Minnie and Moskotwitz (Cassavetes) - 4/10 - I think I only liked this film a little more 8 years ago was because you are curious what happens to next. Seymour is one of the most unlikeable characters I've ever seen. So aggressive, just a jerk, weird and with the most unlikely girl. I think Cassavetes has a manic depressive episode every 5 seconds, as the films goes nuts every other few seconds, and it seems like most of his films do, but they are different, so I'll watched "Faces" and maybe "Shadows" soon.

Goodfellas (1990)
Even though I've only heard good reviews of Goodfellas, I've been reluctant to see it because it just didn't seem like my type of movie, but I'm glad that I watched it. It's not likely to make my favorites list, but I liked it a lot more than I thought I would.
At almost 2-1/2 hours, it's longer than most movies, but it moves along at a nice steady pace, and it never gets boring. As expected, it has quite a bit of violence, but it's not too graphic, which made it easier to focus on the story.
The movie has great performances by the entire cast. I've never been a big fan of Ray Liotta, (who coincidentally is celebrating a birthday today), but I thought he was very good in this movie.

I have never liked Ray Liotta in any of the movies I have seen him in, (which is about 9) except this one, in which I thought he was excellent, which I attribute to Scorsese's direction.

Speaking of the vice grip, one of the funniest lines ever is when Joe Pesci finally gets an answer..
Nicky Santoro (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000582/): Give me the fuc*in' name!
Tony Dogs (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0161893/): Ch-Charlie M.
Nicky Santoro (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000582/): Charlie M?
Tony Dogs (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0161893/): Charlie M.
Nicky Santoro (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000582/): Charlie M? You made me pop your fuc&in' eye out of your head to protect that piece of ****? Charlie M? You dumb motherfu*&er!
The funny part is the "M" part... It's not even his full surname, and Pesci's reaction.. He's probably the funniest guy on the screen ever.

The Moon-Spinners (1964)
After the success of the James Bond films, everybody did a spy thriller, even Disney. Shot on location on the island of Crete, there's beautiful scenery. The film looks great...but who want's to see a Disney film where people are shot and Hayley Mills is fighting for her life. After the story ends it goes on for another 30 minutes and just gets goofy. In one scene an 18 year old Hayley Mills gets drunk, I was surprised Uncle Walt allowed that scene. Hayley Mills and Crete are worth watching.

I'm surprised Uncle Walt allowed that poster to go out...it gives the impression that Hayley Mills has a Jayne Mansfield-size bosom, which she did not. I used to crush on Hayley anyway, but given that Uncle Walt had enough influence to make his star, Annette Funicello, wear one-piece, non-revealing swimsuits in her "Beach" movies made by another studio, it somewhat amazes me that he let his own studio release the "Hayley Hooter" poster. :)

Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome // 1985
It feels like yesterday when I just praised director George Miller for making a superior sequel with Mad Max 2, and using the bigger budget to the advantage of the movie, expanding and recreating his universe without taking away from the overall experience, atmosphere, characters or anything of that matter. Then along came the second sequel...
People were complaining that this received a PG-13, and while I agree it's a bad move taking a R-rated genre down a notch, it could still be done respectfully (personally I'm thinking Die Hard 4). But Mr. Miller didn't just "water down" the franchise, removed a few blood sprays here and there or something like that. No, the dear Miller went ahead and made a STRAIGHT UP family movie with Gibson in the role of "Uncle Max"! Someone do something!
The way it started out was far from great, it felt like he did exactly the opposite of the last sequel; creating a movie with too much flower power and "hey, look at me" bullsh*t. It felt like a retarded costume party, not Mad Max. But still, there were somehow a feel of it still being a MM-film. That is, until the movie turned into a metaphor for Peter Pan and all the "lost children" stumbled into the movie. The worse danger and most tense moment in the film is Uncle Max trying to save some kids out of the dangerous quick sand of the desert. Yay.
Thank you, George Miller... 1.5
- Fury Road looks awesome though, please don't f*ck that one up!

The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956) - 3
Even if I left aside my knowledge that it was Hitchcock remaking one of his older films, this would still feel a bit too much like Hitchcock-by-numbers with the variations being a little lacking compared to what he'd pull on subsequent films. The premise is interesting enough on its own merit, but it does feel like it's dragged out at times and there's not all that much in the way of suspense for this one.
Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987, John Hughes)
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/d/d6/Planes_trains_and_automobiles.jpg/220px-Planes_trains_and_automobiles.jpg
This is a work I've seen numerous times, and it never fails to put a smile on my face. It's simply a beautifully humanistic slice of filmmaking. It's hilarious, it's touching, it's endlessly rewatchable, it's wonderfully directed, and it features two outstanding performances by Martin and Candy (God rest his soul). The reason why this film continues to resonate with so many people some 25 years after its theatrical release is because it spawns an emotional core. I can almost guarantee that, if this were made today in the hands of a different director, it'd consist of nothing but sporadically shallow humour and little-to-no sympathy and love for its characters. It's simply a wonderful film.

Michael Clayton (2007) 4.5
Michael Clayton is one of the best legal dramas I've seen since The Insider. Clooney was at his best here; he played the role of the discruntled but loyal law firm dog's body perfectly. Tilda Swanson was also very convincing as the psychotic careerist out for Clooney's blood. The tension slowly builds through out this well-paced and well directed drama, culminating in a memerable and gripping ending.

Miami Vice (2006) 2.0
This film is just a collection of monsterous mistakes, none bigger than the fact that it even exists at all. Here are the top 5 mistakes that make Miami Vice the worst TV to film conversion I've ever seen:
1. Colin Farrell
2. The script was horrendous
3. That woman
4. 90% of the film was taken up by Colin Farrells love affair with a minor, unimportant and annoying character.
5. The very sad attempt by Michael Mann the to redicover the magic of Heat, but instead drops a huge hot turd on the viewer.
The Monuments Men (2014) 2

Shadows (Cassavetes, 1959) - 6/10 -- Every movie by Cassavetes makes me feel awkward for moments, usually involving the characters, what is being said, or not said. Pretty good movie, and for the late 50's, a truly independent film on the mores and situations of interracial society mixed the beatnik philosophy.

