Oh yeah, Oculus is a good one. Was that independent or major, though?
I mean, I'm not opposed to a horror film immediately if it's modern and a major release. They certainly might be good. But often, I find, that's not the case.

I think it's major but I'm not 100% sure though...
And yeah I totally understand your opinion
I mean, you can probably say something similar about low budget or independent releases. It's not like being an independent horror film means it's destined to be great. Nothing is ever really that black and white, in art. But, I like the low budget and creative aesthetic more than the aesthetic of most major horror films, which I find often just do jump scares and are too typical, because they only want money. They lack a creative freedom, which is possibly the thing I admire most about good horror films. Think about The Evil Dead. Those guys took a wooden board and stuck a camera on it and made some awesome moving camera shots with it. That fact alone signifies everything I love about horror cinema - the creative strength and freedom of the genre.

JayDee, I was sorry to read about your Nana. It's a very special relationship between a Nan and a grandchild. She'll have been a big influence on your life that you'll remember all your life. That generation was tough, and it sounds like she had it tougher than a lot of people, but I bet you had some great times with her and like you say she had a long ol' life .
RIP JD's Nana

Thanks Christine. Sadly most of the occasions where I spent lots of time with her was when I was a young kid and those memories are just little snatches her and there. I remember a big art project we did together; drawing a never-ending street scene on an old roll of wallpaper. I remember going to the library and the transport museum with her; Camo will know about the latter one. A number of TV shows I watched as a kid I associate with her being by my side; Sooty, Rainbow, Rosie & Jim, Brum etc. Oh and she made the greatest French toast in history; I was obsessed with it and my mum could never replicate it.
But in addition to being a lovely person she was also a bit of a character. The one single moment that sticks out from that time above all others is her losing her false teeth onto railway tracks! We were on the bridge looking down to the tracks below when her teeth slipped out and fell the 30-40 ft to the ground. Her trying to explain what had happened to officials when she could hardly speak was about the funniest thing ever to my young mind.
When it came to TV shows she had eclectic taste. She was a fan of many shows you'd expect a wee old woman to like; Heartbeat, Doc Martin, Murder She Wrote etc. But then she also loved all the CSI's. And strangest of all she loved watching Jeremy Kyle!!! Though that was only in the last few years really so I blame the dementia for that! :D
And as this is a movie forum here's a little film story. Back in 2005 when Peter Jackson's remake of King Kong was released I was talking to her about it and what a huge spectacle it was. She told me about watching the original classic back in 1933!!! She remembered what an incredible event it was, unlike anything she or her friends had ever seen at the time. Imagine the experience of seeing the original King Kong film in cinemas and what a sensation it must have been

Well today sucks.
I woke up this morning unable to open my left eye. Staggered into the bathroom and had a look in the mirror to discover that my eyelids were basically glued together with dried pus. Got my eye cleaned up and then called and got an appointment for the doctor. Acute conjunctivitis. Yay me. On the plus side, the doctor wrote me off work for the day. On the negative side, the medicine she prescribed distorts my depth perception so everything is wonky right now. Also, I have to put the drops in five times a day. I've always had a terrible time putting anything into my eyes so treating this is going to be quite an ordeal.

A couple of years ago on a windy day I got something in my eye, but at first I didn't care and went to school, but then I had tears pouring from my eyes and running nose and I used a lot of tissues, but nothing would help and it was getting worse and worse, so I called my mother and we went to hospital and they said they didn't find anything in my eye (probably already escaped with tears) but there for sure was something that irritated my eye and caused all of this. I had photophobia for a couple of hours after this and felt like sh*t.

Watching the original King Kong must've been amazing! I remember seeing it at Saturday morning pictures circa 1965 and I was scared then. My friend slid off her seat onto the floor and started crying. It's unbelievable now that kids could be scared by that original film given all the media they're bombarded with now...ah we had innocent times :D

I seriously thought of doing a song list from the songs I enjoyed while in High School.. perhaps I should... I love some classic rock and stuff from the early 80s....
thoughts anyone?
You should do it.

