This classic Czech take on the adventures of Baron Munchausen gets a lot of praise, and I can see why, but in all honesty I wasn't particularly enamored by it. Definitely the best thing about it was the visuals, which were stunningly beautiful and unique - the amount of creative effort that went into making this film must have been staggering. But as a movie it didn't really blow me away. I mean, it was charming and whimsical but not much else, and I wasn't really absorbed by the story all that much. So yeah, liked it but didn't love it, and I think I enjoyed Zeman's other film,Vynález zkázy, a bit more. I'd still give it a 4/5 just for the unique visual style alone.

Stir of Echoes (1999) 4/10
Got through the film in three sittings and it was hard work. It got better around the time of the police funeral, with a bit more intrigue, and there's something worthy in the flashforwards and flashbacks and how they're resolved; the "feathers" bit is nice. The obvious The Shining influence, where Tom is digging, seemed sloppy. The way the film was done it was like it should have been centered around teenagers rather than the adults – very strange. At least Shirley Manson got a mention :).

The Big Lebowski - 1998

Sometimes there is a movie, well, is the movie for it's time and place. That was not the case with The Big Lebowski, that was largely disregard in the United States and later loved in Europe; they got it. They got the glorification of a slacker, of someone without a place to go, like the tumbleweed rolling and rolling at the direction the wind determines, someone that was not afraid of not being busy, and also not afraid to say The Eagles suck. They do. Someone that didn't strive to be a big Lebowski, he was alright just being a dude. A movie that is now being more and more attractive to a generation tired of competition, tired of the pressure to be a achiever, they even created a religion out of it, Dudeism, cool. It's one of those movies I watch when I'm felling down to remind myself that life goes on man, and, just keep on abiding, don't take things seriously.

Suddenly, Last Summer (1959, Joseph L. Mankiewicz)
3
Decent mystery drama with an impressive cast, well directed and acted (Elizabeth Taylor as Catherine Holly was particularly riveting) but also a bit too verbose and dramatically overwrought at times (imo). The premise was interesting, but the way the central mystery played out didn't pack as much punch as I hoped, and I didn't care for that climactic 'flashback' scene at the end.

Quite the mish-mash of a movie. Finished it, but almost bailed out. Amusing twist that finally dawned on me one hour in.
One of the problems for me is that Meryl Streep had the lead rôle in the credits, but it is not a Streep movie. She just played her part among others.

The legendary almost-porn tentacle-rape horror OVA from the late 1980s. Visually impressive but the writing was not that good, but in terms of style this was really a major innovation. In fact, the whole stereotype of anime = tentacle rape comes from this OVA. So it was nice to watch the original source material for the meme. Really over the top stuff. 8/10
Actually, the tentacle thing has a historical reason: instead of saying its a genital they said it was a "tentacle" so they could show it (as Japanese censorship laws are very strict, even in porn movies genitals are blocked from view, but not in here!).

The Nightingale (2018)
The second feature film by Jennifer Kent of The Babadook fame is quite a mixed bag for me. I think it's a major improvement from her debut but it still has lots of issues that prevent it from being great.
The Nightingale is brutal story set in early 19th century Tasmania. It kinda reminds me of Brimstone (especially early on) in it's focus on the cruelties afflicted to its protagonist and her family. Eventually it starts to focus too much on modern politics and being woke becomes more and more important. It never ruins the film but it surely hurts it quite a bit.
I really liked the 4:3 ratio used in the film. Especially the early parts of the film benefit a lot from that choice. Leading actress was great while others suffered a bit from too caricature writing (evil white patriarchy and noble savages among other cliches). Editing is kinda wonky (no sense of time or chase, some funky horse stuff, etc.) and the film was tad too long (2h 16min).
Despite the issues I have to say that I liked The Nightingale. It just could have been much better.
3.5
Bugsy Malone (1976)
This one is truly confusing. How could a good director like Alan Parker make a film like this? Why were all the songs dubbed by adults? How odd it must have been to see Jodie Foster in a film like this after Taxi Driver? What's the point of the film in general?
For the most part acting is bad (yes, I know they're kids but it's still bad). Script consists of almost random scenes and (terribly dubbed) songs add nothing. Ending is among the stupidest I've seen. Sets and costumes are pretty good though and the pedal-driven cars are great.
Terrible movie.

