How all movies should be made. Master shots with the shlt together
Brilliant, heartfelt, curious and entertaining throughout...
BBT's masterpiece of storytelling and character...

a truly beautiful film with a fine dose of ridiculous humor and sentiment.

I agree with you. Sling Blade was an unusual story with a great screenplay and acting by Billy Bob Thornton. His performance catapulted him into stardom. His screenplay won the Oscar that year, and he could've won for Best Actor. But 1996 was a good year for films. Geoffrey Rush won it for Shine.

What did you not like about it? Its in the vein of Weerasethakul's other movies and deals with death, spirituality and reincarnation. Albeit not his best movie, its not a movie which stands out in a bad way in his auteurship.

I love how the covers look the same. Both films talk about inner demons. Jeff Bridges was incredible in Crazy Heart, but he had to fight against Cooper, an beginner director, who leaves much to be desired at certain moments of Bridges' strong performance. It is clear the evolution of the director in the second film, valuing more the performances, and what great performances (Bale, Affleck, Harrelson, Whitaker, you namet it). A great movie, but even with Cooper's evolution, a bolder director would have made this film a masterpiece!

Two masterpieces, one from this century, and the other from the past one:

Despite Tony Curtis' dominate, yet two dimensional, performance, Lepke (1975) was sort of a bore. The problem with this movie is the script - the screenwriter basically took newspaper headlines from the 40s and developed a movie around that - yet, there was little to no mention of Murder, INC. in the movie. Obviously made to ride the wave of Godfather hype, Lepke certainly has its moments, but ultimately belongs to stay in obscurity. The poster is easily the best part of the movie.

Being a big Ellroy and L.A. Confidential (1997) fan, I really wanted to like The Black Dahlia when it came out back in 2006, but didn't. I thought to myself this past weekend: "Hey, it's over 10 years later. I've grown, I've matured, maybe older me will like it." Though it's a movie I can see myself revisiting from time to time, maybe oncee a decade or so, basically 30 year old me and 18 year old me shared the same opinion. I'm just starting the last in Ellroy's "LA Quartet" that I 've never read: White Jazz. After that I'm thinking about picking up The Black Dahlia graphic novel that came out a few years back.

Nuts in May seemed very allegorical -- who makes the rules for living space, and whose rights are more worthy when they encroach. Even something like noise, which is a factor even out in the wilderness when people try to get away from everyone else.

Most of the second half of the movie seemed to be about Josh Hartnett banging everybody.

EDIT: Also, was anyone else deeply confused at the casting decision, because Hilary Swank looks nothing like Mia Kirshner; and the whole plot evolves around these two characters looking enough like each other to be considered "twins."

A Simple Plan (1998) (Dir. Sam Raimi) 4
https://i.imgur.com/le7MGIt.jpg

The opening shots of Hank in the mill bagging the grain are a romantic vision of the midwest that Raimi then spends two hours upending. These characters in this folksy rural town aren't just goodhearted people unto which Raimi can show the transformative power of greed. They're people trapped in the shadow of a myth that never was.

Hank and Jacob are brothers who fondly recall life on the farm with their father as a time of innocence. We come to find that Hank didn't realize his father's death was a probable suicide so his family could receive the insurance money nor did he realize the dire financial straights of the family were in part due to how they paid for his college education. Now the farm is in ruin, and the promise of Hank's education hasn't led him anywhere. The distinctly American dream, the wholesome farm life, the promise of opportunity through education, the simple contentment of the countryside, it's all gone sour.

When Hank first divulges the discovery of the money to his wife Sarah, he does so with a hypothetical. Sarah says it'd be wrong to steal it while adding they don't need the money anyway. When the cash is presented, she immediately becomes calculative and forgets any moral opposition. The immediate transformation is common among the culprits, but later in the movie, under great duress at Hank's insistence on burning the money, her assessment of their need for money changes.

Sarah paints a picture of their life as monotony, letdown, and financial anxiety. Hank's working a menial job waiting on his boss to die. Sarah works an unfulfilling job and they barely scrape by together. They can't afford to disrupt the tediousness of their lives. Even the rare celebration dinner is marred by the necessary thrift of their existence. She dreads how these circumstances will affect her newborn daughter right down to how the hand-me-down clothes will make her feel about her worth.

