A Million Ways to Die in the West - 7/10

This is pretty stock McFarlen, which means that it's consistantly funny, but never really breaks into something more than that. I actually found myself more interested in the supporting characters than I was the protagonist, and like the far superior Ted, the best jokes were front-loaded into the films run time. Fun, funny and enjoyable overall, but nothing special.

Neighbors - 7/10

I wanted to like this film more than I did. It was reasonably funny, especially when you got past how awkward the neighbor couple are. It had a surprisingly great cast, servicable direction and a far better script than its simplistic premise ever needed to have. I found the frat President and Vice President to be surprisingly deep, surprisingly dark characters and I wanted to see a lot more of them working through their mid-education angst / crisis than watching their neighbors try to convince themselves that they're still cool.

Mr. Turner (2014)

What a beautiful yet tragic film. Timothy Spall actually surprised me a lot and he was able to deliver a lot of soul through a rather downtoned and passive character. That said, he did all the "little things" to perfection and really made him his own, and the character development took a few turns throughout that changed my view on Mr. Turner multiple times. I will say that the weakest aspect of this film was the script. Not the dialogue which was quite playful and a great mix of old and new, but the actual construction of the story could've been tighter and the movie a bit shorter...

The acting was great all around and the soundtrack was fitting for the movie with a simple tone able to showcase more than one aspect of the story - the sad and the good. But most of all this movie's stunning cinematography more than held up against the movie's artistic subject. This might actually be the best looking film I've seen all year. Every shot was like a painting and the director often utilized windows and doors throughout to give the audience a feel of looking directly into a framed (moving) artwork. - And particulary the use of lighting was exceptional!

But the movie is rather slow in its ways and some may not get captured enough by the characters and technical aspects. This really is a love or hate movie as far as I can see, but still no one can deny how beautiful it looks that's for sure!

4.5

Well, as said, I've watched:

http://www.empireonline.com/images/uploaded/collage5.jpg

And it's quite a disappointment. One can say that L'auberge espagnole is cliché and at some points it really forces the suspension of disbelief, but it still makes a consistant effort at reflecting aspects of immediate reality. I barely find this in Russian dolls. There is no sense of continuity among the characters that makes me believe that they are the same guys from the first movie. And there is no care for trying to make the events look realistic, they are overdone and unlikely to happen, let alone together in a piece of narration for one single character. This film basically destroy everything that was special with the first one, and offers something different, that I'd probably have enjoyed a lot more if it was an independent story with totally different characters in a parallel universe. But nah. rating_3

Oh, and on Buñuel... it's funny how, among the nine films I've watched, it's Belle de Jour the one I'm less fond of. It's a lesser work to me not only in terms of quality, but as well in terms of thematic audacity. His works are usually intense, brutal and cruel, this one is more restrained. I can't say it doesn't have its share of merit but I think that being aggressive and direct is something that Buñuel does particularly well, and after all that is the main reason why I became a fan of his films.

Sunset Boulevard (1950)

I was watching this all alone in my room and even so when appeared on the screan the words The End I had to start clapping! Perfect from every point of view! Funny, dramatic, thrilling, with such an attention to every detail and an amazing sountrack!
The performance is great from everyone but Gloria Swanson is out of this universe! Norma Desmond is one of the most incredible characters I remember seeing and Swanson brings it to life in a memorable way!
The perfect definition of a film-noir!

I have seen 6 Luis Buñuel film as well, however i find them all excellent, if i was to rank them it would probably be something like this:

1. Un Chien Andalou (1929)
2, Viridiana (1961)
3. Belle de jour (1967)
4. The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972)
5. The Exterminating Angel (1962)
6. Phantom of Liberty (1974)

While it is most definitely a great film, I always found Sunset Blvd to be far too melodramatic and stagey for my tastes. I understand that that's half of the point of the film, but it was never really an aesthetic that I cared much for (same with voice over narration and stories framed in flash forwards). Good to be sure, but not a film that I was prepossessed to like.

Irma la Douce (1963)

Irma la Douce is a wonderful romantic comedy starring Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine. These two stars have great chemistry together, and they make this movie a lot of fun. Lou Jacobi is also great as Jack Lemmon's friend and confidant. (IMO, Lou Jacobi steals the movie, and that's not easy because Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine are both excellent too.)

This movie is funny, intelligent, and very clever. I highly recommend this movie, especially for anyone who will be submitting a list of the top movies of 1963.

The Best of Me (2014) 2+

Went to the theater with my friend, so I saw it in Russian which may have tainted the viewing experience. I did understand all of the plot and the majority of dialogue so I think it's fair to pass judgement. After all this movie was just normal Nick Sparks fare. I noticed a few directing mishaps, but some of the transitions from the past to present were pretty great. I wasn't able to suspend my disbelief at the ending and there wasn't really anything special about the rest of the movie. Best part about it was being able to test my Russian understanding.

Just watched Interstellar, one of he most talked about movies this year and I'm not sure what to make of it. It's sci-fi elements are pretty high brow and high concept, which is what sci-fi should be but it's like viewing something through glass...you can never fully grasp it or feel what the people on the other side is feeling. Nolan, for me, was always the guy who could make big into intimate, he did that with Inception, he did that with TDK and to a certain extent Prestige but here everything is cold. The movie lacks the sense of sincerity that often goes into work, it's almost like, "Come see what I did, it's so cool and beautiful but hey, don't touch!" And that ending, just seemed to drag on forever.

But I have to give Nolan props for the technicality of the whole experience, a mixture of CGI and practical effects which is much needed in modern cinema, along with a cast that all delivered with a limited, almost sterile script. Add to that a very good musical score and the best part about the whole thing, those damn robots. I just wasn't expecting that, in fact I had no idea Matt Damon was even in the damn movie either, now that's good old fashioned movie making. Giving us limited trailers, not leaving too much info and allowing movie goers to discover the movie at their own pace.

I'll give it a solid 7.5/10.

Laputa: The Castle in the Sky (1986)

Just a great magical adventure of a film! Hayao Miyazaki always creates stunning and endless imaginative universes in his movies, but watching some of them I really wish he used more time creating a simpler yet more powerful bond between the audience and the universe. By that I mean that Laputa worked mainly because it wasn't too much and (ironically enough) it was more grounded. Sometimes Miyazaki tends to go in "fantasy overload" and just drown everything in weird mystical beings. It might be great if you end up watching the particular movie many times and can slowly take it apart for each viewing, but too me sometimes much of the story and characters get lost in it all.

With this film I could feel the magic and I got immersed into it all instead of getting confused and annoyed as I sometimes did with some of his films. This just had all I needed I don't know what else to say, great anime that's for sure!

4.5 give or take the last half popcorn, but I feel generous today :D

It's Such a Beautiful Day (2012)

Most amazing movie experience I've had in quite some time. I'm lost for words. I knew little about this movie and holy crap I just wasn't prepared for this at all! Simple animated style at first yet oddly unique and with a constantly developing atmosphere that turns into something completely out of this world. The film's captivating narration is like an ever expanding poetry of day-to-day doings and with a twist of humor, seriousness, philosophy and pretty much everything you could think of, crammed into this 1 hour animated mindf**k.

To all participating in the animated movies list this is an absolute MUST before turning your lists in. Even if you choose not to add it I think it is almost obligatory to watch. There is nothing like this out there.

