I have always stood up for Ben Affleck. I think he is a quality actor. It's always seemed a shame to me that such a talented and clearly very smart person can be so hated by so many. I mean, the guy co-wrote Good Will Hunting, for christ sake and starred in and directed an Oscar winning best picture. I just don't understand the hatred for poor ol' Ben. Do people just not like his face?? I like when he plays the cool/tough guy like in Good Will Hunting and The Town.

Which Office episode should I start with tonight?
Have you ever watched them in order? If not, do that.
I hadn't seen the last season until recently. It had a lot of problems, but the finale was nicely done, I thought.
Who knew that someone would ever say, "that's what she said" and I would find it so sweet and poignant that it would bring a tear to my eye.
I have to admit that I actually cried once during the finale. I'm such a sap when it comes to movies, books and tv shows, but it takes a lot to make me cry otherwise.

For some reason the part in the finale that really got me I when Phyllis holds up that little doll that Stanley made and says, "it's me. It's me. " That was it for me. The tears rolled.
I freakin' love Stanley. I watched the episode today where Michael has Dwight pick the health insurance plan. When he is reading the fake illnesses and Stanley cracks up is one of my favorite Stanley moments.
I love all the characters. Michael is my favorite though. He is the greatest character in history to me.

A lot of people hate that Kevin became a big dumb caricature, but I think big dumb Kevin is one of the funniest and most charming aspects of the show. Big dumb Kevin is hilarious.
http://lugardemulher.com.br/wp/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/sogros12.gif
I like all the small characters. I think because they were exactly that. They never had to carry an episode. I especially liked the subtle work friend relationship Jim and Kevin had. Really noticeable the first three seasons.
I feel Kelly is really underrated too. She's a great character.
I agree. Although Kelly-Ryan grew tired for me the last couple of seasons. Especially didn't like where they went with Ryan's character.
Enough of the gushing you had to hate something. My hate list begins and ends with Nellie. She about ruined the last season and a half for me.

First the dude took an x-ray then told me the tooth was too frickin' huge and was growing in the wrong direction so he had to take it out and would remove it immediately since it wasn't infected. Then he gave me an anesthetic and then another anesthetic and then made an incision right next to the tooth and then starting drilling and cutting and yanking and my mom look horrified haha! Anyway, then he yanked it out and it was beautiful and covered in blood <3 Then he stitched up the hole where my tooth was. :)
I got up feeling drowsy and nauseous so they took me to the ER and gave me two injections in my back and had me lie down for a while and then my mommy took me for ice cream which I couldn't even really taste my mouth stayed numb for hours and hours and I fell asleep and then woke up yelling at everyone because the drugs had worn off and I was in pain <3 <3 <3

The difference with Kanye and MJ, Kanye is always standing for something when he is "being a jerk." The VMA thing was overboard, but he was standing for something he believed in. He did probably ruin her night, but it's not even like he was wrong. You could point out the Jimmy Kimmel thing, but he was standing up to people making fun of people who express their feelings. I understand that Kimmel wasn't intending any harm, but why is Kanye the jerk for responding? He even came on Jimmy's show and explained himself, poignantly I might add. Kanye West is certainly abrasive in his approach, and that will always turn people off, but he's often right when he is "being a jerk."

Just google "Michael Jordan is a jerk." There's a bunch of stories out there. The reason I think MJ is a bigger jerk than Kanye is because of how petty Jordan is. The story of MJ punching Kerr in the face, buddying up to Charles Barkley to mess with his head, MJ forcing Chuck Daly to play golf with him, basically ending Rodney McCray's career, ruining Kwame Brown's career, trying to take MTV VJ Lisa Kennedy's virginity as a dice wager, and when he was a jerk to Chamillionaire.
I think most of these are a lot worse, just because of how petty they seem to me. I like both guys, and the only reason I compared them before is because they are both icons. I thought one had a bad reputation he doesn't completely deserve, and I think MJ probably deserves to have his shortcomings at least noted. I do still love both dudes for what they do though.

Kanye West was a successful musician in the decade of the '00's
Michael Jordan will be remembered as the #1 athlete of the 20th century

Finally I can contribute something to the thread. I have my own dental horror story
I didn't take particularly good care of my teeth when I was a kid and had a real fear of the dentist so tried to avoid going as much as I could. So back when I was about 11 or 12 years old I had to get a couple of fillings as well as a couple of teeth taken out. I was knocked out for it but the place seemed really amateurish and shoddy (my mum was not happy at all) and during the operation they allowed me to swallow an incredible amount of blood. For the next few days I was physically sick on a number of occasions but none of it was vomit, it was just buckets of blood! As well as tasting/feeling horrible coming back up it is damn terrifying when you bring up that much blood. Was like a damn horror film
That certainly didn't do anything to ease my fears of the dentist and I didn't go again for like the next 8 years or something
I'm not a big enough boxing fan to comment on Muhammad Ali, many would agree with you. Mamy from my father's generation do not as well. Rope-a-dope, some didn't like that style. There is also this whole political side that comes into play, from both angles, when it shouldn't.
Jesse Owens proves what someone like me thinks. That athletes have simply gotten bigger, stronger, and faster. That today we ate watching superior athletes. Track is so quantifiable. Once a record gets beat, that guys the best. There is no disputing that. No denying what Owens did in that time transcended sports though.

