Solid Sony-Marvel film with Tom Hardy giving a pretty good performance as the embittered Eddie Brock and the voice of his alter-ego, who sounded like a love child of Bane and Christian Bale's Batman, giving some witty one-liners at times.

Nice little mid-credit scene that looks like it's setting up the guaranteed sequel and loved Eminem's titular song. Can't wait to see where this one goes.

It’s a Charlie Day impression and no one can convince me otherwise.

Bit of a thin and predictable tale here despite the acting performances. I get the impression that the film itself thought it was a little bit more profound than it was. It was just OK. 6/10

P.s. mention for playing Big Stars "Thirteen" as the closing song, one of my favourite songs by one of my favourite bands (gto this a 6 rather than a 5 :)).

I felt so terrible for the man who had thought of him as a friend. He (the friend) was so helpless... I probably would have rated the film higher if it wasn't for that and what happened to the woman before as well.

There are some films about sociopaths that are quite good, and even when they betray people it still works with the story as a whole, because either we could have seen it coming, or it felt like some kind of redemptive twist, or furthered the plot to show how brutal the person was when they were going for what they wanted, but this wasn't really any of those. Simply cowardice, like you say. A corporate spy drone.

Agreed, as I mentioned the family thing MijaFrost. Do you reckon there was any mileage in the malicious phonecall mentioning syphilis about his family. Possible explanation for his "madness"? Bit of a stretch!:D

I couldn't really get into the narrative. Some of it felt like a presentation which made me feel like I was in a boring classroom. Otherwise it is visually amazing and quite eerie. It also gave me the idea of what to do after the movie.

Lean On Pete 2018

This is one of those movies I may not have sought out, if it weren't for you mofos. But when I read the insightful , passionate review of this movie by Luis- months ago- I knew it was one I would have to see. And I' m glad I did.I think Luis' excellent review stands by itself- and I suggest you may want to read or re
read that as well, but I will add a few personal thoughts.

( There will be some semi SPOILERs ahead on my review, tho not in Luis')

First off, I generally shy away
from ' coming of age' films which this ( partially)
is, but this movie is much more than that. The armature of the movie is ostensibly a boy and horse tale . The horse is a beautiful velvet brown quarter horse ( always loved that breed ) named Lean on Pete , who' s growing past his prime- just as 15 year old Charley - admirably portrayed by Charles Plummer- is about to enter his. But there's not a lot of gifted future on Charley's horizon; his reality is beset by bleakness, loneliness and poverty, the likes of which is rarely explored - and examined so authentically - in American cinema. I 'd admire the movie for that alone.

The movie then turns into a sort of road trip ( through a landscape of the deprived ) when Charley runs off with Lean on Pete, in part because of his own personal tragedy and in part because the horse is going to be killed for aging out of usefulness to his seedy owner.

There were several other stories that came to my mind when seeing this movie. First was Mark Twain's book on Huckleberry Finn, another poor runaway from 2 centuries ago . The other was Five Easy Pieces: I couldn't help recall a journey through an aimless America by Bobby Dupree- particularly in the scene where Bobby ( and here Charley) stares at himself on the bathroom mirror, searching his own face to try and understand who he is.

But Charley is a younger, more sensitive and more hopeful character than Bobby , though also incredibly resourceful. We may wonder where Charley's resourcefulness comes from and for this viewer that question is finally resolved after we meet a long lost relative. We discover too that Charley, in pursuit of what he sees as his only salvation from his tragic life, becomes a bit of a criminal- lying, stealing, and violent in defense of his property. And even though he's ultimately ( and unwittingly) responsible for the tragedy that besets his best friend, he earns our compassion and empathy. Because, as the journey unfolds, we see he is a hard worker, driven by principles and empathy ( trying to save Pete), and, unlike the homeless population he is so in danger of joining, he has the strength and drive to keep him propelled on his goal of finding meaning, and a loving presence in his life.

I won't spoil the ending, but will say this is a road trip we almost never see in current movies, and that this landscape of those who live below the comfort of a middle class lifestyle, - is a story of an unspoken world we may well note.

