Amazing movie. Actors have performed their roles very well, In the movie as they trust and respect their king and the crown it is amazing. Soon they all might be a part of the Avengers with amazing skill and talent.

Flawed but enjoyable. The ending goes off the rails in a grotesquely unhinged way - it's ludicrous but yet perfect at the same time in its mocking depiction of the insanity of Cold War paranoia.

IMO A Patch of Blue (1965) --also with Poitier-- was braver, and a much more emotionally touching story. It featured a stunning performance by Elizabeth Hartman as a blind Cinderella type.
"Dinner" was a great last performance by Spencer Tracy", and also the last of Tracy/Hepburn's 9 films together.

BLACK PANTHER
(2018)
Praised as possibly the greatest Marvel superhero movie ever made, the movie is not up to the hype.
The underlying theme of Black Power portayed in the fictional nation of Wakanda, which symbolizes Africa as an entire continent, having the resources (Vibranium) and the brains to sustain advanced technology and strength that matches that of the superpowers of the world without relinquishing its cultural identity if it weren't for the west's exploitation is commendable.
The issue I had with the movie was how the plot was played out, the acting, and even the action sequences, none of which blew my mind away. I guess if I had seen the movie with lower expectations, I would had been a little more satisfied.
Criminally overrated.

like the cinematography, river shots as background and juxtapose, plus the weird jab commentary regard "the man that started the war" lol. the climactic moment kinda poorly build up and shoot. candidly look more like rehearsal. also overall the story not so digestable for me. strong female cast tho' especially the kotoko's lady and the legend yuko tanaka. remember vaguely see her as oshin :) what an actress. ken mitsuishi totally miscast imo for the dad's role -seriously it more like comic relief-. nice breakthrough for masaki suda, and he dare went naked and some sex scene -young, contemporaries rising star rarely do, talk image, agency etc- . still most of parts his expression still and just monotenous sullen face especially toward his dad, not yet for show much of his potential.

I would have to give this movie a decent rating based on it's technical merits alone. Beyond that, there are certainly impressive showings of bravery and emotion. It just wasn't there on a consistent basis and I couldn't get as personally involved as I needed to be. I believe you could take just about any scene, put it in another comparable movie, and it would be a great scene. Putting them all together as a whole ended up feeling somewhat monotonous. I do understand the love it's gotten.

The Shape of Water
(Guillermo del Toro)
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/37/The_Shape_of_Water_%28film%29.png
4
Early last year I believe, I received a pick list for some gear at work. It was for a film titled "The Shape of Water" what a stupid title I thought, as I picked some lights, grip gear and electric equipment. Flash forward to now and this Oscar nominated film is one of the best films this year...and the title doesn't sound so stupid.
Elisa is a mute woman who works at a government run lab as a cleaning lady. One night some scientists and military personnel bring in a creature encased in water. After an accident occurs, Elisa and her co-worker Zelda are asked to clean up some blood. She sees the creature. Being a mute, she must communicate via sign-language and this helps her be able to communicate with the creature. A bizarre relationship blossoms and Elisa discovers she must help this creature escape before it becomes fish food for some government science experiments.
I don't know what else to say about this film that hasn't already been said. Beautifully shot, wonderfully acted and fully realized in a world created by del Toro. The Shape of Water was able to transport me to this place of imagination and heart, I was invested from the very beginning. The film feel timeless and tips its hat to the films from the silent era. There are little touches here and there that scream del Toro, such as Shannon's fingers slowly decaying and becoming blacker with each scene. A small detail that maybe another filmmaker wouldn't have done.
The creature effects blend costume, make-up and CGI flawlessly. This is a living, breathing creature brought to life by a team of specialist and the ever so elastic Doug Jones. He's made a career out of playing these things, covered in heavy make-up and he brings another creature to life here.
Some really touching moments, moments of intensity and brief fun. The Shape of Water is one of the best films of the year.

Highly disagree. If anything, "Dunkirk" was the most attention grabbing film I've seen of 2017. Sure, there's not much to say about the characters, so I get it if one feels detached from the film because of that, but for me, it's because the characters were a bunch of blanks, is why I was able to project myself into their shoes, and feel the tension and urgency of the happenings. After all, the film is more so about the occurring events than the characters experiencing the events.

Survivor's Guide to Prison (Matthew Cooke): A documentary that focuses on two men, Bruce Lisker and Reggie Cook, who were falsely accused of murder and spent years in prison before they were finally cleared of their crimes and being freed. The film is a look at the problems that plague the justice system today. The likes of Cooke himself, Danny Trejo, Danny Glover, Patricia Arquette, and Adrian Grenier talk about the issues while we look at the Lisker and Cook cases.
I even interviewed Matthew Cooke (https://worldfilmgeek.com/2018/02/26/the-truth-about-prison-an-interview-with-filmmaker-activist-matthew-cooke/) about how long it took to make this documentary and the message he hopes to convey with it.

