In a Glass Cage (1986)

There's this ex-Nazi doctor who used to rape, torture and kill little boys. Years later, after an attempted suicide has left him confined to an iron lung, he lives in a big isolated house with his wife and young daughter. The wife is miserable taking care of him, and secretly wishes he would die. A young man shows up one day, says he has nursing experience, and wants to work helping to care for him. She doesn't like him but the guy wants the young fellow there. The young fellow turns out to be a former victim and is there for revenge. Except he's not just there for revenge, he's also there to take the guy's place as the monster. This is a pretty decent movie if you like sick stories. I had never really known what an iron lung was, and that thing alone is enough to make me squirm. It's a very uncomfortable movie to watch to say the least. It's very slow at times but I liked it.

Criss Cross (1949)
3.5
http://www.imamuseum.org/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/Criss-Cross.jpg
A guy (Burt Lancaster) returns home to L.A. after many years. He reconnects with his family and gets his old job as an armored car guard back, but what he really wants is to get his ex-wife (Yvonne De Carlo who I wanted to bang when I was about 10 when she played Lily Munster) back. She marries a gangster (Dan Duryea), and we get a love triangle. When the gangster catches the two former lovers together, Lancaster's character tells him that all he wanted was to meet him to talk about a heist. The heist happens, and there's either a criss cross, or the title means nothing. A good cast and a good movie with a great ending.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 2
It doesn't have the colorless wet-cement aesthetic of the other Marvel films, but this is still a hot mess. Even some admittedly funny jokes and creative setpieces can't make up for the loud, cluttered, obnoxious finale.

What spirit?
That of Alien 3 or Resurrection, where the expected displays of horror and action are shored up by some well-earned weirdness.

Good movie, but a bit predictable. Loved Clark Gable in it. It made me realize that I haven't seen enough of his movies.

How Green Was My Valley (1941)
Didn't think I'd enjoy this as it looked like a sentimental nostalgia for the bad old days type drama. Turns out that's exactly what it was like, but I did enjoy it, so what do I know.

I liked this a lot more than I expected, and I'll think about it when I think of the great classic Hollywood movies. I think it's even better than I'm rating it, but of course it's not the kind of movie I fall in love with easy. There were a lot of musical numbers, and I think I enjoyed all of them to some degree. I've only seen a couple of James Cagney's gangster flicks so far, but dare I say that this is the role he was born to play. It's a very standard narrative; it's just done very well and has a joyous quality.

All guns blazig from the get go, just the way I like it. Take notes, Godzilla. It doesn't measure upto Peter Jackson's fantastic retelling of the original but still a ton of fun. This did its own thing and was more about the Island itself. Had a blast.

Two words that I can describe this with; skin crawling. Split is not hard to watch, it's riveting in fact and the performance James McAvoy puts in as Kevin Wendell Crump is otherwordly. I don't think I've seen a performance this good since DDL's in There Will Be Blood.
I like how Kevin's final form is presented in a very grounded fashion. M. Night does that so well, takes outrageous situations and make them seem believable. Signs being the prime examples. That is one of my favorite films and Split is close to joining the ranks.

Typical British Thriller. Very suspenseful, great acting, excellent ending, lead characters that make you want to smack them in the mouth initially but then you feel for them. I'd give this a family sized carton of poppycock.
Made up for this which I thought was pretty dull. I just wanted everyone to die.
Even the promo poster thought it was Meh.

Typical British Thriller. Very suspenseful, great acting, excellent ending, lead characters that make you want to smack them in the mouth initially but then you feel for them. I'd give this a family sized carton of poppycock.
Never heard of it before but it looks good. On the Netflix queue for next weekend.
LOL guys, I edited it. Please be gentle with me.
Nesto, no I just thought it was pretty silly to be honest. Ridiculous guys doing stupid things on a bachelor party weekend.

I think the Brits do this genre really well. Probably my favourite is

Such a great ending. I found this one really quite traumatic and expected nightmares.
Edit for Nesto - I found this absolutely horrifying and felt quite unwell most of the way through it and for a few days after.
And I havent had a rewatch in a while but going to give this a rating just because it's dog dayum hilarious. Another genre the Brits do oh so well. Nesto this isnt scary but you might pee your pants laughing.

I love that. If you like that British crap, try Kill List and Mum and Dad if you haven't already.

Wasn't it hair raising, and the two leads were excellent.
I'll look up those other two. I havent heard of them. Thanks, Cricket.

I own it on VHS, but I can't say it was a complete rewatch, because I didn't remember the last half of the movie, at all. I may have picked it up and never got around to watching it through. Either way, rewatch or first complete time watching, it was impressive. Low budget, original and unlike the sequels. Certainly has a B-movie quality about it, that is comparable to The Terminator.
Clearly made by a teenager, or at least a teenage sensibility, Estevez aims for greatness but just comes off too wet behind the ears. Thankfully he later progressed into a fairly thoughful film maker. "Wisdom" was not his high point, but it was a gauzy indication of his work to follow. Tedious stuff. 2

Freddy vs Jason (2004)
3.5
Why is everyone so in love with Kane Hooder's Jason? Ken did a better job here, Jason should always be stiff and slow walking. Anyways, FVJ had a long period of development hell and I think given the stupidity of the concept itself, they did a good job here. The interactions between Freddy and Jason are what made it good.
Still abit sore about the new Friday 13th movie being cancelled. Jason will never get the movie he deserves.

As some of you may know, I really like to be touched. I also happen to like touching movies and this one certainly qualifies. I didn't think there was anything special about it except it's such a nice story, although it is well made and the performances are solid. I'd probably feel similar if I just saw the story on a news show. I also felt a small personal connection to the ending as well. I had no contact with my brother for a little over 20 years until I found out his address a couple years ago. I drove to Chicago and just knocked on his door, after making a pit stop at White Castle of course. It's a pretty emotional thing, and Lion turned out to be one of my favorite movies of last year.