I had two small ( very small) quibbles with the movie, however, that kept me from rating it at a full 5 stars. One is, I did not personally find the cinematography of the highest excellence. There were a few scenes that were visually gripping for me. The boy alone with his horse, and the shared bond between them, was nicely portrayed. And the scenes of the prairies had a resonance which a lot of the photography did not (at least for me). The scenes of our wide open spaces made one feel - simultaneously- how large and grand our country is., and yet how lonely and alienating it can be, while offering (ironically) unlimited promise to its people. But overall, this film of a banal reality did not rise ( perhaps purposefully ) to visual excellence for this viewer. Since the story of Charley's exodus remained mesmerizing throughout the entire two hour film, perhaps it doesn't really matter.

There is an end to the movie that is a wonderful resolution, and like Luis, I had tears in my eyes and goosebumps on my skin. But it was not the closing scene between two characters that moved me as much until I heard the finale song that was played on the ending road scene. I cannot think of many movies that have had a song so eloquent and poignant as to what this entire movie had to say to us. Had to look this one up- it was a folkstyle interpretation of R Kelly's "The
World's Greatest." The lyrics and music will long linger in my mind, along with the movie.

In closing , I might note that the only other small ( and likely not pertinent) quibble I had with the movie is that it offered no resolution or glimmer of hope for so many of those harsh and bleak lives of those trapped in the landscape of poverty at the edges of society- other than the words of the closing song. Most of the characters remain ' unseen' - from the hopeless homeless at the shelters to the good hearted waitress who pleads for Charley's freedom- and have no solution or even the thought of a pathway from their plight.

For that, we have to turn to another movie ( or book by the great author , John Steinbeck) and another unlikely hero: Tom Joad - who also made a harsh and bitter exodus from home many decades ago - and who came to a hauntingly similar conclusion as echoed the words of R Kelly's song: "We are the People" - in the Grapes of Wrath.

All in all, four out of five stars for Lean on Pete,

a film worth seeing- and thanks to Luis for recommending it.

Well, aside from his father's prevalent mental illness, his mother definitely acted "off," too. So yeah, with their genes and after growing up in that environment, and his childhood traumas, maybe it's not a surprise he turned out so cold-hearted. And syphilis was a thing in those days too, you're right. :p

If you're a fan of movies dealing with the inner workings of TV news/journalism and professional rivalries of various stripes, this one's for you. Loved the acting, the writing, the subtle dynamic between the three leads, the natural complexity of the characters. I thought the finale could have been better executed, though - but then again, I think it's good that it avoids the trap of a cliche happy ending, where one of the rivals is preferred over the other because one is a "bad guy", and the other is a "good guy." Here we see characters that are not clear-cut bad or good - they are just human beings with their good sides but also their flaws and foibles and professional egos that are simply not compatible with each other. As a result, the love triangle doesn't provide either of the expected resolutions - it simply disintegrates in front of our eyes.

An old mirror has a dark presence living in it which allows the new girl in school, who is constantly bullied for looking like Lydia from Beetlejuice, to exact some revenge on her tormentors. Checks all the boxes for B horror of the time. Recognized quite a bit of the cast because I watch a lot of bad movies from this era. Co-stars Charlie Spradling who I'm a bit of a fan of.

I like the black and grey colours as they're quite traditional – it's certainly a lot more padded out though I suppose. And he looks like a real bruiser – of course that version of Batman has no qualms about killing people either.

Nothing like Texas Chainsaw Massacre as some ads claim; it just happens to have the actor who played the original Leatherface in a very small role. A variety of odd folks run into murdering sickos on the high seas and mayhem ensues. There's an element of ugliness to the movie and some sick humor, and those are huge positives for me that made it worth watching. Unfortunately, it just wasn't that good.

Yeah I love Keaton – he was my Batman . It would have been interesting to see the third film still with him and keeping the same tone.

Built with fat;)

Jim Carrey's Riddler does call him "Fatman" and it wouldn't surprise me if some of the villains derided him in the same way in the Sixties show :). "Fatman and the Boy Blunder" might be a Joker line but my memory of it is hazy.

Asher (2018)

The charismatic performance by Ron Perlman made this film worth a watch. There's not much new territory in the screenplay. Aging hitmen have become a whole story class unto themselves. However a few slight variations provided interest. The underworld characters were predominantly Jewish. Most of the action took place in Syracuse, NY. And the lady who becomes Aher's love interest is introduced totally by accident.

Famke Janssen as the love interest does a commendable job. However, although Janssen is 54, she's still a dish, so an older appearing actor would have made she and Asher's attraction a little more believable. The secondary parts are given room to shine for fine character acting from Jacqueline Bisset, Ned Eisenberg, and Richard Dreyfuss. Bisset especially played against type.

