To each their own, The Guest made my top ten of that year. I'm more into genre flicks though, so it felt right up my alley.

I don't think it's fair to characterize my problems with it as problems with genre films. I'm a huge fan of horror, just not Wingard's brand from what I've been exposed to.

Cemetery of Splendour (2015, Apichatpong Weerasethakul)
4.5

Cinema as a trance, a meditation, a door to another reality. Weerasethakul sticks to his guns and produces another deeply personal, mysterious film that eludes interpretation. All the usual trademarks are there - the hypnotic pace, almost complete absence of music, static camera, next to no close-up shots, and an eerily ethereal, serene atmosphere that envelops it all. Weerasethakul belongs to that special cohort of filmmakers that strive to get to the core of things by looking at the most basic, mundane things possible - because that's where so much of the mystery lies.

Great visuals and Laurence Fishburne died too soon to be good, other than that average popcorn movie that i don't want to see twice. They shouldn't cast Jennifer Lawrence on this, she was just shrieking like street cat.

I remember really liking this as a kid. Looking at it now, it's pretty slow and not even a cat and mouse type of chase that I remembered. Even for a cold as ice assassin, Willis shows zero enthusiasm here. Irish accent is terrible, Willis looks funny in all his disguises and it feels very dated. Points off for terrible stereotyped Canadian accent.

Looking at Bruce Willis' career on Rottentomatoes, the guy hasn't had a well received film since 2012's Looper. He's on the Sandler and DeNiro train of not giving a crap.

Just finished Solace. Loved the actors, good dynamic n the relationships, nice twist, and very stylised which I found easy on the eye. Score and colour grading didnt leave me rocking in the corner. I give this a rating of very entertaining.

Great, wasnt it, but very distressing. Mads as always was brilliant, and so was the little girl. Those two had such a great dynamic.

The movie seemed like a complete waste of a great opportunity. I actually think Pratt stood out the most in this (not in a good way). He just can't seem to pull off a purely dramatic scene. Lawrence, on the other hand, pulled her character off fairly well for the most part. To be honest, the writing itself was what made the film bad in my opinion. It was very silly and vapid. A great example would be that Laurence Fishburne scene. Bringing him in to solely be a catalyst for them was a wasteful move. Let's not forget that speech he gave right before he died.

you see, now i understand why i didn't even bother to mention Pratt. He was so flat, no emotions. Lawrence was pushing on scenes overdoing them as if to make it out for Pratt :) , and yes writing was lacking something. the way of Fishburne's arrival on scene was odd, like they skipped pages from the screenplay

Train to Busan. A workaholic, distant father is taking his little girl on a bullet train to see her mother (his ex-wife) when a zombie outbreak kicks off (hate it when that happens :P ) and they soon find themselves on an express train ride to Hell. Exciting and scary South Korean action-horror, though it perhaps goes on a bit too long.

Serpico 1973

The true story of Frank Serpico, a New York city cop that shows great integrity by standing up for his principles in the face of overwhelming opposition from his superiors an colleagues, alienating himself in the process.

Superb from Pacino.

The rest of the cast was quite mixed, with some believable performances and some quite wooden ones.

Overall, it was a well made film that made it easy to feel the tension of the situation and the conflict, both internal and external of the main characters.
Well worth a watch but the standout factor is the performance of Pacino.

Who were the actors you thought were wooden? I remember thinking the same about the first woman he meets, with blonde hair, the one who tells Serpico in the tub that she's getting married (what commitment!)

Yes, I thought she was painful. I thought some of the cops when they were threatening him were almost laughable.

Funny and very entertaining. I enjoyed it and I will consider buying the dvd just to support low-budget movies of this caliber. Belushi is funny in a couple of scenes. Leguizamo finally stops flapping his gums in a role and channels the Terminator. McShane is McShane. Wilson plays the not so bright sheriff who uses a blow torch to search for armour piercing bullets hidden in car parts. That scene was hillarious.:yup: It's surprising that his character gets to survive for as long as he does, in this story.

Night Train (Kawalerowicz, 1959) 4
http://i.imgur.com/4AeaAoz.jpg

Kawalerowicz cleverly uses the claustrophobic interiors of a passenger train to explore the longing and intimacy inseparable from social experience. The Hitchcockian aspects serve as mere window dressing, though the heinous deed at the heart of the pseudo-thriller is fittingly the gravest betrayal of love. The tension and adrenaline, should you feel any, aren't half as powerful as the poignant little sketches and exchanges which reveal our desire for connection as well as our trouble with rejection. The vocal jazz motif is almost as haunting as the conclusion.

Before I Wake. A young couple still grieving the death of their young son foster another child, a child who turns out to have strange powers. When he sleeps, his dreams become reality. Dreams that start out with butterflies and manifestations of their lost child, and then start to become far more sinister... This 2016 horror flick from director Mike Flanagan is entertaining enough, well made and acted with some effective imagery and a clever resolution, but it lacks any real menace and is definitely my least favourite from him thus far.

An under the radar slasher that didn't feel like a typical slasher, maybe because of the lead character. He does some terrible things, namely blowtorching chicks, but he seemed more human to me than the average villain from one of these movies. Good use of disco music and I enjoyed it.

