The Conjuring 2 (2016)

Clearly worse than the first but still very decent modern horror. Too long, case has too much connections to Warrens and some scares seem too random and forced.

Huge Jackass Fan and love the show, only complaint is the film could've been longer. (Even though they probably cut down footage due to the MPAA jerks)

At Eternity's Gate (2018)

Willem Dafoe’s Vincent Van Gogh was the performance of 2018. The film itself was modest in scope, almost boutique in feel, which, added to the fact that there were no social justice or fashionable causes advocated, may have caused the Academy members to pass over this unique and striking performance.

Doc’s rating: 9/10

Funny, I had no idea Dafoe plays Van Gogh, nor that this film even existed. So I suppose I will copy you now and see this based on your recommendation.

The Houses October Built 2 (2017)

Recovering from the trauma of being kidnapped last Halloween by the Blue Skeleton, a group who take "extreme haunt" to another level head back out on the road to visit more haunted house attractions when signs of the Blue Skeleton start appearing again and a new terror begins

exactly what I wanted from a sequel to the first movie

Ghost Stories (2017)

Had been really looking forward to this after missing out on it in the cinemas. Has some quite effective jump scares, Martin Freeman was great as usual and I absolutely loved the ending. I usually like Paul Whitehouse but he was miscast here, I found his character annoying. Aside from the scare jumps, there wasn't anything remotely scary or disturbing which was a real disappointment. Overall this was quite a let down for me.

Was going to watch this one last night. I've had the disc for about two weeks just haven't gotten around to it. Heard some good things about it and I really enjoy a good ghost story so its kind of a bummer to hear most of it's scares are of the jump variety.

A one star movie that I will generously bump up to four because it's that bad. Gets the sex and nudity out of the way in the first 20 min. then it's just slow moving zombies attacking a house with a few people in it. Horribly, excellent dubbing and dialogue along the lines of Resident Evil 1 on PS1, creepiest "kid' in the world and it's gory in a Herschell Gordon Lewis way. Get some buddies and some drinks and have at it.

Early Summer - 6/10
The thing with Ozu, his characters are the same, some even have the same names and characteristics, which not only becomes boring after a while, but my perception of them is pre-conceived subconsciously perhaps. But with the other handful of Ozu movies, they were all "together" - nothing disjointed, and I felt this was. When I read that Setsuko was actually going to be married I thought "I gotta see this" and of course, the man has a son (so she can keep her eternal virgin status for Ozu?), and she agrees with the mother in a very flippant (but friendly) way, happenstance. I might want to watch this again in a while, because I also started losing attention. I don't even remember them meeting.

Fighting with my Family. Jack Lowden and Florence Pugh are very talented because they sold a fairly by the numbers biopic. Merchant's solo debut as a director demonstrates the man's promise though it doesn't quite hit the mark to make this a classic. 3.5

Alita Battle Angel (2019)
https://pixel.nymag.com/imgs/daily/vulture/2018/05/03/recaps/03-alita-battle-angel.w700.h467.jpg

Caught this movie again in theaters, its very rare for me to go to watch a movie in theaters more than once but since I want this story to continue so bad and I love its fictional universe I decided to try watching the movie in 3D this time.

I did not notice a lot of differences comparing the 3D and 2D, in both cases I was extremely impressed with the special effects and action scenes, as this movie is at the cutting edge of both. Overall I found it better the second time since I could focus notice the small details and got a better grasp of how this movie managed to compress so much plot points of the manga into 122 minutes. I think it would benefit immensely from a longer director's cut but one thing about this movie is that it is mainly a set up for a longer story instead of being an self enclosed story on its own. Despite its problems I think this movie is the best science fiction action movie to come out of Hollywood since The Matrix in 1999, that is, this is the best sci-fi action movie in 20 years. So I rate it highly at 4_5.

