yeah well go watch something other than a Bathorycore movie from the early-'70s then
Thief (1981) great stuff, some of the dialogue a little stilted but a great tale of a master-thief wanting out and getting deeper in....Caan is simply magnificent, you can't take your eyes off him. I've always thought the leather jerkin, b@ll crusher jeans and cuban heels is a great look anyhoo :) "Drive" obviously scammed a fair bit from this movie (and it's the first time I've seen Thief). Hard to fault, acting, story, sountrack. Ach I can even forgive *some* of the dialogue 5/5!!!

Yeah this is a masterpiece. From one watch i knew instantly it was top five of the decade for me, only have The Master, A Separation and Before Midnight above it which are three films that mean alot to me and that i've seen more than once. Despite it's length i will watch this again in the next few months and i'll be just as riveted as the first times, i don't doubt that. This is around five and a half hours long and i definitely missed some things. Certain characters appeared after not seeing them for four hours or whatever and i forgot what they were like and who they were as the film rightfully didn't go over this again. There's also alot of random skips, in time and/or location which i didn't quite get and i can't wait to piece it all together when i watch it again.
One of the things i loved most about this was despite spending so much time with Carlos and what feels like an epic journey, things are left oddly ambiguos particularly about Carlos himself. We watch him for over five hours but that's all we really do: watch him, we see the personality he chooses to display but we rarely if ever get a true insight into what he is truly thinking, what truly drives him and how much the cause actually means to him. The show seems to go out of its way to not commit to any characterisation of him, at times it heavily points towards things but then brings up other things that contradict it, it's like it shows us certain peoples views of him and says yes this might be true but then there's also this which could be true. There's so many missing pieces in Carlos real story that it's difficult to tell whether his own highly committed to marxism and fighter for the oppressed (he was a terrorist i'm not saying he was a champion of the oppressed but that very well could be what he believes and what was his main goal above all else) or if the western goverments view of him as a sociopathic playboy who had no real commitment to marxism and was willing to do anything for the highest bidder. Personally i'd guess it was a mixture of the two, he probably started as a truly committed marxist who believed in violent revolution and as the years went on it just became his career, a way to maintain his opulent lifestyle. Regardless of what you think nothing is really known for sure as he is obviously not reliable to relate his own story and there's not enough information about what he was actually like during his nearly 25 years as a mercenary, terrorist, revolutionary, whatever you want to call him. It would be easy to portray him as purely an opportunist but the show doesn't do that, at least not completely.
There's so many examples of these contradictions. For example he never shares his politics at any length, when asked he always falls back on some variation of the extremely vague and generic "i fight for oppressed people all over the world against (western) imperialists", it kind of points towards him not actually having a developed world view and no familiarity with Marxism/Communism. Yet it makes sure to point out that he was brought up by a Marxist father, was around it all his life and went to one of the top Marxist Universities in Moscow before being expelled, this is actually brought up in the same interview where he shares his vague politics. It kinda hints at this being a family legacy thing he has inherited from his father and that marxism is all he has truly known which leaves open the possibility that he does feel strongly about the revolution but is just not a good political thinker, more of a soldier like he sees himself; but again on the other hand the possibility that this is all about his ego is a strong possibility. Then there's the talk about his passion for helping the oppressed while living a very priveleged lifestyle (i don't believe this is actually a contradiction on its own but i do believe his relationship/need for money and nice things is at odds with his apparent views); always living in fancy villas, constantly partying with a drink in his hand and a woman in the other. Seems at odds with what he is apparently fighting for, again though it brings up things that could possibly explain this. For instance during the two most comfortable moments in his life (as far as he's aware the latter is actually close to his capture which he is not aware of) shown in the film one in Syria when he has a fake identity as a businessman and is doing standard mercenary jobs for the Syrian government, and the other when he's under protection from the Iranians living in Sudan with a very good lifestyle. While living with this security both times he becomes restless, annoyed, possibly ashamed (we couldn't know that as he would never willingly show that side of himself) at living this easy life and not being out there fighting for the revolution. These feelings and the fact that he had multiple opportunities to just retire as he was very rich he could have returned to Venezeula and lived this opulent lifestyle if he so choosed allows for that reading. Of course the opposite side being that the thing he is missing is his notoriety, it's all about his ego which is the main reason he wants back out there. Another thing is his relationship with death, what was the Aipac decision all about? Was he scared of dying or did he believe in his ability to achieve his goals so much that he didn't think it was his time yet like he said? On the face of it you'd definitely go with the former and all of the later "i will be killed. it's my destiny." stuff is bravado. Then again when straight up asked if he is willing to die for his cause in an interview that is going to be published both in marxist revolutionary literature and in the west he doesn't answer the way most benificial to his image, that interview seems really calculated to paint him in the best light and i think some of it deliberately doesn't go. He straight up answers it by saying he loves life, he doesn't directly answer the question when it would be so easy for him to say yes i would die for the cause at a moments notice. Instead he turns the question on its head saying he loves life and that's what this is all about for him, it kind of connects with his earlier "fighting for the oppressed" talk as if he truly believes he is creating a better world for hard done by people, to give people what he has. There's plenty more examples of this but i think i've said enough to show what i mean, i really think the show did an amazing job of allowing for multiple interpretations, the Carlos in this is complex moreso than the one that was being presented in either the west or in countries that supported him during the time of his activities. At no time is it Pro-Carlos, it presents his acts as barbaric and he becomes an increasingly worse human being as it goes on but it still allows for the possibility that he did believe he was fighting for something and that he believed this was the only way to get it done.