Okay, that's it! Enough people have commented positively on this zombie movie that I will buy it first chance I get. I'm getting really jazzed, especially since this season of TV's The Walking Dead is coming to an end in a few weeks. Brainnnssss!!

About Elly (2009, Asghar Farhadi)
4.5

A gripping story about how a seemingly harmless lie can snowball to tragic consequences, especially in the context of a highly restrictive, traditional society like Iran's. Farhadi doesn't need to resort to credibility-stretching events or mindblowing twists to get his point across - he just tells a real-life story with real-life tensions, fears and doubts, and does it masterfully. Tight direction, excellent acting by the entire cast, great cinematography - just shy of a masterpiece but an all-round winner, nonetheless.

The trend is and always has been, when you have a successful comedy, make a sequel with similar jokes because people will still laugh at redundant crap. The Austin Powers series is guilty of recycling the same jokes over and over, with a bit of a spin on each one, they still seem to be funny. With Rogen and Efron's comedy sequel, the spin is they swapped genders of the party goers and that's about it.

Mac and Kelly are expecting another child and need to move into a bigger house. The new buyers for their home are hesitant and the house is in escrow for 30 days. This means the new buyers can drop by at anytime and pull out for any reason. No problem, right? Wrong. The old frat house next door is now a sorority house for some young girls who dislike the sexist ways fraternities throw their parties. Can Mac and Kelly shut down yet another party house before the new buyers suspect anything?

The original opened to just under $50 million, the sequel opened to roughly $21 million. Is this because people are tired of uninspired, lazy and unneeded sequels? I sure hope so because there is no logical reason for this film to exist. Story-wise, the film is a been there done that retread of funnier jokes from before. Rogen continues to give us his stoner laugh character that he's been doing for years now and Efron continues his streak of hot guy frat boy. The dynamic of their relationship is different this time around, as Efron is viewed as "too old" from the sorority girls and he teams up with Rogen. The one interesting factor here is how Efron can't seem to move forward in life, despite all his friends having successful lives and careers. He's stuck in the past and blames others.

Rose Byrne continues to be a highlight, even when she is given less to do this time around. Efron's old frat buddies have one or two scene cameos that amount to the same joke over and over. Finally there's the couple friends, played by Ike Barinholtz and Carla Gallo, who are called back into helping them get rid of the girls. They are also expecting and showcase the single gross out scene of the whole film featuring a baby's foot. Yuck.

While I did get some laughs here and there, that's mainly due to the comedy chops of the main cast. Chloë Grace Moretz is surprisingly flat and uninteresting, as are her sisters. The film offers nothing new and continues to play to the young party crowd. I'd say I was disappointed, if I didn't already expect it to be mediocre at best. try re-watching the original before giving this one a try.

Efron being out of place everywhere was the best comedic thread. Anywho, I thought the movie was well fun. I did not see the first instalment, but I have this notion in my mind that the first one was more straight forward as I imagine everybody started exactly where they were going to be by the end.

I saw it at another time a few years later, and then a few months ago, I saw it again, and I gave it an 8 or 9, I loved it, and I find that with all the Cassavetes movies - they keep getting better and better. I think part of it might be due to the fact he never spoon-fed the audience, and I always discover new stuff.

The Light Between Oceans (2016) 3

The movie is about this enormous moral dilemma. Characters are torn between sadness and anger. Their conscience was truly speaking to them each with a different approach to the issue. Even I was torn between sympathy and disagreement. Up until now everything played to my cards. However screenplay and directing was torn between too many aspects. The cast was excellent. I could see the true emotions but why to do so much underlining of emotions? Let's say there is an emotion expressed by story itself, plus the same emotions expressed by an actor and on top of it the emotion is underlined by change of weather or different shot of ocean, landscape and such. I don't find this emotional crescendo necessary. Also, I haven't read the novel, but I think the story in the book is more extensive and it is not always possible to make a picture of all of it. Well, I think, Derek Cianfrance tend to squeeze all of it in 133 minutes. It was too packed.

Summa summarum, the story was interesting, cast did their best, visuals were beautiful however the execution of the movie went wrong. It didn't reach out to me how this kind of story supposed to.

Too Late Blues is the best movie about music -- strongly urge to see it. It was made in the studio, still great, but he went independent after this starting with "Faces"

John didn't even want his name on "Big Trouble" -- Peter Falk was starring in the movie, and they fired the original director in mind, and Peter asked John to do it as a favor, and John took it (probably for medical bills, since he was dying) but part of the deal was to put in his name. Stanley Kramer did the same thing -- weasel.

The Light Between Oceans (2016)

I watched this last night, I found it only average. Visually it was artistically beautiful, with it's muted earth tone colors and soft diffusion look. The story premise too, of a man and his wife alone on a remote island tending a lighthouse, was very promising. This is the type of movie I love.

But the director/writer never really made me feel like I was privy to the lives of the couple. I never felt their emotions (at least for the first half of the film anyway). We see snippets of the character's lives but the moments in between, that are so important for developing finesse, are often missing. I never felt a connection to the characters as the scenes are too brief and mainly function on a surface level. I wanted a deeper existential film and this ain't it.

