As far as this one goes, I loved the first half, but then there were parts of the second half when I wondered what the point was.
Just finished it and i largely felt the same. Loved the first half, even just the weird way the characters spoke to each other so unnervingly openly. The second half started to lose me though. Still thought it was very interesting and i want to see his other films now even though i didn't love this.

Tangerine Dream is just like Vangelis, they make the soundtrack a character.
Yeah, I was pleasantly surprised when I watched The Keep that it was them. I also like their score for Legend.
I was watching Monsters again recently and Jon Hopkins' score for that is comparable to the artists mentioned. There's so much individual character to the music that it stands out beyond most film scores and it's impossible to imagine the film without it. I would say Toto's/Brian Eno's music for Dune is exactly the same. Another example is Michael Mann's Heat, though it's a combination of several artists' work alongside Elliot Goldenthal.

The Greatest Showman (2017)
(Insert title-based pun here.)
Possibly the shallowest film I’ve watched in a long time; The Greatest Showman has all the depth and nuance of a pepsi advert. Now, I have a soft spot for musicals, however cheese-tastic, so I’m willing to cut it a little slack, but only a little.
There’s wholesale rewriting of history going on here. Not just the facts of Barnum’s life and character but just the general way the world seems to operate. But even ignoring that it’s just pretty plotless; this is a fluff piece about a poor man who makes it big, neglects his family for a bit and then comes back home after learning a life lesson. The only subplot is the ham-fisted insta-romance between Zac Efron and Zendaya that looks as though it, as well as the actors, has stepped right off of a Disney show.
“No-one ever made a difference by being like everybody else.” is one of the lines from this film. Interesting, because it’s packed with cliches and they made the character of Barnum exactly like every other poor-boy-with-a-dream who grows up to be a workaholic-dad character you’ve ever seen on screen. It was impossible to take it even remotely seriously after the whole Queen Victoria scene. Which would be fine if I thought you weren’t meant to take it seriously but there’s such an absence of discernible irony that I really don’t know. It’s both blander and cheesier than a block of Asda smart price cheddar.
There’s another line in which the supercilious critic sits down next to Barnum and basically congratulates him for including people who look different in his show. I got the feeling that this was a bit of a self-congratulatory moment, that the film makers are honestly patting themselves on the back for including them. As minor characters in a film which is basically all about Hugh Jackman. You know, 80 odd years after Freaks. (There’s a scene in a bar when they all crowd in to offer Barnum emotional support after he’s basically screwed everything up and made them all homeless and penniless when for a second I thought they were all going to start banging their cups on the table and chanting ‘one of us’. Alas not.) None of the minor characters are allowed their own personality. They emote en masse - the group is angry, the group is supportive, the group is laughing, there’s no internal conflict or different perspectives.
The songs are all modern pop types that seem almost like pastiches of pop artists. I don’t mind anachronistic music at all, but it just didn’t work for me here. They’re not too bad if you like that sort of thing. Which I don’t, really. (Although I know even writing this that I’ll probably have one of them stuck in my head tomorrow.) The dancing is even worse. The good bits are third rate Moulin Rouge rip-off and the bad bits are third-rate Rihanna video.
The whole premise of the film seems built around the idea that Barnum is creating something fun for the mass that stuffy critics just don’t get because they don’t know how to have fun and I think the makers of this film firmly believe that’s what they are doing with this film. And you know what, maybe they are. At time of writing this has an 8.0 average on imdb. Maybe I’m just one of the stuffy critics who care about all those boring things like plot, characters, the way a film looks and original ideas and I need to lighten up. Although personally I had more enjoyment watching 12 Years A Slave.
Having said that, I did laugh a lot. But you know the difference between laughing with something and laughing at it? Yeah, it was the laughing at it. Maybe in the end, it’s almost so bad it’s good. I can see it having a cult appeal I suppose.
Worst moment: Toss up between the elephants sadly watching the building burn down and the whoosh sound whenever someone kicks their legs in close up in a dance scene.
Wait, no, it’s when the character who is supposed to be an opera singer lip synchs badly to a bland pop ballad and gets a standing ovation. Made worse by the fact that this is clearly meant to be an Emotional Moment for several of the characters.

My feelings are similar to the director's Dogtooth and The Lobster. I don't quite love these movies, but I have a certain fascination with the style. As far as this one goes, I loved the first half, but then there were parts of the second half when I wondered what the point was. I think the movie would seem silly if it weren't for the superior mood created. It's something different for sure.
This is my favourite by the director but I agree. I also had a problem with how he "satisfies" the curse.

Enjoyed this but I more or less guessed who the 'Limehouse Golem' killer was from the start, it was going to be either one of the two female lovers of John Cree due to the use of poison in his death and then the placing of a severed penis on the book that belonged to the Jewish victim.

