Very highly enjoyable film with properly built up characters (thus the ending seemed touchable)...one or two things could have been done or thought better...

SPECTRE was awesome. Lots of fun. It had me thinking. I really am a big fan of Daniel Craig. I think it deserves 4.5/5 for the genius way that the director, Sam Mendes, is relaying what he thinks about Bond as a character and a world class spy to the audience. I think it was incredible from start to finish. There was one scene, however, where Bond is being tortured by his nemesis, Blofeld, played by Christoph Waltz, which was too long for what it was meant to be, but that can be overlooked by the sincerity of the other scenes. Great acting. Lovely "Bond-girl" played by Lea Seydoux, and interesting plot twists near the end where James Bond is faced with a choice to save Seydoux's character, Swann, from a building with explosives in it. Overall, if I wanted to see this again, I would probably do it without regret. It is re-watchable and fairly entertaining if you are already invested in the franchise, emotionally speaking. The fun parts are fun, and even the stupid stuff is easy to laugh off. Some scenes, such as the one where Blofeld is in a dark, concealed location, sitting at a table, with many bad guys listening to him talk about his plans and desire for domination come off as a lazy job at telling the story--in other words, this one scene (and maybe one other) felt like no one behind the making of the film cared that we've seen evil masterminds doing this forever on screen! Yet, it is the collection of love that a lot of us have for the franchise...and for rooting for one guy who looks at the odds and doesn't care how they are tilted against him, as long as he thinks he can do the job for himself and his bosses, that makes everything balance out appropriately. Good watch. :D

A well-made film all around. It wasn't as intense as I thought it might be, short of Ruffalo's facial expressions. Only drawback is a twist at the end that left me scratching my head a bit. I either missed something or it just didn't work.

Ant-Man (2015)
http://i.imgur.com/fjFxhne.jpg
A movie that could have been something bigger...
Man, what wasted potential this was. First off they should have never argued against Edgar Wright; but he was right to leave instead of making Hollywood garbage. Really though, I ant-icipated this to be amazing when I heard Edgar Wright was on board, but though you see hints of what could have been, this was instead made into your typical comic book blockbuster.
Surprisingly, there was not much tense action in this until the last 30 minutes... and here, it got pretty damn awesome. Why in the hell didn't they have more fun with the scale of things? There was some in the start, but towards the end it was really fun and action-packed delivered with a glimpse in the eye. I love the self-awareness and I'm sure there had been more of that if Wright had stayed on.
Anyways, this movie was not as good as I hoped, but it had some fun highlights and hints of greatness - especially the small scale action (never thought I should say that). So yeah, wasted potential but still pretty fun overall...

Creed (2015)
When you go into a movie with extremely high expectations, you're bound to leave a little disappointed. Unfortunately for Creed, that was the case for me. Maybe it was because I was tired from a long day at work, or maybe it was the fact that a group of idiots sitting behind me kept making noise throughout the film, or maybe it was the movie itself that was a bit overrated. I'm not sure. All I know is that the movie's rave reviews and 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes seemed like an exaggeration.
Let me start by talking about Stallone's performance. It's the best thing about the movie for sure. Even without the award nomination buzz, Stallone is in his comfort zone here playing the one beloved role he can play naturally in Rocky Balboa. Michael B. Jordan was okay for the most part. Nothing too amazing. It's just that I never felt that I really cared for him the way I cared for Rocky in the first movie, and that's saying something. If the main underdog of the movie isn't pulling on your heart-strings and not making you want to pump your fists when he's preparing to face the champ or throwing the first punch...Houston, we have a problem. Again, maybe it was just me on a long tiring day with some distraction behind me that made me not feel a certain way. In other words, I want to give Creed the benefit of the doubt and maybe, unlike Rocky or even Creed's shot at the title, give it a second chance.
Or maybe somebody else who watched it can persuade me to see what I didn't see in the film.
For now I give the movie 3 out of 5. I know it's too low for a movie that's been hyped up to be huge, but, like Tessa Thompson's character tells Adonis Creed, I need to keep it 100.

Great documentary. Very inspiring and relateable, and in many ways sad too. Here's someone with great passion for films and a dream to become a successful filmmaker himself, and despite all the criticism and setbacks he receives there seems to be nothing able to stop him from believing in himself, a really heart warming story of determination. Loved editing and soundtrack too, the mixture of real life human content and film related scenes really worked, it felt like a love letter to the art of actual film making too, getting out their, recording sounds, hiring local actors, multiple takes, hours in the editing room etc.

Dune 3 BBC had the 4 hour version and it took me a few days to knock it out. I remember my brother having a five-hour version on VHS and this one seemed to be missing a few scenes with the Baron being his twisted self and made me wonder what else was edited out. And sadly, this wasn't widescreen so my enjoyment definitely dropped. (Regardless of the severe overacting that saturates this movie, of which I am very well aware of from past viewings of the theatrical 2 hour version) :D

Tremors 5: Bloodline (2015) 2.5
With news of Kevin Bacon's Tremors TV Reboot coming out I forgot I didn't post my rating for the newest Tremors that went straight to DVD and Netflix (Red Flag right there). Bloodline is much better than 3 and 4 but that doesn't make it a good movie. Gross as Gummer is always entertaining but the movie itself wasn't good. It is sad that this series will never get the funding that could make it great (Granted the first one was fantastic and it was done for cheap in 90, and the new TV show coming has Kevin Bacon backing it so it could get much more funding). And Jamie Kennedy wasn't terrible like I was expecting him to be, so there's another positive I guess.

As a single take movie like Colombian thriller PVC-1 (2007) or Uruguayan horror flick The Silent House (2010), this German thriller-drama also does a very commendable job to film the entire thing in one continuous shot, particularly when the running time is 134 minutes!! And it took only 3 attempts to film the movie (source: IMDB). Surely the director & his team deserve a big round of applause for that but though it was pretty nicely done with a good cast & a fine, interesting story but near the end it kind of made me eagerly anxious about when it was going to end! It'd be better if they could kept it within 100 minutes.

