Its been quite a few years since i last saw any films by Ceylan, but i am inclined to say that Three Monkeys is his best work to date. Though i haven't seen Winter Sleep yet, which we are planning on doing on Saturday in the Movie Club Aurora.

On a Danish message board i am frequenting, Climates seems to be the favorite, which i also remember as pretty good.

Distant is filled with to the brim with existential nothingness which is to my liking, and the cinematography is excellent, though i couldn't help to feel that focal point of existential nothingness became a bit of an impasse.

Wonder Wheel
(Woody Allen, 2017)

rating_4

Oh yeah...Weird Woody finally put out another good one! Seen this the other night and I'm already wanting to see it again!

Allen uses the lifeguard character at the beginning of his film to serendipitously tell the viewer that Wonder Wheel contains symbolism, as the lifeguard says: he's working on a play and the poet in him loves symbolism...And the romantic in him loves very dramatic characters.

And that's what you get, stunning use of colors and creative lighting, the likes of which I've never seen before. The colors in context come from the neon lights of Coney Island but in the deeper scheme of things the colors and lighting change, as does the mood of the scene or change in the character's mood. It's all quite nicely done.

The family is colorful too, to say the least, in a dismal but connectable way. The lifeguard mentions the works of Eugene O'Neill and that's Woody letting you know O'Neill is his muse for Wonder Wheel.

Hugo Kudos to the actors!

I've never been a big fan of Jim Belushi's but OMG he delivers in this one. I didn't even think of him as Belushi. He really comes across like a real life Ralph Kramden from the 50s The Hooneymooners. But not as comical, but every bit there.

Kate Winslet has been a favorite of mine for a long while, here she takes it up a couple notches! I read online that she was unsure if she could plays such an intensely troubled person while delivering brutal honest. But she does!

Great story too and smooth long takes with out jarring edits, as you would expect from a skilled film maker like Woody Allen.

So far this is my favorite film of 2017

That's extremely surprising, since I was under the impression that was his worst showing, and I agree. Still a decent film.

I liked that movie too. Like you said, very Twilight Zone...It's funny you said it was really funny, cause I said the opposite in my review,So it's funny we both had different takes on that, while both of us still liked the film...I thought it was quite unique, and thought provoking.

Cheers CR. I think for me it ended up being funny without really trying to be. Perhaps its because I find Duplass an overall humorous person, that it made it funny. I certainly wouldn't call it a comedy and thankfully so, as it would put me off by being labelled a romantic comedy but everything about it just works really well.

Agree its definitely unique and thought provoking. Needs to be seen more.

The Square (2017)

Tough one to describe here. My favourite thing about The Square was how awkward some of the scenes felt. Some of the interactions between Christian and Anne were beyond cringing. This was my third Ostlund and he really has a flair for portraying human behaviour, I cant wait to watch more from him. Obviously he raises so many questions with The Square, I'm probably not the person to delve into them though.

The One I Love (2014)

Very Twilight-Zone esque and really really funny. Duplass and Elizabeth Moss are both great as a married couple going through relationship problems, who attend a therapist, played by Ted Danson, that advises them to go away on a retreat together. From there on, it gets totally bizarre. The dialogue was great but as expected, it was the way Duplass plays out his lines that stole the show here.

Thanks for the tip. I enjoyed the movie. It was really just a light, sci-fi romantic comedy. The only drawback is the viewer's tendency to try to see how they filmed the duplicate characters.

Elisabeth Moss seems to be getting a lot of work lately. She has rather an "every woman" nature, and a pretty good range. It's the first I've seen of an Duplass Brothers productions. Their HBO series "Room 104" sounds like an Alfred Hitchcock or Rod Serling type of approach.

Surge of Power: Revenge of the Sequel (Rating: B) - This sequel to the 2006 indie LGBTQ superhero film Surge of Power: The Stuff of Heroes is a fun take on the superhero genre. The out and proud titular hero is likable enough without overdoing it with the stereotypes (save for a few scenes from supporting characters). Eric Roberts is having fun as supervillain Augur, who hires Surge's arch nemesis, Metal Master, to find a rare item for him in Vegas, prompting Surge to follow him and stop him. Loads of cameos/appearances from over 50 stars of superhero/sci-fi/comic entertainment. I'd rather watch this again than say... Superhero Movie. There is a cliffhanger that leads to a current in production third film.

More graphic than I expected, which wasn't a bad thing, although it was a little weird. But a very quirky and honest film with some great little spots on Crumb-like animation thrown in. Cast was good and was difficult to fault their performances. I also liked the 70's San Fran feel of the film. It did feel a little predictable at times but still a good film.

Honestly, this could be my favorite Wes Anderson movie of all time.

Everything is just executed perfectly. The art style and detail is just amazing.

Big Fish & Begonia

I enjoyed this Chinese animation. The art style reminds of Miyazaki and it is really beautiful. The OST is great as well.

Things I didn't like:
- Voice acting is poorly done
- Dialogue is childish and lame
- Plot is the weakest link

Final rating: 3.5

A strange one from Refn (1st film after the Pusher trilogy I think) that deals with John Turturros security guard trying to get over/make sense of the supposed random demise of his wife.

