What did you think of Under the Skin?

seanc

I was not expecting much the way everyone talked about it, didn't seem like my kind of thing. I thought it was really interesting though. Visually stunning and I enjoyed people watching with Scarlett. Definitely not as ponderous as people are making it out to be though. 3.5

Almost everyone I have heard praising it has talked about what a unique look it is into male behavior. I think that is there but it's not really giving us much beyond guys like hot chicks. Plus she is the predator for 2/3 of the movie. Just not a lot to dwell on. Sometimes I feel like when a movie isn't "talky" critics think it has more to say than it actually does.

Saying all that though, this movie may be a visual masterpiece. Stunning on Blu-ray.

The timing is also perfect as I teach a class 8:00 pm Tuesday nights and the class lets out at 700 and is really close to the building where I train. In my secret fantasies I want to be a published writer someday. We all have our dreams, but it's enough now for me to write my silly stories.

I took a creative writing class in high school. You do a lot of brainstorming and critiquing each other's work. We would have different exercises that we would do that were a lot of fun. You can't teach it like you would science or math, but you can teach someone how to open up to the creative process. . A lot of being creative is just letting go of those mental blocks we have and learn to see things differently. There are a lot of different things they do in those classes (if they're worth anything) that get the creative juices flowing and get people to go deeper within themselves to find things to write about. I remember we would also do exercises that make the right side of the brain take over.

I imagine there will be a fair share of critiquing style and structure too. I hope it's a really good class.

Walking a 'troubled' dog in the street without a lead , in fact walking any dog in the street without a lead ...what an idiot. I don't think you should walk any dog on city streets without a lead.
In my road there's this woman who walks her two terriers always without a lead and they'll always yards in front of her. I'm fed up of coming out of my house with my dog (who's pretty unsociable towards strange dogs) to have this woman's dogs suddenly appear from nowhere cos I can't see them in front of the wall. And she's the only sympathising with me for having a dog that barks at hers

Godoggo

I never walk my dogs without a lead (unless it's in the woods near my house where I never have encountered another human being and where I have permission to do so. ) I also make everyone who comes through my training classes and take private lessons from me sign a contract saying that they will never walk their dog without a lead. I don't care how well you think your dogs are trained, there is always something that could make them break and run. It's impossible to train against every possible scenario that could happen and life is unpredictable.

Even way before this happened, Millan was not respected among his peers. I can't believe he was this dumb though. First, he walks a dog known to have aggression towards people in a public area then when the dog bites someone (imagine that) he blames the person for spooking the dog.

Poor dog. I don't know what will happen to it, but Millan just set this dogs rehabilitation back immensely.

He should know better than to have dogs sent to him to have trained anyway. It doesn't work like that. Anyone who has ever had a dog with issues knows that you have to put in the work, not your trainer. You get the knowledge from your trainer and you do the work. A lot of it.

If anything good comes of this, I hope it's that people realize that just because your famous and charming it doesn't mean that your good at what you do.

I go absolutely ballistic with people who walk dogs off lead. We are lucky to have fenced off leash areas in my town and I strongly advise those people to use these if they find it necessary to have their dog off lead.
But to have a trainer that walks any dog off lead in an uncontrolled environment is unbelievable. Milan is an idiot.
Sorry, I'll climb down off my soapbox now. It's just that I'm sick of seeing people doing stupid things and the dogs are the ones that usually have to pay with their lives. :(

The only place I let mine off the lead is in fields by me where I can see for 360 degrees around me. He only ever goes a few yards away from me but some people have dogs that run towards you from miles away, so I can see them coming and put him back on the lead.

People that say 'my dog would never do this or that' are kidding themselves.

Agreed about the training issues and owners. It's hard work having a dog, some people want them to be perfectly trained but don't realise that it's you that needs the patience and time, not the dog - they have loads of that to spare!

The whole reason I got into dog training (besides that I love them) is that I had this dog that was horrible around other dogs. With people she was absolutely lovely, but dogs were a different story. She would see a dog and growl and snarl and practically foam at the mouth. She would also spin around on her harness trying to get to them. It was so embarrassing.

Luckily, I found this great e-mail list that had all these fantastic trainers on it (as well as Bob Bailey if anyone knows who he is) and there was a trainer in my area on the list. The amount of work I had to put into that dog was incredible, but well worth the effort. The first class I took her to we had to stay behind this wooden partition the entire class so that she couldn't see the dogs, but knew they were there. I felt like an exile, but it worked.

