If you're looking for the facts on the life of Fanny Brice, this is not the place to find them, but if you're looking for a richly entertaining musical, get your fill here. This film features maybe the most incredible film debut in history with Barbra Streisand's Oscar-winning performance as Fanny Brice...the ease and power with which she commands the screen completely belies the fact that this was her very first movie. She is in practically every frame of the movie and never once makes you regret it.

Billy Wilder took home three Oscars in 1961 for this 1960 Best Picture Oscar winner which he produced, co-wrote, and directed. This slick and edgy tale of corporate and sexual politics is still razor sharp and masterfully directed and as for the performances...Jack Lemmon's performance was #1 on my list of favorite performances of his and Shirley MacLaine was robbed of the Best actress Oscar, in the performance of her career. Jack Kruschen received a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his compassionate doctor, but that nomination really should have gone to Fred MacMurray, cast radically against type in his best performance ever as the slimy JD Sheldrake. And don't sleep on Ray Walston and Edie Adams either. Everything works here.

Easily the most acclaimed Scorsese/DeNiro collaboration, this is powerhouse moviemaking...a haunting and angry look at PTSD, loneliness, and alienation that scratches at the gut long after the credits roll. I've talked in many reviews about films that provide the "midnight to dawn" atmosphere of New York City, but no film ever did it better than this one. Love the scene with Scorsese as the husband planning to kill his cheating spouse and Travis' encounter with the secret service agent. Another movie staple this one did better than anything was the "suiting up" sequences...the scenes of Travis preparing for his mission...the preparing of the guns and holsters, the taping of the knives to his boots, the practicing drawing his weapons...absolutely mesmerizing. Scorsese, DeNiro, Jodie Foster. and especially Bernard Hermann were ALL robbed of Oscars for their work here...Scorsese wasn't even nominated! WTF? Though I find the ending a little troubling, this is still the cinematic marvel it was in 1976.

Don't ask me why but I watched the first 4 parts of Friday the 13th over the weekend.
There's no point in rating these, really - to me, they're all essentially the same thing on endless repeat. The first one gets the edge for being slightly more interesting because it was the first, and the shtick was new - I guess. After that, they all just blur in my mind into one monotonous routine with interchangeable annoying teenagers getting killed in a bunch of boring ways.

I don't see anywhere that labels this as a noir, but that's exactly what it was as far as I'm concerned. It's the earliest I've seen and the first since I've been prepping for the Pre-30's Countdown. There were points that seemed like time was standing still, but otherwise it was a very good flick.
Jeez, that Betty Amann was gorgeous!

I'm sure most won't care, and the rest would rather say nothing, but I wish each movie = each post.. If someone posts two movies, I might love one, and dislike the other, and as much as I want to show my love for one movie, I think its misleading if I were to give it a THUMBS UP, because I don't want people on here mixing up what I like/dislike.

Boring, manipulative, and frankly racist the entire story moves in one direction and then we get the twist and it's just stupid and uninspired.

Oh yeah, I meant it in the way that it didn’t feel like a PG-13 movie at all. I could have seen this being Rated R to be honest.
That's what I thought you meant. I probably didn't word my response very well. I was expecting the film to be quite tame, given the target demographic of the books. So I'm surprised that it's supposedly pushing the upper limits of PG-13 and not playing it overly safe to cater to a younger audience.

i fond the real story long time ago, when the subject interested me for the wrong reasons
they changed the events to be more plot wise, they have to sell the film obviously
i actually liked those changes, about him finding a family and having change for them
what really surprised me back then and now was the level of commitment that group had
most skinhead groups are filled with rhetorical, actually intelligent people, violence is an adding
that's what you get when you don't fell a connection with anything or anyone in the world,
you look at yourself and the only thing you see connecting you with a group is the color of your skin
and the thing we most want is connection, is belonging to something and they hunt for this people
could be religion, like isis. for this people to do crazy thing's all it takes is a little push, like gravity
getting away after this level of commitment is difficult, very difficult, but the most rewarding
the film is not at the level of the believer for instance, but jamie bell looks great, very legit

Woman on the Run (1950)
A good noir that I'd never before seen, directed by the Orson Welles' protege, Norman Foster, starring Anne Sheridan and Dennis O'Keefe, with reliable portrayals by Ross Elliot, Robert Keith and Frank Jenks.
The film had been beautifully restored by the UCLA Film & Television Archive, so the Hitchcockian type features of various San Fransisco landmarks are very vivid.
The title is misleading, for it's really a man who is on the run, after witnessing a murder. The story has an unusual twist early on, so the viewer is treated to some knowing suspense throughout the picture. It was also interesting to see the va-va voom Ann Sheridan dressed in a rather frumpy topcoat for the entire movie!
This was an unusual independent production in the era where the big studios still reigned supreme. It's a nice find, and most cinephiles would enjoy watching it for its historical value as well as for its noir drama.
Doc's rating: 7/10

