Blade Runner (The Final Cut)

I already gushed my own thread about this film, but I am really hard pressed to think of another film that has made an impression on me like the original Blade Runner did. Now, with the 2007 Final Cut, there are clean-ups and inserts that have "perfected" Ridley Scott's vision, and they haven't hampered anything about the original, in fact, they've very much enhanced the experience and bridged any erroneous bits while leaving the sometimes goofy charm intact, which I appreciate.

And while I do appreciate this latest installment of the Blade Runner sage in Blade Runner 2049, I just can not compare it any more to the original. Blade Runner (1982) came at a time when Spielberg was the internet and smart phone. To see glitzy graphics and far out worlds you had to go to the movies or read a really good book. Seeing this film again has me in awe. The music is second to none. Greek composer Vangelis, a long time progressive rock refuge, had spun an incredible tale with just his choice of sounds: glass, wind, rhodes piano, Yamaha cs-80 with ribbon pitch, jupiter 8, vocalizations by his long time collaborator Demis Roussos (R.I.P), and orchestra bells, chimes and tubes. It's like nothing that ever was or that has been since.

The visuals speak for themselves, as well. Any film modern day that has an amazing technological landscape sweeping below in an elegant, poetic 24fps motion with smoke, fire, city lights and burnt orange and purple sunset owes it all to Blade Runner. Cyber Punk, steam punk, new retro, hybrids,..all the design of Syd Mead and Ridley Scott, with many more in company helping plant the flags of urban science fiction style.

The cast is incredible; William Sanderson as the genetially challenged earth bound old man in the soul of a boy with his mechanical toys, Daryl Hannah with her mischievous eyes suggesting sex in the woods in back of the bleachers, Rutger Hauer's icy menace and warm hearted humor enabling Roy Batty to be one of the best villain turns in film history.

This is one superb film.

Wonder Woman

(Patty Jenkins)

Finally caught up with one of the most talked about films of this year, Wonder Woman. It is arguably, the best DCEU film so far and I think the WWI setting helped it out a lot too. Had the film been told in a more modern setting, the uniqueness of the story and her as a character would have been lost.

Diana saves the life of a American spy, who crashes his plane into the waters of her home world. He tells her of the great war, one she believes is the result of the God Ares. She joins him back in our world in an effort to stop Ares and save millions of lives.

Gal Gadot brings an sense of innocence to the role, which makes her character even more likeable than she was in Batman vs Superman. Here she leaves her home world and has to adjust to the life of a woman in ours. This is played for laughs here and there and an underused Lucy Davis helps with the comedy. Diana sees how men treat women, how women treat themselves and is left confused. Her fish out of water style story bits are amusing, but nothing new. It's Gadot's believability in the role that pushes the film forward and her chemistry with the underrated Chris Pine brings a more humanistic approach to this superhero tale.

I must admit though, the CGI in this film is pretty horrendous. Seeing the amazonian warriors jump around and fly off their horses was a little embarrassing. Nothing about what was shown felt real or whimsical. It was stuck in some kind of weird limbo where it looks awkward and fake. Then we get the more traditional superhero climax for the third act, something that literally could have been shot by Zack Snyder. The film loses some steam here with a predictable reveal and an uninteresting fight sequence.

I wanted more of her in the trenches. A smile crept across my face when she slowly climbed the ladder and ran into No Man's Land. The men look on in awe as she, beautiful and stunning, destroys the enemy. A highlight for the film for sure and had Jenkins spent more time here, would have really solidified the film as a whole. I didn't really get the sense of horror that WWI was and I think this was a missed opportunity.

Wonder Woman is an inspiration to little girls and I'm glad they have this character to look up to. Gadget seems game here and I look forward to what else she can bring to the table. I hope the sequel keeps up with the style and different era. There is nothing more boring than watching something you've already seen.

How so?
Don't think anyone would touch the screenplay with a bargepole in the current climate. Another year or two perhaps, but right now I doubt it.

Perhaps I should have just stuck with my original thought for the throwaway line which was "The original Mister Grey!" :D

Ratcatcher (1999)

Relentlessly bleak film set in 1970s Glasgow showing a young boy struggles living in these parts . This could easily have passed as a Ken Loach film, in particular Kes. The cast and the performances were really impressive and although it is depressing, it does have some humour, all be it, very dark. What I loved most about the film was that it genuinely seemed like it was made in the 70s. Everything from the dialogue between the characters, mostly the youngsters, down to the setting with the binmen strike. Despite the harsh setting of the film, there are still some really beautiful shots too.

