The Devil's Candy (2015) (Dir. Sean Byrne) 5

https://i.imgur.com/CsZ2c2B.jpg

A f----ing devastating meditation on evil, its strictly human expression through violent acts and art, the absurdity of those acts, and the catharsis of that art. It explores the Faustian temptation drawing us into the darkest passages of the human heart where wild fascination and inescapable trauma blur. Sean Byrne can truly convey raw, visceral horror because he can honestly convey pure tenderness and affection with the same hand. Interpreting this as pitch black comedy, as some have, misinterprets the blank absurdity of extreme violence accurately depicted here. The Devil's Candy is a sweltering baptism by fire.

I was always interested in seeing this and finally watched it for the female director's countdown. I thought the female character was blind and was disappointed to find out she was deaf instead. It's a believable and nice love story with two fine performances from William Hurt and Marlee Matlin. I didn't think it was anything special.

Really enjoyed this. I was pleased that this wasn't the comedy I was kind of expecting. Its very funny in parts but don't be fooled, I found it genuinely sad and touching. Gosling again shows off his acting chops as a socially awkward loner, which was also pleasing to see, as there are a lot of more comedic actors out there who might have been chosen for the part. He plays it perfectly.

Exactly. Gosling balansed this role. His chcracter doesn't occure as a pervert, but profoundly lonely guy. It's weird for me to write something like that about a man, who felt in love with a doll, but thanks to Gosling, Lars is justified.

The Commuter: Saw this on my birthday this past weekend. Liam Neeson is Michael, a former cop turned insurance agent who is fired from his current job after ten years on the job. That day, on his way home, he comes across a mysterious woman (Vera Farmiga) who asks him to do one simple thing: someone on the train (which is the Metro North Hudson Line...a train line I am personally familiar with...matter of fact, my hometown gets mentioned in the film) doesn't belong. He basically makes the choice of taking $25,000 to find the person and will be given $75,000 more if he finds the person...however, if he takes too long, people close to him get threatened or killed. People have called this Non-Stop on a Train, but for me, the story kept me intrigued and had me along with Neeson's character as he attempts to find this mysterious person.

There are a few fistacuffs in the film, including a one-take fight scene that lasts about 3-4 minutes between him and a passenger who is actually revealed to be working for Farmiga's character, there to make sure Neeson does his "job". And Neeson doesn't go as the invincible elder action hero type....far from it. He is clearly having not just a bad day...but an even worse afternoon and night.

Final Rating: A

Small town Crime (2017)

Caught Small Town Crime last night, a nicely done work-horse contemporary noir. It starred the inestimable John Hawkes, who turned in another first rate performance, and who is becoming one of my favorite actors.

Written and directed by the Nelms brothers, the Elmore Leonard type plot was not overly complicated, and the yarn was fairly well spun, with obvious homages to several classic crime films. It received an "R" rating, but in today's climate it could just as easily been a "PG-13", since there was no grisly violence, sex, or gratuitous language; a welcome change.

Hawkes took a character who was slightly over written, and made him reasonably believable. An alcoholic ex-cop hopes to get back on the force, who privately takes on a murder case to help his chances, and to avenge the murder victim. A weakness in the story line is that it's not made clear why the protagonist has such a personal interest in the case. Therefore his pursuit seems a little baseless and confusing.

It was also confusing why the character would have been adopted into a black family, outside of an apparent Hollywood code that a significant portion of all leading characters must be black. However the incongruity of their sibling relationship inserted a peculiar stumbling block in the narrative.

But despite its loose ends, the film is very watchable, and gets the job done in a
traditional way.

Excellent framing, color, and lighting. Natural light created a few high contrast scenes that played well with newspaper print and imagery of the time. Topical even today, with press v white house politics and gender power struggle in the work place.

Scenes were fluid one to the next and perfectly set up tension in dialogue. The pulse of the movie was subtle but building right to the end.

My only gripes are that the soundtrack was generic, fitting better in a Disney family feature than here, and two or three scenes that were just a touch too heavy painting the white house as the villain.

Several shots highlighted the manual block typesetting press production of the era. From a graphic design perspective, these were exciting treats to see the tech of history at work. A lovely nod to a dying media.