Gary Ross produced, directed and co-wrote this cinematic fantasy which is nothing short of magical. Tobey Maguire and Reese Witherspoon play contemporary teen siblings who magically zapped into the middle of a 1950's sitcom. This film initial provides major laughs and then takes a dark turn providing important messages about bigotry and freedom of speech among other things before rebounding for a spectacular finale. The cast is amazing...JT Walsh in a comic variation on the villains he's known for, William H. Macy as the befuddled sitcom dad, Jeff Daniels as the confused owner of the malt shop, and best of all, Joan Allen, luminous as the sitcom mom, a performance that should have earned her an Oscar nomination. A truly one-of-kind movie experience.

'After Life' (1998)
Dir.: Hirokazu Kore-eda
https://i.imgur.com/B29d39a.gif
The Synopsis of this film states: "After death, people have just one week to choose only a memory to keep for eternity."
Only a handful of directors could have accomplished this film, of which Kore-eda is one. It's a masterful observation on what it is to be human, what we make of our time on this planet and what we leave behind. The recently deceased are interviewed by a panel, to share their favourite memory in life, before they can move on into the afterlife.
The film evokes memories of Bergman movies, and is almost like a Dogme film in terms of production. It also has a touch of Kurosawa about it and no doubt Ozu (who I shamefully haven't seen anywhere near enough of). The cast is presumably made up from both actors and real life people, who are just simply trying to convey their brightest, happiest memories on camera. It works remarkably well in terms of a docu-film style for the first hour or so, then the plot moves on to reveal how the panel are also involved.
It's a pretty ingenious idea from Kore-eda who was making only his 2nd feature. He was a documentary maker before his features, so some of that experience no doubt crossed over into this project. And while it's a very one dimensional film (the setting and tone is constant throughout), Kore-eda nails down the humanism and naturalistic beauty of what it is to be alive.
There is one tiny moment in which an elderly woman recalls caring for her brother just before his death, where she wells up and is overcome with emotion - and that realness, captured and turned into film by Kore-eda is just jaw droppingly moving and brilliant. This is a film that not only shows how scared Kore-eda is of amnesia, loss of feeling and emotion but also truly shows how in tune Kore-eda is with all of it and how he is able to convey it all to us in 2 hours.

Whit Stillman's Metropolitan, first thing I'v ever seen by him as the idea of a WASP Woodley Allen didn't really seem that appealing but I admit I really enjoyed this and it does offer something beyond aping Allen's style. Very self aware as with Allen but it takes the form more of the lead character being deliberately over intellectual and stilted. Besides that a very strong cast with Chris Eigeman especially making me wonder why he didn't become better known back in the 90's.

Today was my 10th wedding anniversary. My wife had been wanting to show me Field of Dreams because I had never seen it (I am not generally a fan of Kevin Costner (but I love the last 30 minutes of Draft Day)). Anyways, I really loved it. The movie was o.k. and then James Earl Jones showed up. His character's story, The Doctor's story and then Kevin Costner's story all tied up together in an amazing intertwining bow that was phenomenal. I loved the movie and I wished that they still made movies with such heart these days.

Not quite sure why the reviews and ratings of this are so low. Is it because they expected Bill Murray to do 1 hour and 45 minutes of one liners? It's typical Jarmusch aloofness and he does it well. He's great at nailing down the character traits early on. Adam Driver is especially good with his dry, matter of fact, nonchalant dialogue.
I found it pretty hilarious in parts. There are clear nods to Trump, climate change and materialistic throwaway culture and there are lots of tributes to films and directors. Iggy Pop's character is called Samuel M Fuller, and the motel owner was called Perkins!
It is oddly meta in places and there isn't a strong ending, but it's worth a watch.

