I normally don't like fantastical themes in movies, but this movie plays it so straight that it didn't bother me. I will probably watch it again because I really want to love it. I very much appreciate it's originality and uniqueness, and it has a lot of brilliant WTF moments. The problem for me was that it often felt lifeless and dull. That was part of the plan I'm sure, but it wore on me as the movie went on.

FATAL ATTRACTION
(1987)
Classic tale of a married man who has an affair on his wife with a sociopath, who gives him and his family hell.
Glenn Close as the sociopath is terrific. She deserved the Oscar for her performance here that year instead of the overrated (acting-wise) Cher for the forgettable Moonstruck.

BASIC INSTINCT
(1992)
I was surprised to see that the movie was met with mixed reviews at the time of its release, with its current Rotten Tomatoes rating at a depressing 54%. Well, that makes it an underrated film. It's, in fact, a very captivating erotic thriller about a detective who gets lured into a web of sex and murder by a cool, sexy, but very dangerous author who might or might not have killed her former lover with an ice pick.
Sharon Stone became an overnight sensation after the release of this movie. Her performance as the femme fatale is superb, and this movie set a new standard for the entire genre.

3.5, enjoyed it for the most part, Peter Stormare and Andy Powers were awesome, but the lead girl was flat and the overall plot wasn't breaking any new ground, really. Still a fun time if you're in the mood for a good horror flick.

Charming cinematic creation. Half the humor seems to be of a Jewish and self-deprecating variety, at least that's how I picked up on it. The nurse is a babe. The werewolf transformation scenes are awesome. With all the Disney memorabilia, makes me wonder whether this was a closet Disney production or a European jab in Walt's direction. Make-up and gore were all very nicely done.

A 16 year old girl meets an older man online and starts an affair with him, while she falls head over heels for him she quickly learns that he doesnt have the same intentions. Her feelings starts crossing over to an unhealthy obsession involving both eating disorders and self harm.
The movie is based on the autobiography of Cielo Latini by the same name.
The main character makes a lot of stupid decision, like most teen girls do,shes rude and at most time unlikeable however the actress makes sure you still have some understanding of what shes going through and why shes acting like she is. all in all a so-so movie with a great cast and even better lead actress.

Sound score and soundtracks are amazing and the direction is brilliant. The ending is cool and maybe a sequel? If Stephen Lang return I'm all in for it.

Its an ordinary day, pouring with rain,8 year old so-won (Hope) convinces her pregnant mother to let her walk alone to school. On her way shes stopped by an old drunk man.At work her father gets a phonecall to come to the hospital as fast as possible; his daughter has been beaten up and brutally raped by the old man.
The movie follows So-Won,her mum and dad from the morning it happened and every day after, showing the impact such a tragedy has on the whole family.
This is probably the very first "serious" asian movie ive ever seen that tackles such a dark issue, that keeps it all completely down to earth and realistic.
The cast is amazing, especially the father and daughter, incredibly heartbreaking movie.

(2016)
An effective, very well-made, and straight-to-the-point drama about US Airways Flight 1549 that made a miracle landing on the Hudson River, dubbed Miracle on the Hudson by the media, after encountering a flock of birds and losing both engines upon takeoff in 2009. The movie is directed by Clint Eastwood and stars the always incredible Tom Hanks as Captain Chesley Sullenberger (a.k.a. Captain Sully).

Alicia Vikander is brilliant in this movie about a young girl who just cant seem to catch a break. Her mother is an alcoholic, both herself and her boyfriend seem to hang out with the wrong crowd-or they themselfs are the wrong crowd- she doesnt have a job and has had to resort to some shady acts to make money. She doesnt seem to be going anywhere until one day when her love of classical music makes her break into the concert hall in town and she is mistaken for a job applicant.Shes hired as the new reseptionist but this means she will have to keep up appearance.
Cant speak highly enough of Alicia in this, but theres a few things that keep it from getting all 5 stars
at the end she gets her old job back, which its weird to be me considering security had to throw her out when she got fire and theres also her creepy appearance during the concert.Had it been the maestro who fired her and who met her at the hall that night it would have been more understandable because they might not have known about it,or even if they did, they themselfs were happy about her and the work she did. Also she would have been the number one suspect with the wife suspecting an affair, him being the only one not wanting her for the job-and him actually firing her,her being there at the night of his death acting frantic.

An extremely well done first half, that falls apart after the mid-twist happens that makes absolutely no sense. Really wish that never happened and instead they just came up with another interesting angle. Mel delivers a great performance in this though, Russo and Sinise are also very good.

A darkly comedic dive into the mind of an eccentric obsessed with living among and protecting bears. Werner Herzog pulls no punches in critiquing Timothy Treadwell's mission and speculating on his psyche, sifting through hundreds of hours of footage to make sense of him as a person. The mass of videotape yields some rare, beautiful moments in the wilderness, but also serves as a creative medium and a confessional outlet for Timothy. At times, it almost feels like a an absurdist mockumentary led by Andy Dick complete with vague questions about sexuality.
The conclusions Herzog offers throughout the film feel almost revelatory, specifically about Timothy's sentimental belief in a standard of harmony in nature while ignoring the innate chaos of the universe. Herzog is one of the few who could manage to handle this material in a way that it's touching, humorous, powerful, and even keeled all at the same time. Perhaps it's because he could easily be the subject of a documentary like this one. In a way, Timothy was a man after his own heart.

One of the best edited trailers of the year is also one of the worst edited films of the year. Suicide Squad is a mess. I didn't want to believe what the critics were saying, I wanted this film to be good. I'm sorry fans, but the critics were right with this one.
After Superman has opened our eyes to a world with superheros and meta-humans, Amanda Waller decides to put together a task force full of 'bad people'. Should anything go wrong, they have will have complete deniability. This squad consists of some colourful characters and when one of their own goes rogue, they need to put their differences aside to save the world.
As I sat in the theatre, laughing at unintentionally funny parts, rolling my eyes at things that were ridiculous and genuinely being upset at how poorly this film was thrown together, I couldn't help but wonder what this film originally looked liked. After the tepid reaction to BvS, the studio scrambled to make this film a bit lighter in tone, the result is a horrible mess of a film that doesn't know what it wants to be. Flashback sequences haphazardly thrown in, character backstories dropped, cheesy jokes added, there are so many areas of this film that are out of sync that it hurts. Blatant continuity issues too just further cements the fact that this film was cut, re-cut, cut again and then reassembled from scratch.
The squad has Will Smith as Deadshot. A role I originally was cautious about, but he is one of the best aspects of this film. Along with Margot Robbie as Harley-Quinn, these two are standouts. That's the obvious part, even to a fault. The film dedicates so much time to these two that the rest of the squad is left behind. El Diablo has one of the more interesting backstories, but we only get a mere glimpse at it. He later has a line about the squad being his "new" family...what? He's known these people for less than 24 hours. None of the actions of these people ring true towards the climax, it's a joke.
Katana and Captain Boomerang are severely underused. Killer Croc becomes a stereotype, Rick Flagg has a forced relationship with another character to try and jam in some sort of emotional response, but it comes up short. Who's left on the squad? Oh yeah, Slipknot, the random guy only added to prove the bomb devices are real. Give the guy some backstory, he just randomly shows up. It's awkward.
A fun as it was to have Harley-Quinn in the film, she does not belong in the Squad with people who have fire like powers, or are have crocodile. She's crazy and has a bat, that's it. That's just a nitpick from me. Finally we have Leto's Joker. A lot must have been left on the cutting room floor for him. The man should have been the villain of the piece, it would have been more grounded. Instead we get some supernatural powered villain. It doesn't gel with the film. It gives more nameless henchmen for them to kill, but zero stakes.
Suicide Squad is a miss. Maybe a more comprehensive edit exists for DVD, maybe I'll give that a look, but damn is this a miss for me.

