Scandal (1950)
3
Kurosawa film about an artist and a famous female singer who innocently meet, and are photographed together by paparazzi. Their magazine publishes the photo claiming an untrue love affair, and the man decides to sue. There is a bit of a twist involving his lawyer, and it's a decent story overall. This is far from one of Kurosawa's powerhouse films, but it's pretty solid thanks to strong performances from Toshiro Mifune, the dude from Ikiru, and the lead actress.

Oh and can I just point something out; Mad Max: Fury Road completely ripped this film off! No I'm serious. Don't believe me? Well listen to the plot of Hell Comes to Frogtown. In a post-apocalyptic wasteland a reluctant warrior is drawn into someone else's war. In this world, fertile women are prized possessions. Our reluctant warrior joins forces with a strong, kick-ass woman to rescue a harem of five such women from a disfigured mutant who is keeping them hostage. After rescuing them our heroes are engaged in a car chase through the desert. Sound familiar? Ok yes Fury Road didn't have massive talking frogs I'll give you that, but aside from that George Miller appears to have pretty much xeroxed Frogtown. Get him sued! :D
Having also watched Hell Comes to Frogtown recently, I did note the similarity, though I also noted the similarity to the 1983 Italian B-movie 2019: After the Fall of New York, which also involved a post-apocalyptic loner warrior being forced by the government to carry out a mission that involved rescuing a fertile woman from a city full of mutants. Nothing new under the sun.
Anyway, last movie I saw...
Boyz n the Hood - 2.5
If I hadn't already heard that the members of N.W.A. dismissed this film as an "after-school special" due to its heavy-handed moralising about hood life, would I have come to the same conclusion myself? Quite possibly.

Shadows (1959) - John Cassavetes
The first film that Cassavetes directed. This movie really confirmed that Cassavetes is my favourite American director of all time. It was apparently largely improvised and was somewhat experimental - which stylistically worked very well with the Jazz soundtrack and the "beat generation" characters. It comes across as slightly amateurish at times but in some ways that adds to the realism - my wife actually thought it was a documentary. It gets credited for being a huge influence on American independent cinema and it really felt like it was something different to anything I've seen from that era.

This movie is incredible. A ton of fun with brilliant action and hilarious dialogue this is another fantastic win for Marvel. Paul Rudd plays a likable and charismatic hero who really makes you root for him and his goals. Michael Pena is the real heist of this film as he steals every scene that he is in. Corey Stoll as the villain was a fantastic choice from Marvel. He can play the corporate business man and an intimidating villain. The visuals are stunning in this film. All of the tiny ant scenes are visually outstanding and hilarious. The are two post credit scenes which are fantastic and really tie into the larger universe. Ant Man is a fantastic movie which is worth your money and I suggest that you see it in cinemas.

No, what's the latest news?....I never seen the Ebert commentary track. I'll have to get Citizen Kane again one of these days.
I think Peter and Oja's behind the "Gofundme" project (or something similar) to get the film publicly financed. I've seen some clips of the film..
I made a mistake.. It's not Don Quixote, it's "The Other Side of the Wind" with John Huston as the lead.

I'll admit i'm somewhat disappointed with this one, although I still consider it a very good film. The performances are outstanding as are the aesthetics, but the narrative didn't hit the sweet spot for me. The first two acts of the film were only mediocre for me, but the final act really delivered. I was hoping for something close to a masterpiece, but only got a very solid film. Doubt I'll be watching this one again.

Goyokin (1969) - Hideo Gosha
That might just be the worst poster I've ever seen ... Anyway, this is the second film I've seen by Gosha and the 23rd starring Tatsuya Nakadai. In many ways this is a relatively standard samurai redemption film but it is elevated by Gosha's images - he seems to be a director always looking to have his scenes make an impact. That leads me to the last 20 minutes of this film - pretty much the expected final battle. What wasn't really expected, given that the previous hour and a half was really only decent, was how breathtaking the finale was. A final battle in the snow near cliffs and rough seas with a soundtrack played by four drummers wearing traditional Japanese masks - beating away constantly with the camera going back and forward between them and the actors. If Gosha can put together a whole film as good as that 20 minutes it will be an absolute masterpiece.

Ghosts of the Civil Dead (1988)
Brutally powerful and oppressively bleak, Ghosts of the Civil Dead is probably the grittiest prison drama ive seen. It is quite slow moving but this only builds up the tension to some shocking and violent scenes. Extra points for Nick Cave in this too, his is a great performance.

As far as b-horror films go, this was well-done. It had enough style and flair to mostly negate the obvious low budget-elements to the film. The action started right off the bat and was almost nonstop throughout. All the blood/gore effects were very good and at least to me didn't look cheesy at all. For a zombie film it did try to introduce some new elements and although a couple seemed very far-fetched, I commended the effort.
The last thing I'd like to point out is that I liked how it didn't seem to intentionally be funny, but just how some of the situations played out kinda made me laugh. Overall, this is one of the best b-movies I've seen, but b-movies can only go so far. As usual the acting, the cinematography, the writing etc. aren't exactly top notched. I'll give it a break though, cause I think it did well for what it was trying to be.