i can't say how much i loved this film, i can't
one of my all time jarmusch favorites, the favorite maybe
i loved new york one, was beyond hilarious and entertaining
one of my favorite scenes of all time was in the new york segment,
helmut puts the clown nose and yoyo says right and he goes left,
then we see brooklin and helmut looks scared and removes the nose
that scene is the most unique and wonderful example of transformation
from pure joy and a state of glad for have laughed with the character
to pure genuine sadness for seeing him lose that laughter and be scared
is like a child we never want to see cry, and be scared, we can't stand it
because they remind us of what we should all be or strive to be
the french one is also very funny and immensely interesting
i'd love the los angeles segment if i had saw this movie years earlier,
because was exactly the same chooses i made with other opportunities i had

yes, i give value to human stories
they don't have to have a lesson, just show nature
there interests, there fears, there ambitions or lack of them
ghost dog was a movie i anticipated my liking a lot
i was hoping to be something i'd be blown away
it did not. maybe because i didn't had a relation
if i think about the character it's something i fight against

The cool, calm and collective-ness of Whitaker's performance and character, the music, the ancient Japanese proverbs, poetry, the originality. And the mixture of cultures; A black American operating in an Italian-American atmosphere, living by Asian wisdom and standards.

Broken Blossoms (1919)
Surprisingly effective!...This one is heady with heartfelt emotions of despair with a dashing ray of hope illuminating the decaying urban streets. Our forlorn heroine is Lucy (Lillian Gish) a young girl born of a prostitute mother. The only person in her life is her father (Donald Crisp) a brutish boxing champ full of rage. He likes nothing more than brutally beating his daughter with a horse whip. He's one of the most vilest bad guys I've seen on film. He gave me the creeps...and my heart went out to poor little Lucy. Lucy's one chance in life is when she meets the 'yellow man', a Chinese immigrant (Richard Barthelmess) who falls for this frail flower.
The film is told as a fable and does so very effectively. It's interesting that there's a secondary theme of religion and trying to convert 'heathens' in foreign lands. There's also a unique for it's time positive view on Buddhism. We also see scenes of Chinese culture. The lead is played by a white actor, but, this was a cutting edge film in it's day as it showed interracial love on the big screen.
The movie ends as strong as it starts and stays true to it's fabled style of story telling. A must see.

"What a long, dull trip it's been" should've been the afterword. The story basically goes wherever the boy goes, and everywhere he goes is the same...a crowded gathering. There isn't much variation for a movie of this length. The film is wholly focused on the characters, though they're not memorable or interesting enough to warrant my attention or care. Their conversations are trite and mundane. There's the protagonist, the boy (Patrick Fugit). He's a newbie rock journalist trying to get a story. But he's 15-yrs-old. Apparently he can just leave school and hit the road on a bus tour with some band. I guess truancy didn't exist then. This adventurous idea was suggested by his new groupie friend (Kate Hudson), who's pretty much a drifting character. Anyhow...I don't think there's anything wrong with the boy. He's honest, humble, patient, kind-faced...which is why he doesn't fit into that scene, and why I find the character an annoyance. He's like the little brother you had to drag along with you on a date in high school—a third wheel—or the young sibling at someone's house party. You just want to tell him to go hang out with kids his own age. Maybe when he's a bit older and more forthright, he can stick around. A journalist is supposed to be assertive, even a budding one, if he or she wants to succeed that is.
The kid's mother is annoying too in a hyperbolic way. She calls her son almost every day to make sure he's not doing drugs. Even a narc officer isn't that persistent.
What I don't like most of all about this movie is that characters are stereotypical and dialogue is contrived, as if based on what someone thought the era was like. (I know it's supposedly a true story from the director's life, but maybe he wanted to conventionalize it for the screen) Let's also not forget the soundtrack, repleted with the usual collection of songs from the time. I cringed when they sang "Tiny Dancer" on the bus. Nauseating. Lester Bangs was right, rock music was already dead by then.

Shadows: The Other Window (TV, 1975) – 6/10
This was co-authored by J. B. Priestley and Jacquetta Hawkes and it's fascinating to see their combined interests reflected in the story. My memory must have had its handbrake on, because I know An Inspector Calls very well and really like it, but Priestley's name didn't register with me. I'm intrigued that he had such an interest in time and explored it in his other work.
Once again with these stories time is involved. The characters see people from history through a distorting lens fastened to the window, trying to convince the rigidly scientific father of the miracle. As with earlier episodes I felt that it might have been more suitable for the story to take place earlier in the twentieth century. The music, which is uncredited and very imposing, adds to this displacement considerably, but I'm not sure how intentional that was. Also, as in previous episodes, we're visiting a rarefied eschelon of society but the dialogue actually feels too antiquated even for them.
The child actors are quite watchable even so, and extremely competent. The language can sometimes produce an unnatural and stilted effect – Gwyneth Strong seemed to struggle with this most; she was very familiar but I didn't twig that she'd played Cassandra in Only Fools and Horses. It's funny also to see Sophie Ward at this age.
I enjoyed the central theme of this episode and it resonated with me. I was pleased that the story was able to create some unease in a couple of places but I was alert to the possibility that there could have been more. Very much feels like a classic out of its normal time and place. I'm looking forward to series 2.