The gist of the movie should be obvious from trailers so I'm just listing the around-the-world view that hit most with me.

Hello. The last movie I watched was Elysium. I rate it 9 out of 10, the script was pretty well written. It strikes a sense of realism in me, on the topics like immigration, inequalities in social classes and unfair disparities of the wage distribution, in the real world. But I was a bit confused by the plot, so minus 1 point. Goodbye. ;)

He's got weird screen prescence. He's not exactly handsome, charismatic etc - but when he's on screen his mannerisms just make you want to watch him. Blue Ruin especially. He's got a cameo in The Florida Project, and he's excellent for about 90 seconds.

Man this really good, one of the best sport drama i ever seen. Wonder why i holding up this on my stash for so long. I suppose pretty much the original source by taiyou matsumoto quiet translated well for live action, which yet, up to this point too i never read any instead of reputation and other adaptation of his works, blue spring and anime tekkon kinkret -which a must see to imo-

It's not focused on the dynamic of the game, much characters driven with got a lot to say about passion, self discovery and relationship themselves. It could be a little overdramatic, cheesy, and cliche but never goes beyond gimmicky and ridicule, but poetic at the time

I prefer if the ending more like hold ior cut in subtleness rather shoving to audience which one made progress to professional level because i just dont feel its match with movie tone at all. Next to catch up is the anime version by masaki yuuasa's . It's a must!

Phantom Thread 4

I was not expecting what I ended up seeing with this one. Paul Thomas Anderson is a constant chameleon with each film being it's own entity aping different directors and styles and making it his own. Phantom Thread is his version of an Ivory-Merchant early 90's film. Overflowing with elegance and cutting performances from the three leads, visually it's a gorgeous film but it's also the funniest PT Anderson film since Boogie Nights.

Daniel Day-Lewis and Leslie Manville both received nominations...though most will leave noting Vicky Krieps performance. Your sympathies will often switch...if you have any sympathy for any of them but you will like this movie. This irony of the nominations is the standouts are in the fields it didn't get nominated in (Actress, Cinematography, Original Screenplay).

This is a two hour long film, it took me nearly five hours to finish... It's not a bad film but I kept nodding off and waking up having missed about 45 minutes, so went back to watch that over again and had to do that twice... and various other times for scenes I missed nodding off again. But from what I saw it's not a film I am bothered about going back to, and it wasn't as funny as the trailer made it look.

Prince Of Darkness

I remembered really loving this the first time but on a rewatch I still enjoyed it but not quite as much and I started to find it funny every time Donald Pleasence spoke as he is basically Dr Loomis only now a priest and delivering creepy monologues about the devil (not Michael myers) but he does it so well!! and together with the dramatic score makes a nice creepy atmosphere in a good slice of 80's horror

He's got weird screen prescence. He's not exactly handsome, charismatic etc - but when he's on screen his mannerisms just make you want to watch him. Blue Ruin especially. He's got a cameo in The Florida Project, and he's excellent for about 90 seconds.

Totally agree. I cant wait to see him more often. I enjoyed I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore, that he directed, so he's quite a talent. I've not seen The Florida Project Yet but hoping to see it very soon.

I randomly came across this movie and decided to watch it for the female director's countdown. I wouldn't normally use the Norwegian title, but there's a Korean movie from the same year that also translates to the title of 90 minutes. In this movie we see a short time in three separate male/female relationships before they all end violently. It's very well made and has a beautiful musical score. It's just a little tedious until we get to the strong climax.

Personal Shopper (2016)

Firstly, I did enjoy this but it was nothing at all like I had imagined. Wrongly labelled as horror, I do have to say that there is nothing frightening or disturbing about this movie. Immediately it reminded me of Ghost Story, which in this case I loved. Personal Shopper slow-burning and does have a tendency to lull and this is where Kristen Stewart comes in. She takes up almost all of the screen time and if you don't like her sultry, moody persona, then steer clear of this one, especially you Dani!! Still, I cant really fault her acting ability here as she does play the part well, even though the plot could have been developed so much more.

Logan Lucky (2017)

A cute caper comedy by Steven Soderbergh which successfully avoids heist cliches. The rural accents weave all over hell's half acre, but its somewhat Coenesque zany hillbilly humor belies a clever plot.