Don't Breathe ; B+
A great little chiller, crafted well in both sound editing and visuals. An interesting twist on the home invasion sub genre where the person in danger being either blind, deaf etc in the likes of 'Hush' and 'Wait Until Dark' is in fact the antagonist, Stephen Lang's 'blind man' excells at being an intimadating presence.

Well well well, who would've thunk it? Turns out, that if you disable DiCaprio's voice in a film, criple him so he can't show off his more feminine running style, limit his lines, hide that baby face, place him in a rugged, manly, and carnivorous setting (for a change), throw in a bit of tongue action with a Pawnee (dude), and what do you know, he wins his first, well deserved Oscar. Bravo!
Hardy was good in all his scenes.

Difficult one to rate. I really loved some things about it but i was a bit up and down at times, and i admit i had no idea where it was going at certain points. Such a weird film. Honestly got no clue how i feel about it visually. Some of the hallucinations were extremely well done, while the more normal scenes were a bit more annoying. It was unique, that's about as much as i can say about it. Was so nuts when peoples faces would keep switching into different people.
I liked the interactions between the characters most. Robert Downey Jr was probably my favourite, to my surprise though i also liked Keanu. I think he was unnatural as always in certain scenes but it kinda worked for this which may not have been intentional. Mostly because of how weird his character and the various situations he ended up in were.
It was funny at times too. The scene were they start panicking and planning to sell their house because they thought someone broke in when it was just Donna was great :D. As well as the dialogue and interactions, that's what i think was done best the portrayal of paranoia. Also loved the ending it was just so cruel what Keanus character was subjected to.
Interesting film that i'd like to revisit at a later time.

A Scanner Darkly (2006) - 3.5 +
Camo I read your review and it peaked my interest, so I gave it a shot, it had already been on my watchlist. Really intriguing film, I was surprised how much I liked the acting for Keanu, he was perfect for the role. His relationship with Winona seemed a little under-developed, especially with how the ending goes down. I thought the interactions between the main crew was intriguing as well and the comedy was okay at times too. This films problem is I don't think I needed it to be animated and I feel like it delves into pockets that are strange and aren't necessarily needed. Probably will need another viewing to really find a concrete rating.

Suppose it was but i wasn't that bothered by it because the relationship wasn't of that much interest to me until the ending. I think it will be something that will bother me more on a rewatch.
This films problem is I don't think I needed it to be animated
That as definitely true, it didn't need to be animated. Richard Linklater seems to be a very experimental filmmaker though so i can see why he wanted to try this (i know he did it with Waking Life too but i haven't seen that yet), especially with the hallucinations and just general weirdness of the story giving a chance for some potentiallly interesting visuals. It just comes down to whether you personally liked it or not. As i said it was mixed for me, i loved some of the weirder scenes but i found it a bit intrusive in the normal ones.
Probably will need another viewing to really find a concrete rating.
Same. I think it had some problems but it was very interesting and i've been thinking about it more since it finished. Glad you tried it. Think i'm going to try his other animated film Waking Life soon.

Don't Breathe

Much like the Netflix film Hush, Don't Breathe hooks viewers in with an interesting concept dealing with sense deprivation. 3 teenagers break into an old man's home to steal what they think he has, hundreds of thousands of dollars. They think it will be an easy score because the man is also blind, but what they don't know is that he has some skeletons in his closet.
From Fede Alvarez, who directed the Evil Dead remake, Don't Breathe is a thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat with anticipation. Unique elements keep the film afloat and will have you changing from scene to scene who you are rooting for. Alvarez, right from the start, shows us how these kids are unlikable. Breaking into a home, stealing the right amount of things so it's not grand larceny, pissing all over the floor for the hell of it. These three are not really likable. Then we see a softer side of, well, at least two of them. Rocky is living at a trailer home with her drunk and irresponsible mother. She is the only one looking after her little sister. Alex is in love with her and will do whatever he can to make sure she gets out of that hell hole. The third guy is Money...yes, that is his name. He has next to no redeeming qualities about him.
Stephen Land, from Avatar, plays the Blind Man. He has the right amount of menace for someone lacking sight. He's set up his home to be beneficial to him, leaving the kids at the disadvantage. Numerous times I did not know where the film was going to go and that added to the enjoyment of it. One particular out of nowhere sequence comes about halfway through. I won't spoil what it is, just know that it is random, weird and out of left field. It spoiled the film for my friend, but added to the absurdity of the premise to me.
Competent direction and good acting help keep the viewers attention. A good concept can only go so far, you need good execution, which this film has. Recommended to those who are looking for a good thriller with very little, if any gore. The film is more concerned with tension than blood. Which is a nice surprise these days.

