The Wolf of Snow Hollow (2020)

https://weliveentertainment.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/wolf-of-snow-hollow-banner-2-scaled.jpg

I really liked Jim Cummings' first film 'Thunder Road'. I just love the way he mixes comedy and drama. It's quirky and a tiny bit different to your straight up dramedy. This film isn't a horror film. It's a drama about families. The beast in the film IS Jim Cumming's character. He needs to move on from his demons, let his daughter go, recover from his addictions etc. Be a human again. The way it unfolds is very good.

Horror fans will hate it. That's not Cummings' fault.

I really like Thunder Road and I'm looking forward to this one a lot. Having seen his first film, I'm not expecting "horror", but I'm excited to see how a horror framework filters through his creative process.

Not seen for a while and still consider this to be one of Kubricks real truimphs. The great grimy background against the feral attitude of the Droogs is wonderfully realised against a brutal "modernist" landscape. The story flows from scene to scene and, while dated now, the acting is solid with the occasional burst of pure hilarity (P.R Deltoid and the Patrick Magee character questioning Alex about his meal after leaning what a little murderous ****e he really is!) .
Great performance from McDowell who really excels in this part.

Here is my backlog of films. Some have thoughts because I put them down at the time of watching. If anyone wants more thoughts or a discussion on any of the films feel free to reply!

The Homesman (Tommy Lee Jones, 2014) 3.5

Hiroshima Mon Amour (Alain Resnais, 1959) 5

David Bowie Is Dead (Mark Jenkin, 2018) [Short] 3

The Blood of a Poet (Jean Cocteau, 1932) 4

Eva (Joseph Losey, 1962) 3.5

The Testament of Orpehus (Jean Cocteau, 1960) 4/5

Night Moves (Kelly Reichardt, 20130 3.5

The Go-Between (Joseph Losey, 1971) 4

Le Corbeau (Henri-Georges Clouzot, 1953) 4.5

Woman in Chains (Henri-Georges Clouzot, 1968) 4.5

Quai des Orfèvres (Henri-Georges Clouzot, 1947) 3.5

La Bête humaine (Jean Renoir, 1938) 5

Beauty and the Beast (Jean Cocteau, René Clément, 1946) 4.5

Orpheus (Jean Cocteau, 1950) 5

Wings of Desire (Wim Wenders, 1987) 3.5

Umberto D. (Vittorio De Sica, 1952) 4

Fitzcarraldo (Werner Herzog, 1982) 3

A Quiet Place (John Krasinski, 2018) 1

Some of the best horror movies are based on how groups can survive by adapting their lifestyles around the strengths/weaknesses of their enemies (Dawn of the Dead, The Thing) but here the plot’s absurdities and characters’ stupidity becomes unbearable. Instead of using the unique premise to craft creative memorable cinematic sequences we get unnecessary exposition, empty and confused characters, and cliché scenes.

The Cat Returns (Hiroyuki Morita, 2002) 2.5

Far less ambitious than its Ghibli counterparts, the film has a strange fantasy plot exploring the world of cats with the Studio’s usual strong feminine message. Whilst it’s enjoyable enough, it lacks much complexity or emotional power. The result is an often bizarre combination of odd characters and terrible puns, with a mixture of humour for both kids and adults. A very minimal plot is stretched to 75 minutes.

The Wind Rises (Hayao Miyazaki, 2013) 3

Often beautiful to look at as we have come to expect from the animation of Miyazaki with some superb sequences but the film feels uneven overall. Jiro’s motivation and craftsmanship are assumed but are reduced to being demonstrated through expository dialogue. The political implications and exploration of human attitudes in Japan pre-WWII are glanced over briefly in favour of romance in a way that feels uncertain.

Christine (John Carpenter, 1983) 4

Unlike many Eighties films reminiscing over school life where oddball characters would find their purpose and be celebrated, Christine focuses on the misery and horror found in an environment shackling our bullied teen with frustrating expectations. Like Carrie, revenge is forthcoming as our lead character becomes consumed by his desires, given life through the stunning colours and compositions created by Carpenter.

When Harry Met Sally (Rob Reiner, 1989) 2.5

Although often since emulated, there is nothing particularly spectacular or cinematic about this comedy which relies largely on its witty dialogue and the delivery of its comic moments through its actors - who do manage to conjure up some enjoyable chemistry. Everything is else is where you would expect it to be, without much surprise or innovation as I have too often found to be the case for Reiner post Spinal Tap.

Mr. Klein (Joseph Losey, 1976) 4.5

The always assured Alain Delon becomes increasingly frustrated and frightened as his life becomes upended by false allegations of being a Jew. His performance, paired with the methodical compositions of Joseph Losey that linger with horror, create a feeling of impending doom, a terrifying nightmare closing in. Has unease and fear ever been captured so well? A damning indictment of moral cowardice and indifference.

The Hunt (Thomas Vinterberg, 2012) 1.5

An exercise in cinematic suffering. Misery piled upon more misery. Once the film’s anti-mob message becomes clear (almost immediately) there is no attempt to explore characters or actions further, along with no effort to convey the story in any cinematic way. The images, captured mainly in the style of a handheld camera, are largely bland and uninventive, matching the pessimistic numbness that can be seen on Mikkelsen’s face.

Whisky Galore (Alexander Mackendrick, 1949) 3

This classic British Ealing comedy might have one of their simplest plots but certainly has a lot of warmth to make up for it. In basing the story on the tale of washed-up cases of whisky off the shore of a remote Scottish island, the film is able to focus on the community spirit on the people living there, taking a look at the spirit of the Scottish people who see themselves fighting against the English home guard.

Midnight Special (Jeff Nichols, 2016) 3

In attempting to progress further than his previous films, Nichols chooses the Sci-Fi genre with all its conventions as the setting for this film but struggles to handle the usual tropes in a way that feels innovative or exciting on a certain level. Despite this, what still manages to shine through is his human warmth, once again showcasing his strong ability to capture relationships between adults and children.

Ema (Pablo Larraín, 2019) 0.5

Ema is a frustratingly vacuous film, lacking cohesion and meaning beyond the desire to provoke us with its gratuitous content. It's barely cohesive and has numerous contrived scenes that serve no purpose other than being visually striking. It seems to be too often the case that vibrant visuals and shocking content will now pass for a good film, rewarded simply for being ambitious and breaking away from the norm.