I would probably only do songs from 1980 through 1982.. those are the ones that had the most impact on what I listen to as music... however I graduated in 1985.....
I think it's a good idea for a list.

Btw, MV get better soon. I don't want that pink eye to make you any more bitchier. :p
I feel like I've actually been a lot less bitchy than usual these last two or three weeks. I think it's because I've been obsessively listening to upbeat pop music this whole time. It puts me in a better mood.
However, today was not a good day. At work, I spent 48 minutes on the phone with AT&T (most of which was spent on hold) trying to get an issue with the business lines sorted out. This was like the twelfth call I've had with them in the last two weeks trying to get this same issue fixed. I kind of lost my ***** with the customer service lady who was helping me, too, which I'm not proud of. But their idea of a customer service line is just one big cluster**** of a phone tree that sends you round in circles and every time you talk to somebody you have to explain the same situation over and over. Then they tell you that they can't help you but that they'll transfer you to somebody else who can and then the cycle repeats and nothing gets accomplished. Also their idea of holding "for a moment" means being stuck listening to the same obnoxious hold music for a good 10 minutes only to have them say "it'll be just one more moment' and put you back on hold for another 10 minutes.
Sounds awful MV. Glad to hear your eye is feeling better at least.
Miss Vicky
08-26-15, 03:14 AM
Oh yeah, and my brilliant manager had me working with the two least experienced employees this afternoon, one of which just started working there yesterday. So I'm trying to juggle this infuriating phone call and attempting to instruct the new hire on what to do.
Fun times.
Ouch, that must have been real pain in the ass. I especially agree and can relate to your description of music that comes out while you receive customer service, it sounds like sh*t but once it enters your brain you can't get it out until the next day. And the people who answer your calls are always in some sort of down-beat mood, although I don't blame them much.
Makes me feel bad that I love my job. :D

no she was 8. This was back in 1965. Dr Who was the scariest thing on tv (and it was scary) . We had no video or dvd don't forget, so seeing King Kong on the big screen was pretty effective.
Miss Vicky
08-26-15, 03:31 AM
Yeah, I'm sure that job really sucks and it wasn't that lady's fault but this company has some of the worst customer service I've encountered.
That 48 minute call was actually the third time I was on the phone with AT&T just today. I called this morning and fought my way through the phone tree and got somebody, only to be put on hold so long that the line eventually disconnected. So I called again and talked to somebody else, who told me that they couldn't help me but that they'd have someone who could help me call me back in about an hour. Well I got the call back (in the middle of my lunch break, of course), only this person didn't know WTF they were doing and told me that they'd transfer me to the right department. Well the hold message for whatever department that was said that the wait would be over an hour and that I could request a call back instead. So I did. Then they called back like three hours later and that was the 48 minute call which I still don't think solved anything.

Miss V. I feel your frustration. The thing is you feel really bad when you get snippy with the person on the other end but you know damn well they're often on minimum wage and poorly trained.
My husband who is involved with our local community centre has an ongoing issue with their electricity provider that's been going on for months now. There's two meters, a daytime one and a cheaper night rate one and the company have got the readings the wrong way round. He keeps phoning them, explaining, sending photos, convincing the person that answers who then says they'll do something about it but when the next bill comes in it's still wrong. He's emailed the managing director who just got someone to phone back to say they were sorting it and didn't, so now he's acting on his threat to find another provider . I can't remember having all these problems when the leccy and gas companies were nationalised companies :(
Miss Vicky
08-26-15, 05:54 AM
Yikes, that sounds like a pain. I guess I should be thankful that my issue has been happening over a few weeks and not months.
Our problem is that at the beginning of the month we were informed that our old voicemail system was being discontinued and we had to switch over to their new one. Well we did that and then the voicemail didn't work at all. After several (also infuriating) calls to AT&T, I got the voicemail working, but then the call forwarding somehow got screwed up.
When a call comes in when our primary phone line is busy, it's supposed to forward the call to a secondary line. If that secondary line is also busy, the call is supposed to get forwarded to a third line. If all three lines are busy, it's supposed to go to voicemail. I've worked at this office for ten years. It's always worked like that until this stupid voicemail switch. Now if a call comes in and line one is busy, the call gets sent directly to voicemail instead of to the other lines. It's ridiculous. We're paying for three phone lines but can only use one of them. And whatever the hell went wrong is on their end but they're just sitting on their butts doing nothing about it.
Well today sucks.
I have to put the drops in five times a day. I've always had a terrible time putting anything into my eyes .
Me too but after wearing contacts for years now I can do anything :yup:
Oh Hang on this isn't about me :nope: get better soon

