Rewatch for me, and it held up! I wanted my wife to see it and she enjoyed it as well. There are some weaker scenes and Beanie Feldstein wears on me a bit, but it's still a delightful comedy

'Ajami' (2009)
Directed by Scandar Copti & Yaron Shani
https://m.media-amazon.com/images/M/MV5BNTczNTAzMzQ4NV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMDA4OTk2Mw@@._V1_.jpg
A very fine example of 'Hyperlink Cinema'. Interlocking stories with overlapping character arcs in the same vein as Babel, Amorres Perros or Pulp Fiction. Ajami is slightly different in that it is a film with no comedy or relief, and is a tale of revenge, death, hatred, crime, religion and separation, set in a very real life like situation on the outskirts of Tel Aviv, Israel.
Set in Israel, it depicts the lives of people that face suffering and violence every day, most of which is brought about by the very nature of the land in which they live. It's told in 4 separate chapters, each depicting a different storyline but with impact on the other 3. This was the Directors first ever feature and their only ever feature to date, so it's all the more remarkable that it's as accomplished as it is. The Jewish-Palestinian Directing team (Scandar Copti and Yaron Shani) itself mirrors some of the themes in the film. Namely Co-existence and religious difference.
The actors are mostly non professionals. Time and time again in these types of films we see stand out performances from inexperienced actors absolutely nail their parts like they do here. Maybe it's because they have some experience of the subject matter. Maybe it's because they are just being themselves. Maybe it's because the Director has a skill that brings the best out in them. Either way it worked.
Towards the end there is one part of the story that didn't fit. It felt too forced. Too deliberately placed to move the plot to where it needed to go. That's a small criticism in an otherwise fine movie though.
Other than the performances, the strength of this movie is not to be too preachy ("why can't we all get along and leave our differences behind us etc etc etc"), but instead it just tells us what is going on, and why there is so much pent up anger and hatred among the people that live in Tel Aviv. It offers no real solution to the problems. No conundrums or ambiguity. No moral dilemmas that we have to analyse after the credits roll. It just tells it like it is. Well worth watching this film though if you enjoy world cinema.

I like melodramas so I figured I'd like this. It felt more modern than most of the other silents I've watched for whatever reason, and it also seemed classier. I liked Greta Garbo more than in her later roles, probably because I couldn't hear her voice. It could have used a little more excitement but it was very good.

A Most Violent Year (2014)
All my life I've been trying not to be a gangster
In 1981, the most dangerous year in New York's history, a businessman struggles to uphold his righteous code whilst his oil is being stolen and the police are gunning for him.. Brilliantly crafted cinema brimming with suspense and fantastic performances from Oscar Isaac, Jessica Chastain, David Oyelowo and all involved.

Enjoyed this. Henry Rollins is Jack and he never died. He's just been walking the earth forever and nowadays he's taking on small time mafia sorts who have kidnapped his daughter. A daughter he barely knows and really doesn't like. Very unusual film that has much more to offer than simply a kidnap and rescue story. Rollins gives kind of a darkly comic one-note performance that I can see grating on some people but it worked for me.

Phoenix really made this character his own. I like this version of Joker as much as Heath Ledger's version, for different reasons. He deserves an Oscar for his performance.

Lake Mungo (2008)
For some reason for years I thought this was a Japanese horror film, something similar to Noroi: The Curse.. well it's not.. it's Australian and it's trash.. it's apparently about a family dealing with grief of their daughter drowning in a lake although they hardly seem grief stricken at all, the father in particular is bland and unlikable and when he's talking about his teenage daughter drowning in a lake, you might be forgiven for thinking it was a cat that drowned, all the things happening don't seem real or like human behaviour... after one thing happens they say the father was inconsolable, although you don't get to see this because I doubt the actor had that range.. its also a chilling ghost story (it isn't) it tries to be clever but it isn't.. I can't be bothered to rate this.. anybody know of a Japanese horror film called Lake something??

I've watched a lot of films recently which I'll post about soon but a couple I saw in the cinema last week that I would be surprised if anyone else has seen:
Wajib (Annemarie Jacir, 2017) 4
http://english.ahram.org.eg/Media/News/2018/5/17/2018-636621548049434706-943.jpg
A complex portrayal of family relationships and society in Nazareth. The beauty of this film is that the plot is fairly simple but is used as a device where the story is conveyed through the use of images, dialogue and the performances. Each scene adds a new layer to the film, building a rich detail filled portrayal of the family. The plot builds and builds, and does get more explicit by the end, but it's not too relevant. What I liked about the film is that the destination wasn't that important, and that it took a balanced approach to tackling the varying opposing forces such as conservatism versus liberalism, traditions versus progressive values, and so on. Very humorous too and I was not surprised to see that the two main characters are real life father and son, there's great chemistry with the cast throughout.
Bait (Mark Jenkin, 2019) 3.5
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/content/dam/films/2019/08/30/bait3_trans_NvBQzQNjv4BqZSNKKWDLuiSprQolulSRm9IeABRuzU_vlpIOmBX-ssI.jpg?imwidth=450
Shot on black and white 16mm and put together pretty much by one man, Bait is more a documentary verite style film than a piece of formal film making, although it does play with those elements at certain times with use of flashbacks and editing. Definitely a film for our times, for people in the UK. Takes a look at the social issues and anger felt in many "neglected" communities of today, who feel that they are being left behind as the country changes and moves forward. I wrote a review here - http://screen-hopping.co.uk/film-reviews/bait/ - if anyone wants to hear more :)

Just like Chawhee said, I like Elton John more than Queen and Bohemian Rhapsody was pretty good, so I had high hopes. They're both amazing musical artists; there's just more songs I like by Elton. At first I thought this was going to be terrible but it grew on me to the point where I was very entertained. It's probably better suited as a Broadway play and it was missing Elton's voice, but his story and his legend are worth telling. The vast majority of filmmakers are just simply not up to the task of doing a movie like this justice. It's likely that I'm giving it plus rating with my heart rather than with my head.

