Probably get slaughtered for this but I just didn't find this funny. I love most of Allen's work but this just didn't fit my taste.

Stephen King's novel The Shining was heavily influenced by this movie and I can see why. The Shining was much better, though.

Dr. Strangelove or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)
https://i.imgur.com/Vu5Yj0a.jpg?1
This is Kubrick's view of our specie, not a time in history but the entire history. It is a satire during a period of paranoia about the nuclear capabilities of a single bomb around the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis. The darker picture is always the correct one, we realize that when we look at the history of civilization, it is a repetition of the same greed, bloodshed, pride. This film depicts those characteristics in such a way that I don't believe any other movie ever did, or ever will. There is a saying: Is with a joke that great truths are told , I think that's what Kubrick did. George C. Scott made the performance of a life time, that scene with the plane shows exactly the pride over the instinct of survival. This movie is too good to be true, is humanity looking in a mirror.

Langs first film in America which draws on his succes with M from 1931 and deals with similar reflections on mob mentality. Quite good, but not among his best.

Way over the top even for a revenge film and filled to the brim with ridiculousness, might be fun for teens or twenty year olds with some alcohol on the side.

PHANTOM THREAD (2017)
http://www.mrwillwong.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Phantom-Thread.jpg
A movie about the true meaning of love, love is surrender, so we say: fall in love, because we give ourselves, we drop our wall to the intimate, this is a movie about a man's difficulty of breaking the chains to a romantic journey because of his inability to conciliate with the strict protocol of a creative journey, battling to "break a curse", like accepting the needing a motherly side, when is sick, debilitated he embraces that childish remembrance. Part of the reason for the major dislike for this movie was probably the use of silence & long takes, I believe that was Paul Thomas Anderson way of evoking dramatic effects and more significant dialogue - short and sweet. I don't imagine this movie being made another way.

Mrs. Claus (Troy Escamilla, 2018): Take Silent Night Deadly Night and Black Christmas with a dash of Texas Chainsaw Massacre (in terms of the killer's look) and you have this Yuletide horror film. Predictable with a few twists and 80's style slasher kills.

Imagine being Arnold in that scene and having to be all like "damn, Jamie Curtis, you f*ckin' fine, all sexy with your tight body and horrific androgynous monster face. I would totally have sex with you, both my character and the real me” (when all he really wants to do is f*ck another 16 year old in his dressing room.)

Like, seriously. Imagine having to be Arnold, and not only sit in that chair while Jamie Lee Curtis flaunts her disgusting body in front of you; the favorable lighting barely concealing her stretch marks and leathery skin; and you just sit there, take after take, hour after hour--while she perfected that dance. Not only having to tolerate her monstrous f*cking visage but her haughty attitude, as everyone on set tells her she's “STILL GOT IT”, and “DAMN, JAMIE LEE CURTIS LOOKS LIKE THAT???”

Because they're not the ones who have to sit there and watch her mannish f*cking gremlin face contort into types of grimaces that you didn't even know existed before that day. You've been f*cking nothing but a healthy diet of blondes and supermodels, and later alleged rape victims for your ENTIRE CAREER, coming straight out of the boonies in Austria. You've never even seen anything this f*cking disgusting before, and now you swear that you can taste the sweat that's breaking out on her dimpled stomach as she sucks it, writhing it, suggestively at you, smugly assured that you are enjoying the opportunity to get paid to sit there and revel in her "statuesque" (for that is what she calls herself) "beauty". The beauty she worked so hard for with personal trainers for months. And then the director calls for another take, and you know you could kill every single person in this room before the studio security could put you down... but you sit there and endure, because you're f*cking Arnold. You're not going to lose your future political career over this. Just bear it. Hide your face and bear it.

Superman II

Very cringey for me today as an adult but the magic is still in there somewhere. Lester brought some great stuff to the theatrical, stuff that stayed with me, and Donner's action sequences are off the chain. Very tight gunplay and ruckus at the white house.

Story-wise it jumbles itself depending on whose version you adhere to..but as a companion to each other, any version of S2 is good stuff. It's just that it's corny and makes your jaw bone hurt sometimes.

Dr. Strangelove or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)

My favorite part, depressingly, is the use of Vera Lynn at the end. I can’t think of any other movie, off the top of my head, that features such a blatant act of defiance towards every point illustrated in the work it inhabits and attempted reaffirmation from the artist himself. Stan, like many viewers, laughed at a vision of oblivion only to then find himself staring helplessly at the wall and decided “nah, that’s no way to end a movie.”

Space Odyssey feels like a necessity afterwards.

Yes I have. I have always been a fan of Dick Maas' films so Sint was an easy one that I had to watch. Huub Stapel was one of my favorite Dutch actors after seeing both The Lift and Amsterdamned. It was great to see him in a different kind of role for once as the titular Sint.