Have to say Édgar Ramírez performance and the construction of this character is otherworldly. I have no idea if the real Carlos was like this during this period, but as the show points out this is fictionalised; it's largely based on real events but there's no way to know what he was actually like. Carlos of course paints a very self serving image of himself, and the fact is most of the people he interacted with; governments aren't going to speak of or admit to their connections to a terrorist it's actually a major plotline in the final episode so there is no character witnesses to give us a good insight into what he was like. Which makes this a fictional character and i think he was amazingly done. I was iffy to say the least for the first half an hour or so for various reasons. One being Ramirez himself, looking at pictures of Carlos then Ramirez i thought this was being very generous to him looks wise to say the least, he was a kind of typical good looking hispanic dude and i absolutely couldn't see it. It was like he got the hollywood treatment which is something that really turns me off, it actually worked incredibly well for story reasons. From the very first scene he is not a good person he is a terrorist he will kill civilians at the drop of a hat, there's no sugarcoating that thankfully. Ignoring that though he starts off as a more fun and charming person, someone that you'd love to hang around with if you didn't know who he actually was, as the show goes on he gets more and more pathetic and angry and detestable independent of his crimes, while this happens he seems to get uglier and fatter and by about halfway through he looks alot more like the real Carlos. It also followed the Goodfellas formula of initially portraying this as an amazing and enviable life before showing us the downsides then the downfall, except in a different way which i think was just as effective. I think the last half an hour of this is up there with the best last half an hours of any film i've seen. Not because it was the most entertaining, it was actually easily the most sluggish part of the whole thing but that absolutely perfectly fit the story and gave me the most amazing immediate after reactions to it, was perfect it was like a baloon slowly deflating. This is five and a half hours long, and if you watched it over two nights like i did no matter how much you are enjoying it it does exhaust you and i think the way those last thirty minutes put me in Carlos' shoes in an unbelievable way, i became hyper aware that this epic journey was coming to an end just like Carlos was and it made me struggle along with him. While most people will rightly hate Carlos, to me at least those last 30 minutes were still very depressing; don't get me wrong i'm happy that he gets caught and spends the rest of his life behind bars that's the least he deserved, it's more than that. The walls rapidly start closing in on him during that last half hour and people just as guilty as him but also much more powerful wash their hands of him, makes it clear that his whole adult life was for absolutely nothing. He's one of the last remaining remnants of a chapter in human history that is now closed, and while that was for the good of humanity there's still a sadness in that; just anything coming to an end on brutal terms like this gets to me.
Man there's so so so much more i'd love to talk about but it's impossible to do so. Carlos is the only character i've talked about, i haven't mentioned anyone else and there's so many great characters in this. I also haven't really mentioned anything that actually happened; i could post something this long on the whole Aipac Siege hour alone. One thing i was thinking was how would i rank the episodes and i'm really not sure. If forced i'd probably put the first last, it's 5/5 without a doubt but it does feel like the least interesting part in his life, he's at his least developed. Choosing the best between 2 and 3 is just too close though, Aipac might be the most entertaining part of the film and the second half is really good too but then the first hour and a half of episode 3 rivals Aipac as the most entertaining and while the last half hour is the most difficult to watch it is probably the most powerful. Anyway i'll just go on and on so: 5/5 masterpiece!

Carlos is 5 and a half hours long, there's a movie that's 3 hours long but i'd watch the miniseries like i did because i wouldn't cut a single scene. I watched it over two nights.

You don't have it marked watched on Letterboxd, is there any chance you are mixing it up? The only reason i'm saying that is because it's pretty devastating to me if you've seen it and don't actually remember you watched it when you were the member here i thought i'd love to discuss it with most.

Yeah, 2010 isn't that long ago. Possible I am mixing it up with something. 6 hours seems daunting with my watch list right now but I will see if I can get to it. I agree with you in that it looks right in my wheel house.

Also the miniseries is easily split up, i just couldn't stop watching it personally. The first episode is about 100 minutes the second is about 105 minutes and the last one is 2 hours. Each episode has parts to it too though and it's easy to tell when the story has completely shifted mid episode giving you a chance to return to it at a later time rather than watching it as three movies.
I told myself the first night i'd watch the first episode but after i finished i had to see the second, got through the first hour of the second but was to tired to go on, thankfully it was the perfect time to bow out and was about halway through the show.
For the members who have seen it the first hour of the second episode is: the whole Aipac part he ends up back in Yemen at pretty much exactly an hour in.

Seen and enjoyed Carlos, watched it around the same time I watched the Mesrine two-parter which was also very good imo.
Also for the record English is by far the most used language in this which greatly surprised me, and it makes perfect sense. He travels all over the world; there must be at least 10 langauges spoken in the film with four prominent ones; German, English, French and Spanish. English is often used as the common language between people of different nationalities to eliminate the need of filtering confidential/dangerous information through translators. I do wonder how many languages Carlos actually spoke though. In this he is fluent in Spanish, English and French. He also speaks some German and Arabic.

Watch it as a ridiculously short Drama. An hour at a time; watching this in 6 instalments is easily doable. You'll at least like it, it blew me away and i can't wait to see it again.

Kong: Skull Island 4 I was VERY surprised how much I enjoyed this. Plenty of Kong and the action was pretty d@mn good and I gotta tell, the VERY FIRST TIME I ever cheered seeing my man Samuel Jackson getting taken out.
The after credits shot made me smile showcasing all the old monsters; Rodan, Mothra, the Three Headed Monster (which I THINK was called Gamorrah) and of course, ending with Godzilla.

While I really liked Fellowship of the Ring, I was kind of underwhelmed. I expected a mind-blowing film following all the praise, and what I got was just a very good one. However, with the sequel, I can see where all the praise is coming from. The fantasy elements are fantastic, the characterization is much, much stronger than its predecessor, the fight choreography and editing are amazing. I can't wait to see how Return of the King turns out, because this was fantastic. I didn't watch the extended cut, but if anybody believes it truly elevates the film and recommends it, I'll watch it.

The Accountant (2016)
Ben Affleck (whom I not the biggest fan of) does an excellent job here. He plays a highly-functioning autistic who, because of his protective Army father, learned. along with his brother, many skills such as martial arts, gun expertise, etc. etc. He is also great at numbers and works as an accountant for a criminal organization, "uncooking" their books. He has a cover office as a CPA and occasionally gets a real job. His latest job causes trouble when he finds out the firm that recently hired him to find a discrepancy appears to have a dirty employee.
He meets a girl at the firm, played by Anna Kendrick, who does fine here as she tries to make friendly with Affleck, which is not easy as his autism makes it hard to chum up to people. When their lives become endangered, he goes into action. All the while a dangerous stranger, played by the great Jon Bernthal, seems to be walking the same path, showing up at places that dovetail with Affleck's clientele. J.K. Simmons is a high-ranking F.B.I. agent who assigns a lower agent, the beautiful Cynthia Addai-Robinson, to find out who this accountant is and they begin to track him down.
Full of action, great acting, and nice pacing, this movie has twists you may not see coming (I didn't---well, maybe one), and never lets up till the end. I was very surprised at some resolutions that don't come until the very end and that really pleased me. Oh yeah, John Lithgow and Jean Smart are also in the movie. :) This one is a good time.

I didn't watch the extended cut, but if anybody believes it truly elevates the film and recommends it, I'll watch it.
The extended edition of The Two Towers doesn't necessarily change the film as a whole, but it does further develop Faramir's character and the relationship between him, Boromir, and Denethor. If his actions bothered you in the theatrical version, there is more justification in the extended cut.
Even though the extended edition of Return of the King is arguably the most important (since its extra scenes clarify some questions/continuity issues), if I was rewatching the trilogy and could only pick one extended cut, I'd probably choose The Two Towers.

Lonely Are The Brave - 8/10
I think a good alternative title would have been "No Country For Free Men"
I see why this is Kirk Douglas' favorite movie. An individual trying to co-exist with modernity and all of its flaws. Gena Rowlands is great too. I thought there was too much empty time -- 20% of that movie was a horse documentary. But it could have been one of my favorite movies.
"A westerner likes open country. That means he's got to hate fences. And the more fences there are, the more he hates them."
"Have you ever noticed how many fences there're getting to be? And the signs they got on them: no hunting, no hiking, no admission, no trespassing, private property, closed area, start moving, go away, get lost, drop dead! Do you know what I mean?"

