I thought ParaNorman was good, but not great. It's worth watching, but it may not be list-worthy. (At least not for me.)
Unfortunately it was released right around the same time as two other similar movies, and it might have gotten lost in the shuffle for some people because of it. (One of the other similar movies was Frankenweenie, but offhand, I can't remember what the other one was.)

Novels/Novellas of the 1800s
Horror Films
TV BritComs
Comedies of the new millenium
Films of the Year (Like the Sane thread)
NES Games
Rap albums since 2010
Best albums of the 50s
Animated tv series
Best Albums since I was born (Oct. 31, 1991)
Films of the half-decade
Songs of particular bands/artists (I have several in mind here, don't know which I would want to do first. I've been thinking Beach Boys though. Or maybe Joanna Newsom since she has been a polarizing figure in the folk tournament.)
I wanted try something off the beaten path here. Any ideas/suggestions?

Frankenweenie was an older short story film by Tim Burton.... its a classic to all the Burton fans.. the just made the story longer for the movie.. I enjoy old Burton work... not so much his newer stuff.... becoming to mainstream....
Yeah, I don't know what the demo for this was. One of those too adult for children and too childish for adults movies to me so far.

Next thing I knew, I heard a terrible noise from the fireplace. When I looked up, I seen a man in a red suit over 6 feet tall with white hair and a beard. His cheeks were red but there was a burning evil in his eyes. Quickly my eyes moved from that face to the ax he was holding in his hand. My eyes were wide and filled with horror as I heard him say "Merry ****ing Christmas" as the ax blade swung down and entered my skull.

TVBritComs would be easy for us Brits. Novels of the 1800s would be nice but if you made recommendations it'd take ages for people to read all the books. Songs of particular bands/artists would be interesting. I'd be up for listening even if it was Ms Newsom :D

There is a great thread regarding British television that I would use for recommendations for the time being.
I'll put effort into about four different lists, but my priorities are as such: Rap albums since 2010, Comedies of the new millenium, TV BritComs, and then Novels/Novellas of the 1800s. The first two should be good to go in a relatively short time period. At least the rap albums list. The BritComs will come eventually. The novels list could be further off in the distance, I am not well-read enough for that yet.

But while on the subject, one of my favorite tools for self defense as an armed security guard is the 3-D cell LED Maglite.
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/71zEY1pwhXL._SL1500_.jpg
Provides a very valuable tool as a flashlight and since it is an LED the battery life will be insanely long (like 79 hours). But it is also a long aluminum rod that you could use as a bludgeon if need be. Hold it in reverse in your left hand so you can use it as a flashlight, but also that if need be can be used to smack somebody. Use it in the left hand on a collar bone and you take out a person's right side. And since 9/10 people are right handed, you have just disabled or weakened their dominant hand. Giving you the edge.

And I can't stress this enough, know you local laws of use of force. Learn when deadly force is acceptable. But most states it should be fine to use some kind of force if threatened. If deadly force is not being threatened against you, avoid the head and neck as that is considered deadly force. But of they pull a knife, that is a deadly weapon and you can respond by smacking a guy in the head. Of course I am going off Florida law here, be sure to research your local laws. And if need be ask someone who is in the know like a cop.

The Gunslinger45

Does that include home invasion scenarios?
Well you live in Oklahoma, and like Florida you have the Castle Doctrine. In that doctrine is the idea that your home is your castle, and you do not have the requirement to retreat should a home invasion occur. So for home defense if a person breaks in, you can just shoot them to defend yourself. So the best tool there is a firearm if you have one. A pistol with hollow points is the best, but a suitable 12 or 20 gauge shotgun with #4 buckshot (NOT 00 buckshot) is also a great choice for a fixed defense position. Maybe a rifle if you live in a rural area with lots of wide open spaces, but shotgun for urban environments.
But that being said, you want to be smart in defending your home. I HIGHLY advise having a LED on your pistol and your shotgun. If someone breaks into your home you want to make damn sure that person is a legit threat. When you shine that LED in their eyes you will temporarily blind them for a few seconds. You use that time to check their hands and access their demeanor. The guy could be a guy who drank too much and is stumbling home, but mistakes your home for his. If the hands are empty, let him know he is not welcome and that you are armed. Remember, the name of the game is keeping your home safe, not racking up a body count. You want to be damn sure you are not shooting someone you don't have to. In addition, you want to be damn sure of what you are shooting at. The LED will illuminate the subject so you know can properly determine the situation.
But, if he has anything that can be used as a weapon like a crowbar, machete or another firearm, and he is not invited into your home; just shoot him. He is not there to sell you girl scout cookies, he has bad intentions, so neutralize the threat. And ONCE HE STOPS MOVING, YOU STOP SHOOTING!
And, of course, calling 911 should be done at the earliest time. If you can call the cops, do that first. If you can't, defend yourself first.
That being said I am only giving advice from my experience and training, but I am not a professional when it comes to training. A pro's advice will be much better then mine. But odds are he will say a lot of what I have said.

