The Fate of the Furious (2017) - rating_3
While I still firmly believe that "cinematic experiences" like D-BOX are just gimmicky cash grabs, this film was a lot of fun in D-BOX. Popcorn flicks like this with a lot of action sequences are perfect for that format.
I still don't understand how this series went from stealing DVD players to superhero level ops, but it's an entertaining ride if you're willing to go along with it. It's over-the-top, and completely ridiculous at times, but I think it somehow really works for what this franchise has turned into.
I did find Vin Diesel a bit boring in this, especially in comparison to his more interesting co-stars. Dwayne Johnson is basically the Hulk in this film, and Jason Statham gets to stretch his Transporter legs again, which is always a pleasure to watch. It's been a long time since I walked out of the theatre with a smile on my face, so this was a rather pleasant surprise. Or maybe the seat moving around and shaking so much just scrambled my brains.

Melancholic movies can wreck my weekend, earl, so I'll decide at the last minute this weekend. I want to see it for the acting which everyone raves about so I'm sort of in two minds.

Here is a film that I am glad I gave a chance. A directorial debut, shot in his own house, in 5 days and on a budget of $50,000 does not sound like the type of film I have time for, but Coherence manages to entertain, confuse and delight.
I LOVED Coherence despite it not being a perfect film, it clearly has many flaws, but it somehow still managed to be one of my favourite films of all time, I think that how good of an experience it was while watching the movie, is what sold me on it the most.
Be prepared-- it stays with you for a while after.....
Ehhh now I;m getting worried, but also strangely fascinated. I might have to bite the bullet.

They should have made a movie entirely focused on the children since they were the extraordinary ones. Instead they made another generic fantasy movie.
should they follow through with the potential for a sequel, I would hope they would do JUST that.

Great film. The acting is incredible, the cinematography is great, the directing is impressive, the story is engaging and personal. Although the third act is where most of my issues with the movie reside, they aren't substantial enough to weigh the experience down. I definitely recommend Dheepan, you might easily end up surprised by what it offers.

Rotten Tomatoes is the worst site to take advice from, just look at the logic of its rating system, a film can get a 90% - 100% score, even if all of the reviewers agreed that it's just an okay movie.

This is an Italian cannibal film that is more erotic than the likes of Cannibal Holocaust and Cannibal Ferox, but without the animal killings. You would think that would mean this is better; not quite, but I liked it. The story is besides the point. There's just something about naked bitches in a dangerous jungle that appeals to me, and the cannibals in this movie bring a whole new meaning to the phrase, "eating p***y". A good cheesy soundtrack too.

It's not like it's even a good set up to a bad movie, rather a good set up to a patchy set up to a terrible movie.

Sheriff and ex-lawman hunt down Cartel hit man.
Patrick Wilson and Ian McShane were initially enough to sell me on watching this attempt on the modern western noir-type film. Unfortunately, even the both of them were not enough to save this movie from being a lukewarm experience. (Ian McShane really did make the most of the mediocre material though.) It was reminiscent of the steak in The Matrix. All the trappings were there, but I just knew it wasn't real.
P.S. The guns were way too big and unrealistic for LEO's but I liked that.

This movie is a nerve-wrecking experience. I wouldn't expect less from the director of The Graduate. Elizabeth Taylor is fantastic, I really respect her for the fact that she gained weight for the role instead of looking perfect. I absolutely love the fact that there's barely any music, the movie would most likely lose my interest if it blared "A Streetcar Named Desire Music" everytime something dramatic happened.
My only real problem was Sandy Dennis' attempt at acting like a drunk person which got very silly at times.
This is definitely one of my favourite movies of all time. I can't wait to see the stage play in May!

The Fate of the Furious - 4.5
http://cdn2-www.comingsoon.net/assets/uploads/gallery/fast-8_1/furiousposter_0.jpg
I have always been a fan of the franchise, so I feel my opinion may be a little biased, but I try to look at it from a neutral point of view. Mr. Gray has given us all what we expect out of a Fast and the Furious movie, which is fast cars, big explosions, and action packed fight scenes. Yes, they all check out here. However, the movie provided many twists that had all viewers including myself at the edge of their seats. He introduced new styles of how to keep the franchise going and how to keep it just as exciting as the last.
The only thing wrong about what I just said, is that they are in fact expected. It has become redundant, and not many people see that. This is because the details in the plot change, but the foundation of it remains the same. For a while now, the Fast and the Furious franchise has revolved their plots around the foundation of family. Whether someone hurts Dom and his family, disrespects them, or takes them away, this is and has been the basis of the conflict in many recent movies. However, it wasn't always like this.
The first few movies weren't solely revolved around the idea of family, although it was still a strong moral value mentioned on and on by Dom. Through time and time again, I've come to realize that yes, we get it. You just don't mess with Dom or with anyone in his family. A bit tiring. I want to see a movie similar to Tokyo Drift, a spin-off of one of the other characters and how their story meshed with the main plot of the series. This would offer something new, a different perspective, something that can give the franchise a little change of scenery.
^ that may become the first FF movie I see in theatres.
I don't know that I've ever gotten such a split reaction for movie. Half the people I know who've seen it tell me it's awesome, the other that it's worthless s***.

The Burning. It's the early 80s, there's a summer camp and lots of teenagers. It's either a sex comedy or a slasher flick. Well, look at the title. ;) Yes, there's a maniac on the loose hunting teenagers and some surprisingly big names in the cast in what must be their first appearance for most of them, including a young Holly Hunter (who has like one line), Fisher Stevens and Seinfeld's Jason Alexander. Yes, George is most definitely getting upset! Passable if unremarkable early 80s horror, mostly of interest for the cast.
A War (2015): 4

I'm not usually into war movies, but this one took me off guard and surprised the hell out of me, it even has children playing their roles perfectly, in fact, every last performance is fantastic. The story isn't cheesy (like most war movies) but realistic and well grounded despite a few plotholes, those are the only barriers that stop me from giving the film a higher rating. Please check this out, there is no way you will come out of it disappointed.