It always cracks me up when one of the girls screams, "For God's sake, what happened to her eyes?" As if it's just her eyes that's the problem, and everything else is just fine and dandy. :)
I think the Brits do this genre really well. Probably my favourite is

Such a great ending. I found this one really quite traumatic and expected nightmares.
Edit for Nesto - I found this absolutely horrifying and felt quite unwell most of the way through it and for a few days after.
For a horror film, Eden Lake wasn't that bad, in fact it's one of the less ******** ones.

I saw a doco on Billy Hayes a while back. That wasnt a once off attempt to traffic, but then the script is very different to his bio.
So sad that Brad died so young - such potential as an actor.
And holy hell I just realised that the guy who played Erich was the CEO of Madrigal in Breaking Bad.
Great movie on every rewatch.

Interesting that Billy finally went bck to Istanbul years later and apologised that the movie gave Turkey a really bad reputation. I remember the first time I saw this thinking I would never go there as a result. Years later I completely forgot and went there for my honeymoon. Amazing place, but I'm not so stupid I think I can subsidise my holiday by trafficking drugs.
Oh and the father and his two spoilt lil turds. Horrid.

Freddy vs Jason (2004)
rating_3_5
Why is everyone so in love with Kane Hooder's Jason? Ken did a better job here, Jason should always be stiff and slow walking. Anyways, FVJ had a long period of development hell and I think given the stupidity of the concept itself, they did a good job here. The interactions between Freddy and Jason are what made it good.
Still abit sore about the new Friday 13th movie being cancelled. Jason will never get the movie he deserves.
One of the best guilty pleasure comedy/horror.

Most of this Fritz Lang noir was decent, although very much by the numbers. The story was sometimes Hitchcockian and the atmosphere was strong. It features two of my favorite 40's actors in Edward G. Robinson and Dan Duryea. The big problem was the ending, one of the worst cop-out endings I've seen that had me swearing at the screen.

Bad Words. Jason Bateman is a foul mouthed 40 year old slacker who has his own reasons for using a loophole to become an entrant in a national Spelling Bee in this very funny film that has got to be one of the few decent comedies of the 2010s. Enjoyed this just as much second time, really funny but with a bit of heart too. Very enjoyable. :)

Sicario (2015) rating_4_5
Excellent. Blunt does not play a strong female lead. She is more like a sheep that keeps trying to play civil and legal with monsters, like it's a sustainable option. Fortunately, the male cast restores common sense and saves/spares her life on several occasions. Not sure why she has that useless sidekick with her for the entire film. I really enjoyed the film on several levels. Del Toro and Brolin make the movie great for me.

Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015)
Having not seen the first two, I saw this movie as the first in a series instead of a prequel. A young high school girl named Quinn (Stefanie Scott) goes to see a psychic, Elise Rainier (the great Lin Shaye), who has been recommended to her by friends. Quinn wants to talk to her deceased mother. Elise finds out that Quinn has tried to contact her on her own and she warns her against this, saying that "when you call upon a dead person, they all hear!" And Elise is haunted by a spirit that has attached herself to her when she tried to contact her own dead husband. So she's not very willing to "visit the other side," being afraid that the evil spirit awaits to kill her. Meanwhile, Quinn is being haunted by an entity in her own apartment who is most definitely not her mother. All sorts of spooky things follow. Her father (Dermot Mulroney) believes his daughter is under attack and tries to get Elise to help. Meanwhile, an internet duo who "hunt ghosts" come to help, but are not very good. It's up to Elise to help but she has to face her fears. In the meantime Quinn is slowly being possessed by this evil spirit.
Very good scare-fest, with all the players doing a great job, especially the always good Shaye and the young Scott. I know about certain things in the first two movies, especially a certain Darth Maul-looking sucker who comes around, and the fact that Shaye and the two internet guys are in the first two movies, the latter something I found out just by checking out the IMDB cast list. I really want to see these first two due to this one being an enjoyable time.

Empire of the Ants (1977)
Hokey, fun time-waster, with a boat full of people going with realtor Joan Collins to a somewhat remote island to try to interest potential clients into buying property. Collins plays her usual late-career bitchy self, Robert Lansing is the boat captain, John David Carson is a somewhat cynical young man, with other familiar faces rounding out the potential investors/victims. Victims of giant ants, that is. I knew this wasn't going to be an award-winner but wow, the cheesy effect of having giant ants just being obviously superimposed ants in a terrarium is hurtful. You can see them ostensibly clustered against trees in the forest, then many of them start flailing their legs against the invisible glass and you have an affect that just turns out funny. Plus, they have a sound affect attached to them that sounds like a woman screaming soprano. Then, for the close-ups, there are giant rubber ant suits that the stars have to wrestle through. With these type of movies, I try to pick who's going to die and who's going to live, and I was spot-on this time, right down to the characters and their number. It's pretty bad, so don't feel bad if you miss it, but if you're into crappy, laughable monster flicks like I am, you'll be in hog heaven.

Disappointing movie. Sound and picture quality were terrible on the dvd I saw, which didn't help. Is Cary Grant a murderer or only a feckless wastrel? Olivia de Havilland is great and it's worth watching just for her frocks, but altogether it's uneven in tone and not a patch on the somewhat similarly themed Rebecca.

