I feel you're taking it too literally. The film is all about the USA. The current political climate. The current undertones of empowerment, and the rise of the right. The rise of the classes - being given a voice (Red was literally given a voice). The duality of people's real side is done brilliantly. It's a way, way better film than Get Out in my opinion.

Don't get me wrong, I liked it, but I thought a lot of things could have been done differently to make the story seem more "rational."

What you just described sounds like Sorry to Bother You. That was an excellent film IMO that also used shock value, but an average moviegoer could leave the viewing understanding what point the director was putting across. With Us, sure it is thought-provoking, but it creates so many varying "theories" so I think that was kind of the fault of lazy writing.

Gloria Bell (2019)

I really liked this, probably because I felt I could relate a lot with Gloria. Julianne Moore is still gorgeous, too.

It's a pleasant slice-of-life drama for when you want something quiet and not-too-over-the-top while you're relaxing and sipping on a glass of wine.

I do wish that scenes didn't cut away in the middle of some interesting conversations. It also would have been nice to see more of a backstory.

I'll have to watch the Spanish-language original sometime, which was set in Chile.

This is probably the most emotionally powerful movie I've seen this year. Brilliant performances by the cast. I did watch the special features and do a little research online to confirm some of the accuracies behind some of the characters and stories, and it's pretty much all there. Harrowing, but incredible story

I watched Midsommar last night. It was good: 8/10. It has, of course, a very Wicker Tree (a bit of Wicker Man, but a good bit more of Wicker Tree) kind of vibe to it, but it is more interesting since you are able to follow and see drastic changes in the protagonist which does not happen in either of the Wicker movies. Also, the cinematography is fantastic. The director who also did Hereditary was a unique visual style and tone. His transitions are quite different and sometimes seamless, sometimes jarring and sometimes both. The visuals while the kids are on drugs are truly freaky and interesting. I will purchase this on Blu-Ray or 4k.

Saw this last night and agree about the visuals it reminded me of Birdman with some of the long seamless shots and the establishing shots were stunning.

I find that movies about racism are always interesting. The reason is that such a thing does not make any sense to me yet it was so prevalent in the US south about 60 years ago. The kind of thing where just because of their skin color, police officers put people in jail or segments of the population that cannot go into a bar otherwise they will be violently abused. It is really weird and fascinating.

Although the story felt a bit inadequate for the portrayal of such grave social problem with the rather cartoonish characterization, I loved the Italian-American lead, the guy was pure fun to watch.

Children Who Chase Lost Voices (2011) - Rewatch on Blu-ray rating_5
This is the film that introduced me to the great Makoto Shinkai and it continues to amaze me. I fell in love with it right away and my appreciation for it has only grown with repeated viewings. Shinkai is a master at creating an immersive experience and he doesn't fail here. One thing is worth mentioning. Some have taken to comparing Shinkai to the legendary Hayao Miyazaki, both favorably and unfavorably. Some have even called him, “the next Miyazaki,” a title Shinkai himself disagrees with, having a lot of respect for Studio Ghibli's founder. To be perfectly honest, I think it's dangerous to compare Shinkai to Miyazaki. If you want to know what I think, let Miyazaki be Miyazaki and let Shinkai be Shinkai; each is great in his own way and trying to compare the two is meaningless, much like comparing apples and oranges. With that said, let's move on. The story is a great one, exploring themes of life and death and whether or not it's right to try to bring back the dead, eventually deciding that, as James T. Kirk says in the opening minutes of The Wrath of Khan, “How we deal with death is at least as important as how we deal with life,” and as Shin says in the latter half of Shinkai's film, “The living are more important.” Shinkai and his team of animators also do a great job of making it exciting and making the world of Agartha both interesting and threatening. Fun Fact: After some fans did their homework, they figured out that the film is set in 1973, the year Shinkai was born. Matching the story, the animation is stunning, as is the norm with Shinkai, which Sentai Filmworks has reproduced exceptionally well on the 1080p transfer with every color well-saturated but not garish, every line crystal clear without tipping over into edge enhancement, and every stylistic choice and visual effect readily apparent. Tenmon, in his final collaboration with Shinkai to date, provides an excellent musical score which, along with Anri Kumaki's Hello, Goodbye and Hello, comes across loud and clear on the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track without drowning out the dialogue or sound effects. Speaking of which, since I recently turned off the Dynamic Range Compression setting on the Blu-ray player, sound effects packed more of a punch this time than they did on previous viewings. Sentai has also produced an excellent English dub. Hilary Haag is excellent as Asuna Watase, the film's 11-year-old protagonist whose life has been difficult ever since she lost her father at a very young age, matching the character's age without devolving into being whiny or screamy, and actually molding her into a strong character who is arguably the film's most likable through her adventure in the underground world of Agartha, where some believe it is possible to restore life to the dead. So is Leraldo Anzaldua as Shin Canaan Preases, who Asuna befriends in Agartha, as is Corey Hartzog as Shun, Shin's older brother who Asuna meets early in the film and whose death sets much of the plot in motion. David Matranga is also excellent as Mr. Morisaki, Asuna's substitute teacher who wants to resurrect his wife, portraying the character as flawed and selfish, though not necessarily evil. Shelley Calene-Black is also solid as Asuna's mother who has had to work hours upon hours on end ever since losing her husband, limited as her screen time may be, and the dub script is completely natural. This is one of Shinkai's best for sure and it easily sucks me in every time I see it.