I think if they make good sequels to continue the story this movie has the potential to become the beginning of a new Star Wars or Lord of the Rings type of franchise. Thing is that its box office has not been the best performing, when I watched this time there was like 3 people in the theater.

Not always the biggest fan of Giallo, I wasn't sure going into this. I thought it was quite slow in parts, sometimes even pretty dull but I was surprised in that most of the acting was really really good. The kill scenes were excellent and pretty disturbing. It'll not get the highest rating from me but I would still recommend it and seems to be an important film of its genre.

5th Re-watch...One of the most deserving Best Picture winners ever...on my 50 favorite screenplays, this film came in at #2, on my list of 100 favorite supporting performances, Celeste Holm came in at #2, but the number one attraction here is the sparkling performance of Bette Davis, the best of her career, that should have won her the Oscar.

The Possession of Michael King (2014)

A pretty generic found footage movie and a pretty generic possession movie, they even managed to get in a head roll by the end and if you dislike jump scares don't go near this, they are excruciatingly loud and forceful, on one of them I involuntarily threw my earphones of my head which I have never done before and oh if you like reading reviews written by the directors mates, go over to IMDb, I'm actually serious, the guy is director writer actor etc it's almost predictable.. best possession film since The Exorcist my arse.

A Night in the Life of Jimmy Reardon (1988) dir William Richert

I had to rate this one again for the theatrical cut, as my previous review was of the cobbled together director's cut, which had me thinking that my childhood memory of this would match up to this recent viewing of the DC. It didn't.

The original wide release of this late 80's River Phoenix teen dramedy aims and misses almost on an astonishing level. The DC had mismatches, too, and still - it wasn't a very good movie. But there was a sentiment there.

Seeing the film with the Bill Conti tinged score (instead of original director's cut composer Elmer Bernstein) puts a very cheesy 80's synth score mixed with an almost karate kid vibe on top of this pared down mismatched sock of a movie.

Jimmy Reardon is a complete jerk-off creep. He is a womanizer, a spoiled and delusional sissy boy who thinks he's some great poet. Even though he is dished up some good revenge it still doesn;t matter because everything leading up to a justice is overshadowed by a dull and soulless identity crisis film. It's set in the 60's yet has a contempo score. It's about a sex starved HS grad, but it's unconvincing, this power he must have over females.

The family dynamic, and recinciliation are handled like total bookends, and whatever twist comes this way involving this "central theme" is repellent, as is the over sentimental ending that just feels wrong.

This film tries in it's director/writer's hands, but it just can't get it together. The theatrical cut is like salt on a wound, and probably the main reason (aside from being railroaded) why we don't see William Richert films anymore.

It's sad because the film wants to be good. It's based on the director's book which he adapted for the screen. I haven't read the book, but if it's 20% better than the movie I'm sure it'd still be kind of trashy and weird.

Photography, lighting and performances are all on point. A young Matthew Perry plays the best friend in an early role.

The Haunting(1963) 4

A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) 3

An interesting double bill, watched for the upcoming Horror Countdown. The Haunting had some clunky backstory/voiceover stuff but once it got going it was incredibly effective, I enjoyed all the symbolism and suggestion. I've been fairly terrified of watching NOES for years and years but finally got up the courage to watch it. It was all a bit more gross and hokey than actually scary in terms of tension and dread, although it had its moments. I think The Haunting was scarier in that sense even though only one person dies on screen. All the fountains of blood over the ceiling were a bit over the top. I really liked the music in NOES (although it was irritating that the sound effects were about twice as loud as the dialogue). I thought the ending was much less effective than the one in Carrie it was probably trying to emulate.

Leaving neverland

Watched this after having watched the documentary ‘abducted in plain sight’ where a peodophile/sick and evil man abducted a young girl numerous times but had also manipulated and groomed her family.

Michaels story is similar in that he groomed his victims parents to gain access. The victims tell a similar confused tale in which they were in love with their abuser and lied to protect him.

