Allaby your thoughts if you have watched The Painted Bird?

My review: First, I will start with the positives. The cinematography is excellent. This is a beautifully filmed movie. I think the actors did a decent job with the material that they were given to work with.

However, there were several issues I had with the film. There isn't enough of a story here and there isn't much character development. We don't really get to know anyone. It feels like a bunch of bad stuff happening for the sake of bad stuff happening. The darkness, brutality and unpleasantness of the film weren't in service of the story or characters. It felt over the top and excessive and it didn't feel like a rewarding or worthwhile experience to me. The film is also much too long and drags on and on at times. It needed to be at least a half hour shorter. There was a lot that they could have (and should have) cut out. 5/10 is my rating.

SpelingError
11-14-24, 08:11 PM
SpelingError what were your thoughts on The Painted Bird? We were discussing how the HOF members were not into it.

I personally didn't enjoy it, but not for the same reasons as some of the other people in the Hall of Fame. My issue was mainly with the bland performance of the main actor which made the film feel very stagnant. It made it hard for me to buy his character arc in the second half and so much of the film felt cold and distant as a result. As a comparison, the child actor in Come and See, in addition to the make up on his face, was far more expressive.

The Zone of Interest is actually pretty tame. I'm pretty sure it doesn't have a single frame of violence. All the horrific content in the film occurs over the walls.

And people will focus on that.

Most biographies I see are those in music.. The rest are directors/actors. Stand-up comedians.

I was reading Willem Oltmans diaries but kinda forgot about them -- I have to split the original file from the Dutch archives, convert to PDF, split the file in two, then translate, which might be why I read something else. Especially 4,000 pages with so many files. I'd select certain years that were eventful in the world, or his life.