Earlier in the film, Jacob also alludes to what the money means to him. Not only does he dream of reclaiming the family farm, something that was promised to him and never delivered, he desperately wants to be in love. He tells a heart wrenching story about a girl pretending to date him, all for a bet of a $100. He admits he's never even kissed a girl. He's revealed to be a miserably lonely soul who will accept the veneer of love, one allowed by his newfound wealth, just to experience the illusion of affection.

Raimi takes a conventional story about greed and betrayal, retains the accountability of the character's for their evil deeds, but ultimately indicts the broader economic and cultural circumstances of America and its dreams. The film closes with haunting shots of the withering family farm standing alone on the icy landscape. It's a monument to a bygone era and a testament to a myth that never was.

This may be the most influential Kung Fu movie ever. I can't believe how many elements of this one have made it into some of the most popular Kung Fu movies ever made (Karate Kid, Kill Bill, Hero, the list goes on). Fairly standard story (now) of good school vs bad school settling the score at a martial arts tournament. Good story, great choreography it's the whole package when it comes to 70's martial arts movies.

Rewatch. A great, bad movie. Who cares about plot (there is one but it's pretty thin) when it comes to Dolemite. It may seem slow early on but stick with it and you'll be rewarded with one of the best rescue missions ever. If you enjoyed Black Dynamite I would recommend this to see where the inspiration came from. The last half hour of the movie - Dolemites ass kicking Kung Fu rescue - is a treasure. Post-apocalyptic drama from Haneke that unsurprisingly is depressing throughout. I really like Haneke but this isn't one of his strongest nor particularly thought-provoking, although Huppert was excellent. Unfortunately Beatrice Dalle didn't feature much but was great when she was in view.

What did you not like about it? Its in the vein of Weerasethakul's other movies and deals with death, spirituality and reincarnation. Albeit not his best movie, its not a movie which stands out in a bad way in his auteurship.

I liked it even more than you did - I think I posted my brief impressions in this thread somewhere. A difficult but very intriguing film.

It's the fun and positivity of the character in the face of horrible things. I mean I laughed when

she loses her bike at the beginning and says: "I never even got a chance to say goodbye"
and it just escalates from there :p.

Yeah, that oddly makes it pretty scary tho. She is always nice and trying to have fun with and willing to help anyone, even when she knows the situation is potentially dangerous. Then her very positive nature is what causes a lonely incel/red pill racist dude to obsess over her then believe she was just teasing and mocking him when those were never her intentions, that's a very real mindset we've seen in people like Elliott Rogers and the guy in Canada recently.

It's definitely fun too though and Sally Hawkins is so great and loveable while you can see how she annoys some people, meaning normal people not the dude i just described in the spoilers.

Art-style filmmaking can go two ways for me. Either that I'm fascinated with its ideas and presentation or that its themes feel so disconnected in its attempts to play out as bizzarrely as possible that I find myself asking "I'm sorry, but I have no idea what the hell you're trying to do here". A film doesn't have to make it itself completely clear as long as there's something about it visually that keeps me interested. For example, the first time I saw Begotten I had almost no idea what was happening whatsoever, but I still liked it because of its unique visual presentation and its surrealistic atmosphere. Watching Splendor it's like the director tried to make it as frustratingly self-indulgent as possible. Long-distance shots with a painfully slow zoom-in, weird and almost embarrassingly bad dialogue at times, a 5 minute uninterrupted shot of someone taking a dump, a long forest walk which plays out like a tourist guide short, and most of all barely even making use of the great concept of people fighting out wars in their dreams. Outside of a night time sequence, it didn't even keep my attention visually. So in the end, it just had nothing for me to offer. If there are some meaningful messages hidden in there somewhere, including the Pepsi scene (One of the biggest what the ****s my brain has ever uttered), then it went completely lost on me.

I thought this was really well acted for the most part, you could literally feel the tension in specific scenes. It drags on quite abit though and there wasn't really any need for the dull courtroom sections.

Nowhere in Africa (2001) 4.5

44179

German drama film based on a true story by Stefanie Zweig, depicting the lives of Jewish refugees starting a new life in Kenya. The Redlich family lead a comfortable middle-class life in 1930s Germany, where famiy father Walter works as a lawyer. However, rising antisemitism under Nazi rule pushes the astutely forward-looking family to decide to simply get out while there is still time, with a bare minimum of belongings and money. Their destination turns out to be a farm in Kenya, where they try to adjust to a completely different way of life in a foreign climate and culture. Here they discover, among other things, the true value of simple commodities like water. The ultimate irony comes with the distant rumbling of World War II in Europe, when they find themselves classified as 'enemy aliens' - as they come from Germany and speak German - to the ruling British colonists. A fascinating tale of determination and the will to start over again and succeed in the face of all their many trials and tribulations. Trilingual movie in German, Swahili and English.