Nona. If They Soak Me, I'll Burn Them (Camila José Donoso, 2019) 1

Combining sharp images and crisp sound design, the film starts off with a playful introduction of Nona, a mysterious pyromaniac who recounts different experiences of her anarchistic life. Switching between wide-screen shots and more grainy film footage, instead of stitching these together into a rich cinematic tapestry the result feels disjointed and repetitive, a single idea unnecessarily stretched to a full film.

Extraction (Sam Hargrave, 2020) 1.5

The latter sections of both halves of the film feature some impressive stunt work and editing to put together some entertaining fight scenes. Unfortunately the rest of the film’s story is lazy, large sections of the plot don’t make sense and the villains are violent caricatures. The effort to give Chris Hemsworth’s character some sort of backstory to give the plot some emotional reasoning seems an afterthought.

The Whalebone Box (Andrew Kötting, 2019) 2.5

Blending together various images and sounds, fiction and non-fiction, the past with the present, the film plays around with structure without being able to convincingly convey anything profound or meaningful. More interesting is the blend of unique characters that are presented throughout the film, captured in unusual ways. The Whalebone Box works best as an affectionate celebration of a ragtag band of artists.

A Russian Youth (Alexander Zolotukhin, 2019) 1.5

Once again we have a modern filmmaker attempting to make something fresh and interesting by experimenting with different stylistic choices, here the decision to shoot WWI scenes on grainy film and also to combine the narrative with a modern orchestra. In doing the former, Zolotukhin forgoes any effort to build a cinematic language of his own through mise-en-scene and the latter strangely undercuts the film's drama.

Ponyo (Hayao Miyazaki, 2008) 3

Whilst enjoyable the film lacks the compelling emotional power of Miyazaki's best work My Neighbour Totoro, or the well-constructed commentary of Princess Mononoke, landing somewhere in the middle with a simple tale of a young boy who finds a goldfish who has transformed into a young girl. The hand-drawn visuals help give the film charm but the latter stages of the film seem unsure how to conclude the film's ideas.

A.K. (Chris Marker, 1985) 4

Chris Marker studies the work of Akira Kurosawa from a distance, watching as we would as a person filled with admiration and in awe of the man's methods. He captures the epic scale of the film's production and looks at the recurring themes and images throughout Kurosawa's work. He is an observer, sharing his insights on what he witnesses without trying to weave his own narrative. An advert for auteur theory.

Burden of Dreams (Les Blank, 1982) 3.5

A fascinating look at the troubled production of Fitzcarraldo, a film which does itself feel heavily flawed. Herzog's desire to complete the film seems to be nothing more than his own personal desire to experience the madness of such a journey, something he pretty much admits. It's amazing to see such commitment to a vision, and such unconventional filmmaking techniques, it's no surprise Robards and Jagger soon left.

An Autumn Afternoon (Yasujirō Ozu, 1962) 5

Ozu's final film is almost a remake of Late Spring, again exploring themes of cultural transition and family. This familiarity with the content through his exploration of it has given him a level of mastery and this film feels like a culmination of all his ideas. Ryū is incredible in his gentle lead role, the subtle emotional narratives are handled perfectly, and there are plenty of hilarious moments too. Incredible.

Borrowed Pasture (John Ormond, 1960) 4

This forgotten BBC made-for-TV film follows the lives of two post-war Polish immigrants on a Welsh farm. Narrated by Richard Burton, the film is incredibly cinematic, using its editing to demonstrate the relationship between the men and their environment, focussing on their hands, their belongings, the processes involved in their of labour, their faith and family, often evocative of Ford in how their lives are shown.

Vertical Shapes in a Horizontal Landscape (Mark Jenkin, 2018) [Short] 3

Repulsion (Roman Polanski, 1965) 4

The Green Ray (Éric Rohmer, 1986) 4.5

Pauline at the Beach (Éric Rohmer, 1983) 4.5

Belle de Jour (Luis Buñuel, 1967) 4

Fire/Pozar (David Lynch, 2015) [Short] 3.5

Little Big Man (Arthur Penn, 1970) 2.5

Thunder Road (Jim Cummings, 2018) 2.5

Monos (Alejandro Landes, 2019) 3

Dear Marianne (Mark Jenkin, 2016) [Short] 3

Passion (Brian De Palma, 2012) 4

Suspicion (Alfred Hitchcock, 1941) 3.5

Carlito's Way (Brian De Palma, 1993) 4.5

Broken Flowers (Jim Jarmusch, 2005) 4.5

The Limits of Control (Jim Jarmusch, 2009) 4.5

Angel Face (Otto Preminger, 1953) 4

Hereditary (Ari Aster, 2018) 2

Venom (Ruben Fleischer, 2018) 0.5

Femme Fatale (Brian De Palma, 2002) 3.5

Miller's Crossing (Coen Brothers, 1990) [Rewatch] 5

Inside Llewyn Davis (Coen Brothers, 2013) [Rewatch] 4.5

Mission: Impossible (Brian De Palma, 1996) 3.5

The Mule (Clint Eastwood, 2018) 3.5

Mission: Impossible II (John Woo, 2000) 1

Have to write a comment here about how it's unbelievable that this was written by Robert Towne. Has to be one of the most sexist films that I have seen in the way the characters talk about/treat women.

Mission: Impossible III (J.J. Abrams, 2006) 2

Interesting drama about a couples relationship that seems idyllic but is plagued by the wifes mental health issues. Even saying more would likely ruin a good/pivotal part of the film.

Solid enough.

I’ve been meaning to watch this for ages, and as it is, I found it rather disappointing. Part of it is the fact it’s just not that engrossing, but a bigger problem for me was that Chia Chi seemed to have absolutely no motivation to continue being a spy. I watched this with a friend, and neither of us could wrap our heads around why she keeps going. She’s not that patriotic to begin with and is very reluctant to join the rest of the group in their political activism, or whatever you’d call it. As the film progresses, she only seems less into it. From that point of view, the film didn’t work for me at all, but I concede it’s reasonably well-made. Much preferred Brokeback Mountain, though.

I'm a sucker for 'time warp' movies so I had to watch this one. Hmm, not bad. Interesting premise, nicely developed plot, and a pretty decent execution. Yes, it's one of those films where plot structure overrides atmosphere/cinematic language - not that it's bad per se but in this case personally I missed that auteurish element. While pleasantly accessible, it was more tame and mainstream than I would have preferred. The second half felt a bit lacking (too much romantic melodrama for my taste, with a mandatory gotcha twist at the end) but overall, worth a watch.

Here is my backlog of films. Some have thoughts because I put them down at the time of watching. If anyone wants more thoughts or a discussion on any of the films feel free to reply!