This is a fun film that never takes itself seriously, and offers up a few fine comedic performances. The appearance of Daniel Craig playing against type shows his range, despite a slightly uneven interpretation. Channing Tatum and Adam Driver are convincing as brothers who cook up the caper; and Brian Gleeson and Jack Quaid play Craig's bothers, "Darryl and my other brother Darryl" types. Dwight Yoakam as the prison warden was a nice touch.

How the producers assembled this ensemble cast, and in addition coaxed Soderbergh out of retirement would no doubt be an interesting story itself. But the movie is charming, good natured, moves right along, and has a gratifying ending.

Oh, that’s out already. When I first caught word of it I, for some reason, concocted a whole plot for a movie about an adult Christopher Robin having to return to the 100 Acre Wood for some sort emotional rehabilitation, based solely on the title. I see it’s actually an A.A. Milne biopic which is definitely a better idea.

Victoria And Abdul (Stephen Frears, 2017)

Judi Dench made a good, older Queen Victoria, she was quite cranky which I could image the real Queen was like in her later years. This is based on a true story and one that was not well known until a journalist visited the Queen's summer home in 2003 and uncovered some writings by the Queen that told of this unique relationship that proved to be very scandalous in it's time.

This 2017 British movie is done as a biographical comedy-drama, so the general feeling is light, which I found enjoyable as it fit the film's motif. It was certainly beautiful filmed with gorgeous sets and costumes, just a joy to look at. The actor who played Abdul (Ali Fazal) did a fine job of not over playing it which easily could have been a problem. I liked him, and Judi Dench too.

Truth it seems is indeed stranger than fiction.

The Whole Truth

(Courtney Hunt)

https://i.imgur.com/mxxxlkF.jpg

2

A low budget courtroom drama starring Keanu Reeves as the persistent lawyer, Renée Zellweger as the tormented and sad mother of the defendant and finally Jim Belushi as the victim, who just so happens to be the killer's father.

The Whole Truth is a laughable film when you look at it from a distance and it fails to make a courtroom drama the least bit exciting, but I give it props for being able to take a few plot turns that I did not expect, as absurd as those may have been. Those final moments though do not excuse the rest of the film, which tries hard to build a mystery around something that a lot of people won't really care for.

Typical acting from Reeves does not help this film in the least. He seems to be sleeping through his role here. He gets a lot of flak for his acting, but he has some sort of charisma, here there is nothing. Then we have a return to the screen from an almost unrecognizable Renée Zellweger in a role that should have had more substance. The acting in this film from everyone seems at the very best, just under serviceable. No one seems to care or actually believe in the scenes they are acting out.

Voice over narration distracts from the story, a subplot involving Reeves partner goes literally nowhere and lame editing choices that try to reveal truths while characters lie cheapen the production. The film wants to wow you with the ending, but the build up to that is so boring and pedestrian that no one will really care.

I had never heard of it so looked it up. Why anyone would want to see an online suicide is quite beyond me. Isnt there enough bad stuff in the world? We saw an alleged murder on the net by accident when looking for extreme horror movies years ago. Neither of us are interested in seeing more. I just dont get the entertainment value. Henry Poole is Here (2008)

https://www.reelingreviews.com/henrypooleisherepic.jpg

A man named Henry Poole (Luke Wilson) with a terminal diagnosis moves into a house in the neighborhood where he grew up as a child, apparently seeking some kind of closure to his past. But his religious neighbors begin to think they see the face of Christ in a water stain on the wall of his house! Henry gets peeved at the unwanted attention at a time when he only wants to be left alone, and even more peeved when people start attributing miracles to touching his wall. Henry is not happy about it... Henry's not happy in general.

I had some mixed feelings about the movie, but overall enjoyed it as I became engrossed in the scenario and wanted to know how it would play out.

Personally, I didn't really care for its several musical interludes (which others will love as the soundtrack is made up of indie artists), but they do add to the ethereal and introspective nature of the film while keeping it simple: not overwhelming it with dialog.

It's got the feel of an independent film (which it is) as it's low budget, but that's good in it keeps you focused on the story rather than typical movie trappings (not for lovers of high-speed, flashy, CGI-laden feature films).