Technically, the last movie I watched was Repo Man but since I was watching it with the audio commentary on, I'm less inclined to count it (it would still get a very, very subjective 5 from me).

Other than that, Good Will Hunting, which gets a 3 from me. It's hard not to think about how it's been riffed on a lot since it first came out (that one episode of Community that sort of parodied various elements stuck in my mind the whole time), but it's still a decent enough film. Williams is good in it, at least.

Pretty mediocre and predictable, with too many outlandish GCI stunts and big explosions to mask the lack of any memorable actors or characters you cared about. Nearly forgot about it the second I finished watching it.

H.R. Giger's design work looks great, even if the film is basically a model who can't act getting her boobs out every two minutes. A silly 90 minuite sci-fi boob-fest with a suprisingly good cast.

Sleeping Beauty - 8/10

I rewatched this childhood favorite after watching Maleficent and was surprised how incredibly well it held up. If anything, I actually appreciate it more now than I did as a kid. The uniquely flat animation, combined with the narration (which uncharacteristically didn't bother me here), gave engrossing impression of a bedtime fairy tale. The music was perfect in every seen (I especially love the seductively dark oboe segments) and the animation was perfectly choreographed to it. Even if the songs are pretty much non-entities in this film, the climax between Phillip (plus the fairies) against Maleficent is one of the most thrilling animated sequences that I have ever seen.

Event Horizon - 3.5/10

Seeing as how I watched this because it was on an episode of Movie Defense Force, the fact that it was so bad shouldn't surprise me. It was actually a really interesting idea - a wormhole in spacetime, allowing for instantanious travel between galaxies, actually short-cuts through a dimension that can most readily be described as Hell - that was simply executed extremely poorly. It relies too heavily on poor CGI, the revelation that the ship is alive came off as stupid and the actual events that occur on screen make little and less sense as the film progresses.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 - 8.5/10

Going into this, I was really worried. Although I loved the previous two novels in the series, Mockingjay was unutterably bad (for a myriad of reasons that I won't get into right now). I can unequivocally say that the film has resolved every one of my plethora of issues that I had with the first half of the novel. It is in every way superior to its source material and a cinematic highlight of an already outstanding year. This film is the narrative that the novel wanted and tried to be. And, much like with the first film, Mockingjay brilliantly shows the results of Katniss' propoganda, making her part of the war that much more meaningful than it was previously.

Pandora's Box (1929)

This is a film that is as famous for actress Louise Brooks' bob haircut as for the movie itself. As sexy as the haircut and Brooks is, the movie is great on its own. Brooks plays Lulu, a "kept" woman to a German millionaire, who is engaged to another woman. Lulu is so alluring that even the millionaire's son is infatuated with her, although he talks his dad into marrying her. This leads to the ruin of one of them. Lulu is so enticing with her beauty, her seeming innocence, that she draws people to her, to their eventual destruction. It's hard to say whether she does it on purpose, or if it's just her nature to be fun-loving and party-hearty without realizing the effect she has on the people who want her. It's not only men who want her, but a woman friend who is in love with her. Lulu ends up using almost all these people, not out of meanness but out of need to get herself out of jams. She has but to bat her eyelashes and flash her pretty smile and people are under her spell. It's not spoiling anything to say it ends badly for everyone. Yet, I didn't find this to be a downer of a movie. It's totally compelling and it's not hard to see how Brooks became a star. The copy I watched on TCM was totally cleaned up and looked brand new. Catch it if you get a chance.

The Invasion (2007) by Oliver Hirschbiegel 4-

As far as remakes of Invasion of the Body Snatchers go, I've always been fond of this one. The gender swap between the original two leads pleases me, making Kidman Dr. Bennel and Daniel Craig into the love interest, Driscoll, is a nice modern twist to the tale. Great suspense, good acting, and the Russian diplomat that shoves the theme of the movie down your throat in an early scene is quite convincing. Also the snatchers are pretty darn creepy. I don't know why imdb is so harsh on this flick.

Paprika (2006)

A film full of endless imaginative ideas, concepts, visual constructions and weirdly captivating unlinear storytelling. I was hooked almost all the way through, but I did think it messed up a bit in the end. The film sort of ended at one point (almost quite litterally actually) but then they were like "hey, we are still missing this storyline over here!" and it went on. I think they should've focused more on one of them or made a seamlessly two-part conclusion. I knew it was kind of important to conclude that side of the story as well, but they could've use less time and left it more open to its audience. Still one hell of a fascinating mindtrip with an overload of ideas where "too much" is just right - except for maybe the end as mentioned. Great anime overall!

But I still wonder why this gets so much love, though I'm totally fine with it. It's just when you think about it the story is quite simple and the execution really good but not amazing. It's a bit thin but I enjoyed it for what it was most defiantly!

The Collector 2009 - 6/10

Decent slasher flick with a cool villain (he's basically a combination of brains and brawn). Lead actor wasn't very passionate though, and it had some silly moments (ex. the hero had a gun at one point of the film, and was within a few feet out of sight of the killer several times, and didn't just shoot him).

It also never really explained the killer's MO - why did he keep some people alive and drag them around with him in a big box - then later decide to just kill them anyway on a whim?

The Collection - 3/10

This one was pretty bad. First it was way more-over-the top (apparently the killer somehow sets up elaborate booby traps in a nightclub without anyone knowing about it, and kills over 50 people all at once).

Not to mention they make the MO of the killer even more confusing. In the first film he'd kidnap a few people and slowly torture them. Now all of a sudden he's just a mass murderer - they still never explain why he keeps certain victims in the box - and then they throw in a bunch of other nonsense like his "army of junkie zombies", and weird human experiments. It seems like they just took a bunch of horror villain cliches and rolled it all up into one guy, and didn't really know what they were trying to do.

Also it's implied in the final scene that the killer is finally murdered - but in the scene just prior to that he gets doused in gasoline, set on fire, and somehow just manages to get up and walk away. If they were going to kill him off anyway, he should have just died in the fire so it would be remotely believable.

Well, for one thing, Helen is very different from all the other women in the movie. Plus she and Mark share similar personalities. He's still tempted to kill her when she's alone in his cinema for the first time, but serial killers don't generally like killing in their own home. It's like sh!tting where you eat. And once he shows her the footage of him as a kid, a bond is established. It's like anytime you share a deep, personal secret with someone or allow someone to see you at your most vulnerable-- from then on you feel connected to that person. The same thing happens with Mark and Helen. So you take that into account, along with their chemistry and how well their personalities mesh, along with what mark f mentioned about Mark's voyeurism and how he's already spied on Helen and knows what kind of person she is, then I think that explains why she's "different."

I'm glad to see that you gave Peeping Tom a chance, seanc. I was worried that you might hate it, since it doesn't really seem like your kind of movie. At least you liked it somewhat.

I don't like Nolan. In fact, I've seen all his movies and this is the first one I really like.
It starts as any other movie about end of the world (Armaggedon, etc.) and I was preparing myself to hate it after the first 45 minutes or so, but then it transforms into something incredible! There were times where I cried so much I thought I was gonna scream (not because of sad scenes, but because of the intensity and perfection of some parts). Sci-fi had been asking for something new for the last 20 years and this is it. It's probably too soon to realize the true impact of this movie in the history of cinema, but I'm guessing it will be huge!
I read some comments of people doubting the scientific true behind this but to me it does not bother me at all. I love science, Carl Sagan is my idol since I'm 15, but sci-fi is about going further than we know and risk beyond imagination and this achieved that.
I never expected that such a movie would come from the mind of Christopher Nolan, but he surprised me!