I saw most of those movies you listed, but I'll pick a few favorites.

Wings of Desire (Wim Wenders, 1987) rating_3_5
Good movie for the 80s. Paris, Texas is even better, also Wenders, but my favorite might be "Alice in the Cities", and the sequels are pretty good... I think I gave this a 7.5/10
Umberto D. (Vittorio De Sica, 1952) rating_4
One of my favorites ever.. Influenced my favorite movie ever, "Harry and Tonto" (which probably influenced "The Straight Story")... My brother (who has barely seen any movies) actually watched this and reminded me of a hilarious part.. Umberto needs change, so he buys that glass, and nonchalantly throws it to the ground.

Mr. Klein (Joseph Losey, 1976) rating_4_5
Good one, gave it the same rating, especially compared to the movie made by Polanski that same year.

A.K. (Chris Marker, 1985) rating_4
Never saw this, but I loved "Joli Mai" - one of my favorite docs.

Burden of Dreams (Les Blank, 1982) rating_3_5
I liked this more than the movie.

An Autumn Afternoon (Yasujirō Ozu, 1962) rating_5
My favorite Ozu, despite so many of his movies being so similar, even the same actors playing the same kind of characters.

Lisa and David (1962)

I loved this movie very much.. I also liked Perry's second movie, "Ladybug, Ladybug", especially considering the Cuban Missile Crisis was happening as it was filmed, but I even loved that it was told from the perspective of children.

This film really does have a most unbelievable chemistry between the two leads. I also quite like A Bigger Splash, but I still think CMBYN is Guadagnino’s best. A shame the Suspiria remake was rubbish.

Thunder Road was a real mixed bag for me but will still give this one a chance.

Yeah I agree with you, in that I prefer Paris, Texas. I haven't seen Alice in the Cities yet although it looks good. I really enjoyed The American Friend which is a fun movie with lots of great actors in it.

Yeah they all seem similar to each other, it's amazing the emotions De Sica can evoke with the simplest of plots. I need to watch more Italian films.

Mr. Klein (Joseph Losey, 1976) rating_4_5
Good one, gave it the same rating, especially compared to the movie made by Polanski that same year.

Glad to see another fan. As you can see I watched a load of Losey movies and really enjoyed them all. I think this is his best I have seen. I love these times of films. Have you seen his remake of M? I've heard that it's actually really good so want to see that next.

A.K. (Chris Marker, 1985) rating_4
Never saw this, but I loved "Joli Mai" - one of my favorite docs.

Burden of Dreams (Les Blank, 1982) rating_3_5
I liked this more than the movie.

Two great docs, I agree with you about Burden of Dreams being better than the film, which to me succeeds more as an idea but the actual execution doesn't really feel that great or compelling, I find it lacks its own "language" or identity, and it's more just a collection of shots from them actually carrying out the events in the film.

An Autumn Afternoon (Yasujirō Ozu, 1962) rating_5
My favorite Ozu, despite so many of his movies being so similar, even the same actors playing the same kind of characters.

I've only seen three Ozu films, each one I've loved. I think this is my favourite so far too, although I thought that after Late Spring. Can't wait to get to the rest.

Bliss (2019)

Obvious comparisons to Gaspar Noe were a warm welcome here. The film kicks off with a warning about flashing imagery and its certainly well warranted. This is a loud, psychedelic and violent film that no doubt is best watched both under the influence and in the dark. I only did one unfortunately but it didn't stop me loving it. This is one to avoid if not a fan of violence/gore/drug/sex/hallucinogenics/metal.

Dawn of the Dead (1978) - 4.5

Though Snyder's remake is quite good, it doesn't capture the strengths of this film with the same skill and precision. For one, the consumerism angle is greatly reduced in Snyder's film as, while both films feature zombies and a shopping mall, Romero's film takes this theme a handful of iterations further by giving the zombies fragments of their prior personalities, displaying them as mindless drones stuck in a never ending loop of interacting with the material goods in the mall as the days go by, the same thing the human survivors resort to in order to pass their time. While I liked the ensemble cast in Snyder's remake, they can't hold a candle to the four main characters in this film. Romero displays a great deal of sympathy for them as they're displayed as flawed characters who occasionally make mistakes for various reasons, but are still capable of tenderness and nobility. This made me care about their fates on a much deeper level than those in Snyder's remake. Other things I liked about this film included its depiction of an apocalypse in motion which extended to the occasional TV broadcasts and the highlight of a frenetically paced apartment raid in the opening which gave a disturbing portrait of society breaking down, Ken Foree's empathetic, layered performance, and the strong melancholy air which persists throughout this film. Overall, this is one of the best zombie films I've seen. Snyder's remake, by comparison, is a good way to spend the afternoon and maybe a little more.

Made in 1971, same year as a movie this reminded me of (Straw Dogs)... A newcomer surrounded by Bogans who love to drink, shoot animals, psychological (I guess).. I don't think many would like this, though. Not very "accessible", especially with the commercials (didn't know of this particular 3rd party Concast app), but I kept watching, which is more than I can say about a majority of movies I've tried to watch this year... I've actually had this on my to-watch list.... I spent 9 months in Australia, including 5 weeks in Bamawm (another place no Aussie has ever heard of) and I was stuck at the farm/hostel except to get food once a week.

Yeah they all seem similar to each other, it's amazing the emotions De Sica can evoke with the simplest of plots. I need to watch more Italian films.
.
I gave "The American Friend" a 7/10.. Alice in the Cities, Wrong Turn, Kings of the Road (8,7,6/10, which is not surprising).

I HIGHLY recommend the documentary "Vittorio D".. It's on Amazon Prime. But I really recommend Italian movies in general, which for me, is the country that made the best movies, per.. Obviously, there are many American movies, and many great ones, but there's something about Italian movies and the culture.. Neo-realism, and what came after. The last great one I saw was from 1980, "La Terrazza", probably the best movie I've seen this year (9/10).. Visconti is probably my 2nd favorite director, there's only one or two of his I haven't seen. I'd recommend La Tera Trema, Bellissima, Rocco and His Brothers. My favorite Italian movie is actually "La Strada", but I ceased being a fan after "La Dolce Vita", which I gave a 7.5/10 - I always feel different (sometimes indifferent) when I see it. Maybe it's the debauchery? Maybe it's because I know what he was capable of with La Strada, Nights of Cabiria, i vitteloni

"Fist in Pocket" by Bellocchio is a realistic horror that I highly recommend. "Il Sorpasso" is a very fun and great movie. I could go on and on, but if you name some Italian movies you did like, I might be able to give you more and more accurate recommendations.