Decided to rewatch this as I hadn't watched it since it was released. Excellent debut from Ayoade, the soundtrack and two central performances in particular were great. Really looking forward to watching The Double.
The Spectacular Now - 7/10
This surprised me, I expected a typical Indie romance film. Instead I got a charming little film, which I think had a lot to do with the likeability of Miles Teller. No doubt it had a few of the usual cliches and Aimees story could've been a bit more developed, but overall I enjoyed it.

The Liberation of LB Jones (1970) - William Wyler
Wyler's final film. Despite me not liking Ben Hur, Wyler is in my top 10 favourite American directors. To me it feels like he is really able to find the "heart" of the story he is telling - his focus always seems to be in the right place. There is probably nothing particularly original in this story of southern racism but he creates some compelling characters and digs into what makes them do what they do. Apart from a well told story there are also a couple of quite disturbing scenes that make this quite a memorable film. It seems odd to me that this is one of Wyler's least well known movies.

De Armas e Bagagens a.k.a. Bag and Baggage
(Ana Delgado Martins, 2013, Portugal/Angola)

A documentary about the civil war in Angola in the 70s and how that influenced the thousands of Portuguese descendants living there! There was a huge migration in the 70s from Angola to Portugal, which caused a huge social impact! It's beautifully shot, with magnificent landscapes and very interesting cinematography! The life stories told by some of the immigrants are emotive and frightening and the connection they had with Angola is truly touching!
It's not a very easy film to find, but if you have the chance, watch it!

This film really blew me away. The cinematography is beautiful and slick, the chemistry between the cast is phenomenal, the visual effects are groundbreaking, and the entire film is a superb piece of entertainment. The film never dragged once, so the pacing here was near-perfect. I can't quite give it a full 5, but this comes damn close. This is classic hollywood at its best.
If the lead character had been a man, I would've been hard pressed to have had any sympathy towards him. Because it's an awkward, confused young girl, I think the viewer has much more understanding and tolerance for her behavior. She grows intellectually over the course of the movie, but not emotionally.
This is a 3 hour movie, and I thought it dragged slightly during some of the second half. However, the good definitely outweighs the bad. The movie has a very natural feel to it, and the actors are outstanding, leading to a few moving scenes. If it were to have even more dramatic punch, I probably would've thought of this as a great movie. At the very least, I thought it was very good.

Not bad Theron, not bad at all. There's only about 5 actors in this I recognize (Stoll, Theron, Hoult, Matteo & Moretz), but that doesn't take away from the movie at all. Nicholas Hoult was actually quite good in this and I didn't mind him so that's a good thing. Story was great all the way through as well, I recommend, but like the title states, it is a pretty dark movie (Figuratively) so be prepared.

The Aviator
I'm not really sure why I had put this movie off for so long, but I loved everything about it. The cinematography was excellent and the story was a fascinating one to follow. Martin Scorsese has done it again for me with a brilliantly directed story. The acting was top notch, led by perhaps a career best performance from Leonardo Di Caprio. I also really enjoyed Alan Alda, Cate Blanchett, and Kate Beckinsale. Biopics are usually hit or miss for me but when they hit, they hit. This one will be a new favorite for me.

I'm like you raul when it comes to biopics... When they hit they really do hit, but if not, it's meh. I must admit I was a little "meh" about The Aviator as a biopic, but there is no doubt about the peformance from Leo, which is still his best or if not then 2nd best ever given. But without Leo I felt like it would've been a so-so mainstream biopic. I gave it like a light 3 myself. It did have some qualities but it wasn't anything special to me.
I will have to rewatch it sometime though.
Tokyo Story - 8.5/10
Woah very powerful film, I came very close to crying at a film for the first time in ages. Quite a bit of it resonated with me. I think everyone is a little guilty of neglecting certain loved ones once we start building our own lives. At times it was a little hard to watch the parents being spoken about, passed around, treated like an inconvenience, etc. Even though it clearly wasn't done out of malice. I think this shows Oz us power as a storyteller that he can make such a simple story seemingly mean so much.
Setsuko Hara was delightful, it was nice to see her character pay so much attention, take days off work, etc to spend time with her in laws when their biological children never made the same effort. It was also touching that she felt she was being selfish, as she was lonely. Anyway fantastic film, completely deserving of its big reputation IMO. Looking forward to more from Ozu think I'll watch Late Spring in the next few days.
The Hudsucker Proxy - 7/10
This movie was a lot of fun I think it may be a bit underrated as a Coen film. Not that I think its one of their best but I do think they've made worse. For obvious reasons the film it really reminded me of was Trading Places which is a positive since I love that film. Tim Robbins was great, and Jennifer Jason Leigh's voice alone cracked me up. The only thing I'd say is that it would've been nice if Newman had a bit more screentime.