Up until the end this stayed pretty accurate to its source material. They ruined the ending though which is one of the most poignant parts of the book so I was pretty upset about that. I liked the animation style and the narration was pretty good. I wish they would have actually had the animals sing 'The Beasts of England' and I missed out on some favorite characters, but for such a short movie they fit in most of the best stuff.

I did. You know who I really liked, who I haven't mentioned yet, was Helen's mother. Probably my favorite scene is when she sneaks into his film room. I really thought there would be more confrontation between the two of them. I love how she was blind, so her heightened senses let her feel how creepy he was. I thought they would focus more on her alcoholism as well. They really hit that point home a couple times, but it ends up meaning next to nothing.

"Which is the most universal human characteristic: fear, or laziness?"

I can completely understand how someone would not enjoy this. However, and hopefully all film lovers will be able to relate here, every once in a while a film comes along and you watch it thinking it was made just for you. Recently I have been thinking a lot about where I am in my life, I am a university student who doesn't really enjoy his course and kind of wish I picked something that I enjoyed a little more, I want to be able to go out and do something in my life, to contribute something great, I'm constantly thinking of things but no that there are certain restraints, limitations in life, whether physical or in social terms, that mean I can not.

I think being at an important point in my life has lead to me dreaming more. I never really noticed it until a couple of weeks ago, but I have been dreaming a lot recently. And not just dreaming either, lucid dreaming. The first lucid dream I remember was probably when I was about four years ago now, so when I was probably fifteen, and I have them every now and again. I never paid much attention to them or never thought much about them, but in the last year, especially in the last few months I seem to be having a lot of them. I have been doing a lot of research about them as I find them completely fascinating, and even tried to control them. I seem to notice that a lot of them take place after long nights out when I have been drinking or doing other drugs. I remember last year when I was in my university accommodation I had this really long lucid dream, it was more like a nightmare, I kept peeling back the layers and trying to get out but I couldn't, and as I kept trying I had to keep reminding myself I was in a dream as you would fall back and forget this, but at the same time I knew exactly where I was in real life and it was like I was stuck there.

I knew this film had a lot of philosophical stuff from the posts of you guys recently, and after the first fifteen minutes I began to found it a bit less interesting. The peak of my interest in terms of that stuff was definitely the Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke scene. I have many times thought exactly what Julie Delpy's character says, about how life is just you relieving your memories. You are already dead, it is inevitable and you are now watching your memories back through your eyes, you are even reliving moments like this when you predict that you are going to relive them.

What I did not know, and this links back in to my first two paragraphs, that this movie was so focused on lucid dreams and the connection between reality, dreams and the way your body and brain works. I knew it was about dreams, of course, but not lucid dreams and not that it would go in to so much detail. I found the film absolutely fascinating and relatable in the weirdest ways possible. I feel like I have experienced many similar moments or thoughts in my life or in my dreams.

I do not think I have anything else to say really in regards to why I loved it so much, the animation style was fresh and totally fitted the content of the movie, I can not imagine the possibilities of the dream world being captured in any other way. An incredibly inspiring film that makes me want to go out and do something great with my life, it might sound silly, but it is one hundred percent true. Needless to say this will be at the top end of my animation list, and I really hope that some other people like me watch it and love it.

Yeah, I too loved the dreamy aspect of the film, at times it felt as if I was inside the dreams myself. I really did appreciate this element about the film. But it's just so philosophical and relies so much on dialogue that it nearly totally ruins it (at least for me). Dreams are all about feelings, about getting lost in them, floating in them (like the protagonist does from time to time)... but Linklater chose to mix the fantastic dreamlike imagery with dialogue a first-year student of philosophy would write. For me it could have been a masterpiece, but it's just far from being one.

Yes! That rating makes me so happy. I'm glad you enjoy it so much. I thought you would because as you said, it could be argued it's more for adults than it is for kids, lots of movie references that only adults will get and the overall mannerisms/languages used by the characters are quite adult (like the bar scene). A real movie lovers movie for me with so many great scenes that act as homages to more great films.

I honestly think it's the best animation I have ever seen in terms of actual animation design too. The characters are so meticoulously designed, the scales on the creatures can be scene one by one, it's so gritty and detailed.

I don't think there's anything like it really, I understand it's quirkiness might not be for everyone, but I'm glad that quite a few MoFos on here seem to like it too now.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014)

This was a major surprise back when I saw it at the theatre in the summer. The fact that this could easily get the stamp as your typical "blockbuster flick", and to find out it was so much more than that was a great thing. Especially the extremely daring decisions made with a movie of that scale and budget. When you think about it the action is very minimal, and the brave choice of focusing completely on the apes for like 80-90% of the film and on top of that with plenty of silent scenes with sign language by the apes, was a great surprise and it worked to great effect as well. The visuals were amazing, the soundtrack great, the story well-balanced and with its focus the right place. I wish we would get more "blockbusters" like this one. A pleasant rewatch this was!

Midnight Cowboy (1969)

Not what I expected at all. The nightmarish sequences and scarred experiences from childhood were a surprise and it worked on occasions and some times it didn't. I loved the acting obviously, and Dustin Hoffmann completely stole the show for me, he was absolutely stunning in this. And without the acting of Hoffmann and Voight I'm not sure if I would've even enjoyed it. The last 30 minutes were quite powerful but the actual story as a whole was not as well structured as I hoped, and the friendship and experiences of each individual was not really enough for this to be a truly great picture. It had its moments, but I'm always honest with movies (and everything else for that matter) so this time around the rating is like this,

It's my third John Ford's movie and so far my favourite. An amazing attention to details, very good writing and very theatrical performances but in a good way! Fonda is amazing on this one.
The thing that scares me the most about this film is that everything is so similar to the actual days. People being looked at like numbers, losing all their life's work to nameless entities, servants of the money.
Society didn't change much in the last 70 years.

Saw series -6/10

I finished watching the whole series and I'm not gonna bother rating each individual film.

Overall this is one of the better, if not the best horror film series out there (which may not be saying a lot considering a lot of the horror films I've seen). But regardless, it has a clever and memorable villain, and a lot of creative death traps, and ends up keeping the continuity across the films surprisingly well. I really expected the films to be a lot worse than they are. They aren't strict "slasher" films, they've got elements of crime and mystery films there too (just with lots of graphic torture).

If you can stomach the torture and gore then it's worth a watch. But I highly recommend watching the films in order, or else you'll have a tough time making heads or tails of anything.

The first film is the best in the series, with decent acting and a good sense of mystery. Once you get to the 3rd film it begins to go downhill, but never gets downright awful and still keeps you hooked. Films 3 and onward also rely way too much on flashbacks of the previous films attempting to fill the viewer in; which becomes annoying, and doesn't help much either (because if you haven't seen the earlier films, or at least read cliff notes you're not going to understand anything anyway).

The 4th film is definitely the worst in the series (it's a convoluted mess is almost impossible to follow), and the 7th is the second worst (most of the killings in that film have little to nothing to do with the actual plot, and the victims of the killer act poorly showing little emotion even as they endure torture).

