I just want to applaud this post. As a rap fan, I appreciate everything going on here. Obviously the homonyms (beard, beer, bear) are good, but what pushes this over the top is the double meanings of some of the words there. Beard and bear are both terms used in the gay community, and this makes this post clever. I approve of this post.
EDIT: and the internal rhyming is a nice touch. Wear, beard, beer, bear. Homonyms combined with "wear."

It took me just a few minutes. Just to see how the sections were classified with that judge the organization and then see how people respond to each other to judge if the people are nice or what. The moment I saw a few members that have been here for over 7 years and still active I made my account.
But before I found this forum I went on looking for many others that simply were awful, not to mention a koreanpop one, I would've ended up traumatized if I didn't find this one, and all because I wasn't looking for a specific forums but just forums in general. Never again..

The other forums I joined that were movie related were a bit hostile. There's always that one person that if you dont get along with them... the rest of the "sheep" tend to follow their lead. One movie forum I joined, the moderator was jealous of my movie knowledge, so he made it a living hell for me to be there. They had dedicated a section of short films and such I had posted and once I left, he merged my postings into his dedicated section. The two owners really liked me (or so they said) but would never back me up on anything. The other forums I belonged to were "Historium" (I love history!) and "Poets of the Fall"'s forum (A Finnish Rock Band).

Miss Vicky, if you lived in a football town all your life you would understand. Green Bay IS football.
I still don't think I would understand it or care about football. It's a game. That's all it is. A game that none of these crazy people are actually playing. Unless they've put bets on it, they have no real personal investment in the outcome. It's ridiculous how obsessed people get with this kind of thing. People even get into physical fights and sometimes even get killed because of disagreements about sports. It's absurd.

I'm pretty sure it was my dad's dream for me to be an NFL quarterback. Sometimes I feel a little guilty about it, but hey, it's my life.
My dad too. A bunch of dads have this dream.

But movies, books and music are art forms. I can understand admiring somebody's physical prowess in their chosen sport, but that's not even what most fans seem to care about. And hiking, birdwatching, baking, and collecting are activities that people enjoy participating in. I've yet to meet anybody who enjoys watching somebody else hike or birdwatch.

Trust me, compared to the other forum, the people here are saints. Also this forum has a much stronger sense of community than the other one did. Actually I'd say it has a much stronger sense of community than any forum I've joined.
The only other forum I had this kind of a community sense was a MySpace group called The Metal Fiends. But that died when MySpace went into the crapper.
And yeah compared to other forums I have peaked in on, the majority of the people here are very chill. So much so I can say Quentin Tarantino or *insert famous director here* is overrated and not get into a gigantic flame war.

There is probably a hiking or birdwatching show that somebody watches, but that's beside the point. My point is just that it's a hobby the same way any of those things are. I also don't see why people can't feel the same way by watching football that they do while consuming art. Games are often times dramatic, comedic, and can even be (somewhat) tragic.
Is this a serious question?
Yes that's right, it was a serious question. Here in Scotland we have no idea what apples are.
:p
When your watching professional sports you are watching people who are performing at levels that we cannot fathom. Most of us who played sports throughout our life knew someone who was an exceptional athlete. That person who seemed to be ten levels ahead of where the rest of us were. 99.9% of those people were not good enough to compete on the level we are talking about. If you didn't enjoy sports on any level you will probably never understand but it is definitely not the same as watching people hike.

I don't get the reason for hating him, personally.
I think part of it is because of the star on his helmet. The same way people will hate Kobe because he wears purple and gold, or people hated Jeter because he wore pinstripes.
Tony gets it way worse than those guys though, and I don't really understand it.

Well I'm no expert on apples, but yes, apples are fruit. They're closely related to pears, though I imagine if you don't know what apples are, you won't know what pears are either. They generally have a hard, crisp texture and range in taste from sweet to tart.
Here's a list of apple varieties http://www.orangepippin.com/apples
There are many different kinds of apples, but only a few are typically found in grocery stores here. It's quite common to see red delicious (which I think are grainy and disgusting, despite their name), Granny Smith (crisp and tart, my favorite), honey crisp, gala and golden delicious.
People most commonly just eat them raw, but also add flavor by dipping or coating them with cinnamon, caramel, peanut butter or yogurt. They're also popular as a pie filling. Apple juice is also commonly consumed, either chilled (usually straight but sometimes carbonated) or spiced and heated into cider (with or without alcohol). Apples are also ground up and made into applesauce, which is a popular snack with children, but is also used as a substitute for butter or eggs in baking, to reduce the fat content of whatever is being made.
Football is hard because of the many different types of positions but for me it is Jerry Rice.
Jordan is the easy answer for the other question I think.

I think the best football player ever is Peyton Manning.
Greatest athlete ever: that's tough. I don't have any knowledge of athletes before 1900, but as far as accomplishments go, Jim Thorpe maybe? Michael Jordan has to be up there too.