It's a spiritual story about loss and faith, yet has opposing views toward religion (some critics feel it's too religious, and others feel it's not religious enough or doesn't take religion seriously).

The biggest surprise was Luke Wilson - I've come to associate him with mostly comedy, but here he seems to shine in a dramatic role as a quiet, sad, sympathetic, yet genuinely despondent person.

Also surprising - the trailer seems to play this off as a comedy, and while it's got some irony and a few chuckles along the way, it's a highly emotional drama with themes of depression, death and faith.

Yeah, I'd just commented recently on another thread that I really don't like to see summaries contained in reviews whether I've seen a movie or not. (Because if I'm checking a review to see if a movie is worth watching, I don't want to read a book report on the movie before seeing it, or if I've already seen the movie and am just looking at reviews to see what others thought and why, then I don't want to read a whole summary since I already know what happened).

But here, a small lead-in synopsis seemed appropriate to pique interest (and it seemed without at least a hint of subject matter, no one would have any desire to check it out).

I don't like Harry Potter - books or movies. So I didn't expect I would find Fantastic Beast brilliant, but even though, it was painful.
So 2 points for special effects and to Farrell. Redmayne, who is quite good actor IMO, acted here like he would played titular role in Rain Man. It wasrealy hard to stand it.

Disturbing in that De Niro plays a very mentally and emotionally fragile person. Someone with no concept of boundaries and stunted.

Spoilers William Devane plays a former POW who finally comes home after 7 years. He needs to catch up with his son who was just a baby when he left, and his wife didn't know he'd be back and moved on to another man. He needs to pick up the pieces and adjust back to civilian life. That would be hard enough then bam, armed robbers enter the home. They want his money but he ain't talking. They put his hand down the garbage disposal, but then the wife and son walk in and they get their loot. Not satisfied they plug the broad and the kid, and leave our hero for dead. They should have made sure to finish him off! He recovers from the shooting and now has a cool hook where his hand was. It's time for sweet bloody revenge and he ends up getting help from one of his military buddies played by Tommy Lee Jones before his face looked like it got stabbed 1000 times with an icepick. It's a must see for fans of revenge flicks and features a great finale in a Mexican whorehouse. Excellent recommendation from Captain Spaulding.

Blade Runner: 2049

(Denis Villeneuve)

https://i.imgur.com/g1HGAIM.png

3.5

2049 loves to take long slow pauses here and there for people to orgasm over the gorgeous palette of colours that cinematographer Roger Deakens has ejaculated onto the screen. A man who has been nominated for Best Cinematography a dozen times and losing each time. is playing in the realm of science fiction here. This gives him a bit more creative freedom with colours, such as the neon glows of a rainy city or the rusty dust of a toxic wasteland. Who better to help him with those images than Villeneuve, a director on a hot streak. Villeneuve's love of slow burner pacing is put to effect here, building the mystery at the film's core and helping the viewer engulf themselves in the visuals to transport them to this world they've created.

K is a Blade Runner, tracking down out-dated Replicants that can outlive their programmed life as well as ones that have gone rogue. While on a mission, he discovers some bones in a chest buried under a tree. This person was a Replicant, this person also gave birth to a child. This news will shatter the world giving hope to a Replicant uprising and cause a war. K must track down the Replicant child and destroy any evidence. Things get difficult when K's own memories interfere with the mission.

Here is another sci/fi sequel decades after the release of the first films that stars an older, crankier Harrison Ford. This time around, he's given a bit more of an emotional arc for his character and despite his limited screen time, delivers a good performance. Alongside Ford is Gosling, he's the Blade Runner this time around. He's able to carry the weight of the film, displaying emotions on his face when he desperately tries to hide it. A key element in his character flaws that make him seem more human despite the reality. The stand out performance in the film belongs to Ana de Armas. She plays Joi, an A.I. that desperately seeks any chance to feel more human, more so than any replicant does. There is one trippy sequence in which she (now try to follow me here) mimics the moves of another person, while integrated with them, so that Gosling can have a physical sexual experience with a person that looks like Joi. What we get is a weird threesome with two people.