A fantastic spectacle. I can never resist a play. The costumes and sets were total eye-candy. I loved Edmondson in The Young Ones and Bottom, so seeing him in this was brilliant. It was interesting to see Luscombe’s interpretation of the gay relationships, he’s great at making the actors show sexual tension. The ending took a very dark tone, which I was not expecting. I absolutely adored all the song and dance numbers, there’s just something about posh men acting like children that’s so entertaining. The lines are delivered brilliantly. The physical comedy (And dirty jokes!) were the highlight of the whole thing, it never failed to make me laugh. The short film that accompanied the cinema broadcast was super interesting aswell.
If you live near Stratford-Upon-Avon, you should totally see this If you have the time.

It's like Rob Zombie's origin aspects of his Halloween remake, for me an origin story of Leatherface isn't really needed. Lili Taylor was excellent as usual and her casting was what got me interested in this film, and the actor who plays the young Leatherface was an interesting choice but apart from that, rather disappointing.

The movie's ambient polution to summarize Barry's psycho struggles annoyed me a little bit, but I enjoyed the movie's script and Sandler's acting was mostly good.
Good points. The acting was good (love Emily Watson's expressiveness), but I'm not a fan of schlemiel/putz stories, even when they're trying to be off-beat. Sandler's character reminded me of Jackie Gleason's "The Poor Slob".
Had I seen this film when it came out I wouldn't have had such high expectations for Phantom Thread. But what was most irritating about the film was it's neurotically busy dreadful music score by Jon Brion. Good Lord.

Persuasion ('95) - 9/10
One of the best Austen adaptations, coming in the '90s Janeitism slew of movies & mini-series & spin-offs. Well made period piece with stately British understatement (the most dramatic point is when a lady falls and bangs her head during a seaside promenade); nicely authentic candle-lighting and street scenes. Also very good acting performances: Ciáran Hinds carries off the hero (ie: best available bachelor) role with aplomb; heroine Anne is played perfectly by Amanda Root, as are the roles of her sisters Mary (self-centred hypochondriac) and Elizabeth (haughty and vacuous snob).

When We First Met

I made the mistake of reading a bit about this film while I was watching it. I had no idea that it was a time travel movie. Did I just make the mistake of telling you too? I'll say no and go with the fact that I'm an idiot as my defense. When We First Met is a romantic comedy that feels like a mix between Groundhog Day and Click and it does a good job of separating itself enough to feel like its own thing.
Noah meets the girl of his dreams, Avery, at a Halloween party. They hit it off instantly having what he calls, the best night of his life. He goes in for the kiss at the end of the night and receives a hug and the moniker "friend". Flash-forward 3 years and she is now getting married to a handsome, athletic all around nice guy Ethan. Depressed, Noah gets drunk at the engagement party and Avery's roommate Carrie has to drive him home. He forces her to drive him to his work instead, which happens to be a bar. In his sorrows he sits in a photo booth, the exact one he and Avery used 3 years ago and wishes he had another chance when they first met. Boom. He time travels to that exact night and is given another chance to woo the girl of his dreams.
What makes this film a little more interesting than the generic 'Groundhog Day' rip-off is that I also mentioned it feels like Click. In that film Sandler's remote is broken on fast forward and he misses years of his life and has to patch together what has happened in his past to understand why he is where he is now. This film incorporates the same thing. Each night Noah tries something different to bag the girl of his dreams and after each night we go forward 3 years and see where they would have ended up in each scenario. In one scenario Noah plays the "bad boy" angle and they make out that night. Flash forward 3 years and he wakes up in bed beside her. He's excited, but when he goes to show affection she turns away. Apparently their relationship has turned into "booty-calls" and nothing more. This is heartbreaking for Noah as he wants a more tangible relationship.
Each time he goes back he tries something new to win her over until he realizes something and does that one thing that makes things "good" in the end. This is telegraphed very early and comes as no surprise when it happens. Adam Devine plays Noah, he was given a chance to re-write aspects of the script to suit his comedy style, most of it works. He's a likable guy in the role and manages to showcase a little bit more than just his comedy chops. This film actually made me realize how bland Alexandra Daddario is. I'm not sure if it is just how the character is suppose to be perceived or her, I hope it's the former because it works in favour of the film. I really liked Shelley Hennig as the roommate. She had a natural feel, despite one common phrase that became annoying. She was also good in the terrible film Unfriended, so I hope to see more from her in the future.
When We First Met is a typical romantic comedy that checks off all the boxes, but does it in a slightly fresh way. I didn't mind it even though I usually hate that kind of stuff. The material is a fresh enough take on an old road map that you forgive some of the short comings.