To be fair, it is hardly a film that requires a large size widescreen print to fully enjoy. The jokes are funny enough on their own.
If you enjoy the old Universal Horror films, check out Brooks' Young Frankenstein, very funny. That would benefit from a larger viewing experience, the black and white cinematography is excellent.

Psycho // 1960
A pleasant and terrifyingly good revisit of one of the very best from Mr. Hitchcock's widely respected filmography, Psycho! Right from the opening credits when we get introduced to one of the greatest soundtracks ever the film already has a hold of you. Now, I actually didn't appreciate the soundtrack much until now, but I certainly adore it now. If I heard the soundtrack by itself without knowing the movie and someone told me "it's from a film called Psycho" I wouldn't even question him. It captures the feeling perfectly with its aggressive attitude and underlaying layer of terror and mystery.
The performances are great all around and especially Anthony Perkins is fantastic as Norman Bates. The story is tense, the black and white cinematography is strong and very fitting, and last but not least it's even refreshing and original. Well, it still is to me anyways, though it has quite a few years on its back. Funny enough, the twist ending and overall story stayed hidden from me until I watched it the first time. Can you believe that, a more than 50 year old film manages to stay spoiler-free for me. And with a rewatch the twist is still nicely set up and impressively executed. Though, I still hate how they go on and on explaining it all in the end. We get, alright? And even though we might be more used to twist endings I'm sure people got the sense of it back in 1960 as well. And that's one of the reasons I can't quite give it a perfect 10...
Still, it's Hitch at his finest and I enjoy the movie tremendously as this smaller yet very effective film that it is. Doesn't surpass the likes of Rear Window or Vertigo to me, though. ;)

Robin and the 7 Hoods (1964)
Take Robin Hood and his Merry Men, and make them gangsters in Chicago in the 1930s, and you end up with Robin and the 7 Hoods.
This movie stars most of the Rat Pack, with Frank Sinatra as Robbo (Robin Hood), Dean Martin as John (Little John), and Sammy Davis Jr. as Will (Will Scarlett). Two members of the Rat Pack are missing, (Peter Lawford and Joey Bishop), but they're replaced with Peter Falk as Guy Gisborne, and Bing Crosby as Allen A. Dale, who both do a great job.
As a musical, this is just an average movie, with a few good songs, but nothing that shines like some of the better musicals, but as a movie, it's a fun movie with an interesting twist on the classic Robin Hood.

Paris When It Sizzles (1964)
Paris When It Sizzles is a romantic comedy starring William Holden as a screenwriter with writer's block who finds inspiration as he falls in love with Audrey Hepburn.
William Holden and Audrey Hepburn have fantastic chemistry together, and there are some fun scenes as they work on their "movie within the movie". If you have eagle eyes, you can watch for a few cameo appearances by stars like Tony Curtis, Marlene Dietrich and Mel Ferrer.

I find this movie rather odd... dont get me wrong.. I like very odd things.. It is one of those films that you dont need the subtitles to understand what the film is showing you.

The Wackiest Ship in the Army (1960)
Fun flick with Jack Lemmon assigned to a special "ship" for what he doesn't know is a super-classified mission during WWII. This may have been one of those movies designed to capitalize on the success of Mister Roberts, albeit five years later. It hardly achieves the greatness of that movie, but with Jack Lemmon, Ricky Nelson, Richard Anderson, and other recognizable supporting players along for the ride, it entertains quite a bit. It's mainly designed to be a comedy, with Lemmon agonizing over being given what is essentially a sloop on which to conduct his mission. The laughs derive mostly from the situation and not laugh-out-loud jokes. There is drama towards the final third but it all gels together for fine entertainment.

Walking Life (Linklater) - 8/10 - Loved it. I'd love to discuss this further. I don't think there are any real spoilers, it's an existential film, no real surprises. Don't think there's anything I could say that would spoil it..

Opening Night (Cassavetes) - 7/10 - Great movie, at times, can be aggressive and hostile for no reason, and I see that kind of violence towards women in every film of his, but it's still really good. It was interesting watching this and "Walking Life" in the same day.. A play inside a play, dream inside a dream.

Aftershock (2012) 3
This is pretty much what you would expect from a movie starring Eli Roth and "presented" by Eli Roth. The first 30 minutes show 3 buddies partying in Chile, they meet 3 girls, and eventually they all go to a nightclub together when an earthquake hits. Carnage ensues, but things get nastier when the local prison collapses and the inmates are on the loose. This movie has good production value, but I would not call it a good movie. I like movies like this as guilty pleasures, and I think it would be comparable to say a Hostel III or a Cabin Fever II.

Onibaba a.k.a. Devil Woman (1964)
One of the most amazing black and white photographies I ever saw in a movie! The lightning is really well done too and the soundtrack is great (not only the music, the sound effects too).
I really didn't connect with the story or the characters though, but looking at this was really worth it.

A Shot in the Dark (1964)
I can't imagine this movie working if it was not by the physical humour of Peter Sellers! It's not particularly well written or well acted by the rest of the crew! It has not a particular incredible scene or clever cinematography! It's a comedy movie that survives thanks to Sellers' brilliance, for that a big up to him!

Stylish, thrilling, great soundtrack. One of my favorites of this year.
Zulu (1964)
Amazing history movie about a battle between a small group of British soldiers and 4000 Zulus!
The Zulu's chants are creeping, the acting is very very good (Michael Cane was already amazing when he was young), the photography very well done and the writing is superb! But what really is fascinating about this movie is the way the human emotions are portrayed before, during and after the battle!

