I am having a hard time making up my mind on this one. The acting and dialogue are fine enough, but there seems to be something missing. Much of magic and emotion that permeated DnC is absent here.
An enjoyable piece, but ultimately very forgettable.

From the top 100 noirs list, a broke schmuck who thinks he's stealing $200, ends up with $30,000 and a bunch of trouble as a result. Pretty good flick, a short running time, and it ends with a nice little chase and shootout.
Mountains May Depart 3.5
A woeful third act nearly undoes the greatness that came before it. A solid film overall though.

Bergman seamlessly combines theater, opera, and cinema into one beautiful concoction. Out of the eighteen or so Bergman films I've seen, this one ranks somewhere near the top. Highly recommended for fans of classical music.

You can say what you want about these movies, but there is just something about them. And for the haters, that skydive/mountainside 30-40 minute action sequence tho.
And while Fast Five was at times serious but mostly fun, and while Fast Six took it a little too serious, I love how Seven seems to finally embrace the campy/cheesy soap opera that it really wants to be. I hope 8 continues this path...

Mojo, I never knew that Popstar was a satire of modern day pop and it's central stars, I initially thought it was a sappy drama about a fictional artist. Now I'm interested in checking it out.
Drama, it definitely ain't. Silly comedy, it is.
There will be laughs. I can guarantee you that.

Wake me when he makes his Pain & Gain
Oh my God that's possibly his worst film... I'm sure Zombie already made that. It's probably H2.
That may be the reason why we split on this movie.
That movie offended me like no other really have. Not just because it was rude and cruel, especially considering it's a true story. It also glorified violence and torture and I just didn't find that funny at all. I guess I could have enjoyed it as sort of an exercise in bad taste, but I thought the movie was so bad and poorly made that everything felt even more offensive...
To some extent though, I can agree about the fact that his movies never downright suck, but are just extremely mediocre or whatever, but it seems like, with time, he has turned more into straight up awfulness... at least for me. Transformers 4 was atrocious.
The reason why I laughed was I thought you were being sarcastic. You just don't strike me as a type a fella who'd like it. Isn't it about body building or something (I didn'e see it)?
I thought the first Transformers movie was pretty good. Hell, it used to be in my top 100.
I have a question, if anyone would care to answer. :) Remember that scene when John rips his shirt and a S sign is beneath it? What the hell was that?

I kind of was but I did like it, far from loved it. It is a crime film though and has lots of humor. Both of those things are in my wheelhouse.

Yeah, I mean I already gave the last couple of Mission: Impossible movies a 3 each so I'm starting to think that I might extend these movies the same courtesy (especially since they're both franchises that have gotten over their rough patches and settled into some solid formulas).

Star Wars: The Force Awakens - 10/10 - I know I reviewed this before, but I figured I'd bring it up again, since I brought up Fury Road a couple weeks ago.
This movie still remains my favorite of 2015 with a stellar cast doing fantastic acting, fantastic dialogue, an action-packed story (though admittedly not entirely original), along with fantastic VFX, sound, and the ever-awesome John Williams providing the music! Seriously, I can't find a reason to dislike this movie in any way, shape, or form. If you thought there was a better film from 2015, that is perfectly fine, but for me, The Force Awakens is it! (Though I think it's only 3rd in its own series, with The Empire Strikes Back being #2 and A New Hope being #1!)

I wish I'd seen the first movie below before I turned in my films of the 50's list, but such is life:
Paths of Glory (1957)
Excellent film that has been called an anti-war movie, but I felt more like it was an anti-lust for power movie. The two generals in the movie (played awesomely by George Macready and Adolphe Menjou) set in motion a series of tragic events when one, Menjou, wants a German hill taken by his French troops just because he wants it and it will look good for all concerned, especially him. He talks Macready into it, and things go downhill from there. The leading officer in the field is Colonel Dax, played by an excellent Kirk Douglas. When, for varying reasons, the hill is not taken, Macready wants men in Douglas' troops brought up on charges of cowardice, punishable by death. And the men chosen from each squad are picked at the discretion of their squad leaders, making it totally unjust. Thus begins a trial in which Dax must defend his men against the charges.
All of the players are great, especially the three leads already mentioned. But among the three men standing trial, Timothy Carey is especially great. A must-see film directed by the great Stanley Kubrick. Loved it.

The Lady Eve (1941)
A Preston Sturges classic about a bumbling but amiable heir to a fortune (Henry Fonda) who is set up as a mark by a trio of card sharks, including Barbara Stanwyck and Charles Coburn. Trouble occurs when Stanwyck falls for Fonda and he for her. Several twists keep things fun throughout the movie. Stanwyck is very sexy in this one and Fonda is great fun as the confused leading man. Great entry in the Sturges canon.

A heavy metal New Zealand teenager opens up the gates of hell with his guitar.
Brodie is a shy, picked-on metalhead who finds himself chainsawing and eviscerating nasty demons like a pro. Set your expectations-meter on low, and you'll have a fun time with this one. The demons are particularly gross, evil and ugly, with broken teeth and blood dripping from every orifice. They do get theirs, fortunately, whether it's from a chainsaw, axe, dildo, electric drill, or grinder.
Very tongue-in-cheek, both jokewise and gorewise, and pretty funny.
It's a fun change from the normal stuff when you're in the mood.

Here (http://www.movieforums.com/reviews/1424787-deathgasm.html) is my review. I'm pretty split on it because, while I do appreciate it being a throwback to old-school gore-fests in the spirit of Raimi or Jackson, it's effectively balanced out by the weakness of the whole metalhead/outcast humour that was already old in Detroit Rock City.

