Terminal (Vaughn Stein): What looks like a visually striking neo-noir is actually a slow-paced "double-edged sword" of a movie which had it not been for the performances of Margot Robbie (as the femme fatale), Simon Pegg (as a cancer-stricken teacher who becomes suicidal), Dexter Fletcher and Max Irons (as two bickering hitmen), would have been complete and utter crap. The film has two separate stories in which Robbie is connected slowly and I mean at a snail's pace merges but the twist reveals are quite noteworthy, with the finale going into a truly "WTH" kind of deal.
Final Rating: C (either you will want to give it a second view or not even bother...your call. I chose the former.)

6.5/10. Very good movie. A little porno at times and a bit too stretched in the middle. But still a fun watch!

The Belko Experiment
(Greg McLean)

The third act in this film is where I started to have some fun, since it finally embraced the film it was desperately trying to emulate; Battle Royale. Everything before then is what I kind of hate in movies, an uncontrollable dread.
I want to compare it to Blindness, the Fernando Meirelles film starring Julianne Moore who is the only person who can see in a world that has gone blind. A small community of people gather in this building where they try to live out their life while dealing with this blinding whiteness 24/7. Chaos ensues when a small fraction of people decide they want to play God and 'take-over' the complex. They rape, steal and threaten death towards people. All while blind. The one person who can see....does absolutely nothing. It infuriates me right now just thinking about it. So to see a somewhat similar thing here, where a small group of people all of a sudden feel powerful because they have guns and they decide who is going to die...it gets under my skin. Just the thought of having no power of my own life and it being dictated by some a*hole with a gun. The question of "who are you to dictate out lives" is brought up.
The Belko company goes into lock-down with 80 employees locked inside. A voice over the telecoms tells them that they need to kill 30 people in 2 hours, or 60 will die. Some people try to escape and their heads blow-up. Each person has had a small bomb implanted in their heads under false pretenses. Can you kill a friend? A Co-worker? These people find out very quickly and discover that the bloodshed does not stop there.
Battle Royale in an office setting. Beginning and end of story here. While we try to follow a few key people in this building, we mainly follow Michael, John Gallagher Jr. as he tries to calm people down, think rationally and think of ways to escape. Others, like Tony Goldwyn go into self defense mode. His rational is that he has kids, he deserves to survive over someone who is over 60. A small group of other characters pop in and out, played by familiar faces like Michael Rooker and John C. McGinley.
Characters do some stupid things, some characters think they're doing smart things. One person hides for most of the film. Smart person...until the end when they decide to just ride an elevator down to the main lobby. You stay out of sight the entire film, only to let everyone know you're in the lobby with the elevator ding? Come on.
Written by James Gunn, directed by McLean, who helmed Wolf Creek, Belko doesn't shy away from gore. People get shot, set on fire, impaled, explode and smashed in the face with objects. It relishes in the gore presented on the screen. I wanted this film is have more fun with itself, maybe subvert a few expectations, it instead walks that direct line and offers nothing new.
All I know, is there is no way in hell I'd let my work put a 'tracking device' in my head.

Ouija (2014)
2.5
I was at a relative's house, and this was chosen. I like scary demon-like movies like this typically, but I knew the reviews were generally bad for it. I understand why, as it doesn't do anything new for the genre. It's a watchable movie worthy of seeing once, as the story and scares are good enough to keep your interest. Otherwise, it's nothing special.

From the passions list, I thought this was an ok movie mostly because of Marlene Dietrich. I also enjoyed Gary Cooper in it, but it seemed this was before his prime ability. The sound was a little rough, and it really made me consider the advances in film between the beginning and the end of the 30's. I liked the ending.

Traces of Sin (2017)
We watched Traces of Sin last night, which was very impressive. The opening sequence set the mood, and Polish cinematographer Piotr Niemyjski kept the tone throughout, supported by tasteful music cues by Takashi Ohmama.
It's surprising that "Traces" is director Kei Ishikawa's first feature. Do we have another budding Orson Welles? This guy knows what he's doing, and I thing he's sure to get international recognition.
Hikari Mitsushima, who plays the sister of the protagonist, really does the heavy lifting in the story, but everyone in the cast was first rate. It seems to me that there is increasing use of drawn out pauses in dialogue in order to create the atmosphere of importance. I've noticed the device in many American films as well. But the pacing didn't drag the film, and the two hour running time went by quickly.
The story was complex, but understandable, as long as one could keep the characters straight. Much of the story was related by use of frequent flashbacks placed at dramatic moments. And they seemed to gather steam, building to a climax which included several twists. It really was very clever. Westerners are not used to recognizing Japanese names, or even unique physical characteristics, so that takes some getting used to.
A couple of observations: We'd anticipated a hard R film, but in actuality it would likely be rated PG-13 in the States. It was refreshing to see everyone wearing nice clothing, rather than the rags and slob outfits we've become accustomed to here. It reflects on the admirable self-respect of the Japanese.
This is a first rate film, and we'll be looking for more from Kei Ishikawa.
Doc's rating: 9/10