10 Cloverfield Lane (2016) 3

44180

US 2010s horror drama. The movie began as, and was for the most part, a first-class isolation drama and chamber piece centred around three characters living in an underground bunker, built and furnished by the sinister owner Howard (superbly played byJohn Goodman). Suspense and tension build up nicely (sure, there is something clonking about out there, but this barely intrudes and is reduced to rumours of a nuclear/chemical attack). Towards the end of the film, this carefully prepared tension then wildly explodes into a sudden mad dash to evade an impromptu aliens-appearance, who abruptly enter stage in the final 10-ish minutes in the most disconnected manner imaginable. There's a final rush of action and a gratuitous and improbable escape scene that then reminded me in a flash where I had seen the lead actress before: Mary Elizabeth Winstead's character pulled a similar stunt in the recent The Thing prequel. We were even treated to a clichéd "resistance-groups-out-there-calling-up-yall-on-the-radio" scene with the corresponding signpost appearing out of nowhere and pointing out the right direction. Although I'm a huge SciFi-Horror fan, this final part jarred clumsily with the rest of the movie: you were left with a film with one body but a very different head, a weird hybrid that ultimately left a bad aftertaste. . The best part was Goodman's performance and the early claustrophobic atmosphere.

Three Colours: Red (1994) 5

44181

Final part of the tri-colour French-Polish movies. After Blue in France and White primarily in Poland, Kieslowski takes the trilogy to Romandy for Red for a first-class film experience that deserves all the many accolades it has received (Tarantino is said to have rated it even higher than his own winning Pulp Fiction at Cannes; though the Oscars that year only had eyes for Forrest Gump, nuff said.) Cat-walk & photo model Valentine (Irène Jacob) accidentally injures German shepherd dog Rita while driving home in Geneva and, tracing her owner, stumbles upon the lonely figure of ex-judge Joseph Kern (Jean-Louis Trintignant) who is secretly monitoring and eavesdropping on the telephone conversations of his neighbours. Valentine is initially shocked and angered, but thanks to Rita's visits to the vet and upcoming litter, the two characters' paths are drawn together allowing them to look closer at various facets, including contradictions, of human nature. There are other interesting interconnecting threads that make a grandiose movie and a perfect finale to the trilogy.

Average, unremarkable, no balls. Even though the story is different, it felt used up only a couple of years after Spotlight. It is well made and does a nice job at capturing the times. I just never cared. Hanks needs to reinvent himself and take some risks; same with Spielberg, and Streep was annoying. Those three have contributed so much to film that I expect much more. Saul from Breaking Bad was good.

Bizarre but really interesting documentary. Watched it with my wife who left it after about 20 minutes and honestly, at the time I couldn't blame her. A mother and daughter live in a filthy run-down mansion will not sound that appealing to watch but the characters are just so eccentric that it becomes almost entrancing. At times it was verging on disturbing and really depressing and despite how vile the property was, you felt sorry for them, especially the daughter who was obviously so lonely. The fact that the women were close enough relatives of Jackie Onassis only adds to how fascinating this is.

Avengers: Infinity War (2018)

Finally, the film that is the first part of the culmination of ten years of Marvel films, all of which I enjoyed, of course some more than others. But I put this one right at the top of the pile. The story gives you a halfway resolution to the story of the Infinity Stones, a subplot that has been running through all of the movies. Halfway I say, because naturally a story this big and with so many characters cannot be resolved in just one movie. This one clocks in at just one minute shy of two-and-a-half-hours. But the film flies by. It is a truly epic palette on which our superheroes paint their picture.