Cold in July
(Jim Mickle, 2014)
3
If you only briefly checked in on Cold in July every thirty minutes or so, you'd swear it was a different film every time you walked back into the room. I haven't made up my mind yet if that's a plus or a negative. Judging by the initial premise, I thought this was going to be a movie about a guy who shoots an intruder only to find himself in the sights of the dead man's recently paroled father, but that only describes the first thirty minutes or so. Cold in July is very twisty, very pulpy. Tonally, it's all over the place. The plot feels like four or five movies smashed into one. Again, I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing. The movie is very stylish at times. It has a cool score. Yet I repeatedly found myself wishing that the movie would either commit to the neo-noir style or stick to the old-fashioned thriller that it also aims to be. The performances from the three leading men are all very good, even though the characters feel like they belong in separate films. Don Johnson is the highlight with his boisterous, bigger-than-life personality. Plot threads are dropped and ignored as the characters stumble across increasingly seedy and disturbing events. If the movie didn't feel like it had an identity crisis, this could've been a much tighter, more focused film. Yet it's the patchwork of incongruous styles that makes Cold in July stand out from the pack. Overall, I enjoyed the ride, but I also found myself very frustrated with it at times. I could easily see those frustrations falling by the wayside with a re-watch, however, which would mean bumping this memorable thriller up by half a popcorn.

Fatal Attraction
(Adrian Lyne, 1987)
3
Play Misty For Me did the jilted-lover-out-for-revenge thing sixteen years earlier, but Fatal Attraction is the version that became a pop culture phenomenon and is often viewed as the prototype for this type of thriller. In some ways the film is a victim of its own success. Due to well-known plot details like the bunny boiling and the general familiarity of the story, I felt like I had seen Fatal Attraction before even though this was my first viewing. Hard to believe this was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture. One of the most effective things about Fatal Attraction is the portrayal of domesticity. Douglas's character has a comfortable home life, a gorgeous wife, a cute kid, an adorable dog. That makes the casualness of his infidelity all the more startling. Glenn Close is great in the role, but I've always found her butt-f**king ugly. It strains credibility that Douglas's character is able to achieve an erection during their sex scenes without putting a paper bag over her head. The most chilling scene for me was probably just seeing Close sit on the floor of her apartment, flicking the lamp off and on, off and on, off and on. The wrist-cutting scene was also unnerving. The original ending didn't test well with audiences so we get an overwrought ending with a knife and a gun and a bloody bathtub. I think Fatal Attraction serves as an effective public service announcement to keep it in your pants. Or at the very least cheat on your wife with someone much more attractive than Glenn Close.

The Fan
(Tony Scott, 1996)
2
The Fan is a similar thriller in the vein of Fatal Attraction, except Snipes and De Niro don't f**k each other on a kitchen sink. De Niro is basically a cross between his characters from King of Comedy and Cape Fear turned up to eleven. His character is so unstable that you wonder how he's managed to function in society for so long without winding up dead or in prison. Everything that happens in the film is too illogical, whether it's rubbing elbows with famous players or getting away with murder or impersonating an umpire during a professional baseball game. I don't typically complain about a lack of credibility, but the terrible script makes every plot point so lazy and contrived that it's impossible to ignore. Benicio del Toro's talents are wasted on a minor character who barely speaks English. Snipes is the only character in the film who comes across as a real human being. The Fan is the 13th Tony Scott film I've seen. With each one I feel more and more like he deserves to be mentioned alongside similarly empty action directors like Michael Bay.

Didn't care for it too much then? I really like that film. I'd give it a 3.5 maybe a 4 depending on my next viewing, but those are really good ratings from me.
I really liked it too. It is completely ridiculous but also a lot of fun, and one of my favourite John Cusack roles.

It was ok. I've said before, I'm not the biggest Cusack fan, same with Minnie Driver too, so that didn't help. Found it boring at times and didn't really get the humour. In fact, the more I remember it, the lower rating I'd give it.

Pale Flower (1964) - Masahiro Shinoda
The third film I've seen from Shinoda. So far his films have been good but he's not one of my favourite Japanese directors (sits at number 21 on that list). This is his best so far and is really like a Japanese version of a Melville film. Great images and a dark atmosphere are the highlights and the chemistry between the Yakuza and the rich woman looking for something to make her life exciting is excellent.

Where the Sidewalk Ends (1950) - Otto Preminger
Noir films aren't really known for their likeable characters and that was the case here. Dana Andrews plays a cop who like to beat people up and ends up killing a suspect. That means that there is no one here to like - except the beautiful Gene Tierney but she doesn't have a lot to do. Overall it's a good film but making everyone so unlikeable hampered my enjoyment slightly and the ending was a bit weak.

Summer Hours (2008) - Olivier Assayas
Assayas is, along with Mike Leigh, a director that I've only just started getting into but is already a favourite. I only really discovered him thanks to his work with Maggie Cheung (they were married briefly) but after watching five films in a couple of weeks I'm a big fan. Summer Hours is similar in some ways to an Ozu film or Koreeda's Still Walking - it looks at three generations of a family and then focuses on the adult children after the matriarch passes away. It meanders a bit at times but is mostly a beautiful look at family, memories and loss. Juliette Binoche is the biggest name in the cast (to English speaking audiences at least) and she is very good in a smaller and somewhat different role to what I'm used to. The rest of the cast are all good also.