Believe it or not, this is my favorite Denzel performance...playing a working class guy who takes desperate measures to get his son on a donor list for a heart transplant, Denzel commands the screen as always, but I love this performance in particular because, in a rare instance for Denzel, he's playing a regular Joe, a working class guy trying to keep a roof over his family's head and he nails it.

The 1983 Oscar winning Best Picture still provides compelling entertainment, thanks to the genius of James L. Brooks, who has crafted a tale that perfectly melds roll on the floor laughter with heartbreaking tragedy to breathtaking effect. Shirley MacLaine and Jack Nicholson's Oscar winning performances are wonderful, but with each viewing of this film, I find myself more fascinated with the work of Debra Winger as Emma...this is a performance of such freshness with nothing affected about it...you never catch her "acting'...this performance is a flawed and lovable human being that Winger loses herself in. And don't sleep on Jeff Daniels, completely winning as a truly detestable character...I think he should have gotten the Oscar nomination that went to John Lithgow.

The awesome Jen and Sylvia Soska prove they can bring amped-up brutality in an action film in the story of a detective who gets himself put in prison to seek the criminal who killed his wife. Dean Cain and Paul "Big Show" Wight are very ticked-off in this film as they go at constant odds with each other.

Night on Earth 1991
Five separate stories of five cab drivers shot on location in
Los Angeles, New York, Paris, Rome and Helsinki, all on the same night.
Well done, small indie film by Jim Jarmusch,
I thought the L.A. and Paris stories were the best ones.

Do you recommend?

NIGHT ON EARTH 1991
Thanks for your recommendation. J-C . I saw this film and glad I did. Had a zany, over the top. cutting edge feel to it, reminded me a little of early Spike Lee. But still it was a unique vision of the film maker.
I guess I liked the L.A., New York and Helsinki vignettes the best. Was laughing at first at hyper Roberto Benigni but that one story was a little too out there for me. Also, I think I'm gonna forgo the pumpkin pie this Thanksgiving. .🙄
But really did enjoy the movie and this alternative vision of the planet's universe at night. It also made me think that of all these major glorified cosmopolitan cities revealling their seamy, seething, seedy landscapes - only Helsinki looked like a pretty, well cared for village you'd want to live in. Of course that story was the most hard hitting - goosebumps ( and not just from the Finnish night) .
Btw a young Rosie Perez was absolutely hilarious - best thing in the movie was her line about what her brother in law was wearing on his head lmao.
Preposterous, hilarious, cartoonish yet poignant movie - it was a novel experience for me . And even though the 'stories ' left more questions than they answered, my interest never flagged.
Also loved the Tom Waits song at the end.
I gave it the exact same rating as you J-C

I see it as an apocalyptic film, about people saving other people in there small town community from the zombies. Those zombies are people, before they were zombies, they were people, and that should be always in your mind when you watch this movie. Jarmusch made a very intelligent approach to consumerism and environmental annihilation. He bring us to a town, a twin peaks kind of town, where people are united despite all there differences, with a strong sense of community, and the author sees it as a solution for the problem, they're the ones fighting the zombies. The movie is also political, we see a man with a hat saying "keep america white again'' and a radio broadcast bashing scientific knowledge; that can be viewed as a connotation for the current american political moment. The film narrator (Tom Waits) is a secluded man, someone that doesn't belong society, he doesn't belong to any side, neither the consumerism (zombie) side, neither to the community citizens fighting the zombies side; in the end we are lead to believe his the only survivor. We have a scottish woman who lives by old standards, the samurai codes, and the author makes the audience see her as an alien, someone not from this planet, practices that are not longer in use, the act of service, respect and discipline. We have a group of young city people passing true the town, they're welcoming by everyone despite there differences, even so, some of them show arrogance and rudeness. This is a film about people saving the planet from themselves, and in the end "everything will end badly''. The zombies din't like the movie, and they'll win and lose everything in the end.

Haunt 4.5
From the writers of A Quiet Place and producer Eli Roth comes this tale of a group of college students on Halloween night who get to experience a new "extreme" haunted house that provides more terrors than expected. It was surprisingly exciting as the lead character is a very flawed character (abusive relationship) who must find it within herself to survive along with her friends. Slow tension that leads to scares that hit you right in the throat.

