The is the second time I watched this movie in this year and I am impressed again.
It is truly a monumental achievement in animation and like The Pyramids, The Great Wall of China, Beethoven's 9th and Tolstoy's War and Peace, among mankind's most precious cultural heritages.
Rating: 5, obviously.

Midnight in Paris - 4.5
This is one of those beautiful films that leaves you with a smile on your face. Great movie with an outstanding performance from Owen Wilson, who I feel is quite underrated as an actor. His acting in this film was nothing short of excellent.
I can't remember the last time I enjoyed a movie as much as this one. And believe it or not this was my first Woody Allen movie, and if the rest of his films have a similar style to this, then he's definitely going to become one of my favourite directors of all time.

Blood Diamond (2006)
The film is maybe a little sentimental at the end (the part in London), but it was an enjoyable ride! It also contains some very strong performances from Leonardo DiCaprio (I really liked his accent in this movie) and Djimon Hounsou. It was also very well directed and it had some really intense scenes, that are really worth seeing.
I recommend it to people who are interested in the infernal situations in some parts of Africa and of course to all fans of DiCaprio!

The only reason I don't give it a 10 is because it's not the type of film you can watch over and over. For a single viewing experience, it was superb. As an ex drunk, I was perhaps more immersed in it than most would be.

Argo. 9/10 And for the same reason cricket gave---it's a single viewing deal for me, but because I already knew the outcome (despite that, it's extremely tense) and saw it replayed in the movie, I don't want to sit through it again. Still, a great movie.

Pitfall (1962)
8.5/10 - The desolate landscape sets up the eerie aura of Pitfall and gives the film an alienated and ghost-like quality in itself. The haunting experimental musical score by Toru Takemitsu is astounding and sneaks in a menacing break from the drab landscapes.

Reservoir Dogs - 4.5
This was QT's first movie, but it's so good and so well-made that it makes it seem like he'd been making movies for at least one decade before he made it. This was the third time I watched it, and I definitely enjoyed it more than the previous two times, and damn, I find it so hard to rate a Tarantino movie as his second best (his masterpiece being Pulp Fiction, of course, and I don't think that this will ever change). I am definitely going to have to see all his work again though before I can form an opinion.
Anyway, back to Reservoir Dogs, it is safe to say that I love every minute of this movie. I mean, it is by no means flawless, or perfect, but I simply cannot think of anything that I'd add or remove from the movie. The dialogue is superb, which is what I mostly love about the film, each performance is brilliant; I especially love Michael Madsen and Steve Buscemi, the music is pretty good and I also like the camera work, colours and the atmosphere of the movie. It's made on a low budget which is what makes its achievements even more impressive to me. My favourite scene has to be the escape of Mr. Pink. For me that scene is just perfect, it just looks so real.

Wonderful documentary with tons of incredibly gifted and knowledgeable guests. It talks a lot about how improved camera and editing technologies have expanded the potential for filmmakers to specifically tailor their films to their imaginations. So many sequences in so many films simply would not have been possible in the past and this film brings out several instances of that. It's also an effective but succinct study on the evolution of the art of cinematography in general. There are some people posting in some threads on this website who need to see this before they continue to argue against the cold hard truth.

Well what you see is what you get with The Raid: Redemption. There's not enough substance for you to even care about the dialogue scenes, which are like nails on a chalkboard. The choreography of the extensive fight scenes is without a doubt impressive, and makes the film watchable from start to finish.

I wanted this film to entertain me and make me laugh, and I had plenty of laughs and fun until the last half hour when it started to fall apart. This is why I refuse, at least for now, to rate this movie higher than 3.5, or 7/10. It has a pleasant start but it has some sort of a bitter ending, which in the end disappointed me a little.
Anyway, for me the positives definitely outweigh the negatives, this is a pretty good movie and I'm glad I saw it. It is well written, well directed and the performances are pretty good. The camera work was also top notch.