Sequences like the one above would end up on the cutting room floor of another director wanting to make the film more action packed and leaner. While I appreciate the artistic choices of Villeneuve, I can also see the other side of the equation. Blade Runner: 2049 is too long. At 2 hours and 45 minutes, there are plenty scenes that could be trimmed down or cut out to make the film move along at a quicker pace. Trimming down Robin Wright's scenes is a good place to start as her performance was stiff and unconvincing. Jared Leto waxing poetic might be another. The action sequence we do get are surprisingly boring. Villeneuve can build tension, dread and suspense, but he needs to learn how to shoot a fight sequence, or better yet, stage an action scene. 2049 fumbles the ball a bit in these moments.

Who knows if I'll ever watch this movie again, the world presented to me was gorgeous and I would love to visit it again, but the running time is a turnoff and the lack of mystery on a second viewing doesn't help much either. 2049 is one of, if not the best looking film of 2017 and I hope to see some people rewarded for that.

Weak script, and some bad acting gimps this flick. Which is a shame because I can see something good in there somewhere. Additionally, I am unsure if it is the fault of the screenwriter(s) and actor(s), or poor direction or editing. I am guessing that it is burdened by all of these problems, but I wager that I will ever know or care enough to dig for answers.

Don't get me wrong, the movie was engaging enough (credit to James Franco) to sit through, but a few wrong turns left much to be desired.

I was looking forward to this as I am a fan of director Kathryn Bigelow. I've seen all of her movies and have thought well of every single one. At 143 minutes my only cause for concern was that this movie could drag, but I didn't find that to be the case at all. For the first half hour, it seemed that it would be a sort of compilation movie featuring all different acts committed during the 1967 Detroit riots. There is a scene in the middle of the movie that is literally about an hour long, and it's that intense scene and it's fallout that turns out to be the focus. What's great about this movie is that not only is it relevant, but it feels so alive and pops off the screen. I give Bigelow a lot of credit for tackling this material. My only beef, and it has nothing to do with the movie itself, is the two previews on the DVD. Obviously, because Detroit has a largely black cast, they showed previews of two movies with largely black casts. The ultimate goal is to one day not notice skin color, so how about not lumping these things together WTF.

Incredibly solid and well-told horror story with a message.

I struggle to not rate this movie higher, however, there are some unintentionally funny moments (to me anyway) and is rather overly message-driven.

These are odd things to criticize for me because both actually make the movie more watchable to a degree.

Regardless, Train to Busan is a refreshingly good time. Highly recommended for horror fans.

I, Tonya

This is a similar biography movie like Foxcatcher.

The story is obviously interesting, the acting from whole cast is decent. We all know that Allison Janney already won a oscar for her role. Kudos to Sebastian Stan who also did a fantastic job. On the other hand, I felt like Margot Robbie's performance was a bit inconsistent, she did a good job as Tonya on the ice, but she wan't convincing enough to me during all the interview scenes.

Things I didn't like in this movie:
- The story relies too much on those interview scenes to move forward, it tries so hard to be funny but it gets old fast.
- The music. The music selection is actually very good, but the movie basically plays one song after one song to move forward the story, and it is non-stop. It is unfortunate that the director went the easy and lazy way.
- The whole escape scene after Nancy Kerrigan was attacked.

Still a decent movie though.

Phantom Thread

This movie demonstrates the power of acting and how important it is for a movie. If you replace Daniel Day-Lewis by an incompetent actor, a movie like this will turn to be nothing but dull.

I haven't seen Darkest Hour, and I am not planning to see it any time soon. Therefore I cannot really tell whose performance is stronger between Daniel Day-Lewis and Gary Oldman. However Daniel Day-Lewis, once again, was really amazing in Phantom Thread.

Oh I almost forgot to mention the good performance from Vicky Krieps. She was really good as the leading actress.

I think Phantom Thread is easily on par with There will be Blood.

Kickboxer: Retaliation - superior sequel to the 2016 reboot of the Jean-Claude Van Damme classic Kickboxer, bringing back Alain Moussi as Kurt Sloane, now becoming a professional MMA fighter who is forced back to Thailand when he is basically kidnapped by Thomas Moore (Christopher Lambert), who is the mastermind behind the underground fights that led to the death of Kurt's brother Eric and Kurt's revenge against Tong Po. Moore offers $1 million to fight a new bioengineered fighter named Mongkut (HafÞór Júlíus Björnsson, aka Gregor "The Mountain" Clegane on Game of Thrones). When Kurt refuses, Moore kidnaps Kurt's wife Liu (Sara Malakul Lane) and Kurt then decides he must fight.