Leaving neverland is graphic in its verbal descriptions - it is at times sickening, saddening and strongly affecting of emotions. The two narrators, for whom are victims are handled emphatically. Most importantly - their story is believable. I believe them.

How I feel about Jackson has changed. Of course he’s always been seen to be an odd character and the rumours have followed him since when I can remember however being moved by his victims accounts following watching this story makes me despise the man.

This is an important film. One which explores fame, fortune, control, manipulation, grooming, sexual predators, deceptive appearances. It’s more than Michael Jackson - it’s a story about the world we live in.

https://www.thewrap.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/Brie-Larson-in-as-Captain-Marvel.jpg

Captain Marvel was released yesterday and I went to see it on the IMAX screen. The film is a bit of a mixed bag but overall I enjoyed it. The biggest strength the story has going for it is that rather than focus on the dull current Danvers series the filmmakers appropriated the original books concepts. The original concept of the book was that Mar-Vel was an alien living on Earth fighting a war and balancing their alliengence's to Earth and the Kree homeworld.

The Kree guard is led by Jude Law and features a band of warriors to varying degrees and powers as they battle the shapeshifting Skrulls led by Ben Mendelsohn. Sheninegans occur and she ends up in 1990's US where SHIELD's Samuel L Jackson and her end up working together as they are caught in this intergalactic battle. Oh and their is a cat named Goose and Danvers keeps seeing Annette Bennig in her head.

The film is sort of like a reverse Wonder Woman in the sense that the worst set pieces are in the beginning and then it gets progressively better. Nick Fury is a major figure in the film, this is practically an 80's buddy cop film and Jackson is very good. The characters are well defined to a point but here's the central fault in the film...it's Brie Larsen. I'm not going to pile onto to the Larsen backlash but you can't ignore that Danvers is smug and condescending throughout the film. Now most of the Marvel leads have a degree of smugness the difference is those characters are grounded with flaws and this film doesn't give Danvers any flaws. She's not broken like Doctor Strange or young like Spider-man or guilt-ridden like Tony Stark or a castout like Thor.

The other problem with the film is Lashana Lynch's character is basically just the black friend that reacts to everything and doesn't really do anything else. She pretty much just exists to be a mom and to show up in flashbacks. And while the film has a clear feminist agenda ultimately it fails women as the three male leads (Law, Mendlesohn, and Jackson) are all vastly superior characters that carry the film from being bleh to being a pretty good Marvel film.

Moving onto the films strengths, the 90's backdrop works really well. Anytime they end up picking up a piece of 90's nostalgia it ends up serving the plot. They also don't overdo it with the fashion which I appreciated. The film also does not have a villain problem Talos (Mendelsohn) is awesome his scenes are some of the best in the film. And while I can't express just how smug Danvers is her humor works at points, the final battle is pretty great and establishes what they were trying to do (though they did kind of fail at it).

At the end of the day the film is worth seeing
3.5 (though really it's more like 3.25

Van Gogh (1991) by Maurice Pialat

My fifth Pialat film and he seems to grow on me. In retrospect i gave him relatively poor ratings of the first films i saw by him back in 2014 with a rating of 3 for La Gueule ouverte (1974), but dont we always evolve as cinephiles and humans :)

Overall this was an enjoyable watch with a lot of everyday situations (situations of being), which seems relatively sparse in newer, modern films, which i personally find both interesting and meditative. Also the development of relations in those situations Van Gogh takes part of, seems interesting in relation to the trajectory of the film. On a personal level i have a keen interest in biopics depicting manic depression without being overtly stigmatizing.

Highly recommendable if you have a keen interest in the more non-commercial depictions of Van Gogh.

I needed to revisit for the horror countdown and I'm glad I did. It moves along quickly and it pretty much all works. I'm sure nostalgia now plays a big role for me as it has both what was cool and cheesy about the 80's. I needed something for my mood and this helped.