The premise of the films also becomes less believable once the original Jigsaw dies and is replaced by his successor (Hoffman) - the Hoffman character comes across way more as a thuggish brute without a lot of intelligence, and doesn't fit the profile of an evil genius capable of designing elaborate traps for his victims.

Apparently an 8th film has been scheduled despite the 7th having been originally been announced as the last - I might see it but I have a strong feeling that it jump the shark at that point.

Was great to see the entire cast back again, and getting up to all sorts of ghastly stuff...Definitely a couple of cringe moments in this one! Very well done in my opinion.

4 out of 5. (added an extra .5 for the addition of Joseph Gordon-Levitt, haha).

2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)

What is there to be said about this that hasn't already been said?

So, this was a rewatch, and while I defiantly liked it the first time around I didn't love it - although I did see why people love it so much and I quickly realized that this was a film that even multiple viewings wouldn't be satisfactory enough. But still, I wasn't quite sure if I was ever going to really see this as the masterpiece it is. Yes, obviously, even with the first watch I could easily call it a landmark or rather the landmark in sci-fi cinema and one of the most important movies ever. But would it ever be a masterpiece among my personal ratings and reviews? Apparently so, yes.

Never have I ever felt quite this way with a film. While the first 1/3 or so defiantly has it's high moments, it gets a tad slow sometimes though never actually what you would call boring. But when the last 2/3 starts the movie just never let go. I don't think I've ever finished watching a movie and felt like I got all my senses stimulated at once. '2001' appeals to all the feelings in your entire body, the heart, and most certainly the brain. Especially with the very last minutes of the film I felt like my mind was boiling over, even though I did see it once before I never got captured like this time around. There is simply no other film like this out there, it's an experience you'll never have with any other movie and one you never quite forget. It is truly like a crazy time travel into the unknown... Some things you think you understand. Some you know that you don't. And some you have no f*cking clue about what so ever, but you are still sitting with your eyes glued to the screen like your life depended on it.

Birdman (Or the Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014)

This movie is not for everyone. Movie-goers who are into conventional Hollywood films or science fiction will most likely be disappointed.

I found the movie captivating. Michael Keaton plays a part that could be loosely based on Michael Keaton himself, a washed up actor who is famous for playing a superhero in a blockbuster franchise many years ago and is now struggling to stay relevant by reinventing himself as a Broadway actor, writer, and director.

The performances are all top notch. The movie's long takes are spellbinding. The movie is extremely strange, but funny and touching at the same time. I expect Oscar nominations for director Alejandro Inarritu and actors Michael Keaton, Emma Stone, Edward Norton, Naomi Watts, and Zach Galifianakis.

Ghost (1990)

Re-watched this today with my family. Heavily flawed, but still amazingly sentimental and funny thanks to the Righteous Brothers classic song, Unchained Melody, and Whoopi Goldberg. Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore are not 2 of the best actors and their parts could have been played better by other big names, but it doesn't affect the movie as a whole.

And I still get a little mushy at the end. Definitely a guilty pleasure.

A childhood favorite loosely based on true events with themes of acceptance and courage. I would highly encourage anyone making an animation list to consider watching this one.

This is and old fashioned romantic adventure with some unexpected humor. It reminded me of The Adventures of Robin Hood, which I totally love, but the leading man can't match the ultra charismatic Errol Flynn, and I thought some of the sets were unconvincing. All in all it's a fun movie.

I'm really happy this was on my animation watchlist, really unique adult animation. One part The Secret of NIMH, one part Plague Dogs, and all cat noir. It takes some getting used to hearing animated cats cuss and doing other things, but overall worth it. I did see the killer a ways off, but I often have that problem with noir maybe it's just me. The theme song is great, animation can be shaky but generally fits in well, and the nightmare sequences were pretty brilliant. Hope I'm not the only one that stumbled upon this preparing for their animation list.

The Grapes of Wrath (1940)

It's my third John Ford's movie and so far my favourite. An amazing attention to details, very good writing and very theatrical performances but in a good way! Fonda is amazing on this one.
The thing that scares me the most about this film is that everything is so similar to the actual days. People being looked at like numbers, losing all their life's work to nameless entities, servants of the money.
Society didn't change much in the last 70 years.

9/10

It's not only my favorite film directed by John Ford, but one of my favorite films period. But actually, during that time, there was change. FDR's New Deal, as exhibited by the last camp. But we've turned the economic turn to the right, and people are working more for less. One of the best lines was from Tom, when he mentions "Reds" - and how anyone who wants a penny more a day is considered a "Red" and of course FDR was accused of being a socialist, but he laughed, he didn't get defensive.

I'd also give it a 9 or 10 out of 10. With Fonda, you're guaranteed great acting, and it's suspenseful without it being over-the-top; a very humanistic film.

I think this is my favorite animation of the day, though Felidae definitely gives it a run for its money. The animation often looks like watercolors and really adds to the scenes of rural England. I didn't like the look of the blood in the animation, but I guess that could be seen symbolically. The music matched well with the freshness of the animation. The characters were very fleshed out and intriguing, definitely make you care what happens to them. The rabbit mythology is a highlight for me and probably bumped up this film by .5, very well imagined as one would expect from a movie based on a book.

Now I have watched every western made by Leone. This is the more conceptualistic of them all, the one where a social and human vision is more obvious! It's not a typical western with duels but it's an allegory to revolution! The soundtrack is again amazing (Thanks, Morricone) and those flashbacks are wonderful, specially the last one!

The Thrill of It All (1963)

The Thrill of It All is a wonderful romantic comedy starring James Garner and Doris Day, who have fantastic chemistry together. Doris Day's character, Beverly, is offered the chance to star in a series of TV commercials selling soap, but it strains her relationship with her doctor husband, Gerald, (played by James Garner).

This movie has a lot of laughs, and it also has some great drama. This is one of my favorite romantic comedies. I highly recommend this movie.

Move Over, Darling (1963)

Move Over, Darling is a remake of the 1940 classic My Favorite Wife starring Cary Grant and Irene Dunne. I'm a big fan of the original, and it's tough to find a remake that's as good as the original, so I didn't get my hopes up too high for the remake, but this move was almost as good as the original.

Move Over, Darling stars James Garner and Doris Day, and again, they have fantastic chemistry together. The remake stays faithful to the original, and it's just as funny as the original movie. The final courtroom scene is hysterical.

I highly recommend this movie, regardless of whether or not you've seen the original version.

A Scanner Darkly (2006)

A Scanner Darkly is an animated sci-fi thriller starring Keanu Reeves and Robert Downey Jr. It's an interesting story about the police efforts to stop a dangerous drug epidemic, but it's just a little bit too strange for my tastes.

The animation is unique because the film was shot digitally and then animated using interpolated rotoscope, so it doesn't have the look and feel of normal animation, but it works well for this story.

Well I take back what I said a few hours ago, this is the best animation I've seen today. I haven't been hit in the gut by an animation since I watched The Lion King when I was really young and in recent years Up. This one is much more powerful than The Lion King of course. The music is very memorable and that song for the brilliant last scene gave this movie that extra umph it needed for me to consider it for a 5. Snitter, Tod, and Rowf are great characters, but Snitter's character is especially powerful. This will definitely be on my animation list.

Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/8f/GOTG-poster.jpg

I was pretty hyped to see the movie, I must admit. Everywhere you look there are tons of avatars, wallpapers etc.and people all around are saying "I am Groot!", like it's the new "May the force be with you". On top of that, Guardians got pretty good ratings on rottentomatoes.

Well... the movie turned out to be not quite up to par with my expectations. The very first thing that almost immediately disturbed my watching experience was the cinematography. Everything is kinda blurry and appears to be glowing. It looks more like a badly designed video game with too many filters on than a proper movie. What worries me is that this seems to be becoming an increasingly popular style in movies. Personally, I find it repulsive.

Other than that, the story fails to amaze. It's your usual beat-the-bad-guy-and-save-the-universe kind of deal. I'm not saying that it's bad, but I expected something more original from a movie with this kind of acclaim.

The characters, at least, were quite diverse and likable. Especially Groot, of course. Come on, the guy was saying the same three-word-line throughout the movie and yet he was interesting! Gotta count for something.

As for the humor, yes, the movie had me laughing here and there but it's not exactly a comedic masterpiece.

Overall, Guardians of the Galaxy is... quite forgettable. I just can't see myself looking back at it ten years from now and thinking: "oh yes, what a great movie that was". I think I will more likely say: "Hmm... was that the animated movie with the Easter bunny and Santa, or am I confusing something?".

There is, however, something that's not forgettable about this movie at all, and that's the soundtrack, and no, I'm not talking about the score, I'm talking about Awesome Mix Vol. 1. It's a collection of great songs of decades past, all mastered in such a way that it sounds like it's actually played from an old tape. While I normally advocate sound quality over unreasonable sentiments, this is the one time I'm going to make an exception.

I guess these days every year needs its big flashy movie about humans going into space that ultimately falls apart due to bad writing. 2012 had Prometheus, 2013 had Gravity, and 2014 has Interstellar. Even the good bits feel way too derivative to truly enjoy (the score that rips off Koyaanisqatsi, for instance).

A Scanner Darkly (2006)

https://40.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m99xnqXYY51qflvm6o5_500.png

This is a cool, weird and pretty intense flick.

It's a noirish sci-fi film about an undercover agent, called Bob Arctor, who's infiltrating in a drug environment for the secret agency called 'New Path'. We learn about his past and current life and we see him get more and more addicted to the drug he's supposed to fight. Because of strange circumstances, he suddenly receives the task to investigate himself.

A victim of his own drug investigation, Arctor starts to become schizofrenic. Failing to ask himself the right questions about his condition and the ultimate purpose of his task, he doesn't realize that he's part of a much bigger plan...

The film is very intruiging and has a weirdly "narcotic", trippy feeling to it (in a good way). The plot is kind of complex and takes a few side roads before it gets to its point (like every good noir story), but after the confusion and mystery, I think the film offers a satisfying conclusion that stays morally and narratively ambiguous and "open" enough to make it interesting and worth thinking about.

This means that I have yet another candidate for my animation list.

The Wind Rises - 7.5/10

While this isn't the Miyazaki swan song that it was making itself out to be, it is neve-the-less an enjoyable, magical and immensely moving film. Personally, I found myself profoundly more interested in the protagonist's obsessive commitment to perfecting aviation technology despite his complicated feelings toward creating weapons that will be used to kill and destroy than I was in his purely fictitious personal life (which all seemed pretty dull to me). The dream sequences, interplay between imagination and reality and more fantastical elements were well done and under-utilized and I would have loved seeing more of them as well. It has perhaps the most haunting closing line of any film I have ever seen: "airplanes are beautiful, cursed dreams waiting to be swallowed by the sky."

Alien 3 - 6/10

I watched this (and the next film) purely because of the Movie Defense Force episodes that feature them (same with Event Horizon). And really, all told, this wasn't a bad film: undeserving of its poor critical reception as well as my initial reception of it. It was a perfectly servicable installment into a franchise in which the only film that I really care enough to watch on a regular basis is the first one. And, like Movie Defense Force's Jim Sterling rightly points out, it takes the franchise to its only logical outcome: not survival, but at best mutually assured destruction. Ultimately, what kept this movie down for me was poor CGI, criminal under-use of the Xenomorph, not experimenting enough with the Xenomorph's newfound ability to incorporate biological traits from its victims and the fact that the movie ran about 30 minutes too long

Alien: Resurrection - 6.5/10

Like Alien 3, this film is, I feel, unduely criticised and ultimately average. Despite being even more of a stock slasher film than Alien 3, it is in almost every way superior to it. The special effects are vastly superior (thanks in part to improved technology and in part to a return to more physical props for the Xenomorphs), it has a superior cast, it far better directed and is far more ambitiously written (even if it ultimately isn't as well written). The underwater is a phenominal composition of special effects and choreography and a legitimate highlight for the series as a whole.

Annie Hall - 7/10

This was supposed to be Vertigo, but that had to be postponed to tomorrow due to time constraints (ie, my girlfriend's understandable need to be up at 5:30 AM to get ready for work). I actually have some pretty complicated feelings toward this film, which is weird given how relatively straight-forward the whole thing is. It was intelligently written - touching on a lot of heavy themes effectively while still keeping its light-hearted tone - constantly broke the fourth wall in meaningful ways (something which I always love seeing) and was riotously funny and immediately quotable from scene to scene. When it really comes down to it, however, despite enjoying it in-the-moment, I never really found it engaging on a larger level; I could never really enjoy the overall film as a unit. It's a film that I ultimately appreciate more than I enjoy despite how much I actually enjoyed it.

Charlotte's Web (1973)

As much as I didn't want to watch this because of my fear of spiders, I watched Charlotte's Web for the animation list, and it was better than I expected it to be, but keep in mind that I watched some of it through my fingers the way some people watch horror movies.

This is a cute story about how a spider helps save a pig who is destined to be killed. It was a hard watch for me, but I think most people will enjoy this movie. The characters are cute and fun, and the songs are enjoyable. The voice cast is excellent, and it helped that many of the voice actors are among some of my favorite actors. Debbie Reynolds as the voice of Charlotte the spider made it much easier for me to watch. (I had expected to hear a spider sound like Vincent Price, or some other horror legend.)

It probably won't make my list (for obvious reasons), but this is a good movie, and I would definitely recommend it.

The first thing I thought of immediately after the movie finished was "I can't believe I've only just seen this now". This movie was great, maybe even a bit better than great. Denzel's performance was solid and damn near perfect as always.

The tension seemed to just keep building throughout the entire movie and never dropped off. Kept me glued to the screen the whole time, wondering what was going to happen next.

Very good action/thriller indeed!

Did you watch it in German?

I know German is the film's original language, but I kind of want to watch it in English. I heard the English voice cast was quite good (featuring Michael Madsen amongst others).

I watched it in English and really liked the voice acting. (yes, horrible me not watching a film in its original form)

The dragon was so cute I couldn't do other than adore it. What can I say, I'm a weak woman.

Overall the movies were ok, which made me sad is that after seeing the first one I immediately guessed what the second one is going to be about. And I was right. Quite dissapointed about being right without looking at spoilers, but the movie was still good. Nothing special but far from bad at my eyes.

As much as I didn't want to watch this because of my fear of spiders, I watched Charlotte's Web for the animation list, and it was better than I expected it to be, but keep in mind that I watched some of it through my fingers the way some people watch horror movies.