'Diego Maradona' (2019)
https://i.imgur.com/KA5tNys.gif
Superb documentary about the flawed genius footballer Diego Maradona. I'm probably biased as I grew up watching his genius on the pitch and the controversy that followed him. But even if you have no clue who he is, it's a great portrait of a troubled man who felt the world on his shoulders. The unseen footage and on the pitch sounds are incredible, and there was alot of backstory involving love affairs and the Naples maffia that I knew nothing about.

'The Ox-Bow incident' (1943)
https://i.imgur.com/0eosLAK.gif
Dark, short, tense moralistic Western. Henry Fonda playing a very similar role to that of his other great ethical dilemma movie - '12 Angry Men'. All the ugly hallmarks of mob-justice are on display, with Fonda being the only level headed one amongst them. The decision whether or not to hang three drifters with little evidence is the central plot. Reveals at the ending are predictable but still pack a punch. Excellent film. One of the best Westerns I've seen.

Along Came the Devil II (Jason DeVan, 2019)
Rarely these days, sequels are as good as the originals but this is one of those rarities where the sequel was not just as good as the original, it was slightly better! The third and final act is both jaw-dropping and leaves room for a potential third installment. I loved the original and this one was well acted by Laura Slade Wiggins, Mark Ashworth, and Cassius DeVan, who could be a breakout star in the genre.

Shadows: Dark Encounter (TV, 1976) 7.5/10
Another very successful episode that got under my skin. Interesting that the subjects of evacuees or adopted children have regular cropped up in this series – an insight into the fears and insecurity that could occur if you were in that position.
I wasn't familiar with Alex Scott and I thought he was really good in this, playing the 'amnesiac' John. I enjoyed the ominous beginning, as he describes his fear of the place, the trees and darkness, and it actually reminded me of Stephen King's It. In fact I can imagine this would have been quite a scary story for younger children – the tree attack for one, but also the many unsettling lines that communicate just how strange the town and its inhabitants are. It's easy to work out that John and the kite-flying boy are one and the same person but this is assisted brilliantly by excellent casting. The actors are very effective all-round, and they do well at portraying the epic nature of the task at hand.

Noises Off... (1992)
A perplexing title, which refers to noises off stage in theater that are meant to be heard by the audience, this film directed by Peter Bogdanovich based upon the play by Michael Frayn, is a whirlwind of ensemble acting.
The stellar cast includes, Michael Caine, Carol Burnett, Julie Hagerty, Christopher Reeve, Nicollette Sheridan, John Ritter and Denholm Elliot. Never will you see such comedic timing in a display of lightning dialogue and dizzying action in a rather complex staging. The second act is some of the finest writing and performance that I've seen.
There's no way the viewer can catch all the gags and follow the complete story line in one viewing. But most will want to see it again. I did...;)

Had to give it time to digest. It was easy to appreciate Joaquin's performance but I still hadn't made up my mind on the film as a whole. Now, after sleeping on it, reading about it and watching clips/images, I love it. Maybe Joaquin was so good that he totally overshadowed the film? Anyway, loved how it was so dark and the gritty feel of Gotham was all too reminiscent of Taxi Driver, especially in given the similarities I felt between Travis Bickle and Joker.
No time to write more but I'm looking forward to seeing it again.

I was intrigued by this psychological thriller about a serial killer throughout.
It's got some very disturbing and gruesome scenes, but at times it felt like it was on the verge of being a dark comedy with some very brief similarities to American Psycho or the series Dexter, although it was not a copy of either.
The unique thing about it was the narration between the main character, Jack, (played by Matt Dillon) and an unseen person we don't meet until the end. Also, it was a blend of murder and art (which in some ways reminded me of the character of the Joker - not the new movie, since I haven't seen it, but the fact that the Joker considered himself a homicidal artist).
The way the movie progresses, with chapters, was interesting.
I'm questioning the ending - not sure if I really liked it or if it was too hokey and kind of killed the rest of the movie? It wasn't what I was expecting (which is good), but it was also a turn in a direction away from the rest of the movie and I wonder if something a little more reality based would have been better (like the whole time Jack had been talking to a psychiatrist after being caught and sentenced to prison, or to a priest as he's about to face execution for his crimes?).
I would give this a solid 4 except for my unsure feelings about the ending and my usual complaint - the movie is 2.5 hours long! No need for it to be that long. ;)

2nd Re-watch...For my money, Rob Reiner's masterpiece...everything works here. Standout performances from Cary Elwes (one of the industry's most underrated actors), Chris Sarandon and especially Christopher Guest...I can't believe this is the same Christopher Guest that played Nigel Tufnel in Spinal Tap.

I saw some of this the other day and clearly I need to see it asafp :p. I've always liked Chris Morris so I knew what to expect. One bit that really made me laugh was the news report showing the headline "Asian man's head falls out of a tree". It was interesting to see Kayvan Novak as I didn't know him before What We Do in the Shadows. Arsher Ali I've seen before more than once and he was really good in Line of Duty.