Anyone who likes giallo and perhaps to capitalize on Suspiria will truly like this homage with something more to offer. Great killing scenes, really good performances from leads Kendra Carelli and Debbie Rochon (who goes against her scream queen type in a very good straight role) and a twist that even surprised me.

A Independent movie about two suicidal handicaps who fond in heroin a good escape to keep on living. Is the most existentialistic movie I've ever remember seeing, this tops Charlie Kaufman existentialism any day of the week. If you don't watch movies very often (like those who rated this movie on IMDb), which I don't believe it's the case, you might end up worshiping this movie. I don't like movies where I see the button: "Get emotional".

Like with other Rosselini/Bergman movies, there's always a hole, something missing. Same with this movie. I read the IMDB one-liner, "A wealthy woman becomes obsessed with humanitarianism when her young son dies after attempting suicide." and I thought with a leading lady like Ingrid Bergman, and a neo-realistic director, who did move away from that, but nonetheless, you know he's more than able. I liked this movie, the stories alone make it good, so I expected better. The acting was also really bad outside of Bergman, and with the co-production and all the dubbing, I expected the normal lack of rhythm - I ha no idea Giulieta Masina was in this, in some crazy US accent. But during one of the most climactic moment, the acting didn't even match the situation.

Watched this last night and was taken aback by just how visceral it was after reading it was a low-budget shocker. There's no fat on this at all and it's genuinely disquieting. Well written, acted, filmed and edited. Hard to fault. Sound rattles a wee bit so 9/10.

This was my favorite movie since I first saw it, I was twelve-years-old. I could say this movie was the *click* that made me think about the meaning behind things, our role in this world, made me a questioner, made me also a little bit more negative about our specie in general. It's a very powerful movie and will always be recorded in my memory. It shows humanity quest for total dominance over everything we touch and see, it questions our real needs, our though values, our illusion of freedom and our ambitious search for an idea of success. It's a quest to learn the true history and nature of humankind. Without any question the most under-rated movie I've ever saw, it's also in my opinion Anthony Hopkins best performance.

Probably get slaughtered for this but I just didn't find this funny. I love most of Allen's work but this just didn't fit my taste.

I watched this movie after having already seen the classic Allen movies. I found out then, that Allen was stand uper and I think in this movie is this kind of humour. I can't say I wasn't laughing couple times, but I definitively prefer his subsequent films.

Un-inventive, dull comedy that raised too few chuckles and was very flat overall. Sometimes I wonder who "options" these type of films, so stuck together and contrived it just became tedious. I might be the wrong demographic I suppose. 3/10

It was great seeing it in the theater. It's my second favorite Miyazaki film, just behind Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, and my favorite film produced under the Ghibli banner, so it goes without saying that it was a pretty big deal. I've consistently found it a fun and exciting film when watching it on Blu-ray and it didn't disappoint on the big screen at all, either. It looked to be the same master as the Blu-ray and this isn't a bad thing, the animation and colors still looking better than ever. This screening also proved no less satisfying on the audio end. From Joe Hisaishi's magnificent expanded musical score, which he made just for the film's excellent English dub, opening over the Ghibli logo to Azumi Inoue's Carrying You playing over the closing credits, it was pure unadulterated sonic bliss, every instrument distinctly clear and audible. Sound effects, especially explosions and gunshots were also nice and loud. Thankfully, the excellent voice acting performances by Anna Paquin as Sheeta, James Van Der Beek as Pazu, Cloris Leachman as Dola and Mark Hamill as Muska, and the supporting cast, weren't drowned out by all of this. It only helps the performances in question that the dub script is completely natural. Miyazaki's story is a great one, flawlessly mixing timeless themes of compassion, love, friendship, old wounds being healed, and people meaning a lot more than material things with classic adventure elements. As Sheeta tells Muska, whose mind has clearly been seared with a hot iron, "A king without compassion does not deserve a kingdom," and "No matter how many weapons you have, no matter how great your technology might be, the world cannot live without love." So what is to be expected of a film that so deftly weaves together an adventurous tone, great story, likable characters, flawless acting, heart, timeless themes, a wonderful musical score and spectacular animation? Well, I don't know if my words can do it justice but that's not going to stop me from trying. Castle in the Sky is one of the most fun, exciting and emotionally satisfying films I've ever had the privilege of seeing, anime or otherwise, and one I find consistently rewarding; seeing it in the theater is something I'll never forget. Yep, today was a pretty good day.

Santa's Summer House (David DeCoteau aka Mary Crawford, 2012): Take action stars Gary Daniels, Kathy Long, Daniel Bernhardt, Cynthia Rothrock, and Chris Mitchum and put them in a family film full of both emotional drama and comic antics with a feel-good message and this is the result. Mitchum is Santa himself, taking a summer vacation with Rothrock as his wife. Santa causes a fog to bring in a workaholic couple and their teenage son, two sisters who are at odds, and a self-absorbed rocket scientist to stay the weekend at his summer home with him and his wife. Some tense moments, but there is a nice little twist that results in the feel good moment that almost made me shed a tear. Yes, the fact these action stars are in the film and story may seem farfetched, but it was better than expected.