Without context, their best moments will mean nothing. You would have to understand why the moments are so special. You would have to spend the years of loss with him and then the anxiety of the playoffs during the year when Peyton's Colts win the Super Bowl. I can't make you feel that in a 3 minute youtube clip.

has me compelled, but I am having a hard time seeing an exceptional athlete in action. Like, I can tell when an actor gives a great performance, you know? I can SEE it. I can't see an exceptional athlete playing sports really well. That might be why I'm not interested in them, if what you're saying is true.
Also, I simply have a problem with athletes getting paid as much as they do for what is essentially a game. That's always bothered me. As far as I know, hikers don't get paid millions of dollars to hike.

They get paid a lot of money because they make the people that pay them a lot of money.
I think understanding the game would help you appreciate why they are really good at it. I ooh and aah during games, because I notice those guys doing things I wish I could do.
I also appreciate the team aspect of football. As far as sports go, I consider football the game that requires the most strategy. Then you have to have all 11 guys on the field doing exactly what they are supposed to do. If they don't, then you have to have somebody making an exceptional play. I wish I could display some of this stuff to you in person, I can't really do it like this.
They get paid a lot of money because they make the people that pay them a lot of money.
Yes, but that doesn't make the fact that they get paid a lot of money right. :p
I think understanding the game would help you appreciate why they are really good at it. I ooh and aah during games, because I notice those guys doing things I wish I could do.
I was just thinking that. I guess I could actually learn the rules of a sport and try to appreciate it. But I would always view it as simply a game.
Also, I simply have a problem with athletes getting paid as much as they do for what is essentially a game. That's always bothered me. As far as I know, hikers don't get paid millions of dollars to hike.
This is simple capitalism. Athletes get paid this much because people pay big money to these franchises to see them play. If people stopped coming and companies stoppes advertising, their pay would go down accordingly.
Here is a Rice compilation that is pretty good. You have a hard time seeing his speed and route running ability in a highlight reel though.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=12QsjuV22Nw
Well, you know, you guys are just explaining why they get paid so much. I understand it's simple capitalism - that doesn't make it right.
If it wasn't for the money, I probably would sound anti-sports (I try not to be). Sports/games, for many people, are lots of fun and also something they are passionate about. I like playing board and card games myself. People fighting over it is a minor irritant.

Have you ever thrown a football, Swan? It's easy to throw it 20 yards or so, and it's not that hard to hit a stationary target that's waiting for the ball. Throwing the ball to a moving target while anticipating exactly when he is going to make his cut or break and seeing where the defenders will be while you have at least 7 or 8 guys are moving in front and around you is a little more difficult.
Not to mention having three hundred pound men who run like they are 180 bearing down on you the whole time.

Yep, I do actually.
Though I do feel art is more worthwhile and important than sports/games.

I think that if somebody wants to pay you a bunch of money for anything, I can't really say you don't deserve it. I can say that it's dumb of the person writing the checks, but it's hard to blame the person cashing those checks.
I will say there was one time I was interested in football, when the whole Tim Tebow Broncos stuff was going on. Wasn't it like, they would be losing until the very end and then they would all the sudden leap forward in points? Something like that. Tebow was also kind of a quirk from what I understand, with the Bible verse numbers on his cheeks and the fact that he had a weird way of throwing a football.
Correct me if any of that is wrong.

The Broncos couldn't move the ball all game, because Tim Tebow wasn't a good quarterback. Then for whatever reason, the teams playing against him would play what is known as prevent defense. Which is essentially backing most of the defenders away from the line of scrimmage, giving Tebow space to run the ball. He was not a bad ball runner, so this helped him a lot. The Broncos won a handful of pretty lucky games, and Tebowmania ran wild. He did have a surprisingly nice pass against the Steelers though. Part of that was that Ryan Clark couldn't play in Denver because of some kind of condition though, and Ryan Clark probably would have been the man in coverage there. He was better than whoever was out there.

Mmmmmm... Green.
Also just going back to the discussion of previous pages, can someone explain 'apples' to me? What are they? Perhaps it's something that hasn't made it to Scotland. It's not one of them fruit things is it?
^ Just a little self-racism there. Thought it was best to get it in before honeykid piped up. We all know what he's like. :p
It's not racist. You're the same race I am. :p
It's because they're tribal. It's that element that provokes these things. Well, partly, anyway. I think that's why sport, in general, appeals more to men than women and why the violence that you're talking about is almost exclusively male.
I've liked honeykid from the start.
Yeah, she's liked me from the start. :p Na-na, na-na-na! :D
Yes that's right, it was a serious question. Here in Scotland we have no idea what apples are.

Think of apples as healthy potatoes that you don't batter or fry. I know, right? Weird, but try to get your head around it. :D Also, cold chips aren't salad. :p
Again, it's tribal. However, if you get 'into' the world of these more fringe/weird hobbies, you'll find plenty of aggro between different groups and the way things are done.