If I ever hit a car in a parking lot and try to get away with it, and you're chasing me down and taking pictures of my license plate like you did that one girl, I'm going to draw a picture of a spider and throw it at you.

That would probably work.

One night, I was driving during a thunderstorm, when a spider walked across the windshield INSIDE the car. I was right near a police station, so I immediately pulled the car over, and got out, (in the pouring rain), and flagged down a police officer to kill the spider.

He thought I was crazy, (and he may have been right), but he killed the spider for me.

Much better this time around!

Some suggestion to get better could be:
- Be sure to variate your different points, topics and mostly your language, so 'great' and 'movie' and stuff like that isn't said too much and make it all too repetitive and eventually boring to listen to.

- Get to the point faster. That means not too much chit-chat, especially a much shorter summary of the movie as most people only need the basics. They can read the summary on the internet. What they can't read though, and what you can give them, is a good review. So be sure to focus on that, and not so much explaining the overall plot and movie.

- Either get really good at remembering what you are going to say or do the much easier and preferred way: throw in some quick edits so you barely have any pauses or 'buts' in there. It makes it sound/look smoother and more professional. Look at this guy's edits for example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ie2iDViv8aY&list=UUCqEeDAUf4Mg0GgEN658tkA&spfreload=10

But it's always nice to see someone with passion for movies and wanting to express themselves, talk about them, and so on! Keep up!

I wasn't a giant fan of the first two Dirty Harry films (Dirty Harry and Magnum Force) but I still found them enjoyable and good movies. The Enforcer however, was pretty bland. It didn't have surprises or twists like the first two films and not overall very interesting or fun. Clint's Harry character isn't as awesome as he was before and having his sidekick being a women was pointless and her death was predictable. Almost to the painful level.

This movie does a lovely job of portraying the tension and danger of living in an urban environment like Detroit. I thought someone was going to die or get severely injured in at least two scenes in this movie. The scenes of Rabbit's home life and work fit in well with the theme and were sharply executed. I could have done without the love story and I wanted to see more of the underground rap scene. Then again I probably could watch two hours of Eminem rap battles without any story.

Animal Farm (1954)

Strong political subject and very well executed. A little harsh for kids maybe, but it is still a movie that can entertain and educate all. I was pretty surprised actually, I thought it was going to be mediocre at best, but there were plenty of turns, changes of pace and good animation throughout to keep me more than interested!

And it's surprising that it is from the 50's. It still holds up very well, and not just because of its subject. Great animated movie.

Perfect Blue (1997)

A drama-thriller disguised as "just another anime". It's not. The story is so much more; ambitious, tense, exciting and nightmarish. I was kept in my seat all the way through and the playful editing was also a great joy to look at.

It's a pretty crazy ride, but in some way the film feels grounded throughout and even if I sometimes got a bit confused it didn't take me out of the story. It felt fitting and as a part of "the experience" so to speak. I enjoyed it quite a bit.

Avalon (2001)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/2/24/Avalonenpolognetheatricalpolish.png

Time has finally come for me to share an opinion on a Polish film. I should probably explain that I don't often venture into the world of Polish cinema as most Polish films are simply rubbish as far as I care. The mainstream stuff in this country are comedies with the same actors over and over again, gangster movies and war movies. Very rarely does one see something that doesn't fit into one of those categories. Suffice it to say the movies are not anywhere near Hollywood level.

Avalon, however is not mainstream. I saw it for the first time years ago while I was watching late night TV. God knows Polish television would never show anything that's actually original and interesting during daytime, so at night they play some rare gems "for nerds".

Before I go on to explain why this is, in fact, a rare gem, I should first mention that it's not 100% Polish. Actually it's Japanese-Polish. It's quite a mix. Mamoru Oshii directed it, Kenji Kawai composed the soundtrack, and the Polish team provided the acting, most of the cinematography and locations.

The story is a fantasy of every Call of Duty fan. There's an illegal FPS game to which the player literally hooks up their brain and they feel like they are actually in there. It's very realistic and there is money to be earned if you are good at it, so naturally, it's quite addictive and also, apparently, very dangerous as some people, after having been shot in-game become brain-dead for the rest of their life. The game is called Avalon. The plot follows Ash, a young woman who aspires to be the best of the best at it.

As I had mentioned, the actors are Polish. Sadly, this isn't exactly a prime example of the Polish style of acting. The actors don't seem to care at all about anything other than their paychecks. As a result, the characters come off soulless. Also, there are some English words in the movie. Every single actor pronounced those differently, rarely correctly. They didn't even care enough to look into a bloody dictionary, which I will simply have to call incompetence.

As far as the cinematography goes, the typical Polish pretentiousness clearly found its way into this flick. Everything is overly styled, the colors are washed out and brown-ish. The image is blurry all the time. On top of that, the sets are nothing to shout about, and all of that is accompanied by long, silent, often pointless shots typical of the Polish movie-making style.

However, there are good things about Avalon. For instance, it features a great soundtrack. The movie took advantage of it properly by actually having a scene where the Polish National Philharmonic Orchestra performs a live concert of the main theme in a theater while the main character engages in her final fight. Points added for making something like this make sense. Also, despite the fact that the score was composed by Kenji Kawai, the chorus is in Polish, so another points added for making it sound more location-appropriate.

The story itself is actually quite good and makes for a decent movie-watching experience, if you are willing to see past the lifeless acting. The thing about it is that it would be even better in the form of anime. And that begs the question: why isn't it, then? Well, I have no idea. After all, Mamoru Oshii is an acclaimed anime director (known, among others, for Ghost in the Shell). If it was an anime, the special effects (which are decent but didn't age very well) could be replaced with great animation. That would also do away with the horrendous acting and the general Polish cheesiness.

For reasons I cannot fathom, however, it's a live-action picture, and with all its faults it has this strangely likable aura around it. The story takes place in an alternate universe, in Poland, which looks a bit like it's the 40's. Then again, there are shots in which you can see a tram with modern advertisements on it. The buildings are old and furnished with antique stuff, but then you have computers and machines which allow you to enter virtual reality. In-game, the characters are wearing WWII tank driver and pilot uniforms and yet there are futuristic military choppers with double rotors flying around. None of that stuff makes any sense what so ever. As if that wasn't enough, by the end, Ash enters the final "class" which takes her to... Warsaw, as it actually looked like in 2001. From that moment, the colors are natural and all the blur and filters are gone. The irony is, that all those weird environments were supposed to be reality, while the real reality is actually virtual reality. That's some interesting stuff right there.

That weirdness of the whole thing and the very fact that this movie exists at all and nobody I asked in Poland has even heard about it make Avalon a pretty rare species. It's a good Polish movie, but not really, also it's sci-fi, which is something the Polish almost never do, and it's faded into obscurity, while other, much worse Polish movies are watched by so many.

So would I recommend it? Yes. Not for the movie, not even for the story, but for the odd experience itself. Good luck trying to find a decent copy of it, though...

I didn't know anything about The Adventures of Tintin except that Steven Spielberg was somehow connected to it, but I watched it because it was recommended by a couple of people on the animation thread.

In short, this movie is excellent. It's like watching a version of Indiana Jones when he was younger. The adventure is thrilling, the music is perfect, and the animation is so good that it doesn't even feel like an animated movie.

Anyone who is a fan of the Indiana Jones movies, should definitely see this movie. It would be a shame if The Adventures of Tintin doesn't make it onto the MoFo animation list.