The Ones Below (2015) rating_2
http://i.imgur.com/oiMsz8O.jpg
Rosemary's Baby (1968) isn't my favorite Polanski. Hell, it's not even my favorite of the so-called Apartment Trilogy. Maybe that's why I found myself so open to David Farr re-imagining the story nearly half a century later. Do I feel like I placed my trust in the wrong hands? Not particularly.
Justin and Kate are the romanticized university sweethearts. He's a promising campaign manager who can afford a new flat for his expecting a wife, herself maintaining a career in fashion at some compacity. Our understanding of their relationship deepens with Kate venting about her withholding mother, Justin expressing concern over her mental health especially considering her family history, the revelation that conceiving a child was a topic they debated long before the act. For an 80 minute picture, we really get a three dimensional picture of their dynamic without ever feeling like a clump of backstory is being stuffed down our throats.
An offer of herbal tea is as close as the neighbors come to the eccentric Mr. and Mrs. Casevete. Instead of occult conspiracy, their veneer conceals the tacit agreement that they love each other as a means to bear a child as opposed to any more intimate connection. For Jon, it's an extension of business that already pushed him to leave a previous spouse found to be infertile. For Theresa, it's a high pressure responsibility, especially in Jon's presence. Even after piecing together what we can, the brunt of their identity is still hidden away from the viewer. We never get to see how they interact when they're alone. It's a very effective decision that the film thankfully never doubles back on.
Though explicitly inspired by a younger Polanski, The Ones Below also reminds me of his 2011 effort, Carnage which followed two groups of parents stuck together in an apartment for an uncomfortable afternoon. The couples really grate against each other even before a tragic event sets them at odds. Theresa and Jon's dinnertime charade is a cringe inducing affair. The courtesy Justin extends to Jon is met with icy reception. When everything boils over, they're at each other's throats abandoning any guise of civility. Theresa demands they both see the child she blames them for losing, its premature corpse too meager to leave behind ashes. The rest of the film is unnerving in a different way, though rooted in this devastating exchange that occurs early on.
The Ones Below is an exercise in tension, riding that familiar line between paranoia and conspiracy. It's a more grounded experience, resolving itself in the vein of a procedural as opposed to a fever dream. It never travels too far outside the realm of possibility to torture its audience, relying on awkward conversations and a frenzied depiction of anxiety. For everything it does right, it still feels like a very minor story perhaps too constrained by its runtime and likely its budget. Perhaps the most disappointing shortcoming lies in it spoiling any interpretation by cheaply explaining the ending in the most blunt manner possible. For a film that thrives on withholding certainty from the audience, it really shoots itself in the foot for some misguided sense of resolution.

Don't Breathe
(Fede Alvarez)
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/4/41/Don%27t_Breathe_%282016_film%29.png/220px-Don%27t_Breathe_%282016_film%29.png
3
Just came home from seeing this in the cinema, which marks the first time I ever watched a horror movie on the silver screen. I thought Lang stole the show, he was a great mix of strength, silence and fury. I also liked the section in the basement where the kids are trying to get out...and then Lang kills the light. For a few seconds the screen's black, we only hear fast breathing, then the screen shifts into a greyish spectrum, we understand it's still black as pitch for the characters, but we, the audience, can see them. This greyish light had a poor draw width, almost like fog, so a very short distance away the visibility droped to near nothing. It reminded me of Silent Hill 2, how they used the fog to obscure the fact that the surroundings didn't load properly untill you were way to close. Anything that brings up recemblance to that game's allright in my book. Would rate it at 3.5

The director, Ben Wheatley, is one whose movies I've enjoyed. Down Terrace was a nice independent crime film, Sightseers an excellent black comedy, and Kill List is a mind blower that's one of my favorite movies of the last 10 years. It seems that with all the promise he's shown, he was given a larger budget and a name cast. High Rise stars a very good Tom Hiddleston and Luke Evans, a smoking hot Sienna Miller, and a mailing it in Jeremy Irons. The movie has a few scenes that look and feel extremely cool, but they would have been a lot greater had the movie been better overall. It's at it's best when there doesn't seem to be much going on except stimulating the viewer visually and with excellent use of music. As the movie gets more chaotic, it also gets less interesting. I definitely think that Wheatley continued to show great promise as a filmmaker, but unfortunately his next film (Free Fire) looks like a dud.

It's got a good IMDb rating and some good reviews, and about 70% on Rotten Tomatoes, and 73/100 on metacritic so far after 6 reviews, will probably get lower with more but seems about his normal level with critics.

I think his new movie coming out has a broader appeal. It's an action movie with a comedic side. I watched the trailer, and while mainstream audiences might like it, I thought it looked lame.

Fair enough. Just watched the trailer, I'm divided, the look of it and cast seems cool, and often with these things they put some of the more obvious/silly humour in trailer (masturbation joke), so hopefully it works better in the actual film. I've only seen A Field in England and Kill List from him so far anyway, both which I thought were okay to good.

To Camo & Cole: DEFINITELY give Scanner Darkly rewatch. The first time is a bit bumpy to watch trying to figure out what's what but after a rewatch it, for me, becomes a fun lil drug film to enjoy watching
For me:
https://youtu.be/SjbPi00k_ME
(COUNTLESS REWATCHES) Casablanca (1942) 5+++ Favorite scene? See above
https://i.ytimg.com/vi/ncJbUTCGjws/hqdefault.jpg
(SEVERAL REWATCHES) Oscar Wilde (1960) 4 Morley is wonderful in this with a great supporting cast.

Forsaken 3.5+++ While it does come off as a "cut and paste" old time TV western it is a very good watch with several favorite actors including the father/son Sutherlands, Brian Cox (HUGE fan of his) and Micheal Wincott.
Admittedly, no one plays out of their range, but again, a good watch, if not an all too familiar watch.

I know there's some fans of this here so sorry, but yeah i didn't like it much at all. I can understand why others like this but i just found it dull mostly and i hated the camera work. Seemed like all the visual problems i had with A Scanner Darkly amplified which i doubt was the case for Linklater, i think this was what he was aiming for exactly but it was extremely annoying to me. The constantly moving backgrounds and ugh, sorry it was horrible visually IMO. Was genuinely difficult to look at at times, so ugly and un-expressive.
The content could've improved my opinion of it but i wasn't convinced there either. I don't think the characters ever left the Philosophy 101 class at the start, that must be the twist because otherwise this was so dull when it really shouldn't have been. I know Linklater studied Philosophy and it is one of the main influences in his work. He is one of my favourite directors but i don't think this was a good idea personally, unless it was mainly to test out Rotoscope so he could use and improve on it for A Scanner Darkly later which was a lot better IMO.
I watched this hours ago, before i watched the Celtic game and decided to wait to post about it because i thought it may grow on me when i thought about it more but it really didn't. Not a fan, my least favourite Linklater so far.

Yeah really, I found it to be pretty sad, one of the problems in my opinion is the way people acted when these people were murdering others. If they had stronger actors who just started breaking down, I think my rating would be much higher.