Les parapluies de Cherbourg (1964)
This was a weird but delightful experience! The fact that there are not spoken dialogues, just sung, and that almost line of dialogue was written to be spoken and not sung makes it really weird in the first 15 minutes. But once I was used to it and I let myself go it was an amazing experience! The main theme is beautiful, the voices are great (though I was hoping a bit more intensity sometimes) and the story is amazing!
The way it is shot and all the colours used help you forget your world and drive you to a parallel universe where there is only music and singing is a natural thing!

I have been looking forward to this one after falling in love with Becket a couple of months ago. I won't say the writing was bad, it just didn't feel natural at all. I always felt like I could see the strings which kept me from believing the story or engaging with the characters. O'Toole is a power house though, I love this guy.

THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES (2014)
viewed at the theater today with my cousin and older brother, with basically no expectations coming in. There are facets i did not like and those i did. First, the drawbacks. Some of the lines are ones that were recycled and identical to the first trilogy. Lines like 'the eagles are coming!' There were definitely others, i don't recall them specifically, but i'd have liked to see them adjust and tweak these to sound a bit more fresh. Naturally has a bit of prequel-itis at times, and of course was difficult to not make the 'Battle of the Five CGI Armies' joke. Some of the one-on-one battles dragged slightly towards the end. All that said there was more that i enjoyed, really. In the past two hobbit installments, i was hot/cold on both Thorin and Bilbo.. sometimes i liked them, and sometimes i found them both irritating. Both were very good in this, to my impression. Especially Thorin, his arc was maximized. I'm sure some people will watch these movies and see only dwarves, wizards, elves, little folk, etc. Yet i found there to be real and dramatic undercurrent to the goings-on. Entertaining to see the quarrels inside each faction... the riverfolk in-fight, the dwarves in-fight, the elves in-fight, as well as strife between all these clans.. People fight for the chance to stand up for their friends, their family, and where they come from.. until a common enemy arrives. Definite high point when Dåin Ironfoot shows up with his dwarves, Thorin's cousin. Along with the ensuing dynamic between he and Thorin. At first i was afraid Smaug the dragon's death may be a bit sudden and anti-climactic, then i let myself be wrapped up and thrilled at Thorin reflecting and filling the void of Smaug the Terrible. Not going to update my Top 10 or anything, even so, this is as good and compelling as i could've hoped for and i left the theater satisfied

We Are the Best! (2014) 4
I enjoyed this movie a lot. My expectations were very high because it's Lukas Moodysson, and they were met pretty much exactly. I was kind of hoping it would be as good as Show Me Love or Lilya 4-ever, but I didn't actually expect it to be. It wasn't, but it was still a very excellent movie. I thoroughly enjoyed every second of it. There were a lot of really interesting shots, like the one in the picture above. Really good composition in the sets, wardrobe, and cinematography coming together to make it really easy on the eyes. The acting was very good. There wasn't as much intense emotion as in Moodysson's other movies I've seen, but when there was it was done perfectly. The movie was all about friendship and personal struggle as three young girls tried to form a Punk band. I especially liked the blonde girl who played a quiet Christian with no friends until these other two girls came and asked her to join their band.

Sex and the Single Girl (1964)
Tony Curtis and Natalie Wood star in this romantic comedy about a sleazy magazine writer who impersonates his neighbor and romances a sex expert to prove that she's a fraud. Henry Fonda and Lauren Bacall co-star as the neighbor and his wife.
This movie is hysterical, including several references to Jack Lemmon and the movie Some Like It Hot, and a fantastic chase scene late in the movie.
I highly recommend this wonderful movie.

The Americanization of Emily (1964)
The Americanization of Emily is a wartime comedy/drama starring James Garner, Julie Andrews, Melvyn Douglas and James Coburn, but it's more drama than comedy, so don't expect a laugh-a-minute movie.
James Garner stars as a naval officer who falls in love with Julie Andrews, and then gets sent on a very dangerous mission. They realize that their views on the war are very different, and there are a few tense scenes before he leaves.
The movie started off a little bit slow, but it picked up nicely, and ended up being a very good movie. I expected a little better chemistry between James Garner and Julie Andrews, but their chemistry gets better as the movie goes on as well.
Overall, this is a very good movie, and I recommend seeing it.

Kill List (2011)
Creepy, disturbing, atmospheric and mysterious. Kill List is one of the darkest films I've seen, and also has a really ambitious way of merging genres together. Kind of slow moving at times, but overall pretty entertaining. Not sure if I liked the camerawork or not, the lighting was good but there seemed to be a lot of handheld stuff, which I'm not a huge fan of. Anyway, if you're bored and are in the mood for a dark and disturbing thriller, watch Kill List. It's on Netflix.

Streamers (Altman, 1983) - 4/10 - I either really, really love some Altman films, or some are just plain misses. This could have been a great movie, but I think the homosexual exploits were too much. They make every gay man so unlikeable, that it becomes the movie, instead of Vietnam in that movie. Even a show I used to watch "Six Feet Under" - the only thing David talks about is his homosexuality. Some think it's great to have a gay man on the show, but I think it's exploitation, incorrect, marketing, and does the opposite...

Back to the Future: Part II
C+
Starts off a mess, but get's better once we leave the future scenes (I'm aware that Bob's Gale and Zemeckis were taking the p*ss with these scenes, but the editting seemed pretty sloppy at times and it really wasn't much fun). Even then it never reaches the same level of enjoyment as the first (or even the third).
You can tell Robert Zemeckis hadn't committed himself as fully to this film as he should've done, something he's since admitted.
But...it's still alright and always gets me in the mood to watch Part III.
Personally, I thought Back to the Future Part II was the weakest of the three films.

The Seventh Seal 10/10!

David Cronenberg's The Fly 9/10
I love Cronenberg and this is his second worst, but still great.
Inside Man 9/10!