Chris Evans gives us his directorial debut in a small film about two people who spend one night together in NYC. Nick, played by Evans himself, is a musician and plays his trumpet at Grand Central Station when the beautiful, but clearly distraught Brook, played by Alice Eve, comes running through to catch the last train. She misses it. She also accidentally broke her phone. When he decides to chat her up he finds out her purse was stolen earlier and she must, absolutely must, get home tonight. Throughout the night these two discover secrets about each other, fears, goals and everything else that would make someone potentially fall in love, but do they?
I'll admit something here that might get my movie viewing card revoked. I've never seen any of the "Before Trilogy" films and even I know that this film borrows heavily from them. I don't know if I would have enjoyed this more or less, but for the most part, this film is genuine.
Most of the film works based on the charms of the two leads. Evans has always had that charm to him and he puts it to full effect here. The relationship between the two only has hints of romance. Evans, smartly, side steps the obvious romantic choices for something more real. I appreciated that. His directorial effort is nothing to shake a stick at. The script doesn't call for anything fancy, so it comes off as too easy a choice for him to start with. Shoot two good-looking people roaming around NYC, not too hard.
The script tries to find ways to make it impossible for these two to separate. Broken phones, no money, broken noses. The shortcomings here are few, but noticeable. I feel that fans of the Before films will either despise this film for being too familiar, or appreciate it as a "little-brother" of sorts.

The Nice Guys (Shane Black, 2016) 3
Saw this a while ago but can't remember if I ever posted about it: Once it gets into its rhythm, the film is extremely funny and entertaining, with solid performances all round. Angouri Rice is a delight as Ryan Gosling's daughter, but there's no doubt that Ryan Gosling is the overall star of the show, giving a fantastic comedy performance. My problems with the film fall mainly with its final act, before then the plot - although traditionally difficult to follow - still worked and move the film along nicely, but following a significant moment it shifts to a gun happy action film.
Zootopia (Byron Howard & Rich Moore, 2016) 3
Another film that took a while to get going, but one that I found myself enjoying a lot once its detective story started properly. I have heard a lot about its positive message, and its definitely a positive for the film and makes it extra relevant in today's climate. In terms of animation and originality, I don't feel like the film does anything particularly great, but it's good in almost all elements.

Ehhhh, my recollection of The Devil's Rejects is...less than favourable. I gave it a 1 last year, whereas Pain and Gain is at least a 2 or maybe even a 2.5 for me. All hype aside, I genuinely enjoyed this movie the 2nd time around. Great cast and crisp writing. I don't mind the flip dialogue, as it defines and colorizes Juno's character -- she's a 16-year-old after all. Ellen Page does a great job, and the vibe of Allison Janney/JK Simmons as the parents are perfect and they effortlessly steal every scene they're in.
Despite all the cutesy pie hipness etc, the theme, situation and emotions are very real indeed, and that is what drives it.
One thing irritates me. The entire soundtrack sounds like a Prius commercial, and that makes me want to run into a tree headfirst as fast as I can. But that may or may not be the movie's fault....
I would have to say, overall, it still holds up 9 years later.

The first time I ever experienced such a unique movie category. They managed to make a serial killer chick flick. Tucci finally found a role that fits him like a glove. I was not a big fan of Man Of Steel, so I was not too thrilled for this sequel. The critics hated it. The audiences were split over it. I for one found it a little entertaining, but way too over-the-top, and messy, especially in the final act of the movie.

The Original Harry Palmer Movie Trilogy
https://s31.postimg.org/bvb92blaj/HP_3in1.jpg
Len Deighton was considered one of the top three spy novelists of his time along with Ian Fleming & John le Carré; and his first protagonist - the nameless spy later christened as 'Harry Palmer' by producer Harry Saltzman and Michael Caine himself who played this odd but charming role of a British spy in 3 consecutive films from 1962 to 1966...somewhat falls between the taste of Fleming & le Carré works, IMO. Really loved Sir Michael Caine's portrayal of Harry Palmer...kind of an arrogant British agent with witty dialogs who eventually gets his job done through his own network of people working in different fields or departments is something worth to check out for any spy fiction lovers. Guy Doleman played General Ross, the boss of Harry Palmer kinda resembled 'M' of Bond series but in a more grounded & classy way.
Enjoyed all the 3 films but found the last one...Billion-Dollar Brain (1966) as the weakest entry in this film series while Funeral in Berlin (1964) stands out as the best one for its great twisted story and nevertheless for the great Oskar Homolka's part as the top Soviet Intelligence officer Colonel Stok...surely a delight to watch.

A professional getaway driver searches for a shipping container of smuggled slaves.
The perfect brainless action picture, done up to a fault. This is the first one in the Jason Statham franchise, who is the undisputed King Kraft Velveeta of the silver screen. Smooth and cheesy, he plays Frank, ex-military of course, which by rote gives him mad fighting and coping skillz.
The sheer stupidness of the action is off the charts. Deflecting a missile with a tea tray, finding a parachute in a cropdusting plane and landing on a truck, etc. And we love it, and we will take it, in order to watch the amazing Statham, whose awesomeness lies in the fact that he can deliver this to us with a straight face.
I've heard that originally Frank was supposed to be gay, which was suppressed by the producers to appease action fans, by introducing Qi Shu as his doting girlfriend. Despite this, there are a few treasures in there to keep the myth alive, such as Frank's punctilious air, his home, rolling around in grease with a bunch of guys, an underwater air-kiss, odd open-legged crotch fighting oddities etc. I'm all for it, and If you watch the film with this premise in mind, it makes it way more interesting.
I have shamefully not seen any of the other films in this franchise, but I plan to get a bucket of chicken wings, a few Shock Tops and go to town.

BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE
(2016)
I was not a big fan of Man Of Steel, so I was not too thrilled for this sequel. The critics hated it. The audiences were split over it. I for one found it a little entertaining, but way too over-the-top, and messy, especially in the final act of the movie.
The movie had potential to be as huge as the title insinuates, but fell short due to plot holes. Henry Cavill is starting to look believable as Superman. Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne/Batman was really good. Jesse Eisenberg was miscast as Lex Luthor.

Star Trek Beyond (2016) - rating_4
Out of the three films, this one feels the closest to being an episode of the tv series.
McCoy was always my favourite character in the original series, and I've been a fan of Karl Urban for many, many years, so his relative lack of screen time in the previous two movies was always a huge negative for me. He gets a more prominent role in Beyond, and some of the subplots I never cared for (such as the Uhura/Spock romance) are much more subdued and don't do anything to derail the film this time around.
I'll actually have to rewatch Star Trek (2009) to decide if I like that film or Beyond more, because it's a close call for me. This is really the sequel fans deserved to get instead of Into Darkness.

I wasn't especially looking forward to this movie, and at the very beginning the sitcom look of it did nothing to inspire any hope. It ended up being the typical rom-com that I expected, except it ended up being one of the best I've seen. The cast is stellar, with Doris Day and Rock Hudson as the leads, and Thelma Ritter and Tony Randall as the supporting players. This isn't anywhere close to a musical, but there were a couple of brief musical interludes that I thought were awesome. The character's chemistry and dialogue were very good, and this turned out to be a real fun movie and a nice surprise.

LIGHTS OUT
(2016)
Lights Out is an entertaining and decent horror film that is inspired by a short 2-minute film that went viral on social media a few years ago.
The movie is heavily flawed. The acting performances are mediocre at best. The script is shamelessly filled with clichés.
In conclusion, the movie is nothing really special -as a matter of fact it is overrated considering the high score it received on Rotten Tomatoes- but it still made for a fun hour-and-a-half at the movies.

From the Ebert list, a little girl loses her parents and puppy as the Germans bomb France. She meets a little boy who brings her home to his family with problems of their own. A lot of this movie is how children deal with tragic circumstances by being children. It is a sweet movie, but also extremely upsetting, especially in the beginning.

I thought this film did a fantastic job capturing the atmosphere of quiet intimacy in the relationships between family members (mother and son, mother and daughter, father and daughter) as they process and deal with the consequences of a hostage situation. It all just felt very relatable and real to me. I liked how the film avoided being trapped in a usual violence-driven narrative - they could have brought the bad guy back toward the end to pile on the terror but they didn't. Instead, they opted to focus on the psychological aspect of dealing with a traumatic situation, and did it exceptionally well.

The Fly
I watched this film loads as a kid and not seen it for a few years so I watched it again, just a fantastic inventive movie, one that makes you recoil but also think, there's a lot more to this film than a man turning into a fly, it is as great today as always and the special effects are superb, much better because what you are seeing is real, not computer generated (have we really advanced?) when I saw brundle become a fly I think not because it looked better 20 years ago than a lot of it does today.. much much better... daring, bold and original

David O. Selznick presents Rebecca, produced by David O. Selznick, directed by David O. Selznick, music created by David O. Selznick, executive producer David O.
Rebecca was an turning point in Hitchcock's filmography. Sometime around 1940, David O. Selznick went to England for toffee and came back with a great lump of a director and he was like 'make this lame best-seller into a film'. Unfortunately, as we all know, Selznick was the second worst Hollywood producer of all time, whose job is to efface the signature of the director and he created an MGM film instead of a Hitchcock film.
The monotonous story unfolds pretty quickly at first, and then very slowly. As far as the acting goes, if this film didn't have Olivier it would have nothing, the new Mrs. de Winter is played by Joan Fontaine (who I hate), there's also a sinister housekeeper who gives off a real Lewinsky vibe but in the end not much comes of her.
All that being said the cinematography was good and there were a few interesting superficial similarities to Ka (https://g.co/kgs/rHUpxn)ne. Particularly the final scene, which is probably the only Hitchcock ending to take itself seriously.

Some people would have you believe this movie is a dumpster fire on wheels rolling down a hill towards a crowded playground. It is far from it, in fact I found it quite enjoyable.
Tasked with a film about the two most iconic heroes, Snyder did a commendable job. Is it perfect? No. Then again, Snyder sits at the Hollywood High lunch table with Michael Bay in terms of public sentiment. Throw in the hyper-fanboys that believe they have ownership of these characters and it is easy to see how the backlash got rolling.
Snyder knows how to film action, that can't be denied. Being critical of this movie is an option, but I have better things to do today.

Norwegian disaster film that has it's strengths and weaknesses. The movie has a great look to it, and whatever location it's filmed at is breathtakingly gorgeous. I also liked how the death and destruction is treated in a tragic matter, rather than in the cartoonish way movies of this type are typically done. The biggest problem is that it's just about the most cliched movie I've ever seen. That would be ok if it was non-stop action with awesome special effects, but the action lasts for just a short time and the effects are just alright. I'm a sucker for disaster films so I did at least enjoy it. However, some of it's ads and reviews will tell you that it's better than American disaster films. That's a lie coming from foreign film snobs.

The Wolf Of Wall Street:3: There's a brilliant 140 minute movie existing within this 3 hour epic of drugs and sex and yachts, but in its current state the scenes of an exploitive con man being glorified are repetitive and boring. Watching Leonardo DiCaprio lose his legs from drugs and flop around was fantastic comedy, though.
Hugo: 3_5: It's nice watching Scorsese step out of his comfort zone. The visuals in the movie are great. Great CGI, great set design, great colors that really pop. The flow of the narrative was off for me-it was odd to mention movies only once in the first half and then become explicitly about movies in the second-but I reccomend this movie.
The Legend of Tarzan: 1_5: Perhaps I've been spoiled, but the CGI in this movie touches the exact same bases as The Jungle Book and looks significantly worse in every shot. Skarsgard cannot act. The movie assumes that you already know about Tarzan and Jane, and we learn nothing about them as characters. Sam L Jackson is the only redeeming feature, with an interesting character to go with his great performance.