It's a weird, distant film that seems to have repeated visual and behavioural motifs throughout but never really goes anywhere. Or at least anywhere that will indicate if the deceased husband is "crazy"/seen as crazy or on the correct line of inquiry. More a study in obsession which it *does* really work as.

John T is excellent and nice to see james Remar (Ajax! :)) and it was an interesting watch so a 6/10.

I recently read about the 1970 movie ‘Love Story’ and its story was really gripping, so it was the last one I watched and I really loved it. However, I did not like the part when the actress died. It was an emotional story and I would rate it eight over ten.

A Quiet Place (2018) (Directed by John Krasinski) 4
https://i.imgur.com/bBukDyp.jpg

The oppressive silence of A Quiet Place does more than highlight the scares, it comes to represent a breakdown in communication within a grieving family. The breaking of the silence, as a result, symbolizes the apprehension of the characters to share their emotions. The only character in the film outside of the family, The Man in the Woods, proves this point when he succumbs to a traumatic event, finally vocalizes his plight, and unleashes a suicidal yelp. Another touching scene following this theme is when the wife and the husband find catharsis in a shared song that takes the place of their own words. This barrier in communication is also underscored emphatically in the scene where the mother confesses she too blames herself for the inciting incident of the film, a fact even the audience was unaware of to that point.

Just as the loss of the youngest son drives them apart, the conclusion of a precarious pregnancy reaffirms their love for each other. It's really a wholesome story frequently pervaded by the macabre realities of the world its characters inhabit. Even the conclusion is left open ended as to the fate of our protagonists, though their survival takes a back seat to the well being of their relationship by that point. These bitter-sweet contradictions are all represented by the film's acquisition of a PG-13 rating despite it being one of the more terrifying, and generally upsetting, major features in recent memory.

The success of John Krasinski's star turn as an autuer relies not only on its heart, and by consequence its lack of heart, but on its eyes as the titular condition challenges casual viewers to connect with an unusually sparse picture. Even if I consider myself a fan of slower, simpler cinema, bearing witness to long, quiet sequences in the local megaplex, in one of the rooms reserved for the most widely released pictures no less, was a refreshing experience. A Quiet Place is an appropriately understated victory for the state of cinema when it can compete with Rampage at the box office.

Not ashamed to admit that I had to do quite a lot of reading into, after I saw this as I know next to nothing about Greek mythology. Interesting fact though, The Smiths used a scene for the artwork to This Charming Man. But still, I really enjoyed this, quite like I enjoyed La Belle et la Bete on my recent viewing. Technically, its astounding and obviously well ahead of its time. The travelling through mirrors, reflections of mirrors, motorcycle henchmen, Tarkovskyesque Zones and bizarre radio transmissions, not to mention reverse photography, totally pickled my head but I've been unable to stop thinking about them!

I'm away to give me head a rest here.

http://img.moviepostershop.com/the-great-train-robbery-movie-poster-1903-1020549358.jpg
This 1903 film created lots of the narrative for the western genre and still holds up after all this years.
He also was a pioneered of narrative language in action films. Nice to see that all the action scenes were filmed in a single take. Today we love it because it is becoming rare, but it was already used 100 years ago...

I was delight by the last scene, where one of the bandits shoots toward us. A unique relationship between violence and cinema. I wonder what was the audience's reaction back in 1903, if many were scared to see a passenger coming off a train, or seeing factory workers coming out of a factory, imagine the experience of seeing this movie!

Now, this one was a fun short ride. It's so funny to see how they used their imagination to put the moon on screen. Most of the elements of the sceneries was painted, that's something. I wonder how they did this with all the limitations of that time. I'll check it out others georges méliès films. He's very cartoonish and theatrical, I like that.

The worst wait for me was for Wallander series 3 with Krister Henriksson. It wasn't the best but there were a couple of very good episodes.

Bodnia did actually do two seasons of The Bridge – we're waiting for season 4 in the UK which has apparently been shown in Sweden. I would say the first two seasons were the best, and probably equally good.

I watched this for the movie tournament and because Camo has no business loving an 80's comedy that I haven't seen. I was never interested in it due to the story and it's PG rating. I just prefer different Animal House type comedy. This is my favorite time of Tom Hanks' career though, and he's great as is the rest of the cast that includes Bruce Dern, Carrie Fisher, and Corey Feldman. I thought it was enjoyable and worth watching.

Proper off thread now but I thought it funny how Kims character "Frank" wasn't even mentioned in the 2 sequels to "Pusher" even though Tonny, Milo and Radovan knew him pretty well. He was quite a major player (the character) in Copenhagen. Are we to assume he got killed and they don't acknowledge it out of some "honour amongst theives" ethos or that he just left Copenhagen/ Denmark altogether and hires Ford Pintos to tourists??? :)

Good pun, Ms. M..:) But you're kinder than I. It's the worst movie I've watched in 5 years. I should have paid attention to who was directing it, and investigated some of Lanthimos' previous work. I might have spared myself the experience.

"Deer" is a self-indulgent, pretentious, and sadistic picture that is so vague and mindless that many viewers will be checking their watches to see how much time the turkey has left before it ends. One is lured into this bad experience by a first act that's relatively interesting. But one spends the rest of the film thinking that it can't be getting as bad as it obviously is. At its merciful conclusion, it feels like you've just lost all your money to an amateur con man.