For me it's the difference between how I felt about it then and how I see it now - it reminds me that I am getting old. A younger person could see this and love it with no hang ups, but for some of the older crowd movies like this remind you of the ante being upped by comedy timing, pace, effects, music, etc, and how as cozy as nostalgia is, it's not as enriching as a movie on its own if you've been familiar with it, and no surprises are to be really had, except a realization that you've been watching it for 20 + yrs, and you feel like you need a heating pad. :D

A superb tale of love, kinship and what it means to be family. Morals are queried, and formalities are tested. Lily Franky and those 2 children are impeccable. After all the internet controversy I felt like I needed to watch this movie and I was pleasantly surprised.

She is kinda how Superman was supposed to be. In my opinion it was far better than any other Marvel movies I had watched (way better than the Avenger movies). Yes she has the personality of a plank of wood but that is how she is supposed to be: a stoic "Terminator" kind of character being the strongest hero in the universe. And yes, she is "overpowered" but the feeling of well done overpowered characters can be great if done right, she reminded reminded me about Goku when he became a supersayan for the first time, crushing all the opposition by harnessing their internal strength through focused intense determination do beat up the bad guys. She is the most badass superhero movie character I ever watched.

Only issue is how Avengers Endgame plot will work since she appears to be able to "solve" any villain super easily. I guess they could have solved Thanos in the last 30 second of this movie by just showing her blowing he up. Although it is true that after Infinity War Thanos basically attained his dream of killing half of the population of the universe so now the issue for Avengers Endgame is not to beat Thanos (well Thor kinda did that already in Endgame), the issue is how to reverse the damage he did and she didn't show any powers capable of solving this issue.

Not scary but it was good. The first of the three stories is the only one that had any real tension/ creepiness to it. Taken separately the stories aren't much but they do form a solid base for the ending.

I had heard that the story and characters were pretty silly (being kind) but it exceeded my expectations for how silly it is. Didn't like the story or the characters but it is absolutely stunning to look at. I actually thought of muting the movie and playing some nice, relaxing, classical music instead. Probably would've been better. That man-tank at the end whipping out a Ka-Bar though, that's some serious B-Movie brilliance.

I couldn't wait til it was over, just like "The Innocents" (I thought I recognized Deborah Kerr). Kinda empty, that there wasn't much in it that I could criticize. I tried watching it a year ago, and turned it off after 20 minutes.

First Man (2018) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1213641/)

Just because the subject matter of a movie is based on historically important events, it doesn't follow that the film making its self is any good. First Man takes real events that were rich in human drama and excitement and reduces them to a new level of shaky cam blandness.

First Man was directed, shot and written like a lower budget Showtime made for TV movie. The film making style jumps between hyper action shots done with tight close ups and overcooked sound editing, which then made it hard to know what was going on...despite the fact I already knew what was going on. I never felt any tension or realism during the action space scenes and that's a pity.

Then the movie's other filming shot trick was to do the quiet moments at home where nothing goes on, because it's amateurish filmed like someone went to another someone's house with their mobile phone and filmed people in 1960s garb doing much of nothing. Some connection to the people in the film would have been nice!. The characters come off as store front mannequins...what a poor script and poorly filmed. I wanted to shut this off after only 10 minutes...BUT...I stuck out the entire 2 hours 20 minutes of this boring retelling of one of 20th centuries most important moments. rating_2_5

Cool, I had pretty much a completely opposite reaction to First Man. I think it’s technically brilliant, riveting and was absolutely worth seeing in theaters. I’ve also found it to be a unique antithesis to Green Book and Bohemian Rhapsody, in regards to the controversies sorrounding those latter twos for their supposedly maligned representations of historical figures. In First Man I found a solemnity that’s rare in cinematic recountings of historical journeys paved with loss. It’s essentially using its dire depictions of the failures that preceded the Apollo 11 mission, the cost in lives, to earn itself a bit of historical speculation regarding Armstrong’s own stake in the mission’s success (which is apparently not all that speculative at all.)