It was barely rotten, the performances carried it but the story was just a mess. I think the issue with the film is the first act worked really well but then you are just left with these wandering meandering pieces. It felt too small to be an effective drama, but then it was too dramatic to be a mystery then you hope it's going to be an action thriller and that sort of peters out. So in the end you are just left with some memorable characters and a movie where you are just...meh.

Transformers- The Last Knight 5/10
The sound was good. But do yourself a favour if watching this: Turn off your brain. You won't need it and it will in fact just ruin the movie by thinking about stuff and trying to make sense of things. It's like any other Transformer movie. Good effects, good sound. That's it.

Scrapbook (2000)
1.5
https://www.horrortalk.com/images/reviews_q_w/Scrapbook/sb21.jpg
A serial killer kidnaps a girl, brutalizes her, and keeps a scrapbook. This movie is just too low budget and poorly made to recommend. It's also a little long for one of these movies at just over 90 minutes. However, the actors do reasonably well with what they have to work with, the score is good at times, and it is properly sick.

Dark Journey (1937) 3.5+++ Quite the little spy movie set during WWI in Sweden with a very beautiful Vivian Leigh and confident Conrad Veidt. There a number of twists and turns and I must admit I was unsure who worked for what side for a good portion of the film, which i think is to its benefit.

Well, I did something I'd said I'd never do: I watched Akira with the Pioneer dub. So what did I think? Well, it wasn't bad per se, but some of the dialogue, like "It was a dream that I saw," "And now you're a boss too... Of this pile of rubble," and "Kaneda, run away!" (Kaneda's not exactly in a position to run away there...), was pretty unnatural, Kaneda didn't sound tough enough, Kei sounded too old, the Colonel lost too much of his growl, and my preference still lies with the Streamline dub. I still can't say I enjoyed the movie itself any less, though.Save

Waxwork (1988) - First time watching this movie, it wasn't bad but it wasn't great, was silly but uniquely entertaining. 6/10
Basic Instinct (1992) - Love Michael Douglas' films, and this is still an entertaining thriller IMO. 7.5/10
The Punisher (2004) - Watched again on Netflix. Always a fun movie to watch, good vigilante/action flick. 6.5/10
Death Sentence (2007) - Watched this one on Netflix again too, (I was in the mood for vigilante movies). Typical vigilante movie, violent and not believable at times, but still mindless entertainment if you like watching a movie with lots of violence and seeing bad guys get killed. The chase scene into the parking garage was well done. 5/10

Murder on the Orient Express - 2
(Kenneth Branagh, 2017)
[NEW WATCH]
https://i.imgur.com/xnfoK3A.gif
This movie briefly reminded me of when I used to mess with Photoshop. It reminded me, specifically, of desaturating an image so much that it becomes entirely white. This movie is kind of like that; it's so run-of-the-mill to the point where it becomes less than that, so horribly cliched that it stops being merely mediocre and enters "bad" territory. I was tempted to call it too "Hollywood," but I reminded myself that that would be an insult to all the Hollywood films that are good. Hopefully, though, using that word as a negative can help paint a picture of what this film felt like to me. It's key detriment is being so predictable craft-wise that it ends up not being engaging at all.
Kenneth Branagh's performance was the highlight for me. While I've seen some people call it obnoxious and I can understand that, I thought he was a well-drawn caricature (and I use that word in a very complimentary way) of the eccentric detective. He was so good, in fact, that I feel the film didn't deserve him. My only other positive is that after the film hits rock bottom with a horrendous climax, it bounces back with a resolution that is the best moment in the film.
But neither Branagh's character nor the last ten minutes could save this film from being too bland for it's own good.

This director certainly has a thing for prison films. He made Snitch with The Rock, which I thought was terrible, and he also made the underseen Felon with Val Kilmer, which was quite good. This movie is the best of the three. The plot is nothing incredibly original but the execution is outstanding. A regular decent guy with a family goes to prison after a tragic DUI accident. To survive, he must get into the gang life, and he gets into it so much that when he's released he can't go back to his family. I like how the story is told in that we are shown the present and what led to it simultaneously. The movie is brutal and much more realistic than the typical major release of it's kind. The performances are strong. What a crap ass title though.

This is the second movie I've seen from this director after Wendy and Lucy and I have similar feelings, mixed feelings. This is a fairly simple movie which I appreciate. It's filmed well, has strong acting, and beautiful scenery. It is extremely slow. That's not such a bad thing because I wasn't bored. It's just that I don't think it really excelled in any way to totally justify the pace. It's a thriller that's not exceptionally thrilling. It has some depth with dealing with regret and crap like that, but it's not all that deep. Most slow movies that I love give me some emotion but there's none here.1 It's a solid movie but I don't think there's anything memorable about it. The director is skilled and I'd like to see her expand her horizons a little bit.

Think this is flawed, particularly Ralph Bellamy's character. I find it pretty cheap making Dan so bland, to me it felt like they neglected his character on purpose so that you would root for Jerry and Lucy since they were much more entertaining. The same result could have been achieved by making him a good character while emphasising his and Lucy's differences to show that they aren't right for each other; Lucy and Jerry's chemistry was there for this to work so i was a bit disappointed at the way he turned out. Maybe that's not what happened and either Bellamy isn't a very good actor or it's just me and everyone else loves him either way that's how i felt. Still this was so charming and fun that i liked it alot anyway.

Kingdom of Us
Sad how children have to inherit the bad traits of their parents.. I wish there was more information on the dad. I thought the best part was when one daughter says "In every video, he was so sad, and we were laughing and running around".. There wasn't much information on the mother, who says things like "I wasn't perfect" or "There are two sides to every story" after one child reads the suicide note (though the audience doesn't know).. She never mentioned why she loved him, and it seemed like she wanted to pretend she never married the guy.
I'd recommend watching this even though I don't think it's very good.

Wonder Woman (2017)
This starts so well but the end is a bit meh. I enjoyed a lot of it - everything about the island at the start, the world war I setting, the dialogue between Diana and Steve, Gal Gadot, Lucy Davis, Wonder Woman being Wonder Woman. It's just that the longer it goes on the more it loses plot and personality which is a shame. Good, but in a year of superhero saturation, not amazing. (Although at least DC have actually got a female superhero as the lead in her own movie, unlike Marvel.)

Never read the novel or watched the tv series or any other adaptation for that matter, so can't compare... But I really did like it. Liked this but didn't love it. I liked enough about it that i recognize Vigo's death at 24 as a blow to cinema; even though i wasn't in love with this i think it was a very good first effort and that there was possibly great stuff to come from him. I understand alot of the praise for this comes from its influence on later cinema particularly the French New Wave. That's a movement i haven't explored that much yet so i'm looking forward to returning when the influences are more apparent to me. The film definitely got better as it went on, Pere and Juliette's bonding scene where he was showing off his tattoo's and stuff was incredibly endearing. Beforehand i kind of expected Pere to play some sort of villain role, was definitely surprised when Jean turned out to be the bad guy and also that his over the topness didn't bother me he may have been my favourite charactr actually. My favourite scene was probably in the bar with the magician , it was so fast moving with great music and that guy was really talented; was like a Chaplin scene or something. It also cemented how much of a humourless, jealous a-hole Jean was, that was the first time i truly felt Juliette's regret coming through. It was implied in the scene he hit her earlier but her smiling and having fun with that guy while also feeling nervous about letting this on because of Jean was what really did it. Thing is that guy was definitely overstepping his bounds so Jean's reaction was somewhat justified it was more how angry, controlling and devoid of pleasure he came across except when he got Juliette alone to try and manipulate her back onto his side, was pretty creepy. That was a problem for me i never really believed in their relationship so despite finding a fair amount of the last twenty minutes beautiful the music and underwater scene in particular, i was never rooting for them which hurt my enjoyment. Anyway good film.