The acting was mediocre, the editing was barely competent, and the story was written by two guys evidently stoned on pot. So naturally the screen play won the award at Cannes..:D The only relief came from a few laugh out loud moments at some of the silly, incoherent action. It's surprising that Colin Farrell and Nicole Kidman agreed to star. Perhaps they like to support indie productions, or are at the point where they don't need bigger money.

To keep the art crowd breathing heavy the story was supposedly linked to a Greek tragedy, where a sacred deer was killed, and retribution must be had, hence the questionable title. Watch at your own peril....

I have literally just got home from seeing this film.

A spaceship explodes in space and three capsules full to earth. A gorilla (george), a wolf and a crocodile get extremely aggressive and grow to considerable sizes.

The main characters davis (Dwayne johnson) and russel (Jeffery Dean morgan) are amazing in this. They go off and save the world from these three animals.

The film's full of action and sometimes quite tense in places. There's also abit of humour between davis and george the gorilla.

I strongly recommend this movie If you haven't seen it already

Death on the Nile. Hercule Poirot is holidaying in Egypt when he gets drawn into the murder of a young heiress who seems to have almost as much in the way of enemies as she does in money. Peter Ustinov leads a fantastic cast (David Niven, Angela Lansbury, Lois Chiles, Mia Farrow, Olivia Hussey, Jack Warden, Bette Davis, George Kennedy) in this enjoyable and classy late 70s adaptation of the Agatha Christie whodunnit. Very entertaining old school fun. :)

Sean Penn is incredible. The setting of most of it in a club with a backdrop of funky toons helps also. 1st time rewatch after seeing it in the ABC Glasgow as a stude.....grows on you. Strong 8/10.

I love this movie. Confident I’d call it my favourite De Palma and I like a lot of his other films.

I wasn't very familiar with this story and didn't know how it ended. It's well made as should be expected from a Ridley Scott film, and it kept me engrossed. I think casting Marky Mark in a serious role was a questionable decision but he was ok. Michelle Williams was good and Christopher Plummer great.

Doc's rating: 2/10
I can't agree more. I had the same thoughts during watchig this movie. Let me just say tahat two person left the cinema in the middle of film. Unfortunately I wasn't one of them. I wanted to see the end. Today I'm asking myself: "why?". The girl in the row before me, few times checked what was the time at her phone and the boy next to me was sighing at the same moments as me.
I thought the same about Kidman and Farrell. The prize in Cannes? The best comment will be silence.
Thanks for sharing your opinion, Doc :)

I love this movie. Confident I’d call it my favourite De Palma and I like a lot of his other films.

It has De Pallma writ all over the soundtrack and set pieces...but well! Carlitos interactions with his cousin and ex-cohorts made this film stand out, he wants to get straight.

Coco (2017)

I feel bad giving this only 3 stars, perhaps the Pixar bar is set so high that I'm being picky, but although the art and the world created here was incredible, I wasn't so keen on the story. The whole set up is a little laboured, the heart strings are tugged on a little too hard and when you know exactly where the story is going, it gets a little frustrating waiting for the characters to get there. Even my 7 year old spotted some tired tropes: "every time in films when someone falls off a tower someone always saves them before they hit the ground. Except in Harry Potter but that doesn't count because Dumbledore is already dead."

Ready Player One (2018)

This was a fun but flawed ride. I enjoyed the book, and this is not a wholly faithful adaptation but it works pretty well. The nostalgia factor here works well because the whole film itself IS one of those slightly scary, slightly daft, too long but fun Spielberg adventure movies from your childhood but with a well-realised virtual reality world and popular YA dystopian theme for the kids. I wasn't keen on the Shining bits (I like The Shining but it was the wrong fit). The story isn't always clear and doesn't quite bear up to logical scrutiny (especially when Wade's friends, some of whom are sadly underdeveloped, show up irl just as he needs them). If you wanted to be picky you could find plenty to pick at, but I enjoyed it.

3 for the novelty alone, this is a silent technicolor film with sound effects, if we ever do a 1920's countdown this should make the top 100.

A Quiet Place (2018)

I thought this was a neat directorial exercise from Krasinski. For that same reason, that he’s clearly just looking to test some things out for potential future endeavors, this isn’t really made with longevity in mind. But I think he succeeded in what he set out to do. He can build tension, the use of sound design is excellent in most places (duh), good presentation of geography and the performances are all good. But it all really climaxes at the second act. Then you’re left about 20 more minutes that don’t have the same level enthusiasm and you feel it. Oh, well.

Oh, about the performances, and I’m putting a big disclaimer but also... not so much; I thought that aside from this being like a kid getting to play with new toys, it was also, curiously, like Krasinski and Blunt were working out baby jitters.
Particularly the former, who might have externalized his doubts with his character by making him kind of a f**k-up.

But that last part is all speculation on the lives of others and me probably giving the film a lot of benefit of doubt, logic-wise.

Note #2:
I also found out this was almost a Cloverfield movie. That makes sense. It’s a lot like 10 Cloverfield Lane. The ending is almost beat for beat.

Jonestown: The Life and Death of Peoples Temple (2006)

Such a bleak and tragic film. Some of the shots at the end are just so harrowing and hearing how the 'Kool-Aid' was administered was gut-wrenching. As thought-provoking a documentary as I've seen.