The Finest Hours
(Craig Gillespie)
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/c/c9/The_Finest_Hours_poster.jpg/220px-The_Finest_Hours_poster.jpg
2
A story about the bravery of men and the struggle for survival, The Finest Hours is a ho-hum traditional rescue drama that is hurt by lack of vision from the director. In 1952 a pair of oil tankers split in half and while everyone is concerned about the one, a small time coast guard takes a crew of 4 on a small boat to rescue the other.
A true story told with laziness and modest budget. Had the film had strong talent behind it,maybe everything about it wouldn't look and feel cheesy. From badly obvious water CGI to questionable acting choices, The Finest Hours lacks the emotional punch that most rescue dramas would have. It asks too much with giving too little.
Chris Pine plays a coast guard who comes off as a little slow. At least that's how I received Chris Pine's performance. There was something off about it, everything he does feels like he's second guessing himself, even basic interactions with friends. Maybe it was Pine's attempt to put on an accent, but his constant tiptoeing around the dialogue makes the character feel dumb to me. His crew, one of which is played by Ben Foster, have zero character development. They literally could have been cardboard cutouts of people and nothing would have changed. One guy controls a light, the other sits in a hole in the boat. I'm surprised to see Foster in this role to be honest, he always seems to tackle interesting characters and deliver unorthodox performance that, at the very least, make it memorable. Here, he is given and delivers nothing.
Affleck is on the tanker that is sinking. He's the smart guy who knows everything about the ship, so much that despite the constant bickering between the crew on what to do, he manages to save their lives. This is another performance that feels dialed back. Restrained, if you will. That's the one word to perfectly describe everything about this film. The acting, the story, the budget, the action sequences...all restrained.
To make matters worse, the on land drama is stagnant. The relationship and chemistry between Pine and Holliday Grainger who plays his fiancee is stale. The Finest Hours is old-fashioned filmmaking, to a fault. It takes no chances, isn't strong enough or have enough heart to tug on any emotional strings it tries to play. I can only imagine what the film could have been like with someone with more vision behind the camera. Everything about this film wants to be better, unfortunately it's not.

Star Trek Beyond
(Justin Lin)
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/b/ba/Star_Trek_Beyond_poster.jpg/220px-Star_Trek_Beyond_poster.jpg
3
The least ambitious Star Trek is probably the closest to the original series. Is that a good thing though? Kirk is at a crossroads in his life, he thinks he should no longer be captain of the Enterprise due to the redundancy of the missions. Nothing exciting happens anymore. QUE EXCITING INCIDENT.
To say a lot of this film is written generically is an understatement. The destruction of the Enterprise isn't shocking due to Into Darkness which saw it almost destroyed there. 85% of the film takes place on one planet, which reduces the scope of the story. The ambition isn't there, they leave that at the door while trying to focus on a more humanistic tale. I think the film suffers a bit from that. It feels like an 'episode' not a 'film'.
The set-up for Kirk to question his leadership is eye-rolling and used as a generic character arc moment when he comes to realize he needs to be captain. The same 'arc' is used for Spock, who also wants to leave the Enterprise and continue the efforts of future Spock (Nimoy). Things wrap up neatly for the characters as any episodic show would. I give credit to them for handling Nimoy's death poetically.
Karl Urban is given a bit more to do with the character of Bones. This is a much needed improvement as he is without a doubt, a highlight in the series. Saldana and Yelchin have less to work with this time. She is ultimately the damsel in distress here where Yelchin does absolutely nothing.
There were some pretty bad parts that are used for the sake of looking cool. The Beastie Boys' Sabotage sequence comes to mind, same with the motorcycle bits with Pine. The logical aspects of the sequences are thrown out the window. Finally we have the villain, whose identity is suppose to come as a shock I guess? It's pretty obvious from the get go who he is and what his purpose is. The film tries so hard to make it a moment of realization when it's simply the audience waiting for the film to catch up.
Not a bad entry, just a forgettable one. I think the series might be done for now that Abrams has departed and Yelchin is no longer with us. I'd be okay with that, despite it meaning the series goes out with a whimper.
....at least it's not a fan service story line...*Into Darkness*.

Quick reminder, it is a Disney movie. Of course it was restrained, when you consider how polite and cuss-free the dialogue was among sailors. I also saw no cigarettes/pipes, no booze, no nude wall decorations in sailor's quarters, etc. Restraint was expected from the start.

Quite an all right movie. I sometimes rate movies by how many memorable scenes they contain. This one had a couple of great ones, but probably the best one is the bar scene where Woody is being ridiculed for his "winning" ticket. A subtle, almost completely silent scene that shows so much. All I can say is kudos to the writers and the actors.

Quite liked this just didn't think it was one of Linklaters best personally. It felt like a mix of several other Linklater films. Was basically just a group of 20 somethings hanging around discussing varous things from random topics to their lives. Didn't find it as entertaining or interesing as some of his other similar films but it certainly wasn't bad.
I really like Giovani Ribisi but i wasn't sure about his character here. I had no idea why he was hanging around with these people, he didn't seem to like any of them much and was constantly arguing and being ridiculed by them. Even his relationship with his girlfriend just felt weird. He gave a good performance i just wasn't crazy about his character. He was constantly bitter and was a bit of downer tbh. Tim was just a very unlikeable and unpleasant person. Think Buff was my favourite character, he was the funniest. Also quite liked Pony.
Anyway yeah it was quite enjoyable just not one of his best. That's my 13th Linklater. Planning on finishing his filmography in the next few months hopefully. Must admit though the only one i'm really excited for is The Bad News Bears. Mostly because i love the original and i can totally see Billy Bob Thornton in Matthau's role.

My "AFI's 100 Years... 100 Laughs" list is at 30% and will probably stay there. I laughed a few times during this movie. The trailer(s) summed up the best parts. Many other parts were just stupid. Kiki's Delivery Service - 3+
http://i64.tinypic.com/2dwat80.png
Have had this recorded for ages so i decided to watch it. Since it was off Film 4 it was Dubbed. In general i hate dubs and always watch it subbed if i can. This was actually not bad dubbed, but i imagine i'd like it a bit more in Japanese. The only characters voice that really annoyed me was the cats though so it wasn't that big of a problem.
Gorgeous animation as always with Ghibli and Miyazaki. Man some of those flying scenes were just glorious. I liked the music too, it was very playful and reminded me of Final Fantasy or something. Kiki the character was pretty great, she could be a bit moody and she didn't treat Tombo that well at times but she was surprisingly complex and for the most part i thought her actions were understandable. One very minor thing that annoyed me was the characters randomly bursting into laughter. It comes across so unnatural and it happens in a lot of Anime i've watched. Not a big deal it just seems to be a fairly common thing that gets on my nerve.
Overall it was a nice, pleasant, simple film. How Miyazaki managed to make what is for the most part a teenage witch flying about doing deliveries and chores into a proper film is beyond me, but it worked. This won't become a major favourite but i enjoyed it and i'm glad to have watched it.