This isn't a movie I'd normally watch, but I believe anything from director Paul Thomas Anderson is worth watching. From a technical aspect the movie is brilliant. I also thought there were three superb performances even though I didn't think the characters were unlikable enough to be interesting, or likable enough to care about. I had a hard time buying into the romance. I believe the girl was starstruck at first, and the dressmaker curious, but I felt no passion between them. I didn't believe in them as a couple at any point in the movie. I would have liked to have seen the movie go in a slightly different direction somehow. I still enjoyed it for the most part, until the last 15 minutes which I thought were ridiculous.

Black Panther (2018) - rating_3
My problem with a lot of the MCU films is that there are no real surprises, and that everything plays out exactly as expected. Black Panther is no exception.
I was going to give the film a perfectly average score, but it didn't look quite right. There's nothing really wrong with the film, but I'm really tired of everything just being okay. I do like that Black Panther is relatively self-contained, though a passing knowledge of Captain America: Civil War is suggested. I would've liked to see more of the political commentary touched on in the film's second half, though I didn't expect Marvel to really explore it anyway.
The runtime is rather long at 2 hours and 20 minutes, but it never seemed to drag, except maybe during the big climactic battle at the end. The film didn't really have any impact for me, and I have a feeling that I'm going to struggle to remember the details in a few months time. However, I think that fans of Black Panther might get a lot more out of the film than I did, and it certainly provides a better role model for younger audiences than something like Blade does.

The acting might be among the best I've ever seen (and I watch a lot of films). It follows the life of a british and a german soldier from the early 1900's in the south african boer war to WW2.
The actor who plays the german soldier is absolutely fantastic, he also plays in The Red Shoes by the sae directors and is just as good. Anton Walbrook is his name, I've seen him in 2 films and I consider him among my favorite actors.
Deborah Kerr might be my favorite actress ever, she's great in everything she's in and this might be her best performance.

My wife picked this out. I knew it wouldn't be that good but that after I could play the you owe me angle. I'm not sure if this is based on the book, the events that inspired the book, if there's a difference, or if anyone cares. A successful young woman in her 20's looks back at her unorthodox childhood with her siblings. The father is like an alcoholic Captain Fantastic and the mother is spacey and neglectful and only seems to care about her paintings. They live like bums, moving from place to place, squatting, sleeping outside, etc. It was ok but my big issue is that instead of a dark and powerful tale, it comes off as the TV movie of the week. Woody Harrelson is just fine as daddy, while Naomi Watts and Brie Larson do nothing to destroy my mother/daughter fantasy.

Crime caper/comedy where the characters are more interesting than the story. It's similar to the Oceans franchise in that the actual robbery is completely unbelievable but everyone looks like they're having fun so just go with it. 3.5

Always saving the best for last just like the the Drive-In. The jist is this: a couple of women pretend to have car trouble on a remote desert highway to lure in truckers with the intent of hijacking their trucks. Believe it or not, it works like a charm. When the trucker stops the women hop in the cab and one drives while the other fools around with the trucker in the back of the cab. It's very much like Jimmy the Gents operation in Goodfellas in that you don't really mind getting hijacked - you get a little something-something out of it. Anyway, they get rid of the trucker, steal the truck, flip the loot at their truck stop/brothel (of course), eat some chicken fried steak and rinse and repeat. The scam is a well oiled machine until the local mafia wants to get in on the action. The rest of the movie is a war among and between families with car wrecks, seduction, double crossing, truck chases, mother-daughter issues and murder. Overall, it's a fun slice of cheese. Features an appearance from Len Lesser aka Uncle - Did You Hear What Your Cousin Jeffery Is Doing? - Leo.

Cobpyth recommended this because it's eligible for the female director's countdown. It's a coming of age film about a 15 year old girl that focuses on her sexual awakening and experimentation. It's dark and explicit enough that it reminded me just a tad of Von Trier's Nymphomaniac, and I had to look up the age of the actress just so I could be comfortable watching it. Besides that, it has much in common with other coming of age films. This girl has an affair with her mom's boyfriend, and it's shown in a little bit of a different way. Of course he's scum, but he's not really portrayed that way, and she's more the aggressor. Being set in 70's San Francisco is pretty awesome, although it's not fully taken advantage of. I think it's a very good movie that could have been great had it had a little more life at times.