I never saw the re-make of "M", but the original German is probably my favorite thriller/mystery.. I did like Losey's "The Servant" and "Secret Ceremony", despite it being a little flawed. Have you seen it? Elizabeth Taylor and Robert Mitchum are in this unique movie. For some reason, it reminds me of "The Night Digger", which I liked less the second time seeing it, but its still good/different.

I also think if you liked "The Servant" that you might like "The Caretaker" (The Guest) with Robert Shaw, who I like (although I don't like Alan Bates).

Queen Marie of Romania (2019) - 6/10. The story they were trying to tell was a pretty intriguing one. But somehow the writing was a bit run-of-the-mill biopic type. The acting was fine. The piece of history is also fine. I saw it as 7.8 on IMDB, so gave it a try. But that is really stretching it. It's decent at best. Boring at worst! Woodrow Wilson was again shown as a prick!

'Eternal Beauty' (2010)
Dir.: Craig Roberts

https://i.imgur.com/pvE6s0U.gif

Started off a bit overdone and overacted but ended up a very sweet, touching portrayal of dealing with schizophrenia and disfunctional family. Sally Hawkins and David Thewlis are terrific as normal and the DoP Kit Fraser (Possum, Under the Shadow) has to take credit for giving the viewer some lovely lighting and imaginative shots. Roberts' 'Submarine' was a nice film, but he's ramped it up a bit here - talented young man.

Well worth 95 minutes of your time.

Wake in Fright is one of the best, er, non-horror terrifying movies I saw. It's a hard watch and I don't know if I can watch it again, but I found it to be a really effective and shocking portrayal of toxic masculinity. The kangaroo scene is hard to watch, but it's part of the film's visceral power and, regardless of what you think of the morality of it, it's a really powerful sequence. Glad you also liked it.

Daleks' Invasion Earth 2150 A.D. (Gordon Flemyng, 1966) 2+ 5/10

I watched Daleks' Invasion Earth 2150 A.D. on TCM last night, and it was only okay, (about 2 to 2-1/2 popcorn boxes is pretty accurate IMO), but I thought it was still a little bit better than the Dr. Who movie that aired just before it. (I think it was called Dr. Who and the Daleks.)

I've only seen a few episodes of the TV show "Dr. Who", so I can't really compare the movies to the TV show, but the movies seemed kind of childish compared to the few TV episodes that I've seen.

Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (Brad Bird, 2011) 3

A big step up from the last film, Bird handles the direction with assured confidence that gives the film its own unique style which feels very cohesive and makes for an enjoyable and thrilling experience. There's a synthesis between the performances (mainly Cruise and his sunts), the cinematography from Elswit and the editing. It all works together, with a slightly more humourous script too.

Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (Christopher McQuarrie, 2015) 3.5

McQuarrie carries on the good work from the last film and gives us plenty more of the good stuff. The action sequences in this film are for me the best of the series. Watching all six films in a row makes you realise just how laughable some of the plots are, especially when the same story is almost recycled six times, but when it's all filmed so well you don't really mind. The introduction of Rebecca Ferguson really helps in taking the film up a notch too, the balance feels spot on here with a mixture of characters old and new.

Mission: Impossible - Fallout (Christopher McQuarrie, 2018) 3

Another very strong film with many of the same strong qualities as the last film. My minor complaints would be that it does seem slightly overlong, and the attempts to bring some sort of emotional core with the reintroduction of his wife into the story is really, really weak.

The Godfather: Part III (Francis Ford Coppola, 1990) 1.5

I love the first two films but had put this off for ages and now I kind of wish I had never watched it. I knew it wasn't meant to be as strong as the first two but I was really disappointed by it. Almost everything about it seems off. Sofia Coppola gets a lot of stick and her performance is weak but the problems are much larger than that. I'd go as far as saying that the film is full of poor performances with the exception of Andy Garcia. Even Pacino isn't enjoyable on screen, and the script completely butchers his character. George Hamilton's casting is strange, the dialogue is so exposition-heavy, the plot is just the first film recycled with a bit of the second thrown in. It's as if a teenager watched the first two and had a go at writing a third. Some of the scenes and shots are really bizarre, the stroke, the shootout with the old man grabbing the coat. The editing of the film feels poor, some scenes (especially in the first half) move at a lightning pace which is really uncomfortable when coupled with the poor line delivery from everyone, then the second half of the film drags on forever.

I loved the series from the 1960s, although they were about a group team who took assignments. Lately I've been winding my way back through the films since they were mentioned a week or two ago. I agree with your ratings. MI-2 was pretty bad, then they started to pick back up.

So far we've watched the first four. Will tackle the most recent two soon. Then of course #7 will supposedly be out next month.

The plots are practically immaterial. The action, the stunts, and the clever gizmos are the real draw-- plus Cruise's irrepressible personality and smile. All this within a PG-13 rating. What's not to like??

The Blackcoat's Daughter (2017) - 4

This is a hard film to write about without spoiling, because a lot of the film's joy comes from the way its plot unfolds and reveals more insight about its backstory as it goes on, adding several dimensions of interesting themes to itself and changing the way you initially viewed certain characters in the process. With that being said though, I liked this film much more when I rewatched it. While I liked it well enough with my first viewing, I found it to be somewhat dull at times. With my second viewing, however, in addition to realizing the significance of several shots I didn't think much of during my first viewing, I found it to be a thematically rich and moody film whose ideas really resonated with me. Joan's scenes with Bill and Linda stuck out the most, though I also found found Rose and Kat interesting. The sound design is also excellent, not solely due to how creepy certain sounds are (Kat's phone call or the heater), but how these sounds would often culminate with disturbing visuals that turned these moments into sensually pleasing sequences. While you may have to be patient with this film to get the full benefit of it, the rewards you get for doing so are definitely worth the effort.

I revisited it recently and, though it takes its sweet time to get going (although, this bothered me less than it did the first time I saw it), I think it did a really good job at establishing tension/atmosphere in the caves and developing the relationship/rivalry with Sarah and Juno as it went along. Quickie ratings on the last few films I've seen...