We have bad guy Thanos, who has been shown mainly in fleeting glimpses in several of the movies, starting with the original The Avengers (2012) (at the end of the movie in one of the now-famous after-credits scenes). But we know that he is one of the biggest bad guys our heroes have ever faced and the story tells us that if he gets all the gems he's hunting down to place with the "Infinity Gauntlet" on his hand, he will be able to wipe out a great portion of life in the universe with "a snap of his fingers." And the fight to stop him and his cronies is on from the first of the movie, with The Hulk, Heimdall, Loki, and Thor unable to stop him from their ship in space, and Iron Man, Doctor Strange, Bruce Banner (have to see the movie to see how he's on Earth all of sudden when he was in space minutes ago), Vision and Scarlett Witch failing to stop his cronies on Earth, at least at first. That's how relentless that even the first third of the movie is. The stakes are for real, and the movie makes you worry about our heroes.

The special effects have to be mentioned because they are flawless and never take you out of the movie with a misstep in execution. As for the film, there are so many great moments that it's hard to break them down into favorites but I'll give a shot at a few: Spider-Man swinging under a bridge, hanging low and skimming his feet across the water; Bruce Banner in his Tony-Stark-made Hulkbuster suit that is essentially a big, fat Iron Man suit made for the Hulk; Thor being rescued by The Guardians of the Galaxy and forming a friendship with Rocket Raccoon, of all characters, and constantly calling Rocket a rabbit. Strangely, Rocket, although wondering why he's being called that, doesn't get mad and is very chill with it ;the humor, which is mostly relegated to the first two-thirds of the movie and is fairly scattershot as this is a fairly dark chapter for the Marvel heroes. Like the previously mentioned Rocket being called a rabbit; Star-Lord being jealous, in a very amusing way, of his crew oohing-and-aahing over a unconscious Thor's super-masculine form; Peter Parker and his gee-whiz, semi-innocent remarks and pop culture callbacks to help him and his friends out; Tony Stark fumbling a bit in Doctor Strange's mansion and almost damaging a very important magic vessel of Strange's that's made to look like a giant urn and Strange's physical reaction to that; the gigantic final battle that takes place in Wakanda, Black Panther's home, and the almost sense-numbing non-stop fury of said battle.

The acting is fine, with pretty much every character getting their special moment, but for me, the movie is almost stolen by Josh Brolin as Thanos, who, to the writers' credit, is not just a one-note bad guy, but a being with a purpose, however misguided that purpose is. He's evil, but he doesn't think he is. One moment he'll seem almost reasonable, the next he's committing murder. But sometimes, it bothers him...sometimes. I was a bit bothered by the trailers and the look of Thanos' face--it seemed to be not too realistic in a way good CGI should be, to me, but on the big screen, Thanos looked completely realistic, and Brolin's features showed through the animation but not to where you felt cheated. Every change or flicker on Thanos' face was sold because of Brolin and he deserves the lion's share of credit for the character's success.

There are some deaths, which is righteous or otherwise we as an audience might not care or be invested. But...as some of the good guy or gals who don't make it have other movies already announced, you know they'll be back somehow in the next movie. There is only one after-credits scene and it comes at the very end of the movie, with bad things afoot and someone being called in to help. Won't say who, but I'm pretty sure I know. Anyway, terrific time at the cinema.

None of the adjectives used in the poster applied to this. I would call it boring. It is well filmed and acted but it's so slow and the plot is kind of eh. Post apocalyptic survival story about paranoia and a dude living alone when two women (mom and daughter) suddenly appear and essentially move in. There's a fair amount of gardening, sex, slurping up vegetable water and very little dialogue. Complications soon arise then it ends. The problem with this film is I never cared for any of the characters (except the cameo from the rabbit) so who cares if they live or die - ergo no suspense.

What a great, easy-to-watch film. It helps that Cleo is such a wonderful, loveable character, shown walking the streets of beautiful Paris. Honestly, I probably could've just watched her walking the streets for 90 minutes without anything else going on.

Great film.

Loved it! Great how they fitted it all in to a 1h and 30min movie. Could have been longer, cause I loved every second of that polite small town vibe turned bad. Would love to see more of the Lundegaard storyline as well, felt like they cut it short at the end. Don't know if that would've made it a better movie, but it would have satisfied my curiosity. Loved the Swede in this.

Bad, bad movie, but I loved it! Especially Caroline Munro and her enormous talent(s). Also, the great, cheap effects, like the spaceships that looked like they were built out of whatever was lying around in the poor director's backyard. And the Southern-talking robot. And once again, the main draw: Caroline Munro as Stella Star. Hey, Stella!