I should have given up on this series a long time ago. Ended up fast-forwarding though most of it. Just shows how even a good actor like Anthony Hopkins can't save a bad movie. The only thing this series has going for it now is that the U.S. military gets to show off its tech. Do 13 year-old boys still like this series?

I finally was able to finish off the new "Apes" trilogy with War for the Planet of the Apes (2017). Admittedly, this made me want to revisit Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973) because of the similar premise. I really liked all of the new Ape films, but I wasn't really in a rush to see them and I don't think I'll be revisiting them anytime soon. The biggest problem I had with War was that I thought the film went out of its way to connect it to Planet of the Apes (1968) with Cornelius being Caesar's son and Nova basically hanging out with the apes. The disease in the movie also expedites the timeline as it explains how humans basically became feral after a few decades after War takes place.I imagined that Planet of the Apes would take place a few hundred years after War, not just a few decades

Sinister (2012) pretty good and disquieting, did a rare thing in these types of film where I was waaaaay off with the denouement. Good, solid and watchable. Female lead is the weak point, quite simply put, she's awful (is she really related to Mark Rylance?!?). I understand anyone trying to stop the fun and games (yo Adrian!) gets a bad shake but shes just unbelievably wooden, that said 3.5/5.

Bone Tomahawk was great, I thought! I enjoyed the spicy dialog and the slow burn. A treat of a western. The horrid scene near the end actually made me like it less because I thought it was totally unnecessary. I might have to see this again, though. I loved how it was made for the most part, and Russell is always fun to watch!

Great film. This is the second Dardenne movie i've seen after The Son; i thought The Son had some remarkable stuff going on more than anything Olivier Gourmet's performance who would rank up there with the best of this century for me, problem was i kind of ruined it for myself. The whole reason i decided to watch it was because i read the premise and thought it sounded good, thing is everything is kept a mystery for a while and with me knowing what was going on between Gourmet and the kid it took alot of the power out of it for me. There was also some stuff you had to suspend disbelief over which shouldn't be necessary in a no thrills, down to earth, attempting to be realistic film like that. Only gave it 2.5/5 but i'd probably up that to 3 thinking back, anyway even though i ruined that for myself i could tell their films had a great chance of working for me and this one did alot.
There was something both funny and sad about watching this kid try to run away all the time. After watching i read a couple of reviews on Letterboxd one of the highest rated ones was basically a sentence saying that the kid was an a-hole with a low score. Whoever wrote that wasn't wrong at all but that's what i loved about it, it didn't shy away from making the main character completely unlikeable when his situation meant there was a strong chance he was going to be like that. It's easy enough to make a film about a troubled child who half of the time is very sweet then half of the time acts out, this feels more real to me in that he is always a risk of going nuts for seemingly no reason. It does have endearing moments with him; everything involving his dad even when he is being a dick is pretty heartbreaking, and not in a cloying way in a very believable he doesn't want to let on that he is hurt way. For a long time the only direct plea for sympathy from him was that scene late at night when he says he wants his dad. The dad was a shthead not even sure what to say there, i literally facepalmed when he nonchalantly said "what's up" no apology no excitement for seeing him for the first time in however long, just gross. Such a pathetic pos trying to put it on Samantha, and it's just all the effort the kid puts into seeing him and how he's such a different person around him, the whole thing was disgusting.
No doubt i kinda hated him at times not because of his outbursts but because of all the stuff with Wesker, betraying Samantha after everything she had done including choosing him over her boyfriend; it made complete sense though so wasn't a problem. The actor who played Wesker was totally convincing as a manipulative snake, the kid already feels angry and betrayed, he is looking for a place to belong and Wesker offers this. There's also the fact that Wesker went to the same home he is the same as the kid so he knows dangling the good things he has in front of his face will make him believe good things will come if he just does what he says. It's kind of subtly heartbreaking when you see that he has broken his promise to Samantha immediately after making it and what he is actually going to do. I call it subtle because that's not the tone of the scene at all but it definitely made me feel bad all things considered. That's the best thing about their films and it's obviously not just theirs: the present things as is and let the viewer come to their own conclusions works alot for me at times. I mean i know these aren't difficult things to arrive at but i don't feel like the Dardenne's are trying to drag me there and i think evidence of that is a fair amount of people not liking the film because they despised the kid.
Like The Son i figured early on there was mystery here mainly what is this woman's deal. She paid for his bike then agreed to foster him without more than five seconds of thought and this was after seeing that he is obviously troubled. The obvious guess would be that she can't have kids but it doesn't go into it and i'm glad it doesn't because i don't think it would add much and i can't see a way for them to fit it in which wouldn't feel contrived; as she is obviously not going to tell the kid that the only way to do it would be her saying it to another adult which i wouldn't have liked. Her saying "I don't know" when the kid asks was enough for me. The actress was fantastic and the character was a saint basically, felt bad for her throughout. Really don't know what to think of the ending; overall i'd say i liked it i think. Thought it wasn't going to tell you whether he lived or not which would have been annoying, the whole thing was weird. Anyway great film.

This movie has some serious problems, such as an unclear protagonist, and a really annoying side character Kim (Ellen Wong). The latter one nearly had me cut the movie off prematurely, because it was like nails on a chalkboard. Additionally, my gf was put off by how close the movie was to The Thing (1982).
However, the practical effects were really exciting and fun to watch, and The Void reminded me a lot of Hellraiser (the first movie), which has a special place in my heart for the bizarre (yet clearly played) modus operandi of the antagonist. Also, the plot concerns Lovecraftian cosmic horror, and something about that aspect to it really sings to me.
Special thanks to Hey Fredrick for the suggestion

The third film from Wahl-Berg (that's me mashing Mark Wahlberg and Peter Berg together, genius I know) in their fact based drama trilogy. I have no idea if they are making more of these films so I'll call it a trilogy for now, with the other two being Lone Survivor and Deepwater Horizon.
Berg takes a documentary style approach to the filmmaking here, making the film feel like a first hand account of the events that day. Mixing in actual camera footage and the mundane routine of people that day, the film has a 'realness' to it that only gets stretched towards the end when I questioned how much of what I'm seeing actually happened. I remember the bombing, the shootout and the capture, I do not remember the shooting involving multiple pipe bombs being thrown around and the mass destruction ensuing.
For the most part though, the film seems to be faithful to the events, with the exception of Wahlberg who is a fictional character. He represents 'every cop' in Boston on that day, so it's inevitable to see him have a hand in everything that happens; at bombing site, tracking down camera locations to I.D. suspect, arrive at shoot-out, question kidnapped victim, find the terrorist in the boat, etc. He does his Wahlberg thing in his Wahlberg fashion with only one scene asking him to showcase his dramatic chops in which he recounts the events to his wife.
Is it too soon? Is it shameful? I don't have the answers to these questions. I can only sit down and watch a film that is presented to me. I found myself engaged in the manhunt, the round-the-clock detective work to I.D. the suspects and more importantly, the representation of the victims that day. The film ends with interviews from the real people who were there; runners, FBI, police, etc. Seeing people come together in the face of adversity brings a smile to my face. Maybe one day we can live in a world where a film like this doesn't have to exist.