Solitary Man
https://i.imgur.com/pPmBRj2.jpg
Ben Kalmen had everything. He had a successful job as a car salesman, a perfect wife, lots of friends and a daughter who loves him. But after he's caught by the police after tricking customers and told by the doctor to have developing heart problems his life starts to steadily go downhill. And now, 6 years later, he's turned into a womanizing sleazebag who acts like a wise, noble old man, but will stab anyone in the back if he gets an opportunity to. This movie is very hard to watch. Not in the terms of graphic content, but rather like a slideshow of regretful moments you would you could erase. The problem is that Kalmen doesn't get that his way of living is self-destructive. He has no job, he no longer has a wife, and his heart is getting worse by the minute, so what the hell right? Go your own way, do as you please. But as he keeps on losing more and more connections, even ruining his relationship with his new girlfriend, he pretty much stands alone. As a solitary man. Or did that already happen much longer ago?
Michael Douglas gives one of his most earnest performances as someone who has so many faults and has such an unlikeable personality you should hate him. But I don't. Instead, I feel pity for him. That he's so far deep into his hole that every time he manages to dig himself up, more earth falls down on him every time he makes decisons which range from bad to worse. The only one who doesn't give up on him even when he's at his lowest is his oldtime friend Jimmy Merino, played with sublety by Danny DeVito. The speech he gives about how he has managed to stay so faithful to his wife is beautiful. There's so much truth in what he said.
To get back on Kalmen, even when he's at his most cunning however, there's something about him that draws you in. Doesn't he have a weird amount of charm for being such an up-and-front douchebag? It makes you realize how he got away with it for so long. Why people labeled him as the most honest car dealer, because how can a smile like that do any wrong? And how bad can he be if he gives you useful life advice?
But it's just a fascade. He covers his own insecurities and flaws up by trying to glide through life like a careless, free-thinking playboy. No matter how bad things get, anything is better than confronting those issues. The question is just, how long can he do it before it finally destroys him?
If you hate watching character dramas about people with larger-than-life egos, I still recommend giving this one a chance. It's so much more than just watching a movie about someone behaving like a highclass jerk. It's about all of us. How any of us can feel like the solitary man, by yourself in an area of vacuum.
Michael Douglas is our day and age's most relatable big star.

Rampage is the best video game adaptation ever. Then again I'm not sure what the standard is (Resident Evil 1, that had it's charms). Anywho The Rock plays the most electrifying primatologist former US army special forces soldier (naturally) and hater of poachers. Dwayne specializes in taking care of gorillas in an animal sanctuary where he has a strong bond with the alpha an albino gorilla named George. After an explosion in a space station sends out gene altering mutagen that lands in the sanctuary, in a florida swamp, and in the wilderness where George, an Alligator and a Timber-wolf all become mutated.
The film has drawbacks...Naomi Harris exists her american accent is bad and her character really just exists for expository dialogue, and to punch Malin Ackerman in the face. George looks great, Lizzie(the lizard is acceptable), Ralph the Timberwolf eh...not so much. Also the film plays a little fast and loose with it's own science. The Rock has great chemistry with George and really that's the crux of the film when you get the tag-team battle at the end between The Rock and George vs Lizzie and Ralph it's dopey but still fun.
At points during this film you feel like your watching a solid PG-13 Predator movie.

I believe this movie has some significance in that it's partially based on a true story and it helped bring about some real changes. It's one of the tougher movies I've seen from the decade and one that suits my taste well. Good call Camo:up:

Passengers (2008)

This is the movie with Anne Hathaway for clarification, not the more recent movie of the same name with Jennifer Lawrence. This one is definitely a drama more than anything, and it tries to use a similar concept to Sixth Sense. Lots of character development and subsurface plot points, but it doesn't do either very well at all. Instead of having an "Aha!" kind of moment at the end, it's more of an "I just wasted my time watching this" moment. It never reels you in, and the plot twist element is poorly executed when examining the film in it's entirety.

I was interested in seeing this when it came out and then just forgot about it until I saw Mark give it a positive rating in his thread. It's a biopic on Bob Dylan, and it's done in a very original way. A wide variety of actors play him, which I liked, but what confused me was they went by different names in the movie. There was something more to it than just playing him; maybe they were playing representations of him or his thoughts, or something else. I think it's an easier movie to enjoy if you know what the director is trying to do and you're familiar with Dylan's story. My guess is that Mark is right on top of both, while I was just a notch above clueless. It's got a great cast, and I especially liked the parts with the little black kid and Christian Bale doing their Dylan things. Cate Blanchett as Dylan was interesting. There's definitely good things about the movie and of course the music is brilliant.

I picked this at random off the Ebert list for the 30's countdown. I took a quick peek at it's IMDb listing and saw that it was a historical picture. That's not something I normally like so I wasn't expecting much. In a very fortunate coincidence, however, it would be the third movie in the last week I've seen that stars the lovely Marlene Dietrich. I guess this would be called a biographical movie with creative liberties taken. Dietrich plays a modest young woman who's chosen to marry into the Russian royal family. She is promised that her new husband will be a good looking stud, and her biggest responsibility will be to bear him a son to be heir to the throne. Well she gets there and the guy is a total buffoon. She is interested in other men and they are interested in her. She will become Catherine the Great. This is a very lavish production for a movie of it's age. It also happens to be surprisingly sexy and hilarious, and when I say sexy I mean I thought it was hot. This movie was an awesome surprise to me.