Cul de sac (1966)
Like a cross between Straw Dogs and Polanski's very own Knife in the Water, Cul De Sac has a pair of criminals, Dickie and Alfie, badly wounded and on the run. They find themselves stranded with their only refuge in the form of a nearby castle. As we are introduced to the castles owners, George and Teresa, it is fairly obvious that they have their own faults and issues, with George totally henpecked by his young French and very flirtious wife Teresa. From the moment that Dickie rather carelessly announces his arrival, a strange relationship develops between the three that blurs the line between a comedy and a psychological drama.
The starring trio of Donald Pleasance, Francoise Dorleac and Lionel Stander all work so well together and its fascinating to watch this become almost like a character study of (very odd) human behaviour. When the couple's friends unexpectantly arrive, things get really interesting and at the same time absolutely hilarious, in perticular the garden party. Polanski's ability to add dark humour to a serious situation here is superb as this seemingly home-invasion becomes wonderfully odd and quirky.
From what ive seen from Polanski's films, he can be a bit of an acquired taste but so far Ive really liked what Ive seen. What Ive gathered so far from his work is a common theme of isolation (mostly) which always interests me.

http://fantasticfest-site.s3.amazonaws.com/films/33326/jodorowskysdune1__large.jpg
My only issue here is that I do not have much interest in Dune or Alejandro Jodorowsky. I'm not a fan of Jodorowsky's El Topo or The Holy Mountain, and I haven't read or seen Dune. I remember when Dune came out, and all the backlash it received. Who knows, maybe I would have seen Dune if this guy directed it. After all, he envisioned Pink Floyd to do the music, and Mick Jagger, Orson Welles, and David Carradine to star. I enjoyed this documentary, and it's probably excellent for anyone who's interested in it's subject matter.

It's not just the Emperor who got a new groove...
Even with a familiar storyline, Disney really changed up their style and approach with this film, but though this buddy comedy with a man and a lama isn't lame, I mainly see it as mindless entertainment that keeps me watching but makes me a little sceptical over how tacky, nonsensical, hectic and dumb it actually is...
YES, I'm able to have fun and I really did with this film, but the story, the themes, the music and partly the characters are nothing to dance and shout about It has one good thing going for it, but the rest goes up and down hill on a journey that admittedly only gets better as it moves along. In the end, children will love it and won't even care, but to me there is something missing.

Okay, okay, it's a series, but still I watched all the episodes one after the other.
So, overall, this is the definition of a cult series. The episodes are just plain awesome and the soundtracks are beautiful especially one called Majestic Solaris (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tHquNcGMQWo).
Of course, there are a few plot holes throughout the series, but it's still an awesome job the creators did with inserting futuristic technology with ancient people. Also the animation is the best. The very first episodes are very childish and it's obvious that the show was originally intended for young audiences. By half-series, the show gets really deep into mature subject, and although there's no blood, the last episodes are mainly carnage...which makes up for an awesome ending.
So, I highly recommend this series for anime fans and adventure also...mainly because I grew up watching this series. There's a season 2...but I haven't watched it completely yet. Still, with all the flaws, it deserves a rating_5

Oh... Final Girls (2015)... every single thing which I hate about horror & comedies. Full of cliches / bad acting / stupid perverse jokes / PG-13 / Some out of place cgi / unlikable charactersApart from the main characters who find themselves in the 'film', the others in the Camp Bloodbath slasher were suppose to be quite rubbish(although saying that they were not that bad) when it comes to acting like it is in a lot of slasher films of the 80s. The group of friends, their acting was fine and dandy and hardly bad.
As for the clichés, well yes it's going to have clichés in as the characters have gone into an 80s slasher film and Final Girls is a parody/spoof type film. Perverse jokes? everything in it was mild compared to a lot of comedies.
Agree with the CGI, some of it was a bit off, especially near the start. Unlikable characters? apart from one or two I thought they were some of the nicest characters I've seen in a horror/slasher film.

Excellent addition to the Rocky saga. While the plot is fairly predictable, the acting definitely makes up for it. Stallone gave one of his best performances since the original film. Michael B. Jordan also did a great job. Would like to see another sequel or two to see where they can take Jordan's character. I'd rank it as my third favorite film in the series behind Rocky and Rocky II.

A fine documentary but it could have been slightly better if it was shortened by thirty minutes. The first forty five minutes felt like they had a lot of filler to me for some reason.

Eight Catalan Surnames (known as Spanish Affair 2)
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/5/5a/Ocho_apellidos_catalanes_poster.jpeg
It's a spanish comedy movie (this one is the sequel of the first one which I did not see..) the movie is about the different kind of spanish people, as they are pretty different depending the zone you live in. And it has a bit of romance in it, a bit a lot.
It was kinda funny at first, then after an hour or so, it got boring and hard to put up with, I almost wanted to walk out of the cinema. At the same time I wanted to see how it ends, so I stayed. The final was comedic too and made me giggle so there's a point for that hahah
All in all I'm not a fan of the spanish cinema, and I can't say this movie changed my mind.
Had it's funny moments but not worth the ticket

Waiting to do this until after a few hours sleep cost this movie almost a whole popcorn from me. I love these types of movies, and this was definitely watchable, but some reflection has made me realize just how stale it all was. Nothing unexpected and nothing that stood out. Three actors I love and none of them made their mark. Liam Neeson is the star, and at his age, I think he needs to reinvent himself quick. He was fine in this, but I don't think his talent is one-dimensional enough to be playing a variation of the same character over and over again. Watching Ed Harris was like watching someone play Ed Harris. He was ok, but the magic is gone. After Jurassic World, this is the second Vincent D'Onofrio performance I've seen this week that was bland. I think he's one of the great supporting actors, but he should be playing characters that have some kind of edge to them. The biggest problem with the movie is it's lack of identity and style. It's way too forgettable. It also goes on about 15 minutes too long. I'm being harsh on the movie because I did enjoy it, but it's one of those movies that left me saying, come on, you've got to do more.