Loving Vincent - 8/10. Brilliantly done.
Alas none them wont win the Oscars. That would go to Coco, which was average at best.

He was just so amusingly flavour-of-the-month around that time, although I notice his EastEnders stint was after this film.
He was OK as the henchman in Cliffhanger....seems to be doing alot of the low-budget Brit-crime thrillers these days. He's very wooden in everything!!!;)
Rosemary's Baby - Deeply affecting and effective horror film. 88/100
Big Hero 6 - Pretty good, although I think its the weakest out of the recent Disney Animated FIlms - 70/100
Kramer vs Kramer - Touching, very well written, and has exemplary performances from all leads. - 85/100

Kingsman: The Golden Circle (2017)
3.5-
http://cdn3.darkhorizons.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/kingsman-golden-circle-new-tv-spot.jpg
I thought this was a step down from the first, but still had enough of the same great elements to make it very entertaining. I loved Julianne Moore as the villain, and thought Elton John was amusing even if silly. I generally like Channing Tatum, but as far as I'm concerned his scenes could have been deleted. I would say Halle Berry neither added or subtracted anything, and if she really wants to make any sort of impact, she needs to be topless. The action was a little over the top yet fun. Wifey liked it too and we'll look forward to part 3.

Super Dark Times (2017)
3
http://bbdtorrents.com/movies/3/super-dark-times-2.jpg
As long as it was going to have a stupid title, they may as well have called it Super Dark Times for Teens. Said teens appear normal, yearning for girls and swearing an unnatural amount. Four of them are horsing around and there's a tragic accident. What follows is the predictable stupidity, paranoia, and escalation of events. On the other hand, I read some reviews afterward that offered some logical alternatives on plot points. They gave me something to think about but I have to judge it how I saw it. The movie looks great and the performances are fine, but overall I found it very average. I do favor these types of movies and I appreciate the mayhem that comes at the end.