I think the whole best athlete ever/C20th etc is just the power of conviction anyway, isn't it? It's tough enough to define the best in a certain sport currently. Let alone over different generations. But when you take different sports into account, I think it's down to who you think is best and what you rate. Personally, I think people such as Federer have just as much claim to any such title. How about Decathletes? Weight lifters? Strongmen? Marathon runners?
Jesse Owens proves what someone like me thinks. That athletes have simply gotten bigger, stronger, and faster. That today we ate watching superior athletes. Track is so quantifiable. We're watching more accomplished athletes. Better in terms of distance and time, but better? We'll never know. Given the technology, equipment, dieting, natural nutritional benefits in early life, opportunties etc. Would Owens be limited to the times and distances he achieved them? Certainly possible, but unlikely. Who knows? Maybe he'd be convinced to specialise and 'just' be a great runner or long jumper? Maybe he'd have become an American Football player and been a good, but not outstanding, running back or something?
Considering the numbers, I'm convinced that the greatest ever footballer hasn't even kicked a football. Same with Tennis, Basketball or any other sport.

I agree with all your points. All of this is certainly subjective. Like you said, it is hard enough sometimes to tie down who the best athlete in a particular sport is. Especially team sports. You start going across different sports, generations, etc. It gets muddled quick. It is amazing that we have the handful that we have that always get mentioned. Shows how amazing they truly are.

that first one was interesting HK. So you guys is it true? There's no back bacon only streaky? that don't seem right.- where would the rest of the pig go??
Marmite - I guess you can find that in specialist shops. Pints of beer - I'm sure we had pints when we were in New York. Dunno about sausages, or biscuits, but maybe that's just a word thing. I know you have Oreos so you do have packets of biscuits just like we do.
Tea is a terribly fraught thing for us Brits. We were in a trendy cafe the other day and we were given hot water in a cup with an enveloped teabag on the saucer awaiting dunking. wtf! and that's in this country! The tea isn't made with hot enough water to British taste in lots of countries.
I like tomato sauce in bacon butties but some people like HP sauce. One thing that drives me insane is when you make someone a bacon butty and they open it and pick all the fat out - that's so wrong
Yeah the tea thing might have been more of a brand or style thing. There is certainly no shortage of tea in our stores. Ordering it out is not a problem but you probably going to get something similar to what you described Christine.
I myself don't eat marmite, but my grandmother always had it at her house. She certainly wasn't getting it at a specialty shop.
I don't quite know about the bacon or sausage but I am pretty confident going to a butcher shop could solve that problem easily.

He didn't describe squash or cordial very well. It's not pure concentrated juice. Some of the cheap ones don't even have juice in them. It's a drink that's made with sugar syrup and fruit . I guess if you were making it at home it'd involve the zest of citrus fruits. It's steeping the fruit in sugar syrup. Then that is stored, then when you drink it it's prepared by using a little and watering it down. Like everything there's cheap and nasty ones then there's really nice ones.
Ribena is a famous blackcurrant cordial - have you come across that?

Sorry HK, I have to talk about this dream because it's by far the worst one I ever had. It started off with me driving, but I was driving some sort of tiny tractor. In my dream I fell asleep at the wheel. When I woke up I was still on the road, but lost.
I had been trying to go to Richmond Indiana (I was born there but never lived there and have no desire to go back) I saw no signs, but got off the next episode. The entire time I can't see the road hardly at all. My lights are really dim and my hair is in my face. I'm wearing a hoody and it keeps obscuring my vision no matter how many times I put it down.
I end up in this town and ask where I am. It's New Orleans. About this time I figure out that I'm dreaming. I scream and try to do all this stuff to wake myself up but can't.
I end up in this house still driving my tiny tractor. I see this guy taking a shower in the middle of the house and ask him how to get out. He starts laughing and tells me "Child, you know you never gettin' out. " but he's being friendly not sinister which somehow made it scarier.
All of a sudden these balloon strings wrap themselves around my arms and legs and I am floating. It occurs to me that I wrecked my car and I am having this dream because in real life I am dying. I start to panic and claw at myself trying to wake myself up.
Then the balloons float me over to this part of the house where it's all demonic and ghosty. This woman grabs my arm and smiles at me. Then she tells me that I better wake up if I don't want to burn
Somehow I float out of there and I keep begging everyone to wake me up because I'm dying and I have to wake up to live.
Finally I did.
I know it doesn't sound scary, but I really thought I was dying. I don't like being aware that you are dreaming. It's awful.