Finally. This time I can say it is a really good movie of Woody Allen. I prefer when his movies are about poor people, who struggle with their problems, rather than made-up troubles of elite.
Wonder wheel is made as a theatre play and this is another thing I like about this movie. The dwelling of main characters is like a scene in theatre.
Kate Winslet was absolutely brilliant, just like Jim Belushi and even sir Justin was pretty good;)

Dance Baby Dance (Stephen Kogon): An inspirational feel-good film about a former tap dancer who after suffering a knee injury that took him out of his dream, decides to go on the comeback trail when he learns of an upcoming showcase that could lead to a one-year job for a touring dancing troupe. Kogon himself plays the dreamer Jimmy, who takes everything with a smile as his determination may have drawn fire from both his wife (who fears his injury will get the best of him) and the owner of the dance studio he trains in (who feels he is too old at this point), Jimmy is determined to make his dream come true by overcoming the odds.

There is also a bonding moment when his wife's niece, reeling from her parents' divorce, finds a kindred spirit in Jimmy due to their love of tap dancing. Their bonding scene pays homage to classic Astaire and perhaps a dash of Shirley Temple. It's a cute fun film with a message: with hard work, you can achieve your dreams.

This is the third movie I've seen after watching Lost in Translation last month and The Beguiled a couple of days ago. I think well of all of them and this is my favorite of the three. It's tragic and beautiful, while also being a nostalgic coming of age tale with a great soundtrack. Depending on who you are, you may identify with the boys, the girls, or the parents. I loved it.

THE DISASTER ARTIST
(2017)

The story of the weird guy named Tommy Wiseau who made that weird, and not to mention extremely terrible, movie titled The Room is quite frankly terrific and makes for great movie entertainment.

If you love movies like Ed Wood, you will absolutely love this one.

James Franco delivers an amazing performance as Wiseau. James's brother, Dave Franco, delivers an even better performance as Greg, the kid Tommy takes under his wing in search of the American dream and dreams of becoming movie stars, and his second lead star in the film.

The movie is hysterical and sad at the same time. Hysterical in that you are taking a candid look at the making of arguably the worst movie ever made, and sad in that the film has developed a strong cult following over the years.

Jesus Christ. That's what I said 5 minutes in and at the end. This is not a technically strong film but it's a lot of what I look for in the movie. Dennis Hopper was great; not over the top like he can often be, but believably messed up. This movie belongs to Linda Manz though. Her accent annoyed me a little in Days of Heaven, and I wasn't so sure about her performance here for awhile until everything came full circle. As it turned out, her performance was so compelling that I can't even picture the actress being different than the character. This movie will be scarred into my brain forever.

Spurred on by the reviews of "Out of the Blue" I decided to have a look at this curio. Dennis Hopper plays a Vietnam vet who's escorting an army friends body home for a hometown burial (on a train). It's clear the vet has some serious issues (told through brief flashbacks) and panicky episodes are interspersed with almost normal interaction with other travelers on the train, notably the mysterious Dean Stockwell.

The direction is a bit maniacally over the top but portrays the paranoia of the main protagonist well. It's fairly low budget but did keep me watching to the end. The final few shots really are a "WTF ?" moment! 3/5 and that's 0.5 for Hoppers performance who is truly mesmerising in this.

Rating a movie like this one is quite a challenge, mainly due to the fact that it has such a legacy. Let me be honest though, while the pacing is excellent and is well shot, there are moments when more than one actor let a smile come through that took me out of the movie.

That said, Gregory Peck in indispensable, and the movie remains well worth watching. Additionally, I would say that every performance has something special to it as well, and the standout for me was Brock Peters as Tom Robinson.

BUG

(William Friedkin)

https://i.imgur.com/1qKjgFW.jpg

3.5

Loneliness can be a depressive killing feeling that can make anyone go off the deep end. Bug examines the harsh realities of people who go through such a traumatic event, that their lives become a hollow shell of what it use to be. Billed as a horror film, I wouldn't necessarily call it that. Bug deals with the psychological trauma of losing a child, being a war vet and people with mental disorders. All wraped into a depressing and harrowing film that can make your skin crawl.

Agnes is a waitress who lives in a seedy motel room, essentially hiding from her abusive ex-husband who is out of prison. Her best friend brings over Peter and the two of them hit it off. Soon he is staying over because she enjoy the company. But Peter's paranoia about being followed by government officials and doctors eventually bleed into Agnes' own psyche. Soon the two hold themselves up in this motel room, shut off from the outside world while also believing that their room is now infested with bugs that burrow deep into their skin.