This is actually the second time I've seen it in the past couple weeks. On the viewing before this one, I actually pulled out my 2001 special edition DVD (the one in the metal case that ran for about $50 way back when) and watched it in Japanese. It was an interesting experience. Certainly the first (and only) time I watched a movie in a language other than my own and wasn't bored to death; still, there's clearly a disconnect watching in a foreign language, because I did almost fall asleep a couple times. While reading the (identical to Funimation's) English subtitles, I actually noticed that there are moments where both English dubs diverge from the Japanese dialogue. In the original Streamline dub, lines like "Tetsuo! Where are you taking him?" (as opposed to "Tetsuo! You can't just take him away like that!"), "That's enough, Tetsuo! Are you trying to kill him?" (as opposed to "You're gonna kill him, Tetsuo. You want that?"), "I had a dream." (as opposed to "It was a dream that I saw."), "Where's that gun?" (as opposed to "Damn it, the gun..."), Kaneda's "Damn it!" after Kiyoko says they're going to use Kei (as opposed to a mere "Ugh!") "Tetsuo!" (as opposed to "Heads up, Tetsuo!"), "Akira." (as opposed to "Akira's here.", which is, admittedly, actually pretty good), "Ah... It's Akira." (as opposed to "Hi. Akira."), and a few others are apparently translated directly from the Japanese dialogue. The Pioneer dub also makes some blatant mistakes in its translation. You probably know that scene where the principal says "Even though you are under 15 years old..." Well, guess what? In Japanese, it's "Even if you are under 15 years old..." Admittedly, when I watched it with the Pioneer dub, not knowing what he originally said, it was amusing in a "This dumbass doesn't know crap, because Kaneda's sixteen" kind of way. Also, There's Kiyoko's line towards the end. In Japanese, it's "But someday we will also be able to." In the Streamline dub, "But someday we will be." In the Pioneer dub, "But someday we ought to be able to." There's a clear difference here: there's a sense of certainty that the Pioneer dub lacks in changing "will be" to "ought to be." The Pioneer dub also has lines like "Kei! Damn it!" (as opposed to "Kei! Oh, hell.") that are merely copied from the original dub, which is unsurprising considering that Kodansha (who also did the subtitles) was involved in both dubs. Hell, "I am Tetsuo," is probably the only line that stays the same in each version. So... both dubs are pretty accurate in their translation with each making some blatant changes. I can also tell you right now that Streamline keeps all of the original Japanese sound effects (the Streamline dub, presented in Dolby TrueHD 2.0, and the original Japanese version, presented in Dolby Digital 2.0 are identical aside from dialogue) while Pioneer removes and replaces at least one, most noticeably the sound effect when Yama bangs the pipe against the ground just before using it to cause the Clown to fall off of his bike. Before pulling my DVD (which I'd really only gotten for the Production Report) out, I actually tried to watch it with the "hypersonic" Japanese track, which is presented in Dolby TrueHD 5.1 at the highest sampling rate of 192 kHz on the Blu-ray. I know it received high marks on nearly every DVD and Blu-ray review site but something is clearly wrong with it. Sure, the sound effects are nice and loud, but the Geinoh Yamashirogumi score is a completely different story. As someone who's listened to the soundtrack album many (I won't even bother trying to count) times, it just doesn't sound right. In particular, the chants in Kaneda's Theme, which I've listened to more times than the rest, sound thin, hollow and muffled on the hypersonic track, almost a mere whisper. They sound much fuller and far more audible on the Streamline and Pioneer dubs and on the old DVD's Japanese stereo track. Revisiting it almost two weeks later with the original dub, which is still my personal preference, I actually found from a brief comparison that the music score, notably the drums right before and during the title card, was, to my surprise, loudest on the original dub. Aside from two times which are already noted, I've watched this movie with the original dub. It's been claimed to sound "boxy" and exhibit hiss and "mild distortion." Well, if "boxy" means stable, then yes, I guess the original dub sounds "boxy." I haven't noticed any hiss (unless someone magically managed to think that of the wind effect when Kaneda and Tetsuo are fighting on top of the mountain of garbage) or distortion of any kind, though so my guess is that it's an attempt to try and scare newcomers off of the original dub. I've clearly said too much about this, so here are a few fun facts. Before Akira, Lara Cody and Wendee Lee, who voice Kei in the Streamline and Pioneer dubs respectively, did the English dub of an anime called Dirty Pair together. Cam Clarke and Johnny Yong Bosch, who voice Kaneda, as well as Cody and Lee did the English dub of the famous (though probably not quite as famous as Neon Genesis Evangelion) anime TV series Bleach, though admittedly, Clarke and Cody only did a few episodes and I couldn't tell you offhand which ones since I never watched it. Barbara Goodson, who voices Kaori and Takashi in the original dub, voices Shotaro Kaneda, who Otomo named this film's hero for, in the 1980 version of Tesujin-28. Cody and Goodson did the leads in the Streamline dub (which still isn't available on DVD or Blu-ray) of Castle in the Sky. Melora Harte, who voices Kiyoko in the original dub, and Steve Kramer who voices Roy/Ryu and Miyako (who's always had a male voice actor dating back to the original Japanese version) in the original dub and does additional voices in the new dub, are married. Also, I was rewatching the Star Trek episode Where No Man Has Gone Before a few weeks back and I noticed a parallel I might not have noticed before: the hero's friend turns out to have telekinetic powers after an accident and starts using them to kill people, friends become enemies, and the hero shoots his friend only to find it does no damage. Okay, it's not like the entire movie copies the Star Trek episode, but it's interesting to say the least. Okay, that's enough of that. Later, guys.

The Mummy (2017)
This installment of the newly formed "Universal Dark Universe" is not nearly as awful as critics would have you believe. There were varying complaints, from "this is a movie about Tom Cruise, not the mummy," to "this is just an action movie disguised as a mummy movie." Well, for the first complaint, I don't think that's fair. I'm usually fairly well-entertained by Cruise, but I can usually tell when Cruise is trying to make the movie all about himself and I don't feel that's the case here. As for the second gripe, well, yeah, it's a movie full of action and it's supposed to be a horror movie, and I didn't think it was scary at all. But the Brendan Fraser mummy movies were full of action and were pretty well-received. So, I kind of compared this movie to those and found it to be on somewhat even ground with them.
We've got the flashback tale at the first, like most mummy movies, where the person who will become the mummy is revealed. This time it is Ahmanet, a female Egyptian, played by the lovely Sofia Boutella, who is quite effective as the villainess of the title. Even swathed in bandages, she's hot as can be. And whoever choreographed her mummy moves (the non-CGI moves) did a real good job. Cruise is good and a bit of a goofball in this and it works to his advantage, so we take his free-wheeling adventurer at face value. He and Jake Johnson make a great team, using military cover as an excuse to search for valuable treasure hidden in the Iraqi desert. They accidentally uncover the burial place of Ahmanet, pissing off archaeologist Jenny Halsey (Annabelle Wallis), who knows exactly what they've uncovered and has another agenda besides hidden treasure which lies with her employer, Henry Jekyll (Russell Crowe), who is less effective than the rest of the cast but seems to be in the film for exposition when the time comes to explain his and Halsey's real purpose.
But the adventure and action is the real draw and on that level it works greatly. It almost never stops and I found it be very enjoyable and effective. It was much more entertaining than I had any reason to hope. I don't know if a sequel is really called for but it's set up if need be. It did so-so business here in the U.S. but raked it in worldwide so that could decide things.