Monty Python and the Holy Grail 9/10
I LOVE this movie. The ending is soo good.
The Man Who New Too Much 9/10
Loved this film and the ending made me so happy. This is the worst Hitchcock I have seen so far(I think) and it's still a nine!
Yi Yi 10/10
This is without a doubt the best film of the decade. I enjoyed every moment of it. I loved the kid that plays Yang-Yang(Jonathan Chang) and everyone else was good, but Yang-Yang was just unbelievable! Great shots throughout the film, I loved how he used the mirror so much. What I like the most though is that it has humor, sensitivity, and emotion, thats what I want in my films!! The ending of the movie is sad, but also happy in a way one of the best endings ever also one of the best films ever.
I have no problems with most of your ratings except for Inside Man...hated that movie with a white hot passion. Very pleased to see that you enjoyed The Man who Knew too Much so much...I love that movie.

Seven Brides for Seven Brothers - 7/10
I 100% saw this film because of the dance number at the barn raising that Citizen Rules posted way back in that "Why Do People Hate Musicals" thread. Although I'm starting to come around a bit to the idea of them, I have historically disliked musicals across the board. This one... well, it's a mixed bag, that's for sure. The two main leads have obscenely good, operatic voices with the perfect amount of vibrato (not enough to obscure their lines, but more than enough to add a rich, layered texture to their singing). The choreography, especially for the barn raising scene, is just as amazing. The plot, however, is more than a little problematic: starting off as seemingly a Western retelling Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, it quickly progresses into the protagonists kidnapping the town's womenfolk under the belief of "they really like / want it, even if they say that they don't," detaining them in isolation for an extended period of time, and then being forcibly wed after apparently succumbing to Stockholm Syndrome. I know it's a comedy, and I try to keep that in mind, but the plot... it still has issues.
I think you might have taken Seven Brides for Seven Brothers a little too seriously.
Tini zabutykh predkiv a.k.a. Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors (1964)
I feel that this movie spoke to a very deep part of myself. The music, the colours, the camera work, the setting, the constant Ukranian folk references, everything is fascinating in a very special way!
The story gets a bit messy at some point but the emotions are all there, in a very weirdly attractive manner!
In sum, a mind blowing masterpiece!

The Experts (1989)
John Travolta's slump years (his dwindling career between the early 80's and 1994, minus Blow Out and the Look Who's Talking movies- okay, maybe just the first one) may have produced one particular movie that I'd like to hail a cult comedy classic.
I'm sure not too many people have seen or even heard of The Experts, and I can honestly say they (meaning you) might have missed out on a film that was quite funny and entertaining, even though lacking in character development, and featured the always sexy Kelly Preston (Travolta and Preston met on the set and would later get married).
The movie takes a jab at the Cold War, which at the time of release was nearing its end, so if you're into films about that specific topic, you'd might want to check it out and enjoy a few laughs.

David Fincher does it again! For those who say that Nolan makes unpredictable movies, this is what unpredictable looks like! He manages to be always one step ahead, while creating an amazing atmosphere with the soundtrack, the pacing, the camera angles and the settings - everything perfectly used. Tokyo Story (Ozu) - 8/10 - Loved it. Sentimental. And there were a lot of parts of the movie that weren't saying much, nodding, one word questions and answers, but it has warmth, even from her smiles. Me and Citizen were talking about what we learn from film outside of the film itself... For example, I notice in Japanese movies there is no or very little touching, mostly bowing. This film is 61 years old, and the elders are saying how it's a different world, how their kids have changed. I also notice a lot of Japanese films where parents are seen as burdens, but in private.
The only thing I kinda feel bad is that I was listening to a series of Orson-Bogdanovich interviews, and Orson says how McCarey wins the award for Best Picture, and as he collects his Oscar, he says "For the wrong movie," and Orson mentions how "Make Way For Tomorrow" was such a great picture, and how he cries every time. And now I read that "Tokyo Story" was inspired by "Make Way For Tomorrow" -- I only watched Tokyo Story because it's been sitting around, and I kept delaying it for other movies for whatever reasons.
Anyone have a preference?

Wasn't sure what to expect going into this. On one hand my expectations were sky high, but still I couldn't help but to see this film as being a bit too simplistic and artistic for my style. God, was I wrong...
The first thing I noticed was just how beautifully filmed it was, every single frame was composed and aligned to perfection. I could pause the movie every minute if I wanted to admire the images created in themselves. But I never paused it. The movie surprised me by evolving constantly and interestingly throughout and it just kept getting better. It's a small film, but so powerful, so beautiful, so tragic.
The ending is absolute perfection with fitting music as well, though I must say Trier's very unusual use of the same song in his 'Nymphomaniac', that is Bach's beautifully composed "Ich Ruf Zu Dir Herr Jesu Christ", kind of threw me off for a second when it started playing in this way more 'sensitive' film. Sort of what A Clockwork did to Singin' in the Rain, if you know what I mean lol. Anyways, beautiful, beautiful, beautiful film.
5... you mad at me you can take half a popcorn, but I really do feel like it's that great.

Okay, I get it. You have a different opinion of Fast Times than I, but that is your bleeping problem and none of my business.
Sorry, I was intending that in a humorous way. Personally I've only ever given 5 stars to 1 movie. So it's not so much about Fast Times as it is about 5 stars. But Fast Times is a hilarious movie which I did enjoy and do own on VHS.
Edit: It's not just a funny movie either, it's a really solid movie overall with good serious moments and good acting too. It's just not a contender for greatest movie of all time, which is what I would reserve 5 stars for personally.

No need for an apology. I was just being humorous with you, though it may have sounded angry (I think people who argue and fight on message boards are "keyboard warriors" and seriously need to consider "getting a life")
As a high school comedy genre film, Fast Times goes above and beyond. It's got the laughs, memorable performances and quotes, and a brilliant plot, or sub-plots, that keeps the viewer engaged and entertained. For that, I gave it five stars.
You have your reasons. But then if another movie is better you can't give it a higher rating.