I wasn't completely crazy about Blue Ruin. I thought there was a lot of good stuff going on but it didn't end up properly sucking me in. This i liked quite a bit more. Interesting story, it would be such a terrifying and unlucky thing to be there at the exact wrong time. I do find it a bit hard to believe that the police wouldn't have searched the premises when they called them for the set up stabbing they reported. It wasn't a big problem for me but i would've liked them to have at least adressed it, all you see is the police pulling up and then the owner showing up then next time you see the owner the cops have presumably already left. The violence wasn't as bad as i'd thought it would be other than the scene where Pat's hand is hanging off, ugh that was horrible. Not that it wasn't brutal i just expected more horrible scenes from what i've been hearing. Patrick Stewart was very good, constantly calm and controlled he came across very sinister throughout. Anyway solid film that kept up a well done tense and brutal atmosphere throughout.

Well where do I begin... this movie is probably one of the most dull anticlimactic things I have seen in recent times. First off the story is so basic that there really is no point to even making it. The actors I guess did what they could with the script. Anthony Hopkins looks like he slept through most of it. There were also times where I thought that there was going to be more character development but if went nowhere. Most of the movie is basically Hopkins searching for Liotta and asking just about everyone in town. I dont recommend this tripe even if you wanted to switch your mind off for 90 mins or so.

This was a lot of fun, i think if i had seen this as a kid it would rank up with childhood films like Back To The Future. Really good storytelling, and a great and iconic script. I've heard so many lines before so it was nice to see where they originated. Like "This word. I don't think it means what you think it means" The conversations were probably my favourite thing in the film. I liked Inigo and The Man and Black a lot, especially how friendly and frank they were most of the time, even during the swordfights. Loved their relationship, so civil with shared respect it was weird seeing something like that and it worked. Wallace Shawn was very good in this as well, he is perfect for playing these sort of creepy, annoying people. He had one of my favourite lines:
Vizzini: We're at an impasse, i can't match your strength and you are no match for my brains.
The Man In Black: You are that smart?
Vizzini: Let me ask you this, have you ever heard of Plato, Socrates, Aristotle?
The Man In Black: Yes?
Vizzini: Morons.
Perfect delivery. Was gutted when he died so early.
My biggest surprise was Andre The Giant, i was expecting a bad Arnie performance not that he was amazing or anything but he was pretty believable and enjoyable to watch.
Anyway i don't want to keep ranting. Overall it was a very funny and entertaining film with a great scrip and cast of characters. Glad i finally watched it.

Trying to re-watch these movies to see if I can get interested in the latest one. So far, so...not good.
Weakest of the trilogy but in no way a bad movie, what's your problem with it?

Eh, I tried watching the sequels for the first time last year and gave them both 2 but we'll see if that changes the next time around. As for my problem, they all seem kind of bland to me - kind of well-made, sure, but not enough to make them great.

Damn, Iro. Okay, well, not gonna be too mad about the rating for Identity. I like it, but I see problems with it. Same for the sequel. But Ultimatum really brought it together. A very slick, tightly made and intense action thriller that binds the movies as well as the whole Bourne universe well together.
Just that train station 30-minute-or-so sequence near the beginning is one of the best and most adrenaline fueled non-action sequences I've seen. The tension is extremely well executed and developed. It could've been a climax for a film tbh.
I hope at least the third film will sit better with you this time around, Iro. maybe a 3/5?

Captain America: Civil War (Anthony Russo & Joe Russo, 2016) rating_2_5
Similar to its predecessor, there is a lot of stuff that I enjoy in the film. Sequences that are well directed and stories that are structured well enough to keep my interest. I enjoy pretty much anything that involves some sort of espionage, and the film gets off to a good start with a plot all the more relevant in today's current world situation, as well as the introduction of Daniel Bruhl, whose performances I have enjoyed previously. But then, we also have the stuff I don't enjoy with these kind of films, you could take out the two significant battle sequences, or at least drastically cut them down, for most of the part I find them boring or silly. Then [slight plot spoilers] the eventual solution to the Bruhl storyline, "where are the stakes?" is often a question I here about these films, and its certainly a valid question. By the time the end credits came, I asked myself what had actually happened in the film, the answer? Not much really. A few characters angrier, but not much else. What was the point of it all?

Because they are individuals and have their own tastes that don't overlap with any preconception that QT is somehow their "guy"? Even if they like QT, they might not like Django on its own anyway.

Bergman never lets me down. Although this wasnt his best work its still absolutely wonderful. Downbeat throughout and with such a straight forward plot its realism really hits hard, especially the opening sequence with the clown. Highly recommended before the 50's deadline!!

Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954)
My thoughts echo that of The Invisible Shrinking Man which I watched the other day. THis is a well made film that you can take seriously. Its well shot with nice scenery, good acting and the underwater scenes are excellent. Easy to see why Gillman has become so iconic.

No, I've enjoyed several of his movies. They were beautifully done on many levels. Unfortunately, many of them do not come across as a purely guys guy type of movie. Certainly not a director that is limited to a "straight white male audience between 16-35". I own Kill Bill, Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction, including soundtracks of the last two. None of them feature DiCaprio.

