Just what I hoped it would be and so much more.
I walked into Inherent Vice with high expectations, and walked out satisfied. I drove for 2 hours to go see this movie, and I thought that it was completely worth every second of the drive. From the opening shot to the final shot, I was completely hypnotized. I could not take my eyes off of the screen, I was in a complete and total trance, and even on the car ride home I was still in a trance. I cannot stop thinking about this film. It is one that stays with you for a long, long time. And now, it's time to talk about the story.
From basically the beginning of the film, I was confused by the story. The story is exceedingly complicated and strange. But, I completely enjoyed it and wanted more of it. Within the complicated, almost indecipherable storyline are interesting and complicated characters that you want to know more about, but are just left knowing a little bit. You don't learn everything about any one character, there's always that little bit of mystery in every character, making you want to revisit the film again to try and learn more about them. I am not even going to attempt to sum up the storyline, you'll just have to see it for yourself. it makes the film more fun not knowing what the basic storyline is. Afterall, the trailers did a really great job of not telling you what the story is. It makes for some great surprises and unexpected moments. A lot of the review snippets I've read on Flixster seem to be addressing the confusing storyline and the drugs, but I don't think that either of those things are the main focus of the film. The main focus, to me anyway, is the interesting characters, the funny moments, and the strange situations that Doc gets into. Your first time seeing the film, you don't have to completely understand the storyline, I sure didn't, but in the end I realized the brilliance of all that had happened before. I had a good, basic understanding of what the film was about and was glad that I had seen it. I also think that a lot of reviews leave out how dark the film really is at it's core. There are a LOT of unsavory characters and places. The world is dark, but exceedingly fascinating. The main character Doc Sportello is obviously a comedic character, but you can see a sadness in his eyes. It's easy to see that he's a layered character with many deep and complicated emotions, but do we ever see that side of him? Not really. But is this a bad thing? I personally don't think so. I think Doc partakes in these substances to try and hide from this side of himself, and to try and keep that side of himself hidden and tucked away inside. It works really well, because it leaves you wanting to know more about him. There are so many elements at play here, and I think that in order to address them all would take a long paper, not just a movie review. Inherent Vice has so much to explore. I just wanted to know more about every character, every location, every situation.. Inherent Vice leaves you wanting to go back, to see if you can discover more than what you found in your first viewing. Oh, and good luck getting this film out of your head after you've seen it.
I'd like to talk about the screenplay and dialogue now. I haven't even dicussed the comedic elements of the film yet. There are quite a few laughs in this film, and the zany and insane humor will appeal to some, but not all. For me personally, I was too enthralled in the story and the characters to pay too much attention to the comedy. I did laugh quite a few times though, and there are some extremely strange and hilarious moments. Some very strange things happen in this film, and they seem to come out of nowhere, but you learn to just roll with it and laugh, to not expect an explanation. Because strangely funny things happen in this life, and more often than not, we don't get an explanation of them. It is the same way with Inherent Vice. Expect to laugh, and expect to say "WTF was that??" I had a great time seeing what comedic mischief Doc would get into next, and what strange events might happen next. I think it's time to move on to acting.
Joaquin Phoenix gives a fantastic performance as Doc Sportello. His facial expressions, the way he delivers his lines, are spectacular, and hilarious. A slight facial twinge can send the audience up in laughter. He really does a great job of being our "hero", and while he has his problems and doesn't always do the "right thing" you still root for him throughout the movie, because he's likable and funny. He's a great vehicle to take us from place to place, from character to character, situation to situation. What can I say, Joaquin is great in this. He is in basically the whole movie, and if it wasn't a great performance, I wouldn't be raving so much about this film. And who knew that Joaquin could do comedy so well? He is, of course, also amazing in the serious scenes too. Ok enough about Joaquin, let's move on.
Joanna Newsom plays Sortilege, a strange and mysterious narrator. She is in the film visually for a very short time, but when she is on screen she's good. But her narration is what really shines. This is one of the more comfortable narrator voices I've heard. Her voice is very soothing and really helps to guide you through the film. The narration works very well for this film. Her narration lines are written beautifully and poetically, so it's not just someone telling us what's happening, it's told with style.
Katherine Waterston is absolutely fantastic in this film. She is a beautiful actress, and I haven't seen many films with her in them, but I am hoping that will change after Inherent Vice. Her story is one of the sadder and more serious parts of the film, but it is also one of the most emotionally compelling parts of the film. She plays a very saddened and emotionally complex character, and she does that very well. She gives a great performance, and one that is very memorable. I was truly surprised by her acting skill.
Josh Brolin is one of the funniest parts of the film. He plays a very strange cop nicknamed "Bigfoot". We learn some surprises about him later on in the film, but throughout the film, he does some crazy and hilarious things, and the chemistry between Brolin and Phoenix is great. They seemed to have a lot of fun with this movie, and anytime you see Brolin on screen you can expect laughter. I never knew he could be so funny, but he is.
Let's talk about camerawork. Robert Elswit is the cinematographer and the camerawork is on display much less in this film than any other Paul Thomas Anderson film. Nonetheless, the camerawork is still good. There are some really iconic locations in the film, and they're presented well visually. They did a great job of keeping the vibe of the seventies, and a lot of that is the visuals. There are some shots in the film that stick in your mind, and stay with you long after the film is over. So, the camerawork is great, but definitely less noticeable in this film than others. Still good though.
The music in Inherent Vice is another great aspect of the film. For a supposedly comedic film about the 70's and drugs, the music is surprisingly modern sounding and dark. Johnny Greenwood (who also composed the score of There Will Be Blood), did the soundtrack, and at the film's serious moments it really helps create a feeling of sadness and melancholy. During it's more lighthearted moments, there are more songs from the 70's giving it a real 70's vibe. Also, the music helps to instill an atmosphere of paranoia throughout the film keeping the audience nervous for the characters and what might happen to them.
It may be surprising, and you may think me crazy, but I thought that Inherent Vice was a masterpiece. I wouldn't call this a perfect film, but then again, I can't think of anything that I really didn't like about it. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it, and for a comedy, it really leaves you thinking for a long time after it's over. Paul Thomas Anderson has shown the great heights that he can reach with comedy. He has shown how he can transform dramatic actors into a comedic hilarities. I wouldn't even call this a film, I would call this an experience. I experienced Inherent Vice, and I want to experience it again. After the film is over, you find yourself thinking "Was I just in a movie theater, or was I in a different world?" The dialogue is sharp and witty. There also some beautiful and poetic lines of dialogue in the film too. The characters seem real, and the film seems like a real world. Just like you can't expect to leave this life with all of your questions answered, and you can't expect the same from Inherent Vice. But to know everything there is to know about the film and the world would ruin the mystery and the thrill of it. Inherent Vice is a journey, an adventure, and an experience. I don't regret seeing it for a second, and I want to see it again very soon. I highly, highly recommend Inherent Vice.