It is going to be different for Swan though. California is not the best place to try and defend yourself if you are in a bad place. So for Swan I HIGHLY recommend learning the local laws there.

I think that is more a San Francisco Haight Ashbury sort of thing. Swan is from Folsom, might be a bit more rough and tumble. :D
But generally they are going to make it much more difficult to keep your butt alive. And it is not a gun friendly place like Florida or Texas so hands will be tied.

Speaking of guns, Guns, what gun do you recommend to mostly make a lot of noise, but would be easy to handle and could actually do damage should I need it to?
I really just want one to shoot in the air to scare off any wildlife that might be a danger to my dogs and future animals.
I get the occasional rattlesnake. I've been able to relocate one and the other just left, but I would like to have a gun in case a situation would ever call for it.
Tim thinks a small shotgun would be best, but I want other opinions.

Got a few options. For the best option with the broadest use, I think a good 20 gauge will work. That way it will work on most small wild life with minimal recoil.
Got one option here in single shot from H&R. Not to mention they are quite affordable.
http://www.hr1871.com/Images/photo_tamer_20g_2.jpg
Mossberg makes great pump actions which could be used for self defense against people (but I prefer the 12 gauge for that). Remington is also an excellent choice but I lean more toward Mossberg.
http://cdn1.cheaperthandirt.com/ctd_images/bgprod/2-MS50136.jpg
H&R also has one in 410 if you want something for snakes only.

Thanks! I'll look into those. I might get something just for snakes, but I feel I need an all purpose gun too.
My back yard has a really good fence and I'm not anticipating having to use a gun, but I really think (and others feel this way) that I need something for protection. It would take the police a bit to get to me should I ever need them.
Rabies is always a fear in Florida too. I don't want a rabid animal attacking my dog without some way to protect it.

But if you want a handgun that could be a good choice, I suggest the Taurus Judge. A revolver that can fire 45 Long Colt (the 45 Peacemaker/ Single Action Army round) as well as 410 shotgun shells.I personally used to own this weapon and it is a very fun gun to shoot. Down side is it is a very niche firearm. This is a great gun for someone who lives in the woods and needs something for snakes and other critters. An exceptional trail gun. But not the best for home defense in an urban environment given it's very limited range (like 7 feet with either round) and 5 shot capacity and not practical for concealed carry. Since I do live in the city, it is not the most practical weapon for me. So I sold it and bought a S&W 357.
http://images.rockwellarms.com/ProductImages/Taurus/Revolvers/4510TKR-3SSMAG.jpg
But I also know CCI makes snake shot rounds in a lot of calibers, including 38 special so if you have a 357 or a 38 you can use that to take out snakes, and load normal 38 or 357 for most everything else. But the shotgun might be better for you. I have just made a few suggestions.

Yes, I agree. I was daydreaming in class and the dude was just like "DO YOU THINK THE LEGAL DRINKING AGE SHOULD BE LOWERED?" he totally caught me off guard and so I just said yeah and he was all like "OKAY, YOU'RE IN."

Kids are gonna drink anyway and anyone who says they've never gotten drunk before turning 21 is probably lying. A lot of kids do it cause they think it's cool so if it's legal, drinking wouldn't give them look any cooler so they'll probably stop caring so much. I don't know, dude.

The drinking age is 18 here and its legality hasn't stopped anyone drinking at age 18 (and before).

Yeah, you probably know more about it than I do. All I know is, I know tons of kids who are convinced that drinking makes them look cooler cause it's 'badass' and they're 'breaking the law'. So I guess one point I'm trying to make is maybe if it wasn't against the law, they'd stop drinking for the sake of looking cool.
Honestly, I don't really care what the legal drinking age is. And I'm probably going to drop out of this stupid debate anyway.