Goodbye Charlie (1964)
Goodbye Charlie is a comedy starring Debbie Reynolds as Charlie, a womanizer who is shot and killed by an angry husband, and is reincarnated as a woman, and Tony Curtis as George, his best friend. Walter Matthau has a supporting role as the man who shot and killed Charlie, and Pat Boone plays the man who helps Charlie when he sees her as a dazed and confused woman.
This is a fun movie, but it's not a rolling-on-the-floor type of comedy. There are some chuckles here and there, but both Debbie Reynolds and Tony Curtis have made better movies. And I thought Walter Matthau was kind of a strange choice for his role, but he does a good job.
It's worth seeing if you like Debbie Reynolds and Tony Curtis, and if you're just looking for a fun movie, but don't set your expectations too high.

Earth to Echo (2014)
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/5/56/Earth_to_Echo.jpg
I went in on this expecting it to be bad. From what I'd gathered from the trailer this would be a mixture of E.T. and Super 8. I didn't like either (that's right, I'm the only person on the face of this planet who didn't like E.T.).
Well, it is exactly that but... it's not bad. In fact, I would go as far as to call the movie heartwarming. The relationships between the boys are vivid, the story, while totally ripped off, is actually decent and the special effects were kept fairly minimalistic which works to the movie's advantage because if they went any further with the CGI it would become the poor man's Transformers.
All in all, I was pleasantly surprised and I have to say; this is what the original E.T. should have been like.

Die Hard III: Die Hard with a Vengeance (1995)
Is there any better Christmas movie than Die Hard? This one is as good, if not better, than the first one! Samuel L. Jackson is an amazing addition to the cast, especially because he brings a little bit of Pulp Fiction's Jules that fits perfectly in this! 100% entertaining action, insanely quotable and with some really epic moments!

Sling Blade (1996, Billy Bob Thornton)
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/4/44/Slingbladeposter.jpg/220px-Slingbladeposter.jpg
This is one of my very favourite films, and it was in need for another viewing. Yet again I find myself appreciating this work for the beautiful, haunting, tragic, and poignant masterpiece that it is. What particularly impresses me most is Thornton's remarkably restraint, careful and sensitive direction. This film adopts an observant sensibility, consisting of many long, simple takes (the composition is brilliant), and never getting too excessive or confrontational with its framing and photography. The film, especially from an editorial standpoint, never sporadically and frequently cut like so many films often do, even during the most pivotal of moments. The climax of the film, if you will, is all done in one masterful take, as are many other salient moments. Some may call this particular approach to storytelling too distant, others inert and uncinematic, but to me, it's a testament to Thornton's appreciation for story and pacing, never allowing the dramatic components of the story dictating the flow of it. And when the camera does move, it's slow and subtle. And when it does cut, it feels seamless and right, which is precisely the purpose of good editing. It reminded me of an Ozu film in many ways, with Thornton exhibiting some impressive dexterity behind the camera. It's simply an excellent film, with Thornton being at his very best as an actor, screenwriter and director. One of the great slices of Southern Gothic storytelling, and a beautifully real and human work.

Yeah, I agree, the film nails a dreary mood and never falls into being a cinematic melodrama.
Marnie (1964)
I read some comments on the Internet about this movie being a disappointment after so many Hitchcock's classics! Well, I can't understand that because I enjoyed this so much more than Psycho and Rear Window! It has incredible cinematography, great acting (Sean Connery's 007 fits here perfectly) and the building up till the end is amazing! One of Hitchcock's finest, in my opinion!

Severely underrated effort, especially considering the fact that this is the final collaboration between Herzog and Kinski.Highly entertaining, beautifully shot, and there are some moments of striking beauty. The narrative however is the film's main shortcoming, as it simply lacks depth.

City of Women 3
Indulgent and overly long, somewhat messy effort from late-career fellini. It is not one of his best efforts, but there are a few striking sequences. The film from a visual standpoint is magnificent, it's in the messy, unfocused narrative where it loses it's way.
Wish everyone here a happy holiday.

I saw this with my parents earlier today and we were pretty much flabbergasted by this picturesque movie. Its an existential western reminiscent of The Searches from 1956. The film is surreal and slow, but that's not something negative in my world. Without spoiling the ending, it wraps the whole movie up in an intriguing fashion.

I went into this one with a vague idea of what it was about, but wasn't prepared for just how depressing it was. Some of that sadness was tempered by the humor and also by how irritating I found the character of Hilda to be (Jim wasn't exactly bright, but Hilda is so empty headed it's infuriating). I said just today that I should watch Lisandro Alonso's films, so today I got started by watching his 2004 Los Muertos:
http://static.cinemagia.ro/img/db/movie/36/43/93/los-muertos-840922l.jpg
The film's opening shot initially had me worried with its selective and "artful" use of focus, but that quickly became a much more abstracted and protracted sequence reminiscent of some of my favorite moments in Godard (like the astounding opening of Passion or the second opening of In Praise of Love). While the rest of the film didn't stay in the same abstract mode, the sense of wonderment that filled that sequence never left. Alonso's camera perfectly captures the world through the eyes of someone who's re-entering it. Like a second, cautious birth with ends with the main character playing with a children's toy. Aside from momentary revelations and rhythms, the film is highly open, allegorical and symbolic. I'm very interested in seeing more from Alonso.
I don't usually rate here, but I'll give it 4.5

Dear Heart (1964)
Dear Heart is a romantic comedy starring Glenn Ford and Geraldine Page. It's a cute movie with some fun scenes, but for some reason Glenn Ford just doesn't work for me as a romantic leading man. He seems a bit too rigid to be the guy who gets the girl. He's a bit more likable in this movie than he was in The Courtship of Eddie's Father, but he's still just a bit too cold in my opinion.