I'm sure many of these people would call what they do a sport. Maybe they're right, but most would say it's a game. However, if it was a multi million pound business, I think most would try to call it a sport as a way of giving it gravitas or importance of some kind.

i missed the meat of the sports discussion, so i'll throw my thoughts in
I think the popularity of sports has everything to do with bragging rights, which has only increased with social media... Twitter, Facebook, etc. I'll use College Football as my example bc it is in-season
First off, to understand college football, you need to experience a game in person. If you've never been to a bigtime football game in Tuscaloosa, Alabama (the Crimson Tide), Gainesville, Florida (the Gators), Baton Rouge, Louisiana (LSU Tigers), etc. Then you will never understand via explanation. You come across loud, cocky, arrogant fans who are sure their team will win. If you're sporting your team's t shirt, random people will yell out *****-talk about YOU, your team, and players
I'm a Georgia fan, and our biggest rival is probably the Florida Gators. We play every year, but from 1990 through 2010, Florida won 18 out of 21 games. You simply do not understand how much ***** those people talked during those years. The Gator fanbase / coaches / players built up so much bad karma during all those years that Georgia fans could not wait to see our team shut the cocky Gators up. That's why the entire Georgia team had a party in the end zone after the first touchdown in 2007,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m9qm8JROXWc
it was a priceless moment and day. Thousands of cocky Gators watched as Georgia pummeled their a$$ all day, even though they had Tim Tebow on their team. To understand sports is to understand the animosity that grows between rivalries over time
This is just one example. Sure, overall, it may be juvenile in a way, but so can anything. Even movie watching. I love both, probably enjoy movie-watching more at this point, but i still enjoy football. It allows me to spread my interests out into various places
I actually think sometimes there can be a similar dynamic comparing movies and sports. In the sense that new generations of sports fans come along and often don't appreciate accomplishments of past teams and players. LeBron James has his fanbase who think he is the greatest ever, and scoff and belittle the accomplishments of, say, Michael Jordan. Sometimes it reminds me of teen generations of movie fans who may rip any movie that is more than 20 years old, or in black & white, that kind of thing.
I do think movies can be more easily appreciated over time, bc a movie speaks for itself. Just watch it. Whereas to really appreciate the accomplishments of great sports teams & athletes of the past, you have to understand what was going on at certain points in time. Which you may not get from watching a highlight reel, you will probably have to seek out a documentary, and those may not recapture the full excitement that a great player or great team displayed
How are you feeling about the Gurly situation Nostromo? Are you from around here BTW? I live in Dalton now but used to live in Gainesville. I had a cousin who taught at UGA so I have spent a couple of weekends there, searching for Michael Stipe of course.

With those two at the helm we had the psychological edge over 95% of the teams we played, UGA being the prime example. It comes and goes as far as being good in college. I'll never worry about UF recruiting the athletes it needs, but it shows the importance of a college football coach. The team really reflects his personality. That's why Muschamp has to go, we have lost that cocky we are FLA swagger. I never worried about UGA when we had a chance to go to a big time bowl because I knew we had the swagger to beat UGA. Now UGA has the upper hand. Look at whats happen to Tennessee. Coach after coach and they were a powerhouse forever, still have great support.
Anyways I just wanted to say I hate UGA :). Funny thing about me is my dad uncle and cousin are all FSU fans. The other part of my family is from Knoxville. One cousin graduated from UT and my Uncle got his Doctorate from UT. And I ended up a Gator fan. Go Figure.

Go Figure.
I am ready for hoops season thou!!!!!!
oh yea, your Gators kicked the crap out of Georgia for years. Even after the Bulldogs got that win in 2007, your Gators got revenge by winning the next three contests- 2008 and 2009 by blowout knockout punches
We've got issues of our own at Georgia, just can't seem to get over that hump from perennially decent, to championship caliber football

By the way I prefer this Gator vs UGA highlight ;-)
It was done after that hit.
By the way how the hell didn't yall win it all that year? AJ Green, Knowshon and Stafford? The defensive side has always been your guys Achilles heel. If you guys were more consistent on that side of the ball you would probably have a couple championships. Even when Florida sucks are defense is usually stout that's what helps us. It's just if the offense is good enough and with Tebow it was ha.
College hoops>>>>>College football
This was my war cry 15 years ago. I don't think it is true anymore. I still really like March Madness though.

I like that the discussion was the best athlete in sport and then only two or three sports are mentioned. :D

i agree tho that sports can be sorta stupid sometimes, and how much people care about them
that can be said about many things, but sports is certainly one of the obvious ones
sports talk over :p

MovieGal, comparing Kansas City to Green Bay as football towns is not the same. Sorry.
Like I said, Green Bay IS football.
Yeah we have a tendency to over indulge in everything. Even things that seem more important like current events or science. You become over stimulated and put undue importance on them. These things become our drug of choice.
Green Bay is probably the best football town. There are lots of good ones though and KC makes that list, they are pretty football crazy.

Rauldc... I think anyone says that about their home town team... I aint hatin'.. because I aint karen ().... I just thought I would mention how STUPID my sister can be over it..... she gets up and runs (in place) as the player runs down the field... Yeah we grew up with parents who watched all types of sports.... but my parents never acted like that..... (I prefer olympic type sports such as figure skating and gymnastics... but I dont get overexcited about it)

Nah, bruh. Peep it by yourself, then if anybody decides they want to see it later, you have an excuse to go twice.
No, you're not a fool for seeing a movie by yourself. You're ten times cooler!
I do it all the time. Always have because I enjoy going more than anyone in my life. I don't find it to be a big deal.