Yeah Raul hated it. I did hate it less than that K-On! thing Guap nominated for one of the HOFs though.
Yeah, Voigan was the one i was talking about. Forgot about PG i knew he would've. Surprised that Inmate did. I liked that ChardeeMacdennis guy but he didn't post much.
And that K-On! doesn't look like something i'd like at all either. PMMM seems to have some action and stuff so i think i might like that more. We'll see when i finally get to it. I've mostly been holding off because Guap said to watch a few episodes of the show beforehand since that is the second movie. I know i wouldn't have to and if i remember you didn't and you still followed it fine, but i'd like to watch it properly to give myself a better chance of liking it.

Yeah, I had no problem following it without having seen the show. It was doomed to be hated by me long before I pressed play anyway; watching the show would not have improved its chances. Magical girls? Forget it.

one of the best comedy movies i've seen.
the funniest line from the movie:
Fessal: 'Can I have 12 bottles of bleach please?'
Barry: What's that?
Fessal: It's a woman's voice 'cause... They'd want lots of liquid peroxide... So they can... Dye her hair or something...
Barry: And her beard.
Fessal: What?
Barry: You've got a beard!
Fessal: I covered it!
Barry: You covered your beard? How?
[Fessal covers his beard feebly with his own hands.]
Barry: So you went into a shop... With your hands on your face, like that, and asked for 12 bottles of bleach? So why has she got her hands on her face, Fess?
Fessal: [after an uncomfortably long silence.] 'Cause she's got a beard.

Space Pirate Captain Harlock (Japan) (2013) Computer Graphics: 4.5 Storyline: 2
The graphics would have been a solid 5 but some of the costumes seemed to have that old problem of looking more like a body mold than actual fabric that plagued early computer graphics WAAAY back in the day.
Scarcely remember the original series from my late teens/early twenties, but from my understanding they did a lousy job staying true to the original series (but then, who does, really?). Still, I'd echo one review I read when they stated they could have took some of the cash used for graphics and upped the story a bit. It really made it hard to make it through to the end.
I think I'll go find me an old version from the eighties or nineties and watch that

I wasn't sure what PMMM was. But now that I look it up, I know I watched it! I should check that Mofo Animations List. Talking about the series, it doesn't seem to be cool at all. But once you watch it wou will get that it's pretty darker that it seems. I don't remember what was it call, a gender, that was used to descrbribe this series and others, talking about how it's a satire of Magic Girls in general by making it realistic and dark! If I recall correctly, the PMMM movies aren't proper movies in the sense of being wholly separate from the show, but rather were just several episodes edited together for a limited theatrical release. Someone more familiar with the series/films can correct me if I'm wrong, though.

Damn, I said movies. Yep my bad, it's a series!
It's actually both, kind of.
It's a series, but they took the episodes of the series and edited them together to make three "movies."
Think it is similar to the Futurama movies which were originally aired as four sets of four episodes, basically four part stories. Later they were edited into 4 movies to make more money most likely because that was Futurama done with Fox at the time and they hadn't been picked up by Comedy Central yet.
Dog Soldiers - 3.5-
http://i68.tinypic.com/xqknbm.jpg
Good film but i didn't love it. I preferred The Descent mostly because i found the situation in The Descent one of the most horrifying imaginable obviously this is pretty horrifying too, but the difference is this is a bunch of trained soldiers no matter how dopey some of them are they were always going to be better equipped to deal with something like this than a bunch of thrill seeking girls, not to mention this was out in the open. I understand how ridiculous i'm being attempting to compare these two when they are nothing alike but i was expecting some of the same sort of tension that The Descent had and it never really came across for me. Which is more my fault than the films since i was going in with the wrong kind of expectations, but i was still slightly let down by that aspect because of this. One thing it has over The Descent is a lot more action which was fine for the most part but i must admit it lost my attention at times. It was good though, i really liked the look of it; the locations and the performances particularly Kevin McKidd who i usually hate so that was a surprise; it was also surprisingly funny at times.
Also got to say i knew Megan would be a werewolf the second she appeared so that did nothing for me.

I give it a 7.5 bear claws out of 10 for lack of a really good story.

Ponyo - 2.5
http://i64.tinypic.com/308xz6c.jpg
I enjoyed this. Don't think it would be one i'd be interested in re watching anytime soon though. As with all of Miyazaki and Ghibli films for the most part it had stunning animation. At times it felt a bit too bright and colourful though, it was slightly displeasing visually. It was daytime and good weather, or under the sea most of the movie and there were so many bright greens and blues, yellows, pinks, etc, that it felt a bit overwhelming at times. It certainly had some amazing sequences though. The tsunami scene being a big highlight.
Personally my main problem was that i didn't find the story as engaging as the other Miyazaki's i've seen even the ones i'm not a big fan of i found more interesting. Also i didn't really love any of the characters, i felt Ponyo falling in love with Sosuke happened way too soon and wasn't very convincing. Ponyo and just alot of things in this were really adorable, maybe it was a little overly cutesy at times but i didn't find it that irritating.
While i didn't love any of this and it is probably my least favourite Miyazaki, i still found it too pleasant to actually dislike. I'm really glad i watched it subbed, i could see this being pretty unbearable in English haha.

I wouldn't say I hated it, though. It's a relatively engaging piece of work but it is rather derivative and ultimately settles into the B-movie pulpiness one would expect of a movie that is essentially Schwarzenegger vs Satan (and the late-'90s supernatural horror aesthetic works against it a bit to boot), but it's interesting to see the big guy try something different. This also goes for Maggie, which is definitely not what you'd expect from a movie that features both zombies and Schwarzenegger.

LFO (2013) - rating_3
I didn't know much about this movie going into it, other than the fact that it was sci-fi, Scandinavian, had something to do with sound (based on the name), and that MonnoM suggested I watch it. Early in the film I was surprised when the main character started talking about Tinnitus, because I've actually intermittently suffered from that condition since I was a kid. It's mostly irrelevant to the plot, but I just wanted to point out what a strange coincidence it was.
Most of the film is intentionally dull (in tone, colours, and pacing), but managed to keep my interest with Robert's increasingly daring experiments, and the occasional laugh or quirky moment. Just when the movie felt like it was going on for too long, there's a shift in tone and character motivation that keeps things fresh for the final act. Despite being rather dark at face value, the end is actually pretty light-hearted and funny. Or perhaps I just have a sick sense of humour.