A rewatch, still a very enjoyable film. I still prefer the first half, maybe its a bit sleazy, but I think it works for what its going for. Kurt Russell is perfect for the role.
The Rack Pack (Brian Welsh, 2016) rating_2
Decent enough BBC production about the rise of snooker with interesting performances, the young Steve Davis. It's focus on Alex Higgins means its extremely repetitive, I watched a documentary about him before which captured his character and demise better I thought, this fails to really show us any of his talent and makes him look like a complete loser despite a decent performance. It perhaps should have focussed on Barry Hearn and the changes in snooker in general.
Good Kill (Andrew Niccol, 2014) rating_1
Well polished but pretty boring, not inventive any way cinematically, and quite heavy handed and predictable in the way it goes about things. The ending knocked off a popcorn too.

Man i loved this. Linklater is one of my favourite dirctors, as much as i love a lot of his less comedy focused films i wouldn't be disappointed at all if he revisited this sort of film more often. It was great that so much of the film was just these guys going about trying loads of different college cultures, with the discos then the country place, the punk concert, etc. Excellent soundtrack, it perfectly fit the era and it wasn't the usual song choices. I'm not even sure what else to say about this, i just had a great time spending time with these characters. I do prefer Dazed and Confused but this was solid and a lot of fun.

As expected from Dreyer, the film is beautifully composed and staged. Apart from Bergman, no filmmaker better uses the "close-up". I found the opening acts somewhat dull, but the film heads towards a powerful climax. Thematically, this film is most reminiscent of Gertrud.

Jason Bourne (Greengrass, 2016)
http://i.imgur.com/S84gyV2.jpg
Went in expecting a solid action film, and that's what I got. The film can mainly be divided into three big-scale action sequences, the first two are a bit of a bore compared to what the earlier Bourne films managed to do, but the last one is throughly exciting, just enough to cover implausibilities.
As always, we get the plot about the CIA's secret operations and how Jason Bourne got involved. A few secrets are revealed, and not so surprisingly I wasn't surprised, nor did I care. The problem is that the last film ended with a satisfying conclusion. Now we're starting over again, starring even more character-less CIA agents, flashy flashbacks, and Greengrass putting 1 second length shots of computer screens together to create a sense of tension. Well, at least we get to see Bourne kick ass. That's my man!

I've always had an interest in the puritans for the same reason others mostly do; the witch trials. My interest in this only really started when i began to look into the Satanic Panic, often called the modern day witch trials. Not that i looked into this time in depth or anything, but i think this film did an amazing job of creating at least how i see a puritan society in my mind. Fantastic atmosphere, mostly due to how quiet it often is and the dreary look and sound of everything, as well as the strong god fearing theme throughout the film, i think it really made the more intense scenes pop since they didn't come along too often. Visually it was perfect for what it was supposed to be. I knew it would be from the trailer, i loved the feint foggy look and the use of grey and a drab greenish colour. The story was probably the least interesting part to me, not that i didn't enjoy it i just felt all of the other elements of the film were done so well it didn't need an amazing story. The performances were fine, nothing spectacular i wouldn't have expected them to be or felt they needed to be in this sort of film. Good ending i especially liked the abrupt cut from Thomasin talking to Black Phillip to her walking towards the woods accompanied by that big boom noise.
Great film.

Finding Dory (2016)
So, Disney-Pixar decided to join the no-creatitvity train that has been running Hollywood for the past 2 years and do a sequel that could almost be called a remake of one of its greatest successes. Just like Jurassic World, Star Wars: A New Ho... The Force Awakens (I'm sorry, I always get them confused), Mad Max, Ghostbusters, etc, etc., Finding Dory lives from the spirit of its predecessor, Finding Nemo.
But first, the good parts: the animation is extremely well done, Pixar is getting better and better every year in that aspect which makes me look forward to the future!
Most of the jokes they tried to make outside the "I don't remember..." thing worked. It's a pitty they didn't try that more often.
Apart from that, if we remove the nostalgia element (that I recognize that exists) we are left with a only decent animation movie in no way comparable to the originality of Finding Nemo.

Duets (2000)
Solid comedy-drama about the world of karaoke and the various characters who either love it or find themselves pulled into it. It might not sound like a great theme for a movie but it is very engaging. Huey Lewis plays a karaoke hustler (that sounds funny right there!) who pretends to not know about karaoke in the various honky-tonks and hotel bars he goes through but he makes big money fooling people when he reveals his excellent singing voice. His "living" is interrupted when he meets the daughter he abandoned as a child, played by Gwyneth Paltrow. I'm not the biggest Paltrow fan, but I really liked her in this. She plays an innocent, well-meaning young lady who wants a relationship with her dad after the death of her mother. At some point, karaoke brings them together.
Maria Bello plays a hustler of sorts also. She sleeps with various men to get traveling money and finds a regular "friend" in the form of taxi cab driver Scott Speedman, who is getting over a breakup. He is shocked at her upfront way of dealing with people but soon gets in the groove when he hears her sing.
But the best relationship in the movie is between Paul Giamatti and Andre Braugher. Giamatti is tired of the grind of being a businessman who spends most of his time in the air between deals and is losing touch with his family. So he leaves them and finds out he can sing when encouraged by a female singer. He soon loses all inhibition and drinks, pops pills, and picks up a hitchhiker (Braugher) who we've found out earlier is a newly released convict who still packs a gun and robs people. But he sees something in Giamatti and they soon become buddies on the road and ending up singing together in various places. Of course, everybody winds up at the same place near the end, like most of these multiple character movies, but it doesn't feel forced. Everyone of the major players except Braugher actually sing their songs and they are good! I was very surprised. It's a movie well worth your time.