It’s, in my mind, actually quite daring in its reframing of a defining human moment as a intimate act of remembrance.

[First Man]...I’m gonna watch it since I’m a huge fan of Gosling, but I’m aware of the lackluster reviews. Apollo 13 was a brilliant movie then & now.I'm a big fan of Gosling too. I will say he was a good choice for Neil Armstrong based on what I know of the real Armstrong, but the script didn't give him or Claire Foy (the Queen) many chances to shine.

... I think it’s technically brilliant, riveting and was absolutely worth seeing in theaters. I could see that a theater experience with a huge screen would be more impactful, especially the space and moon scenes. The moon scene looked good, even on my small screen, I'll give it that much. But I'd say it's like Gravity in that on the home TV it loses much eyeball appeal and not much in the script department.

I’ve also found it to be a unique antithesis to Green Book and Bohemian Rhapsody, in regards to the controversies sorrounding those latter twos for their supposedly maligned representations of historical figures.I'll be watching those soon, and I'll try to post my thoughts on them.

If you haven't seen the aforementioned Apollo 13 I highly recommend it, as well as the superb From the Earth to the Moon (TV Mini-Series 1998) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120570/)Anyone see that?

I, too, thought that First Man was rather brilliant technically. The story was a bit more interesting than I thought but definitely not the strongest aspect of the film despite a few good moments. Gosling was good imo. But yeah, technically is where it shined imo.

Oh, AND I loved that it didn’t glorify the flag placement on the moon and all that like some holy thing. I liked how the story about the man was more important. I mean, it’s called First Man and is a biopic if Armstrong and with a story rooted in his life and his dilemmas. People also just sometimes forget the human aspect behind placing that flag there. Most dumb Americans just wanna are an epic slow-no shot of Armstrong placing the flag to some epic Hans Zimmer-ish music. Yay patriotism! I’m glad Chazelle didn’t go in that route....

I didn't care for this when I first saw it a few years ago. I've been meaning to try it again and figured now was the right time with the upcoming horror countdown. This time I loved it, enough to make my horror list if I considered it horror, but I don't. It's a wacky story, yet a story I've seen a few times before. This movie just executes it very well and is exceptional from a technical and acting standpoint.

Costume drama doesn't normally interest me, but I enjoyed the director's Dogtooth, The Lobster, and The Killing of a Sacred Deer. From a casual perspective as I know hardly enough of any of the comics' storylines, I thought this movie turned out pretty well. The solid performances out of Samuel Jackson and Jude Law were expected, and I thought Brie Larson was terrific. It did a couple things to set up Endgame as well, which is probably the main reason I saw it. The main drawbacks I had would probably revolve around some of the action/fight sequences, as I thought some were a bit too long and dizzying.

Finding Steve McQueen (Mark Steven Johnson, 2019): His first directorial film since 2013's Hunting Season, Mark Steven Johnson depicts the 1972 United California bank heist, hailed as one of the biggest heists in American history. Travis Fimmel plays Harry Barber, a part of the gang responsible who has an obsession with Steve McQueen and his turbulent spiral from the heist to his relationship with a widow, played by fellow Australian Rachael Taylor. William Fichtner, Forest Whitaker, and Lily Rabe are great in their roles as well as Louis Lombardi and Rhys Coiro, who add some comic relief to the film along with Fichtner's heist leader.

Stigma (1977) – 5/10

I would say this is horror rather than a ghost story. The idea itself is strong but I found the inconsistency of the blood a weakness – several times it appears with no visible injury underneath; in the denouement this changes to minute droplets seeping through the skin. You could say that this is the curse gradually affecting the physical body of its victim in stages (maybe eventually a stab wound would manifest, perfectly replicating the human sacrifice under the stone?). This is where the psychological bent of earlier M. R. James adaptations was preferable and perhaps Stigma would have been more successful had they stuck to that style even more.