I did like the movie though. As I've said before, I think rating_2_5 is average, and films scoring lower than that can certainly still be enjoyable. That's why I sent you a PM with a heads up that my rating scale is probably a bit lower than yours. ;)
The movie didn't give me a headache, no. I didn't find it annoying at all, and I thought the sound design was very fitting for the film. It's certainly not the "calming" tone it's initially described as being, but it didn't cause any problems for me.
The ending is definitely my favourite part of the movie. I wasn't quite expecting the film to go there, but at the same time it wasn't at all surprising. It's kind of hard to describe...much like the rest of the movie haha.

Yeah, I read the PM after I wrote that. We have a different rating system, ha. As I've mentioned in my somewhat-but-not-really review, the sound was the only reason I didn't rate it higher. It gave me a horrible headache afterward. I completely agree about the ending, it wasn't something wholly unexpected, yet it was unexpected and blew me away. I think it's that we knew the path it was taking, we just didn't expect what was at the end of that road. :D

That whole second act where the crew gets picked off one by one slasher-style? I can concede that it's not that scary but that doesn't make it any less reliant on horror tropes. It's not like The Terminator doesn't have a similarly horror-based premise either - the Terminator clearly owes a debt to Michael Myers in how it is an inhuman/indestructible killer that silently and relentlessly stalks its prey through the night. Just because there are shoot-outs and car chases and time travel doesn't remove it that much from the slasher-like mechanics at its core (though they obvious get replaced by more emphasis on sci-fi and action with each new installment). You can make the case that End of Days is a more straightforward example of horror simply because it doesn't involve sci-fi in any capacity but that would be downplaying the elements in those earlier movies.
Anyway...

The worst were scenes featuring magic. Made me chuckle. If you take visual aspect then movie wasn't impressive at all. CGI was too noticable, overused and kinda bad in my opinion. Nothing epic.
Movie was made by boring rules. Too safe... They could have done so much more, but they took paper called "How to make another generic action movie" and checked every single line.

It wasn't that bad, if you approach it with a positive attitude and some consideration for the time period. If I had to grow up in the 50's, I would have risked life and limb to get my parents' permission to let me watch this film. It would have been one of those greatest things since sliced bread. It was better, more exciting and more imaginative, than many 60's Star Trek episodes I've seen on TV. Acting was more than bearable. There was a babe. Monsters were pretty cool. Make-up was done well enough to be noticed in B/W. I actually wanted to see it through to the end. If you're brave enough, give it a try, but, don't forget your SPF 15.:D

This is a mystery/thriller that has Charlize Theron playing a woman who has been living off of stranger's donations ever since her mother and two sisters were murdered when she was a little girl. Her testimony helped put her brother, who dabbled in satanic worship, in prison. She is about broke when she gets a letter from someone offering to pay her to make an appearance. The person is a part of a club, sort of like Movie Forums, except the people follow true crime stories and actually meet. These people believe her brother is innocent, and from there we spend half of the movie with Theron investigating the facts of that night, and the other half being shown what actually happened. This is worth watching if you like twisted serial killer types of movies. The direction is merely adequate, but the story stays interesting. Also starring Christina Hendricks, Chloe Grace Moretz, Tye Sheridan, and Drea de Matteo.

Expecting something decently entertaining but disappointed. Thing is after the original TBWP, particularly in this found footage genre there were significant amount of movies came out with this "there's something in the woods" set up and even if I take it as a standalone film, this is still an average or actually a below average flick in compare to those. And as I just said, there were movies with quite similar set ups came out before but didn't get much attention & received mixed to bad reviews mostly but here the case is the title itself and it's relation to the cult favorite & one of the most influential genre films that came out in last 20 years, I guess. Otherwise, films like A NIGHT IN THE WOODS (2011), HOLLOW (2011) or NIGHTLIGHT (2015) also offered very similar premise & events in their stories where few people gets lost in the woods & experience some sinister force of unknown evil is haunting them one by one but actually worked or did better with creepy encounters/scare tactics than this one. That's why it gets me now wondering how this same film would do or left impact to the same audience if it had no connection with TBWP!?!
Anyway, in the film I found the characters were very mediocre...didn't care for any of them; jump scares weren't much effective at all, mostly filled with sudden loud noises & mix of static sounds (if anyone interested to only watch a new horror film for better & decent amount of jump scares, then I'd recommend the recent cyber horror flick FRIEND REQUEST). The ending kinda reminded me of REC finale also (mainly the way they tried to reveal the Witch this time!) but overall it was just another lame, cash in effort and another crap Adam Wingard film (expect THE GUEST which was an action-thriller & enjoyed a lot than his horror films).

Felt like watching a Hitch and i decided on this one because i don't think i've ever heard anyone talk about it. It was fantastic IMO. At this point i'm expecting to find most of his films just average or like i've seen the same thing from him before, but just about every time i end up enjoying the hell out of it.
Loved the Hitchcock introduction. It was only 30 seconds long or something but it was just so unexpected and i liked the shot of him standing in the shadows, also i am in love with his voice, everytime i hear it i'm just amazed that a person like him actually existed. I half expected the true story part to be a lie or a distortion in a similar vein to what Welles says in F For Fake because i could never trust a man with that voice haha. Reading that these events actually happened and that Hitch followed them closely after i watched it was just amazing to me, it has so many similar aspects to the stories in other Hitch films mistaken identity, distrust of authorities, etc that it was almost like these events happened just so Hitch could film them one day.
It was a Hitch film so it was of course visually interesting, even the ones i don't like have so many intriguing lighting choices, camera angles, etc. The scenes were he was walking around the stores so people could see if it was him or not were so well done, Fonda seemed so scared and confused but still so bafflingly compliant with something that surely could never have been standard procedure. The desperate "please, you know it wasn't me" look he gives when he takes his hat off was outstanding, and hermanns score made the scene all the better, so chilling and low that you barely notice it was there. Man that spinning cell scene was glorious for how short it was, i know it was really obvious but i still really likedhow it showed the way Manny's world was like at that moment and again Hermann's score played a large part in making it work. Rose going nuts was such a random unexpected thing to happen it was good though, she was great in the hairbrush scene even though the sound of the hairbrush hitting Manny was ridiculous.
Anyway great film. This was my 15th Hitchcock and i think it is fantastic that i am still loving them.

This would seem to me to be one of the lesser known best picture winners. I hadn't recalled ever hearing of it before, and just happened to come across it on On Demand. Gregory Peck plays a widowed writer who goes to New York with his little boy and mom. He gets a job with a magazine to write a story on antisemitism, and the publisher wants something good. Meanwhile he meets the bosses niece and they fall in love. Peck's character decides to pretend that he's a Jew in order to get first hand experience. Peck is always a stud, and the rest of the cast is also very good. The story plays out nicely, and every aspect of the movie is solid. I didn't think it was a movie that is particularly great in any way, but it is well worth watching.

