Well, my memories of this weren't too fond, mainly because my sister used to watch it all the time with an annoyed eight-year-old me next to her on the couch, but it was on cable, nothing else was on, and somehow I got over it and actually managed to enjoy it this time around. Guess my sister wasn't as wrong about this one as I used to think she was.

Watched The Rounders (1965), a real surprise for me. It's just a leisurely but completely side-slapping movie about modern-day cowboys who end up working for the same tightwad boss (Chill Wills) every roundup season, but keep coming back. The two cowboys are Glenn Ford and Henry Fonda and they hire on to break horses and they do, except for one roan, who is the most obstinate creature on earth. Despite the powerhouse pairing of Ford and Fonda, the horse is the star of the film. Seriously. One moment you think he's going to let Ford break him, then just as suddenly Ford is lying on the ground or in the mud. The horse allows Ford to ride him for a while in order to round up stray cattle but then the horse suddenly decides he's going to run Ford through some low-hanging branches. And so on.

Ford and Fonda are tired of putting up with the roan and equally as tired of working for Wills, so Ford comes up with an idea to get this "won't be rode" horse to make them loads of money. But, it's almost as if the horse can read their minds. Sure, they meet up with friends along the way, and almost pair up with a couple of ditzy blondes, but their story with the hilarious horse is the whole thrust of the movie. I highly recommend this film.

meh nothing special. Pretty cliche in many regards. Except the whole Stine's daughter thing which I found interesting but also left me with more questions I won't get into spoilers but some stuff could of been explained much better imo. Not as bad as I thought it was gonna be though. Jack Black sounds like he is trying to talk like Peter Dinklage (If you've ever heard Peter's regular American Accent it is so similar it isn't even funny, okay it kind of is) in the movie but you get use to it quick. Jack actually isn't terrible and was the best part of the movie for me.

I agree with him, it was a great movie, also I wanna point out that, it could have been over in half an hour, instead of an hour and a half, but that's the thing of this movie, while some movies drag way too long with useless things, this one didn't, and the few scenes that were way too long were good, there are movies in which you want to see the ending, and some in which you enjoy the path to the ending. Which was this case :)

The final installment of this wonderful trilogy follows the protagonist into adulthood, where the highs and lows continue to take turns making their marks. I did think there was a little bit of emotion left on the table in this movie, but there's still plenty to go around. I loved the whole trilogy and this is how I'd rank them-

1. Pather Panchali
2. Apur Sansar
3. Aparajito

A big rep for The Red Shoes, that's a film that Martin Scorsese says influenced and inspired him. I loved that one, I need to see it again sometime.

Johnny Got His Gun - 9/10

Wow!

One of the best written films I ever saw. Some real funny parts too. A tiny lull after about an hour, otherwise it would have got a 10. Very original and creative. I never heard of this movie until Mort Sahl mentioned it on his streaming show last week. I had it for a while, then saw in the "Most depressing/cynical films" thread that Gabrielle had mentioned it with one of my favs "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?"

I'm wondering why I never heard of it, and why it's never even mentioned among great movies. I'm guessing it has something to do with the fact that Dalton Trumbo was a Communist, and a member of the "Hollywood 10" which will always remain a stain in America.

I'm very curious about the film "Trumbo" coming out. I think it's perfect Bryan Cranston is in it, since so many people will see it with the taste of meth (Breaking Bad) in their mouth. I just hope they don't run away from the substance. Please no diversions!

Very original, just amazing film about war, humanity, purpose, and the dirty business of war and the system in general.

P.S. - I find it interesting that M*A*S*H was right before this, and similar in ways. Anti-war movie, using some satire, both written by the Hollywood Blacklisted 10, and both having Donald Sutherland.
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/2/29/Johnny_Got_His_Gun_poster.jpg

I love this movie but it takes several years (minimum) to watch it again due to the sadness it brings forth.
Truly excellent movie I've seen about 7 or 8 times in my life and it impacts me every single time.
Anyone who has seen Metallica's "One" music video will see a montage of scenes with severe spoiler alerts - so if you haven't seen it, WATCH THE MOVIE FIRST. Though, regardless, it still will hit you if you already know going in.

John Carter (2012) 4

A film with such great franchise potential, thrown into the mud by bad marketing and an extremely huge budget. When the trailers came out they did not excite me for this film (as it must of done to many people), but when I saw it finally after it had come out on DVD I was pleasantly surprised by the film. It is not often a science fiction film these days left me wanting more, and John Carter did that. It is nowhere near a perfect film but it had enough stuff in the movie that kept me engaged and wanting to learn more about the world created.

Agreed, I actually saw it in theaters and thought it was pretty good. It definitely didn't deserve to be the BO disaster that it was. Pretty unfortunate.

Crumb (1994)

2.5

https://www.bostonhassle.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/doc.jpg

This is an acclaimed documentary about Robert Crumb, the famous underground cartoonist. He's has a bit of an odd personality, and for a little while I thought it was interesting. After some time, I became completely disinterested. He comes off as a bit of a creep, and I just got sick of watching and listening to him. Having zero interest in his work didn't help. It's a quality documentary for someone else.

Dark City (1998)
Director : Alex Proyas
Stars: Rufus Sewell, Kiefer Sutherland, Jennifer Connelly

The story is about a man who loses his past and first finds himself in a bath tub, doesn't know about himself and his life, but he has one ability that no one has, he can be alive when the evil forces stops the time and reshapes the world according to their own demand. The story is so fantastic and Proyas' nightmare world come true in that movie.

The story is complex but develops itself as a frequently entertaining thriller. It is thought provoking, which is a lesser thing you'll find in films today. You'll sit there thinking about life after viewing this film. It can easily been our future if we head down the road we are on.

One thing about this movie : it will never get old

http://static.filmmakermagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/tangerine.jpg

"Los Angeles is a beautiful lie."

Shot with the iPhone 5S using an anamorphic lens, Sean Baker's Los Anglian odyssey retains the grit of urban life while also suggesting tropical paradise. Tangerine's characters are just as vibrant as its color temperature, and just as charmingly flawed as footage from consumer grade equipment.