There might be a romance element in it. From memory he met his first wife in there. You know, the type of woman who becomes a pen pal to a jail bird then wants to white knight him.

This is certainly not a 'subtle' film, but it addresses racial issues with more nuance than I had initially expected. There are elements which are slightly undercooked, but on the whole, a very entertaining horror film. Viewed at the cinema with a very energetic crowd, which helped make this one of the more memorable filmgoing experiences in recent memory.

The Fate of the Furious (2017)
They did it again. 8 movies in and they are still good. At least I am still on board for this slam bang sub-serious sarcastic submarine mania of a movie franchise...
These movies have long moved on from merely fast cars and racing but the cars are still there and thankfully the characters are too. And by this point in the franchise it has embraced its own crazy self even more then the already glimpse-in-the-eye entries of the last three movies - in particular Furious 7. Of course, objectively it can get a little too much of the good stuff with the one liners and the insults and whatnot, but mostly it works for the franchise and I had a great time. The action is surprisingly not as over the top ridiculous as earlier. In my opinion this movie doesn't have much of scenes like the Dom and Letty catch from 6 or the skyscraper car jump from 7. It is insane action yes, but not over the top ridiculous in illogical ways, it's just... overwhelming... or maybe I'm just getting too used to this franchise. :p or maybe the execution is so good that it doesn't give my brain time to think it any further through. Nevertheless, it's fast, it's fun and after the halfway mark it just seemed to never let go. I was surprised we were through more than 2 hours of film when it ended...
These movies are not plain stupidity, they are intelligent stupidity. This is a multi million dollar franchise on its eight movie and it knows what it is and has become and I'm willingly in on the fun because everyone else seems to be - in front and behind the camera. I have such an amazing good old fun time when I go see these movies and having a smile on my face for at least 50% of the time should be a good indicator. The story is messy and clunky and there is a lot of characters and things going on which could be a valuable criticism, but does it really matter much in a film like this and in a franchise on its eighth film?
Sit back and enjoy people... It's okay you can like this and still go back to watching Béla Tarr movies on repeat. ;)

http://i.imgur.com/851mc7E.jpg
This is the fifteenth picture from David Cronenberg which I've had the pleasure to watch. It's probably his most technical and meticulously composed effort which makes it a pity that it hasn't been blessed with a Blu Ray transfer as of yet. What it lacks in traditional Cronenbergian shock, it makes up for in emotional trauma and domestic terror. It's a reserved portrait of a broken man coming to terms with his actions. The narrative structure and visual motif of Mr. Kleg being an omnipotent spectator to his past conveys the warped perspective his illness lends his life. A well made tragedy with an impeccable performance from Ralph Fiennes.

Yeah that was one of the probably failed shots at describing how this franchise feels.
It's big, loud and dumb but it knows how to play it all out and to set such crazy things up so well as this movie does... You need some kind of intelligence. Though that term is probably not associated with this franchise much. :D
But then again... 8 movies soon to be 10. You don't get that far, earning that much money and surprisingly positive reviews from critics almost every time, by being dumb stupid flicks. There is brains behind this mindless entertainment.

You seen the other movies in the franchise or at least all or some of the last 3? Then you know what to expect.
As a long time follower and fan of this franchise it worked great. Don't know how it will be if you haven't followed anything. It does kind of hold itself in past films but can still be enjoyed going in blind. Personally I would recommend watching the last 3-4 movies though at least but that's just me. Yeah if you're not a fan of 'leave your brain at the door, kick your heels up and have some stupid popcorn fun' you wont like that. Nice looking film but holy hell, I want my money back.
F&F though, I really like. I just find them really entertaining, loud and brash, and I need that after the last few movies as I said above. I just want to watch something with lots of baysplosions, good looking actors, and crazy nonsense stunts.

I think where a lot of people get that rush from action like the car action in the Fast series, I get from gore in horror flicks. Like I think I kinda wonder if I get a similar rush watching the Hostel movies that MM gets from the Fast series. It's probably because I was raised on horror. I get the charm of these cheesy action movies like that but they've always bored me unless I'm really invested in the characters or it's really well-made or something.

Yeah I can relate to the rush you get from Horror genre. For me it's a different type of rush but still, the adrenalaline is there. Silly in your face action movies for me are Woop Woop, whereas horror is screaming at the tv to kill the bad guy or brainless big bewbied girl (not that big boobs have anything to do with brains or lack thereof, but I get really tired of female characters in slash films written as morons who just have to run straight back into the house. DIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Yeah, I grew up with the Fasf series, that's one thing. I watched the first two on repeat on DVD and then watched all the movies since 3 at the cinemas... So they are kind of nostalgic or at least I have come to really love these characters and enjoy spending time with them and watch them grow and expand etc. Next to that I somehow have a weak spot for inventive action - so when it's creative or at least well done I can usually trash a good dose of logic. So yeah. And the practical work in the Fast movies are what also still makes me love these films. It's not lazy CGI left and right. The movie has cars dropping from a plane... well then the team behind will drop actual cars from a plane... and all this oraciak work DOES show in the final product. There is a love and craft here. I appreciate that too.

My best friend is a fellow horror fan and a fellow crazy person. But he has it a little worse than me, and due to bad experiences with extreme horror is very cautious about movies like this. We had to turn Cannibal Holocaust off fairly early in the movie, because he couldn't handle it (which I totally understand - it's not for everyone). Anyway, he says I've helped him overcome a lot of his fear with certain horror movies, but personally I think I can be a little pushy some times. Alas, for my coming b-day he said he wanted to watch the first two Hostel flicks with me, since I'm a fan. So we and a few others sat and watched the first last night. I think it was kind of intense for him while watching, but he made it through and I think that's awesome.
Personally, some things I was particularly impressed by this time around: the score and how well-crafted the torture scenes are. I still prefer the second one - a lot of that has to do with my preference for the girls in the second one to the guys in the first one who act like twats. I feel like if I liked the characters in the first a little more, I would give the film overall a better rating. Because I really do think it's a great horror film that shows Roth's talent as a filmmaker.
And Vinny has a great voice.
The action is surprisingly not as over the top ridiculous as earlier.
Rock repels a missile with one arm.
Roman is saved from drowning by hanging on a car door.
Etc...
Lol.
In my opinion this movie doesn't have much of scenes like the Dom and Letty catch from 6 or the skyscraper car jump from 7.
It's better than 6, but worse than 7. 7 was masterpiece.