It's interesting this because I didn't know until recently about the different right of succession in Russia. Catherine the Great appears in my favourite film, Münchhausen, in a very interesting way. Brigitte Horney plays the role and seems to echo Dietrich a lot.

Do not watch this movie. Period. It is like an art film student's movie gone wrong. It is so bad that it is now my Bad Movie watching group's worst rated movie ever.
Avoid it at all costs. Do not watch. If you have accidentally watched any of this movie, wash your brain and eyes out with copious amounts of vodka.
Every time this movie is watched, a lawyer gets his horns, a kitten dies and a new war is started.
Seriously, avoid it at all costs.

Laurel and Hardy star in this movie from the top 100 laughs list. I wouldn't call myself a fan of theirs but I don't dislike them either. It was an amusing 65 minutes and I could certainly relate to the premise of telling the wife you're going one place when you're going to another, and getting caught.

It tries so hard to be mature that it becomes childish.
The film tries to shape a certain Brazilian identity, but it's so miserable that makes me cringe. Kleber Mendonça Filho it's one of the worst brazilian directors working today. Some like to say that he has a certain style, I call this style "lack of talent".

Another bad Brazilian film (shame about our national circuit). Here in Brazil, the most successful national productions are poor productions (Elite Squad) disguised as thrillers, or idiot comedies. Maybe you know, but there is a big case of corruption being investigated here, including the former president of the country is imprisoned. The film portrays this giant scheme of corruption. If you take away the whole political scheme, there is nothing left! Where there should be cinema, art, there is the political product. As poorly conducted as any other national production of the great commercial circuit. Good Brazilian cinema is practically dead. Except only the directors of the indie circuit... And even in this smaller circle has a great amount of mediocrity! Indulgent cinema, bad cinema!
A few good performances were wasted by an incompetent director.

Wonderful movie that I hadn’t seen for a very long time. Surprising thing is that, almost 50 years later, the subject matter of a teenage boy having sex with his mother would be outrageously more scandalous today than it was in 1971. Different times.

I watched this because for some reason I thought it was supposed to be a disturbing Giallo. It's an erotic vampire tale which is fine, but I wish there were a bigger horror element. The vampire girl was hot but she kept reminding me of all the thick brush bordering my yard that I have to keep cutting back. It's a shame because I really liked the look of the movie. It wasn't bad to watch but it was mostly insignificant.

Too Late (2015)
So, I’m not sure if I liked this movie or if it’s just that John Hawkes is really that good of an actor.
At the beginning, a character wonders what would happen if characters in other movies could just be handed copies of the movies they’re in as a way of getting out their narrative troubles*. It’s an eye-roller and the rest of this movie maintains that same kind of try-hard, post-Tarantino, meta noir vibe but with none of QT’s confidence in its structure (the movie is divided into 5 segments, all out of chronological order and each shot in one long take) or style (maybe it’s less Tarantino and more Altman...)
But there are also these beautiful moments of poignancy when it chooses to focus on the titular theme of regret and, my god, does Hawkes make those moments sing (literally at one point.) Characterization is not the strong suit here so it’s really all up to the actors to fill in the blanks, some succeed, other don’t (plenty of characters fill stilted.)
So, I don’t know. I suppose the first three out of the five segments are really good, though not without their clunky moments, and the last two are kind of disappointing, though not without their good ones. The reveals at the end of each do add up in a certain bitterness but not as much as it leads to believe. It merits a watch or two. I look forward to whatever director Dennis Hauck does next, if only to verify if this some kind of fluke.
*I think this makes it sound like there’s some 4th wall breaking but there isn’t any. It’s just very meta.

Patriots Day (2016) (Dir. Peter Berg) 1
https://i.imgur.com/nLnUuck.jpg
Championing America's mythologized self-conception obscuring the imperialism that fuels these attacks, Patriots Day draws upon the same scapegoats George Bush peddled in his "Why do they hate us?" speech all those years ago: It's our freedom, our multiculturalism, our democracy!
The boat Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was found hiding inside of had a message scrawled inside outlining his motive for the crime: US wars in the middle east and the slaughter of the innocent as a result. Any movie purporting to interrogate terrorist acts that doesn't address the long history of US instigation is nothing but agitprop.
From Lone Survivor to Deepwater Horizon to Patriots Day, Peter Berg is Leni Riefenstahl for the American Empire, working exclusively to protect power. This is porno for boot lickers.

Airplane was one of the first classic comedy films I've seen and still one of my favourites! This one, even if it doesn't have as many as legendary moments, is still very good! However I feel that it's constantly trying too much and not all jokes work. Made me laugh a couple of times though.