I am thinking this tractor has to do with Indiana (farm country / farm equipment). By driving it, you are connected to where you came from. Maybe you were wanting to get out of the tractor more than anything. "Child, you know you never gettin' out" -- you're never going to ditch the part of you that's... Indiana. You're never going to escape your past, that is. Not necessarily Indiana since you say you don't know it, but your past. Balloons make me think of childhood.

See. You don't wanna bring up your own dreams.
I fail to see how dreams are so boring. We spend HOURS asleep every night. They say you only dream a little bit each night, but I've heard that may not be true and I actually suspect it isn't. I think we dream a lot but forget a lot of it. There are some days I can't remember anything I dreamt. Then there are days I can remember a lot. I've noticed that if I'm awakened for some reason when I should be asleep, I'll recall A LOT about a dream, very vivid stuff.
Anyway, dreaming is like having to do drugs and hallucinate every night or something. I don't think they're not important. We may not have the tools to accurately explain everything about dreams, but I see no reason why we shouldn't probe them and what's going on in our minds. I believe they're a part of us. I think it's like we change the channel of our consciousness when we sleep. We become something else, we experience another part of ourselves. How strange that I can lay down and suddenly I have all these weird experiences that I believe are real and are really happening. Marilyn Manson, I believe it was, said this in his autobiography -- dreams are like time travel. So often, I visit the past in my dreams, and it's amazing because these visits are more real than if I just think about the past. Your mind recorded your history up there and you have your own time traveling machine when you dream. The brain is a time machine. Among other things.
That's not boring. Honeykid's brain is just programmed to feel bored by it. Apparently.

For you, it is. I've realized I'm dreaming in a dream before and I wasn't horrified. A lot of other people realize it, too, and they enjoy it. It often means you have a "lucid dream" where you feel like you're controlling your dream. I have done this a few times. For me, though, once I realize I'm dreaming, I usually wake up soon afterwards. I'd love to stick around and dream while knowing it's a dream, but I can't seem to stick around long. It's like my mind says, "Eh, you ruined it. I'm getting you out of here."

Totally understand this. There are times where I dread going to bed because I don't want to dream. You just never know what you're gonna get. Sometimes a dream can put you in a bad mood for the rest of the day.
I just tell myself it's a natural phenomenon and I have to do it. It's like death. We're all gonna have to die someday, too. Going to sleep is good practice for that. In a way, they're very similar. Both involve losing yourself. Not that I truly know what death is like, but that's how I imagine it might be -- letting go of yourself. At least if you're all atheist about it, maybe.

I think our dreams are a necessary and healthy psychological function. What you did in your dream was necessary for your mental health. I think -- and this is probably just still a theory about dreams -- but I think it's like a rejuvenation process. A growing process. So don't worry about the nightmares and what you may experience. It was just necessary for you last night. You will have better dreams again. In fact, last night I sort of had a nightmare myself. I felt really scared in my dream, which is something I haven't really experienced in a dream in awhile. Maybe it's Ebola. Maybe Ebola fears are messing with our psyches.

Maybe it was frightening because you're new to that kind of experience.

I fail to see how dreams are so boring. We spend HOURS asleep every night. They say you only dream a little bit each night, but I've heard that may not be true and I actually suspect it isn't. I've noticed that if I'm awakened for some reason when I should be asleep, I'll recall A LOT about a dream, very vivid stuff.
We spend hours of our lives at work, too. I don't want to talk about the ins and outs of that, either. Not unless I find your job particularly interesting, anyway, and, beyond the bullet points, most people don't bang on about their work because they know how dull it is for those not involved in it.
Now, if you want to talk about why people dream or how? That's a different discussion. I'm not hugely interested in that either, but it's not boring. We know we dream every night and we know that we rarely remember them. If you think you've had a dreamless night's sleep, you probably haven't. At least, not in terms of the brainwaves and patterns that can be observed during sleep.
Anyway, dreaming is like having to do drugs and hallucinate every night or something.
I don't feel it's anything like that at all.
I don't think they're not important.
I don't know that they're not. But I think mindlessly rabbiting on about them is boring. You don't, so have at it. After all, there's an entire thread devoted to it. ;)
Honeykid's brain is just programmed to feel bored by it. Apparently.
I don't think it's been programmed to. Well, not intentionally, anyway.