Uneven though I dislike Westerns usually. Didn’t like Tim Blake Nelson’s segment (singing cowboy - oof!). Didn’t watch James Franco’s segment completely. Loved Zoe Kazan’s segment, which made the entire movie for me. Really good. Liam Neeson’s segment so very weird. Brendan Gleeson’s segment good though I believe there was a deeper meaning that went over my head. Tom Waits’s segment excellent too. Would never want to watch this again.

You know how when you have the DVD in, before you press play, and it shows very short clips from the movie? My wife asked if that was the movie we were watching. I said yes. She said "oh shlt". She usually doesn't watch these kinds of movies, but she watched the whole thing. She didn't exactly like it, but she thought it was kind of interesting. That's how I feel about most movies from director Michael Haneke. I thought this particular movie was very Bergmanesque, and while pretty good for a Haneke movie, it would have been below average for a Bergman movie. The only thing I really didn't like was how it looked. I think having it in black and white was a great decision, but I thought it looked very basic and plain, especially the outdoor scenes. It really bothered me as it seemed to be missing character because of it.

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (Coen Brothers, 2018) 3.5

A real treat - I didn't know much about this or realise it was out so soon until I spotted it on Netflix the other night, but stuck it on as soon as I saw it. Its got everything that I love about the Coen Brothers, perfectly capturing the dark nature of human beings. It's very brutal and dark at times, is filled with glorious little moments that make you laugh or smile, and in places its really moving and powerful. I absolutely loved the opening segment and would have happily watched a film just about Buster Scruggs, that and "The Gal who got rattled" were my favourite segments.

Hail, Caesar! (Coen Brothers, 2016) 3.5

Stuck this on immediately afterwards as I wanted my brother to watch it. Second time I've seen it and still think it's a great film. The storyline reminds me of old film noirs where the plot plays second fiddle to fascinating little characters wondering around Los Angeles, in particular films like The Long Goodbye or Kiss Me Deadly. Some hilarious performances in it too and the movie set pieces are really fun.

I also saw The Fugitive on TV recently too, did not think much of it. Very forgettable with nothing of note to write about film wise.

I am going to post my first ever movie review. I hope that I'm not breaking any rules by posting it here. It is also the last movie I have seen. OK. Here goes:

A MILLION WAYS TO DIE IN THE WEST (2014)

"It's really big. Yes. You're huge!. No. I meant you."

I was very surprised to learn this movie was made in 2014 because I had never heard of it before seeing it just now.

I was also surprised to learn it got a rating at IMDB of 6.1. This film was written and directed by Seth MacFarlane (who was the show runner of "Family Guy"). Many Family Guy episodes were really hysterical and I would have expected that any of his solo projects would have garnered a much higher rating.

On the IMDB boards, 7.0 out of 10 is an average rating and I usually agree with the ratings they publish. So I was not expecting this movie to be excellent. I was surprised because I would have expected any solo project from MacFarlane would have gotten a rating of at least 7.5 or higher.

The movie began in a fairly typical way. Many of the early laughs were cheap and kind of expected.

By the way, although this movie is rated as a comedy, it is most definitely something you would not want to see with your children (assuming you have any). Much of the language and many of the situations here are most definitely "adult".

As the movie unfolded, my reaction remained kind of "Ho Hum". It was OK. But definitely pretty much "average".

But as it proceeded, I found myself enjoying it more and more all the time. My affection for this film just kept on building until by the end of the movie, I must say that I came away thinking it was worthy of a much higher rating. I'm still not certain why I enjoyed it so much. Perhaps it was because MacFarlane seemed to be poking fun at the entire genre of Westerns as well as Comedies and perhaps several others as well.

I would most definitely recommend that anyone who enjoys comedies see this film. It may appear to be a dumb comedy designed for very young audiences. But it is actually a very "smart" film. At this moment, I really feel a strong desire to turn off my computer and go watch it again. I usually only want to see a movie for a second time after several weeks or months have passed. But I am remembering this film as very "smart" and definitely worth seeing again and maybe again after that.

Now for a few random remarks.

Giovanni Ribisi played a small part in this film. I like Ribisi very much and I've always enjoyed almost all of his performances. I must say that I think he was pretty much wasted in this role. He has many strong talents, but they were just not needed here. Any one of a hundred other actors could have played this part and not very much in the way of talent was ever required. I got the impression that perhaps Ribisi was cast in this film because someone just admired his work or maybe because he was friends with someone involved in casting - maybe even MacFarlane. I don't recall any projects in which the two worked together. But if I wrote and directed a film, I would almost certainly jump at the chance to cast Ribisi.

