed 8 hour epic that was once Greed. Several of those 12 called Greed the greatest film ever made. And that's where Greed's story turns sour as the studio hacked and hacked the film down until it was only a couple hours long. All of that editing was against the wishes of Stroheim. In the beginning of the version of Greed I just watched there's a quote from Stroheim who laments the misery he suffered as other's cut his opus down to size.
What we have today is a film that's worth watching but will never have the full effect Stroheim intended. I watched the 1 hour 50 minute restored version and it reminded me of Orson Welle's The Lady From Shanghai, in that both films are vastly interesting, but the pacing is off with missing scenes and choppy editing...editing that broke both director's hearts.

It's an 80's slasher, kind of, about a trio of kids born during a full eclipse who go nuts around their 10th(?) birthday and start killing all the adults in town. Starred Billy Jane who you may or may not remember as the young sex crazed brother in Just One of the Guys, K.C. Martel, the kid from E.T. who was always wearing headphones and Julie Brown of 80's Mtv fame who has a rather memorable scene in this (it's not Downtown JB, it's the JB who was in Earth Girls are Easy).
It was a little different, a little Bad Seed-ish flavor. Not terribly scary, but I'll ramp up the scares as we inch closer to Halloween.