Attack The Block (2011) 3.5
I haven't watched this in a while but I did again and it was still really good. Only movie I've seen John Boyega in (I don't know if he is gonna talk in his English accent in Star Wars or not but his accent is REALLY strong in this movie, I wonder if he's toned it down), and he was pretty good. Nick Frost is good and funny like he always is. And the rest of the cast is good as well. The effects actually aren't terrible either. Nice little scifi movie
I have seen Inside out
I will give it 9 out of 10.
Also want to say about Hitman: Agent 47 it will get 8 from Me

Overall, it's an exiting, bone-crunching, head-smashing, entertaining bloodbath.
I don't usually watch horror/scary stuff, but the trailer didn't make it seem so scary. So I watched all the episodes today.
It was awesome! I liked the fact that there is CGI but practical effects also. They're equally distributed throughout every episode, so...it's kinda awesome. There also is a lot of nasty stuff (mostly gory scenes) and some scenes including exorcisms...or attempted exorcisms.
I did enjoy it but I wouldn't say it's perfect. Still, I give it a rating_4_5

The Human Condition Part III: A Soldier's Prayer 4.5-
And so my 9 1/2 journey comes to an end.
This final part, in my opinion, is the strongest of the entire trilogy. It's a death-haunted piece of work and a fitting finale to a colossal piece of filmmaking. This entire series is the tale of one man, but it is also a tale of the entire Japanese nation.

http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcT62KkCbfLp6HQHroqyqOsewVDd6rdymPlQ7DktB7KT-BLyptOC
Overall...it was better the first time I watched it.
When I look at it again, I realize it's just a bunch of clichés and cheesy dialogues that sometimes are completely unnecessary and don't make any sense.
Don't get me wrong on this one: I am a Christian and I support the message this movie delivers. Still, it was a very bad delivery. From the girlfriend who's a strong Christian that suddenly becomes against the idea of defending God (and therefore finishes her relationship with the main character) to the unrealistic and unnecessary death of the teacher, this movie really was a lousy film.
This movie really disappointed me and even sometimes got me confused because of its unnecessary dialogue and its fast shift between stories. I was expecting a movie mostly based on debate over God's existence with a thrilling ambient. Well, let's just say this isn't it. There are only three "debates" and parallel stories that lead up to the typical happy ending and musical ending Christian movie cliché.
Greatly disappointed, I give this movie a rating_2_5

Tomorrowland- 2015
My interest was peaked when this was announced. An orginal blockbuster film not based on any pre exsisting properties or spinoff of anything. (yes I know the park at Disney but an original idea, gotta market it somehow I guess) Plus it has my boy Clooney in it. He has made some of my favorite movies ever (O Brother, Up In The Air, Out Of Sight). He always gets at least a view from me.
The movie overall was really well acted and visually beautiful. I mean some of the scenes are breathtaking. The first 2/3 of the movie is really interesting and captivating, even if I wasn't completely sold on the story. However the 3rd act completely falls on it's face. I am still not sure what the hell happened at the end of the movie. It's very hard to follow what the hell is going on. They have this big Tomorrowland that they don't really utilize or give you much back story either. There is an awkward scene between Clooney and a child actor that probably seemed good on paper but was awkward, at least to me, in execution. I feel like the main girl wasn't really need in the end anyways. It struggles to find who the protagonist is. The 3rd act really messes the movie up even if it is an inspirational message it's trying to send.
I really did enjoy the movie until the 3rd act lost me. I don't know just didn't work for me. Oh well

Been on a bit of a Norma Shearer kick lately. Three films with her here:
Idiot's Delight (1939)
Norma and Clark Gable are teamed in this pre-WWII flick, wherein Clark is walking the streets for jobs and gets one as a psychic's assistant. Unfortunately, the "psychic" is a lush and can't remember her cues. Norma tries to help her from the side of the stage but ends up ruining the act. Norma apologizes to Clark and they have a little fling then part ways. Years later, Clark is traveling in Switzerland with his six blonde dancer/singers and stops at a Swiss hotel. When they are temporary refused passage beyond the Swiss border because of tensions in the surrounding countries, Clark makes a deal to perform his act with the gals in exchange for accommodations. There are various characters at the hotel, including the great Charles Coburn as a cancer researcher, the equally great Edward Arnold as a German munitions manufacturer, a super Burgess Meredith, who knows what's going on with the German soldiers at the hotel, and best of all, Norma Shearer, who appears as a blonde Russian who accompanies the German industrialist. Clark thinks she's the same woman he romanced years earlier (or is she?). He attempts to find out throughout the movie.
One thing I thought odd was that there was an airfield at the base of the cliff where the hotel sat and German planes took off frequently. This seems to clash with what is known about the Swiss allowing such bases in their country for either the Axis or the Allies. But some people did use Swiss air space for flying over, with the Swiss shooting down anyone who violated their neutrality. But if they didn't include this airfield in the movie, the drama would be lessened I suppose. One of the most entertaining things in the movie is Clark "dancing" and "singing" to Puttin' on the Ritz at the hotel. If you can find this clip, look it up just for laughs. All said, this was a very entertaining movie. TCM showed it with two endings filmed, one for the international crowd, one for the domestic audience. The international ending is much better. But still, fascinating to see both.

We Were Dancing (1942)
Norma Shearer and Melvyn Douglas are loads of fun in this comedy which starts at an engagement party for Shearer, who is found making out with Douglas on the veranda, thus busting up her engagement. She and Douglas run off together, and using their descent from aristocrats, become professional guests at the houses of rich people who like to rub elbows with the elite. They host Shearer and Douglas for free, till it's time to move on, which they do, to the next rich hosts they've read up on. It's only a matter of time before Shearer bumps into her ex-fiance and Douglas into his ex-girlfriend. There's jealousy, the danger of exposure, courtroom shenanigans, and gambling, all in the name of fun. Nice to see these old-timers in their prime, playing for laughs all the way.

The Barretts of Wimpole Street (1934)
The story of the romance of Elizabeth Barrett and author/poet Robert Browning, which almost didn't happen due to the interference of Barrett's domineering, bitter father. He's played by Charles Laughton, who is super as always and every time he makes you feel a bit sorry for his character, he pulls back and shows what a mean bastard he is. Shearer does a fine job as the sickly Barrett and Fredric March is fine as the opinionated Browning who refuses to give up, despite Laughton's edict that none of his nine children (who are all adults) will marry. Very good drama. Shearer was nominated for Best Actress by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences for this film, but Laughton should have been nominated for Best Actor. He is great in this movie.