This movie was probably better than 7 imo. But I think 7 suffered quite a bit from the fact that they had to work around Paul Walker's death.
Everybody be talking about that missile scene. I somehow imagined it to be The Rock elbowing the missile mid-air and making it change direction. I guess I was surprised it was "merely" a simple push on a missle already in the ground - a ground of super slippery ice that is, so the push-over wasn't really something that I thought was completely out of proportion... the Roman scene was a little far out in the way that holding on to that thing would be pretty implausable. But it wasn't too bad. I went with it.

Fate did feel like a step down because the setpieces weren't quite that over-the-top (and seeing them get spoiled in the trailers certainly didn't help), whereas the non-action parts really were a mixed bag. Theron barely left an impression even when she had the chance to be one of the more interesting villains in the series (though she arguably counts as one by default), plus I'm still not sure that the film's use of Statham is something that can be truly appreciated either (#JusticeForHan).
Besides...
...if Owen can survive what happened to him in 6 and Deckard is actually a sort-of-good guy then maybe there's hope for Han and Gisele being alive after all.

Yes, it's anime. Watched it last night and I was totally amazed. Everything about this movie was just absolutely beautiful. The story spotlights two Japanese characters caught in phenomenon that has them switching bodies every so often when they fall asleep. They try to cope with this by leaving messages to each for when they return to their original bodies in order to adapt to the other person's lifestyle. Yeah, it's a bit confusing, but just wait until you watch it...what I just mentioned is nothing. The movie is filled with twists and turns that'll have you waiting at the edge of your seat to see what comes next.
The script was solidly written and they made sure not to leave anything without explanation. The pictures and animation were so dreamy almost capturing you in the fantasy they portray. The movie allowed their characters to develop along the plot, which brought us closer and connected us with the characters. I believe this is an important aspect when creating movies, because as we grow close to characters, we start to feel the various emotions that run through their mind, totally captivating us into the movie. On top of that, everything is just so cute, or "Kawaii" as how they'd say it in the anime world.
Your Name was one of the best films I have seen this year, and that's a pretty tough feat to accomplish given that there were movies such as Get Out, Logan, Split, John Wick 2, and so on. If you don't love anime, you might after watching this movie. I'd suggest this movie to anybody who appreciates a well-written piece of art. Don't you think so?

Preference for the girls hey ;)
I like how the boys are a little obnoxious at times, makes it more realistic imo. Although I regard the second one highly. He definately is a talented filmmaker just not a crowd pleasing politically correct one. Have you seen the Green Inferno, panned by critics. I quite liked it.

Amazing. Simply amazing. Satoshi Kon continues to deliver. Not only has he made another outstanding film, but he is now officially one of my top 10 favorite directors.
Perfect Blue was a gritty and sleazy thriller based on obsession and identity with plenty of twists. Millennium Actress was an almost free form and mind bending love story filled with incredible visual flare. Both were full of surreal imagery, both constantly blur the line between what is reality and what is not real, and both have more then a few influences by cinema. Paprika seemed to merge a lot of these two films into one. While it is not as sleazy as Perfect Blue or quite as random as Millennium Actress, it does find an excellent medium between these two films. The film felt at time more like Millennium Actress with it's visual wonder and lighter tone. But when it got dark, it could get right into Perfect Blue territory. Not full blown mind you, but it could still get plenty dark. And like with Perfect Blue I was glued to the TV when it got thrilling. Further more the movie shows an incredible love for movies. Not just for what they are or the many visual references; but I feel for what they represent as well. There is a line towards the end of Paprika concerning the relationship between truth and fiction that really hit home for me. I won't discuss it since it will go into spoiler territory.
People can have their Inception, this is my favorite movie about people going into dreams.

The film starts with a Buddhist monk and his young apprentice. It shows the relationship between the two.
Everything seems to be going well and then...Cupid strikes.
The film goes on to document the lives of the Monk and the apprentice through the various seasons over the years.

Excellent thriller/drama story (based on Ruth Rendell's novel) told in a classic way by the 'French Hitchcock'. Kinda half-saw the ending coming, so it didn't come exactly as a shocker. Great performances by both Isabelle Huppert and Sandrine Bonnaire.

I was pleasantly surprised by that one. I thought it ws quite refreshing, especially without an overabundance of cheap jump scares. The first one got me enough for a giggle and then I didnt notice any more. I will have to rewatch this some time. Thanks for your reply, Uber (I think that nickname will stick for me now; it suits you). I agree - I dont like stupid jump scares either but the one I got set the mood for me. The reveal, from what I read, is not my thing, but not having seen it I shouldnt really comment - I just dont really like that aspect in thrillers.
Cox and Hirsch were excellent; I dont really remember much about the actress.
What movies do you think did this kind of story better? I can never have enough thriller genre on my radar.
There has been a big mistake done with "The Autopsy of Jane Doe". Instead of a twist, there should have been an atmosphere and "knowing without knowing" sense.

Rogue One after not being able to catch it in theaters. Way better than I thought it would be. The last 45 minutes was awesome, reminds you no matter how you feel about the previous movies the climaxes with the space and ground battles are always amazing. Would have liked to have seen more character development, especially with Jyn but it's understandable they didn't get much since it was a very straightforward film. I hear they cut a LOT of stuff too so I have no doubts more scenes that fleshed these guys out were among some of them.