I Origins (2014)
I took The Samoan Lawyer's recommendation, and watched this last night. I'm glad I did.
Written & Directed by Mike Cahill, and starring Michael Pitt (Boardwalk Empire, Seven Psychopaths), Britt Marling (The OA), and Astrid Berges-Frisbey (King Arthur), the title is a little enigmatic and pretentious sounding, but the film delivers the goods.
The base premise involves evolution, creationism, and reincarnation, but it plays as a romance/mystery, and never gets preachy or highbrow. It starts as a romance then gradually morphs into a metaphysical mystery.
There is no gutter language, graphic sex, nor gore; and but for possibly one scene it should have been rated PG-13. The picture is one of those that likely has been passed over because it doesn't contain "A" list stars, but it's a very well put together, enjoyable and thoughtful film.

Greed (1924)
Maybe one of the greatest films that never was. Greed had a hard time making it to the silver screen. Director Erich von Stroheim shot 85 hours of film and spent 2 hours filming in Death Valley for what would end up being only a 20 minute segment. Stroheim spent a year editing the film down to an epic 8 hour length and that was a year of his life he wasn't paid for as his contract stipulate he wouldn't be paid for post production work.
Only 12 people on the planet ever saw the completed 8 hour epic that was once Greed. Several of those 12 called Greed the greatest film ever made. And that's where Greed's story turns sour as the studio hacked and hacked the film down until it was only a couple hours long. All of that editing was against the wishes of Stroheim. In the beginning of the version of Greed I just watched there's a quote from Stroheim who laments the misery he suffered as other's cut his opus down to size.
What we have today is a film that's worth watching but will never have the full effect Stroheim intended. I watched the 1 hour 50 minute restored version and it reminded me of Orson Welle's The Lady From Shanghai, in that both films are vastly interesting, but the pacing is off with missing scenes and choppy editing...editing that broke both director's hearts.

I Origins (2014)
About: A young molecular biologist (Michael Pitt) and his new student laboratory partner (Brit Marling) work on uncovering evidence that will prove evolution is real, by disproving a key argument in the Intelligent Design belief.
Review: Director/writer Mike Cahill churns some goobly goo religious ideas under the guise of pseudo science. Mike Cahill who previously wrote and directed the thought provoking Indie sci fi Another Earth (2011), fails to deliver here with his ham fisted preaching and hokey science. Add into that some lifeless characters and you get a sleeper that's best left sleeping. I've seen movies made by Christian organizations and even though they have a message they can still be a well made film.
I Origins is a poorly made film. What we're asked to swallow is an abrupt 180 degree character change from a scientist who's working on proving evolution, then abruptly comes to believe souls are being reborn into babies, based on repeating iris specks in the eye. Of course this same research scientist who was dedicated to disproving Intelligent Design spends his time buying cigarettes and lottery tickets. Any scientist knows those are two stupid things to do.
Nothing else to say here, if you want to see a good though provoking sci fi by Mike Cahill, watch his Another Earth.

In the Shadow of the Moon (2019)
Another bad Netflix movie. It's story is logically flawed, its twists are very predictable and its whole concept is built on extremely black and white view of the world (which doesn't matter in certain kinds of films but feels childish in ones that pretend to delve in moral matters). Geez, I don't know, it could be. Have you seen Another Earth? If so, your thoughts?
Yes, I watched it last night. Overall the cast, acting, special effects, and photography were well done. And I enjoyed the ending.
But the notion of a duplicate Earth and Moon suddenly appearing in our solar system was so preposterous that it took a good 30 minutes or so of following the film to forget about the initial absurdity. Astrological impossibilities are acceptable in a super hero, straight sci/fi, or comic film; but in a more serious film, such as this one, it didn't sit right with me.
I did enjoy the underlying suspense and plot development, although it was hard to swallow that the girl could spend that much time from the git-go in service to the male protagonist without revealing her purpose.
Based strictly on this picture from 2011 and I Origins from 2014, I'd say that director/writer Mike Cahill is heading in the right direction. I'll have to investigate films that he's done since. Looks like he's done most of his work with, and starring, his lady Brit Marling, so it remains to be seen whether or not that will be a benefit or a limiting factor...;) I see the new one he's working on (Bliss) is without Marling.

What an odd criticism. There are plenty of serious sci fi films with 'preposterous' ideas.
Besides, the plot point is almost a subtext mechanism to push on the notions of guilt, second chances and death etc etc etc

Try not to misconstrue my words. I never said AE was a "serious sci-fi movie". Straight sci-fi movies support preposterous ideas. This was a serious dramatic film which to my taste was made slightly inane and awkward by the introduction of a solar system impossibility.
You, of course, are entitled to your own opinion.
My guess is that Cahill simply wanted to spin this rather trite story in an other-worldly way, which is his penchant.

Decent, but a little boring during the Jerry sections for me, though still some laughs to be had. The uses of "My man!" tickled me, probably because Denzel Washington says he got that a lot after being in American Gangster :).
This show replicates the kick I got from Doctor Who for many years, and it's so inventive and complex that it's a worthy derivation. I'm often reminded of specific stories. Here, Jerry's total acceptance of the fakery – especially the compliant Beth – is a bit like the title character of Rose (2005) being oblivious that her boyfriend has obviously been replaced by a living plastic replica (with excellent, subtle makeup design); also the insectoid Zigerions and their attempts to find out Rick's formula took me back to the audio story The Creed of the Kromon (2004).