Based on the Tracy Letts play, which coincidentally stars Michael Shannon, Friedkin's Bug takes awhile to build up some of the crazy here. We are introduced to Ashley Judd, disheveled and constantly answering a ringing telephone with no one answering. Is the phone really ringing? Eagle-eyed people will see that the light never blinks on the phone and this is our introduction to not only her character, but the mental state of her character. The film makes an effort to brush it off quickly as we get to see her interact with others. Her addiction to drugs is a result of the disappearance of her child. Something that never really affected me before, but now that I myself am a father...terrifies the hell out of me.

She strikes up a relationship with Peter, he seems off from the beginning. But they eventually have sex, which is shot in a complete opposite way from the rest of the film. The scene feels clean, heavenly and something out of a romantic comedy, versus the dark, depressing and dirty feel of the rest of the film. Harry Connick Jr. shows up as the ex-husband and despite his intrusive behaviour, I never really felt like he posed a threat. We see a scene where he strikes her, but he leaves the picture pretty quickly.

The last half of this film, once the bug infestation ramps up, takes the film to levels of disgust that surprised me. The paranoia is high and Peter believes that these bugs burrow into his skin. He reveals his torso, which is covered in blood from his attempts to cut them out. In one of the more disturbing scenes he thinks one is under the cavities in his teeth, I'll let you think about what happens after that.

Both Shannon and Judd give sympathetic and real performances here. They both have monologues with lightning fast dialogue about conspiracy theories and why they can't leave this room, or why the bugs are here in the first place. Knowing that there are people out there with this mental state is depressing and both Shannon and Judd sell their performances extremely well. They bare it all on the screen, literally. Friedkin isn't afraid to make you feel disgusted, claustrophobic and confused. The film mostly takes place at this motel and despite the limited scenery, Friedkin manages to change up the look and feel of this motel as the film progresses.

Bug is a terrifying look inside the mind of depressed and mentally unstable people. Don't watch this while your in bed, you might think that something is crawling up your leg at one point.

Saoirse Ronan really is a terrific actor. Playing the complicated teenager here, she was immense. I'll be interested to see how this movie does over here in UK though, I cant see it doing as well as in USA.

I wouldn't recommend this for fans of the original movie. I don't care about tradition or expanding the story; I just came for the violence and gore, and in that regard it didn't disappoint. Unfortunately there wasn't much else interesting about the movie and it lacked tension.

This was my first Zvyagintsev film all i had heard about him was his films are relentlessly bleak, and yeah that's accurate. Couldn't get into this at first, it was mainly the pacing and i wasn't finding anything different from any other in the middle of a divorce film. It was when they went to Zhenya's mothers that everything clicked, from then the hopelessness and despair was crushing. Powerful film.

I already knew a fair amount of this films plot since a Sopranos episode features it heavily. Cagney was as great as always but i thought this was just okay personally, probably the weakest of the four Cagney gangster films i've seen. Still i'm a massive fan of Cagney now and can't wait to see more of his work.

Garbage. My gf wanted to watch this for some reason, i was expecting bad but this was somehow worse than i could imagine. I love Charlie Day in It's Always Sunny so much but he's terrible in both this and Horrible Bosses; in both he is basically Charlie Kelly when he tries to act professional except played straight and it's horrific to watch. Then Ice Cube was unbelievably one note, i could guess his one joke when they introduced him as a bad ass and yeah they didn't deviate from that at all. There was a few chuckles here and there but the vast majority wasn't funny there were barely any actual jokes just unfunny character traits that were established then beating into the ground. So bad, worst of 2017 so far.

https://alchetron.com/cdn/Love-and-Honor-images-70f85915-551e-43bd-922a-83f7938e0c1.jpg

this was really good, solid traditional melodrama. eventho' predictable, i like the story a bit more rather than previous yoji yamada's samurai trilogy. it followed the previous pattern where the protag is a low class ranking samurai -for romance, this time got a stunning wife, as center of the plot- , not much a "standout" swordman -but usually had peculiar habit and skill- with unique task by their clan. this man got one of the absurd, "poison tester" for their lord meal and dinner.
the climax for the little, minimalist action probably not so good in comparison, probably because the progress of his training kinda fast paced, and the "handicapped" condition certainly limited this from more striking choreo
at the end it just turn ordinary and the romance resolved just like that as happy ending as it could be. i like if it add more tragic element.