Since you are on the topic of dreaming.... if you had the perfect night of sleep, you would never remember your dreams. The only reason people remember them is because they are waking up.. maybe not fully aware of waking up but you are moving out of the deepest sleep (REM). Most people vividly remember the dreams is because of a frightening aspect of the dream that caused you to awake.. like mine the other night involved Tornadoes.. which I am not very fond of.... and yes... I could feel my heart beating fast which caused me to wake up.
Also, people with Sleep Apnea, will most likely remember dreams as well, since SA takes place during the time of REM.

We spend hours of our lives at work, too. I don't want to talk about the ins and outs of that, either. Not unless I find your job particularly interesting, anyway, and, beyond the bullet points, most people don't bang on about their work because they know how dull it is for those not involved in it.
I don't think of work and dreams as being very similar. I like dreams because they deal with the mind and how it works. I find all that stuff fascinating. Not everyone shares that passion, of course, but I do.
I don't feel it's anything like that at all.
Well, I'm sure it's not the same, but my point is -- we're forced to have these odd experiences where we're convinced we're living out scenarios that aren't real. Every night we must do this.
If you don't think about it too much, dreams and how they work won't really matter to you. But if you do stop and think about it... they are really strange. You can get into bed and suddenly you're living out a situation where you believe you're a pirate or something. And it's your BRAIN that's doing this. The brain that makes your day-to-day life feel normal and okay. You won't be awake and suddenly believe you're a pirate on a ship. But if you go asleep -- anything could happen. Anything.
Our lives are what our brain experiences. Dreams may not be real, but they can feel real. Temporarily. So if you have a really wild dream, it is like you really lived it in a way. For a very short time.
They're like movies. I can totally understand why movie fans would be into dreams. They're movies you can't rewatch, although you may see a similar movie again if you dream sort of the same thing again, as people do.
Dreaming can be a very life fulfilling experience. I think you could even be addicted to dreaming. You could treat it like sports. They could be something you really look forward to every night.
I don't know that they're not. But I think mindlessly rabbiting on about them is boring. You don't, so have at it. After all, there's an entire thread devoted to it. ;)
Well, we talk about them in here, too, so deal with it.

Disagree. A good dream can contribute to a perfect night of sleep.

Sorry Sexy.. but I disagree.... when I had my sleep apnea test done... this is some of the things the doctor and I talked about and if you ever took psychology, then you would know to... dreams are the inter brain's workings.... they are never actually meant to be remembered.... the fact we remember and they fade over time or we only remember certain aspects of them, is because we are awakened... out of a natural sleep (from REM to mid-sleep) and frightening and/or weird aspects of the dream... such as my astrophobia/lilapsophoia.
Again, this is part of Psychology... doubt me, check it out for yourself.

I took a psychology class in high school and all we studied was dreams. I knew this one dude who had a sleepwalking problem. He would get out of bed in the middle of the night, go to the kitchen and turn on the toaster and then just go back to bed. There was also a time when my stepbrother and I shared a room and I would sometimes wake up and find him under my bed. Sleepwalking is way scarier than any nightmare.

I have always found the workings of the inter brain interesting.... why people do what they do... if I could have the chance to ask three people in history why they performed the atrocities they did... I would... and they would be Donatien Alphonse François de Sade (the Marquis de Sade), Countess Elizabeth Báthory de Ecsed and Gaius Julius Ceasar Augustus Germanicus (Caligulia). To explore their brains would be fascinating and terrifying.
I used to sleep walk during my adolescent years. Used to have a lot of falling and wake up before you land dreams too. I rarely remember my dreams anymore. Since I have had kids, I don't think I go to sleep anymore, now I just pass out for a bit.

Godoggo your dream was interesting to read, it was very detailed. I'd say you have a creative mind to have dreamed all that. But I'm sure it was damn scary for you.
You know people have claimed to be able to interpret dreams for 1000s of years. I'm not sure about that.
I've always believed dreams are a way our brains experience things we would never really want to experience. It's like when we see a horror movie and we think, 'what would I do in that situation?" A dream is just a way to prep us for all sorts of unlikely and scary situations.
(yes, dreams can also have different functions too)

The first time we drove to Chicago.... we stopped at 2am and stayed in a motel in Coralville Iowa... and then we got up at 6am to finish driving into Chicago... that night we left Chicago and drove back home.... made it almost all the way... barely got any sleep that weekend.... unless it was sleeping in the car.....

From a physiological standpoint, yes, that could possibly be true. From a subjective standpoint, remembering your dreams could be part of a good night's sleep to you. I would rather remember my dreams than recall nothing. I can get frustrated if I don't remember much from my dreams for awhile.