I wish I saved my review that I just wrote (still awaiting approval)... He's much funnier in real person, in an interview, or on Chappelle Show. I think because it was his first special he used many of the boring methods of many mediocre comedians. Also, he went on and on with a reference.. If you don't watch his movies or shows, or if you don't keep up with trivial and gossip matters, it won't be applicable.

http://severed-cinema.com/images/abcd/angst/angst.jpg
Sometimes I don't consider great horror movies, as great movies, since they tend to have more flaws than your average great movies, does that make any sense ? Hopefully it did at least a little bit....anyways, that is not the case for Angst, it is a great film. It has amazing cinematography, and an amazing lead performance by Erwin Leder who pretty much plays a psychopath as accurately as possible, his performance is even raised to higher levels due to the camera work that puts us in the main character's chaotic mind. Not to mention the phenomenal score that adds so much to the atmosphere, I also wish to describe more of the amazing film making done by the director, but it truly has to be experienced at first to properly understand it. This would be a horror masterpiece if it wasn't for the second act, there I unfortunately encountered many errors, possibly due to the (low?) budget and the weak acting by the supporting characters, I have to say though, the first and third acts are literally perfection in my eyes, and that's something I rarely see in horror movies.

Tokyo Godfathers
And 4 for 4! While this movie is the least like Satoshi Kon's other works, it is by no means bad. It is not a mind bending story where reality is blurred and there is no surreal imagery. However Kon blends three excellent characters into a very charming story of redemption. Three homeless people unite to overcome their own personal demons and troubled pasts to save the future of an abandoned infant. It is beyond heartwarming.
Thus sadly concludes my exploration into Satoshi Kon's movie filmography. Sadly Kon died of cancer. The only thing left to see that he directed is the TV show Paranoia Agent. And that series has not been released as full and complete series on DVD or Blu Ray. Only in 4 hard to find DVD Volumes. But one way or another I will see this show.

Hercules (1997)
Did not like this at all. Bad songs, cheap looking artwork, bland main character, every single supporting character talks like a cynical 90s comedian, lame topical jokes, bizarre Americanisation of Greek myths that go beyond the usual Disney sanitisation to something just strange. Not that I expected them to show Hercules murder his entire family, but there's something a bit wrong about having the fates singing about the 'gospel truth'. Hades is a rehash of every Disney villain ever (at times there are shadows which make him look like Ursula from The Little Mermaid), although the underworld itself is well designed. The best bit was Scar's cameo as a pelt.

Going In Style (2017)
A comedy that doesn't know it's a comedy. While Caine, Freeman, and Arkin share wonderful chemistry that feels like a real friendship, the film itself doesn't really try to make that many jokes. The film just kind of plays without really trying to make you laugh and was kind of boring. But when they do try to make you laugh, it does usually work, so this movie is just a resounding meh.

The quiet earth (1985)
The films starts with a man called Zac Hobson waking up to find the place eerily quiet and things become more and more strange as there seems to be no people anywhere.
The film follows Zac as he searches for answers, whilst facing challenges to his own mental well-being, from his forced solitude and the lack of answers.

After a strong start, I felt that it faded away as the film went on. I felt that it lacked direction and almost descended into obscurity as I watched on.
It didn't really answer the questions that I wanted it to in a comprehensive enough way.
Ultimately I think that it was a great idea for a film that largely failed to deliver after showing early promise.

The Karate Kid rating_3_5
I don't even know how many times i saw it and it still has its magic:D

I should see this again. I'm sure if I sat down, I could remember scene by scene in my head (already am). John Avildsen made "Rocky" and "The Karate Kid" - very optimistic movies, and I haven't seen many since that had a genuine feeling, the relationship between Daniel-san and Mr. Miyagi, as well as Rocky and Mickey.

Carlito's way (1993)
I have been intending to watch this film for some time. It seemed like the sort of film that I would like and had a couple of strong actors headlining in Pacino and Penn.
I quite enjoyed the film but it didn't grip me in the way that I hoped it would or that other similarly themed and styled films have.
It was stylish and slick and Pacino carried it well as you would expect and utterly convinced in his role.

There were some excellent scenes in it, with my favourite being where Carlito (Pacino) addresses Benny Blanco (John Leguizamo) whilst eating his dinner.
Another superb scene is the 'pool hall' scene, which was great fun, and yet more realistic looking than many similar scenes in other films.
As you would expect, there is a love interest, friendship, double crossing, Feds, offers of deals, betrayal, revenge etc woven into the story, as well as a lot of trash talk and violence.
This is undoubtedly better than most 'mob' or 'gangster' films, but for me it just doesn't reach the top table of the genre.

The Fate of the Furious 7/10. Love the action, but the plot seems to be redundant.

The Fallen Idol - 1948
The Fallen Idol’s unique story, combined with Reed and Greene’s complete control of their crafts are the perfect recipe for a classic. Quick-note; Phillipe’s last interaction with the investigator was both hilarious and frustrating, but I won’t ruin it for does who haven’t seen it. I’m a twenty-eight-year-old “man” and this movie transported me back twenty years as I completely identified with Phillipe. The Fallen Idol’s score is why I love movies.