The Tomorrow Man (2019)
This is not a movie for the DC comics crowd. But it is a sensitive, charming and heart warming story about two offbeat seniors who find each other, and become kindred spirits. The writing, by first time director Noble Jones is somewhat choppy, and suffers a bit from discontinuity. But it is the superlative acting by John Lithgow and Blythe Danner that grab the viewer's attention. These are two old pros who show how it's done.
The film got mediocre reviews, possibly in part due to its mature themes, along with a not-well-known first time director/writer at the helm. There is also a bit of a surprise ending that takes a little thought, but is very satisfying. Recommended for the over 40 audience, or for anyone who just wants to observe fine acting and a heart warming story.

The Crying Game (1992, rewatch) – 8/10
I must mention the opening titles: I've never been a big fan of stretching type in the way they did here. They also space the names out next to the normally-spaced job titles. At one point I was even wondering whether they were showing it in a 4:3 format and I had it on the wrong setting :).
I was laughing at the choices of music to top and tail the film – very funny. Anne Dudley's score is also good and extremely memorable.
Looking back I feel like this was a very interesting and distinctive time for film and several similar ones – if that's at all possible ;) – came to mind as I watched. The last time The Crying Game was on I was surprised at how good Forest Whitaker's accent was. Granted his character voice is quite unusual but I think it's well-observed enough to be convincing; also the character's family supposedly "moved to Tottenham" which you could infer to be from abroad rather than just from another part of the country. Miranda Richardson's also brilliant with her Northern Irish accent.
It's likely that I first saw Jaye Davidson as Ra in Stargate, where he's called upon to be androgynous, but this is a different prospect as he's required to be female. As Neil Jordan said, without Dil being a convincing woman, the character would have looked stupid. The success of the deception is astonishing, really and Davidson exudes confidence without a lot of acting experience. I also thought it was interesting how Dil and Jody use similar expressions, which makes you wonder who originated them and who is copying who.
I saw Neil Jordan's earlier film Angel (1982) again at the beginning of last year and having seen this again I still like Angel best.

Taxi Driver (1976)
An intense and grimy feeling movie that was an interesting watch. A great character study of a madman lost in loneliness with no sense of purpose in life, with a truly great performance from Robert De Niro. Loved the visuals and the acting throughout. The main theme got a bit overused to me though by the end if i had a big complaint. But that should be a compliment if that's my biggest complaint.
This had a harsh mood permeating through it that made it a bit rough of a late night viewing, but I overall enjoyed the exploration of Travis and the darkness of the night shift cabbie. I'll have to give it another watch again, but I want to let it just chill in my brain for a little first to be honest.

As others have said, I liked the first chapter of this better. The run time could have certainly been trimmed by cutting a little bit of the first act. Not Carpenter's best but still fun and enjoyable. It is silly in places but it has to be as that's the premise of the original Stephen King story. Artie’s transformation from high school nerd to deranged vamp like monster is great to watch, and there are Terminator 2 vibes with the self re-generating Plymouth Fury (hope they didn’t smash up too many of those beautiful cars). The film explores growing pains, girls and self destruction, and there are some quality lines. “God I hate Rock n’ Roll”.

Thought I would like this more than I did. It’s not poor, just that the comedy and tragedy of it all didn’t hit me for six like I wanted it to. I also thought it would have been better done in the French language with English subtitles (why is Sean Penn in it?) as it was originally written in French for a Western audience. There is an option on the Blu-Ray to switch to French audio, but then you’re not getting the original actors voices. It’s a decent portrayal of the brutal regimes that tore families apart in Iran. I just wanted more.

Romantic drama starring Josh O’Connor and Laia Costa. The script is a bit wobbly and over sentimental, and it seemed to take a very long time to dig out a plot in the middle section. The third act is where it comes together somewhat. But can’t help feeling it is a missed opportunity.

Xavier Dolan’s career has a whole host of great films and he’s still so young. This one isn’t his best. That accolade belongs to ‘Mommy’. But it is very interesting. It tells the connection of a young boy and his written correspondence to a famous heart-throb actor. It’s well constructed, with flashbacks and weaving timelines. And typically Dolan explores themes of sexuality, mental illness, mother-son dynamics and addiction. There are lots of facial close ups trying to get us inside the headspace of the characters.
Dolan knows how to ramp up a scene with needle drops. Music cues are a strength of his – and there is a fantastic night club scene which shows off his talent for this. However, there is also a scene where it doesn’t work, and a cover of Ben E King’s ‘Stand by Me’ is played over what should be an incredibly tender scene, but just feels far too melodramatic. A few mis-steps aside, it’s a film that Dolan fans will like. Perhaps love.