Black Panther - 2018
Man is there a lot to digest in this. I'm going keep it simple and just rattle of some of my thoughts. The movie is very good. But 98% on rotten good? Nah. The Panther is a really cool character. Everyone acted great. MBJ character was really good. His motivations were well fleshed out and understandable. I do feel like they might have underutilized him a tad. Andy Serkis was fantastic but basically wasted in both his appearances as the Klaue in Marvel. A shame. Coogler did wonderful again, you can just feel his voice in everything he does which makes everything he does unique. However he might need more work on his action scenes. Some of them I had no clue what the hell was happening while others really worked. You can definitely feel the social commentary about race in the movie. I think at times it can weigh it down and other times it can lift it. I think it's conflicted, like many African Americans about the US, about the message it wanted to tell. Ultimately I think the end message is the right one. We will see how people will take it, at the very least thought provoking. The movie does have something unique to say but it has a lot of cliche superhero tropes in it. It might be a fairly generic superhero flick if it wasn't for the race card. It has a lot more to say and thought provoking then say Ragnorok, but to me Thor was more entertaining.
Anyways I'd give it a 3.5 out 5. I think it's a high 80s on rotten tomatoes. But naturally everyone is afraid to critique like normal for fear of being labeled a racist. It was well done and I get it will be inspirational. But there have been better superhero flicks, hell WW did the inspirational better to me.

Molly's Game (2017)
Took a chance last night on Molly's Game, and was pleasantly surprised. The real story of Molly Bloom, a prior Olympic skier turned high stakes poker game hostess/banker, must have been a screen writer's dream. And in fact it did get an Oscar nomination for best adapted screenplay.
Jessica Chastain did a journeyman's job of portraying Bloom, although in real life Bloom is actually better looking and has a more affable and engaging personality than does the character in the film. Kevin Costner turned in a nice performance of Molly's father. There were good parts for veterans Bill Camp and Chris O'Dowd. The character of Molly's attorney (in real life James Walden) was given to Idris Elba, evidently to satisfy the rigid Hollywood racial quota system. Elba had a decent performance, but the role seemed unevenly written.
Writer/Director Aaron Sorkin knows how to write an engaging but commercial screenplay. All in all the film is an enjoyable watch. And it's as least as compelling as half the other pictures that were nominated this year for major awards.

Everyone I talked to about The Ritual curbed stomped it with hate, but I really enjoyed it. I've seen some of David Bruckner's other work; I remember watching The Signal (2007) when it came out, but that's all I can really remember about the movie, and I enjoyed his "Amateur Night" segment in V/H/S (2012) (I've been meaning to watch Siren (2016), the feature based on his short).
But I'm a sucker for the "monster in the woods" or the "cult in the woods" horror movie, especially when it's good. I liked that you got to see the monster and the whole cult worshiping it in the woods. Good stuff

I love Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy (2011), so when it was announced that Tomas Alfredson was going to adapt The Snowman (2017), I was excited. Then the oppressively negative reviews starting pouring in, and when Alfredson himself said the movie was rushed, and he didn't get to film everything he wanted to, I skipped the movie in theaters. Despite the bad press, I decided to rent it this past weekend. I remember all the bad reviews that Killing Them Softly (2012) got when it came out, and I loved it, so maybe The Snowman was a victim of hype? Nope, but to be fair I didn't finish the movie. About 30 minutes in I fell asleep, woke up about 40 minutes later and I saw Val Kilmer on screen. That's when I decided to just stop while I'm ahead and turn it off.
I don't feel qualified to rate it since I didn't finish it.

But I loved I Drink Your Blood in all its 70's B-movie, drive-in gross out, glory. The acting is expectedly terrible, but the gore, the soundtrack, and the expressions on George Patterson's face are amazing. I Drink Your Blood will satisfy the pallet of B horror movie connoisseur.

I always wanted to read the Gotham by Gaslight graphic novel, and I've seen the test footage for the video game adaptation that was abandoned and lamented of what could have been, so I went into Gotham by Gaslight (2018) with with hopeful expectations, and was not dissapointed. This is by far better than anything DC is doing with its live action films (well, maybe with the exception of [I]Wonder Woman[/I (2017)). The animation isn't all that great; you'd think they'd spring for expressive animation, but that's my only real complaint with Gotham by Gaslight. I liked the alternative history of Gotham and its characters, the voice acting was good (Battfleck take note: Bruce Greenwood nailed the Batman voice), and I like the whole Jack the Ripper plot. I would easily watch Gotham by Gaslight before I would ever watch Batman vs. Superman (2016) or Suicide Squad (2016) again (Didn't bother with Justice League (2017) yet). DC should invest more into its animated features.

Only The Brave (2017)
Decent but not great. It wasn't a great production and the actors made it feel like a TV drama. I thought the personal lives of the firefighters part wasn't nearly as interesting as the actual fire fighting, which was the good part. I wish there had been more fire fighting and less melodrama. The outdoor scenery was neat and looked to be filmed on location, a big plus. The last 30 minutes is powerful and sad, because it's based on a true story and 19 of the firefighters die when caught by a fast moving fire.

