Shanghai Express - 1932

A very stylish and well made movie, with unusual and effective acting from the main cast. I thought the extended crossfade technique was a little over-used but was nevertheless a noteworthy and useful element. Overall very high technical quality though I found the script to be somewhat lacking.

Spaghetti western directed by Sergio Corbucci with a score by Ennio Morricone. It doesn't totally feel spaghetti, maybe because it stars Burt Reynolds. He at least passes for an American Indian more than Burt Lancaster did in 1954's Apache, and it's easy to see why he'd soon become one of the biggest movie stars in the world. There is an abundance of ruthless killing in this movie and I thought it was a good watch.

Marriage Story (Noah Baumbach, 2019) 2

Adam Driver is one of my favourite modern actors but this film's entire being seemed to rely on over-dramatic dialogue sequences, rather than through telling an interesting story cinematically as the first few minutes promisingly suggest it might (through a combination of editing, voice-over etc.). I'm not surprised to see that it's getting a lot of praised with very committed performances but this wasn't for me.

Loveless (Andrey Zvyagintsev, 2017) 3

A fairly straightforward story of a child gone missing, but through the way the director frames spaces and actors he is able to generate a great feeling of suspense whilst also sharing some of his thoughts on the modern human way of life.

Logan (James Mangold, 2017) 3.5

A "superhero" film that instead of aiming to conform to a larger canon, opts to tell a more singular story with its own life. Reminiscent in some ways of some of cinema's most classic hero/anti-hero stories, almost as a modern Western. Very enjoyable.

Burning Cane (Phillip Youmans, 2019) 3

Remarkable to believe that this has been made by a 19 years old filmmaker. Although far from perfect, the director creates images of great depth, painting a rich, considered slice of American life. Mature beyond his years, and hopefully the start of an exciting cinematic career.

A Serious Man (Coen Brothers, 2009) 3

The only Coen Brothers' film that I had not seen and very enjoyable in a lot of similar ways to their other works. An interesting exploration of life and its weird idiosyncrasies, what guides our choices and being, but not as non-stop enjoyable or gripping for me as some of their other stuff.

A Woman is a Woman (Jean-Luc Godard, 1961) 4.5

I watched this the night before Anna Karina passed away, which was quite a sad coincidence. She is absolutely wonderful as usual. This film was just so delightful for me, very playful, combining various cinematic elements to create a compelling story that had me smiling and laughing throughout. My brother, who also watched Breathless for the first time a few weeks ago, really enjoyed this too.

Velvet Buzzsaw (Dan Gilroy, 2019) 0.5

Absolute load of rubbish. Not scary, not funny, not interesting, but worst of all is that it seems like it is trying to be something, a ridiculous attempt at some type of satire that in the end just really really bored me. I almost fell asleep and just wanted it to end. Like some weird mix between Nocturnal Animals and Maps to the Stars but without any life at all to make it compelling.

The Guilty (Gustav Möller, 2018) 3

Like the very good Locke, this is a film set in one location focussing on one character that manages through dialogue (most of the talking takes place over the phone) to be compelling and suspenseful. Ultimately with such a film there are also limitations as to where the plot can go and some elements do seem slightly contrived, and some of the directorial choices (wide screen camera) seemed a little odd - but overall solid and interesting.

Wind River (Taylor Sheridan, 2017) 1

A plot full of clichés, every character and action just seemed like something I had seen before. With the environment that the film takes place in, you'd expect some type of suspense or great cinematic moments, but for me everything fell flat. Hold The Dark whilst flawed, was a much stronger film.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (J.J. Abrams, 2019) 3.5

Went into this with really low expectations as I saw some poor reviews and also hated Episode 8, but was pleasantly surprised. The plot is full of some ridiculous moments and coincidences but I was happy to accept most of them and go along with it, as Abrams recovered the heart of the story. Instead of focussing on weird characters or uninteresting subplots, the main characters are actually put back together and this manages to create some great emotional moments. The film flies by yet never feels disorientating with some superbly shot sequences.

A Most Violent Year (J.C. Chandor, 2014) 3

A very well constructed tale that largely hinges on a very good performance from Oscar Isaac. An interesting look at capitalism and the various roles that people play, as well as the different ethical and moral implications of the decisions we make. I liked this and really liked All Is Lost from Chandor, who manages to create compelling stories with limited elements.

A Simple Plan (Sam Raimi, 1998) 3.5

Raimi has a go at emulating his friends the Coen Brothers, and for me whilst the result isn't as memorably cinematic, the greatest success of this film is how through its plot it becomes a fascinating and moving character study. Billy Bob Thornton is particularly strong and affecting in his role.

The Curse of the Cat People (Robert Wise & Gunther von Fritsch, 1944) 3

Absolutely nothing like Cat People but still a decent film. More of a child's fantasy film, probably more similar to The Spirit of the Beehive than anything else I have seen. I enjoyed it but it lacked any really strong cinematic moments to be anything better than good for me.

Brief Encounter (David Lean, 1945) 4.5

My first time seeing this classic Romance and it smashed my expectations. Lean obviously famously went on to direct more epic sprawling works like Lawrence of Arabia but here is direction is different but still wonderful and really elevates the story. The camera moves softly, simply, with care, the editing stitches everything together with great balance that gives the film a dreamlike fluidity. The two main performances are dramatic but they work and make the story extremely powerful.

4.5

http://flickminute.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/Once-Upon-a-Time-in-Hollywood_2019-_Quentin-Tarantino_Brad-Pitt-Classic_FlickMinute-Review.jpg

It's weird because I think it could have been so much better yet I still loved it. Leo was great but I thought it was Pitt's movie. Him and his dog were totally badass. It doesn't have the brilliant dialogue of his other best movies. A lot of movie within a movie stuff, pretty cool especially with a western countdown upcoming here. Still, I would have liked a little less of that and more L.A. partying. Great soundtrack, not as quirky as his others. For me it's the combination of the Hollywood scene with the Manson cult, a good time with such a horribly ominous feel. The visual of a pregnant Sharon Tate while hearing Mick Jagger sing Out of Time blew my mind and my heart. Even the ending could have been better, and it was still friggin awesome. The ending made the movie for my wife. Ultimate fantasy.

Glad you enjoyed this so much, I thought you would to be honest. I've got it on Blu-ray now and watched it again the other day. Every time I watch it, whenever "Out of Time" hits I get goosebumps. Really really sad and powerful film that works so well for me because of what happened in real life. I watched it with my mum too and she is not always a huge fan of violence but absolutely loved it. I was a bit surprised just how much she enjoyed the whole thing :D

From the current westerns list, supposedly this is a biographical film and it sure felt very real. Richard Farnsworth is outstanding as a stagecoach robber who serves over 30 years in prison until his release in 1901. He happens to watch The Great Train Robbery soon after which gives him a new idea. He's known as the gentleman bandit and he tries to change his identity while living on the run. A very mature and strong film, a bit different from most other westerns. IMDb and Wiki both have it at 110 minutes long but it's only 85.