Let's not discuss the thing about
going to another, never-seen-before planet instead of the planet that they used freaking 10 YEARS to research to make sure it was safe and a great environment for the future of the human race. Okay, I surrender to the fact that they might as well "check it out" but then they go out there with NO MASKS and even for the technological wizardry of a possible scan from the ship it's a freaking PLANET and they don't know what's out there. They go out and discover "living things" as in fields, corn, forests etc. and other life is a very strong possibility yet the captain is like "this is great!" despite of being the most careful procedure-like person on ship just a while ago when things went bad.
Then they get infected through the mouth/nose (how surprising) and one of them even goes down and looks at the thing like "oooh this is so cool". How about THIS MIGHT BE INFECTIOUS!? Then they get all weird and must be taken to the ship. Remember Ripley not letting them in, in the og. Alien? Well, despite mentioning it in passing they just go in there without any form of procedure. They continue with the infected person THROUGH the ship and finally get to a closed area. One thing leads to another and BAM! blood sprays out on a person as things go really bad. However, the girl with the blood on her face rushes out and don't want to let the other person out because "she might be infected" and suddenly safety procedures matter... and she's the one with blood on her face. Okay.
Then she goes to get a gun and THEN she opens up the place despite the other person already being freaking beyond saving. NO POINT. She then SLIPS in the blood and Scott uses that trick TWICE within 30 seconds and it's not like it's the oldest trick in the book either... Then she rushes out of the room, slips and gets her foot stuck, closes the room and THEN she finally shoots up the entire place like a madperson...
After this I was like "SCREW THIS, MAN..." This is like a 5 minute thing, tops, and it managed to fit so much dumb **** in such a small area.
Prometheus had the "oh you are so cute little fella scene" and a few plot holes and whatever, but this was beyond me... and at least Prometheus entertained me and had a lot of well made practical stuff too. Covenant was lazy, rushed, unoriginal, thin and not worth it for me...

Bon Cop Bad Cop 2 (2017) - rating_3
While the original was a comedic buddy cop action film that lovingly poked fun at Canadian culture, the sequel takes a far more serious tone with a sense of humour that is much subtler than it's predecessor.
Since this is a sequel to an 11-year old film, audiences who saw the first film when it was new may be looking for a more mature story this time around, and that really is what Bon Cop Bad Cop 2 delivers. While I missed the quirkiness of the first film, I like that they chose to dial back that eccentricity rather than doubling down on it. It still has humours moments, but it's a little more clever, which suits the new tone just fine.
I didn't enjoy BCBC2 as much as the original, but I was still very content with what was presented, and left the theatre with the two other people who showed up to the screening in a good mood, with a smile on my face. And that's really all that matters.

Now there has been a lot of flak given for this movie and you either love it or hate it. I am a bit in between as I am interested in the origin of the xenomorphs but I felt this movie traveled way to slow. I am one of the few that did not mind Prometheus i agree it did have its flaws but I enjoyed it enough. As for this though I think it was interesting about progression of the xenomorphs but the in-between parts of the movie were just so dull. I also disliked the characters except for Danny McBride (which I dont like at all). Most of the action scenes were in the trailer as well and there was not much of a horror aspect to the movie which I thought Scott may have explored again. I think if you are a fan of the series you would enjoy it but for new comers it is a bit of a let down.

Patriots Day
I will start off by saying that I remember the events of what happened but not much of the follow up and I dont live in the US so it was low level new reports. I have to say this is one of Wahlbergs better performances even though from what I read his character was fabricated. I was engaged in every part of this film and never seemed stagnant, I also assume this was a sensitive subject for the people of Boston and the director did a good job to keep the integrity of the community. There was some seems I thought were "Hollywoodised" with the shoot out (again I did not know exactly what happened). Overall this was an enjoyable engaging film.

If you are a scientist with weaponry training on a colonisation ship YES you'll going to be proficient in using live weaponry calmly but if it's too hard because they're facing an lethal creature, they will not be that stupid and shoot in the fuel cargo!
Why do you keep thinking stupidity is the issue here? I already said it was out of panic, which is the kind of thing that stops people from thinking clearly (and I don't blame her, who can think clearly when they've just run into a never-before-seen killer alien that rips through people?). It's not like all the scientists are explicitly guaranteed to be good at using guns anyway - they do have a security detail who are supposed to be the main experts in that regard, and even they aren't necessarily a match for the creatures. Half the marines in Aliens died in the space of about five or ten minutes, after all - were they stupid as well?
and that was just the icing on the cake...
They do treat it as a "leap of faith", especially in the wake of the neutrino blast that knocks them out of cryosleep. That kind of event is supposed to shake them up, especially when they see their captain get burnt alive in his pod and worry about the likelihood of it happening to them when they're back in their pods - it's even stated in the film that the crew don't particularly want to go back into their pods after such an event. Besides, is there anything to indicate that they'd have worn protective gear to their original destination anyway, even after accounting for the extra data? Could they have known for sure if that planet had had its own killer spores? The only protective gear they seem to have on hand is for spaceship repairs anyway, which strikes me as a shortsightedness that goes beyond the (acting) captain deciding to check out a random planet instead of the main one.
Again, I don't think this is the kind of thing that can get blamed on "stupidity" so much as fear and panic. The lady in question uses infection as an excuse to lock the creature in the med-bay along with another crew member seemingly out of cowardice, though she does go back for the guns in order to shoot the alien because that's what makes sense to her at the time - it's not like she knows the other crew member is dead already by the time she opens the door.
In short, complaining about characters being "stupid" is boring.

I see no explanation that can back up everything I described in that post... some could be argued for, sure, but at least a couple of those things can't be explained in a way that makes it all okay.
And either way, just in my own personal opinion, it took me out of the movie. I didn't buy the scenario and it ruined the tension and excitement for me. The movie had plenty of pacing issues, half-assed plotlines and ideas and boring characters to not make up for stupid scenes. I didn't find much that could make me enjoy it despite of a few downsides... there were too many downsides to me.
The marines in Aliens were ambushed by the aliens and it was set up well.