Davis likes to put himself in a place like "I'm a victim of society," as if he were right and the rest of the world was wrong. It's funny how he likes to victimize the characters (in this case, the 'shorts' were based on his own experiences as can be heard in the commentary). It is true that in many cases of homosexuality, people go through problems due to society's ignorance. This topic has already yielded great films (Philadelphia and Happy Together comes to mind) in these cases, characters who suffer at the hands of abusive people who can not respect a different choice is shown in a way without taking exactly one 'side'. Davis makes a great propaganda (homosexuals deserve their place in the world, stop victimizing them. See what you do with the poor guy.) trying all the time to show the solitary soul of the central character, as a totally sad, and problematic drawing. All this because of sexual repression. The constant question, "What am I doing wrong?" is all around. He victimizes the character foolishly (The evil boys who commit bully...).
I totally agree, when someone says that we should respect people regardless of sexual options. That's how I was created.
I believe that in cinema, the most important thing is how you tell the story, Davis uses the cliché way of storytelling, he has a quiet domain over the camera, but the structure is poor, and his wanderer who sits in the corners weeping as a foreclosed does not convince me at all.
Also, I believe that anyone who thinks he's part of the minority who suffers at the hands of the majority, are idiots. All of us, by one thing or another, are part of the minority, and in others aspects part of the majority — I listen to Doom Meal and Suicidal Black Metal, when I go to places that play this kind of music, there are ten or twelve people there, when I was a kid, there were other children who used to make fun of me because they did not understand my style of life. This has always made me part of this minority. However, if we talk about the politics of my country, I am part of the majority — We, as individuals, are many more than our sexual choice (or any other choise of lifestyle), people who victimize themselves because they're part of a minority are weak.
Patriots Day (2016) (Dir. Peter Berg) rating_1
https://i.imgur.com/nLnUuck.jpg
Championing America's mythologized self-conception obscuring the imperialism that fuels these attacks, Patriots Day draws upon the same scapegoats George Bush peddled in his "Why do they hate us?" speech all those years ago: It's our freedom, our multiculturalism, our democracy!
The boat Dzhokhar
was found hiding inside of had a message scrawled inside outlining his motive for the crime: US wars in the middle east and the slaughter of the innocent as a result.
Well if you must go into the politics I would remind you Dzhokhar was an asylum seeker. So while America is this big bad scary mean country he was more than willing to try and get into one of the 195 other countries.
Also what was the propaganda of Deepwater Horizon?
Davis likes to put himself in a place like "I'm a victim of society," as if he were right and the rest of the world was wrong. It's funny how he likes to victimize the characters (in this case, the 'shorts' were based on his own experiences as can be heard in the commentary). It is true that in many cases of homosexuality, people go through problems due to society's ignorance. Obviously i can't even begin to broach this without seeing the film but this is incredible to me if i'm reading it right. Davies grew up a homosexual in a 1950's/1960's working class environment, can't you imagine that he has experience with being victimized for who he is? And don't you think he's the right sort of person to speak to these issues having the experience that neither of us have had? I know someone whose favourite film is The Long Day Closes precisely because Davies portrayed his own upbringing as a homosexual so well, i think it's only a good thing that there's art being made directed towards marginalized people like young Homosexuals. I understand not liking the film especially when you can't relate to it not having the same types of experiences but calling it propaganda and Davies a jerk for trying to speak to his experiences sounds like it comes from a place of prejudice to me. And it's laughable to fault Davies for not trying to portray his oppressors side as if they have genuine reasons for mistreating someone due to sexual orientation, also Happy Together isn't even about oppression so i'm not sure why you mentioned that.
Davis makes a great propaganda (homosexuals deserve their place in the world, stop victimizing them.See what you do with the poor guy.)
So what do you disagree with the bold? Sounds like he was speaking of what he knows and relating something any civilized 21st century human should agree with. Doesn't mean you have to do anything for homosexuals other than treat them like normal people.
I totally agree, when someone says that we should respect people regardless of sexual options.
It really doesn't sound like it. Sounds like you have a major problem with a homosexual speaking out against ill treatment he and many others suffered and asking for it to stop.
Jesus dude you are comparing music taste with sexual orientation, one of those has a very long deep history of oppression that still goes on today.
However, if we talk about the politics of my country, I am part of the majority — We, as individuals, are many more than our sexual choice (or any other choise of lifestyle), people who victimize themselves because they're part of a minority are weak.
You think homosexuals victimize themselves? There's no history of unjust mistreatment of homosexuals? Also homosexuality is not a choice.
I hope we're not going towards another "the Jews were responsible for their own holocaust during WWII" scenario.