And, a third in a series that I've come to enjoy quite a bit:
Taken 3 (2015)
Different but still entertaining third installment in the series with Liam Neeson as Bryan Mills, the ex-government agent who in the previous films, was called upon to save one or two members of his family. This time, his ex-wife, played by Famke Janssen is murdered and her body left at MIlls' apartment to frame him.
So Mills has to avoid the police and the foreign criminals who are after him also, all the time trying to prove his innocence and flush out the real bad guys. Of course he uses his "particular set of skills" along the way, including hand-to-hand combat, shooting, torture, causing mayhem on the freeway by driving his car like a jet plane, etc. This movie, unlike the first two, at least in story, plays more like a remake of "The Fugitive," with Neeson in the Harrison Ford role and Forest Whitaker in the Tommy Lee Jones role. Whitaker is particularly good as the somewhat laid-back detective who snaps a rubber band around his wrist, maybe out of nervousness, maybe not---you'll eventually find out. And he tends to smile while checking out where Neeson has just been, figuring out what Neeson is doing or why he's just done something. Maggie Grace is good as Neeson's daughter, who is understandably sad and angry that her mother has been murdered. She blames her step-dad, played by Dougray Scott, who takes over the role played by other actors in the previous films.
The films should end here because there's seemingly nowhere else to go, but who knows? At the end of the day, this was a fine shoot-em-up and had me guessing a bit at the reasons for the murder.

I've seen Dirty Harry yesterday because I've read the book by Robert Graysmith about the Zodiac killer a few weeks ago. In the book, Graysmith said that Dirty Harry is very faithful to the criminal case?! I don't understand why he said that, this isn't the case at all. I was also interested in this movie because it launched the Italian sub-genre the poliziottesco.
I'm a little surprised that this movie became a cult film. The pace is very unequal, this stuff of peeping Tom is badly developed. And frankly... Clint Eastwood has always the same facial expression. The Italian director Dino Risi said about him in Leone's films : "Clint Eastwood has two facial expressions : one with the cigar and the other without the cigar"

Documentary in which a few people discuss what they believe are hidden meanings in Stanley Kubrick's The Shining. Up until about halfway, I was very interested and somewhat fascinated. From then on, I settled into the belief that I was listening to a bunch of crap. I still moderately enjoyed the movie, only because The Shining is a favorite of mine.

This Property Is Condemned - 5/10
The entire film could have been 10 minutes. Didn't care for the pace, the typical 30's southern exaggeration - this "drama" kinda reminds me of a musical.

It's a kind of modern film noir, a wandering sometimes oniric, influenced - I suppose - by the French New Wave. There's a voice all the time, it's weird and it makes me think to the Nouveau Roman and especially to Michel Butor's La Modification (which was written in the second person, "You"... and which creates an identification between the reader and the character). Pretty interesting but it won't stay in my annals :D

Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation
http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQ2QqFVBlMs6FLqvr_q_NiiylRGzbt47aGTDCHdEEOZqp8zclxe
Overall, Ghost Protocol almost got kicked out of its statement as the best Mission:Impossible.
From what the trailers showed, I expected the movie to be CGI-filled and to be a major flop. Turns out it's the opposite. Of course, there was CGI, but in very limited amount and was perfectly blended-in with the images to make it more realistic. The acting was very good and I personally enjoyed the scene where Simon Pegg nearly screams at Cruise to let him choose to follow him. I thought it gave a more important role to Pegg than previousely. The action sequences were masterfully crafted and, for once since the burj khalifa scene, things really did seem impossible, especially the scene underwater. The use of practical effects and locations is not to be forgotten either. Cruise really DID hang from that plane and really DID hold his breath for 4 mins. There were a lot of good shots, cinematography, and, to say the truth, this movie was just almost perfect.
Almost...that explains my only flaw: a part of the ending and the villain. Of all the Mission:Impossible I've seen, that is 4/5, the villain is always someone smarter but not physically challenging, that is maybe except in Ghost Protocol. In this one, the same thing happens. At thee end, the villain says he needs Cruise alive but for no reason whatsoever starts shooting at him later on. I did get a little cheesed when the final showdown of the girl vs the bone doctor happened. I mean, it was kinda predictable: The girl fights the guy, ching ching ching, the girl gets a few ounches, cuts him a little, jumps on him and kills him. The end. That wasn.t really challenging to her either. I hoped McQuarrie would fix that by either killing thee girl or, that would've been more aawesomely unexpected yet. kill Ethan (you may wonder why this is in a spoiler box, but by telling this, you know what happens).
Anyway, it's a very good movie and makes it into my "2015 best of" list. I give it a rating_4_5

http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSsLkIt9uQef38kjAmgZ4Df6pJ0vRBRIb91k8BjNGtlChx6H0KL
Overall, it was just a fun, anti-clichés, horror-comedy film.
In this movie, a horror story is told the other way: instead of the woodchoppers being the bad guys, the "bad guys" become the teenagers who misjudge them and are persuaded that they are psycho-killers. This movie offers stuff deeper than any horror-comedy would normally deliver. There is heart, joy, sadness (like...real sadness...not only a random teen girl crying around...) and even at some point romance. The movie really made me care for the main misunderstood characters, especially Dale who's just a man that's never been able to grow from his childhood shyness.
There are also a few scares but what really fits it in as a good movie are the anti-clichés and the comedy. I gave this movie a 9.8/10, and since there's nothing like it here, I'll give it a rating_5

Overall, a little disappointed.
I saw some clips of this movie and reviews where people said it was a pioneer in cinematic action films. Well, I watched it expecting that...and in fact it is...but only in the action SCENES, not the movie overall. Far from being the greatest action movie ever, this movie still has some accurate moves and incredible CGI for its time, but some of the dialogue is really REALLY cheesy and the acting isn't that good either.
All fabulous moves and bullet-time apart, this movie isn't something really awesome and didn't make me feel paranoid because of its plot (which at some moments is kinda weak) and its idea. Instead, I was quite disappointed watching it, that's why I give it a rating_3_5

The Sheepman (1958)
Glenn Ford and Shirley MacClaine are the headliners in this comic Western, with the comedy mostly coming in the first half, with Western action in the second half. Ford is the sheepman of the title, bringing his flock to graze in cattle country which of course angers the cattlemen. But the way Ford establishes himself in the first half is aces. He asks who the toughest guy in town is and proceeds to beat him down, finds the town "character" who knows everyone in town and pays him to spy on them for him, and basically gets the drop on everyone who is against him because he's that smart. Things don't go as well for him in the second half as the bad guys disrupt his way of doing things. But rest assured that Ford will get the better of them before all is said and done.
Ford is smooth and laid-back, never shouting or brash, just doing what he says he'll do and doing it well; MacClaine is fine and cute as the fiance of the town cattle baron, played straight and evil by Leslie Nielsen. Nielsen also happens to be an old friend of Ford, but they clash. Great character actor Mickey Shaughnessy is fun as the town tough guy who is always getting embarrassed and shown up by Ford; Edgar Buchanan is a hoot as the "town character" that Ford picks out immediately; Slim Pickens has a small but funny role as the town sheriff who goes fishing every time trouble starts in town. At 85 minutes, it's a lean picture, directed by the talented George Marshall, with beautiful Colorado scenery to behold.