The direction's good and I think Kate Binchy was really good. The upper middle classness was a bit hard work but fair enough, they're a well-to-do family who can afford diggers to move a stone :). I thought the workman jumping straight into what was clearly a burial site – and ultimately a murder scene – and picking up the skull really quite ridiculous.

I usually LOVE movies like these, but Polanski ruined it by making a movie (and characters) drunk before anyone had a drink. It felt a little like taking the great "Knife in the Water" and putting a knife through it with sham.

The Old Man & the Gun (2018) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2837574/)

Bob's last movie...Redford announced he would retire from acting after The Old Man & The Gun. And it's a nice send off too, for the veteran actor who started out in 1960 and has starred in many beloved films.

There's a segment in the movie where Redford's character Forest Tucker who's a life long gentleman bank robber, reflects back on his early days of robbery. The film then shows us photos and a film clip of a very young Robert Redford, which works for the story and as a tribute to Robert Redford himself. Those flash back photos were quite touching, while being understated and within the bounds of the story. So kudos to the film for that!

I liked the movie and it's slow paced flow. Nothing overly exciting happens. No big action or chase scenes to speak of, thank goodness. Mostly it's just Bob doing what he does best, being Redford and showing us his quiet understated charm. He's paired up with Sissy Spacek in a subdued and low keyed romance story line. Actually it's more like a friendship about two people getting to know one another, with one of them being a notorious bank robber!

Based on a 'mostly true story', The Old Man and the Gun is worth watching on a quiet Sunday evening.

That list would go on for at least the entire duration of the film. Were you even able to focus? :p

More than you'd think, though it was hard not to think about how everyone was losing their sh*t over Hereditary last year when this has existed for fifty years. Speaking of cult-themed horrors from fifty years ago...

Good recommendation! Watched it last night, and enjoyed it as much as anything I've seen in the past year! I kept shaking my head that these 3 were getting away with these incredible projects. And there were a bunch of laugh out loud moments as well. "Tarzan" is a riot. It's hard to imagine that anyone wouldn't like this first rate absorbing documentary. Cheers.

This is up there with my favourite Wilder. Has so much to it, with such witty dialogue and a great script, all the major characters perform brilliantly. Marlene Dietrich slightly steals the show for me from Jean Arthur but seriously, this film had everything.

This is the first James Dean movie I've ever watched and it was really good. Obviously has that "old" acting feel which may be a turnoff to some but once you get used to it it's kind of eh, ok . Jo Van Fleet as Kate was excellent. Thought she stole every scene she was in.

As far as women in prison films go this is pretty standard fare. Innocent girl ends up prison with nasty warden and an inmate who wants to "do her in." Cliques form and then all hell breaks loose. If you've ever seen a WiP film you know what to expect. Not as good as the classics like Big Bird Cage or as over the top campy as Reform School Girls but it's better than a lot of 'em.

Tokyo Idols (2017)

http://nekopop.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/NekoPOP-Tokyo-Idols-film-review-2.jpg

It is an exercise of bigotry of the lowest caliber. This "documentary" portrays a facet of Japanese culture as if it were some kind of disturbing activity that should not exist. Of course, it has zero objectivity and presents the concept of idol from a consistently condescending perspective. I think about this documentary as analogous to the perspective of racist Europeans when they were describing primitive African tribes: a completely arrogant perspective that sees its subject as something disgusting.

In cinematic terms is very mediocre: it feels like a poorly edited YouTube video rather than a documentary and it only interviews 2 people 90% of the time: one idol and one of her fans, as if a sample of 2 people (which might be paid artists from all I know) could describe the millions of people who participate in idol culture. Essentially a piece of ethnocentric propaganda that is an insult of the whole subculture.

The Ice House (1978) – 5.5/10

I said a few posts back that Stigma, which preceded this film in the Ghost Story for Christmas series, wasn't a ghost story, but horror. This feels barely like horror and more of a 'tale of unease', but unlike Stigma it sensibly doesn't begin with the title card "A Ghost Story" ;).