Your Name (2016) - Rewatch on FunimationNow rating_5
So this is it, the film that put Shinkai on the map and what a film to put him on the map. This one also never ceases to amaze me. The story is still a great one. Fun fact: Mitsuha's teacher was the female lead in Shinkai's short film The Garden of Words. The animation is stunning, which Funimation more than capably reproduces on the 1080p transfer, though I guess it would probably look even better on Funimation's Blu-ray release. It still looks better than the DVD did, though. On this go around, I couldn't help getting a kick out of Taki looking pissed about Tsukasa and Ms. Okudera goofing off. The RADWIMPS score is still completely and utterly charming, as are the songs, which I can't imagine the film without. They'd most likely sound better on the Blu-ray's Dolby TrueHD 5.1 track since the audio isn't much of a change from the DVD, but that's fine since streaming doesn't exactly have the bandwidth for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. Funimation's English dub is still one of the best I've ever heard. Michael Sinterniklaas and Stephanie Sheh, who also directed this dub, are still amazing here as Taki Tachibana and Mitsuha Miyamizu. It still amazes me how well they did switching dialects and tones when the two teens switch bodies, lifestyles, and genders. Sheh was also the casting director on this dub and she picked everyone just right, from Glynis Ellis as Hitoha, Mitsuha's grandmother, to Ray Chase who is better here as Takagi, one of Taki's friends, than he was as Gendo Ikari in the Netflix dub of Neon Genesis Evangelion. The dub script is also completely natural. This is also one of Shinkai's best that has no trouble sucking me in and one of the most emotionally satisfying films of the past few years. There's no doubt in my mind that Shinkai is one of my favorite directors working today, and I can't wait for his Weathering With You to show up Stateside since he certainly knows how to make a good movie.

it still amazes me how unappreciated this movie was/is
the acting is good, the bridge scene (https://tinyurl.com/y4g9kucu) was one of the best dramatic scenes i've ever saw
the plot is interesting but the message is what really catches my attention
they talk about an elbow in america, a elbow trump successfully explored
the poverty in the industrialized remote areas closing the only doors those people had
the penal system that make humble people detach from the people they love
the lack of opportunities they give to the young people after they fight there wars

Arctic is a fun survival film to watch, if you like those kinds of movies and I do. Its all about Mads Mikkelsen who's survived a plane crash in the arctic and is stuck there. The fun part is you can image what survival steps you'd take if you were in Mads' shoes. Hopefully your toes would look better than his did! Lots of nice scenery as it's filmed in Iceland. What a relentlessly gut-wrenching, frenetic, macabre whirlwind of a movie this is! Isabelle Adjani and Sam Neill at the top of their respective games, amazing direction and cinematography, a few iconic, unforgettable scenes that you can't unsee - it's quite a ride, and one you will not easily forget. Bizarre, unbridled masterpiece!

The Mondo Vision bluray looks stunning - highly recommended, if you like the film!

I have this movie and have been meaning to see it, but I've been dealing with insomnia, flu, etc., for the past 5 weeks. Is this a movie that is easy to follow, and is it all in English? Your high rating bumped it up to my present want.

Yes, it is all in English but it is one crazy, hysterical, twisted, disorienting movie, an assault on the senses, if you will - that much I can tell you. It is also very polarizing as far as I can tell, so I can't promise you won't be disappointed. It's more than just a movie - it's an experience, a cinematic statement you can either take or leave. I thought it was brilliant in how it allegorically portrays the traumatic psychological experience of a dysfunctional, disintegrating family teetering on the precipice of divorce.

I always thought this looked a bit whimsical for my taste and I'm also not generally a fan of movies with kids as main characters. However, I thought this might be a special exception after reading member's thoughts over the years, and special it was. The kid was actually adorable and Alfredo one of the most likable characters I've seen. It's a great movie for people who love movies.

Spoilers
Halfway through it changes; the kid is now a teen and Alfredo is different. I thought oh no, don't change, but the movie had to grow and it never missed a beat. The ending is bittersweet, and for once I was yearning for the happy ending, practically begging for Elena to appear. It's because of how much I cared for the characters. It's still a great ending. I understand there's a different version out there that I'd like to see sometime.