Also what was the propaganda of Deepwater Horizon?
Definitely the least insidious of the three, it places the blame of a fossil fuel driven environmental crises at the foot of bureaucracy and (albeit bad) regulation.
Nobody walks away from that film mad at the right kind of people or the state of the system. it's not an indictment of an entire way of life that will eventually endanger far more vast and precarious populations than those just atop a rig. In his op ed for Guardian, he confirms his film is an indictment of nobody. Just human folly. We're all complicit. No lessons to be learned here.
At the end of the day, we might be the best thing that could happen for BP. Nobody thought the cement pour would have led to what it did. Vidrine and Kaluza were wrong, but there was no criminal intent there. We are clear on that. BP behaved as a company for profit, which it is – but we all participate in capitalist society. Every time we drive a car or fly in an airplane, we are all complicit in this relationship. BP isn’t some great devil forcing us to live these lifestyles. BP had many problems drilling that well that certainly weren’t all BP’s fault – that was why it was called “the well from hell”. I think we made BP look reasonable in its reactions to events.
https://www.theguardian.com/film/2016/oct/04/the-well-from-hell-my-fight-with-bp-to-film-deepwater-horizon
Of course, at least BP was against the film being made at all despite its impotent criticism of anything. The same can't be said for the US military who aided the production of Lone Survivor as they do with many a film about US military operations. Always a good sign that you're protecting power instead of balancing it. With those movies, it's mainly about which stories you tell. Never the ones that implicate any wrongdoing on the part of the an imperial army occupying most of the planet produced by a country that's been in almost perpetual war since its inception.
I couldn't find anything about the FBI collaborating with the filmmaker for Patriots Day, but once again, you'll find pandering beyond what I outlined in my initial review. A memorable outrage is the idea that FBI personnel, Kevin Bacon in the film, are sensitive or even cautious about mislinking acts of terror to Islam and the middle east. Most terror plots you hear about in the news linked to even an organization as reprehensible as ISIS are, upon closer inspection, FBI entrapping incapable crackpots by posing as ISIS themselves. Trevor Aaronson has an entire book on the subject called The Terror Factory: Inside the FBI's Manufactured War on Terrorism. Here's (https://soundcloud.com/citationsneeded/ep-31-fake-isis-plots-and-the-selling-of-forever-war) a great episode of a podcast hosted by two journalists who I respect a great deal detailing some accounts of what are essentially false flag hoaxes.
To digress, you'll notice all three of the films I mention stick mostly in real time which allows him to maintain most facts in regards to actual actions while ignoring whatever context doesn't support his narrative. Not even his own original take on propaganda given Paul Greengrass did it first. Quite an insidious way to claim impartiality when depicting any situation which hinges on bridging superficial conception and requires a great deal more information to understand properly.
Well if you must go into the politics
That's perhaps your most egregious claim. That I'm inserting politics into a film with obvious political aims depicting an event driven by expressly political forces. That's exactly how propaganda is supposed to work. It's passive. It's absorbing messaging you don't even realize on the most conscious, intelligible level. Hence why it's dangerous.

The Star Chamber- 3 out of 5
I have to admit I got distracted from this movie by a couple of emails and phone calls I needed to take/answer promptly. And even tho I may rewatch it at some time to give it a fair chance; it wasn't really gripping me all that much. The premise and acting power seemed interesting- judges frustrated with a broken legal system decide to mete their own justice out to merciless criminals. And I usually am a fan of mystery thrillers and/or legal thrillers like this. But it really just all boiled down to vigilantism; and a conflicted Michael Douglas who, to me, in this film, didn't seem to carry the weight that Gene Hackman or Clint Eastwood have in similarly themed movies.
It's a fairly old film -1983- but of a time when these type of movies were so well crafted. Wonder if those of you who have seen it- without interruptions - recommend another viewing?
For now, it's one I might save for a rainy day, when the phone doesn't ring.

This film bolstered strong critical reception (although, it bombed at the box-office), and while I didn't honestly, truly expect a great film, although I enjoyed it, I still leave with disappointment. If we went by my expectations heading in, I was pleasantly treated, but, if we went by how my expectations raised while watching the film, I think it could be said that I don't believe the film met its own potential. The concept is very good, even if the explanation behind it was not, and the actors involved delivered good performances, even if the sudden shift of Jason Sudeikis' character felt more than a little abrupt. I liked the actors, I liked the idea, and yet, for some reason, I can't really explain, something felt "off" about the film the whole way through. The way the events were strung together, the way certain characters carried themselves, somethings always felt "not right" to me. Still liked it though.

For most, you are correct. However, for some, it is. I had a friend who went homosexual because it was much easier for him to get laid that way. Very few things are absolute for everybody.

I had a friend who went homosexual because it was much easier for him to get laid that way. Wait, what? If he went homosexual because he finds it easier to come along with men, it would still be pretty weird, but almost understandable. But to just be able to get laid? Well, he must be bisexual, then. A truly heterosexual guy would rather die a virgin than have gay sex in a normal environment.
EDIT: On second thought I do know a lesbian who was so desperate to have sex that she had sex with a man. Well, who knows...

Sounds like he was always Bi but with a preference for women.