El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie 2019 Directed by Vince Gilligan
rating_4+
85/100
The film itself was good quality, and was well directed and photographed, although I was never a fan of Aaron Paul's character, "Jesse", who became the featured story in the film. He did a great job, but perhaps it could be the casting for my taste. Contrast him with Jonathan Banks' "Mike" who dominates every scene he's in. We also slightly labored under the handicap of not having seen the full last Breaking Bad season. So to me "El Camino" does not hold up real well as a stand-alone feature, unless one has closely followed the series. Still, we did enjoy it.
I note the title is phrased "A" Breaking Bad Movie, not "The" Breaking bad movie. Consequently it makes me wonder if there might be another one.

Joker (2019)
I thought this was a pretty good film that ticked all the boxes of what it set out to be, and I think your opinion of it will change based on what you're expecting from it going in. Having seen Taxi Driver a couple of weeks ago, I won't deny this movie feels a little like a remake of that with the comic book character twist added on, but to be honest it didn't overwhelm all the good in this anyways. Joaquin Phoenix was the best part by a mile, and his performance was nothing short of stellar, so when 95% of the scenes have him in them, it is hard not to have his acting elevate the movie significantly. Even beyond the acting, I think the directing was well done, with some really beautiful shots in parts, and the sound/music was used with great effect (with exception to one case).
I have no problem recommending this to people who don't care about comic book movies/think they're all average, since really this operates more like a character study film than its typical peers. I'd rather have more of these than whatever the next 50 movies Marvel/DC has announced and carefully preplanned so far this new phase, since at least it was something different.
7.5/10, somewhere in the 7-8/10 range but I'll see how I feel after another viewing.

The Rivals of Sherlock Holmes:
The Sensible Action of Lieutenant Holst (TV, 1973) 5/10
The first full episode of the series I've seen. I had tried to watch the episode The Horse of the Invisible (1971) with Donald Pleasence but it was badly directed and the music swamped everything, so I gave up.
This episode is certainly better produced but really there's so little interest to sustain it. John Thaw looks quite out of place or possibly miscast in the title role. The minute he came on I thought: Colin Baker was obviously unavailable. Still, it's interesting to see him doing some Morse-like behaviour earlier in his career. Oddly enough I was reminded of the very first episode of Van der Valk, with the citizen who reports his missing wife, and also with the relationship between the protagonist and his own wife.
The thing that this is really worth watching for is Philip Madoc, who acts everyone else off the screen (and that's happened before :)).

Doc's rating: 7/10

Wow and wow. An incredible tale and an incredible film put together by Friedkin. The "sections" play well. From the seeds to the ultimately desperate attempt to escape justice/make some money to the epilogue.
Sheider is amazing as are the rest of the central cast. The bridge "crossings" indeed make the crux of the film.
I read somewhere that Friedkin regretted the casting of Roy Sheider in this, if so, I'm annoyed. The comments (if true) may be from the fact it tanked in the cinemas.

This big budget Bond spoof makes all the right moves providing a perfect blend of action and laughs...Melissa McCarthy turns in one of her strongest performances here, but it's the quieter moments in the film where she really shines...watch those opening scenes where she's trying to contain her feelings about Brad Fine (Jude Law)...there's some real acting going on there, but if the truth be known, Jason Statham pretty much steals the show in a performance that makes fun of his own onscreen persona.
3.5

1st Re-watch...what can I say, everything works here. Kathy Bates' powerhouse, Oscar-winning performance is just one of the reasons this movie works so well. Bates' performance would not have worked without James Caan's understated but equally powerful Paul Sheldon. Caan not only perfectly conveys Paul's fear of what's happening to him, but never forgets the physical pain the character is in. He's especially great whenever he attempts to sweet talk Annie into thinking he might have feelings for her. And I LOVE Richard Farnsworth as the sheriff. And it all works thanks to crisp direction by Rob Reiner that gives the whole story a very claustrophobic feel.

Watchable, quirky, funny, farcical, dark humour. Comparisons with the Coens are inevitable but it doesn't quite manage to punch at their level.
A band practice night goes very wrong when 3 friends decide to drink and smoke too much. What follows is an attempt to cover crime and save face. The line between drama and comedy isn't really melded together that well (something the Coens do perfectly). But the performances are pretty good and it never feels long or a drag at any point.
I like that the title character is called Dick Long given the connotations. And the character Earl sounded just like Danny McBride in Eastbound and Down.

My rating should be taken with a grain of salt. I loved it as a Breaking Bad fan, and it did seem like a good flick to me, but it's probably hard for me to be objective here. I think in the future I'm likely to think of it more as part of the show rather than a stand alone movie. Sad seeing Robert Forster.

Finally caught this superb documentary on Amazon Prime last night. The experience was completely enthralling, equally due to the magnificence of Bill Evans' unique jazz piano, and also to the fine documentary construction.
Evans was one of the very few geniuses in the history of jazz, and he influenced every jazz pianist from the post-bop era through to today; from Dave Brubeck to Chick Corea, and most everyone in between.
The film fairly documents Evans' career from start to finish, including the bands he was in, those he led, his acquaintances, and his wives and family relationships. It also chronicles his problems with drug addiction and his untimely death at aged 51.
This is a must watch for jazz fans, and for anyone else who enjoys learning about the movers and shakers in modern music performance.