A Child Is Waiting (Cassavetes) - 8/10 - I know Kramer had the final cut, and that Cassavetes choked him for it, but this is still a great movie, and feel it could have been much greater if J.C. would have had the last word. He wanted to concentrate on the retarded children, while Kramer wanted to highlight Lancaster and Garland (two biggest names J.C. ever worked with).
One of the most touching movies I've seen. All the performances are great, especially Garland.

Does more for me then any other PTA film. Not saying much though. As loopy as The Big Sleep, but with more boobs and drugs. Don't try to make sense of the plot the first time over. The acting is great, and the camera work is on point, but still does not do that much for me. Ultimately a good movie, but not great.

Saw this on cable last night. It's an Australian production and I thought it was going to be one of those "found footage" movies, but it played more like a documentary/mystery/ghost story. I found it to be a very good scary-type movie. It plays out with a drowned teen's parents who talk on film about their daughter's accident, whether it was an accident, who may have been involved, if the daughter is now haunting her parents, is that her that is showing up in photos taken around the house or is someone hoaxing them, how is a local psychic involved? The movie is not one of those out-and-out scare fests, but it's eerie, takes it time telling the story, and leaves you with a fairly satisfying resolution. Recommended.
This is a photo from the movie that is apparently an image of the dead girl haunting her house...(hint, it's blurry on purpose)

Whiplash (2014, Damien Chazelle)

A truly intense, fervent slice of filmmaking. This turns jazz into a ruthless bloodsport. The towering screen presence of Teller and Simmons place aside, this film has to be one of the best, purely from an editorial standpoint, in quite some time. This is how you build a sense of inexorable anxiety and strain - each cut just nervously adding to the next. So often throughout the viewing it felt like you were behind the drums, in Andrew's position, anxiously playing whilst Fletcher was stalking each and every auditory note, ready to pounce in vexation if you blundered. And the use of sound was impeccable - who would've thought jazz music could be so fanatical and daunting when placed in this context? And it was a directorial debut? And the director is barely 30? Am I dreaming? It's seriously a fantastic work - riddled with tension and restlessness throughout, with a remarkable closing act. Oh, and I see Chazelle's returning to the world of jazz with Miles Teller again for La La Land (2015)? Yes please. I can not recommend this enough. I've always loved Simmons, but he took it to new levels here - in fact, the he seems to adopt the same deceitful unpredictability and eccentricity as the memorable Vern Schillinger in Oz. This is, perhaps, my favourite film of 2014, and one of the best American films of the last 10-15 years.

This is a Civil War Western with some pretty significant talent involved. It's directed by Sam Peckinpah, and the cast includes Charlton Heston, Richard Harris, James Coburn, Warren Oates, Brock Peters, Ben Johnson, Slim Pickens, etc. I was really digging the first half of this, but the second half, not so much.

I absolutly loved the movie. It wasn't just all about the war/Army, the family was a big part of the film as well and the historical events in it made it feel more realistic. The movie suceed with showing how cruel war is not only to the men involved but to the world in general. It changes people, it makes you do things you wouldn't have thought of doing in your worst nightmares. It ****s you up and changes your perspective of the world and life, of people, of what's worth and what isn't, of what is fair and what is admitted to do, what isn't. What real courage is, when to quit, when to stop, but it always stays with you.
At least this is how the movie made me feel. So yes I loved it haha :)
I also have to admit I cried. Even though I normally don't like this type of films

Walk the Line (2005)
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/5/5a/Walk_the_line_poster.jpg
With: Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon
It's a biographical drama film based on the life of Johnny Cash (country/rock artist)
I like how this film didn't try to make of Johnny Cash a good guy, with deep reasons and twists to act and do what he does. Sometimes life just turns out that way and you see yourself in a path you never thought you'd see yourself in. Sometimes you don't realize you're in such path unless someone else points it out.
I think the actors did an awesome job, and the movie sucees in recreating their life, how it was, with their ups and downs and good moments. I think it was a masterpiece within it's own genre.

Aka. Order of the Grail (UK), El Capitán Trueno y el Santo Grial (ESP)
Hard to believe this has only a 3/10 average rating on IMDb, I guess a lot of viewers must really dislike Spanish language films (although apparently the US DVD does include an English dub, although why anyone would want this I don't know).
Based on a classic Spanish comic book, this is the story of a soldier fighting during the crusades who receives the Holy Grail and is sent back to Spain to take it to safety, only to be attacked by a mysterious group who want it for an unholy ceremony. A proper old fashioned yarn, coming across like a blend between the Ray Harryhausen Sinbad films and Scorpion King, there is nothing particularly original about the story, but it is highly enjoyable. Direction is stunning, it has a sleek Hollywood feel to it, while retaining a European art-house look at times, even the occasional CGI looks impressive. The only flaw is a slightly rushed end to the climax and an over-long wrap-up sequence.

He might be "boring" as his movies are rather slow but his pictures are so well composed imo. For me personally Red Desert from 1964 is my favorite. Expect a rather depressing film surrounded by beautiful composed shots of industrial landscapes. It was screened on the Copenhagen Architecture X Film festival on 35 mm last year.

When you have Jason Statham in an action it is most of the time worth a watch, this is worth a watch but the story seemed all to convenient. There are some decent actors in this movie... well people who can act at least. Without spoiling too much about the plot everything just seemed to fall into place way too easy for both protagonist and antagonists. It was written by Sly Stallone and it seemed more like some generic script him thought of over a few beers. It is still watchable it you just want to switch your mind off for 90 mins and watch something.

I thought this was a pretty unusual and interesting movie. A couple spend time in a California desert town alternating between having arguments and having sex. This is all that happens for the film's first 95 minutes. It's dull, but at the same time strangely captivating. The last 15 minutes bring an unexpected and shocking conclusion, making this film quite memorable, sort of like the movie Fat Girl. Most people would not like this movie.