Fierce People (2005)
It may be because of Anton Yelchin's recent tragic death that his movies are showing up quite a bit on cable. So it happened that this film came on that I'd never even heard of and I started watching it, knowing nothing about it, except the cast as their names appeared onscreen. It's a film about a young teen (Yelchin) and his mother (Diane Lane) who leave New York so his mother, who is a massage therapist for ailing people, can work full-time on an old friend, the very rich Donald Sutherland who lives in the country in New Jersey. Yelchin would rather be in South America with his anthropologist father, whom he's never met and he dreams about joining and studying the "fierce people" or native Indians that his father lives with. But instead he meets the rich people, some of whom are "fierce people" in their own right, and not in a good way. The first half of the movie deals with Yelchin and Lane mainly being accepted by most everyone and treated well. Sutherland, of course, has feelings for Lane but due to a certain illness, can do nothing about it, and he takes Yelchin under his wing and treats him like a member of the family. There are snobs aplenty, to be sure, but Yelchin, even in his youth, just bears the brunt of their venom with humor and nonchalance. He meets Sutherland's daughter, played by Elizabeth Perkins, who is a kind of snobby airhead, her son, played by Captain America himself, a young Chris Evans, and her daughter, played by an even younger Kristen Stewart, who I think is around 13-years-old here but looks and acts a bit older. Yelchin and Stewart fall for each other, Evans treats him like a brother.
So everything seems to be lighthearted until the movie changes its tone midway and Yelchin's character is raped by an unknown male assailant. So he has to deal with the aftermath of the attack, insisting on staying despite his mother's protests. He wants to find out who did it and get revenge. There are any number of people who don't like him that could be the suspect. His relationship with Stewart suffers also because he doesn't feel like a young man anymore due to the assault. There is also a murder in the latter half of the movie! All this doesn't ruin the movie by any means, but it wasn't expected at all.
All the performances are fine, even Stewart for those who don't like her. Just prepare for the shift in tone.

Starring: Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor
A family of 4 is on vaction in Thailand when the the tsunami hits in 2004.
This movie is based on a real family.
First off I think the disaster part of the movie is incredibly well made- theres a part where the mother (naomi watts) is caught up in the stream and goes down the river the tsunami has made and it really made it real, how its not just the water thats dangerous but also all the things that the wave forced with it-or what she might be thrown into by the waterforce.
I thought both ewan and naomi were terrific,my only complaint is the eldest brother-who did well most of the movies but there were a few spots here and there. Also alot of it was voice over afterwards and a few times that was really noticable.
even though its based on a real story,i do feel like them all surviving was a bit too much of a feelgood ending-to show how harrowing it really was,and how it was for many,i would have preferred it if one of them hadnt made it.

Black Dynamite - 3.5-
http://i66.tinypic.com/2nk6rv5.jpg
This was pretty difficult at first, i obviously knew the acting was deliberately bad and over the top but it was still pretty jarring at first. Because of this the first 20-30 minutes were a bit hard to sit through but i eventually begun to get into it thankfully and this turned out alot of fun. As soon as Black Dynamite kicked the door open and the old woman flew across the room i knew this was going to be funny. Loved how needlessly dramatic a lot of this was, so much of it felt out of place on purpose of course and it really worked. One of my favourites was his orphanage flashback "not the orphanage i used to be an orphan" *Black Dynamite looks into the distance* Great action scenes too both the gunfights and the hand to hand ones, so ridiculous yet fun. The character Black Dynamite was great, i loved his line delivery "kung fu treachery" :D. Loved the ending, so random Richard Nixon haha.
Really funny film. I think if i was to re watch this at a later time my rating could go up a bit since i got used to and even came to enjoy the over the top acting.

Batman: The Killing Joke (2016)
https://s32.postimg.org/otisspoo5/BKJ.jpg
One of the worst DC adaptations! If I even overlook or forget about the unnecessary & lame prologue of Batgirl that consumes the first 30 minutes of this film, it still remains a lifeless, dull & disjoint animated feature. The problem was everywhere! First of all, the animation work; it terribly fails to connect with the thought-provoking & emotional dramatic contents of the story & most notably Joker's some of the greatest lines in comic book history; even at times Batman kinda walks or moves like a Robot! The film also heavily lacks proper background scores & sound in most of the scenes that I think also contributed to make it felt like a dull animated feature. It just jumps from this scene to that scene and than it ends. I know it's unbelievable but surprisingly Kevin Conroy's voice work also sounded like he wasn't somehow ready or wanted to play his part this time!
You can find a motion comic video in youtube about this same Killing Joke story and believe me...those guys even done it in a far better & convincing way.

EVEREST
(2015)
Climbing Mount Everest is what people equate to performing a task that is extremely challenging, difficult, and dangerous.
With a star-studded cast that includes Josh Brolin, Jason Clarke, Sam Worthington, Emily Watson, Keira Knightley, and Jake Gyllenhaal, the movie, which is based on a true story, delivers the message quite well that climbing up the highest peak in the world is not something for the faint at heart.
In all, the movie was decent. It is worth a watch, but definitely not something I'd want to watch again.