Eventually, she got to the point where I could have her around other dogs and even bring other dogs into my home. I had to be very careful about it and all the dogs had rules that they had to follow so as to not trigger her. For example, all the dogs would have to have their own places to eat and sleep. Her reaction to other dogs came from feeling threatened by them so I had to constantly maintain structure so that she didn't feel like the others were out to get what was hers.

You don't learn all that by sending them away to get trained.

I was bit on the leg by my grandparents' new dog recently when I went to visit them. My grandma had one of those enormous, like, birthday cards on her lap, and since she's old and elderly I went over to her and took the giant card so I could move it to a table for her.

Damn dog growled and bit me on the leg, I guess trying to protect her. I had never seen the dog before that day. I am not the only person it's bit, too. It drew blood. I'm a noob here and this seemed like the appropriate thread to make my lurking presence known.
A bit about myself (not that you asked):

Top Gun is the greatest film ever created by human hands and there is no argument to the contrary (if there is, I will not hear it)

I have two cats and a poodle (they enjoy Top Gun as well)

Anthony Edwards was, in my opinion, a poor choice for the role of Goose. Kenny Loggins obviously should have been cast in this role, seeing as he wrote the greatest song ever composed (Highway to the Danger Zone) for the greatest film ever crafted, the role should have been his, not to mention he is far more handsome than Edwards and possesses superior acting chops (see music video of aforementioned song to better understand what I'm saying).

I work at a tattoo shop in Reno, NV but it's been pretty lame lately because no one here likes Top Gun and I've been banned from watching it at the shop anymore. I am allowed, however, to play the soundtrack at the shop, which is a fair compromise I feel. It gets me through the day, basically.

That pretty much sums me up as a person, I look forward to getting to know all you lovely people and in the enduring words of David Allen Grier: "It's good to be here."

Top Gun is the greatest film ever created by human hands and there is no argument to the contrary (if there is, I will not hear it)

Kenny Loggins... wrote the greatest song ever composed (Highway to the Danger Zone)

he is far more handsome than Edwards and possesses superior acting chops (see music video of aforementioned song to better understand what I'm saying).

:laugh::laugh::laugh:

That pretty much sums me up as a person, I look forward to getting to know all you lovely people and in the enduring words of David Allen Grier: "It's good to be here."

The only art store in town closed down, so now I have to get my supplies online. Not a huge deal, but I really liked having a store to run to if I needed something. Plus, I just liked picking up the stuff and looking at it. I'm weird like that.

Now I'll have to be very careful about ordering everything I need at one time. Sometimes that's hard to do, because you might have an idea and need something you hadn't thought of. We do have Michael's and JoAnne's arts and crafts stores, but they are heavy on the crafts and don't carry a lot of what I need.

Oh well, I suppose I'll get used to it after awhile.

Horses for courses, I suppose. Also, it depends on what you're buying. I wouldn't want to buy shoes online, for example, because I'd rather try them on first. However, I'm sure it's a lot easier to do so and, for some/many people, it's worth the hassle of having to send them back if you don't like them for whatever reason. People have been doing the same with catelogues for decades.

Of course, for the companies it's great as it means they save money on rents/wages/electric/etc for shops if they only have ot worry about warehouse space.

Godoggo
07-28-14, 12:22 AM
I actually like buying clothes online because I hate clothes shopping. I know what brand of jeans fit me well and what size so those I don't need to try on. In the summer I wear a lot of sundresses and those should be loose and flowey anyway, so no need to try them on.

I don't buy shoes online. Those do need to fit and I'm not the type to bother with sending them back if they didn't. I would just give them to someone.

Stuff I care about though I like to see and be surrounded by it.

Miss Vicky
07-28-14, 12:28 AM

We have several people that come into our shop on a weekly basis trying to sell us art supplies that they stole for cheap. There is a little independently owned art store in town and a few times, these people have brought in items ticketed with price tags from this store and I see it as my duty to shame them for stealing from a local business. It's really sad to think someone could be so nonchalant about something like that. It's hard enough for local business to compete with the internet and big box stores as it is, without the additional financial burden of junkies stealing their expensive items to resell for pennies on the dollar.