Although the cast as a whole comes off a bit more coolly than most other biopics, the principle three - David Oyelowo, Tom Wilkinson and Tim Roth - are as magnificent as could be hoped for. Oyelowo's prosletizing is an incredible aural reconstruction that, at least to me, perfectly matched King's own orations. And, oddly enough, the most strikingly memorable scene of the film was not King speaking nor marching, but Johnson and Wallace quietly squaring off against one another in the Oval Office.

This was not as bad as I had feared by any means. For a straight-to-video release, this would have been an exceptional film. Sadly, it was a theatrical release, meaning that its simplistically rendered characters, overly complicated script, substandard animation, obnoxiously unnecessary side characters and tendancy to gloss over major character development with montages (featuring unimpressive Phil Collins songs) cannot be so easily forgiven. It's not bad by any means, but doesn't fully warrant its own existence at the same time.

Brother Bear - 5.5/10
This was not as bad as I had feared by any means. For a straight-to-video release, this would have been an exceptional film. Sadly, it was a theatrical release, meaning that its simplistically rendered characters, overly complicated script, substandard animation, obnoxiously unnecessary side characters and tendancy to gloss over major character development with montages (featuring unimpressive Phil Collins songs) cannot be so easily forgiven. It's not bad by any means, but doesn't fully warrant its own existence at the same time.
Huh? Expand on this.

Huh? Expand on this.
Substandard for Disney, at least. The characters were very simply rendered and what should have been truly awe-inspiring visuals (like the Aurora Borealis) were ultimately underwhelming. I've seen Disney make stills of stained glass look dynamic and exciting, and this made the vast interplay between the mortal and spiritual planes look sparce and murky.

I disagree. The characters very much look like Disney 2D characters to me, especially those found in other Disney films of the time, like Lilo & Stitch. I'm also not at all sure why you think "the interplay between the mortal and spiritual planes" should be crisp and clear like the edges of the various pieces in a stained glass window.
I would've found it strange had the spirits been drawn to look anything like you suggest. They're spirits, not flesh and blood. And looking at images of the real aurora borealis, I'm not seeing sharply defined edges in the colors. They're blurred and hazy, much like what was depicted in the film.

God I love this movie! I completely forgot how intense the last 30 minutes get. So much to love about this film, not only is the acting and story telling from Spacey top notch, but the way everything continues to build up to a massive climax is purely astonishing.

Twentynine Palms (2003) 3.5
I thought this was a pretty unusual and interesting movie. A couple spend time in a California desert town alternating between having arguments and having sex. This is all that happens for the film's first 95 minutes. It's dull, but at the same time strangely captivating. The last 15 minutes bring an unexpected and shocking conclusion, making this film quite memorable, sort of like the movie Fat Girl. Most people would not like this movie.

Stauffenberg aka Operation Valkyrie (2004)
A German TV film made for the 60th anniversary of the attempted coup that pre-dates the better known Hollywood film. Obviously aimed at a German audience who would be well versed in this fascinating chapter of history, there is not much explanation going on here - characters are briskly introduced and there is little build up to the operation. While certainly accurate, the Hollywood film is similarly adherent to the historical facts but also includes a lot more background detail and character development.
Shot on a much smaller scale, this does have the advantage of firstly being in German and secondly lacking the Hollywood sheen which makes the scenes, particularly the chaotic sequences in the Bendlerblock, feel a lot more authentic.
It seems odd to be saying that a German television production of the story is outshone by a Hollywood film, but that is the case here. Still this television film is of interest for those who know the background and its more authentic feel is a plus.

Waltz With Bashir (Forman) - 5/10 - Ok.. Portrayed terrorists (Israeli Army and Leaders) in a pretty good light. I'd wish the director didn't feel he had to shield "his team."
The moment the "switch" happens, it got more emotional. I looked at the special features, and the first thing the director said was something like "Which evokes more emotions, animation or film" - and very clearly, it's real video. Animation consist of computers, and I need the human stuff. I don't see myself watching any animation stuff in the future... I loved Persepolis and Waking Life, but there are plenty of great films that I will give a chance to first that have humans.

12 Years a Slave
Hmmmm don't really know where to begin, first time watching, I did enjoy the movie but it seemed so hyped up at the time of release. I think the strongest character in the film was Michael Fassbender by far he was just a tyrant (which is intended), I really didn't feel the brutality of slavery in the film however. Boy with the stripped pajamas to me had more impact i felt, 2 different subjects I am aware but still about injustice to humanity by other humans. Also Lupita Nyong'o was also brilliant and if I was in her position I would have asked the same from Solomon. That is where I felt more about slavery rather than from Chiwetel. I don't really feel this should have got best picture, being nominated would have still made me watch it but just didn't feel it should have received the top prize. I think by now that this is a topic that many people worldwide are aware of so I didn't understand within the hype that stated this was a movie well overdue. Also I think one of the strongest scenes for me was when the random woman (slave) basically got Solomon to preform a sexual act for her to receive some comfort/pleasure.

Kingdom Come A horror film that a friend of mine was the Grip / Gaffer on, so I only watched it out of support.
A lot better than I was expecting, but still not a good movie by any means. A bunch of people wake up in an abandoned hospital with no idea how they got there. They soon discover they are being chased after sine sort of demons, why???? The mystery isn't really mysterious, nor are the surprises. The film has an interesting story, but the budget and acting distract from it.

It's Such a Beautiful Day - 7.5/10
This could probably best be described as uncomfortably hilarious; I laughed all the way through to the ending, to the point where it helped to deal with the depressive thoughts and actions of one poor schlub and the increasingly bizarre and horrible things that happen to him despite himself. Even if it's not a favorite of mine, it's so intensely different from what I'm used to seeing, and succeeds so extremely well at being its own entity, that I've already recommended it to half a dozen people.

Seven Samurai - 10/10
I really wish that I would have found the time to see this before starting my Top 100 list, because this would have certainly made my top 15, if not nudging into my top 10. It develops its extremely broad cast of characters shockingly well over its 3 1/2 hour run-time, and is paced as perfectly as Schindler's List (to where I didn't even notice how incredibly long it was until near the end). I am also amazed by Kurosawa's delicate use of light and shadow, creating a series of shots that are strikingly distinct and memorable long before anything actually happens within them. This is not just my favorite Kurosawa film, but my favorite Asian film overall. It's far superior to the never-the-less high quality remake The Magnificent Seven.

trendy to not like this movie right now, and that's cool. this thinking will probably go on for a little while. i believe there will come a time where folks will revere it again. the only other Caped Crusader that belongs with this one is Batman (1989), for me. only type of Batman that might could outdo these is if you went full Bat-Noir and resurrected Orson Welles to play Bruce Wayne

Is it? I've not actually seen anything especially negative thrown at this movie since its release (barring those that just blanketly dislike action / superhero / Nolan movies). The Dark Knight Rises seems to catch a lot of flack (for the unspeakable crime of being just okay) and Batman Begins gets its fair share down the pipeline, but The Dark Knight seems pretty well beyond reproach (at least going off of what I've been privy to).