It's too simplistic to say the lady hates horror. She probably doesn't even realize that's from a movie. So what she sees is a possessed looking young woman with tarantulas around her. There's multiple reasons the image bothers her -- hates spiders, bothered by the idea of spiders surrounding a pretty woman's face, fears death, doesn't like pretty young women, etc.
My point is she may not hate horror -- hell, maybe she LOVES horror but hates that particular movie. There's multiple possible reasons the t-shirt strikes a nerve with her.

Those poor people. Didn't they just move in this past week? Look at how fast you scared them away.
I wish they had moved out that fast. I think they lived here about 4 or 5 years. When they moved in, they were just dating, but over the years, they got married and had a kid. The kid is about 2 years old now.

Yeah, we thought about that, but we're keeping our fingers crossed.
It will be hard for anyone to be worse than these people. They complained that our TV set was too loud, when we could barely hear in in the same room with the TV, they said that we walked too loud, they complained every time we flushed the toilet or used the water that they could hear it, etc. (He said that they like to sleep in complete silence, so we weren't allowed to watch TV at night, or we should go out and buy headphones and use them to watch TV. We told him to go complain to the co-op management office, because that wasn't going to happen.)
But it was okay that they were constantly doing work to their home with drilling and hammering starting at 7:00 AM, he mounted his speakers on their ceiling, (our floor), and played his music and video games so loud that it felt like an earthquake, the baby cried all day and night, they constantly left the shared outer door open, (not just unlocked, but completely open), no matter how many times we asked them to close it, etc.
I don't know how anyone can be worse than them.
Tried to take a break from this place. Yeah that went so well. I'm back to posting again.

The Alamo Drafthouse smiles upon me this month. Not only did I buy a ticket to see Lawrence of Arabia on the big screen next week, but at the end of September I got my ticket to see Rashomon!

Seriously, GB? Complaining that you walked too loud?
And angry about the toilet and the water issues? You can't control that.
And these were YOUNG people? I assume young since you said they were originally dating and then got married and started a family. Young people are usually more nonchalant about these things. Usually -- and I have to say in your case, I'm SURPRISED it's not the other way around -- the older people are the complainers.
I should have nominated this song for the song tourney:

Yes, seriously, they complained about everything. They expected complete silence at night. They even complained about noise in the middle of the afternoon if the baby was sleeping.
And yes, they were young, about 25-30ish.

Her and I agree... he's too good to be in Rogue Nation... he's an artist actor... not just a regular actor...
Most of his films are very artistic.. even the this season of Hannibal comes across that way..
Not sure how I feel about him in Doctor Strange.. but I cant wait to see if he's actually in Kung Fu Panda 3..... I love the movies and the cartoon....

Wow this is going to be a good month at the cinema for me. Bought advanced tickets to screenings of the entire Apu Trilogy at The Texas Theater.
Classic film viewing for Gunslinger this month:
Lawrence of Arabia
Blue Velvet
The Rocky Horror Picture Show
Rashomon
The Apu Trilogy
Hmmm, I want to buy some new music but not sure what to get. Agoraphobic Nosebleed? Cattle Decapitation? The possibilities are endless!

I guess some lady wrinkled her nose at my Beyond shirt today. It's hilarious to me how intensely some people hate horror.
She was looking at your man t!ts, not your shirt.
I'm listening to Pig Destroyer in the dentists office. That probably makes me totally lame, actually.

And then you're like: WHERE ARE MY TEETH?!
I didn't know until now that they just got a bassist. All this time listening to Phantom Limb under the assumption that there was bass.