The Laundromat (2019)
Directed by Steven Soderbergh, this dark comedy tries to do too many things. Its mission seems to be skewering the corporate practice of avoiding taxes and creating shell companies, but the uneven and sometimes silly comedy styles used tend to detract from whatever the director’s position purports to be.
Armed with good acting from popular stars Gary Oldman, Antonio Banderas, Meryl Streep, along with cameo appearances by James Cromwell and Sharon Stone, the film lurches from scene to scene in a semi-confused mess. It is difficult to explain the complexities of international corporate financing and banking to laymen. To do it with off-beat comedy makes it that much more difficult. Breaking the fourth wall acted as a narrator, but its frequent use became annoying.
The film was not without laughs, but it tried too hard to be quirky. As an expose it would be much better done as a documentary, without the corn.

Pretty sure this was the first episode I saw. The Zardoz reference is a laugh, and Claudia Black is really good in her role (and with Virginia Hey nice for Farscape fans). No One Saw a Thing (2019)
Finished up the 6 part No One Saw a Thing the other night. First of all, I love that type of documentary. True crime mystery is fascinating to consider, although a bit creepy, and oftentimes shocking.
"No One" was well done, the problem is that the concept was only weak to moderate in its editorial position: that once a town had participated in vigilante justice, it ended up fostering further crime and isolation which caused the town to depress and deteriorate.
The initial 1981 Ken Rex McElroy vigilante killing was captivating, had been widely covered in the U.S. and foreign media, and featured in several documentaries. But the next incident that was offered as proof of the town's collective degeneration didn't happen until 20 years after the original incident. It, along with several to follow, was obviously the result of methamphetamine manufacture and use, which is a scourge in all areas that it exists. Skidmore was not unique.
I agree 100% with what the townspeople did. IMO all natural law is best at the local level. The 7 or 8 local citizens who formed the bulk of the interviews became interesting characters in their own right. But the premise of the embellished documentary was a little thin. I'm sure it sounded good on paper, but by the time the editing took place they likely had to strain to stretch the series into six 45 minute episodes.
Still, I'd recommend the series, because it really holds one's interest. I thought that the photography was exceptional, and the interviews themselves were nicely put together.Available on Sundance TV and various streaming services.

Great recommendation this. Charting the adventures of Russian rock bands Kino and Zoopark and the underground rock scene in Leningrad in the 80s. I really enjoyed the musical interlude type scenes, and though I thought they were a gimmick at first, I ended up loving them and wanting more. It's a beautifully shot film that is at times funny, beautiful, quirky, whimsical, romantic and poignant. The tone of the film wavers but doesn't distract. It uses the semi biographical nature as a backdrop to the changes in the USSR. New regimes replacing old ones etc.I went in blind to this movie, and came out stunned. Agree with your rating - maybe even higher. One of the best of the year. Exceptional.

1st re-watch...This respectable 2009 remake of the 1980 film did not quite hold up as well on its re-watch, but it provides more than passable entertainment, tweaking the original film just enough to establish its legitimacy as a remake. Highlights for me were Naturi Naughton's stunning rendition of "Out Here On My Own" (the only song used from the original film) and the fabulous Megan Mullally belting out "You Took Advantage of Me."