"Two brothers, scientists Scott and Tony Nelson, develop an amplifier which enables a person to enter a 4th dimensional state, allowing him to pass through any object. Scott experiments on himself and discovers that each time he passes through something he ages rapidly. He begins killing people, sucking out their life energies and regaining his youth as a result. It falls to Tony and Scott's girlfriend, Linda, to try to put a stop to his murderous rampage."

For the 40's countdown, I had to watch over 40 noirs. This movie is 1 of only 3 30's movies on that list, along with M and The Human Beast, and the only one I hadn't seen. Out of the 3, this is the one I enjoyed most. It starts off with a man stumbling down the stairs of an apartment building after being shot. The shooter holes himself up in his apartment as the police try to get to him. As the man ponders his fate, we are shown the events that led up to the present. A woman or two are involved. Directed by Marcel Carne of Children of Paradise fame, everything about the movie is quality.

I always associated Giant with James Dean and during first part of the movie I was wondering, what was so special in this guy, I didn't see. The second part of the film proved to me, that his fame isn't exaggerated. Big surprise was for me, eghh... hmmm..., Big - Rock Hudson, who's artistry I appreciated thanks to Giant. I love that movie, I wasn't overly impressed with Rock or Elizabeth but James Dean made the film, so did a lot of the supporting characters.

Grey Gardens (1975)

Bizarre but really interesting documentary. Watched it with my wife who left it after about 20 minutes and honestly, at the time I couldn't blame her. A mother and daughter live in a filthy run-down mansion will not sound that appealing to watch but the characters are just so eccentric that it becomes almost entrancing. At times it was verging on disturbing and really depressing and despite how vile the property was, you felt sorry for them, especially the daughter who was obviously so lonely. The fact that the women were close enough relatives of Jackie Onassis only adds to how fascinating this is.
I cant believe I'm rating it as high as this but rating_3_5+

I picked this to watch in preparation for the 30's countdown simply because it's on the top 100 westerns list. I took a quick pick at IMDb and saw it starred Jimmy Stewart and Marlene Dietrich and thought, that's great. Then I noticed it labeled as a comedy and western and thought, shlt. As it turns out, I wouldn't call it a comedy. I'd just call it a well balanced movie that includes natural humor and a wee bit of music. It's a corrupt town, and Stewart plays what would later become a cliched role as a lawmen who doesn't want to carry a gun and is taken lightly. It's not as dark as most westerns I like, but I thought it was a real good flick. The cast is great and it was a lot of fun.

I really liked the 2009 initial offering, and this one is more of the same. That both helps and hurts it in my opinion, where the 'that is practically impossible' or 'it would take a miracle' line is overused to the point where it's not even suspenseful anymore. Very stunning designs and environments, and the characters mix very well. I'm still not entirely sold on Chris Pine as an actor, and Benedict Cumberbatch seemed a little out of place with this kind of role. Good enough to make me look forward to streaming the next one.

I think they were too hampered by having to preserve the surprise of who the character was. I agree about Cumberbatch as well. He had a go but just couldn't make it work, and some of his acting falls completely flat, especially the 'big reveal'. What is interesting is how he puts across this twisted character, particularly through his facial expressions.

Spoilers

Fritz Lang directs Spencer Tracy as an innocent man who gets arrested for a serious crime while on a trip to visit his fiance. While sitting in jail waiting for the authorities to figure things out, a lynch mob attacks the jail. He is presumed dead, but in reality he's alive, super pissed, and wants revenge/justice. This was a pretty good movie with a story that suits my taste. I wasn't crazy about the last half hour's courtroom scenes or for the fact that the main character was willing to give up his girl and let her think he was dead. The dog who plays Toto in The Wizard of Oz has a small role.

Out Of Africa

https://i.imgur.com/8ZbZLbI.jpg

Not wanting to be left alone, Karen decides to marry Bror, but only for financial purposes. (This is not a secret, she straightup tells him right away) She establishes a plantation in Africa, but to her dismay her husband decides they should grow coffee. She eventually meets the happy-go-lucky hunter Denys, who she develops a complicated relationship with...