Evil Dead II (1987) I know I'll probably be hated here after this, but I just don't jive with Raimi's "horror comedy" vibe. Grade: 2

The Phantom Carriage (1921) Creepy, eery, and well ahead of its time. Grade: 3.5

Frankenweenie (2012) Saw it with the kids. Cute and charming, with a lot of neat homages to the horror genre. Grade: 3

Funny Games (1997) Disturbing, very well acted and very well shot. Grade: 4

Throne of Blood (1957) Why did I wait so long for this? Amazing film, gorgeously shot and very well acted. Grade: 4.5

The Cured (2017) Had very high expectations for this after reading the premise and, even though it is still a competent and well done effort, can't help but feel a bit disappointed about it. Grade: 3

The Barn (2016) Cheap and schlocky low budget horror is, well, cheap and schlocky. Still a bit fun. Grade: 2.5

Evil Dead II (1987) I know I'll probably be hated here after this, but I just don't jive with Raimi's "horror comedy" vibe. Grade: 2

I revisited that one last year. I greatly prefer the original Evil Dead (it's in the running for my top 5 horror films), but I liked the first half quite a lot as its slapstick gags made it feel like a bizarre Looney Tunes episode. It's a really unique horror film and it's going to be hard to top it. However, once the other characters arrive to the cabin in the second half, I think this charm is largely absent and I was less invested n the film at that point (minus the terrific ending), but I enjoyed what came before quite a lot.

The Phantom Carriage (1921) Creepy, eery, and well ahead of its time. Grade: 3.5

That's a personal favorite of mine. From what I read, it influenced the iconic "Here's Johnny!" scene in The Shining. Which soundtrack did you listen to it with? The classical or modern one.

Throne of Blood (1957) Why did I wait so long for this? Amazing film, gorgeously shot and very well acted. Grade: 4.5

I didn't give this film nearly enough credit when I first watched it, but I now think it's amazing. Kurosawa shot the hell out of it so much that I didn't care that he sacrificed Shakespeare's prose or took some liberties with the original text. Kurosawa had his own ambitions and nailed it.

Trust me, I wanted to like this, and the fact that I kept going to his "horror" films, even though I felt exactly the same (or worse!) for Drag Me to Hell and The Evil Dead should serve as evidence. But like I said, it seems his style doesn't jive with me, but I know I'm in the minority.

Yeah, the influence in the "axe" scene is pretty obvious. I saw the one that's on The Criterion Channel. I'm pretty sure it was a classical score.

I'm not very familiar with Shakespeare's original story, so maybe that's why I wasn't that bothered by Kurosawa's liberties. But even though I liked the story a lot, the direction was on another level. The framing and the use of perspective in his shots was amazing.

If you know what you're into, you might enjoy it. There is a clear and distinctive visual style that evokes the 80s (the film is set in the 80s, and the director made an effort to make the image look like it was shot in the 80s), so if you can get past the shaky dialogue and performances, you might be OK. The film is inoffensive enough to at least be somewhat enjoyable.

Eternal Beauty (2019)

I was attracted to the film by the two principal actors, Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water) and David Thewlis (Fargo season 3). Both came through in spades. Another standout was Penelope Wilton (Isobel Crawley in Downton Abbey).

It's tricky to produce a film which features characters with severe mental illness. The writers tend to over write, and the actors tend to over act, which sometimes results in a type of a parody that never jells. In this case the performances by the inestimable Hawkins and Thewlis were adept at keeping up the natural feel, which may have disguised some weak writing.

Pictures that are helmed by the same writer and director sometimes run the risk of mediocre continuity. Since the director is directing his own script, the danger is that there is no second party to beware of cohesion or stability problems in the production. Those issues are not overwhelming in this picture, but one might say that those principles kept Eternal Beauty as a nicely done film rather than being a really good film.

Hawkins plays a woman who is shockingly left at the wedding altar, which results in her eventual slide into schizophrenia. She is supported by the state, but is something of an embarrassment to her family, including 3 sisters. She presently meets Thewlis, another with mental problems, and they are attracted to each other. Thewlis moves into her government apartment, but one of the sisters soon brings their relationship to a close in a deeply underhanded way. The film then chugs along to a rather uneventful ending.

Another treacherous feature of these type films --and I'm reminded of The Snake Pit, The Three Faces of Eve, David and Lisa, and Repulsion-- is that the stories are easy to write into, but oftentimes difficult to write out of. There are only a few outcomes available when basing a story on a character with severe mental illness. In this case the denouement was digestible, but one has the impression that the entire film could have been fine tuned. Still, the acting alone was worth the price of admission.

Doc's rating: 6/10

I think I've seen it twice, though I can't remember if the second time I watched the whole movie over or just the second half.

Also, I recommended this movie to my family, who had asked for something "Scary but not too intense" and I guess I'd just blanked out a lot of the violence?

Anyway, later they were kind of mad and I went "Wait, was there really that much violence in it?" and my brother's girlfriend goes "Oh, yeah. She killed 'em. She killed all the c*nts".

For whatever reason, the way she said it just makes me laugh every time I think about it.

Though recently I'm back on the recommendations train with successful recommendations of Don't Look Now and the original Fright Night.

Probably my favorite Adam Sandler movie, as the charm and humor still ages well with me. Even though I know some of the scenes so well (fight with Bob Barker for example), I still laugh so hard.

Dolls, 1987

I can't count this one for the horror challenge, as it's a rewatch.

A little girl and her horrible father and step-mother break down in the middle of a storm and end up in the spooky house of an elderly couple. They are soon joined by a child-like man and two very brash "punk" girls. As the night and the storm wears on, strange things begin to happen involving the couple's large collection of dolls.

The movie is pretty cheesy and acted, let's say, in a way that suggests that restraint was not a priority. There are many times that you can almost see the stage direction from the script as characters *exchange a significant look* or *heave a big sigh*.

But the cheesiness of the film actually ends up working in its favor. Not only because it lends the movie a winking vibe, but because when some serious or disturbing stuff happens, it lands all the harder. There are multiple sequences that shock with their brutality or even just their disturbing imagery.

I don't think that you can really dock the film for goofiness, as that's clearly its intended tone. Even the occasionally awkward acting from the young lead feels like it feeds into the intended vibe. All around a great little horror movie.

Both the performances are pitch-perfect and the story very human even against the harsh outlook of the story and environment. Really enjoyed this.

The movie of the night, an old one. This is a movie with lineage. Based on the novel, Who Goes There, it was a 1951 classic, The Thing From Another World, and also a 2005 prequel. Sometime soon another version, from a longer version of the original story will be undertaken. Numerous other stories, derivative movies and games are based on the story.