Egyptian revolutionaries battle their leaders and regime to build a new society.
I found this documentary quite messy and with not enough information and background, though I learned a little, you could probably learn more on a quick search on YouTube as this was told almost exclusively from the ground and the shaky cameras of these so called revolutionaries (who can only protest but offer no alternative) but never rose up to give a more in depth above ground view, really I thought it was quite lazy

I knew nothing about this going in i'd just noticed it turn up in some best of the decade and best recent horror lists, i wasn't even aware it was Park Chan-Wook until the opening credits. It took me a long while to get any clue of where this movie was going which i think was possibly the best thing about it. It made me really think and concentrate on a lot of things that very well could've been totally meaningless to come up with some idea what was going to happen. Like the shoes, the basement and the food India's uncle kept cooking for the family. Obviously i knew basically right away that something was up with the uncle but i had no idea which i think was due to Matthew Goode's solid performance as well as the writing. I mean even though it was clear that something was up the guy was more or less normal, he was pretty smug and too persistent with a girl who had just lost her dad but i never got a sinister vibe directly from him it was purely from India's reactions to him. My first guess was that he wasn't actually related to the family and that he was some evil conman, that was until the aunt arrived her reaction to his claim of being in Europe made it obvious what was going on. Even when this became clear and India found the body it still returned to the same when she wasn't confronting him about it and her coming to accept him only after she had discovered this. The murder scene really made the rest of the film even more intriguing trying to figure out what her Uncles intentions were exactly.
I liked the reveal of what happened, not that it was anything mind blowing or anything i couldn't have guessed but i think it was about the best they could have done and the scene was very well done. Matthew Goode was great in that scene and i liked the switching from the past incident to India's dad's murder as well as the little touches like blood getting splashed on India's face from the rock blows to her dad. Just to note that at this point i haven't even mentioned Nicole Kidman once, this wasn't deliberate, i've just noticed myself and it makes sense because i don't think her or her character made any impact on the film. It's surprising that they went with a big name like her i think the role could've been filled by anyone, completely forgettable character and performance IMO.
Very good film.

Crimson Tide (1995) - 2.5 +
Pretty silly movie like most of Tony Scott's work, but it has some great lines.
Religilous - 3
http://i65.tinypic.com/2dtvv50.jpg
This is the first time i've ever really seen Bill Maher, he seems to be pretty polarizing, i've heard him called hilarious as well as some not so nice things. Well i liked him, not sure if that would stay the case if i had as much exposure to him as Americans. I know he is very dismissive and mocking, as well as really simplistic in his views but i don't hold this up as any sort of great search for the truth obviously because it isn't. I just take it for what it is an atheist entertainer with strong opinions interacting with carefully selected religious people for entertainment more than anything else, so he doesn't bother me here personally. Could totally understand this annoying someone else though so this isn't me dismissing people finding this offensive or whatever i'm just explaining why it isn't to me personally.
I loved the interview with the Reverend "Jeremiah is not a doctor. He does not have a degree...of any kind.". I'm sure that and every interview in this is heavily edited so i'm not taking this as an indictment of the guy because i know nothing about him, it was pretty hilarious though. "Jesus dressed very well". That cracked me up way more than it should've.
Obviously the words on screen were a pretty shady tactic since the guy had no idea and thus couldn't respond, they were still funny though especially the one pointing out why St. Paul and the Reverand aren't similar.
St Paul:
- Not in Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes
- Did not wear fine linens
- No platinum albums
The "ex gay" guy was just ridiculous of course. I love Bill's "some of them look positively thrilled" then the cut to the gay parade. The amazing thing about that was that it came across like they were flirting, i'm sure it was made to look like that more than it actually did and if so good job.
It was nice that Jesus himself turned up for an interview, and he is Puerto Rican, who knew? :p
Anyway i'll stop there, no point in going through every interview. At times i liked this a lot but i also felt it jumped about a bit too much that left me a bit disinterested at times. And i'm just totally burnt out on anything to do with Islam and Terrorism right now since it feels like the only thing i ever hear about at the moment, i just kind of wanted it to end at that point. So overall good but not great.

It could have been a rare modern masterpiece, IMO if they could have only put little more explanations about what's actually really going on in that island?!
SPOILER WARNING[/I]** "]The film indeed offers a very unique set up with a beautiful sea side European island [kinda reminded me of that island in Who Can Kill a Child? (1976)] inhabited only by a great bunch of weird women & young boys but what goes around there was the main intriguing as well as surprising aspect of this slow burn, mysterious French sci-fi/horror. All those women who were acting like their mother even at once do this very weird orgy sort of ritual in the beach at the middle of the night and those boys gradually becomes subject to a series of strange experiments or treatments where it seems they were using them in a some sort of reproductive procedure for what knows what the hell (!?!) ...(or what those creepy human baby like things were doing with Nicholus in the tank?!...they were feeding by him?!?). And like those, there were a good deal of interesting issues & questions left unanswered. May be it is one of those kind of films that actually demands to be interpreted in a metaphorical way with a more careful viewing but despite it was beautifully shot & initially felt quite dark & promising, eventually frustrated me at the end for being too ambiguous & weird, without providing much hints to interpret it or made some sense about the whole affair.
At one point I was thinking may be it would going to reveal that those women are actually mermaid or siren sort of creatures and they need or steals human baby and raise them to a certain age to sacrifice them in order to give birth of their own child that they become unable to do for some weird natural change or curse...or whatever!

Mickey One - 5/10
Very weird. If the movie is scrambled, no good, they can always call it an "art-house" movie.
ADD: I didn't wanna see I thought this was influenced by "The Trial", Orson Welles' adaptation of Kafka with the movie techniques of Fellini's "8.5". I did like the "stand-up" part, with it's jazzy stream of consciousness, I think it was trying to grasp the Mort Sahl comedy revolution, which can't be done, it's his own "language"
I just read the wiki synopsis, and although I understood what was going on, it was still convoluted (to say "confused" might mean I'm dumb).
I give it a 5, because I didn't regret seeing it, but wish I would have saw something else, as I could have watched this in the future. Maybe I'll watch another movie today to make up?