The short answer IMO is that some people are genetically addictable, but most are not. There have been so many artists of all stripes drawn to drugs or booze, certainly in expressive or improvisational music, that it's almost an occupational hazard. Those that have vivid feelings and imaginations and who are in the business of expressing them, are some of the most natural folks to be lead into potential addiction, because it enhances their ability to zone in on their art, be innovative, and to get deeper into performance. The trouble is that it generally cannot last, and sooner or later the substance becomes more important than their expression, becoming a detraction rather than an aide. They burn hot while it lasts, but it almost never ends well.

Midsommar - 2019
2.5+
57759
Midsommar, from the creators of Hereditary that I rate above, is not meant to be frightening, like I believe most horror films try to, this is meant to be traumatic and surreal. The cinematography and the girl are the ones that support your emotional bag in this film, the girl having lost everything, being afraid of losing what's left, the cinematography tranquilizes a sheep before slaughter, in our case, the audience, shocking violence. I believe the author tried to make the audience understand what can lead people to join such cults. I think this is the most unappealing I've ever felt of Nordic women's, Jesus Almighty.

Simple, short run time, Classic Horror / Noir (not sure if it's a noir actually).
Narrated by the main character. Great suspenseful late night entertainment, I recommend it to Horror, Noir and old school crime detective lovers, and less of a recommendation to the gore blood and slash lovers.

Well, psychologically might be accurate, I don't really know, but that's how I see it as well. I saw the film half awaken, half asleep, the cinematography made me watch the film to be honest, and the shocking parts awaken me as well, and I'm not really good formulating opinions, my brain doesn't work like that, I have to sleep on it, think about it, and this film was not something I wanted to sleep on. There's two things that made understand it like this, one is how everyone in the commune replicated the pain of a individual as a group, and the scene where Pelle was taking with Dani, about understanding what she fells and how that commune made him forget what he had also experienced.

!st re-watch...Casey Affleck's gut-wrenching, Oscar-winning performance anchors this riveting tragedy that seemed even better the second time around. Kenneth Lonergan's brilliant Oscar-winning screenplay methodically unfolds the story of a social hermit who is forced to re-visit his tragic past after his brother's death. Lonergan's screenplay smoothly unfolds out of sequence without being too jarring and his direction is focused and sensitive. The scene depicted in the poster above actually moved me to tears and the rest of the film had me fighting them. Robbed of the 2016 Oscar for Best Picture.

Seen some of the TV episodes, they are pretty out there!!!
I watched a couple of silent films partly because i was inspired by our pre-1930 list and partly because i am alone on holiday in Athens. My favorite of the two was the soviet movie The New Babylon and Underworld by Josef von Sternberg was quite disappointing, though it had its moments (especially the last gunfight).

Shadows: Peronik (TV, 1976) 3/10
I had high hopes for this but it never came together properly. Too stagey, with teenagers that end up sounding posher than their parents, sometimes due to the dialogue.
Notwithstanding, I thought Paul Aston was good in the lead role of Tom, and I discovered that I had seen him before, playing a conscientious objector in The Duchess of Duke Street. Zelah Clarke, very good as Tom's girlfriend, appeared in another memorable episode the same year.
The best things here for me were Tom's illustrations of this particular Grail legend – really fantastic; the disturbing radiophonic music for the legend impinging on real life (this reminded me massively of the Doctor Who story The Rescue (1965). Its incidental music, by Tristram Cary, was so versatile that it was used many times during the early years of the show, much like Alexander Courage's music stood up to multiple uses on Star Trek); and the idea of Tom hallucinating Arthurian scenes on a TV screen.

Driven (2018)
Driven covers a good story, but the problem is that they just couldn't TELL it. I almost shut it off after 20 minutes, but decided to watch it to the end. It did get a little better when they focused on the suspense. The outline was good, but the writing (especially the dialogue), and the acting were barely "B" grade. Both Jason Sudeikis (Hoffman), and Corey Stoll (FBI agent) way over acted; whereas Lee Pace (DeLorean) was wooden and amateurish. Pace certainly looked the part, but between the writing and his tepid acting, the character was barely believable.
This might be an instance of a bunch of companies kicking in to pool some low-risk dough in order to spread out the investment, which ended up producing a mediocre picture. More expensive writer and actors would have helped. I thought it was interesting that the Puerto Rico DeLorean club evidently lent out the DMC car for the production, but they stated if they'd seen the script first, they wouldn't have lent it out..http://www.onepocket.org/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

Finally a Pixar Movie worthy of the hype. Why? Because it was relatively more sophisticated than their earlier movies. It had several relatively complex characters with well constructed motivations and without being dehumanized villains or simplistic heroes. The humor was also smarter than in previous Pixar movies and they actually started to really explore the absurdity of its fantastical world (such as grappling with the concept of how sentient toys become sentient). Overall the best Pixar movie since UP or perhaps even the best of all as it has their strengths without their weaknesses.