What a classic. Edward James Olmos created Jaime Escalante, one of the most genuine, interesting characters I've ever seen, so funny and entertaining, amazingly funny actually, great sense of humor, and at the same time that vibe of what could be a very frightening, dangerous man.
I am *El Cyclone,* from... Bolivia. One-man gang. This classroom is *my* domain. Don't give me no gas, or I'll jump on your face and tattoo your chromosomes... tough guys don't do math, tough guys deep fry chicken for a living...
I'd bet this character was the inspiration to Alejandro by Benicio del Toro in the movie Sicario. Those who haven't watched this film, give it a try. Orale?

Not in the class of The Devil's Rejects but still a good bit of fun. My wife laughed all the way through and I think she liked it even more than I did. Captain Spaulding is only in it a couple of minutes and there is no replacing him. It was sad to see knowing Sid Haig was on his last legs.

Shadows: Eleven O'Clock (TV, 1978) 7.5/10
I liked this and I think the two-year break had a positive effect. The new title music is very good, along with a fresh, mysterious title sequence that better reflects the programme.
Another improvement is that the interplay between the characters is a lot more natural than in many of the preceding stories. It's very easy to believe you're watching a father and daughter, and they're very well acted. This being largely a two-hander, an investigation of sorts and involving the sound of a clock, my mind wandered back to the classic 2002 Doctor Who audio The Chimes of Midnight. The writer Rob Shearman based it on Sapphire and Steel and Upstairs Downstairs and I think this Shadows episode achieves a similar haunting effect.

<sigh> Why can't Eggers get a budget, basically The Lighthouse is an Ingmar Bergman film it's not as good looking as it could be, it's not as tightly paced as it should be, and it doesn't quite live up to the bar the Witch set. This is however a four star film and likely one of the most inspired horror films of the year.
I don't know if the film is going to make the cut for Oscars this year but Robert Pattison is amazing he really is the standout in the film. Defoe on the other hand is just merely good in a film that should be a versus type film of two stars we get a supporting performance from Defoe which takes away most of the third act impact.

I think it was practically straight to DVD with a limited release as far as I can tell. The Devil's Rejects was a throwback and is far superior. Watch that one first, unless you want to try The House of 1000 Corpses which is actually the first of the series but is quite different.

Rewatch.
I knew I always liked this film but didn't know I liked it this much. It has obvious themes of being different, alone and of loneliness but also seems ahead of it's time dealing with mob culture, mass hysteria, virtue signalling and a whole load of other negative traits that are seen online and in various forms today. The plot is almost Shakespearean. It's a damning indictment of society and morals. Not forgetting Danny Elfman's score and the amazing set design - I'm tempted to say it's Burton's masterpiece.

Blue Gender: The Warrior (2002) - First Time on DVD rating_4
For a compilation movie composed of both re-used and new animation with an alternate ending, this one is a lot better than it should be. It has a far better plot structure and continuity than Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death and Rebirth, that's for sure. In the final minutes, it becomes clear that they weren't sure what to do with it and some plot holes show up, but overall it's pretty good - I can think of worse ways I could spend the last hours of my birthday, that's for sure. It piqued my interest and made me want to check out the series it's an alternate telling of. It's also a fun and exciting movie - lots of action - and the gore hounds will find a good deal of R-rated violence here. Funimation has also, as is expected from them by now, provided a excellent English dub with Eric Vale and Laura Bailey standing out as Yuji Kaido, who wakes up after 22 years to find that savage aliens known as the Blue have overrun the Earth, and Marlene Angel, the soldier under strict orders to take Yuji to "Second Earth" with her. There's also Dr. Ritsuko Akagi (and Hana and Monkey D. Luffy) herself Colleen Clinkenbeard, Goku himself Sean Schemmel, and Vegeta (and Roronoa Zoro and All Might) himself Chris Sabat in smaller roles and the dub script is completely natural.
Ah — Sweeney Todd / The Flying Squad. I understand now :D;). Yeah, I feel like I've seen Russell Hunter playing one of Regan's snouts.
I loved The Professionals, and that's on all the time too. On Blu-ray as well now apparently.