The story holds one's interest throughout, although they took a little too long to bring it to a close, especially at the point where there wasn't much left to tell. The ending was seemingly settled in a gratifying way, but at the final second a single element of ambiguity was introduced, causing the viewer to reflect. My guess is that this was the result of a writer's meeting where someone said, "Hey, we can't use an old-fashioned pat ending. This is 2018. We've got to leave 'em wondering..."

Perlman displays his veteran status. And although he probably doesn't need the work, this film will bump up his demand considerably.

I feel that it is my most successfully realized film, the one that best expresses my interior world. The protagonist even became my alter ego of sorts. He contains all my emotions, my psychology, my nature. He is my portrait in the mirror.
Andrei Tarkovsky

I fell ashamed just thinking I would ever rate any Tarkovsky film. It would be like rating a Bach symphony or a Leonardo painting.

First re-watch and happily surprised to say I enjoyed it more the 2nd time. Its a slog for sure but you can identify readily with Glass and the pure base instinct for survival when it seems all is lost. Great from Leo and I noticed a few more actors than I did on first watch (Arthur from Peaky Blinders! :)). Considering I never realised Fitz was Tom Hardy till the end on 1st watch that's an achievement! :) 9/10

Wasn't expecting too much but I actually enjoyed it a hell of a lot! It has a lot of heart and ambition. The visuals were stunning, the acting was pretty decent (some of the dialogue was a bit clunky or made me cringe a little bit).

I wouldn't praise it as much as Wonder Woman, but it's a vast step forward for DC nonetheless and a pretty solid film in its own right.

Props to Julie Andrews for playing a racist sea creature. Iconic

Great movie. A violent warlord retires, dividing his Kingdom between his three sons. Chaos ensues. Fantastic chaos. Another great looking movie. I'm big on cinematography, especially big, wide panoramic shots and this is another film that visually blows me away. Highly recommend this.

A mixed bag, for sure, but overall I thought it was very good. There were certain aspects of the movie that I found unsatisfying (I wasn't big on the mutant animals thing tbh), or lacking believability, but the visual effects were strikingly beautiful, and the mystery worked quite well. The ending, in particular, was incredibly well done - best part of the movie, by far.

It appears that the movie consciously ditched the element of scientific plausibility, going more for pure atmosphere and the mystery/dread of the unknown (and I liked that) but still, I thought the concept and execution could do with more elaboration and attention to detail.

Genuinely funny adaptation of a French play with Nick Nolte playing the carefree vagrant that ensconces himself into the household of stressed couple Richard Dreyfuss and Bette Midler, and starts to take advantage. Played for laughs so some of the "issues" like the daughters eating disorder are very leaden.

Took my time on getting around to more Jacques Audiard after "A Prophet".

Good story about a "tough" that has issues with wanting to get out of the low-level criminal life life (Rachmanism) and realise a paper dream of becoming a pianist which he had showed a youthful aptitude for. The realism in this movie is more due to the actors and direction rather than the story which is a little bit predictable. Romain Duris as Thomas is a very engaging character.

Good film, 7/10.

Jumanji - Welcome To The Jungle (2018)

https://goo.gl/images/Bc8wrv

Went into this expecting two things: It to suck and me to hate it. Verdict? I didn't despise it and it wasn't a suckfest. Listen by no means is this a good movie but it had some redeemable qualities about it. The biggest anchor this movie had weighing it down was attaching itself to the Jumanji name. If you think for a second I believed Alan Parrish lived in this candyland version of Jumanji you are off your rocker, as they eluded subtly in the film he did. Please. It's a major hurdle if you love the first one like me to get over. My enjoyment would have been much improved if it was just an original title not lazily piggy backing off Jumanji name. But whatever, movie business, I get it 🤮

The Good: I thought the main cast was damn charming and good. All 4 of them kept me engaged and entertained in the movie even after one cliche after another. The dynamic between the 4 major characters actually keeps your interest even though it's uninspiringly unoriginal. I can't deny it is brainless fun that kids will definitely like, specially if you haven't seen the first. The cast is definitely the best part.

The Bad: The Jonas kid. Yikes. Stick to singing. Good try I guess. His charcater was also dumb. Trying too hard to connect to the original. The villain is dumb. The story generaic and shallow. Some dialouge is roll your eyes worthy. Really not a good movie but the 4 leads really save it.