Wild River (1960) 1/2 of a re-watch
I mean 1/2 of a re-watch because I had watched at least 1/2 of this movie, but that was mainly in the middle, not having seen the beginning and the end parts before. So, it still felt like a new experience to me. This is about Chuck Glover (Montgomery Clift),a Tennessee Valley Authority purchasing agent in the 1930's, sent to a river island community to try to get the last holdouts to move before the river is raised, by using the newly built dam. This is to create jobs and give electricity to parts of the state that hasn't had it before. But the Garth Island people refuse to move, led by matriarch Ella Garth, played by Jo Van Fleet, once again aged up with make-up far beyond her years (she was 45 here, made up to look around 60). Glover has trouble dealing with her, her trio of do-nothing sons, a whole town full of trouble-makers who want to hurt him, plus the "problem" of falling in love with Ella's granddaughter (Lee Remick) and what he's going to do about her, due to his responsibilities and whether or not she and her two children (she's a widow) are something he can handle in his life and career. It is a slow-moving movie but never dull and very character-driven.
This was four years after Clift's devastating car accident that resulted in him having to have facial plastic surgery that altered his handsome looks. I didn't know when the accident had happened while watching this, but I thought he looked a bit different, but still it didn't distract me. He still looked like a normal man playing a role and doing a great job at that. Van Fleet is her usual awesome self, and Lee Remick is excellent and beautiful as ever. The movie is filled with a bevy of familiar faces and is a very enthralling time.

Napoleon and Samantha (1972)
Nice little feel-good Disney live-action movie that stars a young Michael Douglas (as Danny), a really young Johnny Whitaker (from TV's Family Affair), and a really, really young Jodie Foster (in her first theatrical film, having already done scads of TV shows). This has Napoleon (Whitaker), living with his aged grandfather (played by Will Geer of The Waltons), and their adopting a tame, aged male lion named Major. They keep him in the chicken coop and feed him the only thing he'll consume, milk. So the chickens are safe. And Major stays put, being content. Then Grandpa dies and Napoleon gets his new friend Danny to bury Grandpa on his land where he was happy. Samantha (Foster) lives with her parents, who are away and have left her with the housekeeper/nanny (played by Ellen Corby, who, funnily enough, appears in this movie with her soon-to-be TV husband, Will Geer, although they don't share a scene). When Samantha catches wind of Napoleon's plan to travel across the mountains with Major to visit Danny on his farm, she tags along. They go through many Disney-lite adventures, like almost falling off a cliff, and Major fighting a cougar and a bear. There are other adventures, with Danny getting into trouble and having a well-filmed motorcycle chase with the police. Like any Disney non-animated flick, all ends well and we are all entertained and left feeling good.

Eh, in recent years I've started to realise that that's kind of a bad reason to dislike a movie. Identifying a context in which bad decisions make sense, whether dramatically or artistically, is better than just going "this sucks because the characters act stupid". Otherwise, we'd end up like that user who posted a thread about how Breaking Bad sucks because Walt's original decision to cook meth was "stupid" and "mean", even though it makes sense in the appropriate context.

I respectfully disagree. For me the characters in Prometheus were just really stupid. They were supposed to be engineers and just did stupid sht that engineers would not do. Walter is not a valid comparison. That's totally out of context.

BUT I would agree that there is a popular thing going around that professional or amature movie fans and critics just want to break down every single film in terms of logic and that is just stupid. Sitting and finding plotholes, missing character motivations, continuity errors etc is a waste of a possible good time with a movie. Even the all time greats have issues like that to some extent, so it's a pointless exercise if it's all you practice.
As stated, there was just too many things wrong with Covenant for me, but had the stated problems been less or had there been other redeeming qualities, it could have evened it out for me.

I think there's a difference between a character being stupid and character being broken in order to advance a plot. The latter is just bad writing in my opinion. When a character stops being believable, that's a problem.
(I haven't seen Covenant yet so I'm not referring to that)

Great point. I didn't think of putting it that way but that is, in a few instances, definitely correct in the case of Covenant as well...

I see by its current imdb rating, it's a slow grower with the audience. But if I remember correctly, kind of the same with The New World, wasn't it? At first people just complained it was boring and pretentious and then after a few years they were all over it with the love. I think this one may have a similar reception. (?)

I felt like Malick had taken all the wrong lessons from Tree of Life and settled for the bare minimum of that film. It felt shallow but maybe I need a new perspective on it.
I found out the story was close to autobiographical. Like 70% or something. I think this may have been what made it so inaccessible for me.

Just about. Which isn't to say ToL isn't as impressionistic as To the Wonder but it's much more inclusive. It also lacks a certain elegance in thematic connectivity.
To the Wonder expresses something very specific and I don't think I'm tuned to it.

I still haven't managed to finish The Tree of Life so maybe the films appeal to different crowds. I hated how Malick, a person who had portrayed his spirituality by transcending the environments in which his films took place within, opted for the easy route and just through in some pretty footage that was completely separate from his narrative. In To The Wonder, he makes the midwest his Biblical retreat and shows a supermarket like it's heaven and Ben Affleck being followed by the shoeless sick community like he's Jesus of Nazareth.

If that's how simple you see Tree of Life then yes you need to revisit it. But maybe you should read about it a little first to get a different perspective? Not that it will change your opinion for sure but maybe it could help.
Thing you mention is far from separate from the narrative. Linearly, yes, thematically, no. The cinematic medium is more than just a linear storyline and Tree of Life is about life in so many shapes and sizes. Also having the scientific against the religious was a nice contrast.
Tree of Life might be the most ambitious movie ever made. I probably need to revisit To the Wonder, but it felt so shallow and simple next to Tree of Life because it didn't have the same thematic weight or scale to compensate or accompany Malick's style. Tree of Life was like a spiritual dream going into the other side, To the Wonder felt like being stuck in limbo.