Avengers: Infinity War
(The Russo Brothers)
https://i.imgur.com/xhx2agd.jpg

The first Avengers film set the bar high for future Marvel flicks. When it was first announced I laughed at the concept and claimed it wouldn't work. Then they announced Joss Whedon as the director and I became increasingly optimistic. The film was a success in my books, managing to juggle multiple characters, while maintaining an engaging story that was entertaining and funny. Seeing all these characters on screen together for the first time was refreshing, exciting and challenging. When the sequel, Age of Ultron came out, it was met with a less than thrilling response. It was more of the same. The freshness of seeing these characters on screen together was gone. We got more of the same and a villain that did not seem as grandiose of Loki. While still a good film, it didn't meet the high expectations and felt like filler in a sense. Now we enter Infinity War, the first half of "one" film. This is the 'ending' film that the entire series has been building towards (I say since Avengers, others say since Iron Man).
Now we are juggling even more characters. Looking back at the first, there were six Avengers. That seems so incredibly small now compared to what Civil War and now Infinity War has thrown at us. How the Russo Brothers managed to find enough time to justify everyone's presence is beyond me, but it works. It helps that the heavy lifting for this film was done with every single film that came before it. Without those stand alone movies, none of the character interactions would work. None of the emotional beats would work. Take notes Justice League.
Thanos is looking for those darn stones again. This time he's actually putting the work in himself. He's collected a few so far and coming after the rest. Once he gets them, he plans on wiping out half the universe's population. Can the Avengers, who have since broken up since Civil War, manage to come together and save the world?
While the film does feel incomplete in a way, I was okay with how it all went down. This is more of a film about Thanos than it is The Avengers. Brought to life with a great performance from Josh Brolin, he blends himself effortlessly with the CGI creation. His interactions with Gamora are some of the best stuff in this film. That incompleteness is a double edge sword. I applaud the boldness of the ending, but it also has no emotional weight for me. With how the marketing machine works, we all know what is down the pipeline for those characters and their future films. One the initial shock wears off and you think about it, it feels like an empty promise. Only time will tell how bold that choice was, I'm leaning on the not so much side.
The film is 2 and a half hours long and it doesn't feel like it. This film hits the gas pedal from the very beginning and it never lets go. I was surprised at how fast the film was getting to the action and how well paced it all felt. At times it does feel rushed, Thanos has been after these stones for almost 20 films now and it all happens in one. Some plot points are glossed over in expository dialogue that I felt could have had some more resonance with some imagery, but as a whole the film works.
I felt like the film was concerned with making the action the central focus. It wanted to have a lot of 'cool comic book moments' for fans and worry about the plot progression later. I'm okay with this, since the plot was fairly singular in its focus. Thanos needs dem stones as my friend put it. So the vast fan-base will be in awe of the action pieces where they get to see Thor being a bad-ass, Spider-Man geek out at his costume, Dr. Strange dazzle us visually and the most interesting aspect to me, new character interactions working together. Seeing Strange help Quill fight Thanos was fun. That's the main takeaway from this film, it was fun.

Three billboards outside.....
Was looking forward to this movie ever since the trailer. Then there was the Oscar buzz. Finally got around to seeing it.
Well, the strongest element is the characters, you do feel for some. You do somewhat get to know them in the short snapshot of time the movie is set.
After having slowly gotten to this point, it feels as if things are left incomplete. Perfectly understandable if a traditional ending is not adhered to. No country for old men being a prime example. However...the difference was no country felt like it had ended and/or felt like a story had been told if you don’t agree with it having ended.
3 billboards didn’t do either well enough. Overall Good acting and characters with depth is not enough....for this particular film.

https://www.cineworld.co.uk/xmedia-cw/repo/articles/other/Deadpool-2-Cable.jpg
Deadpool 2, saw this opening night and the big question is after Black Panther and Avengers Infinity War how does this stack up? Do we have Super Hero fatigue? Would the jokes and irreverence of the first one carry on to the second one?
The basic plot of the story is Cable is a mutant soldier from the future sent to the past to kill the man who later grow up to murder his family. Deadpool ends up the moral center (huh?) of the film because he doesn't want this child to be murdered.
Unlike the first one we don't have the traditional "big bad", the villains are very much earned as the story progresses. Really the strength of the film is that the comedy comes first, the violence second and the world building.......way way way back. You will definitely leave the film questioning the continuity and logic of the certain things in the film which if you do...you miss the point.
Also I'd like to talk about the marketing of the film...once again Deadpool did a fantastic job. A number of the jokes in the trailers do not show up in the film(which you will be grateful for) but what makes it even better is they don't show you the best bits. They also manage to hide certain plot twists as you have two fairly major cameos. It's also a film that peaks with it's end credits, perhaps the best end credits for a super hero film ever.
rating_4 - welcome to the golden age of comic book films. I think people are going to have a lot of trouble deciding what was the best comic film of the year between Black Panther, Infinity War, and Deadpool 2.

3 billboards is a film that attempts to subvert your expectations. You go into thinking it's a murder mystery, but really it's a morality tale about several individuals who really can't live with the repercussions of the murder. Does the ending conclude the story...no, because it's not about the story. The ending is the best moment for the characters.
Neither Dixon or Mildred will ever manage to catch the rapist but they are going off to kill a rapist. How that story will end for either one is going to be bad, Dixon isn't going to manage to get away with what they are about to do. Mildred has decided that she won't rebuild her life with James, and Dixon isn't going to kill himself instead he's going to basically martyr himself for Mildred.

Can't get enough of the chemistry between Lemmon and Matthau! There is just something about them yelling at each other that makes me feel really good, and enjoy every bit of it. Also I find the movie itself very entertaining. The satiric view on the newspaper buisness and the journalist portrayed as hyenas and notorious liars is brilliant. The last scene is splendid as well.