The Expedition (Abhijaan) (1962) by Satyajit Ray

My ninth film by Ray was not on par with his best. Despite that it was a good melodrama with some great shots. Subpar level Satyajit Ray, is better than most films. The Expedition seemed like an Indian version of earlier Italian Neorealist films, with class conscious comments, for instance critique of the caste system. Similarities with later great American films like Taxi Driver (1976) and The Mule (2018), makes this an interesting watch, albeit not one of Rays masterpieces.

The Running Man - 1987

Man was this 80s. Saw it on AMC the other night. Commericals were annoying me so I finished it online. It was very interesting but man it wasn't very good ha. The acting left a lot to be desired, especially the lead chick, ouch. But I read she was a singer. Some painful Arnold catchphrases that rival his bad ones in Batman and Robin. But I'll hand it to the movie that it was entertaining even if it was a bad mess. I actually think there could be a good movie somewhere in this in the right hands in a remake. Well at least a better executed film with a lot better special effects. Also Jim Brown is the man lol.

Anyways, it's entertaining enough to keep your attention, but man the story and acting and out dated effects really hurt it. But definitely quintessential 80s movie.

I'd give it a weak 2 out of 5. :popcorn::popcorn:

Shazam - 2019

I was looking forward to catching this one. Meant to go to the theaters. But I am starting to cool on the superhero flicks to the point I can wait for them to come out on streaming. Anyways the film was a lot of fun. Levi looked like he was having a blast. And the two lead kids really did a good job. The whole concept that he is just a kid and just says Shazam to become a superhero while staying a kid is really cool. I wasn't familiar with Shazam which really helps you to enjoy the end more when you are ignorant to the comics. The end was the best part to me, I didn't see that coming even though it was pretty obvious. But they executed it well to me.

I thought Strong did well....strong...work as the villain. His power and how he got it was cool and he felt justified in wanting to end Billy Batson. I am not sure how they move forward with Shazam but they definitely should have held off and took their time with the Justice League. Shazam and Levi would have brought a lot of levity and fun to that team up. Plus with the success of Aquaman and Wonder Woman and Superman and Batman established it would have fared better to me.

Also it was nice to see Philly as the setting instead of generic New York. It certainly wasn't flawless. It had some bumps along the first half of the movie I don't think were handled great. But it knew what it was and was confident in what it was. Fun movie. I am down to see another one. Definitely my 2nd favorite DCEU movie behind Wonder Woman. (Well if we aren't counting Nolan's batmans)

I'd give it a 3.5 out of 5. Almost 4 quality.

PS. I always forget about Meagan Good but she has to be the sexist black chick ever. Any race ever really. :yup::love::fire:

Dogman (American release in 2019)

A kind-hearted man who is a bit of a pushover (perhaps due to his small stature) looks after dogs for a living, and is bullied by his neighbor, a large, menacing and immature coke addict who uses criminal behavior to get what he wants. The dog-groomer wants to live his life in peace and take his daughter on seaside vacations, but his neighbor won't leave him alone.

It's slow-paced at times, so it's best to watch when one has the patience for a "gritty realism" type of drama.

https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51C3C9AW28L._SY445_.jpg

It's not my favorite 80s teen comedy, but I think it is the best 80's teen comedy...a clever story that teens can relate to, imaginative direction by John Hughes, a star-making performance by Matthew Broderick and Jeffrey Jones the perfect comic villain.

5

https://fffmovieposters.com/wp-content/uploads/12039.jpg

Warren Beatty established himself as a filmmaker as producer and star of Bonnie and Clyde and won an Oscar for directing Reds, but I think this is his masterpiece...this remake of the 1941 film Here Comes Mr. Jordan is a warm and winning comic fantasy with just the right dash of romance...handsomely mounted with a superb supporting cast, including Oscar-nominated performances from Jack Warden and Dyan Cannon. The star also received three nominations himself for Lead Actor, co-screenwriter with Elaine May and co-director with Buck Henry. This film is perfection, pure and simple.

A brilliant film in black & white in a realistic location-shot crime/legal/mystery. One of Jimmy Stewart's finest performances, which also features the great George C. Scott's break out performance (which was magnificent). The drop dead sexy Lee Remick, the powerful Ben Gazzara, and the veteran Arthur O'Connell bring believability to the cast.

One of my favorite comediennes, the inestimable Eve Arden, plays Stewart's legal secretary, who delivers some of her patented sarcastic one liners.

This is not only one of the best courtroom dramas of all time, but it's one of the great films as well.

Very neat little film about a mother recovering from an acid attack. It's not without it's flaws but the central performance by first time actress Vicky Knight is pretty phenomenal.

The film itself is not just about recovery, but also about mothers and daughters, family and partners. It has some heartbreaking moments but is ultimately uplifting with a pay off. Very decent.

