Yep :p
I would be thankful to be at the top, but honestly I'm happy enough with people just saying they enjoy what I do. That's all I need. And I already got my Best Reviewer trophy, I'm good for now. ;)
No really, for someone who enjoys reviewing and the art of writing so as much as I do, of course I admire and appreciate people who do the same just as much. I love reading reviews myself and do it often on the forums and elsewhere... I just want to get some love for the various reviewers around here and for Optimus who came up this brilliant idea.
Optimus already said he saw like 4 or 5 different top spots on the lists he received at the beginning, which is really interesting!
Send in a list, Daniel!!!

I might do. I'll have to have a good look around the review section and check up on a few threads first though, I would feel bad leaving people out.

Yep, that's the hard part. I thought I had it all in my mind, but quickly realized I'd better read up on a few reviews - even by those I already knew were locked for my list.
It was a hard list to rank too, but I can't say I didn't take my time doing it. I took a nice long stroll down the reviewing section, up to multiple times, and read a few reviews by the same person until moving on to the next. I even re-read some old ones. It took time, but I think it was worth it.
I think I've hit a reviewer's block. :(

Decisions, decisions.
I have enough reward points on my Amazon Visa card to get a free movie. The question is which one?
I've narrowed it down to either Legend (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B019WMTWRS/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pd_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=2XER1E9J3YQXZ&coliid=I29LB57RK52X9B) or The Adventures of Prince Achmed (http://www.amazon.com/Adventures-Prince-Achmed-Lotte-Reiniger/dp/B005MY2J12/ref=sr_1_1?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1456419639&sr=1-1&keywords=the+adventures+of+prince+achmed).
I've not seen either movie before. I really want to see Legend because I love Tom Hardy and I really want to see Achmed for its historical significance. Which do I choose? Help!
Well, I vote for Prince Achmed, but I don't want to be responsible for your missing out on Tom Hardy times two. :)

Orbs are the best things ever, the one form of inpeneterable woo evidence. Doesn't matter how many times you personally replicate that exact effect they have in their photo it still could be Jesus or a deceased family member.
My Dad and brother just saw Deadpool. I went to Brooklyn because it was playing at the same time.
Deadpool must be short because they were finished by 9:20 and went home without me. My movie started at 7:50 and ended around 8:40.

Starting to think about the soundtrack for my revenge western. Finding some good songs for it, got some recurring themes. Going to be interesting and a bit odd.

You always got so many projects and ideas going around Swan, it's kinda funny to me.
Today: I'm doing a script for a revenge western and picks music themes
Tomorrow: I'm taking a law degree and doing something big with my life
The day after: I paint an abstract picture inspired by the current immigration crisis
The day after that: I'm becoming a world famous experimental chef, cooking swans as a delicacy.
:D love it
I know, I know. I know. But hey, at least I've got passion in my soul. Even if it's chaotic, meandering passion. :D

Twist: Swan already accomplished all the things you mentioned, all he has to do is write a revenge Western and his life will be complete.
I already wrote my revenge western. Well, the first draft, anyway. :D
Just started writing something new. I'm very proud of my revenge western, for a first script. However, my one own criticism is there's not enough me in it. I want my writing to be personal, express my inner humanity, because I think that is what will reach out to people. So with this, I did the same thing as the western - sat with a blank page, and just belted out a scene. But the one difference this time was, I made an effort to express myself a bit more, expose my own humanity through the story a little bit. Not sure how successful it is, but anyway it's step in the right direction I think. A bit of progress for Swan the Screenwriter.

Then offering people a chance to buy it uncensored. Maybe with an added sexy scene or something. Hmmmmm.

it would be nice to make some money from a short film for once.
It seems to make sense like this.. you've got to give the people something they can't find on just any old corner of the internet. And people are more willing to pay for nudity than anything else.
it's definitely more mainstream now to have nudity with game of thrones..
Just need to make sure I maintain my artistic integrity and don't turn it into smut.

Foster how's your stuff going?
I started something last night. I actually had something the night before, spent that whole night planning out this story that would be really personal for me. But.... I dunno.... when I plan stuff out I just get too precious and don't write. And, I don't really know where to start. So I started writing something new and I'm finding I'm much better starting out with really vague/blurry ideas in my head and not really thinking too hard about them. Because then I have a kind of open freedom to take the story in new directions. I will say what I'm writing is pure grime and grunge, and I'm going to include kinbaku to the story.
I gave this whole erotic angle some serious thought today and here is my decision.
if i could get 10,000,000 views and 10% of them would buy it for $5 uncensored that's $5,000,000
That would fund a legitimate feature length film.. ****! For that much money i'd pull down her pants and spank her bare ass on camera
in reality it will probably get 2,000 views and if 10% bought it for $5 thats only $1,000. can't do much of anything with $1,000
the odds are that very few people will end up watching this and it's definitely not worth degrading myself for.
Maybe I will still do some basic nudity out of curiosity if the business model works. maaaaaybe.