This one, however, is one of John Carpenter's classics. It's frigidly cold in the Antarctic, the long night is coming, the Thing, an extraterrestrial shape shifter, is taking over bodies in the remote outpost, everybody suspects everybody, buildings are burning and it's getting even colder. It will be 100 below before "morning", which is months away.

This flick is truly excellent and ranks very high on almost all movie rankings, not just for horror movies. It's grim, dark, scary, fatalistic and has a slow burn that keeps adding tension. It was from the golden age of pre-digital, wax-melt FX. It has several scenes that nearly duplicate the 1951 version, including the black-and-white look. You can freeze to death, burn up in a building or get taken by The Thing. There's no Plan B with a better outcome.

I had never heard of this until someone here mentioned it recently. It's a historical revenge tale from the director of The Babadook. You can see that it's not from the most upper echelon of directors or actors, but they're both good enough and I loved the content. It's about 135 minutes long and I was engrossed for it's entirety. I was surprised at just how brutal the movie is. The main bad guy is a complete sicko and there were several scenes that made me say oh damn. My wife likes Last House on the Left and The Devil's Rejects, and she may not have made it through without sweet payback on the horizon. It's also just plain sad at times.

That's a mighty fine nutshell

The review said something to the effect of "not for the faint of heart". I'm fine with certain kinds of violence, but from what I can infer this movie (maybe) has

sexual violence
race-based violence
baby-killing violence

none of which I do very well with as a viewer. Still, I've heard enough positives that I'll probably watch it at some point when I'm feeling emotionally sturdy.

My advice is to not underestimate the "brutal" part of the equation. Sheesh.

I underestimate nothing. And at this point, what I'm imagining might even be worse than what's actually in the film.

A small town's volunteer fire department throws a celebration in honor of their former leader's 87th birthday. The whole town is invited and there's food and plenty of drink along with a raffle and a beauty pageant. The wheel's come off right from the get go. Items from the raffle immediately start disappearing and the organizing committee can't seem to find enough "pretty" girls to compete in the pageant. When released this was at first welcomed at home and even praised but the Communist party soon realized that it was a pointed condemnation of their rule. Surprisingly, it wasn't banned and turned out to be a big hit in Czechoslovak cinemas. 80/100

I think that the strength of the film is that it works on both the literal and allegorical level. If you knew nothing about the politics and had no idea that it was a satire, you could still enjoy the comedy. Thinking about it as a political critique adds depth, but the literal story can stand on its own.

Crazed Fruit, 1956

A young man, Haruji, joins his older brother, Natsuhisa, at a seaside vacation spot. The two come from a wealthy family, and they spend their time with a male clique of wealthy borderline sociopathic young men who party and regard the local women with a mix of lust and disdain. Haruji is mocked for not being a player, until he strikes up a relationship with the beautiful and mysterious Eri. Natsuhisa becomes intrigued by Eri, and soon finds a way to blackmail her into a sexual relationship.

Something that I thought this film portrayed incredibly well is the contempt and anger that people who are immature and insecure feel toward the gender(s) to which they are attracted. When you like someone, it gives that someone power over you. Both brothers, despite one being the "innocent" and the other being the playboy, feel this anger during the film, and it is ugly. Especially in the final confrontation between the three characters.

I was very intrigued by the character of Eri. She is at once someone who seems to be capable of control and "managing" the men in her life, and at the same time someone who has very little autonomy. It's hard to explain this without a moderate spoiler, but here goes:

It seemed to me that each man in her life represented a piece of what she would want. Her husband represents stability. Natsuhisa represents sexual satisfaction. And Haruji represents a genuine affection/love. She tries to cobble together the life that she wants, but the results puts her in the center of danger.

The film looks very good, especially the sequences shot on or near the water. The water itself serves as an interesting echo and backdrop to the sexual tension between Eri and the brothers.

Overall this was a really compelling drama with a memorable finale. The way that it plays with the concept of a love triangle is really interesting.

I thought it was a significant improvement from The Babadook (which I didn't enjoy that much, really). It's a little too "white man bad" at times, but as a whole, I liked it too. A god mix of brutality and sadness and beautiful 4:3 cinematography (I absolutely agree with that ratio choice).

I really didn't care for The Babadook but I did really enjoy The Nightingale. Maybe due to it being a historical piece vs horror movie that got a lot of hype.

When horror films get a lot of hype for being different, it draws me away from it.

Admittedly, I remember feeling kind of worn down from the film after I finished it. After the first 30 minutes or so, it did tone down a decent bit with its violence, but it's not the kind of film which I have any interest in revisiting. However, though I'm more of a The Babadook person, I do think it's pretty solid. Certainly not an easy watch though.

Emotion, 1966

This was a fantasy/horror short from Nobuhiko Obayashi (he of Hausu fame).

Experimental short films can often be the butt of jokes. And there are some truly unengaging and random ones out there. But it is very fun to watch an experimental film that has a strong vision behind it (even if that vision is a pseudo-Dracula walking through a forest of bubbles).

Emotion is the perfect name for this film. I couldn't even say exactly how, but the sequence of the images and how they were presented certainly did evoke emotions in me. There was a sense of humor to the film, but also an off-kilter vibe to the whole thing that works well with the horror story.

The Social Dilemma - 8.2/10

Sure, it's one of the scarier films of the season, but not very surprising for anyone who's been paying attention for the past decade. And for those that haven't been, well, they might not be interested in willing themselves into awareness now anyway. Still, it's a clean and neat (just shy of 90 minutes) summation of a chorus of guilty consciences behind the design of something short of ethical and more or less persuasive. One flaw of the film is by focusing on the big handful of tech corps, it sidesteps how more traditional media corps have integrated and adapted the algorithms of divisive engagement. They aren't victims of 'new media', but complicit in its worst aspects, impulses and priorities. But hopefully we'll learn. Hm. I guess we should want to. I should have started a cult when I had the chance.

The Farewell - 8.6/10

Packs a bigger punch in our covid times, considering how I haven't been able to see my dear grandmother for months, and we slyly lie to each other about how soon we will see each other again. I may not, in fact, since she's 87. But we smile about it.

Beautiful film. A real companion piece to Francis Lee's debut feature 'God's Own Country'. It's as much about loss as it is love. Saoirse Ronan is good but Kate Winslet is absolutely sensational as the repressed fossil collector slowly withering away on the Dorset coast. A very tender, emotional ride.

There is some ambiguity towards the end but it's poised for the viewer to fill in some of the gaps. That's 2 very fine movies out of 2 for Francis Lee now.