Yes I can. More than one, infact. You implied it was fact so I'm curious where you got that from, Doc. And I'm also curious why you took a stab at skin colour, especially in this century, rather than the fact he's British of all things. That seems to be the colour of the month when it comes to casting choices these days eg if I complained an actor was american in a movie made in my country.
As for the name goof, I was just being a silly scalawag.

Wow, even innocuous Enid Blyton wrote about them.
41982
Blyton was famously racist:
Accusations of racism in Blyton's books were first made by Lena Jeger in a Guardian article published in 1966, in which she was critical of Blyton's The Little Black Doll, published a few months earlier. Sambo, the black doll of the title, is hated by his owner and the other toys owing to his "ugly black face", and runs away. A shower of rain washes his face clean, after which he is welcomed back home with his now pink face.[141]

Blyton was famously racist:
I dont know Enid's full story but isnt that more about mums freaking out about their kids playing in the mud? I know my mother did when I made mud pies before changing out of my dresses after mass on sunday morning. I mean she might have been a horrible xenophobe for all I know, but that's a reference to dirt. Still, it's a stupid thing to put in a kids book, especially if authors do it now when people are so busy flipping out about kids being wrapped in cotton wool.

Yes I can. More than one, infact. You implied it was fact so I'm curious where you got that from, Doc.
...
You left out your reasons why you believe the producers felt it necessary to change the attorney's race from white to black. Do you also believe it would be okay to change the Molly Bloom character's race from white to black?
Several years ago some prominent black actors whined to the press that they believed that not enough blacks were featured in starring roles. Therefore they stated that Hollywood was racist. In reaction the Motion Picture Academy chose to publicly flog themselves, and to make assurances that Hollywood would accommodate the complainers. Ever since then there has been an obvious (unwritten) quota system for blacks in prominent roles, irrespective of whether or not it makes any sense.

I wouldn't associate an "ugly black face" with mud. I mean look at the cover:

I'd also find that an incredible coincidence from the gollywog author. Think she was just a product of her time. She was born in the 19th Century and Britain had a longtime serious problem with racism. The backlash only properly started after she died, no one cared about it beforehand.

Yeah I know. I'm just being naive because I cant stand the thought of such intolerance, and brain washing kids on top of it. I dont know if my mum was a bigot or not because she died when I was young, but I dont recall her ever making a nasty or underhanded remark about my dolly, unlike my dad's 2nd wife who loved to talk about her daughter's 'ugly' wog doll. Oh god she was a nasty old troll. Thankgod for boarding school.

Maybe because he's a great actor for a start. And no, it wouldnt bother me at all if the lead for Molly had a different heritage. She has a different complexion and hair. Didnt you notice that? And what's the quota code for casting again? You havent given me a reference yet, Doc.
That's interesting. I think I've got it all now. Thanks.

Rings
(F. Javier Gutiérrez)

Eating dinner with my in-laws over Easter weekend. Stepping on a Lego barefoot in the middle of the night. Get out of my warm bed and step on a cold floor. Take a dump at a girl's house, then discover there is no toilet paper. Sleep over at a friend's house and accidentally piss myself. These are the things I would rather do than watch Rings.
That darn tape is at it again, this time it goes viral.
Rings is an incoherent, inconsistent mess of a film. The original, Ringu, was scary because of the low-fi aspect to the horror. It's an outdated media source, a VHS tape that shows you horrifying images. Then a little girl calls you saying 7 days, then she finally crawls out of a TV to kill you. That is terrifying and the remake managed to capture most of that inspiration. Now we have to update it, we just have to, kids these days won't want to go see a film about a killer VHS tape. Now we have .mov files that kill people. Who is 'hot' right now? Leonard from Big Bang Theory? Let's throw him in, but lose the glasses and give him some scruff. Yeah, we want him to look cool.
I should have known, I really should have known after the opening sequence on the plane that it was a bad idea to continue watching this train wreck. A poorly executed opening deals with a guy who spells out the entire premise of the movie to a stranger on plane. "I look worried and like crap because I watched this film with bad images on it, then got a phone call saying I'll die in seven days....that was exactly seven days ago!!!" I want to say that I'm paraphrasing, but that quote is 95% accurate. He runs to the bathroom with a bleeding nose and the stranger tells her friend that the guy is crazy. But no, her friend watched it too. She knows what he is going through and runs to ask him if he copied the tape and showed it to anyone. I guess not. Every screen flickers and changes to the well. Even at 30+ thousand feet, you are not safe.
The film then takes the detective route of cursed people trying to find the answers. This is a bad rehash of the first film, adding nothing more to the mythology or the horror. This is a film that wants to cash in on the brand name but doesn't understand the consumer. I haven't seen The Ring 2, but this is worse. This is a film that has no idea where it wants to go, how to get there, who will be along for the ride or what vehicle it will be taking. Rings is bad, it's appallingly bad. I need to stop this review now before I get an aneurysm.