Listen if you haven't seen the first one and are 16 and younger you may love this movie. I can't deny it kept me entertained from it's cast but associating this with the original hurts my feelings and head. Anyways this has been way too long for a Jumanji 2 review.

I'd give it 2 1/2 out of 5....could have been a 3 if it was it's own entity.

I've had this on my watchlist for a while and finally got to it since it's eligible for the horror countdown. It starts out like a 40's noir, with a guy looking for an old love by the name of Laura. He ends up injured and at the house of a crazy incestuous mother and daughter who have previously murdered Laura. They basically use him as a sex slave and these women are severely perverse. It's pretty funny and one of the strangest movies I've ever seen.

The Godafther Part II (Francis Ford Coppola, 1974) rating_5

I have been watching a lot of films over Christmas, including the first two Godfather films again. I saw Part II last night and was reminded of its brilliance. Both films are so rich and full of detail, not just in terms of story but in what each frame holds together.Tthe combination of performance, scenery, music and editing shows how powerful cinema can be in telling such a tragedy. I think when I first saw this film I was a little thrown by the overall structure of it, but like its best mini sequences that expertly cut across parallel storylines, here I felt the full power of two fantastic tales converging. It is the first time I've watched this and found myself perhaps agreeing with those who say it is superior to the first, although both are definite masterpieces.

Cute film. It's the type of story that could have been made in the '40s or '50s: full of romance with a good ending. Could that be why it's made back 8 times it's budget?

An interesting point is that, although Rachel Chu in the story is criticized by her boyfriend's mother as being, "not Chinese, but Chinese American", most of the characters are themselves Chinese Singaporean, not Chinese nationals.

North By Northwest (1959)

Cary Grant really reminds me of George Clooney.

Something about late '50s and '60s films is so comforting to me. I love this time period. The automobiles, the music, the women's hairstyles and outfits, the furniture, the design of the more "modern" architecture...

It's a fairly good movie, but predictable. The bumbling nature of the protagonist annoyed me, although I know that's how he was supposed to act.

It must have been part of the inspiration for the James Bond films, as well as spy spoofs, and that's certainly commendable.

This is actually a total crap movie but yet very fascinating to watch due to the production story. I believe it started out with the goal of being a family adventure type of film and turned into I don't know what. Forget plot and think a bunch of people mixed in with a bunch of real wild animals, mostly big cats. This is when Melanie Griffith got mauled (scene above) turning her into one of the world's greatest butterfaces. She had 50 stitches to the face and was in danger of losing an eye, and she was one of the lucky ones. Her crazy mom Tippi Hedren fractured her leg and was bitten on the neck by a lion. Her psychotic husband, and star and director, Noel Marshall sustained so many injuries that he got gangrene and it took him years to recover. Jan de Bont who would later direct Speed was friggin scalped by a lion resulting in 220 stitches. There were countless other injuries sustained by cast and crew, many of which are shown onscreen. Knowing all of this is part of what makes the movie interesting to watch, along with the animals being completely awe-inspiring. There are some very thrilling scenes knowing the real life stakes. Unfortunately, artistically, it is trash.

I "watched" this yesterday too with my brother. I've only seen a few Black Mirror episodes but I do find it interesting.

I thought the episode was okay - I ended up with...

5/5 game release and game revived at end

...but then went back a few times after that just to explore a few options. Some smart people online have already mapped out the choices pretty well. Overall I found the choice element to be a bit distracting and maybe it could have been realised a bit better and been more darker, but considering its pretty much the first of its kind as you say its certainly something new and interesting.

I do wonder how much I can rate it if I don't take 100% of the different choices - if anything, it seems like the ending you got is the only one I didn't manage (I think you get railroaded to the credits after a while anyway rather than just being allowed to reset from a different point of divergence so I'd have to start from the beginning and follow a map to that particular outcome, which I may or may not do).

Yeah it feels more like a video game akin to Until Dawn rather than a film or even a TV episode. I wouldn't want to give it a rating compared to my normal standards but as far as the concept ofBlack Mirror goes it fits in nicely. As much as it was interesting to go back at the end and change a few choices out of curiosity, it kind of ruined the impact of it all and the end result was the whole thing felt a bit inconsequential, ironically. If I had turned it off after the credits originally hit, I think I would have been happier.