I plan things but I write a high level plot outline at first.
could be a single page that explains the story, then i go from there.
Plotting is cool if it works for ya, I just can't do it myself I don't think. It's not in my blood.
i was out filming tonight. got naked and changed into magic panties on a public elevator.
and did the introductory dialogue with my cop partner inside of our squad car.. which is actually a miniature.

Cool that you're actually out filming stuff. I'll be doing the same... one day!
Plotting is cool if it works for ya, I just can't do it myself I don't think. It's not in my blood.
I find that plotting lets me get swept up in the outline more easily.
when I try to write stuff I can get bogged down in the mechanics of pacing.
just thinking about it in my head lets me go off leash and roam free creatively.
Cool that you're actually out filming stuff. I'll be doing the same... one day!
The key is to write something really short.
If you write a one page story with only a couple characters you can get it filmed and edited and released in no time.
My brain just doesn't work that way. My brain is a meandering, scattered mess. Plotting actually is great, it's a great way to flesh everything out and develop a vision... but then I just get too precious about it. And ultimately, I think after I plot too heavily I feel too confined to that outline. I prefer letting my stories play out as I write them.

That's probably what I'll do, yeah. Right now I'm just working on developing as a writer though. I've got some time, I'm a youngin'.

It'll help your writing to see it brought to screen.
My first film was a disaster. Partly because my I didn't audition and my cast wasn't funny.
You need funny people in comedy.. it scares he hell out of me. How flat something can play out on screen.
It definitely influenced my writing and I try hard never to have anything so bad happen again.
very next thing i wrote was a life or death situation. it was much more exciting.
Good advice. Seems like something beginners haven't learned, but when you learn it is common sense.
Mmmm I am loving my new script so much more than the first. It's like if Naked was written by David Lynch after watching Antichrist, and while he wrote it he listened to a lot of Pig Destroyer and Death Grips.
You know... if it ever becomes something and I pitch it, that's what I'm going to say. Verbatim.

Just got back home after working late. So I missed the Oscars chat. :/ But here are a few of my thoughts.
Glad Leo won his Oscar. Well deserved and a long time coming.
Glad to see Mad Max: Fury Road win a bunch of technical awards.
Very sad to see George Miller not get the Oscar for Best Director and Fury Road not winning for Best picture. Though I knew both were wild cards.
Very happy Inside Out won for best animated feature.
Stallone and Hardy BOTH not winning for best supporting threw me for a loop.
I also ready Chris Rock's opening monologue for the Oscars. I thought it was hilarious. As was the Stacy Dash cameo. That is why he is a comic legend.
Derek Vinyard
02-29-16, 03:42 AM
Hardy should've win the oscar for best supporting actor but I'm pretty sure someday he will.
The only two i cared about that won were Ennio and Brie. The only one i cared about that lost was Anomalisa.
The only two i cared about that won were Ennio and Brie. The only one i cared about that lost was Anomalisa.
Replace Brie with Vikander, and add that I was happy to see Ex Machina get effects, and we're in total agreement!
still have an internal dialogue going on about my psychological horror.
I try not to get swept up in hubris, I try to remain realistic no matter how much I love a script.
But I think I need to stay open to the possibility of success.
Part of me is saying.. be optimistic. Maybe it'll be great and a lot of people will watch it and share it on their social media. Pick an actress that will do nudity so you can charge for an uncensored version of the film.
Of course even finding a girl that is okay with nudity and is also a good actress is a big hurdle in itself.. but i would offer partnership in profit instead of a flat rate.
That and an excellent script might bring someone out of the mayhem. But then do I need additional footage or is just some uncensored t&a enough to get people to pay.
Gonna watch something good tonight I CAN FEEL IT
Partly because my choices right now are all faves.

Missed the Oscars, read the highlights.
I'm so happy with where my new script is going. Really unleashing my inner Lynch with this one. So much fun.
I was inspired with a new concept and I've begun plotting for my first feature length script.
Indie Science fiction!
If that does well I'd like to do a large budget sci fi epic.. like 80 or 100 million budget.
This means I have two scripts in the queue that need writing.
That's awesome man. I always liked indie sci-fi myself.
One of the worst things about having some psychotic illness, is the f*cking dreams. You could call them nightmares, but... they're different. More intense and frightening, more real. When I have them I feel like I'm being tortured to death.