Avengers: Infinity War
Finally I went to see this on IMAX, and this movie didn't disappoint me (like The Last Jedi did).
Does this movie deserve the current IMDB rating of 8.8? No, it doesn't and the score will further drop.
Is this a perfect Marvel Movie? I think this is likely the highest standard so far in all Marvel movies.
Things I didn't like were the common and usual issues all Marvel movies had:
- Not well written
- So much room to improve in film editing
etc...
The ending was something, but it wasn't as effective as Marvel fans claimed it to be. Let's be honest, we all know that things will be turned around eventually for those who died.
Talking about a really emotional ending? Below was way better, because we knew this was serious when we watched it the first time.

Total Recall
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--RZ8i5mcIP8/UBBgPY-i-WI/AAAAAAAAB6A/D6PEPbmfUmA/s1600/Total+Recall-Nose+Bug.jpg
Total Recall is an Arnold classic. While most of his movies are fun to watch, this probably has the most impressive story out of them.
It's a good ol' remnant of the past kind of tale! Quaid has a charming and sex hungry wife, but a very routine job. He has a weird recurring dream about Mars and also keeps seeing ads on TV about Mars, so he gets tempted to go there. Of course, it's not the ”real” Mars, but a very realistic reconstruction. Lori tells him not to go, but he ignores her and decides to go anyway. He also gets the opportunity to change his identity for fun, and he picks a secret agent on a deadly mission (Why on earth anyone would want to choose this on their vacation is beyond me), but something goes wrong. He starts speaking in prophetic terms, and the people behind the program erase his memories so he won't remember Rekall.
Now here's where it gets a bit tricky: After people start acting fishy towards him, including one of his co-workers, it turns out his wife is not his real wife, but intended as a permanent distraction so he would forget about who he used to be and what he did on Mars.
And that's where I'll stop summing up. This movie is full of imagination and beautiful exemplary visuals of a strange futuristic society where some people look like freaks due to suffering from a lack of oxygen. Which is thanks not only to the iconic sci-fi writer Philip Dick, but also Paul Verhoeven, who perfectly balances the scary and the absurd. And in some ways, the world is still the same as it always was: a big power holding a monopoly on all its citizens to the result of everyone else having it worse off, but the capital itself kicking back with no considerable worries and caring for nothing but themselves. Verhoeven portrays society as bleakly militarized, with unflinching realistic violence and red-lit but broken surroundings.
Even looking aside the politics, it's still a remarkably wellmade and entertaining film. Michael Ironside turns in another iconic performance as the no-nonsense villain Richter, whose crazy glare and commanding attitude is as effective as it always was. Arnold is ramped up to 100 percent, showcasing some of the most expressive faces he has done in his career. Sharon Stone first gives the vibes of a little-too-familiar kindhearted wife, only to later turn completely ice-cold once we found out she's not who we thought she were. The scene where Quaid starts to fight an unknown foe and it shows to be her I could predict due to the shadow shape, but nevertheless the revelation is expertly done. It's from here that Stone really starts to shine, and comes off as possibly the deadliest villain in the movie. In terms of acting, there is not a single dull spot. Rachel Nicotin gives a memorable portrayal as Melina, the real wife of George Quaid. Mel Johnson Jr. was very over-the-top in his role, but in a way that still works.
I think I'll stop at here. Movies regarded as high-quality by a lot of people is usually not my forte, as I feel like I'm repeating what a lot of others already have said. But if you haven't been convinced yet, go see it! Do it for Mars. Do it for Arnold.
P.S. If that image of Arnold gives you nightmares, I apologize. But it's too damn great not to share.

3/5
Thank you. That’s an interesting take. I think you’re probably spot on which what the film makers were trying to achieve. In terms of the assumption that that person they were going to “meet” was a rapist. I think they left it vague in terms of what would happen. I’m not convinced they would have killed him. The clues are there that he’s a messed up war veteran. Maybe the point of it is that he is affected by violence and they are affected by violence in a different way and it makes both do pretty awful things.?Saying all that...I just felt the movie could have done it all better. Don’t ask me how..it just felt a bit empty imo.

I, Anna (2012) is very tasty mystery/thriller/noir, with a little Hitchcock thrown in. The two stars, Charlotte Rampling and Gabriel Byrne, turn in seasoned and subtle performances. Rampling carries the movie in portrayal of a recent divorcee who has a past, along with some serious emotional issues. Byrne is the police detective who is allured by her, and ends up suspecting her of murder. Eddie Marsan is predictably good as an associate detective.
The film holds one's interest, and goes by fairly quickly. The plot gets a little complex at the end, and there are several surprises.
This is one of those films folks could easily miss, but will be pleasantly surprised at how well done it is.
Available on Netflix, streaming services and rental.