Watched it last night and....Good call, Doc! Wow, brutal is right. I thought the pacing was similar to Bone Tomahawk early on but really got going about halfway through whereas Bone made you wait until the very end. Either way works for me. Impressive performance by Robert Pattinson. I honestly didn't believe he had that kind of acting chops. This was a good movie, but IMO it became a bit convoluted towards the middle portion which prevented it from being a great film. I did enjoy it... however, I didn't find it particularly rewatchable. But definitely well worth one viewing.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle 3 - I liked this, but it isn't as good as the first one. Kingsman: The Secret Service was a wild, tasteless, hilarious take on spy films, it had this feeling of "Can you believe what we're getting away with?" The second was funny, action packed, and sometimes gross, but somehow less daring. I wish they had pushed the mayhem of the first one even further instead of giving us more of the same. There's a lot to like in this sequel, but it just pales in comparison to the original. Plus, the trailers make it look like Channing Tatum is a major part of this film, and he really isn't. I just thought that was weird.

Was going to watch Brigsby Bear and i will some time in the next few days, thought this would be a better fit right now after the down to earth Kid With A Bike earlier. Nearly everything before he ends up in jail was terrible, the film would have been alot better if it started with him already in jail and any attempt at a conflict and/or emotional story was erased because the writer was obviously not capable of making it meaningful. The script is eyeroll worthy quite a bit; like the law of averages/cream nonsense, seems to be trying (and failing miserably) to say more than it needs to at times and it can be pretty tough to watch. For the most part i'd say the script was awful, like how horrible was the part at the pool table where Vaughn is hitting you over the head with the fact that his childs birth means so much to him when he is obviously going to end up in jail soon, seriously made me cringe how unsubtle and weak it was. And that didn't even satisfy the writer he had to make Vaughn seriously wary about doing this just...ugh. The attempts at making him likeable were completely unnecessary and they didn't work anyway, making him go back to help the police was so dumb and you even had the prosecutor reiterating it in the next scene too make completely sure that the audience is aware this is a good guy, he supports our boys in blue! Jesus christ. Not going to keep going on about the script because there was things i liked about this film but yeah it was mostly a POS, think this part of the film was on par with Con Air which it reminded me of (i mean he even refuses to see the kid while he is in prison just like Cage ) except it was taking itself alot more seriously making it that much worse.
It's annoying because the majority of the prison stuff really works, it's very brutal and Vaughn is excellent. This could have been much better as a 90-100 minute film with all or the vast majority of it set in prison. I mean the wife and baby's limbs stuff was super stupid but at that point i didn't care was just looking for some over the top action and i got it. The whole thing got more and more ridiculous and it was great, the sht cell cracked me up then i was dying when there was apparently something worse in Cell Block 99. So there was 90 minutes of a very entertaining brutal action film with a flimsly plot only there to hold things together, problem is that was following around 50 minutes of a horrendous attempt at an actual story. If there was only 5-10 minutes of the latter i'd say i kind of loved this but that's way too much to dismiss. Mixed but entertaining in the end.

See, I figured he was only going back to tie up loose ends. For example, if the police had arrested the thugs, they might've sang like canaries. I though Vaughn's character was just being a "cleaner" and not necessarily helping out the police. He had interests to protect..his boss, his own employment. I know at the prison briefing room the detective stated he thought the character was that of American pride and protect the police, but I think that was just one way to see it. Maybe I'm wrong, I don't know.

You could be right but he gave himself up anyway it's not as if he had any chance of getting away when he went back, his only chance of getting out of there was before he turned back. It would make more sense taking the chance that they would keep their mouths shut than heading back into an impossible situation to get away from, not to mention extremely dangerous he could have easily have died there.

Hmm, interesting.
What if he went back because he knew the two thugs were of weaker constitution than himself, and he had to protect the operation's identity. So, he would kill the two thugs, and knew the he-himself would keep quiet, even though he was gong to be incarcerated. Because, now that I think of it, that whole thing with the American flag...I don't remember one hanging over his door at his house, let alone inside. Maybe I'll re-check the film for that. But he could've just been letting the detective run his mouth and not disagree, and in fact egg him on, to keep the sentence reduced to 4-5 yrs, even though it turns into 7, which he is clearly really pissed off about when he finds out. (?)

Definitely possible and either way the detective was trying to butter him up, that then brings up that he left his wife in that house surely knowing that guy wasn't going to be happy about the money he lost. It then makes zero sense that he didn't take a deal and go into witsec; or if he was to keep his mouth shut he should have at least got his pregnant wife far away. I dunno i found that first 50 minutes horrendous outside of the police thing anyway, but glad you found something more in it.

Another thing I noticed was that how the script kind of kissed his ass with the guards commenting on his height, and the block officer commenting on his muscle...I didn't see much muscle in the shirtless scenes..but he does have a big frame..I thought that was kind of goofy.

haha very little of what he did was possible i think. There was definitely a man of steel thing going on when someone punched him or hit him with a baton his face would snap back into place, was silly because there was rarely any evidence that he had just been hit. The only thing that could hurt him was the stun bell and the only thing that could take him down was a combination of the stun bell and being hit with a steel chair

It's fun y because in the beginning, the two thugs were able to subdue him with a few hits to the gut and head when they took the guns and walked to their police demise...must be the rage he felt about his wife and kid..superhuman powers

BT - you read 'it's not a film for everyon' on social media, A LOT! but this movie is definitely not amovie for everyone. Those last few minutes (maybe 20 minutes) arenincredibly brutal. WAREHOUSED (ALMACENADOS) (2015)
director: Jack Zagha Kababie
This might be a turn off for a lot of movie buffs but I enjoyed it. It takes place essentially in one location: a warehouse. It's about passing the torch from a retiree to a young man. Their days training together is what is considered "getting down to business".
I can't say much more. I hate divulging all plot. The film is purposefully boring, but at the same time, it is not. It keeps you guessing, and the exaggerated time sense is often funny.
Good performances and a bit of heart went into the making of this well photographed film.