Assassination (Korean) (2015) 5 Completely and UTTERLY impressed with this Korean Resistance Fighter movie during World War II. While, most likely, it was far more stylized than historic in any fashion, it still remains captivating and a thoroughly enjoyable film. With so many twists and double and triple dealings it may be hard to follow for some and therefore require a second viewing; that is the one and ONLY critique I have for this film. Intelligently written with dramatic and comedic moments beautifully blended. Every involved brings so much to the screen.
A must see for those enjoy such films!!

I didn't remember any of this after 20 years. Bogart is fantastic and has some great dialogue to work with. The rest of the cast does well too. After about a third of the way through, I was thinking this would be a new favorite. I loved the story at first, and I normally favor plot rich movies, but I got a little sick of trying to follow this one. For once, I would have been happy with less plot so I could just enjoy the interplay between the characters. With more viewings and understanding, I'm sure my feelings would grow stronger.

The problem with this film is how 'basic' it all is. The performances, the direction, the plot. It screams for something more, but it just didn't deliver on those things.
Even the ending, which I'm assuming if suppose to shock you, makes you roll your eyes (I did). In terms of Flynn novels, Gone Girl is obviously better and the film is better as well. It would have been interesting to see someone with a better directing resume tackle this story.

"Give an arab a sword and he turns it into a knife."*Cuts a 3' log in half, flips the blade with remarkable dexterity*It works."*Looks at him for a second*"When you die, can I give that to my daughter?"
From the director of Die hard and the man who wrote Jurassic park comes...a tale of an arabic envoy getting imbedded with vikings and fights demon cannibals? I'M SO IN!!!
This is somthing of a weakspot for me. Bad action shlock. This is the kind of movie I sit down with my dad on a friday night after work and just rattle off a couple of. Movies with a paperthin story, characters that are so thin they should be transparant and action scenes galore. It's the Rush hours, Under sieges, Leathal weapons, Commandos and The Rocks of the world...and how I love them. I genuinely think all those I rattled off above are awesome, including this one. Do I realize they have faults (like, humongous, gaping flawes)? Yes, of course. I can't with a strait face call any of them essential viewing or really well written, but I still love them. As soon as they start, whatever part of my brain that's trying to tell me that this is garbage gets...well, not turned off, I realize that the faults are there, but perhaps temporarily muted is a better discription. That's how I can sit through arnie's continuosly expanding/shrinking ammo belt from the final shoot-out in Commando, for instans.
This movie, though, sits on the higher levels of quality when it comes to these kinds of movies. Not many goofs as far as I've noticed, wierd line readings and strange repetitions are here aplenty but other than that there's not much. Except the supporting characters of course. They are thin, very thin. Except for Banderas character, they often don't get names until after they're dead. The IMDB page had to atribute them adjectives after their names so they could distinguish them from one another, which I found hilarious. The list reads as if they're listing off-brand dwarves who got cut from Snow White:laugh:.
But back on topic. Banderas plays a arabic poet living in Baghdad. After making goo-goo eyes at the wrong girl he gets banished by the sultan and sent as an envoy to the north. On the way...north I guess, they never did specify where he was going, he rests at a river that happens to be the site of a funeral. A viking chief is to be set ablaze and Banderas is invited to the festiveties. The morning after a ship docks and the new chief gets summond home to defend a village under attack. An oracle fortells that 13 warriors must go, but that the 13th can't be from the north. Cue Banderas getting pulled into the procedings. Now he must travel even further than he thought and on top of it all, he has to fight. And he can't speak the language.
But here somthing happens that pretty much results in the 5/5 you saw above. On the journey north, this happens:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aVVURiaVgG8
Over several nights sitting at the capfires (we're probably talking about weeks if not months of travel compressed into a few shots) Banderas slowly picks up a word here, a frase there, until the culmination of one night, when he answers an insult and gives back in kind. This is probably the best visual representation of a character suddenly being able to understand people who don't speak the same language. A lazier director would've simply ignored the fact that they spoke norse and arabic, or simply had a character act as an interpreter throughout. I allways liked how they handled the same problem in The Hunt for Red October. They start out speaking russian, then tightening in on their mouths and when they zoomed out again they were speaking english. We as the audience understand that they're still speaking russian, but now we understand what they're saying without having the actors actually learning russian or us reading subtitles continously. This, though, blew October out of the water, if you could forgive the pun. This is the single best scene in the entire movie.
Oh, and when they get there they find out some kind of demon cannibals are ravishing the village or whatever.
This movie is a favourite of mine in the action shlock genre. See it for that scene and some awesome viking fighting, but if you need a complex story of deep characters to be entertained, go somewhere else. I do, I like those things too, when I'm in that mood. But I also realize that some mindnumbing action is also sometimes required.

#FollowFriday: 1 I care about Syfy movies far more than I should. Obviously it's a bad movie, but it's not very fun, and I hate it when 40 year old writers and directors use film as a medium to make fun of 20 year olds.
War Dogs: 2_5 The least good entry into the quickly growing "comedies about real-life people chasing the American Dream" genre. It's a fine movie if you want to watch it, and has a great Jonah Hill performance, but I agree with the consensus that you should just stay home and rent Pain & Gain or The Big Short.

The Train Robbers (1973)
Light late-career John Wayne, but watchable nevertheless. The Duke gets together with a couple of old friends (Ben Johnson and Rod Taylor) and three others (Christopher George, Bobby Vinton *really!*---he was also in Wayne's Big Jake, and some actor named Jerry Gatlin) to aid Ann-Margret who still looks fabulous here. She feels guilty because her late husband robbed a train and hid the half-million in gold somewhere in Mexico where only she knows the location. There's a group of about twenty men on their trail, wanting to get their hands on the gold, and there's a mysterious cigar-smoking, well-dressed Ricardo Montalban following them. Action is spread throughout the flick, the fellows talk about the good old days, the Duke punches a few of them when angered as is his wont, Ann looks smashing in her tight jeans and top, lots of gun-play and a twist at the end, which is rare for a Wayne movie. Turn your brain on neutral and enjoy.