A very peculiar watch. I decided that the weird behaviour of the spa owners was better suited to a period piece, possibly Edwardian, but that, in what was then modern day, it was hard to accept the other characters' awareness of this intimidating eccentricity and tolerating it. There's a mild hint of hypnotism or a kind of lotus-eaters effect but not enough to mitigate this issue.

I was racking my brain to remember where I'd seen Geoffrey Burridge before and this morning it came to me that he'd been the villain Dorian in the Blake's 7 episode Rescue. Elizabeth Romilly stood out the most because of her more layered character – she's a little bit reminiscent of Amanda Donohoe in The Lair of the White Worm: seductive and revelling in her own corruption.

Climax, solid 8/10. It's a hard movie to describe my emotions about, but Noe's camerawork and the insane performances from the dancers really put you in the environment, making me feel like I was a part of the nightmares happening on screen. Surprisingly tame for it's subject matter, as most was implied rather than shown, which is something I enjoyed (if that's the right word in this situation) as it left the horrors in your head instead of showing it, making you know it's faked, if you get my drift. Not as crazy and good as Enter the Void imo, but Climax is still a solid trip.

The Big Clock (1948)

An absorbing noir starring Ray Milland, Charles Laughton, and Maureen O'Sullivan. Laughton impresses with another unique role which dominates the screen whenever he's present. Milland slightly over-acts, but the writing carries this interesting plot through to the end. O'Sullivan hadn't taken a role in 5 years, so it was enjoyable to watch her return to the big screen.

There's a delightful part by Elsa Lanchester, playing a ditzy artist, and an interesting early role for Harry Morgan who plays an enforcer who never speaks.

Gets better and better with repeated viewings. Because I stop paying attention to its flaws and instead focus on its good parts. Has some of the best action scenes ever made combined with the best of the best in especial effects. :D

Only time will tell if it is a classic but right now I place it among Blade Runner and The Matrix in terms of science fiction movies.

I'm willing to move this rating up or down based on discussing this movie, because I don't know how to fully explain what I just saw.... I'm usually not into alien invasion type movies, but this one looked like it would be smarter than most. The very first scene had me locked in, and the movie progressed along at a respectable place. But as the end approached, it felt incomplete, and the final twist was hardly satisfying. I have to think on this one a bit more...

https://i.imgur.com/1vXZTD8.jpg
An unconventional and original approach to a samurai movie. The tone of the film switches often, from scenes with lightning-fast and perfectly executed short blade and samurai sword fight choreography, to slow paced serious art-house drama, comedy, music and even dancing. Kitano also delivers an excellent charismatic bad-ass performance, conveying emotions without the use of his eyes, most impressive.

Rough and gritty look at bored teenagers who are locked in a drab northern French town (Bruno Dumonts speciality)...the arrival of an Asian fellow sets off many underlying predjudices but, as usual with Dumont, its the mundane and workaday that gets his point across. The group of actors do very well and it is a fine linear storyline with his characteristic plotting. Rough around the edges but no worse off for that.

FREE SOLO

https://d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net/wp/wp-content/images/Free-Solo-700x300.jpg

One of the greatest human feats ever.
One man, one mountain, one goal and one mistake between the ultimate life and the certain death...

Sure, there wasn’t elaborate depth or a wide perspective to this documentary but all I really wanted was height, so it’s all good. But I did get a lot more than that actually. Alex is a deeply fascinating human being. The way he thinks, the way he acts and the way he simply... is. I found it very intriguing to see him communicate with people or compile his thought process into words; it’s just not how the norm would do or act. But what he misses that we got he makes up for in what we will never get. What he accomplishes here is just monumental. When he reached the peak of El Capitan, he also reached the peak of the human capability... for now.