The first three films by Terrence Malick (I watched each one twice):

★★★
A look into the eyes of evil with a little indifference. The cinematography was the best aspect of Badlands, Tak Fujimoto (Star Wars, The Sixth Sense, The Silence of the Lambs) never disappoints, the guy is a wizard. Always capturing in a minimalist (this is the magic) the desolate landscapes around the characters.
The story is cliche, but I think that was not the most important, the motivations were the most important. At first glance, I could not understand many of the main characters' attitudes, they were puzzles to me. It did not make sense. Reviewing the film, I began to understand the real reason, the indifference, the nature of the evil already stagnant in their veins. Definitely a cursed journey from the beginning. Unfortunately it did not captivate me, the characters did not captivate me, the look of evil left me with an empty taste. And the humor, I could't get into it.

Oh yeah, Ennio Morricone! He was the main reason I was curious with this one. And he didn't disappointed me. A work full of subtleties, which accompanies very well the delicacy of the feelings of the characters on screen. This was the first time I saw Richard Gere without his white hair. I was surprised how the director decided to transpose the feelings in a silent way, without actions or dialogues that could explain to the viewer what they are feeling. I had to be taken along by the stream below to fully understand them. For good or bad, the film seemed to follow the same structure as Badlands, and it also left the same taste of emptiness in my mouth. Even the beautiful pictures and Malick's interesting way of filming could not save this movie from being a Ferris wheel, a story without destiny, at least one that is not totally predictable and forgettable.

I'm going against the flood with this one.
The actors in "The Thin Red Line" are making one movie, and the director is making another. This leads to an almost hallucinatory sense of displacement, as the actors struggle for realism, and the movie's point of view hovers above them like a high school kid all filled with big questions." This is part of Roger Ebert's review for The Thin Red Line, and I have to agree with him, the actors really looked displaced during some sequences, but you know what? I loved it! This created a line between the real and the imaginary. Many of the soldiers were there, but at the same time they were not. Their minds have been constantly dominated by fear or by the world beyond those hills. The film offers a contemplation in turns of the nature and of the human being, and in no moment one of the questions is answered. Usually we accompany the American soldiers, and their enemies are constantly approached as mere "enemies", and when they are Japanese, they attack like crazy samurai, conformed by their own death. The Thin Red Line does not use this argument. The Japanese feel fear, they cry, they attack with terror in their eyes, just as Americans constantly feel the same fear during an attack. The taking of the Japanese village is one of my favorite sequences, the terror seemed so real, so scary. So much suffering, for nothing!
"Many faces, little time on screen." I read a lot of negative reviews saying that this is bad, once again I disagree, I think the fact that many familiar faces appear on the screen and be killed in the blink of an eye or just leave the scene and do not come back fascinating. This creates an unpredictability in the script. Anyone can die, no matter if he is a famous actor or not, I feared for everyone.
The way Malick positions a camera next to the soldiers, crawling with them in woods, the cinematography of John Toll, the music of Hans Zimmer... I loved. The second time I watched, the film was even more exciting.
I'm not ashamed to say that I cried, I cried when I realized how much I enjoyed this movie, and I cried with the raised questions. The imperfections of The Thin Red Line are one of the best mistakes I've ever seen in the seventh art.

After many many years, I FINALLY got around to watching Lawrence of Arabia, in it's entirety. I thought this would have to be a two-day endeavor, but I enjoyed some unexpected free time yesterday and was able to watch all 3 hrs 48 mins on a Sunday afternoon.

As for the film itself, let me start off by saying that it's possibly the most beautifully shot film of all time. AMAZING cinematography. The other thing that stands out was the acting of Peter O'Toole, which stands the test of time as one of cinema's greatest acting performances. A brilliant character study, it was fascinating to watch the transformation of a meek, passive idealist transform into an almost ruthless at times war commander.

Definitely the most intelligent of all the epics, I found that it certainly lived up to its hype as one of greatest films of all time. As far as David Lean films go, I still prefer Bridge on the River Kwai, simply because it's more digestible, less complex, and no less brilliant and beautifully, but LOA was certainly well worth the long watch, and at no point did I feel like I was wasting my time. I'll have to amend my 1960s film list, because Lawrence of Arabia certainly belongs in the top 10, if not top 5.

9.5/10

Of the three, I only consider Days of Heaven quality. I think Days of Heaven is excellent.

I found Thin Red Line to be sleep inducing, and Badlands is horrible.

Sweet Smell of Success (1957) hit me over the head with a 2x4 labeled "WHY HAVEN'T YOU SEEN ME BEFORE?!?" This movie, unfortunately, has flown under my radar for my 30 years of existence on this planet, with it only coming to me attention a few months ago. I noticed that it was playing at a local theater near me this past weekend, so I was originally going to go see it there, but we got some bad weather over the weekend, and frankly, it shouldn't be this cold in Louisiana at this time of year, so I stayed in bed and rented it instead.

I'm surprised this movie doesn't get more mainstream attention - especially for its script and score. Though released in 1957, Sweet Smell of Success feels both modern and timely. I'm still tossing over who's performance I am most in awe of: Burt Lancaster or Tony Curtis? While Lancaster's J.J. Hunsecker basically weaponizes the English language, the desperate sliminess of Tony Curtis' Sidney Falco just oozes on screen.