I haven't seen this yet, but it's set to DVR in a few days.
For anyone (in the U.S.) who's interested, it's scheduled to air on (Fox Movie Network):
Sun. Aug. 9 at 1:20 PM on FXM
Mon. Aug. 10 at 3:00 AM on FXM
Please note that these times are EASTERN TIME. Check your local listings for the correct time in your time zone.
I hope people watch it. It's a good film to watch in preparation for a 50s countdown and Preminger is a director people should see more of.

All or Nothing (2002) - Mike Leigh
The first time I saw a Leigh film was when I watched Naked about 20 years ago. I thought I had witnessed something great but it also made me feel kind of dirty afterwards so I have tended to avoid his films. Even when I watched Happy Go Lucky a few years ago it made me tense - I kept thinking "something f***ed up is going to happen any minute ..." Anyway, after all this time I'm finally deciding to explore more of his films and, like I said above, he is quickly becoming a favourite. I find his style really interesting - he makes those realistic British dramas but something is always a bit off centre - some of his characters come across a bit like caricatures so it's a bit like an unrealistic version of realism. For me this works amazingly well and he builds multi-layered characters that I really empathise with. In All or Nothing there is a whole family of damaged, unlikeable characters that I can't help but like. Not my favourite by Leigh but a very good film.

The Human Centipede 3 (2015)
2
The last part of the legendary trilogy is set in a prison in which the sadistic warden eats imported dried African clitorises for strength. He likes to do things like waterboard an inmate with boiling water, rape his comatose secretary, and cut off and eat an inmates nuts. After having a nightmare in which an inmate stabs him and rapes him in his kidney, he decides he needs to get tough.
https://wtfbabe.files.wordpress.com/2015/05/human-centipede-3-11-sc-toilet-paper-dolls-wtf-watch-the-film-saint-pauly.jpg
The first movie of this series featured a human centipede of three, while the second movie featured a human centipede of twelve. This movie goes big, featuring a human centipede of about five hundred inmates. Just for kicks, there's also a small human caterpillar, the same as a centipede except the people have their limbs chopped off.
https://wtfbabe.files.wordpress.com/2015/05/human-centipede-3-18-sc-whos-sick-wtf-watch-the-film-saint-pauly.jpg
The movie has a good cast featuring the star of the first movie, the star of the second movie, the director, a hot blonde, and Eric Roberts. It's not as well made as the first movie, and not quite as sick as the second; it's more of a satire, and is the weakest of the three. It is a bad movie that I would not recommend, but one that I moderately enjoyed.

Ummm...so why isn't a four? Is someone forcing you to keep it below a four against your will? :D
Could be. It may be my lazy inability to commit, perhaps.. . :D
Or maybe its that borderline that is quite a definitive jump that I actually hesitate and reconsider over and over again.
I mean, i know I rarely go below a 3 rating, but then that's because if I start watching something and don't care for it, I stop. And since I don't watch all of it, I feel I shouldn't post it as a viewing and rate it. Therefore I rarely go below a 3 with anything I've had a complete viewing. Though, I think, I may have.
For me, a 3 is an amusement, 3.5 is a great enjoyment to watch and with a 4, that enjoyment becomes a love and an excitement to sit through. Which of course makes a 4.5 a great love and a 5 an absolute adoration.
So, while Jack Reacher is, very easily, a thoroughly great enjoyment and damn near a love to watch; it teeters, and while I should just lean forward and embrace it, it is still a borderline that I ponder: Is it really? Should it? Could it? Yes, no?
Which may be answered on the next viewing or even the one after when I do decide if it is a great enjoyment or one I truly love to watch.

A Bloody Aria
(Won Shin-yeon, 2006)
http://asianwiki.com/images/8/8d/A_Bloody_Aria-0001.jpg
2.5
A South Korean thriller about a group of violent, dim-witted thugs tormenting a lecherous music professor and his female student. Based on the premise, I expected something a little more action-oriented. I also thought it might venture into horror territory akin to The Last House on the Left. Instead A Bloody Aria aims to be a message film about the cycle of violence. The film is very nihilistic. Every character is reprehensible. Even the naive teenage girl who seems innocent at first glance intentionally puts herself in a situation to be taken advantage of by her music professor due to her aspirations of becoming a star. Once he forces himself on her, though, she can't go through with it and flees. Her panties get snatched during the attempted rape. One of the thugs later mentions her "furry panties," yet the director never gives us a peek up her skirt, which seemed like a real missed opportunity. At first I thought the characterization was weak, but as the movie progresses we learn all we really need to know about each character. The majority of the film takes place in one location. My biggest complaint is that the film is too dull and uneventful for long stretches. Scenes that are meant to be tense and uncomfortable instead come across as padding. The final act left a very strong impression me, though. A Bloody Aria examines the twisted relationship between bullies and the bullied, the feeling of power people receive by belittling and dominating others, how violence begets violence, how the bullied often transform into bullies themselves. The film isn't very subtle about its intentions, but it gets the point across. I just wish I liked it more than I did.

