My internet is on the verge of driving me into a homicidal rage. It’s always been slow, but it’s gotten a thousand times worse lately. Plus it keeps randomly dropping my connection. I’ve tried every troubleshooting tip available, but nothing works. Unless the problem magically corrects itself, don’t expect to see me around too much for the foreseeable future.
I’ll figure something out, but it might take awhile. I’m going to call around this week to see if anything has changed since first moving here a few months ago. Hopefully my options are no longer as limited and I can get something much faster and more reliable than dial-up.
My God... do you drive a Ford Model T as well?

When I heard from Orson Welles and Pauline Kael this was their favorite movie, I had to watch it. I also think it's overrated. War is fickle.
The film has horrible lighting that it's so hard to read the subtitles. Yellow was used during those times.
No one should ever feel pressured to like or dislike anything. The only thing we are entitled to is something to believe in. Having said that, I feel pressured to watch this again, to be objective, but it's going to be a while, and it won't be the VHS I got from the library...

Hard to follow this, but I think you mean to say the old, public domain prints are faded and it interferes with the reading of the white subtitles. Yellow subtitles are a relatively-new invention (25 or so years) used to make them clearer on white backgrounds of B&W films. Of course, Grand Illusion's lighting is impeccable on a restored print.

I'd say Melville uses it more
Wanna recommend a couple of his films?
I would say FW Murnau uses it most. ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) :D
Would you guys say Bergman uses silence in his movies more than most?
Depends. Compared to say Hollywood or Japan then yes. Compared to the rest of the world then perhaps no.
He uses it more than Farhadi, Kechiche, Dreyer, Nichols, Greenaway, Kiarostami, Mikhalkov, Cassavetes, Zhang, Linklater, Kurosawa, etc.
He uses it about the same as Ozu, Angelopoulos, Fellini, Haneke, Wenders, Kobayashi, Kubrick, Koreeda, etc.
He uses it less than Tarr, Hou, Kitano, Antonioni, Erice, Iwai, Wong, Melville, etc.
It's kind of a how long is a piece of string question. Some of his films are very dialogue driven whilst others are less so IMO.
I was going to mention Antonioni. Didn't think of Tarr.
BlueLion

9 for 16 yesterday in the bracket pickem. 90th place out of 138 in a pool I'm in.
Hoping for better luck today.
The thing that kills me is if you picked all favorites, you would have gotten 12 yesterday. I picked upsets, but they were the wrong ones, so the three upsets that happened combined with the three I picked that didn't happen resulted in six wrong. I knew there would be three or four.
I picked Eastern Washington, SF Austin, and Purdue. That Purdue game was in the bag.
I had LSU too and they blew that game away.
I think I was about the same as you. The Iowa State one was the one that hurt me the most going forward. I am just glad UNC survived because they are one of my final four teams. Picking Ohio State and UCLA saved my day...somewhat.

In the past, I've tried to get into college... The 35 second shot clock is way too long. For the first 25, no one is hardly moving, just moving the ball around while fans are jumping.
It's also hard to follow a team when after one year, the best players leave for the NBA. In fact, it's become a handicap to stay 4 years...
My favorite ESPN 30 for 30 docs have been The Fab Five and I hate Christian Laettner - really great stuff.

I dont think I could ever do a top 25, 50 or 100 films.. there are so many films I have seen and its hard to say which is better than the others.... there are some that I consider top notch films but there are thousands I could recommend to others.... but would those be considered my top films as well? Yeah I enjoyed them enough to suggest.. but there are very very few films I can watch over and over..and since I watch film from every era and from pretty much any country.. that would be extremely hard..

I agree the teams change too much now. I disagree about it being a slower game though. Kids usually like to push. Plus there are not as many big men to bog down the offenses. That and the shorter 3 line make guard play very important, and I love good guard play.

It doesn't have a conventional plot. It employs a multi-strand narrative from 3 different eras and links together. The film mainly covers depression and sexuality.

When I read the "Routine" thread a few weeks ago, I notice a lot of people don't sleep much. I've had a string of 8-10 hours for over a week, the best in my life, so I want to share how. When I was in Hawaii, as I got into my hostel, I noticed a guy meditating, and we became fast friends, and we talked about meditation, etc.. It takes a lot of discipline, so I did something different, a variation, trying not to move a muscle, but with my headphones on, concentrating on the music.
A little more than a week ago, after I came home physical therapy, I laid down on my bed, not moving a muscle, and within 10 minutes, I felt a certain taste in my mouth, so rested, like my buds were enhanced - I have this feeling if I take a nap, which is extremely rare. And I felt so relaxed, and this is what I've been doing when I go to bed, but also when I wake up during the night to take a leak.

Fingers crossed that Godog's okay. :(
I may be scarce for awhile here really soon. My work schedule is about to become insane again. A little over a month ago, our last p.o.s. employee quit and the boss hired the first person who applied. Well that person has proved herself to be completely worthless (calling in sick all the time, slacking on her duties and messing things up when she is here). And yesterday she tendered her resignation via fax. So yeah... pretty sure I'm going to be kissing my days off goodbye for a little while. Again.
F**k.