My attention was caught by an object in the sky. It was like a ball of fire; bright orange with a tinge of pink and twinkling like a star. It careered across the sky at an incredible pace, faster than any plane or anything could possibly go. And then about 10 seconds later, from behind a building an identical object appeared and followed the same path. Then a third. Then a fourth. Then it was clear for a few minutes before a fifth object, and then two more almost side by side. And then a few minutes later one final object. By the time of the last few the route we were taking had taken us underneath their path and it was completely silent, not a trace of any engine noise.
Now I'm sure there is some kind of logical explanation but until I hear it it was definitely aliens!

Neat little UFO story - several years ago I saw something in the sky while taking the garbage out.
It was a triangular looking pinpoint of light in the sky, like a star, but slightly larger with a shape to it (it very much resembled the arrow head end of a computer's cursor pointer).
It was also surrounded by a circular haze. It definitely was not a plane's lights. The night was clear with no clouds.
I went inside to get my binocs, but when I came out the point of light was gone and the circle of haze had grown larger but fainter - it was dissipating. I wracked my brain trying to think of what this could be, but nothing made sense. (I also uneasily waited for a possible explosion, mushroom cloud or alien invasion.)
I wrote about it on an eBay discussion board. Soon, another person responded and wrote to say they saw the same thing. Then they posted a newspaper article and our UFO became an IFO. It was a NASA rocket launched from a military base in Virginia (I didn't know NASA used bases in VA.) and people in several states along the east coast saw the final stages of this rocket and its contents.

You probably liked those -- they don't make any sound, right? They're silent. I know how you hate noise.
That's correct. I could feel the chop of the rotors in my chest, but they didn't make a sound - swear to God! I remember checking myself - I could hear crickets & bugs & cars out on the roadway, but not what was creating this pulse vibration in my chest.
They flew over the place I was living at the time (sometime in the 90's) at dusk.
As said, I felt them, I saw them, but didn't hear them - this defied logic.
They were flying low. From my perspective, they were right over the house - a few hundred feet above the ground. They appeared to me as military design - very sleek, solid black, with no lights whatsoever (aircraft are not permitted to fly without lights).
And lastly, they flew in a perfect spearhead formation - there were three with the middle one taking the lead. What I couldn't get over was how tight the formation was, as if they were held together by invisible tethers, and they were so close to each other, which seemed insane for vehicles with spinning rotors (one wrong move and BOOM!) I couldn't figure out why helicopters would or could fly that close together.
I'm not saying what they were, who they belonged to, what their purpose was, all I'm saying is there are black helicopters, I saw three of them, and they don't make a sound (but you can feel the pulse of their rotors in the center of your being greater than any other helicopter).

You need a selfless heroic guy. You need a beautiful girl who starts to see the heroism in the guy. You need a self-centered jerk character who's only concerned with his own survival. You need the pessimistic retired cop who deep down is really alright (and his former prostitute wife). You need the know-it-all guy who thinks his ideas are better than everyone else. You need the goodhearted blue-collar type guy who helps the scared characters (but ultimately dies). And you need a priest or two.

Ahh, that's good, but he'll need some diversity in his cast or he will be apologizing like the director of Gods of Egypt just did. So let me diversify this for you;)
You need a selfless heroic guy (white actor is OK here, but not too white)
You need a beautiful girl who starts to see the heroism in the guy. (should be an ethnic mix, Asian would be nice)
You need a self-centered jerk character who's only concerned with his own survival. (Must be played by a white guy, performable Alex Baldwin.)
You need the pessimistic retired cop who deep down is really alright (should be an older respected black actor) and his former prostitute wife, (she needs to be trashy white).
You need the know-it-all guy who thinks his ideas are better than everyone else. (This one is up for grabs)
You need the goodhearted blue-collar type guy who helps the scared characters but ultimately dies (should be another black actor). And you need a priest or two (one of the priest needs to be gay.)

To be fair it was 24 hours after that incident with the meteor that made the news. I had heard something on the news about the meteor and the were also talking about an asteroid that was going to miss Earth but may hit satellites in orbit around the planet. I had picked it up as being later that day (so last night) so I thought that's what had probably happened and I was either seeing bits of the asteroid burning up in the atmosphere or debris from satellites. However when I looked online I had picked it up wrong and the asteroid isn't expected until

Yeah I was certainly telling the truth. Was just having a little fun with my 'retraction'. What I saw certainly didn't sound like the descriptions from the previous evening. As I said it was eight separate objects I saw as opposed to a flash of light or a single object which the previous night's reports were about. And they certainly weren't planes, helicopters, balloons, Chinese lanterns or birds. So what they were I don't know.
It's also not the first time I've seen a UFO. And by UFO I don't automatically mean an alien spacecraft. I just mean simply something I could not identify. Back when I was about 12 I saw two objects in the sky that glowed red with the occasional flash of blue light. They appeared to be chasing each other, moving around the sky in zig-zags and in a haphazard manner; certainly movement that no known air craft is capable of. Every so often they'd have a burst of incredible speed, and then all of a sudden they zoomed off behind some flats and disappeared. And then a few years back I saw an orange object racing across the sky. I will say there's a chance that one could have been one of those Chinese lanterns but it was certainly going a lot faster and was much larger than any I've seen.