At first I couldn't get past Meryl Streep's accent. It was so offputting at first, to where I wondered "What the hell is she doing?". But once I got past that she turned out to deliver a very good and believable performance. I'm glad this movie avoided the cliché of making the husband a jerk to the point where it's no wonder she has an affair. He's not a very romantic type, but he's not cold. He's busy, but he doesn't do it out of spite. He's neglectful, but he doesn't treat her like dirt. Unfortunate circumstances just lead her to spending a lot of time at home with him away at war.
The settings have a personality of their own, giving a nice look at regular life in an African country, which shows people with their own little quirks. I'm glad they didn't exaggerate it as much as possible making it out to be the most difficult place to live on earth, because it's so clichéd at this point. This is not a movie about poverty. In fact, Karen even proves to provide some medical help to those who need it. Rather, it's about trying to make the best of what you've got, and someone who will make you happy and do anything to be with you. Unfortunately for Karen, she doesn't fully get her wish in either of her relationships. Her husband often goes off to war and rarely stays at home. She starts to develop some feelings for him, but they slowly die out as he doesn't help out with the farm and she contracts syphilis from him. Denys becomes the man she really starts to love, and they always tell funny or tragic stories to each other. But he's an adventurer. He always wants to be somewhere else. So even though she might sound selfish when she tries to prevent him from living out his own dreams, it's understandable. She always gets abandoned. When Denys then dies in a plane crash, she gives up on the farm and returns to Denmark. You're left wondering where destiny will take her, and if she ever will love again or rather stand alone in fear of being abandoned. Streep and Robert Redford have electric chemistry with each other. Their shared joy and passion is realistic and handled with just the right balance. They only have one serious argument in the entire film, and it's not emphasized by over-the-top yelling and arms flailing. They are rather just sad, frustrated over their own clashing ideals and contemplative. We see Redford moving his finger over the map in starts and stops, taking Karen's words in but not budging. The scene asks an important question about what an act of love really means. Is it really love to stop doing what you love in order to make your lover happy? Does love mean never putting away too much time to yourself?
Throughout the movie Streep narrates the events, which can prove a killer or a winner with some. While at times a bit sappy, Streep's narration proves to work very well. The closer where she reads up a letter provide the perfect bittersweet finish to a classic tale.

A little bit Oscar bait at times, but a relaxing naturally paced romantic drama. 4

I agree. It's a very absorbing movie, albeit with a shocker ending...

Lancaster was great at those types of roles. And I'm sure that the off-beat nature of the story appealed to him.

I loved The Swimmer too...Lancaster was brilliant and the ending was absolutely heartbreaking.

Pigs and Battleships (1961) (Dir. Shohei Imamura) 4
https://i.imgur.com/2Vj7yaM.png

An educated man behind a desk instructs his business partners to legitimize themselves as corporate types and donate a percentage of their income to charity before the camera cuts to the rag tag bunch of criminals with glazed eyes, mouths ajar, and hungry wallets. The camera pans from the street to a second story onlooker, then cuts to his perspective and again pans to the man at the doorway. A hookup turned assault gets shot from the ceiling and spins the room as the situation escalates. Gangster after gangster is carried out on stretchers broken up intermittently by stretchers carrying pigs with bullet wounds.

It's an effortlessly entertaining gangster film that not only exhibits Imamura's visual craft to great effect, but which also showcases his grasp on social issues and human instinct. It's a film about US imperialism and the military-industrial complex feeding into economic stressors in a Japanese port city surviving on pimping out their daughters. It's a movie about a doomed love between kids caught up in situations far bigger than themselves. Imamura's greatest achievement here is how he expertly shifts between tones and subjects, addressing the substance of his film on a human level that makes it easily digestible. Quite a feat.

Through a Glass Darkly (1961) (Dir. Ingmar Bergman) 5
https://i.imgur.com/T6ZajVJ.jpg

A lot of my favorite movies are about broken people. The female protagonists are always the ones allowed to come completely unhinged. I think the male directors often feel more comfortable entering that territory by shedding the masculine veneer they themselves struggle to pierce. These suffering women offer a betrayed vulnerability, a vision of chaos and hysteria their male counterparts are rarely meant for and rarer still allowed to approach. When they do their mania is almost always expressed through violence inflicted upon others which often obscures their pain. I tell myself that is why I so often gravitate towards these pictures. As with any Bergmanian conflict, things are never so easily resolved. As with any Bergmanian conflict, the guilt and shame are essential to the experience.

The ending is one of my favorites because it's so awful. My wife didn't enjoy it but liked it. She liked Cebe and said she would have been friends with her if she knew her.