Well I knew this was a very hyped movie going into watching it. But I had some concerns. First of which I was concerned the whole "made over 12 years" thing would be cool for a little bit but then get old and the story would be substandard. I was also concerned that I would not connect with it since it is a coming of age film which I had difficulty connecting with as I get closer to 30. Some of my concerns were true. The 12 year thing I got over about 90 minutes in, but part of that was being drawn into a legit good story. I admit it was pretty impressive to see this film unfold about a year or so at a time and watch this kid grow up. Even more impressive is the fact that the kids' acting remains very good throughout. I mean you get a guy like Ethan Hawke, you have a good actor. But to have a 6 year old kid be a good actor, change to a teenager, and still be on board to the project and still put in the same legit effort. That does say a lot about Linklater as a director. I also liked the bits where he deliberately dates the movie in certain years. I can say, "Oh look I remember when DBZ's Buu saga was on Toonami. I know what year that was." Or "That was an election year." It did help with the narrative flow for me. Either way it was a very ambitious project that payed off for Linklater. We shall see if it gets him some Oscar love.

It's an entertaining movie. I think because it was filmed over 12 years it's going to win an Oscar. It probably tells me that the other movies are horrible, the standards are so low, that any pretty good picture can win.

Not only do I disagree with your assessment of Boyhood, but I especially agree with your second paragraph.
Watch Birdman, one of the most inventive and creative films in recent years, very unique and special in a different way to Boyhood. Then there's Foxcatcher featuring fantastic performances and a haunting story, Whiplash which I haven't seen but is getting rave reviews, The Grand Budapest Hotel which is delightful, and many others that I am happy to see challenging Boyhood.

Every bit as beautiful, imaginative and emotionally satisfying as I hoped it would be. Wong Kar Wai truly seems to be a director that completely fits my personal tastes. I always get extremely captivated with the mood and world he creates. His period pieces are particularly gorgeous. This story is set at the end of the '60s in Hong Kong and it features a few sci-fi sequences in between (the main character is a writer and is working on a sci-fi novel). The film plays like a romantic and tragic visual essay about the passing of time. I loved it!

Magic in the Moonlight, 2014
Dir: Woody Allen
A very dull and uninspiring film about what is supposed to be the gaiety of magic and illusion. It is centered on this classic debate: faith and fantasy vs. skepticism and reality. Woody Allen tends to mock the arrogant, cynical pseudo-intellectual who covers his/her insecurities with the illusion of knowledge and substance. This time, I can't help but think that this movie is that same pseudo-intellectual, only in audiovisual form. On the surface it is smart and complex, but take away all of the layers of eloquent dialogue and pretty cinematography and you'll find it to be much emptier and shallow than it pretends to be. Even Allen's wit and comedic fluency are not at its prime here; the humor does not make up for its emptiness and vice versa. It is not however, a completely mediocre movie (or as mediocre as I've made it seem in this review). It is still better than your average romantic comedy and can be quite entertaining at times, but put it next to the many other Woody Allen gems and you'll find that Magic in the Moonlight is destined to be a mere blip in his lengthy, brilliant filmography.

I liked this better the 12 Years a Slave. It has a better narrative, better story, and in my opinion a better director. But that being said my issues on 12 Years a Slave lie with the artistic way the film was told. This film my issue is with it's history.
1. LBJ is shown here not 100% behind the movement. Did LBJ and Dr King have disagreements? Damn straight they did. The movie was right on the disagreements between King and LBJ on Vietnam and The War on Poverty. But LBJ was not one to try and hold back the civil rights movement.
2. J Edgar Hoover is not even portrayed as Dr Kings biggest threat in DC (which he was). He is barely in the movie and Johnson is shown having Hoover go after King for him. Which is also BS. Hoover went after King because he thought he was a communist. LBJ actually pulled Hoover aside and had him set his sights on a new target... the KKK instead of King.
3. George Wallace makes a comment on "redistribution of wealth" which to my current recollection was not a big issue for old Dixiecrats. Way to try and insert current politics into a history film.
There are a few other things that bugged me like that ending song over the credits. So this movie does have very significant flaws. It tells a good story, but flunks history. I put this in the same category of Oliver Stone's JFK in that regard. Watch it with huge grain of salt. But the acting on the part of the main key players like Dr King was spot on.

Finally saw it and enjoyed it thoroughly. Very much in keeping with the rest of Wes Anderson's films: wacky, off-kilter, very funny, and bittersweet. Lots of great actors filling out the cast, a lot of them from other Anderson films. But the star of the film is of course Ralph Fiennes, who plays the very refined concierge of the Grand Budapest excellently, going from genteel most of the time to angrily cussing his opponents. I wish he'd gotten an Oscar nomination for Best Actor, but you can't win 'em all. Great movie.

Now this is a biopic! This cuts into who Chris Kyle was as a person as well as a warrior. You see how he joins the SEALS, his time in the sandbox, his time at home, and how his time in country affects his life at home. A portrait of a man of duty torn between love of country, his fellow servicemen, and his family. Plenty of action and lots of heavy drama in the quiet moments. Touching on a very real and very serious problem of PTSD. If you can see it in IMAX like I did, do it. The man was a true American hero. And this movie reflects that.

Touching on a very real and very serious problem of PTSD. If you can see it in IMAX like I did, do it. The man was a true American hero. And this movie reflects that.
RIP Chris Kyle.

I don't want to sound like a d*ck and maybe this is a debate for another thread, but he seems like a strange and conflicted pathological liar to me, and I'm concerned about how the film will come across. Don't some of the stories relating to him and his lies concern you? However I've discussed such concerns with my brother and he says whatever you think of the man, the film is a great directed piece of work, so I'm still looking forward to it.

Well from what I've been reading a lot of the stories he has been telling haven't been true. The Jesse Ventura stuff which everyone seems to hate Ventura for, the gas truck incident, killing looters after Hurricane Katrina, and apparently his promise to donate profits from his book to veterans, although I don't know much about that one. As I said, I haven't seen the film, and a lot of this might be related PTSD or other issues you'll inevitably face when in such a position.