3.5 - this probably the best of Kiyutaku i'd seen so far, embodied his tragic character. weird fact that i read his agency halted his name at the time from some nomination of prestigious awards in japan, for what i must said, a really stupid reason.

visually stunning. score-wise, there few(few(just few)) parts that really really interesting. but overall it just summary of horrible writing, what a waste of intriguing cast. the twist and intricate through the end did light this one up, only it still cant add more to it life expectacy, after such messy build up.

It's giving a stage to toxic rhetoric and views. I mean one of the most prominent MRM members who is featured in the doc has said he wouldn't convict a man of rape even if there was overwhelming evidence against him. There's definitely struggles for men and they could fight for their issues alongside feminists but the MRM is cancerous, nuke it and start again without all the misogyny and rape apology.

I didnt think much of this either other than I really like the leads and the scenery was lovely. Didnt give me the sense of impending doom the survival genre gives me or the space between men and women. I also found the sound a bit off - once again either whispery moments I couldnt hear or booming score (not as bad as in some other movies but put enough of a strain on my ears and I missed some dialogue)

Mary And Max

Unfortunately, in America, babies are not found in cola cans. I asked my mother when I was four, and she said they came from eggs laid by rabbis. If you aren't Jewish, they're laid by Catholic nuns. If you're an atheist, they're laid by dirty, lonely prostitutes.

Mary is a lonely, eight-year-old girl living in the suburbs of Melbourne who has a poo coloured birth mark on her head and Max is a forty-four-year old, severely obese man living in New York who's invisible friend Mr. Ravioli sit's in the corner and reads.. they both love Noblets and start an unlikely correspondence through letters that spans 20 years in this enchanting Claymation with the voices of Philip Seymour Hoffman and Toni Collette.

She does. I found The Dark Knight something of a blip though, which isn't to say she wasn't good in it. I just thought she was a bit wasted.

Beautiful looking film, and Oldman was amazing.

The thing that impresses me is them getting Ben Mendelsohn to play George VI. I was taken aback when I saw him in a clip one day because – and we've had this conversation before Dani – they'd gone to the trouble of finding someone who has a more than passable resemblance to the man.

Kristin was as well and I'm not overly fond of her.

I am ;D.

Still stunning on every rewatch, and Winona and Keanu's accents are still rotten.

They were terrible weren't they. I liked the Family Guy skit on Ryder in The Age of Innocence, where they had her saying "That is most good Newland. Most good".

Sir Tony is as sexy as ever. 'I'll cut off her head and take out her heart'.

It's funny in the behind-the-scenes material for Dracula where he really takes Winona Ryder by surprise in the scene where their characters first meet. The little dance with Mina was, I think, a spur of the moment thing from Hopkins as Ryder bursts out laughing at the end of it – and they obviously replicated it for the film.

And I love this too. I actually saw this on broadcast:

She does. I found The Dark Knight something of a blip though, which isn't to say she wasn't good in it. I just thought she was a bit wasted.

I agree. She was perfect, and gorgeous, but it looks out of place.

The thing that impresses me is them getting Ben Mendelsohn to play George VI. I was taken aback when I saw him in a clip one day because – and we've had this conversation before Dani – they'd gone to the trouble of finding someone who has a more than passable resemblance to the man.

Not bad at all, wasnt it. I didnt hear his aussie accent slip up either.

I can believe that. One of my total favourites, and

And I love this too. I actually saw this on broadcast:

That's good – I want to see him and Rooney Mara in Una.

It really took me by surprise :). He's got the character of "Tony" as well as nailing his voice. Ben Kingsley did a good impression of Hopkins a few years ago as well but Gary's is my favourite.

Somehow, the fact that I was backtracking after seeing the sequel first didn't take away from my enjoyment any. It was a thrill ride for sure, and despite the lack of my favorite character (a certain redhead), I enjoyed it every bit as much as that entry. I seriously kept muttering, "Come on, hit the son of a bitch." during the last fight with the fifth Angel and fist-pumped when Shinji finally did. Later, guys. I gotta go mop. Not like my sister's gonna do it, anyway.

Very average. I've got the feeling, it was attempt to copy Sherlock Holmes. Romain Duris is not hot IMO, so his charm as a cute thief, doesn't work.
Kristin Scott Thomas is incredibly beautiful. She look in this movie the same as in "Four weddings..." or even better. Ava Green as a good character? That's something new.

Ignoring the fact that Aisholpan isn't actually the first(except in her family) or only female eagle huntress in that part of the world, and that the views from the men who are against women taking part in such things are actually quite mellow, this is still a fascinating and beautiful documentary.