Well, I don't really know if I should rate this film without taking in the consideration the previews, but, that's alright, this one made me want to watch the others. A rating based on the snooze factor, if not for the Sheri Moon's over the place craziness, it would be better, the acting is also alright and the plot is not that bad, but I'll forget it by tomorrow. I liked the intention of the beginning of the film, trying to impersonate the old school b-horror films, then it changed, for worse, I was hoping for something more Natural Born Killers, but the dialogue is pure nonsensical craziness, something that is the point of the author all along, I presume.

Not as good as the earlier Will Hay film Boys Will Be Boys but still entertaining. One thing that I really loved here was the Hell-inspired set design for the nightclub. Various demonic gargoyles and, even more subtle, the shape of flames on the main door. Lilli Palmer is first seen in this sequence and she's very funny. Her character reminded me a lot of Helena Bonham-Carter's appearance in Rik Mayall Presents.

Bakhtia, Siberia, population around 300. Werner Herzog and Dmitry Vasyukov managed to do in an hour and half what The Last Alaskans couldn't do in one thousand four hundred and seventy six hours. They showed it all, the overall difficulties, there mindsets, there philosophies, there families and saudade, the portuguese word without translation that means missing your love ones. They also showed the more vulnerable and exploited. They showed us the economics, the inflation the fur hunters, the trappers have to endure, seeing the price of furs decreasing and the price of utilities increasing. Four seasons, different tasks, but always busy, doing the same thing there ancestors did. I don't know if they are happy people like the title says, but I'm sure they don't have the free time, like we do, to experience sadness. I don't have to talk about cinematography, is beautiful like expected.

They were trying to do a chapter in the life of these two men (the last chapter), but frankly I would have liked to have seen more. I would have liked to have seen their early careers and how they met and maybe even some of their childhoods. Then the movie could have been more well-rounded at 2 hours instead of a little over an hour and a half.
They did an excellent job re-creating some of Stan and Ollie's classic skits. Now I want to watch the originals.

I should probably bump this rating a little higher, but it's simply not as good as the original. The jokes are almost on par, the story is only a small step back, however it would only be good as a rewatch in pieces for me. It was rather gimmicky, yet the gimmicks were usually funny and playful while they lasted.

Your Name (2016) - Rewatch on Blu-ray 5
I can't believe this outdated Insignia plasma - you can see the shape of the tube through the screen - with the screwed up sound, even trying to ruin Your Name. Still, though, it's Your Name, it's the best the film's looked outside of the theater - even better than the HD version on FunimationNow, and this is one Shinkai fan who's glad to finally own a copy.
Heilstätten (2018)
A German found footage horrors that copies Grave Encounters quite heavily. It tries to be meta with its Youtubers being aware of the horror cliches but it really doesn't help as it practically replicates every single one of them. The twist in the end isn't nearly as bad as some reviews seem to think. There are couple of nice scenes too but as a whole it's standard boring found footage movie (if that's your thing you may want to check it out, otherwise skipping is better option).

Parasite (2019)
I found this to be a bit over-rated I think the hype didn't necessarily match the quality of the film. The less said about the film the better in the sense that it's basically a genre mashup. It's very Hitchcockian but it needed to be more Hitchcockian for it to work as a classic in my opinion.

This movie has a lot of acclaim; 5 Oscar nominations, the top 100 cheers list, #4 on AFI's courtroom drama list, etc. Frankly I just didn't see it. Paul Newman has had much better roles and Sidney Lumet has many other movies that are better. My wife and I both thought it was decent at best and we are very partial towards Boston based movies.

Yeah that's one of those things that's very common The Verdict. It gets a lot better on repeat viewings so much of the impact of the story and performances are looks and inferences. Everytime I watch The Verdict it gets a little bit higher on my list of his works.

The Vampire and the Ballerina (1960)
Visually quite impressive vampire flick that falls flat due to terrible script and wooden acting. It copies Nosferatu and Vampyr adding some jazz dance and sexual innuendo (and those trees swinging in the wind remind me of some Japanese B&W horror I can't name at the moment). If only the writing was on the same level as cinematography. Only the looks raise this above bad.