Blade of the Immortal (Rating: A): Takashi Miike's 100th film is an adaptation of the Hiroaki Samura manga that would go on to be an anime as well. Takuya Kimura truly breaks from his babyface image (from his days at SMAP and Gatsby commercials and J-Dramas) as the titular immortal Manji, who after avenging his sister's death, is cursed with immortality via bloodworms from Tibet, which allow Manji to heal. 50 years after receiving his "power", he helps a young girl avenge her father's death by taking on the group responsible. A series of one-on-one battles followed by a three-on-one then an epic climactic action finale with a twist shows loads of swordfighting and slashings, impalements, and limbs chopped off. Thankfully, Miike breaks from his mold and doesn't give us over the top bloodletting, but make it more subtle. Hana Sugisaki, Sota Fukushi, Erika Toda, and Ebizo Ichikawa give out some phenomenal emotional performances in their roles as well.
Almost ranks up there with the Rurouni Kenshin trilogy as the best live-action adaptation of a manga and anime.

Damn, not quite sure what to say about this. So sad and infuriating while being presented in a simple way, i usually hate sad dog films because i think it's very easy to emotionally manipulate someone with them but i mean Lucy isn't even on screen for the majority of this it was about the horrible reality of homelessness more than anything. Michelle was amazing and i loved the old guy too. This didn't have the same type of atmosphere i'm used to from Kelly's other films (with the possible exception of the nighttime creepy guy scene) but it wouldn't have suited it anyway, was better the way it is. That ending :(. There was no way that wasn't going to be the ending i was never in doubt from the moment Lucy went missing but still man..dang. I think of it as the closest thing to a happy ending this film could get since it's obviously in the best interests of both Wendy and Lucy but it was still sad. Great stuff Kelly is defo one of my favourite working directors. I'd still say i prefer Night Moves, this would probably be second.

Glad you liked this. Gideon just reviewed it too and thought highly of it, as did I.
I was relieved that nothing bad happens to the dog, I hate those kind of films myself, though it is sad for Wendy (Michelle Williams).
I have to agree with you that Michelle was amazing in this and so was the old guy security guard.
"the nighttime creepy guy scene" even though nothing really happens, that was a hard scene for me to watch. I had the same reactions to Wendy and Lucy that you did and I'm definitely a big fan of director Kelly Reinhardt.
Michelle Williams is another Reinhardt movie, Certain Women (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4468634/?ref_=nm_knf_t2) (2016) Have you seen that one? I forget if you've said.

Yep one of my favourites from last year. Michelle doesn't give the best performance in that IMO, but i do think her performance was better than her Manchester By The Sea performance.

Love the premise. Have always been really interested in how the German people felt and reacted when the war was coming to an end; all of your enemies are storming your towns and cities and this isn't like say the German Invasion of France when the war was still ongoing and the Germans needed to keep the French happy somewhat to stop the French Resistance from getting too large. This was the end of the war Germany is surrendering it's just a matter of time and the country will be punished, both formally by international laws and by the invading troops who don't have to hold back at all. Maybe the most powerful scene to me was the mother in utter despair over The Fuhrer's death, she could love or hate Hitler that's irrelevent it's the implications that brings that must have been a punch in the gut to so many in the country. Maybe they went a little over the top with the old woman and her "We broke his heart. He loved us so much!" at the Hitler painting, i nearly burst out laughing at that, still there was obviously staunch supporters of Hitler including people who weren't particularly political but had bought into his cult of personality. Easy to understand considering how much Germany prospered from Hitler taking over until the start of the war, plus she was obviously insane. Was kind of confused why they were so focused on the Americans rather than the Soviet's who did the lions share of the war winning, but then i remembered this was South Germany where the Americans and Brits came through while the Soviets came from the East, that was a genuine annoyance of mine for a while until i remembered that.
My favourite thing was the locations and the way it was filmed. End of war Berlin is focused on too much IMO in media, even Seelow is only used as the lead up to Berlin usually. Was so glad when this was all set in South Germany, love the woods and countryside it is a beautiful Country and we see the ugly ruins it has been left in, this actually reminded me of Hansel & Gretel i'm guessing that's my limited exposure to German media and the fact that it was literally a journey through the woods to grandmothers house (realized just before i posted this that grandmothers house is Little Red Riding Hood but i'm leaving it in anyway haha).
I don't think i ever felt the emotional weight that i should have; i fully recognized this as a horrific and depressing situation but outside of that i wasn't swept up by it. Dunno think there can be such a thing as too much bleakness to the point that you end up desensitised and end up purely observing it rather than feeling it, think that's what happened to me. Well except for the baby but that's a given. The other thing was by the time Tomas turned up i kind of felt like i had had enough. Nothing was wrong with Tomas i liked the actor and the character was fine, it's just now these nazi kids need to head on face a jew and all of their creepy staring at each other, damn it really tired me out which may have been the intention. The twist was...whatever. Don't think it added much either way, it obviously forced Lore to confront her feelings and views but it was introduced a little too late for anything meaningful to be drawn from it IMO. Anyway i liked a fair amount of this and i'd at least call it a good film despite some stuff not working for me.

I don't even know what to say... This is a fascinating movie, but in the most horrible, terrifying sense. The movie reaches very far to try and convince you how the jews are ruining society, for example claiming that people in ghettos are just rich people in disguise, and one particularly manipulative moment is one where the camera pans across several smiling children trying to make them look evil. But all I can see are a couple of innocent smiling children. It gets worse and worse, and you have a strong stomach if you're not at least a little bit sickened when the movie talks about jews like a plague; nothing more than an epidemic rat.
To a sane mind this is of course only emotional and factual distortion to try and demean a group of people, but for those who are already far down deep to believe literally anything that they are told, it's a scarily effective propaganda piece. Unlike The Red Menace, which was hilarious in its unsublety, there is nothing really all that funny this time. The times I let out a shocked chuckle, it was of disbelief and deep sadness. The narrator sounds absolutely deadly serious, you can tell he think he's doing a great cause, a means of "improving" lives for Aryans. And the scariest thing is, it's not even presented as poorly as you'd think. For example, I do think that the process of Kosher slaughtering is cruel and unsound. But you have to remember they are taking real-life footage, only twisting the context and meaning of it to suit their own agenda.
This is a very important documentary, for the reason that it gives you a very good idea of what people were being told to believe, and just how much conviction was put into forcing upon these hateful ideals.
Unpleasant to watch, but if you're interested in history and wonder how such evil in the world is possible, by all means... good luck.
On a thematic level, this is an obvious 1. But from a historical perspective, and how fascinated I was (even if was because I couldn't believe what I was hearing), it's a 2. This is one of the most frightening movies ever made, even the posters are enough to send a chill down my spine.

The Killing of a Sacred Deer 3.5
Dr. Steven Murphy is a renowned cardiovascular surgeon who presides over a spotless household with his wife and two children. Lurking at the margins of his idyllic suburban existence is Martin, a fatherless teen who insinuates himself into the doctor's life in gradually unsettling ways. Soon, the full scope of Martin's intent becomes menacingly clear when he confronts Steven with a long-forgotten transgression that will shatter his domestic bliss forever.
This is a slow beautiful, terrifying film and you really can't talk about it because it's sooooo slow. I believe it's based on a Greek Tragedy it certainly feels that way. The big warning when going into this film is everyone acts very strange. If you get the chance to see this is the theater you should because no way will you not end playing on your phone or falling asleep if you rent this.