'The Souvenir' (2019)
https://pixel.nymag.com/imgs/daily/vulture/2019/05/09/magazine/The-Souvenir-e1550587133687-1108x0-c-default.w1200.h630.jpg
Where to start with this one. It’s odd. It has a deadpan, almost dour like delivery. It reminded me of a Yorgos Lanthimos film in terms of atmosphere and dialogue, crossed with the pace and tone of Christopher Nolan’s ‘Following’. It is a very sparse, one dimensional film that has little to no tension or action to speak of, and instead relies on a series of life lessons for the lead character Julie. The last half hour has an almost meta / documentary feel to it – and it’s at the point you realise that it is basically a Biography by Director Joanna Hogg that it all clicks.
It’s at this point you begin to ask yourself – are we seeing a slice of life in the early 80s that the Director went through? Is she Julie? Is this film that we are actually watching – the result of that experience? Instead of making a film about a boy in Sunderland, Julie is told to relate more to her actual experiences, which will mean her work will have more of a connection to her. Her privilege, her ups and downs etc. So ‘Souvenir’ seems to be literally her tale of how the film came into being. Which is a rather brilliant concept. Right down to the painting called ‘The Souvenir’ – in which a young girl (also named Julie) carves the initials of her lover into a tree.
I’d hesitate to recommend this film to anybody as it is probably a little abstract / obscure compared to your average movie. But it is one for those who like to be challenged.

Naked - 1993
3.5

No plot, the main character is the plot, the center, no lines to cross, it's a nihilistic open field, the character is naked because his not tied up to any type of moral judgmental conventions. The character actions are a mirror of his ideas, the ideas are not nihilistic, nihilistic is what he does with what he believes; what he believes i'd call it a mix of fiction, analogy and supposition. The character, johnny, played by david thewlis is something else, a dark wandering prophet, what a terrific performance. It's a beautiful film, beautiful, hard to watch and hopeless, hopeless, under-mark that, that's the most important thing about this film and it's beauty. It's a film about the fight between the sexes and environmental & social alienation. What i most enjoyed about this film was how johnny banalizes peoples feelings, he showed how much they actually meant, he ridicules his girlfriend poem and had sex with her roommate and when she says she loves him, he brutalizes her to express how irrelevant, fragile and unimportant that is. That's something most people does using other mechanisms, mike leigh's represented it in such a raw and visceral way that most people fond it shocking.

I found it very messy and overcomplicated. The fragmented timeline I found frustrating, with too many alternates. All of this for close to 2 and a half hours had me wanting it to end. Saying that, the cinematography was good, as was Leto but nowhere near enough to make me want to ever watch it again.

Adaptation of a Paul Auster novel featuring Mandy Patinkin and James Spader. Brilliant claustrophobic take on of the novel and greed and manipulation. Heavy on the allegory but great performances all round (with a healthy dose of gallows humour). James Spader is so believable as Pozzi that you just root for both our unlikely friends. Hard to mark but:

Good film. i got a bit lost a few times but the storyline with Joseph Gordon-Levitt kept it together (not to decry the subject matter).

Thank You for Smoking (2005)
Just remembered this from the post earlier today, and was in the mood for this kind of comedy, so i watched it for the first time.
An amazing satire with some downright laugh out loud hilarious moments, a great tear-down of lobbyists, the good guys, and the "bad guys" in life. Every little nuance between each of the industries was just so perfect and brought even more laughter to the whole film.
Glad I finally checked it out!

The way Almodovar weaves cycles of death and life, mothers and children, parterns and exes, leaving and returning into his narrative is extraordinary. Wonderful film.

I found it very messy and overcomplicated. The fragmented timeline I found frustrating, with too many alternates. All of this for close to 2 and a half hours had me wanting it to end. Saying that, the cinematography was good, as was Leto but nowhere near enough to make me want to ever watch it again.
I thought the same thing the first time i saw it, i didn't actually though anything, i liked the young girl by the middle of the film, she was hot. I was young, i mean, very young, my favorite movie was the green mile, i loved everything about the green mile, especially harry dean stanton, i fond it so charismatic, so unique, genuine and different, and because of that i wanted to know who he was. With him i fond a new door to buddhism, taoism and all those eastern religions ideas/philosophies. Years later i re-watched the film and was one of the most meaningful films i had ever saw, even so, it was messy and over-complicated like you said, could be simpler. I don't think anyone will enjoy this movie beyond the message he presented.