I had the chance to watch Shazam a couple of days ago. Although the DC Extended Universe has thus far been a mixed-bag as far as quality is concerned, I found Shazam to be among the more watchable among them. It's a controversial opinion, but Batman v. Superman is actually my favorite in the series of films, simply because it delivers a fan-service I was satiated by. Wonder Woman is the most coherent and well-executed, but I found that Batman v. Superman shot higher and swallowed its own tail, whereas Wonder Woman only aimed for the middle and stuck the landing. Shazam is a little like Wonder Woman in that respect. The humor is charming and sentimental, and it's very standard and conventional. It isn't among the heavy-hitters of a crowded genre, but it's a quiet delight.

By the way, first post in about a year...

I do have issues with Tim Burton's dark and grisly film adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's groundbreaking 1979 Broadway musical that won nine Tony Awards. Sondheim's score has been tampered with, but Burton makes up for it partially by fleshing out the title character's backstory in a way it wasn't onstage and honestly, there are portions of the score that just wouldn't have worked in a movie. I initially had reservations when I first heard that Johnny Depp had been cast in the title role, but fears were assuaged immediately...his beautifully internalized performance totally works and I also realized that singing in the movie was not going to require the operatic-style baritone that Len Cariou brought to the Broadway stage. Definitely had issues with Helena Bonham Carter as Mrs. Lovett though...the character is pretty much comic relief in the stage piece and Burton and Carter sucked all the humor out of the character in a piece that was in serious need of comic relief. I always thought bringing this musical to the screen would have been impossible, but Burton did a credible job and as I mentioned in my original review, I have never seen blood so red.

I was surprised by this drama (coming out tomorrow). The film revolves around an ex-con who is starting his life over by working as a grocer and is happily married to the sheriff's daughter. However, when he and his new BFF go on a hunting trip, his past returns to haunt him when his former associate gets out of prison and kills his wife in retaliation for the money he stole upon his release. Luke Grimes and Frank Grillo churn out really excellent performances with Robert Taylor's sheriff acting a conscience for Grimes' ex-con.

A friend of mine recommended this, so I thought I would give it a shot despite my lack of religious beliefs. It's got Denzel and Mila Kunis after all. I wanted to give this a lower rating, but it's actually pretty engaging. The twist at the end is pretty far fetched though.

https://i.ebayimg.com/images/a/T2eC16R,!ygE9s7HJGnSBQq8p(wSS!~~/s-l300.jpg

The true story of the horrific murder and torture of Sylvia Likens. Not an easy watch at all. Some gruesome scenes. A young Ellen Page is quite good as Likens and Catherine Keener plays the evil Gertrude Baniszewski. The true story is arguably even more horrific.

The big problem I have is a dream sequence towards the end of the film. It didn't work at all, especially as there is another dream like sequence to end the film, which is done really well.

Other than that it's a fairly decent film about a shocking case.

Sorry Joao, only logging on now. Its a pretty difficult question. Both really good performances and both great films although I do like Fear and Loathing better. Murray's interpretation is a bit more 'normal' whilst Depp's is quite exaggerated, which was intended. You do have to keep in mind that Fear is directed by Gilliam so the performances and film as a whole were always going to be totally different to Linson's. If you don't mind taking a trip through surreal-world Vegas, you'll enjoy Fear more I reckon.

Lush film that has some really stunning scenery. The performances are great, especially Pugh who will likely continue to get big roles and based on this, she deserves it. I absolutely loved the hallucinogenic scenes in it and overall, its a film that will stay with you. Probably not as disturbing as I was expecting. Is this because almost all the scenes are during the day? Anyway, I'm still a fan and already am looking forward to what Aster has planned next.

Can You Ever Forgive Me? (2018)

I liked that Can You Ever Forgive Me was a bio-pic about an interesting event and an interesting person, Lee Israel. Lee (Melissa McCarthy) is an out of work author in desperate need of cash. Who decides to start forging rare, signed literary letters, so that she can sell them. How crazy is that? And it's true! So that's one reason I enjoyed this movie.

Another reason I liked this was the filming style. It was shot straight forward, with none of that gawd-awful back and forth time traveling intercut stuff. The movie had an actual beginning, a middle and a real ending too. Oh and no superheros or Disney princess were within sight:p I liked how all the scenes had a well worn and lived in look, which made me feel like I was right there in the thick of it. So kudos to the director, writer and film editor.

Melissa McCarthy (Lee Israel) best known as the female Adam Sandler;) plays it straight for once. Even though the film is labeled comedy, it's not. It's best to think of this as a bio pic drama with a few humorous moments included. But there's no silliness, no gags...thank goodness.

Jack Hock (played to perfection by Richard E. Grant) is a a shifty but likable rogue that befriends Lee. Grant was great in this and paired well with the stoic Lee Israel. Loved Jane Curtain as the literary agent who won't give Lee the time of day, gosh I miss Third Rock From the Sun.

Can You Ever Forgive Me is well made without glitz and gimmicks...and I appreciate that. Thanks @lenslady (http://www.movieforums.com/community/member.php?u=99178) for recommending this.