First the good: it's bad. Very, very bad. It's absolutely terrible. The bad: Can't think of anything. Lack of gore perhaps. A 19th century witch places a curse on her husband because he wants her to stop killing men by sleeping with them (she keeps a very dangerous snake hidden ...*cough* there) "You're married now, dammit! Stop killing dudes that way!" her husband in the white jeans tells her. The curse is that in 100 years his granddaughter will be killed. But wait? Isn't that also her granddaughter? What kind of bassackwards curse is that? Fast forward to hundred years later when a lady goes diving in the ocean, gets infected with the curse and comes back as the Lady Terminator and begins hunting down the granddaughter. Cars get blown up, Lady Terminator kills dudes by sleeping with them, then with an uzi and when really mad and almost dead by shooting laser death rays from her eyes. This film rips scenes right from Camerons Terminator and remakes them almost shot for shot except it's all done worse, obviously. Much, much worse. Lady Terminator is pretty remarkable. There is so much bad in this that it would take longer than the movies runtime to explain it all. Across the board, this is one of the worst movies I've ever seen. The entire cast and crew deserves a standing ovation. On a steep curve this is a 4 bad movie.

This is one of my favorite films of all time. It was done in Canada, and I believe it might have won the best forum film in the U.S. (not sure).

At the time that this came out there had never been anything like it. It was an absolutely mesmerizing performance by the late Richard Farnsworth. The photography was stunning, and the perfect music was provided by the great Irish band, The Chieftans, which completely enhanced the excitement and thematic authenticity. Perfect rating for me. If anyone hasn't seen it, they really must.

I had this on my watchlist for a long time and finally got to it for the upcoming westerns countdown. I'd call it a crime/drama/western concoction, but whatever you want to call it it's outstanding. Tommy Lee Jones and Barry Pepper lead a terrifically good cast. It's gripping from start to finish, and I also thought there was some good messaging to be taken from it.

The Shootist (1976)

John Wayne's swansong is a little wooden piece of melancholic heroism but I think that's befitting for the Duke. The nostalgic intro is quite bad but the actual film is very decent. I would have preferred a bit more downbeat approach to the story and while it's presumably tailormade for John Wayne it could have been better with an actor instead of a revered idol.

This is from acclaimed director George Cukor and on the current westerns list. I thought it was going to be a bit goofy for my taste but I ended up liking it plenty. It's about a traveling theater troupe but it never gets silly and there are dramatic moments. I always find Anthony Quinn compelling to watch and I could feast on Sophia Loren all day. The Current War (2019)

This is another film that comes to us 2 years late. It was originally to be released in 2017, but having been a Weinstein Company production it was pulled following the accusations against Weinstein.

We evidently see the "Director's cut". Originally directed by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon on a book and screenplay by Michael Mitnick, prior to its new release Martin Sorcese --having had final cut approval as executive producer-- insisted on some cuts and some re-shooting. This supposedly lead to improvement and clarification. If so, it's tough to imagine how the original could have held most people's attention.

Even so, the film is a bit of a mess. One would think the casting of Benedict Cumberbatch (Edison) and Michael Shannon (G. Westinghouse) would add some heft to the film. Nevertheless the picture, as a biographical drama concerning the war between the two in the 1890s to see who could win the rights to provide the best electrical current to mankind, was confusing and somewhat plodding.

The script was the problem. But to be fair the very complex story of inventions, patents, and lawsuits is tough to bring to the screen with any clarity. Is there natural drama there? Yes, but it's a bit of a tempest in a teapot. It helps if the viewer is familiar with the struggle for dominance in electricity during the late 19th Century. Otherwise characters come in and out, and are never established to aid in understanding of the complicated drama.

Cumberbatch as Edison emerges as the best portrayal and most interesting performance. Shannon provided a competent effort. But his tendency to lapse into his patented strange demeanor didn't quite jibe with the real George Westinghouse. Most of the rest of the cast was first rate, including Nicholas Hoult as N. Tesla, and Tom Holland as Samuel Insull. Mathew Macfadyen was miscast in the J.P. Morgan role (Morgan was actually very assertive and aggressive).

The movie is worth seeing for the acting, excellent photography, period settings and costuming, and for historical purposes. But it misses the mark as a fine film.

Spider-Man!

As a kid I remember always hearing about which comic book company was the best. Many of my friends were in the DC comic camp. Batman, Superman, Flash, Green Lantern and of course the classic Saturday morning cartoon, Justice League of America (1973-1986), were the strengths of their argument. My favorite superhero was Spider-Man, who was and still is one of Marvel comics most popular super heroes….so that put me in the less crowded camp of Marvel. As an adult the same argument seems to be still being asked…only now it is which comic company is bringing the best superhero movies to the big screen.

This was not as laugh out loud funny as I expected, but it was still very entertaining. What really surprised me was that it turned out to be a movie with a warm story and characters. The whole cast was very good, and I think Eddie Murphy should get a shot at some more serious roles.

I loved it!

I've seen a bunch of great movies this month. This movie has obvious comparisons to American History X, and I figured that going in. What I didn't figure on was that this would be in the same class as AHX, but surprisingly it was. It was tense and moving and is based on a fairly recent true story.

The first half was much better than the second half. The second half was so bad that it felt like it was among the worst big budget movies I ever watched, reminded me of crappiest Hollywood products like Batman and Robin, Catwomen, and The Scorpion King. Still the special effects were very good.

Rating: 7.5/10 first half, 3/10 second half, 5.25 on average.

American History X has an identical story line, but this one is a real story like you said, I remember reading the article a long time ago, and seeing the tattoos on their face, you normally don't see skinheads with this type of determination, they're determined about the cause because they're mad with themselves. This had the vibe of Romper Stomper with Russell Crowe, a film I dislike. If you like this kind of movies be sure not to miss The Believer with Ryan Gosling, it's the best, very psychological movie, very interesting, I saw it a long time ago, I never though two religious, political extremism's could strongly live in the same person, the self-hating-jew, it's also one of the best or best performance Ryan Gosling ever made.

Blimey! What a mess! Great cast (Savalas Cardinale, Niven) and a decent storyline but the 1st 1/2 of the film tries to be serious and comedic and it's woeful..... Elliot Gould and Sonny Bono the worst offenders, like 60's hippies but during the 2nd World War. Roger Moore is also funny but for different reasons. In the 2nd half get's down to business and is far better as an action movie.

Most bizarre cameo I've seen was William Holden on-screen for 5 seconds ...apparently travelled to the set to see his "squeeze* Stephanie Powers!

The Two Popes (2019)

Starring two heavyweight venerable actors, Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce, this is an absorbing character study-- a biographical drama of the relationship between a pope who retired (real life Benedict XVI) and his successor (Cardinal Joge Mario Bergoglio) who became Pope Francis).

Briefly, the Cardinal wants to retire due to personal convictions, but the Pope refuses his request, and will not entertain the Cardinal's reasoning. Later we find that the Pope is looking to give up the Papacy, and he has earmarked the Cardinal to succeed him.