While the term "indie" boarders on pejorative, Baker eschews menial white people problems without turning his picture into a self-congratulatory picket sign. I can't recall the last time I saw a movie populated by minorities and transgender people that wasn't solely about them being minorities and transgender people. It's almost revelatory that Baker treats them like actual, morally and emotionally complex, human beings.

Oh, and it's hilarious.

This is like the tenth time I disagree with critics and their opinions over films. This movie has a 9% on RottenTomatoes (:o). I really wanted to see this movie since the trailers looked good...and there's Simon Pegg.

I did enjoy this movie a lot. I fell for every joke while there were a few that didn't feel as good. There were a few occasions where I just burst out of laughter and I think there is still an important message behind that movie: even though one person has the will and power to change the earth, he can't do it alone because it will turn against him. The Monty Python crew did a good job with their "blablawing" where they said literally anything that meant nothing (they didn't even sound like they had created an alien language).

Overall, it's a Chinese martial arts movie...set in Hong Kong...with Donnie Yen...what do you expect...

This is a very graphic and thrilling film where Donnie Yen must help the police to find a killer who kills great masters of Kung Fu in the order of the Kung Fu mastery.

The action sequences are just amazing especially the last one that takes place in a highway with cars and trucks going by. The camera work during those scenes are very good and the choreography is almost perfect. There is a prison fight scene that was almost as amazing as The Raid 2's, even though it was a 1 against 17 and that there weren't blades and mud. Still, there were some flaws, like every movie, that may or may not be caught at the first glimpse. During the final fight sequence, since there are cars going by, it's no surprise that sometimes we see a car coming and a big time passes by and the car doesn't come, and when the camera takes the same angle, TA-DAA the car reappears! There are some scenes where the plot was obviously enlarged to take some time and there are some clichés that could not be removed from the typical Chinese action movie. While the villain's death is satisfying, the survival of the main character's wife/crush/student/...or something else...(it's not very clear ok?)'s survival was quite unexpected for me.

This is another movie that got mixed to negative reviews from critics that I liked very much. I give this movie a rating_4_5

Great story, but the first hour is filler, writing wasn't great. I also could have done with out the kid narrating with her 8-yr old NY accent. A film with a lot of filler. Maybe in another case I would agree with mark^^, but right here I kind of agree with you, matt.

It took a while to get going, I didn't like the 8-year old narrating with that accent and it did seem very long for a 90-minute movie.

I do like Badlands a whole lot though, I don't think they compare maybe despite of that movie being the closets in style and approach to that of Days of Heaven, out of all Malick's filmography. Anyways, people should know I like visual storytelling and visually striking films; The Tree of Life is one of my all-time favorite films... But yeah, Days of Heaven didn't do it for me....

Days of Heaven is my favorite Malick film, the one which combines his painterly eye with a thoughtful, almost Biblical-level of storytelling. The visuals stunningly show the passage of an entire year on screen in 90 minutes - all four seasons are shown in detail. Besides having my favorite cinematography, it also has my favorite musical score (Ennio Morricone). I was lucky enough to see it at the theatre when it came out, and seeing it on the enormous screen with loud stereophonic sound was extremely affecting. Sure, I admit that it may seem like a movie I wouldn't think that much of because the plot isn't strong and the dialogue mostly forgettable, but the pure cinematic storytelling is what I consider close to perfection. And Linda Manz (who was 15 during filming) is quite hilarious in her narration, trying to find words for thoughts and feelings she's never had but stating some things so matter-of-factly. Of course, all Malick films have idiosyncratic narrations.

Donnie Darko
http://www.filmquadposters.co.uk/posters/donnie-darko-dc-quad-poster.jpg

Overall, a very...peculiar film

I knew this movie was a cult classic and that it had an 8.1 on IMDb, so I decided to watch it.

When the movie ended. I barely understood what had happened the whole time. There were a lot of moments in the movie where it felt like there was no plot at all and that it was only...life. I'm still having a hard time understanding what it was all about. This is how I see it:

So the rabbit-man (or Frank) is a time-traveller who saves Donnie from death and then makes him do a lot of stuff for no apparent reason. At the end, Donnie says the rabbit-guy's gonna kill someone. That happens since the rabbit-guy runs over Donnie's GF and then Donnie kills him by shooting him in the eye...I suppose since when the guy had taken his mask off he had an eye wound...we then see a vortex creating over Donnie's house and then the plane where his mom is crashed and loses an engine. I suppose the engine is the same one that crashed in Donnie's house at the beginning when Frank saved him.

So (*sigh*) finally, Frank saved Donnie...for Donnie to...kill him...and then die himself killed by an engine of a plane where his mom was...but she was in the bedroom...and WHAT????

Nah, I REALLY need someone to explain me this, still it was a very good movie with good camera work and extremely good acting. I still praise the plot for being so complicated since it urges you to seek help or re-watch it. I give Donnie Darko a rating_5

I was the exact same way with Donnie Darko. Had no idea what happened but just knew it was amazing! Did you watch the Director's Cut? I've heard that the theatrical cut is even more confusing, I think I saw the theatrical once when my sister rented it when it came out in '01 but I was so young that I only remembered the ending.

matt, you mostly just listen to movies, right, kind of like they were radio broadcasts? You seem to have no use for visuals, just care about dialogue and subject matter. It certainly consistently seems that way.

I'm interested mostly in the writing, acting, and the story.. Cinematography isn't a big deal to me.

A ninety minute film has 60 minutes of filler??

Just because you're more interested in writing and acting doesn't mean that the other parts aren't there. How are you supposed to enjoy something (and evaluate it, as you've done here) when you're only looking at 1/3 of it?

I once rented it, but the movie was scratched.. I don't have much interest in cinematography. Maybe some of my favorite movies have them, but that's not why I love them.

I think it might be the first time I heard a film fan say that one of the main elements in cinema don't interest them. That's kind of fascinating.