Van Damme is back as Durand, Kurt's Muay Thai teacher who is now blinded because of what transpired in theprevious film, but a welcome addition is Mike Tyson as Briggs, a prisoner who helps Kurt with both pain and power-punching with JCVD as more of a spiritual mentor who teaches Kurt to predict his opponent's moves. Tyson also brings in fellow prisoners Roy "Big Country" Nelson and Fabricio Werdum (UFC fighters), Ronaldinho (famed soccer star), and Brian Shaw (who has defeated Björnsson in the World's Strongman Competition) as Kurt's training partners.

Lots more action in this one, featuring two one-take fights. The big match between Kurt and Mongkut, a David vs. Goliath style fight takes up most of the last third of the film. A throwback to 90's American martial arts action films...fun nonetheless.

Crazy Joe (1974)

https://unobtainium13.files.wordpress.com/2017/06/crazy_joe_film.jpg?w=538

I actually watched this a while back, but have been putting off talking about it because I'm writing a longer review on it. It's taking me longer than I like, so I'm just going to lump Crazy Joe with the rest of these films. Obviously made because of the success of The Godfather (1972), Crazy Joe is a melting pot of the exploitative genre. The director, Carlo Lizzani, and a few of the Italian actors in the film, leave the fingerprints of the Italian Poliziotteschi genre on Crazy Joe, while the casting of Fred Williamson brings to recalls Black Caesar (1971) and the blaxplostation genre, and the film, especially the soundtrack, is aware of this.

Starring Peter Boyle as the titular renegade mobster "Crazy Joe' Gallo, the film is less of a character study of a complex man, but rather a collection of newspaper headlines cut out and pasted into a script. The movie sort of works, filming on location in the dirty, gritty New York of the 1970s definitely gives it an authentic feel, (Crazy Joe was shot and released in the middle of the Second Colombo War, where bodies were still hitting the streets of New York as a result of Gallo's rebellion and assassination) but you feel like more could have been gotten out of someone like Peter Boyle playing the lead.

Crazy Joe has never been released on video in the U.S., and the only reason I scored a copy is because I was lucky enough to find a region less bootleg on ebay on the cheap. If you can procure a copy, I definitely recommend Crazy Joe to any fan of the gangster genre. I'll hopefully be posting my extended review soon.

Shot Caller (2017)

https://www.pophorror.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/shotcallar6-660x330.jpg

I was really blown away by Shot Caller. I've been juggling watching this and Brawl in Cell Block 99 (2017) together as a prison double feature. Well, I only ended up having time for Shot Caller (hopefully I'll catch Cell Block 99 tonight), but I was hardly disappointed. Gritty, raw, and a clear indictment of the prison system, the frightening thing about Shot Caller is how that situation could potentially happen to anyone. For those unfamiliar with the plot, stock broker Jacob Harlon (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) goes to prison after a manslaughter DUI charge. Being his only way to survive, Harlon falls in with a skin head prison gang (Jeffrey Donovan and especially Jon Bernthal are great in these roles) for protection. Little by little he becomes more and more associated with the gang; what first becomes simply passing drugs across prison soon turns into targeted shankings and brawling during prison riots. Harlon, who went into prison a regular guy, transforms into a tattooed thug.

https://cdn.flickeringmyth.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/m-47metersdown.jpg

I wasn't expecting much from 47 Meters Down, but I gotta say, this is just a by the numbers, shark movie, coasting off the success of The Shallows (2016). Basically one of those movies where you can guess the entire story out of the trailer. I really can't recommend this one; you've seen this movie before and chances are it was better the first time you saw it.

Though it had a number of American actors in it (Peter Boyle, Eli Wallach, Rip Torn, and Fred Williamson), it was an Italian, rather than an American production. I just assumed there was a DVD that existed of it somewhere, just never a Region 1 DVD. But digging a little deeper, I don't see any kind of official DVD release for Crazy Joe and all that's on the market seem to be bootlegs.