This is a seriously terrific film. Gorgeous use of light and shadow, expertly crafted scenes of profound tension and horror, as well as a thick atmosphere of dread and uncertainty. The ending was a bit of a let down, but the rest of the film is the real deal. I am not sure if Peeping Tom and Psycho were influenced by this film, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were. The perfect documentary. What a character and great story teller this guy is. Access to everyone involved, great footage, amazing pictures. I wouldn't change a thing.
I know many people feel The Walk will be completely unnecessary, but I am hopeful it will be a great companion piece. I hope Zemeckis pulls it off because it is a terrific entertaining story.

Good, but not great.
For the first 15-20 minutes or so, I thought it was gonna be downright horrible. I was already declaring it one of the worst Jake Gyllenhaal movies.
Then.... Rachel McAdams' character dies and it got MUCH better from there. Nothing against her -- it's just the movie doesn't really come alive until she dies.
It's basically a Rocky movie. It's like Rocky in an alternate universe.
The only problem is -- Jake Gyllenhaal is no Sylvester Stallone. Those of you who think Stallone is a bad actor... wrong. Rocky wouldn't be the same without Stallone in the role. Gyllenhaal does manage to be good and the story is more depressing than the Rocky stories (even Rocky V), so it's kind of a different thing. Forest Whitaker was good. But overall, the movie is very color-by-numbers. I believe it was originally conceived as a movie for Eminem -- I think it was even meant to be a sequel to 8 Mile. And you really can see that.....
Jake Gyllenhaal could be doing so much better than this... but it's a nice movie. Good pacing and inspirational.

A movie that so flawlessly takes the long walk ends up imprisonating itself into perfectionism. I can't really throw anything at this film because of how smooth it follows every rule and regulation, but in the end its strength is also what makes it come out on the other side looking weak. This film doesn't think too much outside its four walls but you just cannot hate this film no matter how hard you try. I don't want to hate it either. It's a solid film, it hits all its marks and is pretty much perfect in every way. That's also why my rating cannot be.

Irrational Man (Woody Allen, 2015)
This was my third Allen film and I went into it with rather low expectations. The reason for my interest in it is pretty obvious, but there was nothing else about this film to suggest that I was going to enjoy it at all.
Boy was I in for a surprise. It's really funny, with wonderful performances not only from Phoenix, but also Emma Stone and Parker Posey, but also shocking. Of course, the downside of its shock value is that it's bound to have diminishing returns on rewatch. I suggest that anybody who is interested in seeing it find out as little about the film as possible before going into it. Your experience will be better for it.

Visually the film is masterful that's for sure. It's a little bloated and overstuffed, some would even call out the film as being over-indulgent. I didn't care too much for the narrative, but the jaw-dropping aesthetics did leave my jaw on the floor. Hypnotic, surreal, and psychedelic are all words I'd use to describe the general feel of the film. I'm glad I checked this one out, it is a severely underrated film.
Just watched Frida (2002). It was really interesting to learn about Frida Kahlo, since I didn't know much about her before the movie. Salma did a great job in my opinion. A very poignant movie.

Not the ending I was expecting, but it will do. Rita Hayworth is most certainly a bombshell. I see why she was put on the side of an atom bomb for sure. And I can also see why this poster was in Mulholland Drive. Very nice bit of foreshadowing by Lynch's part.

Insidious (2010) - James Wan
Probably not a good sign that I had already watched this in the last few months but remembered nothing - and I only realised about 20 minutes in. I'm someone who remembers watching Leigh Wannell doing movie reviews on Saturday morning TV with somewhat infectious enthusiasm so I'm actually happy that he and Wan have had so much success - I'm not entirely sure that that success is really deserved but they latched onto something that people liked so good for them. The first half of this is pretty good with decent scares but it does start to feel like the ideas have come from other (better) movies after a while and then the last half hour is kind of annoying with unscary scares just being thrown on screen every five seconds. Overall it's ok but lost a few points for the incredibly cynical "get ready for the sequel" ending. A lot of these modern horror films are actually quite well made but seem to be lacking in creativity.

Bonjour Tristesse (1958) - Otto Preminger
Let me start by saying that Preminger was a great director and people should watch his films ... just not this one. I had trouble working out what was wrong with this - whether it was the acting or if the actors were just doing the best they could with a bad script. In the end I decided that it was probably a bit of both but ultimately the acting was really second rate - every line felt like it was being read and none of the characters seemed like they had even met each other before let alone had anything approaching chemistry with each other. Jean Seberg (Breathless) was terrible and David Niven and Deborah Kerr weren't much better. Everything else was fine - just couldn't get past the acting.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PqfZnQE7rFM/U9bHXcYeVNI/AAAAAAAAPKA/hs08h8tytxo/s1600/Voyage-1.jpg
During the 60s 1.5 million portuguese people went to France, most of them illegally, crossing the Pyrinees hidden on trucks or by foot. At some point, 300 hundred people were crossing the border illegally every day.
This movie portraits the story of a typical portuguese man of that time. Living in misery and without better options, he went through a series of dramatic events during the journey only to arrive and depend on charity and exploitation of other portuguese already there.
A very touching movie, that says a lot to me (my grandfather's story is very similar). Technically is not a masterpiece and I feel it could be 20 minutes longer. The film was mostly performed by french actors and dubbed after, which makes it a bit weird (a bit like listening to Lee van Cleef being dubbed in some spaghetti westerns).
The soundtrack is beautiful, made by a great portuguese musican, Luís Cilia.
I watched this on a big screen, with the presence of the producer and the soundtrack composer. A charming experience.