Bo Burnham has made a very gentle, open and fragile depiction of not just eighth grade but of youth in general. There are many recognizable elements to this film, but the way Burnham handles them are with so much care and authenticity that you don’t really feel the clichés becoming clammy or the structure becoming staged. Everything is very natural and calm-like and the world feels small and huge at the same time, which is a very delicate but important balance to pull off for this type of movie.

It honestly wasn’t until the end that I began to feel the fiction-part of this tale. This doesn’t mean that the film was brought to a halt because of it or that it was made really raw and documentary-like up until then, but more that it puts the thoughts and feelings first throughout, rather than the structural pin-points and storybeats, which does become clearer later on, for good and bad. Elsie Fisher gives an honest and honestly quite brilliant performance, complete with all the quirks and questions a girl her age might have. It really feels authentic and the movie lets her breathe as well (how hectic and anxiety-inducing that breathing may be at times hah).

Overall this film captures something special, and through most of its runtime, does so very delicately and succeeds in being obvious and subtle at the same time. It’s a movie that truly feels comfortable being outside the comfort zone because it knows how to portray that part properly. There’s room for fun visual and musical representations of self-reflection and situations known to this age and that’s both fun and fear-inducing - because we are right there with her (again, especially because of the amazing Fisher).

I feel like this film is one to do and say what a lot of films how been trying to, but without the same effect or succes. It may not be the eighth wonder of the teenage world, but it is successful in being a small, simple but satisfying portrayal of your everyday eighth grader... therefore... a not so everyday eighth grade (out of ten) from me.

Gucci.

I can't say I was over impressed with Idris Elba's directorial debut, aside from the original aspect of it being set in Jamaica/London ( with Stephen Graham at his menacing best as a cockney version of True Romance's Drax), there was nothing else original about it, storywise I felt I had seen every twist and turn of the movie a hundred times before in other gangster movies from anywhere but better.. big dramatic moments failed to provide the weight behind them for the punch they wanted and overall it was a bit messy and predictable though it had some moments

Not one of Jack Hills (Coffy) best. An evil sorcerer must sacrifice his first born child to his God unfortunately his wife has twins and she isn't saying which one came out first. Furious the Sorcerer kills his wife, which seems pretty stupid considering she's the only one who knows what he needs (could've at least tortured her for a bit), when suddenly a wizard shows up, saves the twins and hides them until they are old enough to be filmed nude. The rest of the movie involves the evil sorcerer still trying to locate the twins while the twins begin searching for the sorcerer. You get an assortment of goofy characters on their journey including flying lions, monkey warriors, a goat boy, and a gladiator who shares a hair stylist with William Katt. The acting is truly some of the worst I've ever come across. Everything is awful enough to make it somewhat enjoyable.

I agree that Roar isn't a quality film, but I loved it anyway. I wish more people would watch it. My write-up from Movie Tab last year:

I have no idea how to rate Roar, but it feels like essential viewing in its own bizarre, well-intentioned-yet-stupidly-misguided, must-be-seen-to-be-believed sort of way. For those unaware, Roar is an eleven-year labor of love undertaken by Tippi Hedren, her husband and their grown-up children (including Melanie Griffith, whom I had no idea was the daughter of Hedren), which sees the family basically try not to get mauled to death by 100+ untrained lions, tigers, cheetahs, cougars and other big cats, in addition to a couple of pissed-off elephants, in the name of, um, wildlife preservation? Over 70 crew members were injured during production. Scalps were lifted. Windpipes punctured. Faces disfigured. Every scene is fraught with peril. There's a vague outline of a plot, but since the animals basically do whatever they want, most scenes are chaotic and the actors find themselves reacting more than acting. If Roar isn't the most reckless, dangerous, irresponsible film ever made, I don't know what is.

Baby Driver (2017)
4th watch

With a script that’s fast on its feet, visuals that cuts to the beat and car chases with tires that squeak, ‘Baby Driver’ is a winningly childish technical tour de force of a film that has so much fun with its concept that it takes a few watches to catch all the phrases betweeen all the races that you missed the first time around the sound...

You better get ready to gear up and cheer on “Baby” as he shifts in and out of traffic in terrifyingly terrific action sequences that cleanses the soul from the tone deaf trash that keeps crashing onto the movie scene. This is a movie that needs to be seen to be believed to see what was not only dreamed but also achieved because of the brilliance of the people behind the reel.