Primal: The ever so busy Nicolas Cage plays Frank Walsh, a big game hunter who has nabbed his biggest one yet, a rare white jaguar that he plans to sell to the highest bidder. On a ship to go head to Puerto Rico, he joins a US government task force, who have taken in a terrorist named Loffler, who is set to be extradited. However, Loffler fakes a seizure, escapes on the ship and to ensure he will be staying out of the cage, unleashes Walsh's jaguar along with some monkeys and snakes.
Fun popcorn film that has Cage not going too OTT , and I have always been a fan of Kevin Durand since Waking Tall. As Loffler, he brings this bit of a charm to the role. He's not totally evil as it seems. There are a few sweet turns and twists along the way, but its purpose is met. If you like just some good not too serious fun, this is one action flick then worth looking at.

Wolf Children (2012) - Rewatch on Blu-ray rating_4_5
So the messed up TV tried to mess with Wolf Children, too. It was a bit difficult to hear the actors at times - again, because of how this TV is, especially when someone was whispering, but since I have a good memory, I had a pretty good handle on what was being said. Of course, Funimation's excellent English dub wasn't as subdued as that of A Silent Voice. Colleen Clinkenbeard's turn as Hana, the woman who falls in love with a wolfman, bears his children, and ends up having to raise them on her own, managed to come through clearly at every turn, and surprisingly, this is also the case with David Matranga as said wolfman. Also, someone would have to try pretty hard to subdue the late Jerry Russell's - whose memory the dub is dedicated to - gruff but likable turn as Grandpa Nirasaki. The Blu-ray is also the best the film's looked outside of the theater and I couldn't help noticing things I didn't notice the first time around, like the fact that Yumi from Hosoda's previous film Summer Wars shows up in two different scenes. Man, can't wait to move in somewhere so I can watch it on a TV of my own that's not screwed up like the one in this room - bet it would sound amazing on that one.

Terminator SJW is a watchable but insulting film. Pretty much anytime a female is on screen she's either a lead, or in position of authority. If a guy is on screen he's a victim or an ahole...it's distracting. The good news is Linda Hamilton is very good in this...she actually has a personality she's not just a female who exists to tell other people what to do (like the other two female leads). It would be nice if they called Grace a cyborg and not "advanced". Miller does a great job with the action set pieces I was worried the film would look cheap and the money just went to Arnie, Linda, and Cameron. The film has two horrible moments of CGI/makeup usage (someone needs to be old another needs to be young they both fail).
Actually thinking about the film they made numerous mistakes...instead of trying to copy Wonder Woman or Ghost Busters. They should have looked at Kong Skull Island and had a large body count of disposable characters. I mean what was the reason that only one person needs to come back from the future to save the lead.

Yeah, if only there was a movie where the men weren't victims or a-holes. Someday...
But seriously, I figure that there's some limitation that means only one individual can come through at a time like issues with power or the sphere being so small. In any case, I don't think disposable characters are the answer (especially not with Kong: Skull Island as a reference point since even the non-disposable characters in that were limited on account of having to share screen-time with the disposable ones).

Danger Close (Kriv Stenders, 2019)
One of the most important military events in Australian history was the 1966 Battle of Long Tan, in which an outnumbered Australian/New Zealand faction led by Major Harry Smith took on the North Vietnamese in the jungles of Long Tan. It is rare in recent years to see a good war epic with historical accuracy and this one is well done for an indie film. Travis Fimmel is excellent in the role of the embittered Smith with great support by Luke Bracey as Sgt. Bob Buick and the great Daniel Webber as Pvt. Large, who throughout the mission finds himself constantly at odds with his superior, Smith. Very tense and the battle scenes are well done, using weapons and choppers that were actually used in the original battle. This is definitely one war film worth checking out.

