I know there's nothing that can be done for a broken toe, except maybe tape it to the toe next to it and try to stay off of it, but have you seen a doc about something for the pain?

I haven't seen a doc, but I just took some Tylenol and it's starting to kick in a bit. My friend and I are taking it easy today, so I'll be off my feet for most of it.

So a few years ago Apple gave us a free album on iTunes! That U2 one. I'm not personally a fan of the band. I don't use iTunes anymore (except for my own work), haven't for a long time. But recently I decided to hide all the music I have purchased on there. Including that U2 album. For some reason though Apple insists on unhiding it constantly. Stupid! I guess there's a page you can request to remove it from your account, but it's down for technical difficulties.
Man, first world problems are just the worst!

Damn it feels good to be making music again. Got all my equipment out (aside from my MS-20 which I have no room for).
If I had to self-assess after these last four-ish years (the start of which being when I picked up Ableton and started making music regularly), I've most improved at mixing and mastering, despite having plenty more to learn there. Funnily enough, as much as I like plenty of really well-mixed stuff, I'm probably more drawn to lo-fi, at least in terms of what I want to do. So I'd like to find a balance there.
With that in mind, so many areas I want to improve in. My biggest challenge, in my opinion, is with structure. I have always been pretty repetitive with my songs. I got to the point where I could combat that decently, but then I would overdo the intricacies. I'd like my music to flow naturally and organically. That's always been a struggle for some reason.
I'd also like to improve at playing piano. I reckon I'm not bad at guitar, but interestingly, even though it's the instrument I learned at a young age, I don't know if it's the right instrument for me. In any case, piano is great for learning theory, which is something I want to learn more of. My knowledge of it is okay, but not great. I can decipher basic to intermediate sheet music, but can't sight-read.
Down the line, I'd like to get a drum set and learn more of that stuff. I find buying a drum kit properly a bit of a confusing endeavor though, so I'd have to figure that out.

Well, the one place I'd definitely be happy in is Ireland, but that's not really feasible. Spain's too hot...The Czech Repulic is nice, but it might take me longer than usual to pick up the language.

Man, you should read the source material! The movie's in my Top 100 for sure, but the comics ruled my life for a while; it had that much of an impact. Great characters, action sequences, and super-quotable lines. They also explain some plot inconsistencies found in the film.

I interviewed at a new place that is $30K a year, 40 minutes a day commute, non-physical in a clean office setting, working from home every Friday, paid parking, small start-up company with room for advancement.***
Money is tight, but we're making it work. I feel like if I take this new job, it'll be a big lifestyle change, but is it worth the pay cut? I know everything in life isn't about money, but we're just getting by, this might make things a bit more difficult. Yet on the flip side, I won't be spending as much money on the car maintenance and gas. The wear and tear on the car and my mind will be virtually zero now.

Your time is worth something. Plus, if you think that you'll be happier at the new job, then maybe you should strongly consider it.
However, keep in mind that it's a "small start-up company", so it has no track record for success. Do you have a fall-back plan if the small company fails?
Basically, it sounds like you'll be happier if you take the new job, so you have to figure out if you can afford to take that size pay cut, and if you think the job is secure for the long-term.

My wife use to have a 3 hour commute and she put so many miles on her car that she had to buy another car every few years, and gas cost was extremely high too.
Do the math, figure out over a period of x number of years at your current job how many extra miles you'll drive and how often you'll have to replace the car, buy tires, oil changes, gas, and mechanical repairs. When you factor those cost, compared to a close by job, the difference in pay cut might not be as great as difference as it initially seems.

TheUsualSuspect I agree with pretty much everything CR and gbg have said.
Take a look at the numbers, see if you can really take the pay cut and estimate how much wiggle room you'll have if things change. This change will bring a lot more time with your family/for yourself and the easier days you have will make a big difference on pretty much everything, too.
I'm someone who needs security, but I'm also someone who values their free time a hell of a lot more than any employer ever will and the commute you're talking about alone would be enough for me to seriously consider any move.

For me, it would all be about how promising the start-up company is and how much growth potential I'd have (both money-wise and function-wise). Do you have a clear view on that?
All in all, a job being less physically demanding and MUCH closer by is always worth a significant pay cut, in my opinion. It also seems like you'd be happier with your new job. From the information I have now, I'd go for the new adventure!

Follow the Mario Kart. 3 hour commute?! I'd be "screaming like banshee" with that drive everyday. 49k a year isn't bad money for us commonfolk, and 30k is a bit less...but life is much too short to be miserable (as I ready myself for another 70 hr workweek in a dirty warehouse)....what's the wife think if I can ask?

- Women and children first. Whatever makes their life better.
- Are you a star where you are at now? or are you a guy that just shows up?
Do you have a belief that you can be a star at the new opportunity? How do you know?
Have you won anything in negotiating the new job? A higher wage than offered, better benefits, or maybe scheduling perks? If not, that can be an early indicator of the employer's perception of you. If you have, that is a position of power that can create a cascading effect on your employment.
Summation: Who wants TUS more?
- How do you feel after work at the current job? Are you happy the day is over or are you stressed and carrying the day's baggage home. Don't underestimate the value of a commute as personal time to clear your head and gather your thoughts and be the best dad you can be for the time you have with your family.
- You didn't mention your current vehicle (mpg, current condition) and whether you are a fix it when it breaks or you are proactive about maintenance. Cars are gonna cost money and if you budget for any issues, wear and tear is the least of your considerations in this process.
My background is coming from working for one of the world's largest retailers, one of the largest U.S. manufacturers in home improvement items, one of the most well-known nutraceutical manufacturers in the world and another national brand.

People definitely undervalue all those intangibles you're talking about. I would absolutely make less if my commute and day-to-day life were easier as a result. That stuff adds up. But the thing you said about just getting by is the primary argument against switching, I think. I dunno if it's possible to get that extra wiggle room or not, if you're already tracking spending and all that, or if it's totally unavoidable. I will say that if any creative budgeting or changes makes that lower salary plausible, the quality-of-life stuff definitely matters.

I think the clubs are just a place you click for your "one stop" on that director. The discussions, latest reviews, everything is there when you click on it. Try rejoining a couple - it might keep better tabs on discussion subjects than the search function (which sometimes yields no results).

I really like SC. He's always tried to make this place fun. Some people were so disrespectful and unsympathetic towards him. It really hurts to see this.

How is everyone? I think a lot has happened since I last posted, although I can't remember when that was. I've had a new job for 6 months now, still doing Web Design, well more Web Development actually. I passed my driving test and bought a car a few weeks ago now too.

When I was growing up... Sears and Roebucks used to have a catalog called "Wish Book". It was the catalog everyone ordered out of for Christmas.
The catalogs we ordered out of were Consumers Distributing (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Consumers_Distributing) and Service Merchandise (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Service_Merchandise). Their prices were usually very good, but I hated ordering from them because I couldn't see most of the items before ordering them. They both had small "showroom" stores where some of the items were on display, but there were a lot more items that were "catalog only" items.

I'd be interested to post pictures of egg nog, sweaters and newly acquired blu rays while y'all are chewing the fat on horrors. Might be cool.