Two of the female leads were Amanda Seyfried and Charlize Theron. I have to say that Theron was most definitely the star of this movie. Actually, that may not be quite true. The biggest star of this movie was MacFarlane's talent for writing and directing. He did a great job in both departments. He also turned in a great understated performance in a comedy in which he could have easily "stolen the show". But he was very generous in the way he gave his co-stars the opportunity to take away most of the laughs.

There are a few shots in this movie that I predict you will never forget. Among these are: Flying Fish, Tumbling Horses, Sheep on Stilts and others.

Liam Neeson also turns in an excellent performance in a comparatively small role. I've never seen him before as a truly evil villian and he was delicious. In addition to those actors I've already mentioned (MacFarlane, Theron, Seyfried, Ribisi and Neeson), there are a few other excellent actors involved. These include Sarah Silverman in a most memorable performance as a whore with a very likeable personality and Gilbert Gottfried who played a small cameo as Abraham Lincon. I was surprised at the appearance of Alex Borstein. I suppose I should not have been surprised since the last time I saw her was about 15 years ago on Mad TV. Of course this is now 15 years later and she most definitely appears to be 15 years older. I don't know why I'm so surprised. The best explanation may be that I'm just stupid. I don't know why I would have expected anything different.

She most definitley appeared to have aged every single year of those 15 years. Maybe my expectations were unrealistic. Or maybe I have somewhat dumbass expectations when it comes to women in films showing their age (it truly feels like that may be true). I am left wondering why Borstein would have taken on this role because it was really a very tiny role and Alex has a truly massive amount of talent. Perhaps I'm just being foolish and/or unrealistic. I mean, what did I expect she would look like 15 years later? She is now 50 years old and she looks every inch of that. I best stop writing now because I'm feeling pretty stupid at the moment. I truly have no idea what I'm trying to say. I will just stop by saying I've always admired her talent. She is massively talented and it's a shame that women seem to get the "short end of the stick" when being judged because it seems to me that aging impacts women much more so than men and women are often judged more harshly when they age. I know that is just so wrong and so stupid. After all, what would anyone have the right to expect? She is 50 years old now. Why am I surprised she no longer looks like a woman in her twenties? I'm feeling quite embarrassed at my own lack of sensitivity on this subject. I just wish I knew how to handle this better. But I obviously do not.

Bottom Line? This is a very funny movie and if you are ever looking for some escapism and some laughs, do yourself a favor and see this one. You will laugh. I promise.

Thanks. After seeing your high score, I had to see it, since I noticed years ago we have mutual taste. Interesting this was also released the same year as "The Tenant", but this is much better.

I loved a few minor parts, too.. After he asks if there were any calls for him at the restaurant, an employee says "He was on the phone... or standing", which was similar to Georges, the newspaper vendor. Delon asks him to call his name so he would stop following him. "I don't know his name" (identity again).

REQUIEM FOR THE AMERICAN DREAM (2015)
https://pmcvariety.files.wordpress.com/2016/03/requiem.jpg?w=1000&h=563&crop=1
Noam Chomsky, considered one of the most influential intellectuals of our time, describes the systems (Neoliberalism, ect) that have led to financial inequality, and the current concentration of wealth and power. I've followed Chomsky ideas some years ago, I eventually ended up not really caring much after a while, guess I fond some hypocrisy on fighting things which I also take advantage of. If we realize that things we take for granted are easily available much due to the fact they caused great pain and suffering to someone else on the other side of the planet maybe we would either be unhappy or give them more value. I think this documentary shows how Trump got elected: overpopulated planet + advertising industries directing people to the superficial things of life = consumerism = more demand = competition among the working class = cheap labor = uncontrolled competition between the minorities = xenophobia = extremism = hate. And while minorities are fighting each other they don't fight who created that, the owners of society, the masters of mankind that sell you the product that you produced at an insanely superior price. This documentary is a good perspective about today's systems.

If you look a little closer though you'll find out those trash cans are actually popcorn boxes ;) This post by Miss V. shows you how to add them to your reviews if you wish.

Sorry. I had to change your link because I'm not permitted to post links until I've made 25 posts.

Popcorn boxes? Oh my. How embarrassing. Still, I was wondering why trash cans were used.

Oh gosh. It felt like a bad version of Deathly Hallows Part 1. I mean, it's extremely well-shot, but it's clear Rowling needs help with these scripts. So much exposition. Still kept my attention throughout though, I think mostly because I'm a huge fan of the universe.

I saw an earlier movie with Patrick Dewaure which reminded me of Buffalo '66, and Vincent Gallo. Then I see this... A guy who gets out of prison.... The first thing I did was to look him up, thinking "He's probably dead" and come to see he did kill himself at the age of 35. Damn good actor.