All three of those films lack story, yet boast in the visuals. The most immersive of the 3 is Gravity, so I will give it points for succeeding in what it tried to do.

Vertigo - 7.5/10

While I really did very much like the film as a whole, I can't help but be surprised by people not only calling this Hitchcock's masterpiece, but debatably one of the best (if not the best) film(s) of all time. I can't even really chuck this up to "It was good, but not the film that I imagined that it was going to be" syndrome.

I found myself (after looking up its reception upon release) agreeing with most of those mixed early reviews. While I'm on the fence about its length and pacing (two things that were heavily criticized in early reviews and which my girlfriend hounded on pretty heavily herself), I was shocked at how over-directed this was despite Hitchcock's stylish, but inobtrusive style that marks the vast majority of his career (the dream sequence in particular was off-puttingly over-done).

The murder twist seemed pointlessly added on to a film about obsessive desire and relational dysfunction as a means of adding a third act twist and spicing up the climax. The character of Midge seemed likewise unnecessary in the film's current form; in fact, I would have far preferred it if the murder plot was done away with, if Midge opted to transform herself into Madeleine to break Scotty about of his depressive funk and if his obsession directly caused her death in the exact same manner.

Still, I can't argue that it's not a great film in its own right. The cast, set design, costume design and handling of its dark themes are amazingly well done. And, despite arguing that Hitchcock over-directs the film, his trademark direction is none-the-less an additional draw for it (even a "bad" Hitchcock film is better than most of its competition).

While I haven't seen much of Hitchcock's pre-Hollywood career, this is my least favorite of his films that I've seen. It doesn't live up to Psycho's brilliant simplicity, Rope's inspired us of color, Rebecca's surprisingly high-quality melodrama, or even Dial M for Murder's use of mystery (to say nothing, of course, of The Birds, North by Northwest and Rear Window).

La resa dei conti a.k.a. The Big Gundown (1966) The movie is freakin' cool. I give it rating_4. Make sure to watch Sollima's film Faccia a faccia. It's not as great as The Big Gundown in my book, but the majority of people seem to disagree with me on this one. Still a cool flick. If you're in need of spaghetti recommendations, feel free to hit me either in this thread, or in private message. I've seen quite a few of them and would love to share.

Here it comes another famous movie I did not watch because I wrongly thought it was overrated. Man do I miss films when I think like that..

The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

4.5
I've never liked a musical more than this one. I absolutly loved the movie, even tho it does not fit with Disney's style at all. And after reading the Wikipedia I have no idea why Burton got so much credit for the movie after everyone makes it clear that he wasn't there during the project, which took over 2 years.

Eitherway putting that aside, the soundtrack was wonderful, it just fit every scene, it didn't even get annoying ONCE. Also the gates in the trees for different towns, and at the end jumping into the "real world", oh that was something very original.

Good Will Hunting (1997) rewatch

Oh how I just love this movie! Just a well-crafted, fun, witty and beautiful piece of cinema. People can say what they want about this, but it has so much going for it and usually I write a few notes on what I like and what I do not like, but it's hard to describe a movie that just gives you this feeling of pleasure and of joy. That you had a good time and know what the qualities are but why write about them when you can feel them. It's okay if you don't love this movie but how you can dislike it, that I would not be able to understand. :p Anyways, great experience to revisit this great great movie.

Vertigo - 7.5/10

While I haven't seen much of Hitchcock's pre-Hollywood career, this is my least favorite of his films that I've seen. It doesn't live up to Psycho's brilliant simplicity, Rope's inspired use of color, Rebecca's surprisingly high-quality melodrama, or even Dial M for Murder's use of mystery (to say nothing, of course, of The Birds, North by Northwest and Rear Window).

Are you sure you've seen the right movie? The use of color in Vertigo is about as inspiring as it gets, in my opinion.

Gbgoodies, Partly Cloudy is probably the only Pixar short I've seen and I'm glad you liked it. I saw it on YouTube one day just because I liked the look of the animation and I was really pleased with it. 4.5

And funnily enough, I watched Charlotte's Web last night. I waited so long to watch it (having never read the book) that someone eventually spoiled the end for me. Well, not all the end. Usually, music in an animated movie doesn't bother me (as most of them have it) but it did in this one. I'm not saying it was bad...it just didn't work for me. The voices of the characters were uniformly good, especially Paul Lynde as Templeton the rat. The scene with him gorging himself on circus garbage and bloating himself was my favorite scene. I give it 3.5

Latest watch was Walk of Shame (2014)

This was a fun, easy-going movie. It may be a bit predictable in parts, but the actors sell it. Especially Elizabeth Banks as the lead character, Meghan, a local news anchor who hopes to make it on a big network gig. But she learns right away that the big boys are probably going for another anchor, and her boyfriend breaks up with her the same day. So, after a night of partying and hooking up with a new guy (James Marsden), she sneaks out and attempts to start her day when the major network reps are to check her out. Nothing goes right for her and she is stranded in a strange part of town and forced to take her "walk of shame" across town, meeting all sorts of strange characters and getting in trouble after trouble. Two of the leads, Banks and Gillian Jacobs (from the TV show "Community") are a couple of my favorite actresses, so I was game from the get-go, but the rest of the cast is fine. It's not perfect but it's a good time to be had. The yellow dress Banks wears is a major star also. :randy: 3.5

Sad to read you didn't like the songs. Of all the animated musicals I enjoyed as a child, Charlotte's Web is the only one I still like and the songs are part of that. But yes, Templeton at the fair is definitely the highlight of the film.

I've been watching (or re-watching) most of the Pixar shorts, and some of them are really good. I hope a few of them make it on the animation list.

It might be my fault that someone spoiled the end of Charlotte's Web for you. I was a bit nervous about watching a movie with a spider in it, so I started asking questions about the ending on the animation thread. Sorry about that.

The Purge (2013)

Well I didn't hate it but it seemed like I had seen this movie before... hello The Strangers. It is one of those movies where the concept is good but they restrict it with the location. I have not seen the Purge: Anarchy yet and heard it takes care of the locale, I still found it hard to like the characters as well and wasn't really shocked with the ending. There are also things you would have to question like how could this annual purge actually even work. The special features interview with the director said something interesting is that if this ever happened it would be a plot by the government to get rid of poor people as they could not afford protection. Something to ponder I guess.

The Omen - 8/10

Even though I feel that this pales against other horror films from the 60s and 70s, it is still an incredibly ambitious and well-made feature. It starts a little slow, but hurriedly picks up the pace after establishing the narrative, The investigative scenes were incredibly well handled, the photographer's role was especially interesting and the climax was as exciting and memorable as anything I've ever seen. Well acted, well written, well directed - the only negative thing that I can really say about it is that Damien's powers seem a bit overly ambiguous, as if they kept things vague so that he is exactly as powerful as the narrative requires him to be at any given point of time.

Porco Rosso - 3.5

Comes across as one of Miyazaki's lesser efforts in the wake of Kiki's Delivery Service, but that doesn't make it a bad film by any means. The dogfights are cool and Porco is a fairly well-written character, but the whole thing generally smacks of diminishing returns.

This movie was made out to be the funniest movie of the year last summer.

The first one was hyped up the same way and was met with critical acclaim and many fans. I found that one to be just okay.