I knew (https://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?anchor=1&p=2041759#post2041759) I had something special the other night. This rating means this goes right to my favorite films of all time, and my favorite film this year so far (since I over evaluated my insomnia on Joker).
A film about something I'm experiencing, right across the ocean, in Porto, Portugal called gentrification, and you'll understand that makes me angry, and I don't like being angry. If I start talking about this film I'll never shut up, so I'll use my three favorite lines and just talk about them. One other reason for me to like this film is that I find it very Zen like, and one of the symbols of Buddhism is the lotus flower. The lotus flower grows in the swamps, and the thicker the swamp, the more the lotus will bloom, and I find that a very good unconscious analogy.
A guy hitchhiking Jimmy in a car he stole from him
'Cause see, Jimmie, you never really own sh*t. This car ain't mine. But it never was yours. You never own sh*t!
That's something I agree totally with, and that's one of the reason I don't get attached to material things. They aren't mine, nothing is. I never had a sense of ownership, of entitlement.
I believe that you could make this place yours. I really do. But if you leave it's not your loss. It's San Francisco's. F*ck San Francisco.
That's the biggest thing this people haven't yet understood, this people that prey on originality and genuineness, what made those places appealing in the first place are the ones the city is casting away. Out of there struggle and survival came pure and great creativity, out of those yoga practitioners, vegan eaters plastic people comes plastic, emptiness. There philosophies and rhetoric mean f*ck all, and they've understand that.
Dude, I've been saying for months, let's just move to East LA. This city's dead. Nah. Seriously, f*ck this city.
'Scuse me? You don't get to hate San Francisco.
I'm sorry, what? Yeah, dude, I mean... Sorry, but I'll hate what I want.
Do you love it?
It's... I mean yeah, I'm here. But do I have to love it?
You don't get to hate it unless you love it.
That's why I say this is very zen film, the yin-yang. I'll probably review this film years to come.

Well this was pretty cool! I knew next to nothing about Viktor Tsoi or Kino and thankfully it didn't matter. This is an excellent biopic on one of the founding and most influential Soviet rock movements. But its also so beautifully shot and filmed in black in white. Aside from the Kino tunes etc which were great, there's also music from Lou Reed, Bowie and a great scene involving Psychokiller by he Talking Heads. Recommend watching this one if you can.

El Camino
Loved it, but can't rate as it doesn't stand much as a movie on its own. You really need to have the Breaking Bad series under your belt before taking this one for a drive. I enjoyed it very much and thought it was a better end cap than the recent Deadwood finale, though completely unnecessary. I don't think anything happened that was important enough to justify its creation, but it was still nice to have one more episode to watch.
I am Wrath
Silly, silly, silly, but I enjoy me some revenge flicks! This one is full up on pointless violence, bad acting, and inexplicable decision-making but you get a great regular viewing of Travolta's hair plugs. When Christopher Meloni showed up, he just made the movie totally enjoyable fully aware of its B-level cheese. He played his part as straight as possible which, in and of itself, was almost comedic and I half expected a line reference to Happy!, the flying blue pixie unicorn thing. But that didn't happen, so... 2.5.
No Way Out
For the most part, this was a fun movie. A very young looking Kevin Costner plays Navy Lieutenant, Tom Farell who joins the Secretary of Defense staff by introductions through his old college buddy. Things turn foul when he becomes smitten with Susan Atwell (Sean Young) only to learn that she is also his boss' mistress. Seduction, mystery, murder, and a government conspiracy are all on Farell's shoulders when asked to investigate his lover's murder without implicating himself. It felt appropriate for its release date and was fun enough with the flirty charisma of both Costner and Young playing off of each other on screen. It was not as tight as say The Firm, but it was not bad at all. I was ready to toss it away when done, to quickly forget it but the last few minutes provided a very nice Gotcha! moment from out of nowhere. For that, it gets a decent 3.

'Joker' (2019)
https://cdn.collider.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/joaquin-phoenix-joker-movie-image-2-600x400.jpeg
OK so while it IS a pastiche of Taxi Driver and King of Comedy, it is also very well made. Phillips rather nails the dynamic of early 80s Gotham's uprising and the birth of Joker. J Phoenix is unsurprisingly excellent. What I liked about it was that the onus was put on character and human traits rather than ram home action scenes, superpowers and CGI.
There is one scene in particular (flashback to his mother in the asylum) that is chilling in it's sinister nature. And the violence that happens off screen is masterfully done, with the power of suggestion creeping into the viewer's mind very nicely. I don't buy into the whole comic book franchise movie scene but this did feel alot different.
The lovely teals and reds also help fit the sleazy underbelly atmosphere. Great sound design and score too...the gun shots sounded terrifyingly real. There are a couple of things that don't really add up, mostly script wise, but would be spoilery to mention, and would seem a bit petty as they don't really affect the whole film.

After.Life (2009)
Starring: Christina Ricci, Liam Neeson, Justin Long
This was really not what I expected though truthfully I didn't know what to expect. From the preview I thought either a warped serial killer using mind games to trick his victims into believing they are already dead or some sort of psychic who actually communicates with the dead that he cares for. After having seen the film I'm still not sure. It's kind of like that story of the lady and the tiger where she has to pick between two doors. Behind one door is a tiger that will kill her and behind the other is a way out. The story ends just as the door opens leaving the reader to wonder what happened or perhaps inviting the reader to finish the story however he/she wants. Either way, it was an enjoyable movie.

Didn't enjoy this very much at all and I'd say I liked about 20% of the film. I was fascinated by the early scenes as they're often like a contemporary handheld style. I liked the imagery with shadows separated from visible living bodies. Léone's leering is pretty scary – my initial thought was that the actress could be mimicking a bat – and the scene where she's lying back after being bitten stood out too as it reminded me of The Nightmare by Henry Fuseli.