As historical accuracy the main events were true. Naturally the conversations and some other elements were fictionalized. But in the main it follows the actual historical record.

It is the perfect acting and interactions between the two which gives the highest quality to this film. The natural portrayals, the understated expression, and the humor draw in the viewer to where one forgets that it's a movie. The two hour running time goes by very quickly.

These performances will undoubtedly be studied in acting classes now and in the future.

Doc's rating: 9/10

La Terrazza - 9/10
Wow. Ettore Scola is so underrated. Very original movie, excellent writing, themes, acting, exposition, narrative. This movie is a great critique of society. It's very original, and focuses in on a handful of men who are aging, and finding no happiness with the material world. Very good satire showing the phoniness with the younger generation, who are more interested in correcting brand names than the subject at hand itself. But it also shows the hypocrisy of one in particular, who produces garbage to make money, please the critics, and to please his much younger wife, who doesn't love him, because everyone ages, and eventually life beats a man, while she is not at the same stage in life.

While I was watching this, I noticed the movie was made in 1980, and it described the future decade. Then thought back to 1970, and thought of "Husbands" by Cassavetes. Again, about aging, but this time dealing with it with hedonism. 1960 - "La Dolce Vita" which also has Marcello Mastroianni, who is also very good in this movie. I realized 2020 is a few hours away. I guess I also love this movie because it confronts my dissatisfaction with life and society, and my yearning for the only nutrition I can get - the arts, and specifically - movies, music, and comedy. It's nice to hear a bit of the "Does anyone feel the way I do?". It's not about looking at a glass half-empty or half-full, but trying to point out to the world that the glass is full of piss and to stop drinking it, and revert to what worked, regardless if its called "traditional".

Please reply if you have seen this. I'd be very interested to read what you thik about this movie.

I watched this western because of it's very cool cast; Charles Bronson, Toshirō Mifune, Alain Delon, and Ursula Andress. If you're looking for a serious western, then keep looking. On my watchlist for a while, and I finally got to it as it's eligible for the westerns countdown. It wasn't much of a western to me, but I thought it was greatly affecting. There's a lot of real life drama and tragedy around this movie which has some haunting omens. Marilyn Monroe's marriage to Arthur Miller, who wrote the screenplay, was coming apart and so was she. Of course she passed in 1962. Clark Gable wouldn't even make it to the premiere and Montgomery Clift only made it 5 more years. Director John Huston was boozing heavily. Also starring Eli Wallach and Thelma Ritter.

What I found interesting was nobody cared that 2 Welshmen played, respectively, a German & an Argentinian pope. Yet when Cynthia Erivo played Harriet Tubman huge flapdoodle because Cynthia is British & not a descendant of African-American slaves. Strange this.

Didn't live up to the hype or my own expectations after The VVitch but still quite enjoyable watch. Visually it's gorgeous and sound is great as well but I think it's a little bloated (i.e. too long for what it is). I also didn't like how it tipped towards comedy at times almost like it didn't take itself seriously. So yeah, fine but could quite easily have been better.

This is my second viewing, and overall my feelings toward this film haven't changed - still not a fan, and I still find it overrated (IMO). Don't get me wrong, it's an interesting movie, and it has its moments, but there's just something about Kelly's storytelling/directing style that doesn't quite work for me. He's using a whole bunch of cinematic techniques but they don't quite add up to create a strong cohesive whole, if that makes any sense.

Again, not bad - just not that good either.

The Mercenary (2020)

From Jesse V. Johnson, the director of last year's Avengement and Triple Threat comes this film about a former mercenary left for dead and nursed back to health by a priest. Deciding to start his life over, he decides to join the congregation. However, the past comes back to catch up with him when his former unit threatens the small village he is residing in. He becomes a one-man army against his former team. The titular role, played by former French Foreign Legion soldier turned actor and stuntman Dominiquie Vandenberg, is a man who doesn't talk much but rather lets his action do all the talking. An expert martial artist, we get to Vandenberg throw some amazing spin kicks and perform some amazing knife fights that will remind you of Martin Scorsese's Gangs of New York with good reason...Vandenberg was the fight choreographer on that film! Lots of action, brutality, and a fun villain role for Louis Mandylor.

Agent Jade Black (2020)

This indie action piece does make the most of its budget and is a fun ride. However, it does have a few flaws. The story of a brash, young, covert agent who must stop a virus that's killing rich men involved in human trafficking may seem somewhat of a double edged sword. However, when the culprit turns out to be a rogue agent, it does adds some pretty decent twists and turns. Lead star Katie Burgess makes the most of her role, even given the daunting task of fighting a goon while wearing high heels. With proper training and determination, Burgess could have that potential to be an action star in the making.

This seemed so much bigger on scale than most modern war films, with lots of men on screen fighting, chaos and destruction, supremely well done, I think it was a restored copy on telly, beautiful picture so easy on the eyes.

The Muppet Christmas Carol

favourite christmas movie. I love that Michael Caine said he played this role with the same gravitas that he would play a shakespearen play, you can see it.

I think cults are very interesting but the subject usually doesn't mean a good film. I loved the first hour of this but then it leveled off considerably. An hour and a half instead of 2 hours and 20 minutes probably would have been much better. I heard it being called a mind blower but I thought it ended up very generic. Good looking movie.

Napping Princess (2017) - Rewatch on Blu-ray rating_4_5
It had been some time since I'd seen this one and I gotta say it's still a blast. This is such a downright fun film that I honestly don't get what some folks are seeing when they badmouth it so much. Especially jarring is the claim that Napping Princess is boring since perhaps the greatest weapon in the film's arsenal is sheer entertainment value, which is only bolstered by the stunning animation, solid storytelling, likable characters, excellent voice acting, and Yoko Shimomura's musical score. Interestingly enough considering that the film opens three days before the 2020 Olympics, and how much of the plot involves a motorcycle with some pretty special technology, is that Kenji Kamiyama who wrote and directed the film was a key animator on Akira, a film well-known for predicting that Japan would host the 2020 Olympics―guess working on a film like Akira must have had a pretty big impact on Kamiyama, huh? The second time around, it was also pretty fun picking up all the clues that lead to the surprise twist in the latter half. My thoughts on the dub haven't changed much, either. It doesn't surprise me that Michael Sinterniklaas and Stephanie Sheh, who have directed excellent English dubs for Your Name, A Silent Voice, Mirai, and Okko's Inn, also directed this dub since it is without a doubt up to par with what a great dub should be. I still think Brina Palencia's performance as Kokone Morikawa, who often dozes off, entering a dreamworld as a young princess named Ancien who is especially talented in technological magic, and also finds that these flights of fancy, based on a story her father told when she was a child, may hold some answers about the real world and her father's abduction, is some of her best work, perhaps only topped by her turn as Natsuki Shinohara in Summer Wars―I still say she gets to do more, at least personality-wise, in either than she did as Rei Ayanami in the Rebuild of Evangelion, though as I've mentioned before, it's simply how Rei was written as someone who doesn't show emotion much at all. Also, having seen Summer Wars a few times fairly recently, it became pretty clear that Palencia actually uses the same voice she used for Natsuki, which is pretty cool since it fits this character perfectly. Chris Niosi is equally impressive as her childhood friend Morio, the genius who is on break from a Tokyo university and sets out with Kokone to solve the mystery. Doug Erholtz is rock-solid as Momotaro "Momo" Morikawa, Kokone's father who appears in the fairy tale he told Kokone as a pirate named Peach, and gets abducted by the villains for supposedly "stealing" technology. Lex Woutas is appropriately sinister and "Eeeevil!" as Ichiro Watanabe, who appears as Bewan in the dreamworld, who is the mastermind behind the scheme to abduct Momo and wants to steal Kokone's grandfather's company. Speaking of which, Paul St. Peter, who I must confess I thought was Gendo Ikari himself John Swasey the first time I saw the film, is also excellent as Isshin Shijima, Kokone's grandfather and Momo's father-in-law who is the CEO of Shijima Motors completely unawares of Watanabe's abominable plans, appearing in Momo's story as the king, making the most of the character's limited screen time. Everyone else also does solid work here and the dub script is completely natural. All in all, it was a whole lot of fun rewatching Napping Princess, and doing so right after Akira kicked off 2020 on a high note. Later, guys. Here's to surviving another year together on this forum.