An Autumn Afternoon - 10/10
Great movie about life. Family and friends growing old, and wanting their children to be happy as well. I really found it interesting the men talking about World War II, and how the Naval Captain actually thought it was good they lost, with the younger man agreeing. He felt by losing the war, American culture spread to them, and you can see both cultures mixed. Traditional marriage, arranged by not forced, while the housewife uses a Brillo pad afterwards. The movie has some funny lines, and the relationship between the characters is interesting and clear. You know exactly how each person feels in the movie. Very well directed, might have to watch another by Ozu today.

I think you gave an accident rating there... Shouldn't that be for The Force Awakens?
Shichinin no samurai a.k.a. Seven Samurai (A. Kurosawa, 1954)
http://i2.wp.com/wherethelongtailends.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Seven_Samurai_21.png?w=640
A movie well ahead of its time in every single aspect!
The sountrack and the cinematography are amazing but it's the storytelling that really makes this movie stand out.
Kurosawa takes the time to introduce every single character and his motivations so we can understand everything that will happen later! Then he takes us to the village where the preparations for the battle take place and shows us every single detail so we understand the spirit of the farmers at the beggining of the battle and how are they going to overcome their enemies!
Lastly it's the battle! It's a hard one and it's solved like exactly that! There are no impossible and hollywoodesque twists! The battle is won with strategy and patience.
Each one of the 3 parts takes more than 1 hour, and I wouldn't reduce a minute! Everything that is said and done is important in estabilishing the moral of the film, which is impressive!
Such a movie would be impossible nowadays, with our reduced attention span but this is truly a film that stands through time!
I had some troubles in relating to the story, which made it less enjoyable but I recognize the brilliance of a masterpiece like this one. I'll definitely get back to this one someday, and I feel my rating will go higher by that time.

I had wondered how Julia Stiles managed to resurrect a toe-tagged career. That riddle solved itself quickly. I did enjoy seeing a van window get broken, magically repair itself and then break itself again when the passenger got out.

I think Warren Beatty has got to be one of the worst actors I've ever seen. I don't recall ever linking him in any of his roles.
He was a perfect Dick Tracy (1990), but, I did notice that all the good actors in that movie were so embarrassed to be in the same film with him, that they insisted their make-up make them unrecognizable.:D
The Spy Who Loved Me (Lewis Gilbert, 1977)
The direction is great, the script has some funny bits, the henchman Jaws is one of the most iconic Bond villains of all and the Bond girl is smoking hot! I loved most action scenes because Gilbert keeps them simple and not too long making this very enjoyable!
There are two things I had a problem with: Moore can't fight decently which makes the fight scenes almost laughable, and the last 40 minutes are a complete rehash of You Only Live Twice (even if better executed).
Overall, it's one of the best movies of the entire franchise and definitely the best of the Moore phase. But Sean Connery would definitely do it better.

The movie was garbage. I think the director was making "The Outsiders" at the same time, even using the S.E. Hinton book, and tried hard to make it seem so different. Rope - 7/10
I guess it's like starting with an instant orgasm with a woman, and then slowly working your way to foreplay, building up just to get it over with. Good movie, but very typical Hitchcock.. All of his movies seem the same to me, especially when it's the third time Jimmy Stewart is the leading man (detective).. A great actor can separate himself from his previous roles, but not Jimmy. I do like movies in real-time too, but the constant puns and double-entendre got old quickly, and the acting was very lousy. But I understand some people like to watch movies to be scared; I look at the real world instead.
And the reason? Was David Jewish?

Eyes of the devil (1966)
Starring: Deborah kerr,David Niven,David Hemmings and Sharon Tate
After her husband is called back to his vinyard after another dry season,Catherine decideds to take their 2 children with her and follow him against his wishes. When she gets there she is soon disturbed by weird behaviour of the small town-particulary by brother and sister Odile and Christian De Caray-She soon realises that trouble has just begun.
I LOVED this movie-i loved the cast,i loved the setting. i thought maybe the music was too cheerful at times and the actor who played Christian just couldnt compete with the charisma of his onscreen sister and sadly therefor drowned out a bit
Which brings me to Sharon, who by far was the highlight of the movie- i loved how subtle she was,yet completely owned the character and the screen.

Papillon - 3, maybe 2.5
Who the hell wants to watch Steve McQueen try to escape from prison for two-and-a-half hours?

Martin says he wants to do a remake of the Raging Bull, but with a skinny guy. Mathematically skinny. Skinny and enraged.

The Childhood of a Leader (2015)
http://i64.tinypic.com/212z31e.jpg
The official or IMDB plot synopsis goes like this..."This chilling fable about the rise of fascism in the 20th Century tells the story of a young American boy living in France in 1918 whose father is working for the US government on the creation of the Treaty of Versailles. What he witnesses helps to mould his beliefs - and we witness the birth of a terrifying ego. Loosely inspired by the early childhood experiences of many of the great dictators of the 20th Century and infused with the same sense of dread as The Others and The Omen, The Childhood of a Leader is an ominous portrait of emerging evil."
So I was expecting something like a serious or interesting take on the Evil Child sub-genre of horror. But it was actually nothing like that. Moreover, I really felt sad for that talented kid...neither parent got much time for him, his best friend was the head maid and most importantly there wasn't any sign or indications that they revealed in the film which could make or inspire such a normal, spoiled kid to eventually grows up and become an "evil" leader at the end. And another misleading thing was the background score...sometime it was just manipulative and pretentious; make you feel like something terrible or interesting thing(s) going to happen but when there was nothing actually happens most of the time at the end of a scene(s).
Only good things about the movie were the cast & the production values.

I remember when I used to think that this was top 50 material. Those were the days.

It's top 10 material.
Okay, maybe not. A rewatch is probably needed for further commenting. I never liked Guy Richie anyways, but as I recall, Snatch was quite the catch - or at least the best use of his Richism.