John Ford's first major movie is on the top 100 westerns list. It's 2 1/2 hours long and is excellent all the way through. It's about the building of America's first transcontinental railroad and the various dramas that could have went with it. I'm not sure of any historical accuracy but I still felt like I was watching a piece of history.

From the director of Martyrs except this one is in English. That movie has the reputation as a thought provoking mind bender, and I think the director tried to do too much with this one. There's too much blending of horror elements; home invasion, ghosts, scary dolls, scary dog, creepy house, psychological, nightmares, the blending of what's real and what's not, and the movie ends up being a chore to follow. It's made well and it's not a bad ride, but I thought it was a mess.

A glossy b-movie that was a bit of a wasted opportunity. Good premise but with a movie like this they should have turned it up to 11 (I'm talking about the gore of course). A group of Airborne are dropped in behind enemy lines to take down a communication tower. What they find are the Nazi's conducting experiments which reanimates dead folks. Some of the fx looked pretty bad, the Nazi Colonels face being the worst of it. It's not bad it but could have been a really good exploitation flick in the wrong hands.

The Sisters Brothers (2018) by Jacques Audiard

My third film by the French auteur Jacques Audiard was a finely tuned sensitive western. Recent films like Moonlight (2016) by Barry Jenkins or Blue Is the Warmest Color (2013) by Abdellatif Kechiche brings gender roles and nonconformal ways of living into the mainstream of cinema. The Sisters Brothers should be seen in the light of the recent wave of queer cinema, and the film as such conveys the childhood trauma and shame of hardened cowboys. Its an original take on the western genre and i would think that theoretical feminist pioneers such as Kimberlé Crenshaw and Judith Butler would be proud of the portrayal of The Sisters Brothers. Besides the original take on the western genre, The Sisters Brothers, was also quite entertaining with some riveting gunfight scenes and a compelling narrative.

Highly recommended

Stan & Ollie (2018)

There hasn't been a recent film that I have enjoyed more than this sweet movie in tribute to the legendary performers Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. The irony is, I was never the biggest fan of their movies, especially the slapstick. And still I loved their personas and their interaction, and the dance routines that were timelessly funny. I also first 'knew' of the duo not by their films, but through the reference- and reverence- paid to them by performers I so admired, like Dick Van Dyke and Johnny Carson. I' m sure they influenced generations of comics, I surely see Hardy in Jackie Gleason scenerios; and it is said Abbot and Costello were a later incarnation of the duo. In fact, they likely seeded many comedic scenes- movies, tv, stand up- where two hapless fellows , one more foolish than the other, bumbled their way through pratfalls, mishaps, confusion and exasperation.

Although the movie starts with a brief but riveting scene set at the time when they were the biggest hits in entertainment, it is all about their later years, a time past glory. They've been estranged for years, but join together in the nineteen fifties, on a tour that is hoped to gather audience attention, and more importantly, to snag them a role in a movie that would re ignite their careers. And although they both have found lasting love at this later stage in life, financial security has escaped them. So it seems initially, that this tour is basically all about business , rather than the love of the dance. So they go on tour - and one feels immersed in the lovely landscapes of post war England, beautifully photographed - playing to third rate venues and near empty seats. We are also introduced to two strong women, the wives of S & O, in performances as captivating as the superlative work of the two stars, Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly. I will not spoil the plot of the film except to say that the two men are heading towards a confrontation with each other that had been brewing for years. And that the rivalry and simmering resentment is lined by another moment between the wives, that is guaranteed to bring tears to your eyes. And also, as they tour Great Britain, more and more folks are being drawn to the shows, and the once tawdry halls are being replaced by elegant theatres with a full house.

What I most remember about the film is this wonderful portrayal of two men who are putting on new shows, way past their prime, but rediscovering the magic of their art - and each other. It is interesting that the people they are in real life are almost the opposite of each other on stage. Ollie is referred to by his nickname Babe, he is the people pleaser, the gentle soul. Stan is the sharp tack, with harder edges, the main writer of their routines, and a man of quick wit. And the original scenes from the 'real' S&O routines are seamlessly integrated into the plot, in a manner that is elegant, funny, and entrancing.

And the gentle heart that propels the film left a warm feeling in me for days, weeks after viewing. One of those films I would definitely see again. Although the passage of time in the film ( as much a character as Stan and Ollie) could give the movie a twinge of bittersweet sadness, it is a work of joy. Perhaps
because ( at least for this viewer) this movie asks - AND answers - three timeless questions:

-What is friendship?

-Is the performer most in love with the art, themselves , or the audience ?

-And when you add up the total of a life, to what is the artist most bound?

Here's the crib notes from my point of view:

- it is not the family you were born with, it's the family you choose.

- Yes, yes, and yes.