I don't judge you or anything here, Matt, but it just sounds weird to me not finding interest in such an important element in film. I could understand if you had said sound mixing or whatever, but the visual side of things is a pretty big thing in movies and how it presents the other elements of the film and how it makes the audience feel and so on.

matt72582

I guess we'd all have to be specific on the "visuals" -- before we get to that, if the movie doesn't have great writing, acting, story, it won't be saved by other things... For example, "special effects" will never get me to watch a movie.

I think Mark went a bit far with comparing my movie viewing to listening to a radio. A different kind of zoom can change the emotion, but it's the emotion that's important. Some do it visually, some directors do it with the music, or with a line of dialogue.

"A Clockwork Orange" for example. Like films before in the 60's, style was a bigger factor than it was in the past. It works for some movies, but certain visuals can also distract. Speaking of that film, the people I've personally talked to never emphasize the themes - society, behavior, motivations, the criminal justice system, but instead on the sex and violence ONLY.

I saw a film when I was at a friend's house weeks ago. It was a love scene, and it was so long. In the 50's, the second they kissed, the lights would go down, and you got a dissolve, but your imagination could imagination the next 30 minutes or so, leaving more time to get on telling as much story as possible. Notice how many films are at exactly 1hr and 59 minutes (marketing and business), and with such little time, I think a director should put in as much as possible to communicate with the viewer.

It's not just film either, it's similar with music. Some just repeat and repeat, or wait til a few songs later, and play the same chord structure, changing the root from Dm (a more sad tone) to G for example, or have the same chords but changing the rhythm a bit - I think there are things "artists" of all sorts do that's kinda mugging the audience. Besides performing, I've watched a lot of film, music, comedy, etc., and I'm not talking self-indulgence either, which is fine, an artist should do whatever they want, but a viewer should also say how they feel.

No, two lesbians, and it wasn't "Warm is the Bluest Color" which I saw as well.

I remember many years ago, the only thing I heard about "Basic Instinct 2" was "You get to see Sharon Stone's vagina for 2 seconds" - people are being titilated and used, and I'm sure it sold well, but that's never been the measure for me. A few weeks I was talking to a friend about $ and film, and we looked up the Top 50 Grossing Films ever, and they are in no way the BEST 50 movies, or even close and I remember quite a lot that were junk.

I hate censorship, I love the freedom, but discretion would be nice.

Isn't it just like the news? All they care is for you to keep watching, edge of your seat, using fear and not what's going on necessarily. "Gotchya" moments, 5-second sound clips, baiting and trolling, gossip, making our lives and our world so trivial.

I do love when talent becomes a triumph for good taste... When Marlon Brando is considered the best actor, it's a good sign.

"There Will Be Blood" is a great example that movies still can be great - talent isn't enough though. Lots of nepotism, and the context now is kinda out-of-whack.

Starting a reviewing session of Christmas movies for the next three Mondays, so here's the first two:

Happy Christmas: 5/10 - Good acting, okay dialogue, boring story, and crap cinematography. Really, I wish they could have found a way to better stabilize the camera. On the flip-side, adored every scene with Kendrick and Lynskey acting together!

Kirk Cameron's Saving Christmas: 1/10 - What the heck did I watch here? Bad acting, terrible dialogue, non-existent story, and at least 90% of the lines were given to one character when there was a cast of 20+. I was ready to tell Kirk Cameron to shut up, and I have nothing against him! The only thing I can say that is nice is "they tried"; by that, I mean they tried to make everything Christmas-y sound okay for Christians to use, from Christmas trees to Santa Claus. However, I think this would've worked better for a Christian tv show episode, as long as they cut out the Christmas party bits.

The one thing I didn't like about this highly acclaimed documentary about the Vietnam War was it's anti-American point of view. Other than that, it has everything I look for in a documentary; footage, interviews, and added touches from the director for dramatic effect. The footage is real heavy hitting stuff; powerful, disturbing, and at times awe-inspiring.

Signs (2002)

I don't think this film deserved the poor reviews that some gave it. I've only seen 3 of Night Shylaman's films (6th Sense, Unbreakable) and this one is the most sophisticated in my mind in terms of the director manipulating the viewers into seeing and believing what he wants you to believe.

Don't go to "Signs" expecting a monster movie, or a shock ending. COZ IT IS NOT !!!
Don't watch any trailer, don't read any critic and just watch it. You will enjoy it for sure.
This was the absolutely best suspense/horror movie I've seen in ages. It kept me on the edge of my seat, and when I thought I would pass out from holding my breath, the director popped in an hysterical moment. I highly recommend you see this movie.

Domestic abuse, BDSM, or just some good 'ole romantic banter?

The couple of flashes of brilliance by Lang can't redeem this confused piece of propaganda. A kid sidekick was pushing it, but the forced love interest with the laughable accent turned it into an ABC Family Original. Begrudgingly scrapping my plans for an Indiana Jones-Fugitive-Pretty Woman crossover. Still, you learn more watching a legend fail than watching lesser directors succeed.

This "Disney" movie is most definitely the worst in the classics line thus far (at least the early "package films" had some charm) and I know there is Chicken Little coming next, which I heard should be a failure as well, but let's see. Right now I can't picture much worse to be honest...

Creed - 2015

Was really wanting to see this. I am really rooting for Coogler to do well as we are roughly the same age and ex NCAA athletes. Inspiring what he is doing. Anyways I was never a big Rocky guy but I've seen a few of them. I always thought Apollo Creed was cool. I didn't have much hope from it when Coogler was first talking about the project, seemed like a tired idea, don't think many people were to excited. However, it is a testament to Coogler's talent that he reinvigorate the franchise and Stallone. Coogler said it was inspired by his dad who was a big Rocky fan, so it seemed to come from a genuine place. It pays tribute to the past Rocky films but it never relies on it, making it fully it's own movie separate from the others. He took Rocky and modernized it. As I said I was never really a big Rocky guy but Stallone and Coogler made me care for Rocky like he was a beloved character to me. Stallone should get nominated for an Oscar and I think MBJ should too but he might get overlooked. Hopefully Coogler gets nominated but not likely.