Complicated but very thought provoking movie. It's on my all-time 250 list as an honorable mention. After my first watch, I checked out some explanation and interpretation video's about it, which definitely made me appreciate the film more.

A really watcheable and engrossing account. To me, it doesn't suffer at all from the passage of time. Film and fact apart this is a powerhouse. Humble when it needs to be and strong when it has to be also. Credit to George Stevens for the direction.
For the film:

I shouldn't be advertising this, but I need to put something down here. Maybe it will get to me to start watching movies again.
It was recommended by someone with great movie taste, and the idea of older woman and younger man appealed to me. Too bad (for me).

Didn't connect with this at all. Now, in all fairness, I watched it in two segments so I'm sure I lost a bit of the flow (if there was any) but it was pretty dull. Liked the ending (the very last scene) but the previous 160 minutes I found a bit frustrating. From a technical standpoint it was outstanding. Loved the sets, cinematography, fx, etc.

Anyone who aspires to be a writer should watch adaptation by kaufman, and this. I can't imagine the humiliation and the abuses he have been true his childhood to reach the point of glorifying a lifestyle no one dares to. He successfully showed us his world and the world of the so many like him, the world without mickey mouse he so much despised. I think his the man unspoken to, watering the plant, like in his poem: love is a dog from hell.
our educational system tells us that we can all be big-ass winners. it hasn't told us about the gutters or the suicides. or the terror of one person aching in one place alone, untouched, unspoken to, watering a plant.

I liked this more than Harold Lloyd's The Freshman, but of course I expected to. This movie is a good reminder that the top 100 thrills list is just that, and not thrillers which is what I always think of. A lot of good gags here and a very easy watch.

John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum
Ugghhh. It was okay. Its honestly kinda ironic, but really sad, that the series that was such a huge breath of fresh air in such a bloated cgi nightmare landscape that is the modern action movie now ends up also becoming more bloated and cgi filled. I love the first two of these to death, but this one is a big misstep. Still much better than the alternative movie out there I guess, but so much more ridiculous scenes and way less practical effects/stunts. This isn't a sequel ramp up like from 1 to 2, this is a complete derailment of what the first two were apart from the "badass dude kills lots of people" constant it minimally required.
I now am not looking forward to this inevitable fourth film, and boy oh boy i hope it stops there at this point.

Interesting - though awfully confusing - time travel concept, unfortunately marred by amateurish execution and mediocre acting (IMO).
Usually I tend to like indie sci-fi mind-bender type flicks, but this one didn't click.

Effective little thriller with a good cast. The "something in the woodshed" is pretty predictable but the performances are strong.

Shadows: The Dark Streets of Kimball's Green (TV, 1976) – 5.5/10
The first episode of series 2, featuring a more elaborate, animated title sequence. The sequence is certainly very stark and well-made but I feel that it confined the action too much to the, then, present-day. There's something timeless about the original – a simple flickering candle – that conveys a better atmosphere and opens up more possibilities in the imagination.
This is the closest episode yet for breaking away from the patterns familiar in the first series, and – but for the resolution – it could have done so comprehensively. I found it particularly noteworthy from a social history perspective. There's a real sensation of history haunting the present as we hear the conversation about Ancient Britons while seeing images of the contemporary streets and the people living in 1976. The foster care setup brought to mind harrowing accounts of the abuse of evacuees in WWII – in fact I recently saw David Harewood's documentary about Birmingham at that time, with similarly upsetting stories recounted. The worst moment in this episode, and especially relevant today, is the social worker who can see that the foster carer is unfit, makes a weak attempt at asking the little girl whether she's happy there, and then just goes off to see the next child on the list. A cautionary tale indeed.

I'm very late seeing this, but I suppose it's still relevant given the times.... This wasn't bad, but it felt more like an extra long TV show than a movie. The racial themes were very in your face, and likely intentionally. However, it felt forced and unnatural in many moments.

I cant wait to rewatch this to see if my rating drops a bit because of the reasons you listed here. Gave it a 4/5 when I saw it in the theater, but I can see how the leads' energy level can get distracting.