-Commence to dancing 😊

Going into this, I thought the premise was great and the cast was solid to back it up. However, it's lacking some special element to make it a superb movie. I enjoyed it, but I don't think I'll ever rewatch it, and I don't think anyone with no interest in the subject matter would find it too appealing either.

A tad disappointed with this. I found faults with the pace, much too slow in parts leading it to drag in places. I didn't particularly like the telekinetic element of it all although some of the resulting scenes were good. It just felt to me like a missed opportunity, it could have been much darker and harrowing, which could have made it better for me anyway. Beautifully shot nonetheless.

2nd Re-watch...The ending was different than I remember, but this razor-sharp dig at the Hollywood machine is still my favorite entry from the Christopher Guest rep company. A near brilliant screenplay with the company at the top of their game, with a standout Oscar-worthy performance from Catherine O'Hara. I must have been hallucinating the last time I saw this because for some reason, the last time I watched this, both Marilyn Hack (O'Hara) and Victor Allan Miller (Harry Shearer) received Oscar nominations and Victor actually won but none of that happened when I watched this time. I think I'm losing my mind, but it's still a fantastic movie.

1st Re-watch...one of the creepiest movies ever made, made the top 10 of My Most Disturbing Movie Experiences list...this movie has me cursing at the screen and keeps my stomach at knots. Dan Gilroy's direction is top-notch and Jake Gyllenhaal gives the bone-chilling performance of his career as techno geek/two bit hustler/sociopath Louis Bloom. And as I mentioned in my full review of this film, it still leaves a really bad taste in my mouth, but it's a riveting film.

If you expect a "small" film this is OK. If you expect anything more you'll be disappointed. Unlike Grillo's earlier film "Wheelman" it tries to cover too many bases and doesn't keep it quite as sharp. That was more than a TV movie, this (apart from the cursing)is a TV movie. Expected slightly more with Mackie in it but watcheable. 2.5

When I first saw it, I think in the late Nineties, it depressed me to the point at which I had to turn it off within about twenty minutes :). I did eventually get past that and watched the whole film, which as you say is okay. The title sequence won an award I remember.

Escaflowne (2000) - Rewatch on Blu-ray rating_5
Still amazing. I can't believe there are so many fans of The Vision of Escaflowne who dislike this film so much. I genuinely loved both and personally, I'd put them on equal footing. Sure, the story has changed somewhat to fit inside of a 100-minute film and sure, the character designs have also changed somewhat, but it's still Escaflowne, these characters are still Escaflowne's characters, and the main players, Hitomi and Van, still look very much like their series counterparts. It also still deals with many of the same themes the series did, namely that no one necessarily has to be alone. The animation is also stunning and it looks incredible on the 1080p transfer, though window boxed and presented in an unusual aspect ratio of 1.81:1 which deviates somewhat from the film's original aspect ratio of 1.85:1. The legendary Yoko Kanno also returns to this retelling with a haunting musical score, including the iconic Escaflowne chant, a more gothic Escaflowne chant, a haunting village chant, and two more chants in a fictional language she created just for the film. So just for craps and giggles, I watched it back-to-back with each dub, first the 2002 Ocean dub and then the 2016 Funimation redub. The Ocean dub is a decent dub and English-speaking InuYasha fans (among whom I am numbered) will probably enjoy it with how many voice actors the Ocean dub shares with InuYasha, but there's no doubt that the Funimation dub is better. Both are pretty well-acted, but the Funimation dub is even more so. Kelly Sheridan, who many will remember as Ukyo Kuonji in Ranma ½ and Sango in InuYasha, is pretty good as Hitomi, but Caitlin Glass, who has voiced such characters as Haruhi Fujioka in Ouran High School Host Club, Maya Ibuki in Evangelion, and Winry Rockbell in Fullmetal Alchemist, just nails it. The Hitomi Kanzaki we meet here is admittedly different from what she was in the series. The series' cheerful 15-year-old who was in love is now a depressed and world-weary 17-year-old who feels completely alone and feels like she simply wants to fade away and Glass does a better job of conveying this. Kirby Morrow, who many will remember as Miroku in InuYasha, and Aaron Dismuke, who has been dubbing anime ever since he was a kid and who many will remember as Alphonse Elric in Fullmetal Alchemist, are both excellent as Van, the king whose brother obliterated his kingdom while Vic Mignogna, who many will remember as Tamaki Suoh in Ouran High School Host Club, Kurz Weber in Full Metal Panic!, and Edward Elric in Fullmetal Alchemist, is, surprisingly, considerably better as Folken, the brother in question, than Paul Dobson, who many will remember as Happosai in Ranma ½ and the Satan-like big bad himself Naraku in InuYasha. Dobson just uses the same voice he used for Naraku and it doesn't really work because Folken is a more complex character who, as it turns out, isn't quite pure evil like Naraku is. Mignogna's take is more three-dimensional and therefore he wins the day here. Sonny Strait is also much better in the Funimation dub as Allen, one of Van's allies, than Brian Drummond while Jocelyn Loewen and Alexis Tipton are pretty much on equal footing as Merle, the anthropomorphic cat girl who is constantly concerned for Van's wellbeing. One area where the Funimation dub really destroys the Ocean dub is the fact the Funimation dub has a far more natural script where the Ocean dub's script is more stilted and awkward which hampers the performances in a few scenes. I mean, just compare the scenes where Hitomi says she wants Van to live and where she refers to herself and Van as kindred spirits. The Funimation dub has so much depth in those two scenes that the old Ocean dub lacks. Another thing hampering the Ocean dub is its sound design. Whoever mixed the Ocean dub back in '02 mixed the dialogue and music much too low. Even though both are presented in Dolby TrueHD 5.1, the Funimation dub sounds much better in both areas. With all that said, I still love Escaflowne. It's a darker and grittier Escaflowne than the series was for sure, but it maintains a sliver of hope and it's a far more rewarding film than it typically gets credit for being.