This was f*ing METAL! 9.5/10
Perhaps the best movie in the "comic book" movie genre since Spider Man 2 (yes, I do think Spider Man 2 is the benchmark for the genre). Although this movie is like, completely different from all others in the genre, it might be closer to Logan but I think its more like Taxi Driver with a murderous lunatic character. I think that the movie could have been even stronger if it were slightly more subtle towards the last parts of it (which means it would have been a 10/10).
The quality of the performances and of the movie overall was sky-high. It was a very "tactile" experience: you really feel like this thing is happening for real. In that sense, it reminded me a bit of movies like Bicycle Thieves and Umberto D (except for the last 20 minutes or so). Overall, an almost flawless movie and certainly a great example that shows that Hollywood can still do the trick when it has too.

Yesterday (2019)
This is a cute basic alternative reality film which contains a charming boy/girl delayed love story of the type that was done so well in the 1940s and ‘50s.
With a story by Jack Barth, screenplay by Richard Curtis, and directed by Danny Boyle, the film stars Himesh Patel (East Enders), Lily James (Baby Driver), and a significant role for pop star Ed Sheeran.
It’s a compelling notion-- Jack Malik, a small time musician/singer (Patel) awakens to an alternative world where the Beatles (along with several other subjects) never existed. He eventually is drawn into representing many of the Beatles songs as his own, and basking in the world wide popularity it allows him. The production almost brings it off. Its weakness rests in the middle section where the writing fell flat. Reportedly Barth’s original story was a little darker, which may have lifted the picture a notch higher. Here, Malik’s cold-blooded new manager, although capably played by Kate McKinnon, was over acted and likely miscast.
As it is, Patel turns in a fine performance as actor and musician, impressively performing many of the featured Beatles’ songs. Lily James is as luminescent as she was in Downton Abbey, and Ed Sheeran gives a creditable treatment of a current pop star who gives way to Malik’s other-worldly song writing prowess.
The picture took a little too long to get to the payoff, while trying to tidy up the story line. They did manage to tease with several in jokes and double entendre song references, which were probably lost on a younger audience.
Still, the movie has an innocent young love feel to it, which most of us can relate to in our own experiences. The fantasy elements are clever and bring a smile to our faces.
Doc’s rating: 6/10
Rendel (2017)
A Finnish superhero film that blatantly borrows from Punisher, Daredevil and Mask. That alone wouldn't necessarily be that bad but Rendel is thoroughly incompetent and amateurish. The script makes no sense, direction is horrible, soundtrack is pretty much as cliched and generic as one can be, fights look like poorly choreographed professional wrestling and at least half of the actors seem to think the whole film is a joke (hard to blame them for being right though). On rare occasions the film gets bad enough to be funny so it gets ½ popcorn for it.

3.5-

Sequel and improvement to A Dog's Purpose. I can't imagine young children watching this because there are a lot of heavy themes, besides the usual dog stuff. It was so sad sometimes that it was unbearable to watch. My wife was crying the whole time and my dogs were spellbound. I am a sucker for these movies and I thought it was one of the better dog movies I've seen.

Opening Night (1977) by John Cassavetes
I am beginning to strongly appreciate the films of Cassavetes, though this was quite a tough watch with a running time of two and a half hours. Its still a really interesting take on stardom, acting and mental illness. Mostly recommended to fans of Cassavetes.

Not a bad tight little thriller, Sam Worthington is believeable as a father that's life is upended. Its well acted throughout though you're always waiting for the sucker punch. Had it been a bit more linear it could have been more enjoyable.

Shadows: The Eye (TV, 1976) 4/10
Good to hear a change of accent (Welsh) but the dip in form continues.
What was annoying in this one was the utter failure of the brother to see that something was amiss. The sister's almost in a trance and the father's pretty much on his way to being – both displaying a fey quality. More than once the brother experiences things that wouldn't make it easy to carry on peeling potatoes, which results in an inconsistent terror.
I feel like the 'haunting' should have gradually built up as the story progressed, and if only the acting had been less mannered and play-like, that could have oiled the wheels. The floral wallpaper is probably the scariest thing on view, and it was crying out for a bit of trickery to make the flowers spin, to add to the disorientation.
Series 3 next week and it will be interesting to see any differences after the two-year break.

He was asked a lot of autographs as he walked the streets of Porto and Lisbon and he always asked: 'Have you ever watched any of my movies?', he knew that someone who did would probably ask him questions not signatures. I know people have been pegging this as Mallick being back on form but it feels far too vague and wishy washy considering the subject matter. Yes the beautiful shots of the Austrian mountains are indeed beautiful, but that doesn't really matter when you only have the good Germans speaking in a language the viewer can understand. Really reminded me of that segment in Simularcra and Simulation when Baudrillard talks about how cinema erases history by, essentially, enforcing the Mandela effect. This is a very very beige look at Nazi Germany and we should aspire for much more critical insights into it. Yes there is a violent turn in the last 15 minutes, but even so this doesn't feel sufficiently critical. Really wanted to like this but alas, it disappoints.

Haven't heard that term before (reminds me of people assuming Alec Guinness had died because he 'dies' in Star Wars) but yeah, you've got to be on your guard. Given that one of my favourite films, Münchhausen, was commissioned by Joseph Goebbels, it's a state of experiencing films that I'm all too familiar with.