The Boxer 4.5

Just listen to this quote from asiancult.com.

"Shuji Terayama was a poet, playwright, novelist, filmmaker, and boxing buff. He even wrote commentary for the sport in his spare time. Shuji once said: 'Boxing and horse racing taught me more about life than school.' In Japan - and in International art circles - Mr Terayama is treated like a god. A museum dedicated solely to Shuji Terayama is established in Misawa Japan, located in Aomori Prefecture. Unfortunately his work is largely ignored in the United States, probably due to its quirky sexuality. This film is his closest to a mainstream project. But be aware, it's still a Terayama movie. So expect the unconventional."

Good story from an amalgam of Edgar Allan Poe short stories. Big Vincent mugging to great effect as usual. As this was made in 1964 somehow it even feels "aged" for that era of film making. It's not so much a chiller but a nasty wee story about the human condition. Nic Roeg did the cinematography and, while it's mostly set in Prince Prospero's Castle, it makes the scenes extra punchy. Interesting movie.

4.5

Aside from the ending, which was a bit of a letdown, everything about this film was top notch. The mounting atmosphere of paranoia and the slow piece-by-piece unraveling of the conspiracy were really well done. Excellent direction by Pakula, electrifying chemistry between Redford and Hoffman (what a duo!), the phenomenal Jason Robards as Ben Bradlee ... the list could go on.

Whisper of the Heart (1995) - Rewatch on Blu-ray rating_5
It's such a shame Yoshifumi Kondo didn't get a chance to direct more films. At only 48 years old, we lost him way too soon. With that said, at least we got this one. Kondo's first and only foray into directing, which is also notable for being the first Ghibli film not directed by Hayao Miyazaki or Isao Takahata, excels on every level. Of course, a screenplay by Miyazaki himself, based on Aoi Hiiragi's manga from back in the '80s, only helps things. Miyazaki's masterful understanding of the human condition shines through at every turn. He perfectly captures the mind of a 14-year-old here, fleshing out the young cast of characters like nobody's business. I remember so very clearly when I was that age and most everyone was, to borrow a quote from the film, "Stupid jerk!" in my mind. The animation is also amazing——hard to believe it's turning 25 later this year, huh? And there's the music. It's pretty much impossible to talk about Whisper of the Heart without mentioning the music. Yuji Nomi's musical score is excellent. And how many anime open with the Olivia Newton-John version of Take Me Home, Country Roads? Disney's English dub is also excellent, rounding up a cast of live-action stars as they always did when they owned the rights to most of Ghibli's library. Brittany Snow is excellent as Shizuku Tsukishima, a 14-year-old who is constantly reading books——sounds like me at that age when I wasn't being as cocky as Shotaro Kaneda and Asuka Langley——who finds that someone named Seiji Amasawa has previously checked out all the books she has and ultimately ends up in search of herself. David Gallagher, who many will remember for 7th Heaven, is equally impressive as Seiji who turns out to be an aspiring violin maker. The late great Harold Gould is marvelous as Mr. Nishi, Seiji's grandfather who gives Shizuku many words of wisdom throughout his appearances. Courtney Thorne-Smith is appropriately nagging as Shiho, Shizuku's older sister who is always on her case. Shooo... I know what it's like to have an aggravating older sister (who I've actually called my little sister for as long as I can remember) all too well, though mine can be very immature and dense (What kind of dummkopf smokes cigarettes with a tumor on their pituitary gland and keeps begging people for cigarettes when soliciting is a crime punishable by jail time?) to the point that I can't even watch a movie in peace when she's around——the only reason I could this time is that we had to have her admitted——and when I was Shizuku's age, my sister and I often fought about her complete abandonment of hygiene. Apparently, Thorne-Smith gets it, too, since she based her portrayal of the character on her own older sister. Jean Smart is also great as Asako, Shizuku and Shiho's mother, fulfilling a longtime dream of dubbing an anime. James Sikking is also very good as Seiya, Shizuku and Shiho's father who is Asako's husband. It's funny watching the scene where he briefly smokes a cigarette in 2020 and knowing the film would never get a G rating in today's world for that scene alone since smoking automatically nets a PG rating nowadays. Snow's real-life best friend Ashley Tisdale is also solid as Shizuku's best friend Yuko. There's also the ever-reliable Cary Elwes (though even he couldn't save the dreck that was Saw) as the Baron, an anthropomorphic cat who appears in a few brief scenes and the dub script is completely natural. Everything together makes Whisper of the Heart an emotionally rewarding experience for the ages and I've only come to appreciate it even more with repeated viewings. Later, guys.

Bliss (2019)

I guess the best way to describe Bliss is a tribute to Abel Ferrara's The Addiction with drug-induced imagery of Mandy or Requiem for a Dream. Dezzy is a painter searching for a way out of her creative block. Booze, sex, and drugs soon escalate to blood and violence. A short and quite intensive film with a nice soundtrack. The lead actress is pretty good too.