Blade Runner 2049
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/content/dam/films/2017/12/22/blade-runner-2049_trans_NvBQzQNjv4BqNJjoeBT78QIaYdkJdEY4CnGTJFJS74MYhNY6w3GNbO8.jpg?imwidth=450
I avoided watching this when it came out; honestly I was just a bit nervous about what it would be like. I didn't think Blade Runner needed a sequel. I still don't think it needed a sequel, but having seen it I am satisfied they did a good job and it wasn't just a lazy cash-in. This looks and feels very much like the world of Blade Runner, but it has its own story to follow and its own ideas, even when that story fuses with the story of the characters from the original film. It's beautifully realised and an interesting sci-fi film in its own right. My complaint would be that it's quite slow and quite dour in tone. It's much less a thriller than the original, it lacks tension. It's more monotone. I missed the colours, the music and the excitement and tension of Blade Runner. And I didn't like Jared Leto. I don't know whether it was the character, his performance or a combination of the two. Or the plot hole surrounding his actions and motivations. Plus there were a couple of heavy handed flashbacks I could have done without. Perhaps the film was so long they thought the audience might have forgotten. But nonetheless I felt emotionally connected to the character of K, his hopes and disappointments. That they captured this emotion as well as pondering the sci-fi philosophical questions combined with the visual effects made the film a solid 4 stars for me despite my reservations about some aspects.

Opus of an Angel (Ali Zamani): I have a bit of a rule when it comes to movies: if I cry at the end of the film in a very happy moment, then I love the movie. This is a story about a once successful cardiologist who lost a patient and his family in a double tragedy. Exactly one year later, he decides to go on one last journey through L.A. before taking his life. However, when he finds a blind girl named Maria, he soon starts to question if he made the right decision. This is a great indie drama that is highlighted by newcomer Kaylynn Kubeldis as Maria, who becomes our protagonist's unexpected guide through the journey of living. Kubeldis, like her character, is actually blind and she did a great job.

Zombiology: Enjoy Yourself Tonight (Alan Lo): This is a wild and wacky horror-comedy from Hong Kong where a seemingly innocent square looking chicken monster is actually evil and starts a zombie outbreak. Two idiots who dream of becoming heroes actually have the chance to make that dream come true with the help of two butt-kicking females from a martial arts school run by the aunt of one of the idiots...and all this when said idiot's dad comes out of jail in order to make amends with both son and aunt (whose accident caused his prison time)...are you following? LOL
If Troma movies were made in Hong Kong, this is the definition of a "Hong Kong Troma" film...has a lot of WTF moments but somehow still made me want to keep watching it!

Sing Street is definitely my kind of movie.
The underdogs rising up. Rock music. Following your aspirations and dreams. Feel-good endings. Those themes for the most part are a home-run for me, and this movie combined them all.

While most Italian zombie movies of the late 70s/80s are a cash grab on the success of Dawn of the Dead (1978), Hell of the Living Dead (1980) is such a rip off, it can almost be mistaken for a remake. First off, almost the entire Goblin score from Dawn of the Dead is present in this film. The beginning S.W.A.T. sequence of the film is mirrored here and the uniforms are almost exactly the same. While this doesn't make Hell of the Living Dead any less entertaining, I would definitely recommend that those who haven't seen Lucio Fulci's superior rip off Zombi 2 (1979) give that a watch before moving on to this. When Fulci would get sick while making Zombi 3 (1988), it would be Bruno Mattei (director of Hell of the Living Dead) that would take over production.

I missed It Comes at Night (2017) when it came out, but loved all the posters and trailers released during the time (especially the one above). When it came out to mixed reviews I kind of sat on it and waited until it was on a streaming service. Finally watched it this past weekend. It wasn't a bad film, it just wasn't the film that was marketed - though, I was very happy there was no zombies in this.

I've been waiting for Mute (2018) since Duncan Jones released Moon (2009). After Moon became a big hit, Jones couldn't keep quiet about this Blade Runner-esque spiritual sequel he had planned. Back then in 2009, we didn't have Blade Runner 2049 (2017) or Altered Carbon, so this seemed like that only chance to revisit the neon soaked streets inspired by Blade Runner (1982). That's why I'm soo dissapointed in Mute (2018). It's certainly a massive let down and a mess of a story, but I don't think it's nearly as bad as some critics are saying; one review from the A.V. Club called it borderline unwatchable. I think it's to Mute's detriment that it came out soo close to the release of Altered Carbon. If we didn't have that or Blade Runner 2049, I feel like Mute would have been more appreciated solely for its atmosphere.
But since are awash in all things Blade Runner-esque at the moment, there's nothing really special to Mute. I'm not saying you should skip it, but I would definitely run through the far superior Altered Carbon and Blade Runner 2049 before wasting time with Mute.