National Lampoon's European Vacation. The Griswold's win an all expenses paid vacation around Europe on a game show and are soon causing chaos wherever they go in this entertaining mid 80s comedy with Chevy and company. It's a bit episodic, as as inevitable, and the ending is a bit OTT, but Chevy and the gang are as amusing as ever and there's some big laughs and some amusing cameos from some Brit comedy legends including Mel Smith, Robbie Coltrane, Maureen Lipman and Eric Idle. Good fun.:)

I watched A Short Film About Killing last year after I saw it on a disturbing movies list. It was disturbing, but also very good so I looked up the director. I found out it was the acclaimed director who did the colors trilogy and a bunch of other famous crap. I decided to watch this next. I think this caught me off guard and that it's better than I'm currently rating it. A 19yo boy is spying on the milf across the street with his telescope and he falls in love. He ramps things up until they meet and then it's an interesting dynamic from there. I thought it was a subtly melancholic and powerful film.

The Mother (2003)

Director: Roger Michell
Writer: Hanif Kureishi
Staring: Anne Reid, Peter Vaughan, Daniel Craig, Cathryn Bradshaw
Music: Jereym Sams
Cinematography: Alwin H. Kuchler

We watched The Mother last night (not to be confused with the reportedly dreadful Mother!). This is not only a superb dramatic production, but it is also another example of a film which would exemplify an "A" rating (for "Adult themes").

Anne Reid was stunning in her role as May, an elderly widow who falls into an affair with her son's friend (Daniel Craig). The friend is also being wooed by May's daughter, which unfolds dramatic suspensefulness as the film plays out.

The acting couldn't have been better, with Reid winning the BAFTA award that year. Cathryn Bradshaw as May's daughter fleshed out a stereophonic portrayal of a distinctly English woman who is fearful that her youth and chance to have children are passing her by. Daniel Craig, in a pre-Bond role, is convincing as an irresponsible man who, despite being married, retains his immaturity and debauching lifestyle.

This is the type of production that the British seem to pride themselves on: first-rate character acting, and comparatively low budgeting. Reportedly the film cost only £1.5 million to make.

OTOH it wasn't so much the story, as the acting, that took this one over the top.

I noticed that Director/writer team of Roger Michell and Hanif Kureishi have worked together on several films: Morning Glory, Hyde Park on Hudson, and Le Week-End I'd like to see if any of their other stuff is as good.

The Little Hours (2017) rating_4

https://www.movieforums.com/community/attachment.php?attachmentid=40304

I am being overly generous with my rating for a number of reason, but I already recognize that it drags at points, and while it starts and ends strongly, the movie would have benefited from a "stronger" script. By this I mean that each character should have had more focused dialogue. Comedic, or otherwise.

I gave The Little Hours a 4 because I really enjoyed the way the story was told, and that it mostly uses modern speech while retaining traditional set pieces. Nearly all of the drama was done with aplomb by the cast, which consists largely of actors known for comedic fair.

Additionally, while I was watching The Little Hours I couldn't help but to notice that it had similarities to a film that I was looking for in the Movie Questions sub-forum. A nineties(?) movie which was similar to Teorema by Pasolini.

Teorema is about a stranger who visits a family and completely changes their lives during his stay with them. In The Little Hours, a man comes to a convent and effectively does the same thing, albeit differently.

While I admit that they are not entirely similar, Teorema does seem to take inspiration from the story The Little Hours was inspired by, which was the third day of The Decameron anthology.

Both Teorema (1968) and a version of The Decameron (1971) were directed by Pier Pasolini. The main reason why I wanted to find out about the nineties(?) movie was to see if I could find out what might have been the literary inspiration of it and Teorema.

...and I watched The Little Hours on a fluke. I had wanted to see more good movies that featured Aubry Plaza, and thought the trailer was amusing enough when I stumbled into it several months back. So, in some wicked fashion, I perhaps struggle to rate the movie without giving it some form of credit for this strange discovery.

Anyhow, if you want to see Aubry Plaza in a good comedy that plays to her strengths, The Little Hours can provide you with what all that you need [sic].

Apparently my diction fails me.

Sandler can act and has always been capable in my eyes. Everytime he does a serious role, many respond, "hey Billy Madison is all grown-up."

He has been flexing dramatic chops for a while, but his typecast never fades. Robin Williams started as zany comedy guy, but is remembered as much for his serious roles , if not more. Yea I stole that.