Dragon Ball Super: Broly (2018) - First Time on Blu-ray rating_4_5
Let's make one thing clear right off the bat: I grew up with Dragon Ball, one of the most popular anime and manga franchises of all time, so I'd been excited about this movie ever since it made its way Stateside. I just wasn't able to get a copy until fairly recently. I finally got a chance to watch this bastard and let me be clear: Broly delivers. The story is right to the point, showing some exposition on Broly, Goku's father sending him to Earth, and what happens to Planet Vegeta shortly after before getting right to the main storyline where much of it is wall to wall action. The animation is stunning, as you'd expect from Dragon Ball, especially its latest incarnation at that. Norihito Sumitomo's musical score is pretty incredible, too. Funimation also provides one of the latest in a long line of excellent English dubs. Sean Schemmel is excellent as Goku, originally named Kakarot, the laid-back martial artist who came to Earth as a baby and has a battle power of "Over 9,000!" Chris Sabat is equally impressive as Vegeta, a more uptight martial artist who was once the prince of Planet Vegeta whose father was a ruthless king also named Vegeta. I must confess that the interactions between these two often leave this Dragon Ball fan watching with a dopey grin. Tamaki Suoh (and Folken and Kurz Weber) himself Vic Mignogna is also rock-solid as the Broly of the title who grew up on Vampa, a wild planet populated with giant insects and giant dragon-like creatures after being exiled there by King Vegeta. Here, we see how Broly is manipulated by his father Paragus and later Frieza. It's a shame this will probably be the last time we get to hear Mignogna voice Broly because of all the controversy surrounding him——Funimation mercilessly ripped all extras featuring Mignogna from the disc before release, but at least he got to dub this one and he has a good replacement in Johnny Yong Bosch. Chris Ayres is the perfect mixture of sniveling and "Eeeevil!" as Frieza, a manipulative little bastard straight from the pits of Hell who wants Goku and Vegeta dead, is responsible for Planet Vegeta's destruction, and is arguably the most iconic villain in Dragon Ball lore. Vegeta hilariously calls Goku an idiot, even throwing a "dumbass" in there, for resurrecting this bastard in one scene. Monica Rial is ever-solid, as always, as Bulma——though I can't help wondering why Funimation didn't give Wendee Lee another shot at the title, Vegeta's wife and Goku's lifelong friend, even in the character's limited screentime. Erica Lindbeck is better here as Cheelai who quickly takes a liking to Broly than she was as Dr. Ritsuko Akagi in the Netflix dub of Neon Genesis Evangelion. So is everyone else and the dub script is completely natural. All told, Broly is a frickin' blast and any fan of Dragon Ball should see it for sure. Later, guys.

Ford Vs Ferrari (2019) - 7.5/10. Thoroughly enjoyable, thrill ride. Bale again shows his class here. Only thing missing was James May narrating from the background. If it wasn't for him doing the story in the Grand Tour or Top Gear, I would have enjoyed it even more I guess. But a Ferrari is still a Ferrari! Also misses the fact Ferrari's British driver was replaced at the last moment, who was miles better. The word was it was political, like Italian for an Italian car or something on those lines. Can't remember the exact fact! AND:

The Handmaiden (Park Chan-wook, 2016) 4

Extremely immersive film dripping with style that pulls you into its story of twists and turns. Once again Chan-wook matches style and content to deliver an exciting, suspenseful story. Tempted to knock it down half a rating for some of the quite frankly ridiculous sex scenes that are way too over gratuitous and borderline parody.

Goodbye to Language (Jean-Luc Godard, 2014) 4.5

This won't be for everyone, but like The Image Book which was one of my favourite films of 2018, I absolutely loved this and found it fascinating. I feel like I just repeat a lot of what I say when talking about Godard, but whether its a narrative film or a more reflective essay film like this, his playfulness with images, sounds, text, performance etc. always keep me immensely entertained. For a film that's quite radical and unordinary in its narrative, its quite clear, well to a degree, through Godard's recent output, what he's trying to say. A commentary on cinema and language, our failure to communicate as humans and our destructive nature, the failure to use the medium for the benefit of humanity. Godard to me has a very bleak pessimistic worldview and I think on certain issues this is something I relate heavily to.

Judge Preist (John Ford, 1934) 3

Up until the final act, where we see the combination of Ford's normal striking imagery and editing to deliver powerfully moving storytelling, this is a very very "light" film missing some of the usual ingredients that make Ford's films so rich. Nonetheless it was still mildly entertaining with a good performance from Will Rogers. Ford would later expand on a lot of the character's and themes for one of his best films for me, The Sun Shines Bright.

Le Petit Soldat (Jean-Luc Godard, 1963) 3.5

Almost a remake of Breathless but this time introducing a lot of political themes, with commentary on the France-Algeria war. Another thing I love about Godard is his penchant for humorous dialogue, a lot of it observational or philosophical. The characters in this film are very interesting and watchable, presenting a complex insight into the lives of ordinary people caught in conflicts bigger than themselves.

Infernal Affairs (Andrew Lau & Alan Mak, 2002) 3

I've seen and like The Departed so I have always been interested in this film... and it's basically the same film minus the first hour and the romantic subplot. Probably one of the fastest pace films I have ever seen, just non-stop, chucks you right in the middle of things and the pace never lets up. The frenzied style works at times and there are some really nice sequences that make the film entertaining.

Green Book (Peter Farrelly, 2018) 3

Didn't have massive expectations for this and whilst I agree with some of the assessments that its portrayal of race relations is overly simplistic and the plot has a lot of cheesy/cliche moments, overall I enjoyed the film and had a good time. The two main performances are great and they have strong chemistry, it's a very funny road movie with lots of humour that kept me entertained. I think if it didn't win Best Picture then people wouldn't be so bothered about it, I think it's meant to be an enjoyable road movie and it worked on that level for me.

Ford v Ferrari (James Mangold, 2019) 2

James Mangold is a competent storyteller as evident by both 3:10 to Yuma and Logan which I recently enjoyed, and whilst there are some nicely directed sequences (mainly the race scenes) here, the screenplay is really, really poor. The first two acts basically tell the same story with a little bit of variation, every scene with Ken's wife and son is awful for me and the emotional subplots don't work, I also laughed at how they attempted to depict Ken Miles as British with these small cliches. Too many cringey scenes, like the fighting one... you can tell this was written by three people other than the director.

Joker (Todd Phillips, 2019) 1

I didn't think I would enjoy this but it was more disappointing than I thought, and the biggest frustration is that I was watching it thinking that the film could have been good. Everything about it was over done, oversaturated colours, non-existent mise-en-scene, an annoying overacting performance. I thought the film was going to show a descent into evil behaviour, or make us sympathise with the Joker (seeing as most who love this film seem to praise it as a portrayal of isolated individuals or people struggling with mental health) but it did not do either of those things for me. He was crazy and unsympathetic from the start, the violent scenes seem to want make statements but I'm not sure what. It seemed like it was trying so hard to be something, but in the end was nothing. When I was watching this in my head I just kept thinking about the film M and what a masterpiece of cinema that is, and how I should rewatch it again.

Jojo Rabbit (Taika Waititi, 2019) 1

I had two major issues with this, a film that was a real struggle to get through for me. The first is one that's being talked about quite a lot and that's the film's depiction of the Nazis. Okay I get that it's meant to be a satire, but it just made me feel uneasy, maybe this didn't work because of the second issue (that the film is not funny) but seeing Waikiti prancing around as Hitler just annoyed me beyond belief. Again this film seemed like it wanted to say so much, and make a defiant statement against Nazism, but its execution was extremely lacking, simplistic and didn't really do anything interesting or radical in the presentation of its ideas. It forgoes most of the horrors and its anti-hate message could fit on a pin top. But yeah, the second issue for me was the humour. I didn't laugh at all in the film, its sense of humour really really isn't for me. As soon as I saw Rebel Wilson in the opening credits I knew the film's humour wasn't going to be for me. Some credit should go to the young actors who put on really good performances, especially the lead.