Souvenirs d'un future radieux a.k.a. Memories of a Bright Future
(José Viera Martins, 2014, France)
http://filmesdohomem.pt/img/filmes/souvenirs.jpg
One of those life-changing films. It's a documentary about Portuguese people living in slums in France during the 60s and its comparison to what happens now when we see Roms living in the same conditions in the exact same place.
The narration is overwhelming, a real life tale told by José Vieira, one of the portuguese that lived in that slum. Its constant bridge between past - present - future is humbling. It's visually astonishing (there are amazing portraits filmed with the camera) and the power of the message is hard to put into words.
I had the opportunity to meet José Viera during the past week and I can honestly say he is my new potential favorite director. I see a lot a respect to guys like Alain Resnais (obviously deserved) and this man, who is not artistically less than Resnais, has to work in construction in France because noone buys his films. France doesn't want this to be seen and Portugal is just ruled by ignorant people.
In a time where France is creating a Ministery of "National Identity" treating immigrants as if they were not human beings, as if they deserved less, this movie should be a mandatory watch.

The acting is solid, the CGI is well done, there is some good colour treatment and it has some great adrenaline-fueled scenes but apart from that there is nothing much else. It's basically hollow. Also, that last truck crash is ridiculous!

Grotesque (2009)

A young couple on their first date are abducted by a madman with diabolical plans. The madman is not a typical psycho; he is cunning and intelligent, and apparently a wealthy surgeon or doctor. He puts the couple through unimaginable torture; physical, sexual, and mental.

This is a tough movie to rate. It's a bad movie for the average film fan, but it is top notch for fans of disturbing extreme films. I've seen it compared to films like Slaughtered Vomit Dolls and the Guinea Pig Series, but those movies are so poorly made and ridiculous, that they lose their effectiveness. This movie is very well done, at least in it's own controlled state, and it is serious throughout. The cruelty and sadistic nature never stops.

I quite enjoy the anticipation for the annual Liam Neeson thriller - just to see how bad it will be. This is a sad attempt at modern noir, with one-dimensional characters and a lot of tiresome racial stereotypes. If it weren't for his acting and on screen presence, then I probably wouldn't watch Neeson lending his talents to worst director possible every year.

A movie about a loser who is great at winning but is still a loser by the end of it all. That's it. Pretty interesting character and Newman does okay, but personally I really enjoyed Jackie Gleason a whole lot more. Many of the characters are missing dept though, and they keep introducing new ones along the way, who aren't fleshed out at all by the end of the movie. I know it's about Newman and his character's journey, but still I didn't even think his character or performance was enough to carry the film. It is a very uneven film in my opinion, though it does look good in terms of cinematography and general technical achievements. As you may know my ratings have become more harsh lately, but don't take it too serious. You can give it an extra popcorn if you want. I just don't think there was much about this film at all, though I know many people love it.

A little, sometimes a lot, but not in particular really. But if so that's only the director's intention and that's fine.
Btw, I'm not one of those people who doesn't like a movie because I don't like the character and his actions. I remember we had a discussion on the forum a while ago where some people said they didn't like a certain film because the character was unsympathetic or that they didn't cheer for him or whatever. So, this was disappointing.
The beginning is great, I liked how they presented the park with that legendary soundtrack. But from the moment the action starts it's just recycling of material of the past movies in a series of already seen Spielbergisms, which is frankly annoying! It became so damn predictable! I laughed on the fighting scene when the sea monster ate the big one cause cause it was so ridiculous...
The acting is not bad, though Chris Pratt is the most overrated actor of his generation. Bryce Howard is hot though.
Her and the decent CGI give it a positive rating but almost by charity...

Bryce Howard and the CGI were two of the things I hated the most, I thought she came across as a poor actress (Pratt was disappointing too) and the CGI felt too digital, modern, trying to be realistic which meant it lost the spirit of the original, which although I'm not a massive fan of like some people, I would consider far superior.

Yet I really liked this one, though I usually dislike modern blockbusters full of CGI and poor characters and poor story etc. I just think JW was one of the better ones.
I was ready to downright hate this movie, especially the CGI and maybe also the action etc. But I really had a fun time. I feel like it did the same as Fury Road did to Mad Max. You could feel the original but it is a modern update of the franchise. And in both cases, it works imo.

Yes, not only the story, but the little things.
For example, the message about brothers needing each other, the awkward attempts at humor that have been used a gazillion times, the CGi that seems to have been purchased from Digital Effects Depot, and many others...
But overall it was an okay film, and entertaining. Didn't think it was a waste of time, but after over 10 years of wait, couldn't they have made something hmmm I don't know maybe something with more quality?

One of the few left from last year's watchlist and just showed up on Netflix. Not a bad movie. The premise is fine and Cotillard is very easy to watch. It just doesn't do a whole lot to engage, we are basically left just waiting to see how the vote goes. That's fine but it makes for stretches of pretty bland dialogue and little in the way of emotional engagement. Also, in those stretches I couldn't help thinking that these people are treating this more like $10,000 then $1,100. Just doesn't feel like it would be hard to get people to give up that amount of money for someone's livelihood, but maybe I have too much faith in humanity.