I guess there’s nothing left than to thank Wright, for the finely tuned driving and dialogue and for turning the entertainment level through the sunroof of a hot red Subaru.

Entertainment-wise it’s both wise and entertaining and for that I give it a favorized rating of...

Enjoyed the second half better than the first. Outstanding acting especially from the supporting cast (not that Kirk wasn't good). The scene of the Roman army getting into formation was outstanding. Knowing Kubricks rep for multiple takes that must've taken a few years to get juuuust right.

2 stars for the first 80 minutes, 4.5 for the last 40 minutes of slice and dice. I liked a lot of the dreamy aspects, the superimposing of the faces was a neat effect, but overall it could have been trimmed up a bit. At one point I felt like the whole movie was being filmed in slow motion. One of Cage's better recent outings.

I probably wouldn't have watched this but I do let my wife pick the movie a couple of times a year. The first hour reminded us of those 48 Hours real life mysteries, and we like those so we enjoyed the movie. I thought the story went off the rails a little, but it had strong dark humor throughout. I'm still not sure what I think of Blake Lively but she was well suited for her role. Anna Kendrick was excellent.

[Eighth Grade]

8/10

I enjoyed reading your review of Eighth Grade, which served as a recommendation to watch the film. After seeing the movie, your review became even more interesting.

I don't generally seek out teen aged angst films, as they tend to be too silly, simple-minded, or slapstick. But as you have pointed out, this movie is the exception.

Elsie Fisher (nice to see the old names come back) gives a very natural and believable portrayal of an 8th grader full of doubt and self consciousness. It'll be interesting to see whether Fisher is simply adept at this type of roll, or whether her obvious talent will shine when acting other character personalities.

The writer/director Bo Burnham seems to understand the subject matter and the emotions that are featured in it. The narrative feels truthful.

IMO the one minor drawback of the film is the father, played by Josh Hamilton. Hamilton certainly has acting talent, but it was the way the character was written which irked me. He was smarmy, overly caring, and tried too hard to be a pal, rather than a parent. In real life it would be surprising if the daughter gave him any credence whatsoever. The part was aggravating enough to put me in mind of James Dean's fawning father (Jim Backus) in Rebel Without a Cause.

If for no other reason the film was worth a watch for Fisher's performance. It'll be interesting to see what projects are next for both Fisher and Burnham.

Aquaman

3.5

A lot has been said about the direction DC is going with their 'universe'. I have no idea where they intend to take it now, but I'm glad I got to see James Wan have fun with Aquaman. The only way I can tell people to prepare for this movie is to have fun and embrace how cheesy the film is. It's an adventure movie with a guy who talks to fish. You're going to hear weird names like King Orm, King Nereus, Vulko and weird phrases like Ocean Master. Embrace these things and Aquaman will be a fun, entertaining movie for you. It's not without its faults, but Aquaman is the best movie DC has made for their universe.

A man finds a woman washed ashore, he brings her into his lighthouse and soon discovers she is not from his world. That doesn't stop them from falling in love and having a child. This is forbidden though and soon people from her world come looking for her. In an effort to save her son and the man she loves, she disappears back into the water. Years later that son grows up to become Aquaman. Now he must go to Atlantis and claim the throne before his half-brother brings a war to the surface.

There are some character aspects from the Justice League movies that crawl their way into Aquaman, but those are just small bits of character dialogue that I didn't care for. Aquaman's bad-ass surfer-boy attitude is one that doesn't necessarily jive with me. But it is toned down a bit here and instead the film focuses on his reluctance to help the people that took his mother away from him. Momoa looks good on the screen, he fills the frame nicely, bringing a menacing vibe with muscles. His entrance scene involves an attack in a sub and it introduces us to the damage this guy can do. It's also the first of many shots involving him with his back to the audience and looking over his shoulder. That is just one of many cheesy aspects this film throws at us. This is where he makes his first big enemy, a guy who would later become Black Manta. Nice to see a villain who is actually tangible. The costume looks goofy, but cool. He's real, compared to the play-dough things we got in Justice League, yuck.

An impressive cast; Willem Dafoe, Amber Heard, Patrick Wilson, Nicole Kidman, Dolph Lundgren with voice work from Djimon Hounsou, John Rhys-Davies and Julie Andrews. They all do a decent job trying to spit out funny dialogue while underwater.