A little light on story and the bits where they try to touch on character development and feelings are actually the weakest, but there's plenty of blowing things up in space set to a fun soundtrack and I found it absolutely hilarious. I wasn't really commenting on the themes. As I said, I've never made it through it so I don't have opinions like that. The structure is what turned me off as it flies in the face of everything I like about Malick. It's fine for people to like it. Purgatory is definitely an apt comparison for To The Wonder as the movie is about losing connection with others. He dives deeper into disconnection with Knight of Cups which is existential af. Was also a fan of it.

Any you would recommend?
Glad to hear. That was one of my favs from them.
Since you have already seen that and Kid with a Bike and Two Days One Night you have already seen what was the most prominent ones I've seen (didn't like The Child much). That said I'm still missing a couple from their filmography... so maybe it'll be you who will guide my viewings from here on out. ;)

6/10.
Unfortunately it suffered the same issues as Prometheus but with the added problem of dodgy effects, unrealistic characters and weak story.

I also caught The Final Terror (Davis, 1983) 4 which was restored and rereleased on Blu Ray by Shout! Factory. I can't really describe why it's so much fun. It's got some camp / hillbilly slasher moments, some Blair Witch moments, and some Predator moments. The low budget, DIY charm is real.

Alien: Covenant. Because this thing would not last a week if it was called Prometheus 2. I would say this would be a disappointment but my expectations were pretty low to begin with. Now I will say it was a little better then Prometheus, but that is only because I get to see an actual Alien and not a "kinda sorta one" like in Prometheus. The movie starts off okay, then they get to the planet then it gets lame because it reminds me Prometheus was a thing, then the last 20 minutes is pretty good. But not that good. Sure the Alien on the Covenant ship made it feel like an actual Alien movie, but it is only for a few minutes and not enough for a two hour movie. Also it would be better if we skipped the whole Alien gooching one half of the naked couple in the shower scene with it's tail. Speaking of other unintentional hilarity; when David says to a one handed Walter "I will do all the fingering" when referring to playing a recorder, it sent the entire theater into awkward laughter. Otherwise this movie is kinda boring save for the last 20 minutes. Fassbender is at least good in both his roles.
Not worth the ticket price, but might be worth a rental. This needed more Aliens on the Covenant, less Prometheus ties, and more James Franco.
Kinda sucks that this is the Ridley Scott follow up to The Martian.

Alien: Covenant (2017)
I loved it. It did exactly what I expected, was never boring, and except for a "wait for the sequel" twist ending, I enjoyed every bit of it. As probably everyone knows, this is a sequel to Prometheus and I liked that movie quite a bit. But this gave us more of what the first film didn't. Aliens, and not all of them were the Xenomorph. But the different spores and viruses that David dumps on the planet of the "Engineers," as Elizabeth Shaw (played by Noomi Rapace) called them in the first film, make for different aliens. In fact, it is revealed that David himself engineered the Xenomorph as we know it, himself. All part of his plan to start a new civilization of his own creation. Which gives us an answer that the first film left open: what is David's agenda? Was he merely following Peter Weyland's instructions? Or was he acting on his own? Or did he get the idea from somebody else?
The movie also gives us an answer to Elizabeth Shaw's fate, left open at the end of the first film (and revealed more-in-depth in an internet-only mini-prologue). The new crew is fine and much looser, like in the first Alien, and we get to know them a bit before the chaos begins (except for James Franco). Michael Fassbinder not only plays David but his advanced model, Walter, as well. He's good as always. I really liked the scene where David sees a newborn Xenomorph and greets it with arms wide-open and it responds in kind, because it recognizes its creator, at least in my view. The same thing happens with the albino alien that David is somehow communicating with---maybe one he also created? He certainly had a table full of dead aliens that he had worked on before he created the "perfect" organism..
Good acting, especially by Katherine Waterston as the captain's wife, Danny McBride as the ship's pilot, and Billy Crudup as the second-in-command. Great effects also. Nothing dodgy, at least not in the print I saw. I'll argue that the shower scene was a bit iffy, but I'll defend the characters in that they didn't know that the Xemomorph was on the ship and were probably getting their freak-on because they were relieved the nightmare was over in their mind and were relaxing. Maybe a weak argument but it's all I've got and Callie Hernandez was involved, so I ain't griping. I recommend it to anyone who likes the Alien series. I was thoroughly entertained and might even spring to see it again.

Oh, I loved that one too! It's a slow, slow burn, which turned off a lot of people I recommended it to but I thought it was gripping (one of the more engaging car chases in recent memory!)
Isaac and Chastain are absolute pros in it as well, particularly the latter.
The story came very personal to me, so that probably helped. Abel is such a fascinating character.
The scene with Luisa, the way he oh so briefly allows himself to speak Spanish... wow.
It's a little detail but something so common, at least for the people I know.

In a "post apocalyptic" world, Haneke presents to us a realistic but dark and bleak outlook on mankind and as usual, the master challenges the viewers' pre-conceived ideas about genre film-making, and lets us observe closely but from far away, the hopeless characters' nightmare. It sure isn't one of the director's best works, but it's still exceptionally done, especially for its genre.