I can't recommend this film enough, seldom do you hear dialogue like you hear it in Sweet Smell of Success.

The Children (2008)

1.5+

http://bloodbathandbeyond.tv/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/the-children.jpg

I came across this movie and thought it sounded interesting. I looked it up and saw 6 IMDb and 75% Rotten Tomatoes, pretty good for a horror movie. Right away I was disappointed because it looked like a Hallmark movie. I've seen many horrors with lower budgets that were poorly made, but they often have their charms. 5 adults and their children are spending Christmas at a nice secluded home, when the children become murderous. Killer kids are creepy and there were moments in the film that made me squirm. I just think it was sorely lacking any type of atmosphere, and some dark humor would have been very much appreciated.

I actually saw it on Friday night. Was going to post a review later today, but Lawrence of Arabia was fresher on my mind. lol

I wish I could say I loved it as much as you, but unfortunately, I didn't.

Don't get me wrong, it wasn't a bad movie AT ALL... it just didn't grip me and blow me away the way I had hoped.

I felt it could have been enhanced with a better performance from Susan Harrison. I felt her acting was wooden, even bordering on pretty bad.

Burt Lancaster and Tony Curtis were both excellent, as you correctly stated, but I dunno... can't quite put my finger on it... Sweet Smell Success simply didn't capture my attention the way my other 50s favorites did.

I'd give it a 7/10. But I'm very glad you loved it, and I can see why you did.

La famille Bélier (2014)
For the Foreign Language Hall of Fame

http://agenda.germainpire.info/img/2014/20141209_la-famille-belier.jpg

Famille Bélier is a simple, predictable movie with a lot of cliches, is tematically reminiscent of the drama "Beyond the Silence", but was designed primarily as an entertaining comedy, it was absolutely charming, funny and moving.
Young Louane Emera impresses in her lead role with her powerful, natural portrayal.
The course of the movie is a typical one:
And from this point on, the end is easy to guess. The film's final scene, and a heart-tugging musical number by Paula, is trying hard to win the audience over - melodramatic one, but it can not leave you indifferent. 3.5

As an ode to Harry Dean Stanton it worked quite well, even though a few scenes seemed quite pathetic and the manuscript did not work out that well. In between there were a few really good reflections on death and being-towards-death. To sum it up, a nice little film, but nothing special.

Blame it on the success on the TERRIBLE Taken franchise.
Taken was the movie that made Neeson a full-fledged action star.
The first movie in the series wasn't too bad. But then the second and third were flat-out terrible.
Some of his other stand-alone action films were pretty good, but The Commuter is bad. Really bad. Hopefully, this will convince him and his agent that it's time to hang up the cell phone and gun (both of which have become a Liam Neeson action movie trademark), and start making serious dramatic films.

RATING: rating_5
I agree, GL. "Success" is a wonderful film. You're right about the dialogue. And Curtis played against type as a weasel very well. One of his better roles. The film seems somehow modern, even though it was from '57.

The Poughkeepsie Tapes is a horror mockumentary that focuses on a fictional serial-killer who produces "snuff films" of his victims, and is done to come off like a real documentary, with experts, witnesses, that kind-of stuff. The film has a few real creepy moments with the killer, but, overall, the acting is so-so, and they made a few weird choices with the documentary approach (his snuff films have sound-effects and music during them, with, in my opinion, ruins the "real" feel they meant to have). Might be worth checking out for fans of the genre, but not casuals.

Black Panther (2018)

I've been somewhat of a fan of this character since he was in the Marvel comic book, but I confess my like of him came more from the look (the suit) of the character and his fighting abilities. I didn't receive a lot of exposition from the comics I read about his homeland and people. I mostly read his exploits when they had Marvel "Team-Ups." So, the introduction to his home of Wakanda in Africa was a real eye-opener in the best sense. This was a world-building movie but don't let that put you off at all. Everyone has a beginning but not every character in the Marvel canon gets a trio of movies or a stand-alone movie where their background is introduced. I'm glad they gave Black Panther his own film. The land of Wakanda (the hidden part) is magnificent and the visuals just pop on the screen. I thought the first fifteen minutes or so moved a little slow, but all of a sudden, I was in this world and enjoying everything in it. The sequence where T'Challa / Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman} becomes KIng T'Challa and is challenged, from start to finish, was just splendid. All the different tribes standing in the side of the cliff openings, wearing the multi-colored robes and gowns, above the waterfalls where the challenge fight took place, was just beautiful. I honestly wished it had lasted longer.

Wakanda is also highly technologically advanced and has been for a long time. The main tech in the city is T'Challa's own younger sister, Shuri (Letetia Wright), who steals a lot of the scenes she's in by bringing a sense of humor to the proceedings and a bit of disregard for tradition. The major resource for the Wakandans is the metal Vibranium, the same material that Captain America's shield is made of. Everything in the city is powered by it and it is ingrained into Black Panther's suit and makes him nearly invulnerable. But, some bad guys, led by Andy Serkis in a scene-chewing role, steal some Vibranium and try to sell it to interested parties. This part of the movie is almost like a James Bond film, where Shuri plays the "Q" role, fixing her brother up with a necklace that he needs only to hit a claw hanging from, and instant suit! Plus, various nefarious (hey, that rhymed) parties gathering at a casino in Korea to bid on the stolen resource.