Suspect, I'd seen the movie this past weekend and agree that the scene you talked about above is very gross, but I couldn't help but laugh, maybe out of shock. I watched this, having not seen the first film. I don't like Seth Rogen at all, and only halfway tolerate Zac Efron, but I like Rose Byrne, Carla Gallo, and Chloë Grace Moretz. So I watched and agree with most of what you said, so feel no need to really rehash it. The one thing I will say is that there are two gross-out scenes. The one you mentioned, and the one during Efron's dance to distract the girls from Rogen stealing their stash. Something that we see from behind drops out of his shorts and is pretty damn gross. Just saying. :)

Being There (1979, Hal Ashby)

This is definitely a unique film with a fascinating premise, and Peter Sellers delivers a wonderfully nuanced performance, but it's also pretty much a one trick pony, and does tend to get too repetitive and, frankly, annoying at times - so that takes it down a notch or two, imo.

But the good things are really good. Visually, the movie looks gorgeous, especially in the new 4K transfer from Criterion (just look at those sumptuous interiors!). Melvyn Douglas is great as the dying business mogul Ben Rand, while Shirley MacLaine takes the film to a whole new level of goofiness with her infamous performance.

Some people complain that the film stretches credibility a bit too far, and that, in real life, a mentally challenged simpleton like that would never get away with fooling so many people for such a long time, without even knowing it. Well, of course, but only if you assume this is a film that depicts events firmly grounded in reality, which it is not. That's the whole point. It's a parable, a satirical fairy tale on the foibles of human nature, political establishment, media, etc., and in that sense the movie hasn't lost a bit of its relevance to this day.

As a kid, Luther watches as a carnival geek is goaded into biting the head off a live chicken. Luther has an accident that knocks his teeth out. He gets them replaced with a nice set of sharp metal teeth, but he is haunted. He is scarred for life, and taking on some characteristics of a chicken, he murders people by biting into their necks. He spends many years in prison until he is finally paroled, and he's up to his old tricks. He eventually comes upon a farmhouse where he attacks a mother, her daughter, and her mother's boyfriend. This was much less campy and more disturbing than I expected. I enjoyed it, and I'd recommended to members who enjoy low budget off the wall horror.

I can't think of a thing I didn't like about the movie. It's very emotional and moving.. I especially liked Judy Garland's character, who is also hurting, and tries to alleviate it by helping. The children -- Cassavetes thinks it's the people's problem, "How can we deal with this?" and was sympathetic to Lancaster's opinion that if you treat people like vegetables, they'll adapt to it. Even the parents can't deal with it, but it doesn't mean they don't care. Things happen..

The casting was good, except for Walker, who does not stray far from his one and only comfort zone. I only enjoyed half the scenes, half the ideas. The other half were far-fetched, played out, forced, unoriginal and out of place, while occasionally bordering on the hilarious and ridiculous. Plenty of gratuitous swearing.:dizzy:

The t&a were appreciated.:yup:

I got some serious catching up to do with rating flicks. Here are the flicks I just watched recently.

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/77/Heathersposter89.jpg

I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. I was expecting 80's high school Natural Born Killers, but that was not the case, Winona's character was not a sociopath and was traumatized by the killing. It gave her character depth. Christian Slater was a sociopath and he was actually a lot of fun. Way more fun then Woody in NBK. I liked it.

Cusack plays a neurotic hitman who is having issues with his profession. His next job takes him to his home town just in time for his 10 year high school reunion. Hi-jinx ensue with a hitman union trying to be formed by Dan Akroyd, a hitman after Cusack for a botched hit, and Cusack trying to win back his high school sweetheart. Also Alan Arkin is hilarious as the therapist.

Been on my to watch list forever. Found it on Netflix so why the hell not. Two high school grads travel to a beach with an older woman (who is also the wife to one of their cousins). It is a very well done film that is one part having the boys grow from teenagers to men, exploring the two male leads relationships, sex, and life experience. All the while set in the backdrop of the politics of an upcoming election and showing the very polar differences of richie riche Mexico and the very common poor rural Mexico. All before one of the leads eventually joins the Rebellion and becomes an assassin who will die on the planet Scarif in Rogue One. The movie is pretty explicit and has rampant drug us. This got the film in hot water in Mexico, but ignore that. The film is actually really good and quite touching. I mean emotionally. Though there is plenty of other touching too.

Hey I now know what Hitler was screaming about in all those YouTube parody videos! It shows Hitler's final days towards the end of the war and how the Nazi regime began to crumble. Only disappointment was there was no where near as much showing of the Red Army invading and decimating Berlin for my liking. Still a very good film though. That being said, Sexy Hitler's rant about the MoFo 90's List was still better.

Independence Day: Regurgitated (2016)

They had 20 years to prepare... and this is the best they could come up with.

I didn't have high hopes or expectations for this movie, and I'm not sure even those were met. It starts off OK, but it's all downhill from there. Too many characters, most of whom are bland, too many coincidences, a lack of humour, warmth or even the cheesy charm of the original. It just all fell flat for me.