I am familiar with the Jesse Ventura situation where there was discussion of a fist fight at a SEAL funeral. Jesse allegedly said something stupid and Kyle is said to have punched him out. What most people hate about Ventura (other then he is a whack job conspiracy theorist), is that he sued Kyle over telling the story on a radio show, and then sued the man's widow once he was killed. That is why people hate Ventura.
The gas truck incident was shooting two dudes in self defense after they tried to car jack him. As for why certain people can't get surveillance footage from the cops I can't comment. The New Orleans looters controversy I only heard of off some shall we say unreliable sources on the internet. And I never heard of the fourth one.
Now I can't comment on Kyle the person since I never met the guy. But his service record speaks for itself. And the film focuses on that and his family. I am making my judgement about the film off that.
This exploitation classic has a sensual scene of goat-rape, but it's not particularly shocking or exciting.

OK sure, I felt like a d*ck after posting because I know you liked the movie and your also a proud American, I don't mean it as a personal attack on you or him, or whatever, I just think it's interesting as I've read a lot of stuff about him regarding his book and the film, so I'm interested in seeing it. And yeah I get that is why people hate Ventura but if the incident never actually occurred (which it has been found to have not in the court of law) then I think he is entitled to sue as Kyle would have made money for it, although I understand why people would be upset. I think I picked the wrong post to respond to, to post my thoughts. Like this is more just a discussion on the man and war himself than a response to anything you said :p
I think from what I have read that these 'stories' that can not be proved, mainly come from a drive to be recognised as a hero and also to reinforce that he is the one doing the good thing, protecting his country. From what I've read he seems to be hiding more of an inner conflict and dealing with problems in his own way whilst on the face of it he appears to be professional. I've read that he regretted no killings, and he didn't seem to have any sympathy for any families or such, even that he looted homes, I don't know how normal that is, but it must be difficult to live with. I'm not saying this forbids him from being a hero, I still think he is, if you wanted a man fighting for your country in that role then you'd want him to be like Kyle, whether you like it or not. I don't particularly agree with a lot of things regarding war, but when it comes to troops out there with their only goal to protect you, you support them.
And as I said, my brother watched the film and I explained to him why some people are kicking up a fuss, and he said that he doesn't get it, that once you go into the film and watch it, he doesn't understand why people don't recognise it as a great piece of film making, he loved it. I'm going to the cinema on Sunday I think to watch it with my friend, and I'll report back what I think.

Inherent Vice
4
An adaption of the book by Thomas Pynchon. Inherent Vice is yet another win for director Paul Thomas Anderson, it's packed to the brim with wackiness. A mix of the neo-noir, crime, drama and comedy genres, the events that occur are hard to make of but thinking should come afterwards, enjoy it for what it is (at that very moment). The authentic 70s look and vibe is just that, it doesn't feel imitated like many of today's films, PTA aimed to be nostalgic and Inherent Vice definitely reminded of funky flicks from a bygone era (The Long Goodbye for one).
One of the genres I mentioned was a comedy and that may seem out of place but the film is (unintentionally?) a hilarity ride. Doc Sportello is our mysterious protagonist and his mind is our cinema screen, full of hallucinations and other trippy images make for an interesting and effective character study. Inherent Vice leans over to being more character-driven than plot-driven. The supporting characters were out of their depth compared to the main, all are equally iniquitous so they come off as "weird for the sake of weird". PTA's drug world is crafted with a good sense of creativity and stepping without caution, you may find yourself immersed into it more than you'd want.
PTA's script is an account on deceit with cunning comicality and shaky thrills. It's never boring and constantly off-the-wall fun, the cinematography is stylish and it's great to see PTA's way in execution (which doesn't borrow too much from other famed directors like his previous films).
Joaquin Phoenix is quite sensational as the protagonist and adds another great performance to a fast growing list. Phoenix is faithful to his character's frequently drugged out state and delivers. Brolin had the role of a fun gimmicky character. Owen Wilson was as good as he'd ever get, Reese Witherspoon was naturally classy and Katherine Waterston added coherence to a fuzzy story with her straight-forward act. Second best by a wide margin.
All in all, Inherent Vice is a fun, wacky nostalgia ride. Fanatics of yesteryear cinema will appreciate it as a cool throwback with a fine underlay of humor.

Boyhood (2014)
Finally got to see this one.
Good coming-of-age film, and I do appreciate the backstory of it being 12 years in the making using the exact same actors. But It's just not as great as critics and the rest of the world is making it out to be.
For one thing, I found the acting to be a little too dry, especially from Ellar Coltrane, with the exception of Patricia Arquette and Ethan Hawke, who were both outstanding.
I know the movie will most likely win the Oscar this year, along with its director Richard Linklater, but I don't feel that is worthy of it.

A Phillip J. Roth SyFy Channel film Dark Relic starring James Frain
A good central concept - Knights returning from the Crusades with a piece of the true cross having to battle off dark forces seemingly intent on its destruction. There are some good set-pieces - they have to fight off possessed Monks in one very enjoyable scene - yet much of the rest feels underdeveloped. A big deal is made of the loss of faith of the lead character, Sir Gregory, after seeing so much death in the Crusades, but then they add in a young woman who is a vocal atheist, in a very modern manner, that seems completely out-of-place and really quite annoying. CGI effects are also surprisingly poor, even for a SyFy Channel films.
Watchable but not recommended.

Inherent Vice (Anderson) - Disappointing. There's only two young directors I like nowadays, him and Linklater, and their latest efforts have been very subpar. They'll make money I'm sure, I think that was their goal.
Paul should have put Robert Altman in his movie, just have him lie there. If he was trying to make a modern day "The Long Goodbye" he did a bad job. I'm surprised I only saw one character from an Altman film, but then again, it's 2015, he's running out of Altman's actors. Having said that, "There Will Be Blood" is still a Top 5 all-time for me, and Magnolia is a Top 50.

Haven't seen Inherent Vice myself, but people need to start making original reasons up to beat PTA over the head with. Whether it's positive or negative people seem to imply that PTA is an Altman clone, maybe he is i've only seen Gosford Park from the latter so i can't really say but if i was to bring similar comparisons to every director including Altman himself, i'm pretty sure discussing movies wouldn't be fun anymore since it would lead us back to the 1890s.