Jailbreak (A-): Cambodian action film with fight scenes inspired from the Indonesian action film The Raid. Some blistering fights turn a simple story into an all-out war between a team of four cops against a horde of prisoners. The finale leaves room for a sequel and I hope it happens. It's on Netflix right now.

I saw this about 21 years ago and barely remembered it. As far as Hitchcock films go, only Rebecca and Dial M for Murder have equaled or exceeded my previous thoughts upon seeing them again. For this movie, I liked the story, the performances, and the main setting. I did not care for the comedic moments, and although I was interested, I was not thrilled. Add it all up and I'm left with the feeling that it's a good movie.

An odd one from Denmark. After their father passes away two brothers (one an intellectual the other a dim witted, chronic masturbator) play a video he left for them saying that he wasn't their biological father. Their real father is so-and-so. The brothers then go on a search for their biological dad, find him, their other (crazy) brothers and some rather unsettling things about their ancestry. The first 30 minutes or so were hilarious but it does take kind of a dark turn about halfway through. An unrecognizable Mads Mikkelson is fantastic as the dim witted brother.

My only complaint is with Netflix for a terrible sub titles that would miss dialogue or flash it so fast that I would miss most of it. And dialogue is EXTREMELY important with this one since a lot of the cat and mouse involves conversation.
But, believe me, it is WORTH struggling through the bad subtitles on Netflix or simply finding elsewhere.

Game Night

(John Francis Daley, Jonathan Goldstein)

https://i.imgur.com/k6U1ZwM.png

3.5

In college I wrote a feature length screenplay that was about a group of people who were invited to a Murder Mystery Dinner Party. The host is really killed, but the group thinks it's a part of the game and go on trying to "solve" the murder while each character drops dead. They eventually find out it is real and try to survive the night. That was back in 2009-2010.

I see a trailer for this film, Game Night. A group of friends who love having game nights, take it up a notch when Max's brother throws the board games away and invites them to play a 'real life game'. He is then kidnapped and taking hostage, threatened, shot at, and beaten. All while his friends and family think it's part of the game. They try to "solve" the kidnapping before it's too late, but soon discover it's real and try to survive the night.

At first I was disappointed that something very similar hit the big screen. I'm not saying my idea was completely original, but this one seemed very similar that it made me sad. On the other hand, I was happy that there was something inherently funny in that basic premise and Game Night manages to stay consistently funny throughout the run time.

Starring Rachel McAdams, Jason Bateman, Kyle Chandler. Jesse Plemons and Lamorne Morris, the cast work very well off each other, everybody having great chemistry and comedic timing. The shenanigans gets a little out of hand when they play football with a Faberge egg in a ruthless killers house, but I buckled up for the wild ride this film wanted to take me on. Bateman plays his usual self, again. McAdams proves again that she is a talented actress, but Plemmons steals the show as the awkward cop neighbour who used to be invited to these game nights because of his wife, whom he is now divorced from. One small subplot involving a character sleeping with a celebrity goes a little stale, but that's a small gripe.

Game Night is a lot of fun, does well with the premise and promises a good time.

Eraserhead - 5/10

I bought this movie when I was 18 after a girl with mutual tastes told me to check out David Lynch. I still don't like it.

Oddly enough, his next movie is a favorite of mine (The Elephant Man).

A middle-Eastern Western

Looks appealing. I haven't seen many Middle-Eastern movies, and I think that's probably the most undiscovered. It seems like the only category where there are no enthusiasts or experts.. Many like Kiarostami, but that's all I know. I've seen "Rana's Wedding" - which was pretty good. Lots of Iranian movies seem to have a movie within a movie, or liberal uses of narrative.. Some amazing Turkish movies, "Dry Summer" being my favorite.

Ecstasy (1933) Germany 2.5 Never, EVERY thought I'd dislike a film that featured Hedy Lamar. But, sadly, this did not work for me at all. It dragged horribly with terrible music and very flat acting. :(:(:(
And yeah, that's Hedy at around 18 or 19 when this came out.

Camille (1936) 4 Greta Garbo, Robert Taylor and Henry Daniel lead this tragic love story beautifully that I have not seen for decades. Garbo is always great for seeing a world weary lady who loves life with equal zeal.
One for all the romantics to see for the 30s Countdown.

It is a German Expressionist film with nudity. I put a link for youtube in the 30s countdown thread in case anyone else had better luck with it than I did.