Hanger (2009)
1.5-
http://anythinghorror.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/Hanger2.jpg
I watched this because it's from the same director as Gutterballs and the story sounded good. There's a lot of sick scenes and hot chicks, but there's no personality or atmosphere to make up for the low budget.
Here's the synopsis from Wikipedia-
Unable to bring in anymore money for Leroy, her abusive pimp, the pregnant Rose tries to run away in the middle of the night, but is caught by Leroy. Using a clothes hanger, Leroy performs an impromptu abortion on Rose, unintentionally killing her in the process. Leroy disposes of Rose's baby in a dumpster, where its cries attract the attention of a homeless man, who raises the disfigured child as "Hanger".
On his eighteenth birthday, the vagrant sends Hanger off to live with John, his biological father, who the man had earlier met at a junkyard. John informs Hanger that he has gotten him a job at the junkyard, and that he will be working there and living with Russell, an acquaintance with Down syndrome. As he drives away with Hanger, John runs over the homeless man (who was defecating in his tent) and joyously tells his long-lost son "Welcome to the rest of your life!" John gives Hanger a picture of Rose, and picks up a prostitute for him to have sex with, but upon seeing Hanger's mutilated face, the woman goes into hysterics, so John crushes her head in his truck door.
While Hanger is watching pornography with Russell in their home, a Jehovah's Witness visits, and Hanger mauls and partially eats her while being cheered on by Russell. Later, John drops by, and reveals to Hanger that he has a plan to get revenge on Leroy for what he did to Rose. On his way out, John is approached by Foxy White, Leroy's girlfriend, who offers to help John kill Leroy. John turns down Foxy's offer, but says he will make Leroy suffer "a little extra" if Foxy watches over Hanger.
While Hanger is at work, John is captured by Leroy and a prostitute named Trashy, who disfigure him with a blow torch, and a hanger. Foxy finds John and tries to release him, but Leroy walks in on this, and shoots Foxy in the head. As that occurs, Russell and Hanger are drugged by Phil, a co-worker, who rapes them while wearing a Santa suit; at one point, Phil inserts his penis into Hanger's leaking colostomy. Russell and Hanger get their revenge on Phil at the junkyard, knocking him out, and placing him under a pile of garbage. Russell goes home and drinks tea made from used tampons, but after getting a call from Hanger, Russell goes to the junkyard, and finds Nicole (the owner's daughter) unconscious in her office, Hanger having knocked her out with Phil's drugs.
Russell takes Nicole's tampon, and she is later found by Leroy, who rapes her while she is unconscious, and threatens her into luring away Russell so Leroy can be alone with Hanger. Once he is in Nicole's office, Russell is seemingly killed by Leroy, who chokes him with one of Nicole's tampons. Outside, Hanger stomps Phil's head in, and is confronted by Leroy, but John (who was left for dead, but recovered and killed Trashy by shoving a douche up her nose) appears and calls Leroy out. Leroy and John fatally shoot each other, and a distraught Hanger runs off with the hysterical Nicole.

American Gigolo - 8/10
Very surprised. I've always known about this movie, what it was about.. I'm very, very surprised it only got a 6.2 on IMDB, very odd; it's usually a movie that hasn't been viewed much. Maybe people were expecting something different. I think it's pretty deep about our role in society - being whores and being used by a binary choice, two competing forces (politics and business) with the police acting as arbitration. After Kay asks "Why me?" Leon responds with "You are frame-able; you stepped on too many toes".
I still haven't saw a movie of Schrader's that I rated under a 7.5, so I'll have his movies to juggle around with a lot of other incomplete directors (some movies are just hard to find).

Okay, I'm gonna need some sort of explanation to why this film is getting such negative feedback, because I thought it was absolutely fantastic, and I genuinely can't think of a reason why someone could hate it.
This is the second film I've seen by Xavier Dolan, the first one being "Mommy", which is one of my favourite movies of all time, and just like "Mommy", "It's Only the End of the World" is beautifully shot and crafted, there's a sense intimacy in each frame, which draws us closer to our characters, which by the why play off of each other greatly and similarly to the leads of "Mommy". The cast itself is fantastic, which consists of Gaspard Ulliel, Marion Cotillard, Vincent Cassel, Léa Seydoux and Nathalie Baye, and their chemistry together is beyond the roof, especially with the well layered dialogue that they magnificently deliver.
I'm just so happy that the film turned out the way it did, and I really wouldn't change a thing about it....except for literally the last shot, which made me think: "Yummm CGI", other than that, it's a solid 4.5. Go Dolan !

From the top 100 Noirs list, but I wouldn't call it a hardcore noir. I'd describe it as a crime film/love story mix. Three convicts doing life terms escape, including a young man falsely convicted of murder. They stick together for a while committing more crime, until the young fellow falls in love and wants to go in another direction. I thought this was a good well rounded movie from director Nicholas Ray.

This is a pretty standard run of the mill horror/thriller, similar in quality and effectiveness to last year's Hush and Don't Breathe, except I thought this was a little more cliched and predictable. This movie was about a psychotic trucker, a type of character that's close to my heart. The tension and atmosphere were pretty decent. It kinda went up an octave or two; a kind of upper crust/nerd effect. Though I did notice it fading away as his willingness to fight took over.
It was this little nuance that just caught me funny.
I agree on focusing on Mads, though I felt like he was being restrained in some way. I've seen him play a reserved, contained person and you were still able to see something brewing/boiling beneath the surface.
Or perhaps that was simply because the character was a shell of his emotional self so that there was nothing beneath the exterior.
Will be looking at that on future re-watches though.
Yes Mads can do that quiet, terrifying menace so well. I thought he was scariest in this when he was running. The guy has mad moves.