Get Out (2017) 4

I went into this film without having seen a single trailer for it. I saw some screencaps, and heard it was a horror film directed by Jordan Peele so I decided to give it a shot and boy was I glad I did. Get Out is easily one of the best thrillers I've seen in years. Yes most call it a horror film but it wasn't that particularly scary.Despite it not really being that "scary" this film will make you feel very uncomfortable. It had a few jump scares but it mostly relies on the creep factor and building up the tension as the main character puts clues together towards the beginning of the film. This movie is cleverly done and the overall theme of liberal racism is genius. Plus there were some funny moments throughout this film to relieve some of the tension and slow burn involving the character played by Lil Rel Howery that I loved because it isn't just added in it actually fits into the story being told. The ending is a unpredictable thrill ride with a few fake outs and last minutes reveals that I absolutely loved. The best way to describe this film off the top of my head is it's-

-Invasion of the Body Snatchers meets 12 Years a Slave, which are two films I never thought I'd be mentioning in the same sentence.

After watching the original on Tuesday I watched this again to see if my original disdain for the film was justified.

It was

This is dreadful.

I even tried to watch it as a stand alone film. That was difficult because some of the names and aspects of the story are the same.

Everything that makes the original so good is lacking from this film.

I can find few endearing qualities about it. He looks ok. Some of the CGI is good and Michael Kenneth Williams is a decent addition.

Should never have been made and then when they did, it should have been better.

I fully expected to enjoy this a bit more the second time around. A review in ReverseShot talked about the identity politis and how misogyny being the factor that finally bridges the racial divide. Maybe that would be a refreshingly lens to view the picture with. Unfortunately, those elements seemed to take a back seat to some awfully questionable filmmaking.

Samuel Jackson and Channing Tatum pretty much **** the bed when it comes to immersive performance. Lots of inconsistent accents. Moronic humor in the "black dingus" and "diabolical bitch" parts. An absolutely baffling pace towards the end with monologues stretching every syllable. The expository flashback after the intermission feels rather unnecessary and tedious.

I just did not enjoy very much about this movie when revisiting it. Walton Goggins and Jennifer Jason Leigh still shine in their roles, but that can't salvage the three hour experience as a whole. I remember being so excited that Tarantino was returning to a bottled setting like that of Reservoir Dogs. I think I was expecting it to restrain the indulgent impulses that have made me disengage with some of his work. Boy, was I wrong.

Oh, and fack him for pushing so hard for that 70mm wide release with such a visually underwhelming movie. What a wasted opportunity to resurrect analog media. PTA did it better.

On the Occasion of Remembering the Turning Gate (2002, Sang-soo Hong)

3.5

Throughout its running time, this utterly stripped down, minimalistic film misleads you into a false sense of suspense where you foolishly expect some sort of final eye-opening revelation to make things clear in the end - but none ever comes. The only outbursts of action shaking up the narrative are a couple of highly intense sexual intercourses involving the self-absorbed, unintentionally callous main protagonist, who helplessly moves from one failed affair to another with no sense of purpose. Mundane to the core and very realistic in its cinematic approach, the film depicts painfully relatable situations "as they are", without resorting to forced confrontations or melodrama to spice things up. Sang-soo Hong captures life as a series of boring, trivial events with moments of beauty scattered too few and far between - a pessimistic but fairly down to earth approach, which I'm sure many will find truly insightful.

Logan (2017)

Wow, what a great movie and an equally great performance from Hugh Jackman. Here, he gives his best job as Logan/Wolverine/James Howlett, whoever you feel he is. Although he couldn't have known when he first played Wolverine, it's as if he saved up his best work for his last go-round as Logan. You really get the feeling that he is weary, hurting, fed-up, etc. He's not healing as quickly as he used to, he's graying, showing aging instead of his seemingly eternal young man looks. And he has to take care of a sick Charles Xavier, played again by an excellent Patrick Stewart. Logan has Xavier stashed near the Mexican border, with mutant Caliban (Stephen Merchant) helping to take care of him, giving him meds that will help Xavier control his mental seizures. These seizures cause massive quaking that effects everyone near Charles, both physically and mentally. There is a mention of a tragedy/event in the past that startled me with its implications. Logan has a part-time gig as a limo driver to make money for him and his two compatriots to live on, and buy the needed medicine for Charles. But not all goes as planned, naturally.

Things change when a Mexican woman presents Logan with a young mutant girl, Laura (played to perfection by Dafne Keen). The girl has very similar powers to Wolverine. Hmm. He is asked to take her to the Canadian border, where supposedly there is a safe haven for other mutants waiting. He doesn't want this burden, already being saddled with Xavier and his own pain. But events started by evil government men change all that. Thus begins a cross-country, violent, epic chase, with all the things I've mentioned beforehand coming together for a brilliant, bloody, savage finale. As mentioned by others here, the film Shane is referenced quite a bit, especially and touchingly by Laura near the film's end. At the beginning of the film it is stated that "no new mutants" have been born for several decades, but Laura and her young mutant refugee friends were indeed born, although enhanced with mutant DNA, and some, mainly Laura, augmented with needed man-made weaponry that will be familiar to X-Men fans.