THE FLORIDA PROJECT
(2017)

This is probably the most special live action movie I've seen this year. It's a beautifully made, well-written, amazingly acted, heart-wrenching tale of ordinary people living in their everyday hell struggling to get by in a seemingly meaningless existence in the area adjacent to Disney World, the most magical and happiest place on earth and the place of children's dreams. The center of the movie focuses on the mischievous 6-year old girl named Moonee, played by the adorable newcomer Brooklynn Prince, who lives in a motel with her jobless young mother, played by newcomer Bria Vinaite, who goes around doing odd jobs, like soliciting perfumes and stolen items to tourists in local motels, bumming free food from her waitress neighbor, and advertising herself for prostitution to make ends meet. Moonee, unaware of her mother's troubles, hangs out with other kids that live at the same motel and at a nearby motel, causing problems.

The reason I mentioned Prince and Vinaite's names is because I feel this movie has turned them into overnight sensations. I've read that Vinaite has never had any acting experience. She was discovered by the movie's director after he saw pictures of her on Instagram.
Another actor in the film I need to highlight is veteran actor Willem Dafoe, who plays the motel's manager, a sweet and caring father figure type to Moonee and her mother even when they get involved in bad things. Dafoe deserves an Oscar for his scene-stealing performance here. Vinaite and Prince deserve Oscar nominations.

Beautiful looking film, and Oldman was amazing. Kristin was as well and I'm not overly fond of her.

...
I agree with you about Oldman's Churchill, although I found myself being more conscious of Oldman's portrayal itself --its mechanics, its nuances-- instead of its dramatic impact. The film was really focused more on the character study rather than its story.

The film would have had greater effect had it been released a few years ago. It seems that there have been several movies or series featuring Churchill (e.g. The Crown, with Lithgow as Churchill) in the past year or two. And of course Dunkirk covered the same event, but from the soldier's point of view.

It's doubtful that the respective producers of DA and Dunkirk intended the two films to enhance one another, so the timing may have just been one of those cinematic coincidences. But in my view Dunkirk lessened the impact of Darkest Hour.

It'll be interesting to see if the other films and Churchill portrayals will weaken the tea, and taint Oldman's chances for winning awards.

Churchill (2017)

I watched this the other night...and what a tabloid piece of crap this movie is.

Most of the movie is composed of WAY over the top music that splits your ear drums and LOTS of beautiful scenery at the beach and in the woods, you know pretty stuff that makes you think you're watching something special.

But and this is a big but, there's nothing to the story...no meat, no insight, nada. It's a crummy script padded out to movie length with long takes and silly scenes of Churchill acting like an infant. I've seen several lengthy documentaries on Churchill and the man we see in the film is not the real Churchill. He's presented here as a cartoon caricature.

Much later in his life he did become a fumbling, foolish old man who wasn't always in charge of his own intellect. But during WWII his mental facilitates were as sharp as a tack, and he was known to work around the clock and was quite detail orientated. In other words he was on the ball! Not like the stumbling weak fool this movie shows us. If I want to see such silly fabrications, I'll read a tabloid rag.

I got the impression his son (River Phoenix) wanted him to invent for a living (is that what you mean, or do you mean the real person it was based on? In which case, No) but knew his father was too insanely egotistical to do it.

Harrison Ford is so intensely unlikable in this, unlike Viggo Mortensen in Captain Fantastic IMO. Viggo's character was an idealist trying to make good for his kids and his wife's memory, but Allie's head was just so far up his colon he was a dreadful father and husband. Just my opinion, ofcourse, and possibly why Harry never took on another villain role outside of What Lies Beneath. I have read this is his favourite role, though.

I don't know to think about this one. During all movie I had a feeling I'm watching neighbours of kids from American Honey. These story are so similar... Maybe The Florida Project is more interesting because of little actore, who made absolutely amazing job.
The character played by Willem Defoe is also special. He is a guardian angel for all lost souls living in the violet motel. Great appearance.

Sounds interesting! I might have to watch it.

I went to see it randomly a little bit and it turned out unexpectedly good.

There is a great charity projectmade on one sunday of January, called Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity. In whole Poland has been organized gigs, marathons, meetings, performances during which volunteers raise money for medical equipment/devices to Polish hospitals. In one of the cracows cinemas was played "Maudie" today. Regular tickets weren't sold, everyone could just give the money (the amount wasn't state) to the volunteer (here was little girl, about 6 years old, with her mom).

The Postman Always Rings Twice (1981). The first time I've seen this movie surprisingly, I've heard about it but never got around to watching it until last night. Jack Nicholson and Jessica Lange were good as they usually are, I thought it was an interesting and steamy drama. It was a bit dark and there was plenty of sexual tension and obsession involved. Definitely worth seeing. 3.5/5.