All About Eve (1950)
At last I've seen the movie I've heard about most of my life from both movie lovers and critics alike as one of the great films, and I must agree now. I'm sure most people know the story now about the great stage actress being usurped by her one-time admirer turned understudy. The cast is stellar, including Bette Davis, Anne Baxter, Celeste Holm, Gary Merrill, George Sanders, Hugh Marlowe, Thelma Ritter, and a young Marilyn Monroe. I bought this on Blu-Ray sight unseen and was not disappointed.

Other people say he tries to be a clone of Altman, I'm just going by specifics, and I don't think he is an Altman clone.
Actually PTA mentioned this on his podcast which I just watched after viewing Inherent Vice. He admits he borrows, and I respect that.
Back to the film... It's just a hazy, drunken, stoned kind of film. As I said, he has two masterpieces, so I have high expectations for him. I didn't see anything special in I.V. I didn't get emotions, just a lot of drug talk. I also don't care for detective stories, spending so much time talking about drugs..

Went on a bit of a movie marathon over the weekend, here are the titles I watched;
Clue - 4.5 / 5
Brilliant acting and the subtle inclusion of humour made this movie really enjoyable and easy to watch. Classic whodunnit!
A Few Good Men - 4.5 / 5
Great cast and solid performances from all involved. Intense courtroom drama at its finest!
The Maze Runner - 3.5 / 5
This one caught me a bit by surprise. Decent storyline and I really like the concept. You do get a good sense of fear watching the characters take on the maze. Overall, a good watch.
Scream - 4 / 5
Classic horror and a brilliant movie in my opinion. There's nothing else I can say that hasn't already been expressed in the epic retrospective thread that analyses this film in great detail.
The Ring - 4.5 / 5
Another "must have" in anyone's horror movie collection! The Ring really brings it with the creepy scenery and cold use of colour in just about every frame. I think this movie has just about one of the best story lines going around. You really do feel like you're joining the main character on her search for answers, and the whole mysterious nature of the film keeps you firmly in your seat. A great movie!

Also, just finished Big Hero 6:
A lot better than I was expecting and in my opinion, earns its Best Animated Feature nod. It had a great cast of characters, good animation design, great laughs and it was entertaining. The villain looked cool too, which is a plus for me.

Taking a break from a gangster movie binge. Viewed on a new sparkling BIG ol' amazing Sony TV. Felt like seeing it for the first time again with the vibrant colors, BLASTING cannons, rum runners, & 17-year old Keira Knightley with digitally enhanced breasts. Obviously love this flick, it's what got me into movies. Maybe there are some things that could've been done better, *maybe*, nobody's perfect. Yet i started thinking about it, and i like how Johnny Depp wanted his pirate to be like a rockstar. He used Keith Richards as some of his inspiration, who went on to join him in the sequels as his pops. Idea is, pirates are like rockstars, folks in town talk about their legends and escapades, which may or may not be total fish stories. Like Capt Sparrow being viciously mutinied upon by his old crew and deserted on an island left to die, how did he escape? Sea turtles, mate, sea turtles. http://oi57.tinypic.com/2l887ly.jpg Ergo honoring this movie is equivalent to celebrating a great rockstar, therefore, & in honor of our Caribbean voodoo brothers

I watched these two recently:
Last Vegas - 1.5/5
Great cast of course but the script was nothing special. These actors were probably just looking to have a good time together and didn't care of the quality of the film itself.
American Beauty - 4.5/5
First time seeing this. It was excellent. Spacey is a phenom. The only thing before watching about this movie that I knew about it was the opening shower scene with himself. That's all anyone talks about when they've mentioned the movie. It was funny but so much more to this film.

Evil in materialism is tyler's dogma, which is ultimately rejected by norton. I think it's about the internal struggle to define our own schema, to interpret and control the world around us. Others believe there are a lot of homosexual undertones.

The third television sequel to the classic 1967 war film is not as weak as the first Next Mission, but not as good as Deadly Mission, even an absurdly explosive climax cannot make-up for a mission that makes no sense.

Big Hero 6, 3.8/5. It's a fairly good movie, but I think it's also over hyped. The fact that it got nominated for animated film of the year doesn't surprise me, but I can't say it deserves it. The characters and story are more like a typical kids film rather than a superhero one and while I of course understand that's is an american made animated film, so child antics and appeal are expected, any number of other films can and have done what this one did. It's kind of a letdown compared to other animated superhero films I've seen. The animation is amazing and the voice acting was also really good, but the rest fell upon the typical format for a film like this. Despite my complaints though, it does have it's moments in both comedy and touching moments for characters, but it just could have been more. I'll probably buy it when gets released.on Blu-ray, but it's still nothing over the top special.

American Sniper (2014)
My review of this movie is divided between historical accuracy and artistic value.
From the historical standpoint, the movie plays like a propaganda piece, or a recruiting advertisement, for the US military. The movie glorifies the military's heroics in a war that was unjustified and built on lies that the Bush administration made to the American people. The bad guys in the movie, known by US media at the time as "insurgents", are one dimensional and not acknowledged as a resistance group fighting a military force that had invaded their land and country. But yet again, Clint Eastwood, a renowned champion for the Republican Party, is the director of the film, so the lopsided patriotic sentiments expressed in the film are understood.
For that, I give the movie 2
Now from the artistic standpoint, the movie is a breath-taking cinematic experience. The war scenes are intense (think Saving Private Ryan), and the acting is even more intense. Bradley Cooper plays Chris Kyle with such flair and sincerity that an Academy Award nomination is well-deserved.
For that I give the movie 4.5
By averaging out the score, the movie earns an overall rounded-up rating of 3.5

Astro Boy (2009)
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/e/e0/Astro_boy_ver7.jpg
I didn't expect much of this movie. It received mediocre ratings, I had not heard of it before picking it out on some list somewhere, it was made by a studio I've never heard about; in short, it wasn't measuring up to be anything particularly memorable. I am glad to say I was pleasantly surprised.
I don't know how it compares to the source material, but on its own it's a pretty powerful rollercoaster of emotions. The story is of a young boy whose dad is a leading scientist in a futuristic society. He one day disobeys his father and comes to visit him at work to see his latest experiment. The experiment goes wrong and... the boy is killed. His grieving father then goes on to construct a robot replica of his dead son and programs it with the DNA and memories of his son. Some time later he realizes this was a mistake which causes him a lot of pain and throws the robot boy away, who now needs to find his place in the world.
It has to be said that there's not much to shout about in terms of originality. There are themes from many other movies which are, for example: Iron Man, I Robot, Robots, AI and such.
Still, that doesn't mean the movie is boring. If anything, it's one of the more touching movies I've ever seen and that counts for something. If I was to be picky, I'd say that the movie should have been a little bit more light-spirited, considering that the target audience are little kids.