Father Goose (1964)
Cary Grant plays against type in this romantic comedy, but it works anyway. He's scruffy and disheveled, instead of his normal charming character, but he's still the same wonderful Cary Grant in another great movie.
Cary Grant plays a coast-watcher who rescues Leslie Caron and seven young schoolgirls who are stranded on an island. He brings them back to his island, and while waiting to be rescued, the two adults clash, but as expected, they eventually fall in love. There are also some tense moments when the Japanese arrive at the island.

Thanks. I'll look for those movies. I like Glenn Ford as an actor. I just think he doesn't come off likable enough to be a good leading man in a romantic movie.
I watch a lot of rom-coms, and there's a feeling of falling in love with the leading man, but I don't get that feeling with him. I kind of wonder what the leading lady sees in him.

A classic Christmas tradition, watching this non-traditional Christmas classic!
What can I say about this without sounding cliché? We all know it, it's a great action thriller and a fun ride. Great peformances from the main cast, plenty of memorable lines, good intense action and drama. It's always a pleasure rewatching this.
But laying the "action classic" status aside for a minute, it does have its flaws, slight pacing problems and minor plotholes and misfires. I love the film (though I do prefer the third entry), but just because a film is remembered to be a milestone or whatever, I'm still going to view it as every other movie I see. That said, I'll give it a solid rating of

The Godfather Part II
4.5
A deeper movie than the first though I quite preferred the simplicity of the original, believe it or not. De Niro just added another brilliant performance to his resume and Al Pacino kicking with his cold embodiment of Don Michael Corleone. The scene at the end (where they're all sitting together) had a different feel to the rest of the film, it's like it was taken straight out of the first Godfather (that may account to Sonny), like an outtake or something. The GF II seems emotionally dead to reflect Michael's deteriorating character while GF has a sense of uplift which I can't put my finger on. Call me paranoid or whatever. Stellar film either way.
Forrest Gump
2.5
This was fine but the excessiveness doesn't support the story (army hero, stripper love interest, Elvis Presley, hippies etc. wackiness), I'd take Sling Blade's down to earth and methodical approach. Above that, they should've delved deeper into the story of Gump's Mom, they skim over her and I don't think she ever meets Jenny, now that would've made for quite the situation and dialogue. Tom Hanks was good, the film is completely watchable.
DUEL
4.5
It's on my top 100, so I obviously love DUEL and still do. Given that I watched both almost back to back, DUEL's driving scene carry great resemblance to Deliverance's rafting scenes, both intense, precise and beautiful. The rare case of a lack of character development adding to the terror in mystique of the antagonist.
Deliverance
5
In my top 10, as good as ever. Mark F wrote some great stuff on this film in the past and he mentioned the film is a case of "what goes around comes around", I completely agree with those sentiments. Here are these city men venturing into the outback which will soon be demolished to make way for something artificial (I assume, they never say what the river going to be turned into). Even though, these city men are not directly responsible for the imminent change, they contribute in the grand scheme of things. It's a truly great message which isn't shoved in your face. The cinematography is so natural, that's the true appeal of it, untampered and not overly edited, it's pure beauty which contrasts the dark themes.
Joe (Peter Boyle)
3.5
A forgotten films of the 70s, Peter Boyle's performance is rambunctiously great. He really nailed the rambling, bitter father in the time of hippie rise. I feel as though amateurish editing and an abrupt ending stopped it from being truly great, as well as lack of perspective on the father's daughter but nonetheless, still a very good film in the wake of other vigilante-type titles.
Thief (James Caan)
3
Gloomy lights and visuals, reminded of The Killing of a Chinese Bookie. Though that's really the only major plus, I have to mention I'm liking James Caan a lot, he's a bit of an underrated actor. Thief is definitely worthy of a watch, solid.
Malcom X
4.5
Denzel totally loses himself as the Detroit Red, Training Day is the only one which competes with this performance. His development from a small time hustler to one of the most powerful men in the world is fantastically believable. Spike Lee packs so much into a near four hours and it's definitely feels like you've witnessed an entire life. Easily one of the best biographical movies I've seen.
Fail-Safe (1964)
Released on the same year of Kubrick's Dr. Strangelove, Fail-Safe is a much more dramatic view upon the same subject - the Cold War and the possibility of a Nuclear Holocaust!
It's a perfect portray of what could happen if one of the sides would go to war and what would men need to sacrifice so the world would continue its life! It also raises a lot of very valid questions about technology, war and patriotism!
The acting is superb by the entire main cast and there are some very interesting bits of cinematography!
Sidney Lumet created a masterpiece that should be a lot more known!

I've wanted to watch this for a long time now, and thankfully it met my high expectations. The dark, brooding atmosphere is evocatively depicted by gloomy, sometimes haunting lighting and some of the shots are stunning. Welles embodies a monster as the cantankerous chief Quinlan. The characters that inhabit this grimy border town are all full of confliction, and this is a superb tale of corruption and border politics.
My only issue was the performance of Charlton Heston. I think he takes away from the gritty mood somewhat, but apart from that I loved it.

Sometimes Glenn Ford is suited to his roles and he nails it. He's really good in Gilda and as Mark said The Teahouse of the August Moon. (Brando is amazing in that BTW). But mostly Glenn Ford seems a little stiff to be a romantic lead.
I'm watching The Courtship of Eddie's Father with the commentary track by the three actresses: Shirley Jones, Stella Stevens and Dina Merrill. Personally all three really liked Glenn Ford the man. I was surprised to hear Shirley Jones say that she thought while he was charismatic on film she was disappointed how uncharismatic he was in person. He sounds like he was shy and kept to himself on the set. If I was a producer I wouldn't won't him to play a romantic lead in my movie. I do think he's talented but he's better at playing a pensive brooding character.