I will out myself and say that I've never seen a Dario Argento film never-mind the original to this piece. Maybe I should. This was a functional chiller with a good plot. The acting was a bit distant but that kinda added to the "normal/workaday" feeling of the lives of the main players. The ballet scenes juxtaposed with the "side-effects" are really well done. I hear that Argento is a bit of an auteur in the horror and giallo genres so I may have seen some of his stuff unwittingly, any recommendations appreciated.

The Unholy Three - 1925 Lon Chaney silent feature where he plays a decidedly bent ventriloquist named Echo who, when the film opens, is teamed up with pickpocket Rosie O'Grady (Mae Busch). He comes up with the idea of expanding his criminal enterprise by bringing in strongman Hercules (Victor McLaglen) and midget Tweedledee (Harry Earles). Together they form The Unholy Three and, using a pet shop as a front, start casing well to do targets. Given the era it is a melodrama of course but it's a well made one with a strong lead performance by Chaney that illustrates why he was such a huge star at the time. The ending is especially effective and melancholy. 85/100

Monster Problems (2020)
aka Love and Monsters
2
A PG-13 adventure-horror-comedy that loans from things like Fallout, I Am Legend, Shaun of the Dead and a bunch of old B-movies with monstrous animals due to radiation or poisons. As a comedy, it isn't exactly my cup of tea coffee but at least it was watchable without any desire to self-harm. Still, way too predictable, formulaic and without an edge to actually be funny.

Dust Devil - 4 (108 minute director's cut)

Dust Devil is a stylish, mystical and unique serial killer tale for how it ponders if supernatural forces are to blame for the evils of the world. While other serial killer movies do this - Seven and Fallen come to mind - it is refreshing to see one from a non-Judeo-Christian and non-American perspective for a change. Robert John Burke is chilling as the killer and a likely depiction of how southern African natives imagine the devil. The actor retains his American accent, which is an inspired choice for how it makes him all the more otherwordly. The opening scene, which reveals the killer's M.O., expertly sets the tone, made me clench my armrests each time he appeared afterwards and best of all terrified me.

The movie also deserves credit for giving the native characters their own lives and voices instead of just being there to point the leads in the right direction. To be fair, Joe, a sangoma and the most prominent believer does the latter for Mukurob, but the movie gives him three dimensions and that is not all he is there to do. Actually, while director Richard Stanley and not Joe may believe more than anyone, he wisely leaves it up to the audience whether the killer is really pulling the strings of fate or if there are really any strings at all. Stanley is not the best actor's director - too many performances are flat and robotic - and even though I enjoyed the poetic narration and dialogue, some of it is delivered in the same manner and thus leads to tone-disrupting unintentional comedy. The movie's surreal and mystical properties still shine through, though, and besides, how many other serial killer movies fit that description?

Spike Lee joint where a group of Vietnam Vets get back together to retrace their steps during the war and reclaim/honour their inspirational and socially aware troop leader who was killed...... and make a bit of fools gold. Loaded with racial connotations, timeline news footage (in the intro only), and a great soundtrack. Post Trauma Stress Disorder makes a rightfully up front issue in the tale of the former GIs. However, this just pans out OK with me in watchabiity.

Shot well but the humerous parts were clunky and the earnest/serious parts suffered because of that.

10 RILLINGTON PLACE (1971)
https://diaryofamoviemaniac.files.wordpress.com/2015/02/rellington.jpg

Stumbled upon this while looking for "a film with the number 10" for my monthly challenge, and thought it was pretty darn good. Surprised I hadn't heard about it before. Based on a true story, Richard Attenborough plays John Christie, a serial killer that targets a young couple (John Hurt and Judy Geeson) that rents an apartment from him. Hurt and Geeson are pretty good, but Attenborough was great, chillingly calm... I also knew nothing about the story, so it caught me by surprise with the way things went down. If anything, the film doesn't delve that much into the psyche of Christie, but it's still extremely tense.

The Current War (2017)

https://damienmolony.files.wordpress.com/2019/06/currentwarposter4.jpg

I had mixed feeling watching this movie.
I was attracted to it because it's a period piece and a history movie (although I've haven't researched how accurate it is).

Possible Spoilers ahead...

Nicely filmed: the sets & costumes seemed accurate.

As a movie, it seemed difficult to follow especially in the beginning - it seemed to move too fast... like they were trying to jam too many facts and figures into its runtime and not spending enough time explaining all the things they were referring to.

The music created a palpable feeling of tension, but it seemed overused - the whole movie felt tense, and it was a relief when the music (that had the feeling of a countdown for a bomb going off) would change to something more relaxing.

The movie's topic didn't seem to require this very regular feeling of suspense and tension. I thought the tension created for this film would have fit a horror movie or thriller better as it was well done, but didn't seem necessary to be used so much for this subject.

I always thought the rivalry was between Edison and Tesla, but this film seems to say it was between Edison and Westinghouse.

I thought the casting of Nicholas Hoult (who I like) as Tesla seemed off. Not that they were striving for likenesses, but Tesla had a unique look and was known for his handsomeness - it seemed a different actor would have fit him better. The character of Tesla (and his contributions) overall seemed underplayed.

Although cinematically accomplished and has aspects to be admired, I'm giving this movie lower marks than I'd like as it was too fast paced to be informative & not a comfortable watch.

What a pleasant surprise this turned out to be. As a fan of baseball, I enjoyed the hell out of this. Regardless of the liberties the film takes with the true story, it was a lot of fun. The Unknown - Another 1927 Lon Chaney silent. This time he's a member of a circus going by Alonzo the Armless Wonder. He does trick shooting and knife throwing with his feet and is obsessed with Nanon, the circus owner's daughter. There's a reveal early on and one of those, "Why not sleep on it and decide in the morning?" plot twists. 85/100Only from the mind of Tod Browning would we get such a deliciously odd & cool story. I gave this a similar score 4/5.

Probably the best thing about the film is the rapid (MAJOR SPOILERS)

HER: Oh, MEN!! WITH THEIR HORRIBLE ARMS!

HIM: "Man, this chick really hates arms!"

HIM: "I will cut off my arms!"

HIM: "Hey, babe, look at me with no--"

HER: "So anyway I love arms now. Mmm mm mm can't get enough!"Right? Talk about impulse control issues.