Very well...
Eh, if he ranks Requiem higher than Covenant then we have a bit of a situation.
I do.
Not. :p
Okay, I'll try my best here...
1. Alien 4.5+ / Aliens 4.5
as for most fans who love the first two, they tend to switch back and forth with revisits, but right now the first one seems to hold ground. So if I had to pick it would be 1 then 2. That said though, both are excellent in their respective genres and I'm a sucker for great action flicks and Aliens is top of the line in that department, while the first is one of the very best horror thrillers ever created as well...
2. Prometheus 4-
Okay, this is a tough placement... On one hand, Alien 3 is the better Alien flick and has better atmosphere in terms of these movies, but since the prequels are canon I will rank the series as a whole. And Prometheus gave me something new, fresh, original and different, while being quite a blast too. It's dumb in places, it's muddled and/or confusing in others, but I like the energy and overall look and feel of it. Exciting, detailed vision and great visuals, especially with the practical work.
3. Alien 3 3.5-
After Aliens there could have been more to come for, but this one is already showing signs of a tired franchise that doesn't really know where to go and how to do it. I've come to love the Assembly Cut of this film because I do love the original 1-4 for nostalgia and atmosphere and I have accepted that 3 and 4 are MILES from 1 and 2, but still good in their own right, one more than the other...
4. Alien: Resurrection 3
I used to really enjoy this, but with time the problems seem more obvious. I think it's slightly underrated, but still it's a mess in tone, particularly, and it just seems weird and "off" and bringing Ripley back as a clone was reaching for a story more than ever... but the cloning theme is awesome, relevant and I love the "dont screw with nature" and all that, but it's a missed opportunity more than anything... I love a few scenes, like the underwater one and the clone room scene, but overall it's really up and down throughout.
5. AVP: Alien vs Predator 2.5
Alright, Covenant was dumb but not this dumb. Still, this is dumb fun and it's pretty clear. Two monsters fighting and with Anderson's broken, hectic direction you are just right there in this B-movie madness. I can't help but smile at a few fights and stuff in this, it is a cool movie but often in laughable ways. It's trying to be a fan thing several places, but it doesn't quite get there. Of course, it was never going to be able to please the high expectations... I really do like the story though - not the script with the dialogue and all - but the story of ancient times and the setting of pyramids and all that. Great fundament for a movie like this, poor execution...
6. Alien: Covenant 1.5+
I just really hated this. It was lazy, dumb, badly structured, boring, annoying... nothing really clicked with me. The dumb characters, the weird dialogue, the poor structure, the visual reliance on CGI, the missed opportunity to do what they originally set out to do and actually follow the Prometheus storyline, instead of opting more for a full blown Alien movie and landing somewhere in between. Disappointing.
7. AVP: Requiem 1
The only movie I have not seen recently, but I do remember it was weird and uneven as hell. Kinda fun in my younger days, but it was so messy, amateurish, cut to **** and felt like a music video, a fan film or game adaption gone to hell. Weirdest Alien or Predator movie ever created.

I watched Split, finally!
9.5/10. Re-watching unbreakable now ;).
Can I ask why so many people liked this movie. I admit James McAvoy was good but to me it was a film about nothing. Is it one of those love it or hate it type movies?

I actually cant recall now. I still loved McAvoy. I think I was less scathing of the female characters who I did not like at all on first watch. Not sure. Will have to go and reread the comments. Now you have me curious, Eq. I just remember I had a change of opinion after a chat on here.

This can't be the movie everyone is talking about.

This movie is fantastic. It's basically a 2 hour long, big budget David fan fiction and it's everything you want (and don't) from that concept.
Right away the first major death is unintentionally(?) hilarious and should get you in the right mindset for what's to come.
I will say, everything involving the... proto-morph? Uh, the white xenomorph, is actually terrifying, the first encounter particularly. Poor Amy Seimetz (whom I love and was kind of weirded out by seeing her in such a bumbling role. I only know her from Upstream Color).
From there the movie becomes a Tumblr wet dream (ew) and gives us the most hilarious sexual chemistry in the history of movie robots* followed by more proto-morph carnage.
This movie does, unfortunately, feature some of Earth's dumbest scientists (the first rules of all research are to touch or stick your face in it!) but they are a step up from the Prometheus crew.
Not that that's saying much.
Fassbender doesn't just run away with the movie, he drives to the nearest train station and boards the first he can find. He's a delight to watch in both roles (there's a moment where I was basically looking down trying to find my X-Box controller). Billy Crudup does fine work with the bare bones of a character as well, one which could have been a fascinating witness to David's motivations but never goes beyond a single sentence in description.
Katherine Waterston is also doing fine work. Like Crudup, there's not much to say about her character either but she hits all the right notes to the best of her abilities (plus she's looks super adorable in that haircut ;))
McBride, Seimetz, Bichir(!), Hernández, Ejogo and the rest of the guys are Alien cannon fodder so don't bother investing there.
Anyways, this a fun movie. At least for me. If you liked Prometheus, this should be just fine for you, if you didn't, try watching as a sort of send up of the Alien franchise.

Yeah I am not sure if I can put myself through that again, I might do some general research about the film in case I missed the point of it before venturing forth again.
Went to the cinema today to see John Wick 2. The first one was a pretty solid flick, and this got good reviews, so I was expecting this to just as good but I'm afraid I was rather disappointed by it. The action is well staged, if a bit too well staged at times (as in, very obviously choreographed) but the plot and characterisation are even thinner than the first one. I just found myself not particularly giving a crap about any of it in the end. Ho hum.*

Additional plus for polish moment. I would reduce this movie about half an hour. Malick's cinematography is rather incongruously, but like it.

Watched two (current) movies this weekend:
1.) Split
When Split first came out, I somehow avoided all the spoilers for it - that is until a friend's birthday a few weeks ago, where he proceeded to tell me the ending. In his defense, I'm not rushing to the theater like I used to, and he was under the assumption that I've already seen it. I watched it Friday, and despite me knowing where this film was going, I really enjoyed it. Where a lesser actor would have made the film not as interesting, James McAvoy totally kills it in this. It's also nice to see M. Night Shyamalasldkhfksjdhfsdfksdkjfhskdjfhsdjkshdk make something decent again.
RATING:
4
2.) Alien Covenant
Despite alot of people drinking the haterade on this, I really liked Covenant. But, I'm also a big Prometheus (and Alien 3) apologist.
I think people didn't realize this with Prometheus, and either didn't realize it with Covenant - or they just didn't like it, but Scott is taking these films in a new direction. These films aren't about the Neo/Proto/Xeno - morph anymore, but more of a Blade Runner-esque story of creation, creator, playing God, with David (Michael Fassbender); who's the new anchor for the series and the best actor in the film. My biggest gripe about Covenant is that it completely demystifies Alien, with a creation/backstory nobody really asked for. I don't blame Scott for the direction he is taking (how many times can you redo Alien and Aliens?), but the weakest parts of the movie, which I think he put in to placate an angry fanbase after Prometheus, is a retread of the franchise. Though, there is a total "Fredo, get in the plane" moment in this film that really asks you to suspend disbelief.
But, overall, I dug it. The CG is not the best, but seeing the creepy, pale neomorph massacre people in tall fields of grass and the (almost classic looking) protomorph attacking in broad daylight was pretty cool.
The biggest winner of this film was the Art Director. I'm bordering on spoiler territory, so I'll keep it brief and nonspecific as possible, but when the crew reaches a ruined city on the planet, this has got to be one of the greatest sets in modern horror/sci fi. I feel time will be more kind to Prometheus and Covenant than its contemporaries.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
(James Gunn)

