Good to be back after some hiatus. How are all you "MoFo's" doing these days? Between the last time I was here and now, I was smoking five packs a day, (now quit the junk all together for a year now), and I'm headed back into college for a masters in Film and English, and (down the road when I chew on those for awhile), a degree in Mathematics. All things well here. (And btw, I LOVE the new site reboot! Amazing looking). Take care friends! Now I'm off to watch me a Movie!
Good to have you back, man. Nice to hear things are well.
Though I beg to differ on the new site layout (sorry Chris).
Can't please everyone. Though the new layout's come awfully close.
What's everyone up to on a friday night?
Not much. Aunt came down to visit for a week. You?
Slow weekend. Going to how to train your dragon with the kiddos tomorrow. Tonight laundry. I am sooo 38
I saw the first How to Train Your Dragon. It was good, but it seemed a lot of people liked it more than I did. I don't have anything against it though.
I wasn't blown away either. Just watched it a couple weeks ago. I thought it was fun and visually good.
I don't respond to animation like I used to. In High School I loved Disney stuff.
I love animation, but I like more unique animation.

This World Cup is going to ruin my studies. :p
Have fun at the theater, seanc! Some say the sequel of HTTYD is (even) better than the original!
I am making my way through the Miyazaki stuff (I will speak freely because Guaps not on). I get what people are responding to but the dialogue is so bad to me. I like a lot of the other elements of his films but doubt I will fall in love with any because of the writing.
Do you watch them with subtitles or with the English dubs? Some people don't like English dubs. I hate the English dub for Fantastic Planet, but I have found Myazaki's movies to have good English dubs.
I think I have watched 7 and 3 have been subtitled. Someone else mentioned that to me. I don't think it has mattered as the dubs are really well done. Of the three I have watched subtitled two have been my least favorite.

I had a friend that it used to frustrate to no end that I didn't love Miyazaki the way he did. He just felt judging from the other stuff I like that those movies would be right up my alley. There are some I like well enough, but I don't love and My Neighbor Totoro downright irritates me. It's nothing I can put my finger on. Most of the movies just don't click with me.
Yeah. I think I finally pinpointed it and I don't think I am getting over it. I still have a few to go though so we shall see. I don't hate his movies either, I just don't love them. Admittedly there are a couple that I don't like but plenty more that I think are good. With some directors if you don't say love, the populous only hears hate.

Spirited Away is truly a great film to me. Castle of Cagliostro is good fun entertainment. Howls Moving Castle and Nausicaa are average to me.
Porco Rosso has been my favorite so far. Totoro and Howl's not far behind. Spirited Away is still ahead of me.
Incidentally that means I think Howl's is average too rauldc.

I like Miyazaki's films well enough in general (I haven't seen his very first and last picture yet), but there are only three films of his that I would ever call "personal favorites" (I still really like some of the others too). Those three would be Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro and Porco Rosso.
I still haven't seen Porco Rosso or Totoro. Yeah, yeah, I know. Like always, I'm behind.
I hadn't seen any till two months ago so your ahead of me. I get weird compulsions. I made up my mind I needed to see all of Miyazaki so I could be a part of the anime conversation around here, so that's what I am doing.

So on another topic, I don't want to stop doing small movie tournaments, but I noticed in my last one several movies going pretty far because only a couple of people had seen them. I'm thinking of starting a four vote rule in my future tournaments. (Basically requiring four people to have seen a movie in order for it to advance) Sound like a good idea, or no?
I think next on my agenda is another tv character tournament. Those are fun and lots of people participate.

I kind of gathered that from a couple of things I have seen you say. I envy that. I hate when I haven't seen everything. I have been putting off Bergman for a year just because I want to see enough Wilder and Allen to be satisfied enough to move on to a couple more directors. If your weird I am an idiot.

I don't think I even have a favorite actor and actress anymore. I used to watch movies more for the performances more than anything. That has changed a lot the last few years. Obviously I still have actors I enjoy, but no true favorites.
Yeah, picking favorite actors/actresses is a hard thing. It's not set in stone for me. I just went through a big Bergman phase though, so she is my current favorite.

Wilder? Just 5 so far: The Apartment, Sunset Boulevard, Double Indemnity, Some Like It Hot and The Lost Weekend. Either Ace in the Hole or One, Two, Three is next, I think.
Speaking of things we talked about lately. I watched From Up On Poppy Hill last night which was my first non-Miyazaki anime in about 20 years. I like it more than anything else I have seen, is that sacrilegious? I'm truly not trying to be a contraction. It was a very sweet story and pretty well written. It's a good idea, but it probably won't work for the tournament unless people nominate more popular/widely seen films.
I just saw this. It's pretty much a problem without a good solution. My movie got through two rounds simply because for awhile I was the only one who could vote for it. That was hardly fair. When I think about it more pulling a movie because it doesn't get votes would be the same as allowing people to vote in brackets where they haven't seen both movies. I think other types of tournaments work much better and I probably won't be doing movie ones anymore.

Rushmore is the only criterion bluray I have. My first priority is to get all the Anderson stuff, then Ill dig into other stuff. I know they got some Altman and 12 Angry Men that I will want.

Yeah we will do next Sat.
So my library is having an this thing where people can pick one of their favorite literary quotes and do a drawing or painting based on it. I am going to do something but I am not sure what. One of my ideas was using the quote, "Go then, there are other worlds than these." from the Gunslinger and painting a bunch of characters from famous books that feature other worlds.
I like this quote a lot "Those people who recognize that imagination is reality's master, we call sages, and those who act upon it are called artists." but I'm not sure how I want to interpret it in a painting.