Noroît (1976, Jacques Rivette)
3-

Another enigmatic, intellectually demanding piece of postmodern, experimental filmmaking from Rivette - temporally and spatially unspecific, very 'meta' in terms of narrative, very improvisational, but also rather frustrating in its impenetrability. The cinematography, location scenery, use of color and costumes were beautiful, almost magical at times, but I just had a really hard time getting into the story. Rivette's style is a tough nut to crack, for sure, and definitely an acquired taste.

This is my second Rivette, after "Celine and Julie...", and I enjoyed the latter a lot more - in fact, I thought that movie was a flat-out masterpiece.

What an unbelievable piece of filmmaking. I loved the psychedelic feel to it, even though it didn't really strike me as Welles-esque, likewise the sex scene which was probably my favourite bit in the whole film. Lastly, Huston was magnificent as Hannaford, its just a pity we didn't see him and Orson together.

I love director Joe D'Amato even if he never made a good movie. He's a master of the seedy and sleazy. In this movie a killer(the great George Eastman) kills tourists on a scenic island. Much of it is pretty dull except for a few stand out scenes, one of which I'll describe by stealing from IMDb- "a pregnant woman is attacked by the monster who puts his hand up her dress and pulls her unborn fetus out of her vagina and takes a bite out of it." I think I did that once in my drinking days.

I lived in one of these projects in what was then the #1 most dangerous city in the US... I hope I kept an on-going journal, but was remembering similar things (drugs, hookers, death, etc) and the people I interacted with. The biggest problem I had was all the back and forth walking past my door (very light sleeper) and the 3:30am knock on your door (total stranger) asking for a ride so she can pick up her kids. Gosh, I can think of a dozen of these crazy stories. Hahaha!

http://www.cinestan.be/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/Manilla.jpg

I watched this after loving Insiang, which is another movie from director Lino Brocka. A young man from a poor fishing village goes to Manila to search for his long time girlfriend. She went there with a woman who came to the village looking for pretty girls with promises of good factory work and schooling. Obviously that woman was up to no good. The young man searching goes from misery to hell, and the movie is one tragedy after another. It's very bleak and heartbreaking, and it's authenticity off the charts.

Rivette mixes fantasy, mystery and noir in this sensuous, mesmeric charade of a film, like only he can. Great cast (Juliet Berto and Bulle Ogier are gorgeous here), amazing atmosphere, and (unlike in the case of Noroît) a story that's actually interesting to follow.

I wish I could rate this higher because it was definitely worth watching, but I'm still not sure if I understand the intent. It has a good story with satirical elements, but the final act was pure satire. I kept wanting to compare it to Idiocracy as a result, and I don't think it was quite as good as that one.

https://www.lepoint.fr/images/2018/03/10/13793177lpw-13793193-article-jpg_5074503.jpg

New Mexico, 1892, Captain Joseph Blocker is given the task to escort a dying Cheyenne war chief, Yellow Hawk, and four members of his family back to their tribal lands in Montana where he could spend his last days. The journey starts with the Captain discontent, hate and anger over escorting someone he fought against for 30 years. Along the journey he fond empathy and compassion on understanding that what separated them was exactly what brought them together: the lost.

I don't understand this movie, I do, but I don't . They basically did something that is not really correct in my opinion, that is using 21st century politics, perspectives, concepts into a late 19th century event. I don't mean you can't judge those events using your present opinion, but you shouldn't depict those mans and womens using today's ideas.

They made a lot of efforts situating this movie in the late 19th century. The problem is: effort. Nothing seems alive, the clothes, the beards, the hair cuts, the houses, the villages, everything looks like it was made recently. Excluding most of the natives and Christian Bale the acting seemed almost theatrical is some situations, not exactly because of the absence of background music.

I love the script, I like the cinematography, I like certain acting moments, but I also dislike many other things.

WIND RIVER (2017)
https://media1.fdncms.com/clevescene/imager/u/original/9301917/wind_river_movie.jpg
Wind River Indian Reservation in Wyoming, a expert tracker and Fish and Wildlife Service agent Cory Lambert discover by change while hunting a wild animal a frozen body of a young native American women. A FBI special agent Jane Banner is sent to investigate a possible homicide. The FBI special agent questions Cury about the possibility of him helping her find the murderer, along the search she finds out that Cury had a native American daughter also assassinated with the same patterns.

This is a murder mystery about loss, about pain and about living with it. I believe the director tried to make a perspective of a native American teenager living in a Indian Reservation. They lack opportunities, they are curious and they eventually get frustrated of all the "snow and silence". The fathers can't hold that for long, they open guard eventually, the suicide rate in United States among native Americans teenagers is the largest compared to any other racial groups, while that, the missing persons statistics are compiled for every other demographic, none exists for Native American womens.

I liked the cinematography, was wonderful. The soundtrack was awful, too much music where was not needed, too much sound and activity in the action moments, I believe the point of the movie is the exact opposite. The snowmobile action was super, was very-very well captured. The first movie I liked Jeremy Renner.