I watched an old turkey the other night, I Hate Your Guts. Despite the title, it was a pretty good movie. Its about racial violence in the south when the desegregation laws came in. It was one of William Shatner's first films. I was never much impressed with him as an actor, except for Star Trek, but he gave a great performance in this one as a slimy creep.
Whatever It Takes (2000)
Watched it earlier, didn't expect much from it but it ended up being quite funny. Seems to be a relatively overlooked and little known film. Not a classic but a harmless way to spend 95 or so minutes. I'd give it about a 7/10.

I caught 'Hulk (2003)' on TV this morning, I missed the beginning and I didn't see the ending either, but I'd say that I saw at least 60-70% of the movie, and from what I saw I would rate it 2.5. Average, but not awful. I had no idea Ang Lee made it.
Also, last night I caught the ending of 'College Road Trip' with Martin Lawrence, and I had already seen that film in the past. It just reminded me how truly awful it is, it's one of those movies that will insult your intelligence and torture your brain for 90 minutes, which will feel like 180 minutes. Why do they even make such films, seriously?

Tried to watch 'Pirate Radio.' - 3/10
It took a great premise - a pirate radio station off the shores of the UK in 1966 - and through poor writing and directing, immediately brought in all the cliched situations you can think of.
There was nowhere for the impressive cast to go.
Stopped watching after half an hour.

Evil Aliens. A dark comedy about space aliens. Blood and guts from beginning to end, guts ripped out, arms and legs torn off, the aliens getting chopped with a combine, one scene shows a guy getting his a-hole reamed out with a 2" drill but it was filmed in such a way that it was kind of a sick humor. I liked it, but I wouldnt want to watch it again.

The action choreography was cool. Gina Carano plays it a little too stiff for my taste and - since just about every frame is zoomed in on her trademark smirk - the movie disappoints me in that regard. I'd be surprised if she keeps getting big roles like this.
Overall, an enjoyable film. I wouldn't call it particularly good.

Husband and Wives (1992)
This is the notorious Allen movie with the last appearance of Mia Farrow in any of his films (shortly after filming she found out he was sleeping with their adoptive daughter).
It is one of these Woody Allen classics where married couples start thinking about their lifes and because of that all kind of situations begin to unfold. Add some great humor with that and some clever dialogue and you have a great movie! It's also quite an experimental movie with its handheld camera and its abrupt cuts in the middle of scenes. It reminds me of Lars Von Trier's style of filming. It worked great here. Woody Allen stays one of my all time favorite film directors and writers!

I just watched this and it's an INSTANT favorite of mine! Woody Allen, you are a genius! What an awesome movie!
The picture exposes some really dark ideas and situations (life vs art) while it also contains some of the funniest scenes I've seen in my life ("Don't Speak!")!
I think it's now my second favorite Woody Allen movie after Crimes and Misdemeanors, but it may rise above it in the future. It's the third film of Allen I'm giving a 10/10 and I've seen 15 of his films. I didn't dislike one of them as yet.

Sort of a documentary version of The Guru (2002).
Vikram Gandhi, a filmmaker from New Jersey, takes on the guise of a guru to prove that gurus are false prophets, moves to Arizona and quickly gains a band of followers.
Paradoxically, his charade leads to insight, not just for his disciples, but for himself - and for the viewer of this documentary.
Humorous, honest and moving.

I came across a reference to this film by chance and it sounded interesting. A satire of the US military whose release was delayed because it coincided with 9-11.
Set in 1989, in that brief window of time at the end of the Cold War when US demilitarization was a real possibility, I was intrigued.
There was little funny about it. There was no way for the good cast to transcend the lame script. And it was completely predictable.

Of course, that was the context - but I knew going into the movie, from the trailers, that it was more specifically about the CIA concocting a fictitious movie production in order to save a few hostages who had temporarily got away.
So 'an exhaustive recount of the hostage crisis' wasn't among my expectations, and fortunately that's not what I saw on screen.