This is my 7,777th post.
This is my first post. Hi everyone!
Welcome to the forums young lady. :3
I hope you enjoy your stay. Love your top 10 by the way.
El Topo was one of the first movies that I watched from recommendations on this site. I think it was JJ who recommended it to me first, but a couple more people chimed in right away. It was my first Jodorowski.
Have you seen Fando and Lis by the way? It's not quite as polished as El Topo, but I like it a little bit more.
Yeah, I like that one. It's kinda Jodorowsky finding his artistic voice, but it's still a good watch.
I just loved the love/hate relationship, the vulnerability of Lis, and the black and white film.
So Swan, did you watch Gozu yet?
Not yet. I might tomorrow.
I'm interested to hear what you think about it.
I was a bit disappointed when I re-watched Audition. I noticed some flaws that I hadn't noticed when I first watched it years ago. I wonder how I'll feel when I re-watch Ichi the Killer. I was really disappointed with Visitor Q. And I was appalled by Izo. 13 Assassins was decent. But I do love Shinjuku Triad Society as you already know from my top 100.
His quality is all over the place, so I'm very wary of his movies now. That's the main reason why I'm eager to hear what you'll have to say about it when you watch it.
Yeah he's a bit of an odd director. I just love how he portrays violence. Hard to put into words but, he's proof that there can be different artistic styles regarding violence. I guess that goes without saying, but still. For example, Tarantino violence is vastly different than Miike violence.
Granted I'm no expert on violent cinema. It's something I need to explore more.
I did feel the same way when I first discovered him. But also, Audition and Ichi the Killer were the first two of his movies I saw. So on that basis alone I thought he was a master. But I don't like his use of CGI, even in Ichi the Killer when a body gets sliced in half and slides apart it just looks extremely fake, although most of the violence in Ichi the Killer was really brutal and awesome there were other really fake looking parts too. I do prefer violence that is more realistic and unsettling. Angst has raised the bar higher than anything else I've seen in terms of how realistic it was and how sick it made me feel, but also how exciting it was and how much I enjoyed it. But I wouldn't say that's the first time the bar was raised for me since I discovered Miike.
I often find myself imagining how violent scenes could be improved, or just imagining what I'd do if I was a film maker or author. I've done a considerable amount of roleplaying and story writing. I once wrote a paragraph death scene that I then read to my dad, and he was extremely uncomfortable while I read it and didn't like it at all. But Angst was the first thing I've seen that matched my imagination in terms of how I thought violence should be portrayed.
Actually, the next disturbingly violent movie on my to-watch list is A Serbian Film. My new video store has an extended cut that was never released in North America. It contains a few minutes that were cut out of the more extreme cut. So, there's like a theatrical cut, a too brutal for theaters cut, and a too brutal for North America cut. :D I can't wait.
Salo is another movie that, while it wasn't as bloody and gory as Ichi the Killer, it was much more realistic and uncomfortable to watch.
Looking forward to seeing Angst. Minio recommended it to me the other day, and then you posted your review which made me even more excited.
For me, I'm good with stylized or realistic violence. I think it depends on the film and what tone it's trying to set. That said, I tend to go for more stylistic cinema in general.
I need to see more Jorg Buttgereit films. Only seen Nekromantik, but I was reading about some of his other films and he seems amazingly creative in a disturbing way.
Oh yeah, I really need to see Nekromantik too.
I love stylised movies too. I think I tend to look at them as creative and artistic though. Realistic violence makes me feel it more. I'm interested in a film maker who does stylised violence in a creative and interesting way (like Tarantino or Jodorowski), and the more art there is in it the better. I feel put off though by violence that seems unrealistic due to a lack of knowledge or care from the film makers, like your typical action movie for example. There has to be some deeper meaning to the style of the violence if it isn't realistic. That's how I feel about it.
Nekromantic did absolutely nothing for me, but I think you'll enjoy some of it Zotis.

Well the character is Kakihara, but yes it's from the film Ichi the Killer. :)
You can tell he's the leader because he has the blondest hair. That's how it works in Yakuza gangs.
Honestly it's been a while, I remember it visually but storywise it's a bit more blurry. My memory of Kakihara was him being a bit more of a lonewolf, but I need to see it again.
He pretty much assumes command of their Yakuza family when the boss gets killed, but I think he's a bit of a lone wolf at the same time. It's more like the gang follows him than he leads them, as they look to avenge their boss.
Edit: He's just so proactive and driven, but I was kinda joking when I said he was the leader.