Entertaining and cautionary. I loved it. It shows the chaotic conditions in Germany at the end of the second World War, revealing that in such a degenerative regime, anybody can pick up a mantle and run with it.

Max Hubacher plays private Willi Herold, who finds a Nazi Captain's uniform, puts it on and causes carnage as he the power goes to his head. It's shot brilliantly and doesn't have a bad performance throughout. Some of the action is a little shocking, par for the course for such a movie, and the end credits are deliberately off kilter with the rest of the movie.

Crazy film. No idea how they shot some of the scenes but that's Herzog's devotion to his craft. Kinski is mesmerizing in this. His screen presence is huge and those piercing blue eyes just follow the viewer round. I think at one point he slaps a horse in the face. Lust, greed and power are the main themes, and Aguierre says at one point "Wealth is far more than gold - it's power than fame". How apt. Darkly comic in places too.

I imagine this was a huge inspiration for films like Embrace of the Serpent. There is also a very nice eerie electro score too.

The music's excellent isn't it? I don't remember him slapping a horse – he's supposed to have had quite an affinity with animals. I forget when he was holding that tiny sloth-like creature behind the scenes, whether it was this or Fitzcarraldo. And the monkey bit is funny.

1st watching for years. This film isn't really erotic visually but there is an underlying attraction in the doomed relationship between Paul and Jeanne. Both actors are incredible so I was a disturbed about Maria Schneiders revelations in later years that Bertolucci took advantage of her youth and innocence. There's a few hard to watch scenes (esp Paul wailing on this wife) and some scenes are just downright (unintentionally) hilarious! The whole film really is excellent.

Spoilers for the film and also for The Omen :

A generous rating for the ideas but I'm left with a feeling of it being idiotic.

The beginning is quite a chore as the found footage characters are so awful — I have to confess I went all Joan Rivers and thought 'if anyone needed to die it was these guys':rolleyes:. Of course the denouement, which is clever on the face of it, changes a lot in retrospect, so my opinion might be different on [an unlikely] second watch.

I liked the almost bullet time opening and its uses later on; the way the title text increases in size is very effective and I've never seen anything like it before, or at least done as well as it is here. The direction probably didn't live up to these elements.

One of the most stupid aspects is the journalists releasing footage of hideous carnage on prime time television, which made me recall the whacking great front page newspaper photo of an impaled Patrick Troughton in The Omen; plus I was questioning how feasible the "snuff" film's editing would have been in the timescale.

Ultimately I got to see Radha Mitchell again and only watched it because she was in it .

This one's for lenslady, because she's a big folk music fan. Directed by Christopher Guest, and featuring many of his stock players, this mockumentary is so adept at seeming like a real documentary that it's easy to miss the satire and its lampooning dialogue.

Guest is a master at this style of film, but despite perfect performances from most of the cast, along with their ability to play musical instruments and sing, it didn't tickle my funny bone in the same way as did Guest's Confessions of a Dangerous Mind's send-up of Hollywood.

It may be that Guest is past his prime today, but there are a dozen subjects I'd love to see him satirize...

5th re-watch...The most controversial and talked about film of 2005, perhaps the entire decade. I am one of the few people on the planet who believes this film deserved the Best Picture Oscar it won. This movie ruffled a lot of feathers during its initial release because it shed a very unflattering light on behaviors in this country that a lot of people would like to think no longer exsist, but I think anyone who didn't find something in this film that they could relate to or find completely believable is lying to him/herself. The most impressive thing about this film is the balance Paul Haggis' story provides, primarily through the characters played by Chris "Ludacris" Bridges and Ryan Phillippe and the surprising climaxes to their stories which we don't see coming at all. I think this film is a masterwork and it hasn't lost one bit of its power in the 14 years since its release. I saw this film during its original theatrical release and as I walked out of the theater, I said to myself, "This movie is going to win the Best Picture Oscar." I also said that Matt Dillon would win Best Supporting Actor, but he did get a nomination.