After nuclear fallout has rendered most of the population infertile those who are still able to "do it" on are considered extremely valuable. Sam Hell (Rowdy Roddy) is still very fertile. Well, early in the film the Govt. captures Sam, drains him of his precious bodily fluids, decide he's now expendable and send him to Frogtown. Frogtown is, obviously, a colony of mutant frog people created from the fallout. The folks in Frogtown have captured several fertile women and the humans want them back. Sam's mission, should he choose to accept it, is to save the captured women. This movie is a bit bonkers. If your into bad sci/fi, b-movies give it a whirl. The only thing that bugged me a bit is the main Heroine at times looks a bit too much like a young Junior from the Sopranos (gotta ditch them glasses)

Cemetery Without Crosses (1969)
Quite bleak spaghetti western. I usually prefer more direct revenge but this works OK in the end. Quite heavy Leone influences (which isn't bad) and pretty nice soundtrack as well. Not in the same league with Leone or The Great Silence but above average none the less.

Hell of a good Netflix documentary. British identical twins, one of whom loses his memory after an accident at age 18. Finds out 30+ years later from his twin that their mother was a pedophile who pimped them out to friends & relatives when they were between 6 & 14 years old.

Is that Almodovar's first?
Yeah, was disappointed in that one. Just didn't grab me, had issues with the pacing. Shame.
WHIDTDT isn't Almodovar's first, is that what you mean? Cant remember if you like him? I never really was a fan before, think took me a while to grasp his humour but really starting to like him.

I really like Almodovar. 'Julieta' and 'The Skin I Live In' are very good - but 'Talk to Her' is absolutely amazing. Has a crazy dreamlike sequence in the middle of it.

Iderno, it's fairly straightforward if you ask me
A Conspiracy of Faith (2016)
A Nordic Noir from Denmark. Apparently third film in a series (one of the characters looks/feels so familiar that I must have seen at least one of the older films even though I don't remember any specifics). This one's about serial killer who's victims are children.
It's on the bleaker end of Nordic Noir and most characters are feeling miserable for various reasons. There's nothing very innovative in this film but it's a solid take on a killer reliving his childhood trauma. Some character writing is little lazy and ending could have been darker but mostly I liked it.

The Bloodstained Shadow (1978)
A giallo that severely rips off Fulci's Don't Torture a Duckling. It looks and sounds good but the story and pacing are rather weak. Murderer is quite easy to guess but the film does really poor job of selling it. Kinda OK if you're a giallo fan but otherwise watch Fulci's film instead.

Hell of a good Netflix documentary. British identical twins, one of whom loses his memory after an accident at age 18. Finds out 30+ years later from his twin that their mother was a pedophile who pimped them out to friends & relatives when they were between 6 & 14 years old.
Based on your description it sounds like the most manipulative documentary ever made.

It was boring and lacked any depth of any kind.. I get that it was school news.. its a school movie and wow, school has changed since the 90's.. that news channel must take an entire budget.. production values through the roof... not counting the cost of hiring teenagers to act as unnatural as possible whilst hosting it

The Death of Stalin (2017)
A mix of historical drama and political satire. Great cast and good performances. Doesn't really know what it wants to be though and ends up being too silly for proper history depiction but not crazy enough to completely work as a comedy. Still worth a watch and at times quite funny.

The Wild Bunch (1969)
In regards to my previous snippet about The Tin Star this one surely doesn't lack cynicism and nihilism. In Peckinpah's world human life has very little value and violence is everywhere. There's nostalgia for the old days when man's word was worth something but even such pride is quickly drowning on greed and blood.
Stylistically The Wild Bunch is somewhere between traditional American westerns and Leone with Peckinpah's trademark violence. It feels little too long and little too interested on some meaningless details (like how Pike got the scar in his leg). A big plus for the starting credits (Peckinpah is quite a master with these) and the use of children. Not as good as Leone's best but still very formidable western.