While you'd think the title "American Psycho" would tip me off, the bloody good violence caught me completely off guard and really showed off Bale in a terrifying and yet extremely entertaining light. Might watch it again sometime now that I've seen it, feel like its definitely a movie where you pick up more on the second watch. Only fault I'd give it would be the really ambiguous ending, which even for my tastes, left me craving for a little more.
Now if you'll excuse me, I have to return some video tapes

Beautiful in places and a film that can certainly be admired. I thought Portman was very good, as was Cassell, and Kunis played her part well enough but whilst the story pulled me in for the majority of it the ending left me feeling somewhat irritated by it's sheer implausiblity.
I thought the ending was the best part of the movie.

Well it's supposed to be this big dreamy wonderlandish ending in line with the characters' state of mind and her constant aim for perfection.
I don't think the ending could've been more perfect to be honest.

Yeah, I get that - it's the manner in which it's accomplished that irritated me. Aside from her psychosis (which I thought was well managed) the film is set in reality ... the ending was hardly realistic.
It's kind of ambiguous from what I thought. I think that she embraced the Black Swan, and like in the end of the actual play..

A prequel to the later GitS films and TV series, it was first released as 5 movies and then released on TV as a 10 episode series. I finished watching the first 3 movies, they were pretty good so far. Specially in terms of art and animation have been pretty good, though not on the level of the finest anime shorts/feature lengths but well above standard TV quality. The plots of each of the movies are separate and very confusing in a way, though in the end of each movie they give a narration explain what happened. So far it's state of the art cyborg themed science fiction action.

After what must be my fourth watch of this picture I finally feel like I can get my head properly around it. I still stand by pretty much all I said in my original review, but my rating has actually gone up. This film want to say so much that it can be hard to catch it all. You can't help but write it off as pretentious or overly ambitious, but I really don't think it's neither of those things anymore. It's ambitious but somehow controlled. I could say a few new things about it that I noticed but I'm a little tired now. This rating feels pretty damn solid for me now though. What a film.

Man, right after Tokyo Story as well. Movies I truly love seem to come along less often now that I have watched quite a few films, so two to come within a few days of each other was a big treat. This is all about David Thewlis who for my money put in one of the finest performances I've ever seen. He is everything most people hate in humans, he is violent, misogynistic, sexually aggressive, rapey, he clearly squandered the chances he had in life as he is intelligent to be a chain-smoking, alcoholic, rapist scumbag. Despite all of this I honestly never wanted his adventures about the streets of London to come to an end. The scipt for this is phenomenal. Johnny's conversations with the various characters he meets, usually consisting of a fairly pleasant beginning before he begins to condescend and in some cases aggressively belittle them was done to amazing effect. The whole scene with the security guard was genius, even though it was just a conversation it was unbelievably tense, I love how he was the only one to engage with Johnny throughout the film, the security guards "don't waste your life" line in the cafe the next day was appropriately chilling for both Johnny and the viewer.
The only thing I wasn't that keen on was Greg Cuttwells performance as the psycho landlord. Other than that, yeah this is a masterpiece IMO.

M (D, 1931, Fritz Lang) - rating_4+
The first Fritz Lang movie i've seen and i really liked it. The plot is very good, the editing great and Peter Lorre is just fantastic! The masterly staged ending is amazing and has one of the best and most intense monolouges i've ever seen/heard. I do have some minor complaints: Some of the actors in minor roles are pretty bad which led to some unintentional funny moments and i thought the overall atmosphere in the first half of the movie was a tad too light for the subject matter. But nonetheless, M is a terrific movie.

The Elephant Man - 9/10
I always loved movies, but at the age of 16 or 17, I started "studying" film.. Kubrick was my first favorite director, until this girl I met on the first day of college introduced me to David Lynch. I went out and bought the VHS (and of Eraserhead, both which I still have), and after my initial viewing, I haven't seen it since. Never thought about it until my sister mentioned how her acting teacher loves it (after she told me he loves the films I love), so I just watched it for the second time after 15 years.
Maybe there was something in my subconscious preventing me from having the desire to watch this film. I know a few people in here who won't watch a film with animal torture - well, this is a film about the torture of a human being; physically and mentally. You see what's wrong with the world watching this film, directly or indirectly. I couldn't help but think of what's been going on, and what a sick society we live in. Millions are still crying over 1 dead lion, but no one seems to flinch to the fact that right now bombs are being dropped on innocent women and children (since men don't count, one nation totally divisible), but I guess that's not popular. A stockbroker mentality for "values".
This man is exploited because of a physical deformity, to no fault of his own, just like many. Most people don't have the uniqueness of "The Elephant Man" but have other physical and/or mental characteristics that disable them from engaging in society. They don't have names like Cecil.
John Merrick finds it difficult to trust people, which is understandable. But unlike most in society, he doesn't have the chance because of his deformity to express himself, to lash out at society. As stated in the film, people are afraid of what they don't understand. Even the doctor (Hopkins) wonders if he's just like any of the other exploiters. Everyone seems to use everyone. Sometimes for good, sometimes for bad, showing the not-so-better parts of people.
The acting is great, amongst main characters such as Anthony Hopkins, but also a few minor characters. Very well directed. I highly recommend this film, and I highly recommend trying as best we can to display some humanity whenever possible.