It has it's pitfalls like pretty much every sports movie. His rise was as realistic as you could make it but still not likely. The love interest was nothing revolutionary, Tessa Thompson did well with what she was given. She was just kinda there though. But the direction was just outstanding. There are two big fights and each one was filmed beautifully. The first one is just one beautiful take, at least it's shot as one. Then the last 2/3 of the film you are absolutely immersed in it. I heard people gasping and crying. That is an accomplishment in a movie where everyone pretty much knows whats happening.

Anyways it feels like they set it up for a couple sequels if they wanted too. I think Coogler will at least do 1 more down the road maybe a trilogy. Highly recommended if you liked the Rocky films even if you didn't and just like a good flick.

Boy Meets Girl is a series of vignettes about youth and longing shot in crisp black and white. Having only watched one other Carax picture, earlier this week for that matter, I want to say that his current filmography is book-ended by similar works. Holy Motors is also a sketchbook though less grounded in reality and more concerned with identity. Both have left me in admiration for Carax's personal vision and capabilities as a director. Both have failed to draw me in any closer than an arm's length. Neither have dissuaded me from further attempts.

Overall, very good.

This is a very well-made film with great performances and a great story...up to a point.

At the beginning of the film, we're introduced to the teacher (Mr. Hundert) who kinda recapitulates one year of him teaching a class in St-Benedict's school. By the end of the movie, the point of the movie switches from Mr. Hundert's year of teaching to Mr. Hundert's life, to his little struggle with Sedgewick Bell and when we're waiting for an ending that has to do with those two, we get an ending with a character that wasn't that important and that was kinda forced in some scenes.

The plot itself was a good idea but I feel some stuff was missing to make it more interesting. The acting itself was very good especially by Kelvin Kline as Mr. Hundert. There was no CGI in this movie (which is a good thing) but a lot of interesting things or sub-plots are abandoned when they could've been very interesting. I still liked the before-ending since it was very anti-cliché. There were also a few other scenes that were like that.

Overall, this movie was very good with still a few flaws but doesn't give a major disappointment. I give it a rating_4

Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors 4

Viewed in the worst quality imaginable and still thought the movie was breathtaking. This film has such a wide range of visual motifs and textures, and features some of the best camerawork and mise en scene I've ever seen. It's a visual feast from the first frame til' the very last. It has this rough, earthliness to it; as if this was a film shot and directed by the late and great Aleksei German. Hard to be a God must have taken some inspiration from this, I'm almost certain of that.

Hopefully this gets a restoration some time soon. It baffles me how films such as this are neglected by time, but every Wes Anderson flick is released on Criterion.

Inherent Vice
This movie was pretty good. It was a bit confusing at times, but good nonetheless. I feel like it's similar to the Big Lebowski in the sense that it's character driven and wouldn't be the same without Doc's reactions to things. I still don't know how to do the popcorn thing so I'll use stars.

3.5/5 Stars

Totally agree, VERY character driven and a re-watch is a necessity. Can't remember what I rated it, but did enjoy it.

Speaking of ratings here's how to do the popcorn rating. TYPE: [ rating] insert number here, include decimal when necessary [/ rating] and just get rid of all the "spaces" and you're good to go.

You guys gave all this praise to bittersweet life - i should know better than to trust anything I read on the internet. This movie was pretty boring and the action scenes weren't very good either. Not bad but not good either, i certainly wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

Super 8 - 2

The high point of the film was

seeing the kids' finished film during the credits

Funny thing is, this movie was actually filmed in the town right next to mine, I was so tempted to try and get on set to meet Abrams and some of the other cast but I was too lazy to leave my house. Some people I went to school with are extras in the movie and you can spot some of them. (My cousin's friend was the main kid's stunt double) I didn't hate the film when I saw it (I'd still give it like a 3), but I remember opening night me and my friends were gonna see it but it was sold out so I had to sit through Kung Fu Panda 2....I was pissed...

Death Becomes Her (1992)

3.5

Bruce Willis plays a plastic surgeon and schmuck, who is caught between two fierce long time rivals played by Goldie Hawn and Meryl Streep. Isabella Rossellini plays a mysterious woman, who has a magic potion that can provide the two women with the fountain of youth they crave.

There's a lot of star power here between the actors and director Robert Zemeckis. The movie won the Academy Award for best visual effects, but I felt it would have been better if those effects were a little more limited. It's a very entertaining movie, and I was surprised at how much I laughed. My favorite part of it was watching the Bruce Willis character being beat down by his involvement with the two women, and there are some nice, odd touches. I liked the fantasy aspect, but I would have been happier if that part of it was a little more subtle at times. As a black comedy, it succeeds.

Chicken Little (2005)

http://www.tamiltwists.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/large_aUkxxzFAko11Bl4yjmZECzEiXg2.jpg

There was once a great star named Disney, but now ladies and gentlemen, it has fallen from the sky...

Before watching this my expectations were literally scraping the ground and I almost chickened out of even watching the film. I had just put myself through heroic dairy cows and arrogant horses in 'Home on the Range', but I guess I just needed to jump back up on that saddle and watch the whole thing as just another moovie. After all, you can't*make a film without breaking a few eggs (or however it goes); only this seemed to break everything good left in Disney. Well, all I can say is this one didn't come out sunny side up that's for sure...

On one side, this movie is sweet, innocent, entertaining and kind of cute. But that would be the one-dimensional side of things only. The main problem with 'Chicken Little' is the story, themes and morals. Not one of these add up to much good, neither are we presented with something new or exciting. The story is arguably the most surprising element about this film, but mostly meant in a bad way, and it comes across as a confused mess with humor that struggles to deliver even a few chuckles. The story heads in many different directions throughout, all build around the same simple and underdeveloped script, which seems to be written by someone who had their brains scrambled beforehand. The world-building is weird and everything about this film feels like anything but Disney to be honest.