My wife picked this out after seeing the trailer last week, and anytime she shows interest in a movie, I better jump on it. I'd say it's average at best, but for me what it has going against it the most is the existing of Alien (1979). There is no way I can watch a movie like this without making an unfair comparison to a movie it can never come close to. Alien set a standard that will probably never be matched. The monster/alien in this movie was actually pretty cool and scary, and there is some tension. However, most if it is completely forgettable and unremarkable. What puzzles me most is Jake Gyllenhall starring. He usually plays standout roles and there was never going to be anything special about this one.

I haven't seen the film, although it's generally thought to be awful. But what tickles me is that the film which I did see, about the making of The Room, The Disaster Artist, is itself dreadful, save for its technical merit. Yet it's considered by many to be wonderful..

Will it be long before film makers catch on to this road to success? Simply make an inexpensive turkey, than make a film ABOUT making the rotten movie, and the critics will love it! What a pertinent way to assist the current film industry's slide into the muck. Surely we'll see more of this..:D

Showdown in Manila: The directorial debut of Mark Dacascos (90's action star turned Iron Chef America chairman), this is a fun throwback to the 90's B-movie action film which stars Alexander Nevsky and Casper Van Dien as two detectives tasked with seeking a warlord called The Wraith on behalf of a woman (Tia Carrere) whose husband (Dacascos) was killed by the Wraith. Nevsky's character seeks revenge on the Wraith for a mission in which he almost was killed by him and his team. When the duo discover where he is hiding, Nevsky gets some allies in the form of 90's action stars Don "The Dragon" Wilson, Cynthia Rothrock, and Olivier Gruner on an all-out war in the jungle. Short fights, light comedy, but a fun 90's throwback IMO. I also interviewed Alexander Nevsky (https://worldfilmgeek.com/2018/01/15/time-for-a-showdown-in-manila-wfg-goes-round-2-with-alexander-nevsky/) about the film...this is the second time I've talked with him...great guy! :)

Mom and Dad: From Brian Taylor, who is known for his collaborations with Mark Neveldine (Crank, Ghost Rider 2), comes this tale that is reminiscent of The Purge: a worldwide mass hysteria that lasts 24 hours causes parents to go postal and violent on their own kids. Nicolas Cage (in one of his craziest roles IMO) and Selma Blair (who IMO goes against type) are great as the titular Mom and Dad with Anne Winters being a future scream queen as their daughter. I did interview Anne Winters (https://worldfilmgeek.com/2018/01/16/fighting-mom-and-dad-an-interview-with-anne-winters/) about the film, about how much fun she had making the film.

Watched this one the other night, which was recommend to me by @cricket (http://www.movieforums.com/community/member.php?u=68505)...thanks bro!

I'd never even heard of this movie, which is odd as it's a fun watch...and has lots of big name stars in it. Patrick Dempsey is a college kid who's partying too hard and so dad stops paying his tuition...forcing him to get a job at this Mexican themed pizza place, Senor Pizza.

Somehow he meets a beautiful rich woman who wants a one night stand and she pays him $200.00 which he saves so he can get back to college and his girlfriend...

So then the funny thing is all these hot babes are calling the pizza place asking for him to special deliver a pizza with extra anchovies;), which is the code word...Sounds fishy:p but he end's up become a gigaloo, which reminded me of Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo (1999 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0205000/)) another funny flick.

So back to the babes, there's lots of them! A young Kirstie Alley, and Barbara Carrera and Kate Jackson is his mom. I was keen on seeing this for Carrie Fischer, who has a smaller part but it was great to see her, and she's funny in this too. A fun watch, sort of like a time machine back to 1989.

I, TONYA
(2017)

The rags-to-riches-to-rags tragic and often funny true story of disgraced U.S. figure skating champion Tonya Harding, played remarkably by Margot Robbie.
The movie follows Tonya from the time she was a skating sensation at the very young age of 4 all the way through her professional skating years, her violent and troubled marriage to Jeff Gillooly, played by Sebastian Stan, to the whole Nancy Kerrigan incident that ultimately ended her career.

The one notable performance in the film, aside from Robbie's, belongs to Allison Janney who plays Tonya's abusive and extremely vulgar and heartless mother. And what I found entertaining about the movie is it's soundtrack and the directing style of Craig Gillespie where he constantly inserts scenes where the characters break the fourth wall.

Thanks!
If you look at Janney's filmography, you'll see that she has been in numerous films, some of which are really big movies. The one performance I remember her from is American Beauty where she plays Colonel Fitt's catatonic wife, Lester's neighbors and the parents of Ricky.