"American-International did not invent the juvenile delinquents-jalopies-reckless driving-hot rodders-build it at home-chicken playing genre of movies. PRC and Monogram started churning them out in the mid-forties as part of their let-this-be-a-lesson-to-you genre, preceded by the zoot-suiter and jitter-buggers films, which was better than the social guidance films teen-agers were being overdosed on at school. PRC did at least use card-carrying members of SAG. This one is a sermon against speeding, and Darryl Hickman has it brought straight home to him when he side-swipes a car and causes a collision in which his best friend is killed---the fate of all best friends in juvenile-theme movies including "Rebel Without a Cause"--- and his mother is injured. Lots of lecturing precedes and follows."

Ick! This is a pretty nasty, tasteless little blood and boobs exploitation flick. Not Last House on the Left nasty, but nasty nonetheless. A religious NNNNUT in nice shoes is stalking and killing centerfold models because boobs are bad and pollute minds, mkay. That's it. It wasn't fun or even funny in an unintentional way. Gotta dig through the crud sometimes to find the gold.

I can't say that I enjoy Lanthimos' films but they're also very hard to stop watching once you get going. Farrell is a surgeon who killed a man by performing surgery after a few drinks. The deceased mans son puts a curse on Farrell's family that only Farrell can break. It's well done but if your not familiar with the directors style be prepared for some odd everything.

I really liked this movie, it feels like more of a 70s coming-down car film rather than the "swinging" type. Dennis Wilson and James Taylor play "The mechanic" and "The driver" who get involved in a cross-country race against a guy simply referred to as "GTO" (Warren Oates) for ownership of their cars. The character GTO is by far the most interesting not least because of his differing stories he tells to the various hitch-hikers during the race, kind of sinister but also pathetic and needy as he is in the knowledge he has a captive audience to preen via his stories. Less said about the acting of the two leads the better (they are musicians first and foremost after all). Kinda existential (careful at the back there :)) with a dreamy striking ending...a good 8/10 for me.

I only liked the beginning and a good suspense in some parts, but it's not sufficient..

A bit of a mess, to be honest. Sometimes shocking, sometimes funny, sometimes almost touching, but swinging between moods so fast it almost gave me whiplash. There were bits that were hilarious, I'll give it that, but twice as many bits that were probably supposed to be funny that were just really awkward. The plot is full of implausibilities and contradictions, which doesn't matter so much in a comedy, but matters more when the film is asking you to take it and its characters more seriously. I don't think it was really a good screen play. In some ways it was at least not formulaic, you didn't necessarily know where it was going, but in the end I'm not sure even the writer-director knew where it was going. I enjoyed aspects of it but it never quite gelled for me.

Lots of robot fetish in here but also lots of big dragon ball/nuclear style explosions and a well executed story. The art and animation are also top notch and despite being a spin off it's slightly better than the original TV show.

Two-Lane Blacktop (1971)
Director: Monte Hellman
Writers: Rudy Wurlitzer & Will Corry (screenplay)
Cast: James Taylor, Warren Oates, Dennis Wilson, Laurie Bird
Genre: Drama
"A story of two men drag-racing across the U.S. in a primer grey '55 Chevy. Dennis Wilson is the mechanic, James Taylor is the driver."
After the success of the independently made film, Easy Rider (1969) Universal Studios Vice President talked his studio into granting five unknown film makers a chance to make a film on their own terms, without the studio interfering. He felt that small independent made films was the wave of the future and the best thing Universal Studios could do was to fiance up and coming film makers and give them carte blanche in how they made their movies.
Two-Lane Blacktop, was one of those 5 films. Hailed by the critics as something special and generally liked by the audiences that had a chance to see it. However the films chances at wide spread acclaim was killed by in-fighting, as the President of Universal Studios did not share his Vice Presidents enthusiasm for the hands off film making project. So he killed Two-Lane Blacktop chances of success by pulling the plug on advertising. The film opened to a large number of theaters with zero advertising. As a result the theaters were empty and the independent films idea backed by Universal died out.
https://www.movieforums.com/community/attachment.php?attachmentid=41747&stc=1&d=1518664354
Two-Lane Blacktop is a plotless movie that basically lets us hang out with these road racers as they cruise down Route 66. The film has been called a time machine as it captures an America that is long gone. Today only portions of Route 66 still exist.
https://www.movieforums.com/community/attachment.php?attachmentid=41748&stc=1&d=1518664363
The cast is an unlikely pairing of musicians. James Taylor is the driver of the 55 Chevy and Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys is his mechanic. The girl in the back was an unknown actress, Laurie Bird.
The big name in the movie goes to Warren Oates who plays a rather odd character who tells a different story about his fast and wild life every chance he gets. His car is a 1971 GTO.
Like I said this isn't a conventional film, but it is special.