I'm not disagreeing, I agree with the first point, but when it comes to kids drinking because it's illegal, people continue to drink just as much after they hit legal drinking age, if not more.
You might be right overall though, I'm too stupid to know the correct answer. :D
You're not stupid :D And I don't even know if I agree with any of my points.

I don't know. I have a couple of friends that are pretty ferocious in their debating skills and even when I know I'm right ;), I get my point lost sometimes. To be fair though my friend went to college for like 11 years so she better be over educated.
That's where good debating skills come in handy because she can take something ludicrous that she believes in (such as she believes someone who has an affair with a married person is not morally culpable because they didn't make the commitment). I think that's horse manure, but she argues so well that she ends up getting a lot of people to agree with her on that point.

Impressive.
Not really.
Actually I don't think I've ever been truly drunk. I don't much care for the way most alcoholic beverages taste, they're too expensive, and people tend to act really obnoxious and smell really bad when they're drunk so I never saw the appeal of it.
Also I'm genetically incapable of metabolizing alcohol properly.
Yesterday I was in downtown Santa Cruz and went into a bookstore. Browsed Starting Points by Miyazaki. Found an essay he wrote about Fantastic Planet. He didn't care for the movie much. I wanted to cry.
But I didn't.

Oh yeah, Baltimore. I guess it depends where you are, but where I was would give the 5th Ward in New Orleans a run for it's money. There was a bunch of us staying in this house for this thing happening in Washington. This boy from England was there and he was so freaked out. He was hilarious. He told me he was going to kidnap me and take me back to England because I was the only person he had met that wasn't a raving lunatic.
We saw a rat and he freaked out so much. I'm pretty sure they have rats in England, but you would have never known that from his reaction to one.

Hubby and I collect lots of things. I collect everything Looney Tunes related, especially Marvin the Martian, New York Mets items, Star Wars and Star Trek items, cute character stuffed animals, PVC figures of all kinds of characters, and anything cool that I find cheap at garage sales. I've gotten some great deals on statues, including a cool Song of the South statue with Brer Rabbit, Brer Bear, and Brer Fox all on the same statue for only $4. My newest addition is a bunch of the Despicable Me minions.
Hubby collects everything superhero related, including old comic books, statues, cool toys, NASCAR cars, etc.
And I also collect any DVDs that I can find cheap at garage sales. If it's a movie that I haven't seen yet, and the DVD is $1 or less, I just have to buy it. :)

I love big cities too, but I like living in the country. Then when you visit one, it's really spectacular.
I go through periods where I collect things. Right now it's comic books. I've always collected books in general.
I collected bird feeders for awhile. I also like to collect local art. Sometimes the stuff that people want for their work is outrageous, so I don't have all the local artists. A lot of them have just gave me stuff, so that's cool.
I also have a thing for bags. Not just purses, those are included, but also backpacks, totes, anything you can carry stuff in. I'm crazy for them.
I don't know if colored pencils and art supplies count, but I can't stop buying them and I log every item. At this point I have 273 colored pencils. That's counting the stubs, but I can't bring myself to throw them out. Besides they are still usable, I just wouldn't want to color a large area with them.

When I was younger, I collected baseball cards, but I stopped collecting them when the prices jumped from about 50 cents a pack to about $3 a pack. That just took all the fun out of it for me.
And I have a ton of bobbleheads all over the house.
I don't have the Marvel chess set yet, but I have the Star Trek chess set, the Looney Tunes chess set, and the Hanna Barbera chess set. I had the Star Trek 3-D chess set, but my mom stole it from me, (with my permission),
Oh, and golf balls of random places that I have been to.

Oh yeah, that reminds me. I also have a bunch of cool poker chips from my visits to Atlantic City. They all have cool pictures on them instead of just the hotel name. My favorite one has a picture of Johnny Mathis on it.
And I also have a bunch of souvenir silver coins from the slots machines at AC. Each coin is worth $10, and they can be traded in to the casino at any time for "real" money. Whenever I go to AC, I only play the slot machines that give out these coins, and then I keep them as souvenirs instead of trading them back in.
I have been trying to come up with something cool to collect for a couple years, but nothing yet has struck my fancy. I loved baseball cards as a teenager but sold my collection when they over saturated the market and I knew my addiction would get the best of me. I may just stick to blu-rays.