3.5
Those going into this film can expect to have a lot of fun, Guardians delivers on that in spades. With lots of laughs, high thrills and excellent chemistry between the cast members and new additions, this sequel has no problem entertaining you. Expect some hiccups here and there, but as a whole Guardians is a great film.
The Guardians are well known know and their current job is protecting some powerful battery cells for a 'perfect' gold species known as the Sovereign. Rocket takes it upon himself to steal a few cells because they are worth a lot of money. Ayesha, leader of the Sovereign finds out and makes it her mission to kill the Guardians. While trying to kill them and retrieve her cells, the Guardians are saved by some guy known as Ego, who claims to be Peter Quills father. Quill, Gamora and Drax go with Ego while Rocket, Baby Groot and their prisoner Nebula stay behind to fix their broken ship.
Peter's father is played by non other than Kurt Russell and that is perfect casting. Pratt and Russell are in sync with each other and pull off a believable relationship. Another new addition is Pom Klementieff who plays Mantis. Most of her interaction is with Drax and they have a few funny bits together. I fully expect more character exploration for her in the next instalment.
The rest of the cast are great, as expected. Everyone is having a lot of fun here and that's the biggest selling point here, the film is fun. With groovy tunes, colourful cinematography and exciting action, Guardians is a great popcorn flick. It seems like Marvel has taken notes from these films for some future titles like Thor. Gunn manages to balance both comedy and action well and the film is stock full of beautiful sequences full of CGI. None of it is distracting either, which was a delight.
Despite being a funny flick, I couldn't help but feel that there was a lot of forced comedy bits. The biggest fault here is with Drax. In the original film, he was on a revenge mission for the death of his family and his struggles with interacting with the Guardians as his new "family". Here he is nothing but a one-liner of a character. I was a bit disappointed in that aspect but these are small quibbles in an otherwise highly enjoyable flick.

Darkness at his best. This is pure Lynch!
The only thing I did not like was the fact that they exchanged Lara Flynn Boyle as Doona. It would have been great to see her naked in the bar scene ... Kidding, I always find it difficult to digest characters that are changed by another actor or actress.
The Break Up (2007)
This movie started off promising. Vince Vaughn goes into early 80's Dustin Hoffman and Woody Allen territory and for a minute I get excited. Sadly the writing kills it. Aniston is fine as Vaughn's partner. She actually got my sympathy at a couple points in the film. The writing is just too stupid. You can tell the movie wants to be that great comedy drama but early on we are assaulted with nonsense shouting matches about very boring and haphazardly realized things. Dishes, lemons, etc. Just didn't make for a very weighty story since, aside from the opening scene, we have to start post relationship and then try and feel for the characters with none of the "good times" making an appearance on screen. Vaughn is a very gifted and funny man. I'm still waiting for him and his agent to make the right decision. Then again, the world needs good comedy writers with a sense of romance and they seemed to have gone up a tree somewhere.

The Shout (1978)
Difficult film to review in so little time. Best I can describe this would be, a psychological folk horror with a (possible) supernatural twist. So if any of that floats your boat then give this a watch, if you can find it. It has a great cast in Alan Bates, John Hurt and Susannah York with Bates performance especially really sinister. Despite the overall ambiguousness of the film the ending works very well. Definitely a film I can see a lot of people hating on but I enjoyed it.

Instant Death - Scottish-born indie action filmmaker Ara Paiaya's latest film stars former "Hulk" Lou Ferrigno as an ex-military officer whose attempt to reunite peacefully with his estranged daughter and granddaughter in London is shattered after witnessing a murder from a drug dealing gang led by Razor (Jerry Anderson). Razor brutalizes the daughter and renders her blind and kills the teen granddaughter.
This sends Ferrigno into a frenzy as he becomes a one-man army going after anyone who stands in his way while his former military friend and a local detective hunt him down to stop his vigilantism.
Ferrigno may be 66 years old, but he still has the size and thanks to Paiaya's choreography, Ferrigno pulls off some nice close quarter combat moves when he's not blowing away bad guys with an influence from perhaps 1985's Commando to name a few.
For a straight to DVD release, this is a really good straightforward action film that has the aging action hero still showing age can't stop him. Ferrigno is great in the film, both action and acting wise here.
Final Rating: B

The power went out twice during the first half of the screening. A guy kept clearing his throat with this strange, incredibly loud growling sound. Another guy stood up halfway through during a quiet moment, said "I'm done with this" to no one in particular (he was there alone), and marched out. Despite all that, I had a pleasant time.
I was one of those people who thought Prometheus was fine. It had a lot of issues, but I didn't hate it. This has less issues, more Michael Fassbender (David was the one part of Prometheus I really liked), and didn't do anything to irritate me or cause me to roll my eyes like in the previous film. Covenant is a little light on the aliens, but I still found it interesting, and I thoroughly enjoyed the ending.