"London Has Fallen" 7/10
I was shock reading all the negative reviews on IMDb. The movie is better than expected.
The Autopsy of Jane Doe
Director: Andre Ovredal
Starring: Emile Hirsch, Brian Cox.
http://cdn.bloody-disgusting.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/The-Autopsy-of-Jane-Doe.jpg
This is a movie about an unidentified woman’s corpse is found half-buried in the basement of a house where some homicide has occurred. The body was brought to a coroner (played by Brian Cox) and his son (played by Emile Hirsch), who also assists his father, for autopsy and during the autopsy, some bizarre things start to happen.
I am a huge horror movie fan. Not only Hollywood but also of some foreign language horrors. The Hollywood horror movies made these days are really cheesy, clichéd and it feels like they are almost out of ideas about how to make a cool, different and genuinely creepy horror movie, not just some false jump scares. (There are exceptions though, like : The Witch).
So I did not have much expectations from the movie. The director has not done many movies. I watched Trollhunter, that was a long time ago. But this movie did surprise me. There are some really creepy stuffs going on in this movie.
The best thing in this movie for me is the plot concept. I haven’t seen anything like that before. This is not where there is a family, and the kid sees the ghost. This movie has a father and a grown-up son both working in a morgue. Hundreds of dead bodies are there, some are badly disfigured. They watch lot of crazy stuffs every day. So this movie has to do something other than disfigured body and my god they did it so well. Throughout the movie, the tone was consistent except for one or two scenes, where they used rock music in the background which I don’t think was the best choice.
Let’s talk about the characters. The father son chemistry was strong. Brian Cox’s character was very cool. There is a scene where Emile’s character thinks his father won’t allow something but I liked how surprisingly he was wrong.
For me the disposable character was the girlfriend’s character. She just showed up once in the beginning, and then at the middle of the third act. I didn’t care about her or about their relationship. In the third act, something happens to her and I was like, “Yeah I saw that coming.”
That leads to my biggest disappointment with the movie, which is when the supernatural things start to happen it took the same hollywood clichés I was talking about earlier. There are false jump scares. There are lights going off. There are doors automatically shutting down. So by the end of the second act the movie becomes like the average horror movies.
Also, in the third act, one character by mistake does something horrible, but within a few seconds, he kind of gets over it completely. That felt weird. The ending was also what we see in almost every horror movies.
This movie started great, great concept of plot, tone was good and consistent for most of the part. But from the middle of the second act it loses its uniqueness. If you are not fade up with Hollywood horror clichés as much as I am, you will definitely enjoy this movie. I am going to give it a B.

I felt the same way. It's a good concept that didn't fully live up to its potential. It's a shame, because it really could've been great. I remember thinking the characters and dialogue were the biggest culprits in the movie losing its appeal.
Saikat
Well I'll be. I had no idea the director of Autopsy of Jane Doe also directed Trollhunter.

Amok (K. Adamik, 2017)
rating_1_5
I hate when bad movie pretend good one.
I felt the same way. It's a good concept that didn't fully live up to its potential. It's a shame, because it really could've been great. I remember thinking the characters and dialogue were the biggest culprits in the movie losing its appeal.
Exactly. It started so well.

What a waste of Charlotte Gainsbourg, why did she even bother with this...

Queen of Earth (2015): 3

Okay film, I really wish it was better, but it wasn't, mostly due to the average acting, and the incredibly weak (at times) writing. I appreciated what it was trying to do, some of the symbolism worked, some of it was laughable and stupid, but at least the film was successful in being different and not a hot mess at the same time. I feel like I'm being a bit generous with my rating, because the acting and the writing extremely bothered me during certain scenes, but don't be mislead though, there are definitely some good and great parts in the movie, plus, everything was nicely shot, so if you're interested enough in watching it, go ahead and do so.
Some people liked it - I gave it my usual 2. I gave Perry's Listen Up Philip the same but somehow his debut The Color Wheel a 2.5, mainly for the elongated finale on the sofa.
Yeah, so far Alex Ross Perry is teetering on the brink of something great, but never quite reaches it for me. I gave it a 3/5, which is essentially a Mark 2/5. ;)

Can't grade this. I just saw this because I know someone in the cast, so I FF'd to those scenes.... I just canceled my Netflix, but not before kinda watching this.

Saw (2004) - James Wan
http://www.akfilmizle.com/uploads/film/2016/05/testere-1-korku-filmi-izle-saw-turkce-dublaj-720.jpg
- Wan is a master and this flick is a masterpiece. Ending is truly one of the best in the 2000's imo. Great horror.
4.5
Saw 2 (2005) - Darren Lynn Bousman
http://basementrejects.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/saw-ii-donnie-walberg-eric-jigsaw-tobin-bell.jpg
- Nice Sequel of a great 1st movie. Marky Mark brother Donnie is pretty good in his role and Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) is badass. Once again a great ending.
4-
Saw 3 (2006) - Darren Lynn Bousman
http://basementrejects.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/saw-iii-3-hellraiser-death.jpg
- It's good but not as good as the first two... they should've stop after this one. It's a good ending for the trilogy and it doesn't need more movies but once again they didn't understand. Entertaining and well acted by Tobin Bell.

The Young Victoria (2009)
I've seen this twice now and I find it utterly tedious. ITV's Victoria last year covered the same ground but in a much more engaging way.

Hitchcock cameos, I'm going to have to look for those from now on. Finally, I know exactly what DeVito was talking about in Throw Momma from the Train. Interesting criss-cross murder story. I was glued to the screen. Planning on tackling a handful of Hitchcock's films. I haven't seen many.

Well, looks like I might have a new movie for the top 100.
Just watched my newest purchase, been waiting for a week for it to arrive... and I bought it especially for the Verhoeven Club.
Not seen it a long, long time... man, I'd forgotten.
Showgirls.
Some call it trash... others just call it crap.
Yeah, it's trashy... but there's two words to sum it up for me; stylish trash.
I knew there was a reason I loved Paul Verhoeven so much... he can make a crap film and yet have it watchable and enjoyable.
Damn, I'm glad I'm the Curator of the Verhoeven Club.
Just passes that so-bad-it's-good mark.

I've just watched this and dial M for murder for the first time, ever since that Hitchcock thread motivated me. Very, very good films, very entertaining.

They're definitely worth checking out. I've got my sights set on Rebecca, The Lady Vanishes and The Trouble with Harry.