I'm so excited about fall. Florida has some awesome flea markets but I don't like to go in the summer because it's too hot for the dogs and Bunny loves flea markets so much that I feel guilty going without him.
There is always some great finds there. I also love finding great deals. Last time I was there I got Patchoulis oil, a ring, a charm for Gidget's collar, four comic books and a bag all for under $20. The bag was this really cool tote bag with a frog on it so I was completely happy.
I love a good deal. I'll spend top dollar when it's something that I feel it's worth it like shoes, food or certain art supplies. I'm cheap as hell when it comes to things that you can get dirt cheap that are just as good as the expensive things.
I get so excited about my "finds" I went to Big Lots and they had these plastic folders that snap shut so your papers are completely enclosed and protected. Perfect for artwork. 25 cents a piece. Then I use a children's detangler on my hair instead of conditioner and that was 2 for a dollar. Two of those will last me most of the year.
Sometimes I can find stuff like that at the flea market. This woman sells this soap that she makes herself and it smells wonderful. It's 2 dollars a bar but 1 if you buy 10. 10 bars will last me a year or more.
I save a ton of money that way.

I've seen that done. I would love to learn how to do that.

I love flea markets, but a lot of the ones around here have become just a bunch of boring, cheaply made retail stuff. That's why I prefer garage sales. You never know what you'll find at a garage sale. On a good weekend, we can hit as many as 100 garage sales in two days.
And I know what you mean about your "finds". Some of my favorite "finds" are cheap items, like my little PVC figures for my desk. Especially when I find a character that I didn't think was even made, like my little figure of Professor Gangreen from the Killer Tomatoes movies.

I just bought my chess sets with the board and pieces all at the same time. I think they're from The Franklin Mint. They offered an option of two pieces a month until I had all the pieces, and then I could buy the board, but my mother-in-law got screwed on a Hummel set that they stopped making after a few months, so I opted to buy the complete sets all at once.

Buying one at a time is just fun to me. I don't know why. Fun to see collections build, rather than just buy it and and have it right away.

I agree. I love building the collection, but I know that with my luck they would stop selling the pieces before I finished the set.

The Waldo Flea Market looks a lot like the car show / swap meets around here. They've become the closest thing we have to a good flea market, but there are only a few big ones left.

We have a couple more but that's the biggest best one. It takes a good deal of time if you want to get to everything so I always make a day of it. You always want to go on a Sunday and stay until closing.
I shop all the places, see what I want then go back at closing. People will make the better deals then because they want to unload their stuff.
Unless it's already such a good deal that I would feel bad haggling them any lower, but a lot of them expect that and set their prices higher. I love haggling.

Yeah, that sounds a lot like the swap meets. You have to get there around 7AM or you can't find a parking spot, and we're usually there until 6 or 7 PM when the vendors start closing. We always haggle to try a get a better deal, and we make a last sweep through some of the better aisles just before we leave to try an get last minute bargains on stuff that the vendors wouldn't drop their prices on earlier in the day.
The best ones left are in Englishtown, NJ and Carlisle, PA, but they're a bit of a drive for us so we usually make a weekend out of it. The one in Hershey, PA is pretty good too, and we get to buy some chocolate while we're there, too. :)

Over 2 million books is what they advertise. They're all secondhand, so cheap! I usually spend 6 to 7 hours there before the mental exhaustion kicks in. :)

Wow, that's a lot of books!
We have some used book sales here, but they're usually run by the local libraries, so they're not that big, but you can get some really good deals if you're willing to spend some time going through several large rooms filled with old books.

Damn, that's a lot of books. I collect books as well but mostly get them off the internet since they're usually cheaper. That looks like loads of fun though!!!!

1. I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK (2006; Chan-wook Park)
2. The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra (2001; Larry Blamire)
3. Pootie Tang (2001; Louis C.K.)
4. Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001; Kevin Smith)
5. 24 Hour Party People (2002; Michael Winterbottom)
6. Bubba Ho-Tep (2002; Don Coscarelli)
7. The Saddest Music in the World (2003; Guy Maddin)
8. The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004; Wes Anderson)
9. The Wayward Cloud (2005; Ming-liang Tsai)
10. Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (2006; Scott Glosserman)
These are all listed as comedies on IMDb. Choose one of them for me to watch (some of them could be rewatches.) And if one of them isn't really a comedy let me know, so I can strike it from my list. The more fun the movie, the better. I need a little bit of escapism for now.
Life Aquatic, no brainer.

Yep it's a rewatch, but it's been a long time. I saw it when I was still in high school. I didn't appreciate it then, but that's no indicator of how I will feel now.