Repo Man (1984)
Crazy, off-the-wall, whackadoodle, off-kilter (use your own adjective here after watching) piece of cinema. Emilio Estevez is a new employee at an agency that, naturally, repossesses cars. Harry Dean Stanton is his mentor, but Estevez soon finds out that Stanton and everybody in the place are grumpy, out for themselves, violent, etc. The main "MacGuffin" of the film is a Chevy Malibu that has something mysterious in its trunk. Even though it's the main object of the repo people and the government, all through the movie the car and its driver pass right by the pursuers as they get involved in some other crazy business. That's as good as I can describe the movie. Everything is crazy, there are loads of coincidences, and the movie never flags. I wouldn't exactly recommend it but I'm glad I watched it. It was very enjoyable for whatever the heck it was. :)

Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001)
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/de/Atlantis_The_Lost_Empire_poster.jpg
At the same time Disney's greatest and weakest achievement...
Disney went all-in with this one, firstly creating a visual look of its own with creative backdrops and interesting cuts and directing and with characteristic characters based on edgy and rough shapes. The world-building is generally pretty solid and the character development is surprisingly well-done. Even the script might be Disney's most daring yet in terms of grown-up humor and general writing that will surpass children's understandings.
So what failed? The fact that they didn't go that extra mile and the fact that it actually changed focus too many times during production. At first it was supposed to be an action-adventure but that was changed a bit, which shows, because the beginning and end is bloated and all over the place while the middle is actually the interesting part. Also, it suffers from short length, since you can feel a much greater universe hidden inside this film. The overall feel of the movie comes off as some kind of adult anime to me, which I found out made sense since it was largely inspired from an anime I can't remember the name of.
Anyways, this movie could have been great but unfortunately it fails way too many places which is such a shame since I actually loved several places throughout. My impression at the end is undeniable though; I was disappointed, let-down and too annoyed by what I didn't like. Props to Disney for changing up their game for the third or fourth time in a row though...

By far the best film I have seen so far this year. Beautiful images with Felliniesque dream-like scenes. Bizaare modern humor. Brilliant choice in music, ranging from modern pop to classical. Deeply emotional scenes with phenomenal acting (especially from Michael Caine). This film is just so memorable.

This film is a wonderful return to form for Pixar that hits a home run in almost every category. Talented voice actors, great animation, inventive storyline, manages to make audiences emotional without being a full-out tearjerker, and a touching musical score. The animation was horrible, the audio was crap, the jokes weren't funny, and the movie was extremely sexual in its terrible dialogue. How this movie 1) got 5 fairly big-name actors for voices, 2) cost $45-65 million, and 3) got a theatrical release is beyond me! Worst animated film that I've ever seen!

Those are my problems with it. For me, a great bad move has to come naturally. Kung Fury felt like it was trying too hard and was aspiring to be a meme instead of a movie. Yeah, I don't really buy into the whole "it's not supposed to be taken seriously" as a defence because, well, that much is obvious. It's what happens after you decide not to take it seriously that counts. Ursaguy already pointed out a lot of the usual genuine so-bad-it's-good movies, but doing a deliberately so-bad-it's-good movie is really hard. That's not to say that there aren't successes (stuff like Garth Marenghi's Darkplace and Black Dynamite comes to mind), but the reason Kung Fury doesn't succeed is that it doesn't do anything worthwhile with its premise. Its whole plot lacks personality (Hitler's the villain? Groundbreaking) and comes across as too much of a mishmash of "awesome" stuff like dinosaurs, Vikings, lasers, robots, etc. without doing much to make me care about what happens one way or the other. The obviously bad CGI isn't bad because it's low-quality, it's bad because it only serves to compromise the film's status as an '80s parody. Those other works I mentioned used obviously poor practical effects not unlike the ones in actual Z-grade schlock, while Kung Fury and its reliance on CGI just makes the whole thing look incredibly insincere. Even the actual jokes aren't good - the only time I laughed was at the scene where Hitler fired a gun down a phone to kill the person on the other end, and even then that was straight-up lifted from already-existent Hitler-killing retro spoof Danger 5. I mean:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BfaI1-ANb6s
So yeah, even by bad-movie standards, Kung Fury sucks. It's empty and derivative in ways that are intolerable even for a shallow genre parody, and just because it's intentionally bad does not automatically make it so-bad-it's-good.

I had to do a presentation on Development of Personality on a teenager for Psychology class, so I though about using this movie as a case study.
It's amazing how close to real life Linklater got this time! I watched it with all the psychology notes I had looking for specific traits of personality and phases and the movie has everything!!!
I remember liking it a lot the first time I watched it though I though it was a bit way too long. This time, I can see how the length fits perfectly the point of the movie. It's like we are being shown what is life all about, all the small happenings that look huge at the time and how they create who we are today. The last 30 minutes are even more strong emotionally I remembered and I ended up liking this more than I did on a first watch (which was already a lot)!
A masterpiece!

(rewatch)
http://www.screendaily.com/pictures/636xAny/0/7/2/1124072_tropa_de_elite_2.jpg
It's hard to find a sequel that complements so well the original movie. The first Elite Squad was a adrenaline-fueled action masterpiece showing how is the life of Special Forces on a brazilian slum. The entire movie is about extreme violence and dialogue.
This one is about the backstage of poverty, about how far can corruption really go. We see Capt. Nascimento, no longer a cop, trying to beat the System from within. It's amazing how Wagner Moura portraits that development, without losing the badass guy but with a lot more drama on his mind.
Being a more ambicious film, the script is not as perfect as the first one, but it's still better than 99,9% of this century Hollywood films. I didn't particulary liked the performance of Irandhir Santos as Fraga, but the rest of the acting is pretty good!