To sum it all up, there is just no meat on this chicken, it feels overstuffed, undercooked and anything but light as a feather - actually more like heavy as a pentagonally shaped highly advanced metallic piece of colorful machinery that can fly, fall and camoflage... If non of that made much sense, you should see the actual movie...

I love the cast, I love the gangster crew and Kevin Bacon as the good guy is very nice. James Wan direction is good as usual and many scenes were awesome (I think about one in particular in the bar). It's not the usual James Wan flick but I do like the action approach of him and it's WAY better than his last movie Furious 7. The ending was good but not great. Out of the Furnace

I wanted to like this so bad. Christian Bale + Woody Harrellson + Director of Black Mass and I figured it'd be a badass movie. I couldn't connect with the characters outside of Christian Bale. I will admit that the
letter than Affleck wrote before he died was a pretty intense scene, but outside of that it just felt dry.

The whole revenge plot doesn't start until 1 hr and 25 mins in and nothing really happens until the very last 10 mins, but it felt realistic. I wondered why Bale didn't
snipe Woody while he was running to the Mill, instead of following him and risking getting killed. But that would have made it a really anti-climatic end I guess

Certainly not a terrible movie, but just not one that's great. Bale's performance is pretty good, but I wouldn't consider it memorable in any way. The rest of the cast outside of Casey Affleck and Woody felt wasted. Zoe Saldana was basically just a filler outside of a really powerful scene on a bridge (i think? sorry, i saw this 2 days ago and forgot a few things.) Forest Whitaker was just there as well.

Really would like to say more about this but unfortunately I don't have the time but I thought this was really good. Refreshing to get a new horror that I could really get into. The Carpenter-esque score was great and it was gorgeously shot. I do however agree with what Tarantino said about the film, it could have been much better and I didn't really like the beach scene but other than that I thought it was a throwback to the good old days of horror.

Stromboli - 4/10

Bad writing, not a good story, redundant, bad pace. 100 minutes seemed so long, you only get one chance, do the best job you can, don't waste so much time cleaning the house, screaming to god the same line over and over, alternating every 3 scenes with a "I can't stand it here". The movie really doesn't start until she shows dissatisfaction for her man to only have 19,000 lira.... It got painful I had to take an extra painkiller, didn't help much.

Neo-realism is my favorite genre, and I think Ingrid is a beautiful woman (though I usually prefer the pretty girl next door), and I didn't like her character - a woman who has no scruples, materialist.

I think Rosselini just wanted to see Ingrid Bergman up close. It was nice seeing her well-defined butt, and as the film goes on, the performance of her boobs keep get better and better, very persistent, even more convincing. I believed them. Best Supporting role material. This could have made a good porno movie - just Ingrid jumping and yelling silently near the volcano.

The Quiet Man (1952)

This was my first time watching this movie all at once and it was an extremely enjoyable experience. John Wayne plays a different type of role in this as a Irishman who returns to his Ireland village after years in the U.S. He fits right in even after all these years, and is welcomed by almost everyone. He sees Maureen O'Hara and the two are instantly smitten with each other. They want to court, according to old Irish custom, but her bull-headed brother (Victor McLaglen) stands in the way. The old Irish customs begin to irk Wayne, and he finds himself at odds with O'Hara and McLaglen. There's loads of humor, beautiful Irish scenery (except for the back-screen shots filmed in Los Angeles), beautiful Maureen O'Hara, a very funny Barry Fitzgerald, a stoic Ward Bond, a nice, low-key Wayne (for most of the picture, except where he fights, and when he manhandles O'Hara), and a brutish but funny McLaglen. All directed with finesse by the great John Ford.

It took me a few minutes after the credits started rolling for me to process it and ultimately get it. Not a bad film. Jake Gyllenhaal is really good in this movie and if you haven't seen it I'd say see it just simply to see good a performance from him. It may take some a couple of times watching it to get it. It shows the ultimate story point through visuals instead of just dumbing it down for the audience to get and I find it fascinating when a film does this as it actually makes the audience think.

The main subject is weird and kind of disturbing but it's well demonstrate and well approach by the director. Kevin Bacon is excellent in the role of the main actor and I truly believe that it's his best role I've seen him play. Knife in the Water (1962) 4
http://i.imgur.com/XaqSTT7.jpg

A nameless leather tramp bums a ride from an older, married couple in the midst of a quarrel. Andrzej, an aging sportswriter, invites the young man for a day out to sea under the guise of a nautical education intending to assert himself as the superior man. The husband and the hitchhiker lock horns as their resentment for one another boils over. The wife and boat share a name and a role as spoils for the victor.

Knife in the Water is a struggle between the arrogance of youth and the wisdom of age as well as an often tense examination of masculinity and the competition that it breeds. On the cusp of 30, Polanski's debut feature is a very personal conflict put to screen, its resolution a middle finger to his future.

I'll need to view this one more attentively sometime in the future. At times I struggled to keep up with all the characters and plot-lines. Still, I can't deny the power this film holds over the viewer. This is a film imbued with an underlying sense of pain, loss, and tragedy. It shows the suffering of a small family, but in a way, the suffering of the entire nation of Taiwan.

A Hole in the Head (1959)

Fairly entertaining Frank Sinatra movie, where Frankie runs a Miami Beach hotel and cares for his young son after the mom's death. He has a habit of being unable to hold onto money and is in danger of being evicted from his own hotel due to late payments. He goes through various avenues of trying to get the money, none of which are very successful...I say very which implies that one way is almost successful and it is almost, but about it I will say no more. Edward G. Robinson plays Frank's brother, who, along with his wife (Thelma Ritter) come to Miami, ostensibly to help him, but Robinson is really there to lord it over Frank on how irresponsible he is and how they intend to take his son away. Carolyn Jones (Morticia of "The Addams Family") is Frank's wild, flighty girlfriend and she is some kind of beautiful and does a fine job playing the eccentric woman. Eleanor Parker has fairly high billing but not a very big part in the movie. Still, it's an important part. Eddie Hodges makes his film debut as Sinatra's young son. And Keenan Wynn rounds out the main cast as an old pal of Frank's. This is directed by Frank Capra, but is nowhere near his best work. Sinatra and Hodges, despite this not being a musical, sing the famous hit, "High Hopes." A passable, fun flick, but by no means a must-see unless you're a Sinatra or Capra completest.