There is a mysterious player in the proceedings, played with bitter viciousness by Michael B. Jordan, in a very well-acted role. He comes to be T'Challa's worst enemy. Martin Freeman is back from Captain America: Civil War as CIA Agent Everett K. Ross, who turns out to be an invaluable help in the final battle, with a major ground war occurring between tribes. Danai Gurira is super as Okoye, the chief of the King's personal guard and a total bad ass with a spear. I loved this character and Gurira's performance. Lupita Nyong'o is luminous as T'Challa's one-time love who wants to help needy people on the outside of the hidden Wakanda even if it means exposing their secrets. Angela Bassett and Forest Whitaker are on hand as, respectively, T'Challa's mother and his most-trusted advisor.

There are awesome chases with real cars and flying vehicles being controlled by virtual reality doubles in the lab. There are fights galore and some gunfights. I could go on forever but I feel I've already enthused about this movie enough. If you haven't seen it, try to catch it at the cinema. I'm glad I did as the big screen was just filled with amazing Marvel wonder.

Not a Refn fan but Turturro is great so I'll bite. Thanks! Never knew of this!

A lot of potential is squandered on cheap and obvious jokes. A spoof on Die Hard about 3 waiters who are in over their heads when they are locked in a hotel with some terrorists. Unfunny drug jokes, tasteless gay jokes and uninspired writing make for a rough watch. Even if you're a fan of Workaholics, this material seems below the caliber of what these guys are capable of. One scene had a few laughs from me though, which involves Adam Devine's penis on display for everyone to see.

Since it's on Netflix, you won't feel too cheated...which seems to be the "go-to" explanation for a lot of Netflix movies.

I liked this and Joaquin Pheonix is without doubt very strong in it. The storyline itself is somewhat predictable if you are at least au fait with the "genre". Funny how everyone says "Taxi Driver" when the first reference I thought of was "Mona Lisa". The performances throughout are very strong so a good 8/10. ps the use of "Charlenes" "I've been to paradise" song was lovely juxtaposition, kinda like Air Supply doing "All out of love" in Animal Kingdom....enjoyed it.

I did not expect the movie to be as slow as it was. I loved the fact that the movie was as long as The Thin Red Line, and I confess I wanted more!
I could swear that this movie would be a commercial work, I was wrong, the film is even more contemplative than the previous one. For 172 min I fell in love with Pocahontas, I was disappointed by the circumstances imposed by the colonizers. It is so sad to meditate on this, the fusion of two cultures could be so rich, so beautiful. Everyone would win. But greed makes one want to overlap another, to kill the other culture... In the firsts moments I was a little shocked by the jump cuts used by Malick, it was like Godard in Breathless. Impulsive cuts during the same sequence. After a few minutes I kind of got used to it and came to admire the choice of cutting out the motions that make up a movement. That choice must have made many people hate the way it was edited, the ignorants might even say that the movie was poorly edited. This is something I have to take off my hat. Certainly they were aware that many would see this in a negative way.
I was very frustrated with Smith's departure, with the way he seemed to me, not to treat Pocahontas as he should. I would actually give myself to her, fight for her, maybe that's why I got frustrated, because I fell in love with her culture and with the simplicity she lived, and of course, with her. But Smith was what it was! It's a fact.
When John Rolfe shows up (at the mark of two hours in), what he finds is not the Pocahontas full of life that Smith had come to know. He knows a lonely, sad woman, and yet he fights for her. Not with swords like Smith but with his heart. "They humiliate me, but they can't reach me," when he said that, I thought: that's the kind of love she deserves!
Once again, I was frustrated, the ending really frustrated me, maybe because I was blinded by the romance. I wanted everything to work out, I wanted them to go back to Virginia. But what I did not realize was that she had already been happy. She made all the choices on her own (thanks to John Rolfe, an amazing person!). I joint frustration with Rolfe. It is what it is! It is a real fact.
Meditation around nature is something I did not want it to end. The contrast of the life of the natives who live with nature and how the civilized man arrives, comes and mutates, destroys the environment to live is something that made me think. I had to pause the film to contemplate these thoughts on the civilized man. (When Smith enters the fort for the first time, after spend months with the natives, he was shocked, I was shocked, but what more we can expect?) Whenever I see natives, I think, "They are living life right, and what about us? The CIVILIZED MAN..." The New World is wonderful, until it was colonized, the other New World (the one that Pocahontas / Rebecca comes to know), It is dirty, sad, and nothing beautiful. London is not so attractive to me, in fact, the civilized world is not as attractive to me as its homeland (Virginia).
Oh it was a beautiful world, and I wish it had remained the old world...

If any of you are like I am, it's nice to peruse these threads in order to get suggestions for movies to watch. Consequently I'm copying some comments I made to I. Rex's nice review of The Genius of Beethoven (2005) in the "Movie Reviews" section.

I’m glad that I. Rex wrote a review of The Genius of Beethoven. Otherwise I might have never have known of its existence.