The pacing is perfect, taking its time to play out the characterization of all the main individuals and giving the film a great sense of the pain and loss suffered by our protagonists every time the violence breaks out. I can't imagine a more fitting farewell to Jackman as Wolverine, as he has firmly said this will be his last ride as the famous mutant. And a great swan song it is.

The Blackcoat's Daughter (2017) - directed by Oz Perkins (son of Anthony), two boarding school girls on winter break are stuck at the school awaiting their parents and one is slowly getting possessed. Meanwhile, a young woman dropped off at a bus terminal is trying to get to the school at the same time as these events. Emma Roberts, Kiernan Shipka, and Lucy Boynton give out wonderful performances and the connection between the two stories becomes one that is shocking and completely unexpected...and I say that is a good way!

Okay, so I found this Thai gem called Chai Lai Angels: Dangerous Flowers I still haven't seen, but it's freakin' obvious it's a rip-off of Charlie's Angels. Chai Lai - Charlie - get it?! And it's obvious it's better than the original and I bet it's gonna be a freakin' masterpiece - unlike this utter thrash Charlie's Angels. I bet honeykid only watches it for Drew Barrymore and I can't blame him for this, because she (and Lucy Liu) are hot and like literally the only good things about the movie (and Bill Murray when he appears on the screen). The rest is the worst ever and I mean even if it was meant to be trash cinema, there are so many films meant to be trash and that actually are amazing, or even films that are not meant to be trash, but masterpieces that INDEED ARE MASTERPIECES LIKE THE ROOM. I can see there is a sequel to this called Throttle, but I'm afraid watching it WOULD INDEED THROTTLE ME, so I'm just gonna go straight for the Thai one and hope them Thai angels don't have pee pees on them!

+0.5 to the final rating to make sure honeykid won't kill himself after seeing my rating.

The Loving Story (2011)

A well made documentary about Richard and Mildred Loving an interracial married couple who was arrested for being married in D.C. in 1958. Upon returning to their home state of Virginia, they were arrested and jailed. The crime, interracial marriage. They were then ordered by the court to leave the state of Virginia and not allowed to return together, under penalty of a jail sentence.

This sounds like fiction, but it's true, and it took place from the late 50s all the way up to the late 60s. The film follows the Loving's, and their lawyers, appeal of this landmark case that went all the way to the Supreme Court. That ruling changed the foundation of equality and civil rights laws.

This is a no frills documentary, there's no cheesy reenactments, no fancy CG. We see the actual film footage of the Loving's, both at home with their children and being interviewed by various journalist. The two ACLU lawyers who took on their case are also interviewed as this was a huge national story. At the time this case was resolved, 26 states in America had anti interracial marriage laws.

I highly recommend this as it's a very personal, human story, it's damn important...and it's the basis of the 2016 movie Loving. Which I reviewed here: Loving (https://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?anchor=1&p=1665277#post1665277)

Luis Buńuel snidely tears down the illusions of refinement associated with the materials and rituals of the powerful and opulent. He interjects a conventional narrative with surreal sequences involving violent acts of retribution from beyond the grave. For how dry and critical the picture is, it certainly retains its sense of humor, satirizing the detachment and snobbery of the elite at every turn. The segment involving xenophobia feels rather personal considering Buńuel's heritage and the time he spent in France himself. It's a dense work that I'll need to sit with to further unpack. I have a feeling I'll be revisiting this movie in the future.

Power Rangers (2017)
3

I was a little shocked at this movie. I was expecting a full blown Bay-esque extravaganza, in fact, that's what I wanted. I'm not a fan of Power Rangers, but I enjoy giant overblown blockbusters, so I was looking forward to it. On one hand, it exceeded my expectations, as it truly seemed like they're was a decent amount of care, and effort put into this. The characters, while fairly stock, are enjoyable, and given a lot of screen time outside of the action outside of the suits to well, be characters, not simply just teenagers in colorful suits. Hell, most of the time, that's mostly what it is, and the actors are good enough to make them more interesting than they actually are, especially Banks, I really wished they did more with her, she could've easily been one of the more memorable superhero movie villains since Bane.

This movie also has a great tone. It's never too dark, or "serious," it clearly knows what the material is, but it never goes way over the top either with it's goofiness, it sits comfortably in the middle. I would've maybe liked them to embrace the latter just a bit more frequently, but, that's just personal preference. Regardless, it treats the franchise with a bit of class, it almost never panders, like similar films, such as Revenge of the Fallen, or the newest TMNT movie, a movie I like, but is guilty of a couple of awful fart jokes. Sure, there's a bad joke every now and then, but it never feels like it was put in there purely to get a cheap laugh out of younger viewers. From what I've watched, it does the franchise justice without ever sacrificing what made it appealing to fans.

On the other hand, it disappointed me in what I was expecting, and that's good action. This director does not know how to do action well. The original show at least had performers actually throwing punches, jumping in the air, a whole bunch of cool stuff. When the rangers finally suit up, and deliver the goods in this one, it's that generic shaky cam, barely see it fest that plagues so many of these kind of movies. There's also not a lot of it either, as it takes up only about the last 20 or so minutes of the film. They couldn't even make giant monsters fighting look that cool.