Oh man!... this movie hit me so hard when I first saw it, I was 14 years-old and I was in the middle of one of those existential crises. Now, years later without having seen it again, I'm 24 years-old, the age Christopher McCandless had when he died in the "magic bus" and I think so much differently, something I didn't though I would possibly be able to do. This is one of those I don't want to watch often, afraid it might lose it's magic. Amazing film.

An insult to the original. A really mediocre, by the numbers, movie that fails to bring anything interesting to the table. ;) 4.5/10

Can't say I was ever particularly enamoured with the original, but what was most disappointing is how much of a missed opportunity this was. The first act was pretty solid, however it lost it completely from there.

How much better would it have been had it tied more in with the realms of Burton's Big Fish... I mean what better tie in could there be as a tall tale than a yarn about a flying elephant?

Instead it was delivered very much by the numbers with only the faintest hint of it being subversive to Disney, which left it all very unsatisfying and a whole lot of 'meh'.

Blind watch from the current westerns list that turned out to have a good cast. Joseph Cotten was wasted and almost unrecognizable but Dorothy Malone was hot as always. Kirk Douglas and Rock Hudson did what they do. I thought it felt a bit melodramatic for a western and sure enough there was an unusual turn towards the end. It was pretty good.

Movie adaptation on the Truman Capote book on the 2 men who perpetrated the murder of the Clutter family. Good, strong performances with a case (subtly put) against the eventual demise of the criminals by the rope. It's pretty downbeat but that suits the subject matter perfectly.

Joker (2019)

If one considers Joker to be a superhero or supervillian comic book type film, then it has a wider brush of plausibility it can use, rather than if it is saddled with the confines of a potential true to life story. However, despite its title, Joker is not comic book material, but an R-rated psychological thriller. The story grabs one’s attention right out of the chute, but by the third act (about the point that the clown masks appear), it has gone off the rails. From that point on, there is not a shred of plausibility, even to the level of a comic book; and it brushes right up against triteness.

To be sure Joaquin Phoenix’s portrayal of the title character was first rate, memorable, and certain to be Oscar nominated, although to my taste a greater performance was his Freddie Quell in The Master. Phoenix has a natural affinity for, and an ability to portray weird, threatening, or stoner/druggy type characters. His role in You Were Never Really Here was in many ways similar to his Joker role. Arthur Fleck was right squarely in Phoenix’s wheelhouse-- a perfectly thrown pass which he ran with to a touchdown.

Hildur Guonadottir’s music score was sneaky-good, and perfectly captured the mood of the action. But it was the phenomenal cinematography by Lawrence Sher that really aced the film’s tone and era. Liberty was taken with the story’s time period, which should be in the 1930s/40s, but of course there was no television then, nor would the settings be nearly as undemanding to portray as were the early 1980s.

One wonders who besides Warner Bros./D.C. needed another Joker portrayal. The character has been well featured many times since the 1940s. Will the figure become part of one’s necessary repertoire? “Have you done Hamlet? Macbeth?" "No, but I’ve done the Joker.”

So it was the screenplay itself which capsized the film. The schizophrenic, likely hebephrenic, Arthur Fleck was pushed too far beyond what would be capable of the character introduced in the film’s first half. The uber violent scenes were unnecessary, and likely inserted simply to satisfy the blood, gore and sadism seemingly required by today’s younger audiences. And what was the story’s message? That poor, disenfranchised and envious folks should dispatch with anyone who has made it in society; sort of like Antifa on steroids? Storm the Bastille. Off with their heads. Comparisons were made between Fleck and Travis Bickle of Taxi Driver. Bickle was an oddball, but he had a moral code. And his sense of right and wrong forced him to rescue a girl forced into prostitution, which culminated in a happy ending.

There must have been a lot of indecision and argument about Joker’s ending, because it felt like it was ending 3 or 4 times. The final selection seems to be wide open for a sequel, although Phoenix has stated that he would not entertain another. Still, if a big enough pile of millions were stacked in front of him…

Boring and bland horror where the most interesting thing is to try figure whether CM Punk looks more like Bruce Campbell or Ted Raimi (still can't say for sure, he's like a hybrid of them). Production values and acting are fine but the script is awful. And since when has the attic been called a third floor?

You make some good points, Daniel. I think Warners/D.C., Todd Phillips, et all, hit all the right buttons for a big commercial success. J. Phoenix alone, the nature of the story, along with the superb previews, teasers and publicity almost guaranteed the film a robust return.

I also agree that the movie's screenplay was mediocre, and really was equivocal about what it wanted to do and say. TBH, I felt as though I were watching the film more as an assignment, rather than in anticipation of an enjoyable film. I think I liked it more than you did, but it was a bit of a let down-- likely due to the tremendous build up.

Really, nothing much new to see here if you're a Scorsese fan but still an engaging film. The aging of the actors worked well at some points but was pretty clearly apparent at others. De Niro, Pesci and Pacino were all excellent, especially Pesci in a refreshingly un-manic role for him.

The Estruscan Smile (2018)

Despite its cryptic title, which may have hurt its preconception, this is a very pleasant and attractive story of a Scotsman set in his ways who travels from his home in the Hebrides to visit his son and family in San Francisco with the aim of re-connecting, and also to get an overdue medical examination.

It's a simple story which provides humor and some heart warming. The veteran Brian Cox is probably the best elderly character actor on the planet to play the role of Rory MacNeil. It's such perfect casting that one is never in doubt as to who MacNeil is.

There were fine portrayals by Rosanna Arquette, Peter Coyote, Treat Williams, Thora Birch, and J.J. Feild (playing against type).

It's a mystery why this picture was assigned an R rating, as there was no sex, violence, or language. Although there are plenty of adult themes, IMO it should have received a PG-13 or even PG.

We are not often able to enjoy well made, well acted, simple films without all the razzmatazz. There is no mystery here, and the film's story is fairly well presented early on. But it's a movie that one can merely sit back and have some enjoyment of a very nice production.

Of course, since its otaku anime, it depicts air battles with flying mages and the main character is a 10-year-old girl who happens to be the major. :D 8.5/10

I, Tonya (2017)

Quite enjoyable biopic that isn't really concerned about the truth. Lots of good characters (pretty nutters but good), nice pacing and well used cinematic gimmickry. The acting was good too, especially Tonya and her mother (including young Tonya, McKenna Grace is one of my favorite child actors at the moment - perhaps because she does so many horror films).

Lord of the Flies (1963)

I don't think I've ever read the book completely (I know it was discussed either in junior high or high school but I don't remember actually reading it) so I can't compare it to the movie but I'm sure that the idea could be made into a much better film. Pacing is completely off here and civilization gives in way too fast. It also hints at multiple interpretations so it's kind of hard to say what the director wanted to say (fragility of civilization, civilization vs savagery, faults of democracy). Oh, and whoever's responsible for the soundtrack should have his/her eardrums punctured - that pounding and kyrie chant really got on my nerves.