Copying Beethoven 2
Pseudo-historical piece set around the composition of Beethoven's 9th Symphony in the 1820s. Stale feeling to it, with stilted performances & irritating melodrama. Always strange to see 19th Century Germans & Austrians talking in English with faux accents, why not try a film in... German? Plus central character Anna Holtz completely made up, so wtf. Nicely poignant scene where, at the end of the permiere performance, a deaf Beethoven perceives just the muffled rumblings and thuddings of the audience's applause & cheering.

Fruitvale Station. I chose it because I plan on seeing Black Panther soon and I loved Creed, so I wanted to see more from Ryan Coogler.
It was a good movie. 7-8/10. Nothing extraordinary, but the acting was good, the story was a true story and it's fairly short, so it won't steal a lot of your time. I liked it and I'm looking even more forward to watching Black Panther now.
If Black Panther lives up to the hype, then Coogler will certainly have established himself as one of the most interesting directors in the world, IMO.

A very solid noir. The plot is very engaging and has loads of twists and turns you’d never expect. Some brilliant shots and direction from Orson, as to be expected. The action picks up quickly in the second half, making it a lot better than the first. The court scene is a roller coaster of intensity. The finale in the amusement park was fantastic. Orson’s super fake Irish accent is annoying at the start but you get used to it.
Unfortunately, this has a ton of flaws. Hayworth’s character is a complete stone. She has no character or personality whatsoever. She could’ve been placed into a comedic parody film and I wouldn’t be able to tell the difference. She only ever has two facial expressions throughout the entire film: Complete neutrality or concern. I’m guessing this was all because she was only intend to be the ‘sexy poster girl’.
This film is in desperate need of restoration (Maybe they’ve done it already, I dunno I saw this on TV). The sound design is very bad, it’s way too obvious to see when Hayworth has dubbed over her lines, in some scenes she delivers her lines in a way that would be impossible for her to do considering the scene. Character’s audio can be heard very clearly when they are very far away, random bits of film are sped up for no reason, the broken glass effect goes out of frame in the final scene etc. I’m sure this could all be fixed with some hard work.
You may be wondering why I’m rating this so highly despite all the criticisms I’ve given; Well, I rate films on how much I enjoyed them, not on their technical level.

I agree with your points. "Shanghai" is my 4th favorite of Welles directed films, and I placed it at #13 on the Top 25 of the 1940s list.
The film has a strange feel to it, I think a darkness insisted upon by Welles. The story was compelling, if a little far fetched.
You're right about Hayworth's performance as Mrs. Bannister. She did seem distant, although she and Welles had recently become estranged in real life. The platinum hair didn't help. But her role was almost a background against her husband and the story. Welles and Everett Sloane had worked together a lot, and obviously felt very comfortable with each other. Sloane was superb.
The technical stuff was first rate and remarkable, especially for 1947. And of course the mirror scene in the fun house was one of the all time greats, copied many times since. Great editing work!

I think the idea about Mickey Mouse being based on Al Jolson might have come from this. This is Leonard Maltin talking about an upcoming release of Mickey Mouse shorts back in 2002, where he also talks about censorship:
In his introductions, Maltin also puts into historical context some politically incorrect scenes -- a few sequences, for example, satirize Al Jolson's blackface routines -- in the early Mickey Mouse cartoons. Maltin was glad that Disney included those cartoons unedited.
"They understood that it made sense to do it this way, especially in a set that is so clearly aimed at collectors and Disney buffs as well as kids," Maltin says. "I think this is the right way to do it, not to censor, not to chop, but set it in the proper context and let people judge for themselves."
"We didn't want to put them out just naked without some type of explanation," Chapek notes.
Maltin also explains in the introductions that the characters in the Mickey Mouse cartoons often smoke, drank and even spit tobacco, and that the humor was often crude by today's standards.
"The people making these were not sophisticated people," Maltin says. "Walt was not a sophisticated person. I think he became one, but he wasn't [early in his career] and neither were his colleagues. A lot of them came from simple backgrounds. I call it barnyard humor and that was their stock in trade. Showing someone's long johns and pantaloons was funny stuff."
The link to the page is here and it's the only connection I could find about Mickey and Al Jolson:

Someone mentioned that this feels very much like After Hours and I have to agree. There is a sense of lunacy to the elemental happenstance that Pattinson finds himself in. I was along for the ride from the beginning and treated to a shockingly well maintained performance that has me re-examining his entire career.
Two brothers rob a bank, but during their getaway the dye pack in the bag explodes and covers them in pink paint dust. Now with a change of plans, they try to flee the cops surrounding the area. During a chase, Nick get captured. Now Connie must somehow come up with some bail money to get him out. $10K short, his wild night is just beginning.
A visually chaotic piece, the Safdie brothers bring together an edgy narrative that likes to take twists and turns, finding new ways to put their main character in new predicaments. There is something a bit more gritty, dirty or visceral to this film than the typical Hollywood crime drama. Good Time manages to zone in on an area that makes it unique enough to be memorable.
Pattinson continues to try and rip apart his Twilight persona. I think he has successfully done that, with his performance here being the best of his career. I know people who are like Connie, constantly forcing people to do things with their desperate nice guy attack. You don't really feel threatened by him, but at the same time you're scared to get on his bad side. It's a performance that walks the line perfectly. He's so embarrassingly desperate that he becomes engaging throughout the entire film.
To say I had a "good-time" watching this film is a cliched, cringe worthy ending to a review. So I'll leave it at that.

Waste of potential. The film begins with a good premise, so it falls into the racial melodrama we've seen thousands of times in American cinema since D.W. Griffith. There is a sense of 'epic' in aspects of war that are never addressed convincingly, the friendship between Jamie and Ronsel yields the only good parts of this film, but unfortunately the outcome of that friendship falls once again into the cliché, artificial, and racial melodrama without density or impact.

Beast of Burden (Jesper Ganslandt): Swedish director Ganslandt makes his international debut here starring Daniel Radcliffe as Sean, a pilot who is tasked to do one more assignment as a drug mule for a cartel. However, he finds himself conflicted with the cartel, a DEA agent who offers him a deal, and his long suffering wife. The film mostly revolves around Radcliffe in this cockpit juggling one phone call after another with beats of flashbacks that lead up to where we are today. Grace Gummer plays Radcliffe's wife and Pablo Schreiber is the DEA agent who offers Sean a deal. Pretty intense film.

7 Guardians of the Tomb - Think Tomb Raider meets the scarabs from The Mummy only instead of scarabs, you have the funnel-web spiders. Definite B-movie fare but is actually not bad either.
Hilarious. Almost turned it off when they got to the spiders but it was so bad it was good. Not so bad it was good like the vigilante great white in The Shallows but still, awesome popcorn entertainment.

Politics...the extreme left is running a smear campaign against the film. Film can't have complicated characters anymore. Art is supposed to be reflective of the human condition but certain people feel films have to send a message.

When I saw A Perfect Murder in the theater back when it was a new release, I couldn't understand why I seemed to know the plot of the movie if I had never seen it before. Then about 3/4 into the movie, I finally realized that it was a remake of Alfred Hitchcock's Dial M for Murder.

A little partial to this title because I've always been a huge Jim Carrey fan. Decent psychedelic suspense movie, pretty entertaining. Some of the original motion picture score is reminiscent of the late Tony Scott's Man on Fire or Deja Vu Score's, respectively.

Game Night. Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams are a competitive couple whose weekly "game night" gets upped a notch by Bateman's show-off older brother, promising them an interactive real-world murder-mysteryesque game involving his own abduction. Unfortunately some real world thugs gatecrash the party and things do not go quite as planned... This modern comedy has a similar style premise to the 1997 Bill Murray comedy The Man Who Knew Too Little, albeit nowhere near as good. By modern comedy movie "standards" it's not bad, and less gross-out rubbish than most, but it's overly long, with too many endings, and it doesn't milk the premise anywhere near as well you'd think.

Really enjoyed this documentary which focuses on doping within sports. It’s almost two films in one which comes about by accident/ luck half way in.
I’m not certain the film would have been as good or hard hitting if it were not for the dramatic turn of events which, understandably, forced the film to go in a different direction.