I Married A Witch - My overall impression was that this was a weird little film. An oddly mild 1942 screwball comedy with mismatched couple Fredric March and Veronica Lake. March was miscast and is much too old for her but she's great, displaying a charm and a tomboyish energy that's perfect for the role. I also loved her work in the two other films I've seen her in, This Gun for Hire and Sullivan's Travels. It's part of the Criterion collection and is highly rated by critics. 80/100

'Poetry' (2010)
Dir.: Lee Chang Dong

https://i.imgur.com/XnkKT3m.gif

Lee Chang Dong films are normally poetic anyway, but this takes it to a whole new level. It's another of those wonderful South Korean films that tackles the enormity of life, memory, family and everything in between. It also expresses so many layers that explore things like depression and matriarchy.

Lee Chang Dong is a brilliant filmmaker. Much of the dialogue is like a poem in itself. We follow a grandma with dementia struggling to come to terms with a family issue and her new found hobby of poetry. She wants to make amends for other people's mistakes. The struggle to write poetry here perhaps being a metaphor for trying to make sense of a crappy world where crappy things happen that aren't even your fault. The final 30 minutes is a wonderful pay off. Beautiful film.

Much more realistic than I expected, showing group of people dealing with substance abuse. Has a nice road trip feel that I enjoy in a movie. Good film this and Dillon rightfully well lauded for it.

Twice Told Tales - An anthology from 1963 with all three stories based on Nathaniel Hawthorne works and starring Vincent Price. The first is Dr. Heidegger's Experiment which costars Sebastian Cabot. The two play old friends who stumble on a fountain of youth of sorts. It's slow moving and kind of stodgy but the same can be said about all three vignettes. The second is Rappaccini's Daughter, where Price plays an overprotective father. Over the top, psychotically overprotective. The third is The House of the Seven Gables in which Price plays Gerald Pyncheon who moves his new bride into his family's ancestral home. He has hidden motives of course. The project as a whole is clearly low budget and each one of these have their share of unintentional humor. Not one of Prices best. 50/100

Well, thanks to those of you who brought this up. This was effectively creepy. To be honest, I didn't "feel it" as the film progressed, at least not a lot. But after the film ended, and I kept on thinking about it, damn, it got under my skin something fierce. Pretty well acted, neatly shot, great use of sound and ambiance. Looking forward to a rewatch, which is usually a good sign.

The Last Wave (1977)
3
It's not as good as Picnic at Hanging Rock, but it's easy to see that both are directed by the same person. The first hour or so is really good, but towards the end, it loses lots of its steam. The soundtrack is great, and it creates a disturbing feel to the film. I can't really pinpoint what goes wrong in the latter parts of the film, and partly because of that, I'm not 100% sure of the rating either (there's a chance I'll up it by half at some point).

I really love The Last Wave. While I can agree that most of the memorable imagery comes in the first half, there's something about the sense in the last half that things are going downhill and if there was a point that anything could be done about it, that time has passed. The main character progresses from an active protagonist to something more akin to a witness, even if he doesn't realize it until the end.

hypernormalisation

I thought the trailer looked dreadful and was worried about how the film could possibly be anywhere near as funny without the unknown documentary setup that made the first so successful in exposing horrendous opinions/actions from real people. A bit more confident now that it will at least be decent, as people and critics seem to like it. Reading about the Rudy Giuliani stuff it at least seems he was able to pull off some similar "tricks" as the first. I was initially thinking when I saw the trailer that I wish he would have just done another season of Who Is America?.

Borat Subsequent Moviefilm - 3

I was intrigued at how Cohen would pull this off after the first film being a big hit. I guess Who is America was his trial run???? The inclusion of his daughter brought new laughs and I was impressed with how she kept composure during some scenes. The film takes aim at how women are treated, how people ignore the virus, republicans, pedos, etc. While the film does not have any real laugh out loud moments like the first (naked hotel chase) it does have a few shockers (father/daughter dance/ Giuliani).

A passable sequel that felt more focused on story than real life encounters.

They address early on how he's so recognisable that he has to adopt disguises to make the film (though he still reverts to his regular appearance often enough), but I think it's more a matter of how the kind of content that seemed so shocking and horrendous in 2006 now seems all too familiar in 2020 so it's more a matter of an audience potentially having grown numb to how awful Americans can be in the past decade or so (like I said, hypernormalisation). Less a sense of "what the hell am I watching" than "yeah, this tracks".

I actually think it's a movie made precisely for those of us suffering from zombie overkill. It's almost like our revenge zombie-movie antidote. One of the highlights of watching it in a theater was the rather volatile reception it got from those who seemed to be Walking Dead fans. Then in the parking lot, they got into their big new trucks.

The Proud Ones (1956), it was an OK western.Yellow Sky was one of those pleasant surprises where you run across a movie you never knew existed. Great cast with Peck of course, but Baxter and Widmark and John Russell and Harry Morgan also contributed. I like how they didn't romanticize the outlaws. They were all venal and greedy but everyone took it in stride. Nothing personal but we gotta kill you now.

And Whit Bissell was everywhere in those days. I'd be watching a movie or TV show and he'd pop up. It got to be a running joke with me. And then I researched him and found out his full name is Whitner Nutting Bissell. He's the epitome of one those hard working, dependable and largely overlooked character actors that never get their due. I know we could come up with dozens of names if we tried.

Lively telling of the legend and fact of Ned Kelly with Heath Ledger playing the main man. Ledger plays it with an inner gravitas that really comes over in the scenes. 1st time watch and would watch again...obviously a romanticised version of pretty desperate events but it had a "big film" feel whilst staying to the topic. Geoffrey Rush handles his part excellently as hard nosed "coppa" tasked with taking these Aussie-Irish upstarts down.

A Colt Is My Passport - This is a 1967 Japanese noir from Nikkatsu studios, A pair of hit men are hired by one Yakuza gang to assassinate the leader of a rival clan. Once the job is done the two go on the run and spend the rest of the movie trying to get clear of the two gang's machinations. This is B&W and steeped in noir. It moves a little slow but there aren't many, if any, stretches where you get to feeling impatient. The pair of killers are the weary and sober veteran Kamimura (Joe Shishido) and his younger acolyte Shiozaki (Jerry Fujio). There's a muted, cool atmosphere throughout and then the last few minutes just kind of explode into action. 90/100

We Go On, 2016 (C)

A movie from the makers of Yellowbrickroad, if anyone has seen that. It's a movie about a guy that wants to know if there's life after death, and finds ghosts, because this is a horror movie. The movie isn't terribly unpleasant to watch, but the silliness of just having people silently open their mouths like they're yelling as the only scare the movie ever does, and always a jump scare, gets dumb dangerously fast.