Wow, I was being pretty self-centered wasn't I? It is a lot worse for the shop owner for sure. As many artists as there are around here, it's a shame they couldn't have stayed open. We have a local chapter of the colored pencil society for crying out loud, and no place to buy them. They sold office supplies too and did copies as well. They always featured a local artist in the back room and had a place for artist to hang flyers and such if they had a show. You can't get that online. :(

I suspect people stole from them quite a bit. When I first started going there they would watch me like a hawk until they got to know me. I saw them do it to other people as well. Such a shame.

christine

You're right Go. There's lots of things lost when a specialist shop closes. You most often have an owner with a lot of expertise who can offer advice, there's the ability to handle to goods and meeting like minded people like you say. We had a small local stationery shop that closed down now there's nowhere to pop in and get a photocopy, a drawing pencil, heavyweight staples , decent coloured paper, stuff that supermarkets don't sell . :(

Today was a weird day. Many ups and downs. Haven't been taking meds. Been getting barely any sleep. Feel like an insomniac.

Why aren't you taking your meds? You know that's a really bad thing to do. Of course you're going to feel like that if you just suddenly stop taking them.

Sorry for the lecture, but I worry. I know from experience that's a big no-no.

It's a mystery exactly what's going on, but a few months ago I adjusted my medication and started taking a new one, and something made my eyes really dry and blink a lot. It's still going on. I thought it was one meds so I stopped that, but now my psychiatrist tells me it could be any of them. And I'm sick of it, so I'm working on figuring out the culprit. Then, in the process of not taking my meds, I find I prefer life so much more without the side effects. I don't want to go back on them, but I got a lecture by my clinician about how I could go batsh*t crazy again without my meds. Don't want that to happen.

I remember when I worked at the grocery store having to work so many hours during Thanksgiving and Christmas Break. I didn't go home that year, so I volunteered to work as much as they needed me to and boy they gave it to me. At the end of it you do feel like you've gone through something really harrowing. Then right after that it was back to work and school both, so that sucked.

Meds have some bad side-effects sometimes, but to get off of them is a process and you can't just quit without a doctor's supervision. You know all this though.

I was able to get off mine through behavior modification but not everyone can. Just remember whatever you do let your doc know what you're doing because that is not to be played around with.

If you're doc isn't very sympathetic to your side effects is it possible to shop around for another?

I love my psychiatrist. His one flaw was not taking this too seriously, but he was GREAT. He's moving back to Italy though, and I'm moving to Santa Cruz, so my psychiatrist he is no more. :(

I'm probably going to try some different meds though. I would love to live life not taking anti psychotics, but I don't think that's smart. My clinician seemed ridiculously worried when I told her I wasn't taking them. I guess she's seen kids do the same thing and say they feel fine too and then have a really bad episode again.

I was paranoid of my dad. I thought (it's really hard to explain... I'm doing my best) he was stealing people's essences by spiking out their "essence-powder" and storing their essence in little bubbles around his legs with the intent of taking over the world. I got paranoid of people because I thought they were secretly my dad. It makes me sad now because since then my relationship with my father has grown and I love the dude.

Also, I felt like I was seeing the world the way a frog or insect might at times. I saw symbols that represented like the reproductive process and stuff like that (nothing you'd recognize, they weren't like penises or vaginas, just weird symbols... think like, an alien letter. I can't remember any exactly, but one might have been like a D with lines coming out of it as "connectors" to other symbols.

Swan
07-31-14, 11:34 PM
While I was recovering I thought I could read people's mind and they could read my mind maybe. Like, I would pass by people and sentences would come into my head like they were theirs. I was really paranoid about my dad here too because I thought he was listening to everything I was thinking and I felt like I had to control what I was thinking.

Swan

There are some good ones. Not nearly enough though. I'd have to watch it again now to be able to tell you how accurate it is to reality, but I remember when I was starting to get treatment and stuff, I watched A Beautiful Mind and could relate to what he was going through a lot. But, there were differences too. The character in A Beautiful Mind has paranoid schizophrenia, while I have undifferentiated schizophrenia.

I like Bergman's Through a Glass Darkly, which has a hot schizophrenic babe.

Through a Glass Darkly is excellent. What is really realistic is the way the family reacts to her mental illness.

Different mental illness but Melancholia is dead on in it's portrayal of depression. So much so that it caused me some embarrassment to watch it.

I've heard a lot of people say that about Melancholia. I would love for there to be a movie like that about schizophrenia. I think there is a lot of stigma against mental illness and film is a good medium to show what we go through.