I really liked it. Don't know why some fans oh-so-lovingly said it (and I'm putting the censor on) "crapped the bed." I like how Anno's done something different with each of these movies. I loved Shinji's reaction when they're explaining about the DSS Choker: "What the hell's going on? (he says that a lot in this one) That's so messed up!" Also, Maya, who was just a "bridge bunny" (this is what happens when you read too much TVTropes) before, got really... Kick-ass and bossy all of a sudden. "Don't give me any excuses! Run your stations, not your mouth!" Granted, she had 14 years to get like that. Speaking of which... Exactly what happened to Asuka's left eye? Also, Shinji's dad is still an ass. It had to be said. Seriously, the guy has "jerk-off" written all over him. With a dad like that, it's no wonder the kid (oh, that's right, he's actually 28) seems to be perpetually depressed. Having watched the first four episodes of the original Neon Genesis Evangelion show a few nights ago, I can say this holds true there as well. All of that said, I can't wait to see how the fourth movie turns out. Later, guys.

6 Below: Miracle On The Mountain

We follow Josh Hartnett as an adrenaline seeking snowboarder who gets lost in a massive winter storm in the back country of the High Sierras. I might have enjoyed this more had it been a more linear story of his survival but only about half of this film is set on a mountain, the other half is told in flashbacks of his life and crappy drama, the climax felt rushed and lacked tension in the right places, before the credits roll we get to see the real life guy giving an inspiring talk (or perhaps finishing the last page of his own book) to some kids who looked as bored as I felt...

I loved this movie. It was very well done. :)

(REWATCH) Perfume: The Story of a Murderer rating_4_5 With such a title it should be understood that this movie is equally dark and beautiful. Set in the 1800's Paris, France, is a story of a young man with exceptional smell that, desiring to retain the scent of a particular girl, begins to murder others to create a perfume.
An extraordinary film done with artistic brilliance.

Cool movie, but I still do not understand the last quarter of the movie (when it takes the giant left turn and runs off the rails). Could you explain it to me, please?

The Girl with All the Gifts (2016)

Truly exceptional zombie (or zombie-like, if you prefer) movie, with good characters and depth instead of a an all-out munch fest, which I don't mind either. This one is set after the decimation of most of civilization from a fungal plague, where we see mostly military survivors at a fenced-in camp. Unusual from what you might expect at an army camp, there are several dozen child survivors who are infected with the fungus and given the chance, will attack and kill remaining humans. The difference between the children and the giant hordes of flesh-eating "Hungries" is that they retain the human ability to think and learn. That is, as long as the humans keeping charge of them keep a lotion rubbed into their own skin that blocks the human smell. Without it, the children will start going into a fit, trying to bite their keepers. And make no mistake, the kids are being kept prisoners, wakened rudely each morning by their military guards who keep them strapped into wheelchairs to roll them into a class. Here, they are treated humanely by Helen (Gemma Arterton), who not only teaches them but tells them stories, which they love.

The ranking soldier, Sgt. Parks (Paddy Considine), is very rough and rightfully fearful of the children, referring to each one as an "it." He doesn't like Helen's methods but Helen disregards his rebuke and grows particularly close to a very special child, Melanie (Sennia Nanua), who seems to learn and evolve faster than the other children. Outside the camp, thousands of Hungries keep gathering until they eventually break in, leading Helen, Parks, Melanie, another soldier, Kieran (Fisayo Akinade), and the leading army scientist, Dr. Caldwell (Glenn Close) to all escape, first by military vehicle, then by foot. They make their way to London, where Melanie leads them through the dormant Hungries, who only come awake when they hear noise or smell anything not covered by the odor blocker. This is really where the movie hits high gear, as the survivors have to literally tiptoe through thousands of motionless flesh-eaters, trying to find food and shelter. Melanie is not threatened by the Hungries, as the children are part zombie themselves.