There is an ongoing dialogue that exists between you and whatever films you chose to revisit on a semi regular basis. The great Pauline Kael was said to never have watched a film more than once. Her job as a critic was not to form a malleable relationship with a film, but to readily and critically pass judgement on it.
While the critic's responsibility to their readers is to punctually and lawfully hand down a verdict, we all know that the most captivating cases are the ones that aren't so easily dealt with. Judge Judy's arbitration might fit better in a time slot, but most disputes aren't resolved in an afternoon. Years go by, appeals are made, new evidence surfaces... What might seem like an open and shut case from the onset, mutates into something magnitudes more challenging and thus rewarding.
Years into the trial, I'm still in the discovery phase with Paul Thomas Anderson's The Master and I kind of hope it never ends.

I was to the """cineclub""" of my University and I'm a little unhappy because the guy who's responsable of the """cineclub""" choose always American recent movies. Of course, I've nothing against American recent movies but it could be nice to get out of our comfort zone... :( especially for students in cinema and broadcasting!
The guy choose for tonight Be Kind Rewind. I quote Michel Gondry as a director I dislike in the Topic "Directors That Instantly Turn You Off" and after watching this movie, I won't change my mind. And now, I could quote Jack Black in the Topic "Actors That Instantly Turn You Off".
Not my kind of humor at all (I smiled two times), the script is muddled. I didn't like this naive tone. As a conclusion, I already forgot the movie.

This middle installment of The Apu Trilogy was not as powerful for me as the first, but it is still brilliant filmmaking. I thought this movie was a little more predictable in some aspects, but it still does a fantastic job at putting the viewer into it's world. I'm looking forward to part 3 in a few days.

Lilo & Stitch (2002)
rewatch

Ohana means family...
I didn't like this too much last time I watched it and though it was better this time around I still have a feeling of something not being quite right. At times I feel rather alienated from the film and the emotion it wants to put forward. It reminde me of The Emperor's New Groove with its hectic, crazy and fragmented style. But this film does deliver its emotional punch a bit better, which has also been mostly abscent with the last few films.
What Lilo & Stitch does really great is the underlying layer of heart and deep character studies. Even though the film is very surfaced and energetic everything underneath is what impacts you. The sister who struggles to raise her smaller sister on her own, balancing job and private life on an uneven fundament. You really feel with her character and see how frustrated and broken she is inside. Lilo is also a character easily paralleled to the real world, with her different personality and clear signs of lonliness, search for comfort and of course a calmer and easier life.
But unfortunately all this is under the surface and often very subtle, while the surface is action-packed, odd, wicked and just downright mad. The story is also very all over the place and I agree with a critic saying it felt like a television show or short idea(s) developed into a full-length feature. The humor is hit or miss for me and though the movie looks nice, yet again with a new creative style, and sounds nice too, it still doesn't feel quite right to me. I understand if you love this, but personally I can't really get all the way into it.

Ok, ok. Guys please don't get mad. I have in mind all those things, but still for some reason I enjoyed Kung Fury. I didn't think the lasers, explosions and dinosaur were there to make it look cooler, I thought it was there only to add to the ridiculousness and stupidity of the plot. I didn't say I viewed it as a "so-bad-it's-good", I viewed it as a "so-ridiculous-it's-good".
Yeah, I'll concede that "ridiculous" is a more suitable descriptor than "cool", but even so the ridiculous nature of the film still managed to feel forced and unfocused in ways that didn't prove amusing. It just lacks the spark.

Ok, finally watched If I Stay last night with my gf. I was expecting the absolute worst and made sure booze and THC were flowing steadily throughout my body before PLAY was touched. These kind of movies are not normally my thing and didn't expect this particular film to be any different.
That said, I was pleasantly surprised. Certainly not the train wreck I was anticipating. I thought at times it was far too melodramatic and manipulating, but I dug several aspects of the movie, especially the girl's parents and their relationship. I'm sick and tired of every parent in movies being virtual clones. It's refreshing to see lively, free-willed, foul-mouthed, hip, rocker parents. There's a lot more of them out there than cinema portrays, so it's a great change of pace to see those characteristics. There were two scenes that stood out involving the parents.
The first was when the mother came home one day and found the father sitting in the hall in the dark listening to his daughter playing the cello from another room. The look on his face was one of anguish, like, "Would she please stop playing that damn thing!" And those really were partially his thoughts. He told his wife she's been playing all day. She asked if he wanted her to go tell her to knock it off. He told her no and explained that while it's annoying, he's never seen her or anyone else so passionate about something, and while it was aggravating to hear the instrument hours on end, he liked seeing her doing something she loved so much. To me, that was the best scene of the movie and showed the genuine love he had for his little girl.
The second scene involving her parents that I liked was between her and her mother. It was when she came home the day after New Year's Eve after enduring something highly emotional. She saw the pain in her eyes and kicked everyone out of the kitchen so they could talk. The conversation they had was very cool and just what you'd expect from a mother of her persona: gentle tough, and real. It was some of the best parenting advice I've ever heard in both film and real life.
There was also two moving scenes between the main character and her grandfather, but I don't want to give the impression the entire movie is bout the main character and her family. It's important, but most of the film centers around her and a young man she meets and their ensuing relationship. I certainly enjoyed the family aspect of the film, but the romance side wasn't bad. My biggest complaint with movies like this is the male lead. Usually the character is some arrogant, pretentious moron that makes me want to throw my toaster at the tv. The male lead in this one was actually fairly decent and didn't raise my blood temperature too high. Both him and their relationship didn't sail too far into the Sea of Cheese and found a nice balance between entertaining adults and teens.
The star of the movie was Mia, played by Chloe Grace Moretz. Moretz packed in a fairly strong performance. The movie was a good vehicle to display her acting prowess. Not sure if she can excel outside the rom-com genre but I definitely enjoyed her here. There really wasn't any part of the film where I thought her acting was too fake. Most of it was pretty believable and enjoyed her character.
Overall, as dirty, embarrassed, and shameful as I feel about saying this, I enjoyed If I Stay. I will vehemently deny this around my male friends and instead tell a fart joke followed by a manly fist-bump. But yeah, this will secretly be a movie I found appealing and may watch it again in a few years alone in the dark with the curtains pulled to.
I'll give this one a 2.5, possibly 3, out of 5 star rating. That may sound a little low considering the positive things I said about it, but if you knew me you'd know that's a stellar score on my part for a rom-com.
I just realized I wrote a lengthy review and said good things about a rom-com and will promptly go see a psychiatrist tomorrow just to make sure everything is ok in Brain Land.