Rushmore (1998)
Bill Murray is great and the main character is also funny as hell. It has a different style than other comedies and yet has so many familiar things in it. It's hard to describe what makes Anderson's comedies so good, but it just seems to work.
It's only the second film I've seen from Wes Anderson and although I didn't like this one as much as The Royal Tenenbaums, it is fair to say that I like his style of filmmaking. He is yet another interesting director I will be able to explore with much pleasure and curiosity. I'm looking forward to it!

Hard Eight (1996)
(Sydney)
This is Paul Thomas Anderson's first feature film and just like all of his other movies it is awesome!
I'm not going to give away the whole plot, but basically it's about a past badguy who tries to deal with the mistakes he made in his own particular way. It's also a story about characters, the relationships between them and how they behave in several unusual situations.
The story unfolds against the background of casinos, bars and motels in a very stylish and interesting way. It's really my kind of movie as I'm a big fan of these type of locations, certainly when it's used by such an amazing director as PTA.
It is yet another candidate for my top 25 list of the 90s (although it will be hard, because there are many contenders).

A good Western, but not one of my favorite Howard Hawks films. The stakes never feel that high, maybe because the pacing is off and there is no sense of urgency. It's an attractive flick (not entirely because of Angie Dickinson, but she helps) but overall I was a little disappointed. I probably let my expectations get too high, because it's consistently regarded as one of the best Westerns. In the High Noon-Rio Bravo showdown, I'm going to lean toward the former and it's more cynical, and to me, realistic, viewpoint.

Blood Simple. (1984)
This is an unbelievably sweet movie full of suspense and with a very intelligent script full of twists and misunderstandings. The music score was also very likable and suitable for the atmosphere. I've now seen 9 films from the Coen Brothers and I think this is my favorite so far (although some of the others are very close). It's so raw and yet so well crafted that it becomes absolutely irresistible to me! Frances McDormand is also very nice looking in this. I didn't know she was such a beauty in her younger years.

Bringing Out te Dead (1999)
Martin Scorsese once again proved to me that he's probably the best living director at this moment.
The story is enjoyable. It's about a paramedic (played by a good Nicolas Cage) who has troubles with his past failures, in particular one including a young girl. He keeps seeing her 'ghost' everywhere and he starts looking for a certain distraction or even redemption. He's also an alcoholic, a coffee addict and a chain smoker. Together with a partner (there are three during the whole film) he goes on the streets with an ambulance trying to 'save' people.
This all sounds very heavy and even boring, but it is NOT! There is a lot of comic relief to keep it lighter and the filthy neighbourhood where it all takes place, makes the story very juicy. But the most important thing is that it is all shown with brilliant camera work and very inventive direction. There were some scenes where I actually had to stop myself from licking my fingers, because they tasted so good.
It was a wonderful late night experience!

The Book of Eli (2010) Great, post-apocalyptic flick with Denzel Washington traveling on foot through a blasted landscape, carrying the vital book of the title that soon attracts the evil intentions of a terrific (as usual) Gary Oldman. Lots of action, some supernatural elements, and great acting by all, including Mila Kunis. I only say this about her because of the general consensus (at least as far as I've read) that she is not that great of an actress. Having only seen her in this and That '70s Show, I can only speak for those and I've liked her in both, especially this one. 8/10
Space Cowboys (2001) Clint Eastwood directed and stars in this one, about four aging airmen who are called back into action to stop a Russian satellite from its decaying orbit around Earth. Very entertaining, with a top-notch cast including Tommy Lee Jones, James Garner, Donald Sutherland, Marcia Gay Harden, James Cromwell, and William Devane. One of the final sequences, involving Jones, is a wowser! Very entertaining from start to finish. 8/10

This was very enjoyable. It had some nice animation and although I'm not really a gamer, I got most of the references and I really liked the story! It was a bit in the style of Toy Story and Monster Inc. in the sense that it creates a whole imagination world out of something rather superficial at first glance. I love that kind of fantastical films and certainly when it's well executed as in those films I mentioned. I would recommend it to all the animation fans out there.