This movie really does have a heart as Helen sees these second generation kids as something more than zombies. Dr. Caldwell understands that Melanie is the smartest and wants to cut her up to work upon a hoped-for vaccine against the plague. Helen protects Melanie against Caldwell, whom she knows will eviscerate Melanie at the first chance, even as they are on the run. The rest of the survivors begin to trust Melanie as she volunteers to go on solo missions to find food, shelter, anything that will aid them in staying alive. If she munches on a stray cat on her errands, oh well, kid's gotta eat. She does so to suppress her need to eat humans. She begins to bond with all of them, except of course Caldwell. There are very tense moments as the group explores a mostly deserted London. Caldwell knows some secrets that she keeps close to the vest. There are other, hidden dangers in London and it really comes down to Melanie to help them make it through. The ending is particularly touching. The cast is all fine, but Sennia Nanua is a revelation as Melanie. The movie succeeds or fails on her performance and I'm happy to say it succeeds greatly.

I, Daniel Blake (2017)

I don't get it, I don't get the love for this movie. I liked it, I like small, quieter and simpler indie films. I'd give it a solid rating_3 maybe even a half point higher...but...I just don't get what the big deal is about this film. I mean why do people love it so much? Actually I do think I know why.
It's too bad You didn't enjoy this movie as I did. Somethimes too many recommendations can riun receive of a movie, because You expect too much. I didn't know much about this movie before I watched it, only general outline.

I think one reason I love it, was helpless fight with bureaucracy which suppose to serve every citizen, but its turned out that nationals had to act absurdly, because of rules, which don't help anyone. E.g. need to look for a job, but shouldn't find it.
The second reason is an issue poverty of members living in reach western countries. When You see a single mother, who could be Your neighbour and who is so hungry that is grabbing the food and devouring it in the corner and can't afford for basic higenic products, it's really shocking. There is a lot of food in every store, poeple eat in restaurants and she is passing out because lack of food.
Those rae the effects of law, which made her moved out from family town, where her family could support her.

Forgive me CR this too long screed:) I just want to share with You my opinion:)

Based on a classic bestselling novel. Never heard of it. Now to read the novel first which will ruin the film or forgo it?

I loved this movie. It was very well done. :)

If you are interested, Seoul Station (2016) is the animated prequel. I haven't seen it myself yet, but it is available on Amazon to rent or buy. Nothing on Netflix unfortunately.

47 Meters Down

(Johannes Roberts)

Originally released on dvd as In The Deep, the success of The Shallows made the studio re-think their marketing strategy for this film. They quickly changed the title and gave it a small theatrical run, making it earn a few extra dollars here and there. But in thinking that, does this mean that the film is a cheap direct to dvd shark flick? Well, yeah it totally is. I'm oddly okay with that as well. 47 Meters Down is boring to start, mildly entertaining throughout with an eye-rolling finish.

Sisters Lisa and Kate decides to go into a shark cage while on vacation. Exciting, thrilling and dangerous. Things take a turn when the cable line to the cage breaks off and the sisters are plummeted 47 meters down. With low oxygen and hungry sharks surrounding them, can they make it back up to safety?

This film could have earned an extra rating from me had they ended the film 5 minutes earlier than they did. There is a moment in the film that a line is spoken and you immediately know that this will play into the plot later on. When it does, you pat yourself on the back for knowing this and appreciate the chance the filmmakers took in ending their story. But then....the film goes on for another 5 or so minutes, completely ruining what could have been a memorable and dark ending. Now this film becomes another generic shark film in a sea of trash.

The film uses a lot of diving lingo to try and make itself seem like it knows what it is talking about. I get the sneaky suspicion that it doesn't. "You guys are experienced, right?" "Umm...yeah." That's all it took for the captain to let these ladies on the boat. Get his license revoked!!!! If he even has one. I thought maybe he did it on purpose and that there was a sinister plot to ransom the girls for millions from their wealthy parents. That's thinking too outside the box.

If I saw a flashlight from far away not moving anywhere, is my best option to leave the cage and investigate? You have hungry sharks out there, low oxygen, no weapon. Dumb girls. There is one shot in the film that was pretty cool, but you need to throw out logic to appreciate it. I did, the film needs all the help it can get. 47 Meters Down has some tense filled moments, but they are sprinkled between dumb decision and illogical scuba scenes. The Shallows is a much better shark flick.

Winstead!!!

Although she was brilliant, the star of the show for me, was David Thewlis. What an amazing performance.