Such a shame 2061 and 3001 will probably never be made in my lifetime.
Given the popularity of 'thinking space movies' in the last year I think they are more probable now than for a long time.
However, I imagine that they would have to remake the first two as well and that will lead to a lot of feather-spitting.
I wonder if an HBO style TV series would be a better medium - people are more tolerant of texts being remade if they move between media and it would avoid people comparing them too closely.

Barefoot in the Park (1967) 3
From the top 100 passions list is this rom-com with a very good Robert Redford, and a cute and funny Jane Fonda. It's not about a whole lot, but the two leads make it work. I would've recommended it to gbgoodies, but I see from her list that she's seen it.

John Wick
Probably one of the best movies I have seen in a while in the action genre. One of the best badass characters in a movie for a while as well. The story was pretty solid but nothing new other than a revenge story but I was intrigued. Keanu was his usual monotone self but it suited the character he played. The other characters around him were the ones telling you more about John Wick which I thought was a good concept. He does speak much and that made him calculating. It would be in my top 15 action films of all time, I just really liked the film.

Well not as good as The Conjuring but it was still solid. I liked the back story and how it tied in with The Conjuring, I was hoping for a cameo from Vera and Patrick but oh well. The one thing I didn't like was the ending though, I am not going to spoil anything but it felt anti-climatic. The scares were pretty consistent throughout and people with children would probably feel more scared. Overall a pretty decent movie and I would probably rewatch late at night for a good thrill.

Nightcrawler
Probably one of my most hated characters on screen thus far I have seen in a film. I know you are not meant to like him but he made me want to jump in the screen and kill him! How Jake Gyllenhaal got snubbed for a best actor Oscar is beyond me, he embodies this character and makes you hate him. Overall the movie felt like it really had no plot and the story was a bit thin. I could describe it as a story about nothing with a character to love to hate. I wish I had his bargaining power though, seems to get what he wants 90% of the time.

The Call (2013)
I actually forgot a watched this not long ago not that the movie is that unforgettable. I remember reading somewhere that this movie was rubbish and not worth watching, I disagree. I thought this was a decently made thriller, I actually put myself in both situations and thought what would I do. If emergency operators are as smart as Halle Berry was in this film I would feel safe if I got kidnapped. The only gripe I has was the ending which turned a bit corny, also Halle Berry's hair in this was distracting. Good watchable thriller in my opinion.

16 Blocks (2006)
Very good, action-filled Bruce Willis flick that doesn't skimp on the drama either. Willis is very good playing against-type as a hard-drinking, job-weary cop, and Mos Def is terrific as a an oddball crime witness that Willis is assigned to escort the sixteen blocks of the title to the courthouse. They are hampered along the way by hitmen, crooked cops, and unknowing good cops. David Morse also stars as Bruce's ex-partner. Fine entertainment.

I've fallen a bit behind on my reviews this week, but I'm hoping to catch up on them now that I have a few days off in a row. This one in particular (http://brianjhadsell.blogspot.com/2015/01/the-weekend-review-dragon-ball-z-battle.html) I have just reviewed in greater detail on my blog.
Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods (2013) - 8.5/10
This is without a doubt the single best 90 minutes that have ever been produced among the three Dragon Ball anime series and eighteen feature films: successfully merging Dragon Ball's emphasis on humor with Dragon Ball Z's emphasis on fighting. The animation is superb and the jokes are side-splittingly hilarious (especially Vegeta's song and dance number, which is probably the best 30 seconds of the film). If it can be faulted with anything, it's that the climactic fight in the last 30 minutes really does pale against the more iconic fights from the series (Frieza vs Goku, Cell vs Gohan, Majin Vegeta vs Goku), but in of itself is a fine battle to punctuate a weirdly effective action-comedy.

The Royal Tenenbaums (Anderson) - 5/10 - I saw this for the first time at about 17 when it came out, in theaters because it looked good (trailer), and was a bit disappointed, so I thought I'll check it out again with a wider knowledge of film. I only rate it at 5 because of the two funny parts like in the beginning,
"I'd like to you to meet my adopted daughter."
And later on when son tells dad his feelings,
"Margot Tennenbaum?" - I loved how he had to use the full name. My kind of humor. I love Gene Hackman, one of my favorite actors, and I think Huston was really good.

My first Kurosawa film and one of my new favorites! Greatly acted, shot, and overall a fine film to watch.

A nice film. Not much else to say but It's A Wonderful Life should have won Best Picture that year.

Apparently this is the third highest rated South Park Episode on IMDB. AND ITS ONE OF THE FUNNIEST THINGS I HAVE SEEN! The way it makes fun of alternate universe stuff like Inception (and probably The Matrix but I haven't seen that yet) is great!
http://1.images.southparkstudios.com/blogs/southparkstudios.com/files/2014/11/1807_3.gif
The best part was Steve the Customer Service Guy. Everything he said was gold!
http://ts1.mm.bing.net/th?&id=HN.607992362511699330&w=300&h=300&c=0&pid=1.9&rs=0&p=0

Disappointing follow up to Grounded Vindaloop but still has funny moments. The satire on old people buying stuff on the TV was nice and the song about the Gold Cycle was entertaining but I didn't really like the story. Several jokes prevented this for getting a smaller rating.
Gluten Free Ebola 3.5

Apparently eating gluten makes one's penis fly off. WTF? LOL! Ending was weak though.
Medicinal Fried Chicken 4.5
{Showing pictures for this episode will probably get this post deleted)
The adults of South Park get testicular cancer so they can smoke marijuana and jump around with their balls. That's one of the stupidest things I have ever seen so I have to love it.
So where should I go next for South Park? These were showed to me at a friend's house so he just showed me some of his favorite episodes.
Try either the Imagination :and three part arc or the three part arc dealing with Black Friday that is a parody of Game of Thrones.

The Judge
I really didn't know much about this movie besides the trailer and I didn't think I would like it. I was very surprised at how much I liked this film, first off all the characters I cared for and the tension between Hank and "The Judge" was well executed. I do know how it feels to have high tensions with a family member but no matter what you would always care for them. I felt a part of this family and all the struggles with what was happening. I am glad Robert Duvall got nominated for an Oscar.