Didn't have high hopes but this isn't very good. As soon as I started it and the Lloyd Kaufman/ Michael Herz synthesizer music kicked in I figured, well at least it'll have some of this and that (what's Troma known for?). Unfortunately, it only had a little of this and none of that. If it had more of this and a bit of that, it could've jumped to a 3. It's an 80's slasher set in the northwoods of Wisconsin at a musky fishing tournament. The killers main tool is a gigantic, 2 foot musky lure with a silencer. He casts it into his victims, reels 'em in then puts 'em on a stringer. There's a bit of a backstory about the killer dude and cicadas but who cares - it's an 80's slasher made about 5 years too late. I'll give the bad guy some credit though - for a guy who never sets the hook he very rarely lets one get away.

I was really looking forward to this and it did not disappoint. Meaningful subject matter and a great story with two very likable leads. The only person missing was director Spike Lee. His best movies explode off of the screen and this one didn't do that, and that keeps the movie from reaching it's full potential. It certainly works as a comedy with a real human touch, but I'm very curious as to what the result may have been if it weren't a comedy. Lee's political statement at the end came of as misguided, but it didn't affect the enjoyment I had up to that point.

Thanks :) Yeah, a bit of both. I watched The Ballad of Buster Scruggs on Netflix, then got my brother to watch Hail, Caesar! as he hadn't seen it. Then I thought why not watch some more with him, starting with the Coen Brother films that I haven't seen. I think there are only The Hudsucker Proxy and A Serious Man left now

Hudsucker's an all-time favorite. Memorized the whole Amy Adams news room speech at one point.

From what I can tell that's not a common opinion. But I think The Hudsucker Proxy is one of the only full Coen Bros. comedies that I think works all the way through. I liked Hail, Caesar!, reallyy liked Intolerable Cruelty, and was pretty meh on Burn After Reading. And even Intolerable Cruelty felt a little too wacky for its own good at times.

Hudsucker is the only zany comedy of theirs that I think strikes the right balance the whole time, and it's largely because it's a little more whimsical in its comedy than the others, which are a good deal drier and more cynical.

The Little Drummer Girl (2018 series)

Usually when doing a screen adaption of a novel, the task is how to get most of the key narrative from the book transferred to the film. In the case of "Drummer Girl", either there wasn't enough detail to feature in the film, or the story could have been better told in perhaps 4, rather than 6, hours. Put another way, despite some light plot twists and competent acting, this series was laborious.

Part of the problem was that the ending really wasn't ever in any doubt. So the presentation of LeCarre's story became the work horse. Not having read the novel it's unknown how faithful the screen play was to it. Presumably, capturing LeCarre's dark prose while keeping the plot interesting is tricky.

Casting Florence Pugh as "Charlie" --the main protagonist-- was a misfire. The pudgy Brit blonde was not believable enough as a determined double agent. And the set up of her being sought out from her profession as an actress to take on a highly dangerous clandestine spy gig was a stretch right from the git-go.

Alexander Skarsgard looked the part. But if he does indeed have some seasoned acting chops, his approach here was too wooden. Michael Shannon did a predictably good job (despite his erratic Israeli accent) as the spy squad leader. It's the kind of role Shannon could do in his sleep. Supposedly the trick with him is to not let him lapse into creepiness. But his role was of equal importance to Pugh's.

The Little Drummer Girl was very watchable, but incited no wonderment nor emotional involvement.

All the Creatures Were Stirring (David Ian McKendry and Rebekah McKendry, 2018): A couple goes on a Christmas date to see a stage show of stories with the titular name. While the couple sees the show, we, the viewer get to see the stories in short film format, which was brilliant. All the stories are Christmas themed-horror, including a deadly office Christmas party, a last minute shopper stuck in an empty parking lot, a modern day Christmas Carol, a hit and run of a deer gone berzerk, and finally a story that looks to go one way but takes an even better direction. It's like the Creepshow of Christmas only the McKendrys came up with all the stories.

Yoda, since you're a Coen Bros. fan, I'm curious as to what you thought of the recent The Ballad of Buster Scruggs from Netflix?

I've been a big Coen's fan since 1987's Raising Arizona, and I've enjoyed roughly 2/3rds of their films. But personally I was stunned at "Ballad's" mediocrity. To me the big problem was the story writing. The cinematograpy was good, the production was fine, and the acting was fine (I especially enjoyed Tom Waits as the prospector). But the only Coenesque segment was really the first, with Tim Blake Nelson as the singing cowboy.

As I watched, I kept thinking, "Alright that wasn't good, but the next one surely will be." But none of them were. To me the segments were barely interesting. A few of them put me in mind of some of the poorer segments on the old Alfred Hitchcock Presents TV series. The only explanation I can think of that would explain compiling these semi-boring stories is that the duo weren't giving their best efforts for a non theatrical, subscription service release.