The Marriage of Maria Braun (1979)
I watched this for the 13th HoF
The only thing I knew about this film before watching, was that it was in German, and I assumed that it featured a lady called Maria Braun and that somewhere she gets married.
The opening scene is indeed the wedding of Maria Braun, who is marrying Hermann (a German soldier) before who goes off to war. They have one afternoon and evening together before he leaves.
When the war ends Maria is waiting for her husband to come home, before hearing from a source that he may be dead.
The film documents the journey of Maria through that time and beyond. I will leave it there, as I don't want to be the revealing spoilers.
Summary
I enjoyed this film for what it was. A story of love, yet a story of so much more. With that said, the title sums it up perfectly. It is indeed a film about Maria's marriage.
The main character and the actress that played her, commanded the screen from the start to the end. By the end of the film, I felt that I really knew Maria.
As I watched the film, it almost felt like reading a book. That was helped by the subtitles but also by the fact that you are watching a persons life, rather than it focusing on a snapshot or a single event within that life. You are viewing her Marriage to her husband and everything that happens within that and because of that.
And at the end it did feel like I had finished a good book.
So glad that it was nominated.
More words on it on my thread and the 13th HoF thread.

Arrival... labelled as best movie of 2016? Best sci-fi of the past 10 years?
Meh... interesting concept but overrated. Like with Inception and The Revenant, a triennial movie.

Wild Grass (2009, Alain Resnais)

A quirky romantic story told in a way only Resnais could tell it. The seemingly frivolous and trite plot expectedly reveals more depth and subtlety as it progresses and manages to be beguiling throughout due to Resnais' peculiar cinematic language, which keeps the viewer intrigued as to the director's intent and not totally sure where the story's taking him.
Can't say I liked it all that much but it was an oddly fascinating watch.

The rating system over there is useless. They even have shills hacking accounts somehow to give 'legitimate' ratings. Myself and some cyber bodies suddenly found one day we had rated Brady Bunch Movie 10. LOL. I've never rated a movie in all the years over there, and I've never even seen that movie.
Anyhoo, I'll take your word for it that it's a pile of poop and wont be putting it on my watchlist. Thanks for the headsup.
I recommend that instead of paying attention to the ratings on the individual IMDb movie page, you [click on the voters listed directly under the rating and] use the rating for the top 1000 voters (which includes me) to see a much more realistic rating. It still won't be personal but almost always closer to reality.

Opposites attract as characters played by Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn fall in love and get married. I always love Tracy, but I usually find that Hepburn rubs me the wrong way, even though I acknowledge her acting ability and screen presence. They were both excellent in this movie and well suited for their roles. It's obviously a romantic film with a mix of comedy and drama, and it's the dramatic side that worked better for me. It's all executed quite well, yet nothing about it grabbed me.

Meantime (1984)...some movie sites and a Wiki say 1983, but still some others stick with 1984. As it was first aired on British TV, maybe someone could let me know?
Watched my first Mike Leigh movie and while, knowing me, it shouldn't have been my cup o' tea, I really enjoyed it. I was hooked from scene one. All about a East End family living on relief who argue, show their greed (mostly the parents), and reveal their frustration about their life in general. I think that is really what this movie is about: frustration. Over their situation in life and their expectations, which more than often don't work out. I went into this expecting a downer but it's really not. The characters had me riveted. Tim Roth plays the younger son, Colin, who is supposedly slow in mind, but watching him, it's apparent he understands everything going on around him---he just doesn't speak out about it..much. His older brother, Mark (Phil Daniels) is sarcastic and mouthy to everyone, has no job just like his parents, and seemingly is jealous when their aunt offers Colin a job, but Mark thinks she has an ulterior motive. The parents lord it over Colin. Colin has a crazy skinhead friend (Gary Oldman, in one of his first roles). But, despite all this, in the end, it's fairly optimistic. I liked this movie.

Poltergeist (2015)
Let me preface this by saying that I never was a huge fan of the original. It was titled "Poltergeist," not "Everything But the Kitchen Sink." That was my general take on the movie. Good, but not a classic. I liked the pace and the explanation of the need to have so many spirits in the movie. Plus Sam Rockwell. It's got Sam Rockwell. It already gets three popcorn bags for that. :) They didn't overdo the house-built-on-a-cemetery thing by having skeletons show up all over the place in the last half. Just a few. Instead, we get to see inside the other dimension that the young daughter is sucked into and I thought that was a nice twist. There are some things they repeat but not a lot. Be shocked if you will but I liked this version better than the first.

(Joel Edgerton)
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/9/97/The_Gift_2015_Film_Poster1.png/220px-The_Gift_2015_Film_Poster1.png

With The Gift, Joel Edgerton delivers a thrilling film that manages to subvert the crazy stalker genre just enough to make it memorable. This film showcases the many talents of Edgerton, who not only stars as the weird and desperate Gordo, but also directs, produces and wrote the film.
Married couple Simon and Robyn move from Chicago back to Simon's hometown area. They recently lost a baby due to stress and want to relieve some of that. While back home, Simon is caught off guard by Gordon, an old classmate who wants to strike up a friendship. Simon doesn't seem to keen on it considering Gordon was considered extremely weird back then and comes off as a little socially awkward now. It doesn't matter though because gifts start showing up on their doorstep. When Simon finally decides to put an end to this one way friendship, Gordon doesn't take it so well and the past comes back to haunt.
The film challenges you to look at things a little bit differently. Going into the film, people have preconceived notions that Gordon is some psycho hellbent on destroying this family. Yet nothing is as it seems in The Gift and Edgerton peels away at the layers of this clever story bit by bit. Revealing what needs to be revealed exactly when it should be. He has complete control over every aspect of this film and showcases a talent that hopefully is explored further down his career.
Edgerton gives himself the Gordon role and plays it extremely fragile. The moment you see the guy you feel sorry for him. He manages to layer the performance with a hint of something sinister, this is mainly due to his eyes. I have to assume he was wearing contacts because the eyes give off a 'deadness' that just doesn't seem natural to me. One scene has him inviting Simon, played by Bateman and Robyn, played by Rebecca Hall, over to his place for dinner. Just as they arrive to his big and gorgeous place, he tells them he needs to leave for a work related emergency and will be back before they know it. Upon his return, the distrust and annoyance from Bateman is clear. Gordon's been caught in a lie, he didn't leave for a work related emergency, but he manages to craft a story in its place. Is he telling the truth? Who knows, but that dead cold stare he gives before he tells it is somewhat unnerving. He could be thinking anything; how do I kill these people? What story do I come up with? Or is it a sense of hurt and shamefulness due to his current life conditions? Edgerton gives a sad and apathetic performance that makes you question whether or not you are on this guy's side.
Bateman is typical in his films. He plays cynicism well and does so here. He has a controlling nature about him and employs it to the relationship with his wife, Hall. You can only be so nice to someone before you have to be mean and Simon wants nothing to do with Gordon, but why? Is he really that harmful? Robyn doesn't think so and this creates conflict between the two of them. Does Simon know who Gordon really is, or is he hiding something? A good dynamic to have in a film like this.
By the end of the film, despite extremely obvious wrongdoings, I knew whose side I was on, even if the film wants it to be a difficult choice. Edgerton has a bright directing career ahead of him if he can keep it up to this level. A smart thriller that doesn't treat the audience members as idiots is rare these days and The Gift is, for an eye rolling ending to this review, a gift to the audience.