2nd time viewing. Wow, what a movie! Electrifying performance from Linda Fiorentino, one that should have earned her an Oscar nomination. This is such a twisted, yet expertly made noir thriller with solid supporting performances from Peter Berg, and Bill Pullman. Flawless direction from John Dahl, who directed another excellent noir thriller that I love, Red Rock West. Fiorentino's character in this film is the quintessential femme fatale.

Rough Night isn't a terrible film per say but it gets more things wrong than right. This Hangover/Ghostbusters(2015) hybrid tries very hard to make women funny but much like how Chris Hemsworth stole the show in Ghostbusters the men stole the shot in Rough Night. Mush like with how in Ghostbusters Wiig and McCarthey both tried to play the Bill Murray role, three of the women tried to play the Zach Gallifankis role. The humor is also very soft R where if you are making a film like this you need to shock the audience it doesn't do that.
But don't get me wrong it's watchable and some of the jokes work it's just a deeply flawed and uninspired film. It just works best when the leads are off the screen.

Liked this alot. I could relate to it a scary amount, knew plenty of people like Arbor and Swifty growing up and could completely recognize their behaviours. The school scene for instance easily could have been one of my classes at school; Arbor has an anger and attention problem and once he was given in trouble he initially got stubborn then cocky when his classmates started laughing which to him means approval whether they were laughing at or with him, it all felt real to me in the way every character acted throughout. The troubled kids at my schools often had similar homelifes to Arbor and Swifty and these kids often had one or two friends who were similar to them while everyone else shunned them, plenty of them never finished school and i've since heard of plenty of them going to prison. Even down to the mother who cares but has a really tough situation that prevents her from providing everything she is supposed to, obviously this isn't a universal situation but it was really close to the people like this i knew growing up. Well i mean the scrapyards and horses are definitely alien to me haha, but overall it was close. I definitely didn't treat those kids well when i was a kid, won't go into it i mean i wasn't a bully but i also wasn't particularly nice to them and that's always been a regret of mine. Think stuff like this gets to me because whether it's close to reality or not it feels like an insight into the troubles those kids faced that i didn't myself and i feel really sorry about some of their situations now, stuff like this grounds me and makes me recognize how privileged i was basically. More than anything i'm a sucker for British working class films.
Good performances, was crazy seeing Paddy and Carl from Shameless in this. Very good, could have liked it more but even though the main conflict was inevitable i wasn't that into it, probably because it was so obvious it was coming. Think it was all too predictable: when we learned they were friends they were of course going to fall out, when Kitten was introduced it was obvious that they were going to cross him, Swifty's connection to the horses was very clearly going to be involved in both of those things and the involvement of cables and live electrical wires made one of their deaths by electrocution easy to foresee. Kind of felt like i was just waiting for it all to happen. Not sure why the hug with Swifty's mum didn't resonate with me as much as it should have either. I did love alot about it though as i said.

I too felt that it was a compelling and believable story. But Jennifer Lawrence was badly miscast in the role. Of all the actresses they could have gotten to play the Ree Dolly part, she was a weak choice. IMO John Hawkes steals the show as Ree's uncle, Teardrop. He's a powerful actor.
It was a bit hokey in parts, but I'd give it a strong 6/10.

I think I'm right in saying that The Last Seduction was first shown on TV and, therefore, wasn't eligible for the Oscars. Same with Croupier and a couple of other films in the 90's.
How interesting if true, I knew that Croupier (and a few others) had a "Channel 4 " funded feel to them so may well have appeared on TV in a graveyard slot in some form. The Last Seduction just seemed like a pucker funded film? It's not something daft like it has to have a theater (or a certain amount of theaters?) release to be considered at the Oscars? i.e. something that went "straight to video" wouldn't? Showing my ignorance...apologies!! :)

I saw this a few years ago before JL was as famous and, yes, she's still a bit too clean-cut for the part. Over the whole piece of the film I think she does a good job though. John Hawkes is indeed scary in this film, the scene where the Deputy pulls over Teardrop in his pick-up is extremely tense!

The Selfish Giant

Yes Kitchen Sink Realism will have been a direct influence on this sort of film i imagine. It's kinda similar to Loach except i dunno.,.simpler, feels very realistic. It's about two kids who start stealing stuff for a scrap metal dealer. You may like it.

I was surprised to see such high ratings in the reviews section.
I was attracted to the premise of a racially-charged "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner" turned horror film.
Perhaps my disappointment was because I watched this movie in 3 sittings as opposed to a single sitting (never a good idea for the "flow" of a movie). But man, I thought this was one of THE most awful movies I've seen in awhile.
My disappointment may also be over all the hype I heard about this (how Jordan Peele was going to be the new Wes Craven or John Carpenter).
The build up of the first half of the movie was pretty good as far as suspense goes, but as it nears its conclusion it seems to turn into a disjointed story made up of random elements that don't make much sense, and very few surprises (see spoilers below).
This film felt like it would've made a decent installment of a half-hour, modern-day Twilight Zone, but as a feature film it felt hackneyed and unoriginal with a very unfulfilling ending.
I didn't mind the use of hypnotism - although that's kind of boring, but when the story takes a turn to being about brain transplants... well, that's a bit more interesting, but they don't explore nor really explain it. A laughable scene was the dad cutting blind Stephen Root's head open and removing his skull cap before he even had the other "patient" in the same room - I'm pretty sure brain surgeons do go around leaving brains exposed while they leisurely go looking for other patients who aren't even close to being prepped - it defies the whole sterility of the surgical suite concept. We learn that "grandma and grandpa" had their brains put into other black victims who now serve the family as household servants - first, if these white folks had such a low opinion of blacks as the film suggests, why would they want to live out their lives in a black body, no less spend their renewed lives as servants? Seems, if they were racists, they'd try to find young healthy whites to put their brains into so they could be rejuvenated with an upwardly mobile future ahead of them full of all the amenities that white privilege could supply. It seems like they started to explain some things, but none of it made sense - like part of the victim's personality is still in the body while the transplanted brain is dominant... but how would that work with a brain transplant?
The movie might have worked a little better if some of the arbitrary mad science had been explained a bit more.
Any stars I give it are for the suspense of the first half and the TSA friend - the only enjoyable character in the movie who lent a few chuckles.

As an addendum, for those who'd like a racially-charged action / thriller with a simpler but more realistic plot, I recommend "Surviving The Game" (1994).
A homeless man (Ice-T) is hired as a survival guide for a group of wealthy businessmen on a hunting trip in the mountains, unaware that they are killers who hunt humans for sport, and that he is their new prey.