The Conjuring (2013) – 7.5/10
I watched this in two sittings and thought it was extremely well done. I was conscious of the first half being a lot better than the second.
Very good cast as well; I find Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga a very engaging combination so it's good that there's a sequel and potentially a third film to come.
I made some comparison with the scares to The Woman in Black (2012) which I think is actually a lot more frightening. Of course like The Entity (1982), which I still think is the scariest horror film, The Conjuring is based on a real case so that adds a lot of weight and interest to the story. Wasn't it great the way they did the end credits :)?
Primal Fear (1996)
It was OK. I'd been picking up peripheral praise about the movie but never retaining specifics as to why it was lauded. Once I started watching it the picture starts off very grisly so I was intrigued. By the end of the film, and the final twist - I was kind of feeling duped because I already knew what was what. Reminded me of the big, dopey surprise of The Usual Suspects.
It was OK.

I happened to turn this on while browsing channels, and it immediately drew me in. Not sure how I completely forgot about this movie coming out a few years ago given the cast of Jennifer Lawrence, Robert DeNiro, and Bradley Cooper, but it was a well-rounded film. Based on a true story and researching shows that it didn't fabricate or fictionalize too much. A little funny, a little depressing, a little charming and inspiring. Not outstanding but certainly worth a watch.

It is interesting that you re-watched one of your favorite childhood movie and found out that the movie wasn't that great, though the movie still had a lot of magic in Number 5 in today's standard.
Things I didn't like:
- Poor dialogue
- Inconsistency
- Some lazy writing
One thing that totally amazed me was that Fisher Stevens acting like an Indian dude, and I absolutely got fooled, that Indian accent was so pure to me.

Incredible film, especially the first half, even though I think it drags a little during the "bridge" segment, and the score, while brilliant, tends to be a tad overused - and misused - at times imo (the final shootout is beautiful and epic but I think it would have been better without the bombastic music).
I still give it a perfect rating because it's so damn iconic in every other way.

From the laughs list, A fun loving married couple are killed while recklessly driving their sports car. That's not the funniest part though. They become ghosts who can't get into heaven until they commit a good deed. They end up helping their old cranky banker friend Cosmo Topper loosen up a little. Soon he's drinking, getting into trouble, and the chicks dig him. It all ends up helping his marriage to his equally stuffy wife. It's a rather fun movie to watch. Cary Grant plays the lousy driver/dead husband/ghost.

Kind of like Heat meets The Shield but not nearly as good as either. I enjoyed it more than I'm rating it. It's just that there's a shortage of machismo in movies these days and this gave me something I've been missing. Most of the movie is buildup rather than action, and maybe it's a little long. I'm not a Gerard Butler fan but he's certainly adept at playing an ahole. My wife liked it even more than I did. Strangely enough, we were able to relate to it more than most other movies. Now back to reality and off to do the food shopping like a little bitch.

The Sword Of Doom (1966)
Its been a while since I rated a film with full marks but The Sword Of Doom is more than worthy of the accolade. For me this film had absolutely everything and there's not one part of it that I could fault. Its so dark and thought-provoking and although its not the most intricate in terms of plot, its still an exceptional one. Nakadai and Mifune both give impeccable performances, although its hard not to pick out the former as he has the screen time. Despite his character's disturbing and merciless actions, he our anti-hero, who just seems to descend into madness, with some really impressive swordplay. Visually, I thought it was stunning. It would be easy to pick the early forest scene but really, you could pause the film anytime and you would be left a gorgeously shot scene. The ending was so different to what I expected and I imagine it still does draw some negative responses but not from me. The perfect end to a perfect film. A new favourite.

Battle of the Sexes (2017) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4622512/)
Just about what one would expect from this kind of movie: it's sort of fun, sort of OK and a whole lot of: movie making by the numbers.
I try to watch newer films, and the really well made American/Hollywood films are few and far between....At least of the films I've been watching from 2017. I haven't really seen anything from last year that really impressed me as sublime film making. I suppose in case of a comedy like Battle of the Sexes one shouldn't expect much.
I did find Steve Carell to be hilarious as the outrageous Bobby Riggs. The scene where he checks into a gamblers anonymous meeting and proceeds to tell everyone that there that don't have a gambling problem! they just suck at it!..and need to learn to gamble better, was hilarious! I actually laughed out loud at the whole scene.
I guess Emma Stone was fine as Billie Jean King, a bit stoic, then again the real Billie Jean was probably a bit stoic too.
Well not a bad way to spend 2 hours, I guess.

Excellent indie movie. First time director, who happens to be Jake & Maggie Gyllenhaal’s mother. Ensemble cast of famous people. Simple plot of 2 girls falling for the same guy, but delightfully done.

Annihilation. 7/10, the alien rape scene was kinda weird
Den of Thieves (2018) 3.5
Good heist movie with military style engagements.

Annihilation (2018) 3.5
Some didn't like the ending, I liked the ending and it made me want to re-watch it with foresight in mind. The movie is self contained, but there is room for sequel I would welcome, after all there are two more books in the series.

Standard comedy good for one view, IMO.

Avengers: Infinity War (2018) 4
It was a treat to have so many superheroes in one well made movie. I can't wait for sequel.

I wanted to hug her. Also wise that she did most of the talking.

★★★★
Very good movie. Alessandra Negrini was awesome in this one.
The film is about an artistic past, inventoried, and this inventory includes shadow theater, posed nudity, the electric train, and even a battle staged in a disconcerting way, among other things.