The film feels like an Indian Jones type adventure flick. Aquaman and Meera, a role that could have been played by any good looking actress, must find a special Trident, one that will unite the 7 underwater kingdoms and make the wielder of it the true King of the Ocean. To get it, they must find clues, decipher them and journey from one location to the next. In doing this, Wan gives us an exciting chase sequence in Italy and a horror-esque scene that could have been from his earlier works.

Wan channels his Fast & Furious style here, giving us insane spectacle with a wink towards the audience. He knows this is a comic book movie, he disregards Snyder's realistic and dark tone for something light and fun. It follows more in line with Wonder Woman than Batman V Superman. Maybe DC should take note that the two most successful movies in their franchise are these two movies.

Wan is able to get creative here with the look of Atlantis and unique creature designs. As I said earlier, he's actually able to dive back in his horror roots for one scary sequence involving creatures gone mad. There are moments in this movie that look like comic book panels and Wan pays particular attention to scale. There are creatures in this movie that are enormous and you feel that scale perfectly. The final act becomes an all out war between underwater sea creatures and I didn't mind it, but I feel that others might complain about the "CGI-Mess" that explodes on the screen.

Aquaman isn't perfect, but it does try to be. It's exactly what I expected.

The Demonologist (J.M. Brian Krause is perfectly cast with his experience and here's hoping that there will be a potential sequel.

A story about a serial killer told in episodic terms (as is von Triers want). It's probably the most accessible LVT film for a while and Matt Dillon did well as the titular anti-hero. It's not funny enough to be black humour and not shocking enough to be truly disturbing.

While Matt Dillon did a great job in his part, this genre has been done to death (pardon the pun). At certain points I thought it was a later term Hertzog movie.

Watcheable, but standing ovations at Cannes? Good grief. 5/10

I've had this on my watchlist for awhile because I like director Ben Wheatley. I finally got to it because it's eligible for the horror countdown. Even if I loved it, I don't consider it horror so I wouldn't vote for it. It's certainly dark, and also psychedelic. A meager budget was used, and while filming in black and white was a good idea, it wasn't enough. There's not any character to the look of the movie; not good when it's filmed in a field and completely during daytime hours. The acting is decent and there are good moments, but it doesn't quite add up to a good film.

The film is sometimes good spectacle, particularly the scene with the balrog and the escape from Moria. Overall it's just an average entertainment film, nothing more nothing less. Some of the acting performances are mediocre and I dislike Peter Jackson's directing style. I'd much rather see some of his newer passion projects like They Shall Not Grow Old.

Drags on through some parts. The 2.5+ hr runtime is too long.
I'm at a loss for words, really.

I would have liked to see people's opinions on this in a HOF, but I don't like it enough to nominate it, and don't want to subject anyone to that runtime without their prior consent. :p

If you compare this and Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972) ... both are out-dated, colonialist and somewhat misogynistic... but are very impressive on a technical level, and showcase beautiful cinematography of the Amazonian rainforest.

Totally simple movie but this is exactly what I was in the mood for. Nice and violent and very easy on the eye.

A 1975 rape-revenge western that feels quite familiar (Kill Bill-ish). Newlywed Mormons on the trail run into some very bad dudes who rape Jessi, kill her husband then shoot her and leave her for dead. She recovers and begins her revenge with the help of a badly bearded rancher and a few other outlaw women she meets up with on her way. This isn't very good, some of the scenes/subplots leave you scratching your head, but it isn't boring.

I usually don't like to describe movies this way, I think it's cheap, but this movie sucked. Definitely the worst thing I've sat through in a loooong time and up there for worst ever. I guess it's a sexploitation slasher that's very light on the sex and the slash. What are ya left with? Half a star for because Claudia Jennings is in it and half a star for an ending so god awful that it has to be seen to be believed.

Evil Dead II (1987)

Boring slapstick that has nominal connection to the first film and primarily serves as a prologue to Army of Darkness. Inferior in every way to its predecessor.

Coup De Torchon (1981)

Absolutely no idea how this ended up in my watchlist but I'm glad I watched it. Really dark humour in this almost nourish type film, about a lone policeman in a small African town. Also contains a young Isabelle Huppert who, along with Philippe Noiret, was excellent.

Good show.