I had high hopes for this, thinking it could potentially be one of my favorite documentaries. It didn't quite make it there, but it was still far from a disappointment. The best thing about it is that these savages have allowed the rest of the world to see what they are. The whole idea behind the movie is brilliant, and it is beautifully shot which is a nice contrast to the horror of the subject matter.

Ken Russell really is a mixed bag for me, going into this I knew it was going to be a bizarre and trippy experience, which it certainly was but I found it all too chaotic. It doesn't help that I'm not really a fan of The Who either, so the music didn't do much for me. Surely with a casting of Oliver Reed, Ann Margaret, Elton John, Eric Clapton, Tina Turner and Jack Nicholson, this could provide some excitement in this Rock Opera but no, the majority of these were pretty much wasted here.

Star Wars Episode 3: The Revenge of the Sith (2005) 3
The more tolerable of the prequels. My rating hasn't changed from last time watching it and tbh it probably won't ever change. I'm not a huge mega Star Wars fan but the original trilogy is CLEARLY better (My 5 year old self who saw Episode 1 and that was their introduction into Star Wars knew these prequels stunk) the prequels have overall ruined any chance of me being a die hard Star Wars fan, the original trilogy is good but there is no Nostalgia factor for me. One thing I will give Episode 3 is that Hayden got better from Episode 2 (not much better but some of his scenes were actually decent in this movie). Ewan McGregor ("He Killed the Younglings" line excluded) and Ian McDiarmid who plays Palpatine were the best parts of this episode (McDiarmid was actually good in almost every scene except his fight scenes) and kudos to Jimmy Smits who was actually pretty solid as well in the prequels as a whole. I love Samuel L. Jackson as much as everybody else but he just did not fit in this movie. You know who would been good for Windu had they been a little older when these movies were being made? Chiwetel Ejiofor.....or they could of just scrapped Windu all together tbh and made some alien jedi take on his role.

Spectre have taken that spot for me now. But the most shocking & depressing thing for me in Skyfall was Bond killing Silva by throwing a knife from behind!! WTF!?! This is James Bond...he doesn't or shouldn't at least kill his main villain in a mission by throwing a knife from the back. Bond shouldn't be that coward. Both deserved a better or more engaging & intense fight at the end.

SPOILER!!!

The Shoot Horses, Don't They? rating_4-
We work hard every single day, in hopes of one day making something of ourselves. We get little sleep and though tired we continue to work. We lean on a significant other for support, but even they aren't enough to make us happy. Time goes by and there we are: still dancing that same old dance. The dance goes on forever, until the day we pass away.
First view?
Very allegoric. Notice how they have to race in circles, just like life, yet getting nowhere, not like a ladder. Notice the first to quit are the young ones who could care less - they aren't corrupted yet. Notice how much Sarrazin's character is chided for wanting to see the sun up, as if nature had no purpose, that materialism is the only thing to work for. Superstition with the older women, the sponsors. We keep hearing from Gig Young how "it's all about the show" (ripping apart Alice's dress), but not saying anything, having that paranoia and false envy around, and later when she becomes so crazy she only wants to hear about his family while they make out, because humanity is gone. We also find out even the winners lose. After hope and purpose in life is lost, some resort to a last effort.
The film is much more relevant today - I wish more would see it. It's definitely the best picture Sydney Pollack made, the best picture Jane Fonda has been in. It's easily a Top 5 all-time. 15 years ago, I was looking through films, and my prejudice with the title kept me away from it, until a friend/professor mentioned it being his favorite film.
The King of Kong - 4
Probably one of the best underdog sports movies I've ever seen.
Interesting. Never heard of this but definitely going to check it out. Looked it up on Wiki and seems cool. Plus, Donkey Kong was always one of my favorite 80's video games.

Apur Sansar - 7/10
I would also rate "Aparajito" at a 7
This is the final of the Apu trilogy. Death is milked a lot, but it's still good. The first was one was great, and that's all that was planned. But money gets in the way, so someone would release something at a deadline, even if it could be better. For example, if Paul McCartny came out with a real piece of garbage, many people will still buy it - he's a Beatle. This goes for the more famous directors, actors, etc.. I'd love to do a few experiments, including a reverse. Get someone with little notoriety with talent, and release with the most commercial guy and watch how many people will call it "genius" but thought it was "garbage" under the name of John Doe.

Johnny Got His Gun - 9/10
Wow!
One of the best written films I ever saw. Some real funny parts too. A tiny lull after about an hour, otherwise it would have got a 10. Very original and creative. I never heard of this movie until Mort Sahl mentioned it on his streaming show last week. I had it for a while, then saw in the "Most depressing/cynical films" thread that Gabrielle had mentioned it with one of my favs "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?"
I'm wondering why I never heard of it, and why it's never even mentioned among great movies. I'm guessing it has something to do with the fact that Dalton Trumbo was a Communist, and a member of the "Hollywood 10" which will always remain a stain in America.
I'm very curious about the film "Trumbo" coming out. I think it's perfect Bryan Cranston is in it, since so many people will see it with the taste of meth (Breaking Bad) in their mouth. I just hope they don't run away from the substance. Please no diversions!
Very original, just amazing film about war, humanity, purpose, and the dirty business of war and the system in general.
P.S. - I find it interesting that M*A*S*H was right before this, and similar in ways. Anti-war movie, using some satire, both written by the Hollywood Blacklisted 10, and both having Donald Sutherland.