It's a kind of rap musical film with the two French rappers Orelsan and Gringe (the "Casseurs Flowters"). I'm a huge fan of Orelsan and I haven't been disappointed. This film is not interesting for the cinematography, the "mise-en-scène" but for its spirit : its a good and authentic portrait of the (French) youth, a mediocre and desperate youth (unemployment, procrastination, alcoholism...) with a lot of irony and melancholy. I think it's pretty close to the spirit of Michel Houellebecq (and a novel like Whatever for instance).

I first saw it when it comes out in theater and I don't remember it was so bad... wow man what a pointless sequel. only two or three Bughuul appearance and some idiot characters destroy the entire movie. The only character I like is James Ransone in spite of him the movie is a total mess. Without Scott Derrickson and Ethan Hawke at the lead role I knew that the movie where going to be less good than the first one but certainly not in that way. King of New York 4

One of best films to come out during the 90's. Ferrara paints a dark picture, a world in a perpetual state of decay. The line between "good" and "bad" becomes blurred. There are no heroes or good-guys; just men who do what they believe is right.

One of the most haunting endings I've ever seen.

Ellen Page plays a high school girl who gets in with a group of young homeless people with various issues. I thought this movie was going in the direction of something like Kids, or another Larry Clarke type of film. It gets a little weirder than that, as the group turns out to be cult-like. It's a low budget, independent film, which I like, but it never really drew me in. It felt to me like a rough after school special. Not a bad recommendation to me by Zotis, as it is on the track to my kind of movie. It just didn't quite work out, although it was decent enough for me to consider it a worthwhile viewing.

Terminator Genisys

http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcToT_BFrHTP-ivud58j1X8mNRxpwSdJpDM6rGUMjySDpzQr7_pg

Overall, really disappointing.

Ok, let's get something straight here: by the end of watching the spoiling trailers and reading the sucky reviews, I wasn't even gonna watch this movie to appreciate it. All I liked from what they showed in the trailers was the visuals. Not the CGI (which is overly used in this movie), but more like the cinematography and the colors...y'all know, the looks of this film. I wanted to watch it only for ENTERTAINMENT.

Turns out it's just another sh*tty movie that, when you think about it...actually not even when you think about it, doesn't make any sense at all since its overused time-travelling plot ends up making no sense.

Let's talk about the movie itself now...phew. First of all, like mentioned, the plot ends up leading to nothing since it goes from "let's send Kyle Reese back in time to protect my mom" to "Oh! The mom knows everything (and more) already! Let's forget about the other thing then and let's expose her by attacking the entire system on 3 against 1 that's almost indestructible". There's even this scene where father, mother and son (with almost all the same age) are at the same time...I mean...What The F*ck?!? There are a few appreciable scenes with practical effects, but they are ruined almost immediately by the next scene which is almost only CGI. Some CGI was still pretty good looking, but some was just too evident and other takes were just FUGLY!!!

The acting is not that bad, especially, and surprisingly, by Arnie. What I still don't understand, is that Universal spoiled the whole underground scene where it is revealed that John Connor is in fact a terminator...or a machine...anyway, and still they tried to make us think he was really THE John Connor by making parts of the scene emotional...or at least they tried.

To wrap this up, by far the best scenes are 1. The bridge chase scene and 2. When Emilia Clarke has to get naked to travel in time...I mean they show nothing...but still it was better than the movie. This is definitely one of the worst movies I've seen this year, so I give it a rating_2

Overall, even the classics aren't as good as one would normally think.

All that's good in this movie are the animation and the voice-overs. That's it.

Everybody here must know who Tintin is and they should know that it's a literature classic. The 2011 movie was, for me, fantastic since they got to blend a whole lot of elements from the different books, I'm talking about the story the same as the elements used, and still managing to stay true to the original content.

In this movie, the storyline is changed drastically and in a very sh*tty way. There are important elements that just got wiped out and some sucky elements added here and there. Somehow, at the end, Zorrino gets his life pleaded for mercy by the princess who magically knows him not having shown any connection so far before.

The music kills the ambient and...so much story has been removed that one would hardly believe it's BASED on the book. There are a lot of flaws in this film, so I give it a rating_1_5

That's an example of twist for twist's sake. It only created more confusion and removed any emotional investment from the audience. An example of how not to make a twist.

3.5+

http://cdn.pastemagazine.com/www/articles/Paste_Mitchell2.jpg

This documentary is about the competitive playing of the original arcade games, specifically Donkey Kong, and also player's attempts to break the world record for highest score. The last time I played a video game was about 15 years ago when I played Ms. PAC-Man against a stripper for a drink at a gentlemen's club in Toronto. I haven't owned a video game console since the original Atari system, but there was a time when I used to play these old games at Greyhound bus stations all over America. Donkey Kong was my second favorite game, and I was very competitive when I played. Having at least some history with these games may have helped with my interest at the outset of this movie, but I think anybody would have a good time watching it. It's a fast paced, compact movie that quickly focuses on the rivalry between two players, one who becomes the rooting interest, and one who is painted as the villain. There's even a little controversy involved with a couple of the games. In the big picture, this is not important subject matter for a documentary, but it is a lot of fun to watch. Nice recommendation from HK and Iro.

I'm still not sure about this..It has the Del Toro colourful fairytale feel and that's about it - more good looks than substance. It seemed to take an age to get going and was completely preditable, but it ended quite well. Not Del Toro's best by any stretch of the imagination, but a passable attempt.