I feel like I'm underrating this a little because I thought it was brilliant for the most part. I watched the director's cut on Hulu which is just shy of 2 1/2 hours long, and I thought that it was drawn out more than it had to be. It's a great story that's at times terrifying for a movie that isn't horror. A great musical score, and cinematography that makes you feel like you're there help make it a well rounded, impressive, and original movie.

THE INTERVIEW (2014)
Exactly what I expected. A movie looking and feeling exactly like the recent wave of Rogen comedies (including This is the End and Bad Neighbors). Once, like back in the Superbad days, I actually liked some of those he starred in, mainly because they felt like well done comedies and with a little message in there. And if the message was unclear or weak it didn't matter, cause the jokes were great and original and the visual gags were spot on. Now these Seth comedies just feel like overly dumb and idotic movies done entirely so him and some good friends could team up and have fun with a little "school project". The rest of us? We just want to leave the theatre (though I sure as hell didn't see it there, or even paid for this crap... But too bad for those who do).
The movie is dumb and unfunny. A few good jokes, meaning 3-4, and a few visual gags that were quite funny. But overall it feels like leftover junk. Jokes fall as flat as if they were the 20th improvised take they did (which actually might be the case). The jokes are as dumb as they get and I often wonder during these comedies, who the f*ck even enjoys them? Who can laugh all the way through sh*t like this? Who, other than a child, can laugh at the fact that Kim Jong-Un can talk to dolphins or hasn't got a butthole? That's like a whole new low for comedy and more importantly those who pay to see it...
Other than that it's also filled with jokes that is dacades old, some of which wasn't even funny to start with, and some which were but sure as hell are in the ground now. Subtitle gags? Seen it. Jokes about boners, sex, homosexuality, d*cks, veginas, ****, drugs, alchohol SEEN IT - and much better executed. Much better.
The only thing this truly got going for it is its idea. It's hilarious and brave to want to make a movie like this, killing Kim Jong-un and all. But it's basically consists of brainstorm ideas every person in the world would think of in the first 10 seconds of discussing the idea - and discussing some more would make better ideas - it jus seems like they just stopped at 10 seconds for no appearent reason...
"Okay so what could we do?" "Ehmm, let's show people Kim Jung-un as a total opposite kind of person, a pathetic and laugable person listening to something like Katy Perry?" "Great! We need a script first right?" "No there's no need, we'll just make up the jokes as we go..." "In the end we make money no matter if we try or not, so why not just have some fun?"
The movie is just a mess of childish, pathetic and unfunny jokes and gags, with a small ray of sunshine shining through once in a while showing us what this film might could've been. Unfortunately they just jumped the smallest fence in every single decision they made... Almost. But 10-20% good material doesn't make a good film...

I wasn't sure what to expect when I started watching this but the truth is I was completely blown away!
When you do a movie which is screened 80% in a prison cell and using only 5 actors you have to perfect acting, an interesting concept and good writing! If the movie is a thriller, even harder the task! Well, this movie goes for it and it's amazing!
I felt so claustrofobic, so anxious and so thrilled by it! When I realized I was breathing with the characters, feeling relieved whenever they were feeling releived, scared when they were scared, etc.
A masterpiece and one of the best movies of the decade!

Such a fun ride and I especially remember loving this back in the days, though I never viewed it as a favourite. While I still don't see it as an absolute favourite, it's defiantly a real pleasure to watch. Smooth and smart animation, colorful set pieces, great script and enjoyable characters (except for the "villain", I never liked him much, though I see what they went for...)
I admire the themes about identity, family, togetherness, retiring from what you love and the life that comes after and so on. But to me, this has always mainly been a fun and (not to forget) incredibe ride. It's not as touching as other Pixars, not as well-balanced, and arguably not as diverse. But on its own it actually do lighten some of those mentioned, and for what it's aiming for it pretty much hits the spot right in the center!

Typical Seth Rogen movie, overflowing with stupidity and lacking any actual humor. Hopefully it's the last time I ever have to see him knit his eyebrows, an annoying habit that seems to be the extent of his acting ability. As terrible as he is, he was actually outdone by the atrocious performance of James Franco. The actor who played Kim Jong-un was decent though, and the situations had humorous potential (though none of them were realized), so for that I'll give it a C rating. Or rating_2 for those who like the popcorn bags.

I thought the villain was one of the best characters in the movie. He was different from the normal villains where the goal is to destroy as many huge cities as possible for dumb enjoyment. The philosophy behind his evil was original and was convincing for me.

Hench, why I followed up my opinion with a paranthesis stating it isn't neccesarily a bad villain and I see what they tried to do, I just didn't really like him.
Personally I don't it was that original either, really. A fanboy being disappointed by his hero, then growing up to show his worth and wants to be the best, then moves all who would be able to intervine out of the way, then realizes he can't do what real superheroes can do and creating you own power over people isn't ideal and is eventually defeated by his own uncontrolable ego and power-dream etc...
So as I said, what they aimed for they did well and I respect it, but I'm just not a fan of him and what drives him purely out of personal opinion. :)

This is my favorite movie so far from a director that I've had a very hard time getting into. This movie looks great, like all of his movies, even though the scenery is ugly, for lack of a better word. It is slow, and not a whole lot happens, but I found the characters to be pretty interesting. I think it helped me that Richard Harris was in it; he's an actor I like, and having a familiar face in a movie that's out of my comfort zone was a plus for me, even if it does seem like an interesting casting choice. Monica Vitti was also very good, and beautiful to look at. This was my 5th Antonioni film, and the first one to get me involved at all emotionally. I don't think I'd ever get into The Passenger or Blowup, but I'd be interested in revisiting La Notte and L'avventura.