The Secret Garden (1993)
Classic, often remade film about an orphaned 10-year-old girl, Mary, who is moved to her only relatives who live in a large mansion in the English countryside. She is somewhat spoiled but soon loses her selfishness when she discovers the garden of the title, and meets a local boy who helps her begin to bring the garden back to life. She also finds that she has a cousin her age who is shuttered away because everyone thinks he is severely ill. His father, her uncle, mourns for his wife, who has been dead for years, and he is often traveling rather than be at home where he's reminded of her and neglecting his son because he also reminds the uncle of what he's lost. The three main children are excellent, especially Kate Maberly as Mary and Heydon Prowse as her pampered but overlooked cousin, Colin. John Lynch is fine as Mary's hurting uncle and Maggie Smith is her usual super self as the main caretaker of the house, who always thinks the young Colin is near death.
This is a movie I can truly call magical, but real "magic" really doesn't enter into the movie---the magic is brought about mainly by Mary, with the other two kids following suit in bringing this hidden garden into bloom and lifting the gloom from the mansion, the family, and the staff. A totally charming movie that starts sad but goes uphill all the way to the very end. I don't know if the other versions are good or not, but I can't imagine them topping this one. Recommended for everyone.

Dance of the Dead (2008)
Fun movie where the dead come to life on the night of the High School prom, and the school losers who rise to the occasion and fight the undead. Lots of fun and gore and zombies who dig heavy metal music, I kid you not! Acted by a group of unknown young actors who do fine in this, especially the beautiful Greyson Chadwick as the one of the group who was actually going to the prom but is sidetracked when her jerk date gets chomped by the zombies. Action galore and laughs to boot. Check it out if its your kind of movie. It's right up my alley.

Midnight Special
Quite enjoyed this. It was helped by two solid performances from Joel Edgerton and Michael Shannon, two actors who I find very much alike in style (serious and brooding) and quite an interesting premise of another world on top of ours but leaves you with many questions

I saw in the theater too, but that was back when the old theater in my town was doing their two-for Tuesday special. So I paid like $2.50 to see it. I still want my money back.

Yeah, the only reason I gave it that half bucket was because it leaves such a small impact that I don't view it as harmful to the art of cinema, and one bit of slapstick that is actually kind of pure brilliance.

A Short Film About Killing (1988)
3+
http://www.historia.ro/sites/default/files/9_114.jpg
It's not a short film as some of us would know one, but it is less than 90 minutes. Very bleak and realistic with a brutal murder as it's centerpiece. There's 3 main characters; a killer, a victim, and a defense attorney. Ultimately, the movie is about questioning the death penalty. It didn't blow me away like I had hoped, but it is powerful. I was impressed enough that I looked up the director afterwards to see what else he had done, and it turns out that it's the same guy responsible for the Three Colors Trilogy, as well as other notable works. This movie has a higher IMDb score than those others.

The Shallows Review (not recommended)
I knew the story coming in as I had seen the trailer. Even with this prior knowledge and my expectations adjusted, I found the shallows very hard to swallow. Basically, Nancy, is trapped on a small rock some distance from the shore. She had travelled to a secluded paradise beach in memoriam of her mother who had recently passed. She’s attacked, trapped and a shark is circling.
Again, my expectations were adjusted. I’m happy to watch a B movie. The oceans a scary place and sharks are scary. Sometimes you want a movie to keep your attention, to give you that thrill however superficial. The duration of the film (86 mins) is its strongest asset. It does keep your attention for that short time, meaning, its short enough for you to watch it all without turning it off just to see what happens. Regarding the thrill, there is little to no thrill.
A common trope in movies is a ticking time bomb mechanic. If something is not changed by this time, then bang consequences. It’s obvious in the movie Star wars a new hope. The death star is closing in on the Rebel base; if the rebels don’t destroy the Death Star, the planet/base will be destroyed. This effectively builds tension. In The Shallows Nancy is stuck on a rock at what seems to be low tide. High tide and low tide is mentioned but not emphasized. Will the rock become submerged at high tide? They try to weave this in at the end but not only have we felt no building tension, it’s also a plot hole because she seemed to stay on the rock for a full day night cycle.
From about the half way mark, or even less, everything that happens is just silly and/or luck. Nancy doesn’t outwit the Shark, she out lucks it. Without going into spoilers, there’s an abundance of coincidences and illogicalities. It’s really one coincidence after another, pooling together getting us through to the 86 minute mark.
Then there’s the quality of the CGI. My god, Deep Blue Sea could have better special effects. It’s 16 years old and can hold its own compared to this. There are legitimate grounds for debate as to whether it is actually better.
Am I being too hard on the film? Were my expectations to high? I really don’t think so. I saw the trailer, I thought I knew what to expect. Obviously there’s not much of a story but I won’t mark it down for that, we expect that. The acting, it’s not going to win an academy award but we expected that. It’s meant to be a thrill ride yet the oceans not as scary as it could/should be, the jump scares are minimal, the impending dread is minimal. Too many things happen that take you out of the experience (a B movie experience), things that make you think, bull%$#. That overrides it all in the end. You leave with a sour taste in your mouth. And one more thing, that shark is mighty hungry, were talking Monty Pythons The meaning of Life restaurant scene Hungry.
As I’ve been so critical of the film here is my list of the best Shark movies I recommend entertainment wise:
Jaws, Open Water, Deep Blue Sea, The Reef (Australian movie) and Jaws 2. All of these movies are a class above. Not sure how good Jaws 2 is now days though, haven’t seen it in a while.

This slasher film has everything, nature-documentary-style narrating, a touch of comedy, a hint of action, a bit of drama, a tad of horror, a little crime, funny faces, some Gin (I think) and a trombone. I like the way it was presented, from screams to jokes.

Green Room (2016)
I'd give it 6.5/10. It's a suspenseful thriller horror mashup that delivers a real tense punch to you. There are a couple of good performances, and some noteful gore / violence. But that's where it ends really. It's lack of originality is a flaw and in the end just joins a collection of other films that come and go and won't be very memorable in 10 years time.

Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson (2004)
You don't have to be a fan of boxing to enjoy this but it would help. Directed by Ken Burns, this documentary recalls the successful but cruel life of one of the greatest boxers of all time. Throw in narration by Keith David, voice over with Samuel L Jackson and you have yourself a brilliant film. Well worth the 3 1/2 + hours.

Worthy of it's place in the top 100 Sci-fi.
HOLY ****, what an opening. It was beautiful...and at the same time it set up a gag later in the movie that makes total sense and is awesome at the same time. And I totally didn't see it (the set-up, that is). Too bad it went downhill from there.
It was a good movie, don't get me wrong, but the opening pull out was the most beautiful scene in the whole thing. Jodie Foster was...a bit weaker than usual, John Hurt was awesome (as allways) and William Fitchner put in a great performance as a blind man. Oh, and McConaughey plays a priest... See it for a quality Sci-fi, but mostly for the opening shot. 3/5

Don't subject yourself to this sh*t, granted it's not as tasteless as the first, they don't say that no one died on the Titanic again, but it is just nonsense, I don't know how many drugs these filmmakers must have been on, it is transcendentally stupid.