Steel:
The idea is that the white characters aren't the stereotypically hate-all-black-people-no-matter-what kind of racist - it's more of a "liberal" kind of racism where they superficially appreciate black people's personal attributes but ultimately don't care about them as autonomous human beings. It's implied that Grandma and Grandpa only pretend to be servants while a new victim like Chris is around and that they go back to "normal" in the meantime. The reason they transplant into black people instead of white people is because they think of black people as being expendable compared to whites, plus missing white people would draw more attention than missing black people. As for why part of the victim's personality remains, I think the idea is that they can't remove the victim's entire brain (guessing they leave the part that regulates bodily functions) so they use "the sunken place" to keep it dormant.
The surgery aspect - my guess is that they've done it so many times by this point (as evidenced by the collection of photographs) that they're starting to get a little sloppy and also underestimate how much Chris himself is able to resist their methods.

All good explanations, Iro! And most of them occurred to me with a bit of afterthought. I'm not big on exposition, but maybe this movie needed a bit more of it to give it more rationale. All in all, I didn't like it - mostly due to the ending. Like a lot of movies, I was pulled in by the first two acts, but ultimately let down by what felt like a poor or just lazy ending.
I was almost anticipating Chris being arrested by cops with headlines of "black man slays entire white family." Or just shot on site by police (making a statement about a lot of modern social issues) which would also be reminiscent of films like Night of the Living Dead where the hero (also a black man) is unceremoniously shot in the head, being mistaken for a zombie - or that just being an excuse for rednecks to shoot a black man. I'm not saying these would be great endings either, but maybe better than what we got, which didn't even feel like an ending.
What I really don't understand is why so many people thought this was such a great horror movie - it wasn't scary, it was kind of corny, most of the turns were predictable, I enjoyed Chris' friend more than Chris (i.e. I didn't really feel for the protagonist), etc. It reminded me of one of those revamped Twilight Zone type TV series of the 1990's.

I think it works precisely because we the audience are anticipating such an ending (between the Night of the Living Dead connection and the social awareness) and it was even shot as an alternative> I do reckon it makes sense to have Rod be the one who rescues Chris at the end since he's been the voice of reason throughout the whole movie.

I liked Rod showing up (as he was the only character in the movie I thought was mildly entertaining), at least it was something unexpected in an otherwise very predictable movie. And I do appreciate when films break from formula, but the ending seemed played like comedy - just a punchline to what had been a semi-serious thriller. It just didn't fit for me.
I agree with a line from one review I just read on IMDB... "Moves at a snail's pace towards the obvious."
The odds are it will get some Oscar noms, including Best Picture. I gave it 3 which is closer to most people's 4.

Ghost World (2001, Terry Zwigoff)

Zwigoff's first fiction film perfectly captures that tentative transition period from adolescence to adulthood and the mental/emotional upheavals and transformations that come with it. The underlying theme of the movie is the spiritual evolution of Thora Birch's character Enid (the name means "soul" or "life" and obviously has a symbolic meaning) who confronts her own existential fears and insecurities as she explores the world and struggles to come to grips with her new coming-of-age reality. In juxtaposition to the emotionally inconstant and impressionable Enid, Rebecca (Scarlett Johansson), who fades back into a secondary character more and more as the film progresses, reveals herself to be a far more focused, pragmatic and worldly person who knows what she wants from life.
A simple, perhaps flawed, but beautiful movie that manages to be funny without laying it on too thick and quirky without being self-indulgent. Loved it.

I really enjoyed this film and Iro explained all the points pretty well.
My own issue is with typical stupid character decisions.
Chris knows that he can be hypnotized. He's finally found a way to combat that and then when he escapes his chair...he leaves the damn cotton behind. He just proved to himself that it works and he could use it later on when he goes after the family, but no, he just leaves it behind. Why? It doesn't build tension for the viewer, it irritates them.

Justice League (Rating: B+): I saw it last night and Zack Snyder lived up to his promise on injecting more humor, courtesy of some one-liners and Ezra Miller in particular being the comic relief of the film. Some great action with twists and turns, using Jack Kirby's Fourthworlds arc as the basis of the film (Kirby even gets the credit). My only issue was that Steppenwolf's CGI wasn't that great when it came to close up shots. Thanos, Hulk, even Batman v. Superman's Doomsday was more convincing than Steppenwolf, but I forgave it. The final end credit sequence is quite a hoot...no I won't spoil it, but it's pretty cool IMO.

River of Grass (1994)
Director: Kelly Reichardt
Minimalist director Kelly Reichardt's first film. The theme of her film is: a bored to tears housewife abandons her baby and husband and takes to the open road with an aimless drifter. Their incompetence in crime yields some humorous moments...we then follow this odd couples ineptitude as they go on the lam.
Reichardt's budding style is apparent with this introspective look at the loan individual, who's lost due to circumstances. Cozy ( Lisa Bowman) is the lost soul. The director's use of voice over narrative gives us a window into Cozy's mind and forms an intimacy that many bigger films lack. Cozy seems real as does the films world of run down motels and dead end towns.
I'd describe Reichard's first film as 'garage band, indie film making'. There's inspiration here but some of the editing choices are odd for her style, with abrupt cuts and inter-cuts that at times make it hard to follow the story.
I didn't care for the secondary story of Cozy's dad, who's a cop who's lost his gun. But his story takes up little time, and it's Cozy's story that's important.
I don't recommend this as a first Kelly Reichardt film to watch. I'd suggest watching some of her newer and more focused films like: Night Moves or Wendy and Lucy first.
At 76 minutes this is an easy watch.

Ichi is a bit of a mess in places but also hugely crazy fun at times too, I actually don't mind the slow-build to Audition as much as you but do think it could have been pared back somewhat and still had the same impact. Colonel Pepper (who is never seen again after the first 20 or so minutes) takes his daughter Peggy to Hollywood, hoping to fullfill her dreams of becoming a big star. She gets there and gets accquinted with the kind of people working there, but seems to have stumbled into the comedy stage, when what she wants to perform in are dramas. She eventually gets an offer, and is naturally eager to start acting in more serious work. But now she's in love, and has to leave her old life behind...
What a wonderful film. I expected some enjoyment out of it, but I didn't know it would be this great. The acting is fantastic from every turn, especially with Marion Davies, whose physical presence is nothing short of brilliant. Almost all of the laughs comes from her, when it came to the visual comedy. William Haines was very sympathetic as the happy-go-lucky Billy, where the only thing he loves more than clowning around is being around Peggy. When he's heartbroken once he visits her and finds out she's not the same she once was, you feel with him. A lot of credit has to go the script. It's scarily accurate in how people act once they get famous, but most of all it's hilarious in a way only silent movies can be. One of my favorite parts is when the director of a comedy crazily starts gesticulating at a screening, until he finally can't hold it back anymore and reveals to his fellow audience member that he made this movie.
The music is very striking, visually it looks really good, and there's an amusing surprise cameo in the first act. I'm not gonna spoil it, since it's all the more joyful once you see it for yourself.
I don't watch a lot of silent movies, but I decided to watch this one and don't regret it the slightest bit. Thumbs up!