Overall, this isn't a bad movie by any means, just kind of a generic one, but it's generic done well. It succeeds in areas I wasn't expecting, but lacking in the ones I came for. It's a solid effort that I felt had a lot of passion put into it, and I feel the fans are going to really dig it. I wasn't incredibly invested, but if they improve on the weaker aspects, and keep those solid elements intact, and I see a strong future for this potential franchise.

I also saw the new Beauty and the Beast last week. All I really have to say is it does everything the original Dinsey film did, just nowhere near as good, it's shamelessly lazy. Nothing is done terrible, it was just remade with almost no passion, or drive to improve anything. It's not the worst, but it's the most inessential of all these recent Disney remakes. But, it's visually nice, I guess. I'd give it a 2.5+.

Why him > King Kong 2005?
First hour of "King Kong" is great. Then it has some stellar moments centering around Naomi Watts but is generally tedious action for me.

I like comedies and "Why Him" was easy on me. I don't know how good the humor is for repeat viewings, though. Most comedies tend to pale in time.

First hour of "King Kong" is great.
Usually people have it the other way around.

They hate the first hour for being all exposition and character introductions with most of it feeling like an introduction or prologue to the actual movie.

Myself though, I don't mind it. I like it. And I like the rest of the film too. But this is far from the movie it once was to me... Still entertaining though.

All characters are great. Unfortunately they get lost in never ending action of following two hours. I guess people have different tastes as to what sort of action they are into.

But dumb CG action can be fun too... sometimes more than the above... but that's probably only if your companion looks like Kong

Finally got around to watching Snowden (2016) last night. I'm a big enough Stone fan to where I enjoyed it. Thought the tone would be a tad darker; I don't think anything he's done has been as dark as Nixon (1995) was. Thought Rhys Ifans was easily the best part of the movie.

Tickled

(David Farrier & Dylan Reeve)

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/9/9a/Tickled.png/220px-Tickled.png

3

When I first heard about this film, my eyebrows raised from confusion and interest. Then when I saw it available on demand, I made sure to sit my wife down to watch it with me. Her look of complete confusion and the questions she asked during and after gave me a chuckle. This is one weird film.

For those who do not know what it is about, a New Zealand journalist stumbles upon a video online about 'Competitive Endurance Tickling'. Those three words were enough to pique his interest and watch. After finding it somewhat humorous, he knew he had to dive deeper into this odd phenomenon. Big mistake. After finding the company that puts these competitions on, he requested interviews and information and was greeted with homophobic hostility (he's gay) and threats of legal action. Not wanting to be bullied away, he goes head first into the investigation and discovers a world of deceit, fraud and identity theft.

Wow, yes, this film takes some weird turns and leaves you scratching your head over the absurdity of it all. I'll try not to go into too much detail because half the fun in watching this is seeing how depraved the rabbit hole goes, but this film needs some sort of explaining. I'll pose this question to you; if you were looking for some quick cash and a company offered you $2,000, hotel and a flight to the shooting location, would you partake in this tickle competition? How it works is, you are strapped down on a mat. Hands and feet are both tied and another man (they are all men) sits on top of you and....tickles you. Then more men come over and they...tickle you as well. One individual had four men tickling him at once; one for each foot, one for his torso and another under his arms. He laughs and squirms, but he can't go anywhere. This is all filmed as well. Nothing too sexual about it.

Then the video randomly appears online.

When you ask for the company to take it down, that's when things get weird...er. This company then send the video to all your friends, family, co-workers with hateful messages about how perverted you are and how dangerous you are to children, etc. They try to destroy your life and have succeeded in a few cases. It's somewhat tragic.

Farrier interviews a tickle fetishist and he explains how it's no different from a foot fetish. Sure, people have their weird sexual fantasies and what not, but the individual(s) behind these attacks seems to be on another plane of existence. How far will this company go to humiliate people? Will they steal identities? Threaten fake legal action? Threaten lives? The answer to all of these questions is of course, yes.

Tickled is one of the weirdest documentaries I've ever seen and it's the subject matter that saves an otherwise mediocre film. Check it out for the sheer absurdity of it.

I watched this due to your post, and enjoyed it immensely. It is completely bizarre. The ending was a bit abrupt but it shows they didn't have anything else to so on I guess. I'd love to see a follow up documentary on Jane O'Brien in a year or 2. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

This is a found footage/documentary style horror that's a cross between Chronicle and a vampire movie. A couple of friends in their 20's head out for a multi-continental trip of a lifetime. One of the guys had recently been diagnosed with some sort of brain aneurysm and his family is worried that if he's away and something happens, he may not be able to get the medical help he needs. The other guy is a sort of amateur filmmaker and is going to document the trip. In Paris, something happens to the guy with the health concern and he begins to change. He gets very sick but he also develops powers. It's not an especially intelligent or original movie, but if you like the premise, I would definitely recommend it. I thought there were some genuinely exciting and creepy moments, and I was thoroughly entertained.

What? What???

I guess I should expect this one to be different, since it's the third entry after all not to mention it was marketed as a parody of the first two movies. But it really was strange. Very, very strange.