The 3 part series uses an unusual format: a period docudrama with frequent interludes by the composer/conductor/musicologist Charles Hazelwood, who is himself a highly regarded and popular figure today’s contemporary and classical music scene. Hazelwood deftly provides musical insight and explanation of music theory which accompanies the drama that anyone could understand.
The series in only 3 hours does an excellent job of capsulizing Beethoven’s life and career, which could easily withstand a 12 or 15 hour presentation. Many of the highlights (and low lights) of Beethoven’s life are examined. The viewer does not have to know anything about music, nor to be a fan of Beethoven to enjoy this mesmerizing series.

Beethoven single-handedly brought to a close the historical music period known as the Classical period and transitioned music into a new style referred to as the Romantic period. In the process he composed some of the most powerful music ever heard, until the appearance of later composers such as Wagner, Richard Strauss, Prokofiev, and Stravinsky. I spent 6 years in music school, where we studied Beethoven’s symphonies and piano sonatas. We were astounded that someone in the early 1800s had composed music of his complexity and innovation.

The acting is first rate, with Paul Rhys turning in a fine performance as Beethoven. The supporting cast is peppered with seasoned British actors. The music performance is perfect-- the orchestral segments presumably performed by Hazelwood’s “Army of Generals” orchestra, comprised of some of the UK’s finest musicians.

The BBC has done some extraordianry documentaries over the years, and this miniseries ranks up in the top tier. All 3 parts are available on YouTube, so it’s easily accessible. Treat yourself to an absorbing and unusual docudrama.

At times fascinating however the constant flashbacks do get quite confusing in that I kept forgetting which episode I have already watched! Still, was really interesting watching all the characters grow up, especially Neill who went through some serious ups and downs.

Love The Up Series so much, 63 Up next year! I love Tony as well, he was initially cast because the producers thought he'd end up a criminal due to his poor background and mischievous nature. So great to see him prove them wrong and turn out a good guy with a solid job and family.

Also Bruce is a gosh darn saint! He really made the best of his priveleged upbringing. Rich people who spend time volunteering in Africa or wherever often come across phony to me but i have no qualms with saying he is a genuinely good person.

I was drawn to this movie because I don't recall ever seeing it before. The story was forgettable (co-written under a pseudonym by Dalton Trumbo), but there were two things that got my attention.

One: The cinematography was unusual and innovative for the time (1949). There was lots of location footage, but what was interesting was how many scenes were shot with the camera in the back seat of a car, showing the action of the people in the front seat, and observing integral action occurring where they were driving. I wondered who the cinematographer was, so I looked him up. Sure enough, it was Russell Harlan, who photographed Witness for the Prosecution, To Kill a Mockingbird, and Hatari. The picture is worth watching just for Harlan's work.

Two: John Dall co-starred with Peggy Cummings. He seemed too refined for the role, but yet he seemed very familiar. I couldn't place what else he'd been in. Then it came to me that he'd co-starred with Farley Granger in Rope. He was best at portraying sophisticated characters.

Nice film. Good role for Cummings.

Yes, is this still happening? I couldn't find anything on it. I know Apted said as long as he was still alive he would do it! Tony was great as well, easily the most genuine of them all although I loved the connection with Neill and Bruce later on, despite how boring he across the first few series. But yes, literally a life saver I would say.
Suzy also was a real surprise. She totally changed when she got married.

I haven't heard anything about it but it's scheduled and like you said Apted said it'll happen as long as he's alive.

Bruce being weirdly depressed when he was a child then it staying with him as he got older and becoming about the plight of less fortunate people through to him and Neil in 56 Up is the most heartwarming life tragectory. Neil really worried me, so depressing even when he had kind of got things together when he was living on that island putting on plays he seemed seriously unhinged and it felt shortlived, hope he's doing better.

Halloween: Resurrection (Dir. Rick Rosenthal) 2

https://i.imgur.com/3xVZRta.jpg

It's endearing how achingly 2002 it is. Reality television, generic alt rock/RnB, hair gel, you name it. Rick Rosenthal definitely consulted his grandchildren for this one. The whole POV gimmick is likely a result of The Blair Witch Project's success. "What else do the kids like? Uh, we need a computer hacker guy." The teen movie aspect is generally a lot of fun.

The most annoying elements are honestly when it tries to be clever. The psych 101 bull**** is just awkward considering how dumb everything is. It's also out of place given how irrelevant fear is to the tone of this silly movie. There are other brainy elements with meta filmmaking and having an audience on camera react to/participate in the violent spectacle. I'm guessing that was all spurred on by the success of Wes Craven's Scream. Probably the same reason they billed Jamie Lee Curtis' small role so visibly just to kill her off in the opening sequence.

Halloween: Resurrection apes off of its contemporaries without much success. There are fun B Movie moments, the showdown between Michael Myers and Busta Rhymes most infamously, but it's mostly just disposable. For this film to allude to Michael Powell's Peeping Tom with the POV tripod kill is honestly insulting lol. Especially after that indefensible cold open where it bends over backwards to make this fit into canon.

The reason this movie was destined to fail is that you can't really play Michael Myers for laughs. Jason has always been the campier one (haha) who could fit into a story like this. With that said, at least it's peculiar enough for me to want to revisit it. I can't say the same for all of this franchise's entries.

I liked it alot. It's just a valuable experience rather than a traditional movie. Just makes you contemplate the cycle of life, humanity and the world we live in. It's similar to 2001 and maybe Ki Duk Kim;'s Spring, Summer in that respect.