Garbo's got quite a few film I really love. Always loved her side expressions that made you wonder more about what she wasn't saying.

Been very curious about that. Going to watch a Mae West film; She Done Him Wrong with Cary Grant as the hapless man in love with her. Haven't seen this one for ages either. Though my favorite was My Little Chickadee with WC Fields.

Finally got a chance to see this film, being a dad has now taken my movie watching time away from me. Nonetheless, I found a way...even if it is a little late to the party. I sit here, literally astounded by the success of this film. No one can sit here and tell me they expected this film to do as well as it did. Sure, people were expecting it to be a huge success, but the number one Marvel film? 3rd highest grossing film of all-time domestically? This beast beat out Titanic and not just by a slim margin either. It's going to be the third film to ever cross 700-million dollars. The other two being Avatar and The Force Awakens. Is it really that good of a film? Is it just that a certain community finally has a cool, kick-ass hero to get behind? Is it that they wanted to support this film no matter the quality? I think it's all of that and more.

Wakanda is a technologically advanced city like no one has ever seen before. Hidden from our world, we only see it as a sandals and spears village. T'Challa returns to Wakanda to claim the throne after his father's death in Civil War. He is challenged for the throne by an outsider who has mysterious ties to Wakanda itself. Will this outsider defeat T'Challa and claim the thrown? What nefarious plans does he have for the city and the world at large?

Black Panther is one smooth mofo. He is literally the James Bond of the MCU. His little sister is his own Q, making hi-tech gadgets to use on his spy missions. This spy mission dove tails into a unique car chase which sets most of the film in motion. Coogler manages to keep the action within frame and never loses the viewers spacial awareness. He does this again, marvellously when characters fight atop a waterfall, which are the highlights of this film for me. Those sequences are simple, effective and showcase some beautiful costumes. I appreciate the fact that my favourite scenes are two people fighting, no explosions, no chase, minimal cgi. It brings it all back to the story. Who are these two people fighting and why, what are the stakes? It feels real here, something that the climax is not able to replicate.

Black Panther falls into the generic third act that all marvel films seem to believe in. Massive fight scenes on an open field/large area where the CGI takes the front seat. It especially hurts Black Panther because I don't think the CGI is particularly that effective. I point to the scene where TWO Black Panthers are fighting one another and the scene just feels fake. I don't believe these two actors are there, nothing is tangible. It takes away from the drama. Get me back on that waterfall and I'm game.

As much as I thought Chadwick Boseman had charisma for this role, it's the supporting cast that shine bright here. Lupita Nyong'o as a possible love interest and Wakandan spy, Danai Gurira of Walking Dead fame, the most skilled fighter and Letitia Wright as the aforementioned sister, with brains and humour. These three ladies steal the show from Boseman in every scene and elevated this film for me. Yet the one real standout is obviously Michael B. Jordan as Killmonger. An MCU villain with real goals, real problems and relatable emotions. This film is not concerned about world domination, it's very self contained. The problems arise from black on black violence. I thought it was a good choice to not make the main villain white, it opens up the conversation a bit more as to what Coogler was trying to accomplish.

Black Panther is fun, fresh and falls right in line with how other MCU films work as a cog in a bigger wheel. Some missteps hurt the film, one I find to be a glaring issue involves Get Out's Kayuuya's motivations for who he is fighting for being incredibly weak and unearned. Some shoddy CGI sequences take you out of the experience, but as a whole, this film is a winner.

I've seen 2 movies last night so I'm just gonna rate them both

Iron Man 2 (2010) - 58/100
It was fine for one viewing but I don't see myself ever watching it again. It was significantly less intelligent than the first Iron Man and had characters that wouldn't feel out of place in a corny 2000s sitcom, but it redeemed itself with fun action and panache you'd expect from Iron Man.

Whiplash (2014) - 94/100
Here's a prime example of a movie with a soul. What I mean by that is you can really tell that the director was in love with his craft as well as his topic: the topic in question being jazz. The story of an ambitious jazz drummer trying to make it big is kinda simplistic, but it excels because of how it's presented. The dialogue is clever, the soundtrack is top-notch, and Terrence Fletcher (J.K. Simmons) is a riot in every scene he's in. There's also some sequences where the cinematography matches up to the music being played by the characters. It's impossible not to get a kick out of those.