The Sisters Brothers (2018)

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/8/8d/The_Sisters_Brothers.png/220px-The_Sisters_Brothers.png

Enjoyable light-handed western about a couple of brothers who are assassins looking for a man with the formula (it seems) to make locating gold simpler during the California gold rush. All round watcheable but not very gripping. Realise this is Jacques Audiard's frist English language film but that wasn't a problem. I expected a wee bit more from the story and actors. 6/10

For all the hype this got, I was underwhelmed. The river scene was where I threw in the towel. I give them credit for a different take, but just makes me wonder how much soft money goes into some of these website reviews.

I thought John C. Reilly stole the show. Seems like he's getting a lot of good work lately. J. Phoenix didn't seem to fit his role; and J. Gyllenhaal was wasted on his.

Hefty actors, lightweight story; although it holds one's interest to see how it ends. I'm beginning to think Phoenix is best in stoner type rolls, or ones where he plays a character of lesser intelligence.

Happy to see your heads-up re this film, we watched it last night. The compelling story of Forrest Tucker, a gentleman bank robber who escaped from incarceration 16 times, could have been presented in a dozen different ways.

This was a fitting presentation for Robert Redford's swan song (he's announced his retirement). The role allows him --even at age 82-- to exude his patented boyish charm and understated conviction. Sissy Spacek is delightful as Jewel-- Tucker's eventual lady friend. And Casey Affleck gives a first rate performance as the pragmatic policeman who pursues Tucker-- but with admiration.

It is a small movie about a fascinating subject, that avoids kitschy displays of gore and violence. I could do with many more like it.

The Deer Hunter (1978)

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/5/57/The_Deer_Hunter_poster.jpg

(contains spoilers)
The movie is not about the war itself but about the effects of war on relationships and sanity.
The wedding scene was so long I felt bad I didn't bring a gift. Sure it develops character, but it's inefficient in the way it does so. The film improves when the characters enter 'the war'.
The Russian Roulette scene is regarded as one of the best movie scenes of all time, and it shows. The acting and the tension in the scene is phenomenal.
Michael's (DeNiro) troubled attempts to blend back into civilian life; his tentative romance with Linda (Streep) is really engaging and well-acted, as is his inability to reconnect with his friends.
"Screenwriter Deric Washburn didn’t interview a single veteran to research the script."
Of all the documentaries testimonies, memoirs I've seen,
I've never come across anyone who even knows of someone who went insane to the point that Nicky (Walken) did.
It makes those last scenes a bit inauthentic for me. The final scene keeps it very real but also very depressing.

In short; Great acting, an epic scene, slow pace and an overly long runtime.

A teenager, already with enough problems, finds himself having a new problem when he begins foreseeing deaths of those close to him. When one of his best friends die after a vision, he is even more outcast and copes with having to deal with both life and death. Cameron Monaghan gives out a great performance and it helps that he has this natural chemistry with his co-stars. I highly recommend this as a good way to start the new year!

A Quiet Place - 3.5
A well done sci/fi horror film. Character issues aside, the film has some intense sequences and a great premise

Ralph Breaks The Internet - 3
Not as well thought out as the first film, but the tale of friendship is strong and some good laughs are had in the internet world, specifically when they visit Disney

Blockers - 2.5
Typical comedy here with gross out jokes and hit or miss humour. I didn't hate it, but it is completely forgettable.

The Week Of - 1
Another Sandler-Netflix special. Not funny, cringe worthy and inconsistent. Rock damages his hands, which he needs as a surgeon, but they are fine two scenes later. Missed opportunity here, could have been more comedy based or more drama based, the juggling act of both is a failure

Paddington 2 - 4
Wes Andersonish, the film is enjoyably fun with cuteness overload. I was surprised by how much I liked the first one and not surprised by how much I liked this one

The Princess Switch - 2
Hallmark TV holiday special. The two switch places, fall in love and blah blah blah. Boring, but my wife and mother enjoyed it, so there is an audience out there for this type of movie

The Holiday Calendar - 2
Slightly better than The Princess Switch, but not enough to warrant a higher rating. Kat Graham makes this one bearable.

Agree with all those points GulfportDoc. I was thinking that John C. Reilly (as his production company produced this among others) was not the man to have the "core" of the story.

Gyllenhaal was wasted as you say but the story itself was so thin it would have taken a Jack Nicholson in his younger days to imbue it with meaning.