Very entertaining animated Spider Man movie. I would rate it as the best Spider Man movie since Spider Man 2 as it is easily superior to the super mediocre stuff made more recently featuring the character. However, it suffers from a set of problems: it is too self aware in that pseudo smart way and has too many politically correct features and storytelling cliches wrapped in it to be able to become a truly great film. Still very nice. 7/10

Joker 9/10. I had high hope from the movie and it delivered. Amazing performance.
It Happened in Broad Daylight (1958)
Chasing a child murderer gets little too personal for an aging detective. Somewhere between Psycho and M with even a little hint of gialli to come (at least the use of child's drawing brings Deep Red to mind and the premise of child murderer is quite common too). That's pretty big names to compare but fortunately It Happened in Broad Daylight is no slouch either.
The usage of psychology feels ahead of its time and the profiling of the child murderer is almost like in a modern film (it's a bit too accurate and from too little information but older films often seem to emphasize clarity and simplicity). Some things are bit too underlined or just introduces poorly (like the concept of bait by the fishing boy) but as a whole the story is rather good. Detective is played little flat considering his obsession about the case but otherwise acting is fine.
Not as great as some of the easy comparisons but definitely good old thriller.

Great recommendation this. Charting the adventures of Russian rock bands Kino and Zoopark and the underground rock scene in Leningrad in the 80s. I really enjoyed the musical interlude type scenes, and though I thought they were a gimmick at first, I ended up loving them and wanting more. It's a beautifully shot film that is at times funny, beautiful, quirky, whimsical, romantic and poignant. The tone of the film wavers but doesn't distract. It uses the semi biographical nature as a backdrop to the changes in the USSR. New regimes replacing old ones etc.I went in blind to this movie, and came out stunned. Agree with your rating - maybe even higher. One of the best of the year. Exceptional.

This lines represent my image of France. France reminds me a lot of United States, they're both founded on a cliche. And the cliche is beautiful, but is only viable for the few, not to the many. This film also remind me of the past. During the Portuguese crises we emigrated to France trying to find opportunities, that was the case of my father. These projects in the suburbs were the only place we could afford, the cultural diversity was shocking, completely different cultures, religions living in the same place. My father always said that France is a barrel of dynamite waiting for someone to spark the first light, we had a small demonstration not that long ago. The dark atmosphere, the photography in some scenes and the overall performances are the plus.

Joe is a film that wants to pretend to stand for something but doesn’t quite live up to its premise.
Seeing it again, after the earlier debate about violent film made me want to, only reinforces that belief.
It starts off with a fathers (Compton) revenge against his daughter’s (played with naive innocence by a young Susan Sarandon) boyfriend, who had supplied her with drugs that caused her to OD.
Afterwards, he meets Joe. Joe is your average (haha) racist, misogynistic, homophobic, gun toting lower class worker. (He is the character displayed prominently in the poster) He cuts a stark contrast to Compton, who is rich.
Despite their differences they get along, and the movie slips into a social commentary of sorts. (Lower class vs upper class, but even that is hardly touched upon)
All this leads up to the violent ending I have mentioned previously in another thread. I won’t spoil it, but the last freeze frame is meant to invite conversation about violence and it’s repercussions.
Unfortunately, the movie never delivers on it’s themes. And we never really get any actual insight into Compton.
2 out of 4.
I'm giving you a free pass on that "review".

Sleepaway Camp 2: Unhappy Campers and Sleepaway Camp 3: Teenage Wasteland, starring Pamela Springsteen as Angela Baker.
This was made at a time where dark humor was beginning to become a trope in late 80's horror films (ask "Chop-Top" Sawyer or Freddy Krueger from Nightmare on Elm Street 3 on) and writer Fritz Gordon (aka Michael Hitchcock) and director/producer Michael A. Simpson decided to inject the dark humor in the first of the two sequels, Sleepaway Camp 2: Unhappy Campers. Recently watching a documentary on the making of the original film, creator Robert Hiltzik revealed that he only licensed the name for the sequels as he pitched some ideas to Double Helix Films, but they opted to go a different direction.
Back to Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers, we learn that after the events of the original film, Angela Baker had checked in to a mental institution and during her time there, she underwent an operation where she is now fully female. Felissa Rose said in the documentary that she did audition to reprise the role and didn't find the humor in the role so she was happy to not return with Springsteen taking over. The kill scenes here are quite fun, taking elements of Blood Feast, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and even a dose of Texas Chainsaw Massacre in a homage scene where two male campers decide to prank Angela by disguising themselves as two iconic slashers only to get the tables turned when Angela, disguised as a third iconic slasher, puts both of them out of their misery. With the dark humor injected, Springsteen does IMO give it her all and even proves she doesn't need the name recognition (which apparently the cast didn't even know who her famous brother was until years later). She isn't the only one with a famous last name and family as the innocent camper Molly, who Angela bonds with, is played by Renee Estevez (who is the sister of Charlie Sheen and Emilio Estevez).

So this sequel I enjoyed....on the other hand...
Sleepaway Camp 3: Teenage Wasteland is a (pun totally intended) waste of a third installment. The film was shot back-to-back with Unhappy Campers, but it felt like it was more rushed and bland compared to either the original film and this second part. I can't blame Springsteen for her performance here. The issue lies in the rushed script and production. It does revolve a good idea in that the camp in the second film has been replaced with another camp. That's the good piece of things, as well as a connection to the second film as one of the counselors in a rehab program is the cop father of a victim of the 2nd film. However, the kill scenes are more average (with the exception of one IMO) and there aren't really any characters that seem to be completely sympathetic, even Tracy Griffith's Marcia's crush on a bad boy just seems "meh".