Making his feature film directorial debut, Swiss filmmaker Anthony Jerjen takes the helm of this drama about two siblings who are in the business of opioid dealings. Kit wants to get out of the game but soon learns his little brother Boots wants in on the family business, but when Boots' first deal goes sour, a series of events catapults Kit back in the world he wants to leave. Josh Hartnett, Margarita Levieva, and Owen Teague are great as the trio of siblings and despite a few small flaws here and there, it is a pretty good drama that makes good use of its locales and cast.

Meh... The scares weren't scary, bland and predictable through and through. There was a plot twist at the end but the problem is 1) the entire film that preceded it sucked; 2) it was so transparent from the start there was going to be some sort of 'gotcha' at the end, I started losing interest very early on.

Starring the Sultan of Swat, The Titan of Terror, The Colossus of Clout (the Colossus of Clout), The Great Bambino, Babe Ruth as, you guessed it, George Herman Ruth. I wasn't really expecting anything except a bunch of old films of Maharajah of Mash mashing and playing, playing and mashing, which I could watch for days, but instead got a real movie. Not necessarily a good one but amusing nonetheless about the King of Crash and his journey from small town ice wrangler to the big league stardom. Had some fun with the title cards, mostly trying to decipher some of that 1920's slang.

Couple of rewatches...

Jurassic Park (1993)

This one has aged surprisingly well. Characters are really one-dimensional but still sort of likable. The story is told quite neutrally and focuses on fun instead of lecturing. Dinosaurs still look pretty good. I wasn't expecting to like this as much.

3.5
--

The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997)

The sequel has much worse writing. It contradicts the original (in which the dinos were born in the main island), lectures about the nature preservation and tries to divide its characters into heroes and villains (while the true villain is ecoterrorist "hero" who's practically responsible for every single life lost in the film). Leading characters are still quite good though and dinos rock.

I had the same exact reaction to Marriage Story and gave it the same score.

It wasn't a bad movie, but I was expecting much more from it. There were a couple moments of sheer brilliance from both Driver and Johansson, but, overall, the movie didn't do much for me personally.

I still think Kramer Vs. Kramer, which this movie was trying to emulate in a way, is still the most effective movie about troubled marriages and divorce from the story and acting standpoints.

The Farewell (2019)

It's a little surprising that this film got so much attention. It's a "nice" story, but if you've read the teaser premise going in --that a family hides a terminal cancer diagnosis from it's matriarch so that she won't be stressed-- you've got the whole film. There's even a revelation at the end that makes one wonder what was the point of making the picture.

To be sure there was good acting and good ensemble work evident in most of the scenes which portray family gatherings. It was a nice change to see Tzi Ma (24, Arrival, Sky Scraper) play a family man. There were other good performances as well, but nothing outstanding.

The movie was nominated at the Golden Globes both for best foreign language film, musical or comedy; and Awkwafina for best actress. The comedy portions must have passed me by, although there were a few light-hearted moments. Awkwafina did nice work, but nothing particularly exceptional.

So I'm at a loss for the film's buzz. Perhaps it's a current fashion to promote Chinese cinema; or maybe Awkwafina's feminism gave her some plus points. It's not a bad film, it's just that it's a mediocre story which, if it had been about an American family in the U.S., we might never have heard of it.

Doc's rating: 5/10

Iroquois
01-09-20, 01:19 PM
I don't think you could've made it about an American family, though - it's established as a Chinese cultural practice and the core conflict rests on the one American-born member of the family not wanting to go along with the plan (plus they say it couldn't work in America anyway).

Typically artistic take on the human condition by Bruno Dumont. It's not for everyone but I love his realism (neo-neo?). It's slow and ponderous. The acting is patchy and the story slight but the picture itself wins through. Such an almost bloody-mindedness to portray his vision it's hard not to applaud it.

Australia's answer to the hit 2003 indie film My Big Fat Greek Wedding revolves around the budding romance between a Greek Orthodox schoolteacher and a Lebanese Muslim lawyer. The stars of the film, Richard Bracantisano and Andrea Demetriades show great chemistry together and on top of that, the reactions from both Alex's father and Eve's mother is as hilarious as Gus in MBFGW. I would love to see both Tony Nikalakopoulos and Michael Constantine in a buddy movie together as aging Greek dad/buddies. I would pay to see that!

A notorious flop that put United Artists out of business. It's 3 1/2 hours long and was surrounded by controversy including charges of animal cruelty. Apparently it's been looked at in higher esteem as the years have gone by, and I watched it because it's included on BFI's top 100 westerns list. It's got a very deep cast headlined by Kris Kristofferson, Christopher Walken, and Isabelle Huppert. Director Michael Cimino hit it big with The Deer Hunter, and I kept thinking that he all of a sudden fancied himself as sort of an in prime Coppola. It's very Cinematic, and although Ebert tore it apart for how it looked, I thought it was a big strength. There's a lot of strong stuff here but it is bloated and it doesn't all work well enough. I liked it but with its length and everything that was put in to it, it needed to be great to be successful.

A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (2019)

This is a heart warming uplifting film, the type of which is rarely made any more. There are strong biographical elements, certainly in its representation of the indomitable Fred Rogers who hosted children's television programs for 40-plus years (chiefly Mister Rogers" Neighborhood) on KQED from Pittsburgh; and also the main protagonist, Lloyd Vogel, written to represent Tom Junod, a jaded magazine writer, who is assigned to do a short piece on Mr. Rogers for Esquire magazine.

Vogel's frustrating and somewhat resentful and discontented life is gradually turned around as he spends more time with Rogers, having originally suspected him as a phony. This is the meat of the story.

I felt an uneasiness as the ending credits rolled, not being able to put my finger on the gnawing shortfall I felt from the obviously good story. Then it dawned on me that Roger's character as written seemed over done. That it was difficult to accept Rogers as an angel appearing out of nowhere who improved the lives of everyone with whom he came into contact.

The reason for the incongruity is that little to no explanation was given to show how Rogers got the way he was, or to indicate where he got his psychological and moral insights. The fact is that in real life Rogers was an ordained Presbyterian minister who had done graduate studies in child development at the University of Pittsburgh, and had established a 30 year close working relationship with the child psychologist Margaret McFarland. When one understands Roger's bona fides, then his character as portrayed by Hanks becomes much more acceptable and convincing.

Apart from that writing omission, the production was very well put together. Hank's portrayal was slightly too saintly, but still believable (Turns out he is a distant cousin of Fred Rogers'). Matthew Rhys convincingly played the world weary writer, whose film it was to make or break, and he was able to bring it off with a certain smooth dedication, despite his character's somewhat uneven writing.

But it was the veteran Chris Cooper who impressed me as Rhys' father. Cooper has a large character palette, and he used the full gamut of emotion and nuance in this role.

It's interesting that the original Mister Rogers Neighborhood set, camera equipment, puppets, props and miniatures were all used in the film, which lent authenticity to the picture.