Justice League
(Zack Snyder)
2
I'm a fan of The Avengers and was surprised how Whedon was able to pull it off. Watching Justice League has given me a new appreciation for Marvel, even though I already knew the difficulties it faced. Seeing how atrociously bad Justice League was thrown together is actually really depressing. I don't want these movies to fail, this isn't some Marvel VS DC fan boy fight. These are films that should be fun and entertaining. Justice League is neither those things, nor is it thought provoking or gritty or...anything really. Its just there. Snyder goes for a darker sense of realism masked in a fantasy built world and fails. This film is bad on so many levels.
The world mourns Superman. His death has signaled a clearing for Steppenwolf (the band) to come to our world in search of three cubes that contain unlimited energy. Merging these cubes will create mass destruction. Batman begins his internship for people with abilities. He needs a fish, a kid with who needs Ritalin and a terminator. He finds those people rather quickly, we know very little about them and then they fight faceless flying creatures and someone's computer rendering of a giant person with a helmet.
Okay, so Justice League opens with some kid's smart phone recording Superman saying something inspirational. Then immediately cuts before he says something REALLY inspirational. We are now in Gotham with Batman. This opening looks straight out of a comic book. The shots, the lighting, the choreography all look spectacular. Snyder is without a doubt a gifted visual director. The awesomeness of this opening is ruined when we are then introduced to a flying alien creature that Batman lunges onto. The creature self destructs when caught, leaving behind three square marks. Why? I have no idea. But Batman has seen this before and decides it's finally time to get the team together.
Introduce Wonder Woman who has to stop some terrorists from blowing up some people. This sequence is a re-hash of her fighting Nazi's in Wonder Woman. Slow -motion here, deflect bullets there and look good while doing it. There is some tension though because there is a countdown clock. This is the only real scene of tension in the film, as everything else fails to feel real or relatable. A second sequence that was kind of fun, but again ruined by how fake it all looked, was when Steppenwolf first emerges. He goes to the Amazonian place to retrieve the first cube. The Amazonian women make an effort to keep it away from him, people die and Steppenwolf makes off with it. A nice short story involving the boxes is told, we see that Amazonian women are protecting one, Atlantis is protecting one and then a bunch of dudes buried one somewhere. Interesting that we decided to keep all 3 boxes on earth instead of different planets. We see a Green Lantern in a flashback sequence helping fight Steppenwolf, but let's not give one to them to protect. Let's not separate them all over the galaxy, let's keep all of them here on Earth. One easy spot for him to teleport to and grab.
Steppenwolf....who? Here is guy so boring, so bland, so obviously fake looking with terrible CGI that it was hard to take anything he says or does seriously. People complained about the third act in Wonder Woman, that third act is this whole film. People flying through the air, hitting others, sending them flying back and vice versa. It's pedestrian. I thought we were past this garbage. This isn't exciting action, it's a lame video game cut scene that makes no sense. Yes, the CGI in this movie is terrible. If it's not 90's videogame graphics Steppenwolf, it's bad green screen. Never once did I believe these people were anywhere real in the final act. It felt like I was watching a Star Wars prequel, they stood out from the obviously fake background that it is distracting. Even in the frickin' batcave it looked bad. Don't get me started on Stache-Gate.
If you were worried that the film would feel like an incoherent mess due to Whedon taking over from Snyder, you're right. This film was all over the place, felt rushed, reshoots were completely obvious. A scene where Bruce Wayne recruits The Flash is fine, then it goes on a little too long for a Whedonesque joke that you can clearly tell was shot after the fact. The lighting doesn't even match up for crying out loud. The plot is another alien being wanting to destroy earth BS. A forced sequence to add more action has Superman show up and be evil. Props to Cavill for making evil Superman something I want to see in the future though.
Spoiler territory.
How bad is your climax scene that Superman just shows up and easily saves the day. The film literally has Superman fly in, not break a sweat,
throw some one-liners around and movie over. This is bad script writing, plotting,
character, action, everything that is bad is in this scene. Bad....bad bad bad.
Okay, what else, what else??? The acting? At least Ezra Miller seems to be having fun. Along with Jason Momoa, these two look like they actually liked being in this film. One has comedic timing down very well, the other does not. Maybe it's the writing for Aquaman, but all his jokes fell flat. The rest of the cast looks utterly bored. Amy Adams, I feel bad for you. Ben Affleck, he desperately wants to leave this franchise. Henry Cavill has no material to work with. Ray Fishcer is a new-comer and doesn't really show anything in this film to be noteworthy. He plays a Frankenstein's Monster type character, but you never feel his pain. He's too busy hacking into things for plot convenience. Each of these new characters are given minimal backstory. This is a mistake. DC rushed this film, it's evident. They needed their own films to build an emotional connection, don't assume that because they are comic book characters we automatically know and love them. This is lazy. This review is all over the place, must like the film.
I don't know what state this universe will be in now. It's in shambles. It's weird to think that Black Panther in one week has made more money than Justice League did in it's entire run, domestically. This to me shows that the DCEU needs to re-examine itself. Have The Flash do something weird with the timelines and reboot the series. Seriously, this is your best chance to redeem yourselves because if Justice League is any indication of future installments, I'm out.

Darkest Hour (2017)
Good-ish but not really good. I liked it more than I expected up until the point he goes to the underground and then it just drowns itself in cheese. Oldman's performance is good, the sort of larger than life, grandstanding, speeches and shouting at people type role.

The Shape of Water (2017)
Incredible film. Looks simply amazing. The lighting, the production design, the colours - all stunning. The story is absorbing, the characters are vivid and it has nearly everything I could ever want from a film. My only criticism would be that the relationship between Elisa and the creature could have been developed a bit more to be really convincing - I expected a bit more communication between them.