She won the Best Supporting Actress award at the Golden Globes for her performance in I, Tonya last week and I can see why. She steals every scene she's in, and boy is her character brutal.

It's always the damaged toxic people that make for a highly entertaining movie. The way the director made this movie, you'll feel good and bad for Tonya at the same time; you'll laugh and cry at how her life ended up when there was so much promise. Tragic tale with a twist sort of thing.

She made me really uncomfortable, and I'm not so precious that it was her filthy language. It was her desperate need to control and yes, I did feel happy and sad for Tonya at the same time because of her. Goes to show how easy it is to screw up kids.

I saw someone complain about this movie saying why do they make movies about losers rather than winners. Because we all have strains of human frailty and it makes us relate.

I felt so bad when I saw an open letter to the public from Tonya and her last line was that she wasnt a bad mother - something like that. It was like a kick in the stomach. Obviously I dont know if she did or didnt do it but I came away from that movie wanting her to finally be happy. That look on Margot's face when she's forcing the winner smile is so tragic.

The best band ever, of course they can make a film!
And of course it's awesome from first to last.

"Comfortably numb", "Another brick in the Wall" and "The Trial" are my favorites parts. It's a shame that "Hey You" wasn't in the movie but well...

I'm very happy to look to my tickets everytime I open my closet, I'm going to see Roger Waters in october (God, is so far...), already sold off!

That's great - I saw Roger 3x - went to some long distances... Dark Side twice, and The Wall.... ELO is touring around that time, too.

Let me know what you think? :)

I, Tonya - 7.5/10

Even though I saw the "30 for 30" ESPN documentary, and liked it, I didn't think to watch this movie until I saw all the positive feedback here. Very enjoyable movie, well made. Some funny stuff - "Death threat's off!" (LOL)..

Doesn't hurt to have the best songs of the 70's either!

P.S. - While I was watching it, I was reminded of "To Die For" (Nicole Kidman) and just saw it was from the director of "Lars and the Real Girl" - also a good movie.

- I like every Insidious movie and this one was enjoyable even though it was the weakest of them all. Actors are alright, Script is decent at best and the score is still very nice. If you’re a fan of the first three you should like this one too. Lin Shaye is a nice actress.

~Doc

No, we won't. People cared about The Room because it's a sincere attempt at drama that fails in such a fashion that it ends up being more than just another bad movie - it's the sincerity that people ultimately respond to, whether to make fun of it or because they treat it as outsider art (and the weird back-story from The Disaster Artist certainly helps in that regard). As a result, you can't make a bad movie simply for the sake of making a good movie about the bad movie - people won't respond to the bad movie because it's insincere, so they won't care about the good movie either. I say this as someone who thought that The Disaster Artist itself was quite average since it takes the weirdness of The Room and uses it to fuel a generic Hollywood comedy. So relax, it's not going to be a trend or anything.

Last movie I watched...

Rewatched Blade Runner 2049 last night on Blu-ray, and wow, now I think that, while far from perfect, in some ways it might be as good, if not better than the 1982 movie. Everything just clicked a lot better this time, with all the aspects of the movie - the visuals, the story, the emotional side of it (which sort of failed to hit me the first time) - finally falling into the right place. The lighting and use of color, in particular, are staggering.

The Post 4.0/5.0 :walter: (read: 4 out of 5 Walters)

This is what I originally gave the movie in my review, but I'm thinking of lowering the rating to a 3.5/5.0 :walter:

The acting was good, but only Meryl Streep's performance was standout. I don't fault Tom Hanks for this--I'm not sure that he was given much to work with.

The story was also not as interesting as it seems the producers thought it was. I was mildly interested going into the movie and my interest only increased as the movie went on for the sake of Katharine Graham who was brought to life by Streep.

Borg McEnroe: The story of one of tennis' greatest rivalries that culminated at the 1980 Wimbledon finals, between Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe as despite being rivals on the court, they are actually quite similar in terms of their upbringing to achieve winning and perfection. Great performances by Sverrir Gudnason (who will play Mikael Blomkvist in The Girl in the Spider's Web) and Shia LeBeouf (I smell comeback as he was perfect in the role). I thought the film would focus more on Borg considering this is a Scandinavian production, but Ronnie Sandahl's script wisely gives nearly equal screen time for both titular roles.

This one looks intriguing. The one turn-off might be Shia LeBeouf, whose off-screen behavior and antics have damaged his public image and hurt his movie career.

I'll still check it out, though.

That's exactly why he was perfect to play John McEnroe :) Think about it...McEnroe's antics on the court back in the day is in par with LaBeouf's public image. Couldn't have found more better casting LOL :D