I know it's not even half of his films but it's still a lot of movies watched by one director. I don't think I have even seen that many movies by just one single director... actor, writer, whatever.
Anyways, there is a reason I said I'm not even close to your number. That's because I'm really not. I don't know have many I have seen but it's mostly his big greats... Army of Darkness - 1992
This movie is the very definition of a cult classic. Plays to a very niche crowd, quotable, unique and it has an extremely loyal fan-base that has always supported the franchise. Ash has become an integral part of our pop culture to the point that he got a series built around him. Directors as unique and visionary as Sam Raimi and actors as iconic as Bruce Campbell are why I love movies.

PTA might be my favourite too, dunno i have loads of favourites haha.
I rarely end up going through with director binges even though i want to, always end up getting distracted by something else. Some of his biggest ones: Vertigo, North By Northwest, Psycho and The Birds i first watched around the ages of 7-8 thanks to my mum who is a big fan too, with the former three being favourites. And i always end up watching at least 2 new Hitch's a year, so it doesn't take that long to get to that amount.
I checked and it was 6 new ones over the last year. Was reading a bunch of Hitch essay's randomly and it got me really wanting to see The Wrong Man, so i did and i loved it; that put me in the mood for him and i watched both Rebecca and Frenzy that same month. Shadow of a Doubt and Rope were both in the 40's Hall of Fame and i randomly watched The Man Who Knew Too Much (50s) with my nephew around New Year. Also rewatched Vertigo for the Hitch Club and i'm hoping to see at least two more of his 40's films before sending my list for the Countdown.

That's awesome man. Great mum you have there too. :D anyways, yeah, I got loads of favourites too. The only reason I try and have some specific ones picked is so I can answer the classic questions about favourites when asked. :p that's also the only reason I got NCFOM as my all time favourite. I rewatched around the time when I joined this forum and loved it more than ever. So I picked it as my profile pic and as my number one film and it has kind of just stuck with me and all this have pretty much made it my genuine favourite because I keep telling myself and everybody it is. So I guess it is then. :D
But in connection to the Hitch stuff I really doesn't even have any excuses or real reasons not to watch more of him. As I said he might just be my favourite director. I really like or mostly LOVE all I see by him. I have The Masterpiece Collection on Blu-ray and there are many films in there I still haven't seen. I could just pick one and push it in the machine. I even have some of his movies ready to stream directly on my tv. I don't even have to get up and do anything. STILL I haven't seen all that many by the master of suspense. Shame o me. :p
I guess the 40s countdown is the perfect opportunity for me to see a good handful of Hitch films.

OMG so glad I've never seen this before, and so glad I'll never see it again. Infact it was so bad I even forgot what it was called because I changed the name to Alba's Butt cam. Lovely butt but c'mon; the shallows pulls this one as well. What is it about killer sharks and women's bums...

Rage (1972)
George C. Scott is great as usual in his second directorial job (the first was a TV-Movie). Scott plays a sheep farmer who spends the night camping outside with his 12-year-old son. In the morning, he discovers that his son is ill, so he takes him into town to the local small hospital. They are greeted by a doctor (Martin Sheen) from the local Army base who seems to already know what's going on and how to treat the son. Seemingly. Scott does not yet notice that things are not on the up-and-up. We are shown a group of army officers and local health officials discussing an accident whereby an Army plane accidentally released a toxic nerve agent designed for chemical warfare. And the plane just happened to fly over the campsite of Scott and his son. What follows is the son continuing to decline and Scott hospitalized and kept in the dark about events. His personal physician (Richard Basehart) wants to get to Scott but is put off by Sheen and his Army lackey (Ed Lauter). Soon Scott learns the worst and goes on a violent revenge spree against the Army. If innocents happen to get in the way, well, too bad. Scott is very good in his film, and he and Basehart have the biggest roles, although the film is peppered with familiar faces. The tension rises as Scott continues his vengeful agenda but the film ends rather abruptly. Not to say that the ending doesn't feel honest but when it comes, it seems that the film is just too short, despite a 100 minute running time. Just as it really gets going, Scott pulls the plug. That's my only gripe about the movie. I'd recommend this one with the caveat I stated.

This certainly got better as it moved on but not by much, and most of the time it just plodded along uninterestingly until it reached the ending that, frankly, was hardly worth the wait. It was just never creepy enough to get me fully on board. Yes, there were some good moments, and visually the movie looked pretty atmospheric, but story-wise it was too formulaic and forgettable.