This was very camp and not very scary bar a few "flashed" scenes. Model moves into brownstone apartment as she's not ready for marriage and it has a gateway/portal to hell....so far so good. Some of the dreamy sequences/flashbacks are quite unnerving. Theres a particular scene where "the damned" are chasing the model through the house and they seem to be genuinely disfigured people.....its a bit sick TBH.

Directed by Michael Winner and with a rather eclectic cast ...Ava Gardner, Burgess Meredith , Eli Wallach, John Carradine. It, it just *has to be said* the scene of Beverly D'Angelo, errr, enjoying herself when the model meets her and her lesbian lover is nothing short of hilarious!!:D Funny, camp and at least with a strong story, an enjoyable 6/10.

I'm wondering why you thought the film was supposed to have any shock value in the first place, when it's more of a comedy than anything. I agree that certain characters performances were pretty bad, but for a $30 000 budget, they worked with what they had (still not an excuse though). I personally thought the film was a lot of fun, with its constant love letters to cinema, and interesting presentation.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (2010). 91/100.

You can call the story cartoonish or simplistic, but I don't care. Everything about the soundtrack, the humour, the action and especially the cinematography is full of this intoxicatingly fun gusto. It's the kind of poppy, energetic comedy that I see myself happily revisiting in the future. Plus, it reminded me of my tween years like no other movie ever has.

Very stylish and artful direction and the Jonny Greenwood soundtrack was superb.. Joaquin Phoenix is solid in this movie, John Wick hard.. he traces missing girls for a living but things go wrong when he goes up against a sinister paedophile ring .. but there is little movie here, more an exercise in film making... maybe I missed something, at the end I was more or less confused but it was nice to look at.

Nah, it was a dream or more accurately it was what he felt like at that moment particularly because he felt the young girl had abandoned him too, possibly that he was seriously contemplating it until she returned and saved him back. It's just like someone putting their finger to their head and pretending to shoot theirselves except Ramsay went further and actually showed it. She did a similar thing in Ratcatcher with the kids imagining the rats living on the moon. That's why there was no response by anybody in the diner, he was just resting his head as he was both physically and emotionally exhausted.

I don't know which one is worse. This entry or Rob Zombie's Halloween 2.

H20 was a great addition to the series and a competent ending, then they throw it all out the window with the sequel, appeal to a younger audience who don't care about the series and tried to 'shock' the viewer with that Scream opening. Resurrection is trash. Not even so bad it's good trash, just everyday trash.

I work for a company that supplied the film gear for this movie. I should really quit and say that their help in getting this movie made is the reason.

Day of the dead: Bloodline

4.5

Please explain. :p

I think its a good and well acted film. It's like all the other zombie films but there's a nice twist in this one. The CGI is probably a bit unrealistic with the blood splatters but I think it's a movie worth watching

It follows
5/10.
Would have been better if the monster was invisible to everyone ... and if the teenagers weren't so loose and clueless.

Didn't like the ending.

Wild Wild Country (2018)

Absolutely loved this. I knew nothing about the Rajneesh community so had no idea what I was going into and it just kept getting crazier and crazier as it went on. It was obvious a lot of work went into this and still did a decent job getting both points of view across to the viewer. Extra points are also awarded to the quite magnificent soundtrack!

The Evil Dead in Sweden. Group of kids head to an abandoned house for a little vacation. The first to arrives checks the place out and ventures to the basement where something evil is lurking. She becomes possessed and the rest plays out very similar to the Evil Dead. In fact, some of the cinematography is right out of Evil Dead (I mean that in a good way). Plenty of gooey red fluids, holes in heads and stretchy tendons to satisfy most gore hounds.

As far as 70's junk goes I really enjoyed this crime caper. It has questionable acting, sped up action sequences, sloooowwww mooowwwtiooon, cars blowing up, bad karate, romance montage and bikinis. Sondra Currie plays Bond...Lacy Bond - Prison Guard. After a female prison break in which Lacy single-handedly captures ALL but 2 inmates, she is recruited by the police force to hunt down the runaway inmates. The inmates return to their crime syndicate run by septuagenarian Maude and her much younger but still old weightlifting boyfriend (who delivers some of the films best bad dialogue) and the chase is on. Lacy, is the 70's version of Bo Jackson. Lacy knows...everything! Karate, guns, cars, how to balance work and "play", how to prepare a fabulous smorgasbord for your over matched/under trained male co-workers while on a stakeout, etc.

This movie is based on lizzie Borden. Jump scares at times. It's just like all the other ghost stories.

I was going to mention Ratcatcher too, because I see the same thing happenning there.
Surely you don't think that the ending in Ratcatcher is what actually happenned?

In my opinion, it's a fantasy type ending blurring the lines of reality. See also The Florida Project.

That's my take on it anyway. I really don't think the last 15 or 20 minutes of You were Never really there occurred as we see it on screen. But I guess people have different interpretations of everything.

Of course it's ambiguous, i'm not saying my interpretation is fact. I just completely reject it really happening because i find it boring. The other one goes much better with the dreamlike nature of the film and it shows you even though he's got his revenge he's still not at peace as he's having violent suicidal fantasies, i find that darker than him killing himself as that would at least end his suffering. It's still fantasy either way.

All her films have ambiguity, especially Morvern Callar. Just think it's better if it didn't happen.