What's worse is that most of the critics are praising the film! That makes me believe that the Coen's have solidly achieved official Hollywood approved PC status-- one of the anointed directing teams. In other words they will never be criticized.

For those who enjoyed the film, more power to them. I just couldn't find much of anything in the production that was impressive. Perhaps the team is in a bit of a slump, or it may be that they've gotten too old to keep up the high standard they've set with some of their previous films, especially in light of so many imitators. I'm hoping they'll right the ship.

Mostly liked it. I posted some brief thoughts in another thread:

I liked every segment. Some more than others, for sure. But every one of them was enjoyable and I was genuinely sad when it ended. Lovely film.
I will say that after the first half, you start to get a feel for the wry, cruel nature of the tales, and you can start predicting certain general things. High Noon, high concept, low characters. Blacksmith Mirror, if you will.

I've been a big Coen's fan since 1987's Raising Arizona, and I've enjoyed roughly 2/3rds of their films. But personally I was stunned at "Ballad's" mediocrity. I can't really disagree re: the writing. Some of it was pretty good, but none of it was great. But then, I think there are plenty of Coen films where the writing isn't great, but is completely elevated by their handling of it. That's pretty much what I think of The Ballad of Buster Scruggs. Sometimes the writing's just okay (or merely "good"), but it's all pretty enthralling anyway because the acting, cinematography, and all-around direction is excellent throughout.

I sure would like to see an entire film that felt more like that first segment, though. I was kind of confused because I didn't see how it could be sustained, and of course it turns out it wasn't. But the music was really lovely and I'd just assumed it would be used throughout. Wish it had been. I also wondered if maybe each of the segments would be about a new gunslinger, tracking them until someone came and took them down. Both of those things might've been better than what we got.

Wouldn't mind hearing more on why you didn't care for it, though. Maybe expectation? It might not be exceptional among their other works, but even a middling Coen production is better than most of the things I'll be watching the night before, or after.

Funny how tastes differ. I posted elsewhere here that I hated the 1st segment & almost bailed out. Singing cowboy? Oof.

My favorite story was Zoe Kazan’s. I really loved it. Loved that guy who asked her to marry him. A new actor for me. And the guy who held off the Indians was excellent too.

Tom Waits was also excellent. Last story was good though I think there was a meaning to it that eluded me.

Over-hyped, which often disappoints.

Earlier this month, I, a long time friend, my sister-in-law, and my 15-year-old niece all attended a Sunday afternoon screening of the 70mm film version of The Sound of Music. It showed at a movie theatre not far from where I presently live, and, despite some little quirks in the print, we all had a wonderful afternoon. The Sound of Music, although it definitely doesn't hold the same special place in my heart regarding movies as West Side Story, is a good movie that's worth seeing. The song "Climb Every Mountain" is my favorite song in "The Sound of Music", because it delivers a very powerful message; that one must believe in him/herself, follow his/her dreams, and give that dream all the love they need.

Not my kind of movie, so I'm rating this based on just plain quality (not sure what else I rate on though). Everything about the movie was really well done, from the acting/writing/cinematography/etc. I never found myself bored, and the emotion in this movie is constantly tense.

"Joey, do you like movies about gladiators?"
Set in ancient Rome, the common folk are becoming bored with your standard gladiator fight so something must be done. After witnessing a few of the female slaves fighting in the kitchen the local Bigwig decides to have them replace the male gladiators and the common folk rejoice. Needless to say the women are not terribly excited about fighting to the death and devise an elaborate escape plan. A bad movie in a good way but not quite as bad/good as similar films like The Big Bird Cage or the Big Doll House.

Whenever I find myself digging to find good points about a film, based upon the filmmaker's enjoyable previous work, it usually means that the film is inferior. That's the case here. It reminds me of wanting to defend some of Woody Allen's stinkers, simply because I loved several single films in his body of work.

It's hard to put "dull" and "Coen Brothers" into the same sentence, but: The Coen Brothers' The Ballad of Buster Scruggs is pretty dull..:) It's not hard to imagine the writers sitting around a table saying, "Yeah, that's cool, let's use that!" But when placed on film many of the ideas didn't translate cinematically. Imagine if the exact movie had been released by a lesser name. It would have been panned.

There again, the first segment was pure Coen brothers. The prospector segment was fine acting by Tom Waits, and had stunning settings. The Zoe Kazan segment where she played a religious settler was interesting, and could have been developed into a full length story, and its silly ending was probably necessary to fit into the anthology format.

I've never been a fan of anthology movies, and that may have negatively influenced me. Likewise dark, dreary stories leave me cold. So the viewer is either attracted or nonplussed by "Ballad".

I did get a smile out of Jessica Kiang's comment, writing for The Playlist: "O Coen Brothers, Where Art Thou?"