Motherless Brooklyn
So this might be my most conflicted film I've seen in a while. This is very similar to Inherent Vice that came out years ago which is a period piece mystery with this massive cast that feels like they just do a little bit for their credit role. It fails as a mystery and as an epic but it succeeds as a period piece drama.
Parts of this film are really good but Norton just indulges himself to much in the lead role. He's basically a PI in a firm but he suffer tourettes and OCD. Many times in the film we're told about events that would have been better to have been seen. Also the body count kinda sucks so a lot of threads are just hanging around.

The Shed (Frank Sabatella, 2019)
A throwback to 80's monster films like The Pit, where a bullied teen discovers a vampire-like creature in his tool shed. He doesn't want anything to do with the monster after he kills the teen's abusive grandfather but his buddy, who has also been bullied, has other plans. Some nice twists and turns throughout the film and adds a tinge of comedy when it comes to our hero Stan and his crush, Rosie. The young cast (Jay Jay Warren, Sofia Happonen, Cody Kostro) did a really good job with veterans Timothy Bottoms, Siobhan Fallon Hogan, and Frank Whaley (as the creature himself) really elevating the youngsters' performances.

Mike Wallace Is Here (2019)
This is a mostly absorbing 90 minutes that goes by quickly. I think the producers/writers were pretty pleased that they'd been able to showcase some of Wallace's emotional side, and it is illuminating to learn a little about the man behind the sword and shield.
Wallace evidently debuted his attack style interview methods in the 1950s on the old Night Beat TV show in NYC then again on ABC with Mike Wallace Interview. Later during the long run of 60 Minutes on CBS, the inquisition type interview was honed to a fine art, which unfortunately has lead to today's "gotcha" type interviews masquerading as journalism that those in the industry have apparently come to believe is absolutely necessary.
Wallace quickly became an icon of the "tough interview". Looking back it's surprising that many of the interviewee's subjected themselves to that type of exposure. Perhaps it's akin to a defendant wanting to get on the witness stand to make the jury see their side of the story, only to learn too late that the prosecutor is very adept at making the witness look like a guilty fool.
Nowadays it's common to see questions along the lines of, "Do you still beat your wife?" That type of shoddy journalism is a direct descendant of Wallace's work. But in the early days it was fresh, fascinating and fun to see him skewer previously hidden subjects. Wallace was seemingly a fearless interrogator, with black shark-like eyes who always seemed to be looking for the checkmate. The documentary is able to examine both sides of the man and provide a testament to his legacy.
Doc's rating: 7/10
Soldier Blue (1970)
Another western that pushed the limits of movie violence. Its bloodshed is more bloody than The Wild Bunch but it can't match Peckinpah's brutal cynicism and misanthropy. Instead it leaves a preachy impression and paints the world too black and white.
Soldier Blue is rather an odd film. It's like a romantic comedy with massacres at both ends. There's not much chemistry between the leads (mostly because the soldier is such a wuss). The ending could have been effective but now the film doesn't build into it; all we get is a glance of unadulterated evil shown from the safety of the moral high ground.
Maybe it'll grow on me but for now...

I have been in a movie slump where no matter how hard I try, I just can't get in the mood to watch a movie (or anything else). I saw this 25 years ago, and the only part I remembered was Shirley MacLaine's butt being grabbed by the older whore. I know a movie is boring when I start re-checking things online. I liked Empire of the Sun, more or less, because I view it as a critic to the American war crime (atomic bomb), which I know it probably wasn't, but I like to believe it was. I also think The Terminal is enjoyable, I mean, I like the music, I had it on my mobile phone ringtone for two years. There are also movies I don't really like and I'm afraid to say because people might think it's political. I hated, hated Munich. Schindler's List was not as great as people paint it, I liked Ralph Fiennes character and his performance overall, and the cinematography in the burials scene, that's about it. I'm not trying to say I have a refine taste, far from it, but I always thought Spielberg is overrated as f*ck.
Fabulous