This one was funny, but just not as great as everybody has made it out to be.

Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill might have great chemistry but I just don't feel it. It doesn't come close to the chemistry between, say, Mel Gibson and Danny Glover, or Will Smith and Martin Lawrence.

It's just...okay

This was like The Straight Story from David Lynch for me. I always knew Lynch was great, but I wasn't that into surrealism. When I saw The Straight Story, I gained a new appreciation for the filmmaker after seeing his versatility. With Miyazaki, it's been all fantasy prior to this, which also isn't my thing. I now have a newfound admiration for this director. For me, The Wind Rises is all about dreams, love, and moral dilemmas. The animation is excellent and it has a great musical score. It's a beautiful and emotional movie that I will probably appreciate more later on. The story gave me the feel of an old classic from 60 years ago. I have one more Miyazaki film left to see-Spirited Away.

Delighted to see you were so taken with it cricket. When I first watched and reviewed it upon cinema release I really liked it and rated it rating_3_5 ++. I revisited it for the first time a couple of weeks ago for the list and this time kind of loved it. Would bump it up to at least a rating_4 ++, possibly verging on 4.5 and perhaps becoming one of my favourite films. Just really funny, sweet, witty and creative with some terrific animation. As an old-school gamer I also get a real kick out of all the in-jokes. And I really quite love the Vanellope von Schweetz character. Usually I can't stand Sarah Silverman, and particularly her voice, but it was just a perfect fit for the character

Another of the mainstream animated films I'd recommend if you've not watched it yet is Kung Fu Panda which I'd say shares many of the same attributes.

I enjoyed the soundtrack very much, I'm also not a big fan of Keira's but she did her role just fine, and it seems like instead of olding Steve is getting younger, went to check out from what year the movie is just because of how young he looked.

Eitherway, it was enjoyable, playful and romantic, acting was fine so was the soundtrack.

On the downside the acting in some moments didn't reach its fully potential (the end) yet in general it gave me a good impression, and it succeed to make me emotional and very close to tearing up.

Gbgoodies, you didn't spoil the ending of Charlotte's Web for me. It was a friend many years ago that did it just during a casual conversation. No biggie at all, and in the movie, the fate of that certain character was practically telegraphed by the character.

Wild Strawberries (1957)

This is only my second Ingmar Bergman film and I must say that I enjoyed it immensely. For people who don't know, it involves the character of Dr. Isak Borg who is traveling by car to receive an honorary degree. Riding along with him are his daughter-in-law, Marianne, and a trio of youngsters that they pick up and befriend. There is also a quarreling couple that do not last for long on the trip. Borg is portrayed superbly by Victor Sjöström. His dialogue is somewhat minimal but he more than makes up for that with his wonderful face, which betrays everything he is feeling along the way. He ponders his life during the trip, with some things triggering memories both good and bad. Even in the face of receiving a reward, Isak wonders if his life was a failure. He dreams along the way, with Isak interacting with people from his past while he remains elderly. One dream has him being tested by a professor, who allows him to watch his wife and a lover in the past, which Isak actually did when he was young. The dreams are different in their structure all along the way, but go a long way in revealing Isak's character. Again, Sjöström is excellent in his role and he won several international awards at the time. Ingrid Thulin is fine as his daughter-in-law, Marianne and she is also quite beautiful. She has her own troubles which come out along the way. The rest of the cast is also quite good, but Sjöström and Thulin take the acting honors for me. Very near a classic in my opinion.

As expected from Loach, gritty, powerful, emotional and disturbing. Crissy Rock gives such an intense and raw performance as a mother fighting with social services over her children. Also, Ray Winstone plays a bit part here and it's possibly the most ferocious ive seen him.

The animation is beautiful and unique in style, the music is very climatic but... that's about it.

The voice acting is mediocre at best, and the story seems to only be there to create situations for the animators to throw colorful stuff at us.

Yes, there are some mysterious things going on, but they go by too fast. Yes, there are relationships but they aren't developed enough for the viewer to see how deep they are. And the ending is meaningless because the contents of the all-important book are not revealed so as far as I care, as a viewer, it was all about pretty drawings.

Perhaps if The Secret of Kells took a bit more time than 75 minutes, everything would make more sense and the movie would be deeper.

I fail to see why this is so highly acclaimed. It was an interesting experience but at the end of the day, it's all just visuals and that falls into the category of Avatar.

Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2005) 2

I liked the animals and the English accents, but overall this movie did nothing for me. It's certainly not bad; others will like it.

This was one of those that took me by surprise and I absolutely loved it. Sad to see it didn't click with you. :/

How The Grinch Stole Christmas (1966)

Such a charming little short. I haven't seen this before, and I was pleasantly surprised by it. Great rimes and narration to carry the witty telling of the Grinch. Lots of fun animation too, and it was clear to see this was Chuck Jones since I've seen his Tom & Jerry shorts and could defiantly see some Tom in the Grinch and some Jerry (and the rapid dog from that one episode) in the dog. :D

Gone with the Wind - 7.5/10

I have always had a complicated relationship with this film, which I intend to expand upon in a full review for my blog on Monday. This is simply a preliminary review of my initial thoughts toward it while I mentally expand it into something more comprehensive.

After just being vaguely disappointed with the film the first time that I saw it, this most recent viewing put into perspective how masterfully crafted, unnervingly perfectly casted and gorgeously rendered it really is. This is beyond its morally repugnant depiction of the institution of slavery as a whole, and black people in particular, and irredeemable vileness of its protagonists. In fact, none of those points actually diminished my enjoyment of the film and the last point actually augmented it.

Despite its myriad of issues - included a bloated run time (ironically due to its slavish devotion to the novel upon which it is based), a largely repetitive and narratively unnecessary second half and how the epic promise of the first half devolves into petty marital squabbles and melodrama - it is so close to being in my top ten films it's painful to think that it is otherwise. The scenes of Pandemonium at the end of the Civil War are some of the most exciting ever filmed. The cast is absolutely, unreservedly perfect in their roles and give some of the best performances that I have ever seen. The production values are immeasurably high and its first half is epic enough to give Metropolis and The Lord of the Rings runs for their money.

If Gone with the Wind would have ended with what I consider the true climax of the film - the fall of the Old South at the end of the Civil War - and largely foregone everything involving the post-War South, it would have easily made my top ten (for me, it's like a reverse 2001: A Space Odyssey, which would have also made the list if not for its profoundly boring first half). As it stands, however, it is my #2 ranked honorable mention for my overall favorites list (chasing the similarly impressive The Tree of Life)

The Triplets of Belleville (2003)

Most overrated movie I've seen in quite a while, in my opinion of course. The animation was very unique with a personal stamp, and that was pretty much the only reason I kept watching. The makers of this tried so hard to make an original story with lively characters and wicked and fun scenerios but failed miserably. It was boring, repetitive and weird in a bad way.

Third movie

Lost in Translation (2003)

With: Bill Murray, Scarlett Johansson

Finally a movie in which two people don't fall in love in a few hours and are commited to each other for life because of one night. I'm not a big fan of Scarlett's but she was cute in this film and Murray didn't disapoint.

It felt more real than most romantic movies, and I liked a lot the ending.

Sweet enjoyable romantic-comedy.

Does MM live Stateside? No one seems to believe me, but this stuff just isn't really shown that much elsewhere in the way it is over there.