Those last 30-20 minutes are absolutely nerve-wrecking, sweat-inducing and utterly adrenaline-fueled. My body and senses wanted to look away but I wanted to keep watching every bit of this madness. I wasn’t even up there with him and I felt the wind in my stomach. The beautiful cinematography really makes you feel like you are right there and is half or more of the experience for sure. The immense amount of depth in the picture lets you be completely immersed in what is happening on screen... and beyond.

What more can I say? Nothing can really compare to seeing a human being on the side of a mountain 1000 meters up in the air with nothing but a t-shirt, some trousers, climbing shoes and a bag of white powder that surprisingly isn’t cocaine. This man is insane. In control or simply lucky. A daredevil or a dumb bloke... or both. I’m forever impressed no matter what though. And frightened beyond compare.

Why isn’t this categorized as horror again?

Really good; menacing. Hopefully I'll read it too one day :). My strongest connection with Charles Dickens has always been with A Christmas Carol (which I have read) and I could hear similar turns of phrase here in the dialogue. I can understand why in Doctor Who Mark Gatiss had the Doctor say – to Dickens himself – that this was "the best ghost story ever written".

A video nasty and this was one of the nastier exploitation movies I've seen in awhile. There is a little something here to offend just about anybody. A guy has his girlfriend seduce "sinners" on a Greek isle, he takes pics of them committing the sin, then they kill the sinner. Pretty straight forward, pretty simple premise but this gets icky fast. It's not gory at all, just sick.

Mary Shelley (2017) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3906082/)

Directed by Saudi Arabia's first female director, Haifaa al-Mansour. Her first feature film was 2012's Wadjda (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2258858/?ref_=nm_flmg_dr_5). This time around she tackles the story of Mary Shelley who lived a tumultuous life and at a very young age penned the Gothic novel Frankenstein.

As much as I appreciated the subject matter, the film fell flat when delving into the lives of these radical thinkers of the 19th century. I felt like I was watching actors do a BBC made for TV show. That's not a bad thing, it just missed it's mark and had little depth of soul...and depth of soul is what Mary Shelley's life's story and novel are about.

IMO the actors for the most part were miscast, I just didn't believe Elle Fanning had the inner flame and drive to do the things Mary Shelley did. Nor did the director take us on a personal journey of exploration, it was more show and tell.

The Panama Papers (2018)

Watched The Panama Papers last night. Alex Winter (of Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure fame) is a good documentarian, e.g. his Deep Web. The production of this feature as a whole is top tier. Early on my suspicions were raised when they kept referring to "income inequality"; and with statements like, "The job of a journalist is to seek justice" (which it is not). Thankfully they mostly stayed clear of the social justice hokum, and pretty much kept to the financial facts and the description of the group of international journalists' efforts. The underlying editorial position was pretty clear though. IMO the journalists weren't so much the heroes as was the whistle blower.

The Panama Papers incident was a true international barn burner from 2016, with several heads of state losing their jobs, and at least one participant who was allegedly murdered. The conduit, Panamanian legal and accounting firm Mossack Fonseca, of course went belly-up.

They did a very nice job of producing a fascinating documentary which, apart from the international scandal, could have been a pretty dry financial tale.

Doc's rating: 7/10

P.S.Winter has a Frank Zappa feature documentary due to come out in early 2020.

For the sake of curiosity I watched this thing. It's a crappy science fiction movie: mediocre special effects, cardboard sets, cringe inducing writing and TV quality direction. It claims to be based on Ghost in the Shell, the manga, but in actuality the only things it shares with it are the names of some characters and that it features cyborgs. By the way, in this movie the characters are very, very stupid, it is clear from the movie's writing that the people who made this do not understand the basic thematic concepts of the manga or the classic Oshii's movie. Basically, the manga exposes the concept that body and soul are separate through the inner struggles of people whose physical bodies were replaced. Instead the plot of this movie is more like a poorly executed version of Robocop.

While most of it was mediocre some parts of the movie were so bad that I almost felt painful watching it. Rating 3.5/10.