The Ridiculous 6 (2015) 2.5

I thought I was gonna hate this movie. I surprisingly didn't. It is essentially a Western Parody. It is A LOT better than A Million Ways To Die In The West I'll tell ya that much right off the bat. Though there were many times when I rolled my eyes and there were many jokes I found not funny at all. It was also weird seeing Taylor Lautner in an Adam Sandler movie. There were a lot of jokes I did find funny though. This film has been criticized for some racist jokes towards Native Americans, but I literally didn't see or hear any at all. If I did I guess they weren't memorably offensive or weren't meant to be offensive so I didn't see them that way. If people were talking about all the characters that say redskin or saying an racial slurs towards Native Americans, that is unfortunately what the West was like back then and I don't see why you'd have to sugar coat any movie or tailor it to not offend everybody. White characters are shown saying the N word a lot in movies based back when the relationship between Whites and Blacks was very tense, yet nobody is offended then are they? Let me just put it this way, nobody sets out to make a offensive or bad movie and I'm sure Sandler and the rest of his team weren't trying to offend or belittle Native Americans. They were just trying to make a comedy, which Sandler hasn't been able to do good for 10 years. Though this whole 4 picture deal with Netflix that Happy Madison films made is not over yet so let's see what happens.

Fine film. I think it can apply to all - the idea that all people are slaves/prostitutes. However, how you deal with it is can be a measure. Shows the brutal struggle of life without any sugarcoating. Stella was a character I fell in love with. At first, her beauty, and then the innocent virtue. I wish she would had a few more lines.

Pasolini is very economical - he doesn't milk a scene. When a guy jumps into the water, he won't spend 20 minutes wasting showing you his strokes, you understand, and moves on.

All of them reacting in various levels from horror to intrigue to this new adventure in their old lives.

I haven't seen Monster and I was in a fog when this was news, so this was my first look at this case. It makes great theater and I wouldn't expect anything less out of Florida. The main story is interesting enough, but then you've got Aileen lashing out at judges, "may your wife and children get raped in the ass", she's got a deadhead attorney, and then a wacko lady who adopts her. Aileen claims that out of the seven men she killed, two raped her and the other five attempted to. I believe her. The problem is that she continued to put herself into bad situations that resulted in death, without ever contacting authorities as a victim would. I can't go to a bad neighborhood at 2am every night, sit on a stoop, flash some cash, and blow people away who try to mug me over and over again. I don't believe she was a serial killer; I think she was more of a vigilante. Maybe those can be the same thing, I don't know, but I did have sympathy for her. It's just too bad that this girl ended up on the path that she did. This documentary has a lower production value, but I think it suited the case very well. I was only going to watch one Aileen Wournos documentary with the time I have left before lists are due, but I'm thirsty for another one. I'm being conservative with my rating because this is not an original, creative movie, but I loved it.

The Edukators - 9/10

I saw this the first on Sundance a few months after it was released in 2004, and probably saw it again a year after, but hadn't seen it since. It was my #1 back then (I always rank my passion).....Still great.

Young leftists against talk, and take action. But their method is very different from anything else in history. A story you've never seen before. Don't wanna say much about it. Besides the social and political stuff, there's a lot of internal questions, and among the group.

Is it really idealism or is it self-interest? Very objective movie. You hear both sides, and they both compelling.

Personally, I don't care what someone calls themselves. It's the actions that matter.

This movie never gets old. It's a part of my childhood, and it still holds up today. The adult humor is great in it along with the kid adventure. Highly recommended and if I were to make a top 100, it'd probably be on it.

Every actor and every character are highly enjoyable to watch and the storyline is so awesome that it make the movie highly entertaining. I love many scenes and I cry laughing at one time in the movie. One of the best rewatch in recent memories.

Basically a sequel to an Aileen Wournos documentary that I watched yesterday, this one focuses on about 10 years later when she's at the end of the line. More of the same, still riveting, especially her final interview before meeting "old sparky". Despite the moderate production value, I really appreciate the work of the director.

Overall...this is gonna be hard to say...

So, I've watched this movie quite some times when I was younger and I had always enjoyed it. Now, I get pissed off easily and barely smile when I watch it because of the STUPIDITY of both wet bandits and the fast transition from extremely-immature to mature Kevin went through in such little time.

When you watch the...hem..."funny" part, which is when the wet bandits get the sh*t beaten out of them, one can easily wonder: how is it that they hadn't got caught before that. I understand that for kids it may be funny, but it is completely unrealistic in its "death traps" with both bandits being dead with half the traps.

Macaulay Culkin is really dumb in this movie and is really NOT a good example in a "kids' movie". He reads porn, threatens people, wastes money, eat all the supplies and then gives an "inspiring speech" to an old man. Was that speech supposed to makes us...think he's a good kid? I mean...damn, the kid's an a**hole.

I did NOT enjoy the movie now that I'm grown up and still think that the 2nd one makes more sense. You say what you want guys, I give it a rating_1_5

I know I'm late to the party with this, but I recently watched Ridley Scott's Prometheus for the first time. I'm kind of conflicted. I think ultimately, though, it gets a 6/10.

As I was watching the movie, I wanted so badly to enjoy it, and I even did for the most part. But there were just so many elements to it that really detracted from the story. I've heard there was a lot of studio interference, and as a result the final product was a jumbled, confused mess.

I really hope the upcoming films can set the Alien franchise back on track.

Harry and Tonto (Director Commentary) - 10/10

It was bittersweet watching this. I can't explore this film any further, but it was nice of Paul Mazursky to talk about it. Learned a couple of things, I'd recommend it. It's crazy that the word "****" made it Rated-R, which could account for some lost business, but in the DVD, they dub in "bitch" instead anyway. I was a little surprised this movie only cost $940,000 considering the amazing cast - Art Carney, Ellen Burstyn, Larry Hagman, Geraldine Fitzgerald. The only wish I had for this picture is for more to watch it. It's my favorite and to me it's perfect.