The thing is... The things that work about this movie work against it at the same time.
First off, the comedy. There were pretty funny lines throughout, most of which stem from characters just acting unusually casual about very extreme situations. You gotta love Alex seeing his biology teacher dead and not even bat an eye. More than just not bat an eye, he's almost completely fine with it. Mary Lou however is the real cartoon character, who does all kinds of fun little hijinks she can think of in the most gleeful manner. Courtney Taylor replaces Lisa Shrage as the character. Whereas Shrage was fairly believable, Taylor hams it up to the highest degree. But that is kind of the point with every actor in this movie. They are utterly terrible, but the cartoony nature of the acting is part of the humor. You can argue whether this is such a good thing or not, but most of them do have their moments.
The music soundtrack was pretty funny as well. Like picked right out of a kids show.

That being said, it wasn't a particularly clever movie. Sure, it has some very funny or amusing moments (like the depiction of Hell, the dumb line about mental illness, the silly comments about how women are tedious), but it has quite a bafflingly dumb storyline and a sense of staying over its welcome. I can't take anything going on in the movie seriously. At all. I know you're not really supposed to, but any sort of tension, which is comedic but you are meant to be invested in, becomes redundant. I should feel worried about Alex? Or Sarah? Or his family? Every character is an annoying ass'hole, including Mary Lou herself. They may give you smiles due to their funny lines, but you do not IN THE SLIGHTEST care about whether they die or live. And that's a problem. It also results in the movie being really boring, since you don't care for the story. It takes FOR-EVER before Alex decides he's had enough. FOR. EVER. I know he's supposed to be the dumbest prick ever, but how he also switched from being cool with it even after protesting to then immediately deciding "That's it!" was so poorly handled.

A mixed bag. It was an admirable effort at doing something different. And it honestly could have been a lot worse (thank God I chuckled enough that it in parts made up for the poor writing), but to someone who loves the first two movies it's pretty disrespectful in a way.

5.8/10, = low 3.

Beauty & The Beast

(Bill Condon)

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/d6/Beauty_and_the_Beast_2017_poster.jpg

2

It was about halfway through the movie, when I was nodding off, that I realized how utterly dull and uninspired this remake is. There are moments where I was engaged and moments where I questioned what the hell the filmmakers were thinking. The classic tale of Stockholm Syndrome has Belle, played by Emma Watson, falling in love with a Beast, played by Dan Stevens in motion capture. It's a tale as old as time. In short, stick to the original cartoon.

If you're still reading, I guess you want more answers for how this film could have limped across the finish line to the end credits. Well, let's start with the set pieces. Attention to detail is marvellous, the castle is gorgeous to look at and completely confusing to understand where you are. Numerous times I was trying to understand the geography of the place and failed. Her prison has a giant window she can jump from to escape, the stairs and hallways are like a hedge maze from The Shining. Moments in the cartoon that inspire awe and smiles are when she enters the library and the ballroom. Yet here, they glaze over such things. I never got a great sense of the rooms, it could be attributed to the atrocious 3D, but it disappointed me. Then we have her village, which felt like it was manufactured the day before they started filming. Nothing in the beginning felt real, everything was staged and choreographed. Yes, we get that it's a musical, but make it a bit more believable, yeah?

Ignoring these aspects of the film, let's try and focus on the effects, mainly the CGI. Yes, the CGI, which is pretty much 75% of the film. It worked wonderfully in the 'Be Our Guest' number, when it brought in vibrant colours and imagination. The rest, not so much. The characters such as Cogsworth, Mrs Potts and Lumičre, among other inanimate objects, felt lifeless. Zero characterization for their designs, thankfully they were saved by good voice acting. Ewan McGregor does a great job bringing the candlestick to life. He's one of the highlights this film has. I do wish Sir Ian McKellen did a bit more here, he felt underused or uninterested.

Is there something I'm missing? Oh of course, the Beast himself. Big mistake in turning the character into a fuzzy CGI creation. The movements of the face, did not feel true to make me believe he was a character on the screen. It felt fake, worse than those people complaining about the silicon valley styled Rogue One characters. They should have gone a more practical route. I don't get it either. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes gave beautifully created designs to furry creatures, what the hell happened here? They wanted to make him more human? I felt like Emma Watson was alone in their scenes together. They should be falling love dammit!!!

Was the casting good though? As I mentioned earlier, McGregor does a great job, but the real standout is Luke Evans. Despite not being the ideal looking actor to take on the role of the ego centric Gaston, he steals the show. A wonderful singing voice (others do not) and an actor who is really having a good time with the character and material. Every time he was on screen was a joy to watch. Emma Watson on the other hand, delivers a bland and generic performance for Belle. Which is surprising, considering she loves the character and original film. Nothing she does here is interesting, nor memorable. This character could have been played by literally anyone, they could have swapped out actors halfway through the film and no one would notice. Stanley Tucci is underused as is Kevin Kline (despite having more to do than the original character).

Am I being too hard on the film? Maybe, but the entire thing felt unneeded and by the freakin' numbers. Bill Condon, of Twilight fame, was the wrong man for the job. The film has no visual flare when it should be bursting out of the screen. Everything was forced, staged and relied heavily on CGI, which in turn made the film feel fake. At most, the film is "okay" and if not for Luke Evans, the film would have been considerably worse. They do add a few more scenes to flesh our some characters and try to make their love story a bit more believable. More backstory and story elements as to why no one knows where this castle is despite being hours away. These elements helped a bit, but this film lacks a lot of that thing Disney specializes in...MAGIC.