Carnival of Souls (1962) by Herk Harvey

A very lynchian existential drama which i hope also influenced the likes of Romero, for instance Day of the Dead. This film has a good amount of horrific scenes, with some very interesting camera angles, which is underpinned by its use if surrealism and paranoia. I hope this will make "The top 100 horror films", but its chances might be slim due to it being relatively forgotten.

One of the best horrors i have seen in the past year!

Small Roads (2011) by James Benning

This was yet another intriguing film by Benning, but imo not top tier Benning, which i for instance regard Stemple Pass and 13 Lakes as. A more conventional film, with faster pacing and editing (and with real humans on screen). I still regard Benning as one of my favorite American avantgarde directors today, and also watch his films for meditative reasons.

Only watchable for the more geeky MoFo's!

I actually blind bought this from Walmart earlier. It turned out to be really good; guess that doesn't come as much of a surprise since I don't buy anything if I think it'll suck. Kamiyama - my first time even hearing of the guy - does a good job of tying the real world and the dream world together - the twist is genuinely surprising - and presenting us with a selection of likable characters (excepting the villains, of course, as per usual) while framing the whole thing around a mystery; throwing in motorcycles and flying (What did you expect from a guy with Akira and Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind on his favorite movies list?), a giant monster apparently impervious to conventional weaponry and a magic tablet doesn't hurt, either. The animation is, as can be expected of a movie produced in 2017, stunning. Wanna bet how good it looks on Blu-ray? Every color and line is vivid and distinct with no interlacing or edge enhancement cropping up. Yoko Shimomura's musical score fits right in place with the film's generally lighthearted tone. The English dub is really good, too. Brina Palencia is excellent as the protagonist Kokone and her alter ego Ancien. Palencia is almost certainly most known to anime fans for voicing Rei Ayanami in Funimation's series of excellent English dubs for the Rebuild of Evangelion (please let the Rebuild cast redub Neon Genesis Evangelion and End of Eva for Netflix instead of some new Shinji and Asuka who will sound completely wrong), but it is here that she gets to really flex her voice acting muscles. See, in Eva, while it's easy to see that Palencia does a good job, Rei's a supporting character who is so subdued and quiet, rarely coming out of her shell, that she's easily overshadowed by Shinji, Asuka, and Misato; indeed, it is the performances by Spike Spencer, Tiffany Grant, and Allison Keith - who have consistently dubbed Eva for more than two decades now - as those characters that English-language Eva fans immediately remember. But here Palencia is the lead and she pulls off every emotion with aplomb, each character sounding distinct from each other and both sounding completely different from Rei. The other actors are also excellent and the dub script is completely natural. Its DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track sounds just as good as its 1080p, 1.85:1-framed transfer looks, the spoken word clear and understandable, every music cue audible, and every sound effect loud and clear. Overall, it was a blast, and I can certainly see myself returning to it in the future. With that said, though, from my research after seeing it, opinions are mixed, so, while blind buying worked out pretty well for me, someone who's on the fence is probably best off with a rental. Later, guys.

I was supposed to watch First Reformed but the DVD was crap so I watched this a night early. Based on a true story, detectives with questionable methods track a serial killer. There's some great scenes and it's beautifully filmed. The story is well executed. The performances are very good but not unforgettable. I thought the tone was a little inconsistent, at least for my liking. At times it seemed like it was supposed to be humorous, especially during the first hour. For whatever reason, comedy in Asian films, no matter how subtle, just doesn't work for me. Had this had a more consistently dark tone, I probably would have loved it. Still a terrific movie.

The Hudsucker Proxy (Coen Brothers, 1994) rating_3_5

Perhaps the reason I put off watching this for so long was that it seemed from the outside to be a bit of an outlier in the Coen Brothers filmography in that its main stars don't appear in any other Coen films, and from the description and material associated with it, the whole story seemed "bizarre" even by the Coens' standards.

@Yoda (http://www.movieforums.com/community/member.php?u=1) you're absolutely spot on in your assessment the other day that this comedy works because it is a flat-out screwball comedy throughout. It's not a serious drama with dark comedic overtones but instead a full of life, full of laughs film from the off. Not every single gag lands perfectly, but most of them do and a lot of them are hilarious. A very enjoyable film. Long live the Hud!

I could have done without the common retarded questions and comments, one scene for example..
"Where were you?"
"At the garage"
"How do you know it is a garage? Maybe it is a pool or something else" -- this is probably why people run away when I mention a French movie. "Half of them are avante-garde, which means its French for BS."

"Avante-garde... Hmmm, that means it's good." or the typical, "That's-what-its-supposed-to-be" defense of everything.

But the lead actress might have been the prettiest woman I've ever seen in a movie, and most familiar names don't seem to be. I just saw a picture of Marina Vlady at 71 years of age, still very pretty. Must be a Russian thing?

Good movie, but not quite as charming as I expected given all the praise for it this year. Conventional storyline, but it was enjoyable. I did laugh when I heard this is falling flat in Asian markets though haha