Sticking to obscurity tonight with a film comprising three episodes from the long forgotten Robert Goulet TV series 'Blue Light' about a secret agent inside Nazi Germany. Surprisingly brutal and with some incredible 'moral decision' moments, this was a really good film.

Gone Girl - 8/10
I brought some movies up with me from Family Video while visiting my parents and this is what they chose to watch tonight. Ironic, given that it's their 37th wedding anniversary. It was a good movie all told: incredibly well acted, well written and well directed. Hell, even Tyler Perry was actually great in this. It tended to drag near the end and is likely not something I'll seek out to rewatch, but I'm more than happy that I saw it the once.

Mikey and Nicky (May) - 9/10 - Second time watching this, and it's probably the funniest movie, but also the most tragic. Some great lines, I strongly urge you guys to watch this.
Definitely a film you have to watch twice. At first viewing, I didn't think Mikey was going to betray Nicky, and thought it was when Mikey thought the friendship was only when he was needed, that he decided to turn on him.
It's like Chinatown, you have to watch it again, even if you heard every word.
I liked it the first time, but it could be one of my favorites. Definitely the funniest movie I have ever seen, but so sad in parts. Great film about friendship, and how each person thinks the other uses them. Vulnerability..
I love Cassavetes' character, he's so funny. "How come you're black" cracked me up!! Or at the cemetery, "It's hard to talk with dead people. I have nothing in common." and it was heartbreaking when he finally lets Mikey know (in a jovial way, so it's not 100% certain), "Mom, if anything happens to me, Mikey did it!" - but even earlier at the restaurant when Mikey asks if the phone was ringing (when it wasn't), Nicky gives a look that will put chills in your back.
I'll probably watch this movie again, it's that great. But you do have to watch it the second time, when you know the betrayal is there, but even the second time, it feels like there might be a moment of redemption, especially when Mikey tells his wife how his dad didn't like anyone, except Nicky. Lots of ambiguity, so many people think Cassavetes directed it, but I gotta give a lot of praise to Elaine May for writing and directing. She shot 3 times as much as "Gone With the Wind" and wouldn't mind watching 4 hours of this. This film has everything.

I didn't see the Americans as heroes, since they basically almost raped innocent female civilians. Also, the Germans are not 'pure evil', which is evident by the very last scene.
The 'love story' isn't a love story, just a moment in the guys life. He wasn't in love, he jus met her. He was pissed about the innocence lost in that moment.
I think you 'missed' this film entirely.

Anyway...
Bad Johnson - A man's penis controls his life to the point where he can't stay faithful to anyone. One night he wishes he penis would leave him alone...then he wakes up without one. His penis has taken human form and he's a dick...get it? Funny performances and an interesting premise help this obviously bad film crawl along the finish line, but there simply isn't enough comedy here to justify a watch.1.5
Premature - A young kid is stuck in a groundhog like repetitive day where each time he ejaculates, the day starts over. Funny? Not really. Obvious sex jokes, crude dialogue and predictable outcomes make the film stale. 1.5
Birdman - A one time mega star of a comic book film tries to find himself and reclaim some sort of artistry with his stage play. Keaton and co. are all solid and the flowing camera work is beautiful to watch. I'm hoping Keaton takes the trophy home come Oscar night. 4

Ok this movie convinced me of one thing. Lake Bell is a star. She wrote and directed and starred in this which automatically gets my respect for the ambition. On top of it it's a really cool little flick. Everything works well. Lake Bell is one charming chick. I hope she gets a big break soon because she has it (whatever it is). Strong performance from her. It's about the voice over industry for trailers and commercials. It's a neat idea for a movie because you don't think to explore something like that. It's a really charming little film that makes you smile.
I'd give it 4 out of 5

Been trying to watch some classics that I have never seen and should. Listen as I've always said with older movies like this I can appreciate them for the foundation they laid in cinematic history but they don't really resonate with me like the movies of today or I grew up with. Did I enjoy it? Most certainly. Am I going run back and watch it again soon? No. And that's a major component of my favorite movies, if I can watch them over and over again. Anyways, strong performances all around and come on it's Jack of course he killed it. Felt like every scene was important to the end result. The twist at the end most have been very provocative in the 70s it would be now too. I most certainly see why this movie is so respected.

Again an older movie so I'm not running back to see it again. But I see why it's beloved too. The scenes where they are they are following the people were a bit tedious to me. But the car chase was cool. Most of you have probably already seen it so I'll save you the time.

Had my eye on this since last sundance. Found it on Netflix. Fassbender was great per usual even thou you don't see his face. About a band that recruits a keyboard player. Then they go off and try to record an album. Anyways it's kind of a strange flick. Get out of it what you will. It was pretty entertaining but I felt if it went in a different direction could have been really strong. But it's kind of one of those artsy movies that you can draw meanings from. It's worth a watch maybe two but nothing memorable to me.

I just finished these two on a whim, watched them together cause they sounded similar (yep, just from the titles :p).
25th Hour
4.5
Spike Lee has really been growing on me as of late, I loved Malcom X and Summer of Sam. The 25th Hour continued the trend with its sharp subtleties and profound dialogue. Edward Norton really connected with me as a viewer, definitely a top 5 performance of his. The synopsis gave off the stigma of a heavy-handed/shove its message lecturey type film but it wasn't that at all, calm and discreet.
After Hours
3.5
Fun, fun and more fun. Not one of my go-to Scorsese films but I'm glad I watched it once and for all, I was slightly disappointed due to its high standing and praises but it still was extremely enjoyable. Scorsese dabbling into showy surrealism was cool but I prefer the way it's more held back in his other films (Taxi Driver and Bringing Out The Dead).

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes - 8.5/10
This was a lot better than I was expecting, and Rise of the Planet of the Apes had risen my expectations considerably from the original films. The story was fairly simple, but with enough kinks in the works from making it boring. The acting is solid, the CG fantastic and production values absolutely superb. This (and Rise, and Tintin and The Lord of the Rings) begs the question of what Andy Serkis has to do to get Academy recognition for his acting.

Kite - 3.5/10
A twist without quality context cannot carry the film. This films is an absolute mess, from franticly rushed action to maddenly dragged out plot, it was quite simply boring to watch. When all is said and done, this is just short of being my least favorite fmovie from 2014 (the honor going to Cabin Fever 3: Patient Zero).