This movie suits my taste perfectly so it was one I was really looking forward to. There are two storylines, one reality, and one coming from a book that a man dedicates to his ex-wife. I thought the movie deftly alternated these storylines, as well as the present and the past. It's easy to follow if you pay attention. Amy Adams, Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Shannon, and the supporting cast all put in strong performances. There is some great tension, especially in the first half, and it is exceptional visually. I loved the way the reality part of the story wrapped up, but I would have liked a little more from the conclusion of the fiction part.

A vile, revolting, and carnivalesque freakshow. Reminds me of Jodorowsky's Santa Sangre, albeit this film is much more nihilistic - and disturbing. I'm still not sure what to make of it, but I can't deny that Greenaway is a master of design; few films look as good as this one.

Knight of Cups 3.5

Unfairly maligned, Knight of Cups would rank somewhere near the bottom if I were ranking Terry's filmography, but this is still a fascinating, spellbinding piece of cinema. It's a little long--and certain segments are tedious--but I found this a hypnotic experience. Say what you want about ol' Terry, but he's one of the few filmmakers who sticks to his vision, regardless of what critics or audiences think about him.

For me, few modern films capture such a sense of architecture and space. Small human bodies juxtaposed against steel skyscrapers.

Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation. One of the best action flicks of the decade, this excellent flick, probably the best of the series, was just as enjoyable on second viewing as it was at the cinema.

When it's good, the fascinating true to life story sustains it. When it's bad, it's the best kind of campy, exaggerated bad. I mean there are scenes where you forget if they're portraying Steve Jobs or hippie Patrick Bateman. It's like something Saturday Night Live would come up with... except hilarious.

The Baby of Macon 3

A vile, revolting, and carnivalesque freakshow. Reminds me of Jodorowsky's Santa Sangre, albeit this film is much more nihilistic - and disturbing. I'm still not sure what to make of it, but I can't deny that Greenaway is a master of design; few films look as good as this one.

Saw Beauty and the Beast at the cinema today. I was a bit on the skeptical side, as it's not really my usual cup of tea and in all honesty I probably wouldn't have bothered but for the fact I like Emma Watson, but I actually generally really enjoyed it. One or two of the songs had me rolling my eyes and went on a bit too long but for the most part it was really, really fun, bouyed by the lovely lead actress (certainly the best thing she's done since Perks, hopefully The Circle will be great too). Had a really good time with this. :) :highfive: 4

I saw this about 20 years ago when my wife and I watched a bunch of classics, and I hardly remembered any of it. She remembered more than I did, something that got me the evil eye since I had told her she'd never seen it. One of the great things for me while focusing on 40's movies has been rediscovering Humphrey Bogart in his prime. Another great thing has been the discovery Edward G. Robinson. Here they go head to head with Bogie being a Major just out of the military, and Robinson being a gangster. The setting is a Florida hotel right on the water and in the midst of a hurricane. The supporting cast featuring Lauren Bacall and Lionel Barrymore is also a big plus. This is an awesome classic crime thriller with some of cinema's greatest legends. It is a must see.

Cool idea but Stuart Gordon's "Dolls" did it much better.

This movie is slow and the casting was bad. Acting poor. Tedious to sit through. Good doll fx but not enough to warrant a good b picture. Surprised this is the one that gets all of the attention. For a much better film, see Dolls from 1987.

EDIT: I'll try it again later, it did have some good moments. Maybe the mood wasn't right. For now I'm sticking with 2 boxes.

THE WATCH (2012)

I'm sorry but I really like this movie. It's ridiculous and vulgar and I like it. I like the ensemble and a lot of the improvised lines. Vince Vaughn, I'm a big fan of his. He's a complete doofus on purpose and I like to see energy being projected outward the way he does it. I don't care that Costco's is one of the major plot points. I really don't. Big deal. How about mentioning Glen Matlock as being the better bassist in the Sex Pistols. It's not hip to sell out or be the crowd pleasing movie for everyone, and that involves having integrity. The Watch has none of that. It's a complete corporate money grabber. It at least broke even I think. Again, who cares. It's funny. I turn it on and watch it to lift my sprits. Last night my spirits were lifted. "The man is a f*ckin* C*NT!" (referring to an alien creature)

I surprisingly liked "Frances Ha" quite a lot, sure the characters are self righteous and pretentious at times, but the film is aware of that and pokes fun of it during certain scenes, the humour is another thing I surprisingly enjoyed, I found myself cracking up at most of the happening events, the dialogue is well put together, the pacing is great and the acting is great. Of course the film has flaws, but they aren't in the way of the joy that the movie was able to spark.

A very simple, very understated and very deeply moving story about an upbeat Senegalese cab driver named Solo (beautifully played by Souleymane Sy Savane) who develops an unlikely friendship with a disillusioned old passenger (Red West) after he learns the man is planning on committing suicide and decides to stop him.