Violent and raw. This was a damn good movie. The performances are tops, especially from Reni Santoni as the counselor for the boy's reformatory. My only gripe would be with the score by Bill Conti (Rocky, The Karate Kid). It sounds a bit too dramatic, but, this was the 1980's, after all. Just when you think Sean Penn isn't going to be a complete bad ass, he decides to buy a few cold sodas from the vending machine...

By Jingo this takes me back, me and my friends saw this via a VHS "outlet" (guy with a suitcase) in the mid 80s. I remember it made a big impression on us as we watched it a few times before it was collected. We didn't have a clue who Penn was obv. Think this needs a rewatch as I remember it as very gritty. The bogey in the green beans scene will still be hard to watch I suspect.....yeuch!!!

Very good film that took an unexpected twist. Technically superb with DDL and Vicky Krieps both putting in brilliant performances. Speaking of the latter, this was the first time I had seen her and was very impressed. It was great casting to play her and not a bigger name. As everyone has mentioned and quite rightly so, the score by Greenwood was incredible too. Interesting to see how many awards this gets.

I'm not saying it's easy, don't get me wrong;), but in the scenes when she came out of the shower in full make-up or woke up with red lipstick on her mouth were stupify/hilarious/unbelievable (choose correct one).

This is this year's Moonlight. Good movie but I hope it doesn't win Best Picture again.
The last one third of this movie was so beautiful, which saved the entire film.
Timothée Chalamet gave an amazing performance, which totally out shined Armie Hammer.
The soundtrack of this movie is a must-own.
Things I disliked:
- It was a bit too long. I usually like long movies, but it needs to be good enough to not feel long.
- The beginning of their relationship was not very convincing to me. But again the ending saved everything.

I didn't expect much from the new Fullmetal Alchemist live-action film. I haven't watched a whole lot of live-action anime adaptations, but the impression I've always gotten is that they don't usually work out the best. This film was faithful to the source material, on the bright-side, but, unfortunately, it felt like it tried to squeeze so much into its running-time that most of the moments didn't add up to much. I enjoyed some of the special-effects, but they had their weaknesses as well. I really detail it more in the video, but I'll just sum by saying I'd give this a hard pass.

I loved how naturally spontaneous, elliptical and quick-paced it was, skipping lightly from one short scene to another. So much nuance and emotional depth crammed in just 90 minutes' time. I dont know why the critics panned this movie other than Shia Le Boeuf and he was great in this, regardless of what he gets up to outside off screen. I dont care about that and wont rate a movie downward because of it.. Stands up to a rewatch every time for me. I thought all three actors were great, it's stunning to look at, and it hit it home for me on an emotional level. I will rewatch this again, and then some.
I remember thinking a spin-off about crazy gangster Hannibal and Hugo Stiglitz as his right hand man would be a fun movie.

I remember thinking a spin-off about crazy gangster Hannibal and Hugo Stiglitz as his right hand man would be a fun movie.
And here I was thinking a spinoff playing more on how she got involved with Nigel would work because he's just so silently menacing yet sympathetic. Mads was amazing as usual.

Do it, but only when in the mood for a bit of "meh" superhero. This from THE Batfleck lover. (not his fault. :D)

I really like him as well. As I said above, I dont care for the stuff actors do outside of work. Lovely score, especially the cello piece Gabi plays for her backstory, for once a bright colour scheme that didnt offend me, and I just really related to Charlie. His opening story is gut wrenching. I'm not sure who Bel Powley is off the top of my head but thought Rupert Grint did a pretty fine job away from Harry Potter, and Bucharest for the location was a lovely choice. For me it brought in the creepy yet beautiful atmosphere of Hostel which set the mood for Nigel and Darko (bit of a reach there but just the late night mood I was in). I really dont see what the critic's gripe was.