I expected to watch two movies tonight (I also wanted to watch Antichrist), but I'm not going to do it, because the movie I just saw, made an impression on me that I want to keep for a little while. I don't want to ruin it with watching another film immediately after it. I'm analyzing this one a little further tonight.
Barton Fink (1991)
Well, what can I say? The Coen Brothers can do everything.
This time they surprised me with a somehow surrealistic film about a playwright who tries to make it in Hollywood and signs a contract at Universal Pictures. From then on this movie becomes art (in my opinion) and you can start speculating about almost everything that happens. By adding some very poetic events and dialogue to the story, the Coen Brothers take you on a travel through their mind. They offer us some formidable scenes where we can make something from with our own personal feelings.
My personal favorite moments were the 'hell scene' with all the fire, the scenes with Jack Lipnick and of course the poetic final scene where he experiences the wonderful painting that was hanging on his wall during his stay in the hotel.
I personally think this movie is about "ideas", "intellectualism" and the way Hollywood deals with it, but there are plenty of other layers we can explore. We can for example also fantasize about hell and satan (I love the 666-moment in the elevator) or even anti-semitism and nazism, etc.
It is sure a movie you can talk about for a very long time, because there are so many things left to the imagination.
They mixed this dramatic surrealism with some very sophisticated (and sometimes absurd) and 'classic Coen' humor in the dialogue and in the key situations.
This is certainly a film that will stay in my mind for a very long time. I'm very happy I could experience this tonight.

you didn't rate it!! i loved this movie and i'll just say i give it an 8.5/10, it got a little sentimental and corny, but in a good way that didn't ruin the movie for me as it often does.
Anyway, last two movies I watched-
Dark Horse (2011) - 6.5/10 - i liked the movie alot but the ending was completely vague and angered me. it didn't explain things i thought were going to be explained, and didn't reach any type of conclusion or have closure of the story. but everything else was really good.
Moonrise Kingdom - 8.5/10 - great story, directing as usual, and i think the actors were unorthodox (except Frances McDormand, but i was glad to see her in something besides a Coen brothers film). it wasn't as good as i was expecting though, but i was comparing it to Royal Tenanbaums which is one of my favorite movies

Not as good as I was expecting but when is it ever? The floor being levelled by gattling type guns was a ruiner; there's also a scene which seems to promise of a high impact, slow-mo portrait shot of a body hitting the ground from altitude but the shot cuts to a head-on from the ground (as though transparent surface) of the head splitting open. Irritation plus!

I think my rating would be around 3.5 (which for me is "more-than-moderately impressive"), but it's been 6 years since I saw it. Since I noticed you've been enjoying Oshima's films, have you seen The Sun's Burial? Feels a bit closer to those early Imamuras (pimps and prostitutes, but no pigs), but with lovely color cinematography.

That's one of his most accessible movies. Check out The Draughtsman's Contract. My favorite is Prospero's Books, but it helps if you know The Tempest.
I'm watching Drowning by Numbers next, and then A Zed & Two Noughts, but I'll go look for downloads of those two right now. I'm open to any and all Greenaway after The Cook, The Thief, His Wife & Her Lover. It was ****ing brilliant.

Antichrist (2009)
It's hard to write something about this film after you just saw it for the first time, because it has a very heavy concept, but I'll try anyway.
It certainly is beautifully shot and it has an interesting storyline with quite some depth. I recognized some deep layers within the story. First of all it obviously has some bible references, but behind that there are themes like egoism, depression (obviously), guilt, the catholic church and its history, the nature of men and women, etc.
I must warn you. The film has some 'disturbing' scenes and are certainly not for people who can't handle those kind of graphic scenes. For me some of those scenes really had some significance, though.
The scene where 'She' cut off her clitoris was particularly interesting (and I don't mean graphically speaking), because first of all it was showing her guilt towards the whole incident in the beginning of the movie. It was because of her enjoyment of sexual intercourse that she didn't save her son. Making herself immune to that kind of pleasure was her last desperate attempt of expelling the evil that was taking her over. When you really want to grave deep you can even say that it is a metaphor of the (former) contempt of the Church for the whole matter (sex solely for pleasure). You can even think about abortion during that prologue scene, but that may be pushing it too far.
It is certainly a very interesting movie to analyze, but if you're not a fan of graphically disturbing scenes you should stay away from it, because it is a big part of the film (certainly in the third act).
My opinion is that Lars Von Trier is a very gifted director and storyteller, who is not afraid to take risks. The next film I'm going to watch of his hand will probably be Dogville. I'm already looking forward to it.
P.S. Visually it was also extremely well made:

A quick question for everyone who posts in this thread regularly (which I'm sure has been asked before): why don't you post your movie ratings in the Movie Tab (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?t=9906&page=812)? It's been an on-going thread for years and pretty much has the exact same idea as this one.

I look upon this more as a 'small review'-thread, with more room for discussion (because it's part of the discussion forum).
The movie tab topic is more like:
Casablanca (1942) - 5
Chinatown (1974) - 5
Barbie in the Nutcracker (2001) 3
etc.
Not really. I post that way since my stroke but earlier I wrote in-depth (briefish) reviews there with discussion.

Coen brothers night, because I did horribly on the quiz but love the movies I've seen of theirs.
Blood Simple - 8.5/10 as far as horror movies go
I don't exactly care for this genre of movie, so I'm a bit biased. But I loved the opening/credits scene, and also the twist of the story. I thought the acting was great and it had some great lines/monolouges. "You know what IS funny?" And the lighting was great, as well as some awesome camera shots. It was a classic horror film in my opinion, over all, which is good and bad; i will say it was very well done and a good horror film, but I just don't really like them that much. But I gave it credit where credit is due. Oh, and i LOVED the score, that song is fantastic.
Barton Fink - 9/10
I'm stopping myself from giving this a 9.5, mostly because I want to save 9.5 for movies that take my breath away, and 10 for something I may never see.
There was a recent review/rating of this movie on this thread, and I think they said it perfectly, that it is art. This type of film is why I love movies. And while not everything was explained exactly, it was done in a way you basically understood the idea but there's still room for interpretation (again, example of art, obvious symbolism yet not defined). Tony Shahloub (Geisler, not Geezler) is hilarious and such a good actor, I don't know why I haven't seen more of him. (side note: his role of the defense attorney in The Man Who Wasn't There is amazing).

Greenaway's style and the way he constructs his shots is right up my alley. The composition of each shot is so particular and exact, it gives his films the appearance of a painting in motion. Drowning By Numbers is visually arresting, and has a quirky and complex narrative that gives it a grotesque charm.

The Master (2012)

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-TeVQIMKa3sU/UTMBunJWb4I/AAAAAAAAIuk/jjn5O6P7_is/s1600/The+Master+2.jpg
I've now completed Paul Thomas Anderson's filmography (feature films) and I officially LOVE all his movies! This one was certainly no exception.
This film triumphs visually, musically, acting-wise (also because of the great characters) and narratively! It is one big bomb of quality.
Some memorable moments were: the moments with the naked woman of sand; the 'model' walking around the store, trying to sell her fur coat with the 50s music on the background; the first 'session' with The Master; the discussion between the master and John More; the jail scene; Freddie walking from the wall to the window; the motorcycle scene; the scene in the cinema where he gets the 'call' (dreamed or not...); The last meeting with The Master; The final scene; etc.
It's basically a wonderful, subtle character study of a war veteran (Freddie Quell) who tries to find a kind of 'peace' in his tortured soul. One of his drunk nights brings him to a ship where he comes into contact with a group of people who call themselves 'The Cause'. They are led by a charismatic leader, named 'The Master'. After some friendly chats and some psychological/hypnotic sessions, their personalities start connecting in a strange kind of way. Freddie starts to believe in 'The Cause' and its vague methods and ideas and follows The Master in everything he does. He hopes he can find his own peace of mind with the help of these ideas (subconsciously).
During the course of the story, however, he meets a lot of people who question the ideas of The Master. At first he fights those people (literally), but at a certain point he begins to realize that all the ideas of 'The Cause' are empty, meaningless and NOT the truth and peace he is looking for. He drives away to freedom and after another disappointment in real life and a last visit to The Master, he becomes his own drunk self again (with some more experience and less agression in him) and continues his fickle life course...
Brilliant.
There are of course way more layers to the story (religious and political layers for example), but the main story itself was already very interesting and appealing to me.