Ah, I just thought of something! The only thing that's changed recently is Daylight Savings Time.
I'll bet anything anyone having this problem has DST turned off in their profile (or something). You can check your settings about 3/4ths of the way down the page here:

I don't know where all you guys live offhand, so I don't know if you have the same DST settings we do (if any), for example. So all I can say is that it's very likely something with the time zones/DST settings.
So, without quizzing you all on the particulars of your location AND settings, the best thing you can do is to flip that switch whichever way it isn't and/or tweak your time zone to see if that makes things line up.
I never touch this system, so if a few of you are just recently having problems, it pretty much has to be related to DST.

I doubt it has anything to do with DST because it's not happening on all of the threads. It's only happening on some of them. And a couple of threads were having the same problem last week, but they seemed to have fixed themselves, then different threads started having the same problem.
When I click on "New Posts" at the top of the page to get the list of new posts, then I click on the little arrow at the left of the thread title, it goes to a specific post, not the first unread post.
But after I open the thread, I can hit "Home" to get to the top of the page, and then click on "First Unread" in the upper right corner, and it will go to the first unread post.
And if it helps, I'm in New York, I use a desktop computer, (not a tablet or smartphone), and I'm using the newest version of Firefox.

Without getting into lots of boring programmer stuff, there are lots of possible explanations for why you'd see it in some places rather than others, and the only way to rule them all out would be to trace everything you did step by step. On the other hand, DST just happened and I literally never touch the code responsible for the unread links.
Anyway, if you guys wanna debug this, I'll be glad to help, but this is the first thing I would/will ask you to fiddle with.
But after I open the thread, I can hit "Home" to get to the top of the page, and then click on "First Unread" in the upper right corner, and it will go to the first unread post.
I think this might be a pretty big clue into what's going on. The system marks things read on a per-visit basis (IE: 15 minutes of inactivity), so if you leave the New Posts page open, read something, then click the link again without refreshing or leaving or anything, that might be why.

I sent Yoda a PM with some examples of the threads that are having this problem, and the posts where these threads are opening up. Hopefully that will help.
If anyone else is having this problem, you might want to either PM Yoda, or just mention it here so he doesn't get bombarded with PMs. At least that will give him an idea about how widespread this problem is, rather than thinking that it's just a few people.
Yeah, you guys don't need to convince me of that. If a few of you are having a problem, then it's very unlikely to be related to one person's computer.
On the other hand, given the coincidental timing and nature of the problem, it's also very unlikely there's an actual honest-to-God bug here. We've had the same system for a decade and you guys aren't the first to mention things like this. But every single time in the past it's been traced to some misaligned setting and/or links being clicked without pages being refreshed, or something similar. So if ya'll wanna get to the bottom of this, I'm with you, but that's where we'd wanna start looking. :)

I don't know if this is related BUT just yesterday I was posting at MoFo when my browser (firefox) started acting weird and then locked up. I had to start my computer in safe mode, do a system restore and then scanned with Malawarebytes... it found a PUP an unwanted browser hi-jacker. The only other tab that was open was to google, so it might have came from something uploaded here or at google.

I almost never leave the "New Posts" page open, unless I haven't been on for a few hours, and there are several hours of threads that have been updated.
I usually leave the home page open in the background, and then I click on the "New Posts" page when I'm ready. Then I open each thread in a new tab, and close the "New Posts" page. Then I read each thread one by one, and close the tab for that thread after I've either read it or replied to it.
Also, the threads seem to open to a post that's a day or two old, not just an hour or less.
I'll go into my settings page and reset it and see if that helps.

If you have malware it won't necessarily be related to whatever site you have open when it causes problems. It could be from any place you visited before.

I reset everything in my settings, (except the private messages section), saved my settings, went to the home page, then went back in and reset my settings, saved them, and tried again starting with the "New Posts" page, but I'm still having the same problem.
FYI, this should be obvious but just in case: I don't mind bug reports. I want them! If there are bugs I desperately want to know about them. So if I seem dismissive, I promise, I'm not. :) I'm just playing the odds based on past experience and the like.

What do you mean by "reset"? If you mean the "Reset Fields" button on the bottom, that doesn't restore them to the defaults--it restores them to the state they were in when you loaded the page.

Was it Ad something?? This has happened about 10 times in the last few months, and had to do system restores.. Now, I just go to "Uninstall Programs" and if that doesn't work (sometimes you'll hit delete, and it won't do anything), go to the C: Folder (the one I use is /x86) find it, delete the whole thing, then Uninstall, and it will say "Cannot be found" and will go away....
Also if you go to Add-Ons, you'll see "Coupon" and/or other junk.

Did you try all three--automatically on, always on, and always off? Might be necessary to do the whole Mark Forums Read thing after each, tedious though that is. Worst thing that can happen is a false negative.
Beyond that: which combination of settings produces the correct times on the posts themselves?

I tried all three settings, and I used the "Mark Forums Read" between changing settings, but it didn't work for any of them.
The only setting that was wrong on the last post times was the DST OFF setting, which was only wrong on the main page, in the "Now Playing" box. The times were correct in the "New Posts" page.

I think we're back on the original HoF schedule that you posted, but you may want to repost it again to make sure that everyone is on the same page. Also Mistique sounded confused about the Musical HoF, so you may want to verify about that.