LOL same for me. Nigel No Friends, and there is no doubt at all why he had none. god that was a good performance, and I loved the chemistry between him and Gabi.
I mean, there’s nothing I can really say about Casablanca anymore, right? It’s great, the performances are the stuff of Hollywood legend and, like all truly great efforts, the parodies, the homages and other decades worth of referencing never actually factor in any negative way while viewing it. There’s all those quotes I knowingly and unknowingly used throughout my life. It’s so economical. By the time Ilsa and Victor come in, it feels like you’ve seen a whole narrative go by. Characters like Ugarte, Yvonne and Annina feel fully realized and that’s before you get to most sweeping of romances.
Edit: I should shoutout Claude Rains for a most charming performance. A pragmatic and humorous man stuck amidst tragedy. I love him.
More than any of that, however, it’s Bergman’s close-up while she’s listening to Sam play “As Time Goes By” that I think will stick with me forever. I gasped a bit.
Love the poster you used in movie your watching tonight thread (although not sure if it's a poster or not). Great movie.
It was a screenshot.
That’s another thing - despite it being my first viewing, there was that familiarity with the images, the vistas, the locations, their names and the characters’ that had been embedded in me by cultural osmosis.
I wonder when the last time I felt that was... my first time watching The Godfather, maybe? I guess I’ll get it back the day I finally watch Citizen Kane.

The Nun's Story (1959)
http://www.leninimports.com/audrey_hepburn_nuns_story_uk_dvd_cover.jpg
Kind of an epic "hero's journey" type of movie with Audrey Hepburn as a nun, struggling between her natural independence and adhering to her vows of obedience.
I'd dare to call this a feminist movie, but where those holding the reigns of power aren't so much the members of "man's" world, but the Catholic church and the order of nuns themselves (the church in no way is portrayed as the "bad guy," but the message is clear that complete, life-long, religious commitment may not be for everyone, especially strong-willed daughters of world-renowned surgeons who are very intelligent scientists themselves). The story takes place prior to WWII and ends at the beginning of the war.
Some of the scenery is very nice (as much of it was shot on-site). My only fault of the film is that it's a bit slow moving while being 2.5 hours long, so may not be for everybody as "Sister Luke" travels from one position and set of challenges to another.
P.S. Keep an eye out for Colleen Dewhurst in an early role in probably the film's only "action" scene! (I thought she was Faye Dunaway at first, but realized this film would be too early for her). Plus, Peter Finch is in the movie - he's mad as hell and he's not gonna take it anymore!
4
I saw that a few times when I ws at school. Good movie and the two leads are fantastic, but scratching my head at the idea that the catholic church and feminism works in the same sentence.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017)
Wanted to see this just before the 2018 Oscars so I rented it. I love this movie. Frances McDormand was excellent here, and I expected no less. The director, Martin McDonagh, wrote the part with McDormand in mind, so it was truly tailor-made for her. There are certain actors and actresses that you look back on and say "Well, that role was just perfect for him/her" or "the role fit them like a glove." Such is the case here. It's a perfect marriage. The story should now be known to most movie lovers, but for those who don't know, it's a simple set-up: A woman in a small Missouri town has waited a long time for the police to find her daughter's murderer. So, sick of waiting, she rents out three billboards asking the police, particularly the chief (Woody Harrelson), why nothing was been done. Given that, though the set-up may be simple, the fallout from these signs is anything but.
McDormand's grieving mother has moved beyond the crying stage and is angry and immovable, setting most of the town against her. That Harrelson's chief is very sick and garners the town's sympathy doesn't help her cause. There are some instances of people trying to bully her to get her to back down but she absolutely will not budge and if anything becomes more resolute. Another potential roadblock is the violent-tempered mama's boy of a deputy played wonderfully by Sam Rockwell, who butts heads with McDormand, with neither flinching. In fact, everyone in her life or town is affected in some way: the chief and his family, her teen son, her ex-husband and his very young love, the printer she hired for the billboards, her best friend and co-worker, etc. etc.
The main three acting honors of course start with McDormand, continue with Harrelson, and complete the circle with Rockwell, who are all nominated for Oscars and deservedly so. But the rest of the cast is fine: Caleb Landry Jones, Lucas Hedges, John Hawkes, Peter Dinklage, Sandy Martin, Zeljko Ivanek, Abbie Cornish, Amanda Warren, Kathryn Newton...and so many more. An impeccable cast where every role adds to the overall scope of the movie and nothing is wasted. Director Martin McDonagh has done an amazing job with this film, going from bits of black humor to total darkness to sympathy to redemption to uncertainty---so many themes all rolled up into one solid satisfying whole. Great movie.

Depends on your opinion of both late-period Cronenberg and Atomic Blonde, I guess. The former is generally good, but this film never stops feeling like it's doing a half-decent impression of the same (with some Verhoeven mixed in for good measure), whereas the latter comparison isn't too favourable because Atomic Blonde was also an overly long and twisty spy thriller despite its style and action (which this film doesn't have).
I guess I was thinking more of something like Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy by way of Eastern Promises (starring Black Widow).
Anyways, the trailers seemed kind of generic so I didn’t plan on watching it in theaters.