I was also fascinated by The Master. I felt it was an excellent character study of one type of person who is drawn towards a cult-like following and, as you say, the conflicts that can arise - much in the same way that There Will Be Blood was a masterful character study of a greed/competition-driven man.
Joaquin Phoenix's performance was incredible, and Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams were great as well.

Agreed.
I have a slight feeling - although with no real evidence to back it - that the film will go down as a great in years to come.
People have found problems with the film, especially those who found it incoherent. But many films over the years have had the same problems - Kubrick 2001 and even Coppola's Apocalypse Now - but they are cited as some of the greatest.

Fantastic visual techniques that match up quite well with the existential questions implied and in some cases asked outright.
Before this, I had only seen The Thin Red Line and Days of Heaven from Malick. I found TToL superior to Days of Heaven with certainty and perhaps more intriguing than The Thin Red Line. I'll need to watch TTRL again, but at this point I'm not sure TToL is "better," though it's certainly close and both are magnificent works.

I just rewatched Blue Velvet for the first time since it originally came out. I enjoyed it even more this time. An ageless film (aside, perhaps, from Laura Dern's character's use of the word really to mean 'definitely' or 'I agree' - so very 1980s).
Blue Velvet is an exploration of darkness and light. At first it displays the sensibility of a film-noir mystery combined with those pesky kids from Scooby Doo, but you know - being a David Lynch film with Dennis Hopper - things will soon get delightfully weird. The protagonist, played by Kyle MacLachlan, investigates the dark side not only of his seemingly quiet middle America town, but also of himself.
A taut script and tight directing by David Lynch. Beautifully filmed, but a few very noticeable continuity errors are momentarily distracting.

A good, old-fashioned science fiction film. It's good to see an up and coming director like Duncan Jones tackle traditional sci-fi tropes in Moon and Source Code. Neither of them are great, and it was somewhat ridiculous for the DVD case of Moon to compare it to 2001: A Space Odyssey (but the marketing people have to write something, I suppose). But it's a solid and entertaining film and it shows the director's potential.

I saw this movie the other night and personally I thought this was one of the worst comedies I have ever seen. All of the actors were unlikable, first off the comedian (Rebel Wilson) was doing the serious part for reason's I cannot see they cast Kirsten Dunst as the lead female. I just got really irritated with the whole thing. I wont go into detail about the plot (which was really stupid anyway) but they all seem like 4 unlikely friends and the only thing in common is they all do coke... well except the one getting married.

Typically I hate musicals. So I would this one too. Au contraire. This one was actually moving. And beautiful. Not just because of the gorgeous Catherine Deneuve. The colors were vibrant. It was also sad. Like "You will never have what you used to have" sad. But that's important, because you will never have what you used to have. That's life, and the whole door opening after the other closed thing is prevalent here too.

Worst is pushing it but I can see why some wouldn't like it at all and I agree with you on the somewhat unpleasant leads(except for Rebel's character and I was disappointed she didn't have a bigger part - I thought she was going to be one of the leads). I didn't find the three too unpleasant though and I warmed to them slightly over the course of the film. But yes I found myself asking throughout the film, "these women are still 'good friends'"?

Now I really didnt have high hopes for this movie and it really didnt disappoint. First of all I didnt think the acting was that bad Karl Urban was pretty good as Judge Dredd. I remember reading the comics and he was a monotone character so I think he did it justice. As for the story it is basically a story about narcotics they may as well called this bad boys 3 with judge dredd. I did like how they threw around the different gangs though sort of like the warriors. Anyway I did not enjoy it as it seemed to much of the same.