Life is Sweet (1990) - Mike Leigh
As I was starting to write this I was thinking about the two daughters on the poster and how brilliantly those strange characters are portrayed and how they are the highlight of the film - and then I started thinking about their parents and how their good natured humour and love for their family and friends is really what this is about - and then I thought about their odd group of friends and how their quirky personalities really elevate the film ... What that all means is that the reason this movie is great is that there is a collection of perfectly written and acted characters that together make this an incredibly happy, sad and, most importantly, enjoyable film. There is always some darkness in Leigh's films but he is amazingly adept at finding hope within his characters. This is an excellent movie that I think I will rate higher when I watch it again.

Os Verdes Anos a.k.a. The Green Years
(Paulo Rocha,1963)
http://www.cinept.ubi.pt/images/bd/c25251f09870314b2820b72174799d82.jpg
If Truffaut and Godard had a son and he was Portuguese, he would probably have done something really similar to this movie. Os Verdes Anos is one of the most important films of the portuguese cinema because it started what can be called as the Portuguese New Wave, or Novo Cinema Português, a movement greatly influenced by the French New Wave.
It's a perfect portrait of the Portugal of the 60s, a poor country under the siege of a dictatorship, where "God, Country and Family" is the national motto. The way relationships are formed is nicely presented by Paulo Costa always with a subtle social and politic critique to the conditions in which people outside of Lisbon live in.
Lisbon is famous by its natural light, I already knew that. What I didn't know is how gorgeous that city is on black and white. I felt so urged to go there after watching the film, and I don't even like the city. The way this movie is shot is brilliant using the best of what the city has to offer.
The soundtrack was almost entirely composed and played by Carlos Paredes, the master of Portuguese guitar, which gives it a more traditional feeling while keeping everything as sober as possible. The acting is quite nice, Rui Gomes is a sort of portuguese Jean Paul Belmondo. The ending is of a typical film noir, another reference to the French Nouvelle Vague.
My only complaint is the dubbing which is extremely amateurish... Maybe because they lacked the money to do better, I find it common on Portuguese cinema of this time.
A masterpiece I didn't know my country had.

It doesn't beat Vertigo IMO, but it's my second favourite by Hitchcock! Cary Grant delivers a great performance and Eva Saint is incredibly charming, better than any James Bond, giving life to a brilliant script.
Technically is awesome, supporting my idea that Hitch is always better in color! The pacing is particularly awesome!

This movie was so cliche'. Two kids from different sides of town becoming friends and growing up with family and social problems together. One attempts to do a massacre but fails and the other succeeds. Let's see, we have a pedophile priest, jocks that take advantage of a girl and harass the boy, father that sleeps around, a pill popping mother who tries to commit suicide, another father that is handicap and cruel, another mother who just doesn't care and a gym coach who is just a big bully himself. Yup, very cliche'. There was a lot of good killings and plenty of blood.

Life of Brian - Comedies are usually hit or miss with me and this felt like a lot of misses made into one movie. I enjoy crude stuff like religious jokes but this just felt too dumb for me. I have to admit I haven't seen any Monty Python before this but I guess you can say it's just not my type of humor.
2
The Game - wow. just wow. David Fincher once again comes out with an amazing movie. This was just everything I loved. Mystery, Michael Douglas, twist endings and Fincher's style. The twists felt so perfect and were hidden really well. They took a good premise and made it astounding.. It'd be really crazy if this actually happened in real life. It's so weird to think that people consider this one of Finchers' worst.
4.5
Friends with Benefits - I saw this on TV and it had Mila Kunis so I decided to watch. It's a decent rom-com that is pretty funny but nothing spectacular. By the end, it turned out to be really cliche and her looks couldn't carry me through the whole movie.
2.5
Identity Thief - I had a headache so I didn't feel like getting out of bed and this was on after F.W.B. so I decided to watch it. I really wish I just fell asleep because this was just god awful. Bateman provides all the laughs and McCarthy is just there to be like... "haha she's fat this is so funny" which is pretty messed up and sadly works for some people.

I have to admit I haven't seen any Monty Python before this but I guess you can say it's just not my type of humor.

Friends with Benefits - I saw this on TV and it had Mila Kunis so I decided to watch. It's a decent rom-com that is pretty funny but nothing spectacular. By the end, it turned out to be really cliche and her looks couldn't carry me through the whole movie.

Just ehhh
Gyllenhaal was actually pretty good as you'd expect, and I think he looked the part very well, but he didn't have much to work with.
Extremely predictable, so much so that you will know the whole story in 5 minutes (or 3 if you watched the trailer ;) ). This should have been a performance driven movie and sadly the only one of note was Jake.
Also a little less focus on the daughter next time, she really had some painfully awkward moments of acting. Sorry to slam on a child actor, but it just stuck out that much.