The time I heard/read about some of Japan's contemporary issues which are infidelity and rising divorce rate, I can laugh only because mostly it reflects from their entertainment world--such this (http://asianwiki.com/Matrimonial_Chaos_-_Saikou_no_Rikon). sometimes it feels to be some kind of absurd either on how prone the bond itself or the concept and approach that could be so fundamentally different, culturally.
While in a way, it does not reduce the universality of the story, this movie gives insight and subtle reflection into how the sense of emptiness, the existential struggle of the feminine voices amid the ineptitude of understanding between themselves and the patriarch-centric of Japanese society,

This movie is so great for such a long time that the last half hour sticks out as such a disappointment. It takes the story in a very weird and unsatisfying direction, completely deflating the tension it built up before. Florence Pugh's acting is very strange in these final scenes as well, just making the same frowny face the whole time. Despite all that the movie is good, but I prefer Hereditary.

Missing Link (2019) - 7/10. What a delightful little movie. Loved it! The wonderful world of stop-motion! Visually well crafted as well. Sarcastic, the kind I like. British humour, is so much more layered, it just makes it all the more fun. And not to mention the star cast for this one was loaded too. Came out in April, but fell through the cracks for me.

Reminds of the movie, The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists! which came out a few years ago, which was up for the Oscars and didn't win. This one will be the same. Oscars love the CGI orgy from Pixar and Disney.

Not as grimy as the average spaghetti western but every bit as good. A young man works for peanuts cleaning up crap and sweeping porches and is constantly put down and ridiculed. Lee Van Cleef plays a gunfighter who arrives in town and takes him under his wing. They form a partnership and the kid turns out to be quite the gunfighter himself. Is the relationship sustainable? Until They Sail (1957)

The film, characterized by Paul Newman as a woman's picture, was directed by Robert Wise, and stars three gorgeous actresses: Piper Laurie, Jean Simmons, and Joan Fontaine.

The setting is in New Zealand during WWII, where many of the local men are off to war, while the island is visited by American marines who are tasked with fighting in the Pacific theater.

The movie is a pot-boiler, with many interlocking stories that were considered controversial in the late '50s. Despite some of its prurient themes, the writing seemed shallow or superfluous, which made some of the scenes that should have been moving seem flat.

The picture is remarkable for several reasons: it was Sandra Dee's first movie role (good performance). The film was among the early wave tackling new reality themes that started to assert themselves during the late 1950s. Although it was in black & white, it was shot in wide screen CinemaScope, which would have helped its appeal in the theaters.

So, aside from its vague feeling of dramatic lack of depth --some owing to its being anachronistic-- the film is worth a watch to see an early Paul Newman role. He and Piper Laurie were to star together a few years later in the memorable film The Hustler.

It was one of year's best for me. It's not that she won't be stressed. It's a tradition. Probably I connected a bit more coz my family was spread across different continents most of my childhood. The cultural differences between growing up in the west and growing up in the east were explored very nicely.

The Report (2019) - 7.5/10. I was ignoring this movie coz it was an Amazon Original . Not a huge fan of any of the stuff they make other than one season of Lore. But this was very nice. Not gripping as in nail-biting. But kinda makes you wonder how everything led to this. The movie pulls no punches when it comes to the names, location etc. It is like taking a Tommy Gun to the Bush presidency and the CIA administration of the time. Good stuff. Recommended!

Adam Driver is fantastic, so is Annette Bening with a calm and collected portrayal of a senator!

Rewatches again...

Jurassic World (2015)

Not as bad as Jurassic Park III but not much better either. Dinos look better than ever though. Script recycles too much from the previous films (like the mandatory raptors and T-rex coming to rescue). It's also pretty preachy (I wish they'd make films like this for the fun instead of the message).

Spasms (1983)

If I'd agree to a term guilty pleasure this would be one of mine. One of the rare films that actually scared me as a kid. Stacked cast for B-horror (Peter Fonda and Oliver Reed) and it smartly avoids showing the snake as much as possible. Those bloated snake bites are positively gross and rather well made too. It's silly and campy but I still like it. One of the forgotten gems.

York Shackleton directs this film that has quite an interesting story: A decade after accidentally shooting his partner, who was held hostage at gunpoint. a former Texas Ranger has given up the gun. Now the Marshall of a small town, he is forced to once again pick up the gun when a biker gang invades the town with the intent to pull off a heist. Guy Pearce is great in the lead role...I mean this actor is great in any role he takes and Devon Sawa does a bit OTT but still pretty good as biker leader Diablo. There are some twists to the plot and fans of the classic Hee Haw series will get their jollies with an actor who plays the interim mayor of the town as he resembles and sounds like the late great Archie Campbell.

American Beauty (Drama) 4.5

I love this movie. It's not an artistic masterpiece on the level of Ozu or Bergman, it doesn't have that hint of artistry, but it's technically flawless. Every technical aspect is excellent, the cinematography, the acting, the writing, the directing, I can't find any flaw. But what makes this movie truly great is the story, plot, and themes. This is a movie that celebrates life, it's about life and death, truth and deception, and is brutally honest in its depiction of everything. The story revolves around a family that appears normal on the surface but is complex and weird beneath the surface, and doesn't apologize for it. Gradually as the movie moves on it becomes more bold and less ashamed of the truth about life. What is normal? At times you don't notice the cinematography, and at other times the composition is the main focus. The characters are criticised thoroughly and the culmination is a mixture of lust, heartbreak, devotion, and murder. There are moments that make me cheer, make me laugh, make me swell with joy, and make me sympathise and understand even with the worst of people. There is an incredible understanding of life in this movie. There is one scene where Spacey's character is at an upper class party bored out of his mind when a young waiter identifies himself as the boy who just moved in next door. He says hi and there is an awkward pause. Spacey wonders why the boy is still there. The boy asks him if he likes to party. "Excuse me?" Spacey asks. "Do you like to get high?" Suddenly Spacey lights up like this boring party is about to get interesting. They're out back smoking weed, and the waiter's boss opens the door. "I'm not paying you to do whatever you're doing." He says in an aggressive tone. This is the kind of intimidation a boss may use to get his employee in line, but the boy is so bold and brave. "So don't pay me." "What?" His boss says, stammering. "I quit, so you don't have to pay me. Now leave me alone." The freedom blows Spacey's character away. It's incredible, this idea that in life you are free, and slavery is a state of mind. Spacey starts to live freely after the influence of this incredible young man who sees life like no one else, it captivates his daughter too who falls in love with the young man. I don't want to spoil too much, but this movie is full of incredible moments that move my heart and soul.

"Do you want to see the most beautiful thing I've ever experienced?" I'm paraphrasing, that's not an exact quote, but the boy asks the girl and shows her a video of a plastic bag being blown by the wind. He describes an epiphany he had when he captured it on film, it was like a spirit dancing before him showing him that life was pure joy and there was nothing to fear. You watch as a plastic bag is blown in circles by the wind, dancing before you among the leaves, and it is spiritual and magnificent.

Just the film title and rating this time, typing on a tablet and I'm soooo slow on it compared to my broken computer...