That seems like a decent rating. Most of the reviews made it sound like a snuff film, where none of the graphic events were the least bit enjoyable.
JLaw sure did a good job selling it on 60 Minutes. Said she overcame a lot of issues to play this role and did so because she believed in the script that much.
Either way, I'm looking forward to seeing it.

Yeah, it's going to be one of those films that's deliberately trying to be unpleasant in its depiction of sex and violence (far from Atomic Blonde going for stylish action thrills) so obviously people are going to react negatively to that for a variety of reasons (not least of which is whether or not the rest of the film can justify its handling of such confrontational content). In that regard, I feel like it's going to be like mother! all over again.

rating_4Glad you seen this and not surprised you appreciated it. It's one of my favorites and I believe MarkF thinks highly of it too. I watched it when I was doing an Audrey Hepburn filmography.
On the surface the whole idea of sweet Audrey as a nun would seem fluffy, but it's anything but fluffy, it's psychological deep! Mainly because it's a deep character study, where we get to know the viewpoint of a strong willed nun and her life. It's also like 'living' the life of a nun as the movie literally puts the viewer in a nun's habit. So one get's to see a world we otherwise would never know about.

Darkest Hour (2017)
Very disappointing for me. Maybe I expected to much. Or maybe it's Churchill burnout...I mean we've had 3 Winston Churchill features: Darkest Hour (2017), Churchill (2017) and The Crown (2016)...I've watched all of those and a kettle full of other Churchill documentaries and in my mind Gary Oldman didn't quite invibe the character of Churchill. He didn't really look much like him either. So he didn't work for me. Maybe if I hadn't seen John Lithgow knock it out of the ballpark with his performance of Churchill in The Crown, I might have like Oldman better in this.
But even if Lithgow had reprised his role in this movie, the script itself isn't that interesting and Churchill is made to seem like a old fuddy duddy. Which I guess is popular as that's the way he was portrayed in Churchill (2017). I sort of hated the way the director choose to spoon feed us emotions by cutting to close ups of what he wanted us to focus on. I'm thinking of the handkerchief scene for one example. Ahhh...that just smacked of formulated film making.
The cinematographer was kinda lameo too. It was too self conscious and tried way to hard to impress with a bunch of fancy stuff that smacked of style over substances. I take that back, the cinematography wasn't overly stylish, it was more of the flavor of the week variety.
Hard to believe this very average film was nominate for an Oscar.

Tragedy Girls is one of the most thought provoking films of all time. A touching story of a pair of friends trying to maneuver their way through high school while being tormented by a mysterious killer. The movie touches on themes of isolation, commercialism, the failing of our education system and race....
nah just kidding it's a slasher about a pair of millennial's who want to be famous. Basically it's mix of Scream and Scream 4 with the Billy and Stu roles being played by (shocker) girls. It stars two of the minor actors from the X-men movies...Storm and Negasonic Teenage Warhead

Who manage to have pretty good chemistry, as the story takes a couple good turns. The movie doesn't go overboard with the jokes, but it also doesn't switch it's tone which I appreciated. It does suffer a bit when it comes to casting...it's got a distinct 90210 vibe with 30 year old High School students.
I'm definitely making a note of Tyler MacIntyre after this one

A disappointing day of films:
The Lego Ninjago Movie
Not funny, doesn't make use of the lego concept really, and not very much like Ninjago either. This is just like the bad dad plot strand from Lego Batman for the whole movie, it's all about Lloyd and his absent (evil) father. The other ninjas are just there in the background. Same names and colours as the TV series but seem to have completely different characters (not that they have much character at all). The animation isn't as clear either. Disappointing.

The Death of Stalin
A dark comedy about scheming amongst Russian politicians after Stalin dies suddenly. But it's really dark, surprisingly nasty actually, and not very funny. Good acting from pretty much everyone involved, Simon Russell Beale is convincingly repulsive as Beria and I liked Jason Isaacs, but overall I didn't enjoy it much. I think political satire works better around small things (see The Thick of It) rather than mass murder and rape. There are good bits in it, I liked, “I know the drill. Smile, shake hands and try not to call them c***s." Everyone else seems to like it (apart from actual Russians) so perhaps I'm just being churlish, or it's something that will grow on me afterwards.
2.5
I love films. I want to watch everything, but there's so much. There's too much. I can't fathom how I am supposed to watch them all. I know I will never see everything, but I decided to put on a brave face and naively pretend I will. I will see everything. I will watch them all.
Is the cinema more important than life?
I know what you are talking about:(

It was really bad. Thankfully, I was exhausted on friday evening, when this movie was on tv, that I could only blink my eyes.