Finding Dory
(Andrew Stanton)
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/3/3e/Finding_Dory.jpg/220px-Finding_Dory.jpg
3
Dory was a breakout character from the massive hit Finding Nemo. Mostly due to the friendly energetic voice performance from Ellen DeGenres, so it was only a matter of time before she got her own story.
Finding Dory tells us that she always had this condition and was lost as a child. She spent the rest of her life trying to find her family, or at least trying to remember to find something. That's when she swam into Marlin and the events of Finding Nemo unfold. One year later a memory is triggered and she recalls her parents, voiced by Diane Keaton and Eugene Levy. Dory decides that she must find them at once and requests the help of Marlin and Nemo. Can Marlin risk the safety of Nemo for Dory though? It doesn't matter to Dory as she sets out to find her parents, her home and her lost memories.
The first film was a huge hit for kids. It's easy to see why; a colourful palette, cute Nemo character, talking fish, it had it all. The sequel employs the exact same look and formula because you don't mess with success. The merchandise friendly new additions are Ed O'Neill as a cantankerous octopus, only willing to help Dory if she can help him. Kaitlin Olson as a near sighted whale shark and her friend Ty Burrell, a beluga whale with echolocation talents. These new additions are located inside a marine life institute, designed to help the fish. Could this place also be Dory's birth place? If it is, how convenient and easy.
Despite the notion that sequels should be bigger in scope, Dory feels confined. This is a nice change of pace as it feels different from the journey type film aspects from the original. We still go on a journey here, but the bulk of the story takes place inside the Marine Institute and the convenience of getting there hurts the flow of the story a bit. In the vastness of the Ocean, we just so happen to fall right into this place. Separated from Marlin and Nemo, Dory is 'trapped' inside. Marlin and Nemo need to find a way in and ask for the help of two sea lions just outside the Institute's walls. Idris "Stringer Bell" Elba and Dominic "Jimmy McNulty" West offer some laughs as the sea lions.
Improving on the gorgeous visuals, Dory looks marvelous. The sense of nothingness that looms beyond the deep ocean is always on the edge of the story and depicted well. To us humans, the beautiful sight to see is the coral reef and the school of fish. To the fish, it's the nothingness that awaits them beyond their homes. Finding Dory is a good sequel, kids will love it, parents will find it enjoyable, but less funny than the original and it does a satisfying job of telling Dory's story.

The Samoan Lawyer looking very awkward at the Irish premiere of Bad Day For The Cut.
Irish farmer who lives with mother is the victim of a home invasion. Fed up, he embarks on a bloody revenge mission to track down the assailants'.
Locally made film but has apparently been picked up by an American company so if you can get to it, Id highly recommend it. May be difficult to make out the accents though.

This family drama has its ups and downs, but boy did it finish out so strongly, one of the advantages these movies have is their ability to stand out as an independent film, there's no need to check out their predecessor(s) for context, in fact I would argue that the best way to watch the trilogy is by going through its films from best to worst. Overall, it has been a great experience to experience, and I'm extremely glad I finished it. Saddened to hear about the recent death of the lead actress, she gave a fantastic performance in the last chapter.

Nightmare Alley (1947)
Summary
I just don't think that this film was my bag. It was ok and it did a lot of things well, but I can't think of anything that I would say that it did more than well. The acting was largely good, the film looked ok, the plot was good, if a bit far fetched. There was only one character that I felt any kind of warmth for.
It was good, but not great for me.

Will do. Thanks Blix
He's pretty underrated. His work in Grand Hotel isn't given enough credit. His version of The Dawn Patrol is good but you have to remember that most of the action scenes were lifted from Howard Hawks' version.

His version of The Dawn Patrol is good but you have to remember that most of the action scenes were lifted from Howard Hawks' version.True, but at its core it is a character drama more than anything else, and as much as I love Hawks I believe Goulding's version is better in this regard.
Also, it's a great film to show someone who thinks Errol Flynn is a one-note swashbuckler actor. The man had hidden depths

The Happening - 2008
The ending, they walk out to the blazing wind - THE MOST WIND IN THE ENTIRE FILM - and they survive. Sorry. Spoiler alert, I guess, but you already read the sentence. I guess I don’t know how to write (you already knew that), just like our good friend M to the Night.
We get Exposition Scene Something, but this one is to wrap up the entire movie just in case the audience was questioning anything that happened. Key question they asked is, why did this happen. The answer given is, it’s an act of nature and we may never know why it happened. That same logic can be applied to where did the hour and thirty minutes of my life go after watching this movie.

This (or Caché, I haven't yet decided) is my favourite Haneke film so far, and it just happens to be his first feature too.
In this film, the audience takes the seat of a voyeuristic perspective into a bourgeoisie family's mundane life. Georg and Anna are a married couple who lost the essential qualities of what made them who they are, the viewer is given little to no characterisation of these people and that's for a purpose. The theme of alienation is present in all of Michael Haneke's films (the ones I've seen at least) in some way or another, and its presence in this one is very dominant, apparent and quite disturbing. This is a fantastic example that depicts the current state of our society, and it is a scary representation that will stick with you long after the credits roll.

Pete's dragon (2016).
8/10
Better than I expected. I haven't seen the original but the critics I've read say it's superior to that as well.
Some good actors in this movie: Robert Redford, Bryce Dallas Howard, Wes Bentley (American Horror Story), Karl Urban (Lord of the Rings).
The only criticism I have: they should have revealed Elliot gradually and build up to it.
The dragon actually looks more like a manticore, more like a lion than a lizard, but I think this was actually a good choice.
A heart-warming tale, a cross-between Jungle Book and Neverending Story.
https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/M/MV5BMjA4NDYxNzYzOF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNzU1NzcwODE@._V1_UX182_CR0,0,182,268_AL_.jpg
Get Out.
Good acting, surprising twist, topical theme, but I felt the ending let it down although I understand why the director chose that route, but for me it's overhyped and not at all scary so I was a bit disppointed. I will rewatch this, however, and as a drama rather than a horror.
Peter Travers of Rolling Stone rated Get Out a 3.5/4, and called it: "[A] jolt-a-minute horrorshow laced with racial tension and stinging satirical wit."
Eh no. Maybe I'm just desensitised and was lacking a sense of humour because I dont get the 'jolt a minute horror show' or satirical wit.
I dont know how to rate this. A large cup of poppycock without the salt.