This movie is a very good example of why I hate rating documentaries. In the beginning, I thought it was going to put me to sleep, but by the end, I was thinking this is probably a grand film. I don't think I was prepared for it at all. A guy looks back at growing up in Winnipeg through narration and reenactment. That's about it, but it's how it's presented that makes it unique. I almost question if this is actually a documentary with some of the fantastical elements, but then I'm not certain as to what qualities a film needs to be labeled as such. It's unique, haunting, and surprisingly funny.

Decided to revisit this film since it was one of my childhood favorites. Now that I'm older, it's a pretty silly movie with a weak script, bad acting, and a lot of clichés. On the bright side, it does have a fairly good musical score by John Williams.

I seriously thought the sequel of the Taken series would bring something more to the table. Turns out it really didn't. Even if I enjoyed watching it, I can't say it was a good movie.

I stumbled upon this indie film while browsing Netflix and I seriously didn't expect much. However, I must admit that even if the budget for this movie was clearly low, the directors did something pretty interesting with it. The storyline is original, and I definitely didn't expect the ending. Even if the special effects were not amazing and the acting was okay, I still had a lot of fun watching this movie.

Sometimes, a movie you didn't even want to watch ends up being something you want to rewatch as soon as the credits roll. And Ex Machina definitely falls into that category. First of all, I immediately fell in love with the director's way of telling a story, as he starts the movie the way you start a dream : as if you jumped right in the middle of it, without knowing what happened earlier on. The acting was also superb, and the storyline really original. I particularly loved the ending, even if I would have ended the movie 5 minutes earlier. Overall, this is an amazing movie, and one that I certainly will re-watch really soon.

This is another movie I watched after stumbling upon it on Netflix. Once again, I didn't expect anything at all from this movie, but was left pretty impressed with what the director accomplished in it. Even if the storyline is particularly simple, the way it is told makes it full and unique. The ending is also very interesting and leaves the viewer with a lot of questions, something I always enjoy in cinema. The acting is also pretty good.

Brick (2005)

Excellent film noir that is unique in that it's set among a group of high school students. Brendan (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) hears that his ex-girlfriend is in trouble and when he approaches her she tells him to stay away. She ends up dead right after. So Brendan involves himself by infiltrating the high school criminal underground, which immediately lands him in trouble. He mingles among many unsavory characters in his pursuit of the truth. He takes many beatings and applies a few of his own.

Gordon-Levitt is basically playing the detective role, Lukas Haas plays the heavy gangster-type named The Pin, Noah Fleiss is the enforcer-type muscle named Tugg, Matt O'Leary is Brendan's smart friend named, naturally, Brain, and beautiful Nora Zehetner plays the femme fatale role of Laura.

A truly great film, with unique hard-boiled detective-type dialogue all the way through that has its own life and is great to listen to. It's a murder mystery but so much more. The acting is great by all involved. See this one if you like to try different stuff.

Despite being the Greek director's English language debut, The Lobster (2015) defies the odds by wholy retaining his pitch black humor, surreal sensibilities, and emotional repression. The endless comparisons to the Coen Brothers, Wes Anderson, Charlie Kaufman etc. are easy to make and should be taken as a testament to the scale and execution of his unique vision.

The 2nd half was much better than the first, but wow that was just too long. I can't say that there was "filler" as the reason it was too long, because it all should have been put in there, but it was hard to stay watching for its runtime. Like every Fincher movie I have ever seen, there is outstanding camerawork, bleak storytelling, and a great cast giving their best performances. It is very well done and I am glad I watched it. This might be one of my least favorite David Fincher films, but by god it was not bad at all. He shows again that he is a great director.

The Drop(2014):

Director - Michaël R. Roskam
Cast - Tom Hardy, James Gandolfini, Noomi Rapace.

Probably the tenth time I've watched this, the pacing and atmosphere are awesome and are akin to Killing Them Softly, which I also liked a lot. Plot centers around a drop bar in Brooklyn called Cousin Marv's(Place for the mob to launder and compile money from betting and other activities) which is run by it's namesake Cousin Marv(James Gandolfini) assisted by Bob(Tom Hardy) The film deals with the relationships of people in themes of greed, corruption and eventually redemption. I see this as a very fitting crown on James Gandolfini's film legacy, definitely one that he would have been proud of. Gandolfini and Hardy worked well together, sad to say it will never happen again.

It's a beautiful and touching documentary about the deaf community. There are several interviews in sign language subtitled in French, the sign language is so beautiful to see. It's so fascinating! Dope - 3

Fairly standard coming-of-age hood film that has just enough personality to make up for it.

Only my 3rd Kiarostami but after watching this I can begin to see why he's so highly regarded. Absolutely superb!

Macaulay Culkin isn't a good actor, and he wasn't even a cute kid.
Michael Jackson didn't think so.;)

The Intern

Nancy Meyers' movies aren't my cup of tea but I have to admit this was pretty decent. It was more dramatic than I expected and really liked the relationship and chemistry between De Niro and Hathaway.

- This movie is so d*mn excellent... it totally change my mind about the capital punishment. I rarely see better acting than that during the 10 years I've been watching movie... Both Sean Penn and Susan Sarandon are great. I love every part in the prison and the dialogue between these two was amazing. The scenes when Sarandon go see the families of the young couple are fantastic and you see the difference between the poor and the rich. Penn's familly didn't have any money to pay for a good lawyer and his partner in the murder of the couple have enough money to avoid the capital punishment. I cry during at least 10min because of the ending and this movie is brilliant and perfect.

LOVED it! It has the classic Star Wars atmosphere, it was extremely intense and it's a freaking spectacle to watch. This film is exactly what it should have been. I'm not going to say much more, as I think it's best for people to just go and see it without knowing anything.
The hype is real, though. It's really really good!

Attack of the Clones

So much better than the first one. I am honestly impressed at how good this was. I was going in thinking it'd be as bad as the first because that's what people have said, but wow it was much much better. There were some parts that honestly were really good, like the Geonosis battle and how Palpatine is slowly gaining power in the Senate. It's kind of a sh*tty version of House of Cards lol. Either way this was much better than expected but the acting, dialogue, and cgi-fest still makes it a pretty average/mediocre movie.