Les Mysterieuses Cites D'Or, Saison 2 (Aka, The mysterious Cities of Gold, Season 2)
http://i83.servimg.com/u/f83/16/81/92/05/61388210.jpg
Overall, a little disappointing at the beginning, but still gratifying at the last 3 episodes.
Season 2 takes place where the original series left off. Not at the exact moment, but only a little later. The main plot of this series is, of course, to find the second city of gold. All main characters from the original series come back and we're introduced to 2 new characters that tag along: Ambrosius and Xares ...who at the end are revealed to be the same person...still gotta admit I didn't see that coming and still was a good plot twist.
There are a lot of fill-in episodes and some unnecessarily long scenes. The music is still good, but it doesn't fit the ambient of the new series since we're used to the old one (for those who watch it). The whole "series" concept changed and turned into a movie concept, using movie cinematography, movie music and movie character development.
I still enjoyed it a lot and I think is fairly well for a second season of a cult series. That's why I give it a rating_4

What a Way to Go! (1964) Re-watch
Shirley MacLaine is a woman talking to her psychiatrist about her late husbands and how she's had a run of bad luck with them because of their being rich. She's convinced that she's the bad luck that causes them to get rich and then die in increasingly creative ways. But is she the bad luck? And do they all die? The fun is in finding out. Shirley has one of her best roles here, and she actually manages to steal the show from the outstanding support cast, including Dean Martin, Gene Kelly, Paul Newman, Robert Mitchum, Dick Van Dyke and Robert Cummings. Funny stuff, especially Robert Mitchum's, um, mistake. Good fun, well worth watching.

North to Alaska (1960) Re-watch
Good Western/Comedy with John Wayne starring along with Stewart Granger as partners who strike gold in Alaska in 1900 and Wayne travels to Seattle to get Granger's fiance of three years! to come back with him while Granger prepares their honeymoon cottage. Wayne finds that the "fiance" has tired of waiting and gotten married. So Wayne hires a lady of the evening (Capucine) to try and fill the bill for Granger. She falls for Wayne and things go sideways from there. It's all set in Nome, Alaska at the height of the gold rush and things are crazy, to say the least. Fun all the way through, especially with an epic fight at the end in the muddy streets of Nome. Lighthearted and worth watching.

Holy Motors (2012) is jaw dropping on a pure technical and talent level, but in the vein of similar meta films-about-life-about-filmmaking (8 1/2, Synecdoche, N.Y.), I found it a little too distant to really resonate with me. I wanted the director to get a little more personal and vulnerable to tie everything together. As it stands, I found it to be less than the sum of its parts. Objectively brilliant execution though. Masterful. 3/5

Like Someone In Love (2011) is such a calming experience. AestheticoftheMind's recent piece on cuts being both cheaply thrilling and anxiety inducing really made me appreciate the brutal patience of this. The shots are so powerful without ever feeling contrived. A simple pan is as flashy as it gets, letting composition be its foundation. The camera just sits there and observes what feels like a genuine slice of life. The dialogue is soft spoken magic, completely natural and yet deliberate. If it's boring, it's because we expect movies to be artificial and full of affectations. This denies all of that as excess or cheating or plain deception. Reality should be enough, and it is. 4/5

Shoah (1985)
4.5
http://iv1.lisimg.com/image/7039884/720full-shoah-screenshot.jpg
I've watched a few documentaries recently about the holocaust and other mass atrocities from around the world, so I was a little afraid that I would be somewhat numb to this one. That certainly didn't happen. Hearing specific first person accounts of what happened is truly powerful. Judging any movie seems tricky at times, but I've really felt unsure when judging documentaries. Sometimes I'm not sure if it's how well one is made that captures me, or if it's simply a matter of how much I'm interested in the subject matter. This movie is basically a series of interviews about a subject with power that is built in. I feel like that alone doesn't necessarily constitute a great film, but at the same time, I don't see how I can take anything away from it. There was obviously a ton of work that went into this movie, and it also contains numerous effective shots. At nearly 10 hours, the length is a problem for me. At times it feels tedious, I think this could have been trimmed substantially. Not using an interpreter probably could have cut out an hour by itself. I can't picture watching this again, but the immense power of the movie is something that can't be manufactured. That's the big picture to me.

This is either my 14th or 15th Bergman film. Honestly not sure which.
I'd rank this among his best. There's an inherent "coldness" to some of his films. I didn't find that problem here. The characters are well written and fleshed out, the writing is incredible, and the movie is always interesting to watch. I viewed the theatrical cut but wouldn't mind viewing the longer TV cut somewhere down the line.

Blue Valentine (2010)

http://cdn.moviestillsdb.com/sm/beea88e620937af02beee6bf10d0aeaf/blue-valentine.jpg
This movie chronicles a few years in the lives of a couple, played by Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams. They meet, fall in love, get married, and have relationship problems. There's not much more to it, but there didn't need to be. I think a lot of married people would find something to relate to in this movie. I found it to be extremely sad, and it gets there without the use of any type of tragedy. It's just every day, ordinary emotions and feelings on display. I always like Gosling and Williams, and they're both fantastic. They needed to be, because there's no noteworthy supporting characters. Great recommendation by Zotis.

Krampus (2015)
This was surprisingly good! I wasn't expecting much but I was surprised. Krampus is a holiday-horror-comedy about the ancient goat-demon spirit that punishes kids that lose the Christmas spirit. It starts out with a family who doesn't get along too well getting together for Christmas, then the young son named Max loses his holiday spirit. That's when Krampus shows up and starts terrorizing the family.
I thought it did both the horror and the comedy very well. It's not just the Krampus that terrorizes the family, but also his little "helpers" that almost outshine the Krampus himself. What I like about them the most is that most of them are done with practical effects (man-eating jack-in-the-box, killer teddy bear) and look great. Even the ones they had to use CGI for (gingerbread men) I didn't have much problem with due to their comedic factor. Krampus also looks very good as well, and I thought his intro into the movie was very well-done.
The comedy bits also had me laughing throughout. The Aunt was hilarious! Practically every line she had made me laugh, and even some of the villains had their funny bits. There are many silly lines throughout but it doesn't try to overdo it or get in the way of the scary bits.
Krampus is a refreshing, original, and entertaining take on the holiday film genre. Some people are complaining that it's too "kiddie" and it should of been R rated and more gory but I had no problem with it not being overly violent. Even without buckets of blood I thought the horror aspect was done much better than other recent horror movies. I recommend it!

Blue Valentine is great Cricket glad you liked it. I found it sad too, the hotel scene was the one that got me most Williams awkwardly acting like there was anything left in their relationship was pretty hard to watch.