I did watch Songcatcher last night, and I really enjoyed most of the 15 or so songs, especially the Appalachian type mountain ballads. As a production, the movie itself was.... well, I'd rather not say.

I love many of the primitive styles, and I have recordings of some of the old music. It's interesting how some of the early Americana music morphed into many different styles: various country modes, blue grass, blues, cajun, zydeco, and so forth.

Re ELH: Emmy Lou Harris is probably my favorite female country singer, although I do have an affinity for Kitty Wells. Harris has a voice styling like nobody else. She can slide from one note to another much like a steel guitar or a trombone. I've often listened to her Together Again song 5-6 times in a row, although I actually prefer hers and Buck Owens' classic rendition with the stunning steel break by the great Tom Brumley.

It might interest you to know that I rarely pay attention to, or even hear, lyrics. Most often I have only the faintest notion of the song's exposition, and that is typically due to its title. Probably the reason for that is that I was an instrumentalist, and wasn't too concerned about what a singer was singing, except in terms of HOW they were singing it. So most vocal music I like is because of its style, and/or the performer who's singing it.

Probably like everyone else, I went see Once Upon a Time in Hollywood last night.

I feel like there's a whole 1/3 of this movie we didn't see. I was expecting a juxtaposition of the American and Italian film industries - and how insane it was making movies in Italy during the late 60s. We sort of got that - but with a quick two minute voice over. You'd think for a genre of movies that Tarantino has been paying homage to since Pulp Fiction that he'd explore more of that, but alas.

I think this is far from the masterpiece that everyone is touting it to be, but this is clearly Tarantino's retirement/I'm old movie. It's basically a well funded nostalgia trip that's entertaining enough to overlook it's aimlessness.

The soundtrack is solid (as usual) and I could watch Damian Lewis do his Steve McQueen impression for an entire feature.

I liked this a lot, and then fell in love with it by the end.

It was shockingly non-violent for a nearly 3 hour film, and so much of it was very un-Tarantino (at least un-Tarantino post-Jackie Brown) - which was totally fine with me. It absolutely luxuriated in it's mythic 1969 story and world-building and I was all in for it. Brad Pitt stole the film, this is the absolute best he’s been since Fight Club. The tension building was super effective, and I appreciated how it wasn't completely dark or serious, it felt wholesome by the end, even a bit melancholy and sad (makes you ponder on what could’ve been). It kinda felt like a more darker and serious, grounded iteration of La La Land without any musical numbers (spoilers I guess if you expected any musical numbers?)

But by taking the Sharon Tate murder, which we dreaded coming, and flipping it on its head and making it Hollywood mythology, I think kept it from being too exploitative. Which it could have easily been had he decided to portray what actually happened. The midnight screening audience I attended absolutely lost it when Cliff was bashing one of the Manson killer's heads over and over.

A heartbreakingly beautiful film about family (as usual from Kore-eda - the master of family drama) and the tale of 2 brothers separated by 'divorce'. Lots of humour and touching moments.

The entire film is carried by the performances of the children. It is quite something how Kore-eda gets these kids to do these things on camera. Incredible. The film has magical moments and really captures the innocence and naivety of youth - but also has a pay off that shows how kids come to terms with reality. I may have shed a tear or 2 at the end. Probably a new entry in my top 50 films of all time.

You liked the film more than I did, Joao. To my taste the picture was even more boring and pointless than was Jarmusch's Paterson.

It was not void of pluses. The female characters were first rate, and provided some enjoyable vignettes. But Murray slept-walked through his part, with so many instances of sitting in silence that I couldn't believe he stayed awake. The few examples of his "dead pan" humor were swamped by the puzzling masking of much of his life. His character as presented could never have been a ladies' man. Years ago he was a "Don Juan". Now he is dumped by the current girlfriend. He may have a son. That's it. The minor interest in learning who his son might be is left to drift off with no denouement. The film could have ended in any number of reasonable ways. Jarmusch managed to avoid all of those..:)

The music was enjoyable, almost all of it from a album by "Ethio-jazz" ethno-music composer, Mulatu Astatke. In fact the album provided practically the entire music score. They saved some money there!

The drivers of the attraction to this film were Murray's reputation as a comedian, and Jarmusch's as a director. But neither must have worked too hard in this movie.

It always amazes me when a film or character attempts to be "hip" or interesting by simply being silent or unemotional. That approach may work 1 in 10 times. IMO this wasn't one of them.

Le Haine - 4/10
Pretty dumb. Punks acting like 5-year olds throughout the entire 97 minutes, which seems to be on a 5-minute loop.

Didn't you enjoy Cassell's performance? Didn't you enjoy that amazing dolly shot? Didn't you enjoy the whole disaffected youth portrayal ? It perfectly sums up the broken fringes of the Paris suburbs.

4 out of 10 is veryharsh. I'd give it 8 at least.