Powder (1995, Victor Salva)

This actually had a pretty good cast, and some of the acting was decent. Bad news is, it was way too bland and sappy, plus I had a hard time connecting with the main character. I'm sorry but he was just annoying to no end. The plot was frustrating in that it didn't go in any of the directions that I thought would be satisfying (which, to me, is key for this type of movies). Too cliched and predictable too - from the moment I saw the wife of Lance Henriksen's character on her death bed terminally ill - and that was fairly early on - I knew Powder was going to use his supernatural powers to help him. So he did. The ending didn't help matters either, with a fantasy melodrama-type epiphany capping things off in the same bland way.
Btw, my low rating has nothing to do with the fact that the film was directed by a convicted child molester (which I didn't know prior to watching). But, even without knowing it, the "touching" scene between Powder and the teacher (Jeff Goldblum), while completely innocent and spiritual on the surface, did feel vaguely uncomfortable, and I couldn't understand why. Definitely an underlying subtext going on there - subtle but nonetheless.

2nd re-watch...Tim Burton's masterpiece about the greatest schlock movie director of all time holds up beautifully as grand entertainment. Johnny Depp should have received an Oscar nomination for his exuberant and passion-filled performance in the title role and Martin Landau's Oscar-winning performance as Bela Lugosi is funny and moving, but was he really better than Samuel L Jackson in Pulp Fiction? If the Academy wanted to honor Landau, he should have won for Crimes and Demeanors.

Bloodline (Henry Jacobson, 2019: There is a film that every actor will tend to make to break out of their typecast. Some good, some bad. This is one of the cases that it is good because "Stifler" himself, Seann William Scott, goes dark as Even Cole, a high school guidance counselor who goes unhinged after the birth of his son as he learns his students have deadbeat dads and it becomes the trigger for him to begin targeting these dads. Scott is excellent in the role and over midway, a jaw-dropping twist happens and makes the film even more watchable.

Thought I'd squeeze in a few more Pre 1930 films for the upcoming: MoFo Pre 1930s Countdown (https://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?t=59417) and the deadline is only 3 weeks away! on October 6th
I thoroughly enjoyed Show People! It's a cool, behind the scenes look at Hollywood movie making with a young actress trying to break into the flicks. Lovely Marion Davies, the woman who was lampooned in Citizen Kane....was actually very talented, especially at comedy. This is one of her best films and she's a join to watch.
Show People is a fast paced silent comedy that's only 1 hour 15 minutes long. The time flew by as I had so much fun with the movie, even more so was the fun in spotting big stars as they made cameos on the studio back lot.
Don't forget to send a list into Chyp for the Pre 30s Countdown, and if you're short a few movies, try watching Show People... rating_4

A beautifully made documentary about a truly great human being. Just when I thought this film couldn't move me any more - it goes a step further - right into the end credits.
Rogers is a man who really did seem to touch the lives of everyone he met. To the point that people even questioned if his persona was an act. Which says more about us than him.

Gotta admit, Japan choosing this as their submission for a Best Foreign-Language Oscar (as opposed to just a Best Animated Feature Oscar) is definitely a weird flex.

Last move I watched was Tyrannosaur, discovered it on Amazon Prime and thought I'd check it out as I heard a lot of positive buzz about the movie. Really enjoyed the movie, highly recommend it to anyone who's not seen it yet and into character movies.

The Last Command (Josef von Sternberg, 1928) 3.5+
Ivan idea I'm gonna have to think long and hard as to whether this makes my list for the upcoming countdown
The Wedding March (Erich von Stroheim, 1928) 3+
Too self-indulgent for my taste, doubt aisle be putting this one on that list

Good luck with that. The first one is the only legitimately good one, but the rest have their moments, I guess.

Re-watch of an excellent movie. Not for the faint of heart or the squeamish. (That would be me.)

Echo in the Canyon (2018)
Someone had mentioned this doc awhile back, perhaps lenslady. It's a rather short film (82 mins.) supposedly about the early Laurel Cayon (NW of Hollywood) music scene, but it really only features the mid-sixties early folk/rock people like Mammas/Papas, The Byrds, Buff. Springfield and a couple others.
It's hosted/narrated by Jakob Dylan (Bob's son), who unfortunately has the personality of a half glass of stale Pepsi. Yet the interviewees, like Lou Adler, Crosby, Clapton, Brian Wilson, are interesting enough, and they do manage to document the beginnings of the folk/rock movement, which then spread the world over.
The problem is that it rather holds itself out as a doc on the general Laurel Cyn music scene, but yet it leaves out a bunch of guys who lived there like John Mayall, Zappa, yours truly, early Beefheart, Eric Burdon, The Animals, and bunches of side men, among others.
They also could have done a little more with Laurel Canyon's geographical significance and position. Otherwise it's not too bad, and they do feature a fair amount of music.Doc's rating: 6/10
Child's Play (2019) - 5.5/10
Was a fan of the original versions 1 & 2, the others were good for a laugh but the newest remake is a let down for me.