Decent film for a one time watch, but i think it's very surprising that it made the Millenium list here. I put this off for a while because i was under the false impression that it was about a sexual relationship between Gosling and the doll. Surprisingly this didn't make me as uncomfortable as i initially thought it would. Some quite funny moments, and a good performance by Gosling, but i seriously doubt i'll have the desire to watch this again.

Try the re-edited, shorter version of Killing of a Chinese Bookie. It's seriously like a whole other movie, far tighter and more focused. And I guessing that was not the version you tried watching. So give it a go.

The problem I had with this movie is that it doesn't seem to know if it wants to be a serious, disturbing horror movie, or a comedy. I definitely still enjoyed it, because I love the macabre, but it could've been so much more. It takes some strange turns, including when a major A-list actor joins the weirdness with about a half hour left. The movie is a bit of a mess, but I liked it.

Not because it's not stupid, but because those are two of the things that the N.Koreans are told about their leader. Totally down with gbgoodies and Citizen Rules about Glenn Ford in Teahouse of the August Moon. Also about Marlon Brando, who was fantastic playing a Japanese! After so many years, some people tend to forget what range he had as an actor. I thought Glenn Ford was awesome in Gilda also. Maybe his best role.
He is also great in The Man From Colorado (1948) where he plays a man who returns with his friend (William Holden) from the Civil War and is a bit nuts throughout the movie. He plays it very well. He's also great in The Sheepman (1958), which is a very funny Western that I highly recommend. Also in a another comedy, he does a good job in Don't Go Near the Water, which is somewhat similar to Teahouse of the August Moon (1957) as he's a military man caught up in difficult shenanigans. Any of these show Glenn off to good measure.
Raging Bull (1980)
There is not anything I could say about this movie that it was not already said by everyone who has ever seen it, except maybe one thing: I like Martin Scorcese. I don't love him, but I like him. Until today he has never blown me away with one of his movies and I've seen a lot of them (yes, including Taxi Driver).

The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964)
This is a unique film because all of the dialogue is sung, not spoken, but the movie itself, is more about the story, not the music. I love the way the music helps the emotional feel of the movie so well. By that I mean, you can actually feel the characters emotions changing from happy to sad, etc., just by listening to the tone of the music.
Geneviève and her mother remind me of a little bit of Maria and Anita from West Side Story, basically due to the way they fight over the boy she likes, and the shop setting.
One thing that bothered me a little bit, (but not enough to take away from my enjoyment of the movie), was when Geneviève's mother went to sell her necklace. She brought it to the shop to sell, then she left it with a stranger, getting no receipt, no money, and no guarantee that she would ever see this man again. Plus, they didn't even agree on a price before she left the store. (Like i said, it's not a big deal. It's just me being a little bit nitpicky.)
This is, by far, my favorite foreign film. I would love to see an English language version of this movie, pretty much exactly like this movie, only with English dialogue.

I watched the underrated gem Boomerang the other day, which any Eddie Murphy fans should seek out if they haven't seen it. After thoroughly enjoying that film, I decided to check out Netflix's selection of Murphy movies and noticed this one. I was aware of the good reputation it had, so I decided to give it a go.
The opening scenes left me lukewarm at best, but once Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall arrive in New York, it takes a significant turn for the better. Full of wonderful character actors like John Amos and Frankie Faison, the film makes the most of it's New York location and provides a humorous and comfortable experience.
It never goes too far with the comedy, something which has become a problem in Hollywood in recent years. I don't think it's Eddie Murphy's best film, nor one of the great comedies, but it's entertaining throughout and contains some great New York character too.

Exactly. MovieGal's character is a foreign film loving guy, but I find it very easy to achieve myself. :p
My character? You mean the actor that's always in my avatar? Yeah... I love foreign film and being American.... I sometimes would rather watch a foreign film than a Hollywood film... why? American cinema relies to much on cgi anymore, foreign films definitely rely on acting ability.
Very short and funny scene from Coming to America and vintage Murphy.

Coming to America, yes! Hilarious movie that is never hampered by repeated viewings for me. :D I love Eriq La Salle's character, whose head is covered with Jheri Curl.

Love what he does to the couch later. :D
Il grande silenzio a.k.a. The Great Silence (1968)
A great spaghetti-western by Corbucci!
This one is slightly different from the usual westerns because the bad guys are the bounty hunters while the outlaws are just trying to survive in a hard world! It's also the western that depressed me the most, with its beautiful yet sad ending! The soundtrack is by Morricone and, in my opinion, one of the best he has ever made! It has some pacing issues and some small incongruences (Corbucci insists on having a 6 bullet gun fire more than 6 bullets) but the last 30 minutes are pure gold!

Into the Storm (2014) 3
Maybe not a very good movie in general, but if you like weather disaster movies, it's a must see. At under 90 minutes long, it's a quick, easy watch. There's nothing here worth seeing besides the action, but there's a lot of it, and it's thrilling.

Good heavens. Why isn't Busby Berkely considered a god?
I loved the story of 42nd Street a little more (Baxter's character gave that film an extra dimension of depth), but the three main musical numbers in this film are truly INSANE. Some of the best stuff I've ever seen. Cagney is also great.

Can't wait to see Gold Diggers of 1933 now!

La Rupture

i don't even know where to start with this one. it works on so many levels: as an allegory of innocence vs. evil, or as an examination of class structure, or just as a really compelling and intricately plotted melodrama with a brilliant duality among the scenes and characters. i was a little worried that i would be disappointed in the beginning, but once it got going i loved every second. this was my 2nd Chabrol, but i really need to see more.

Most people won't know this but I'm a big fan of international cinema. I recently watched a hindi movie called "Kal Ho Na Ho" and damn. I've never fought back so many tears during a movie. I have to say, anyone who's willing to watch a movie based on subtitles, they need to watch this.
10/10 - It was a masterpiece that only got better with the times.

- This is definitely not a great movie but it was funny as hell and a very entertaining flick. I like every performance in the movie and very appreciate the good laughing scenes. Recommended.
